C'était correct mais meh en même temps.
Loud and jangly. Answers the question, "Mommy, where does Sleater-Kinney come from?" For me, pretty unpleasant. Unexpected bangers: Since it's not on Spotify, I don't have tracks and sounds lined up, I guess America or Fear.
It was an absolutely great discovery! I think it was the first time I thought an album was not long enough. I wanted more.
throwing muses' first self-titled album is definitely unique to this list. in all of the various punk subgenres, there's such a domination of men. but throwing muses lets you know within the first minute that they're (mostly) women in the post punk space! and, respectfully, the vocals are not good, which seems even more punk. how many times have we let bad male vocalists slide in punk? so--i appreciated this inclusion, but i wasn't that into the album.
Note: I had to go to YouTube to find this. Also, Throwing Muses has a newer album ALSO titled Throwing Muses (2003). It is not the same as their debut album titled Throwing Muses (1986). Confusing, I know. Now that said, I was actually pleasantly surprised by this album. The music is absolutely very post-punk with surprising, zany elements, and I definitely got post-punk Siouxsie Sioux and even Kate Bush from this with the particular style of vocalization. I can even hear what may have served as inspiration for Courtney Love in Hole, too. In any case, I love these female driven punky sounds, so needless to say, this combination found on this album strikes a specific niche I have for music, making me really dig this. Does this album need to be on this project? I don't really feel like it does, no. But I won't look a gift album in the mouth.
It’s pretty cool but just not my thing. Deffo would have been all over this as a teenager.
These ladies know how to rock! I enjoyed the album we accidentally listened to a bit more than the one we were supposed to, but overall a pleasant surprise for our first female artist(s) of this musical journey
I really enjoyed this, it has a sort of new wave/punk vibe to it but with dynamic songs. Favorites- Green, Stand up. 4*
Good, not great. Sometimes it sounded like a gothy version of PJ Harvey, other times it sounded like PJ Harvey playing Martha Wainwright
This was better than I expected!
A few solid tracks within the album, nice sounding, but the overall product seems a little disjointed. The post-punk and more eclectics moments are great, but the more folkish songs didn't do it for me. Loved the energy and conviction this band and the singer got, tho.

Difficult album to find streaming. I hope I picked the right one on YouTube. That said, feels appropriate to hear this album after the year boygenius had. Post-punk energy, howling passionate vocals. Tidy song writing. The original album I listened to was a later TM album and it suffered from what this had in abundance: energy and tight songwriting. Wish it was easier to hear this album
Not that well acclaimed I would guess as I could only find it on YouTube cobbled together as someone's obsessive project of an album. Nonetheless, it was pretty wild and interesting and as one commenter mentioned so before its time. Glade I heard it, liked the vocals, but not dipping my toes back in any time soon.
Who says compilation albums don't belong on 1001? "Throwing" it out there, that the Spotify button doesn't work on this album. Well, it works but sends you to a compilation album called Doghouse and not the album above. What's more is that the album the button sends you to an album that's. been REMOVED from Spotify. Moving on you search and find it on YouTube and listen to the full hour and 41 mins. and come back to submit your review ... OF THE WRONG ALBUM!!! Honestly, that was okay by me, I did find Throwing Muses by Throwing Muses on Spotify and got to listen to more of this amazing band. Great stuff that took me back to my east coast college days. ... BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE... ! Throwing Muses is touring again and I'm going to see them... Well, maybe if I can find the $$ and time to drive 2 hours south...
The fact that I had to hunt on YouTube for Throwing Muses’ debut is fitting, considering it comes from a gap in my music knowledge. I just barely missed out on the alternative and indie rock of the late 80s, only catching up on bits of it much later. I didn’t discover Violent Femmes until the mid 90s, or the Pixies until the early 00s. But despite vaguely recognizing the band name and the name Kristin Hersch, I had never (knowingly) heard Throwing Muses. I’m glad now to have rectified that, and I can now appreciate both their sound and their influence. Their emergence into the indie rock scene out of Boston in the mid 80s also brought us the Pixies, when the Pixies joined them on their European tour and followed them onto British label 4AD. And Throwing Muses’ influence can be heard on many female-led rock acts of the 90s and beyond. Hersch’s voice made an immediate impact, though I can’t quite say whether I like it or not. Sometimes it works really well with the band’s constantly shifting gritty DIY soundscape. Sometimes it stands out negatively for being a bit too warbly or yodely. Not quite on the Alanis Morissette level, but Alanis must have heard Hersch and been influenced by her. I was also reminded of Sleater Kinney in the erupting screams and guitars that ebb and then burst forth. I previously opined on the way the Pixies cleaned their sound up after their debut to positive effect, but I think with Throwing Muses it was the opposite. I listened to later Throwing Muses songs, and found I enjoyed the rawness of this debut more. Either way, they are a band that deserves more recognition for their impact, and better distribution for this influential work.
1001 albums for the win! I greatly enjoyed this album by a band I was only peripherally aware of as they related to Belly and Kim Deal/The Breeders/The Pixies. The album is all over the place but in the best way, like one of those brightly colored rubber bouncy balls. Energy that can't be contained. I hear elements of Sleater-Kinney and even Liz Phair (even more apparent on later albums). Great find, I have already listened to two other Throwing Muses albums as a result.
I liked this a lot. The simplicity, the noisy essence, the vocals. All very good. Too bad I’ll never listen to it again being that YouTube was the only place I could find it.

