I love this album!!! Perfection

Love the sound!

Great album. Reminds me of Beck and Cake and bands like that. Kind of a hip hop delivery over indie rock music. Clever and entertaining songs.

Schandalig. 5 sterren van mij.

Head bop every song. Favourtie songs from the album are Baby's Got Sauce and Cold Beverage. The band has great pocket which makes each song fit so well

So funky! Always a great Summer album.

The drum sound earns this 5 stars automatically. But, something about it all reminded me off running around Galbadia in Final Fantasy 8. The cool upright bass sound. The rap is pretty 90s, I'll admit. 5 Stars.

A good one ngl

wow never heard of them, except for a section of a song that played in american dad?, and i fell in love in love with this band already, what a record the kind of unusual flows and the cadences are sustained by an outstanding rhythm section, you get tasty jazz progressions over heavy funky grooves on the drums, gotta point out also the guitar parts that perfectly serve the songs you could say it doesnt try to get very far away from a certain sound but man they nail it, everything sounds cool af

This probably doesn’t deserve five stars, but I dig this style so much that I don’t really care. I’m especially enamored with the kinda funky, kinda jazzy drums. Most anything with that backbone would be cool.

You know, I really do like cold beverages.

Buenísimo, me gustó mucho, no los había escuchado antes y me encantaron

Good things

Another I used to practice drum set to. Props to House Man

I remember this album from early high school.

Such light hearted musicality. I love when a talented group of musicians makes fun music like this. G. is a got dang treasure.

Another “not my favorite by this artist” that’s still really good

I used to love this album as a teenager. It’s unpopular in here but I believe it’s a unique sound in the same way as limp bizkit. I love the drum intro on eyes have miles, and the bass on blues music and walk to slide. Along with the vocal delivery and blues/jazz guitar I don’t think there is another album like this.

this guy is so random and i love it

Fuck yeah

What a cool slice of the 90's I have never heard of before. Enjoyed all of it and is a bit unique in this list and is a bit different probably makes it stand out from the crowd.

This was the first concert I ever went to as a teenager, just after this album came out. I probably have an irrational love for this album based on that, but I don’t really care - this is my list. Five stars.

Is this a five star album? Who knows. It's it one of my personal favorite albums of all time? Yes. I can remember the first time in college. Blew my mind. Many incredible nights were spent watching G and the boys. All started with this. A seminal 90s, slacker sound that was unique then and now. The first couple G albums were a revelation. Still play great.

Banger

Great album! Loved it since it came out.

Really funky, catchy and had me bopping away the whole time. Glad to hear jimmy jazz prescott on the bass won't be doing those things anymore too

4.5 - Okay this one really took me by surprise. No idea who they are but going to come back to for sure

An all time fave that stands up! An easy 5.

Still love this!

I truly like this album. I dig it

Phil Melillo

The Talk sing really works here. Wonderful listen

I wonder what the special sauce is.

18/03/25 I have never heard of them before and I enjoyed this album.

Love this dude

Really good album. Great find.

i REALLY like the instrumentals. not really a fan of the vocals but i can tolerate it. i will come back to this in the future. OH MY GOD I JUST READ THE GLOBAL REVIEWS YALL ARENT HEARING WHAT IM HEARING THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE

This opening track is amazing from the get go. I was familiar with the third album, but not this one. I really like this album.

Could I get a cold beverage? I need some leverage It's sweaty outside, some lemonade would be nice Or a Sprite from the drive-thru at B.K. Yo, I'll buy a girl a drink, but girl's got to pay On the front porch, yeah, I got some iced tea If you'd like a taste of tea, then come along with me Summertime is steamin', don't give me no bug juice Grab some ice and a dash of vermouth It's martini time, yeah, yeah, feeling golden Bring your own beverage, just make sure it's cold Enough said, really. This is a great album. 5/5

Very chill album, reminded me of Beck in the best ways

I really like this album! It's like bluesy hip-hop. The guitar is excellent

Loved this album! I'm not sure i ever listened to the whole thing...but wow...it was great!

At first I was annoyed this was the album I had for the day my twins were born because it was something I had never heard of and sampling it for a bit made it sound like something I would hate. But then I actually found two seconds out of my first week with the babies and relax to this album. It was actually really weird in the best way. Weird as in unique. I actually appreciated the weird inflections of some of the words being sung (said? Rapped?). I ended up enjoying every song on this album.

Very interesting, I dig it.

