Reviews (page 5 of 8)
Good album - enjoyed it - thought China Girl was an excellent version - just going to research when this album was released and therefore who did it first - Iggy did it first 1977(him and Bowie co-wrote)!
Not the best from Iggy but still very solid, lots of interesting stuff here
Better than lust for life
Sounds a little too much like Bowie, but...
Not normally an Iggy Pop fan, but this was quite listenable to.
Not my favorite Iggy Pop album (my preference goes to "Lust for Life", and I usually prefer angry Iggy to stoned, sad Iggy), but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Putting aside Bowie’s influence (or even direct intervention), it’s a mixed bag of really good songs (I love « Nightclubbing » and « Mass Production » are fantastic) and half-hearted efforts (« Funtime »...). Nothing sounds really bad, but nothing sounds extremely original either. I probably don’t know enough about the context to be fair, though. Another « morning album » to slowly wake up without having to think too much.
Amazon only provided the song “Funtime” from this album, so that’s all I heard. I would’ve liked to listen to the whole album though, due to David Bowie’s involvement and influence. Based on what I heard, I will give it 3 stars.
Sister Midnight: 4/10, good instrumental Nightclubbing: 4/10 for the guitar solos Funtime: 5/10 (the shoutings tho😭) Baby: 2/10 not impressed China Girl: 7/10 great instrumentation, cheesy lyrics Dum Dum Boys: 8/10 hear me out this one was actually good Tiny Girls: 8/10 Mass Production: 7.8/10 MASS PRODUCTION fr Overall: The production is really good. As i went far, i appreciated it more. Not very known with punk, maybe that's why it was hard to blend with it. Didn't really like the vocals but it's 70s, understandable. The Instrumentation Instrumentation is GREAT, especially guitar solos. 7/10 (first time listening)
It's Iggy, his music feels more or less the same, but not a bad thing.
Okay
David Bowie, but more punk. While I really hate the first part of that, the second part is something I really love. Definitely not on par with his work with The Stooges, but it's generally more interesting than Lust for Life as a whole. Not that I'm personally going to revisit this any time soon as it's a bit too artsy-for-cred-not-sincerity for me, I at least appreciate that Iggy Pop has a diverse palette.
6/10, unique sort of sound, had a deeper voice than I expected, ‘China Girl’ and ‘Mass Production’ were a highlight. Ballads. Layers of loud and sort of eerie instruments.
It was a fun album, never heard it before. Didn’t realize Bowie was involved until after the fact, but I could definitely heard the Bowie influence on it.
7/10
First time hearing this and actually way better than I expected. Love the opening two tracks and china girl. You can hear Bowie’s influence all over this.
A poor mans Bowie on this album
favorites: China Girl, Nightclubbing, tiny girls Meh
Vocals need some improvement, but the instrumentals were great. Really bad start but ended it strong, surprisingly enjoyed this album. Favourite Song: Mass Production
Started off not great and then just got better. His voice also started to grow on me a bit. 3/5 That weird dying ice cream truck beat and the end of the last song is also awful but sometimes sounds good. idk lmao this shit is all over the place
Iggy's solo work tends to be a mixed bag. I generally prefer the Stooges. Nightclubbing and China Girl are definitely classics. The rest is kinda forgettable. 3/5 #122

It was ok, I didn't enjoy it that much
This is just a Bowie album with a different singer, and it shows. The songs aren’t particularly suited for Iggy’s talents until “China Girl” where he starts to move to multiple registers instead of just mumbling his way through an instrumental. Bowie singing all these would be better, I think. It’s not a bad album but the songs drag on in the way a hangover does. Just a bit longer than you expect and for no good reason, and by the end of it you barely even notice. I do like the last 4 tracks but half an album doesn’t make a great record, especially this short. I’d give it a 2.5 but I can’t so I’ll round up.
This just wasn't that compelling for me. Iggy Pop comes with a strong reputation, but it seems like vague experimentation. The single bright spot was hearing/discovering China Girl on this album. Looking into it, it was co-written with Bowie. In fact, Bowie recorded a version for Let's Dance to help Iggy Pop financially. I actually really like the version on this album. A bright spot, for sure.
Very glad to see my first Iggy Pop album pop up. Interesting to read the place of drug addiction and Bowie in this album. And a mix between James Brown and Kraftwerk seems pretty spot on! Such a different sound to the little that I know of The Stooges. Can really hear Bowies influence, and some, even writing it off as an Iggy album at all, as a result. There is a kind of goth, futuristic vibe, which feels quite slow and dragging. Led to it feeling a bit ‘meh’ and not really grabbing or exciting me.
Never listened to Iggy Pop before except I did see him live once at Gröna Lund. I did not understand the music then and now I believe it is just not my genre. But I can understand that many people like it and it's nicely done but not something I would listen to.
3 - normally really like iggy pop but this was just ok
Shit, lenge siden sist. Nostalgisk gjenlytt
Interesante
Just okay...
Sehr Bowie-mässig.
So idiotic but not idiotique
So Bowie and Iggy decamped to Europe after the LA snowstorm and this was the result....kind of megaton glam that set the Template for Bowie's Low that he recorded afterwards, but released before. The music is stripped and claustrophobic, its cars cruising round Berlin at night driven by men in sunglasses. A bit baggy though - I think it sags in the middle - but great at its best, even though I sort of miss the raw punk energy of The Stooges . I would give it 3 and a half, but that's not an option so I'm going for 3 as I want to set the bar high....
