Reviews (page 6 of 6)

Well, that was a little much. Whiny falsetto to the max! Nothing was unlistenable, but some really dragged on. Some were ok. I'm sure there was something important and topical being said, but it's lost on me.

Not one for me.

Jo aso isch nöd so miis. Het es paar cooli moment.

Idk. Kind of annoying. Wasn’t on Spotify so negative 1 star.

annoying

Idc 2.5

So I thought the “Throwing Muses” debut album was incredibly interesting to say the least… I enjoyed the musical compositions, and there was a pretty good diversity of sound throughout the album… The most puzzling aspect, were the vocals – and the singer has a pretty nice voice or this type of music, and there were stretches where I really enjoyed what she was doing… There was however, this issue of her trying to sing differently during different portions of songs, and not every now and then, or only on particular songs – nope, she felt the need to do it multiple times, with multiple “styles”, over the course of a 3 or 4 minutes song… From my perspective, those vocal changes worked about 1/3 of the time for me, so when it worked – it really enhanced the song, but for 2/3’s of the time, it was just an incredible distraction from the song… I kept asking my self how this would have sounded if she had toned it down a bit, or saved those vocal gyrations for specific moments, but c’est la vie… Glad I listened, and like I said – it was very interesting no doubt, but at the end of the day, it’s just a 2 for me…

Not terrible enough for a 1, but not enjoyable enough for a 3. What do post punk artists have against good vocals?

Wasnt terrible but I found this boring, an album I just had to endure.

was below par, won't be coming back to this

Not bad but kinda boring and just couldn't connect with the vocal performance at all.

Quite nice post punk guitar / drums but it’s very forgettable. Bet they were a good band to see live though.

Wait a minute... I felt like there was something a bit fishy about today's link. Double checked and it turned out YT had pitched me a record from 2003, which I didn't enjoy much. But let's rewind and see how we get on with the intended debut from 1986... nope, couldn't really engage with that on a very meaningful level either. Weird, as my expectation was that I'd like it. Oh well. Can't win em all.

Musically quite good, but the vocals fall short of expectations, the voice is too thin. After a few songs, everything becomes repetitive, no variety, not very inspiring.

This band should be in jail for releasing two self-titled albums

A bit 'yell-y' for my liking. Musically it's solid, but the singer just isn't my fav.

Nothing here to make it stand out.

Good music but not exciting.

Tough to find this album, but the individual tracks were on YouTube. I didn't really care for this but I'm always happy to see more representation for female artists. At times, this reminded me a little bit of Jewel, but edgy.

I like the sound, especially the voice, but none of the Melodie’s really hooked me. Among all albums, I’d give it a 3. I don’t see why it’s on this list though, so I give it a 2.

It was ok.

Hueuueheueheueheuhe is the only thing I heard after a while.

This is not my type of music but I like Kristins strong attitude. Still I stopped the listening session midway through and didn’t find my way into the record even later that day.

Awful singer she was really bad. Like angry vibes but just no emotion in her voice 💀

Not for me this.

pretty sure the last song has a goat on it

Not a huge fan of this.

Definite bar band vibes. - Status Quo has a bit of a Law of Nature flavor--slightly harder rock, not quite as crazy about the singer's voice and melody - Los Flamingos a little more punk

Lighter and more accessible than I expected for something punk adjacent. Hate My Way has a proto indie rock sound to it, to me. Nice intro riff on Vicky's Box. At times it leans more folk. Listening on YouTube so harder to pick out individual tracks, but not enjoying the second half as much. Last track is my least favorite.

Doesn’t really appeal. Having said that it wasn’t unlistenable. Probably a somewhat harsh 2*

Bit of a confusing one on the list here. No song with over 80,000 plays on Spotify so I don't quite understand the inclusion here. Sounds like a band that's playing in the background of a bar you're at. Occasionally you find yourself nodding along, but not really. 4/10 (2/5)

C'était correct mais meh en même temps.

Loud and jangly. Answers the question, "Mommy, where does Sleater-Kinney come from?" For me, pretty unpleasant. Unexpected bangers: Since it's not on Spotify, I don't have tracks and sounds lined up, I guess America or Fear.

throwing muses' first self-titled album is definitely unique to this list. in all of the various punk subgenres, there's such a domination of men. but throwing muses lets you know within the first minute that they're (mostly) women in the post punk space! and, respectfully, the vocals are not good, which seems even more punk. how many times have we let bad male vocalists slide in punk? so--i appreciated this inclusion, but i wasn't that into the album.

