Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Første halvdel har nogle gigantiske bangers, anden del bliver virkelig kedelig. Neptunes beats gode
The singles are brilliant pop hits. They really are! The rest of the album is a bit "meh", felt very much like "let's try and make a new MJ". Again though that's off to the singles, they really are bangers.
Meh, not my thing.
Some nostalgic songs on here but mostly the songs don't seem to hit as much. Standout tracks: Rock Your Body, Cry Me a River, Nothin' Else
If I had to give aliens one album to understand what early 2000s American pop music was like, this would be a strong candidate. It’s not the best early 2000s pop album by any means, but it’s a good cross section. There’s a couple bangers (the songs you already know coming into the album), a few awkward forays into sanitized R&B, a track or two that are just weird (“Nothin’ Else” ????), and a good amount of filler. The production on this album is glitzy and clever and maintains a pretty high standard of quality throughout, but lyrically and emotionally there is very little to offer. The effect is kind of like a movie set on a studio lot: the façade is eye-catching, but if you peek behind it, there is nothing there. I’d give this 2.5 ⭐️ if I could, but it’s not an unenjoyable listen and the bangers really do be bangin’ so I’ll go 3 ⭐️.
Decent. Makes me feel like I’m at a mall around 20 years ago. I generally enjoy JT when they show up in tv/movies/whatnot, but I do not specifically seek out their music.
Gear: Grado Hemp Artwork: 📸🌩️👨 Production: 🤯🙂👌 Music: ✨💃🕺🎚️🔥🧼 Rating: 💃🕺(💃)/5
Decent
Pretty listenable album with the classics "Cry Me a River" and "Rock Your Body", 3.5/5
I liked the first half but nothing from the back half grabbed me. Rating: 3.4
Not bad for 2000s pop music. Gross at points for sure.
i mean its alright? i feel like a few songs havent held up but the more recognisable songs here are still decent.
Not my type of music, Decade (Grew up in the 00s and didn't like the music then) or genre. But credits due where it is. He has a great voice and an impressive vocal range. some tracks reminds me of Stevie Wonder in tone. But it is very 00s and would be better if the cut the last half because it get very bland fast after the hits,
This is a difficult one- very 'pop R&B' sanitised but with a gritty feel behind it. I think there's a lot more going on here which makes this more worthwhile listening to.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would - Rock Your Body is a great track
Uuh, Justinin musasta tulee aikusuuden ensiaskeleet elävästi mieleen. Rock Your Body oli jumantsuikka semmonen bangeri "yökerhoissa", että oksat pois. Isoimmat radiohitit tuttuja ja huomaamatta jalka tamppaa mukana. Loput välillä ihan ok ja ok.
слишком фальцет и рнб с нотками предаторства. лучшие куски это Тимбаленд + край ми э ривер навсегда моя любовь. даже не знаю…
Some great hits mixed with some duds. His confidence and production shines more on FutureSex/LoveSounds, while this album feels like they are still experimenting with what direction to take him as a solo artist.
I love the singles from this album but man the filler is bad. Some of these lyrics are criminal. The production is too notch though so I see why this would make it. Just about.
Still a solid album. A few tracks here can still be just forgotten about entirely, but those big hits really still hit hard.
Has some good songs, but as a whole very mediocre
Pharrell and Mr. JT on a quest to deliver the slickest 60 minutes of the new millennium.
Ok, ok, hes not Michael Jackson and Pharrell isnt Quincy Jones. But not many people are. This is decent, of its time, pop music that borrows heavily from previous generations to make something fun. All art is theft remember? Some really good tracks here, and some absolute filler as well.
This is a few songs too long, which the hits don’t quite make up for.
Classic 2000s pop. There's some bangers that take me back to college on this album. I could do without the ballads tho.
I only lived through a little bit of Justin's heyday, so I don't have much of a connection to songs on this album. It honestly feels like he's trying be a bad boy white Michael Jackson on this album. Outside of the hits, most songs are serviceable. I'm not going to be listening to them, but I didn't hate most of them. Best Songs: Senorita, Cry Me a River, Rock Your Body, Worst Songs: (And She Said) Take Me Now, Let's Take A Ride
What an asshole
It's not my type of music. For many years I had a very negative image of Justin Timberlake because for me he represents the epitome of this disgusting celebrity culture that exists today (from the 2000s to now). But I'd be lying if I said this album was bad. I'd be lying if I said that at certain moments I wasn't grooving to the songs. At certain moments, Justin's voice (which for me is the highest point of the album's sound) tries to imitate the vocal mannerisms of the late Michael Jackson, of course, with due proportions, this is just a mere influence, and not a copy. But even with these qualities, the album sounds very tiring. The experience I had with this album was as if I had gone running in the street. 1 hour later I'm tired of it and now I want to take a nap.
In all honestly I have no idea why this album is on the list. I feel like his band would be considered more ‘influential’ rather than his solo career. Despite this, it is a fun album. I’ve never considered myself a huge JT fan but i’m not one to say this isn’t a vibe. I’m familiar with the two famous ones, and other than those I don’t believe I’d heard of any of them, but I was bumping along to them all. It’s definitely a conflicting rating because I did really vibe but I just don’t think it compares to a lot of the incredibly significant albums on this list. I feel a 6/10.
The hits are well produced and catchy, and were played on pop stations accordingly. The rest of the album is a Stevie wonder wannabe.
The singles were great but fell off a lot after those.
The singles are better than I'd remembered. The Neptunes did solid work with this one - the tracks that lack their touch are remarkably worse. The weaker cuts give MJ-clone energy and the record itself is much too long.
micheal timberlake
Very much of the 2000s but Cry me a river and Rock your body are still bangers
This sound of the album is what I have in my mind when I think about what Justin Timberlake sounds like.
JT's bubble-gum pop boy band songs are great on this album and that's the lane he should stay in, but when he tries to flex his wings and become the breakout solo singer that this album was designed to be he misses. Nothing against him, but if the author(s) were being true to themselves and wanted a boy band pop album they should've just listed an NSYNC album. 2.5/5
Senorita // Like I Love You // Cry Me a River // Rock Your Body // 3.5/5
I want to be michael jackson is what this album screams.
Popping good
more interesting for its place in the culture, and for its making-of process (which you can see 30 hours of, documented on Youtube), than for the album itself, but it definitely inspired a ton of great songs, and has a couple of truly incredible songs, with other breezy, a little overlong experiments
Brainless but has some enjoyable moments
The singles are generally much better than the rest of the tracks, but Timbaland and Pharrell are absolutely cooking here. JT himself is fine.
I enjoy Justin Timberlake music as much as anyone’s from the genre. This certainly not my favorite genre, but I like his voice and a lot of times his attitude on things. He’s got a couple big pop hits on this album. Not a bad work.
I remember this album. Lots of great, fun dancy tracks but gets repetitive after a while..
Ok, I can't help but like some of this album. It’s his first step away from being a Musketeer. It’s got a hook.
In typical early 2000s fashion, this album is way too fucking long. But that aside, it's honestly pretty good thanks in large part to the superstar producers manning the drum machines and samplers on here. With The Neptunes and Timbaland on production (reminds me: Clipse better be on this 1001 list...), the highlights speak for themselves. The beat on '(Oh No) What You Got' is so damn good, and while I wish it had a rap feature on it, Timberlake coasts on it better than he does on most songs here. When Pusha T and Malice rap over the 'Like I Love You' beat, I was kinda hoping the entire song was just them, canning Timberlake. I was just hoping for some variety from Timberlake on these deep cuts, that's it. Emotionally, lyrically, melodically, SOMETHING. It never got unbearable but at a certain point, like c'mon dude, CHANGE IT UP. The lyrics are sexy, but there is no dirt or edge in a majority of the songs on the tail-end of this thing - they're too safe. I like 'Cry Me a River' - for such a petty song about Spears, I find it quite shocking that it got so high in the charts. 'Rock Your Body' is really sick as well. Still a pleasant listen overall, just in a throw-it-on-in-the-background kind of way. I know Timberlake's later works are quite a bit more acclaimed so maybe I'll check those out.
