Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Really thought I would love this because I remembered a few songs from the 80’s that I liked. Unfortunately they weren’t on here and nothing really stood out.
Lustiga texter, bra musik
very british stuff
My experience with english post-punk and new wave with this list has beeing miserable, to say the least. But this record is so exaggerated in every aspect, that it differs a lot from other albums of the same genre. It truly feels unique even if it shares similiaritys with works under the genre umbrella. Still, I don't love it and I'm not planning returning to it.
An album filled with fun 3 minute pop but lacking a couple of killers
Pretty good for kind of weird 80s stuff. The drums are great.
Very 80s, very conceptual. Less melodic than I like. Pop Music was a (known) highlight
J - 3/5 Best Track - "Kings Of The Wild Frontier" F - DNL
It's all over the place. And a pirate song? 😂 I was confused on my first listen, but there are some catchy songs.
While I recognize that Adam (and the) Ant(s) were a very groundbreaking, creative, and experimental act in the world of weirdo dance-punk, their fundamental flaw is being annoying as fuck. That said, I did enjoy this LP a bit more than expected.
Content vs form. Though - "content" has taken on a different tone in our era of tiktokkery. Maybe form was wrongly (by me at least) looked down on. Anyway the form's pretty cool, lot of antmusic call outs, first peoples call outs, and it's not like his yelping and the guitar players music are not pretty innovative and influential. Just when you think it's over/with XTC on top...
On influence alone, the songs aren't his best though, his sound matured after this one
Dog Eat Dog.
Only ever heard the (excellent) Adam Ant singles, not the full albums. More post-punk and abrasive than I'd anticipated (Ants Invasion seems to rip off Black Sabbath?!), doesn't always work but at the time I'd have loved this for it's charisma and zest - definitely got a vibe of it's own
it's cultural appropriation, sure, but i cannot pin point any one culture that Adam and his Ants draw from out of the grabbag of supposed cultural sounds. (American Indians? Mexicans? the people of Burundi? pirates?) what matters is that he takes this glut of pop/other people's cultures and makes it into a fairly compelling if messy painting. i do feel a bit bored by the tracks that aren't filled with loud thundering drums, but it would get a bit frustrating if that's ALL the drumming that was on the album. it's perfectly fine, even if i don't buy into Adam's whole thing -- whatever that thing is.
this is pretty campy and fun but some of the songs go on too long and some of them just suck
Blind album amd artist. This album immediately caught my attention and then just dragged so hard at the end. Strong start for me, and a slow finish. TIL NIN covered Physical from a B Side of the album for Broken EP. NIN did it better.
New wave/post punk I have always been a fan of. I think there's a feeling of nostalgia in its particular sound, gives it a bit of timelessness.
I liked this more than I thought I would. Has a few catchy tracks. Better than your run of the mill 3 but not quite a 4. 3.5/5
I remember liking this more then than I do now. Consistent feel and spirit throughout, but pretty repetitive sounding. Antmusic is a clear standout no doubt why it was a chosen single. Jolly Roger was a funny surprise that helped break it all up. Regardless, you gotta give it to Adam and fellow ants first creating a sound that is truly unique.
Could not really get into this, but wasn’t annoyed with it enough to go low
This grew on me and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Some catchy tunes. 3.25
I was flip flopping between a 2* and 3* but then the pirate song came on and I knew it was a 3*. Ha! 3/5
A liiiiittle disappointing. Thought this could have been a 5. It's a 3
It was alright. Some catchy tunes. Don't think I'll relisten.
Sure. Why not Favorite Song: Physical (You're So) Rating: 6/10
I did like the random sea shanty
I liked the first two songs, the rest started to bore me after a while.
The first album I ever owned. I've always had exquisite taste. Wild Frontier is a BEEFY album. With hindsight, the non-single tracks are a little weak in composition. But the drums fill the gaps nicely. The panto element is strong. It's always good when an artist doesn't take themselves too seriously.
Some really good bits in this and also some dross. Some of the guitar parts and drums are good, however the dated vocals and repetitive songs aren’t great.
Better than expected. Los Rancheros and Killer in the Home were highlights for me. Fun!
Very stupid album thematically and lyrically but quite enjoyable, I really like the whole persona of the band with the outfits and tribal inspiration. Musically I thought it was cool with the double drum and the vocals were exactly what it needed. Highlights for me was ants invasion and the magnificent five. The rest of the songs were quite mid but not exactly bad. The Jolly Roger song was very random as well. Overall 5.5/10.
I saw a review describe this album as 'penis music' and its oddly descriptive of the feeling of listening to this album. I had a weirdly good time with it, even though I wouldn't necessarily call it good
"post punk", still kind of raw vocals and guitars with semi frantic drums, but less harsh
This was quite a fun listen, but I doubt I'll ever listen to it again (or any individual songs from it). I like the energy and the silliness, but the vocal style is a bit much (like shouty singing with shouty backing vocals over shouty hammahey stuff)
The album cover had me worried, but it actually wasn't too bad. 3.5 stars.
It's pop, but weird and bonkers. While being pop. Which is cool. But I don't have time for this.
It's definitely different. It started strong for me but it's losing its magic over the course of the album. I'll listen again.
