Favorite tracks: Far, Far Away, Hotel Arizona
Wilco is one of those bands I know about, I like, I just don't listen to them often enough... But I do like them
Misunderstood is a beautiful understated intro to an album. In particular i love the sections of feedback and drums. The song builds to a great crescendo of noise towards the end before it just expires in your ears either a final death rattle. This makes the jangly ‘Far, far away’ an interesting change of pace and one that works well. The increase in pace continues with ‘monday’ which properly rocks out and appears to feature a mouth harp (cant remember the proper name). The more acoustic led ‘sunken’ treasure a delightfully dreamy break before the banjo plucking highlights of ‘someday soon’ and ‘outta mind’, although the start of the latter reminded me of Sesame street.
I had a brief period of my late teens/early 20s when I listened to a lot of Wilco, but only specific albums, and mostly the first two Billy Bragg/Woodie Guthrie Mermaid Avenue records. This was not one of the albums (it's weird to remember a time where, if you discovered an artist you really liked, checking out their back catalogue generally meant spending a whole lot of money on something you might hate or infecting your computer with multiple viruses). I loved Monday - the brass, the vocals, the upbeatness (I don't care that's not a word), the handclaps, the fact it all sort of falls apart at the end. It's my type of song. Red-eyed and Blue is another high point for me (whistle solo!) and I Got You (At The End of The Century). I'll basically always prefer a tight 40-50 minute album rather than this 1 hour 15 minutes, but reading that the band recorded too many tracks and, knowing it would mean an expensive double album, negotiated it being priced as a single record with their label, losing their share of the album royalties in the deal, makes me love it a little bit. Still, I think this would be much better at 50 minutes as it's a little uneven. This would be a 3.5, but I like it too much to be a 3, so 4/5
What a debut album from this Alt country wizards. A little long but for the most part this album slaps
Great one
Oh great, I thought, when this album popped up. Wilco Johnson. I don’t recognise this solo album but today looks like being a good day. Imagine my disappointment when I realise that it wasn’t “the” Wilco, but some other bunch of Americans I’d never heard of. But hey! It’s not at all bad. Possibly not quite as good as an unknown album by “the” Wilco would be. But today wasn't too bad after all (just a bit long).
Depressing but musically astute album. I found it enjoyable. The opening was incredible. 3.5/5
didn't listen alllllll the way through...
Listened to the whole thing, but feel like my rating is more for disc 1. Disc 2 kinda dragged & wasn't as good. Anyways, pleasantly surprised by the 1st half.
Better than Coldplay
Late 90s indie rock. Strummy folk songs, then suddenly heavy guitars. Enjoyable. Long. Country tracks.
This isn’t their masterpiece, but all the elements are there. The fusion of rock and country, the beautiful melodies, and the thoughtful lyrics. It’s a look at a band on the path to greatness
Oh man this was an awesome album! I had a great time listening to it and I love Wilco! No song was really bad or boring, but it was good to hear the difference between the albums I have heard and the older ones!
Frühe Großtat, bevor sie durch die Decke gingen. Allein schon der Anfang mit "misunderstood" und "far, far away" ist großartig. Die Rocker senken teilweise das Niveau, dennoch tolles Album.4/4
This was a really pleasant album. Initially, it reminded me of Superman by Lazlo Bane because of the pop-rock mixed with the banjo playing. As it continued, it reminded me more of The Thrills, which is definitely a high praise as I love that band. Although, of course, Wilco were around long before The Thrills. This gets rockier as times, but generally stays in that cosy pop-rock area. I wouldn’t say it goes as far as country music, but there is a lot of banjo here. This is a good one.
I like it, although I don't know why it's here
Fucking love Wilco. Think their slow instrumental folky sad stuff is sooo good but maybe they should stick to that
So many different genre influences in this album. It’s one of those albums that I think needs a few listen throughs, especially with the length of the album. I had surprisingly never heard of them but am definitely interested now!
This was an interesting one. Never heard Wilco before. Was put off by the first song of the album, but the rest is full of moments of brilliance that make me really want to come back and listen to this a second time. No big hits jumped out at me, but this is the first double album from the list that hasn't made me wish it were at least 20 minutes shorter. So it gets a 4.
Uncle Tupelo begat Son Volt and Wilco. Son Volt had a great debut record and Wilco's was good but kind of lightweight. This one caught people by surprise and belongs in the hall of very good
3.5 rounded up fun!! long tho ….. shoutout to psych for putting this one on my radar. shawn spencer u will always be famous highlights: misunderstood, outtasite (outta mind), red-eyed and blue, sunken treasure, dreamer in my dreams (sep 4 2024)
No strong feelings but enjoyed it.
The first half of this was a no-skips masterpiece, but it turns out that they just shifted a bunch of the skips toward the end. I think with some editing this could be a 5-star album. As is, it's still amazing. Hope to return to it often.
I’ve listened to Wilco before but never this album. And what a great listen it is. I can’t reason with the one star reviews but of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion. The record is a double but doesn’t feel like it to me, a good mix of songs that doesn’t feel boring over the hour mark.
Utter turd
A beautiful album from an all round beautiful band. Like all Wilco, it's slightly too lo fi and slight to be one of the true greats - it just drifts a touch too much - but its still really lovely to listen to, and a good reminder of their sheer longevity.
A deft blend of country folk rock. Lyrically, melodically, and sonically there’s always some interesting choice made that keeps each track from being an easily categorized genre. Alt rock drumming choices in a bouncy country jangle (Dreamer in my Dreams) or some unique steel guitar usage that doesn’t quite feel country for example. I’ll be revisiting it. My standouts: Red-Eyed and Blue Sunken Treasure Dreamer in my Dreams
Who knew these guys were around (and really good) in 1996?
I didn't know this; and was pleasantly surprised for the most part. I think it would've made an amazing single album, but that is something I feel about most double LPs. A comfortable 4 star listen..
Wilco shows their country roots and almost makes me like it. Mercifully little steel guitar.
This is my favorite Wilco album and only one of a few of theirs I like, because I don't like when they go too polished and too poppy - but this album is a little more subdued and raw, closer to Tweedy's alt-country roots. I also think some of the more uptempo songs have a bit more of a 70's rock sound, which I like. I think it should have been 1 disc, distilled, and it may have been a 4.5 for me. However, at its length, I think it has some duller moments and is a good 4.
I always kinda groan when I come upon a new double album, because if it doesn't connect with me then it's a real slog to get through. This, though? A real treat. Plenty of nuggets of goodness on here. Love the energy of this thing and very glad it was being there, in my ears.