Throwing Muses began as a cool alt-rock/punk record with a decent sounding female lead, however towards the end her vocals became too whiny for me to really deal with. I really hate to rag on a female vocalist but if there is one thing I can't really stand, is that whiny screeching singing, which brought down my overall score. Best: Hate My Way Worst: Delicate Cutters Note: Spotify had the extended double album version, I only listened to the original 10 songs from the release.
Not for me. Was ok at times as grungy alt-rock with lots of distortion but probably not something I'll come back to.

another record I missed. I probably wouldnt have appreciated it at 11 and I never really got into the band when they were more popular in the 90s. But I would have loved this record if i found it in the 90s. Great sound scapes. Love the jangly guitars and the vocals.

Interesting post-punk album. Slightly grungy and folksy in places. Kristin Hersh's vocal delivery reminds me a bit of Courtney Love

Kind of makes me think of a missing link between 80s post-punk a la Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Cure, and the 90s alt-rock/ riot grrl scene (specifically Kathleen Hanna and Bikini Kill). Also reminds me of X-Ray Spex, whom I received a long time ago on this album. Makes total sense that this was a record released on 4AD. I really like the guitar work on this, super angular and weird, though admittedly nothing really stuck to me very hard on the first listen. Favorite track: "Hate My Way"

Favourite song(s): Hate My Way. Definitely influenced by Siouxsie Sioux. Honestly didn't feel anything while listening to this project. 2/5 from me.

Was ok. Quickly got boring. Most songs followed the same structure. It's like they took the pixies formula and made a template song from that and just tweaked that very slightly 12 times only. 2.5*
Decent
The is one was pretty straight forwards. I didn't find it first time around but some nice and mainstream girl indie punk was more than welcome.
Due to my age I came to Throwing Muses backwards - (Counting Backwards?) First via Belly and later Kristen Hersh's solo stuff. Another REM link, with Stipe's vocals on Your Ghost. Before finally coming to the Muses themselves. Of course I heard their more 'commercial' stuff first, Not Too Soon is an absolute worldie. To this record though, fully deserved inclusion. Yes, I get the Siouxsie references for sure in the early stuff. All of this is great, so dense but catchy. Standout above all though is Hate My Way - absolutely astonishing piece of music, and quite unlike anything else I've heard. The lyrics also, "I have a gun in my head", what does this mean, something about to go off? Delicate Cutters is also outstanding.