This was formative album for me. It stands on its own but I also appreciate it since it got me curious about other blues and New Orleans influenced music. What a generational icon for the Philly area too

Pure vibes

I just totally love this, it's so musical. Saw G. Love perform the whole album last year, still accompanied by the Special Sauce. It was amazing.

Another great find through this project. I have never heard of this group but the record was just so good! Thanks for showing it to me.

I was not familiar with this album, but it is my kind of jam.

I’d give this a 5+. Awesome album. Loved the rhythm and the bass all the way through.

G. Love! One of the coolest sounds ever made.

Blues + hiphop/rap is an amazing combination which comes out perfect on this album. Never heard of them or any of the songs but I enjoyed every song. It’s not perfect so I would say 4.8/5 but since that’s not possible I’ll give it 5 stars. Favourite songs: - Blues music - Baby’s got sauce - Shooting hoops

5 stars, funky and fresh.

Surprisingly enjoyable. His voice wasn't the best, but the music was great.

Loved this album, never heard of them before

Very much and album of its time. The Slacker blues-jazz meets hip hop sloppy sound seems to have hit an epoch in '94 with similar sounding Beck and Bran Van 3000 popping up independently at the same time. I forgot how much I loved this post grunge break from seriousness

Still a banger

One of my favorite albums and artists of all time. Such a phenomenally talented musician.

Throughly enjoyed this one

LOVE it

5/5 Ska-ey and hip hop-ey, love it

9/10 crazy good, like beastie boys meets bob dylan

Oh hell yeah dog this is what I'm talking about. A great example of a band that make being tight as fuck seem laid back and effortless. His voice is something else too. The whole thing exudes cool. I'm always trying to figure out what my definition of cool is, and this fits what ever that definition is. It feels like they hit something very special that so many 90s bands either totally overshot or way undercooked. Other bands who hit the same mark: Sublime, President of the United States of America, Beastie Boys... I sense a playlist coming on.

Fun album

loved this

Never heard of this band or album but I very much enjoyed it!

Bien aimé! Groovy et laid back

It has a semi-familiar rhythm to it that I’m not sure if I specifically like or just remember fondly from that time, but either way I liked it.

A total surprise to me that this album made the list- but I absolutely love it. This captures such a real and authentic take on the time and place this was made. The DIY blend of genres and influences come together into something incredibly genuine. If you don't appreciate G Love I don't think I want to go to your party...

In 2008 I bought tickets to a G Love & Special Sauce show mainly because I wanted to see the opening act, the John Butler Trio. I had absolutely no idea who G Love was at the time. Almost 20 years later and I honestly remember very little of that show. I do remember enjoying the show enough that I found a copy of this album and listened to it quite a few times afterwards, but neither G Love nor John Butler have remained in my listening rotation. For some reason, I wasn't really expecting this album to hold up after all these years, but I actually really enjoyed listening to it again today. I get how some people would dislike it, but I really enjoy their blend of laid back, spoken word hip-hop over blues riffs and jazzy drums. It does lose a bit of steam in the last few tracks, though. Overall, is it a masterpiece? No, but is it a fun listen? Absolutely!

I liked this much, much better than I thought I would!

A form of hip hop that to me sounds like a proto-gorillaz or early beck with blues guitars. The layd-back vocals really fit the bouncy guitars and double bass layering. A pleasant surprise.

This is pretty awesome and kind of something that doesn't get done anymore. I think there was a moment in the 90s where this was ripped off just enough that it kind of became a meme of itself. Kid Rock kind of appropriated some music like this, which is a shame, because there are so many layers and elements to this sound. Obviously, the blues and stoner rock layers, but the laid back hip hop grooves are really cool. Its super unique and really easy to just kind of live in. I wish there were some more contemporary artists like this. I really liked this today.

Your baby ain't sweet like mine!

I had no idea what this album was going to be but I liked it alot. Four stars

A cool mix of funk, rock, and maybe hip hop? I enjoyed what this was.

Such a unique sound that came out during a time that was in dire need of unique sounds.

Very cool. Sounds like it was recorded in their garage, but in a good way.

Is it cheesy? Yes. Do I like it? Also yes.

i can say that this is an album that falls on a personal category of mine: foodie albums. Albums that relate to food in some songs, but not only that: albums that have the feeling, the sensation, the hedonistic persuasion, the pleasure transmitted, that you get when eating a good food. Sonically is like that. This album sounds exactly as the internet says about this band: sloppy, bassy, relaxed, chill, like that cool friend that has drugs, a place to chill and smells a bit bad. In that sense, i find this band a great surprise, a likable band under my sensibilities. But, if i must say, a problem, is that i find to some point, the song blend between them due to the overall vibe of the album. And if you don't like one, you will probably hate the rest.

