I'm a hater 2/5
The opening track legit felt like I was getting "the talk" from dad, interesting start to the album. The entire album felt like a Leave it to Beaver episode. This isn't nostalgic for me, this is so old you can hear the inspiration for the bands that inspired the bands that I listened to. Not for me, antiquated and uninteresting.
good but like when would i ever listen to this? kinda creepy
Love the vocal harmonies and the overall vibe. It's really short though. Favorite track: Made to Love

It’s not aged well at all but they do have a great sound together Just had no desire to listen to an albums worth of their songs, even one this short
What a deeply uncomfortable album title. Rock and roll albums were so boring musically, thank goodness we had Black music to phase this era out
Whatever
A fine listen, but pretty repetitive and stereotypical early 60s poppy rock music.
The lyrics for sure don't hold up anymore, and the music is fine. I've always enjoyed Cathy's Clown and didn't know that the Nazereth song Love Hurts was actually a cover of the Everly Brothers.

I can see that it's influential, but listening back it doesn't feel essential at all. You can listen to a song or two, understand the influence it had on The Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. and then move on to when the music got better. 2/5.
Im sure it was great in the 50s, but I can't get into it.
Fairly harmless, not that exciting
Good pop harmonies, and I guess even the acoustic guitar combined with other rock instruments was quite influential back in the day. Also, though I get it was 1960, I'm glad for the album experience in general that song endings have come a long way from "just fade out and call it a day". I can't really say I enjoyed any of the songs by modern standards, or even with a retrospective into what their contemporaries were already creating. The lyrics are your generic pop band trash (this transcends decades), and this duo were in the charts in place of monumental artists like Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, and Dave Brubeck. There's an electric guitar in that studio but it's barely being used. The most dynamic song on the album might be "Lucille", which is a cover along with "Baby What You Want Me To Do". It seems their writer/producer asked the duo to sing some blues hits but they met the ceiling of their vocal and artistic range — far away beneath the originals. Listen to Jimmy Reed hit the soul and groove of that track in the same year, through the vocals and guitar, then give credit for the influence his work had on every musician who followed. I'm shocked to discover none of his albums, not even "I'm Jimmy Reed", found a place in the 1001 albums... yet it's got room for watered down pop and a lot of other random junk. 2.5/5
Generic rock and roll with really dated lyrics, it’s fun at times and some of the songs were quite good but for the most part it’s boring and a bit repetitive despite its short length, it’s got too many slow, dreamy lover songs rather than the fun rock and roll ones which they are actually good at. Although I can see how it might be influential for groups like the beach boys (with the vocal harmonies) and the beatles so there’s that. Favourites: Donna, Donna and Cathy’s clown. Overall, 4/10.
Before I even listen to this I know it’s gonna be twee pop mostly about girls. The sort of album that Andy Dufresne would have been given for his Shawshank library. I’m not saying getting away from this album is the reason he decided to crawl through half a mile of shit but who knows. Baby What You Want Me To Do is a decent blues track in fairness.
Short. Not awful. That’s about it.
First or second wave ska? Where’s Ghost Town?
2/5
I'll take "Music That Hasn't Aged Well" for $500, Ken.
Thanking the 1001 Algo for today's exercise in musical education being a mere 27 minutes at least. Another band which my Mum grew up hearing at home; I'm familiar with a few of these tracks through her playing them over the years, and the album was a pleasant enough listen. Ultimately it's just not really my thing though, despite understanding, to a degree, why it's on here.
I saw these at the Ajax stadium as support for Simon & Garfunkel. They played a selection of their greatest hits, none of which appear to be on this album! Dated and underwhelming if I’m honest.
Dated vanilla.
This has a nice oldies vibe but it didn’t really stick with me. I did not like the lyrics of the first song. I didn’t know Love Hurts was originally by them.
This was fine. I just think there was much better music coming out in 1960 than this. Elvis is way better than this. Buddy Holly is way better than this. This was fine. The songs I recognized, were ok... but there are way better versions of them done by other artists, like Love Hurts. The songs I didn't recognize didn't stick with me. I really don't understand why the final song on this album has such a massive stream count. According to Spotify, Cathy's clown is there top song and it doesn't stick with me at all. I can feel the influence of this record on other artists. I definitely think Ray Orbison ripped off Lucille for Pretty Woman. I know these brothers were a big deal at the time... they just don't do much for me now. Anddd this album doesn't even have their best song on it, All I have to do is dream. Now that's a great song. If it was on here, it woulda brought my score up. Anyways, this gets a 2.
Had a lovely classic sound and cadence, was fun.
Background music
I won't be able to listen to this. My father loved The Everly Brothers and it's just too painful even though it isn't very good.
so why does every song end early with a fadeout????
This does sound very dated. It isn't the worst thing I've heard, but I have a hard time even putting it in the context of the time it was made. I'll give it 2/5.
Kinda boring. Feels like the One Direction of its time.
Я уважаю и слышу винтажный звук 50-ых, но люблю ли я его в данном случае?