A fine punky time.
Another of the few albums that is hard to find. I liked it but thought it would have sounded dated even on release.
My co-judge and I never listened to these guys back in the day and thought they had more of a dark, shoegaze sound. So the first song was a surprise with it's quirky vocals and tempo shifts. They have lots of raw energy, combining arty post-punk with the occasional hint of folk. Kristen Hersch writes eclectic songs and is no doubt an entertaining performer. Her style has been cited as an influence (by ChatGPT anyway) by Alanis Morrissette and PJ Harvey. It's too bad these songs aren't on Spotify and available for future listening.
At first, I wasn't a fan of the lead singer's voice. By the end of the album, I still wasn't a fan.
This is a really interesting artistic, creative album. I notice the very blunt and robust rebellion found in fem-punk groups. This sound reminds me of The Slits from '79 and even Dazey and the Scouts in 2017. The shown forward aggression of being a girl, taking the stereotypical ideal of soft femininity- and throwing muck all over it. Very creative, real, & expressive

Wasn't bad. I usually have a hard time listening to rock bands fronted by women but I listened to this all the way through.
I'm not sure I'm rating the correct album, when I searched Throwing Muses (The Album) on Spotify it says it was released in 2003. Oh well... So, I had to listen to this twice. First time it was just a bunch of noise, but after hearing it a second time it's actually really good! Alt-Rock with a strong note of Grunge if you ask me. Pretty good stuff!
I found this fun. Might have been the run of average albums I got before this making me starved to enjoy something at all but the twisted up guitar, slightly breathy but silky smooth vocals are really working for me - I feel nostalgic for a 90s college experience, despite being born in 95.
Listened to The Real Ramona a lot in high school but liked this album a whole lot more.
A great weird voice. A little bit of everything on this album that's really held together by the unique singer.

Bad vocals and worse music. No joke, sounds like a bleating goat at some points. Too melancholic in most places. Unique sound though.

"We quit making out to attend this meeting/with old ladies on tremendous amounts of coke." My ears perked up hearing this lyric, so precise and funny and telling. A whole story in a line. This is a great slice of early 2000s rock, served with the scent of the 90s on it. I'll likely revisit this album and explore more of Throwing Muses discography. My highlights were "Pretty or Not", "Speed and Sleep", and "Half Blast".

I remember liking them better than I do. But, it was good to remember that they exist, and had influence on the sound from that time.

This has absolultely blown me away to be honest. It's probably the best discovery of The Project so far. I'd heard of Throwing Muses, but didn't know loads about them other than that they were a female-fronted rock band. I guess I'd expected something a bit like The Pretenders, and there are elements of that (Finished for instance), but actually the power of some songs and the delicacy of others provides an amazing emotional range. At times, there's a vocal effect that is a bit off putting, but when that's stripped away, like on Delicate Cutters, you're left with a fantastic song. Great stuff!

Surprised to find an album without Not Too Soon on the list. Turns out they just write cool music. Love the sonic tone, swirling, distorted, slighly muted, great stuff.

Finally tracked this down on YouTube. I’ve enjoyed Throwing Muses since I was in high school but hadn’t heard this. Wow. Such a great record. Possibly their best.

Really really cool! Reminds me a little bit of Cocteau Twins vocally but that may just be the style of the time. Definitely cool witchy vibes and I kinda wish this album was on Spotify. I'll for sure listen again

This was an interesting album to get right after Porcupine by Echo and the Bunnymen. In some ways, more of the same, but also a much different approach to the post-punk genre (not that there is all that much that unites that genre together). Like Porcupine, I would not have pegged this album for being as early as it is. You could tell me that this was mid-90s, and I would have easily believed it. Throwing Muses were well ahead of their times with this album. Like a lot of female-led albums, it didn't get the recognition it deserved in its time (and continues not to). Clearly a very influential album, given how many artists would later incorporate its sound 4/5

I love Kristen Hersh and Tanya Donnelly's solo work, and Belly, but have never quite vibed with where it all started. Perhaps just a bit too much going on at once, so this is a good listen but hasn't quite pushed the switch.