It surely doesn’t sound like a mix between Kraftwerk and James Brown. (That’ would be the sounds of Afrika bambataa maybe?). It sounds like a slower, murkier and heavier David Bowie album. Prefer Iggys other album from 1977, Lust for Life. More straight forward.
I’m going to give it a 3, but just barely. It was fine, but kind of droney and way more boring than I expected. I got a Stooges album that blew me away, and this album had nowhere near the kind of energy I was expecting. It was kind of like a Lou Reed album. I don’t know. It was fine, I guess.
I've never listened to Iggy Pop, but I usually love Bowie. This album just didn't quite catch me. Part of it is Iggy's voice. But it felt a lot blunder than other Bowie albums.
Ok
I enjoyed this one a fair bit. Yet another one I'm not sure I've ever listened to before, but it was very unique and interesting to hear. Quite a bit of that early like rock-into-pop crossover but a good bit of some of the, for lack of a better phrase coming to mind, the like "spooky trippy" kind of sound? Which makes sense seeing it was produced by Bowie.
You can definitely clearly hear the Bowie influence in this album. The instrumentation is really good, and I'm enjoying that a lot, but I don't think it really matches up with Iggy, his voice, and his general style. I think it's honestly pretty close to being a very good album, but it just misses the mark. Like, I liked a lot of little bits, but it never really came together to be a complete album. I was even caught off-guard with some really great moments, like the beginning of "Tiny Girls". Favorite Song(s): China Girl, Tiny Girls
was good, liked the cover of China Girl and dum dum boys - 3
The music on this record is often stripped down and minimal, and to the degree that this album succeeds, it does so largely on the strength of Iggy Pop's personality. "Dum Dum Boys" is the high point of this album, a track in which Pop looks back on his days with The Stooges.
Not my favorite, i liked China Gril and Nightclubbing. Bot overall it felt kinda boring
Mass production is really a nice track and worth itself 3 stars, album is average
Definitely better than i thought. Sounds more Bowie than I was expecting. Better than the stooges. Decent
I understand the stage presence, I'm less sure of the appeal of the recorded music.
That was certainly an album. Didn't know that China Girl was originally by Iggy Pop and David Bowie writing it together. Mass production at the end was the best song with its really ominous background tones the whole time
Iggy. Bowie's bff for a while. Iggy used to scare me when I was young, in my 14yr old mind he was 'gross' and a 'druggie'. Then, about 7-8 yrs ago, I had a translation job where I had to translate a very long interview with Pop for a book on Bowie and him in Berlin etc and in Japan, now I love him. Super lovely and now if you listen to BBC6 music you can hear his weekly show.
Iggy! His energy is infectious. It's raw, wild, and I love the cavernous sound.
The sound of exploration. The sound of transition. The sound of recovery (there was an attempt). Side one seems to exist out of space and time. The mix of Bowie's extra controlled experiments and Iggy's primal sensibility somehow works. And works well. Side two gets a little dirgy. But a tip of the hat to all parties - this definitely launched some ships in the coming years.
6,5/10 Highlights Sister Midnight China Girl
The production is great, but it doesn’t really grip me. It's atmospheric with a cold landscape, and it naturally feels like an extension of Bowie's Berlin era projects. China Girl really sticks out. Best song: China Girl Worst song: Baby Cover check: Iggy trying to cosplay as artsy Bowie gone wrong, it just looks like he's on crack
Decent enough.
something not to go back to but glad to have listened
No huge opinion on this one - sort of like a grimier Velvet Underground. Not bad.
Big fan of Iggy's work with the Stooges. Solo stuff is not bad. This is ostensibly a Bowie record with Iggy on vocals. Fun fact: Greg Shimonek is the biggest Iggy fan I know which means something although I'm not sure what
This was surprisingly wacky on face value but makes a lot of sense when you find out Bowie was a major contributor and it’s probably generous that only Iggy makes it onto the main artist credits. I didn’t dislike the weird mixture of iggy’s vocals and the synthy, Bowie-esque (and actually Bowie in some cases) backing but it didn’t leave me wanting more. Thought the final track pushed a bit too far on the weird factor.
Burbles along in the style of an Iggy Pop record. Not the worst, not the greatest.
Jangly and gothic, a little bit of The Cure, a little punk, a lot of groaning sweetly, I went to refer to the "China stylings" of a song and then saw it was titled "China Girl," so it's all making sense to me now.
Not what i expected, I suspect largely due to the influence of David Bowie. Overall a pretty listenable album and I will give in on this being on the list as it was a transition for Iggy Pop.
Sounding a good bit like Bowie here, apart from the song that Bowie also did. Some great tracks near the end. 3.5 stars.
It gives me David Bowie vibes. It's okay, even though the second half of the album lacks any fun songs. To this day, the only Iggy that brings back warm memories is Iggy Koopa. Favorite Track: "Nightclubbing".
Ок
Favorite Track: Sister Midnight
Punk, but not too much, not too little.
I find it cool, but I also think it falls a bit short of being great. Seems like Bowie kept all his best songs for his own contemporaneous albums
Hmm ok.
Hmmmm. This is going to be the biggest of 'alright' for me. Iggy Pop's voice is really something you need to get used to.
Oddball in a cool way, not totally my thing
Amazing album cover and title combo. I've been meaning to watch this so I'm glad I got it. It's pretty good. Not as great as "Lust For Life" but it has its moments. Favorite track: China Girl 3.5/5
……interesting? Is it rock? Is it punk? Is it funk? Is it poprockpunkfunkinfusion? Yes?