It's Mel's diner music, not really for me
такой стерильной музыки я кажется еще не слышала (ну не считая советских артистов). а еще вот эти фэйды после припевов практически взбесили уже.. ну короче немного прикольно, но неинтересно и скучнооо
What a surprise to find 'Love Hurts' here. The rest sounded ok, but so very much outdated in a way that the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys don't sound old like this.
Really not a classic
if i just ignore the lyrics its alright i got tired of their voices (harmony) its too plain for me idk
Girls were made to be loved?????? Yo that's problematic The absolute state of the West. It's literally the best song on the album ?>.<?
Not for me
- Goeie kerstmuziek - 0 nummer toegevoegd aan de MMMM
It just seems like in the late ‘50s the ideal thing for an adult to want to be like was a little white child who has a lot of sex.
Proof that the sixties didn't start in 1960. This isn't _bad_ and I didn't hate it, but it's decidedly not my kind of thing.
★★½
Too much harmony. Where IS the rock and the roll??
Fun, twas alright, nothing particularly special.
Is a total running time with less then half an hour already an album? And even the original version of the well-known "Love Hurts" does not convince me at all. Over all just 60's sound. 2,5
Just bland and boring and formulaic. I'm glad music quickly progressed on from this stage of songwriting and really makes me appreciate someone like my homie Bob Dylan. 3/10
Reminds me of working in the aged care home (positive). Look, I totally understand the importance of this era of music and some of the songs are obviously still sweet and singable, plus the more 12-bar-bluesy stuff is cooler, but overall it’s too whiny and patheticky for my taste (negative). And puts me to sleep.
This era of music sounds so generic to me that the album had almost entirely replayed before I realized.
Did not realize a date with the Everly brothers was a threat until the first song. I mean one of the Nick Cave albums had a song that was explicitly about sexual assault but at least he didn’t present it was love life advice. The rest of it was pretty whiny, which is a weird thing for me to say as an elder emo!
teen heartthrob music for an era that feels so wildly distant. real goofus and gallant vibe. kind of cloyingly saccharine, but more cringe than bad. 2.5
What did they do to Lucille!?!
Bit of an awkward date, what with both brothers being dead. But overall, this is a gentle, tender, inoffensive, unremarkable album.
"Love hurts" is a song that even I recognize. The rest is a lot of folk, rock, country. Not really my thing.
Classic 50s/early 60s cover art in Kodachrome or Colorvision or Technicolor. Young bucks discovered a kind of harmony that just hit different. Made the girls swoon, made the guys jealous, and is cited by countless next generation of Rock including, among many others, The Beatles. This is a 27-minute album, so no skips. Highlights: Always It's You, TIL that Love Hurts by Nazareth is a cover of an Everly Brothers song, of course Cathy's Clown was a defining song for them, and Lucille is great. Game changing sound in simpler times.
Gee, Betty, I sure hope you'll be my date to the sock hop on Saturday! Hearing this it's suddenly clear why rock and roll and the Beatles were such a revelation. It's hard to believe this was recorded as late as 1960.
Average 60’s pop
Unfortunately very dated, if you like that.
i cant believe i went on a date with the evenly brothers
Very standard 60's pop in positive news it is short.
2.5 or something. nothing special.
I can hear how this might've been popular and even influential back in the early 60s, but unfortunately, this did little to dispel my notion that early 60s music was mostly just waiting out the gap between the Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll and Beatlemania. Nothing particularly caught my ear about it, and at just 27 minutes it still sounded like it was wearing out its welcome. Sorry Everly Brothers, I think we should just be friends.
47/100. Feels like a fairly generic release. While a few tracks come off as sweet and charming. It doesn’t push any boundaries and sounds very similar to many records from the same era. Overall, it made for a pretty dull listen.
Ok 2/5
I have a soft spot for oldies, but god this shit is grating.
60-tals tonårspop. Vit appropriering av svart blues och r 'n' b. Inte brödernas bästa album.
The music isn't terrible, and the harmonies are kind of nice, but this album is terribly dated. I guess it is possibly to be sappy and misogynistic at the same time. It's short at least, and it feels like every song cuts off early. I guess I can hear some of what influenced music later in the 60s here. It doesn't keep this from being boring, though.
Some good songs, i think the second side was better
2.5
Feels harsh to say but so boring. 2.3/5
Sounds exactly how it looks.
Listens: 2 Standout tracks: None Yea no. Sorry, not interested. Not even remotely. Its not a 1; I don't hate it, its not offensive, but I definitely do not want to listen to it every again.
Kuulostaa juuri siltä, että on julkaistu vuonna 1960. Ei omaan makuun toimi lainkaan.
MEH!
Great harmonies obviously but this felt like a surprisingly long 28 minutes.
Half an hour is perfect for this. 50s/60s pop rock before anyone got cool. There’s nothing wrong with it, and it shows that there’s always been sort of bland but pleasant radio fodder, but I wouldn’t have it on the list.
These nerds. Not good, I assume this is a Buddy Holly rip off and not the other way around?