This always sounds less new wave to me and more rockabilly than anything else. While I appreciate the ground work they set for future musicians in the new wave and industrial space (for the use of samples, particularly from movies), I personally don't enjoy the albums of Adam and the Ants. I prefer Adam Ant's first solo album FRIEND OR FOE.
They are ok. Have to be in the mood.
Pretty fun. Not a world-beating album or anything, but quirky and eclectic. Ant Music will always be a bit of a silly banger.
oh interesting
It was fine, not really to my tastes.
It was fine. I don't really know if I get the vibe. But that's just what the 80s were like.
Interesting and unusual album, it was fun to listen to, reminded me of new wave albums from my country. Generally, the album is a mix of punk and new wave, it also contains some Shadows-like instrumentals, which sound quite nice. What pleasantly surprised me about the album is the fact that there are some guitar riffs on here which are borderline hard rock/metal, which for me, being a fan of these genres, was great to hear and they also fit in quite well with the music. Honestly, the album isn't anything too special, but it's a fun listen and isn't boring at any point.
I actually thought this one started off pretty good and was better than what I was expecting, but it definitely became less enjoyable as I listened. I don't know, I feel like just settling for a low 3 here.
I wasn't completely on board out of the gate, but as this plays on I'm finding myself enjoying this more and more. Ants Invasion plays as if Black Sabbath had punk impulses and an (even more so) eccentric frontman. Moody and enjoyable. Making History sounds a lot like I Want Candy. Kind of funny given the history to Bow Wow Wow who are prominently known for that song. Jolly Roger is a very silly one indeed...could have done without that. Not sure what to say here. After two listens I'm not left with strong impressions. I enjoyed some of the punkier sounding tracks (Feed Me to the Lions, Ants Invasion, The Magnificent Five), but a lot of other tracks were misses for me. This rounds out to a soft 3.
What fresh hell is this album??? I can't decide if I like it or not, maybe leaning towards the not. It's too chaotic to really make out what's going on with any of these songs. Antmusic is easily the most digestible song on the album, and Dog Eat Dog is pretty good, the rest is pretty bananas..
A fun yet sort of strange album. It was okay.
Not bad UK punk music but I have had so much in this list that I am no longer impressed. Stand-out: Press Darling
Really glad to have had a chance to listen to this one. Been curious a long time. It’s just alright for me. More noisy and chaotic than expected. It’s fine, but not at all essential.
New 80s music. Like it but don't love it
80er independent Rock. Ok zu hören, auf Dauer anstrengend. 3/5
A bit whacky but otherwise not much to say on this one for me. Punky and silly and crazy but not super exciting or interesting esp considering It’s so new. It kinda sounds like a record form the 70s.
At times it was truly annoying, but a couple I actually found enjoyable. Rounding up to a 3
Gave it 3 listens. Glad I did. Listen 1 and 2 - instant hate. However, listen 3...Drums, guitar riffs, and bass lines are all solid and pure rock and roll - listen to Magnificent Five, for example. Liked some of the Easter Eggs too - for example "Rumble" riff throughout Killer In The Home, or Enrico Morricone Westerns with Jolly Roger.
Boppable.
The album cover had me worried, but it actually wasn't too bad. 3.5 stars.
It might be due to very low expectations given the terrible album cover, but I didn't find this too bad. Some enjoyment to be had. I'm glad british people aren't real though.
More wild and interesting than I had expected. The first half of the album combined good hooks with creative ideas. Dropped off a bit on the second half and not sure what that pirate stuff was...
This is very 1980, in that a little goes a long way.
Funny that his real name is Stuart Leslie Goddard
I mostly enjoyed this
Not bad, kinda fun.
Diverse mixing
I'd only heard Stand and Deliver and Prince Charming before. Probably enjoyed this more than I thought - there's some cool fuzzy guitars and catchy hooks in places. Certainly Adam and the Ants had a unique sound, image and attitude that still seems quite fresh and unique 4 decades on I don't love all the tracks, especially in the second half it's not as strong, but decent overall
Not sure
I've heard some Adam Ant songs before but never a full album. For some reason I've always thought he's goofy and kinda avoided him. But the album is quite alright, cannot say no to 80s music. 3/5
This album feels like it falls just short of "good" in every regard. It's missing that last bit of enthusiasm and instrumental significance. It's almost exciting. Almost interesting. Almost memorable. But at the end of the day I can rest easy know I will probably never hear this album again and that's okay.
brit nuwave/punk, weird lyrics that I couldn't understand most of the time, a song about pirates, and most tracks all sounded the same..... and yet I found myself entertained by it all.
This is a really interesting album to get immediately after Talking Heads' Fear of Music, especially since I couldn't stand that album. This album feels a lot like that Talking Heads album, with the repetitive rhythm based music, some songs lacking in catchiness, really cheesy instrumentation here and there. All things considered, I should hate this album same as Fear of Music, but I don't. I think it's just due to how sincere and *fun* Adam sounds like he's having on this album whereas the Talking Heads' album didn't sound fun at all and felt way too up its own ass, I guess? Like they're doing all that weird experimental stuff because it's "true art", whereas Adam and the Ants are just fucking around and having fun. It may not work all the time for me, but at least it's fun.