When this was released I did t even give it a chance- why would I listen to a guy from nsync? One of my friends in Calgary who I played guitar with told me I schools really check it out and said the neptunes and timbaland produced it and they were songs meant for Michael Jackson. When I did finally listen, I secretly enjoyed a lot of it. Senorita, like I love you, what I got, rock your body. The songs were catchy, light, and on in every club on London. Takes me right back to being 24-25. Love the production on it. I don’t listen to the whole album often but will revisit a few tracks. Was actually learning Senorita on piano last weekend cause I thought the intro would be a great way to open a show.
Some classics
It’s undeniable that he made a huge impact from his boy band days and with his solo career. I’m definitely not the target audience for his music but I appreciate his talent. The two hit songs on this one are bops for sure.
Well, it reminds me of a bad part of my life so the music triggers me. But I’ll still give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️
That's not my taste in musik. But ok.
This was ultra 2000s in both the best and worst ways. Justin’s vocals are good enough and the r&b sound is pretty alright enough to make for quite a few catchy songs but between dated lyrics and the overall vibes this album just oozes early 2000s cringe in a way I can’t fully quantify. Cry me a river and rock your body are still fun at least.
funky, feely
Honestly I was so excited for the big hits but I didn't realise the album tracks would be so MUSHY
Fun.
It’s okay I suppose. I have to admit, when Rock Your Body came on I was like “hell yeah!” That’s a jam. Cry Me A River had me singing right along. Otherwise, it’s very much okay.
Pharrell Williams' voice is all over the intro to the first track, but even if it wasn't, you'd be able to tell he produced this in the early 2000s after a few bars. It's got that Neptunes sound. This is 1000x better than N'Sync. This feels like the evolution of New Jack Swing. This music is a hollow imitation of a real artist. Timberlake is a performer and this feels very much like a performance for an audience without any real soul in either the lyrics or music. The Neptunes and Timbaland producing on one album makes this the most 2000s album of all time. Take it from here reminds me of something and I can't place it. I do tend to love white people signing R&B and Soul music. Cry Me a River is a jam and is maybe the pinnacle of Timbalake's style. Rock Your Body is another banger. I give more credit to the producers being at the top of their games though. Timberlake still feels like a product. "Gonna have you nekkid by the end of this song" is delivered like an entitled rich guy knowing that a bunch of gold diggers and fame whores will drop their panties at his command rather than him sounding like the one in charge. Nothin' Else is a little too Michael Jackson...if someone said it was a cover, I'd believe it. This is a Michael Jackson album. Could do without the overly sentimental Never Again to close the album out, it's not a great fit for the rest of the album and it's feeling.
Going back in time to stop the invention of the CD so I can prevent all of the 90s-00s albums being over a fucking hour long and turning the album format from an artistic statement into a random assortment of songs. Didn't go into this with the mindset of a hater, mostly because I know nothing about NSYNC and Justin Timberlake. It was actually pretty good for the first few songs, sort of like diet Michael Jackson vibes, but it just keeps going and going and going. Still weirdly fun though. Might even be a 3/5.
Blandest pop imaginable. It's alright. Not as tiresome as I thought it would be, although I only listened to it as background music. As it's supposed to be listened to, I reckon
the first half is so sex, he literally just frontloaded all the sex appeal because no one could handle more than that without exploding the latter half is so boring so its a 3 instead of a 4
"Justified" is the debut album by American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake. R&B, dance-pop, funk and soul music. Yep. The album was written and recorded in six weeks and at various studios when NSYNC was on hiatus. It was primarily produced by The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) and Timbaland and had guest appearances including Janet Jackson, Clipse and Bubba Sparxx. There were generally positive reviews with Timberlake noted as succeeding as a much more mature R&B artist than his pop music background with NSYNC. Commercially, it #1 in UK and #2 in the US. Pharrell Williams begins "Señorita" by introducing Justin Timberlake. Spanish-oriented and grinding R&B with horns and a cowbell. Williams and Timberlake are pretty much co-lead singers. It's a fun song and gives a Stevie Wonder vibe. The first single "Like I Love You" has a strumming guitar and funky rhythm. Very catchy. This time it reminds me of Michael Jackson. Clipse gives a rapping guest appearance at the end. "Cry Me a River" continues the funk. There's a beatbox rhythm, Arabian-inspired riffs, sounds of water, synths and the wind, backing vocals and chants. Timbaland produced, a lot going on and another very catchy song. JT goes more disco in "Rock Your Body." It's bouncey, dancey with great backing vocals by Vanessa Marquez. Speaking of guests, Janet Jackson makes an appearance on "(And She Said) Take Me Now." More disco and funk. Timberlake goes from whispering to falsetto to layered vocals with Janet. Another very Michael Jackson-esque song. The best songs on this album are the upbeat dancey, R&B and disco ones. Those have catchy melodies and beats. Great production as one would expect. All the guest appearances work. Timberlake has a great voice and seems to work within any style. There's a lot of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson vibes going on. I thought some of slower and more mushy songs didn't work and the album length could have been trimmed. But, overall a very good pop album.
Singles are great but album as a whole is tiresome to listen straight through. Another reviewer nailed it when they said “songs feel long to listen to even if they’re not”
so i suspect most people aren't going to enjoy this one. pop music from over 20 years ago from a figure that has ended up a bit divisive and unpopular in the modern context (as of writing this, he notably was arrested for DWI about a month ago). that being said, i was expecting the worst going into this. justin timberlake doesn't tend to be my kind of music but honestly, this album was alright! the two songs i remember off of this - 'rock your body' and 'cry me a river' are honestly two of the more unremarkable songs here for me. i enjoyed the first two tracks 'seniorita' and 'like i love you' and also the incredibly stevie wonder-esque 'nothin' else' it's not my favorite album ever, but it's better than i expected.
I feel like this album was a hit back when it came out but I didn't listen to it. Was never a Timberlake fan except for his stints on SNL. But there are some classics on here like Cry Me a River and Rock Your Body. It has that early 2000's charm of that sort of hip hop dance type music.
Was a 2000’s pop album which I don’t super love but it is a classic and has bangers so should be Atleast a 3
This will ruin the tour
Maaimmanluokan pop-musiikkia. Vähän liian nostalgista. 3/5
the track “right for me” almost dropped this down to a 1 alone. However the rest of it is so guilty pleasure so fun like this is the shit my mom gave me. Cry me a river changed lives top 3 - cry me a river, rock your body, senorita
Some bangers. Pretty generic pop but a nice reminder that JT is a good song writer
So, I want to start by saying that 1. I like JT 2. This albums has some iconic JT tracks on it, and they hold up But, as far as the album as a whole 1. It sounds like he's still figuring out who he want's to be as a solo artist 2. The really good tracks (you know the ones) are clearly Tim and Pharrell songs that JT just got to sing 3. The rest of the songs sound like NSYNC b-sides or Michael Jackson wanna-be's
3+
The Replacements is one of those bands that seems like it checks all the boxes for me but I'm never fully won over. I appreciate the swings and the work being done here. I just wish I loved it.
