Reviews (page 10 of 13)

Felt pretty neutral about this one, which means I liked it more than Sonic Youth.

I'll listen to anything the Pixies release. Not my favorite album by them but still good.

Solid album, but not exceptional. Most songs sound the same, but still enjoyable to listen to.

Grungy

These guys certainly have a cult following and I’m not really in it. Some of it is ok, but mostly it’s just noise.

Another one that I wasn’t excited to listen to. I did find a few tracks kind of catchy, but overall the album didn’t quite have it for me.

Yep, I listened to that. We're done with them now, right?

I wanted to like this a whole lot more.

Good album, though I kind of zoned out for most of it, (in a good way). Velouria stood out, the rest blurred into one big surfy spaced out grunge trip, (again, in a good way).

Disappointed i liked the pixies other albums greatly but this album is not nearly as good. Not a Single Great Song on it,the Album Gas just a pretty annoying atmosphere to it.

No highlights, no lowlights. Just some alt rock album.

I didn't find much notable here. I liked the ethereal sounds, but the music didn't have much of a hook. Chord progressions were nothing spectacular. The screaming on the first track seemed a bit ahead of its time. Very grungy. It wasn't terrible, but not necessarily memorable either. Would I listen to it again? Probably not. I might listen to Velouria, Ana, and Is She Weird, and Allison again. But the rest didn't strike me as inspiring. It was a short album. But now I know who the Pixies are, and maybe it'll come up in a trivia game one day.

Not the best pixies. No real stand out tracks for me. But it’s not like i hated having it on in the background. 3

Just not a pixies fan. But good

3rd Pixies album already and it's not that I dislike them I'm just not a huge fan. That being said this was fine but I don't put their stuff on otherwise.

Never heard a Pixies song before so this was an interesting listen.

Doolittle a better album imo. Need to listen with headphones too.

This is an alright alt rock album. Not as good as the other pixies ones. This one feels like they attempted to expand their sound and test their limits a bit. All in all it was good but nothing that I would find myself coming back to. 6.1/10

Nice! Ahead of its time,

Velouria // Is She Weird // Stormy Weather // 3-3.5/5

Not my favorite songs from the band, but the sound is closer to my personal tastes in music.

Not a big fan of rock. If I turned the volume down super low it was nice background noise

Cool if not generic 90’s Alt Rock but definitely no where near as interesting as their previous albums. Not much to say lyrically other than a few tracks but the lead singers performance is consistently good. Standout tracks: Velouria, Is She Weird, The Happening

Good background music to have on when reading and no real standout songs.

Boss’s nova is greater than the some of its part but still doesn’t hold up to their previous two albums. Velouria is the only song that really stands out. Everything is else good. The album flows. 6.8/10

There’s some great stuff on here - Velouria in particular is one of Pixies’ best - but it doesn’t pack the same punch as the first two albums

Not bad. Didn't enjoy it as much as Surfer Rosa but it grew on me with the second listening.

This is my least favorite of the original Pixies albums, so I'm kind of surprised it was included. It's not bad necessarily, just not one that I go back to a lot. In general reviews tend to rank this above Trompe Le Monde and I disagree...Trompe is a much better album. Still though there are some great songs on here including Velouria, Allison, and Dig For Fire.

not my cup of tea

Pretty good

Grungy, Groovy, and Good! Nice listen.

Not really a fan

some good songs and some truly awful songs. 3 stars

I love the Pixies first 3 albums (I’m counting Come on Pilgrim here), but this album is where they started to get painful to listen to. A trend that pretty much continued from this album onwards and only got so much worse. The album has some decent highs, like Allison and Dig for Fire, but some horrible lows like All Over the World. The rest of it doesn’t draw out anything new in their style that they didn’t already demonstrate a mastery of on Surfer Rosa and Doolittle. I’d say this was their attempt at pleasing the college radio crowd they helped create, without straying too far outside the lines. It disappoints me every time I listen to it.

Not a massive fan of pixies. Can't really sing, not my gebre

Forgettable and audibly inoffensive enough that I forgot I was listening to an album on this list.

There’s excellent playing and singing and chords and structure and lyrics, but holding it all back is an incredibly repetitive lineup. The songs all sound too much alike even though they’re all good respectively. 3/5

Not as good as doolittle but still decent, few bops.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, it’s decent and has more of their progressive sound Favourite song: Track 3 - Velouria

Albumet er litt for "likt", sangene blir litt anonyme når de er så like. Men jeg liker egentlig musikken allikevel, det er klassisk gammel rock.

