Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Good, but not great. I’d add a few tracks to a playlist but would choose Doolittle or Surfa Rosa for a Pixies full album experience.
Pretty good, better than I thought it'd be.
Theoratically i would like it but meh
Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are the essence of Pixies, as any fule no. I was familiar with Trompe La Monde, though not this. It’s fine. But did nothing to change my mind
Listened before!
It’s real good but it gets a 3 because I know the pixies are capable of much more than this.
3.4.
Pretty cool but mostly misses, velouria song is my fave
I've never quite got the appeal of Pixies, this album mostly feels like "surf rock on valium" and mostly just glazes over me - sorry to all the die hard fans out there, but this is a resounding mneh from me. Also Black Francis' voice just winds me up.
I expected to like this more than I did
This was fine, but nothing special. I lump them with a band like Sleater-Kinney with both having much bigger, more passionate fanbases than I suspect they deserved.
It's more interesting than most rock from the era. I'm second guessing myself, because I think I like it more than my initial reaction. It's ultimately enough to make me want to listen to it again, so I guess it's on the higher end for this project.
My least favorite Pixies album, but still a banger.
Eh, Doolittle is better
Good album, but not my favorite of theirs
Was hoping I was going to enjoy this one more. But a solid album and a good listen. 3.5 for me.
Decent album. A bit tired of generic rock though. Couldn't catch the lyrics all too clearly, so relied more on melody and vibes.
Cool cool not a big deal.
Didn't like this as well as some of their other albums. It's still okay though.
Never heard any of these songs from the Pixies. Could be because they are very ok. They are not bad by any means but not great either. Kind of one of those play in the background kind of albums. 5/10
harder rock, alt than i thought
Ahhh, my least favorite Pixies album. I still love a good chunk of these songs and others I found a new appreciation for on a fresh listen, but, damn, I can't pinpoint what exactly doesn't work with this album. It feels off.
meh
The Pixies made some very good music. This isn't it. It's not bad, but it's not great either.
a bigger sound but significantly less inspired 6/10
didn’t enjoy it anywhere near as much as Doolittle. none of the tracks stood out upon first listen
fun rock album
Not sure what to think of it. This is like grunge with ADHD. It's all over the place, both the individual songs and the album as a whole. I get why people like that, but I dunno. Harmony is important guys. The opener was fantastic and the second half of the album is much stronger than the first in general imo. 6 / 10 Best tracks: Cecilia Ann, Dig for Fire, Down to the Well, The Happening
I liked the instrumental opener(s?). It's definitely a Pixies album!
5/10…alternative rock / indie / grunge
alright indie rock, the sound was consistent but nothing really stood out in particular
I thought I'd enjoy this a lot more than I did It was good, but I just couldn't vibe with it? Something was off and I can't place it 3 ⭐️
Liked it.. didn’t love it.
A good overall album - Allison was a standout for me, but not their strongest .
It's fine, nothing amazing nothing bad. Solid mid, probably not to listen through again as an album
Good. 3.5
This was pretty decent!
okay i guess
It's alright but there are so many other albums in this genre and time period I'd rather listen to.
Pixies have some great songs, too bad none of them were on here. This one's alright but nothing stands out. The Breeders are better anyway
Meh. Bring on the other two.
Yahooooooo!
Some highlights, like the opener, but not enough songs really stood out
very mid. I think maybe 90s rock just isn't my jam.
Where are my fucking songs? 6/10
While I have heard some Pixies material before, I was not previously familiar with this album. This was a fine listen, but nothing particularly stood out to me. I liked it enough to hear again however.
Very good band with a unique sound. Not as familiar with this album, but happy to have listened to it.
2.5
What I would describe as the typical 90s alternative album. Is She Weird All over the World
So far my third favorite Pixies album, alright.
Great album
I like the Pixies sound but could never just get full on the Pixie band wagon for some reason. This was a solid album but not great.
Meh
Muy monótono
It’s on
I like it, but I just don’t think I’d seek it out again. I like Is She Weird the best.
mostly good jams
Classic album, with lots of mileage on these tracks. Not a big fan, but worth a spin now and again.
Velouria is a great song.
Wasn't a huge fan!
Some fun songs
A few good ones, a lot of rock filler imo
Hang Wire should be a much popular tune from this album.
