Upbeat and quirky, but it all starts to sound the same after awhile. I gave it a few extra stars just for the weirdness of it all.

3, quirky rock lobster hours

Mostly notable for "Rock Lobster", which is an astounding new wave anthem. I remember downloading it back in Ye Olden Days of Napster and being amazed to discover it's nearly seven minutes long. I mean, I know it is, but it doesn't feel like that somehow.

It's definitely the B-52s but it sounds more late-60s than late-70s. Overall, it was listenable but lava and maybe planet claire were pretty much the only notable ones and even those weren't amazing

Rock Lobster will be with us until the heat death of the universe, but as what I'm not entirely sure.

Rock Lobster was huge in Australia in the 80s - it was everywhere all the time. We covered in my high school band of course. However the none of the rest of this album made any impact at all for some reason. So I was interested to listen to them, and thought this wasn't bad at all.

Better than I expected. I've held onto a longstanding animosity towards this band because Love Shack is one of the most overplayed and annoying songs of the last forty years, but it's fortunately not on here. The one hit single on here that I'm familiar with is Rock Lobster, a song I actually do like. Maybe the band is better than I give them credit - my only real exposure has been Love Shack, Rock Lobster, and Roam, a song that always felt like a particularly weak Blondie track. I also can't say I'm a fan of their kitschy aesthetic, something that always felt like Devo/Talking Heads idiosyncrasy but lacking the level of social commentary and taking a detour to the 50s/early 60s by way of John Waters. And while I like Devo and John Waters and love the Talking Heads, something about what the B-52s were doing always felt a little toothless by comparison. TLDR, I didn't hate it like I expected, but it didn't completely win me over.

This is the debut album from the new wave band The B-52's. The album was received well by critics, and the band quickly gained a fanbase as a result of this and the fun-loving lyrics and mood of their music. The band tried to emulate music from pop icons of earlier decades, but also add a little more funk and danceable beats. While this would seem like an imposter tactic, it paid off for the band because their music was in fact still good enough on its own. Although the music is good, I am not normally a fan of the pop genre, so that skews my opinion on this album.

All the typical B52 things - weird voice guy, solid vocal gal, quirky lyrics and keyboards - with a bit more punk style vocals than I expected.

"Planet Claire" sounds like a Bond song. "Rock Lobster" is honestly not a good song, but it's humor factor and bassline make up for the rest of it. All in all not too bad of an album just early new wave.

This is exactly what I was expecting when I receive the album this morning. I'm not sure if this is good but at the same time, it attends to my expectations. Well, I don't know, maybe my expectations were not good enough.

Knew a few of these but was surprised to find that this whole album didn't grab me as much as I had anticipated. Perhaps it's a grower.

Genre: New Wave 3/5 Better than your average New Wave venture, the B-52's self-titled album is one great half of music followed by what I would assume are six songs that they also tried on, but effort can't be heard, at least from where I'm standing. A few decent openers, and one mega-hit, Rock Lobster, but this is all The B-52's had to offer at this time. It makes for a semi-decent listen. This genre can sound grating at times, but we were early enough in the process when this album was conceived that this mostly sounds like punk/power pop continuation/progression. There aren't too many ridiculous arrangement choices a la Dexy Midnight Runners, and while it may lack in the experimenation department, this is decent inoffensive pop music. The vocals can be off-putting at times, but the arrangements are pretty straightforward. Much more boring than I was anticipating.

So delightfully kooky! And surprisingly rockin! I really enjoyed this more than I thought, and can't wait to listen to it again when I'm on the way to the beach to get PUMPED (and to get weird).

Pros: - It's a very unique sound. It's got this 50's ish thing, but the guitars and vocals are more experimental then what they were doing in the 50s. Cons: - One reason why I don't have this up higher is that I think there's something with the songwriting that keeps it from being a 4 or 5 but I can't exactly figure it out. "Dance This Mess Around" for example is a really cool song- it's energetic yet also laid back. The vocals yell in your face while the guitars play a minimalism riff that repeats throughout. It's a great sound, but I can't help but feel like the recording engineer hit the "record" button and they just jammed this track out. What makes it even harder to pinpoint is that the album has tracks like Rock Lobster, which show multi faceted strengths in songwriting; the structure is super well thought out, the instrumentation really great, the lyrics are funny and a little simple but have such a unique theme. It makes me think this song had a lot of thought put into it. Misc: - Overall I enjoy the album and it's a fun listen. I think maybe if it was a little more dynamic and strayed a little further at times from the variables that seem to appear in most tracks: mid tempo / drumset / clean, spanky guitar / fun vocals , then I would rate it a 4. It's always hard to say (write) something like that though because I do understand that this is their sound. Rock Lobster is one of the quirkiest songs of all time.

