Colin Farrell introduced them on snl
Scissor sisters is one of those bands that sounds great for a few songs, but gets old. It's fucking catchy in places though. A lot of it sounds vaguely like other songs, like if Elton bummed Bowie, but in a good way. 4/5.
Take Your Mama is one of the greatest singles of all time.
Reminds me of a very specific time in mu life. I actually think it pretty solid catchy pop, the opening 4 tracks are great and the ending track is same level
I'd only ever heard I can't decide by this band and I had no idea that they were from the early 2000s. I assumed that it was an 80s thing but after listening to this whole thing I can see the early 2000s vibes. It was pretty good overall, with the first half being way better than the second half, and was a fun 2004-version-of-synth/glam-rock type thing. My favs were Laura and take your mama and the comfortably numb cover was my least fav.
Thumping! Laura starts with the big hooky swinging and I am here for it. The lead singer's voice is so fucking high. Lovers In The Back Seat has so much groove. THERE AIN"T NO TITS ON THE RADIO!!
Pretty good overall.
Solid and fun. The first few bars of Laura are incredibly catchy and just have me bouncing along. A lot of the other track and similarly fun and a bit of a modern, peppy electronic elton john. I was intrigued by their Comfortably Numb cover, but that was probably the track that landed least with me. Still enjoyable.
Not exactly a masterpiece, but does exactly what it sets out to do: to be a relatively simple but well-crafted pop album! Love the production and instrumentation throughout (manages to be extremely catchy without being overly simplified), and while the lyrics weren’t anything to write home about, the vocalists all hold their own weight well. Definitely will give this a re-listen soon! (Favorite Tracks: Take Your Mama, Lovers in the Backseat, It Can’t Come Quickly Enough)
Alright alright. Sounds like nothing of its time. Bee Gees and Elton John meet the 2010s. Except it was 2004.
Pop
Veel positivisme. Kon het pop-gehalte wel smaken
I don't know if this album was so good or if I was just happy to not listen to the previous one. That being said, I did thoroughly enjoy every song.
Great surprise here. Awesome songs that defy genre.
Cool, I got an album that was missing! I didn't expect it to be so electronic, as I didn't read the genres before listening, but it was cool. This was pretty good. A couple songs I disliked, but I think I quite enjoyed the sound overall. I definitely have more interest in this band than I did before. My favourite songs were Laura and Comfortably Numb.
4 stars
Good, kind of dancey. I think I’m legally obligated to give this at most a 4 since I’m not gay, though.
Loses steam towards the end
Fun, Happy Pop Rock.
Pretty fun album. Lots of energy.
I was happily impressed with this album. I pretty much liked all of it and VERY much liked much of it. probably a solid 85 or something. Haven't seen the next album yet but I will probably end up listening to this again after I trudge through that one, lolz.
I had never heard of this band prior, but there are some wonderful pop tunes on this record. Some don’t land for me, but the ones that do are REALLY great!
Joyous fun album that is still a good listen
Great
What in the Stayin' Alive, Bee Gee's-ass cover of Comfortably Numb is this? The rest of the album is pretty solid honestly (Mary, Lovers in the Back Seat), but at the risk of coming off as an old man defending the honor of a bunch of old rich assholes (read: Roger Waters), that cover is just offensively bad. Like, a complete misinterpretation of the original song. Making a dance-y, disco cover of a song that's all about being so drugged out of your mind that you can't move is just a weird ass take. And I don't even care much for Wall-era Pink Floyd. But what do I know, Waters apparently liked the cover, so fuck me I guess, lol. But anyways yeah, the album isn't half bad. Kinda in line with other weird throwback bands on the list from the 90's and 2000's like The Cardigans and Darkness (Cardigans being the clear winner of the three IMO). Would I put it on the list? Absolutely not, but definitely not an album that isn't worth a listen. But not really my vibe either.
This albums definitely is a lighter listening experience than other albums - musically not as complex as others, but yet not bad. More or less what you'd expect from a glam-rock band. The keyboards on the album are very prominent (cf. "Mary") and the vocals are sometimes "Bee-Gee-like" (not nessecarily a bad thing). In general I find this album quite good with some really good tracks ("Mary", "It Can't Come Quickly Enough"). Another nice touch was the more acoustic final track "The Return to Oz", which shows that the group is not solely restricted to a more electric sound. The one thing that bothered me the most was the cover of "Comfortably Numb" - and while there are songs, where the cover version can hold up or even superceeds the original, I didn't like this cover version at all.
pretty ok, I did already had liked one of their songs and loved it. overall the whole album is fine, i would listen to it while gaming but other than that i would not keep it on repeat
The biggest selling album of 2004 in the UK, often referred to as the greatest gay album of all time, though curiously never fully accepted in their US homeland. They are often referred to as a Glam rock band, which I can understand when you hear 'Take your mama' I do like it when they basically sound like a 70s Elton John record, but I hear no Slade, T-Rex and the Sweet in this band. There is plenty of disco and 80s power pop in their canon and it's unquestionably retro in places. I could never fully accept the 'Comfortably Numb' cover as a fully credible piece of work, but I concede that plenty of folk just a bit younger than me really like this album. Despite a great single, their follow up album couldn't quite match it - probably as they weren't original in the first place....
This album features one of the best songs of all time, but it’s not by the Scissor Sisters... But I really have to say, listening to the album was fun and there are a few good songs on it; it really surprised me.
Everything about the Comfortably Numb cover has been said already, I’ll just add this, the cover is now almost as old as the original was when the cover was released.
I prefer the follow-up as it feels more solidified and energetic, but this is very fun on its own.

lol that was crazy
Aww a party album the day before a music festival😍 These guys are wild, saw them a year ago, haven't been the same since. I love the camp sound, a bit Elton John, a bit George Michael in parts. And their version of Comfortably Numb is really good.
Ihan mukavaa rallattelua.
Eli iha jees meno.
Glam rock, electroclash, nu-disco.