Maaaaan
Pop icon of the new millennium. Tons of falsetto, def shows inspiration from MJ, with a cool r&b pop sound. The singles off the record still slap
After two listens, I’m not sure why this album is on the list. Other than the fact that Timberlake succeeded in peeling away from N’Sync to make a decent R&B solo pop album, the singles are all this album has. 3/5 just for nostalgia
A whole lotta big name producers on this one and it shows. A few classics on here. Not something I would put on frequently but 13 year old me would have loved it. Second half of the album not as good as first half.
Decent but not my jam
Only 2 solid songs. The rest were filler
Who gave production like this to him? He does not deserve it. Such a whiplash album quality wise. Señorita - 3.8/5 Like I Love You - 2.6/5 (Oh No) What You Got - 3.6/5 Take It From Here - 2.3/5 Cry Me a River - 3.7/5 Rock Your Body - 4.1/5 Nothin' Else - 3/5 Last Night - 3.2/5 Still On My Brain - 2/5 (And She Said) Take Me Now - 3.7/5 Right For Me - 3.6/5 Never Again- 1.8/5 Total- 2.87/5
My first comment is why so many self references (JT, Mr. JT)? The album feels he is trying to become the new "King of Pop". Not to say it is bad; his talent and delivery cannot be denied.Just a bit too much sugar-sweet pop for me in such a large dose.
I remember Justin making pop cool again, but this album is a bit too long and none of the tracks hit quite as hard as the singles, which are brilliant.
Okay but not particularly memorable. Defines most of this generation of music.
3.5
I didn’t finish it but I’ve listened to this before. It’s a solid pop album
Hmm nah! If it was all as good as Cry Me A River then sure but this was mostly falling way below.
I always enjoy but never seldom him.
Just boring over produced pop crap. Same thing that’s always put out.
cry me a riverrr wel grappig om een keer te luisteren Leuk hoor
JT's probably all I can handle in pop
OK, so hear me out (ha-ha)... Taken for what it is, it's OK-ish RnB / funky pop crossover, with charismatic vocals from Timberlake and immaculate production. On the downside, the lyrics are dreadfully cheesy (prbably by design to appeal to teenage girls), and it's probably a bit overlong for a debut album, but I suppose fans of NSYNC were chuffed to get 60+ minutes of playing time. Most people would have preferred it if the running time was cut by half. But I didn't hate it, the vibe is positive and Timberlake is likeable so the results are middling.
Solid pop album with some timeless hits, I’ve gotta admit it. We could’ve cut out a few songs, Justin, but not bad!
Rock Your Body is his best song, ever, and it’s still a great party track. I have watched a room full of music snobs genuinely dance their asses off to this song. Still slays. This song deserves a 5, but the rest is a solid 3.
Some very catch songs, but overall I'm not the target demographic of this genre.
Some bangers here and there for sure, otherwise decent. And why are JT’s albums so damn long?
5/5 for Cry Me a River, which is only a good song, but is linked to many good memories from 2000s. Rest of the album is way below average though, so I think it's only fair to give it a solid 3/5 as a testament of a banger from my childhood.
The production, while solid, ages the record quite a bit, and I think FutureSex/LoveSounds was a much stronger album melodically. Justified blends together a little, except for the singles, which I don't know if they stand out because I've heard them so much or because they're more upbeat. I don't think I'd pay much attention if I heard this at a party or something, but listening to it alone at home while working is...a weird experience getting to notice all the details lol.
Never expected such an unabashedly slick pop album from an ex NSync to be on this list. Bonus points for being fun and nostalgic. He definitely managed to shed his boy band image with Justified. Second half feels like fillers.
Starts out decent to great (mostly on the instrumental front) but drops off quite a bit in the second half. For being a JT pop album I could hardly recall any song from the backside except for the one that sounds EXACTLY like a Stevie Wonder song (random). 5/10
A solo album from a kid breaking away from the boy band. Side A&B are strong. Side C is weak and very skippable. Side D tries to make an effort to get back in it but comes up short. Multiple hits but can't stand the cheesy, slow songs. Buy this album and throw away the 2nd disc.
It's fine freshman entry for JT as his breakout from the boy band. A couple hits but doesn't hold up over a 60+ minute listen. Its's fine but nothing special, even coming from a big Timberlake fan (both musically and from his extra-curriculars). I'm sensing a theme as a handful of 1st solo albums from former band members appear on this list. Maybe there was some importance in the fact the JT established himself as more than a N Sync boy band member but I personally think all of his other albums belong on the list far more than Justified does. Unless they show up later on the list skip Justified and listen to FutureSex or 20/20 Experience. Far more interesting albums in every facet. 2.65 stars
Some great stuff, some boring stuff. I have no idea what to do with something like "Take It From Here," for example. I guess it's for sex or something, if 20-year-old white boy is what does it for you.
Studienzeit Erinnerung.
In my memory this R&B abum was much better than when I listen to it now. It contains some good songs (Cry Me A River, Rock Your Body), but also a lot of filler. If it was stripped down to 45 minutes it ould have been a 3.5 star album, but the current collection of songs is hardly worth a 3 star rating.
I think he's got talent, but this isn't it.
Few songs were okay. Dragged though.
Justin has some very catchy songs and clearly has talent. I had really only heard one or two of the songs prior to this, so it was interesting to listen to the whole album. Rock Your Body is, of course, the one most people have heard. But I had not heard Cry Me A River which I also liked. I do wonder, though, if Nothin' Else sounding, well, exactly like Paint It Black is a bit too obvious.
Alright
Mostly goofy fun from the overly slick fuckboi extraordinaire himself. Fave track was Lets Take A Ride. I found it to feel the most personal or coming from an artistic place as opposed to a 'what will get these birds out on the dancefloor' which, to no ones surprise, and most peoples delight, this album has in spades. Can't lie, heart of hearts, this isnt really my kinda jam, just a little 'light' lets call it. But I recognize good rhythm and strong performance.
Elite bops abound but the filler is very filler, and he can’t decide whether he wants Latin pop, r&b, or boy band energy
Banger after banger! Me to my youtube algo. You don't know me!
It’s no Trolls
In 2002, I had a two minute conversation with JT on the phone without realizing who I was speaking to. I LOVE Timberlake and I think this album is SWAG fam, but it does not belong on this list. Color me surprised by Justin Timberlake twice.
if you couldn't get laid with this CD on in 2002 you probably soon turned to roofies. The first half of this record is fire, but the second half is such a snooze fest. never tall anyone i like this record or there will be blood.
Some bops but ugh JT
Nostalgia glasses for middle school and high school party tracks.
I have a hard time hating Timberlake’s music here. Never liked the boy band stuff. But the heavy influence of Pharrell Williams’ production and composition is what makes this a successful pop album. It’s that early 90s r&b style that truly compliments his voice, really highlights his strengths. It’s an hour-long “Dick in a Box”. The inherent lack of seriousness works to keep it light and fun. Just really well-constructed pop music. IMHO this is his best work. But, ultimately, Pharrell gets all the credit. Rock Your Body is his best song, ever, and it’s still a great party track. I have watched a room full of music snobs genuinely dance their asses off to this song. Still slays. This song deserves a 5, but the rest is a solid 3.
review def inflated because of rock my body but tell me that song isn't a banger !! 5/10
I’m a sucker -6/10
It’s fine, definitely dated
Its fine I guess. Still to pop for me but it was better than the N'Sync stuff. However being a straight male I am pretty sure I am not the target audience.
Voice is a little annoying but songs are surprisingly creative
Surprised myself when I bought this when it came out - teenybopper groove. Mainly for the opening couple of tracks - but this is really Pharell's record, not Justin's
I really did not think I would find much to enjoy from a Justin Timberlake album, but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a pretty consistent pop album from start to finish, though the tail-end does dip a bit in quality in my opinion. Probably not something I'd have on regular rotation but I'd definitely give it another listen or two.