A lot of emotion tied up in this one. I saw G Love at the Riv in Chicago on Halloween in 2001. Felt like the world was coming apart, I walked in and heard Mike Doughty playing songs from Skittish - I love Soul Coughing - and then this crazy fun show with the band dressed like pimps. I get that this isn't for everyone but it really takes me back. Listened to the live set today, so cool.

This great record sounds like so much other mid-90s music -- Beck, Sublime, even a little Beastie Boys -- but somehow remains distinctive, with its fusion of blues into all those other genres. And it still sound fresh, despite being so utterly 90s.

They don’t move much out of the groove they built for themselves, but they really do make blues-rap rather funky.

Ok so I literally thought of this album cover this evening. what... You could draw a line from blues to hip hop and this record does its best to merge two of these forms together. I like the result; as if 60s blues rock was sampled. Lyrics are 🌽 but at least G. Love’s committed to the vibe. (3.5-4)

Really enjoyed the funky beat, and the hiphop vocals suited the music perfectly. Really nice listen

this album had some style i really liked it, it’s got sauce

Brings to my mind hot city days/nights. Something summery sounding to me despite the heavy percussive sound. Stand out songs for me are “Town to Town,” and, of course, “Cold Beverage.” My am streaming service included bonus songs m. Really like “Move Me.”

Gran sonido. Disfrutable.

Wow for want of a better word, this funky bluesy rappy 90s treat just feels cool.

Was this a "good" album? No. Did I have a good time with it anyway? Weirdly, yes.

I DO like cold beverages! I like Beck, but he may owe G a little dough.

first listen there's a beautiful feel-good simplicity to this i like

This is very reminiscent of the beastie boys to me even though maybe it's not so loud. It also seems like the type of music my dad would have listened to back in the day in high school or in his early twenties. This is in a good way.

Ah. Grew up with this record. Some really good tracks on here. Some that sound really the same. The last 3 are tough and it should have been over by then. This is really raw G. LOVE. for people who dont love this, maybe try his later stuff. Its more accessible and probably more enjoyable

Pretty interesting!

Has a nice vibe and really deep feeling in some songs. I liked the contrast between the faster and slower songs. Many diverent genres in that one album.

A less aggressive Sublime

Really vibing with this album. Not my usual style but the vocals just elevate it.

Any album on the 1001 albums you should listen to before you die list that mentions Wawa gets an extra star. Favorites include “Cold Beverages”, of course.

This album had sauce. 3.8/5

Enjoyed the grooves. Very chill album.

Without listening yet. This is 4 stars of nostalgia for me. It might not be empirically good, but I loved this album back in the day.

Had the SAUCE

Groovy hiphoppy. Liked this one.

I liked this album, I like how it mixes genres. The first two songs seem especially good to me

This is really interesting. Stoner rap over blues and even sometimes jazz instrumentals. Honestly really creative and interesting. I liked this alot and i could see myself putting this on when I feel like chillin. Reminds me of Sublime, but less California themed.

What your playlist needs to go from RATM to Sublime and Beck in record time

Funky and fun. Soooo 90’s

I don't get the hate for this one. It's pretty fun, sort of like a more hip-hop/blues Soul Coughing? The "sloppy" term is kind of unfortunate. The guy is purposely delivering behind the beat, on purpose. The band is tight and the groove is real.

Never heard of this group but I enjoyed the album. Sometimes sounded like Cage the Elephant, I'll check out more of their stuff.

I had only heard of this band by name before this listen and I have to say this was quite a surprise. I like just about everything from the 90s but was genuinely shocked at how much I liked this album. First album on this journey where I added a new song to my personal playlists and on this album I added two. (Cold Beverage and Babys Got Sauce). Great album. I'm sorry I ever doubted it and avoided it for so long.

Weed Love And Weed Sauce. 4/5

Gorgeous - 90s bluesy hip hop, really liked this. It's feels equal marts mature and juvenile, really complex.

- It's too easy to go after these guys for some of you; it was 1994, it was a breath of fresh air with a stand-up bass. This one holds up and certainly makes the list. It's not perfect but it's pretty damn good. -

This record came out the summer of my senior year in HS, back when you put a CD in the player and listened to it start to finish. I have fond memories of GLove’s funky beats. This was a fun one to listen.

