Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Tits On The Radio is the jam from this album. I also enjoyed the Pink Floyd cover as well. My memory of the Scissor Sisters has them as more electro/dance than this but it does not matter what a treat as a freshman album.

What an interesting album. I expected an 80's pop thing like the Pointer Sisters, but I am pleasantly surprised by this. "Laura" is a great song. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot.

I'm... still not sure how I feel about this rendition of Comfortable Numb. Plus, the album doesn't feel as cohesive as it could be, but it's not bad, but yeah, it's plenty fruity.

this album is really gay!

I thought this was great when it came out, and it’s still pretty solid although it hasn’t aged wonderfully. Even if they had not done a not-terrible cover of Comfortably Numb you would be able to smell the Gilmour influence all over this - the guitar tone on especially Return to Oz is pure prime Gilmour, and I’m here for that. About as flash-in-the-pan as it is possible to be, but a pretty good album.

This is one of the gayest albums ever, and I say that with all of the love and admiration. I mean, Attitude magazine named it the top gay album of all time in 2006. I am not gay or queer in any sense, just a regular ol' neurodivergent cis guy who experiences queer joy vicariously via his queer friends. I discovered this record at the downtown Virgin Records in Denver (RIP). I clearly remember hearing “Take Your Momma” for the first time. It’s such a fun song with its bouncy acoustic guitar opening and the honkytonk piano. When the chorus kicks in, all you want to do is shake your ass. “Comfortably Numb” becomes a disco anthem at the hands of the Scissor Sisters. I don’t know if another band could transform a song in that way and make it work. These songs made something click, and I just got my queer friends on a level I hadn’t before. Other standouts for me are album opener “Laura”, “Tits on the Radio”, “Better Luck Next Time”, and “It Can’t Come Quickly Enough”.

This was funkier than i remember. Very poppy but solid and can see why it was a big hit album. Plenty of songs easily recognisable.

Was pretty cool to hear music in rural Montana that was so unabashedly queer in the 2000s. I liked this album then and I like it now.

Inspired by the dazzling worlds of glam and drag, Scissor Sisters put on a show of their own with infectiously jubilant dance-pop worthy of its theatrical heritage.

This was fun and interesting. Liked it more than i thought i would and was engaged more than i expected to be. Wasnt too hot on the comfortably numb cover, but i wonder if i wouldve liked it if i didnt know the original. Might not listen again but i appreciated it

Classic 00s album. So different to anything I had heard at the time when it released.

What an incredible debut, some brave and unusual choices (especially for 2004!) and had not realised so many of their iconic singles were from their debut. Almost a 5 but felt the album tracks weren't quite as strong. Great collective though.

Me gustó, bastante entretenidos de escuchar y transmiten buena vibes

Is this a revolutionary album, a wholly original sound never heard before, not to be missed? No. Is it fun? Yes!

I liked this more than I thought I'd do (I don't feel like dancing was the most overplayed piece of music on my childhood radio station). That's it!

To put 100% facts first: Scissor Sisters were an absolute out loud and proud queer celebration in the early 2000s, before being queer was more widely accepted. They were out there unapologetically creating queer music for queer people. They did that. As for the type of music Scissor Sisters was creating, that too was unique to the times. Disco and glam were not really at the forefront of mainstream music in the early 2000s. Scissor Sisters were steering that resurrection. And notice how glam and disco are popular in music again. They also did that. Scissor Sisters will long be remembered as part of the movement to make space for queer people. And they do so, again, in a fun and celebratory way. We are fortunate to have this fun, campy, dramatic, disco-y, glam institute of an album.

03/06/2025 I actually enjoy a couple of these songs anyway. Good album.

Great album and also one of the best covers so far in my opinion. Serious tunes like take your mama and filthy and good vibe of the others. Not too much into the slower songs like Mary and really dislikes the audio jump scare they had in there. Why do you have to do that. Specific rating- 4.4 Fav song- filthy/ gorgeous Least fav- Mary

The songs where they tried to be upbeat Great Value Prince were great, the other ones were not.

Ok filthy/gorgeous is a BANGER!!!! Why can't lesbians like this kind of music?

I had never heard of this band or album before - enjoyed listening to it. Definitely ahead of their time. My favorite track was "Take Your Mama"

4 - really fun upbeat album, but what was that comfortably numb cover

Was dying on my bike while listening to this, but I think I enjoyed the music.

Excellent! Had not heard this before, but it was really good. Will be listening.

Forgot how much I like this album. Tons of fun.

Yeah, America definitely isn't gay enough, culturally, to appreciate this. The album itself introduces itself pretty tamely, but then with every song you get to know it a little better, and you see a few more of its quirks and it gets less shy with its weirdness. And it's beautiful. So, the first half-ish of the album is just warming you up for what's the album really wants to be. And then the album peaks with its weird/oddness in the middle and tones down at the end. Which is also the flow of the quality of the songs; the ending doesn't really hold a candle to the beginning/middle of the album. That said, this is really good. Vibey. The singing is excellent. And even some really great musical moments that surprised me. It's a shame this album never really did as well in the US as it did in Europe. Favorite Song(s): Take Your Mama, Lovers in the Backseat

Overraskende bra!

This has made me realise I am literally always pleased to hear the scissor sisters; in the shop, out for food, in The Club, at a party, in a taxi. Queer people make the best pop and I would go to war to defend this belief. Lots of songs I didn’t know already that I really liked along with the famous bangers. Filthy/Gorgeous is like being hit by a bus (positive).

I miss 2004

Never heard this before, but I’m super pleasantly surprised. What an awesome mix of nostalgic nods to early superstars like Elton John, Bowie, Bee Gees, etc. I mean c’mon, a Bee Gees inspired retake of Comfortably Numb? Genius madness.

Super fun

Happy Pride Month! I had this CD when it came out and I still had to come out! Take Your Mama is timeless.

Andskoti hresst.

Big nostalgia hit. Driving to pick up Elliott from daycare

De kan alltså

This one came out of nowhere for me....never heard of them, or thought I hadn't. Great album. "Best Gay Album of all time" in 2006....I can see it.

Britney Spears/Max Martin, George Michael, Survivor (Eye of the Tiger), Queen...

Very nice album.

Fun in 2004 and still fun today. What a wild range: pop, disco, glam rock, prog...

It’s fine

Never actually heard before although I knew a lot of the songs. Really enjoyable.

genuinely pleasantly surprised, favourite was definitely "mary". first time a song from one of these album has actually been put on my playlist, yippeeeee!!!

B+ Laura 5 Take Your Mama 5 Comfortably Numb 3 Mary 5 Lovers In The Backseat 3 T**s On The Radio 4 Filthy/Gorgeous 3 Music Is The Victim 3 Better Luck Next Time 3 It Can't Come Quickly Enough 4 Return to Oz 5 This album holds a special place in my heart. Mary is my favorite.

