Reviews (page 8 of 9)

For me it feels noisy after a while, vs. enjoyable. Classic punky music that evokes mike meyers dancing in my living room.

When to listen: surf dance party. Okay, the B-52s are weird and fun. I can bop around as good as the next person. I recognize how interesting and unique the album is, but to be real, the shrieking kinda got to me.

I've always found their sound to border between catchy and obnoxious. It's undeniably catchy, but am I enjoying it most of the time, no not really.

I loved rock lobster as a child. I knew all the lyrics and would sing it by heart. Unfortunately, not only does the song Rock Lobster not age well for an adult palate, but the rest of the songs are annoying and just kinda chant along. I'll give them extra points for having fun but they were annoying while doing it. 1.5/5 -> 2/5

I didnt like it

I wanted to like it more than I actually liked it. The vocals can be grating and their shtick wore thin by the end. Overall not a terrible band in small doses, but listening to the entire album is not the way.

I hate the dudes voice

I quite enjoyed this musically, but the lyrics and the male vocals didn't work for me at all. The female vocals were better, but they're still ultimately singing about nothing at all, which whilst being the entire point, does little for me, especially across an entire album.

Ok in B-52’s defense, it’s genuinely not their fault that I was deeply sleep deprived when this album got assigned to me. I don’t have kids but I imagine the experience of listening to this album sleep-deprived is similar to being woken up by your 4yo twins because they needed to tell you about their new imaginary friend: “🫩What’s that? It wasn’t a rock? Oh it was a rock lobster. Thats great sweetie I— what’s that about the moon 🫩? It’s called the moon? That’s so true — listen honey daddy needs to close his eyes for a few more minutes…” All that being said, if I was a quirked-up white boy living in a beach town in the 70’s I totally could see myself bumping this all summer long, half as a way to troll my friends and half out of unironic enjoyment.

cocaine music

glad they made this glad i never have to hear it again B-2/5's

A collection of the most insufferable vocalists, vocal styles, instruments, and overall musical genres. I'm not going to give this music extra kudos for employing elements of absurdity when the music is still bad.

I dig the hair, but not the music.

really not a fan

It was okay. It actually had some solid points, but it's obviously over the top obnoxious.

Weird and wacky and a little bit a tacky

The B-52’s are so weird

This album really isnt really my thing. That being said, vocals are really jarring at times and production sounds the same on most songs. Its either too much or too boring at times. This album is a light 2 stars out of 5. I can see why people might like it but again, not my thing.

very overrated; also, how is this dance music?

None of the songs lived up to rock lobster the only real big hit on their

“Rock Lobster” is still very cool

This is a band that I've always been told I should like but that I can never get into. The vocals bother the hell out of me. The lyrics do nothing for me. I should've timed my listen better than I did, because nothing pissed me off more than hearing "Rock Lobster" while stuck in standstill traffic on Leestown Road (aka the seventh circle of hell). By the time I finally got through, "There's A Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon)" came on and I thought about the futility of life and maybe driving into oncoming traffic. But "52 Girls" was a fun jam!

Almost fine but just a bit too ridiculous

Fatuous

It's odd that an album of only 9 tracks totalling 40 minutes can feel ill disciplined, but I found most of the tracks overly repetitive. Even Rock Lobster overstays its welcome. In general the vocals are unpleasant and the instrumental work feels pedestrian.

To me, this album is just silliness. Nothing to hate, just silly. Two stars.

Would be a 3 if what’s his name wasn’t yodeling on every track.

I mostly hate the B-52s, and have always considered them a second rate novelty band. But other than the familiarity with the iconic "Rock Lobster" (arguably their best song), I had never heard this record. And I have to say, this one works a bit better than their later, more pop oriented affairs. The more angular, surf-rock sound suits the material better. And while on the whole I find the record weak, there are a handful of winners on here including "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", and "There's A Moon In The Sky". But they are not enough to carry the day.

annoying

Not for me, I can see the appeal but too plinky plonky.

Parhaat: Rock Lobster

I like the idea of the B-52’s better than the music. The hits and live show are great but not into the albums as a whole

No. Just not my thing. B52s have never been my thing.