Listened Before? N I've heard of these dudes but never listened. This was a cool laid-back nostalgia trip. I really enjoyed it. I see why it was popular with college kids in the 90s. There probably wasn't anything else like it. Cold Beverage rules. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Cold Beverage

Pretty nice rock

I hadn't heard this before. I enjoyed it

Sounds 90s, beck and butthole surfers with some jazz. Like the vibe, got kind of repetitive

Pretty good - Casey would love this I reckon, sounds a bit Sublimey

Hasn't held up quite as well as I thought it would since I was 17, but still some jams.

Interesting album. This is the type of thing I look to this list for. Genre-mashed good vibe albums that I would never discover on my own. It had a slacker feel, almost like a Beck precursor

This exceeded by expectations and indeed had a little special sauce to it. Although it may have got a little redundant at times, I thought the album had a pretty cool vibe to it; a mixture of blues, funk, and early hip-hop. Top tracks: Garbage Man, Baby's Got Sauce, Cold Beverage

I liked it.

Was ok

All together, a good listen. At times, sounds like beatnik poetry slams. Not dance music, but there’s some rhythm and rhyme a happenin.

This made my eyes roll to the back of my head in pleasure. I like it not only because it mixes hip hop with soul and rock, but because the rap lyrics are more than what usually puts me off hip hop. Instead of the vapid lyrics about money and fame and women and getting your cock sucked and how rough your life has been and how great you are for surviving it and all that crap, it’s more from the heart, it’s passionate but in a cool way. And I bloody love it.

Nostalgia probably bumps this from a 3 to 4 stars. Honestly had no idea this came out in ‘94. All the kids from “outside Philly” would play this all the time when I was in college in the late aughts.

Very cool day driving album

I'd never heard that before. I really enjoyed it.

Definitiv eine Entdeckung. Auffällige aber nahbare Gitarrenarbeit!

Just the thing to fill that space on my shelf between Beck, Cage The Elephant and the Fun loving criminals. Of it's time, and I know I've been played, but had me hooked. Enjoyed that and will go back to listen again

Kind of a wild album. Is this rap? Scatting? Something in between? I can't picture the guy singing this. Gonna have to find a music video. He sounds like he's blazed out of his mind on every track freestyling stuff that doesn't even make sense. The songs are groovy as hell though. Mostly jam tracks. I never heard of these guys back in the day. Might listen to this again though, it's cool, even if a little weird. 4/5

I know of this artist, have an idea of what they sound like but never truly listened to their stuff. Interested to check this out. Not really what I was expecting so far. This is better than I initially had an idea of. Very cool stuff.

Þetta er ástæðan fyrir að ég er að gera þessa snilld! Hefði aldrei hlustað á þessa weird ass töff plötu annars

Great grooves fun ablum

I have a soft spot for this album. It was there in late high-school / early college, and a bunch of my friends were into it. I think it has a really good groove and kind of a unique mix of bluesy-rap over live instruments. It's more about the general sound than about specific hooks. I'm teetering between 3 and 4, but feeling generous today.

My rating is largely a by product of nostalgia for a time period and a friend now long gone. But, I do think that early-20s me liked this more than late-40s me. What once seemed like a novel blending of genres now feels like a fusion restaurant where the dishes aren't as good as their inspiration and influences.

Is this album "notable" enough to warrant inclusion on the list? I don't know, but I really dig the sound and the interesting mix of blues with the more hip-hop/soul feel.

So chill, love bopping along to this stuff. All day long.. very good vibe.

Really enjoyed this!

This one came out of nowhere for me, a lovely fusion of blues, rock and hip-hop. Great stuff!

Pre-trip hop blues meets hip hop at a family BBQ. I loved the summer vibes and the absence of hos, violence and dollar dollar bills y'all.

head bobbing and groovy! reminded me soo much of soul coughing they must know about each other

Why have I missed this band? What a great sound, and that drummer brings it all together

really liked this, super chilled with interesting instrumental work, will give it another listen

think I want to come back to this. Love the grooves, had to warm up to the vocals but they grew on me i think

Interesting. 3.5/5

Shit the intro to the first track is fire. Very jazzy. Ha! diggin this album. It's funky! That was fun. 4 stars.