Space-Rock? I don't think so. Not bad, but not great.

Need to listen to the first two Pixies albums and see if I appreciate this more

Hits and some misses

Considering it had none of their big songs on it... not bad!

Very surprised at how much I liked this album. It sounds more like something that would have been put out in the early 2000’s instead of 1990.

Pretty fun alternative rock - they really like to switch between the lighter rock/pop and more zany aggressive alternative rock sound. It makes for a dynamic sound. All that being said nothing really captured my interest all that much and I wouldn't come back to this.

I think this is a bit of a step down from their previous two albums, but it’s still a lot of fun and has some great songs. The opening trio of songs really kick things off with a bang. All in all, this is a really good album.

The Pixies are one of the bands that passed me by- listening now they're pretty good but it would take a lot of plays to get into this album. On a superficial listening it doesn't seem that different to the earlier albums too.

I thought this was better than Surfer Rosa, but I just can't get into The Pixies as a band.

Ok not quite what I was anticipating! I of course have heard the "hits" so many times it hurts, so I was expecting more sparse soundscapes, laid back tempos, and kinda dopey melodies. This went pretty hard pretty often, even that Maiden like gallop in the first song. Makes a lot more sense with the influence on Nirvana than the Here Comes Your Man, Where Is My Mind types.

Quite good alternative rock album

I did like this but not enough to get it 4 stars

It’s not as good as their first two but it’s good

The Happening The end of this song got me and then I went back and relistened and yeah this is a banger. I like the album overall but don’t know that’d I’d play it regularly. But this one song made it to playlists. Had it on repeat all day. I watched a video of them performing it and read the comments. Apparently the lead singer and the woman in the band, Kim, had beef? This literally all happened when I was 1 years old, but decades later it's fascinating getting into it all. Probably one of my favorite parts of doing this project.

Pretty good stuff. Would prolly listen again.

It's neat. A bit too experimental for my tastes

So I was writing [lyrics] on napkins five minutes before I sang. Sometimes it's good, sometimes not... Ei haittaa jos paska välillä.. soi ihanasti albumi.. Kolmea tähteä nautinnolista.. sais 4 jos ei buddy vittu kirkuis mukana..

This might be the best Pixies album I've listened to. So many of these albums require chronological context to appreciate - it seems like this was an incredibly progressive album, and I bet it had a ton of influence on later alternative rock artists. It does seem a bit lengthy to me, and the Pixies do seem to be a bit formulaic (weird time signatures, indecipherable vocals, loose grooves with loose guitars.) Overall it's not something I'd listen to more than once, but it's fine to appreciate the musical progress.

not really into this record of theirs

It’s not…BAD! This is one of “those bands” that are very popular, but not well known to me, and I’m skeptical of all of the music I’ve heard. However! This album was good. Above average 90s rock sound. I look forward to diving into more Pixies in the future.

Not my favorite Pixies album but some good jams, serves as a great 'hangout' playlist if you're craving Pixies.

yay! Another Pixies album! I’m grateful for this challenge in that I “discovered” this band! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: yes Best Song:

okay hard rock sound. Didn't seem overly distinctive.

Light 4, strong 3

I always found the Pixies overrated, their music sounding always a bit disjointed and at times even out of tune. This album is more of that, albeit with a darker twist. The album starts strong with Cecilia Ann, which is an instrumental dark Surfer Rock tune. The following songs are in a similar vein, but the longer the album runs, the more Pixies standard fare appears. I guess this band is not for me. 2.5/5

Better than I had imagined but still not earth shattering. Can't think of any highlights but overall a decent enough album which didn't offend my ears. One I'll return to probably.

Welp, it might just have been a bad mood-fit, but this was very disappointing. Especially compared to Doolittle which is fantastic. It really feels sort of less stringent(?) in a way. Obviously influential, and great energy, but none of the tracks really stood out as highlights to me.

On Bossanova Pixies combine the unapologetic sound of Surfer Rosa with the more melodic approach of Doolittle. It just never reaches the heights of either of those records. Not bad but not great.

Decent, the happening is the best, quite like dig for fire and is she weird

Not much to say....but there are some good songs!