Great for a deep and long moment of thought
Finally a double album which doesn't feel filled with slop songs! I quite like the mix of acoustic stuff, country and blues rock, as they are mixed quite equally, and work very well together. I like the creative and soulful acoustic songs on here, the lyrics and stuff are generally very creative. I also like the mix of loads of different types of instruments, keyboards and banjos and stuff, the later which I probably wouldn't like too much if if wasn't quite subtly done, which it is here. Some of the blues stuff feels a bit outdated and stale, but that's no too many of the songs. Favourite songs: Misunderstoon, far, far away, outtasite (outta mind), red-eyed and blue, I got you (at the end of the century), what's the world got in store, Hotel Arizona, Sunken treasure, someday soon, Outta mind (outta sight), someone else's song, The lonely 1. Overall around 8/10
Interesting album. Very enjoyable and didn't feel too long, despite what the general opinion is. I liked the alt elements way more than country elements, but as I said - it was an interesting experience.
high 4, almost 5 but some of the songs are too predictable and boring and not my style but very good
Cool record!
Great album. Masters of subtlety.
Great
Sure it's pretty lengthy, but when the music is great that's not an issue.
Introspectivo. Colgado. Ideal para acompañar una mañana. See you tomorrow
Weirdly enough, I’ve heard every Wilco album at least once but for whatever reason this one never got in my ears. After a couple runs thru it, I’d slot it right up there with their best, alongside Summerteeth, YHFT, Sky Blue Sky and A Ghost is Born. Tweedy’s songwriting abilities are on full display on this beefy release and he flexes hard off the hope on Misunderstood, which is such a jam. Forget the Flowers immediately becomes an alt-country classic for me. Yea; it could possibly be trimmed a bit but there’s not a bad tune on here. Great stuff. 4 stars
What a great album. One of the few from Wilco’s collection that I don’t own a physical copy of, though I did have a digital copy on my old IPod courtesy of the Indianapolis Public Library. I tend to lean more towards their indie/experimental stuff (Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, The Whole Love…not you, A Ghost Is Born😒) than their alt country tunes, personally, but I still really enjoyed this. Doesn’t linger for a double. Every song belongs. All killer. No filler. 4.5 ⭐️
Fantastic album, just slightly bloated. 4.5 stars because I didn't totally want to hit play again right after it wrapped.
Definitely sounds like a stop on the highway somewhere between Anodyne and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. This might even be the quintessential Wilco album.
This album is just honestly way too long. With that being said, it inspired most of my favorite musicians (Eric Church, Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Isbell, and many others in the country and Americana scene).
An album as a portrait of a new band coming into its own despite the ashes of another. Tweedy struggles with the breakup with his past and forging a new path ahead. It could have been a single album that cut ties with all things Uncle Tupelo. But he fought to keep it a double album that was a full picture of the musician he was. You can hear it all: country twang, punk roots, and the drone and discontent of everything Wilco would become. After A.M., this one really is a big bang for Jeff and the boys. Great snapshot of time and place.
Good
This is a really solid album. I don't think it's quite 5/5, but it's really close. This may sound like a weird pull, but this particular Wilco album reminds me a lot of early Adam Green. Worth a listen.
(32 known/67 new)
Good album, some great ballads along with some alt country and a little experimentation mixed in. Showcases the direction Wilco would start to take after this record.
I liked this but I wish it was a bit shorter. Some songs didn't fit the vibe in my opinion.
Wilco walked so Conner Oberst could run. This was really good and thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. Since I came to this style of music far after Wilco was "a thing" I do sort of feel the genre had progressed by the time I reached it, but I still could hear the obvious influence it provided to those artists I enjoyed.
I don't think I could in good conscience give this album a 5, but I also don't know if I can go lower than a 4. Wonderfully realized alt-country stuff that drifts toward where Wilco went in the future. I think it's gonna depend on my mood by the time the album ends, which might not be great since it's two discs and man that's long. Certainly warrants additional listening.
Pretty good, I like it a fair bit
That's a good example of an album that is clearly not in my style, but i liked it nonetheless. A bit of country infulenced soft rock, very long record, but I had a good time listening to it. Very good album to have on headphones while at work. Nica and pleasant surprise.
I've never been as big of a Wilco fan as some of my colleagues, but I do like them a good bit. So far *Kicking Television* has been my favorite album of theirs I've heard at a (9.5) 4½★ album loved that one. I gave *Mermaid Avenue* a 3½★s on a 1998 music dive, and let's just say *Cruel Country* was more cruel than country to my ears. This one is fairs much better than the other two studio albums. Historically when ever I heard them on Lightning 100, I'd make note to check them out further, but never got so excited about them to just dive in. This and the live album actually kinda does make me want to do a full dive. 8.5/10 ★★★★
It could have been trimmed down a bit, but really solid alt-country. 4.5 stars
4.5
Nice.
Hey look buddy, I'm an engineer. That means I solve problems. Not problems like "What is beauty?" Because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy. I solve practical problems. For instance, how am I going to stop some mean Mother Hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous be-hind? The answer, use a gun, and if that don't work... use more gun. Take for instance this heavy caliber tripod mounted lil' old number designed by me, built by me, and you best hope... not pointed at you.
Awesome double album. First half made me cry and the second half brought me right back. This band is Bob Dylan as a band and this is their Highway 61. This is just great. Definitely recommended. Dreamer In My Dreams is the best song.
First listen to Wilco. Very enjoyable listen.
нормалек, типа кантри. представляется американский бар с этими чуваками на сцене.
Very nice country-adjacent indie. Nice variety of sounds and tempos. Maybe a bit long.
The better version of country and blues. I didn't feel like fast forwarding and skipping this, which is new for me.
Having listened to Wilco’s acclaimed album *Yankee Hotel Foxtrot* and being a fan of it, I was happy to have this album come up today. And after giving this a listen, I’m glad to say that I like this album as well. Being a double album, this album has some nice variety to it that I didn’t expect. There are energetic tracks, then mellow and soft tracks, and more experimental-sounding tracks. The intro track, *Misunderstood*, was an amazing way to start this off. I like its vocal effects and combination of soft and energetic bits. However, it also brings aspects I really appreciate about this album *and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot*, which is the lyricism and songwriting. They’re both really immersive, atmospheric, and set the mood of the songs so well. The song also showcases Jeff Tweedy’s vocal abilities, which are great and unique. Another thing I didn’t expect was *Someone Else’s Song.* Surprisingly, the song played on guitar by Engineer in Meet the Engineer is based on this song, and I knew it as soon as I heard it, haha. I love its soft guitar playing and vocals. As I said earlier, this is a double album, and that can be for better or for worse. This album has great tracks to be found, however, it does drag on a little bit for being over an hour. I felt like some of it could have been shaved off. However, that doesn’t detract from this album being pretty good. I still recommend giving this a listen, especially if you want some nice indie music or liked *Yankee Hotel Foxtrot*.