I can admire the commitment to the ant theme--it's unusual but somehow endearing, like Black Sabbath reusing their band name for a song and album title. That feature lends itself to a quirky, punk vibe, even if the genre is more new wave than punk. The lyrics weren't anything out of the ordinary, but the beats were good. Made for an album I enjoyed well enough.
This album was an absolute hot mess. I like, kind of, almost liked it. Not sure if I am being held prisoner and this is Stockholm Syndrome. Please help. But seriously. It is weird, it is kooky, and it tries a lot of different stuff. It is new wave music at its strangest, and I think, in a way, this is where new wave shines the best. I did find this album to be pretty intriguing. I don't think it needs to be on this project at all, but yeah. Probably a high 2, so rounding up to a 3. Let the Stockholm Syndrome reign.
Great singles, but crap album. The single were innovative, energetic catchy and exciting. The rest, huh!
This one is nuts, some real driving drums through out. Propa Bri'ish glam rock. It just all sounds the same
There's some good stuff here, interspersed with a fair bit of filler material. Ant Music is great, and I liked Killer In The Home with its Link Wray sample. The whole thing is pretty camp, but for the most part that's fun. A low three.
Fizzing with pop energy, burundi drums, and wild nobility - catchy, twanging, and joyful
It not bad, kind of pre/proto-punk. I liked the simplicity of some of the bass lines. Overall it’s not something I’ll go back to, but it was okay.
Adam and the Ants I think is a context kind of album. It felt like the British response to Oingo Biongo which was started in 1978 both of which were on the tail end of the postpunk movement and pioneered the Alt—Rock genre. If you grew up on this I think it could your genius (the way I did on Biongo). There are some good tracks on here like Ant Invasion and the reggae-inspired Making History. However, a lot of this album felt like other stuff that I had heard. I didn’t dislike it, matter of fact I enjoy listening to it. But I’m not sure if I look for it.
Interesting time capsule. The drumbeat is so unique and tom heavy. That drum sound almost defines the whole sound. I liked Lions Den with the nod to Star Wars in there. How much did they have to pay John Williams for that 20 seconds? Don’t Be Square is also catchy and fun (se cmusic for antpeople!). Fun listen!
3.5 stars. Campy but fun new wave. Double drums does a lot for this. All the chanting makes it feel anthemic at times but obnoxious at times ("Don't Be Square (Be There)"). Standout is "Kings of the Wild Frontier". "Los Rancheros" also decent.
Thoughts before listening: I know very little about Adam Ant except for some hits like "Goody Two Shoes". He's new wave but doesn't seem to get the hype of the huge hitmakers or the more punk rock "cool" new wave groups. Review: This is okay. Apparently this was considered groundbreaking for introducing the "Burundi beat" to new wave. I definitely hear the driving beat in these songs, but it just sounds like 80s new wave music to me. Its not bad, but nothing here is really grabbing my attention. There are definitely better, more iconic songs that use this sound...maybe Adam Ant was a huge influence on those bands? 3-stars
Fav song: Los Rancheros Not too bad for an album full of vocal stimming! Very strange across the board but pretty fun overall. I liked the songs that sounded like other bands that I like so can’t say much on how I feel about the writing.
Very weird, didn't really know what to give it so I'm going for a cop out 3*
Worth it for the singles. A solid 3.
Bit of a mixed bag but some big bangers
Brought back great childhood memories. This was an act you could like as a child with all the costumes and larking about. I was surprised, then, to discover some of the tracks have a great post-punk guitar sound that wouldn't be out of place on some modern indie rock tracks. There's too much filler on the album though. Antmusic is the stand out (and deliver) track here. I would give this 3.5 if I could. I would give it a four to mark it out from the average albums because I enjoy the sound and look and nostalgia of it all, but I can't say I'm going to play it again apart from for a jolly jape.
Good
Some songs great. Some songs not so great
3 - Yeah it was okay, not sure about the context of this album but nothing blew me away
really wanted to like this more than i did. at some points it clicked but nothing fully locked in
the sound of childhood nostalgia . plenty of fantastically good singles here, but the sound doesn’t sustain a whole album . 3
Decent album, starts off pretty strong, but falls off at the end.
It was decent enough but didn't blow my socks off. It all got a bit samey by the end, especially as I forgot to turn it off before all the bonus tracks. Was interesting to hear the original version of "Physical (You're So)"...it's quite terrible!
A couple good tracks
Interesting, but not my thing
73% Best: Los Rancheros; Ants Invasion; Don't Be Square (Be There); The Human Beings Must-Hear? Nope
Old but not too bad...hasn't aged that well tbh
Another band that I had not listened to before. I kind of liked some of these, but really didn’t love or hate any of them. Probably a weak 3 for me.
fun sound, some songs i really liked
Pretty interesting. I almost really liked this, but something just didn't quite click for me. Would be interested to listen to other albums, as I really don't know much about this group, and have only heard their songs covered by others.
Reminds me of 80's era Bowie with some annoying country elements mixed into some tracks. The drums and bass feel like they create an engaging and driving rhythm. The lyrics are moody with some war-era Bono elements to it, especially in Killer in the home.
Some good songs in there, not a bad listen.