Has a few great songs, but a mid one seen as a whole. Favorite track: All over the world other picks: Valouria, Cecilia Ann, dig for fire, stormy weather
I love the pixies. I've loved them since they started making music. But returning to Bossanova is a bit of an eye opener.... It's their third album. Some would say that here is where they finally came into their sound, confident in their alternative music success, refining all that had come before into a signature aurally. I remember loving this album. Playing it endlessly. Using it as cultural currency in conversations. Happy thst a band I knew already was finally becoming more mainstream and noticed.. But listening to it this week, I noticed something different. Yes, it's a refinement of pixies sounds and signatures, but it's also repetitious. The freshness of Doolittle and Surfer Rosa are recycled here....more of the same. More. Same. The best news for fans who don't want their favourite bands to change, but--from another perspective--creeping stagnancy. Or maybe more kindly...a holding pattern, a careless stasis that comes from touring fatigue and the pressures of being more visible. Energies were being siphoned off already...Kim Deal was recording Pod with her Breeders side project...a fresh and fun new collective.... Not to diminish the power and importance and sound of this album, but its less of a maturing sound than a fatigued one for this amazing band...
Didn't enjoy as much as other pixies stuff I gotta say.
It's fine.
Had a few fun songs, rest of it was okay but not super special.
Not my favourite pixies album, but sounds good
Another one of those, I can take it or leave it albums.
This album has some 4s for sure but not everything is as strong. Great listen, skillfully done, fun to listen to.
This is a fine album. Wouldn't be my first pick to put on these days but it's fun. Some good melodies in there I can hear some of the influence they had on Nirvana in here.
Not as good as Doolittle
Inte lika vass som Doolittle men ändå helt okej.
Now that it's been made apparent, in hindsight, that time was running out for the original iteration of the Pixies, it is clear that Bossanova is made of some peculiar material. The penultimate album from Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering, Bossanova alternates between bewildering fast paced speed runs, off-kilter tunes and genuine soon-to-be classics. Perhaps as purposefully uncompromising as it comes compared to the records that came before, Bossanova had become the signpost for what was soon to come and what will never be again. Favorites: Rock Music, Velouria, Allison, Is She Weird, All Over the World, Dig for Fire, Blown Away, Hang Wire, Stormy Weather.
Not my favourite Pixies
Unfortunately listened to it in the background while I worked. It was alright.
This is heavier than i thought they were. I can’t speak for other albums but This album definitely screams 90’s. If I hadn’t known who The Pixies were I may have skipped them completely with Cecilia Ann being their first song on the album and it being instrumental. Stop it with that shit boys. To me, this is not a standout album at all. It’s not terrible but when you’re looking for something to hook you and don’t find it? You get no more than 3 stars Choice cut: Is She Weird
Pretty good, quite my style. Not completly there though
Feels strangely middle of the road. Not what I expected.
One of the tracks was screaming, I did not enjoy that. Generally an alright album.
It’s fun but not a favorite. A tad repetitive.
again, Pixies has a strong first 1/2 of the album, then just fades. 3
So great, for me, better than Doolittle. There it's a kind of zhoegase or is only my perception?
There are 2 much better pixies albums. This one is alright
Love Surfer Rosa, love Doolittle...but this one has always left me a little cold. It's, fine I guess, but nothing approaching their best. I mean even Trompe le Monde has U-Mass on it.
I would have said the Pixies were a 90s band but today I learned they are an 80s band. They seem like the transition from 80s music to 90s music which is exactly the timeline. I cannot understand a word of Rock Music through the screaming. The Pixies should have been bigger than Nirvana. They are like pre-Grunge and Nirvana in particular has borrowed from their sound. First half of the album was better than the second.
Not as good as surfer rossa or dolittle. But still decent.
I like the Pixies a lot. Surfer Rosa and Dolittle are two of my favorite albums. This, as a follow-up, is a little bit of a let down. It is an average album that followed two stellar albums. Clearly there was issues within the band at the time, with Charles and Kim not getting along. But it is still better than Trompe Le Monde, which was the clear sign the band needed to pack it up.
Not usually the kind of rock I’m into but I actually really enjoyed the album. Songs were repetitive but fun to listen to
3 flat
They kind of went off the rails
First half of this is great but then it runs out of steam. The sound of a band writing songs in the studio and dusting down a couple of early cast offs. I'm surprised it is on her when there are no Breeders albums.