I would like to thank Peter Griffin for introducing me to ‘Rock Lobster’

Best Song: Rock Lobster Wow, I really didn't enjoy this much at all. I guess I can understand why this was included in the list as it was part of the evolution from punk to New Wave/80s pop. But that doesn't mean I have to like it! The vocals are by the far the weakest part, especially Fred Schneider. My favorite song is Rock Lobster off of this and makes me wonder if SNL used that for their skit Space Pants. 2/5.

This feels like an elaborate joke, its not good.

Slatki album, ali nije mi u cijelosti zanimljiv, imaju oni boljih. 2/5, 4/10

Meh, no track really stood out to me

2.0 stars This one just didn’t land for me. I can absolutely respect the boldness...releasing something this campy as a debut album takes nerve. But it felt intentionally unserious in a way that I struggled to connect with. It’s not incompetent, and I understand why there’s an audience for it, I just rarely connect with the art-school theatricality of the absurd.

Id give this album 52 out of 100.

I have discovered something today: I don't like Rock Lobster. I thought I did, but it turns out I only like the *idea* of Rock Lobster. That bass line is so enticing, the surf rock drums, the ascending run of vocal ahhs, the weird organ stuff... If you've only heard the iconic snippets of it, it's a wickedly cool song. Turns out it's nearly 7 minutes long - and I'd argue that 6 of those minutes are entirely unneccesary. The rest of this album is wacky and harsh and weird and the sort of thing I should find interesting but just... don't. It's just not for me.

Brutal

There’s no surprises here: the album tracks you haven’t heard before sound exactly how you’d expect.

This album sounds like it would have been fun t dance to and hear in movies at the time it was released. But yeah strong 3 to light 4/10. I don't like music where I can't tell if the singer is singing or talking

I thought I would like this but it really wasn’t for me. In fairness I have never liked Rock Lobster. When I was around six we had to do a dance in a school play to this and I absolutely hated the song. My feelings have not changed and I have since associated the song with that.

Old but gold

Can’t really get into the music, not necessarily for me. I do enjoy rock lobster every once in a while, but I don’t really like the rest of the album.

love their vibe, but jsutdont like these songs. rock lobster scares me.

sort of like the police in that... i like this sound, in small doses. too much of this sound is annoying.

I don't know - they might have polished their sound along the way, but this debut album is a bit too random for me.

:/ not for me

Meh....not terrible, but sort of uninteresting after a while. I like the dance-y, funky songs better than the punk-y yellers that sound like a pre-cursor to Sonic Youth (e.g. "Dance This Mess Around", really didnt like the vocals on that)."Rock Lobster" is a good, hypnotic riff and a fun enough song. Feels like pretty standard fare for a new wave album: surprising moments of musicality with punk energy; a bizarre, campy, tongue-in-cheek cover (in this case "Downtown", the way Devo did "Satisfaction" or Sid Vicious did "My Way", etc), a whole bunch of synths, and random songs with a bunch of numbers in the title ("6060-842"). Didn't love it, I'm at like a 2.5 and want to round up because it was short, but I think the annoying moments were annoying enough to make it a 2.

I didn't like it, but it was so weird I'd be willing to listen to it again. Not a fan of the male vocals.

Previously I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this list with bands I only knew from their obnoxious hit singles, when they’ve actually had pretty good albums. Not this time.

Wow. What the hell happened here. This was deeply wierd but with hints of some good shit. Reminded me of Primus, especially the male singer. I mean I did kinda like this but not sure I would ever play this volunterily at least not the whole album. Best song... well it has to be Rock Lobster. Shout out to There's A Moon In The Sky (Called The Moon) for just the lyrics alone.

Ok enough, I listened it but forgot it. Jazzy instrumentals I think?