Although I have heard several tracks from the Pixies before, all of the music from Bossanova was new to me. Bossanova sounded like a Pixies album. Most of the album was pretty good. "Rock Music" and "Is She Weird" were my least favorite tracks, with too much noise, screams and grinding in the music - which can be typical Pixies. But the album finished strong with the last three tracks getting in to the less chaotic side of Pixies. "Havalina" was my favorite track. I'm interested in hearing more from the Pixies, but probably would not come back to this album as a whole.

Nothing special, I enjoy their newer stuff more

Quite a robust album! Certainly demands your attention.

I always find it interesting to play my album of the day on Spotify and then let Spotify keep playing other stuff based on that album. It makes me feel like I *should* like The Pixies, because I love almost all of the other stuff Spotify picks (Replacements, Television, Teenage Fanclub, etc.) But for whatever reason The Pixies just don't do it for me. I don't dislike them, but their songs just kind of bore me. 3 stars.

Good but nothing great

Not sure about this one. Not bad, but not great either. Maybe it needs more listens. 3/5

I like the composition and rock elements but not a fan of the low fi parts

Better than the other Pixiues albums live heard. More melodic with less screaming. Probably won’t listen again but not terrible.

I enjoy this. Not mind blowing but I see why it would have been something more revolutionary in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Frank Blacks vocal approach is more of an accent to the instruments as opposed to being a sole focus of any particular section of a song. Well made and interesting rock music.

I liked it okay. Some of these songs made more of an impact on a live concert on a video I borrowed many moons ago.

Indie rock, alternative, getting close to pop. In order to enjoy the album one must be in the mood of something calm and simple

Not as iconic as other Pixies albums. Not as weird, honestly. Still, it’s the original band and Kim Deal is still there so that warrants 3 stars.

Been ages since I listened to this album. Love Pixies and their sound and I’m torn between whether this is a 3 or a 4. Going to err on the side of caution and give it a high 3. With multiple listens, could see this being a 4. Banged a lot of 5s out lately and don’t want people thinking I’ve gone soft. Actually fuck Pixies.

Rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.

Well, if nothing else, I think I get this band and the wild fever it causes in diehard Pixies fans now more than before. I can't say I feel that same fever, but, if I may bring a personal fave of mine to the party, I sense a similarity in musical approach to that of Cheap Trick. Both are built on a foundation of punk/garage/muscular pop, and while CT leans toward cleaner more refined material and performances, this band wallows in the gritty abandon of the sloppier side and tries to steer the beast toward pop. It also seems to me that Josh Homme and Queens of the Stone Age must appreciate the Pixies based on the swings in style and delivery. The first three tracks on this album sound like they could have been three different bands, which sets the stage for "anything goes." But did I like it...? Yeah, though this is one I'd need to live with for a while before deciding what I really think.

High 3, potential low 4. Nothing specific grabbed me but could use more listens

Not necessarily my jam but some of the tracks rocked out with some strange but repetitive lyrics. Some of their washed out guitar sounds remind of Modest mouse. Jared, what the hell is Shoe Gaze???? Since the album is from 1990, I can definitely see why they were so influential

Pretty cruisy

So at first I thought it was fine, but then The Happening came on and I googled it expecting it to be this masterpiece with countless articles praising it. Those articles didn’t exist but I love it! I listened to that song alone, a dozen plus times.

Standout tracks on first listen: Cecilia Ann, Ana, Dig for Fire. Interesting mix of surf rock with alt/goth rock. Slightly abrasive in a mostly good way.

Certainly one of the albums of all time

I like when they actually sing. I wish they would do it more lol I have a love/hate relationship with the pixies. Their music is definitely a vibe but they have some parts where it seems like they're deliberately sounding bad. Which I get was a statement, made them unique, got them attention, whatever. It still sounds bad :X This album mostly doesn't sound bad though. The chords and melodies are pretty basic and same-y, that's not inherently bad, but it makes it a bit dull especially with the weak harmonies. I also don't think Black Francis is an amazing singer, at least not one I'd actively want to seek out to listen to more. They also have this thing where they like phrasing in 6 beats instead of the usual 8. I've heard them do it before (e.g. Tame) but it seemed like they do it a lot here. It's cool, keeps you on your toes a bit which is what they're going for. The intro track was surprisingly good. Alison, Is She Weird, and especially Down to the Well were the tracks that stood out the most.