I have enjoyed the other Pixies albums on this list. This one needs another listen as it didn't quite quite land for me.
Ahhhhhh shoot. I love Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, they’re some of my favorite albums ever. I’ve never listened to this one before and ugh it’s just missing something, or rather it’s been tainted by too much. It’s over produced, it just doesn’t sound as raw, but worse it doesn’t sound as fun. The drum machine makes everything feel hollow. Imagining a song like Bone Machine with it really shows just how important it is. Some of the songs on here really are good, which shows they still have that it factor.
I've never really gotten into the Pixies and this album doesn't help. I will confess they are a good band, just not my style. But fercryinoutloud, why this album? They've done so much great music and this is the choice? 3/5
Just not my thing but yeah it was solid
Overall good album, but most of the lyrics didn't make any sense. My favourite songs were: Is She Weird All Of The World Dig For Fire The Happening
confusionario: a tratti molto bello, a tratti volevo strapparmi le cuffie. un tre politico.
Wasn't really compelling, didn't actively dislike it either.
Some fun here, but not the Pixies best by any means.
Pretty good punk/grunge whatever. Not as good as Surfer Rosa.
Mediocre.
There are elements of the album that I really like - the drumming, the melodies. But there are elements that I really dislike - the shrieking and discordant elements. So I'll take some and leave some.
I don’t like this as much as Surfer Rosa or Doolittle. Their sound is incredibly clean on this one - which distracts as it loses the rawness of the previous two albums. I will say it sounds like the 1990s. You can hear snippets of all the different sounds that will come in the decade. Velouria and Digging for Fire slap.
Not my bag 2.5/5
Pretty good. 3.5
This was just ok. Mildly entertaining. This band has two legendary records, so are there three on the list? If so, too much Pixies, if not, just another waste of time
forgettable
Alternative indie type rock with some weird stuff thrown in. Mostly fine but nothing in particular stood out.
norm
Good album, not much to say. #99
Not really my jam, but I get the appeal for the era.
Pleasantly surprised about this one
Album almost completely passed me by without realising. Jangly opening not what I was expecting and then suddenly Spotify has queued up something else. Probably not a good thing
Cecilia Ann - 4 Best Pixie song so far. Rock Music - 1 Worst Pixie song so far. Velouria - 3 Allison - 2.5 Is She Weird - 2.75 obnoxiously repetitive Ana - 3 All Over the World - 3 Dig for Fire - 3.5 Down to the Wall - 4 The Happening - 3.5 Blown Away - 3.5 Hang Wire - 3 Stormy Weather - 3 Havalina - 2
Average Pixies
Bossanova by Pixies Tuesday 6/25/24 2:47 S Tier————————— Cecilia Ann A Tier————————— Down To The Well B Tier————————— Dig For Fire Blown Away Havalina Ana Allison Stormy Weather Velouria Is She Weird The Happening Rock Music All Over the World Hang Wire
Pretty ok, actually. I’m not sure what else to say. There were moments where I could really hear the influence they had on Nirvana, so that’s good.
2.75 can't really get into them
A definite unique sound. But a lot of their songs sounded similar to each other. But a rather enjoyable album.
Fine but not crazy about
3/5
This is my least favorite of the first four Pixies albums. That would put it behind Dolittle, Surfer Rosa, and Come on Pilgram, respectively.
It was okay
they felt a little off their game? few tracks i enjoyed. doolittle still prob the fav
I don’t like this one very much. Big pixies fan, I thought, but this one is scratchy and lacks some of that surreal charm that I love from earlier albums. I think there’s a reason I missed it.
Solid album, not really my jam but I can see the influence the Pixies and this album have had for years after.
Much as I loved the first three Pixies albums, I always thought Bossanova was a bit of a disappointment. Apart from 'Is she weird' and 'Dig for fire' (with its surreal lyrics being in the same mould as Doolittle's 'Monkey gone to heaven'), most of the tracks are Pixies by numbers, IMHO. Still worth delving into though, particularly for the two aforementioned tunes which remain fantastic.
p642. 1990. 3 stars. Average rock band with some decent tunes, but lyrically inept. You can hear the influence on Nirvana, it's just that Kurt Cobain did it better :)
This one didn’t strike me nearly as much as the other Pixies album I just had (Doolittle). In fact, I think having that one so recently made this one fall a little flatter.