Wtf was that comfortably numb cover

It’s a fun romp of an album. Put it on on a sunny day and it’s hard to beat.

Ok well that was much more enjoyable than expected

Didn't expect to like it as much as I did!

You know, I’m not sure I had to listen to this before keeling over, however it’s campy fun, upbeat and joyful, and what is not to love about that? I don’t even dislike the Comfortably Numb cover, it’s so different it works

Not in my edition of the book! 2004. 4 stars. Quality camp rock, with some brilliantly catchy songs and sharp lyrics. The opening four song sequence is brilliant. Point deducted for filler.

I prefer Magic Hour, but this is still a great album.

Pop music that swaggers and smiles.

sassy and fun. 4 stars, partially for being queer.

Lovely, flamboyant and fun - the disco tracks are killer - the ballads tasteful and they actually managed to make me like their version of comfortably numb - probably one of the top songs I dislike. Enjoyed this one.

Would have gotten 5 stars if it wasn't for that horrendous Pink Floyd cover. The world didn't and doesn't need a disco version of Comfortably Numb.

Super gay

*Like it

Interesting listen, didn’t know they were from 2003

Somebody was having a lot of fun making this album. I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Their version of "Comfortably Numb" is so outrageously campy that I can't tell whether it is brilliant or awful.

OK, it's pretty good. There's no way I could listen to it all the time, but it's pretty cool how it melds genres. I'm not a big glam guy, and that's really what this is at its heart, but it weaves in aspects of rock, pop, and electronica to great effect. I have to say, though, that Comfortably Numb is comfortably the worst song on the album. Covers are always tricky, because people who love the original will obviously compare the two versions, so if you try to sound *exactly* like the original band, you're probably going to fail, and if you try to put your own spin on it you'll be accused of butchering it. Scissor Sisters took the latter approach and, well, they butchered it. Frankly, even if you don't compare it to the original, it's just kind of a shit song. On the other hand, Filthy/Gorgeous might be the best song. Overall, this album is fun as hell. It'll have you tapping your toes and nodding your head and bopping around the office and, really, isn't that what music's all about?

A neon-lit cabaret act that takes itself just seriously enough to sell it. It’s dramatic, indulgent, and unafraid to go full Broadway when the moment calls for it. The hooks are undeniable, the energy is relentless, and the whole thing feels like it should be played in a club where the drinks are overpriced but the vibes are immaculate. Not an everyday listen, but when it hits, it hits. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Laura - Take Your Mama - Filthy/Gorgeous

Fun, funky and humming with a vibrant sexual energy. The style feels equal parts Bee Gees, Bowie and George Michael. I could totally see myself spending more time with this one. The cover of “Comfortably Numb” is incredible. I can’t remember the last time I heard a cover so completely transform a song. They turned it into a Bee Gees song! And it works!

Definitely a wild and interesting one. Dancey poppy glam, more or less. I'll give it the 4 since I certainly wasn't bored lol

Rather liked this.

Really good. Better than expected. Reminds me of Justin Timberlake.

1st time I learned of the Scissor Sisters I was aghast at their idea of a discofied "Comfortably Numb" 2nd time was when their song "I Can't Decide" was used to great effect in Doctor Who. 3rd time was when I found out they were on this list! (*Were*- they were expunged from later editions) Sorry younger me, "Comfortably Numb" goes hard, & we still have the original. Although hearing the 'ahh-ha-ha' Bee Gees pastiche makes the lack of disco Bee Gees on this list (Saturday Night Fever/Spirits Having Flown) even more beguiling That bassline in "Filthy/Gorgeous" sounds like the sewers in Super Mario Bros. IN A GOOD WAY The last two songs make for a surprisingly morose ending. HL: the Pink Floyd cover, "Mary", "Filthy/Gorgeous", "It Can't Come Quickly Enough" February 11, 2025

It's a very joyous, and fun glam/disco album and it gets a 4 from me because of it. I recognised some of the hits songs from it. The early 2000s wasn't a great period in music, so albums like this stand out from the others.

I didn’t know this existed and it was pretty fun. I call that a win

Only knew Take Your Mama so this album was a welcome surprise! Will be back.

Wish there were half stars for this because thus is a 3.5

I was wondering how this might stand up. At the time it was a really fun record with some really inescapable big singles. Bee Gees, Elton, euro disco all mixed up on the dancefloor of a nightclub you'll remember forever but forget where the hell it was. Listening today I was surprised how powerful the finish of the album was. it Can't Come Quickly enough is stunning. Actually played it twice in a row. Return To Oz too. What seemed like a mashup homage/pastiche at the time revealed itself to be a bit of a classic

Point off for Comfortably Numb. Travesty.

Take Your Mama has always been a favorite. This whole album just wants to have fun.

Kinda dig it. Witty, clever, good songs. Not great, but I'd listen again and to there other stuff as well.

A new to me band that I will be adding into rotation

So entertainingly weird! Not my first exposure to the Scissor Sisters, but my first full album. First listen I thought the ‘Comfortably Numb’ cover was awful but second listen seemed a bit better. 3.5/5

Not too bad. The album starts strong but falters a little as it goes on The cover of "Comfortably numb" is a capital crime! All in all, quite a pleasant surprise

Great overall. Take Your Mama is the hit I remember.

Nota: 4.0

Every other song is a banger. Every other song is skipable. I don't really know what to do with this album; I love half of it, and half of it is a snooze fest. By the end, I think the great songs make up for the bland ones.

I had never heard of this band and had no idea what to expect. The album was entertaining--large swaths of a more edgy mid- to late-70s The Eagles and Little River Band sound, homages to Disco, and early 80s funk. A pleasant surprise and satisfying listen.

Laura er en fed åbner. Skæv og anderledes. Meget dragende. George Michael vipes over take your mama. Også noget Robie Williams her. 😁

Still fun and uplifting.

I only knew this band by their 2 radio hits (Take Your Mama and I Don't Feel Like Dancin) going in, so this album really subverted my expectations. There's a wide array of styles and genres on display. Doing a dance/disco cover of Comfortably Numb seemed an odd choice, until you get to the end with Return To Oz which has a distinct Pink Floyd vibe, which puts it into perspective. Subsequent listens were spent searching for what else I missed the first time. I was expecting this to be a fun but fluff album, but it turned into an enjoyable and interesting listen. I also really like the album cover. It's a great concept even if the photoshop work could have been better.

7/10 Very good album that didn’t blow me away. Glam pop with heavy disco and Elton John influences Really fun, nicely put together. Great vibes. Who would have thought that taking the guitar solos out of Comfortably Numb would make it much more palatable (me) Best: Filthy/Gorgeous

I enjoyed that album, some really strong tracks but not enough to get a 4 for me. 3.5, but let's round to 4!