Fun style. Feels like some guys with blues foundations wanted to follow the Beastie Boys

Loved it! I really enjoyed it. 4

Listens: 2 (with more on the way.) Standout tracks: Blues Music, probably others Added to Library: TRUE I have never heard of this band before, though maybe I have heard at least one of their tracks on the radio before (without ever having known who I was listening to), but I digress... Anyways, judging a book by its (album) cover (and the artist name too), I thought I was in for a seriously awful Saturday music listening session. You could hear my eyes rolling into the back of my skull. Visceral-like reaction to a band named G. Love & Special Sauce. I thought I was going to be hearing some electronica music even worse than Fat Boy Slim or J Cole. So imagine my surprise when not only are these guys palatable, but I actually seriously enjoy what they're putting out for a debut album! I hear Beck. I hear Sublime, I hear proto-Cage The Elephant. I hear good bass lines, good drums, good lyrics and good rhyming. I am exceptionally happy I had the opportunity to discover these guys.

vier bis fünf

Pretty good solid album. Don't have much to say honestly except for that.

This really should not work for almost a full hour, but it really does! Fun record where it's easy to get lost in the beats and the overall slacker vibe.

fell asleep half way through the album - loved it that much. Love how easy it is to just vibe to

I enjoyed the vibe of this. Sort of Gorillas, Cake, funky rap. Very unique, interesting, and well done overall.

Had no idea what to expect, album had a Fun Lovin’ Criminals vibe. I enjoyed it

Surprised how much I dig it

This is a hit. Big fan here, glad I heard it

Sloppy silly and fun. Really unique and enjoyable sound.

Another album I forgot was an album of the day because of the similarities to my regular scheduled listening.

This band is like Dollar Store Beck. This is the kind of blues rock pseudo hip hop music that could be found on every university radio station ever in the 90's/00's. That's not to say that it is necessarily bad, just mediocre at best. Do I need to listen to this album before I croak.... No. Has this sound been done hundreds of times before by more qualified acts.... Yes. Am I angry that I listened to this... Not necessarily, but it doesn't belong on this list, that's for sure G. Love should have stopped the record around the 40 minute mark.... The last three songs on the record aren't great, but the rest of the album isn't terrible. Favourite songs: Cold Beverage, Garbage Man, Fatman, Blues Music, This Ain't Living, Eyes Have Miles, Shooting Hoops, Baby's Got Sauce Least favourite songs: Some Peoples Like That, Town to Town, I Love You 4/5

Cooler Rap mit grossartiger Percussion

There's nothing intellectual in this at all, but I really enjoyed it and it's a fun listen

A surprise but not surprising. Brings me back to my jack johnson days

After reading the reviews I wasn’t expecting much but I REALLY liked this. It reminded me of a summer afternoon. Maybe it’s the gen x in me but excellent album.

It's a fun blues album that doesn't take itself too seriously. I like it.

Funky af

Heard before

The drums are awesome. A mix of The White Stripes and Sublime.

Rating: 7.5/10 A unique mix of hip-hop, blues, and rock that definitely got back later into the album.

Ah that was a great Summer. Great album.,

I've never heard anything like this and I'll have to come back to it

Its like Sublime and Amy Winehouse smashed together but with extra blues. I wasn’t in college in 90s but I can only imagine this was everywhere. If in the mood for 90s this 100% has a place in the playlist. 7/10

I love G. Love and Special Sauce! It's a cool modern take on blues music. But despite loving it so much, it seems out of place on this list.

3.5 Love the laid back atmosphere and groove on this album. It had been years since I've listened to it. Don't get all the harsh reviews. I like cold beverages too! 🍻

Not bad actually. Pleasantly surprised. Super listenable. Not a single skip and a lot of songs I really like including Baby’s Got Sauce. Rap infused with a groovy beat poetry sound.

So chill, love it.

Really liked!

I have never really paid much attention to this band, despite having heard of them. I really liked the three piece / trio arrangement in the band, and I REALLY enjoyed listening to the bassist and drummer who are obviously jazz musicians play a unique take on... whatever you call this. I was surprised I liked this as much as I did. I'll for sure add this album and more from the band to my own collection

Honestly pretty interesting and unique.

One is always surprised to enjoy this as much as one does, but it's critical to remember that this came out long before a bunch of tiresome adjacent acts (from the White Stripes to Jack Johnson to white rappers generally) embraced this for inspiration. This was early in the DIY revolution, which one didn't necessarily love, given one's trust in experts generally. Not terrible, but will get increasingly less above average as time goes by, one fears.

On the first bars of the first track I was prepared to write off this album as a dismal mess. However - there's something about it that seems to come from nowhere. I'm not sure I could describe it as good as much as compelling. It makes you want to hear more, see where it's going to next. I should probably come back to this at a later date and give it another go. There is an obvious love shown for the influences here, in a way that almost makes you think that the G is short for "genuine"..