It's a good album, but doesn't stand out in any way over other good rock albums from this era
Alright
good probably wont listen again though
Solid but not spectacular - 7/10
In the words of Jonah, really good classic rock album. Well not a classic rock album, but a classic rock album. 7/10 (a bit shouty at times)
Cool sound, punky, edgy, and kinda pre-grungy. I liked it, but probably wouldn't listen to it again. Three stars.
Kinda a lesser pixies. Like the full sound and the instrumentals and the weird track lengths, but criminal underuse of kim deal. And the songs just aren't as interesting as we know young boy is capable of. Velouria I'd heard before, and it's the best.
I wanted to like this more than I did, but it was an overall enjoyable listen. I think I'm feeling some alt/punk fatigue from this list overall and an unfortunate result is I find it harder to enjoy albums I may have earlier in the process.
Meh
This isn't bossa nova but I'm really not all that mad about it 3/5
Maybe the dorks in high school were right…
Death To The Pixies
Solid but not their best stuff from the original quiet/loud masters…
Hey some of this is nice! That loudquietloud sound indeed, im more for the quietloudquiet. The happening is nice
This is alright. Don’t love it, don’t hate it. A little bit weird, sometimes annoying, kind of catchy, sort of forgettable. Right down the middle.
Can hear its influence, but not an overly enjoyable listen
Rockin, dig storm is coming, prefer other pixies album
Very indicative of who the Pixies are - fun, upbeat, indie rock
Is okay. The singing is a bit raspy.
After my first listen, I’m left feeling in this mid state. Nothing particularly grabs me, but I also don’t hate anything about it type of deal. This album bleeds 90’s, and is very distinguishable for its time, and again- I love that. I’ll have to give another listen, because this one deff feels like it’s gonna grow on me big time. I enjoyed Ana and blown away quite a bit!
This record actually wasn’t too bad on a second listen. The beauty of the rocky beats and the iconic nature of the pixies make me rate this a bit lower but I will Keep listening
Angry. Good in parts Much more variation stylistically than many of the one dimensional albums in this list. However I don’t like some of the dimensions. When it works, you get a wall of innkvative sound production lyrics performance and soul. They have a lot to say and it might be better spread over 3 or 4 albums. A bit too Manchester too.
Enjoyed this much more than some of y’all reviews made me think I would - I think the good moments are really good, even if the lows are somewhat low.
Solid album with a unique sound. My two biggest gripes are that I feel like there are too many filler tracks, and I don't like the song order on the album. The Happening is a phenomenal song that in my opinion should end the album. Instead it's followed by a few throwaway tracks that kill the album's momentum. A shame, because a good album is still there. Top tracks: Ana, All Over the World, The Happening
Not Dolittle
This one didn't strike me the way Doolittle did/does. It's quintessential Pixies, so I'm a fan. But a bit more mid.
Taking me back to the 90s. Makes me think of patchouli oil and counter culture. Never a huge fan but this album hit me just right. it is very well done and enjoyable.
Fun alternative album.
There are awesome peaks (Happening, Blown Away), a lot of pointless filler (first and last song) and atrocities (Hang Wire). The most uneven of their original four full length albums and unfortunately a sign of things to come.
3.5/5 Beetje eentonig tbh
An OK album
Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are great albums. Bossanova is a good album. Come on Pilgrim and Trompe le Monde are okay. I don’t acknowledge the existence of anything else by this band. I love the Pixies but don’t think this is them at their best. There are still some great songs on here, but nothing that approaches the best songs on their first two albums. And the just-okay songs on Bossanova are way worse than the less good songs on Surfer Rose and Doolittle. Is Bossanova worth listening to? Yes. Is it a top tier Pixies album? For me, no. P.S. My cat’s favorite thing in the world is to roll around in my closet under shirts where she can bat at them and be partially hidden and rub against things while I pet her. When we are doing that I like to sing “Stormy Weather” to her, but I change the words to “It is time . . . it is time (whoah, oh) . . . it is time, for closet cuddles.”
