could've been moodier

Bit like Rolling Stones. Boring.

3 out of 5. Feels like it should have been a 4 and there are good moments here. That's how a lot of debut albums are to me.

Cool dark vibes - bonus points for cool band name and album cover

I really enjoyed this, but I feel like it won’t leave a very lasting impression.

file this under "decent, but won't listen to again"

I do not have any nostalgia for Echo and the Bunnymen. I think they fall into the category of bands that are talented and make fine music, whose influence I recognize and appreciate, yet have absolutely no interest in listening to regularly. 3⭐️

Ah! Finally, some post-punk. Enjoyable first listen, pure classic post-punk sound released at the peak of the genre. But can't help it but compare to other post-punk releases from 1980–we have "Remain in Light" by Talking Heads, "Closer" by Joy Division and "Seventeen Seconds" by the Cure to say the least. This album simply blanks compared to these 3, however it still seems like a solid debut effort by these guys. Definitely very enjoyable, at least 3 stars for sure, 3.5/5.0. A few songs from this going to my post-punk/new wave playlist. "Going Up" - an opening track and "Rescue" really stood out for me along, to a lesser extent, a couple of other tracks.

I get why this made the list but it wasn’t my favorite.

Fine, agree with the top review that it seems a bit filler in the context of best albums of all time. Odd, considering some standouts on the record.

= to the Beatles As far as post punk goes, this is listenable

It was alright. Nothing really stood out on this album for me one way or the other. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Mostly ambivalent.

This reminded me of Interpol. Pretty good. Easy listening.

Not bad, just put on some Donnie Darko and youre ready to go.

Didn't dislike it by any means. Definitely had some cool moments. Nothing seemed to come together to a great song though. 2.5.

british

This was just ok and hardly worth the reason to be on this list. 5/10.

I am only familiar with punk bands in the 70s, like Ramones, and that's it. This sounds kind of like them with the voice and the bass drum production. But sometimes riff like Crocodiles and beautiful piano playing like Villiers Terrace make this album shine. Listening in low volume, this album is still very expressive.

I've heard of them but thought they were more synth based. This one sounds like there are sonic connections to punk, REM, Talking Heads, New Wave, which all makes sense given 1980.

I could have been tripping but I picked up a nice little late 60's, early 70''s, throw back vibe from this. Not bad, not bad at all...

British rock/punk(?) isn't a genre I know much about or listen to. The albums has a good coherent vibe throughout. While not a genre I listen to a lot I still enjoyed listening through this.

This was ok.

About as middle of the road as it comes

If imitation is the highest form of flattery, these guys were flattering a ton of people. I’m impressed by the range. I’m not getting off on this album, but I’m digging it.

This was pretty cool. I only know Nocturnal Me by these guys (though it’s not on this record). That song seems to be a pretty good depiction of what the band is like and I enjoyed it.

Average album of the era

I can recognize and appreciate the influence that this band had over other artists and I recognize elements that would show up more later in history; however, it sounds dated by now.

Dad- 6 Mom- 5 Mike- NA Lori- 6 Michael- 6 Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 5.75

3.4 It's quite good in parts. Really liked some of the tracks - Rescue, Monkeys, Going Up. However, others weren't as strong, and I felt the ending was quite weak. Nice bit of early post-punk, almost setting the scene for the darker sides of new-wave.

Seems very influential to be, but also something that has been so far surpassed, that it aged somewhat poorly. Still a decent listen, but most likely not as impactful as it would've been when it came out

Very 80s, crocodiles was good, a very much quiet rage against the big boys

Driving beat, ringing guitars, dark and moody themes make this Post Punk, which I enjoyed most of the time. Repeating the same line over and over again makes this a lot less enjoyable.

Mostly enjoyable, felt like a lot of inspiration for later Post-Punk

I like Echo And The Bunnymen but I don’t love them, I previously had their album Porcupine and considered it a 3.5/5 a pretty good album but not great, this album was pretty similar I like the instrumentation and the vocals throughout but I find the production to be a little flat. I loved “Stars Are Stars” though

I love E&TB so they get 3/5 but outside of the three GREAT tracks it’s kind of a forgettable album

Fav: Crocodiles Least Fav: Pride One of those albums that I was about to write off before immediately reaching the best songs

I prefer their sound at its most haunting. Some instrumental breakdowns were welcome surprises, but overall the songs blend together making the full album a dull (if inoffensive) listen. The vocalist has a pleasant tone but does nothing memorable with it. Crocodiles just melds into the post-punk albums pile, never distinct enough to stand out.