I can't believe all the low ratings for this album. This is really a gem. Unique style and just a fun time. Nothing too deep, just singing about stuff he likes: Blues Music, Cold Beverage, Shooting Hoops, etc. No need to think too hard about it, just bob your head and enjoy.

Never heard of this before but I actually like it! Sounds like a mixture of RHCP & White Stripes.

Simpatico, buon sottofondo 3.5

A bluesy, folk melange withg a touch of hip hop on top.

awesome stuff

Did not know them. They are chilled, imprecise but in a way that it works. I like a lot how the drums are mixed. Haha, that snare …

I'll admit total bias. I lived in Cambridge MA for a while and used to go to the Plough and Stars, a local watering hole, and these guys played in the area quite a bit, would hang out at the bar before and after their sets. Fun music, great people.

It is a laid-back, funky blend of blues, hip-hop, and rock. G. Love's soulful vocals and harmonica playing blend perfectly with the band's infectious grooves. While the album's casual vibe might not be for everyone, it's a perfect soundtrack for a relaxed summer day.

This was an interesting listen. Definitely a weird amalgam of blues and hip-hop, but it really clicked with me. 4/5!

I enjoyed this more than I did back in the 90's

This was a really cool blend of a couple styles, and was pretty different to any album I've heard before. I probably wouldn't choose to listen to this again, but I enjoyed it while it was on.

I know this album is probably not objectively great, but it has a very soft spot in my heart because I listen to G. Love and Special Sauce obsessively when I was a teenager.

catchy! 4s? Reminds me a lot of jack johnson.

I like it, some Beasty Boys vibes, rythm section is amazing and grooves like crazy. Nice blend of blues and rap.

Actually kinda dope

wow that snare tone is CAVERENOUS on the Opening track.

Straight ahead blues with a bit of 90s in there

Great album. Very creative in its songs.

The Beckstie Boys.

A cool one! Just a really cool vibe with the straight funk mixed with rap aesthetics. Wouldn't mind coming back to it tbh. 7/10

I’d heard of them but never listened to them. I really enjoyed it. Although it’s dated and might be considered appropriate now, it’s funky and fun, much like the Fun Lovin Criminals, who I love.

G. Love and Special Sauce is the debut album by G. Love & Special Sauce, originally released in 1994. A lot of people are probably wondering why this record is included on this list. I'm a Philly native and these guys are huge here. I wasn't alive in the 90s but my parents played this record constantly. It was/still is all over the radio too. G. Love really kinda made his own sound. Huge slacker vibes with a bit of dub influence? Sometimes blues, sometimes jazz, sometimes indie. I really love how eclectic his style is. Reminds me a bit of Beck but not as weird. I don't know too much about his fanbase but I feel like a lot of the stoner/jam band Phish heads would love this band. Super fun album.

Chill 🔥slaps mellow throughout

Groovy with a bit of a Sublime/311-esque vocal flow. Love the instrumentals. 4.5

Not what I expected after 30 years of knowing the name but not taking steps to listen to GL&SS. A nice low-key vibe that is more stripped down than Fun Lovin' Criminals. I'll now dive deeper into this, kind of the point of this whole project.

enjoyed this way more than I thought I would

Really enjoyed the funk and blues feel here. Fun album

not at all what I was expecting, but rather enjoyed it.

I've never heard of G. Love and Special Sauce. This was entertaining enough. I'm not sure though about their controversial take on Cold Beverages.

I recognized the group name when this appeared and much to my surprise found this album already in my music collection along with three other albums from G. Love and Special Sauce. This came from the early 2000s when I ripped my and my boyfriend’s music collection in the move to digital. Once I was listening to this I did recognize a lot of it. I never really got into this group but I do appreciate the sound.

Garbage Man // Eyes Have Miles //

Very funky, down and dirty in Philly. Not an artist I had heard of before, but one I certainly enjoyed. A clear influence, in my mind at least, on Fun Lovin Criminals and Cage the Elephant, and a few others who fused rock, funk and rap-sung vocals. A cracker

I thought this was quite enjoyable!

Pretty incredible stuff. I'm uncertain how this passed me by in the 90's; I must have been too wrapped up in the Seattle sound. Very reminiscent of Beck, but in a less organized, more "dirty" way.

Reminded me of a british sublime

This is nice.

Great unplugged-indie sound. Did not know the band and it is definitely a great discovery and addition to my playlist.

I never heard of these guys but I actually really liked the album. Drummer was great and unique guitar almost like a mix between black keys, cake, and cage the elephant plus toned down rap/talking vocals.