Joe and Cameron dancing to “Velouria” by the Pixies in season 3 episode 9 of "Halt & Catch Fire" is all I have to say. The first choice, apparently, was Nirvana's Love Buzz. The replacement with its ethereal quality and a sense of longing expressed in captures the moment way better. I could listen to that song over and over again without getting sick.
Great album!
I kind of like Allison
Occasionally interesting, IMO.
I like the punk sound
Yeah this was alright, but didn't capture the same magic of the first couple Pixies albums in my opinion.
I love the pixies sound. Driving basslines, noisey guitars, and a singer I can't quite put my finger on. I felt this album was solid all the way through, but never hit highs that made it stand out.
There's some interesting stuff here, but it's not my cup of tea exactly.
Pixies are Happening. Album gets better as it progresses; starts with thrashy songs about wierd ex-girlfriends and peaks at Hang Wire. Liked it. (2.7*s)
First listen through a full Pixies album and it's ok enough. You hear people rave about them all the time so I had high expectations. I know some of their songs and do like their sound but this didn't move me like I wanted it to. The songs I know and like weren't on here but there were a few good ones I'd revisit. I think the album is good as a whole and better than a lot of other things that came out in the 90's. It's like experimental surf rock for people who wear jeans and black hoodies to the beach. I liked it just enough to be curious about another full album by them (which I'm sure will appear). They managed to age pretty gracefully, stay out of taglines, and are still somewhat relevant today so props on that. Go Beantown.
I have always heard people/critics say the Pixies are a hugely influential band and I can see how they contributed to the indy rock scene on this album. It has some good range and also sticks to their style. Not an epic, must own album but it has its place and I enjoyed.
Didn't think I would like this album when I began listening but as it progressed it got better. There were certain tracks that were a bit reminiscent of The Cure, a band I like but didn't have the distinctive vocals. This seemed to serve this opinion as my streaming service goes on to select similar genres when the album selector ends. In this case , Pictures of you was the first track selected when Bossanova finished. Not a bad judgement by me I thought 🙂. This album is worthy of 3 stars , would have given it more it it didn't go randomly into screechy vocals which are more akin to heavy metal
Was fine but did not stand out in my mind
Some hitting of some instruments
Way more into the singing than the screaming.
The very best
The start of this is so refreshing because of the recent albums. Second song is fucking awesome. Slowdive 's song about a girl with the name Allison is better. But, this one's still good too. It's a pretty straightforward good album. Sick guitar work and the vocals aren't too annoying. It's produced well too. The Happening sounds like a Big Black song (and I just checked: this isn't the Steve Albini / Pixies record) 3/5
Solid mix of songwriting, all gas no brakes
Not as obnoxious as their first album, but not as memorable either. I actually gave their first album a bad rating for being annoying, but it's starting to grow on me. This album is pretty mid.
Unmistakably The Pixies. Undeniably from the ‘90s.
If I was feeling a lot more aggressive when I listened I think it would have gotten a 4 from me, just wasn't the perfect mood for the time and place.
This was a solid album. I enjoyed it, and would maybe put it on again. 6/10
3.5 I was expecting to like this more than I did based on what I knew of the Pixies before starting this project. Very happy to have discovered Is She Weird but the back end of the album really dragged on.
A really good album! Solid, spiky, punky rock tunes with melody! It’s a real blast! Will definitely return to this one!
It wasn’t bad but I’m unlikely to go out of my way to listen to it again
Didn’t like it as much as I presumed considering the band’s near legendary status as grunge forefathers.
Actually a fun Pixies listen front to back
One of those albums where you don't really realize you're listening to it or that it has ended until a song comes on that is obviously not from the album.
Not their best work maybe.
It was uneventful. Ho hum and nothing exciting.
Another Pixies album? I like them, they are important but I'd say one was enough, and this one seems less vital and original than Surfer Rosa. Nothing much wrong with it, just seems like they are in their groove a bit here.
It was loud and the lyrics & music were just meh for me
Wonderful
Some good tracks on this one, album as a whole not as exciting as previous albums.
Not bad. Slap bang middle of the road for me. Some good tunes, some not so good tunes.
The only Pixies song I know is "Where Is My Mind." Cecilia Ann - fine Rock Music - wow that's some yellin'! More hard rock than I was expecting. Are they doing like, a song in every genre?