Laura is such a good pop song. That ending with the sax and the backing vocals is so good Take Your Mama is great too. Filthy Gorgeous sucks so much Comfortably Numb isn't as good as the original, but its still good and I like what they did with it Four of the singles are excellent, so it's up to the album tracks to hold up their end. Tits on the Radio, despite the name, is a good tune with a decent chorus Better luck next time - decent It's a 4

This album is incredibly fun. Alongside Electric Six's debut album, it combined disco, dance, and rock during a time when much of the music was depressingly bad. Now this album is no 5* album by any account, there's just too many songs on here that don't hold up at all, and didn't even do on my first listen back in 2004. But Laura, Take Your Mama Out Tonight, Tits On The Radio and Filthy/Gorgeous are still songs I play when I'm DJ'ing somewhere and will still fill any dancefloor, regardless of age groups.

The music is tight, zippy, funky, cocksure and enjoyable. Loved it.

Lots of fun songs! Sounds like they were heavily influenced by Elton John and Boy George.

What an odd, eclectic album. Feels like they tried a different genre for each song. Folk, rock, pop, it’s all here. Even a disco cover of Comfortably Numb. Not bad for sure, all the music was good, but I definitely need to give this one a relisten.

What a bizarre cover of comfortably numb.

7/10 - Ok I thought for sure this would have a female singer was not expecting a man. I was very wrong it seems. A lot of these songs were quite strange. A lot of songs had parts I really enjoyed but also a lot of parts I did not enjoy. I think I have heard comfortably numb before. I liked parts of Filthy/Gorgeous a lot but then other parts I very much did not enjoy. I think if I listened to this album more I would like it more. I might give it a relisten as I think the parts I do not like could grow on me. I liked Get it Get it a lot the whole way through.

I’ve loved Take Your Mama for many years but had never listened to this full album. Really enjoyed the whole thing, especially Mary and Music is the Victim.

This was great. I’d forgotten they had as many good tracks as the first half of the album did. Plus, a cool Pink Floyd cover. Not quite a 5 because the last few tracks drop off of quality.

I didn’t really know what to expect and liked this more than I anticipated. “Glam rock” conjures some bands that aren’t my favorite. But maybe now this band is my favorite glam rock band?

This was some refreshingly fun disco music. Especially their cover of Comfortably Numb was incredible. Stand-out: Take Your Mama

The Scissor Sisters, much like The Killers, are an American band that just feel British for some reason. Despite their accents, they still feel British to me. Anyway, this album was absolutely huge on release here in the UK, and I found myself recognising a lot on here. If I remember rightly, there seemed to be a surge of new disco records at this time and Scissor Sisters fit right in with this, giving us very catchy melodies and memorable lyrics all around. I really enjoyed this album.

holds up soooo well

Really fun, if contrived.

Whenever I get a band I've never heard of before, I feel like this project serves up one of two possibilities: an eye-opening sample of a band or person that may not appeal to me, but seems very worthy of inclusion; or some incredibly bland or derivative or otherwise uninteresting 30-60 minutes. Today the book served up the former, for which I'm grateful. I'm not sure I'd necessarily listen to more of their music, but I really enjoyed Scissor Sisters' sound and attitude and music selection on their debut album. I'll admit I had very high hopes for their version of "Comfortably Numb", and wasn't exactly rewarded by my hopes, but I have to say it's easily the best disco version of Pink Floyd I'll probably ever hear. And I really enjoyed the energy throughout the album, with a lot of Elton John vibes at times (especially in "Laura" and "Mary"); the video for "Take your mama" is kind of dated-looking in a way but still has a fun energy to it (Jake Shears is quite a dancer). I particularly liked "Tits on the radio" and "Music is the Victim" (and also the somewhat jarringly downer "Return to Oz"). I also just liked how strangely eclectic this album is, and how they somehow managed to avoid seeming like a novelty act yet are clearly having fun hamming it up. I'm not sure it quite deserves 4 stars, but they get a bonus for just being unexpected.

Great album which I'm embarrassed to say was new to me, though I'd heard of this band before. Comfortably Numb was esp terrific--the first 6 songs are all especially good. Didn't like the sort of fuzzy quality to the recording--I switched headphones to make sure it wasn't me--but this is great pop.

2004. Take Your Mama

fun enough album. not anything bad on here, but not anything super stellar either. the highlight for me was 'take your mama' which is a fun elton john style romp. the rest of it was alright, but did not elevate to the level of a favorite.

Light hearted pop that is fun and perfect for the dance floor

I enjoyed this massively. It's camp and silly pop.

I've always likes Take Your Mama, but I wasn't expecting the Scissor Sisters' debut to be so diverse, catchy, and fun! That Comfortably Numb cover is wild. 3.5/5

Fun listen!

This takes me back. The first four songs where on so many mixtapes I made back in the early 2000s. I really enjoyed hearing Filthy/Gorgeous, I've not heard that in almost 2 decades. The first time I heard Comfortably Numb was on this album, so I was very surprised to hear it was actually a cover song.

This is really enjoyable even past the hit singles.

I had a lot of fun with this! Shiny, campy, unapologetic disco pop—although I don’t get the hype over the Comfortably Numb cover.

This is a fun album from a really shitty period for rock music. Glam rock seems to always deliver on this list 4/5

Mary is an all time song

Finally, some good fucking gay ass music. I loved it.

When this came out, one just couldn't dislike the catchy songs. It was a right blast giving this a spin again 20 years later. I enjoyed it so much I stuck Ta Dah on after it. I do think the weakest track is their cover of 'Comfortably Numb'. Due to not listening to it regularly enough, it's a 4.

Based on the group name, I felt duped when I heard a dude start singing lol. Besides that, I honestly thought this was a fun album for the most part. I think the first half of the album is by far superior to the second half. It’s got a good mix of some disco, pop, and rock. I wish the female co-lead singer had more presence than the guy, but it is what it is. A solid 3.5

symppikset omg.. niin isoja symmppiksiä <33333333. ja partas bink band coveri ikinäääääää... and i am... dundundun---. comftobalu numb... teki oikeasti biisistä paremman alkuperäinen on niin saatanan roguh waduhs kuravettä .. kuunnelkaapas mielummin: its a goood daayy,, for hitchicking!!! this is the story..... of...... htcthiking!!!!!!!!!!! Plastic and fake. Sounds like music for people who were scared of all the new genres popping up in the early 2000s (ooo numetal so scary) so they clung to the one band that sounds like it crawled out of the 80s, complete with a (horrible) cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". The future is now, old man. My Chemical Romance Halo 2 Nacho chip, motherfucker. (ooo numetal so scary) ehkä uusi paskin review löydetty. teloittakaa kiitos. filthy/gorgeous

Great album, until I've listened to Comfortably Numb cover. Pros - they have a distinct style and they went all the way to ahow it with their rendition of the song. Cons - they really went all the way. Other than that, few great moments, entertaining album, really cool stuff.