I know a handful of Justin Timberlake's songs, but this is my first time listening to a full album of his. I wasn't excited to have this album come up today, but it wound up being a little bit better than my expectations. I don't think that JT is a particularly great singer, but his vocal chops are just enough to get by on this album. Lyrically though, this album sound like it was written by a sentient Ryan Gosling 'Hey Girl' meme. "Hey girl, I saw you from across the club, and I think you're fine. Would you like to come back to this suite of mine?" See? I could easily write 60-70% of the lyrics on this album. However, "Cry Me A River" is absolutely fantastic. It's sultry, the rain sounds in the intro really establish the mood, and the horn sounds couple with the rhythm section and JT's falsetto create a perfect R&B pop sound. This is the one song on the album where everything really comes together perfectly. On the rest of the album, it's Pharrell and Chad's production work that do all the heavy lifting. Musically, this album is pretty good, and it has a wide variety of arrangements that kept me somewhat engaged. Culturally, I can see how this album made the list. Like him or not, JT has been a massive force in music and pop culture in general. Sure, he might be a gaslighting piece of shit, but it hardly feels like his reputation has taken any damage at all these last few years, despite what Britney Spears has alleged about him. But I digress. This album is fine, and as easily the most successful former boy band member of the nineties to launch their own career, JT's solo debut is worth one listen, but maybe not more than that.
I didn't like all of the songs but I liked a selection of them, including Senorita and Cry Me A River.
3/5. A much better album than I was expecting. He really has that frontman skill, even through studio recordings. A diverse, mostly serious, and sexy album full of high quality R&B songs. Although not my favorite genre, I can respect the songwriting skill through this album. Not an easy feat to make every song not-skippable. Good stuff.
Not too bad. A bit long. Some real bangers though.
Some of the songs are not bad, but this kind of pop is not really much of my jam.
Das ein oder andere coole Lied dabei. Es hat einen speziellen Vibe. 5.5/10
Old school. More soul than the brothas!
some notable tunes amongst a sea of average. not his best at all, much prefer later stuff
Je n'ai jamais aimé Justin Timberlake, et cet album classique n'est pas pour me faire changer d'avis.
I can't believe I'm about to say this but...I think I'd rather listen to Slipknot? I'm surprised but I didn't find any track on this album to be particularly catchy or interesting. I just couldn't relate to it at all. I do like Sexy Back, though, which I guess is why this is so surprising? Where's the Sexy Back of this album?
I'm of a certain age when these singles were fucking everywhere - probably like the man himself (fnar). The production of Neptunes and Timbaland make these pop songs have that extra something. He may never be the King of Pop but with this album he was definitely the prince for a while. The only tracks that drag are the slow jams/ballads. I may feel like an old man shouting at a cloud, but if only pop nowadays was a varied as this is. The album cover is atrocious though. Best Tracks: Senorita; Cry Me A River; Rock Your Body
Heard of the guy but never really listened. Pop album from 2002. Some pretty vibey songs to be fair, would enjoy on a night out. Not completely for me/library though.
a čuj, ima par klasičnih pop pjesama na ovom izdanju
The few tracks were excellent dance-worthy pop. After Rock Your Body (one of the best pop tracks of the early 2000s in my view), the fun of the album kind of faded for me. The ballad-style tracks (other than Cry Me A River) were particularly weak. Some serious highs and lows, has to be a 3 ultimately.
Starts off strong and has some bangers. Wish I could give this a 3.5.
JT!!!! This is a genre of music that I've never gotten into. I didn't listen to it growing up so I don't have the nostalgia like so many other people do when they listen to this genre. Starting with Señorita, it's fun, catchy, and I like that he's okay being silly on it. The bit where he was telling the ladies the part they were going to sing was funny. Even though this style of singing isn't really my jam it's very easy to recognize how good of a singer JT is. He really did have me nekked by the end of Rock Your Body. Several times during the record I noticed some record pops. I'm curious the recording process for this record. I'm wondering if they recorded, pressed to vinyl, and then recorded the vinyl playing. Or if it's just like artificial record pop dubs. This record is too long. I started getting over it with like 4-5 songs left.
Good
Cry Me a River was my jam in the summer of ‘02 - and that’s me sounding old AF for the record. Might as well give me a spittoon and a gold pan. Seriously, this album sounds deceptively like an MJ album. I guess that makes sense as most of the songs were developed for the Gloved One. It’s nice to see Timberlake on here as he seems such an earnest artist and a huge fan of R&B. I’d give it 2 stars but I’m feeling generous post-holidays - I’ll give it a boost.
I feel like any praise for this album should be redirected to the Neptunes. The production is perfect, the lyrics are a little lacking, and Justin is fine. It’s also a bit long.
It's not Bad and then neither is it a Thriller.
Not a huge JT fan but I can appreciate the appeal. Some really catchy tracks with some less than tracks
Can't deny the singles are banging on thos record
I see what he did there
Another one bites the dust... and another one gone... and I'll have you naked by the end of this song... Girl, I'm gonna get you too... naked by the end of this song... Yep, that's my mash up. Because it's a blatant rip off.
Had dit album niet verwacht. Niet helemaal overtuigd en niet iets dat ik zelf veel zal draaien maar niet afgrijselijk.
Ultra-polished R&B-flavored pop. The hits are good and the rest is at least passable. Album’s too long. Doesn’t hit me hard but worthwhile. Best song: Rock My Body
Ehhh I like rock your body
Much to my amazement I enjoyed the start of this album, but it really faded (or just became samey) after the first 5 tracks. Thought I was listening to Michael Jackson at times. I’ll give it a mid 3 based on how much I enjoyed some of earlier tracks and wasn’t offended by any of it.
Should I admit that I like Mr Timberlake? 'Cry me a River' is one hell of a song, I adored it when it came out 20 years ago. Back then I downloaded it from some dodgy Internet source and played it far too many times, loved the rhythm and his voice, although very high, he can hold a tune as well as put feeling into it when he needs to. The other great single - 'Like I love You'- how to make an acoustic guitar sound good! However, I've never listened to this album in its entirety, the album tracks seem like run-of-the-mill R&B stuff, but as the album progresses it gets better. Currently listening to this on a nice relaxing Eurostar journey (after a shit alfresco Weatherspoon’s dinner on a rainy night in December with a few glasses of wine), even the really overt R&Bness of some of these songs are leaving me feeling chilled (in a completely different way to my dinner). I'd forgot 'Rock Your Body' was on this too, simply a great tune to think about getting up to dance to. For the singles alone it's a 5, the rest is not too shabby, especially 'Last Night' and wow! Love the JJ collaboration '(And She Said) Take Me Now' a definite highlight, surprised that wasn't a single. 'Right For Me' excellent vibe and rhythms sounds so simple and complex at the same time. A high 3, or can I give it a 4? Its a 3, because the last song didn't do it for me, a piano ballad doesn’t seem to be a good fit.
This brings back great youth memories, this came out about the time I decided to stop been an angst teen and give pop music a chance. I do remember the singles fondly but, I did found out quite a while ago that this record is only the singles and should’ve been cut to less than half an hour long. Some of the track are just awful and quite lame. Nevertheless? I’ll give it a 3 just for the massive singles.
The drums are incredibly tight. The title of the album I begrudgingly appreciate the utter depravity of the pun on display. Really great pop production. Timberlake does a solid Michael Jackson impersonation. I don't care for this style of pop.