Really lame cover art hiding a massive trove a good Wilco songs. Less experimental and more straight up indie rock/alt country jams. Pretty dang good
Favorite Track: Far Far Away
An excellent album, notable for its sheer quantity of solid material. It is not, however, the very best Wilco album. That, of course, is "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." I'm sure we will see that one at some point on this list.
Love this album and Wilco
Wilco is like a cozy blanket that wraps you up to comfort you from the profound sadness that they themselves caused.
Enjoy the contemplative nature of Wilco.
Great album. Every song is good.
I like Wilco a lot, and this album is great even though it is long. You can pick up on some of their early experimentation with noise rock that they perfected on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. While I like this album, it’s not as essential as other albums by Wilco, and isn’t one of my go to Wilco albums
Yep, stone-cold classic this one. Exactly the kind of band I wanged on about incessantly during the Britpop era because all the UK bands were "too popular". What an insufferable arsehole I was (and, most likely, still am) Doesn't take anything away from this delicious slice of indie-rock though. From the opening bars of "Misunderstood" the memories came flooding back. I don't go back to this album as often as some on the list, so it's a 4 from me.
Not one I'd heard before. But pretty great.
Oh I'm there for it. This is not the best Wilco by a long shot, but it is essential Wilco, and some of the most important sound to move the needle toward the 21st century indie progression. Sometimes what you really want is straight down the middle Wilco, and Being There delivers on that completely.
Virkelig fedt!
I came to Wilco later and still enjoy Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot more, but these songs are classic alt-country and I have played many of them live over the years. They have a sort of space within the music that a lot of other similar bands don't have. You can hear the beginnings of the experimental Wilco in some of these songs.
Wilco was better than I expected. I always thought they were a boring folk/country band, but they were actually wildly ahhead of their time. On Being There, Wilco blend rock, country, folk and other contemporary styles into a unique project. There are some misses here, but there are still plenty of great songs. Best Songs: Forget the Flowers, Red-Eyed and Blue, Dreamer in My Dreams Worst Songs: Why Would You Wanna Live
Woah! I actually really like this. First great discovery from the 1001 album list for me. It's not a perfect album but it fits my music tastes really well Best Song: Sunken Treasure Rating: 7.5/10 4 Stars
A light four I enjoyed it more than my last Wilco album. I was originally grumpy at it being over an hour and a double album but I put it on while I was cleaning and ended up genuinely enjoying most of it. Like most double albums, the second half of the second album starts to feel not wholly necessary but, again, most of it was really fun.
Over an hour of Wilco is far from the worst musical hour you can spend. Tweedy’s consistently homely and often funny songwriting is always paired with the most upbeat of country-infused rock stems, and this musical hour is all the better for it. Disc 1 (tracks 1 through 10) is more twee - upbeat and repeatable - one of those albums that you can’t really say is amazing on first listen, but can certainly see that you’d learn to love it with (warranted) repeat listens. Disc 2 (save for the whimsical crashing outro of Dreamer in My Dreams) is more outstretched and I suppose ‘album-like’, rather than being more enjoyable on relisten this disc would be more... interesting? I don’t know. It’s a Wilco album. It’s fun, and it’s worthwhile. I have no complaints.
A double album that didn't over stay it's welcome over the length of play. Hadn't heard it before and I found it quite good.
I hadn’t heard any songs from this album even though there are quite a few Wilco songs I’m a fan of. Very nice album. Consistent and good, not anything super exciting, but a pleasant experience.
Wasn't sure where this album was going with the first track, Misunderstood. I was thinking it wasn't going in the right direction as I rated that song a 1/5. After that, it got better, shorter songs, more classic rock feel to them. Sounds a bit like Beck, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, My Morning Jacket... just a good mashup of styles. I dig it. 4/5
I would say I enjoyed it but it’s nothing special. 3.5/5
This is the 3rd Wilco album I've gotten, they have been progressively been getting better, this one's good.
i'm decently well-versed in wilco's discography but i had never encountered this one before. i really liked how 'country' this album is. i know that jeff tweedy was originally in a country band before wilco, so it feels pretty natural and i enjoy the involvement of banjo and other more country instruments here. the album has the same jeff tweedy attitude that you get on most other wilco albums. my only gripe with this album is that the crop of songs is a bit hit or miss and i think honestly this album would have been better if it had been distilled to a single disc.
A good cohesive album. No stand out tracks
man, these dudes have been doing this for awhile now, huh? solid album. rich tapestry of american music with some experimental touches. overly long maybe? maybe. i thought it was a solid effort and shows their chops early. i dug it.
The Good: Being there is always a good thing! The Bad: It seems that Wilco is there too… The Ugly: That Wilco isn’t 1 person, but an entire band… too crowded there… This is the second Wilco album that I’ve had the displeasure of having to listen to, and I should maybe alter the word displeasure, as it wasn’t unpleasant, more just bland… The other album received the main commentary that “it was 40 minutes too long…”, I guess that is really what Wilco is after: creating albums which their fans can enjoy for lengthy periods, while those who aren’t impressed can’t wish to be over and done with. I do have to say that this album, in comparison with Yankee Foxtrot Whisky something, was more palpable. As pure background music while you are focused on anything but the album, it performed stellar! 3* for it’s ability of just disappearing into the background… Hello, this is me after listening to the album a second time… fucking Wilco, starts growing on you with that laid-back fusion of this, that and the other thing. I am starting to understand how certain people compare this to Exile On Main Street. Bumping the album up to 4* as it starts to grow on you...
I really like early Wilco... basically everything before Sky Blue Sky. But after a fresh listen, I am happier with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost is Born than even earlier works. I would have shortened Being There, in retrospect. Still a solid album.
Enjoyed listening to this album. It sang of things and feelings that were very relatable to most people. Music itself was good to just either totally immerse into (eyes closed and just listen and feel), or have playing while moving about getting tasks accomplished.
I really loved this. I have never heard it before, but everything was right about it today.
90s american indie, which i tend to find interesting as we in the uk were so caught up in what was going on over here. walks the line between indie and alt-country - a fine place to inhabit
This is admittedly as long as I just complained about The Verve's album being. But this is early Wilco, not the overrepresented genre of britpop. I'm already a Wilco fan, but hadn't listened to this album all the way through before. It won't supplant A Ghost is Born or Sky Blue Sky as my favorite album of theirs, but this is peak alt-country right here.
Long... album, but one that I will like on more listens. This is especially considering how their next album "SummerTeeth" is one of my favorites of all time. Last song sounds like Honky Tonk Women
12/11/24 After a slow burn, the album picked up.
Favourite songs: Monday, Dreamer In My Dreams, Kingpin, I Got You (At the End of the Century), Outtasite (Outta Mind), Forget the Flowers Least favourite songs: Misunderstood 4/5
Enjoyable album. Not much to say about it but I really liked it despite its long running time.
Solid straight-ahead rock with a nod to country. Fine musicianship.