Was alright. I liked the previous Pixies album better. This one would be a middle of the road 2.5/5.
You can see where there is some really interesting composition, and there are a few songs that pulled me in pretty easily. However, the overall sound of the album starts to get a little monotonous, and there isn't as much variety in some of the song structures as I would like. I can't point to one "banger" on this album, so I can't really rate it too highly.
Gotta respect any band that is immediately identifiable by their sound and style, and Pixies are definitely that. Right down to the tinny lo-fi sound of the recordings and the alt-surf riffs. When I think of Frank Black I can’t not think of the best Bloodhound Gang lyric of all time: “I’m not black like Barry White, no I am white like Frank Black is”, although that has nothing to do with this album or review. This album is no Doolittle or Surfer Rosa though, which makes me wonder are those yet to come or did whoever made this list totally outthink themselves when it comes to Pixies albums?
While a bigger fan of Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, I think this album still paced well. It was nice to hear more melodies and tempos amongst songs and you can tell by this 3rd outing the band had really come into its own. They remain the kings of the loud-quiet-loud model for song crafting.
First time all the way through this one, didn’t love it and didn’t hate it. I think they’ve got some better stuff, but ultimately this is still pretty listenable.
This was hit or miss for me. 2.5 stars that will round up to 3.
I like the Pixies enough to own their greatest hits album, but not enough that I'll ever want to listen to any of their original albums. This was fine.
not too bad! I think Pixies should only have 1 album on the list, and this would be a solid submission.
pretty cool
Good rock and grunge sound. Easy to see the Nirvana comparrisons ( or Nirvana's to the Pixies).
Oddly enjoyed parts of this album
Pretty good album. I don’t think I’ll seek it out again, but I enjoyed it.
Not bad, but hardly their best work.
I don't care for this album. It's ok, but it's nothing I'd want to revist. 2.5 stars. Sorry, Pixies, you're not for me.
Not the best of the Pixie's albums, but it's still the Pixies. 3.5
It was good, nothing standing out too much.
This is what it sounds like when grunge is being born. This album was good - I liked Doolittle better. 3.3 stars
Not bad. Don't love the singer. If I liked him more, I,d give it another star.
Joa, war ok.
Hey this isn't bossanova music at all!
I really enjoy the opening track "Cecilia Ann". Getting screamed at next on "Rock Music" was less enjoyable. The rest of the album after that was fairly enjoyable. Maybe I am just getting old, but I have a hard time giving 4 stars to any album where I have to sit through screaming for a track or more. I though Surfer Rosa was a lot more enjoyable.
It's fine, inoffensive at best, mediocre at worst. 3/5.
This is easily the weakest of the “holy trinity” of Pixies albums. Bossanova has a much poppier sound than their other albums, which I mostly don’t love. It’s an interesting product of its time, with a grunge-pop rock hybrid, but it also feels much older since it consists of 14 songs for a total of 40 minutes (less than 3 minutes per song). This feels like the perfect dose; I think I would’ve gotten bored after an hour of this sound. I don’t think I’ve listened to this album in 10+ years and my meh-to-okay rating from then still holds up. I gave the same rating to other Pixies albums and I think I’ll definitely be re-assessing those assuming they come up within the 1001. I can’t imagine Bossanova is on the list without Doolittle or Surfer Rosa, but we’ll see.
could i write poetry to this? y
Probably my least favorite of the albums with the original lineup. Still a very good album, but lacking the hooks of the others. This is probably due to the pressures and challenges they encountered while recording it. I can definitely hear where the influence came from when Kurt Cobain called Nirvana a "Pixies cover band." Three and one-half stars. Dinged one half-star for not producing a "hit song."
Fun at times.
The first cursory listen was fun. A good vibe. A second, closer listen, paying attention to lyrics was less impressive.
It was okay.
The second song almost made me stop listening. 3.5
It wasn't what I expected. Worth a listen.
Чувствуется какой-то дроп по сравнению с первыми двумя альбомами. Вот вроде всё и ок, песни понятнее, а искр нет. Лучшая песня - Allison.
I like the Pixies but this one has always been the one I like the least from the classic era. There are some bangers and The Happening is one of my favourite Pixies track but the 3-4 last songs brings to the album down a bit. Also there's some kind of a morose vibe that I can't quite put my finger on it, I don't know if it's the production but this one's a little bit darker than the others but it makes them sound tired instead of heavy.