***An ok album

Was alright

I am familiar with the name Echo And The Bunnymen and have fond memories of it. But that must have been a long time ago. The music is typical of the 80s sound. It wasn't outstanding, and I had almost forgotten it, and rightly so. The album wasn't annoying, but it wasn't inspiring either. 3/5

Extreme late 70s/early 80s post punk vibes, close your eyes and it could be U2 or Simple Minds, somehow Ian McCulloch sounds like both Bono & Jim Kerr, depending who you are thinking of at that moment... A tidy package all in all.

I like Echo and the Bunnymen, but not as much as Robert Dimery, clearly. It's an OK album but I never found their first album quite as compelling as their second/third album. It's part of a UK musical movement but maybe Joy Division did it better?

Not their best, but still good.

A band that influenced so many bands I love, but because I am a philistine with no respect for history or legacy, I much prefer all those bands to these OGs.

I love this time in the early 80s... dark, moody, and completely unsure of where to go with punk rock. They almost have no filter, but they sound good. Maybe this is the bane of 80s music.

I like their best songs, but overall pretty boring.

Eurythmics was disappointing. Echo was not. I think I like this probably because it’s early. Good not great but way more rock and guitar that I thought. 6.2

I never got the die hard love for EatB, but it was fine.

It was fine. Nothing quite memorable.

I liked this one, wasn’t able to get really into it though. Best song: Pride Notable(s): Villiers Terrace, The Pictures On My Wall

rock pero no m produce nada

Never heard before. It’s ok I reckon. Not much variety though.

Pretty cool. Never listened to them before but I like their vibe.

I really like Ian McCulloch's vocals. It's good music but unfortunately it also sounds A LOT like a cheap version of other bands I prefer (Joy Division, Talking Heads, etc) Nothing really stood up to make an impact on me. 5,5/10 fav songs : Monkeys & Rescue

This was fine, but that's all. Not great.

I like Echo and the Bunnymen, but this album isn't quite up to par with their later work. Do It Clean is a fun song though.

Solid 80s alternative, but not their best.

Decent 1980 debut from EatBunnies. No hits or standouts, but an easy listen. Kinda reminded me of the somberness of The Cure with an REM vibe. Best song for me is Villier Terrace. Crocodiles surfaces at (2.65*s)

The thing with Echo and the Bunnymen is that I remember my mind being blown when I realised that Echo is a drum machine. This means whenever I listen now, I’m always looking for any telltale signs that the drummer isn’t actually a person playing. And I can never find any. Perhaps that isn’t the point of this album, but it’s still where my mind goes to. Anyway, this is a decent enough listen. It’s nothing revolutionary to me, but I’d still say I enjoyed it.

Honestly, I expected more from Echo and the Bunnymen because of how much I love The Killing Moon. It was still pretty good and enjoyable, very 80's alt. I would give it another listen for sure, hopefully I'll get more out of it the next time around.

I usually like the post punk sound but I wasn't really feeling this one so much. I felt it would do well with repeat listens. The songs didn't feel distinctive enough from each other with the result that seemed like sets of noises giving way to other noises.

Not a bad sound - sit alongside The Smiths and Cure.

I read a memoir by a woman who started her career in the music industry working for the Beatles at Apple, and ended it at what she considered her rock bottom - being a tour manager for Echo and the Bunnymen. She honestly writes about it like it’s the ultimate humiliation. I thought about that book while listening to Crocodiles because while they’re no Beatles (who is?) , they are pretty good. Certainly not a mortifying stain on anyone’s CV.

Solid 80s rock.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the band, the dark melodies and the chime like guitar sounds sounds, but apart from being a really good debut I can’t quite see what distinguishes this one. Having given Nina Simone a 4 yesterday (really a 4.5 but I tasted it in a hurry at ten to midnight), I can’t give this more than 3-3.5.

Second best band ever from Liverpool. You can hear what they will become but they are not quite there yet. 3.5

This is ok but it's kind of dull.