I think I will turn down a date with the Everly Brothers. Dated, country, and painful to listen to. Rating: 2
Great harmonies. Not sure lyrics stand the test of time
Yawn - so glad I was not around when these songs were THE TOPS of the day. Cute and warm.
Hard to not feel the sexism throughout after the opening track, feels weird man
Just whatever. Not very interesting.
Sweet young lads i suppose. This is the time period where if the song was not about love or a woman (usually both) it did not get recorded. Bit too lovey-dovey and mating songs kind of vibe for me. These are the kind of songs that teenagers and young adults of that time would play at every single event where two genders of that time would meet in hopes of trying to get laid. Decent singing voices i guess. Does not hit too many strings with me. Maybe im too young for this kind of whatever this is.
Kind of a one-trick pony, really grates on you after a few songs.
Apparently an influential group...glad this genre of music died.
Look, it's good at what it is, but it really ain't my thing. Musically fun, but the lyrics are so incessantly inane.
Had a pretty good time with this but that may just be because I watched Wild at Heart recently
this isn’t what i expected - I half expected more frank sinatra, and this is more if the early beatles were american. So it’s not great per se but it’s also not awful. some of the guitar solos on this are so boring it’s hilarious - the same 2 notes played about 20 times. I think literally every song ends by fading out which is hilarious.
They're not getting a second date, that's for sure
Ovo nikako nije moja šolja čaja
I want to hear the modern versions of these same songs. Like what is the 2025 version of "Donna, Donna" where someone is singing about a tease and him being pissed even though it's really just entitlement. There's such an old sound to these guys considering how much music changed over the next 10 years. Good sound but of its time.
I get why this is here. It's a fine album, with some fine compositions and a fine example of early1960s music. I would rather listen to Sam Cooke, or Elvis or Roy Orbison.
Not a bad oldie album. Some songs I had heard before thanks to my parents playing stuff from this era. Didn't know Love Hurts was originally by them. But I still like Nazareths cover better. Joan Jett has a good cover of it too.
Defenetly not the killer level.
2.5
Early 60s pop is very.. ugh. Schmaltzy. Not my jam. Thankfully a very short album.
Very outdated bubble gum pop from the early 60s. Thank goodness the Beatles came along and changed the trajectory of American pop.
Just go listen to La Luz
Listening to music like this and it being called "rock and roll" is pretty funny to me these days, knowing what has come of this genre with time. As I listen to this, I keep thinking to myself - this is is a bit too sappy. I wonder what it must have felt like listening to this when it was contemporary. Did it blow people's heads off? Love Hurts was pretty interesting though, was fun realising what it is I am listening to, having gotten used to another rock band's apparent cover of it (I never knew it wasn't an original!)
Not too bad, didn't listen to the whole thing yet, Cathy's clown elliott smith reference?
This has dated so badly in so many ways. Was this really important (or good)? 2.5
I wasn’t big on this one.
Meh
A date with the Everly Brothers doesn't sound very fun. It's the same shit over, and over with a few high points every now, and then. Favorite Song: "Baby What You Want Me To Do".
I think this record has dated rather a lot - it is likely to have been pretty influential. The Everly brothers seem to have been up there with the movers and shakers of the late 50s music world. It's an album that in its lyrical content brings out the broader sophistication of rock and pop music after the mid-60s. Not an album I'm likely to play in the future.
Sounds like a band trying really hard to make the best of constraints put on it: terrible vocals stuck in an extremely square sense of time. The thing it reminds me of most is the AI slop you see on YouTube, "X in the style of Y". It doesn't have the human touch. There's something not quite right about it. (the thing that's not quite right is that it sucks) Worse backing band and this would be a 1 star music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Boy thank god pop music took another turn after this eh? Imagine this is still what we were listening to.
I like the one song
2.0
Lol! Im sure If I was born in the 30/40s this would be romantic and id love it :)
Zzzzzzzz
This is #day143 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it's been a while since I messed up the numbers. It was supposed to be #day142 yesterday, and I wrote 143 in my review. Anyway. Unlike most of the rock and roll releases I've heard on the list, this one has some fine tunes. But this isn't the record I'll revisit soon, if ever. There's Love Hurts, which I didn't remember, was first recorded by The Everly Brothers... Anyway, this is a 2 out of 5, not a 3. Looking forward to #day 144, and I do mean 144 now.
Mercifully short...Nazareth or Roy or Joan or really anyone's cover of Love Hurts is superior...
Is this album just here for Love Hurts? I'm betting this is one of the albums that got cut in later editions.
So whiny. But hey, thanks for inspiring the Beatles!
Brief Interviews with Hideous Men
Never heard this before. I can see how this might have worked as an introduction to a broader range of musical styles to suburban America while keeping it palatable by having clean-cut white boys performing. But looking at it now, there's nothing palatable about it. Any emotion or energy in the underling music is diluted through the production and results in an unlistenable album for me. For example, comparing it to Please Please Me (which came out 3 years later and bears surface similarities), there is so much more energy and inventiveness to the music. I'm also surprised at how often the harmonies seem to be off and how often they seem to slip in and out of tune. There are some exceptions (Always It's You, Cathy's Clown), but having only paid attention to the Everlys from afar, I thought their quality pipes and harmonies would be rock solid. It's interesting to hear the first recorded version of Love Hurts. Even considering it as a historical document, I can't give this album more than 2 stars.