This sounded very 80s. Not really good or bad.
Gute Basis und New Wave, vermisse aber ein Highlight.
Det är lite väl skränigt och gapigt. Några stora hits dock.
Answers the question of, “what would the Clash sound like if they were more camp?“
Not bad. Kind of a fun energy to it. There seemed to be no low end to the music, though. Strange mixing issue, maybe?
Dog Eat Dog 3.3 Antmusic 3.2 Feed Me to the Lions 3.4 Los Rancheros 3 Ants Invasion 3.1 Killer in the Home 2.9 Kings of the Wild Frontier 3.2 The Magnificent Five 3.1 Don't Be Square (Be There) 3.1 Jolly Roger 2.9 Making History 2.7 The Human Beings 2.6 Score: 3.038461538
Ersti Gedanke: Adam who? Aber me gusta. Falls es euch na gid Adam and the ants: Grüsse gehen raus
Quite strange album I have to say, very similar to Talking Heads in many ways. The singer sounds very much like David Byrne, but the songwriting and weirdness is quite similar to them as well. Apparently quite successful when it came out. I'm having quite a hard time figuring out where it ends up on a map with weird on one axis, and good on the other. After some consideration I think it ends up somewhere in the middle. It's quite interesting and decent at times, but not something that really pulls me in either. Didn't find any particular song that I really liked, for example. I think a weak 3 will have to do.
Very new wave! I found it was quite good. Some good hits and some very strange (and fun) songs. It didn't hold my attention the whole way through but e.g "Antmusic" is a bop! "Jolly roger" was a real fun song too but I think I'm weak to anything pirate themed. It feels that this could grow on you with multiple listens but for now a smack bang in the middle 3.
Supreme dadness
It's fun, a little silly, a good time
I think it says a lot about my last 15ish albums to say that this was a breath of fresh air! I almost gave it 5 stars by sheer relief it wasn't going to make me sleepy
I don’t particularly like this, but I appreciate the weird 80sness of it.
I'd listened to this once before, and gave it at least 3 listens this time around, and I just don't fully dig it. It's music that I feel I should like as I enjoy a lot of New Wave music from this time period, this just doesn't click with me for reasons I'm unsure of. I think I'd describe it as Talking Heads Lite or something: there are just better similar-sounding options. It's not a bad record though. Adam Ant sounds like a good front man, and the music is interesting enough. Just doesn't wow me.
Pretty good.
Creative but grating, trying a bit too hard 3
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It's weird but occasionally quite catchy. Kings of the wild frontier is a great song. A bit uneven though.
It was fine
My feeling on this is that it was one of the classic early MTV bands i.e. the visual impact was as important as the music, and when the two worked well together, like with Adam & The Ants, you probably ended up with a hit. I personally liked "Stand and Deliver" more than any of the tracks on this album. It's hard to argue that this is anything other than average, though, in terms of the quality of the music and the place of the band in musical history.
I've heard of this group. Never really heard anything they released. Not bad. Not my style of music.
Fav: Ants Invasion Least Fav: Killer In The Home By far the weirdest album I’ve listened to yet, and somehow I was able to enjoy it, o don’t think it was a masterpiece but I respected the album for just doing it’s own thing with the yodelling, the pirate song and “ant music for sex people, sex music for ant people”
Weird in a fun way but super forgettable for some reason. I'm writing this the morning after I listened to it and I can only remember my feelings. None of the songs.
Expected this to be peak 80s sound but I actually think it’s aged very well and wasn’t as camp as I was expecting. Yeah, I dig the Ants!
Very silly, pretty great.
Pretty good. Not mind blowing.
That was off the wall
Sort of so bad its good, I mean it's not actual good, but in a goofy way where you lose all musical criteria there's something compelling here. I can't bring myself to say its actually good, but an interesting listen. How do you rate such a thing? To me a fun 2 that is elevated to a 3 by being weird and crazy in a good way. Can't bring myself to give this a 4 though. Ant music for sex people, sex music for ant people,
This was an enjoyable album. I never felt like I was waiting for it to be over. 3.5
Nobody needs this much AATA
2/5. Got an extra star from Will
Jeez this guy likes ants like so much
- Tracks that sound like Mighty Boosh songs - Tracks that sound like TGS With Tracey Jordan skits - Electric Funeral rip-off - I Want Candy rip-off - Pirate anthem Mix it all together and you've got a classic
You can really hear the punk / new wave sensibilities in the songs. My feeling was that they were throwing a lot of things to the wall to see what would stick. I find it interesting that it wasn't until Adam Ant went solo that he was really recognized by the non-punk population. I also didn't know the original line-up left Adam to from Bow Wow Wow. It's just that the songs themselves don't break out to be... catchier. They all seemed pretty forgettable. Top tracks: "Dog Eat Dog," "Killer In The Home"
Well, it was fun.