This sits a few steps below the post punk, I really enjoy. I like it but it doesn’t grab me the way that post punk usually does

Crocodiles is for sure a benchmark in goth rock and post punk. I think it is one of the most 'tinny' sounding albums of this era, due to what they were recording on and with. Ian is totally consistent as a lead vocalist, even this early into the band's existence. The lyrics are pretty esoteric equally reflective and melancholic. The song structures are both isometric and linear, per the early post punk of the time. Obviously.. the Cure fucking exploded with this exact sound pretty much. I do think there is a more primitive nature to what Crocodiles does in particular, for the grooves are rigid and repetitive to perhaps dilution at times. Do It Clean, Stars Are Stars, Rescue and Villiers Terrace all stand out for obvious reasons, but mostly because they are a bit more compelling as full songs than the rest of the songs on this one. There are better Bunnymen albums.. I blame the sonics and songwriting on this one.

There's no killing moon on this one. Altogether a fine post-punk album. Not amongst the best in my opinion, but it was a fine listen. Mid 3

Ocean Rain is the one you want to listen to

Their debut runs about as standard post punk as it goes I think, mainly because it's not quite as full of the psychedelic ideas that make EatB unique later on in Ocean Rain; however, average post punk runs at about a "pretty good" for me, so it's enjoyable no matter what, maybe in a few more listens I'll warm up to it

I have never heard of Echo & the Bunnymen before so I had no expectations. After listening, I'd say it was ..fine. Nothing really blew me away, but nothing made me want to turn it off either. I listened to it twice and the second time I enjoyed it a little more.

generic 80s rock album

it sounds good but nothing really excites me. it’s just… there. “rescue” slapped. “villiers terrace” was also good. i was not interested enough to listen to the extra two tracks from the US version, “do it clean” and “read it in the books”. 3/5

Strong record as you'd expect, even if not a true favourite.

Was okay, feel like it probably sounded better when it was released

Album 799 of 1089 Echo And The Bunnymen - Crocodiles (1980) Rating : 3.5 / 5 " brooding lyrics, psychedelic influences, and tight musicianship" Good listen. Remember seeing this one on the Rolling Stone charts back in the day but never indulged.

It's fine, nothing special.

I never got into Echo and the Bunnymen and I don't really know why: they're adjacent to a lot of bands I love out of a time I think was pretty exciting for music, but listening to this I think I know why. Totally innocuous album. Some of these songs are really great, some of them are not so great. Almost wanna give this a 4 because a couple of moments really hit for me, but overall it feels pretty one note. I think people doing something similar did it a little better.

Chill and groovy. Probably won’t be back on my own I could be convinced to.

I think I should have liked this more, it just wasn’t as memorable as I was hoping. Finished faster than it felt like it would because the songs were pretty good, but I can’t really tell you much about anything I had listened to.

It was good, but I'll probably forget about it in a week.

Good English new wave but I feel they have better albums

It was fine

It's not bad, but my main feeling is gratitude that Oasis eventually came along and put an end to the brooding 80s.

I don’t see how this album stands out in its category. Extremely mid.

The album is 38 min long but why does it sounds so repetitive ?

No stand out songs here, but vocalist Ian McCulloch has long been one of my favorite new wave singers. Plaintive without being whiny.

The sound reminds me a little of other bands from that early 80's time: The Cure, REM, U2, etc. I didn't get into any song in particular.

When I think of Echo and the Bunnymen, I think of some of their hits like "The Killing Moon" and "Lips Like Sugar." Elements of some of these songs hint toward those hits, while never quite hooking me in the same way.

Like if you sprinkled some Stooges on Joy Division - with maybe a splash of the Cure and even the Cars. I enjoyed it but feel like I should have liked it more than I did.

One of the easiest albums I’ve ever tuned out. Couldn’t remember one melody if I tried. A general vibe will come to me if I think about it hard enough, but the lack of range here would have been very striking if I had been interested enough to pay attention. Energy was up and when I tuned back in for the last half of the final track, I was happy to find I enjoyed it. Fine work, gents, I guess. 3/5

Compared to their other stuff… meh

liked songs: Going Up, The Pictures on My Wall, Not bad, not great. 2.75

Probably one of the most middling albums on the list and the global ratings reflect it. It's 80's British synthpop / new wave. One of many on the list, but better put together and more punch than others. Still, I don't really think it justifies its position here and I don't see myself revisiting this soon. I like how it seems to be a bit less polished than their other album on here, not edgy enough to be like the post punk and new wave I like though.

Ahhh I think I like their sound, but I'm struggling to pick out something I'd actually wanna relisten to on a regular basis!