Hi octane, edgy indie/rock, featuring some jagged guitar sounds and riffs, a dark foreboding atmosphere plus a decent singer. Nothing really sticks out as a classic song but there's nothing bad on here either. On the whole, very enjoyable.
Echoes of pixes enjoyed the energy and the noise.
My mate persuaded me to see Throwing Muses in the early 90s. "A bit like Pixies' she said. Pixies were way better.
I wasn't really into this, but I got into some of the "Doghouse cassette tape" bonus tracks. Maybe they're exactly the same and I just needed to give it a second listen, though.
I got confused with the linked album on Spotify, was it "Throwing Muses" or was it "In a Doghouse"? Turns out "In a Doghouse" is a compilation album, with "Throwing Muses (1986)" being the first 10 tracks. As for the album itself, it was alright, but then I'd listened to it straight after Pixies' Bossanova, so maybe not the fairest canvas to start with.

In de eerste oogopslag zag ik 'Muse' staan en ik schrok me dood, denkend dat de dag was gekomen waarop Matt Bellamy m'n batterij volledig zou gaan leegtrekken met z'n bombastische gruwelmuziek. Wat kan die man, naast slopende muziek maken, ook ontzettend goed en hard ademhalen zeg. Maargoed, dat moment blijft voorlopig nog even als een donkere wolk boven me hangen, dit is een andere band. De Spotify link hierbij klopte niet. Het album waar het naar verwees was iets teveel huismerk Blondie. Gelukkig kwam ik er na 3 nummers achter. Wat een reis heb ik achter de rug, nu al. Het album waar het echt om draait is een stuk lekkerder. Doet me qua zowel qua zang als muziek flink denken aan Be Your Own Pet. Lekker rauw gitaargeluid, alsof het in iemands kelder is opgenomen maar dan wel door een professioneel team. Ik kende dit totaal niet maar ik kan er wel van genieten. Niet elk nummer zit in het midden van m'n genotszone maar overall een voor mij prima album.

I recall playing The Real Ramona a lot in college. Besides that I haven't listened to this band much otherwise. I was a fan of Belly and definitely prefer Tanya Donnelly over Kristin Hersh. I haven't heard this particular album before (and I still haven't). This is not easily available, so I'm gonna give it 3 stars based on what I know of this band.

The cool thing about the 80's is that post-punk bands would start to develop a unique sound with more pop-informed songwriting. The result is effectively indie rock where the production was way more captivating than a lot of the more mainstream stuff from the 80's. Throwing Muses, while lesser known, was one of those bands. They would pave the way for the Pixies to be signed by 4AD, as they would share similarities in their sound that proved to be popular with an alternative audience. Throwing Muses is notably raw and restless. There's a lot of well-executed ideas throughout the album that I happen to appreciate more as the runtime goes on. Every song ends and I think "wow, that was great! I wonder what the next one has in store?" and it's just as good or interesting. A true underground underrated gem. Dig this up and give it a listen.

Didn’t particularly enjoy the vocals. Maybe if I spent more time with this album, I’d start to like them more, but I don’t particularly want to do that.
So far, the list generator prescribed quite a few American college rock albums from the 80s (practically all are very obvious 5-star albums), but the Throwing Muses were still missing. Luckily their debut is included in the list. Great album from a great band. It is their most intense album: some combination of punk and jangle pop and all songs are winners.
Melodic and edgy: I like this kind of stuff.
This is much closer to the angular British post-punk of circa 1980 than the New England college rock of circa 1990. Surprisingly good.
It’s a nice post-punk / alt-rock record, had never heard it before. But after I finished, nothing really stuck with me.

Never heard of Throwing Muses before. This wasn't on Apple Music, so I had to listen on YouTube on my laptop speakers. I don't know if that affected the review one way or the other. When I started it up, I thought hmmm, this might be decent. Then she started singing. No, I don't like this very much. Then she started doing that weird quivering with her voice, and I really did not like that. Some of the lyrics sounded pretty questionable too, not that I understood the meaning of any of it. Overall, it wasn't a very pleasant listening experience. I'd much rather listen to pop girl groups like the Bangles, the Go-Gos, Bananarama, or even 'Til Tuesday.

Had to pull this one up on YouTube, not on Apple Music. I feel like I shouldn't like her voice, it goes crazy several times. But something about it was cool. Just enough acoustic layered into the punk sounds.