Not that well acclaimed I would guess as I could only find it on YouTube cobbled together as someone's obsessive project of an album. Nonetheless, it was pretty wild and interesting and as one commenter mentioned so before its time. Glade I heard it, liked the vocals, but not dipping my toes back in any time soon.

Throwing Muses began as a cool alt-rock/punk record with a decent sounding female lead, however towards the end her vocals became too whiny for me to really deal with. I really hate to rag on a female vocalist but if there is one thing I can't really stand, is that whiny screeching singing, which brought down my overall score. Best: Hate My Way Worst: Delicate Cutters Note: Spotify had the extended double album version, I only listened to the original 10 songs from the release.

Not for me. Was ok at times as grungy alt-rock with lots of distortion but probably not something I'll come back to.

raw, emotional, artistic, alt. punk

Hate My Way

British female punk. Not terrible but not my vibe at all.

Kind of a weird cross between punk and Country at times. Don't like the vocals too much, not that great overall, but not straight up bad either.

Not for me and all songs song similar

Jos olisi parhaat biisit tiivistänyt yhdelle levylle niin olisi voinut olla kolmosenkin levy. Sopivaa ärhäkkyyttä laulajan soundissa josta pisteitä.

En päässy kiinni tähän mökään

Not for me...liked a couple of tracks.

Favourite song(s): Hate My Way. Definitely influenced by Siouxsie Sioux. Honestly didn't feel anything while listening to this project. 2/5 from me.

Decent

01) Call Me - 5,0 02) Green - 7,0 03) Hate My Way - 5,5 04) Vicky's Box - 5,0 05) Rabbits Dying - 5,0 06) America (She Can't Say No) - 5,0 07) Fear - 5,5 08) Stand Up - 5,0 09) Soul Soldier - 5,0 10) Delicate Cutters - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,30 (53/100) Song #2 sounds OK to me. Later I read that is the only song on this album not written by Kirstin Hersh. Well, it seems I'm not a fan of hers. Although, I loved "Your Ghost" when I was a teenager. Go figure.

At first, I wasn't a fan of the lead singer's voice. By the end of the album, I still wasn't a fan.

This is a really interesting artistic, creative album. I notice the very blunt and robust rebellion found in fem-punk groups. This sound reminds me of The Slits from '79 and even Dazey and the Scouts in 2017. The shown forward aggression of being a girl, taking the stereotypical ideal of soft femininity- and throwing muck all over it. Very creative, real, & expressive

I want inspired.

Bad vocals and worse music. No joke, sounds like a bleating goat at some points. Too melancholic in most places. Unique sound though.

A less good version of Siouxsie and the Banshees

not my thing

Interesting alternative album, though no remarkable songs

My life would have been better without this. I'd argue I'm not alone

Gear: Aür Audio Aurora Mix: bis auf wenige Ausnahmen spektakulär unspektakulär Musik: großartig weirde Vocals - die aber gerne noch was rotziger sein könnten Wertung: 🔴🔴(🔴)/5

didn't throw them far enough

Cool beats but just overall not my favourite style of music.

Rock/punk. I don't like the songs and I can't stand the singer's voice. 2/5

Perhaps a little dated. Ok but probably won’t listen again

This didn't set me alight, but it's definitely creative. Getting some strong PJ Harvey vibes from the vocals. Favourite tracks: Green, Stand Up.

Drivel, lots of moaning and carrying on.

My mate persuaded me to see Throwing Muses in the early 90s. "A bit like Pixies' she said. Pixies were way better.

Not really my vibe but cool stuff.

Female punk, not for me

Didn't like it

Loud ‘n noisy, but not catching or fun.

Never heard of Throwing Muses before. This wasn't on Apple Music, so I had to listen on YouTube on my laptop speakers. I don't know if that affected the review one way or the other. When I started it up, I thought hmmm, this might be decent. Then she started singing. No, I don't like this very much. Then she started doing that weird quivering with her voice, and I really did not like that. Some of the lyrics sounded pretty questionable too, not that I understood the meaning of any of it. Overall, it wasn't a very pleasant listening experience. I'd much rather listen to pop girl groups like the Bangles, the Go-Gos, Bananarama, or even 'Til Tuesday.