I can't believe I recognized multiple songs by these guys. This was a fun album. A beegees-esque disco album in the 21st century is a welcoming idea but it's not going to have any staying power with me. It was fine.
Another male dominated band marketing themselves as females. This album sounds a bit like Elton John. The singing's pretty good, though the vocal effects are kinda questionable. I'm not really a fan of the dance pop beats, but it's not bad. The best tracks are "Laura" and "Mary".
Meandering pop
Overall it was something different. A couple songs I liked but nothing too crazy.
Fun, but a too disco-y for my taste.
Its ok Bad pink föoyd cover
Before listening thought of them as light weight pop band. After same opinion. That said i dont dislike it. You can hum and tap along to your hearts content. Would i die on a hill for the no. Would i turn of if on radio no. A solid 3.
I really enjoyed this when it was released, it just hasn't aged well
Some cool ideas and I love what they represent but it’s certainly a hit or miss project for me
Very unexpected. Knew nothing of the band or their sound. Loved the poppiness and how it flowed from track to track. Laura, Mary and Dirty/Gorgeous were my standouts.
This album was unexpectedly a good time for me. I'm not a fan of disco, but you could definitely hear its influence. Overall, I liked it, but I have to subtract a star for that horrendous Comfortably Numb cover. Liked Songs Added: Take Your Mama Tits On The Radio
really interesting band i hadn't heard of
Again. Why is there only one woman in this band
A decently indecent pastiche of 70s and 80s pop rock. Gotta respect the Scissor Sisters for breaking through the deep homophobia of the mainstream media in 2004 with some deeply gay aesthetic choices. One problem with drawing on such a wide set of musical styles is you're unlikely to hold most peoples' interest across a full album. For me, I loved the disco songs; the glam / arena rock songs did not scratch the itch.
Its just not my bag. I think I have heard the singles too much as they got (and still do get heavy rotation). Don't like the falsetto delivery. I don't hate it and they have some catchy tunes its just not for me.
Too many S’s
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a rock album that borrows heavily from disco and dance influences. There's a cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb which is completely unexpected, but works fairly well. This album is pretty good, although I would say I would need to be in the mood to listen again.
I was 18 when this came out, but only remember the band by name and was wondering how I missed it. After listening, I totally see why it passed me by. Definitely not something I would have appreciated at the time. Even now, after listening, I get why it might have been a big deal, but a whole album of this is too much for me. Some funky , groovy songs, but I think I would appreciate them more if a song or two were sprinkled amongst a playlist.
Funny? Ugly? Sometimes annoying, sometimes fresh. If you hear not too much is a nice change.
Listening session: may 13th, while crocheting Listened to before: no Thoughts: sure this is not the best music ever made, but it’s surely fun to listen to and that’s not always the case on this project Favourite tracks: Take Your Mama, Mary & Filthy / Gorgeous
I had never heard of this band. I was kind of enjoying it, and then came the Pink Floyd classic “Comfortably Numb”. I almost vomited. In spite of how much I hated that cover, I enjoyed the rest of it enough to still give it three stars.
Very poppy, disco inspired music. Really well produced, and I appreciate the Pink Floyd cover as it's an unusual spin on a class song. Unexpected.
I did a double take over that Comfortably Numb cover. And the Sir Elton sounds like was pretty fun, too.
This was decent all the way through. Catchy and upbeat, nothing stood out except for the single, Take Your Mama, which is a really good song. No strong feelings about this one, it was decent, probably won't revisit.
Enjoyed
Some fun singles. Not sure it's sustained across an album
I remembered this a lot less than I expected. And I enjoyed this a lot less than I wanted.
ähüää glaub nanie vo dene ghört? fangt sehr lustig ah okee weiss iwie nanig was demit ahfange HAHAHAHA oke han denkt dass es es goofy cover wird sii vo comfortably numb aber SOOO GOOFY auchli beegees? respektiers aber würkli guet findis nöd es nimmt die ganze emotione und d rueh usem lied, was sicher extra isch aber joooo hahaha tits on the radio isch funny und au dur sin gsang im refrain sicher en verwiis uf video killed the radiostar filthy/gorgeous macht easy spass hahaha weiss nöd es ischmer alles chli z liecht und goofy die letschte 3 songs hendmer chli besser gfalle, hans gfühl die sind echli "ernster" gsi jaa nöd so min fall gsi. hans aber easy kreativ gfunde, knapps 3?
definitely different, loved their take on Comfortably Numb
A good album, but I'm knocking it a whole point because of the awful cover of Comfortably Numb. It may be petty, but fuck it lol
Great fun! I didn’t realize I knew some of these songs. Perfect for a sunny spring morning!
469/1089 - It's an alright combo of glam and disco. Mary sounded cool, iirc, I liked the mysterious chord progression in the post-chorus.
This was ok. Kinda fun, kinda campy.
Kind of a mash up of Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys with a little Bee Gee's thrown in but not as goos as any of them. Just alright.
It was one of the weirdest albums and most decent albums I’ve listened to
Well, what can I say. I’m a sap and I let myself enjoy this maybe more than I should have. 😂
Low-key amazing debut album. Mixing glam rock with electronica. But I could do without that cover of Comfortably Numb… 3⭐️
Pretty fun. I'm not super into the guy's voice. The cover of Comfortably Numb was very different and cool.
couple of good songs
Removed
Not bad
7.5
I enjoyed the 70s-like style of this
A good album but not the best scissor sisters album
Mmmm yes of course much to mmmmm yeah mm
Pretty good actually, not a fan of the Comfortably Numb cover
Camper than an Elton John show in Blackpool.
Je connais Scissor Sisters grâce à Just Dance 3 et I Don't Feel Like Dancin' et je m'attendais donc à un album qui bouge pas mal mais en fait non.