Listening to this album was bittersweet for me, but I’m glad I revisited it. Back when it first came out, I was in a dark period of my life, and this album was one of my favorites at the time. It brings back memories of that era, which is why I’ve avoided it for a while. Musically, though, it’s a fun and playful mix of electroclash, indie pop, disco, and 70s glam rock. It has an upbeat vibe that made it an enjoyable escape during tough times.

Hey this was pretty good! For 2004 I would've thought this was more 80s or something. That capture that funky 80s Brit pop really well. Music was diverse enough to keep engaging. Props

somewhere between glam rock and disco, this was an energetic album. their sound is strongly influenced by the bee gees, elton john, and the pet shop boys. just an all around excellent listening experience and i can only imagine how fantastic their live show must be. highlights: “comfortably numb” “tits on the radio” “filthy/gorgeous” “it can’t come quickly enough”

I had never listened to them but I heard that they were pretty good. Yep. That was pretty fun.

A surprise cross-country hit, Scissor Sisters' debut album swaggers, sizzles and sways with the utmost confidence. Queer pop has always had its roads, whether discreet or otherwise, and this record is just another path taken in order to get to where the future needed to go. Favorites: Laura, Take Your Mama, Comfortably Numb, Mary, Lovers in the Backseat, Tits on the Radio, Better Luck Next Time.

So much fun.

Album 528 of 1001 Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters (2004) Rating : 3.75 / 5 I like when something I've never heard of comes along and turns out to be a nice listen. I enjoy this. Classified as Rock / Electronica. I'll ignore the Electronica part and plan to listen again.

Very good rock album! I would like to highlight the great mix of classic rock n' roll with House Music and the good songs: Take Your Mama, Tits On The Radio, Filthy/Gorgeous and the interesting cover of Comfortably Numb.

I actually really enjoyed this. I love over-the-top glam, and this is over-the-top as it gets. They're not virtuosos, but they're fast, fun, exciting, and totally uninhibited. That's what rock's all about. And they've actually got some chops. They have two competent lead singers with very distinct voices, and they use that versatility - that's always nice. They have big choruses with a lot of backing vocals. They've got a pretty varied sound palette (can do piano-forward, or conventional rock, or more electronic). And they use a couple of fun tricks on this one. The stray minor chord on "Mary" is clever. A lot of the color they inject is really nice. Just a good CD.

More sensual (for lack of a better word at the moment) sounding than I ever realized from them. It's got a little bit of a groovy funk to it.

A great freaky surprise in middle 2Ks

My wife loves Scissor Sisters. She listened with me. We agreed we needed some fun drugs and a dance floor.

This was a really fun album, and I'm glad it was on this list. Take Your Mama took me back, and Filthy/Gorgeous was a great listen. I remember listening to their version of Comfortably Numb when I was going through a The Wall phase in 2008 or so. All in all a pretty solid album with just a handful of underwhelming tracks. 4/5

A couple of bum tracks, but mostly a fun listen

First time listening to this album, bizarre but intriguing. Could hear some influences from The Bee Gees and Wham. Undecided about the cover of the iconic “Comfortably Numb” but have to give some credit for remaking it into a completely different vibe.

very good

Great album. I have always liked the jaunty and fun music SS puts out. You can’t help tapping your feet when listening. Great stuff.

I heard ABBA, Moby, Elton John, and of course, disco-era Bee Gees. Somehow the mashup felt less Frankenstein and more symphonic than I would’ve expected. I’ve got a new favourite!

i’ve been a scissor sisters fan for a long time but never got around to listening to any albums all the way through. some just okay songs but also some great ones (take your mama, return to oz). plus one of the coolest/weirdest pink floyd covers of all time

Lots of big, fun, gay party hits. 7/10

This album has a nice selection of upbeat songs and soft songs. Liked songs: Laura, Take Your Mama, Mary, Filthy/Gorgeous

Laura is an interesting choice out of the gate. Sets the tone for a theatrical, campy, indie-glam record. The vocals have an odd similarity to TV on the Radio, with quirky instrumentation choices... Works surprisingly well all put together. Take Your Mama is a familiar one -- definitely got some radio play. The guitar intro and vibe are very similar to Lorde's more recent Solar Power. Fun little ditty. Have to say that an electro-pop cover of Comfortably Numb was not on my bingo card for today. Guitar plucking reminds me a lot of The XX. This is goofy as fuck and I'm extremely conflicted -- I enjoy the instrumental, but find the vocals to be completely distracting. The groove outweighs the bad here IMO. Tits On the Radio and Filthy/Gorgeous are both fantastic funk-rock. The former is extremely catchy and the latter pulls in some Detroit techno influences (e.g., Moodyman) that make it real stanky. Music is the Victim calls back to a simpler time with a straightforward classic rock structure that reminds me of Elton John. This was a rare album that was both quirky and fully enjoyable. I often struggle with albums that feel overly theatrical in tone, but the band here presented a broad variety with strong songwriting start to finish. Not always my cup of tea, but certainly enjoyable. 4 / 5.

Liked the singers voice for the most part. Interesting album that felt like a melting pot of a lot of sounds. I hear some disco, punk, rock n' roll, alternative, folk. Overall this lands at a 3.5.

Really digging this a couple songs in. Like a modern Elton John. Was so confused when heard the lyrics to Comfortably Numb. Doesn’t hold a candle to the original but I still like it. Has that 70s soul vocals. I still can’t get the Elton John sounds out of my head. Not bad in any way I just keep hearing it. Also some MGMT here and there. So weirdly beautiful.

I’m convinced anyone who rates this lower then a three is incapable of just having fun lol

Nice. Even tho my boyfriend was cringing at the pink floyd cover, i liked it. Liked the whole album. "Take your mama" and "Laura" are timeless hits 💥🎶. Will listen again.

This band has a really fun sound. As other reviewers have noted, I remember how different this sound was in the landscape of pop in 2004. Maybe doesn't sound that remarkable today, but it was a breath of fresh, and fun, air in its day.

Now THIS was my jam back in high school. I have distinct memories of driving around in the Bangin Bonneville and pumping this album. Although listening to it now I probably was only pumping a couple of songs but still… they’re good songs!

Yeah it's a Elton/Beegees/Disco pastiche but it's bloody gorgeous/sexy/hit laden.

Enjoyed that a lot more than I expected to.

The right kind of weird for my taste

The first three tracks kill it, especially the cover of "Comfortably Numb."

never heard of this group before. Never listened to them. But this was great. I loved this album.

Really grew on me as the album went on. Planning on exploring some of their other music.