Above average funk pop album. 3.5
Está bien, me alegro de que no haya ni una sola balada (excepto la última canción)
I guess one thing this album has got going for it is that I'm hearing it one day after suffering through Limp Bizkit. So I'm feeling generous... to a point. Okay, so let's set the table here. Justin Timberlake wants (needs, really) to be taken seriously as a solo artist, so he brings in the Neptunes and Timbaland among others to help craft his debut album. On that level they generally succeed. Production is pretty excellent, if very much of its time. There are some solid pop hooks and a few pretty danceable bops. I imagine this was top tier pop 20 years ago. So what's missing? For starters, songwriting. I'm not coming to Justin Timberlake looking for well crafted lyrics, so it's hard to ding him too much for that. But it's really not helping his case that these songs just feel really brainless. I'm losing IQ points talking about it. It's like eavesdropping on a dumb conversation in the club, interspersed with the occasional heartbreak song. Blah. What else? The vocals, seriously the vocals. I keep seeing reviewers describe Justin Timberlake as a great singer, but he's really not. You guys need to listen to more actual soul music. Try as the Neptunes et al might to dress him up, this is a pretty soulless album, and that's fully on Timberlake. He tries to channel Michael Jackson here in his vocals and he almost gets there, but the ultimate effect is that this feels like what would have been a lesser Michael Jackson album. The backing vocals for the most part are also terrible, which only highlights Timberlake's own deficiencies. Even Janet's brief appearances, which I barely noticed, don't really add value. Why bring someone with her level of talent in, if you're not going to use it? Far from the worst thing I've heard, but this is a 3 at best. I suspect 10-15 years from now, these songs won't hold up well at all. Fave Songs: Last Night, Rock Your Body, Cry Me a River, (And She Said) Take Me Now
I appreciate this next progression of Michael Jackson pop music
This takes me back to, like, middle school dances. This is a scenario about which I have many complicated feelings. Trying to divorce my feelings about that time and about the actual music is a challenge. I think this is all just fine early-2000s pop music, I guess. It's been stuck in my head all afternoon so I'll give it that.
Some good songs, plenty of hits, though Margaret recognized more of them than I did. The only one I very clearly remember is Rock Your Body. Commits the CD era sin of just being too long, and there are some obvious candidates to cut in my opinion. He's clearly a great singer and his sense of humor comes though here and there. Hearing this made me wonder why NSYNC and Backstreet Boys don't appear on this list, yet here is JT, and we've listened to multiple Christina Aguilera albums for example - something against boy bands? Not that I want to hear those albums again but I think it's a fair question.
Oh 2002, what a time. I would have been a sophomore in high school. A Senorita, Cry Me a River, and Rock Your Body were played EVERYWHERE. You couldn't escape Justin Timberlake if you wanted to. While I don't like it, it was very successful at what it was going for. It's almost kind of cute now in contrast to pop music these days. Can't deny that he can sing either. Strong solo debut. Interesting some of the tracks were intended for Michael Jackson but he turned them down. But yeah, definitely don't wanna listen to it except maybe at a party for nostalgia and then it's just kinda funny.
Buried pretty far below the lede on the Wikipedia article for this album is the fact that most of these songs were intended for Michael Jackson and subsequently rejected by him. That makes this album make a hell of a lot of sense, since several of the songs sound very much like MJ songs, especially Rock Your Body. I don't think this is a bad thing in any way, since Timberlake did a great job with these songs and has the voice and charisma to pull them off, but it also undercuts the narrative that features more prominently in the Wikipedia article, which is that Timberlake was writing these songs while on hiatus from N'Sync. Both can be true, but it feels weird to emphasize one so much over the other I wasn't excited to listen to this album, but the fact that it's produced by the Neptunes makes everything better. It's good that they are represented on this list, since they formed such an integral part of the sound of the early 2000s, along with Timbaland, who is also on this album. I don't know that there's much to say about the actual songs. They are all at least fine, with some of them being great. It's a pop album, but I think it would be fair to say that it was also THE pop album of this period 3/5
At last a decent album to listen to. Easy 3*
Listened Before? N Not too bad. Very, VERY early 2000s USA vibe. It's kind of a fun nostalgia trip. There are a few amazing pop bangers here, and the mix of beats and instrumentation is fun. I like this one. The main negative I have is that the second half of the album kind of drags. He would have done well to switch up the style a bit and this may have been considered an all-timer. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist - Senorita, Cry Me a River
So pop and so good for its time but it does not stand the test of time. Still good to go back and listen to cry me a river, which is still a classic
Not my cup ot tea but I understand the appeal. Great production and some of the songs are genuinely nice. He sounds like a discount Michael Jackson but not unpleasant.
Better than I was expecting it to be, never something I would choose to listen to again. Ultimately, it is perfectly well produced disposable pop. I doubt anyone would miss its passing.
I had never listened to this album except catching the odd track here or there in public. It's catchy. I'm not sure it merits the fame, but it's definitely catchy. I'm probably too old for this?
Was excited for this, but then learned it doesn't include 'Dick In a Box' and also it's not very funny. JT sounds like a '00s reincarnation of Color Me Badd.
This is a fairly generic sounding R&Bish album for the most part. I like Rock Your Body the most. I know Cry Me A River was a big hit, but listening to it again I hear nothing spectacular.
There are some well written songs on here, even if its a bit of a meme. The weaker tracks aren't awful either
Very shiny, expensive sounding, great production and vocals, but an awful lot of filler outside of the big hits. Not for me, but a solid 3
Decent pop album from the early 00's - Standouts include Señorita, Like I Love You, Oh No What You Got, and Cry Me A River.
Weird to think this is 20 years old! He's a likeable chap who sings well enough and has good producers in Timberland and The Neptunes. Some good pop hits. Pleasant, easy listening modern inoffensive r&b. Such a huge mistake by Jacko to pass on these songs! Im sure it outs have revitalised his career. Pretty good pop, but just not special enough for 3.5 stars.
R&B. Pop. Soul. Muy comercial.
Love "Señorita," "Cry Me a River," and "Rock Your Body," and while the rest of the album's a little uneven, it's hard to fail when you've got Timbaland and the Neptunes producing. 3.5 stars.
Meneer T heeft best goed naar M.J. geluisterd, en dat kan ik zeer wel waarderen. Niet alles op dit album is even sterk maar er zitten echt heel wat zeer catchy tracks tussen.
Soms funky en best leuk, soms heel zijig.
I've heard some of his songs before and seen him perform on shows like the Grammys, and he's definitely talented and entertaining. This album is okay. I like the style but most of the tracks to my ear seem to be lacking something, not sure what it is. Like they held back or something.
There are a couple of entertaining songs on here but the 2000s era overproduction is in full force. Also, this album goes for over an hour for pretty much no reason. 6/10
Daddy
Buena voz masculina para una sucesión de canciones unas más calmadas y otras con más intensidad. Pop un tanto blandengue. Fácil de escuchar en cualquier momento.
This was kind of the last album I expected to be listening to on my journey through all of these albums. What I'll say is that I wasn't completely blown away, but I was also pleasantly surprised by some of the cuts on this. Justin was already famous before this came out. He didn't have to build up his career from ground zero off of his debut. And I think Justin has a nice voice. I mean, it sounds like any radio-friendly pop singer voice from the 2000's. But that doesn't mean it's not good. He has a falsetto, and he puts it to good use on this album. The closing track is definitely where he shows it off the most. And honestly, any album where you have Timbaland and The Neptunes collaborating on songs together is bound to be good. That trio probably has more hits than any other combination of producers ever. And it's deserved, because they are all truly masters of their craft. The song "Señorita" starts off the album strong. And I love the section on that song where it sounds like Justin is speaking to a group of people at a party and telling them when and how to sing. I don't care what anyone says, "Rock Your Body" still hits just as well as it did the day it came out. And it just hasn't aged for me. It could come on in the club today and I would be dancing and singing along. Some of the other deep cuts I enjoy are "Last Night" and "Take Me Now". I find that I like about half of the album, or like every other song. The ones I'm not into as much aren't bad, they just didn't click with me. The lyrical content of this album is pretty consistent. And by consistent, I mean if you aren't into love songs, don't listen to this. Every song is a love song. It is honestly impressive how Justin manages to sing about the same topics in different ways on so many songs. I enjoyed listening to this more than I thought I would, just because it was a nice break from music I like to listen to a little bit more critically. This feels more like fun background music to put on while studying or doing dishes, and I think leaning into that mindset makes this much more enjoyable.