Bob Dylan stinks
Pretty fun and well produced. Just did not need 3 album sides
Very catchy and fun Pop record. I thought these guys were English for the longest time. Turns out they're New Yorkers. The Glam influences are refreshing and give them an edge not often found in 2000's mainstream pop releases. The genre diversity is also very welcome, form the Broadway-esque opener "Laura", to their controversial Electro-Disco take on Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb", all done very tastefully and in a self-aware manner. Also, incredibly gay of course. Key tracks: Laura Take Your Mama Comfortably Numb Mary Filthy/Gorgeous
That atrocious cover of Comfortably Numb almost dropped this thing down to 2 stars
Others have commented how awful early 2000s music was. The fact that the first three tracks on this album were all massively overplayed on UK radio says so. This album is fine, but only that.
“Take Your Mama” is insanely catchy, and that one did a lot of the heavy lifting for me. “Better Luck Next Time” was good too, and “Return to Oz” was another strong one. The big thing holding it back is that disco EDM version of “Comfortably Numb.” That did not need to exist, and it definitely dragged the album down for me. Full star deduction just for that.
A couple of really pretty good songs, a lot of pretty mid songs, and a couple of pretty bad songs. Overall a meh experience. I honestly would have guessed Scissor Sisters were earlier than 2004, but they also definitely have a 2000s sound to them.
Would rather have gotten some Blood Brothers but this was ok.
Sonntag, 19.04.2026 ~ Vormittags ~ Auf dem Weg zum Sport komplett durchgehört (Superfit, Europacenter).
For some reason I thought that I would enjoy this album a lot more than I did. I just think of another song with a man with a high voice singing gibrish. I'll remember it sometime. Take your momma was pretty good though.
Pretty good
I didn't reduce the score by one star for the heretic "Comfortably Numb" cover only because it wouldn't be fair.
I was into my electroclash back then and loved Comfortably Numb, bought this album on day of release and was surprised at how Abba-ish and dance oriented it was. Saw them live in Leeds and was a great gig, met the band they were all really nice (except Ana Matronic who I find painfully dull, her audience talk is always painfully forced and phony). But find it weirdly soulless and flat to listen to now.
Not what I expected, and surprised!
A pretty good album, I liked Laura the most.
'Filthy/Gorgeous' is phenomenal, and even 'Mary' had the feels. I guess other than that I'm not sure what the hype was all about. But hey it was fun!
This album is all over the place. There's no way I would have guessed this was made in 2004 because it all feels like it's from much earlier times. Where it's fun, it's really fun... Where it isn't, it isn't. Notables: "Laura" starts the album on a very Dolly Parton "9 To 5" riff which immediately triggers your brain into dance mode. "Comfortably Numb" is actually kind of a low point for me. Maybe I like the original too much to embrace this disco version. "Mary" proves 'the sisters' are actual musicians; very Elton John. "Tits On The Radio" is an instant classic for me "Filthy/Gorgeous" is too much. If there's one song that breaks the retro hypnosis, this is probably it for me.
Not much to say, it's music that is either nostalgic or derivative of better music, but it's not bad in and of itself, just not particularly memorable. Well, there was their cover of "Comfortably Numb" where they sounded like The Bee Gees, but that's not a good sort of memorable.
Early on I got a mental image of the vocalist as L’il Sweet from the Dr. Pepper commercials. Made it hard to take the music too seriously, but I don’t think this band took itself very seriously in the first place. Entertaining if unspectacular.
Better than expected.
Never heard of this, or this band. Early on, and has glam rock vibes, kinda funky with some funk guitars and bass. It has some of an indie dance rock sound on a lot of it, with a throwback vibe on some. I’m enjoying it but it does seem to be a little bit of going through the motions on some of these songs. The Comfortably Numb cover is like a straight electro disco song which I don’t particularly care for. Mary is probably my favorite. It’s a nice ballad, reminiscent of 70s rock. Some Elton John vibes There’s a fun vibe throughout all of this. Not disliking anything. But not sure it’s anything essential listening. Fun though. I like the throwback classic glam rock vibes and then a dance rock synth-over sound comes in that I enjoy way less. Somewhere between a 2 and 3. Was losing me but maybe won me back by the end. I’ll go 3. It’s an enjoyable album, but I’ll argue it’s not essential. But it’s fine.
Kind of a psychedelic post-disco trip. Lots of throwback elements here. Not bad, though not sure it's a certain hit for me. 3/5
Familiarity breeds contempt? Knew the singles from being EVERYWHERE when they were released. Can't say I was the biggest fan at the time. Overall it was fine but it was a bit of a "where are they now" moment.
Had enough of that. It is a fun album that has its moments but no more! It sometimes thinks it’s Elton John, sometimes Prince. And please no to that awful cover of Comfortably Numb.
Fine, but nothing I would want to listen to again.
"Tits on the Radio" and "Filthy/Gorgeous" are a couple of fun and campy disco pop songs. It's a shame then that so much of the rest of this album just sounds like Elton John. Even at their worst these songs are at least creative and memorable, but the personality of its best songs is often missing. Instead, the glam and piano rock sounds like a throwback without a fresh spin. Maybe the most intriguing song is the Pink Floyd cover. Such a catatonic song is an interesting choice to turn into a synth pop song, but I love covers that completely reimagine songs into the covering artist's style. Even if it doesn't quite work because of how rushed it feels, it's a big swing fitting of this glammy sound. If there were more big swings like that and fewer piano ballads, this would be a lot more memorable.
i've actually never listened to Scissor Sisters. musically very fun. i don't think i'll be turning this on frequently but i respect it
3,1/5
Fun but I don’t think I’ll listen to it again
Highlights: Laura, Comfortably Numb, Mary, Filthy / Gorgeous, Music Is the Victim, Skins, Get It Get It Scissor Sisters are the type of act that no one gives a rats ass about and pays no thought to them in their day to day life. At the same time they have an enormously interesting style - especially on the vocal delivery. I heard some of their hits, but never delved deeper than that. At moments it goes for this disco style and at moments it tries to be serious, but it never goes full goofy as the hits would have me to believe. I always thought they were British so it was quite a revelation to discover otherwise. Unfortunately, the second half dragged on a bit and ruined the initial positive impression. So overall I don't feel like revisiting the record, but the highlights will remain in rotation.