Really not sure what to make of this album. It's cromulent, has a bunch of interesting moments, but nothing really stands out to me. It feels like an odd choice to include on a list like this. Overall pretty neat though!

It was perfectly fine. Not really sure why it was on the must-listen list.

I love Echo and the Bunnymen but this is not their best. Flipped between 2.5 and 3, especially on second listen, but the really good songs are good enough that I bumped it up. I think a lot of them will make it to my Playlist, but I dont see the album as a whole becoming regular.

Cool guitars Nothing stands out crazy but that’s ok

Was OK, yeah.

Solid 3.75

not bad, nothing special

Good album, I never listened to it before. I was surprised that it didn't have any of the Echo and the Bunnymen hits , but it was still a cohesive piece

It’s regular Brit Rock

A sound that underwhelmed me in my high school/college days. Apparently, not much has changed in my musical tastes since then.

Debut albums of bands who would go on to have better albums should have asterisks next to them. I get why I’m listening to it but I shouldn’t have to.

i absolutely loved this, felt like i was in an episode of something lol, they’ve got that ‘the cure’ essence its so good, sounds like something i’d hear in a vintage shop

was pretty good!! surprisingly not a favourite, would give it a 3.5 if i could! i did add "villiers terrace" to my playlist, really really liked the sound of that one!

It's not really my thing but I get it. A pretty solid 3-stars.

3/5. You can definitely tell they have not found their sound yet and are rather an imitation of other bands. Fortunately, they still sound great and you can see the direction they are heading. Interesting lyrics and sharp front and center guitar. This was a good listen but didn't give me many new feelings about Echo or this genre in general. Best Song: Pictures On My Wall, Rescue, Do It Clean

5/10…new wave / 80er goth

Alright

More 80s post punk. I can only handle in small doses.

Rating: 3.5/5 | Favorite Track: Pictures On My Wall --- Not my favorite Echo and the Bunnymen album, but still has some good early goth tracks. Pretty decent debut album.

This is a fine album but I really question why there are like three echo in the bunnymen albums on this list. Any of them would be fine but we don’t need this many

Decent songs. Good guitar-play. 3/5

Upbeat post punk with a darker twist at times. It’s well made, not necessarily boring, but I didn’t really love anything on it either.

Solid, pleasant on the ears. Nothing incredible going on though. 7/10.

solid 80s rock album!

Very decent new wavy album

Ah Punk? Hät aasatzwiis au ächli Gmeinsamkeite mit REM. Typischi Hitparade- und Radiomusig us däre Ziit. E

This is another group that I know of but have never really heard. I have quite a few friends from my time California that swear by these guys. We will see… Garage rock/punkishness, I certainly don’t hate it, but I can’t say I love it either. 3.4? I’m not quite sure I’m ready to round this one up to 4 stars.

Good album - not my preferred era of music, but a catchy, enjoyable album overall.

The best of the so far 3 albums by them

It's Fine? There are a billion of these 80's British post punk albums on the list. I like the genre but it's way over represented on this list. 6/10

“Echo and the Bunnymen, what a dreadful group. They've let me down. There's this duality I feel; I can think other people have let me down, yet as an artist I think that I can do whatever I want to do and I'm not letting anyone down. People trust us not to be stupid, at least in a way.” — Robert Smith https://www.spin.com/featured/the-cure-robert-smith-march-1988-cover-story-cure-all/

The second place runner up band on the original pre-emo pioneers. Although probably as good as the cure they didnt have big commercial success. This album is solid and well balanced. Good representation of what was to come for this type of music very charactaristic and great example to listen to.

Oh wow. Another 80s British post-punk debut album from a band with multiple albums on the list. Never seen that before. Whatever. At least this one's good. Echo & The Bunnymen are definitely a band worthy of being here, but I don't know if they need three albums or even two. Obviously, Ocean Rain is a classic, but Crocodiles just isn't on that album's level in my eyes. It's good, sure. The style is solid. I really like the bass in particular. The singing fits the vibes and the writing is alright. However, I just don't find this album as interesting as something like Ocean Rain. None of the songs on here really speak to me like how something like "The Killing Moon" did on that album. None of the songs here are bad, but none of them are masterpieces. This album is basically just a solid collection of post-punk songs and that's it. It's a good first showing, sure, but there are plenty of albums in the genre before and since this one that I'd rather listen to. Crocodiles is good, but not great. High 3/5.