I loved what I thought was the first Throwing Muses album - I just didn't know about this one at all. I was a big fan of House Tornado/Real Ramona/Hunkpappa and I thought Fat Skier was their first so now I'm totally confused! I saw them live back in 89 and forced my university friends to be fans too. This is great, full of the slightly discordant tempos and melodies over interesting chord structures. I get it won't be to everyone's tastes but it was great to discover this.

The singing at some parts sounded like if bobs burgers was trying to make fun of this type of singing. Idk how else to describe it. It was pretty mid tho. I like stuff in this genre usually but it didn’t jump out as really good even though I liked some of the songs/riffs. Also it’s only on YouTube so probably never gonna listen again

This was by far the hardest album to find on this list. Nowhere at all on Spotify or Apple Music so I had to look up each song individually on YouTube. I did enjoy the album but what a pain.
I don't even remember the songs I found listenable. I listened to "In a doghouse" by accident, going by the album cover linked here. I think I liked that one better than the self titled one. That would've been three stars.

This was a weird one - Sleater Kinney + Bikini Kill + early Hole vibes I've never heard of them before but I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is an underrated/underappreciated group. I didn't dig deep on any of the lyrics Definitely this has piqued my interest and I would like to hear more. All that being said, I didn't /love/ love it, though I didn't have trouble listening to the whole thing.
This was new to me, gave it a couple listens. They have their own unique thing going on, especially in the vocals and lyrics. I like how they stay in high energy serious mode the whole time. I could see myself coming back to this.
I like a fair amount of what's going on here musically, especially considering it came out in 86, but vocally/lyrically I'm not as big of a fan. They definitely have their own sound, but the different elements kind of cancel each other out. Respect for being pioneers in the "college rock" era. Ahead of their time to be sure, but not something I find pleasurable.

Yeah, that was pretty alright. It was fun and unique in a lot of good ways. Strong energy, good production, solid performances. Pretty dang alright, indeed. I don't see myself revisiting it, mind you. But I'm glad to have experienced it.

Strong: I'm shocked at how low these ratings are bc I didn't think it was half bad. Yeah there is better punk out there with a more memorable selection of songs but the strong female vocal is rare to see in this genre and I'm thankful for this album for switching it up. Would I listen again? probably not but I still feel it deserves more credit.

I gave up on this a few tracks into the second 'album'. Too long and not for me.
This is a very ambitious debut. No album should be one hour and 41 minutes though. In its favour are the melodies. I thought I would bail after half an hour. I'm pleased that I persisted. I was rewarded with some of the more hoe down tunes towards the final third. It's the bass that holds this album together.

Great sound, really shaking up the eighties and part of a whole new emerging alt rock sound. No doubt enjoyment will increase with further listens - the sound grabs you first and the production is such that the vocals are one more layer of sound, an instrument - so I have no idea what Hersh is saying and there’s further exploration to come - but I’m willing to find out.

Baller album, this is exactly my shit. Love the harsh vocals and early punk vibe. This is a bear to find, I assume their history with many music labels has made music rights complex, but Youtube had the album in its entirety.
Such a cool sound! Definitely more punk-y than what I'm used to, but still slays. Also, love the juxtaposition of a female voice with punk/rock. Her (their? at one point it sounded like multiple women, maybe it was just vocal layering) voice(s) gave me slight Dolores O'Riordan vibes. I definitely need to listen again, it's frustrating that it's not on Spotify though.

I will freely admit I think I missed some things here. It was hard to find, and so I didn't get to listen to it under the best circumstances. That said, what I heard I didn't enjoy much.