Pretty great. Outtasite (Outta Mind) and Outta Mind (Outtasite) seem like they’re based on the melody from the Sesame Street theme. Which is wonderful
Really enjoyed. Mellow
hehe the artist pfp on spotify looks like a happy face C:
I knew we'd see Wilco on here eventually, but expected it to be YHF or Summerteeth. Comparatively, I haven't spent a ton of time with this one -- a mammoth double album weighing in at 77 minutes long. Misunderstood is a great opener -- rough mix with heaps upon heaps of distortion, setting the melancholy tone right out of the gate. The change-over to Far Far Away taps into the alt-country heritage from which Wilco was born. Weeping guitars and soft-keys casually stroll over this one with Tweedy's carefully pained vocal delivery. Monday is a poppy cathartic release coming out of Far, Far Away. Three songs, three distinct feelings, but they all feel very much in family. Outtasite (Outta Mind) feels like an Elvis Costello distillation. Fine enough little ditty with the skittering guitar echo and tight lyricism. Made all the better by the Christmas carol adjacent rendering of its inversion Outta Mind (Outtasite) on side two. Forget the Flowers is a quintessential Wilco song if there ever was one. You have the alt-country influences via banjo pluckery and slide guitar, but paired with the poppy, sadly-sweet lyricism of Tweedy. This is one I tend to forget, but love every time that it plays. The message is just so pretty and well delivered -- don't forget the good times. Red-Eyed and Blue is the reason I tend to forget Forget the Flowers. This is one of my favorite Wilco songs that is a precursor to the energy they bring to YHF. Simple, but effective with a "ghostly" element to the way that piano is mixed in. I just love it. Actually started working and this fell a bit into the background. God I love Sunken Treasure. Has a little bit for everyone -- the broad appeal of the pop structure, great lyrics, and some subtle but wonderful effects. I kind of wish they had re-sequenced The Lonely 1 and Dreamer in My Dreams. I'm sure it was intentional, but my body was ready for the album to be done after The Lonely 1 -- I was at peace. And then the distorted energetic Dreamer in My Dreams kicked off. I like the song, but it certainly leaves a different taste in your mouth. In my eyes (ears really) this is a high 4. I'm not usually into long albums (45 min is a sweet spot) but its hard to argue with the atmosphere that Tweedy and Wilco create here. The songs go back and forth between stripped down, melancholy alt-country and more up-beat romps. Along the course they pluck the strings of psychedelia ever so slightly and sample harmonization a la The Beach Boys. End result is a confident demonstration of the sounds, lyricism, and songwriting that Wilco would refine into their crowing achievement: YHT.
Misunderstood is insanely good on mushrooms. Tim we listened to it when we did them in CP and it sent me. I've heard a lot of these songs but not the whole thing. The sometimes subtle (and always very much not subtle) psychedelia in this album is awesome. High 4. Can't wait for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot which I assume will be on here.
Album is definitely too long, but there are great tracks on it. I still can't believe that Uncle Tupelo's No Depression isn't on this list. Without Uncle Tupelo, there would be no Wilco (or Son Volt) or many other bands. They literally created a new genre of music.
What a surprise to get this record. It is filled with great folky tunes, as well as some hard hitting rock and power pop gems. While it does drag on a little bit and could certainly be condensed, I am glad I discovered this album.
I actually liked this quite a bit. Might be my favorite Wilco album.
Funky, interesting enough for its length.
Even though it’s nothing special and it’s definitely bloated it just feels so nice, warm and cozy. I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for this kind of sound. Will definitely be coming back to it and can’t wait to check out more from Wilco (I’ve given 5/5 to mermaid avenue).
Track 1: Misunderstood (8/10) The piano in this track is gorgeous. This is my first exposure to Wilco, and while I'm a bit anxious about the album runtime, this song is a good first impression. Track 2: Far, Far Away (8/10) Awe man, this is a great country rock song. Super chill and I really enjoy the vocals. Track 3: Monday (7/10) Didn't capture me like the first two tracks but I like the horn arrangements and it's pretty catchy. Track 4: Outtasite (Outta Mind) (7/10) Good track, short and to the point. Track 5: Forget the Flowers (8/10) Banjo makes every song better. Great guitar solo in this one too. Track 6: Red-Eyed and Blue (9/10) What a beautiful song! I even love the corny whistling near the end, this is easily my favourite song so far. Track 7: I Got You (At the End of the Century) (7/10) Solid rocker, could have been a huge hit in the early 2000s. Track 8: What's the World Got in Store (7/10) Cute little track. Track 9: Hotel Arizona (6/10) This one kind of went by without amy emotional response from me, which I found weird cause it's definitley a good song. Just one of those moments where I felt nothing from something that's obviously worthwhile. Oh well. Track 10: Say You Miss Me (9/10) So cute I wanna cry! Great end to the first half of the album. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm gonna take a slight break before I start to feel the length of the album lol Track 11: Sunken Treasure (7/10) Pretty good, slightly longer than it could have been. Track 12: Someday Soon (6/10) Pretty standard southern rock tune. Track 13: Outta Mind (Outta Sight) (6/10) Meh...not too into the second half of this album so far. Track 14: Someone Else's Song (9/10) Very folksy, a highlight for sure! Great lyrics. Track 15: Kingpin (7/10) Pretty good, I loved the intro but the rest of the instrumentation isn't bad. Track 16: (Was I) In Your Dreams (6/10) Pretty boring track, wasn't wowed by his vocal delivery either. Track 17: Why Would You Wanna Live (8/10) Loved the instrumentation for this one. Very laid back but still fun! Track 18: The Lonely 1 (6/10) Couldn't keep my eyes open for this one lol Track 19: Dreamer in My Dreams (7/10) This feels like an improvised jam, but in a good way. Good end to the album. Overall: 7/10 The biggest weakness of this album is definitley it's length. I don't think the material was good enough to justify this being a double album. The first half would have made a pretty stellar album on it's own, but as a whole it's not that special. Still enjoyable and I have a couple songs I'm saving for later. Fav Song: Red-Eyed and Blue Least Fav Song: (Was I) In Your Dreams
Wilco doesn't achieve perfection until their next album, in my opinion (and maintain that perfection for three subsequent albums as well). Being There still has a bit of filler and the feel of a band that hasn't exactly found their identity. That said, it's a very, very high 4 stars and still an excellent album. "Misunderstood", "Sunken Treasure", "I Got You (At the End of the Century)"...I mean, come on. 4/5
Slight disappointment when I put this on, and realised that it's wasn't Wilco Johnson of Dr Feelgood. Still, might as well listen. Some pleasant melodies and heartfelt lyrics make Being There an rather good 'alt-country' album. The songs here are accessible and will probably stand repeated listening. Any fans of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Byrds , Big Star etc will find satisfaction. The main down point being that some judicious pruning down to a single disc would have improved things. Disc two feelslike a "collector's edition Bonus Disc ".
i didn’t love the last Wilco album on this list but i really liked this one!! i think it shined brightest with the calmer, downtempo songs but there was more of those so the whole album worked really well
The rare double album that doesn’t feel too long. It’s like a sampling of the greatest hits of American music—a little early Beach Boys here, a little folk there.