Some dizzy music. Don't mind it tho.
This album is super over-produced empty-calorie pop, but I can't help but like it. It probably comes from listening to Michael Jackson basically non stop when I was in the second and third grade. I can't say that I ever go out of my way to listen to JT, but I'm never sorry for hearing it in the wild, so this gets a 3/5 for that.
Not bad. Definitely better than I expected. There was a lot of diversity between the songs. It did seem to peter off in the back half though. Overall, I wouldn't ask my daughter to turn this off if she turned it on. 3.25/5
Turn-of-the-century heart-throb pop at its finest. Say what you want about him, you have to respect JT for the career he has made, he’s a true entertainer. Pure listening pleasure for me is like a 2, but he gets an extra star for the nostalgia factor and for the way he makes every 30-something year old woman turn instantly back into a 13 year old girl with his poster on her wall and his CD in her Discman.
I hated how much I enjoyed it, starts strong but loses a lot of steam in the second half.
Not bad. Cry Me a River is a banger. I think what I bump against on this album is that while I find the production interesting and creative, I don’t find Timberlake himself to be that compelling as a singer. Technically, he’s good, but I don’t hear a lot of originality. That makes it hard for me to listen to this and think it’s anything other than fine.
3.75
æ þetta er kynferðislegt rogb. ekki konfekt. snoturlega unnið enda sæguðirnir við stýrið en ekki minn sjóhattur.
As much as I love to hear a full hours worth of Neptunes and Timbaland beats, this pretty much follows the usual formula of big mainstream pop albums. Any singles are packed into the front half of the album, and the rest is filled with pretty average filler. We even get a little piano ballad to finish it off. It wasn't too bad, but it really didn't need to be over an hour long. Every single song is like 5 minutes long, just cut a couple songs completely and trim a few to a solid 3 minutes and I'd be fairly happy.
3.7 - He’s obviously talented but he’s a bit of a tool, isn’t he? Don’t get me wrong, I still like him. I mean, he did “dick in a box”, so there’s that. But doesn’t his whole lady’s man schtick seem a touch cringe in hindsight? Also the way he apes Michael Jackson in his dance moves and his grunts? Or the smooth synth R&B that sounds a little too much like Stevie Wonder (see “Nothin’ Else”)? Still, though it is derivative, this is a fun, danceable pop record.
I wanted to hate this. I expected to give it a single star and move on to something better. But, while there is a lot here to actively dislike, there's also a lot here that forms a compelling argument for JT's enduring presence in pop culture. The songs are mostly dumb, let's just make that clear. The subject matter is shallow and repetitive to an extreme degree. But they're built exceptionally well. There's a deep understanding here of what works and what compels listeners to stick around. Not that I credit JT with that. He's mostly just an excellent vocal talent packaged in a pretty face. But he's managed to pull together a team that knew exactly how to leverage his skills to maximum effect. In the end, I can't, in good conscience, fail the record. I still didn't enjoy it but I also can't hate the skill and, maybe more importantly, the psychological and sociological understanding on display. This is an album that understands its audience and plays directly to what moves them. That's worth some stars.
The singles are bangers and get an easy 3 immediately, but the rest is mostly filler and goes on too long. Still a fun slightly nostalgic listen.
This is better and more consistent than I expected - of course I knew the singles, but the rest of the album holds up okay as well. It's too long, there's a bit too much production on it so it sounds more manufactured than I'd like, but I guess that's part of the appeal. Won't ever listen to the album as a whole again, but pleasantly surprised when I did. 3/5.
Just a very average collection of songs. Yes production is amazing, 2 big singles, but those songs only stand out because of 20 years of exposure. Objectively, they don’t stand out anymore than the other tracks on this album.
Good Album with some big hits but overall, at the runtime of more than an hour, the rest of the songs were just a bit too similar sounding to get 4 stars
incredibly odd - strong songwriting and beats on display here. Feels almost like an attempt at some great producers to create a nice non threatening star. His voice is ok, it's not Michael Jackson as much as he thinks he is. really it's an attempt at creating an edgier pop star who is still nice and cute looking, the stand out tunes are really good but they don't have any of the actual singer's personality in at all. Overall it's still a pretty good listen.
It's a strange album. The music is a mix between R&B, boy band pop, and a huge dose of Michael Jackson. I think the album is best when it's leaning into the MJ style pop, but it obviously can't measure up. Justin Timberlake is a great singer, which this album showcases, but I'm not sure if this is the best display of his voice. The lyrics are fairly basic which is to be expected, but at over an hour, this album is way too long. Overall, it's fine but doesn't quite get to where it needs to.
You know what? I wish I could hate on this, but it's pretty damn solid. JT might not sound the most heartwrenchingly sincere, and the songwriting may be several shades away from personal and moving. But his vocals are pretty smooth and agile, the hooks are sticky, and the production (Timbaland and the Neptunes) is so crisp, clean, and creative. Pretty nice batch of pop songs.
Can't wait, really enjoyed, always love justy timm
I was surprised at how many songs I recognized. I didn't hate "Justified", but it does sound dated, and it should have been shorter by at least 3 songs and about 15 minutes.
Highlights: Take It From Here, Last Night. In a nutshell: written for MJ, made by JT et al. Yep. Many of these songs were written with Michael Jackson in mind. Jackson passed on all of them. Justin Timberlake and his collaborators rejigged some things and voila- first solo album. Heavy MJ influence remains (with some Stevie Wonder thrown in), but add more beats. Yet Timberlake doesn't quite go full Robbie Williams here as a post-boy-band-divorce album. This has more swagger and less ego. And better producers: Timbaland and The Neptunes (aka Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo). It shows its age, sure. As a companion piece, go straight to FutureSex/LoveSound. This is where Justin embodies the line "funny a few words turn into sex". Overall: 3/10
Top : Rock Your Body Flop : Right for Me
Mixed feelings on this album after reading Britney’s memoir. It’s unfortunate that this album is so boring and the only good song is the one he wrote calling her a crybaby post-breakup. Rock Your Body is good, too.
Didn’t like it then, don’t like it now. Ageless cringe. 2 stars because some of the beats are fun
Music for sleazy assholes but some decent enough pop at times, 3/10.
Hrikalega boring plata.
corny af but, I have to say - some songs had good background.
This album is boring af,like two good songs and the rest is filler. It's not bad but goddamn there's almost nothing of worth here
Not the worst out there, but doesn't catch me in any real way
Look I respect it, but I definitely don’t like it or this era of pop music. I like Timberlake as a person. He’s funny on SNL when he hosts. Not for me. Couple tracks. 2/5
I recognise all the singles. Some of the cringiest lyrics i’ve ever heard.
Listened more than once during work, some hours later I cannot recall a single sound.
Why is this over an hour??? Timberlake is a much better actor than singer
Meh
It’s what his audience wants, but it’s laughable or cringey most of the time.