Let’s be honest: this album is a turd. A straight-up musical bs. The music is bad, the production is worse, and everything sounds like it was recorded while someone was actively stepping on a dying seagull hooked up to a cheap keyboard. Nothing here is tight, clean, or pleasant. It screeches, it wobbles, it actively assaults your ears. And yet… it’s funny as hell. This is music with the same energy as making a terrible decision on a night out purely for the story. You don’t like it, you know it’s wrong, but you do it anyway because it’ll be hilarious in retrospect. That’s The B-52’s. It’s not good, it’s just committed. Fully, shamelessly committed to being annoying. “Rock Lobster” is the perfect example. It’s stupid, it’s unbearable, it’s catchy in the most cursed way possible. It sounds like a joke that goes on way too long, but that’s the joke. This whole album feels like shitpost music decades before shitposting existed: loud, dumb, ugly, and weirdly unforgettable. So no, this album isn’t good. The production sucks, the songs are ridiculous, and listening to it sober feels like a mistake. But it is entertaining, in the same way bad ideas often are. You don’t respect it, you don’t recommend it, but you laugh, and sometimes that’s enough. 5/10 R O C K L O B S T E R Note to my future self: listen to this while absolutely obliterated

Vraiment trop chelou pour moi

Definitely sounds like a debut album. The bones are there for something better but it sounds so childish in a bad way.

Was kinda just a lot of annoying vocals over annoying instrumentals, not the worst thing in the world but not overly enjoyable

Una gran canción; pocos matices…

Punk rock realy not my jam. Rock lobster being the only hit .

It’s ok, not really my jam. A little screechy/dissonant at times

p427. 1979. 2 stars. This is what you get if you splice Devo with Blondie. Quirky US New Wave, but too much filler for repeated listening. On the plus side, it's short and contains one bona fide classic (Rock Lobster).

Rock Lobster. Was not able to listen to debut album on Spotify or Youtube music.

‘This song is too short - how can I spin it out to seven minutes?’ ‘Maybe try listing a whole bunch of fish and shit.’ ‘Ok, rock on!’ <A few hours later …> ‘This one’s too short, too. Do you think just putting in a bunch of celestial bodies would work?’ ‘Fuck it, why not - what’s the worst that could happen?!’ This album. This shitty album is the worst that could happen. What a load of shit.

I like the idea of combining surf rock and new wave, but the voices are so grating, especially the women.

Idk about this one chief

Some very catchy tunes throughout the album, the vocals can be catchy but feel a little shouty at times. A couple of noticeable songs that have seen popularity recently as well as some songs that recent artists have sampled.

Nope. I know them well-enough to say this isn't a must hear album. Unique sound for the time, yes, for sure, but quality songs that stand the test of time, nope. With the voice on Fred, it's hard to believe they got an album contract in the first place. I dig "Private Idaho", "Roam" and I can tolerate "Love Shack" but their songs are so bizarre and theatrical it's just not for a wide audience or casual listening. I definitely appreciate the songs the ladies sing more. "Rock Lobster" is the long fun song on this album but it's almost 7 mins in it's unedited format, just enough to push a guy over the edge and go postal. The 60's vibe is what makes it work, like the theme to The Munsters or something. "Downtown" was kinda fun. It all sounds like it came from the same Slurpee machine. They're still riding their wave, somehow, and their name is instantly recognizable across a few generations now. One minor hit that still gets airplay, a unique sound to say the least, they left a mark, that's how I'll leave it. 2 stars.

Honestly, I think the album is a bit weird and all over the place. I feel like the album has a theme, but there are so many "nasal" sounds that is just noice if you ask me.

It’s a me problem but I just can’t get there…

Really quirky music for sure. Somehow finding it hard to take this seriously. Feels more like circus music at times. 'Rock Lobster' is a funny silly song, but I don't know if I'd consider it a good song? I can understand that this album fits the list as something completely different, which I appreciate. And it's fun to have heard the album. But I don't want to put it on when I want to listen to some propery, good music.

This is tight af

Weird album. Classified as a new wave album - definitely has a punk sensibility. The male singer’s delivery grates a little bit during a full album play through. Notable songs include 52 Girls, Dance This Mess Around, Rock Lobster, Hero Worship.