Sabroso, ligero, padrísimo. Ojalá haya más de Wilco por aquí. No les había entrado y lo disfruté bastante.
The opening track of Being There, “Misunderstood”, epically rocks you and announces that this album is not your father’s alt-country. https://tinyurl.com/mr4aevaw
Goddamn terrific, and too goddamn long.
Yesterday I gave Julian Cope a hard time for including 18 song on his boring album. Wilco included 19 on this. Is it too long? Sure. Is it somehow fine by me? Also sure.
At first it seemed like Tweedy was a little too concerned with rhyming in an almost couplet style. Especially with that pattern being so strongly felt on the opening track, I couldn't help but hear it throughout the double album. Wow. A double. Is this really the Wilco album I must hear before I die? Will there be others? Asking because this is a good record, but it's a picture of the band before they became the Wilco that broke through their own initial constraints. The expanded Wilco, the Wilco++, the Wilco that integrates the disparate pulls of their interests rather than just shifting entirely to different places / sounds / genres / intentions. I didn't hear this until after *that* Wilco was firmly established. It's hard to listen and enjoy this knowing the amazing work that comes next, and to not compare them against each other. Wilco vs Wilco. In short, this is a good record. A bit long and uneven. A bit clumsy in places. A bit alt rock. A bit country. A bit alt-country. But promising. The amazing thing is that the promise is fulfilled in ways that you can't quite see coming from this record. I mean, they're probably there, but they aren't yet fully known to the band themselves at the time either (at least by how this record sounds and presents itself). I probably wouldn't have liked this that much if I had heard it when it came out either. Past me likely would've found it frustrating in its lack of focus or found it wanting for a crisp integrated aesthetic. But "now me" does enjoy the meander more (well, at least I can tolerate it) and so here we go...this review is a meandering too. It's a double album of a review. It's on point at times and other times you're left wondering why certain decisions were made. Was that really the best choice there? I don't know. Only time will tell.
Note to self: do not groan when a band is described as an 'American rock group'. Ok there's been 100 or so on the list churning out the same racket but don't despair because just occasionally there is an album where the exception proves the rule. Exhibit A: 'Being There' by Wilco
I've missed this album so much. I haven't listened to Being There in a long time. I recently thought I should go back and listen again and also to AM. Being There still holds up for me a quarter century later. The order of the songs, the production, everything about it makes it as much of a welcome breath of fresh air today as it was 25 years ago.
1hr20 is too long for an album I liked this album a lot more until Albert put me onto another album of theirs which is better…
Somehow Wilco exited the 90s without the 90s rock band dust settling on them too much. It’s a pretty timeless sound that is diverse and varied. The can switch from rocking to crooning as good as anyone. And what an outro! Dreamer in my Dreams! My only critique is that it could have been a shade shorter.
Wide ranging, packed with catchy tunes, country flavours, Beach Boys flavours, cracked moments - a deep and involving listen, from a band transitioning into themselves
Enjoyed this album, relaxing songs.
Liked it.
I didn’t get into Wilco until YHF and I never went back to their earlier stuff, thinking it would be too alt-country for me. So this was a nice surprise! Wilco just sounding like Wilco. Clearly they are doing more than just repeating themselves; I’m not suggesting everything sounds the same (though they do have a distinct sound), just noting that if you like other Wilco albums you will probably like this. Also, every single time I have tried to write “Wilco” I’ve written “Wico” and is that just me?
An ambitious work, it is not as beautiful as some later albums but looking back at this you can see how this points to those works.
4/5
Good album
Pleasant folk/country with mellow vibes and some interesting turns. It's an album to get lost in one hazy afternoon.
Not given Wilco a proper listen before, yeah like this quite a lot. Worth listening again for sure
Tykkäsin kyl tästä, vaikka vähän pitkä näin tuplalevynä.
It’s been a good week of albums!
I might give this four stars without adding a song to my playlist. Just good vibes. (Well, bleak, depressing vibes, but they sound nice.) update: I did add a few.
Great record for guitar lovers. Features talent showcasing a number of different styles of music. And the guitar is not overdubbed or put into a bunch of effects pedals etc. Good music. A+
Day181 - listening to whole albums is the best way to take in wilco. i knew a few songs before this list but now after my second album i can see why wilco is on here.
Lil angsty at times, but in a good way.
I forgot this was a double album. Takes me back to college, when I discovered Wilco.
I love Wilco but its still rare that I put on Being There over other albums. A great showcase for his songwriting but a bit long. Not the one I'd recommend for someone I'm trying to get into Wilco but still great to me
One time, a long time ago, one of my brothers got mad at me after he played a live version of Misunderstood and I told him I thought Wilco was overrated. Wilco is one of those perpetually 3.5 groups for me, I'm between liking them and really liking them. I'll be generous today because I wound up seeing them years later and it was a pretty good show and this album has some good tunes I had forgotten about.
Two Wilco albums in the first 27, what are the chances? Glad I like them! Wilco make country rock sound brilliantly different. Imaginative, unpredictable, melodic, emotional and beautiful - uniquely them. So many great songs, I could listen to this all day. Misunderstood, Far, Far Away, Kingpin, The Lonely 1 and Dreamer in My Dreams all stood out and got second and third plays.
A no skips double album that cemented Wilco as one of the greatest alt-country acts of all time. Shades of experimentation and some punk edge in the Peter Laughlin referencing opener Misunderstood, one Wilco’s best live songs. From the start, Tweedy makes it clear this is not another Uncle Tupelo-esque retread a la A.M. Jay Bennett’s songwriting contributions and Bob Egan’s lovely pedal steel place this album somewhere between standard alt-country and the lush orchestral/power pop of Summerteeth. It is the record in which Wilco first showed signs of greatness.
Being a double album automatically puts any record on shaky ground, and this is no different. It's very hit and miss. The misses are forgettable. The hits, though? Soft, introspective alt-country with lovely melodies supplemented by Jeff Tweedy's voice which hits you just right. There's a beautiful sense of yearning and melancholy that you get while listening to this. A lot of emotion is packed into the simplicity of the music. Wilco has been a familiar name for a long time, and now I understand why they always seem to pop up in music conversations. Standouts are Outtasite (Outta Mind), I Got You, Say You Miss Me, Sunken Treasure, and Kingpin.
Pretty good album, but doesn't feel like anything groundbreaking, hence I do question its inclusion. YHF is obviously on the list and is clearly the more influential and interesting Wilco album. Fave Tracks: I Got You (At the End of the Century), Hotel Arizona 3.6/5
It’s a 4.5 star album
4.5!