Suprise hit! Hell yeah

If you ever wanted to know what the Bee Gees would sound like covering "Comfortably Numb," then you now have that answer. I can't decide if they were intentionally trying to reference Frankie Goes to Hollywood and the Bee Gees but it feels to me like they had to know what they were doing. I guess this is Glam Rock, though it may be the more modern version of Glam Rock which tends to edge more towards electronica. Like most humans, I knew Take Your Mama but I also must confess I did not know this was the Scissor Sisters and also did not know this band contained mostly men (at least at the time of this recording). Return to Oz is a really great closing track and I sort of wish they had done another song or two like that. Take Your Mama could have come off a mid-70's Elton John album. There is some filler here (I'm looking at you Lovers in the Backseat) but overall this is a really fun and really good album. I am glad this ended up on the list of albums I must hear, as it grooved a lot harder than I had expected.

It's a good record, plus it has Take Your Mama on it, so it's got that going for it.

Several terrific cuts (including both the opener and closer) amidst considerable (and quite fun) silliness. "Take Your Mama" and "Tits on the Radio" work well. The Pink Floyd cover is a hoot – sort of shows how it's done, even if it may feel blasphemy to overserious Pink Floyd fans. Beyond all the creativity on display, the amalgaminess of the sounds – mixing glam, disco with Laurel Canyon, all within a '70ish-decadence – makes it a plus experience overall and a gay album that even the narrowest straights can enjoy. Did not deserve to be exed, in one's view.

Glam rock, nu-disco. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Everything in my music history says I shouldn't have liked this album, but it was just so much fun!

So fun

New to me and fun. I’ll be skipping the attempted cover of “Comfortably Numb” though.

This was a really fun listen. I don't think every song connected with me but I could feel the energy and passion behind every second. There's something to be said for being unapologetically yourself, and I feel this album is a great embodiment of that. Top tracks: Take Your Mama, Tits on the Radio, Filthy/Gorgeous

Weirdly good

My main issue with this was that it was a bit one note. Apart from the times it gets a bit Elton John. But it's a fun note, doing this list you learn to appreciate a good pop hit, and there are a few here.

it is teh good

First listen to these. Not bad...

This is a fun album. I really enjoyed the blend of the different genres and styles. The upbeat, dance songs were fun and put me in a good mood. The lyrics were wild, but in a fun way.

Very jazzy and groovy, with a mix of upbeat and downtempo songs. I was interested the whole time. Comfortably Numb cover was unexpected. Return To Oz, Tits On The Radio, The Skins, Take Your Mama, there wasn't a song I didn't like on this album, or those I did came and went quick enough that I wasn't bothered. Would listen again!

Elton John, but, somehow, make it even gayer?! And I have to say, yasss qweens, this little queer loves to see it!! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 (Also, I learned that I spent my whole life mixing up Scissor Sisters with Dresden Dolls, and avoided this band like the plague as a result growing up, and I hate myself for that!)

Unexpectedly pretty awesome. And somehow, not British.

A fun, good vibes album. Weird to see something called a "gay album." I get excited when anything not from the 60s-80s pops up on here. Mary feels like a more modern Elton John song. 4* Highlights: take your mama

First half is amazing, second half less so.

I really liked this. It was a good follow up to Chic yesterday. I think I ranked this 4 stars and Chic 3 stars because of setting and track length. They both have similar poppy, dance energy, but Chic's songs were 8 minutes long and meant for a real dance floor. Scissor Sisters had shorter more radio oriented songs which was more my speed. I will definitely be listening to this again. Only track I didn't like was their take on Comfortably Numb. Album Cover: A-

Mood: Chillin Setting: Around the house I actually really enjoyed this band's sound. None of the songs stood out super well for me but I was really digging it.

This album is all over the place. I like it a lot. This is the first album on the list that I think I used to listen to? It's coming back to me as a distant memory. Even the album cover is familiar. I think I liked this album a lot in 2005 and then completely forgot it existed. I really liked general energy. The opening songs were awesome. Take Your Mama was my favorite. The comfortably numb cover was interesting, and I was surprised to learn that was their 'hit'. I added a few songs to playlists, I'll revisit and think fondly of this album. 7/10

One recalls trying and failiing to get into this act in original days, but finds it pretty fun and relatable, with vaguely sincere-seeming '70s folk-rock vibes, (feels Fr. John Misty at times, with notes of Boz Skaggs and Elton John. One also hears more disco and bubble-gum pop than glam, but the overlaps feel mostly energizing. "Laura" and "Take Your Mama" are awfully strong openers. Then there's the disco version of "Comfortably Numb," which feels sacrelige, though one gets while listeners with less serious and refined tastes might like it. "You can't see tits on the radio" nearly makes up for that particlar blaspheming. "Mary" works on its own terms and so do "Better Luck" and "Can't Come Quickly Enough." The sillier cuts feel mostly, well, silly, so perhaps they work, but are less interesting. Clearly they were out to do their own thing and did it mostly well and pleasingly, though obviously it was never going to last too terribly long, embracing disco so unabashedly and leaning so hard into AutoTune [see "Filthy/Gorgeous"] made that inevitable. Still, there's enough musicality and bouncing good playing in between the more obvious "look at us/aren't we clever" moments. Not sure just how gay this is, but if that's what it takes to be fun and frolicsome then by all means so be it.

Catchy and fun - in a really good way. Even their remake of a song considered untouchable, Comfortably Numb, is surprisingly good. 4.25/5

I like it. Less cheesy than I thought they were. may end up adding it to my regular rotation. Comfortably Numb is different enough to not sound like a straight up cover of it.

Outstanding

I imagined a whole album of Scissor Sisters songs would be a little tiresome and stuffed with filler, but it wasn't.

I know of this band because I’ve listened to one of their songs before. Even though this album sounded a lot different from that one song, I really enjoyed listening. I could easily say I liked all of the tracks but Music is the Victim stood out the most to me. I will listen again!

A lot of fun.

Very listenable- can’t say I am the biggest fan of their interpretation of Pink Floyd but overall, solid cuts on the album.

Very good

Blends genres in a fascinating way (Disco and rock).

Take Your Mama Filthy/Gorgeous

Catchy and fun

A great surprised , amazing version of Confortably Numb , Soo Nice groove

I got this album from the library when I was 13, because I liked "Take Your Mama". I, sheltered as hell, did not pick up on any of the queer subtext until later. Impressive that I didn't, but I was extremely naive. Probably still am. Anyway, I appreciate any album that goes for it, in a way. Attempting a cover of fucking "Comfortably Numb"? Even if I don't particularly like the cover, I think it's bold, and I like it. The songs on here can be great or not, but when they hit, they are super catchy and fun, new-disco tinged rock. I'm mildly nostalgic for it, even if I only ever really listened to "Take Your Mama" and "Tits On The Radio" when I was younger. Favorite tracks: "Take Your Mama", "Laura"

Really fun album!

Very fresh when it came out first, but feeling very dated now. That being said... I Don't Feel like Dancin' - still a 5/5 Mary - 5/5 ...and a few others at 5. Overall, though, it gets a deserved 4 star

Alt rock with some dance songs, good variety

A good fun record, pretty epic debut. Faves are Laura, Take Your Mama, Tits On The Radio and that cover of Comfortably Numb just gets stuck in my head every single time.