Boring.
This is the G-rated, Disney music of the 50's. I know: the album came out in 1960, but I would classify it as the springboard for much of the changes that better represent the 60's: launching the Beatles, the punk rock movement, and the general shift of music to more "life" and less an idealized aesthetic. I'm glad this is on the list, as it is a good representation of that base point from which a lot of styles were carved out over the subsequent three or four decades. Like a G-rated Disney movie, it's cute, inoffensive, but feels a little light and sweet. In other words, it's fine, but not something I'll listen to much, so it's a 2.8.
Too syrupy sweet for my tastes.
Outdated and unoriginal. The covers are better.
Inoffensive, but outdated and bland.
Okay
Phil & Don. Really early for me, FIRST grade. Early Rock- n- Roll
Really nothing to say here. Didn't enjoy it at all and I won't listen ever listen or think about it again. But it wasn't the bottom of the barrel of albums on here, so it has that going for it at least.
Meh. Cheesy and dull. Not for me.
If you ever got into a fight with one of the Everly Brothers, they'd roll up their sleeves, buckle their pants, and say "No more Mr. Nice Guy! Lemme at him, lemme at him!", while the other one holds them back, as steam comes out of their ears. These white boys lack the sauce.
not going back for a 2nd date
Meh, just kinda 50s-60s nothingness
If I was in my 80s I'm sure this would slap, but I'm not, so it doesn't.
I like the Everly Brothers sound, and this has some good songs on it. Overall the album is just ok as this is does have some songs that are a little forgettable as well.
Just a collection of songs
Bruh
That classic garbage radio safe pop
This album and its lyrics and themes have dated quite badly. It made for a rather distracted listening experience
That didn’t age well.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla
The best part about this album is that it was only 27 minutes.
Country, Blues and Jazz had a lot more interesting stuff going on in 1960, even though the seeds of something big are sown in albums like this, it's like the throat clearing before rock really got started. It's influential and important and all that, but 64 years later it's just so familiar (even never hearing this album before) that it makes very little impression. There's blues rhythms and country twang and pop harmonies and it all sounds good, but it's basically bubblegum that's been polished by hindsight.
..
My wife walked in and asked why I was having a high school sockhop in 1959. Some nice harmonies but let's be honest, I'm never consciously listening to this again.
Dated
not my vibe but not bad
Did they have somewhere to be when recording this? Baffling that a 12 song album is just short of 28 minutes long. Reminds me of The Beach Boys. These guys really loved getting bitches didn't they? Not really bad just very boring and repetitive. I don't have much to say about this one unfortunately due to the duration and simplicity of a lot of it. Highlights Love Hurts: ***1/2 Lucille: *** A Change of Heart:***
Love hurts, Lucille and Cathy's Clown stood out a bit better than the others. Rest of the album was pretty dull and a chore to get through. Donna, Donna ends very awkwardly, like the fadeout didn't work properly. Maybe this is an issue with the remaster idk. I'm sure they were rock and roll trailblazers but it hasn't aged as well as acts and albums that would come out only a few years later. At least 'A Date R@pe With The Everly Brothers' was only 27 minutes long
Look if I had to pick an album that covered that 50s safe music, the kind where you would go to the dance with your mom from the past or whatever happened in back to the future. Anyway just kinda mid, might have gone hard at the time but given this came out in 1960, better music was on the way in anyway so would have sounded old by then too. 2/5.
Painfully mediocre. This shit probably went crazy at the milk bar in 1960 but it’s just shallow, competently performed music. Very glad this was only 27 minutes long. Love Hurts is the standout and Nazareths cover is way better than this. If this album came out today and I had to hear it all the time I would pray to be drafted into Vietnam. I would much rather have listened to anything by the Beach Boys than an album that was clearly put on here because one of its songs became bigger when covered by another band. Not entirely unlistenable but extremely boring.
Bien
This must be the whitest album ever made.
She's cute but doesn't have a lot goin for her
It’s not bad, but it doesn’t seem like anything special, either.
A bit boring indeed
Bit boring innit?
Congrats to Randy Newman for taking whatever these dudes are doing and finding a way to make it memorable. Favourite track: That's Just Too Much.
Serviceable if not unremarkable. Not bad, just nothing special High 2
i said in the group chat it was a 5/10 put i really thought about it y esta madre es un 4/10. Es escuchable al menos.
These charming crooners managed to cram 12 songs into 27 minutes. Some of the songs were catchy but most just seemed corny.
Ok, but pretty vanilla and boring, with a little hint of 60s charm. Cover art looks like they don't have 2 cents to rub together - cheap.