Pretty enjoyable album but unequal from start to finish. Would still recommend.
Some great songs, others I don't care about. The Pixies vibe is always cool for sure!
Ok
Varied and under explored on my end
Classic Pixies
Another album that shows how much a band took influences from before it and did something new with those sounds. What they did went on to influence many bands after. A kind of vector of music influence.
Influential but boring.
Did not like....hard rock mixed with bad vocals. Let's hope for better albums in the future!
Coming out the gates kicking! This album has some real punk rock n roll energy to it and they've done something unique here. "Is She Weird" is the first song that slows down the bpm and gives much needed pacing through the album as all high energy fast tracks can be a little dizzying. Marking the shift in tempo on the aforementioned track, the latter tracks of the record are more beach vibes and remind one of cruising down PCH or even along Vineyard or Bethel Rd in Templeton with the Tracker and wind whipping through the hair. Was slow for me to get into the first few tracks, but quickly warmed up to it and was pleasantly surprised. I hear notes of No Doubt, Red Hot Chilis, Sublime, Weezer, definitely leaning more SoCal vibes from their sound. Kinda grunge but more beach bonfire and skate park. Solid album, like their sound.
Triumphant! Productive! good working/ chore music! lol, this has nothing to do with bossanova
Start of the album was rough for me, very aggressive production, like songs were being on big mess, but after 3-4 songs it tones down. Honestly listening to this first time in 2024, i would give this 3/5, decent, but would i listen to it again, no. Favourite song(s): "All Over the World"
I didn't enjoy it as much as I "should". Good, not amazing.
Could not really get into this album, it was a struggle. Ana is very Stone Roses or Ian Brown type vibe (or the vice versa)
Not bad better then I thought it would be.
also ich mude drum nur kurze review ich finde gut aber nöd megakrassomgguet

Excellent introduction to early metal hard rock. However, I did not find myself getting lost in the music in a good way. But still exceeded expectations.
NOTES: Production is good, cleaner than Doolittle Vocals are less visceral than Doolittle Whole album is a bit less harsh Down to the Well guitar is CRUNCHY Hang Wire is cool REVIEW: While a good album, this is nowhere near as good as their last two efforts. Doolittle especially. The production being so clean does away with one of the reasons why I like their music to begin with. I absolutely love how harsh Doolittle is, and none of that really appears on Bossanova save for Down to the Well. On its own, however, it's good. Riffs are fun, the sound is good and it doesn't overstay its welcome. It's just a touch bland at times.
This was described as beautiful by some Celtics. It's not really though. It does have a couple good songs and the rest are pretty good. I can see how they were pre grunge.
Gran disco. La influencia de los Pixies en toda la música posterior es tremenda.
I liked this album much more than I was expecting, its first couple of tracks are a little intense, especially 'Rock Music', but then it settles into a cool alternate rock album. I know that there is a lot of fuss made about the Pixies and their influence on just about every band ever. Personally I don't see what all the fuss is about but they do have a couple of banger tracks!
Curioso
More good songs than bad and there are Pixies songs I prefer than the ones I recognized from this album. I wouldn't rush back to listen start to finish, but I may listen to one or two of these again in the future. 3/5
End of the album quite fun. Would listen to stormy weather again. Another band that has a distinct sound so it's hard to differentiate from some songs. Having only known one pixies song previously, I was surprised by how heavy some songs are. I would like to run to this album. 3/5
Some interesting stuff, but too much similar to the rest.
Meh
Easy enough listen.
Didn't get me like Doolittle does
3/5
It was an enjoyable Pixies album. Just enough umph to power through midmorning at work.
cecilia ann was just solid velouria kinda goes hard i'm like 4 songs in and can just tell this is another middling type of thing, nothing really bad or excessively abrasive, just kind bored and i think another case of people really fucking w this in 1990 i like all over the world yeah it was fine 3/5
This sent me down a Pixies rabbit hole, landing on Doolittle as my favorite. This one is good but not as
It was alright, not my cup of tea really.
Ach ja, nicht schlecht, aber irgendwie mag ich die Pixies nicht so richtig.