The usual early-80s-post-punk attitude and sound - this album is well produced, however - but tedious, as in the absence of any good songs, I'm missing a reason to listen to this again. 2.5/5
Interesting album. This is punk, new wave and has a nice poppy feel. It’s a little goofy, but I enjoyed the listen. ***
Adam & the Ants aren't new to me, but I've also never really listened to them before. I don't think I'll be listening to them again either. I feel like I've been taken on a peculiar ride and have developed whiplash. Three stars for being interesting?
couple good tunes, but doesnt leave too much impression
3. Another new wave, um, experience. Like pirate rock. I think three stars is right, but I'm glad I heard em.
A surprisingly fun and good new wave album with lots of influences from other bands and styles. However there are no songs that stand out, but the overall listening experience was good. 3.5 out of 5.
Like the vocal energy Very persistent with the drums. Loads of toms Like the magnificent 5 intro with the whistle Jolly Roger 😂
From what little I knew of Adam & The Ants before now (admittedly mainly the song Prince Charming, which isn’t on here) I’d have said it’s right that they’re represented in the 1001 albums. Their brand of wild, theatrical-but-accessible, not-quite-punk-not-quite glam seems pretty unique. And from what I’ve gleaned from TV clips shows etc, it made some sort of cultural impact at the time. As for this album? Yeah, pretty good. All the above, really, but also I think I'm safe in saying that it references ants more times than any of the other 1000, so that’s another USP.
Great 80s Joy!
Enjoyed more than I thought I would. Familiar with goodie two shoes, but not this Felt like the Sex Pistols if they really learned to play, knocked off the rough edges, and had a great producer. (Though that pretty much would make the Sex Pistols uninteresting) Liked this one more than I thought I would. Had the two disc remaster, so it seemed like it went on too long, but they may have been the deluxe version.
I had fond memories of Adam & The Ants. Apparently my taste has changed a bit since my youth. I thought the album was quite funny in parts. But it didn't really impress me. I won't be listening to it again so soon. 3/5
Crazy new wave
I remember being a fan of Adam & The Ants as a kid, but that was just based on singles like Prince Charming and Stand and Deliver. Kings of the Wild Frontier has that same unique sound I was already familiar with, but perhaps the songs are a little less catchy.
This album was fairly big during my time as a DJ and Music Director for a college radio station in the 80's. Unfortunately it hasn't aged as well as a lot of its contemporaries.
Could potentially like this, but would need more listens. But it made me look into Burundi beat and that's really cool.
One associates this act (and it seemed very much an act) with the cool girls with whom one wanted to sleep who liked this band likely because they wanted to sleep with Adam (and/or Marco). Thinking this a novelty band at the time (and not taking it seriously for the pirate get-ups and Napoleonic War fashion and because girls liked them), now one hears a bit more substance and experimentation (especially rhythmically) going on, even if the novelty/gimmicky feel hasn't gone away entirely. Hard not to enjoy it, actually, though other songs and records might be better. Live cuts aren't very impressive.
Really like tones and maybe I’d consider it on a roadtrip. I’m dating 3.6 because it doesn’t feel 3 or 4 worthy
I was prepared to dislike this, but I ended up enjoying a few of the tracks and have saved them to my 80s playlist.
LOVE IT!
Post punk craziness. Like music made for Peter Pan's Lost Boys but they are all post pubescent manchildren. It's okay to here once in my life and the occasional Adam Ant song in the future.
Well, on the positive side, I can see why he was a bit popular at the time. A lot of these songs... I don't think there was an existing genre bucket that these fell comfortably into. I like the sound design in a lot of these. I like the signature drums -- like with Bow Wow Wow -- that are used thru a lot of tracks. The negative is I don't think the actual songs are very good.
Ok
When I was 5/6 I would walk around my house singing these songs because my sister was a big fan. So it was very nostalgic listening!
#229. I'm not going to lie to you, this is kinda terrible. But also I kinda like it. Yeah, I don't know. 3/5: oxymoron
Fun, short and sweet punk rock album. Didn't stick out for me but heck it was a fun listen.
Enjoyed a couple but not enough to push the votage higher
Definitely remember these guys from the MTV days, especially the song Goody Two Shoes. Unfortunately that song is not on this album. For the better portion of the album, thought is was cheesy, MTV produced music. It wasn't terrible, but nothing I would seek out. But then something happened right around The Human Beings through Fall In. These guys went Hard/Punk and this was the best part of the album. I think these guys missed the boat. Should have went all punk and dumped all the cheesy shit. There was something about this stretch of songs I thought was pretty good. Physical may be be favorite, but their no doubt to this listener, this was the best part of the album. Album was interesting for sure. It was like they were trying to figure who they were with with every song. Should have gone punk, Adam. This was a right down the middle for me at 2.5. I think I'll round up due to going hard the last several songs. 2.5
3.5 This dude has a great song called Stand & Deliver that’s not on this album, which is all I really knew about him going in - well, that and the fact he always seems to have this flamboyant, early American colonial/pirate thing going on. And based on just that knowledge, this album was about what I expected it to be - goofy, theatrical post-punk/new wavey stuff with a pirate vibe to it. Stuff that, for whatever reason, works for me. I mean, yeah, it’s not without cheese, but there’s also a certain charm to it, and the songs are mostly fun and catchy. There wasn’t really any one here I was drawn to in particular, but I enjoyed the vibe they offered as a whole - though if I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be the title track, which has a great drumbeat, buildup, and overall “marching to battle” vibe to it. However, the actual best songs to be found here are actually the B-Sides bundled with the Deluxe Edition of the album on Spotify. Like, I honestly think that Press Darlings, Physical, and Fall In trump every song from the actual album - no idea why they were cut. They are admittedly a bit heavier and have more of a punk energy to them, so maybe it was determined they didn’t fit the vibe, but in my opinion, that’s their appeal, and I think the diversity of the album would have greatly benefited from their inclusion. This certainly isn’t any kind of masterpiece, but it was a fun listen for sure. I’m not walking away with any kind of newfound respect or admiration for Adam Ant, but I am walking away with probably a couple new songs saved on Spotify.