I appreciate it's cultural significance and some of the songs are kinda catchy. I was never really a huge fan though.
Not a tremendous fan of Justin or this white boy early noughties r &b. Cry Me a River and Rock Your Body are both decent songs, but that’s about it.
Very poppy and quite a Michael Jackson sound, this isn't my thing, but probably one of the best in brand.
sometimes I was nodding my ahead along with the music, I guess it's fine.
I cannot comprehend how a Justin Timberlake album (any of them at all) made this list. You could've just listed any late 90s R&B album and it would've been both Better and More Fun to listen to. I don't want to listen to this babyface talk about wanting to fuck. Nobody wants that. Can't believe how much airtime so many of these songs got.
Came to this with an open mind but it really isn’t for me. Just a bit boring. Super produced. Bit clean. Cry me a river an interesting track. Got some corners in it. (I know what I mean, like something makes you want to listen a bit closer, zoom in, turn the corner to find out what it is. Nice layering of tracks. Yep it’s a hit so maybe there’s familiarity bias. I don’t think I’d purposefully put this on again. 2.5 feels harsh but true.
I think I’ve given 2 stars to every pop album from this era, but maybe this one will surprise me and deserve less. All the best parts of this album feel like things that didn't quite make it onto N.E.R.D.'s debut record, "In Search Of..." so The Neptunes just used them here. Actually, THAT record should be on this list if we want to give The Neptunes some love. They were really cooking in 2002, and the only reason this album has any residual value. If there's an instrumental-only version of this record, I'd like to listen to that. Fitting that this album ends with "Never Again", as that's exactly how I feel about it.
Cry me a River is s good track. The rest of this album is super lazy.
There was a moment, closer to its release, when I would have rated this pretty highly. Timberlake's voice is very charismatic. The Neptunes and Timbaland's production is infectious. In 2002, this felt like a fireball to pop music in the best way, and those SNL stints bought him a lot of goodwill from people who rolled their eyes at whatever N Sync was. It's not aging well, partly because it sounds so 2002, and partly because Timberlake is undermining his charisma and goodwill at every chance he gets. But the honest reason I'm rating this low is that it comes the day after I was served John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme," and this is no "A Love Supreme." And when I say it's no "A Love Supreme," I don't mean it in the Abe-D'Catfish-in-Bojack-Horseman-"because-they-already-made-Casablanca-and-this-is-a-different-movie" kind of way.
Wow this is not for me, just hated this album and I hated the delivery/production so much. It’s not the worst album I’ve heard so far. But it’s definitely in the running. I can concede that “rock your body” is WILDLY catchy. I just hate it, I really wanted to give it a chance, and I feel like I did, but this album is exactly what I hated in grade school/middle school, and that just hasn’t changed. One catchy song can’t stop an album from being this shallow. Also I was sort of irritated with JT, here’s why, I didn’t like it at first, but when the song “right for me” got to the rap near the end, I was sort of woken up over by that rapper, but THERE IS NO FEATURE. Like how is the best part of your song not getting credited with a feature? I can also concede that despite hating the production style, the vast majority of the songs are painfully catchy instrumentally, like the song”let’s take a ride” super catchy little beat in that song. Honestly I think this whole album could’ve been great if there was more variety in vocals, or frankly, just no JT. I might really like it more that way. So the album as a whole did nothing for me but the one track I did save was “let’s take a ride”, make of that what you will.
I just don't enjoy Justin Timberlake and find him to be a culture vulture
This is a pop/R&B album with that early 2000s flavor. It was kind of boring to me because the beat was pretty much the same throughout. The only exception was "Like I Love You". That one sounds the most unique and I recognize it as a radio hit, and it's a decent song.
I actually quite like Justin Timberlake’s music, but I find this album a bit monotonous. Two stars...
Took me back to highschool, outside the singles that are bangers, this is entirely forgettable.
I can't handle vocals that try too hard. And this is basically a Michael Jackson album. Rock Your Body is a good song though.
Before Justin Bieber, there was Justin Timberlake. I would award this album 3 stars, however I’m deducting one for what he did to Britney.
Listened to this the day after watching Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping so may be a little jaded but didn't enjoy this. So many of the songs felt like an endless bridge in search of a melody
idk i just am not really a JT girl. he kinda freaks me out......
JT plays the character of scorned fuckboy on this album that brings together the biggest pop/R&B producers and writers of the era. There are some good tracks but Justin's performance feels gross to me.
I thought I would enjoy this more but it felt like the same one over and over.
I remember when this came out, and how it sounded fresh. Maybe due to the latin vibes it still sounds fresh in many ways, although production is very 00's. Ok pop, but no songs that would resonate to me. That's why only 2 stars.
Tää ei taaskaan ollut mun juttu. Kuuntelin läpi, mutta ei tästä jäänyt mitään käteen.
A few good tracks but the rest just sounds like filler from a mediocre Michael Jackson album
Just stick a screwdriver in my ear please! Nothing worse than a rich white kid trying to sound like he grew up in the inner city.
2002 review....I really like it, makes me want to get up and dance. He is so cute and Brittney did him wrong. He has a great voice and the production is awesome. 4/5 2026 review....ummm its catchy, Pharrell really knows how to write a catchy dance song and produce an album. Did Brittney really do him wrong or were they just young kids and he exploited her in a time when everyone thought he could do no wrong? Because your track record of being an advocate for females (justice for Janet) isn't great and would lead me to think you just figured out how to make yourself a bigger star. You are a bomb dancer but so were the other four guys you rose to fame with. Beyond the radio hits, I was bored 2.5/5 2002 Justin didn't know better and was living in a world that helped him thrive and he might not have known it. 2026 Justin is still living in a world that helps him thrive but now he knows it but acts like he (and he alone) are the reasons he is famous. The title of the albums seems to say it all....Justified, he feels Justified and I am not sure he should
I got tired of this album 3/4 of the way through it. Not horrible but monotonous. Two stars.
I tried. But soooo dull, soooo long.
Just seems like a playboy boy, without much depth, and without the ability to transcend like Michael had.
Great voice and production, but, like all the 00s pop on this list, it’s about 2 or 3 songs too long. So much filler.
this was definitely cooler back in 2002, not so much these days
You know what. I was looking forward to this one but it really doesn't hold up well. Very dated.
The inclusion of this on this list has aged like milk. Don't get me wrong I like pop through the ages - a good pop single fine, cry me a river and rock your body are ok. But an album, 60 minutes of this, messed up my morning. My thoughts have all been said in the reviews already; M Jackson obsession, popular white boy, competent production. Fairly vapid, paper thin if well made pop, too long to maintain any quality. And as I'm not a fan of Jacksons brand of pop, no, I didn't need to hear this. Edit the book and take it out. 2 Star
Fine
The mixing/production overall is pretty good, and is definitely the main positive of the album. The backing has some real punch, "Right For Me" and "Senorita" being key examples. Musically, the main interest for me comes from the fact that several tracks make heavy use of beatbox/a capella style for pretty much all of the backing. I actually find it quite cringe inducing, personally, but I didn't even particularly notice it when this album actually came out, so that's obviously a modern reflection on the music. Lyrically, it's pretty terrible. The album goes on for way too long. It's boring. Pretty unimaginative. As far as singer/songwriter albums go, it's pretty crap - Justin's voice isn't terrible, but there's only 1 song ("Never Again") where it really felt like it was properly showcased. Production scores some points, but not enough to save it from a 2.
Hade nog bara hört hitsen innan men nä, det här hade jag inte behövt lyssna på.
⭐️⭐️
I will say this: this album made me miss a time when you had to have knockout singing ability to be a pop star. I also admit that I really like quite a few Justin Timberlake songs. None of them are on this album, though. I don’t hate this, but I don’t think it needs to be on here when JT has at least two albums that are much better.