Tror den var chill
Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
Schöner Gitarrenrock. Melodisch gut anzuhören. Auch ein wenig Indipendent
Very good, but extremely long. I prefered the faster and upbeat songs to the more mushy ones, but they weren't bad either. 8/10 Would I listen again? Probably
Stirring album that evokes the kind of melancholy that only country music can. Expands the genre to be accessible to those who've never owned a gun or a pick-up truck
Better than the last wilco album, still slightly lazy vocals bit quite enjoyable
Not bad I'll give it another listen someday. I may like it better then Yankee Hotel Foxtrot we'll see how a second listen goes
Loved this album. Romantic, nostalgic, fun. Definitely could have been shorter, but I enjoyed myself. I loved that the album ended on Dreamer in My Dreams.
I like this for the most part but it felt a little samey by the end. Like they made the same album twice
Solid. 4.5
This was my first time ever hearing Wilco. Very unique sound and a very smooth listen.
I should be listening to more Wilco.
Damn this album is good.
3.5
The album was a bit long to listen to all at once, but I think I'd really enjoy these songs if I listened to them individually in the future.
Solid record except the second half which was a bit of a let down . Loved the guitar works and the instrumentation.
Gram parsons era Stones. Great album.
Really liked this - it reminded me of LCD Soundsystem at points. That said - I wasn't crazy about some of the country elements.
Actually pretty good, but really long. Nice 90s light rock with a little southern Americana sprinkled in
I have a friend who used to LOVE Wilco. And I can see why. It's supposed to be a country mix. But I can't see it, even with the steel guitars. I really like far far away. Outta Mind is great as well.
Certainly longer than most, and took a few times to get through. I definitely begins to pay off more on repeat listens... it has the singer-songwriter/rock vibe that I also get from Paul Westerberg. I like that the music isn't afraid to get noisy/challenging, though I believe it pays off much better on Misunderstood than with Sunken Treasure. There are a bunch of really strong songs including Far, Far Away, Monday, Say You Miss Me, that make it compelling. Though it begins to drag a bit, there's nothing that is bad here.
“Sunken Treasure” and “The Lonely 1” are brilliant tracks. Sedately pleasant.
Rating: 7.5/10 Very good album overall. Really enjoyed the melodies, passionate singing, and use of a variety of different instruments. The implementation of country elements was very well done, it complemented the singing extremely well and the other genres (mostly rock) that they used. As good as a lot of this album is, it is too long. Especially in the second half the songs start to drag more and are not as interesting as the songs on the first half; definitely would have benefitted from being one disc. Favorite songs: Misunderstood, Far Far Away, Monday, Outtasite (Outta Mind), I Got You (At The End Of The Century), What's the World Got in Store, Someday Soon, Kingpin, Dreamer in My Dreams. Worst songs: Someone Else's Song, Why Would You Wanna Live.
you may say i'm a dreamer
Apparently I had like Forget the Flowers before. Its nice but not too biting.
Really great early album by Wilco that fleshes out their sound a lot more than their debut, AM. Lots of great songs, many of which became staples of their live shows for decades after this. Not their best work, but some wonderful, classic alt-country style Wilco 4/5
Ok background music. A bit forgettable but it is calming, nice guitar.
Never really understood the Wilco hype earlier, but this was a really pleasant listen. Guess I’m getting old!
Really enjoyed that second half of this 19-track album. I heard some definite Tom Petty, John Mayer, Jack Johnson, and Rod Stewart in this music. I would want to hear more
2/6/24. I’ve slept on Wilco for awhile. For a double album in length, each song brought a unique experience and kept me engage throughout. I need to listen some more.
A bit long but super chill
An artist I have never heard and he was excellent
Not bad, didn't mind listening to this one.
Atmospheric, road trip vibes. Calming-energetic
first time i’ve ever heard about alternative country. this album starts off nice. mellow, melancholic, brings up memories i’ve never had. an interesting mix between country-esque and alternative rock. definitely not my usual but i like it.
Favorite: Misunderstood
Didn’t know what to expect from Wilco - figured just another indie 90s band. I really like this album. I will listen to this one often. That said it’s bloated - cut the filller and it would be awesome. Too long.
Hadn't given these guys the time they deserved before this listen through. It's a vibe. Melancholic. Enjoyed it and was definitely impressed by how much they must have inspired many of the bands I like that came after.
There is so much about this that I love. The long distance yearning (far far away) struck a chord when i heard it 30 yrs ago. It still does. You feel like your along for the ride in Hotel Arizona. Far, far away from those city lights They might be shining on you tonight Far, far away from you On the dark side of the room
This one felt very alternative country, a lot of alt rock angst and distortion in parts but also quite a lot of twangy guitar moments. The music feels interesting the way it changes song by song, the vocal delivery feels very introspective and enjoyable, feels like a record I'd come back to frequently tbh, enjoyed it
Didn’t know Wilco had that sound early on.
A modest 4 rating for me. It's a good album with the band stretching their legs and finding a sound even if they seem to fumble around a bit.
I think I get Wilco now. Album is a bit too long though. 4.5/5
4+
I love this sound, rootsy, affable power pop with earnest, relatable lyrics and hints of psychedelia. Shades of the Replacements and the Stones. Really enjoyable. Fave Songs: Far, Far Away; Say You Miss Me; Outtasite (Outta Mind); Red-Eyed and Blue; Someday Soon; Sunken Treasure; Hotel Arizona; The Lonely 1; Monday
Have heard Wilco before but never listened to an album through. Thoroughly enjoyable!
I've never listened to Wilco much, and following suggestions from the likes of this list and a recent interest in classic and alternative Country, I've been listening to some Wilco. After spinning 'Being There', I think I'm beginning to 'get' Wilco and will look more into their catalog for more examples like this enjoyable listen. 4/5.
Рок-н-ролл... Хороший, но мне запомнился только парой песен. Возможно, он популярен за счёт специфики американской культуры, смешанной с щепоткой инди-музыки.
Good album not the best of Wilco, from my point of view, but this is certainly in the their top 5.
Прилично гађа мој укус. Мало мекши звук, микс жанрова, али занимљиво. 8/10
I really liked this album, actually. It felt slow and understated but its impact built for me over time. Kingpin was the standout song for me.
Steady for Wilco, but not my favorite album from them.
Wilco is one of those bands that I feel like I ought to like, and I’ve meant to try out. I have and like Uncle Tupelo’s Anodyne, so that’s a good sign. It is also almost 77 minutes, which is a bit long. I actually split this listen into 2 sessions. I really like the sound, very clean and open, lots of acoustic guitar, piano, banjo, etc. call it alt country, indie, whatever; it’s a style I like. This would be an high 4 if some of the fat were trimmed, maybe a 5. As it is, it it’s barely a 4. But still a solid effort, I’ll listen to this again. 4/5
Well this is fantastic
It isn’t crazy catchy or anything but I really dig the sound and I like the singing. It just feels nice to have on, even though it doesn’t particularly pull attention.