Their version of Comfortably Numb is unforgivable. Lucky Take Your Momma Out is a banger
It started off pretty strong with "Laura", "Mary", and the Elton John "Honky Cat"-influenced "Take Your Mama". After that it just sounded to monochromatic and repetitive. It was a strong effort, but lacked direction.
Take Your Mama and listen to this album with Laura.
it was okey it had some highlights but it didn't captivate me interesting sometimes irritating
Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: ️🏞️🥅🏙️ Production: 🙂↕️🧼🪩 Music: ✨🕺🤗 Rating: ✂️✂️✂️/5
This is a cool album! I really liked the eccentricity in the harmony and the riffs, and I feel like some of the hooks were really well written. Dancing in different sounding voice to text is butchering this but it’s pretty cool album.
Not bad. 3.5/5
ouais ça va mais bon
C'est coolos
So this is how I find out they aren't British?? A lot of songs here I remember from childhood! Apart from those, the album was pretty boring and not memorable 3 ⭐️
This was interesting. The name. The sound. A damn Comfortably Numb cover that sounds like Stayin' Alive? That gets a star in itself.
This was cool! Really eccentric and eclectic. Not really something I would revisit, but the campiness and creativity was admirable.
Noughties disco with a couple of bangers and an interesting cover of "Comfortably Numb"
Favorite Song: Take Your Mama
Yeah, it's all right. Fun if you're in the mood. Couple upbeat, clubby singles. Maybe loses a bit as an album. And loses a point for that version of Comfortably Numb.
2004 BeeGees. not in a bad way tho
I kind of forgot about this album and band. Really like Take Your Mama. Just a fun upbeat album, but nothing I'd listen to on repeat. 3/5
I found myself singing along to some of these catchy tunes, which made me smile🙂
mediocre, but not bad.
It's nice to see a band doing a bit, while still having good vocals/instrumentation, and excellent mixing. Unfortunately I am obligated to deduct 1 star for the senseless butchering of Comfortably Numb.
Pretty quirky, id say it’s a 3 star album for me. Was it offensive? No. Woukd I listen to it again? Probably not.
I struggled with rating this album. I started off really liking it, but by the end just wanted it to be done.
not the worst I have heard. grew on my after a listening more than once. Wish there was some room for 3.5 v 3.
I've become, comfortably numb
Can’t fathom how this could make the rankings. Seems like a knock off EJ. In saying that, it’s pop, cheeky, queer and honestly, maybe what 2004 needed. Not sure the Comfortably Numb cover sticks though, but at least it’s different…?! Fave tracks: Take Your Mama (classic), Filthy/ Gorgeous
Fun enough. 3/5
need to check this one out again
A fun and catchy pop rock album, if a little insubstantial. Could definitely see how this was a breath of fresh air at the time.
Tits on the radio
Fun glam rock album and very easy to jam and dance to. The use of multiple instruments, different sounds, and the vocalist’s falsetto really stand out. Really enjoyable, especially the first half of the album. Some songs reminded me of a rockier version of Culture Club.
I'm just gay enough to not care how gay this album is.
Nice pop. Wouldnt cross the road to engage with this but can the appeal. Nothing new to offer.
Difficult to score because the hits are unreal, but the rest is pretty mid and Comfortably Numb is horrid. I guess it shakes out as a three but I would say that a pop album is doing its jobs right if it gives you the level of bangers this does, regardless of what else is on the record.
Several songs were familiar to me but I thought they were Elton John songs.
A fun album and another band I hadn't heard before. I enjoyed the comfortably numb cover. Lots of energy.
Horrible Pink Floyd cover aside, I didn't hate this as much as I thought I might. 3/5
So surprised to see this one on here. I always thought it was so obscure when we listened to the two singles as kids. The rest of it is also good. Big Elton John meets Stevie wonder vibes, but it’s a little dated at points.
Fun album, missed it the first time around but glad for a chance to listen this time.
this record got absolutely worn out in the halls of the dance and music theater schools at my college. it's almost entirely good throughout, and an incredible synthesis of so many inspirations and styles without feeling dated (well, at the time. now it feels EXTREMELY 2004/5)
I remember really disliking this when it first came out. I think I found it to just be too much and too pandering to the "wow this is really gay!!!!!" MTV type coverage at a time when I was not very into flamboyance and very into seeming too cool for school. It was fine this time around. That Comfortably Numb cover is...a choice.
#822. Not the worst thing I've ever heard, kinda sounds like Elton John you got from Temu, but that Comfortably Numb cover was quite off putting. The original has a pleasant disassociate vibe, but the delivery of this one is jarring in a predatory kind of way. Like I feel like anyone who who legitimately likes this version of that song probably knows exactly where to get roofies from. 3/5: you can't see tits on the radio
Mixed bag. Hated the synths at the start of Laura, liked it overall. Did not hate the Pink Floyd cover (weirdly, considering how much I despise Madonna's American Pie).
Who knew there was a disco revival in the mid-aughts?
Odd, very much pop music .... I am curious what makes it the greatest "gay" album of all time. I did feel a little gay listening to it and I hear the glam....
Cheesy pop but OK cheesy pop
That was fun!. I remember the take your mother out all night song. But I never listened to the full album in 2004.
-ohhh this kinda bangs. far from the best album i’ve heard on here but it’s really catchy and actually maintained my interest from beginning to end -wasn’t big on all of it. kinda speechless on that Comfortably Numb cover. but it’s a definite contender for a relisten and a decent 3.5 -Favorites: Take Your Mama, Lovers In The Backseat, Filthy/Gorgeous
Keep thinking I'm listening to Elton John. Fun; little bit too bouncy for me.
I didn't realize that this album was so huge in the UK. Roughly 10% of UK households bought it. That's astounding.
Fun disco album, I'm just surprised that they're American
Worst pink floyd cover?