Not for me

The B-52s are quite an oddity of Pop music in the 70s and 80s as their unconventional sound reached such boundaries that it managed to somehow break into the mainstream and cultivate radio waves with its' very 50s inspired sounds. As much as I appreciate the kookiness of this project I found it wasn't often very up my alley. I appreciate weird and unapologetic music a lot for how bold it is willing to be, but sometimes I have to stop and wonder why didn't someone step in and say something before it got this far. The B-52's feel more iconic for how they are spoken of rather than how their music actually sounds in my eyes. Maybe I am not the target audience for this album or maybe it is an overrated gem of its' time but either way I don't think I'll be coming back to this anytime soon. Nuff said.

I have to admit this wasn't what I expected going into this - from the well-known tracks by this group that I knew previously, I thought it was going to be a drag of overly happy-go-lucky types of songs that I would immediately mentally check out of. There was still a lot of this feeling bubbling up for me in this project - that kind of feeling where you feel like you're being forced to be happy - but I really enjoyed the variations in rhythms within tracks here, and I also loved the intentionally imperfect vocals. Some strong lyrics as well. Giving it a 2 not because it's bad, but because I've given a lot of 3s so far in this journey and definitely did not like this project as much as those 3s.

473/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

That was really annoying. Whoever have that guy specifically a recording contract should be sued.

Tämäkin on tuttu bändi, tosin ainoastaan hittinsä ”Love Shack” olen kuullut useampaan kertaan. Tuskin tulee kuunneltua uudestaan, letkeydestään huolimatta. Olisi aika monotonista ilman naisvokaaleita.

i liked the general vibe of the album but I didn't save any particular song

2 sterne

Not my thing. Not sure this has aged well

This just feels like they were trying to be interesting but it just comes out so boring. Rock lobster made me chuckle due to family guy then it went on for 7 mins. Not for me

The gulf between “how clever we are” and “how clever we think we are” is widest for the B-52s. This is weird music for people who never met a weird person.

Quirky album. Rock Lobster is the one oddball radio hit

I enjoy their energy but random shouty talking through songs don’t make melodic music.

Næ lítilli tengingu. Eflaust betra á sínum tíma. Hresst inn á milli.

Miiiid

Interesting listen. Some good but a lot that didn’t connect. Don’t get rock lobster at all. Males voice was biggest issue. Probably a 4/10

Top track: 52 Girls

Terrible voice. No control over vocal cord at all, extremely casual and nasal. It doesn’t even deserve an honourable mention.. so I won’t give it a one star.

Iraq Lobster

I get the vibe they’re going for, but it’s a miss for me

They’re fun.

I wanted to love this, and maybe I would have if I'd heard it when I was young, but too much screaming.

No one can deny the B-52's are a weird band, and this is a weirdly wonderful album. Maybe just a bit too weird for me, but was blown away by the female vocalists range and technique.

The B-52s are such an interesting band. Their songs are quirky and fun on their own, but a whole album can get a little grating. Also, Rock Lobster is like two minutes too long. Still, you’ve got to respect how unapologetically unique they are. Favorite tracks: - Rock Lobster

Its certainly irritating. It's fine like, but not the sort of thing id listen to for pleasure. Its fine Annoying but fine

well, idk what to think. i like their track Love Shack but this album was a bit annoying. it was straight shit but it was kinda meh

Started off above expectations but once we hit Rock Lobster the whole thing was ruined

Really dug the opening instrumental. Had me wondering “Am I going to dig the B-52s?” Though I did like their sound, and both the lead singer vocals are iconic, it was strange that most of the songs just didn’t hit for me. I found myself waiting for most of the songs to be over.

I'm really not sure on this one. It's slower than I wanted. The music is great, the lyrics are fun. It's an odd album. I usually enjoy the more out there albums but this didn't land.

Every once in a while, one of their popular songs is a guilty pleasure. But I can only take the B52s in small doses. And what isn't popular is just plain weird. An entire album is just too much weirdness at once. 2.

i wish the girls ditched weird al

Found this surprisingly fun! I don’t think I would go back to it, but something different which I enjoyed

Love the band, but a few songs on this album were more annoying than fun

Litt artig, litt irriterande

When you need a creature feature soundtrack, Halloween playlist, or endless amounts of kitsch.