The music itself is good. Good bluesy sound mixed with a blend of blues and hip-hoppy vocals. A lot of the songs sounded the same, however, which made it feel repetitive at some points. Overall good album, though.

Liked this a lot. Chill out jammy rock sounds, hip hop style lyrics. Very understated.

Need a nice Cold Beverage for when I listen to this one while I’m driving from Town to Town.

Fun, funky album.

Take either the voice or melody away and you have crap. Perfect combination.

Heavy dose of nostalgia with this one. Great fun

That’s a fun listen

Not bad.

This is so unique and only possible in the 90’s

pretty solid makes good use of dynamics, mixing and mastering are pretty solid. I enjoyed the mixture of the rap vocals over blusier elements. overall pretty good would recommend to fans of incubus

Koste meg

Mycket bättre än det borde vara

90s sloppy Philly hip-hop, what's not to love?

A catchy fun album that grows on you! I’m glad it was on the list!

Love the funky music

This album was played by my friends so much in the 90's I never needed to own it. At the time of release it was nice blend of genres and with some unique production, perhaps it sounds dated now. Blues Music sits on a few of my playlists but it's an album I don't every listen too. 3.5 for me but given he was raised in Philly that's enough to bump it to a 4.

Just plain basic funk. Who doesn't love this?

Good shit. I especially like the song about beverages.

I got to see G Love once. When this album broke so it has a lot of sentimental value to me. Great record

Brings back some fantastic memories. A place I used to work played this all if the time - especially 'Baby's got sauce'. Beautiful oddities the sounds created on this. Inventive and quirky. Well worth a listen.

really of the time.... gets a bit old

Lots of great jams but a bit long in my opinion.

I had never heard this before, but I enjoyed. I’d say 3.5 stars

It sounds like a super fun bar band, one you're not expecting when you go out, but aren't upset about listening to while you're enjoying your time. It runs a bit long, but I enjoyed the loose, sounds-very-unpracticed-but-is-really-probably-super-practiced style. It runs a little long, but call it a 3.5, bumping up because Philly, baby. Favorite tracks: "She's Got Sauce", "Cold Beverage"

I hadn’t heard of this band. They sound like a really tight local band that holds the Saturday night residency at the coolest bar in town.

took me back to being in college

Funky Rock, macht sehr viel Spaß

There are many blues appendices in Anglo music, skirting genres longer-lived in this universe. G. Love and Special Sauce becomes ever so slightly caricatured near the end, but the bass puts on a strong anchoring performance, liveness to balance the hip-hop swirling. Slack, stoned, on the nose: The shtick works at least once.

This thing fucking slaps. MAYBE IT'S THE SPECIAL SAUCE. It's gotta be the special sauce. I'm not so sure that I'd call what this dude does "rapping". He reminds me of a local band I saw in Nebraska of all places where they did Whole Lotta Love mixed with a lot of vocals similar to what G. Love is doing here. If he took off his shirt and wore a sock on his dick, he would have been bigger than Anthony Keidis.

perfect barbequeing music I love it 4.5 tbh

was expecting something like Vanilla Ice, but not that definitely a nice surprise

Seeing G. Love & Special Sauce at Metropolis Festival in 1994 was such a treat. That is why I always get in a state of absolute happiness when listening to this album. Great laidback groovy blues with rap that sound to be born to be combined.

I was really into this. Maybe it's not for everybody, but it has its own style which I enjoyed. Certainly has 90s sounds, but I don't mind that here.

Oh wow, why have I never heard of this before? First song it’s on for an easy 5 stars. Laid back jazzy white boy hiphop. But it got old real quick, very little variation throughout the album drags it down to a 4. Super interesting to hear that this predated Beck and Fun Loving Criminals by a good few years through

I really enjoyed this a lot. Not sure if I’d listen to the whole album again but it was super cool

my levels of confusion here are through the roof. he's fucking insufferable with his whiteboy funk/rap shtick. But... for some reason i really enjoyed it. The rhythm section is really strong and give him his dues, he's pretty good on guitar and it all works together with his street lazy singing thing. i also love the really tight band that sounds sloppy thing. every problem i have with this band is his accent/ way of singing. Is this just what Philadelphia is like? everything i've heard of the place is that it's full of not rights.

I enjoyed this, Tessa and I used to listen to a lot of G love. In the early 2ks.