Heard it before. You can really feel Bowie on every single song of this album 3/5
Not what I expected, quite weird really. Pretty alright with that though. Another artsy album, strange mixture of tones, textures and vocals. Like his radio show too. 3.3
I dont mind the album but the slow backdrop does get a bit repetitive over time. Its like a slow riff pattern on repeat. Some songs are a little David Bowie esk. Seems quite modern for the time with the use of synth etc. 1 or 2 songs a 4 but majority make this a 3 for me.
Listened to this one blind and first impressions were that it was pretty cool. Quite Bowie esque.. as the album progressed it sounded more and more like Bowie and when I got to China girl I finally caved and read the overview... The problem I have with this album is that although it's quite a cool groove, with gravelly but not entirely unenjoyable vocals, David Bowie exists. So I'm left asking "Why don't I just listen to some Bowie".
Pretty good - nothing remarkable though and very forgettable.
weirder than worth it
Never listened to this before. Has a good combination of two imaginative creative powers. We're having fuuuun. The lyrics run succinct snapshots of repetitive random experience, the droning electric guitar following along, the killer bass demanding deserved attention. Few variations--keep it simple, keep it straightforward.
Actually found myself enjoying this one. Iggy Pop is typically not for me, but there were some hits. Overall- decent album
I gave this a few listens but just couldn't come aroundnon it. I generally like the Stooges and David Bowie but this version of Iggy just doesn't do it for me.
Having some familiarity with The Stooges, this was way mellower than I expected. I liked it alright. I liked Bowie's version of China Girl better, though.
Doom dadoom dum dum! I enjoy the simple but super clean bass lines. "Baby" clearly has that Kinks inspiration. Which is fine because that's an awesome bass line. Overall album is pretty good. Not absolutely mind blowing, but enjoyable.
Like the vibe and sound but not so much the overall cadence and lack of consistency in delivery. Low 3.
Bowie + Iggy
Solid. The sounds are quite conventionally predictable and in my opinion foreshadow 80s early pop - even though some lengthy songs are kept. It's just Iggy, Bowie and this rocky (literally, not too much in sound) bridge between the 70s and 80s. Fascinating musical period and this album reflects it finely.
Droning, lo-fi music. Iggy Pop is his own character and has such an uncanny sound. He's pop but with a melancholic vocal presentation. It's such experimental music and I love the impact that it has had throughout the years, hearing how it has influenced the likes of other artists that have come after Iggy. Solid record and a landmark artist in music history.
It was alright, I can understand why people enjoy it so much
классическое ревью: не такой ужасный как бывало у Игги. можно было не читать что он с Боуи тусил во время записи, это и так слышно)
Gear: Grado Hemp Artwork: 📸🫲🤪 Production: 🤛😊👌 Music: ⚡️🎨😎 Rating: 🌇🌃🌆/5
I enjoyed the sax, bass, horns and melodies, but still nothing making me say "oh yeah", so it falls just around average for me.
David Bowie praticamente grita nesse álbum, tão parecido que este álbum é com ele! E realmente, Kraftwerk fez história nessa época, tamanha as referências à banda!
I'm an Iggy fan. This is in large part a Bowie album. It does shape the rest of Iggy's career. Is it great, no. Is it good, yes. How good?
This was fine. I didn’t hate it. But I also didn’t love it. It gets a 3 for “Nightclubbing” alone.
This was an ok Bowie album with weird vocals.
Not his best
Interesting as a historic document- have a soft spot for Iggy after seeing him live. Fingerprints of Bowie are all over this album, and that's never a bad thing.
Pretty good.
I don't like Iggy Pop, but this is one of the best I've heard of his.
decent
Doldið leiðagjarnt en solid plata samt sem áður. 3,4.
too loud for me in the morning not my style
good
An alright album, I liked Funtime and Baby the most.
This is clearly just Bowie’s fourth Berlin album. His fingerprints are just littered all over this thing, including the cover art. I’m really not sure what Iggy’s post-Stooges career would look like if wasn’t mooching off of one of the greatest song writers of the past 50 years. All I know is that the quality of his songwriting fell flat on its face once Bowie was out of the picture. With that said, this falls under the era of post-punk music that just doesn’t do it for me. I wish I liked this sound because there is so much of it out there, but it just doesn’t align with my soul. Even with Bowie’s help, it just doesn’t grok. I can listen from the outside and understand why this would be a damn masterpiece to some. It’s just not there for me. 3.3/5
Some interesting tracks.
I’d never actually listened to an Iggy Pop album all the way through before. Now I have.
Yeah, not really my thing, but ok
Essentially a David Bowie album, which has some good moments. Giving it a 3/5 after one listen but will listen again. I had no idea China Girl was originally released in 77. Only knew about Bowies version in 83
Thoughts before listening: Iggy Pop is one of those rock stars that has always been cooler than he is enjoyable to listen to for me. Most of the Stooges stuff, and a lot of his solo stuff as well, is just so sloppy and I dont know, grimey or something, that its hard for me to listen. There are certainly gems mixed in with the ugliness, but overall its not something I have a ton of interest in listening to. That being said, I know this is one of his more popular releases (perhaps associated with Bowie or Lou Reed?), so I am excited to try it out. Review: Okay so this was produced by David Bowie...and you can tell. This sounds quite a bit like Bowie's output around this time like Low albeit perhaps more grimey and punk adjacent to meet Iggy Pop's vibe. Like my earlier assessment, this is definitely too grimey to fully win me over although I'll add a couple songs to the playlist: "China Girl" and Nightclubbing". 3-stars
its crazy how no matter the genre, men in the 20th century just had to sing about “little”, “tiny”, “young girls” aka teenagers. Pretty cool though. I’d care more about Iggy Pop is self-mutilation and the reminder of it didn’t give me the willies.