3- Stars (7/15)
I dont know about this one, especially the cover was very rough
3 stars
Somehow I missed this band when they originally came out. I think I somehow conflated them with Sister Sledge. Anyway this has some fun moments although it never gets to great. 3/5
Interesting but I don’t see why this is an album. I have to listen to before I die.
Funky, zany, dancey, it’s a fun album. Hard to say if I’d come back much but I definitely wouldn’t say it’s a bad album by any means.
Prior to this, the only Scissors Sisters song I had heard was Take Your Mama, and based on that, I expected the vocals would ruin this album for me. That prediction wasn't miles off, but I have to say, I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Not groundbreaking for 2004 by any stretch, but it's got some catchy tracks and good musicianship. Solid 3.
Fruityyyyy. This works so well, disco rock let’s go. Campy, fun, some stone cold originals and covers. It’s joyous and clearly is living its best life. Some belly flops but I can forgive them for the glorious gay peaks. In absolute terms the quality isn’t Beethoven but they nail what they are going for. Comfortably numb cover is so strange but also so compelling- bless them
No matter how gorgeously and precisely written the first two tracks are, I find all interest quickly fades after the Comfortably Numb cover. Everything after this seems flat in comparison to warrant a full relisten to the record. Laura and Take Your Mama are exceptional tributes to Elton John and glam rock. Best Tracks: - Laura - Take Your Mama - Filthy / Gorgeous Worst Tracks: - Tits On The Radio - It Can't Come Quickly Enough Rating: 6/10
Big gay party. Its shiny and slick and over produced and more than a bit fabulous. It dips off around halfway before picking up for the last couple of tracks. If this was a list of the best glam-pop albums then it would probably get a 5 but for me it sits around a 3.
507/1001
Some of these songs gave me good Elton John vibes, I liked this more than I thought! But, to be fair, I didn't listen to all of the album
Reprise lunaire de Comfortably Numb
I wish it was more over the top. Part of it feels tied to old sounds and styles. Comfortably Numb cover is much closer to what I wanted. It also made me think of a Wall made by idiot conservatives who see Pink performing on stage as a drag queen to prove some kind of shitty homophobic point but instead it becomes iconic.
:P Stark trea
Buen álbum de electropop. Un poco largo al final pero interesante. 6/10
Neutral as neutral gets.
NGL I hear how Djo was influenced by this album. His voice and singing style is very similar. I'm surprised how much I like it.
The "Comfortably Numb" cover is catchy but so weird, like the Bee Gees doing Floyd. Catchy but not really my style, so I don't anticipate revisiting it. It's fine. "Music is the Victim" and songs more in that vein (less falsetto vocals really I guess) stand out as more enjoyable.
This was my first time hearing this band and it was a fun album. It has a cool pink floyd cover as well.
On the upside, this album is upbeat and fun enough that it wasn't a chore to get through, and I could see how peoplenlooking for something to party and dance to might dig it. Still, there is something artificial/superficial enough about it that it feels more like a schick than actual creative music. And, if doesn't really rise to the level that I can understand it's inclusion on this list, especially since I am not sure (for better or worse) we've had any 1970s disco on this list, and this album leans so heavily on that source material.
Is it possible to be so tongue in cheek that your tongue ends up in another hemisphere? I vaguely remember 'Take Your Mama' playing on repeat on German MTV but I was never a fan. Listening to the whole album didn't really change my mind. I get the fun, glam, disco vibe they're going for, but it mostly doesn't land for me (but for 'Laura' which I really liked.) Maybe a little too polished. Maybe not catchy enough. Maybe a little too tongue in cheek.
3.5
Honestly I find the very the first four songs on the album actually very good Comfortably Numb I kind of like though I remember liking their live version on SNL better than the actual studio version but for sure "Laura", "Take Your Mama" and "Mary", and also the closer "Return to Oz" are the standout tracks the rest are kind of in a pop disco that I like but it's not necessarily all that for me. But the four that I highlighted definitely have that prime *Caribou*-esque Elton John feel. 7.4/10 overall.... Still a fun lesson though not an overtly great album. ★★★½
I think some of this album is very good. They're obviously influenced by Elton John, and when they lean into the glammier side of Elton, it's really solid. I think where things go awry is when they lean into Disco Elton. The Pink Floyd cover is a true crime against music. That being said, there's some good stuff here, like "Laura", "Mary", and "Take Your Mama". 3.5 stars.
In 2004 this beefy million seller managed to beat Keane to UK #1 of the year by 582 copies and of course outstripped other 2004 titans such as Franz Ferdinand, Killers and Mylo so for a brief time the UK really was a scissored isle. Album is at its utmost best when it’s either channeling Elton John to the max or doing gay disco versions of Pink Floyd. There are many great singles on this but they’re all kinda clumped near the start which leaves a disparity between the first and second half of the album as big as New York City night and Sahara Desert day. Take Your Mama is the key indeniable pop juggernaut here and Mary is super touching and heartfelt. Comfortably Numb cover is DIVINE. After that the songs do get very ho hum. Tits On The Radio is the main Ana Matronic and would be good except the melody is very crap and one note. Filthy Gorgeous is the last highlight and is Filthy Decent. Everything else is Filthy Drab or Filthy Doldrums.
I didn't love this one, but it was perfectly fine. I do wish "I don't feel like dancing" was on here... Might have bumped my rating up a little, that song goes hard. Maybe I'm not gay enough to get it, maybe it's just fine and that's it.
6/10
Recognizable songs, still average.
Upbeat music and creative lyrics that made me smile or laugh at a few moments. Lots of funk influence and driving baselines. A good variety of styles too, with some ballad-like songs thrown in.
A fun record, which, now that I think about it, it's not something that characterizes this particular list.
I must have owned this album at some point since I remembered most of the songs. There are plenty of catchy tunes here, it's basically candyfloss for your ears; not much of real substance, but fun to consume when you're in the mood for some fluffy sugar
Makes Elton john seem like Jerry Falwell. Take your mama out is an all time banger. Otherwise, theres nothing i needed to hear before I died on here, although its not bad.