Kings of the wild frontier tex.
This is some pretty fun post-punk/new-wave, the duo drum sound is not something i've heard too often. It's a little front heavy but wasn't really any particularly weak tracks. Solid stuff.
The lesson from this album is - if you're gonna do something, go all out and do it! And The Ants sure are doing it! What "it" is, exactly is unclear, but it's sure is being done! 🐜🐜🐜
The album is fine but very samey songs and not enough familiar songs for me.
This album shines when it leans into harder electric guitar and drum segments, especially with the timbre of the singer’s voice. Second half is much stronger. And we love a good pirate-themed song! Listened to: walking in prospect park. Favorite tracks: Ants Invasion, Kings of the Wild Frontier, Jolly Roger
Too goofy for me

Nothing special, very chaotic.
Kings of the Wild Frontier is the second album by English new wave band Adam and the Ants. It was UK's best selling album in 1981. This pop-punk experience has tons of cultural references and themes that made it a fun album. Adam Ant found his groove with this album and together with the band this album became critically acclaimed. I liked this album as it perfectly embodies the late 70's / early 80's vibes, without going overboard. Fans of pop and/or new wave will enjoy this album too.
I'm over 900 albums in, and this is definitely one of the strangest I've heard. It's so close to being a pop record, but whenever you think you know where it's going, it goes a completely different direction. It took a few tracks to fully adjust. Definitely one of the most "theatrical" vocals I've heard on this? It definitely feels like an album built around the drums, which feel primal and super important. I don't particularly think this is for me, but I do think it's probably something that should be here. Favorite tracks: "Ants Invasion", "Don't Be Square (Be There)"
These little buggers made no impression on me, but I feel I'd best not ignore them. I'll have to come back to this and listen again to give it a fair rating.
Doesn't feel like anything super special. Fun 80's romp.
decent background music. nothing really stood out. but it was not bad
It was definitely something new and different in 1980. But it's not "strong" enough for my personal taste. Good direction, nothing extraordinary.
Probably a 2.5 but a 3 because it’s actually a good addition to this list. 1 half is superior.
Better than I thought it would be. I knew a couple tunes, the rest were solid too. Love the drums.
Challenging. There are aspects of this project I quite liked - it's angry, biting, driving. My issues lay in Ant's willowy vocals, repetitive lines and some particularly weak tracks (see "Jolly Roger"). Closer to punk than anything. Well worth listening to, even if it won't be frequent rotation material.
Getting really sick of these endless "remasters" that throw in so many alternate takes and fluff that didn't make the original cut. Adam Ant was always good cheeky fun, but a little goes a long way. Love the thundering drum sound, but not for 90 minutes straight. The original was good, but more is not better.
So 1980s New Wave.
Talking Heads vibes. Not bad.
Note to self: Adam and the Ants, and Alien Ant Farm, are NOT the same 🐜 HL: title track, “Dog Eat Dog”, “Feed Me to the Lions”
It's okay ......
The epitome of New Romantic style with a unique sound.
Good band, 80’s somewhat fast paste music that was/is probably used in clubs
Some good songs
Must listen? Hmmmm Adam ant was that link between the first new wave and the second new wave - how the pretenders were usurped by Duran Duran if you like. None of this is bad. Just history. So is this album: Great fun? Tick Lots of filler? Tick Marvellous singles? he’d do better. But ant music is a banger. Dated horribly? Tick and cross. Production has surprisingly held up. Is it 5 stars? Nope. 2.5.
Fun
Some fun stuff on here. I like when the band plays into the punk rock elements of the group but overall the album didn’t grab me
Unerwartet vielseitig.
Probably one of the best punk albums I've listened to, which is not saying much
Enjoyable punk music. Songs were all over the place. Fun UK album.
It’s not bad, and I like New Wave but I feel like people came along later and did this kind of music a lot better. I feel like I’m being generous with 3 stars here but it wasn’t bad.
I really liked parts of it but then each song would just turn into too much happening at once
Did nothing for me
This was enjoyable. I liked Los Rancheros in particular. These guys have a kind of show tune punk thing going on.
grunge atope
Much better than I expected. Pretty funky. 3/5
at times it reminded me of the talking heads. at other times it reminded me of darker more goth type bands like siouxsie sioux and the banshees. certainly an interesting listen with all sorts of musical influences.
I've always liked the Adam & The Ants hits. They've always struck me as just like they were having an absolute ball. Living their best Dandy lives. This was their second album, with fewer big hits but very much the same vibe. I enjoyed it. It's just fun music. I love Adam Ants voice, and the music has a dance floor edge to it. It's ripe for some re-editing and doubling down on the danceability.