Logistically, this is not an easy album to listen to. Nothing about it on Apple Music. I found a copy of this on YouTube. To keep track I had to listen closely and follow along to the lyrics on the web so I could know what song I was listening to. It was worth the effort! Call Me immediately had me paying attention - what a great song! I liked Green, but it was Hate My Way that gave me chills! That lead singer is INTENSE! Vicky’s Box left me a bit stunned. What a song! Rabbit’s Dying - holy shit who are these people? This is an incredible song. I feel like this band is from some higher dimension… they break a lot of songcrafting rules and their songs hold up. Clip clops throughout America (She Can’t Say No) and really incredible performances grabbed me - that lead singer again! WOW! WTF? Soul Soldier just about knocked me out… like two songs in one - very different in tone and composition but somehow melded together. This from teenagers? Wow! This is a spellbinding album filled with incredible songs in the hands of a great band wielding a singer who seems to have come from some other world. The music is so sophisticated, breaking all kinds of rules about what makes a great song and in the process creating some really amazing songs! Why this was so difficult to find and listen to? This is one of the best things I’ve heard on this project… I cannot stop thinking about how impressive these unorthodox songs are. It borders on a crime that it took nearly 40 years to come to my attention. But thankfully this speaks to me maybe even more loudly than it would have when I was 18. I am in awe…

In the 90's I liked Tanya Donnelly's band the Belly, found out she was in this band and checked them out. I was blown away but who good how good Kristin Hersh on this album. Great album.

Throwing Muses prefigures much, but it also occupies a rather unique sonic place I can't quite place yet. The sound sources are clear enough, emotions more so, and the album has an arc. The connection to Pixies is obvious, this debut more fully-realized than the other band's if a touch less distinctive.
Interesting, but I can't see myself going back to it. There are just so many bands that have done this style of music way better.

This album feels like a total prelude to what would be 90s indie and alternative music. There's this grungey aspect to it but then there's still that reverb-y fingerprint of the 80s in there. I read somewhere that the Pixies opened for Throwing Muses. This album has a lot for me to unpack. Lyrically, I'm trying to follow what's going on but I feel like it's relatively cryptic stuff. Or maybe my brain is too small. Instrumentally is where I'm sold on my first listen. Basslines that bounce, basslines that feel dark and broody, Hersh's voice that switches from smooth to shriek to calm, the random percussive elements ("Rabbits Dying"), some VERY sick riffs ("Call Me", "Hate My Way" "Stand Up"), the (dare I say) beat switches ("Soul Soldier"). I get this B-52s silliness from a lot of the more upbeat tracks and a Toadies type of 90s from the slower ones. This is another album that really feels like it's in between the gradient of 80s and 90s, a connective tissue between two decades in music with very distinctive styles. I'm kind of just rambling here writing notes as I wait on my flight to board but, in essence, I feel like this is one of those times where I "get" this album and I "get" why it's on this list. For music lovers, especially those who have an interest in the intersection between post-punk and indie rock, this album feels like it has to have been an inspiration to many and the fact that this band went relatively unnoticed makes me think they deserve to be heard.
I think this is a remarkable album. I’m sure I’ve heard of this band before but can’t remember the context. This predates Pixies and is as early a “90s indie” album as I can think of. I listened to their 1991 album The Real Ramona and thought that was spectacular as well. The fact this is from 1986, was released by a British label, is by a band fronted by two women, and is so tight, unique, and confident a debut all at once congeals it into something special. It’s sent me down a long forgotten rabbit hole today listening to bands that Throwing Muses undeniably had a huge impact on with this debut: Autoclave, Rainer Maria, Liz Phair, Pixies, Modest Mouse, Bikini Kill, Nirvana, Breeders, That Dog, and so many others. Hell, it paved the way for the entire 4AD label, now home to indebted powerhouse indie acts like Adrianne Lenker/Big Thief, Deerhunter, Tune-Yards, US Girls, The National…. A great, great, important album and honestly one of my favorites discovered via this group! Thanks 1001 Albums Generator! You da best! 4/5.
Okay, very interesting album. You can only find it on YouTube, and the band’s works itself seems hard to find. I don’t see why it should be— the album is really good. I loved the singer’s performance in the album… so fun, and unthinking, and pretty unique. Some combination of what feels like psychadelic, maybe folk chord ideas, and alt punk. I mean it was super cool! After the second half my ear started to get a little tired of the tonality of it… it does feel a little long. But I had a good time, 3/5

It wasn't that great of an album. I tolerated it but didn't really get into it. No need to revisit the album. It is best to describe the album as alternative as it was not full blown indie. Thankfully it was a short album.