I have a certain amount of nostalgia for this album, both because its singles were pretty inescapable for a while, and also because my mom asked me to pirate a copy for her, heh. 🏴‍☠️ Had this come back to back with Klaxons on this project, which makes for an interesting comparison - both doing a fusion of electronic and rock, but going in very different directions. Scissor Sisters being extremely poppy, I prefer Klaxons, contrary as I am.... Fave tracks - "Laura" and "Take Your Mama" from the singles, "Tits on the Radio" from the album tracks...

this was fucking weird and i was here for it

A disco cover of Pink Floyd was the last thing I expected to be on here. This was such a fun album, I really enjoyed it! Take Your Mamma & Lovers in the Backseat stick out to me.

I love when I come across a song that I didn’t know I already knew - Take Your Mama is one such song. And it’s good! The Comfortably Numb cover is like… cool? Not to sound like a fucking boomer but I don’t think I’d really reach for it instead of the original, but it’s fun and I kind of like the low key subversiveness of fucking around and making an old rock dude™️ fave super duper gay.

I really enjoyed this album. Not typically my thing, but it was real good.

The top "gay album" of all time? David Bowie, Madge, Moz and The Smiths, The Indigo Girls, George Michael and Sir Elton might like a word … but what do I know? “Tits on the Radio” is the tits, though.

These folks were just huge back in the early 00s. Laura and Comfortably Numb are great tunes. Love the vibe, the vocals, the retro disco crossed with rock crossed with 21st century gender ambiguity.

3/14/24. Happy Pi Day! The band's funny name doesn't disappoint as this is a really fun listen to put anyone in a good, excited mood. Uplifting lyrics and high energy songs really help place this higher on my list. Also love the looseness of each song.

I was a big fan of the Scissor Sisters' hit singles when they first came out in the mid-00's but it's been a long time since I spun a whole album of theirs (if at all?) This was good stuff! Such catchy, upbeat pop. Whatever happened to the Scissor Sisters? Where did they go? I want to hear what a 2024 incarnation of the band would release.

It’s already a favorite.

Much better than I expected!

Pretty fun, if not one I'll be returning to often.

Maybe not a five star for me simply because of the Comfortably Numb cover. Other than that, fantastic.

Some songs sag in the middle for me but while others have acknowledged the obvious pastiche, it's like the campiest parts of Elton and the Bee Gees dialed up to 11. Or, in other words, I got to the end and thought "well I had a really good time with that!" which is all that matters. "Take Your Mama" is an all timer for me, as is the "Comfortably Numb" cover (idc), but Scissor Sisters wrote probably one of the greatest songs ever and it's not on this one. (and sadly that album is simply not as good.)

Some tracks I recognised it’s good 4/5

To no one's surprise, Doug rates this album highly. 4.5 for a few tracks that miss the mark.

High energy, high camp!

Had it's amazing moments, but inconsistent on the whole

This album was a lot of fun. I really liked Filthy/Gorgeous and Music is the Victim. The cover of Comfortably Numb on the other hand is just bad. It’s one of my favorite Floyd songs and I just couldn’t enjoy this one.

While overall it's not for me, it's a nice, catchy, refreshing album. I'm not sold on the Comfortably Numb cover but the whole thing has good vibes. Glad I listened to it.

This is a pretty good album even though I don’t like this type of music. A good range of songs and styles

Musikalisch absolut ok. 4/5

Fun actuall!

Liked this much more than I thought

I remember this one. Hard to accept that it's already turning 20 years. It's a fun album.

Pretty cool and fun. I can't see why it was THAT popular, but definitely an enjoyable record.

A fun record. I found the Comfortably Numb cover annoying the first time around but during the second listen of the whole album I softened on it. Made me think that the 1000 or so times I’ve heard the original tune had burned so deeply that I heard the remake as off tempo noise. No Tits on the Radio is great.

Frábær plata, mikið tjútt!

A blast, 21 years old!

fun overrides all else when it comes to music for me. But this has that disco but dark feel that reminds me of the best of Elton John. Has perhaps more misses than hits (the cover of comfortably numb is forgettable) but when it hits it hits hard.

Great Comfortably Numb cover!

8.5/10 - 4/5 Most fun so far. Funky, exciting. It feels somewhere between glitzy NY and a hippie convent. I was surprised by the energy and electronic elements. The Pink Floyd cover is strange, but good.

Fun album. I don't often listen to this sort of music but enjoyed quite a bit of this. Very strong opening song too

Fun album 3:4****

Wow. I knew who Scissor Sisters were -- I even ended up in their small rehearsal space one night when I was visiting NYC: an acquaintance of the band had the key to that place, located under a bar in the Lower East Side, where I was partying with a friend of mine (and no, there was no poppers or kinky sex involved in that small space if that's what you're thinking of! - It was all very respectable, just sipping a few beers there and having a nice chat, lol). But in spite of that personal experience, I had never properly listened to any Scissor Sisters record, and I have to say I'm *very* impressed by that one. It's got just the right mix of seventies and eighties references I love, from glam-rock (seventies Elton John, of course--whose shadow looms over half those brilliantly composed cuts--but also Bowie, Bolan, Mott The Hopple...) up to eighties synth-pop understood in its most elegant definition (that whole Human League and Heaven 17 connection--plus stuff I don't enjoy as much but that's certainly iconic for gay subcultures, like The Communards, Pet Shop Boys or George Michael). You also have groovy flourishes worthy of Stevie Wonder, and, obviously, the huge and mandatory disco influence that's found in the drag queen scene, where this project originated from. Yet there's still an unmistakable "rock" energy to the whole thing, which transcends the potential overload of cheese into a truly exhilarating experience. The incredible disco cover of Pink Floyd's *Comfortably Numb* in this debut nicely sums up all those assets, with its obvious winks to Frankie Goes To Hollywood (even if the word "relax" was already in the original lyrics written by Roger Waters), or with its hilarious rëenactment of the falsetto vocal hooks of Bee Gees circa "Saturday Night Fever". It's fun. It's fresh. It's witty. With a calling card like that, Scissor Sisters was sure to leave a favorable impression to early naught audiences looking for the next big thing. Too bad I missed that train at the time... Yet as cool and humourous as all those reference points are, they wouldn't amount to much if the band didn't have such a knack for infectious earworms. And it's not only "style", folks, it's also *substance*. There's not a single filler in this record, so I'm not gonna bother quoting a lot of songs from it. Seventies-era Elton John didn't merely influence Scissor Sisters in a "pastiche" or postmodern sense of the word, you see (even if "pastiche" and "camp" are unavoidable in gay / drag queen circles, for better of for worse). He also deeply influenced the band's chord progressions, the harmonies, the care for instrumental detail, the lyrical eye, and the overall "energy" of this thing. So much that if you placed some of those songs inside *Goodbye Yellow Brick Road*'s tracklisting, you wouldn't even blink an eye. And the same can be said for the other influences guiding the Sisters. Another track thus sums up those other sorts of assets Scissor Sisters had in 2004. It's the poignant closer "Return To Oz", in a way more faithful to "Comfortably Numb"'s original epic spirit than the cover of the same name found towards the start of the album, very ironically. Scissor Sisters come full circle with that intense closer, and it's only one piece of evidence among many showing how carefully constructed the internal callbacks and other 180-degree-turn of this eponymous debut are. It's the sort of thing that allows a record filled to the brim with various music genres to become personal, sincere, and, at times, very touching. Because, well, to put it as simply as I can, the songs are excellent. So excellent that you quickly forget their "pastiche" aspects and end up enjoying them without any sense of irony in mind. I've only browsed through the next three Scissor Sisters albums, but it seemed to me they are not as spectacular as this debut. The two last ones even sound overproduced, which only brings out their "camp" aspects to far less tolerable levels (the exact opposite of the many qualities I've just spotted in the band's debut). The first side of *Ta-dah* contains a string of immediate highlights, though, proving that Scissor Sisters still had those stellar skills you will always need if you want to create memorable earworms, catchy instrumentation, and witty lyrics. Yet if we're talking about "essential albums", the eponymous debut seems to be the *one*. Glad that this app made me know it. And glad that Scissor Sisters were there to open all those doors for a lot of people during the first decade of this century. Whether front doors or back doors I might risk adding. 🙃 5/5 if you round up. (9.5/10 on a scale of 10). Number of albums left to review: 325 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 302 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 164 (including this one -- UPDATE: I've revisited this album since my original review, and oddly enough it's impact was somewhat less striking to me since. It's still a very good record, though) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 218