Just…..why?

Decent.

Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of guitar? Well in Rescue you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has some good drums? Well in Do It Clean you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of drums? Well in Crocodiles you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song.

I don't like this because I don't like the instruments used in it and I don't like how old type of music it is. I would not recommend this album to someone else because I feel like in the generation people don't really like this type of music. I would give this album a solid 3 out of 5 stars.

I guess I've heard these guys on this list before, but I can't remember a thing about them. Not bad for an early punk record, things sound pretty polished. Very indicative of its era, but not super memorable outside of that.

Didn't really stick out, thought it would be reggae based on the band name

listened to this a looong time ago on dads record player. Haven’t really listened to them since. Definitely fits the 80s goth/cure/joy division vibes. Love the bass throughout. Good guitar tones.

6.5/10

Not bad but too 80’s emo for me.

Good moody music but I found it a little boring

This is like a sampler platter of post-punk sounds. Not a bad thing, but obviously the band found their sound later. I enjoyed this although it was a bit unmemorable.

Certainly not thier peak but a notable debut non the less. A great foundation was layer here!

Later records are much better, this one gets boring pretty quickly. A standout is Rescue.

this band really so unremarkable to me i gaslighted myself into thinking i had already gotten this This is fine but I just do not care.

Where are the hits.

As picks for this list go, this one is OK, but I think it means the other Echo album can leave the list.

Solidly listenable but forgettable.

Great sound. (25 known/50 new)

Cool enough listen. Stars are Stars and Rescue as take aways.

I know exactly one Echo & the Bunnymen song: 'The Killing Moon', from Rock Band 3. That song is not on this album, but its essence certainly is. I deem this genre "80s Brit-goth". Enjoyable enough, but not remarkable.

Alright

Those Brits sure could make some 80s alternative

Enjoyed this. I can't say there are whole songs I loved but pieces of them all were impressive and definitely in the genre I enjoy. Sounds like they were finding their way. Glad we are along for the ride!

Outstandingly average.

Yep. Sounds like Echo and the Bunnymen. Well crafted sounds and excellent musicianship but I'll stick to the songs I know when I want to listen to their brand of post punck

This was a nice album. Id known and generally wasnt bothered by the Echo and the Bunnyman id heard. It turns out that it was their later work that was too close but not close enough to my own formative musical tastes. This early stuff seems like a lovely bridge between the late 70's stuff like stooges and into the 80's stuff

I like the band, but this isn't their best album, at least to my taste.

Listened to the US-version. Nothing bad and nothing outstanding. But I like it. 2,5

Vaguely attractive.

I'm not a fan of 80s music for the most part. If anything, this 1001 album challenge has confirmed that. There are a few bands I can think of that stand out, though, and one of those is the Talking Heads. I feel like Echo and the Bunnymen sound a lot like early Talking Heads when they're at their best. Which makes sense because 1980 when this album came out might as well be the late 70s in terms of music. So, this album was fine, and there are a few tracks I really enjoyed ("Do It Clean" being my favorite of the album). But, a lot of it sounded the same, and I felt that while it was mostly enjoyable, it wasn't anything remarkable, and I was ready to be done with this by the end.

If what Jim Morrison was the front man of the Velvet Underground, well they’d be way better off. Echo And The Bunnymen are the proof. Love the guitar, needs more listens. 6.8/10

Unterdurchschnittlich durchschnittlich

FAVO: Do it clean, Monkeys, Crocodiles

Can't tell if they influenced the clash and Duran Duran, or the opposite. Ok new wave but not my fave.

Awesome, jangly, 80’s indie rock! I dig it, I dig it way mucho!

Interesting post punk, I’m glad it’s here as I wouldn’t have sought it out. I love the chorused guitars.

Wyszlo niezle

Not the EATB that I'm used to from their other big album. A bit darker feeling? Not bad just not a huge fan of it either. 3.5

Early Echo. Very standard music. It was OK.

For a genre that is not my favorite, this album wasn’t too bad. Probably not a re-listen for me though.

Their debut album. I've only heard Ocean Rain prior to this but I found their style of post-punk to be quite boring. In comparison, Crocodiles is a bouncier affair with more energy and pop-oriented hooks. Echo And The Bunnymen remind me of a post-punkier REM at times, sharing an affinity for cleaner guitar tones and eccentric basslines. For that, I think Crocodiles is slightly better, but only ever just good.