They're good but it's not quite my taste.
I don't recall this album from '86, but did listen a bit to this band in the 90s. I always enjoyed their style, which is jagged and grungy, but still has surprise melodic elements as well. For when it came out, the album would have been pretty edgy. It's actually quite prescient of how music would sound 5-7 years down the line. In the grand scheme, it gets lost in the shuffle of a lot of the music that came after it. But it's a really interesting listen. Album isn't available on Spotify. Throwing Muses is a name I recognized, but the album was all new music for me. The album was okay and seems adjacent to some of the bands that I have regularly listened to. This album felt like a predecessor to some of the work from Sleater-Kinney. "Hate My Way" and "Vicky's Box" were my least favorite tracks, but "Fear" and "Soul Soldier" had some great backing rhythms and energy that keep this album at least at 3 stars. I would be interested in hearing more from Throwing Muses.

Really liked the first 3/4th or so, then it got a little out there
It’s annoying to have to find the songs one by one. I would be willing to buy it while I still have a car that can play CDs, but timing wise that won’t work out for the challenge. Very interesting overall. Nothing about this bores me. I do wonder about whether certain songs in particular relate to being hit by a car while riding her bike. I can’t help but wonder about the role of dissociation on this album in general, since Kristin has since spoken about being dissociated during songwriting prior to EMDR treatment. Lots of the lyrics speak to trauma and various aspects of mental illness. I didn’t expect the country influences that came up in a couple places. It gets a 4 rather than a 5 for because of the annoyance of trying to piece it together myself for this (I could buy directly from Kristin that might shift things) and because it is sort of emotionally intense with few breaks outside of songs that are on other albums anyway. Those albums can be 5s. If you’re new to the band this is certainly a good primer.

Crazed blissful caterwauling. I have been a fan of the Throwing Muses for decades but was admittedly unfamiliar with this album. To be honest, I didn't like it at first but decided to push through. I gave it a second listen, then a third, then a forth. It had grabbed me. It is like a dream or a lucid waking nightmare. It also paved the way for a lot of American indie/underground music that follow Pixies being a prime example
I like this! Exactly the kind of niche badass alt rock I enjoy. And the band is fronted by a unique and bewitching woman? Amazing! I am loving the vocals, the lyrical content and style, and the production that creates the right mix of raw yet popish musicality. It honestly feels like it paved the way or in some part even inspired Hole's Live Through This. Sucks that I can't listen to it on Spotify, because that's where I do all of my listening, but at least there's a lot more Throwing Muses music there that I can explore. And I will be exploring this band more, no doubt about it. Hidden gem, good find!
It's a cranky and hard album, but after the stodgy traditional borefests of Dwight Yoakim and Rod Stewart it feels exciting and refreshing. It's not a sane album, and I don't know if I want to listen again. But I'm very glad I did listen to it.

1.5 rated down. It's not among the top worst albums on this list, but I tried so hard to enjoy some parts of the album and I really didn't manage to do so. There's the occasional few seconds that make me think "oh, this chord sounds pretty decent" "hey, this bridge is actually nice" - but just a few seconds later I'm fighting the urge to just run away from this album again.
This one didn't do a lot for me. I didn't really dislike it but I wasn't in love with any of the tracks either. Only a few songs stood out to me. I like a lot of other artists from this generation/genre (The Pixies for instance) but I just wasn't taken by this album. Standout Tracks: Hate My Way, Soul Soldier

The book had a rave review for this album. I might have liked it on a different day, or maybe 10 years ago, but right now it's not having a major impact for me. Good on these two young artists though, there's a lot of variety and emotion on display here.

I could not find the compilation album that was listed, but it seems to be a re-issue of the self-titled first album - which I have on vinyl - and some demos and other stuff. I think the debut is a fine album, great punkish energy and interesting melodies. And Kirsten Hirsch's vocals are menacing and aggressive. 3.5 stars