Jolly, bouncy little tunes.
Nice, disco floyd was a crazy reach, it was ok but the album was a lot of fun glad I got to hear it, looking forward to playing it again. Sometime music should be just fun.
3.5
I remember not liking the Scissor Sisters’ self-titled debut when it first came out. Back then I was deep into indie and mod, and this felt like the opposite of what I thought was cool. But listening again today, I let it run—and ended up playing it three times. It’s fun, packed with pop bangers, and far better than I gave it credit for. With a broader taste in music now, I can hear the cleverness in the songwriting and the nods to Bowie, Gary Numan, and that glam-electro spirit. It’s a cool, confident record, and I’d happily put it on again when the mood strikes. Favourite track: Filthy/Gorgeous—with Mary and Laura close behind. Least favourite track: Honestly, every track earns its place. Album artwork: Superb. There’s so much happening visually, and it fits the album’s energy perfectly.
Discos lights! Lasers! Dance! There are some bops on here. Does it belong on this list? Probably not. Not sure how I feel about the Comfortably Numb cover. Happy I didn't even recognize it at first.
First Listen. 3 Fun album, sounded like Elton John in parts.
Liked it. This took me back.
2.8 I am the tinest bit partial to this band as our beer league hockey team used I Don't Feel Like Dancin for a win song for a season. Disco meets showtunes meets pop/rock
This album is over the top and bursting with energy, blending an eclectic mix of sounds with lyrics that must have felt genuinely avant-garde in the early 2000s. Most people will point to the “Comfortably Numb” cover—while I appreciate the creativity, I love the original too much to enjoy this version fully. What really caught me off guard, though, was “Return to Oz,” which feels like it could have fit right into The Dark Side of the Moon with its haunting tone and layered production. I enjoyed the opening track and found several others catchy, though some songs seem designed more for shock value (“Tits on the Radio,” “Filthy/Gorgeous”). Maybe I’m just too straight to completely get it, but it's equal parts bold and campy. Worth a listen.
I had many songs from this album on repeat in 2004. Still holds up well and is enjoyable to listen to...but I feel like there's a lot of skips on this album. Pretty middle of the road as an overall album, but "Take Your Mama" is a song that I will always enjoy. I also picked "Music is the Victim" for the playlist, which was always my second favorite song on the album ("Laura" almost made the cut, though).
Never heard of this one before today, but I liked it. Mostly solid, I’d say it was worth the 5 listens I got.
listening when: had to come back and listen the. ext day !! thoughts: if i didn’t know when the album came out and had to guess i’d say this was from the 70s/80s just like the vibes. def not what i thought they were. i thought it was heavy metal. i think they’re still touring and stuff so like good for them. rating: 5/10
Groovy, funky, weird, and worth it. Definitely worth listening to before you die because disco didn't last that long but it affected many genres and sub genres.
I guess ok? Will I listen to again: 4%
I get it, its fun and flamboyant. But I do think others have done this style better. Some goods songs on the album but also some dead wood that you can not get past very easily.
The bangers are undeniable, but listening to a whole album of it gets a bit old towards the end
Not really my thing
The album kinda has 2 sides. One of them is 70s and 80s glam rock revival but done with a modern twist, and that part is pretty fun, with strong melodies, quirky vocal and an effective mix of the old and the new. The disco/dance revival from the other half I could kind of take or leave, I don't think they do that style as much justice and it just sounds kinda tiresome. My thoughts were mostly positive, but I'm still a bit torn overall. Small + to the rating for the song Tits on the Radio, which reminds me of Of Montreal with it's massive grooves, colorful production and creative vocal delivery. So this rating can be treated as 3+.
I first imagined it is a lesbian sex reference. I do not know what I expected but I was very positively surprised! It had a song I was familiar with before already and I liked quite a few of them. Nice listen overall.
Laura - 3/5 Take Your Mama - 2/5 Comfortably Numb - 4/5 Mary - 4/5 Lovers in the Backseat - 3/5 Tits on the Radio - 5/5 Filthy / Gorgeous - 3/5 Music Is the Victim - 4/5 Better Luck - 3/5 It Can't Come Quickly Enough - 4/5 Return to Oz - 3/5 Average score: 3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ this was a mix bag for sure. as a typical enjoyer of gay music/musicians, i was kinda excited to get to listen to this. sadly, i didn't find as much enjoyment or appreciation for this as i thought i would the first couple tracks were a ROUGH start for my ears (the male vocalist in particular), but thankfully it got better from there, even if only a little. honestly, i think this may just be too dated for me. the bar for "good" music was pretty low in the 2000s i suppose i can see why it's so loved by some. it's very camp, and i can appreciate that
This feels like an Elton John rip off. The first thing I thought of when I turned it on. Which is cool in its own way but it's not very original.
Some good songs. Whole album is an effort.
Going in blind here * Take Your Mama: feels nice and familiar * 2004? Would not have guessed that. * Comfortably Numb: horrible * Mary: better * Filthy/Gorgeous: enjoyed * Return to oz: good album closer Well, I do t think I would come back to this. I didn’t save any songs…but it was a decent album
I've got to give the Scissor Sisters some credit - they really went for it with their debut album. This was a wide-ranging album of felt like an antidote to the homogenized pop scene we have in 2025. The Scissor Sisters wear their influences on their sleeves, jumping between a dizzying collection of genres - glam rock, disco, dance pop, and others. While this scattershot approach certainly yielded its high points, there were also plenty of misses, and by leaning so heavily into their influences, it feels like Scissor Sisters do not have an identity of their own to speak to. Two songs into this album, I thought it could be a true winner. The swaggering opening track, Laura, and especially the follow-up, Take Your Mama, immediately set a tone. I was even willing to look past the discofied Comfortably Numb that came next, which, despite its popularity, was the first sign of some of the missteps to come. As the album continued, it became clear just how much Scissor Sisters were relying on the sounds of the giants on whose shoulders they stand. While Take Your Mama is the peak of this album, it is undeniably a slightly bluesy take on Elton John. Most of the songs that followed are, generously, heavily indebted to the iconic sounds of the Bee Gees, Prince, Bowie, George Michael, and again, Elton. Those songs that are not ripping off the icons of the 70s don't show a whole lot of great taste either. Filthy/Gorgeous in particular is a song I couldn't imagine listening to outside of a club, and I wouldn't enjoy it very much in that setting either. By the time Return to Oz, a Elton John - Queensryche sort of mashup, was finished I was simply at a loss. The songs taking on the well-known styles of the greats of yesteryear were palatable enough, and Take Your Mama is worth coming back to. But if that's the case, I may as well go listen to the originals, who, despite the Scissor Sisters' best efforts, still pull it off more convincingly. And what about the band's original sound? Does it exist? And if it does, do I trust them enough to build upon it in a fruitful direction? Unfortunately, the answer is a no on both counts - all I get is a relative flair for transgression and flamboyance. The high points on this record show that Scissor Sisters have the chops to make some good music. Originality (and grounding) is the remaining question after this release, and I haven't yet decided if a couple songs is enough to make me track their progress.