The first 4 songs are absolutely stellar. They are quirky unique and catchy. Unfortunately the rest of the album doesn’t quite hold up as well, being weird without being so entertaining.

Loved this as a kid (my teen cohorts definitely not getting it, putting me in for a bit of mockery - but they were all drunkenly dancing to Love Shack in college in just a few short years). Did not hold up for me quite so well - the minimalist kitsch, the repetition. But still enjoyed it.

i really hated the background track because it was just so repetitive. it had no interesting aspect to it it it was just a basic beat and was snooze worthy.

The whole album was extremely energetic, but while some songs were catchy and groovy, others sounded a bit like a middle school talent show act that everyone uncomfortably claps for. Will have to try this one again. 2.5, but I'll give it a 3.

High-pitched melodies from a keyboard/organ, shouting lyrics, energetic drums, yet somehow this was not quite punk and way more funk. In a way the sound is futuristic and something one would expect from an episode of "The Jetsons". The album opens with "Planet Claire" using what had become an ubiquitous bass line synonymous with action television of the 60s the kind that is familiar to anyone who has watched "Nick at Nite" at any point in their life. Playful and fun, again, something akin to the enjoyment and perhaps dystopian vibe of "The Jetsons" where fashion is eccentric and okay, where old-fashioned does not exist or even matter where the world is in automated order in need of flirtation with chaos. The album is remarkably progressive in this sense. Punkish attitude minus the statement pieces, it is though one has stepped into the world of Scott Pilgrim where a strange mix of apathy and personal drive have collided. The album lyrics are anthological with themes and linear storytelling seemingly nonexistent, but rather than being lost the B-52s have assumed the role of tour guide from Planet Claire to the exciting life on a beach.

Rock Lobster is always a jam, but most of the album is a bit difficult to listen to just because of how odd it is. Granted, I can definitely see how this was a very influential album.

New wave surf-rock that revels in its own silliness- I careered between being immensely on board and feeling incredibly irritated by every note. Between them, the band carve out a very niche, idiosyncratic sound that seems to take the oddball "art-punk" scene of the late 70s to its extreme. Did any other band take it this far and enjoy the same level of commercial success and critical acclaim hand-in-hand? It's hard to imagine who else might have pulled it off. "Planet Claire" beams the band into the galaxy with a "retro-futuristic" feel even for 1978: a clean and trebly guitar riff twangs around a searing chromatic organ sequence in one of the strongest instrumental moments on the record. "Dance This Mess Around" climaxes in an addictive insistent refrain, and "6060-842" is catchy if a bit repetitive. There's a lot of fun to be had if I'm in the right frame of mind, but the chief flaw is that in several places, the inherent novelty factor becomes too pronounced, and "B-52's" becomes obnoxious for the sake of it. The main offenders are Fred Schneider's constipated vocals (thank god they have multiple vocalists) and the relentlessy kitschy lyrics- "There's a Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon)" springs to mind. Both factors come to a head with the best known track "Rock Lobster", which I had no idea was 7 minutes long on the album version... it wasn't a welcome discovery. The musicianship and the songwriting is all quite simplistic, to striking effect on the album's best tracks but failing to redeem the inherent novelty value of the worst. "B-52's" can be quite a party, but if you're not on their wavelength, you'll be looking for the nearest open window to jump out of.

This album quickly establishes the B-52's iconic sound with Planet Claire, and also has Rock Lobster. There is definitely some room for growth, though, as some of the tracks are a bit aimless. I think their work gets better from here.

Another one of those "you've heard of them, but never listened to them" artists. Obviously familiar with "Rock Lobster", such a fun song. I did not realize that track is nearly 7 minutes long. As far as the album goes, it's quirky and fun, however there's some serious musicianship happening! It's actually a pretty decent surf-rock/new wave album. Didn't love it, but it's alright.

In this expert reviewer's opinion, these are not songs. These are goofy experimental jams with a few repeated phrases interspersed, which is cool too. My prior exposure to the B52s was Cosmic Thing, which is full of songs. Some really great ones. Songs or not, every single track is danceable, weird, at least slightly interesting. But also, who cares? Maybe I need to look under the beehive hair and Secret Agent Man grooves to find the point. B

Didn’t know this album was ‘79, earns a few points for that. Lead singer sounds like Dead Kennedy’s or New Order. The aesthetic is like punk but in the style of 50s atom punk. I feel like the band are mediocre musicians. A few songs started to sound like a kids album, or maybe kids albums sound like this. It did start to grow on me a little. But just okay, 3.