Hmmm, ok. A bit quirky - some interesting compositions.

1.9 Shite. Felt like they gave a bunch of arts sixth form students a studio for the day. Gained nothing from that.

It’s not you, it’s me. I just hate new wave.

This nerd rock is both catchy and grating at the same time. The guitars parts all sound similar and the vocal delivery kind of get on my nerves.

Fun .. but forgettable

I was not previously familiar with this album at all. I was a little bit disappointed. The supposed best track on this album is Rock Lobster but I did not like it. The rest of the tracks didn't really do anything for me either. Would not listen again.

That was pretty shit tbh

Only know a couple of songs, mainly known from REM for me, really not a fan of their voices

People say this is a fun album, I guess we all have different definitions of fun

Rating: 3.5/10 Riffs are quite interesting, the vocals ruin this album for me.

This was ok , but let's be honest I'm only going to listen to Rock Lobster again

Man, I can’t. I’m glad people like Rock Lobster and Rocky Horror Picture Show, but it ain’t my bag. The songs sound the same, too hipster and no feeling for me. It’s a jerky Patti Smith that is younger and cheek to the max.

Großartig!

Have only listened to love shock prior to hearing this, and yes the whole album sounds exactly the same to that. Couldn't deal with the shrieking and weird vocals. Not for me.

Rock Lobster!

Not a terrible album but it's a little too much for me. It's kind of whimsical which isn't necessarily bad but I have heard it so much that I'm pretty much over it. It was kind of fun and 'edgy' when I was young but I will be fine hearing it only through pop culture these days.

The B-52s were late to the psychedelic party, and someone cut the drugs wrong.

Even though I've never heard a full B52s album, I thought I'd enjoy this. More annoying than enjoyable.

I call this be-bop music. I don’t know if that is a thing and I’ve heard it before but that’s what I think. It’s a niche, it’s an aquired taste and I think it’s something you can’t binge listen to. These guys aren’t at least. Choice cut: Rock Lobster

the last three songs a really good but overall kind of boring 5/10

Man that voice gets grating even in 30 minutes. I get why it’s on the list but after a couple songs I started to feel like I was in an asylum. High 2.

Just… special

okay meh

Love Shack, afschuwelijk! Twee sterretjes voor de moeite.

Kind of grates after a few songs. plus 2 for rock lobster

Dahn tahn

Great length. I did not enjoy this much except for Rock Lobster which was kind of catchy. High 2.

4/10 - This was just such a weird album. Lucas said they made love shack and he knew the song rock lobster which was not great but is a fantastic title.

Well...I love punk post-punk don't get me wrong. This is surely iconic and unique but this is well...probably one of the least favorite album of the whole genre to me. Very unique but like...the intolerable way...

Wow man the B-52’s were way more surf rock-y than I imagined they’d be. Rock Lobster is a fun song. Overall though this was very same-y throughout and I got bored of it.

kling klong

- I guess it was alright, not the worst thing I've ever listened to - I liked that punk sound they had in a few of the tracks, as someone into bands like Le Tigre or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I heard some of their influence in this album - I did fade out though from time to time, and so all in all, I think it wasn't really my kind of album

Have never really liked the B-52's especially fucking love shack. Appreciate this is an earlier beast and I like the surf/punk vibe but still cannot get past the fucking love shack and annoying shouty man vocals. Should be a 3 - but its getting a 2 cause of the love shack baby.

There are two types of B-52’s songs. One with the organ slapping you in the face whilst Fred Schneider does his unique vocal stylings. I prefer the other type.

'Love shack' is a staple of my karaoke repertoire but I was a little nervous to listen to this album (and it doesn't even include LS). I liked it. I didn't love it, probably wouldn't revisit.

I just realized that I have only heard three songs from this band before listening to this album: Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, and of course Love Shack. I was expecting to like this album digging deeper into their music but somehow I didn't? I don't know why it didn't click with me whatsoever but I would rather go listen to Blondie. Don't know why this is on the list

Instrumentals were fun enough. Not much else I enjoyed.