I honestly don’t know what to make of this one. It’s fun, theatrical, and ridiculous in equal measure — part Elton John, part George Michael, and maybe a little too over the top for my taste. The Comfortably Numb cover was… an experience. I respect the creativity, but I’m not sure I’ll revisit it often.
Never heard of this group, my 30 yr old daughter thinks there great! I like what I hear! Good grooving music, I'll be putting this on my playlist
Catchy, but not quite my thing. I did really enjoy their cover of Comfortably Numb.
This was an... interesting album.
Other than the electronica/disco rendition of “Comfortably Numb”, which is an abomination, there’s a lot to like here. Might have been 4 stars.
The single tracks are decent enough, hold up pretty well but the album tracks are pretty much identical to the singles, and a lot of the tracks do not age particularly well. Enjoyable enough to listen to, but not a classic and starts to grate a little after the first half.
Really tough one - loved the bangers on this album as a kid, and the next album too. But that's my teenage memory, I know if I heard this today I'd hate some of the melodies and instrumentation. Slot it in as a 3, satisfying nobody.
Love the arrangement
Fun little pop album with one of my favorite songs ever. Don't know if I've ever listened to it T to B. Good stuff
Wasn’t for me
Fun glam rock album. Only song I didn’t care for was the Comfortably Numb cover, otherwise, I enjoyed the rest of the album. Humorous, sexual lyrics. Again, a fun listen.
That was quite good, heard a lot of samples used in mashups over the years. Will listen to again.
A fun, quirky, decent listen top to bottom, it just didn't actually make me want to dance
Ok. A few danceable songs. A few duds.
Pa dosta dobar album, zapravo nikad nisam slušala detaljno njihove albume i dosta me iznenadilo - za to vrijeme dosta je najs mix diska, funka i u trenucima nekog rejva. 3/5, 6.5/10
Mary and Return to Oz were my favorites but I didn't love this album.
I listened to this record several times when I was younger, 20 years ago, but nowadays It does not excite me. 3 stars
You know I would have been very surprised if any members of this group were heterosexual. Obvious standout hit + cover of comfortably numb that sorta makes me think of the zoolander brainwashing bit.
An interesting pastiche of disco presented as Glam Rock A few good tracks but not really my thing. 6/10
Half bad, half ok
Eh not my favorite but kind of fun
This is a mostly fun album. I hadn't heard of any of it except the Comfortably Numb cover, which got some play on our alternative station when it was released.
It's not bad Jake's voice is pretty good in places. Laura, Mary and Take your mother out are all good solid tracks. However that Comfortably Numb cover is dreadful I couldn't remember it being so bad. I can see they tried jazz it up and put glitter on it but geez they butchered it.
3.5
Undeniably fun, but apart from the singles, nothing all that catchy and memorable. Worth a listen though, and if you can't find a little joy in some of this then you're probably a bit dead inside.
Interesting. I liked Comfortably Numb. I love the original PF version but this was an interesting alternative.
I was never a huge scissor sister fan, I only felt they had one good song, but it was a fun little nostalgic trip to go down with this album!
Nice
This album was fun and enjoyable. It was a little pop, a little electric, a lot 80's The cover of Comfortably Numb was so different but kind of cool they put a totally different spin on it.
IDK, I was kind of expecting more from this album. I remember there one song from Just Dance and liking it, but nothing here really stood out. This just reminds me of a watered down Jamiroquai. Nothing on here is bad, but I just was expecting to have more fun with this one. Mid 3.
I am always surprised how much I enjoy the Scissor Sisters, I tend to forget about them. I was going to give this 4 stars, but the whole album at once was too much, I felt like I spend too much time in a club and wasn't drinking while surrounded by too many drunk people, so I had to drop it down to a 3.
Silly me for thinking Scissor Sisters was going to be a lesbian rock band. The music is kind of polished retro. There's a song that sounds a lot like Elton John, and then they do a Bee Gee's style cover of Comfortably Numb. It was OK. Best track: Take Your Mama
Ellers noen låter som jeg føler nesten sitter som «Tits on the Radio» og «Take Your Mama». Men hele plata bærer egentlig preg av «nesten».
Litt ujevnt, men ellers et godt album
Eclectic and bubbly. Many well known songs. Next gen Jamiroquai. A bit to bubbly for my taste.
3 sterren. FAVO: Take your mama
I got this album when it came out and quickly decided that it had a couple of good songs and a lot of filler. My opinion hasn't changed. Not bad but not my favorite either.