Yup, that's early 60's music alright. Half the songs just abruptly faded out
Early 60’s crooners
Like the Beach Boys, its creepy thirstiness and patriarchal adherence hasnt aged well
This has to be one of the most poorly aged albums on the list. Lyricism so bland it made me completely zone out. There was some actually interesting instrumentation on Sigh, Cry, Almost Die, and Love Hurts was pretty well written, but the rest was just bad. I think the general style of this one is good, instrumentation was alright throughout, so I'll give it some credit for that. Favorites were Always it's You and Love Hurts.
This one really has that classic feel. I just didn’t like it like some of the others I’ve listened to from this era. Also the cover of Lucille takes absolutely all the sauce out of the song.
Good. But I like other albums better
Feels quite reminiscent of early Beatles and Beach Boys, and it's a fun romp musically - about as 60s as you can get - but lyrically it's quite outdated. The album represents the 'good old days' the MAGA movement opines for, and I wouldn't call that a good thing..
Not really my fave
Pleasant enough, but man, a lot was about to happen in the 60s...
50s style "get back in the kitchen" white boy blues
A quick listen. It's good for what it is but so half-baked. Nothing really feels special except as an artifact of what music used to be.
Meh
I guess this is alright? Hard not to lump a lot of these early 60s bands together. Is this really that different from Buddy Holly or really early Beatles? Not sure.
Not my fave but it’s ok
Not bad, but kinda painfully 60s sounding
Boah, die Texte... Aber jetzt ahne ich, wer die Beatles bei ihrem mehrstimmigen, harmonischen Gesang in ihrer Please Please Me Phase beeinflusst hat. Dafür nen Extrapunkt.
1. made to love - 1.5 2. too much - 1.5 3. baby - 1 4. to do - 1 5. almozt die - 1.5 6. itz you - 1 7. love hurtz - 1 8. lucille - 1 9. houu come - 1.5 10. donna - 1 11. heart - 1.5 12. clouun - 0
To Sweet for my taste, but surley seminal
Not a very good date
Not for me.
Können gute Laune. Historisch vielleicht interessant aber heute!?
I dunno about this one man. If not for my mom and her love of these guys, I might ask to speak to the manager about this decision.
Solid old stuff. Makes you wonder what the world of music was really like in 1960!? Must’ve been pretty bland overall
- entspanntes, sehr kurzweiliges Album - allerdings nichts, was ich groß wieder hören würde
The lyrics make me think this dude is a creep but it was ok I guess
It was 'nice'. Very old-fashioned and a bit dull. I'll take the Nazareth version of Love Hurts as well please.
Does not hold up at all, both musically and <super cringe> lyrically. Trying to weigh in my head the obvious fame and influence these guys had...I suppose it's the vocal harmonies - yeah, definitely the harmonies, there's your influence. I'm not much of a vocal listener but that's pretty impressive and I can definitely see how that would have carried thru into the next decade and influencing pop/rock acts. Music overall is simplistic - probably to be expected given how old it is, and I'm sure I'd have felt totally differently had I been alive at the time, but for now it's just an influence/historical document that I don't get much out of listening to. Thankfully it was over quickly. 4/10 2 stars.
Como assim, Love Hurts da Nazareth é uma versão da composição deles?
Not even sure what to say about this really. It's super dated. Absolutely nothing about it is relevant. Cathy's Clown is the only breakaway from the syrupy sweet pop, but barely. Bonus point for being referenced by Elliott Smith.
Perfectly listenable Habe seitdem keine sekunde daran gedacht
This is one of those albums that makes me shake my head and wonder how it made the list. First of all, it barely has a pulse. Second of all, its claim to fame is that it made it all the way to number 9 on Billboard's charts. Wow.....that's impressive.
Sounds clean, but album was putting me to sleep. I'm sure this was iconic in its time, but not sure now. 2*
Old school dreamy rock Beachy romantic summer Sounds like times gone past
I don't want to hear Boomers complain about how vapid modern music is ever again.
I’m sure a set of elderly brothers are out there listening to the Everly Brothers fondly, but for anyone not in their 80s, this one just doesn’t connect too well. That’s harsh, I just wanted a reason to say “elderly,” but this album is an easy breeze that, given the right mood, I wouldn’t mind popping on once in a blue moon. Man, women were just so much easier when they were made to love, huh?
Might once be nice and sweet and appealing, but is really too outdated now
This album just feels a bit insubstantial to me. That said, "Love Hurts" is a pretty good song. The rest isn't bad, but it doesn't speak to me.
Eh
Can't take the Helium voices.
The whole album is super short and there are 3+ songs about chasing girls. I wish I lived in the "fuck around" century and not the "find out" century.
I'm probably too young to enjoy this album
Amazing album! If you are 80 years old, of course, and this was the only record you ever owned when you were young. Otherwise, it's just a piece of history, to look cool in the museum of music, saying "look, this is how music sounded in 1960s! Funny, eh?". Yep, funny.
If I could give it less than 1 star I would.
If I were a swooning teen in the 60s this probably would have meant more to me. Love hurts is familiar, but rest is a little too old
Have heard one of these on the Raising Sand album. Was ok.