it's okay i guess the guitars sound a little too "surf rock"-ish for my liking - kind of okay in small doses but across a whole album it gets tiresome decent alt rock but not super catchy or memorable, i wouldn't switch off it but i wouldn't really go out of my way to seek it out actually by the end i got a little bored, not a lot of the later songs are memorable and they blend together. frank black is kind of annoying. i guess on reflection there are some decent songs I just probably wouldn't want to listen to the whole album

started out really good, first two songs were fun. velouria was mid. after that it was some good, some less good i liked it best when they were fast paced and going crazy and it sounded like they were having fun. lyrics were v weird sometimes but in a good way not a lot of it stuck in my head tbh but i enjoyed the sound and feel of it. a little disappointed after the opening, thought i was going to love this but instead it was just pretty good

i forgot like everything about this album after i listened to it so i think that’s a sign that it was perfectly Fine

Again, it's very obvious how Nirvana was influenced by this act. Some of the songs were a bit repetitive. (Stormy Weather, anyone?). But the introductory instrumental is a great way to start off. Short, punchy songs, which is always good (don't overstay your welcome.) But none of the songs really stood out to me. That's never a good sign. It's one of those albums that I guess I just don't get the following.

It took me awhile to get into this album but I admit it grew on me. I don't think the Pixies ever do anything bad but this one is a bit of the whole is worth more then the sum of its parts. There's a few songs that rock right away (Velouria, Dig for Fire) and a few others that only take a couple listens to realize they rock (Rock Music, Hang Wire, Stormy Weather). It's the Pixies doing Pixie things - guitar distortion, unique time signatures, varied vocal approaches, lyrics that range from witty to weird - but I can't shake that I don't find it is as good or appealing as their first two albums.

I love the opening track. The other songs ranged from quite enjoyable to meh so I think this has to be a 3/3.5.

'Twas alright

T3B 1. The Happening 2. Dig for Fire 3. Velouria No complaints. Pretty good listen. 3.

Nice solid offering to end the week. Somewhat forgettable but was decent drivetime background

Very okay-ish rock album. When I started listening I banged - or rather nodded - my head and thought to myself: "This will be a good one" and when it ended I didn't really recall any of it.

Pixies eru svo mikið æði. Þessi plata er engin Doolittle en samt stuð.

It's really telling when the entry for this album on the list spends most of its time talking about how it doesn't live up to their earlier work and the cracks were forming.

Rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.

It’s Pixies!

I'm down with the Pixies, and Havalina is a great song. That's the review. It's a good album.

Peut mieux faire

Too heavy at times

Sounded like the same song over and over again. If this had been a putely instrumental album, I may listen to it on occasion for the vibe, but the singing kills it for me. Would not recommend to a friend.

So I'd been invited to go see the Pixies in concert the morning this popped up and I thought 'oh it's a sign' - and it was! A sign not to waste the money. I mean a couple of tunes but interspersed with some rubbish. This isn't why they are such a cult band surely?!

I always want to like the Pixies, but every time I listen to them, I just…don’t. Not exactly sure why. The sound of the guitar is just too harsh and it overpowers the rest of the sound. I like a couple of their songs here and there (like Where is my Mind?), but otherwise, not really a fan.

You can hear a lot of foundations for later alternative bands. It's soul-grooving, with driving guitars and interesting lyrics.

Meerdere keren herbeluisteren!

Really enjoy the spacyness of this punk record. Vocals range from raging and intense to serene cleans. Guitars are frantic and reverb-drenched. I've never really dug into Pixies, but this was way more eclectic than I expected. Enjoyed quite a bit though it falls off a little in the latter half. Highlights: Rock Music, Velouria, Is She Weird, Down To The Well

Interesting punk that I would give a second listen. Still unsure if I like it or simply appreciate it

Un bon album des pixies. J’ai prefere l’autre sur la liste3.25

The band will be remembered for their fame and sound, but this punk album simply does not leave a lasting impact on you the way the grunge and pop punk of the decade would.

Decent alternative rock but thats about it

Their fourth best album, if you count the "Come on Pilgrim" EP. Some bright spots but nowhere near as consistent as their earlier work.

Slack Francis

did little

decent and some bangers but nothing i was super crazy about

More punk than expected

This album went by insanely fast for 14 tracks. I wasn't expecting it to be this punky since my only exposure to the pixies is basically just where is my mind. But by insanely fast I also meant that it kinda went in one ear and out the other unfortunately

Awesome

A few good tunes on here. Interesting that some of the songs have a ska feel to them. Overall this is a pretty good album.