I was dreading playing this, but there was actually some interesting stuff going on. Can definitely hear some Oh Sees in some of this. Some weird/fun/wild stuff going on. Some obnoxious stuff for sure.

Cool band, wanted it to go longer than it did.

Good stuff. Not a huge fan of new wave. Like a lot of B52s, Cars, Talking Heads. But not enough to buy any albums.

Finally something with a beat. Last few albums have been slow/boring. I wasn't expecting to like this very much, probably because I'm not that big a fan of 80s music and I thought this would be pretty pop-oriented (Love Shack is probably the only song of theirs have some awareness of). But it's surprisingly good. Fun surf guitars and driving beats. Vocals remind me of X a bit. Good, enjoyable listen but also nothing earth shattering for me so it's unlikely I'll revisit much. Very solid 3 stars.

One of the freshest, disruptive bands of their time. I can see why John Lennon liked them (e.g. a touch of "Yoko-like" vocals in Rock Lobster?). I can't listen to more than one album at a time, it ends up being all too similar, but I must recognize their new, innovative approach.

This album really rocked in places. Lovely mix of 50s and 60s surf pop, garage and punk. Really interesting and catchy. They just made me smile and I love their voices. At times I thought, 'ah this is just silly' and their voices are really annoying. A couple of songs sounded like a really good version of The Wiggles. Overall I really enjoyed it.

Side one or the first half are classics that have lived on. Side two I haven't heard before and their style wears a bit thin on it. Hard to put a label on this but post-punk/new wave dance for the era could work.

8/18/26. Didn't feel this one, some catchy tunes but felt was repetitive and a little corny. I like some later B-52 songs but this album was a miss.

First time hearing The B-52's and it was a bit of an off-putting experience in the beggining, specially starting with the "Planet Claire" track but then it kinda morphed into something more approachable and common but still kinda retaining this weird vibe that kinda feels like the band's trademark. Sadly not my cup of tea but it was worth giving it a try. "Rock Lobster" which lookes like the main title of the album was funny even, but I'm certainly not adding it to my repertoire. Favorite track was "Lava"!

Planet Claire - I didn't enjoy this, it feels like a low rent effort at a punk song. 52 Girls - Same as above Dance This Mess Around - Hated it. Skip. Rock Lobster - This is what I thought more of the album was going to be, joke songs that are actually good yet silly. It does go on a bit though at nearly 7 minutes that spoils it. Lava - average song on any average 70s punk album Gave up after this. I think they really try to capture that free surfing sound but it doesn't materialise. It's quirky but not fun, weird but not funny.

Pretty meh, again. Not bad, and not the irritating pop-rock nonsense of the 90's that I know them for, but very forgettable album. Sorry.

Too camp for me

I think Rock Lobster is a bad song and this album is too corny. Its too dated and for a different generation and just feels old. There are some fun sounds but nothing comes together. The generational equivalent to YouTube poop songs and thats ok. We all need fun.

I typically hate the B-52‘s radio play, but this actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I think it’s the vocals of the two lead singers that get to me. 2.5/5.

The B-52's have always been too kitschy for me. The nasal vocals, high register organ, and persistent bass lines just grate on me.

I was excited when I first heard Rock Lobster (a great song) but disappointed with the rest of the album. Planet Claire isn't bad but the rest isn't very good. They did have a unique sound though.

The first couple of tracks were amazing. Really eclectic and witty homage to 2950s b-movies. Then it goes on and on and on. Horrible. I don't ever want to listen to this again. Two stars for the exuberance and creative pastiche-ery.

I hate Rock Lobster. Hate it. It's barely a song is it. Just a collection of noises and stupid people. The rest of this is a little better, but not much. It has the good grace to rattle through though, so at least the mindlessness is quite temporary.

I was aware of The B-52s before O listened to this. I liked the Peter Gunn Style intro to Planet Claire and I enjoyed Rock Lobster (although it’s far too long at 7 minutes). The rest of the album felt quite samey and a bit boring for me. I do appreciate its quirkiness but I don’t think I’d bother to listen to it ever again.

What separates it from other records of its ilk is that this one contains some highlights (like 'Rock Lobster') which make it standout ever slightly. 7/10 [KEEP]

For me it feels noisy after a while, vs. enjoyable. Classic punky music that evokes mike meyers dancing in my living room.

When to listen: surf dance party. Okay, the B-52s are weird and fun. I can bop around as good as the next person. I recognize how interesting and unique the album is, but to be real, the shrieking kinda got to me.