Ging klar
Adam was certainly out there with this one. Solidly 80s sound but not an 80s record really, there's some nice world music touches here. Inventive, but some dross as well.
Very ecclectic and worth another listen. The album has a good mix of different kinds of sounds.
Really good fun to hear this after so many years. While he seemed something of a novelty act all those years ago, one hears now how he deserved credit for experimentation, especially for rhythmic innovation. The drumming is especially kinetic (as Jacko apparently thought, too). Not sure this is his best work. His legacy is surely a handful of the hits, which represent the act well and fairly.
Favorite Tracks: The Human Beings Killer in the Home Jolly Roger
1 very sexy man teetering precariously on the precipice of a gimmick.
Not necessarily good, but weird enough to earn a three instead of a two.
fun 80's stuff
Solid 3.
Mostly simple background music.
This was significantly more interesting than I thought it would be: gloomy cowboy and pirate vibes with a touch of music hall, new wave and postpunk. I heard some Duran Duran, Blur, Specials and Talking Heads in there.
I was but a pup when this came out, and would have been a fan of Adam and the Ants back in the day, with their distinctive double drum set sound and the glamour of their post punk style. This album was a taster.for what was to come from them, and although I enjoyed reminiscing as I played this album, I wouldn't be in a big rush to play it again.
Too much
🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️👨🎤
nice
Fun pop music. Wouldn't really call it stand out, but I'm sure at the time and with the visual elements (music videos, live shows, etc) it would be mind blowing.
I actually owned an Adam Ant cd in the day. This was pure 80s, but pretty good.
Although all very silly nowadays and having aged like milk, it's still a fun slice of the 80s in parts
Well.... ok I guess
Was hoping Prince Charming was on this album. One of the better sounds from the New Romantic era of the 80s.
It was a fun 80s listen
A unique LP with energy to spare, and a great sidestep of British musical tropes at the time. Was surprised at how lively and energetic the whole thing felt from the get-go, and while the ordeal starts to wear a bit thin near the end of its runtime, it at least finds a diverse set of melodic paths to get there instead of beating a compositional dead horse throughout.
I was just talking about this album minutes ago...and it was also the first album I ever bought! I'd go as far as to say that I might not even be in this group (or a huge music fan) had I not stumbled onto Adam and the Ants on American Bandstand when this album came out.
Funny I never owned any Adam Ant records and therefore only knew what my alternative station played. I like Antmusic the best. Idk if I'll ever put this on. It was enjoyable but I don't have a connection to it beyond that.
From the first drum rhythm of Dog Eat Dog this becomes recognizable as Adam & The Ants. For a band that didn't get much airplay in N America aside from a big video hit or 2, it's interesting that even 40(!) years later I can identify them as having a sound. Which might be case enough for them to be on this list. I knew they were UK-big but hadn't realized how big their albums were (all 3 topped at least one UK chart). Super fun throwback - obviously very dated-sounding but in this case I'm loving it, well...some of it. It's pretty inconsistent with some not-great songs (e.g. "Feed Me to the Lions" is weak) and to be fair, their sound gets repetitive. But the best of this make it at least a fun if not worthy listen e.g. my fave: "Antmusic" which I hadn't heard in ages. I WANT MY MTV! 6/10 3 stars <n.b. only considering the 12 songs from the initial release, not the collected works of The Ants' entire history which Apple Music seems to think I need to hear...>
Bizarre, fun 80s post punk. Adam & The Ants pack such a vast sound palette into their records. There's a few songs I don't care for, but the majority of the album is just a good, fun time.
Ok
In terms of campy Punk/New Wave albums, it does alright. I just don't know why I would spin this over some early clash, dead or alive, or simple minds. Still a decent listen if you vibe with it.
A decent look at the genesis of new wave and the Burundi beat but you can tell it was rushed and has some filler
Weird and sort of catchy.
More punky than o expected. Good listen
Glam post-punk?? Reading the Wikipedia page for this article is a trip because it makes this album sound like it's the greatest thing ever recorded, and here I thought it kind of sucked. I didn't hate it but I was glad when it was over.
Pretty solid album with some high points. Dog Eat Dog, Antmusic, and Kings of the Wild Frontier are all great songs. I dug the drumming on this album, it provided a good driving rhythm on a lot of the songs.
enjoyed it but felt like some of the songs just blended into each other and it wasn't very captivating
Decent
I feel like the album was full of very interesting musical ideas, but the end product wasn't quite as exciting as I hoped.
This record defies all logic. It is so bad that it's good confusingly successful but I have to admit some catchy tunes and the corky lyrics have me tap in my toe.
Yeah I dig this album it’s upbeat it’s got the energy and it really puts out an 80’s vibe like dance like no one is watching. However, it’s best with the brain turned off, after I looked over the lyrics I couldn’t help but be a bit less impressed but the album is still a good one to jam out to.
Some great songs, but not sure it holds up over time.
Begint cool, 2e helft wat zwakker. Leuk en origineel.
Good fun. It's got a real dressing up and playing vibe. I can see why it was a smash with the kids at the time. Pop, though, innit?
"...now let's it sung properly!" Antmusic for sex people. Sexmusic for ant people.