Have not listened to carefully, but was good noise for the background.

D’unno wait that doesn’t look right

Really good sounding 90s band. You can see that in the future of that band they will become more commercial and that's okay.

Love the pixies

Not as strong as their first two albums in my eyes but still solid. Definitely the beginning of their downhill trajectory though unfortunately.

Number two from the Pixies I believe, and I think it's enough of a sample size for me to say I enjoy this band. Definitely not on the same level as Surfer Rosa for me, but still some great cuts on here. Though for some reason I replayed the last few tracks multiple times and it was like I was stuck in the Bermuda Triangle, they kept slipping by without me catching anything. Cool album though! Favorite tracks: All Over the World, Dig for Fire, Is She Weird. Album art: Galactic and earthly at the same time. Seems like something Smash Mouth would do. Kind of cool design, but nothing too memorable. 3.5/5

Didnt love this. Was kinda interesting the vocals threw me off. Velouria was the most okay.

Listened to on 7/13/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: Cecilia Ann ROCK VIBES! Good rock album that was stellar background music

Eh, it was alright. Didn't enjoy all of it, just a few tracks.

Call me crazy but after reading the name of the album I was expecting, well, Bossa Nova. Silly me. Anyway, it's a good off the beaten track album that is very heavy, raw and energetic. I wouldn't be interested in this every day, but it works for me today.

After Surfer Rosa and DooLittle this LP doesn't seem to be taking us anywhere. Velouria is a good song but seems like a rehash of Wave of Mutilation. Hang Wire sounds like... The album seems to be making a statement that their best stuff is behind them. Funny title, though.

There are some good tunes here. The Pixies definitely have a distinctive styles and cadence, The problem is that they use the same style throughout the album so it all blends together after awhile.

Flashes of brilliance. Too much filler. Best track: Velouria

To me, the Pixies fall into a similar category of esoteric or contentious brilliance and I think 'Bossanova' is perfectly curated collection of songs that illustrate what I mean. Each track is captivating in its own way, but it's hard to tell whether you're still listening because of the harmony or the dissonance. The band manages to flirt right at the boundaries of both ends of that spectrum simultaneously, turning it into more of a closed loop than a continuum. Overall, the album is built on the foundation of an electrified and blurred out beach-rock sound. The moods of the album are varied, ranging from mellow (i.e. 'Havalina') to manic (i.e. 'Rock Music') and many unsettled points in between (i.e. 'Is She Weird'), 'Hang Wire'). The vocals are all over the place and seem to be deliberately imperfect, and there is a quirk there that makes it all work. And I think that's the thing about the Pixies. They are easy to dismiss or dislike on the surface. I've personally resisted getting into their music and really understanding its appeal. You have to spend time with it and grow a personal connection. That's not what everyone is looking for when it comes to music, certainly not of this genre, but it's there if you've got time to give.

Decent punky album

It is fine, kinda gloomy sticky moody music. It won't really depress you but it won't cheer you up either. Reminded me of Paradise Lost here and there.

Another good one of theirs.

Interesting mix of spacey and trashy rock music here. I tend to lean towards the former, so the record finished better than it started off for me. A few really decent songs on it, although most were too quick or one-dimensional to make me want to come back. 6/10

Sits at the intersection of the decades gracefully, calling back to 80s guitar tones and melodies (some things on here sound verbatim Clash) while dialing up the distortion that would pervade the 90s grunge scene. Not all tracks on here are memorable or enjoyable, but the LP still deserves big props for balancing such a notable shift in popular styles as well as it does.

Some nice stuff in there, but - it's no Doolittle.

Fine, but not particularly mind-blowing. A bit too angry and shouty for my tastes at the beginning, but settles down a bit without losing its energy. Nothing that really stands out, bottom end of a 3 I think.

Leuk om een keer gehoord te hebben, maar ik ben niet zo'n fan van de zang.

Wisselend, als je het mij vraagt. Zitten wel echt leuke elementen in, zoals dat hoge gezang icm de ruigere muziek.

Not as good as the first two. Still good, but just not quite there. Can't put my finger on why, maybe it's the songwriting, maybe it's the production. Seems much more of its time than Doolittle or Surfer Rosa.

Strong 3, decent

What I'm listening to....It distains the name "Bossa Nova"

Unspecial but unoffensive

Third best OG Pixies album. Over the years, I’ve seldom listened past Velouria. Today I confirmed why.