Rating solely based on nostalgia factor. Some of these are soooo cringe, looking back. We thought they were so cooll lolllll
Missed opportunity for him to call this album “justinified”
I’m not listening to an hour of this as my 100th album
I tried, I really tried.
I really don't think this album belong to this 1001 albums list. + Pharrel and Timbaland are clear step up from Max Martin (and *nsync) for me + Senorita, Rock your body and Like I love you are good singles and first 2 were on heavy rotation in nightclubs back in the day. - Other than those few songs, I don't think this is really that good album
Just sort of corny tbh 4.1/10
Rock your body and cry me a river and a bunch of crap
man this is uneven
Pop. Not my thing.
Cry Me A River is a banger. There are also a couple of other good songs on the album. The production is stellar. However, there is just too much filler to justify the 1 hour plus running time. And Still on My Brain might be in my bottom 10 songs ever
Meeh
R&B. Is it Justin Timberlake or is it Michael Jackson? Apparently the producers of just over half of the tracks on this album used songs that were rejected by Michael Jackson. Sounds like any of the other many R&B albums from this period, not bad, but nothing exciting.
Sibling unnecessarily and repetitive, find something else to sing about matey.
Ok, it wasn't all bad. But Jesus Christ that "sexy" voice he does makes my skin want to jump off of my body. This was hard to listen to at times, I'm sure it's just dated, but quit calling me "mami" Justin
I’ve probably said it too many times to bear repeating but the list just misses my tastes again. They could have chosen Timberlake’s very solid sophomore effort, FutureSex/LoveSounds. Instead they choose his lackluster, uneven debut. Admittedly the actual quality of the production is on point. I haven’t looked it up but it sounds like Pharrell Williams and/or The Neptunes at their height of influence. The songs are mostly unremarkable and the last song (Never Again?) is unforgivably cheesy and has no place on this album at all. Try again list.
A collection of well produced tracks with JT singing over them. I don’t love JT’s voice, but he can sing well. I feel like this is more of a “party album” or something than any sort of contribution to the musical arts.
Listening in 2026, this sounds so dated. It's corny, tries too hard with thr "hello ladies" vibe and the Timbaland production is banal. "Rock Your Body" is okay, "Like I Love You" is catchy and "Cry Me A River" is passable pop (if a bit overplayed at this point), but the rest is nothing special. "Take It From Here" is an early nadir from which the album struggles to recover. This is not groundbreaking or even that good. JT's follow up album was far more revolutionary and easily deserves a spot on this list.
huh. the call and response is certainly something. what else does Mr JD have for me? Well i like the way you move. some moments sparked joy. But overall, didnt feel particulary groovy nor tapped into his vibe. A one and done, with rare revisitation to the hits.
There’s undeniably a couple bops in here. Not what I really fancy listening to a whole hour of though.
Just not a pop music person, not something I would actively seek out to listen to, some classic commercial hits for the supermarket aisle
Not bad in places but not good either
not even the neptunes can save this slimy comphet ass album. I'm glad we've left this era behind
Very meh, and unremarkable. Not necessarily bad, but very little that pulls me in. Typical of the time period.
Record feels flat and boring. Also pretty dark sounding. Lacking life.
I'm right in line with everyone on this one. Great production, sounding like MJ but missing it badly, getting dull fast.
I can't imagine anyone other than teenagers actually enjoying this music and I think people usually like JT's early albums like this because of nostalgia from their youth. I didn't grow up listening to this so for me it's just bad. He uses a lot of falsetto in a tone that I really don't enjoy and the lyrics make me cringe a bit. Overall, I just can't take this music seriously and one hour feels very long. The production of the album and backing tracks actually seem decent though. I don't have a problem with that aspect.
Boy, did he have a lot to say on this album.
Listening to Justified now is a real trip down memory lane, but also a bit cringe-worthy. The Neptunes and Timbaland still make some killer beats from that early 2000s era, but the whole album feels like he was trying to be the next Michael Jackson, you know? It did a good job breaking away from the boy band image, but it relied a lot on stuff that already existed. The singles are still bangers, but the lyrics and the whole vibe is kind of embarrassing now, such as the call and response part in "Senorita" and the beatboxing in "Rock Your Body" not to mention the connotations of the whole "get you naked by the end of this song" line and his appearance at the SuperBowl with Janet Jackson... Overall, the album hasn't aged well. It's got a bunch of filler and feels a bit empty, even though it's super polished. It was a big deal back then, but now it just feels stuck in 2002. It's more of a time capsule of radio friendly pop than something that's really special. It just feels like a product.
This sounds like a high priced project with top end producers of its time used to prop up a budding pop star with above average vocals. I guess it’s a quintessential 2000s pop album. Funny note: when they were making this, JT was listening to Earth, Wind and Fire with Pharrell and was like “they never heard a white boy sing like this before”😂😂 With that said, Cry Me A River will always be a pop staple, while Señorita, Like I Love You, Rock Your Body were all big hits at the time (another fun fact: Rock Your Body was originally for Michael Jackson, who turned it down). While there are some catchy songs, this album in general is lukewarm… Justin Timberlake’s singing and dancing always underwhelmed me.
That would have been the best rockbuster if he didn't say river.
While I can appreciate his talent, this is just not my cup of tea. I'd be interested in trying a more recent album to see if perhaps there are any stylistic changes I might like.
Tässä on jotain hassulla tavalla nostalgista vaikka en oikeestaan oo Timberlakea kuunnellut. Pari biisiä tältä levyltä on tosi tuttuja jostain yläasteajoilta ja niitä luukutin sillon paljon 😅 Ei kyl muuten oikeen toimi.
To me it is a pop album which tries to be more than that in a lot of different directions, but failing in all of them as well. The end result therefore is an album with little to no direction. 2/5
Seems more appealing to teenagers
Was never a fan of the guy's music but I won't deny his talent. Still, this is an above-average 00s pop album at best.
A moment to gripe: I've heard five albums by/with women in over fifty albums and this broccoli-headed, genre-robbing twerp lands a spot with Justified? Sigh. I don't really have beef with JT. The production is good, and I respect that he writes his own music. There are lots of reasons to include albums on this list. I suppose if you were feeling uninspired and trawling the Billboard Top 100 for ideas for your exceptionally long list, you might pick this for being slightly more interesting than other popular aughts albums. Timberlake is similar to Taylor Swift in that they both know how to write a popular song and be a star, but their commercial success is not a direct reflection of their musical abilities. Oh, to be a young, beautiful product supported by the machine.
This album is cheese. JT singing about banging for an hour doesn't do it for me. He's kinda whiny on this album and I dislike parts of tracks where he talks to the audience. I know this was a big album back in the 2000s, but I don't think it's aged particularly well, nor is it anything I really want to listen to again. Everyone knows "Cry Me a River" but everything else on this album has rightfully faded into obscurity. 2/5
Didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would but not my thing
The best songs reminded me of boring Michael Jackson songs.
Overall: 4/10 Despite a few catchy songs, I just found this to be way too corny for my tastes. Justin has nice voice and the production is good, but it's very 2000's. Fav Song: Rock Your Body
Meh. But a lot of meh. Almost an overabundance of meh, but it doesn't even do that.
This was amazingly front-loaded. When I saw Justin pop up I figured I would be rating this low. However, the first twenty minutes or so took me down nostalgia alley, and I was even considering giving this four stars. Then it took a dramatic slide to slushy filler for the last 20-30 minutes, and so I'm going with two stars.
Bye, bye byyyyye…. Oops wrong entity.
Sorry JT…