This album is a joyous mix of glam, disco, Philly soul, and the best of 70s style singer-songwriter. The pumping four on the floor beats present in many of the songs calls to mind the gay nightclub scene in New York that inspired this album. The Scissor Sisters’ eponymous album stands out for its time when there was just truly terrible music being pumped out. Besides the cover of Comfortably Numb, I really enjoyed this album.

A leg-humpingly fun pop-rock/disco record that starts super strong and keeps delivering a good time throughout. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Take Your Mama Date listened: 01/01/24

Taking glam rock to the next level. This thing is a party. Take Your Mama deserves to be an anthem for all time.

This is probably how WHAM! would have sounded in the early aughts were they given the freedom to be openly, flamingly gay gay gay.

Too overproduced to be as filthy as it wants to be, but I bet it's a blast live

Surprisingly enjoyable. Scissor Sisters were everywhere for a while around 2004 and I'd never listened to their album. I found myself having more fun that I'd expected.

An interesting mix of songs. All of them we pleasing to listen to. The second half of the album was reminiscent of Queen. I would listen again for sure.

"Scissor Sisters" is the debut album by American glam band Scissor Sisters. Glam rock, electroclash, nu-disco. Yep, always like seeing genres I haven't come across before. The album relates to LGBT life in New York City. The band members are Jake Shears (lead vocals, piano), Babydaddy (bass, keyboards, guitar, vocals), Ana Matronic (lead vocals), Del Marquis (guitar, bass) and Paddy Boon (drums). Commercially, the album did exceptional in the UK and Ireland hitting #1 and was the top selling UK album in 2004. It hit #102 in the US charts. It was also well received critically. The bouncey "Laura" opens the album. A rollicking piano and wah-wah guitar. "Where Is your love?" A strumming acoustic guitar begins "Take Your Mama." This is catchy pop and, wow, sounds a lot like George Michael's "Freedom." Shears is coming out to his mother, showing her activities of gay nightlife to bond. Very heartbreaking lyrics at the end. I have every reason to hate their disco-fied cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb." But I don't; I kind of like this. Jake Shears and Ana Matronic perfectly re-create Barry Gibb's vocals. This should have been the version Pink Floyd did; it might have changed Pink's trajectory....or not. The fourth single "Mary" is an emotional ballad. The piano and song overall reminds me of Elton John. A nice sax fade out outro. Shears wrote this for his best friend who died of a brain aneurysm. A heavy bass dominates "Tits on the Radio." Ana Matronic on a vocals and a commentary on the conservative media. Ana continues on vocals on the last single "Filthy/Gorgeous." Disco. Fast-paced. I had a 70's flashback. And, it's about a hooker, I believe. The album closes with a slow ballad "Return to Oz." Piano, acoustic guitar and a serious tone. The horrors of meth in the gay community. A classic rock guitar solo and a creepy piano at the end. Yeah, this album had very well constructed pop songs which go into disco, glam rock, ballads and classic rock. There are fun songs and songs with some pretty serious lyrics and tones. Overall, I did like this and definitely recommend it.

I’ve heard of the Scissor Sisters but haven’t listened to their music until now. Not sure why, but I assumed they were a completely different genre. So this was a surprise, but a good surprise. A really fantastic and fun record. Normally this isn’t a genre I care for, but I really liked this. My favorite songs were “Laura,” “Take Your Mama,” “Mary,” and “Return to Oz.” One of my biggest (good) surprises so far!

Unpopular opinion incoming. Comfortably Numb is a shit song, and no amount of disco beats and synth-pop arrangements can make it better. But the original tracks on here are all bangers. The lyrics lean a little too much into cryptic inside info, but it's still so undeniably fun. 🌈🌈🌈🌈

Really fun nostalgic album. Love that this album made it to the mainstream and the impact of the Scissor Sisters, this album deserves a lot of recognition. You can't deny this makes you want to dance!

I enjoyed listening to this, surprised that I know 90% of the lyrics of take your mama haha

Ah this album totally made me smile when I saw it pop up. Weirdly this was very much a family album for me during early teens. One of us was given it I think and it became a car journey classic and songs featured on many party compilation CDs. It is funny looking back on it now, it was just fun pop music but I looked into info about Scissors Sisters and discovered the evolution from the New York gay scene. Far removed from very hetero Kenilworth family. My mum loved Take your Mama... I love that though. We weren't exposed to enough overtly queer stuff growing up and I like that this got through. And it holds up music wise too. Just fantastic pop music.

It's a pretty good album. I remember not really liking Scissor Sisters when this came out but I was probably just anti-pop. But I don't think you can deny this is a cool sound. There are a couple of duff tracks but overall the bangers do bang.

Close to perfect pop album !

A nice collection of dancey bops

Sounds like a 70s/80s British Disco/Glam band, but it's from the US in 2004! Wow how is that possible. Are these gays time travelers? I've enjoyed the scissor sisters since they were featured in a Doctor Who episode around 2006. So, yeah, I was cool in high school.