It's not Doolittle. There was a lot to like but The Happening...that just feels like another seed towards Kim Deal leaving the band

Solid album. But not my favorite from the pixies

Ok-ish

5/10 Best song - The Happening

i'd say this was average! i enjoyed it just fine and there was some excellent guitar noises, but it didn’t super stand out to me. since reading dracula, i can say this is one of my favorite lyrics: “is she weird, is she white, is she promised to the night?”

Wel prima maar kan toch nooit helemaal genieten van de pixies, na een paar nummers wordt het zeurderig

too ruidous

Skoro sam 2 dao, kad paše onda stvarno super, kad ne uši me bole. Očekivao sam puno više. Velouria easily najjača pjesma na albumu i šire!

Probably a bit unfairly I listened to this right after Doolittle, and unfortunately it doesn’t quite have the same impact. It’s a solid sounding album, but the songs struggle to jump out and make an impression. If anything its slightly more consistent of an album than Doolittle, it feels like it has a slightly darker tone, more spacey alt-rock but a bit more gothy. Unfortunately tends to get a bit irritating at times. 3/5 - It was was alright, probably won’t listen again

Nice to hear a whole album

meh 5/10

Pretty Good

SHOCKED to discover there's a Pixies song longer than 5 minutes. It's an entertaining listen for sure, but I wouldn't say an essential one. After releasing Doolittle the previous year it feels like they might've phoned this one in juuuust a little. 3.5.

The album radio tho..

Some good noise that you can get a little lost in, but honestly nothing that really shines for me.

I like the Pixies in general, but I didn't find much in this album that really grabbed me. Both Surfer Rosa and Doolittle had songs that I really liked, but none of the songs here really stood out to me. It sounds like the Pixies, it was really consistent without being boring, but it never really seemed to reach the heights of the other two albums for me 3/5

We've had a lot of pixies on this list, my opinion on them is still much the same. It's enjoyable but not a stand-out album for me

I can't believe I never listened to an entire Pixies album. What a refreshing discovery. As well, they are originally from Boston! The album began strong, and then it started decaying, imo.

Fun and engaging album with some great variety, makes for a quick and enjoyable listen, but didn't change my life

Two pixies albums in 3 days, hmmm. Heavy surf-rock vibe. More of a pop sensibility, but still with some of raucous energy of Surfer Rosa. Doesn't hit the high points as strongly as Doolittle.

Punk sensibilities in a noise rock suit. Tracks are hit or miss, but there's a good amount of experimentation and influences from other genres, which keep things interesting.

3.6 - It has its brilliant moments but they seem keener on showing off how cool and in-the-know they are. Definitely impressive how woven into the fabric of modern rock they are but I’m left cold.

Velouria is a cool song. Ana is interesting. Back half drags a little. Sounds and production aren’t too interesting. I can kinda see how Weezer was influenced by them.

cool album has some nice songs a little bit alternative compared to mainstream rock

Did not expect to hear that western theme at the beginning, or whatever that was. Overall, hard for me to get into this band, not much of this was holding my attention.

Not as great as Doolittle but still good. I don't think I'd really go back to this album much though.

Enjoyable listen without ever reaching across the emotional aisle of the mind.

A very solid listen, no stand-out tracks for me but good variety and some great grooves. Better than 80% of the non-grunge music coming out in the early 90s.

At the time, mind blowing, but that was because I had consumed surfer Rosa and Doolittle and wanted just more and more pixies. Over time, I have come to the conclusion that SR and D were the highlight albums for me, and Bossanova was great but not quite hitting those early heights. Still quite fabulous, obvs

Pretty cool. Can definitely hear how this has shaped a lot of recent things

October 7, 2021 Not bad!

eh.... 3?

Some great songs but the overall feel dates it ..

Beetje zoals zoveel rockbandjes. ***

The Pixies are in their own field of 90's alt rock. The being, there doesn't seem to be any other band like them. And to that extent they're pretty good at what they do, but it's not for me. I think that, for the people that it is for, they'll absolutely love it. I can easily see this being my favorite album if I was more into the sound, because The Pixies are exceptionally good at what they're doing here.

Shouty, screamy, quiet, loud, aliens, love, hate, rock music. Pixies. Best Tracks: Velouria; Is She Weird; Dig For Fire

I like the Pixies and I’ve listened to this album a fair bit over the years. I don’t know that I think this is their best: the execution is a little muddy in places.