Sort of a Bowie album with someone else singing, kind of like Low but not quite ready. A set of songs that are not quite right but reflect a mood that led to other good/great music. I'm not a natural fan of Iggy's voice though, which doesn't help. You hear China Girl knowing the Bowie remake and that's the gap in talent between the two.
this was okay
***An ok album
Thought it would be worse than it was but was pleasantly surprised. Not something I would normally listen to but I did like it.
I always leave an Iggy Pop album slightly disappointment. I keep expecting them to be transformative but they fall just short of that. Don’t know why.
Sister Midnight and Nightclubbing are both incredible songs, then it slowly devolves into more hazy, hard to grasp stuff. Glad to know that China Girl by Bowie is a pseudo cover/redo
3.5 rounded down i think this one might be a bit too electronic for me …. beep boop! highlights: nightclubbing, china girl (sep 25 2024)
3.5
HONESTLY NEVER LIKED THIS ALBUM
Was okay. Sounded a bit like Bowie 5/10
Albumi #99, 04.11.2024 Iggy Popin soolodebyytti Stoogesin jälkimainingeissa, jossa kuuluu vahvasti David Bowien kädenjälki. Ei yllä seuraajansa Lust for Lifen tasolle, mutta kuuluu ehdottomasti levyhyllyn täytteeksi.
I do like the sound of the album and a few songs are very good. But I have to admit I would not go back to the album it is not something I really enjoyed overall.
Very influential record. I can definitely hear how many of my favorite bands were inspired by this album
Eh, just fine
Quite a departure from The Stooges, this basically sounds like avant garde Bowie on quaaludes: Slightly disaffected with an icy Euro feel.
3.5
Definitely not what I was expecting, given that my knowledge of Iggy Pop is mostly "Lust for Life" and "Candy" and "The Passenger." Very moody and synth-driven; Bowie's fingerprints are all over it and while Lou Reed wasn't directly involved, I hear his influence very loudly. It's good, but I'm not clear what makes it a top 1000 album. Maybe in a different mood or environment I'd feel differently. (Though in its defense, it feels like the last 3 times I said that, I also said those albums wore out their welcome. At a tight 39 minutes, The Idiot gets points for being concise.)
Very good
I’m not too keen on Iggy Pop, although this album did grow on me as I listened; however, not enough. I didn’t realise China Girl was written and released by both him and David Bowie. I prefer Bowie’s version although I did like the grittiness of Iggy’s version. Rating: 3
I thought a lot of this was cool and it had some good wonky sounds but I didn’t love listening to this all in one sitting. Might grow on me more later but I feel like I could only really enjoy a couple of these songs at a time.
Never really connected with this one but its cool that bowie produced it and i always will connect it to ian curtis’ death
A bit too down tempo for my taste in Iggy, but there are some solid songs on here. My favorite was Tiny Girls
I'll always know Iggy Pop first as Michelle Trachtenberg's dad on The Adventures of Pete and Pete. His music is fine.
Ganska average album
Clearly influenced by Jim Morrison here, but the music isn't nearly at the level of The Doors. OK album overall.
good background music but not something id actively listen to
Culturally I see this albums significance. This album has those pre Post-Punk vibes that would influence a lot of late 70s Post Punk/Early New Wave Bands First track “Sister Midnight” starts off good but then goes full David Bowie and is hit and miss with me. This album is more so the David Bowie show. Him being the Producer is definitely the driving force behind the sound and style of music being played. Feel It made Iggy take risks he may not of normally taken. The best section of music is “Baby”, “China Girl”,and “Dum Dum Boys” “Baby” has a little eerie thing going on but is a good groove based slower song. Not much to say I just like it “China Girl” is the most pop song on here and is a great change of pace. Definitely prefer this version to the later Bowie version in 80’s “Dum Dum Boys” has a fun spoken word Intro and is all about getting lost in the feel of it and its distorted guitar. This song is 7 min of repetition “Tiny Girls” is just a short Lou Reed rip off song hands down. If you didn’t tell me this was Iggy Pop I’d mistake it immediately. Short and sweet number either way. Last track “Mass Production” is the track I feel needs most multiple listens. It probably is something but it comes too close after “Dum Dum Boys” to appreciate its long 8 min Run time. On its own this track has most potential to be a real grower Overall this albums seems to have a lot of musical history attached to it and influence. However that doesn’t mean the songs are the best thing out there. “Lust For Life” the second David Bowie produced Iggy Pop solo album has better songs and fits this artist aesthetic more. It just isn’t as experimental as “The Idiot”. It’s very much Apples and Oranges 3/5 (could see me returning to it to fully GET IT) 1* - Not Good 2* - Has Merit 3* - Would listen Again (Good) 4* - Like It/Love it 5* - Love It & is A Classic album
I don't rate this anywhere near your loss for life, but it's still a good album.
As mich as I love iggy in his stooges days, I feel this lack his raw lower and energy. Also a big front man music without visuals are not as great. After seeing him live I understood that sometime the music and the performance make the whole thing better. This is one of my least favorite iggy albums caise its slowish and not as heavy. Kind of pop-punk instead of post-punk.