23/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 I had so much fun reading reviews for this. People were really upset by the lyrics. I mean, yeah, they have not stood the test of time at all, but they were written by guys who are now dead. I find it hard to get upset about it. Maybe it's because I'm old. Not old enough to have been alive in 1960 when this cookie-cutter album came out. My problem with it isn't really lyrics, because I mostly ignore lyrics anyway. My problem is how generic this was. It gets "saved" a little bit by the fact that it had some guitar licks that, while also generic, sounded nicer than what one usually hears in pop. Also, hey.. that was the original Love Hurts? It was weird to know the lyrics to one of their songs, but I guess that's Nazareth's fault. I don't know if one needs to hear Nazareth's version before they die, but I know for a fact that they absolutely don't need to hear this version.
I used to love listening to the golden oldies, my Oma always had them floating up out of the small white Casio she kept in the kitchen, running all day long while she cooked, baked, and cleaned. And The Everly Brothers were a regular fixture on the AM oldies station. Maybe I've gotten too cynical as I've grown up, or maybe I'm too woke now to listen to these songs and take them at face value. Songs I gave little to no consideration now sound steeped in misogyny and sexism. Girls were made to love, subtext, they were made to be objects of physical pleasure for men and dominated then discarded when no longer "pleasing". Love is a waste on you, subtext, I got the milk for free and now I'll not be buying this cow. Gross. Love Hurts might be the only decently written song because it doesn't expound an expressly male or female viewpoint. This is a tough one to rate. The music is pleasing, and harkens back to a different time, there's a lot of nostalgia rolled up into this music for me. But the whiney "nice guy" lyrics have overshadowed all of that for me. Maybe without ever knowing it, this is why I've always preferred the Beach Boys.
Rather boring
Wow is this dated. The origin of "love hurts" though.
Dull and boring
I remember my mom playing Cathy's Clown for me a kid but I wouldn't opt to listen to this on my own.
It’s a fine example of effortless mid-century American harmonies that makes me wonder if the Everly Brothers spoke in tonic descension with one another. Cathy’s Clown is the highlight for me, but forgive me - this album makes me think of all of the black and Latino music of the time getting zero airplay.
Ok, a bit to dated in how they approach love songs, some if it is creepy and stalkery now.
Was this that influential to include on this list? I can't say for certain, but to me it's just teenage hearththrob music that doesn't make sense for inclusion.
Dated but I can see why it was popular at the time.
These brothers are too old for me to go out on a date with. Will I listen to again: 0%
Exactly what you’d expect from 60s rock and roll
Best Song: Love Hurts. It's a great song, but this still manages to be one of the worst renditions I've heard. Worst Song: Sigh, Cry, Almost Die. Whiny lyrics paired with a nasal delivery. Lovely. Overall: Antiquated and boring. Societally, I think we've aged out of this kind of stuff. Music for funeral homes.
Too much of this sound is so dragging. Its like they had a homework assignment to write music turn in in and tour off it. No passion or attitude in it at all.
You ever listen to something and it just sounds like it needs the dust knocked off of it? That is certainly this record. A relic of a bygone (and thankfully over) era. The brothers sound fine but lyrically it just isn’t doing it for me or frankly anyone. Bleh 🤷🏻♂️
2.5 really
The guitar on this album is way ahead of it’s time. This was a one and done album for me though.
I'm a little surprised by the overwhelming negativity of the other reviews. Sure - dated, but mercifully short and each track is quite distinct. Love Hurts is great. I might be the target market - white bloke, mind of a 60-year-old.
"A Date with The Everly Brothers" by The Everly Brothers may indeed come across as a bit of a "snoozefest" for listeners seeking more energetic and contemporary sounds. Released in 1960, this album is a reflection of the musical landscape of its time, characterized by gentle harmonies and ballad-driven melodies. Tracks like "Cathy's Clown" and "Walk Right Back" are emblematic of The Everly Brothers' signature close harmonies and soft, romantic lyrics. The album's production is classic for its era, with acoustic guitars and sweet vocal interplay. However, it's essential to recognize that this album is a product of a specific time in music history. While it holds nostalgic value for those who appreciate the early days of rock and pop, it may not hold the same appeal for contemporary listeners accustomed to more dynamic and diverse sounds. Thus, for those who find it less engaging, a 2/5 rating may be warranted.
Boy oh boy are love songs creepy in the 50s. "Made to Love" got me off on a real bad foot. Interesting to hear, I guess.
okay, probably instrumental for the era.
Doesn’t offend
Not particularly interesting.
Kind of enjoyed the first track and then snooze
Sounds old, classical, and forgettable.
I fell asleep.
Maybe the most boring album I've come across on this list so far. I'll give it a two, because the singing is great, but nothing else of interest here. Not to mention the lyrics, which are almost entirely about outdated gender roles. Buddy Holly is a much more interesting artist from the same time period.