It's indie but it's good. Bit forgettable though, first couple of songs were the best by far. 3/5.

3/5. so slow.

Such a dramatic step down from their previous material but still slaps here and there.

3.5 honestly Ana Allison The Happening Havalina

Not my favorite

As someone who does not traditionally listen to rock, I am definitely not qualified to rate this album based on any of characteristics a typical rock listener wants in an album like this. With all that said, Bossanova is a juxtaposition of an album, contrasting intensely abrasive guitars and sometimes even purposely sour/devilish notes to softer, melodic and almost poppy ambience cut through with consistently great drums (seriously I love the drums on this album). To a rock fan this may feel like the light and dark battling it out in a beautiful piece of art, but to someone like me who doesn't normally gravitate this sound, it would be more accurately described as an intense sprint with momentary gasps of fresh air between dashes. Notable songs (FOR ME): "Dig for Fire", "Hang Wire" and "Stormy Weather".

Whenever I listen to The Pixies I enjoy them but there’s not really anything incredible about it to me. I enjoyed this and there’s some good fun alt and punk rock but I’m not going to remember it a week from now.

I feel I should like this more than I did, but I find the prixies a bit samey and never got the hype. Maybe I am a bad pixies fan as I only really like the hits. Highlight is probably is she weird

Cool alt rock. Some of the songs have a surf-rock type vibe.

The Pixies have a sound that is consistent throughout the work I've heard. Bossanova has differing musical elements and devices. The composition ranges from simple to complex with layers of vocals and instrumentation but it's used sparingly throughout each song. The Pixies don't butter my bread but I respect the artistry and the musicianship and can see how they were influential to the 90s grunge/punk/rock scene.

I can see why some folks would like this, but it's just not my jam.

Liked this. Better than I expected.

Velouria: Really like the guitar Lovely vocals Got a bit boring after the 2 minute mark - a bit boring Is she weird: Quirky vocals Bit repetitive and sounds a bit too sharp for my ears overall maybe a 5/10

It's was nice Nothing crazy I think I'm all Pixied out

So much sprang up from what these guys did.

Didn't listen too closely. Too rocky.

An uns für sich echt gut und abwechslungsreich. Umgedreht könnte man sagen der rote Faden fehlt etwas

Not quite as exciting as their other albums, although Dig for Fire is great

Never clicked for me

A little too 80s punk/metal for me

was hoping to like this more but was slightly disappointed :(

Have tried to get into pixies over the years but have never found them to be as good as everyone seems to say they are!

Another one of those bands that I only know the hits. I liked this, but felt very disjointed to me. Like every other song could have been a different band. The whole thing just didn’t gel as an album. It’s good though!

Frank Black Francis Pixie. No better scream among all the screamers. Soft verse loud chorus. Frank's language slang of syllables shastashee velouria havalina kadoona hiyanoom. Gen X galloping Boston beach Pixie. Looks nothing like an indie rock star. More like someone who would interview Marilyn Manson on MTV, or operate a local car wash. Modest Mouse loves you Frank. Bossanova is missing Surfer Rosa jagged edges and Doolittle hooks but it's still great. B+

Pretty good. The pixie sound is there. Lots of fun, proto-indie-punk catchy as hell foot tappers. Definitely ahead of its time. Velouria really stands out, shows hints of what’s to come. However, the album as a whole doesn’t reach the heights of their more mature albums. B-

Not bad

Good enough but nothing super amazing

Some good songs. Overall it was good. Nothing massively jumps out.

Better the second time around.

perfectly forgettable grunginess. Oddly dissonant in some later tracks.

Very catchy tunes! Has that polished, yet garage band sound.

Quite enjoyed it, some tracks more than others. A steady ***

Fine. Nothing really stood out though.

I liked it a decent amount, but nothing was super memorable. 7

not bad!

I do like the Pixies, but not this album as much as Doolittle. You can definitely hear how this album inspired Nirvana, Weezer, and tons of other alt-rockers.

Noisy and sometimes groovy. 5/10

Feels idk punky? All over the world cool.

Not really feeling this one.... same as some of the other albums like this. Never really hooked me and gave me a reason to want to keep listening. The first song slaps though

I liked it... starting to appreciate the Pixies more and more.

I loved the surfy opening track, but past that it was typically 90s indie rock, which is just not my thing

The first track was really promising, but the rest of it ended up pretty average.