It is certainly obvious that David Bowie had a great impact on the sound and creation of this album. I didn't enjoy Nightclubbing (the most listened-to song on Spotify) as much as I enjoyed tracks like Sister Midnight, Funtime and China Girl. I love the Dum Dum Girls got their name from the track Dum Dum Boys, mostly because the song is a banger and has a nice guitar part. I don't think I would listen to this album again, though I do like the inspiration from David Bowie that is very clear. I don't know much of Iggy Pop's other solo music and I've heard this album is not indicative of his other output. Hard to say if the book should be in here if it is an outlier in his catalogue. I cannot say I did not enjoy this album though.
Bowie Lite
With a voice like Mick Jagger and a sound like talking heads meets INXS you would think every song is a banger but that’s not always the case. Although it absolutely comes together here and there, especially in China Girl and Tiny Girls. Overall enjoyable listen, but save some of the experimental weirdness for CBGB and by God add more of that sexy sax.
I went back and forth on this album. A lot of it sounds like a drunk guy rambling to himself. The instrumentals are these repetitive beats that are slow, but driving headbangers. There’s some cool production on it. The whole thing feels raw and strange and dark. I think I like the music but it’s hard to get over the vocals.
Feels like there's a lot to unpack with this one. It was good but not great. The Bowie factor is fascinating. You can clearly hear that his stamp, his vision, and from what I know of both of them, bodily fluids all over this album. In some ways it was disappointing as I was expecting the Iggy and Stooges Iggy. But this was quite different. It seems much less raw and angry than his former albums. There is a lot of industrial sound to the production as well as signature Bowie style sax. I had no idea Iggy did China Girl years before Bowie did it. It must have pointed the way to a post-punk world.
Enjoyable but nothing too special I feel.
Started out stronger than it ended. Liked all the weird bits and pieces. 3/5
More or less I like the music (Bowie) and Pop's vocals bring it down a bit, although some of the tracks drag too. A little disappointed in this one. 3/5
Can't say this album really grabbed me, which was a surprise since I like other songs by Iggy Pop
Bit underwhelming from a fairly big artist, didn't really have the same energy or passion you'd come to expect.
Familiar with some of his songs, but never listened to an album. Never realized he had a role in writing the song China Girl.
Cool to see Bowie and Iggy collaborate, but the album isn't for me. Standouts are China Girl and Dum Dum Boys.
I feel like I give so many albums a 3. I guess it's just my standard rating for "don't love it and won't listen to it again but it wasn't terrible"
It was fine, but I would always just choose to listen to a Bowie album over this.
I don't know why, but just from his (stage) name, his voice is always way better than I expect. And when combined with the very strong Bowie influence we have here, I can't help but like the album. On the buying side, if I came across it on a music stall as part of a multi-buy offer I would probably include it, but can't see myself actively seeking it out. Another very high 3
Ok but not my scene
Very 80s psychedelic sound. Some interesting songs but not my style overall. Didn’t dislike but wouldn’t jump to listen again.
Good album
3.5 Very good album. Not as good as "Lust for Life" though. Almost sounds like a Bowie album - he's all over it. China Girl, Dum Dum Boys highlights
- decent, this isn’t any old crap - still not really moving me tho
So much better than I thought it would be. Note to self, do not prejudge. I think he needs to keep his shirt on though. 😂
Not particularly memorable or engaging for me.
Not bad. Had no idea China Girl was his. Ok as a one-timer.
Another one of his albums that didn’t really do anything for me. Most interesting thing here was the collaboration with Bowie on Cbina Girl. Had no idea Iggy’s version existed. I just glad Bowie took that song back.
Jag var inte riktigt på humör för denna. Bowie lyfter.
This is OK- I've had a couple of Stooges records but this is the first Iggy Pop solo record I've had, and I much prefer the rawer, punkier, less polished stuff than this. It's fine though, but not really my thing.
Well, I was decidedly *not* looking forward to an album from Iggy Pop...but this was much better than expected. I mean, it's still not great and I'll never listen to it again, but I thought this would be a 2. Turned out it was decent. Interesting to read the Wiki blurb here noting that this was a collaborative effort with Bowie. 3.1
Very glam and bowie and fun.
It's the best Bowie album, but it is not a Bowie album. China Girl is a great song, no matter who is singing it. I prefer other albums by Iggy Pop. I link his image with the punk movement, so he does not match so well with this electronic /art-rock stuff. However, I must say that his work here, with good production, makes it stand out compared with Stooge's work, even the last being my favorite.
Every iggy pop album I've listened to on this thing I've prepped myself for music that I don't like. And yet each time I end up with the review "not bad, better than expected"
A lot lower energy than I was expecting from Iggy. It felt like a lot of talk singing as well. Just didn't reel me in.
I've always loved this Iggy album, though it is most definitely a Munich Bowie album. I'm not sure why it appeals to me so much... the lyrics are kinda... embarassing. But man, some of the hooks, the layers, etc... Still… great album and a significant step for Iggy post-Stooges. Honestly, he shouldn’t be alive. He should have been found in a back alley 50 years ago. I am convinced this album saved his life.
Going between a 3 and a 4, but ultimately a 3. I really thought he was British, gave me those vibes. It was short and I think that was good for me. I enjoyed it but it got a bit repetitive in each song, but then each stood pretty good on its own.
I didn’t know Iggy was the first to record China Girl. Cool version of it! I dug this album. It was cool and feels innovative for its time. He has a pretty unique sound.
to many, iggy is considered to be the godfather of punk, but you would never know that listening to this album, as it sounds nothing like his output with the stooges. iggy and david bowie were friends and you can definitely hear bowie’s influences on his sound with this album. and while his version of china girl is not as polished as bowie’s, it’s just as good. highlights: “nightclubbing” “china girl” “tiny girls”
I thought that I liked Iggy Pop until I heard some of his complete albums because of this challenge thing. Now I’m just meh on him. But this album wasn’t terrible.