Kinda just alright, not memorable and not bad

Fun and highly listenable.

favorites: do it clean all that jazz

Very uneven album. The best songs are the ones where the bass is able to lay down a riff and just sit in a groove for the songs duration. If the song doesn't have that bass line, it's not very good in my opinion. Solid highs, and uninteresting lows. Top tracks: Do It Clean, Monkeys, Rescue

80s new wave, I tend to listen instead to Ocean Rain (because of the Killing Moon), but this is definitely in the same vein.

Enjoyable 3.5

# Album Name: Crocodiles # Artist: Echo And The Bunnymen # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Not bad but not as good i was expecting. Few good tracks like Pride, Rescue and Pictures on my wall. It doesnt seem to hit the highs of the other singles ive heard from the band. Overall just an OK album. # Top Tunes: Pride, Rescue and Pictures on my wall # Would I listen to it again? hmmmm

Poquito.

Sounded fine. Epitomizes the 1001 albums list.

I have a headache and feel not so hot so my opinions rn may be off. Not bad but didn’t do anything crazy. The birthday party played on the auto play of random songs after this lol.

5/10 - it was mid. I didn’t know that echo and the bunny men were so into the bee movie

Okay post-punk. Like a not-so-depressing Cure.

there are better echo and the bunnymen but you will not go wrong with any echo and the bunnymen could i write poetry to this? y

Another example of a debut album being chosen for this list when a later release would have been the better choice. At this early stage in their career, Echo & The Bunnymen sound like their contemporaries in U2, but with darker lyrics and a better drummer.

This is not their best work, but it's a good enough representation of their sound.

Nothing memorable but not offensive

Very dated. 2.5

Meh, nothing really grabbing me, but not bad.

I was anticipating this album, but if The Fountain is a 5, then Crocodiles is a solid 3.

I thought it had good vibes, I like the band name

EtB's first album is energetic. And okay.

I think this is a pretty typical early 80s new wave album. I’ve heard the single “Rescue” a bunch of times. Other than that, the album was good. Not a lot of variety of songs mostly because the lead singer doesn’t have much range, but he does have a pleasant voice.

Honestly I think I found this underwhelming. I kept waiting for more, for something to prove to me why this album belonged here but I just couldn’t find it. I’ve heard their stuff before and I think I continue to be content when hearing it.

Villiers Terrace.

I couldn't tell you a single song from this album. It was perfectly decent, but nothing stood out at all.

I was excited for this as I really enjoy some of their bigger hits. Said hits were not on this album. The style and performance were consistent but no songs stood out to me particularly. I did find myself looking to the end and seeing how long songs had left before they were over. Perhaps I got myself too excited and set this album up to fail. 5/10

I liked the previous Bunnyguys album better

Good for a debut but not great

Don't Starve Bunnymen really brought out Cynthia's piano from Gen 4 Pokemon for Villers Terace????!!!!? Very nice album, I'm tempted to give it a 4 although I just think it's not quite there. Crocodiles, Rescue, and Villiers Terace are 4-worthy, although the rest of the album is a solid 3. The instruments and guitar riffs consistently pop off, and they work with the vocals well. There are some songs with a bit of that "Doors-inspired psychedelia" (Spotify description) guitar drivel, although it's not as often as other albums... I give it a 3.51

Soft, nice to listen to alone

1st song was good.

Quite neat and sounds dark that it almost sounds like goth. Overall tho, it's just another '80s British pop that I'll forget about after a while.

Decent. I think I need to go back and give it another listen at some point as it wasn't super memorable.

This album is good, but not great. Just a solid example of the genre and not doing much more beyond that. Favorites were Do It Clean, Villiers Terrace, and Happy Death Men.

not bad, feels a bit dated

Best wel leuk

My second Echo & the Bunnymen album, and Crocodiles has more depth than Ocean Rain did. Crocodiles is pure new wave, and quite fun new wave at that. I enjoyed the lyrics and the bouncy beats. I heard some similarities between Crocodiles and the Replacements' Let It Be, which came out in 1984. Both are post punk, though I suppose Echo & the Bunnymen weren't quite as unusual as the Replacements.

This appears to be a less known album from Echo and the Bunnymen. A couple of the songs (namely, "Do It Clean" and "Rescue") seem to sound more like their most popular stuff, and happen to have the most plays. Everything else is a bit different than what this band was known for, but ultimately still in that same new wave vein. It didn't really wow me or win me over in any significant way, but I baseline enjoyed their sound here!