Has some good songs, but then some are pretty awful. So a typical Pixies album, I guess. 3/5

Very Pixies....

not that bad

Didn't know anything of this band prior but they were heavier than I expected. I like that.

Not the best Pixies album but a good'un

Solid. Distant 3rd best Pixies album behind Doolittle and Surfer Rosa. 7/10

Rock and Roll music was very metal. Ana has a great intro. The Happening felt really long for an otherwise tight album.

Solid early 90's rock album. I liked it, didn't love it.

Good background music to work to. Velouria and Ana were favorites.

Nothing stood out much after first listen. Intro track was fine.

I liked it but it couldn’t keep my attention. I kept walking away.

Pretty easy stuff to listen no. Nothing really stands out in a positive or negative way.

Cecilia Ann is pretty sweet. Overall fun listen

Whoa! Dig on Fire!

Definitely Rocked, felt like a bunch of deep tracks that I’ve never heard

I really love Dolittle, and Dolittle this ain't. Not that it's bad, but almost every song feels a *bit* too long, and the vocal mixes can be a little off too.

Sick opening track. not bad album, knew a couple pixies songs before, they're pretty right though

was alright, I can see where Nirvana got their inspiration from

-Heavy but occasionally futuristic -Not too long, didn't overstay its welcome

3/5 Music good but repetitive.

Solid, I always associate with Modest Mouse for whatever reason but prefer the latter

1990. Key Songs: The Happening, Is She Weird, Velouria

Not bad.

Literally not one single standout thing I can remember about the album. 2.5 stars.

I don’t think I’m cool enough to get it. All the songs feel pretty unremarkable. I didn’t hate it. 2/5

After the last few days this was a bit of a let down. Nothing wrong with it, just a bit flat.

Not a great fan of the Pixies. All a bit samey.

Rock Music was an assault on my ears. The rest largely forgettable

Was expecting a lot more after Teenager of the Year but somehow this just feels like a load of indie noise. I'm sure some will love it but just not for me. 2*

Previously unknown. Meh.

Kinda like a new surf rock feel. I kinda dig individual tracks, and may opt to put a few of those on every now and then but I couldn't see myself putting the whole album on.

Just an OK Pixies album

It was like the remembered the Pixies song but forgot to write songs

ruido para llenar mis oidos despues de dos noches de joda loca en retorno a mi hogar

Fine, but not something to revisit

Another example of a band being more influential than successful. This, their third album, shows a band who leave you wondering what you're going to get next and this to me is its greatest strength. I like the opening instrumental opening track, which suggests they have a melodic ability in and amongst their alternative noise and dynamic contrast which laid the ground for grunge. I see that the UK took to the pixies far more than their home country, despite the alt rock boom slowly usurping the mantle of traditional big groups in the US. I know a true fan of this band but I am a little unconvinced overall despite some 'moments'.

Alright, after a second pixies album I have decided I do not like them. While this album isn't as full of shitty screaming tracks like surfer Rosa was, it is instead full of mediocre alt garage rock songs that are like two and a half minutes long each. Nothing stood out, felt unique, or was really enjoyable. Bleh

Sounds a little like The B-52s if they got real angry. A handful of the tracks on this album featured interesting and delicate guitar, supported by tight instrumentals and somewhat appropriate vocals. The first and last tracks are good examples of songs by the Pixies that I think have a lot of artistic value and are enjoyable to hear. If this album stretched those songs a little longer and featured more of them, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more. However, most of the songs are very short and don't feature enough depth to develop over the course of their short playtime. This album's total playtime is already on the short side, so the fact that many of the tracks are short themselves makes this album sound like it doesn't have much depth to offer, and is instead a collection of ideas that should have either been developed further or cut entirely.

Not so many catchy tunes as on different albums of theirs, I do appreciate the format and the influence that this band had on others. However, is this a top album, my answer is no.

Started with some solid surf punk in the first half, then petered out to mid alternative around track 8.

Would not buy

Like their other album it wasn't bad, this one seemed to fly by but I cant remember a single track of it

There were some interesting tracks here, but not my favorite

I like a handful of Pixies songs but didn’t love this album

This was kind of forgettable. Not something I would go back to.

Some decent songs, but overall it didn't engage me firmly or speak to me, and a few of the songs felt abrasive without redeeming qualities.

The album was ok, for some reason I have never really latched on to the pixies