This kicked off with a banger. Loved sister midnight. After that it just seemed a bit noisy with Iggy droning with unimpressive lyrics. HOWEVER, I respect the vibe for 1977!
Iggy always nails atmosphere. I bop my head because I’m on side the whole time and then I hear a lyric or two and I’m back in reality feeling less enthused about the album. Moments I really enjoyed (like nightclubbing) but I had that problem throughout.
was pleasantly surprised
bland but got ok at the end
This album is fine so far. 3/5
China Girl hitje wel gemiddeld albumpie
Relatively unremarkable. Not my kind of thing
Given how much I have fallen in love with The Stooges because of this list, I really expected more from this. Don't get me wrong, it's perfectly listenable, but it just feel really inconsistent and some moments drag on much longer than they really should. I still like to see Iggy evolving his sounds though, the ideas are definitely there, but the execution could have been done a bit better.
Nightclubbing! Who knew
Spooky, groovy post-punk. The hand of Bowie evident on every track but overall the vibe is more gothic than on his own records.
satisfactory
Yeah, this is really Bowie-adjacent. It's hard to tell where one starts and the other ends. Not quite as catchy, though.
3.5
An oddly strange but fascinating album. Iggy Pop’s vocal style is an acquired taste but there’s so much dark bluesy pop on this album with excellent arrangements and production. Can’t say I’m jonsing to listen again soon but enjoyed my time with it.
3.5
I like the Stooges better, but this isn't bad. 3.5/5
I thought this would be more my style. The Bowie influence is clear but it's still figuring out where to go. Not a bad album and some really cool instrumental work but this feels in progress vs complete.
Duger till vardags.
3/5
Not too bad musically. Vocals are not the best, but the songs were not too bad.
I enjoyed this album, but there’s nothing standout here. It’s well produced, the vocals are distinctive if not exactly the greatest and the subject matter covers all elements of debauchary. But I wouldn’t find myself going back to it at any point.
A hell of a step away from punk, as lame as that sounds.
Nightclubbing is a brilliant song 3/5
Поп и Боуи - как Вупсень и Пупсень
Eh
I can't say that I'm really crazy about Iggy's solo career, including his two classics Lust for Life and The Idiot. And out of those two, I prefer Lust for Life. I get the appeal though, its dark proto-New Wave songs with Bowie's metallic production gives it a particular atmosphere, but most of the songs just fall flat for me. Good, but not great.
I never got Iggy's works, but maybe someday I will.
Not a fan of Bowie and this seems like the Walmart brand Bowie. His fingerprints are all over this. I did relisten to this and gave it a higher rating though. 2.63
2.5
Interesante pero al final tiene algunos skips. No me encantó. 5/10.
Infamous
I like Igggy overall, and did not know many of the songs on this album. I liked it, though not enough to seek it out for a listen in the coming months.
Meeeeh
good fun
It was OK, you can hear a lot of Bowie in this
I want to like it, but I don’t. It wants to be David Bowie sometimes.
So this has the usual SoloProject stench on it for sure...with a twist. My overreaching opinion is that 99% of solo albums suck. This record is salvaged by the fact that it is more of a Iggy/Bowie collaboration. Ot plays as if David Bowie wrote an album of Stooges material and invited Iggy to be on lead vocals.
Iggy iggy
This was ok overall.
Solide, gut produzierte Schallplatte. Der Beginn einer großen Kariere.
fun
Gritty at times but then surprises you with a horn section. The first1+ minutes of the last track, I forgot I was streaming and literally thought it was my neighbors doing yard work outside. Highlight was definitely China Girl, which I'd assumed was a Bowie original. Love Iggy Pop's creativity; don't love the all-over-the-place sound with the only consistency his monotonous vocals.
I was expecting some punk music and was surprised by something feeling like a baby between Jim Morrison and David Bowie. I was taken off guard and delighted by what it was. I feel like the Stooges were more punk, but this did not have that feel. Super Good though! 3.5
OK but anticipated better fo some reason.
Iggy. What else can you say? It's fun to know that the first version of China Girl appears here.
Like Bowie without the Bowie
I didn't think I'd like this but it is kind of a grimy version of David Bowie with some more punk swagger (which makes sense since this is Iggy of Stooges fame). Night Clubbing and Baby are very drunk/weird guitar experiments. China Girl and Dum Dum Boys are just generally good rock songs.
Never really listened to him before. Sort of like Bowie
Starts great, but ends up in noise
Sleazy as hell but good grooves as well as good production from Mr David Bowie. Fav Songs - Nightclubbing - China Girl - Dum Dum Boys
Never heard an Iggy Pop before, not what I expected, but not too bad.
Good album musically. Obvious Bowie influence which drowned out the Iggy Pop sound that I prefer if I'm listening to Iggy. Bowie good, Iggy good, but together it's in a middle ground that isn't as good as either of their individual work.
Pretty solid. Doesn't quite grab me.
Reminds me of the 00s NY indie scene, "meet me in the bathroom" era
I'm not sure I got it, some of the songs where iggy is a bit more shouty and it has a bit of bite are okay, but the rest kinda passed me by and was quickly forgotten. I don't think it's for me and I wonder if it's only on this list because of the pedigree of both the artist involved.