Ne znan zašto sam prvotno da 3, baš u dobrom sićanju mi je osta album, pogotovo za žanr koji ne preferiram.
I am bias because I really like Wilco, but I love the sounds of this album. There is a peaceful, folk rock tone to the songs.
Moody, shoegaze, interesting, good to hear something new
I was getting into that, then saw there was a whole other disc, but that seemed quick, so who knows if I was listening to the right thing... Anyway, actually caught my attention and made me listen.
wilcos mix of alt country sounds a rock clicks for me. i dig these guys, and this album i kinda wish i could 3.5 star it....but its better than 3..so 4 it is
Love the early sound from Wilco. Touches multiple genres. A can’t miss album.
Un poco largo. Pero bonito. Menos la última canción.
Wow, niet verwacht dat ik dit goed zou vinden. Wel eens Wilco geluisterd, maar nooit echt iets aan gevonden. Dit wel!
I like Wilco. I've heard most of these tunes from the various live albums, but I haven't ever listened to this album. It's solid. I like the richer textures of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" but this record has a country feel which is nice. I can already tell I'm going to have to listen to this in the car driving around in the winter nice and loud.
Un poco largo. Pero bonito. Menos la última canción.
A pleasant, undemanding listen. Ideal music for a nice sit down and a cup of tea. I’m really liking some of the Randy Newman vibes.
It's a very well made country album. The production is rough but it gives a sense of authenticity to the music... it almost feels like you're there with them while they're playing. The only flaw is that it's way too long, and the second half is worse than the first one. But 90% of the songs are hit. Best song: Dreamer In My Dreams
Fantastic album
This is such a great experience. Maybe it caught me on the right day, but damn if my mood hasn’t been improved by the journey across all 87 minutes of this versatile album. It’s clearly a precursor to so many of my more modern favorite artists. I’ve listened to YHF, but never really understood Jeff and Wilco’s roots until hearing this. It felt like an Americana festival, condensed into one long album.
Bon album folk-rock, excellente guitare, bonne homogénéité
3.5 Interesting, will listen to it again
First time listening to anything by Wilco. No tracks stand out, but you can listen to the album straight though. Very enjoyable.
I can count on two hands the amount of double LP's that actually benefit from being that long. This is not one of them. Shame because there is some great material on here
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Say you miss me
Fave track: kingpin
I enjoy Wilco and probably need to spend more time with them. Strangely this seems to be the first time I've listened to this album. Anyway, quite enjoyed it and came away with at least 4 favourite tracks for now. Misunderstood Monday Red Eyed and Blue Sunken Treasure
This project has taught me that I quite like Wilco! This isn't quite as good as "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", but still pretty great! I actually gave this 4 listens over a number of weeks to let it percolate.... 🤠 Fave track - "Misunderstood" was a great opener - woulda liked more of the album to be like that. Also really dug "Why Would You Wanna Live"...
Love it. I haven't spent a ton of time listening to them in the past but was vaguely aware. First time listening to this all the way through as an album, and couldn't get enough. Love the mid-90's Matthew Sweet-ish guitar sound and acoustic-ish electric sound, with a The Shins mellowness. What's the world got in store -- unexpected highlight for me.
I don't think I've ever knowingly listened to a Wilco song before. It's strange that their popularity is right around the time I would have been listening to popular music. Maybe they just fell in a crack between what the local radio stations would play too rock for country, too country for rock. I hope we get more of them on the list. Thoroughly enjoyable.
The not Wilco album I'm used to but it's still good.
listened
pretty lengthy but there isn’t a song i’d cut. this is therapeutic easy listening alt country. easy to throw on in the back round and fall asleep too yet plenty of sustenance when you zoom in.
Wilco's alt-country / rock sound, and was very happy to find after the 10th track that this is in fact a double record.
vibes!!
Love it, akkurat sånn musikk jeg liker og helt riktig dag for meg
some upbeat tunes on this one!
HL: "Far, Far Away", "Say You Miss Me", "Outta Mind (Outta Sight)", "The Lonely 1" Starting to think I kinda like these guys- though I am surprised that this is the 3rd Wilco album I've heard (and 2nd discovered from this list) Didn't *really* need to be a double album, but there's no song in particular I'd want to cut to make it a quicker listen April 22, 2023
First time listening to this album, I’m a fan of Yankee foxtrot hotel so was looking forward to this album, and it did not disappoint, great sounding album with great songs. My only gripe would be the usual it’s just too long an album.
Pretty interesting mix of styles and genres in this album
An enjoyable record with some hints of folk, rock, country and alternative. Didn’t necessarily agree with folks saying it’s too long but I also have the benefit of a lot of listening time on my hands Would like to get more familiar with Wilco
At least 4 Omg its so long 5
I'm a pretty big Wilco but somehow I have overlooked listening to this album. It is a really good sampler of all Wilco's stylistic moods. Country, Americana, indie-pop, noisy rock. All of Jeff Tweedy's many moods are beautifuly represented. Tweedy can write a hook filled song that sticks in your head in just about any style. He is among the most talented songwriters in rock today. I have often wondered why a band like The Eagles reach mega star status and a band like Wilco, arguably crafters of better songs, toils in relative obscurity. I wish the world didn't work that way but it does. 4 stars
solid wilco album
This is very pleasant
Great album. Had explored it before during a Wilco deep dive. Always fun to dive again.
So indie it gave me a man bun
Genre: Alternative rock Review: Good alt rock music. Some songs like "Say You Miss Me" I really liked. Reminded me of other 90s bands like Television and Radiohead. Couldn't say I liked this as much as them. Rating: 7.5/10
Nicer als erwartet. Very 90s aber auch recht lang
4.5 Veel mooie nummers, paar kutte.
Listened Before? N This one was a surprise! I have heard of Wilco, and I knew of Jeff Tweedy from Eric Church's "Mr. Misunderstood", so it was cool to see the influence here. The Song "Misunderstood" is basically the original version of Mr. Misunderstood. Anyway, I like it. Good job Wilco. I really, REALLY like Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Dreamer in My Dreams
This holds up surprisingly well. It sounds like Band of Horses copied their homework from the 90s. I’ll give some more attention to Wilco going forward.
The first big step out of the alt.country or Americana ghetto was a major one indeed. Three stone-cold Wilco classics -- "Sunken Treasure," "Far Far Away" and "Misunderstood" which was epic live for years, and evidence of the sneakily innovative and even radical Tweedy. And "Outta Site..." is sufficiently nice to play twice (though one vastly prefers the more Brian Wilson-y of the two versions) The production trickery and fireworks are used to good and subtle effect, really good. The quieter songs all have their charms, and they're durable charms, too. One sees little reason why Summer Teeth, a.m., A Ghost Is Born and Sky Blue Sky shouldn't be on this list. This is easily one of the best bands of the last few decades.