2/12, 17%

Was am Anfang des Albums als vielversprechendes Rock Alternative Album beginnt, rutscht im weiteren in die Mittelmäßigkeit ab.

I don't even remember the songs I found listenable. I listened to "In a doghouse" by accident, going by the album cover linked here. I think I liked that one better than the self titled one. That would've been three stars.

Just kinda loud and noisy but without any memorable choruses or energy.Kinda slow and boring in parts as well.the riffs kinda suck, and the vocals are just kinda meh.it’s like a 2.5 but I’m going for a 2.

29 songs is too many for one album, but I wouldn't know because Spotify blocks 28 of those songs, leaving the listener to decide on a ranking based on one song "Hate My Way".

Not sure

I unno

pas particulièrement envie de me procurer leur cédérom

i forgot i'd listened to this. that says everything about the album you need to know.

Reminded me of my days spent in West London. I would spend my mornings with friends and then would get covered head to toe in the jizz of the entire Chelsea first team and backroom staff.

this album is absolutely not in my taste. songs are not bad, but i didn't enjoy them. tracks added to playlist: 1 fav track: call me (haha first song on album) 3.5/10 imo

wtf is this 1 I Guess 2

Not terrible, but not really good either. Also way too fucking long even with skipping the duplicates.

Debut Album by Throwing Muses. From Rhode Island, USA. Genre : Post-punk, alternative rock Single: Soul Soldier (Did not chart) Notable Songs: Hate My Way, Delicate Cutters First Listen: my 968th album from the list of 1089 albums. I will freely admit I think I missed some things here. It was hard to find, and so I didn't get to listen to it under the best circumstances. That said, what I heard I didn't enjoy much.

Not for me

Caterwauling and moaning over early alternative

It wasn't that great of an album. I tolerated it but didn't really get into it. No need to revisit the album. It is best to describe the album as alternative as it was not full blown indie. Thankfully it was a short album.

Very ok

Vähän taiteellisuuteen kallistuvampaa. Kappaleet aika sekavia.

Like the Muses, hadn't owned this. It's OK - nothing amazing

This one didn't do a lot for me. I didn't really dislike it but I wasn't in love with any of the tracks either. Only a few songs stood out to me. I like a lot of other artists from this generation/genre (The Pixies for instance) but I just wasn't taken by this album. Standout Tracks: Hate My Way, Soul Soldier

Las primeras tres canciones son estupendas, pero después la voz de la cantante se hace más y más insoportable. Aprecio el espíritu punk-rock eso sí.

Didn't care for the vocals or the lyrics.

It was just alright, probably pretty edgy at the time

I wasn't terribly impressed by this album. I thought the rhythms were great, but there wasn't anything else that stood out to me from it. When I think of great works in alternative rock from this era, I think of Sonic Youth, Pixies, REM, and The Smiths, but this album just didn't hold a candle to the albums that those bands were putting out around the same time. Maybe I'm just missing something, but nothing on this album was very memorable to me.

This sucks. Maybe it's something I could learn to love with enough listens. But on a first listen, it is very disappointing. The songs are boring. Vocals are ok, but mostly the songs are forgettable. It's weird I disliked this, because usually I like post-punk indie stuff like this. Probably wasn't the best introduction to this band.

not really a fan at all of this one, there is some interesting things going on but it felt really same samey to me by the end of the album and I was glad to turn it off

More than a bit too lo-fi for my tastes. Although there are some interesting and compelling musical twists and turns, it's not enough to sustain a ton of interest for me. They eventually developed a bit more (and splintered into rather more successful groups) but essentially my lazy summary is: late 80s college music that was on at parties - just a solid 2. 5/10 2 stars.

I was expecting this to be better somehow. I wasn't familiar with the band outside of seeing the name in print (and honestly I thought it was Moses for ages) I like post-punk stuff for the most part, but this just didn't scratch any itch and frankly I got bored. Maybe I'll try again someday or with a different album. A 2 for now. Pity.

Why is this on this list?

Listens: 1 Enjoyed: Not really It felt very chaotic and often a strange mix between folk and rock. The shriekiness of her voice mixed with the chaos of the band just isn't for me

Not a fan of the goat voice.Everything was very average for an 80s rock band. 2/5

I've always felt like Throwing Muses were one of those bands you're told you should like, but nobody you know has ever heard of them. That said, there are some good songs on here.