Huh. This band slipped under the radar - it’s the right era, and right genre but I had never come across them. Growing up I’d have loved them - a bit of Beastie Boys, Sublime and a mellow JSBX - and the accent somehow is both grating and refreshing. Now I’ve kind of moved on from this blues / funk thing but still an interesting find for me.

great album, unique with some funk, rock, r&b

This is my first encounter with this type of music, and to my surprise, it's not bad.

Digging it. 4 stars.

Blues y hip-hop, una mezcla curiosa. Venga, un 4 por lo original.

Funky. Raw vocals. Favorite tracks: Baby's Got Sauce

Blues y hip-hop, una mezcla curiosa. Venga, un 4 por lo original.

This was an interesting one. It's astonishing by how much rap music can be improved if you take out the cringey, forced toughness/gangsterism/toxicity. Still not sure if it can actually be called rap, but since I usually don't like rap, pushing the genre boundaries seems like a good thing to me. Rounded up from 3.5

This takes me back. "Baby's Got Sauce," "Cold Beverages," "Rhyme for the Summertime"... So much to love here.

Niiiice! Didn't get introduced to this album till about 1997 or 98 but listened to this a lot in college. I've seen G Love in concert a couple times. He's still great

Fun, Unique.

This dude's voice is hilarious, I love the way he says "sauce"

I listened to this a lot and I mean a lot……in the mid to late nineties. Haven't listened to it much lately. The authenticity of his blues music (meaning he grew up in private school and dropped out of Skidmore) is a bit suspect - I have always liked the pace and rhythm of his music. It evokes memories of drinking a cold beer on a hot, muggy porch in central Indiana trying not to do anything to important that day.....

Another album that was ok. Wasn't bad but wouldn't listen to it again.

White boy funk and swagger

If I opened the CaseLogic CD case in your car in 2002 and saw the whole Sublime discography, I know this CD was right there behind it. Maybe even that Fun Lovin’ Criminals CD too. You’d probably go on to tell me about how your stoner older cousin, or your middle-school best friend’s older brother, turned you on to them and how it reminds you of fun times like [insert story here about smoking weed in someone’s basement in middle school]. I love that for you, but let’s move on, yeah? …Or maybe I’m just assuming all Sublime/G. Love fans are just like my highschool girlfriend. Anyway, I don’t think we need Sublime, G. Love, AND Fun Lovin’ Criminals on this list. Certainly, if there’s a fourth thing, we don’t all need to hear that one before we die. It feels like a whole lot of investment in a niche corner of the music world that most people really shouldn’t have to make. Maybe let’s all listen to August And Everything After by Counting Crows instead, and contemplate what that says about the monoculture and life in the mid-90s.

Back when we thought that Beastie Boys' Check Your Head was a revolution in sound, GL & SS seemed like obvious descendants, alongside bands like Luscious Jackson. However, they didn't have the songwriting skills necessary to sustain my interest beyond one side or so. Cold Beverages, Baby's Got Sauce, Things That I Used to Do, and Blues Music are the only tunes on here worth listening to, unfortunately.

Although I'm sorry we didn't get their later "Philadelphonic" as the lone G. Love (and Special Sauce) album, I definitely enjoyed the chance to supplement my G. Love familiarity (through "Philadelphonic" and one of his solo albums "The Hustle") with their new-to-me debut album. This one is definitely a bit rougher around the edges than later albums, but it still has what seems to be their signature jam session sound with great-but-sloppy lyrics; I'm always reminded of a weird cross between Beck, Beastie Boys and Fun Lovin' Criminals (plus a little Soul Coughing). I can see why "Baby's got sauce" and "Cold beverage" got a lot of (college) radio airplay, but the remainder is also a fun listen. True, there's not a lot of variety on this too-long album, but I've always appreciated it that they seem to know where their strengths are, and they stick to it.

Fun, but kinda dumb. You know, musically, these guys are pretty good. The jams are there. The drums and guitar are pretty tight. They're good together. G. Love needs to ease off the weed, though, because the whole thing with his delivery feels like you got a guitarist that worked on a groove for three hours, played it once for the guys, and G. Love stands up with a mic and says "Hey, y'all, check this..." with no engineering and freestyles the whole thing. I mean, there's a whole song about basketball that feels like four dudes playing in the driveway. I kept expecting to hear him take a pull off a joint right before starting to "sing" on each track. I'm not opposed to musicians using chemicals, I'm opposed to chemicals writing the entire album. Not really my bag, but it's not horrible. My Rating: 3/5

You know what, this was alright.

I didn't mind most of this

Rap blues rokkia...? Parhaat: Walk To Slide, Garbage Man, Fatman