Such high caliber song writing. A little long but it doesn’t really let up. Red-eyed and Blue is an amazing song title. Not quite a 5 but Wilco will get one.
Sure it's a bit long, but it's all really good. Far less of a drag than some much shorter albums have been. It could do without the Outta Mind (Outta Sight) reprise - I get that it's in a different style but it doesn't really add anything conceptually and feels kind of unnecessary to have them both at random points on the same album. But otherwise there's nothing I'd cut, it's a really consistent and versatile album that rewards the longer listen
Chill å schwag
I like Wilco and I like this album, but you don’t need to listen to it before you die. If you had to call any Wilco album ”essential”, it would be Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. But as I said, I like the album. The standard quality of songwriting is good and it foreshadows in some ways where the band was heading. Don’t look up the name of the drummer
Wilco is a band name I’ve heard many times and never listened to for some reason. Im glad I finally took the time to listen to this album, very 90s alternative.
Really enjoyed this one. They almost sound like a more modern version of The Band. A lot of the songs on here have a bit of an Exile on Main Street vibe which I appreciate. Good stuff.
A small surprise to see this double album from Wilco, probably one of the best American bands from the last 30 years or so. Always liked it, but it is nowhere near A Ghost Is Born or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot..
The first part gets 5 stars, the second doesn't completely live up to that level, but overall this is a very good take on country with an edge.
This was surprisingly good, and I would listen again. A variety of folksy acoustic tracks with great instrumentation and variety. When you are wanting something unfamiliar and comforting at the same time.
also never heard of them but I like it. makes me wanna swim in a creek.
Pretty nice rock album
I like this album, it reminds me of other albums I've listened to and enjoyed, but I can't put my finger on exactly what (Ok Go? Hot Hot Heat? Rooney?). It definitely sounds like a bunch of songs that would be on Scrubs. Would listen to again.
I love Wilco. This was unfortunately too long and god why with the chaos noise my dudes.
8/10
Yeehaw! Alternative country is a vibe, I actually kinda liked it. Red-Eyed and Blue was a very good song in my opinion. Overall, I’d say the content of this album puts it at about a 3, but with the Surprise Factor™️, it’s a 3.75, so we round to a 4. I’d probably revisit a handful of these songs, maybe one or two end up on the playlist.
Good second album that I never really listened to before. While listening to their discography I've always found I gravitated towards the middle of their catalog.
I'm a Wilco fan, but I connect a lot more with the later albums, starting with 2004's A Ghost Is Born. I can't quite verbalize what it is about this album that I can't seem to embrace. It might just be the pain that seems to emanate from the opening wail of guitar on track one through to the bitter end. Even the upbeat tracks have somber chord changes that belie a feeling that things just aren't alright. There are great tracks — 19 is a lot of music to absorb — and the band is killer. Like I said, I like Wilco a lot, but I never loved this album. I probably enjoyed this listen more than in the past. Hard to rate. I guess 'tis the season to round up, and certainly for the best material here, this gets the 4.
The first major advancement of one of the pre-eminent (but most sneakily) innovative bands around. Things would get even better but the excellence on display here is unquestionable.
PREFS : Misunderstood, Far, Far Away, Monday, Outtasite (Out of Mind), Red-Eyed and Blue, I Got You (At the End of the Century), Hotel Arizona, Sunken Treasure, Outta Mind (Outta Sight), Kingpin, (Was I) In Your Dreams, Why Would You Wanna Live, The Lonely 1 MOINS PREF : Someone Else's Song
Bueno
- This album is entirely new to me. I’ve heard of Wilco, but never listened to any of their music - I like Outtasite (Outta Mind) (& vice versa) and Someday Soon - I can see myself listening to this again
As a middle aged white guy I'm obligated to give any Wilco album at least three stars.
Wilco is weird in the coolest way. They’re hard to pin down. I’m not really sure what genre they’re in or who to compare them to - but that’s probably what makes them cool. Really dig this one.
Прослушано! Отличный альбом, обязательно переслушать.
Every song here was great, but honestly not every song needed to be here, if that makes sense. Sometimes a double album just isn't worth it. If this was maybe 60% the length it could be an easy 5.
Wow, my only complaint was the length, but this one is quite cozy and warm.
I think I got a Wilco album before??? And didn’t really like it but regardless this one was really good. It was a mix of country blues and rock and the whole thing, while long, was nice to listen to. Monday was my fav song
4.0
there’s something repellent about tweedy but the dude writes a good tune
Eclectic mix of sounds. Started very loud and aggressive, yet the vocals had a big contrast with the guitars. Indie feel to the album, just indie enough to not be pop, but definitely has some of the songwriting hallmarks of pop. Great album that will go into my rotation in the future, this is my first time listening to this band, but I have heard of them before.
Not bad
I love Jeff Tweedy’s voice and songs. I like all the really noisey stuff at the end of misunderstood and sunken treasure. The three endings of Dreamer in My Dreams are fun. 4.5
As usual, I'm not the greatest fan of alternative, but country is nice. Personal opinions aside, the musicians are very skilled and the compositions aren't lacking either.
Wilco! The story of one of America's premier 21st Century bands begins at earnest with this once single album priced double album and no corner is left untouched, making the best out of their adopted scenario. At times it can be sprawling and a bit bloated for it's own good but, when one has the gumption to let the world know of their abilities, just being there will be worth it. Favorites: Misunderstood, Far, Far Away, Outtasite (Outta Mind), I Got You (At the End of the Century), What the World Got in Store, Say You Miss Me, Sunken Treasure, Outta Mind (Outta Sight), Kingpin, Why Would You Wanna Live, Dreamer in My Dreams.
What a banger in Misunderstood to kick off the album Someday Soon was gorgeous. Listening to this only knowing Wilco for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, this album was a great showing of some of the diversity of the band. Wish i could give it a half star, fully deserving of 4.5
Not my favorite of theirs, and it's a bit bloated, but still damn good. Best track: Kingpin
I haven’t listened to much Wilco. This album is really good. Some songs remind me of the Rolling Stones.
An interesting and eclectic album, with some country inspiration sometimes. Favourite songs: What's the World Got in Store, Hotel Arizona, Sunken Treasure, Someday Soon, Dreamer in my Dreams
Imagine that you can walk into a place where you know everyone in the band, you know almost everyone in the room, you've had hard times but the feel of the room counters that, and the music just sweeps through being a chant to an intimate, worn feeling. I'd shout along to these songs and hum them in the quiet.
Didn't love everything, but overall really good. One of my favorite songs is actually on this: Say You Miss Me