A very bold and fun album, or at least some of the songs. It starts with its best songs. 'Laura' is super fun, but 'Take Your Mama' is in another level with its comedic theme of taking the listeners mother to party all night. From this point forward, the record doesn't manage to reach the highs of the first two songs. The closest ones would be 'Tits On the Radio' and 'Filthy/Gorgeous', specially the last one with its incredibly catchy chorus. The rest of the tracks are a bit of a mixed bag. You have the pink floyd cover, which I didn't like; you have the mellow 'Mary', that I also didn't appreciate; the ending being a slow song but not as bad as the others: and finalmy, the ones I didn't mention are the pop tracks that don't have the same impact as the big songs. Overall, this was an interesting listening, and I did like the attitude and the falsetto of the singer.
A pegada disco anos 70 é forte. 3.5/5
Starts out jaunty and fun but it does carry on for quite a long time.
Sort of a fun album
The middle of the order hits like the 2000s yankees
2.7 1x a few decent tracks but nothing stood out
Interesting name for a band...not a bad listen overall.
Scissor Sisters sounds a little gayish. And a few of their songs do, too - especially Filthy/Gorgeous. Got some dance beat, disco-electronica going on with Comfortably Numb and F/G. Off beat song ideas and clever lyrics throughout. L = (2.7*s) How come I’ve never heard of this band? J =(3.3*s) Bit of a BG’s vibe.
What the hell is this? I'm wanting to shove this aside but the Scissor Sisters kinda got me with their debut release. Take Elton, Robbie Williams, Beck, Soft Cell, ABBA, T. Rex, and George Michaels...throw em in a cement mixer and you get this. Their sound is a blend of disco, electronica, funk, glam, and rock. It should be chalked up as bad but somehow it works. Other than the deplorable hit single cover of "Comfortably Numb," the album is a good-weird, engaging mix. Album picks up steam from "Lovers in the Backseat" on. "Tits on the Radio"...need I say more? The fact this won Gay Album of the year is on point. The Sisters are scissoring in at 3.14 stars with this one.
I've heard a couple Scissor Sisters songs in the past and always enjoyed them. It turns out their debut album is pretty solid and a lot of fun. It's like the upbeat parts of Elton John were mixed with some 2000's electro-pop. I'm not high on the Comfortably Numb cover, but the rest of the album offered some good dance tunes. I ended up digging this album more than I expected to. 3.26 stars
It's okay. Some songs are bangers, some are meh meh.
The first four tracks are stonkers and set the tone for a rollicking good time, but the quality does dip after that. The rest of the album is still a good time, but one you probably won’t remember for too long once its over.
Was not expecting this and never listened to it in its entirety. Let’s see… Reading through the track listing quite a lot of hits for one album. Hard to listen afresh and just have the familiarity of hearing it all over in the noughties. But generally, consistent feel good music. Nice to hear the old familiars but after that a kind of nice enough listen but nothing I’d probably go back to by choice (3.5)
Pas mauvais mais pas bon non plus. George Michael de Temu. 2.5 étoiles
This album feels like it dipped between a lot of genres. Some like dance pop, some indie rock, some shit that sounded like knockoff Elton John. Just kind of all over. A good time, but I won't come back to it
A lot of fun. A bit too dance-y for me to really get into it, but I'd get some Scissor Sisters on any time.
Surprisingly good!
Love their version of Take Your Mama since a long time. Didn't know anything else from the album. And I don't really like the other stuff. Parts are ok (e.g. Laura, Music Is The Victim) but others I find rather boring. As a whole, the album is ok but not more.
weirdly loved that floyd cover especially the chorus bits, that synth is fantastic. fun album
It starts with everything it has. Then it’s a string of hits and misses.
The Good: We know two women are having a good time! The Bad: The good times don’t last forever… The Ugly: Per always, an self-named album… I am tired, because it is hot here, and we are in the middle of summer, and no a/c… So, my review is going to be simple, and short. Actually enjoyed it more than I thought I was going to… however, a disco cover of Comfortably Numb is herecy… 3*
I couldn't completely latch onto the Bee Gees rendition of Pink Floyd, but I found some redeeming qualities to this one. I can get with the deep grooves on tracks like Tits On The Radio or Music Is The Victim. In a way, it feels like a compilation of Elton John B-sides, which I'm not upset about.
Fun solid album with a few duds. Would be a 4 but the comfortably numb cover knocks it to a 3
Okay. I know I've said this a number of times by now with other albums, but I have a strong feeling that this will be the FINAL time that I say this. This is, without a single doubt in my mind, the gayest album I have ever listened to. I may have said this in the past about Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Pet Shop Boys and whatever else I said, but those have been eclipsed. I mean, the band is literally called Scissor Sisters! Once again, I must stress that I am saying this endearingly. This is a compliment in my eyes. Let's get serious about this now. There is a serious basis for this title I've given the album that is rooted in good places. For one, the lyrical themes of the album call to mind the gay nightclub scene of New York City. This is most obvious on the song "Take Your Mama" which I happened to enjoy quite a bit. The writing, by the way, is solid. It has the exact vibe I was looking for, that being fun and a little campy, but also engaging. The musical elements of the album are also quite good. It's kind of hard to pinpoint exactly which genre this album fits in, which is respectable. I'm also noticing a bit of influence from other notable queer musicians, including Elton John and George Michael. The vocal style gave me those Elton John vibes and the aforementioned "Take Your Mama" kind of reminds me of George Michael's "Freedom! '90." But there is one other famous musical act that I need to acknowledge in regards to this review. That, of course, is Pink Floyd. I have to talk about this "Comfortably Numb" cover, okay? Though, to be honest, I don't know what to say. As soon as I started the album, I anxiously waited for the cover to start because I knew that, regardless of quality, it would be something special. This is definitely one of the more interesting song covers I've heard in my life. It's very funny. I don't know if I can call it good or bad. I can see why people would hate this, but apparently David Gilmour liked it, so it's got that going for it. Overall, this is definitely a unique album within the project. It's got a unique feel to it that makes it a standout on the list. It's got some very fun elements for sure, but I also can't say that I myself 100% vibe with the album. It's good, but not entirely for me. It's not the kind of thing I could listen to forever, but I'm also glad that I listened to it once. Solid 3/5.
A few hits in here.
3.2/cue the bad jokes. glad we're past this era of pop