Had never really listened to Iggy Pop before. He's like buying David Bowie on Wish. Not bad...just not Bowie
3
I must have listened to this before because Nightclubbing is vaguely familiar and Dum Dum Boys is a “liked” song on Spotify. On this new listen, DDB remains the lone liked song.
Nicht schlecht. Anders als gedacht.
I'm not sure how to fully put this album into words. It's party music I'd never want to party to. It's spooky music that wouldn't make the cut on my Halloween playlist. It's alternative rock that doesn't rock. The vocals remind me of Muse. Lots of long droning notes. A lot of these songs aren't quite skippable but outside of the last song Mass Production, none of them have any qualities that really stand out of me. Mass Production has the right level of weird that I wish Iggy Pop had leaned into for the whole album.
A voir plus comme un album de compo de David Bowie plus que juste Iggy. J'aurais voulu aimer plus. Good sound et lyrics ok en général. Moins nice que Lust for life.
5/10
Ok . Apparently bowie did most of it. Not enough lust for lifet
What an interesting, clunky, industrial sound. It sounds a lot like David Bowie’s “Low,” which makes sense because they were made around the same time and Bowie produced this album. Some of it worked for me, some of it didn’t. The production on some of these songs is pretty murky. It has to be intentional (especially since other songs have a much cleaner sound) but it’s an interesting choice. I wonder what sort of drugs were happening in the studio when they recorded and mixed this. “Mass Production” is starting to sell me on the sound of this album. Those awful, queasy synths (?) that come in around 4:30? I kinda dig it 😂
A pretty decent David Bowie album. China Girl sounds weird on this one, though. XD
This is my first listen to this album. My first impression of the album is that it seems heavily influenced by David Bowie and is a departure for Iggy Pop from his previous work with the Stooges. The album feels like it was put together rather quickly and some of it is a bit flawed. The vocals don't seem to exude much energy. Lyrically it is pretty dark. The Synth is a bit over used as well. There is no doubt that this is a transitional album for Pop that would lead to better work, but I don't see this as a particularly good album. Favorite songs, Funtime, China Girl, Night Clubbing. 3 out of 5.
An interesting collaboration record between Iggy Pop and David Bowie. This ain't the Iggy Pop of Stooges fame. Here, he is in control of his voice and the energy is much more tame. It has that "Cold War" feel of the Berlin Trilogy, just a little less engaging, but somehow somehow funnier? The lyrics and themes feel a bit like satire/dark comedy. I prefer Lust for Life from this era. Fav track: Sister Midnight
What a fascinating record! I can't believe I haven't listened to this before. The late 70s Bowie instrumentals are not what I expected from an Iggy Pop record. It's like I've just uncovered the lost companion album to Low. That said, Pop's vocals suffer from the comparison. I enjoyed it but couldn't help but feel like I'd rather hear David sing these songs. I suppose we get the chance later with Bowie's version of China Girl to follow sometime later. Is this interesting? Yes. Is it transcendent? Not as much. Fave tracks: Sister Midnight, Mass Production
Felt like this dude was a little disturbed but I mostly enjoyed the music. I see the similarities with Bowie but it’s worse than Bowie in most categories.
I don't dislike Iggy Pop but we are reaching PJ Harvey levels of disproportionate representation on this list with him too. \"Dum Dum Boys\" did rock, and I enjoyed the Hendrix-inspired guitar parts on that song.
Kinda weird for my taste
I've never liked Iggy's voice, but I like the music here.
This was certainly an album, nightclubbing was cool I guess.
3.5
Can't knock it but can't say I loved it.
I'm not crazy about it, but Bowie is cool.
Prefer the passenger
it's ok. Definitely not Iggy's best work. Weird how Bowie took inspiration from Iggy, but then this album is very obviously inspired by Bowie.
I like Iggy Pop, but I was in a weird mood yesterday, and this was a little dark for me.
I realize that I’m not cool if I don’t like this, but that isn’t enough for me to lie to myself and say that I connect with this. It’s just not that exciting.
Makes me want to do cocaine
Another scary one! david bowie's all over this - 3
Apparently if you were in the music industry in the 70s and liked heroin, you had to do an album with David Bowie. This is a David Bowie album. The production, the music, even the lyrics scream Bowie. It's good but it lacks the menace of Iggys later work or the noise and violence of the stooges.
Sounds exactly like an Iggy Pop lyrical response to David Bowie's songwriting while both were holding up in a castle in France in an attempt at sobriety. Dark and a bit more coordinated than the Stooges, it helps to show a different side of Iggy, though the music remains distinctly Bowie-like
I can’t believe a dog sung this Also David Bowie moment
This is the first of two albums made by Iggy during his time in Berlin with David Bowie, whilst getting sober (both of which were made in 1977). This one is actually the debut solo album for Iggy as well. It is a hard departure from his proto punk roots with The Stooges. Bowie wrote and performed all of the music for this album, and it really comes through. My first thought upon hearing this record was that it sounded like a Bowie record with a scratchy, gruff vocalist. Favourite songs: Nightclubbing, China Girl Least favourite songs: Mass Production, Baby 3/5
You would never guess that Bowie produced this first solo album for Iggy lol. Although David and Iggy Co wrote China Girl, its amazing the difference in Iggys version, where he murdered it, and 6 years later David releases it and its a hit. For me this album was an expression of Bowie at a low in his life, and Iggys first solo attempt fell short of the goal line with strained vocals... only to find his solo spirit in his next album Lust For Life. I could listen to this if it was on, but wouldn't choose to listen to it. I'm torn for review rating, and only giving it 3 stats for the Bowie influence.