A very generic oldies pop sounding album. This came out in 60 which I feel was the tail end of this kind of pop music. It wasn’t bad but overall it’s just really dated. There are a few songs I’d revisit but overall it’s a product of its time and doesn’t hold up too well. 5.5/10
😴
pretty resident sleeper. these guys were just tryna get laid in 1960 so they made this album. no original sounding songs.
Snooze fest
Do not enjoy
The album starts off promising enough with a couple good songs, but never builds on that. I don't want to say any of them were bad, but they certainly didn't excite me. The Everly Brothers are a fairly influential group with some pretty popular songs, but never really big albums. That wasn't their focus, or any group's focus at the time. Given that, it gets boring pretty quick and, since the entire project is only 28 minutes long, it doesn't give the album time to redeem itself. Lyrically it's pretty rough, nothing to write home about instrumentally, and the production is simply A OK. The best thing about it, as well as all Everly Brothers projects, are the harmonies. 2/5
Very beach poppy, albeit with very outdated lyrics. It was a fun-ish and short listen.
Nah
classic american sixties
These guys are the original Oasis brothers! I forget the names of those 2 fucktards, but the Everly brothers fought on and off stage. They broke up for many years, got together for one last set of shows. Phil smashed his guitar and walked off stage leaving for brother to finish on his own. I wonder if this is where The Who decided to smash their shit on stage for awhile? I'm sure this was probably good stuff in the 60's, but did not do much for me today. At least the songs were short and to the point. I liked Lucille and Love Hurts. Love Hurts went on to be one of Nazareth's bigger hits off the album Hair of the Dog. And don't sleep on Miss Misery off that same album. Back to the Everly Brothers. They were OK. Oher than being shocked to hear Love Hurts, nothing really stood out and I have no interest in hearing more of their music. I may read into some of their fights though. 2
ANOTHER fourth studio album! I really don't think it's coincidence. The sound is simple, and doesn't really carry the test of time.
Talented lads, but nah.
Very old, very short, very rubbish. Falls between country, early rock and roll, and the balladeer tradition, without being anywhere near as interesting and engaging as any of them.
Ouin ouin love hurts
Charming, simple lyrics, but interesting what they sang about love in the 60s
A Date with the Everly Brothers is the fourth album by American singing duo the Everly Brothers. Released in 1960, this album peaked at 9 on the Billboard Pop albums chart and its song "Love Hurts" has gone on to be a classic song for covers. This nice, mid-century style of pop music album had themes centered around love and more specifically the dating/fling aspect. I enjoyed this album as a lookback through time to listen to the earlier forms of pop music. The musical style and lyrics hold up to this day, but they lack that "oomph" that modern music can generate.
The sound of peanut butter on wax, this is sickly sweet stuff best enjoyed in small doses.
Like Ed Sheran of its day bit whiney. Still CathyS clown was a stonker.
Welcome to 12-bar blues central, the zeitgeist of the late 50s white collar America, where the women are loose and fade-outs are cheap.
Viihdemusiikkia, aivan pätevää sellaista tansseihin jne. Ei jätä muistijälkeä
Ihan pätevä levy. Love Hurtsin alkuperäisversion kuuleminen on hauskaa, ja esim. Jimmy Reed-cover on mukava lisä. Kolmonen kuitenkin vaatisi, että kuulijalla on yhtyeeseen sellainen henkilökohtainen suhde, joka ei sisällä historiallisesta etäisyydestä johtuvaa, epäreilua taipumusta vähän hymähtää ajatukselle "Everly Brothersista".
Some nice harmonies but generally a pretty lacklustre record
A song about how women come in different sizes because they are "made for loving" is an inauspicious start. Gets better from there.
A pleasant listen with the great harmony but in the grand scheme of music, nothing particularly sticks out. And many of the lyrics really didn't age well
It was fine. Gave me generic 60s vibes. Nothing really stood out but it wasn't bad.
Not for me
Las dos estrellas son sólo por Love Hurts
Agh I really like this kind of sound but I just can't get behind the lyrics... I know they were standard at their time and I'm not going to blame the Everly Brothers but it literally starts with "girls girls girls were made to love" and "that's why some of them are 5 foot 2" and "that's why you watch them walk down the street" I mean COME ON jeesus. It's a bit much to swallow so to say ;) Same feeling throughout the rest of the album. It's a kind of music I really enjoy but I can't get past the dodgy words and misogyny.
Well. Well well well. Welly welly welly. The everly bros sounds like winey little sexist piggies. Maybe, young man the reason none of the girls love you is because you keep telling them that girls were made to love. The music is great though, makes me think of the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance in Back to the Future.
I like many artists who were influenced by the Everley Brothers, but this album doesn't do it for me. Their harmonies would have influenced bands like the Beatles but on this album the harmonies start to drive me nuts after the first couple of songs; they don't have the music writing / instrument playing abilities the Fab Four had. All I end up thinking of is the awful albums that resulted from bands being influenced by their harmonies. Remember Bee Gees' Odessa album that 1001 made us endure before we die? There is some cover version association that doesn't do this album any favours. For example, Nazareth's painful and overplayed cover of Love Hurts makes the Everley Brothers' version hard to listen to. Also, EB's cover of Lucille should have been left on the cutting room floor. Their doing this song with two part harmony is sacrilege for Little Richard fans and a waste of one of the only good guitar bits on the album. I like Wake Up Little Susie. If that song was on this album it might have helped my rating.