Average 2,50

I like Rescue; I almost like Do It Clean

So I do quite enjoy Echo and the Bunnymen. I like their almost goth rock post punk style of music. Crocodiles isn't an exception to my enjoyment of Echo and the Bunnymen but, at the same time, I feel like it could have been more interesting. It feels like something is missing. They are clearly talented and the album feels well made, but I just feel like this is alright to put on in the background.

I am indifferent on the 80s Cure-esque post-punk sound, but there are still some cool tracks on here.

British pop rock. Pretty good, a little off the beaten path but enjoyable.

I bought this years ago based on a 5-star RS article. I've never quite understood the excitement critics have had for this album. It's decent. Some of the songs, like "Do it Clean," are more than decent. But it all kind of sounds the same after a few tunes.

I like this band more the older I get. But this album falls a little flat. I guess they were still finding their voice and their production mojo.

That was a blast from the past.

Not my favorite, but its decent.

Less doomer psychedelic rock compared to their other album and a lot more post-punk. I agree that their album's a bit like The Cure. I don't think Echo And The Bunnymen are exceptional at the genre though. There's a hell lot of repetition, and the band still sounds miserable.

A bit by-the-numbers for this genre and era. Good, but not as good as they'd go on to make. 3.5/5

Post-punk took so many interesting directions, especially in the late 70's / early 80's in Britain. The album at first didn't sound special, but as the variety in styles widened, the tapestry began to weave together showing how this album was both influenced and influential. 3.5/5

This album is okay but kind of boring after a couple of songs. 3 stars or C- for me.

I’ve noticed a pattern throughout this list. If an artist or band only has one album included, more often than not the album that was chosen is one of their least popular ones. I’m not sure why this is, but it definitely makes for some less enjoyable listening experiences. Such is the case today. Echo & the Bunnymen don’t seem like the world’s most well known group. But still, their debut Crocodiles is not a well received as what would follow it. But I still tried to approach with optimism. What I’ll say is that this represents the idea of “good, not great” perfectly. There is nothing wrong with this band as far as I can tell. And there are no glaring or frustrating issues that made listening to this record a challenge. It is some pretty straight forward early 80s post-punk. Much like what I’ve heard in the past. But that might be the issue itself. Its simplicity and utter lack of anything really unique left me looking for more. It’s not music I actively dislike. But it’s also not music that actively engages me. I can appreciate the sound though. I’ll always enjoy guitars that are absolutely dripping in chorus. Super floaty, like they are underwater. And there are some cool guitar parts on some tracks. But they are strangely very brief usually. Other than that, everything about this record feels like a carbon copy of what similar artists were doing at the time. Which again, is not a bad thing. But there seems to be an absence in the amount of enthusiasm and prowess that was put into this. If you really want something of a similar vain, just listen to Seventeen Seconds or Pornography. Rating: 6/10

6.5/10. :) The music is intriguing. However, it somewhat went through one ear, and out the other.

Different and a bit eerie. But not bad.

Stars are stars o Read it in books son perfectos ejemplos) y del Post-Punk de Joy Division, con quienes compartieron tiempo y seguidores, ahí están All that Jazz o Happy death man para demostrarlo.

Surprised me how early the Bunnymen got going - I always thought of them as coming later in the decade. Personally love McCullochs vocals and Sargent's jangly guitar, but feels like they haven't quite hit their stride on this one. It's good, but probably wouldn't include it here.

After Punk Rock faded away, pop / rock music went in many directions. The post-punk / indie direction that Echo and The Bunnymen took music is such a startling sound for 1980. You can clearly hear the influence on The Smiths, U2, The Clash here. 3.5/5

Pretty good in places, 3.5*

Not as heavy/stark as Siouxsie, not as light as the Cure. A solid gothy album as a whole piece, but not many standout tracks. I like their later work more tbh

It felt like it should be an important album.....but it wasn't. It was fine.