If, as I did, you bought "Surfer Rosa" and "Doolittle" when they were first released, then caught up with "Come On, Pilgrim", this album was disappointing; still clearly Pixies, but far more straight ahead and thus less interesting than their earlier work. Almost Pixies by numbers; still better than a lot of other contemporary "alternative" music, but never going to be my go to Pixies album. So I sold it.
I like the instrumental tracks the best. Havalina especially
We moeten streng blijven.
I'm learning I don't really love the 90s vibes, but this is a pretty good album. Don't really love anything, but it is pretty good.
This was definitely nostalgic for me. Some really good tunes here, and others that are less memorable.
Fun journey don nostalgia lane. I really enjoyed listening to this
Besides a couple of tracks (Is She Weird, The Happening), nothing else was really interesting enough to keep my attention. It all sounded like standard 90’s radio rock fare.

When I first bought this album it was a bit of a disappointment after the first two albums, which I loved. Hearing it again after over twenty years since I last listened to it, it's pretty much the same as I remembered. It's not a bad album, just not a great one, and the beginning of the decline in quality for the pixies in my opinion.
Idk. Didn't do anything for me but wasn't bad either

Trompe Le Monde and Surfer Rosa are the two Pixies albums I’m most familiar with but this is worth a listen too.
Pixies in some way should be a perfect band for me with their not-like-the-other-bands energy. Although I liked some of the songs here, sometimes the vocals bother me a lot. Just a personal preference.
Pixies are a bit hit and miss. I liked but and pieces but not the whole thing. Totally understand why they've stood the test of time though. Innovative
At times a bit too searing for me, but there are enough melodic moments and interesting songs to warrant a further listen down the road.
3.5-4 I was excited to listen to this album so close to Frank Black’s album. It was fun to compare the two and see where the Pixies begin and Frank ends. I liked the vibe of the album, but no song really stood out to me. The album felt cohesive, but to the point where I’m not sure I’d be able to distinguish the songs from each other and where each felt like a slight variation of another. It also felt like a Smashing Pumpkins album, but much more tolerable. I wanna listen to the album again to see if I missed something, but not necessarily anytime soon. Complete side note to disregard and really only meant to relieve my conscience: Alexander "Skip" Spence, I felt like I was making light of your mental illness, and please be assured I was not. (I’m talking to a dead person now, I guess.) It was more supposed to be gallows humor, punching neither up nor down but to the side. I didn’t know you had a drug problem and mental illness when I wrote my review, and I guess it speaks to how well you wrote your songs if I was able to label them depression-central without knowing they were, in fact, straight out of a depression. Still, I don’t know why your producer decided to make your experimentation an album… Anyway back to the Pixies. It was all right. I liked his solo album better and I like "Where is My Mind” so maybe I just need to listen to a different Pixies album.
3 starsish
Pretty good! Probably won't buy, but i really liked the first few tracks.

It’s the pixies
It was alright. I wasn’t Blown Away by it, but it was Rock Music. May have to listen to it again and Dig for Fire Down to the Well.
Mid
Didn't really stand out to me, but it intrigued me enough that I'll check out more of Pixies' stuff. I liked a few tracks.
A solid alt rock album by the Pixies, I could hear the 90s sound come right through the speakers, with the fuzzy electric guitars, garage sound coupled with a laid back beach/surfer vibe. A perfect album to chill out to sinking a few beers on a hot day, yet also perfect to rock out to. Best: Velouria Worst: Is She Weird 3.5 Stars
If I was in grade 9, this album would have been up my alley as I was in my grunge phase. Bands like Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, Melvin, and Nirvana were on rotation for me. But I never dove into the Pixies. Sure we've all heard Where Is My Mind? - and it's a great song! But those who've just heard that song, aren't getting the full Pixies picture. There music is a lot more diverse and thicker than that song. This album was that. Although, this type of music doesn't really do it for me now, 15 year old me was having a good time.
Quite enjoyable, not sure it if offered much in the 2nd half of the album though
A MUCH better album than Surfer Rosa in my opinion. I’m still not crazy for The Pixies, but a mid to high three for me.
I haven't fully understood the worship bestowed upon the Pixies by multiple generations, but I came closer to getting it after spending quality time with this album. It's weird, it's occasionally frightening, it's frequently gorgeous, and it consistently rocks hard.