I remember reading in Keith Richard's biography that around 1964, before the Stones put out their 1st album, they toured with The Everly Brothers and one other band for a summer. The Stones were billed as the number 3 band, but by the end of the summer, they were the headliners. By listening to this album It's easy to see why -Everly Brothers are so squeaky clean and white! The Stones doing their Bo Diddley or Howlin' Wolf covers would have blown them off the stage!
This record really captures the mood and spirit of the 50’s. Whoops this was released in 1960, so you could say it was already getting dated. And boy is it ever an anachronism now. Well although the music isn’t very exciting and the lyrics are pretty lame, I have to admit they had nice voices.
Dated and uninteresting. On the one hand the tracks are so short they feel under developed but on the other that meant I only had to listen to a half hour of this overly saccharine music.
Pablum.
Some situational potential but overall very grating.
Not my style. I find the lyrics in a lot of this kind of music to be pretty inane. While a song here and there is charming, as a cohesive listening experience it's a bit of a samey chore. Fave track: Love Hurts
this is too straight for me chile 😭
Ehkä aika ajanut jo ohi eikä ihan nouse sinne klassikko-materiaaliin. Kerran kuunteli ilman ongelmia ja helppo painaa unholaan.
Great voices and the music isn't bad, but it lacks character. Also women were not made to love that is so misogynistic and anti-based. If either of them asked me on a date, I would vehemently reject them and throw cantelope chunks at their balls.
A date with either of the Everly brothers starts off with some gentle misogyny and ends with some very short but oddly ok pity sex.
eh
BOOOOOOOOORING. We’re on quite a cold streak right now.
It's so dated but science be praised that rock got more interesting than this later in the 60s. This is a typical 50s diner music, which is pleasant in it's own way, but nothing that I would choose to play. Love Hurts is instantly recognizable but mainly from Nazareth's version.
I grew up listening to fair amount of oldies on FM radio, so I know a couple of Everly Brothers songs: 'Wake Up Little Susie' and 'Bye Bye Love' (which is a really solid jam). This was my first time listening to this album, and I don't think I've ever heard any of the songs on it (unless you count Nazareth's version of 'Love Hurts'). I'd say this album is what I would expect for the time: songs about love with simple and catchy instrumentation, topped with a few sprinkles of casual misogyny. But for what it is, I think it's really good. The harmonies are great, and even though the instrumentation certainly isn't lighting the world on fire, it really works well with the lyrics. 'Love Hurts' is probably the best song on the album, and in a way, I'm glad that I had only heard the Nazareth version up until now. Alternative title for this album: Aw, Shucks: White People Problems
notes - classic sugary sweet pop rockabilly from the 60s - guys and gals, love songs - quite cookie cutter sounding to modern ears but the vocals have a quality to them that feels a bit more genuine (but not a ton) - they actually wrote most of their own music which was unusual for the time fav that’s just too much - love the tremolo guitar and chorus melody least fav - sigh cry almost die - seems like the whole song is filling time to get to the part where they say the name pf the song 2.5/5
Can't get past the sickly sweetness of pre 60s white person rock
Meh
Bit of a bore.
Meh
Plain country, not my thing hut aight
Lovely harmonies but dated and flat
The good thing about these early rock and roll records is that there isn’t a song over 3 minutes long on most of them. This record’s even better. Every song gets faded out indiscriminately, regardless of wether the song is actually over. It’s like the engineer went “Ok, we’re at 2 minutes 23 seconds…fade that shit”. As an added bonus, “A Date With…” is only 27 minutes long, which, turns out, is exactly how long I can tolerate pre-1965 rock music. What a coincidence.
I got excited when I saw this album generated, but then I realized I got the Everly Brothers mixed up with the Righteous Brothers, and then my excitement faded.
Humanity has moved on since this album, and we're better for that.
The best thing about this album is that it was only 27 minutes long. Outside of that it was not that good of an album. It still has that 50s sound. Sure there are harmonies but they still annoying. It may have been good to listen to at the regular sock hop, but I do not need to revisit it.
2/5. I wanted to be excited for this after the first song but there was a lot of empty feeling in this album compared to early Beatles and beach boys. Didn’t have the same passion.
Óeftirminnilegt. Fínar raddir en einfaldar útsetningar, hrikalega dated textar. Eiga þeir ekki betri plötu en þessa? Ef svo er, þá er best að ná sér bara í einhverja best of plötu.
Eh. Just don't care for this style.
Not my jam
2.5/5
"sigh, cry, almost die" is my morning alarm anthem
Early 60's "rock & roll". Hard to hate it because it's so bland and boring. But definitely nothing to love here. A whole bunch of sappy 2 min songs about girls and their pathetic love lives.