I went in expecting quite a bit more out of an E and the B-Men album. 3/5

Never really got into the Bunnymen’s more acclaimed work and this debut didn’t change my mind. It’s decent enough moody new wave but just very homogenous and forgettable

🎧This is fine. Nothing in particular grabbed me (there’s no The Killing Moon or Bring on the Dancing Horses-level hits) but it made for a pleasant, if brooding listen. Final night of the DNC in Chicago tonight, Kamala Harris will accept the party’s nomination for pres. P!nk to perform (🤢). Rumors of Beyoncé showing up. And so it goes…

I've always struggled with Echo & The Bunnymen. For me, they never had that standout sound in the huge wave of post-punk and jangle pop of the early 80s. That's not to say the music is bad or anything - songs like 'Crocodiles' and 'Monkeys' on this album are genuinely great and I love those light nocturnal keys on 'Villiers Terrace' that sound almost Doors-esque. It's just that it feels like they're playing straight post-punk, without trying to formulate any sort of unique sound or experiment in any way. But then again, it's a debut so maybe I'm being too harsh - I haven't revisited their later albums in a while (though I remember having similar issues with those). The last thing I'd want to do is dismiss an entire band without having fully dived into their works.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnVkRvOQY-8 (there's better postpunk and echo and the bunnymen got better later on anyway)

Pre-Emo Alternative Rock, with traces of New Wave. I didn't hate this album. I can even recognize the musicianship and how they likely influenced other bands that I actually know and like. However, I just had never purposefully listened to anything by Echo & the Bunnymen ever in my life (and probably never will ever again).

80's synthpop. Nothing of note.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Previous to this I was only really familiar with The Killing Moon. This was not quite what I was expecting...I hear some Gang of Four amongst other things in hear. Enjoyable but not really memorable.

Rockig, ganz gut zu hören. Hat mich aber nicht vom Hocker gerissen. 3/5

Garage Rock from 1980.

Liked it well enough, but doesn't stand out as great for me. Will I listen to again: 30%

Some raw, post punk music here reminiscent of Joy Division, all in all not too shabby

i enjoyed this more than the other new wave albums i’ve listened to, so i guess that’s something. nothing really stood out to me though

Good, driving beat, but annoying repetition of simplistic lyrics. Forgettable.

Not bad, musically sounded a bit like early U2.

Cool band, great new wave sound. But I couldn't fully invest. Kept making me think of other bands and I got lost in the flow.

Decent post punk. There’s a bit of the punk aesthetic with some foreshadowing of what the eighties new wave brought us, without being poppy. Almost has a Talking Heads sort of vibe at some points. Almost. I’d heard of the Bunnymen since I can remember, but never listened to them. I appreciate that this endeavor has me actually listening to bands and albums that I hadn’t gotten around to. Sometimes it’s a win, but usually not. I guess I’ll call this a win.

Moments of brilliance, moments of boredom. It ticks boxes for music I should like, but at times feels like it drags forever. 3.5.

Not bad

This one will need a second listen. I learned of the Bunnymen only in the late 80's. It was interesting hearing this early release from them. Well produced but just a bit more raw and unpolished.

2.5, not bad but I won’t come back to it

Kind of cool - I liked it more than porcupines or whatever. This one was much more atmospheric and groovy - I got into that beloved “flow” state a couple times where I just grooved along. That being said, not a single song actually stood out and rather blended together.

Despite thin production, this album was OK. Music had some good qualities to it. Definitely influential. Not totally my thing but it was listenable.

This was a chill album. It's very 80s which is impressive seeing as how it was made in exactly 1980. It's a good vibe all the way through. I listened twice.

Every other week I'm surprised by another most average album in the history of music. This time, it's Crocodiles. I have nothing else to say about this record.

Started with I quite like this vibe, then firmly got stuck of its time. Probably would have liked it more at the time. Meh!

Its a product of its time. Viliers Trerrace and Rescue show signs but its not up there with Ocean Rain. Still, it showed The Beatles were not the only ones who could create a sound of Liverpool. Great stuff all in all.

Nice enough

It’s fine. This is at least the third album by this artist on this list. I don’t get it.

Another good but not great 80's album.

# 262 : They've done a pretty decent job. Better then I thought it would be. Some of the songs are OK, Favourite track : Do It Clean

Forgettable.

Not bad, not great.

Another brick in the road towards me becoming a new-wave guy. This one is I guess a bit more post-punk than gothy new-wave like the rest I’ve liked, but it’s still got that flavour. Probably a 3.5 but rounding down because there have been peers of these guys that I’ve liked a bit more. Could be convinced to round up after more listens, I bet.

80s pop punk. More punk. It’s all right.