Not sure if I was expecting too much, but came away with too little. Really thought this was gonna by a 4-5 star for me...well, I tried...just not for me...maybe it's timing, who knows?

I had to listen to this on YouTube, so maybe I didn't get the full "experience", but I did not enjoy this. I'm not the biggest fan of this type of music, and this album is no exception. I found it somewhat generic, and boring. There was a live performance of one of the songs from '87, and I actually (kind of) enjoyed that. But then again, live music is almost always better.

One of the things I love (or at least very much appreciate) about the current media landscape is the ability to just listen to an album or watch a movie pretty much on demand. One of the things I hate is seeking out a piece of media only to find that not enough people care enough about it to make it available. That seems to be the case with this first, self-titled Throwing Muses album. I don't have an Apple Music or Tidal account so maybe it's on there but it definitely isn't on Spotify, not in the U.S. anyway. I was able to find it in bits in pieces on YouTube minus one song, "Stand Up," which was available in a live version (that I could have sworn was from a those crappy cellphone video but was actually from 1987 so VHS I guess?) with not great sound so I didn't count it as part of my rating. After all that, I didn't really care for this album, some of it was just ok but a lot of it just wasn't my thing I guess. I haven't listened to a ton of Throwing Muses but I have liked or even loved some of their songs over the years, "Dizzy," "Counting Backwards" and "Big Yellow Gun" of the top of my head. Those all seam to have fuller production or something, I don't know if that is the correct terminology or if it even means anything but I think that's what the difference is to me. It's actually made me interested in digging deeper into their discography.

bleh garage band

This was added to the list for some reason and first listen I wasn’t blown away by anything.

Didn't like

Maybe this was a you had to be there kind of album. I was around in 86 but missed this one. I'm also not a fan of post punk so that might have something to do with it. The album comes across as warbling and boring. It was a chore to listen to. I wouldn't suggest it unless someone told me they want to annoy their neighbors.

I couldn’t find an angle into this one. Everything seemed disjointed, I didn't care for it sonically or lyrically, overall just not for me. 1.5 as there wasn’t anything egregious.

Jeuj.

Entirely forgettable.

Could not get into it at all. I think there is some punk style and ambitious songwriting that I admire, but I found this mostly just frustrating. Instead of feeling as expressive as I imagine it should do (and must do to many) to me it just felt rough around the edges

I couldn't even figure out what was the right album to listen to. If it's that obscure, it isn't going to be worth it. I listened to a few songs from them and they sounded unoriginal.

Hard with the YT quality but was rough. You could feel the start of something but not ready yet..still feels like an amateur pub band or college battle of the band. Hate My Way is the prime example of why this got it's rating.

Didn’t mind the music itself, very college rock (not surprising for a 4AD release). But the vocals were NOT pleasant at all. Really annoying from the start - I had to skip around and nothing made it better.

Can’t listen

I just felt that there was nothing to this, they 100% picked the wrong Throwing Muses album, should have gone with The Real Ramona.

Go to YouTube and search in a doghouse to find the actual record, it’s not on Spotify. But honestly, you don’t need to do that. This is awful. Some nice instrumentation at times. But the singer is awful. The songwriting is terrible. This was borderline unlistenable. 1/5.

How do albums like this make this list?

Weird music, songs, and sound.

Good for them for having a career.

I love Throwing Muses but I could not find anywhere to listen to it.

Does a tree make a sound if it falls in a forest and nobody is there. Does an album make a...

I . . . guess I didn't get it? The lyrics were banal and the music was some of the most boring punk I can think of.

Throwing muses more like throwing up because puking

Did not finish the second Disc...The singer has a really grating singing voice and the instrumentation is very bland.

Despite the rhythm section's attempt to make the songs somewhat more interesting, the mindless buzzing of the guitar and the damn bleating of the vocalist completely undermine their efforts. I barely managed to get through it.

There was absolutely nothing in this album for me.

Another familiar band name, but a band whose music I don't think I've ever listened to, at least not knowingly and deliberately. Plays like one of those annoying student projects, sort of reminds me of R.E.M. in the "this is rubbing me the wrong fucking way" style. Sounds to me like pretentious pseudo-artistic music.

couldn’t listen

Ever wonder what throwing a cat through a wood chipper sounds like? Wonder no more fam. Just play Delicate Cutters... Why the fuck is this absolute trash on this list? Fuck off Favorite songs: Stand Up, Rabbits Dying Least favorite songs: Delicate Cutters, Hate My Way, Vicky's Box, America (She Can't Say No) 1/5

Can’t listen on Spotify.