I've always found their sound to border between catchy and obnoxious. It's undeniably catchy, but am I enjoying it most of the time, no not really.

I loved rock lobster as a child. I knew all the lyrics and would sing it by heart. Unfortunately, not only does the song Rock Lobster not age well for an adult palate, but the rest of the songs are annoying and just kinda chant along. I'll give them extra points for having fun but they were annoying while doing it. 1.5/5 -> 2/5

I wanted to like it more than I actually liked it. The vocals can be grating and their shtick wore thin by the end. Overall not a terrible band in small doses, but listening to the entire album is not the way.

I quite enjoyed this musically, but the lyrics and the male vocals didn't work for me at all. The female vocals were better, but they're still ultimately singing about nothing at all, which whilst being the entire point, does little for me, especially across an entire album.

The B-52’s are so weird

This album really isnt really my thing. That being said, vocals are really jarring at times and production sounds the same on most songs. Its either too much or too boring at times. This album is a light 2 stars out of 5. I can see why people might like it but again, not my thing.

This is a band that I've always been told I should like but that I can never get into. The vocals bother the hell out of me. The lyrics do nothing for me. I should've timed my listen better than I did, because nothing pissed me off more than hearing "Rock Lobster" while stuck in standstill traffic on Leestown Road (aka the seventh circle of hell). By the time I finally got through, "There's A Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon)" came on and I thought about the futility of life and maybe driving into oncoming traffic. But "52 Girls" was a fun jam!

It's odd that an album of only 9 tracks totalling 40 minutes can feel ill disciplined, but I found most of the tracks overly repetitive. Even Rock Lobster overstays its welcome. In general the vocals are unpleasant and the instrumental work feels pedestrian.

To me, this album is just silliness. Nothing to hate, just silly. Two stars.

Would be a 3 if what’s his name wasn’t yodeling on every track.

I mostly hate the B-52s, and have always considered them a second rate novelty band. But other than the familiarity with the iconic "Rock Lobster" (arguably their best song), I had never heard this record. And I have to say, this one works a bit better than their later, more pop oriented affairs. The more angular, surf-rock sound suits the material better. And while on the whole I find the record weak, there are a handful of winners on here including "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", and "There's A Moon In The Sky". But they are not enough to carry the day.

Best Song: Rock Lobster Wow, I really didn't enjoy this much at all. I guess I can understand why this was included in the list as it was part of the evolution from punk to New Wave/80s pop. But that doesn't mean I have to like it! The vocals are by the far the weakest part, especially Fred Schneider. My favorite song is Rock Lobster off of this and makes me wonder if SNL used that for their skit Space Pants. 2/5.

Meh, no track really stood out to me

2.0 stars This one just didn’t land for me. I can absolutely respect the boldness...releasing something this campy as a debut album takes nerve. But it felt intentionally unserious in a way that I struggled to connect with. It’s not incompetent, and I understand why there’s an audience for it, I just rarely connect with the art-school theatricality of the absurd.

Id give this album 52 out of 100.

I have discovered something today: I don't like Rock Lobster. I thought I did, but it turns out I only like the *idea* of Rock Lobster. That bass line is so enticing, the surf rock drums, the ascending run of vocal ahhs, the weird organ stuff... If you've only heard the iconic snippets of it, it's a wickedly cool song. Turns out it's nearly 7 minutes long - and I'd argue that 6 of those minutes are entirely unneccesary. The rest of this album is wacky and harsh and weird and the sort of thing I should find interesting but just... don't. It's just not for me.

This album sounds like it would have been fun t dance to and hear in movies at the time it was released. But yeah strong 3 to light 4/10. I don't like music where I can't tell if the singer is singing or talking

I thought I would like this but it really wasn’t for me. In fairness I have never liked Rock Lobster. When I was around six we had to do a dance in a school play to this and I absolutely hated the song. My feelings have not changed and I have since associated the song with that.

Meh....not terrible, but sort of uninteresting after a while. I like the dance-y, funky songs better than the punk-y yellers that sound like a pre-cursor to Sonic Youth (e.g. "Dance This Mess Around", really didnt like the vocals on that)."Rock Lobster" is a good, hypnotic riff and a fun enough song. Feels like pretty standard fare for a new wave album: surprising moments of musicality with punk energy; a bizarre, campy, tongue-in-cheek cover (in this case "Downtown", the way Devo did "Satisfaction" or Sid Vicious did "My Way", etc), a whole bunch of synths, and random songs with a bunch of numbers in the title ("6060-842"). Didn't love it, I'm at like a 2.5 and want to round up because it was short, but I think the annoying moments were annoying enough to make it a 2.