3.5
Ok I guess
Love me some new wave. This shits fun and, dare i say, sexy?
This didn't age well imo, but I can imagine it was popular in it's time. Bonus star for pulling some Black Sabbath inspiration for Ant Invasion.
An album from the year I was born! What a unique sound. I wouldn’t be surprised if this kickstarter that whole style of music specific to that era. What a trip.
Ant Music and Dog Eat Dog are remembered from childhood. The rest is bonkers enough to be a bit interesting.
Ah, memories
Shake them hips!
Interesting album, enjoyed some of the tracks, may give it another listen at a later date
So I really wanted to like this. Its unique and kept me mostly interested the entire way through this album. I enjoyed a lot of the drum and bass work on here and liked how prominently they stood out in the mix on the production side. However, too many times it would set a solid foundation for a song and I would think "oh it would be really cool if they took it this direction" instead more often than not it wouldn't really do anything. These guys get an idea for a song and just beat it into the ground to the point where it becomes repetitive. I feel like most of these songs although already pretty short really could be cut in half and still accomplish all the same things. Speaking on repetition, I didn't really care for the lead singers voice and it isn't helped when he's constantly wailing the same lines over and over again in his out of key voice. I'd give this album a 2.5 if I could but because that isn't possible I'm left in a position where I either have to round up or round down and I'm not sure where to go with that. I think the more I listened to it I could find more to appreciate about the music but I really don't want to so I'll just preemptively give it a 3 even though I really don't think this album deserves it with where I'm at with it right now.
Fine new wave. Nothing really memorable here.
Oh wow this takes me back! These were crazy days- not really New Wave, more Pop in my opinion. This guy was everywhere- on telly, on the radio and on billboards. Very accomplished self-publicist. It's pretty good too- he got VERY excessive later on and then like so many he crashed and burned.
3 A classic
It's kinda weird-ish. It's not bad, but didn't blow me away either. It definitely has some highlights.
80s nondescript
Kind of like a not-quite-as-good Oingo Boingo. I'd listen to them again, but I'd just spend the whole time thinking about how Boingo is better.
I quite enjoyed the late 70s new wave sound. It reminded me of XTC. A decent album but there weren’t many major stand out moments for me.
The 80s were an interesting time for music. A lot of experimentation going on. Groups like Adam & the Ants, Bow Wow Wow, and Duran Duran were doing things with tribal rhythms or the Bo Diddley Beat. I definitely give kudos for trying things out. Some of it has aged well and some not so much. This album is good, listenable, but nothing really stands out for me - all the tracks kind of run together. 3 stars.
normally i like weirdness but it was unevenly dispersed across this so it felt not great to me. still some really funny moments, but felt like it could have used some revisions
Very heavy on the old glam rock. I only knew ‘Antmusic’ before I came into this album but there are other similarly catchy tracks which make this a fun album to listen to. ‘Killer in the Home’ was a nice end to ‘Side One’ though there haven’t been any stand out tracks so far.
Pop-rock un tanto original. Con reminiscencias de los 80. Se deja escuchar. Nada especialmente reseñable.
Maso
Not bad, I just don't need this. No known void to fill. thank you
To me, this looked and sounded a lot like David Bowie. Maybe it was just me staring at Adam (or is that one of the Ants?) on the cover that made me think that. Decent rock album, very radio friendly.
Har aldri sjekka ut Adam & The Ants skikkelig, men va bedre enn forventa
2.5
I have always associated AatA with the silly dress-up seen on the front cover of this record, and that ridiculous song 'Stand And Deliver'. However, this is as good a slice of 80s New Wave / Post-Punk you'll ever hear and takes the band out of joke territory, where I previously had them filed. 'The Human Beings' sticks out for me, really simple, repetitive hook, love it. 3 / 5 stars.
For a 1980 album this really sounds very 80s. The use of two drummers is great too. That said, it is a little chaotic to be palatable by today's standards.
Wanted to enjoy this more… there were a few decent tracks, but the filler just drags it out a bit. Enjoyed the title track, and Feed Me To The Lions. They were probably my highlights. None of it was terrible, but it didn’t really jump out. Quite a standard new wave record
Not heard of these guys before but thought it was alright. Nothing particularly stood out but there were some enjoyable tracks. Highlights: Antmusic Killer In the Home
Definetely a well done new wave album, but nothing so spectacular in my opinion.
An album is a bit much of the same sound, but I did like the Burundi beat and the song Killer in the home.
Great eighties fun. Also, The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson is just a grimdark Antmusic.
I listened to this one twice and I thought it was alright overall. The repeating of the lyrics was an interesting choice.
Cool
Meh
first listen ughhhhhhh
I like this, but the production, for me, is not fulsome enough
Pretty crazy how Adam and the ants went from sounding like animal collective to David Byrne and David Bowie. Some songs were a miss, but I enjoyed most of it.
This was super interesting to listen to. It very much had throw shit at the all and see what sticks. It was a wild ride. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. Something to return to from time to time though.
A very wild intro to the 80’s but not in a bad way! Very different and very good sounds in this album, love the drums and the repetitiveness of it. First time listening to this album and the band itself, very solid album all the way through, really enjoyed it!