Slow start but surprisingly has some bangers
Solid album from the king of punk.
An album that had some songs with potential, but only one good song I would listen to again. 2.5/5
Whenever I listen to this I’m impressed at how two such talented musicians can make me feel this little. It’s fine and parts are even really good, but I don’t really care for it. It’s as if nothing is truly on the line until the closing track. Okay, this may sound more negative than it actually is. But… It’s Iggy and Bowie for crying out loud!
China Girl is probably his best song
Weird, icy, dour, atmospheric. Definitely reminds me of Bowie's Station to Station, though not as high-quality. A very dense and interesting album although not one I'd want to listen to much. Best song: China Girl
First time I really heard the original version of China Girl. Iggy is another one that I understand the greatness but I don't necessarily want to listen to it.
This is the first artist to have two of their albums come up out of the 1001 possible albums. This is the most Iggy Pop I’ve ever listened to and I’m struggling to understand his status in music culture. This guy is an icon and a punk hero. He’s vital to an entire genre of music and it’s prominence in our society. And I gotta say I’m pretty underwhelmed by these songs. They’re fine. They’re not bad in any way. But I expected them to be undeniable. Forces of nature that laid waste to my ears and brain. Maybe it’s a build up to his best stuff and I’ll listen to that later. Then again, if this is his good stuff why is he on this list at all?
You can tell the David Bowie sound just from the drums. I'll give it points for the music being done by him. Bowie was experimenting with the sounds he would later use for Low. Low I like the best of all three of the Berlin Trilogy. The Idiot has a similar set up to it: poppier songs on one side, experimentation on the other. The experimental songs feel like Bowie's working things out, and Iggy is just singing on top of it. Iggy's voice... ok, I am just going to come out and say it: I _NEVER_ liked Iggy Pop's voice. It's.... centerless. It feels like his vocals are all over the place when they should just be on one simple line, like a gnat you're trying to swat. He comes at your hand and then flies away at the last second. The only two songs of his I ever liked had to do with the music BEHIND him and not his singing in particular. "Mass Production" is a good example. I could tell this was a good idea for one of Bowie's "tone poems" he did on Low and Heroes. But Pop's singing over it just ruined it for me. "China Girl"... I knew it was originally an Iggy Pop song, but Bowie made it such a hit back in the 80s, hearing the original sounded weird. The plinking piano almost sounded like a toy piano. So the only reason I am giving it close to a 3 is because of Bowie's hand in it. He made it as least listenable.
Yep, this has Bowie's fingerprints all over it. It's interesting and has some cool electronic rock sounds that Bowie was mastering at the time. And it's also cool to see Iggy crank out some lyrics to fit Bowie's arrangements. But Iggy isn't the same vocalist as Bowie so this one doesn't work as well for me. This very well might be one of those albums that really clicks after 5 or more listens, but I'll just wait to listen to Iggy's follow-up. Not bad, but nothing more.
I preferred Lust for Life, but this isn’t bad. You can definitely hear the Bowie influence.
It’s okay, lots of Bowie influence but not much here to set it apart from more memorable music from this time. 5/10
I found most of the album quite unaspiring and lacked the excitement of the stooges however the last track was surprisingly good.
Highlights: "Mass Production," "Baby," "Nightclubbing," "Funtime" The blown out, filtered timbres from the guitars to the echoes have aged perfectly. Aspects of this mid-career Bowie style have continued to turn heads for decades, and something about hearing it through Iggy Pop gave it a darker turn; you can clearly hear the seeds of goth, no wave, and the '00s hard rock orbiting Reznor and Homme here. Most of the album drags, but the peaks are still shocking and chilling.
he scares me
This is my fourth Iggy Pop Album. I think this slots in at 3rd place. While I am enjoying his music, sure would be nice if the randomizer would give me artists other than Iggy Pop. 3.5/5
Not only in China Girl (of which the original writer's version is much superior) do we hear that David Bowie had his hands in the making and writing of this album. It's artsy, but the songs just aren't there. It's a nice enough listen, but that's about it. 2.5/5
Quirky rock sound - Bowie influence is clear. Not as refined as second album but ideas are there. Opening track Sister Midnight is probably best one.
3/5
pretty cool!
boring, not the passenger. china girl is off. mass production is cheeks. i was not hypnotized. the 3 is for quality like anita baker. funtime
Fairly enjoyable, basically a David Bowie album so fitting that it's good but not great for me. FS: Sister Midnight, China Girl
It was alright. Last track was a little…much.
Interesting direction for Iggy. Can't say I enjoyed the whole thing but I can appreciate what he was trying to go for here.
It's okay to separate the art from the artist.
3. There's some cool here, and a good amount of innovation. It's lacking the timelessness I was expecting given the infamy of Iggy Pop
Funny how much this Iggy sounds like Bowie...but that isn't a bad thing. 3/5
Really good, massive Bowie influences 3.5
It got off to a nice start. I liked the electronic-inspired opener. Otherwise it was a fairly okay listen, although I may need to give it another go. 3/5
Good stuff with Bowie cowriting most
This was an interesting listen. I was surprised to discover that China Girl was a collaboration with David Bowie first performed by Iggy Pop. Didn’t love the album but glad to have listened to it.
Its more of a Bowie/IG joint album as he DB had a LOT of creative control on this one. Ddrug fuelled, influential and dark but not lovable. (For me at least)
It's kind of B-tier Low by Bowie for me, I much prefer Lust for Life (the follow up album). Nightclubbing is the standout track for sure, but the rest just made me wish I was listening to Bowie instead.
Good