Wow. What the hell happened here. This was deeply wierd but with hints of some good shit. Reminded me of Primus, especially the male singer. I mean I did kinda like this but not sure I would ever play this volunterily at least not the whole album. Best song... well it has to be Rock Lobster. Let’s be honest: this album is a turd. A straight-up musical bs. The music is bad, the production is worse, and everything sounds like it was recorded while someone was actively stepping on a dying seagull hooked up to a cheap keyboard. Nothing here is tight, clean, or pleasant. It screeches, it wobbles, it actively assaults your ears. And yet… it’s funny as hell. This is music with the same energy as making a terrible decision on a night out purely for the story. You don’t like it, you know it’s wrong, but you do it anyway because it’ll be hilarious in retrospect. That’s The B-52’s. It’s not good, it’s just committed. Fully, shamelessly committed to being annoying. “Rock Lobster” is the perfect example. It’s stupid, it’s unbearable, it’s catchy in the most cursed way possible. It sounds like a joke that goes on way too long, but that’s the joke. This whole album feels like shitpost music decades before shitposting existed: loud, dumb, ugly, and weirdly unforgettable. So no, this album isn’t good. The production sucks, the songs are ridiculous, and listening to it sober feels like a mistake. But it is entertaining, in the same way bad ideas often are. Some very catchy tunes throughout the album, the vocals can be catchy but feel a little shouty at times. A couple of noticeable songs that have seen popularity recently as well as some songs that recent artists have sampled.

Nope. I know them well-enough to say this isn't a must hear album. Unique sound for the time, yes, for sure, but quality songs that stand the test of time, nope. With the voice on Fred, it's hard to believe they got an album contract in the first place. I dig "Private Idaho", "Roam" and I can tolerate "Love Shack" but their songs are so bizarre and theatrical it's just not for a wide audience or casual listening. I definitely appreciate the songs the ladies sing more. "Rock Lobster" is the long fun song on this album but it's almost 7 mins in it's unedited format, just enough to push a guy over the edge and go postal. The 60's vibe is what makes it work, like the theme to The Munsters or something. "Downtown" was kinda fun. It all sounds like it came from the same Slurpee machine. They're still riding their wave, somehow, and their name is instantly recognizable across a few generations now. One minor hit that still gets airplay, a unique sound to say the least, they left a mark, that's how I'll leave it. 2 stars.

Honestly, I think the album is a bit weird and all over the place. I feel like the album has a theme, but there are so many "nasal" sounds that is just noice if you ask me.

Really quirky music for sure. Somehow finding it hard to take this seriously. Feels more like circus music at times. 'Rock Lobster' is a funny silly song, but I don't know if I'd consider it a good song? I can understand that this album fits the list as something completely different, which I appreciate. And it's fun to have heard the album. But I don't want to put it on when I want to listen to some propery, good music.

Weird album. Classified as a new wave album - definitely has a punk sensibility. The male singer’s delivery grates a little bit during a full album play through. Notable songs include 52 Girls, Dance This Mess Around, Rock Lobster, Hero Worship.

Not for me

The B-52s are quite an oddity of Pop music in the 70s and 80s as their unconventional sound reached such boundaries that it managed to somehow break into the mainstream and cultivate radio waves with its' very 50s inspired sounds. As much as I appreciate the kookiness of this project I found it wasn't often very up my alley. I appreciate weird and unapologetic music a lot for how bold it is willing to be, but sometimes I have to stop and wonder why didn't someone step in and say something before it got this far. The B-52's feel more iconic for how they are spoken of rather than how their music actually sounds in my eyes. Maybe I am not the target audience for this album or maybe it is an overrated gem of its' time but either way I don't think I'll be coming back to this anytime soon. Nuff said.

I have to admit this wasn't what I expected going into this - from the well-known tracks by this group that I knew previously, I thought it was going to be a drag of overly happy-go-lucky types of songs that I would immediately mentally check out of. There was still a lot of this feeling bubbling up for me in this project - that kind of feeling where you feel like you're being forced to be happy - but I really enjoyed the variations in rhythms within tracks here, and I also loved the intentionally imperfect vocals. Some strong lyrics as well. Giving it a 2 not because it's bad, but because I've given a lot of 3s so far in this journey and definitely did not like this project as much as those 3s.

Really dug the opening instrumental. Had me wondering “Am I going to dig the B-52s?” Though I did like their sound, and both the lead singer vocals are iconic, it was strange that most of the songs just didn’t hit for me. I found myself waiting for most of the songs to be over.