Wasn’t able to listen to it on Spotify, unavailable to stream.

Not available

Unlistenable

One hit wonder, one star in oblivion.

Not available on spotify, so it seems unfair to not even give it a shot, but I listened to a bit of it and felt it wouldn't have connected. The two sisters make it sound like it will be lillith, but it's not

Not on spotify

I can’t find this anywhere. It’s a shame because it sounds like it’d be up my alley.

No idea why this was on the list. I must be getting more deaf an unfortunately just cant hear the good bits

I was instantly bored. I could hear influences like Lene Lovich, Siouxsie Sioux and Dresden Dolls, but I didn't like the songs and hate the band name.

alt punk

Couldn't listen

Derivação tosca do Pretenders.

What absolute drivel. Listen before you die? Id have been happy to miss out. A crappy Siousxie tribute band playing folk rock trying to pass themselves off as post punk. Quite close to the worst album I've ever heard.

Look, we are getting to the end of this list and I’m getting really tired of British albums on here. That’s number one, number two is when iTunes doesn’t even have this album, but maybe they do and it’s from 2003? I don’t know and honestly I’m at the point of not caring. I can’t take many more like this.

Nicht meine Richtung

Listened Before? N Unavailable on Spotify. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: N/A

Such a grating voice this sucks ass

A big theme for Gen X is being a slacker and just generally not giving a fuck. But there’s a big difference between a band that appears to not give a fuck but is actually an extremely talented group of people, and this album, which genuinely sounds like the members did not give a fuck about learning their instruments or music in general.

Not available

I wasn’t a big fan of random compilation albums on this list (The Hives, Husker Du, Big Brother and the Holding Company) to begin with, but at least I knew something about them and liked some of their songs. This? All I know is that these folks paved a path to a record contract for The Pixies. While I’m grateful, I don’t think it’s a reason I should listen to this.

Just not my sort of music

Wasn’t available on my music service.

Instrumentalt är det ganska coolt men rösten får det att låta som något alt-tjejband från Falun, svår lyssning…

Horrible. Yoko Ono took voice lessons and screams in tune.

The album isn’t on Spotify. I sampled most of the tracks on YouTube. Not for me.

Wasn't my favorite. Couldn't get through just a few songs.

I’m gonna be honest, didn’t really listen too much of it, just wasn’t for me

Nah not for me.

Was removed from Spotify

Can’t find this album. Links to a single and spotify is a compilation album. Why I give it a 1.

I gave up on this a few tracks into the second 'album'. Too long and not for me.

Pretty tuneless. Not really my thing. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Soul Soldier Date listened: 07/06/23

Dreadful

Apple music didn't have this one, so I had to search for it. Finally found a compiled album on YouTube. Definitely not worth that much effort.

Not on Spotify

1.5 rated down. It's not among the top worst albums on this list, but I tried so hard to enjoy some parts of the album and I really didn't manage to do so. There's the occasional few seconds that make me think "oh, this chord sounds pretty decent" "hey, this bridge is actually nice" - but just a few seconds later I'm fighting the urge to just run away from this album again.

I wanted this to end at a point long before it did end

big thumbs down. right off the bat i said hmm maybe, but as the woman’s voice became consistently awful i gave up. i really did not like her goat voice.

meni hieman ohi, ei jättänyt juuri muistijälkeä

Tusina-post-jotain. Pari kirkkaampaa (melodisempaa) hetkeä, mutta uudelleenkuunteluarvo lähes nolla.

jooh ei nappa yhtään... tylsää kitaratyöskentelyä kuulostaa vaan satunnaiselta rämpytykseltä ilman mitään syytä huoh. vokalisti laulaa laiskasti joka on hyvä mutta lammastekninen laulunhoilotus kohdat eivät. eivät toimi. rummut sentään ihan hyviä mutta nautinto on niin vähäistä että ykköstä tulee silmään. sillä micra lähtee käytiin mutta ei kovin pitkälle pötkitä ENNEN KUIN BENSA LOPPUU.. green paras biisi..