Enjoyed!

Solid listen - I’m not sure if it belongs on this list but it was an enjoyable album and I think I’ll give it a few more listens at the very least. The cover of “Comfortably Numb” was maybe the only miss, but other than that I like the throwback, Elton John-like vibes.

Definitely gonna relisten to scissor sisters, after the third song the lyrics were consistently fye, which is a big elevator for me, along with its solid production

really fun record w a cool mix of styles turning comfortably numb into a disco banger is a feat of science

Did not realize who this was. Great album start to finish

Wildly diverse, it combines elements of pop, rock, techno and bravado.

Hi energy - great disco-esque vibes. The cover of Comfortably Numb was fabulous!!!! (wasn't available on YouTube Music in US, but found it on regular YouTube).

Incredibly strong opening even if the album falls away in quality at the end.

Dance party

Unique amongst their contemporaries, I think they successfully carved a very strong niche. I think I was maybe missing a Wow factor to enhance it all the way, but I still really enjoyed this.

Wooooo ça brasse dans l’coco

Puts the fun in funky.

Cutting a rug.

it's true, you can't hear --

I hate the Comfortably Numb cover, but everything else is great. Best track: Take Your Mama

Very good. A really fun listen. Standouts: Laura, Comfortably Numb, Take Your Mama, Mary, Filthy/Gorgeous Others: Lovers in the Backseat, Tits on the Radio, It Can't Come Quickly Enough 4/5

For a good half of this album - side 1 - it was 5 stars all the way. A slight slacking off on side 2 didn’t reel me in as much but the bonus tracks oomphed me back. For a debut album this is phenomenal and everything works. There is such a sense of togetherness and harmony and fun!!

The standouts on here are a lot of fun (Take Your Mama, Tits On The Radio, Filthy/Gorgeous) and while they are leaning in to the subversive shock appeal, I'm on board. On the other side, the cover of Comfortably Numb is a massive, colossal, spectacular fail. Swing and... ooooh... right in the sac. Go big, I guess, but how did no one in the production team pull the band aside and plead for them to reconsider? In the end, the songs that hit make up for it. I can't say I think it's a brilliant album; it's filthy and disgusting and made my work day a little less boring, so thanks!

I'm a total sucker for the nu-disco that Scissor Sisters came blasting onto the scene with in the early 00s. Completely ridiculous that this is not a record from the 80s. -1 star for the few songs parodying Elton John instead of disco - no fun at all.

Not many bands can get away with a Pink Floyd disco cover on their debut album. Scissor Sisters truly hit the scene with something else almost 20 years ago.

Nice album, pop music with some nice beats and sounds. Me personally likes a bit more up-tempo music, which this album has a few nice tracks.

Glam rock, nu-disco. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

This has got to be the silliest album I've reviewed. Big kudos for the comedy coming out of these guys. I felt like I was in a continuous SNL Justin Timberlake music video skit wrapped in ANOTHER skit making fun of that. Totally meta, I know. This is one step above a great cover band at a party and scores big points for entertainment value, but loses points for originality. Just like at any party, this album is really fun until you've had too much to drink and start vomiting.

I am genuinely shocked this is from 2004, it mostly sounds like it could have been made decades earlier. Fun record.

I usually don’t love listening to a lot of piano but it really works for me here. This was really fun.

Never heard of the Scissor Sisters. I was briefly excited that it was The Secret Sisters (not on the list…it’s worth your time to check them out). This was a fun ride. It was glammy, but not too much. The Comfortably Numb cover was well done. I liked Laura, Take Your Momma, and Music Is The Victim amongst other tracks. Even though I like the song, Lovers In The Backseat didn’t seem to fit the album. It sounds like an 80s Bowie track.

Refreshing at the time and holds up fairly well, unashamedly invoking Elton John, the Communards and 70s feel good disco.

I discovered Scissor Sisters after my Whovian friend listened to "I Can't Decide" a lot in high school. I vaguely remember checking out one of their albums, but given the fact that most of this record didn't sound familiar, I think it was Ta Dah that I previously heard. Anyway, this was just plain FUN. A bit campy, but I think it's nice when it's done well. 13-year-old me would find this utterly cringy and overly positive. 27-year-old me loves this (there are two tracks that I think are pretty weak but the rest of the album makes up for it). Reminds me of early MIKA (I love early MIKA)!

I never would have guessed in a million years that music doing so much disco referencing had come out in 2004 (compliment)

Having had the Darkness a couple of days ago, and now this, you'd be forgiven for thinking the early 00s was entirely made up of weird 'concept bands'. The Scissor Sisters hearken back to classic disco and such in a very enjoyable way for the first 5 tracks. After that, it starts to get a little samey, but who else thought 'Pink Floyd, but glittery' then pulled it off so well? And Laura is an all timer too. Lots to love here.

A new interest. Vibetones reminiscent of the seventies

Fun as hell. Pretty surprised I missed this when it came out given the year. Happy to have discovered it now.

This album has a wonderful groove that is carried by the drums who are not soft and energetic but not too frantic or too dominant either. I really enjoyed all of the songs - expect this cover of Pink Floyd's great 'Comfortably Numb'. While the cover surely has its own style it really is awful.

Such catchy tunes. Love this.

Lots of good songs, a cohesive album. I was previously only familiar with the song "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" which came after this, but most of these songs live up to the same fun and vitality. One qualm, I hated the "Comfortably Numb" cover, and am a little surprised it played a key role in the achieving notoriety. But it was just a short blip in an otherwise solid album.

On the surface, it's lame 2000s dance pop music like most of the nu-disco movement. And yes, it doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. Its influences are quite clear: Bee Gees, Prince, early house. But in no way was I even bored or exhausted. They're full of energy and utilize modern synths and studio techniques that contribute to a clean and fun sound. Nothing felt repetitive, and the track ordering was good, starting with the dance hits and moving into groovier glam rock tracks. There were a few underwhelming tracks that could be considered filler, but I found the whole listen to be quite enjoyable. Favorites: Laura, Take Your Mama, Lovers in the Backseat, Tits on the Radio, It Can't Come Quickly Enough

Nicely pitched between electro-funk disco and Elton John/Steely Dan. Very well sung by Jake Shears and music is good fun and accessible. Very enjoyable. Might become a 5 star favourite in a few more listens.

Jamiroquai vibes. Ooo, single feels like Elton John, like that.

Despite the disrespectful cover of Comfortably Numb, I liked it much more than I thought I could when I started to listen to it. It's far from perfect but an honest modern rock album.

8/10. This was delightful. I complain a lot when I get albums that are really samey throughout, and I appreciated that this one had a pretty good range to it. I see myself returning to at least some of these songs, if not the album in the future.

Some really high highs made this album a great listen. 8/10

Heard the name before, but never checked out their music. This actually was a pretty good album with strong, well executed songs. Very enjoyable.