It's crazy to me how so many modern albums get criticized for lacking variety, having bland lyrics, being overproduced, etc., only for people to rave about Rock Lobster in the reviews here. There must be some joke I'm missing because the discrepancy in ratings between some albums cannot be real

another group I had heard of but never listened to. Great start but after a few tracks I was disturbed ... but why? After a bit more of a listen I realised that there was potential here but the vocals were letting it down. Male voice is weak and female voices seem fine on backing but when it takes the lead it seems to lose any musicality. I like the arrangements and many tracks have potential but end up in the same kind of tempo and groove. Disappointing given what it could be.

S'okay. Didn't love the vocal work here. Instrumentals were fine. 'Rock Lobster' was the only one I cared for.

Most annoying band ever?

One play was enough. This album did nothing for me. Two stars is the best I can afford.

Good for what it does but I don't like what it does..... 🪨 🦞🦞

Fun little pop party band, pre-Love Shack when Rock Lobster was their highest draw. Not music I typically enjoy. Somebody must though.

52/100 Mid

Maybe on another day this could have been a 3. But it was just not my thing.

no new wave please

One dimensional, spawned is career

I don't even know what to do with this. This album started a long conversation of are the B-52s a paradoy band. They for sure aren't playing it straight, and they also aren't going deeply artistic. Strange listen. I kind of wish I had never heard them before just to be shocked at a first time listen on the list.

I had previously only heard Rock Lobster and never understood it. I don't get this. Like an ironic camp homage to the 1950s and 1960s. It is all too distracting for me to notice the music.

All songs sounded like a parody of themselves, like a cover sung at a karaoke

Quirky style but Rock Lobster is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here

Weird proto rock and roll. Wasn't really for me.

I hate the male singer's voice, he just sounds like he's trying to be ironic or something. It's also hard to take an album seriously when its centre point is a 6 minute song about a lobster. Better than 1* because the B-52s sound like a band that could make proper music if they wanted to, but instead they veer into joke territory too much for my liking

Death to America And butter sauce

Just another quirky punky new wave record... It is basically Talking Heads, just worse.

Rock lobster does not make the album one you must hear

I like a select few B-52 songs. Rock Lobster is one of them. Everything else on this album is absolutely grating vocal-wise.

Too much kitsch for me. Rock Lobster should not be 6:50. I know people dig the B-52's. But I am not one of those people.

Unique. 2.5.

B-52s are a weird band. No love shack in the album so it was hard to listen to. 2 stars

Rock Lobster has some incredible animal limitations. Other than that this is some fairly basic rock music and the girls voice sucks.

So weird. I wasn't a fan of the B-52s coming into this and I still am not after listening to a whole album. I really cannot get down with either one of the singers and the lyrics so so strange. Some of the instrumentals were pretty cool.

ok 6.5/10

Even though the whole thing seems to be steeped in irony, I couldn't enjoy the annoying voices.

I’ve listened to the B-52’s several times and outside of a couple of tracks just haven’t got on with them. This still hasn’t changed.

I thought this would be better.

- a little too quirky for me - I know Rock Lobster is popular but it’s still a little too weird for me

Well I can definitely say this was an interesting listen. I really struggled to decide if I liked it or disliked it. There were moments/songs that made me feel both. Overall I think I decided it's mostly not for me but I am glad I listened anyway.

Nice, driving beat the entire album long. But beyond that, not my cup of tea.

I basically only really liked one song - 52 girls

unique instrumentals, grating vocals

ok, i get it, the b-52s should absolutely be here. they created something unique combining new wave and the surf sound. this album comes across as bouncy and entertaining. they don't take themselves too seriously, and this album is evidence they just wanted to create some new and different music while having fun. but oh my gosh i have discovered i do not like the b-52s! i enjoy mindless pop a lot, and i'd say their music is mindless new wave. but oh my gosh the grating vocals from both lead singers have ruined the b-52s for me. i could not wait for this album to end. deuces ✌

Funky album though nothing especially stand out. Middling 2. Why did it sound like Yoko Ono collaborated for rock lobster.

Am I just unlucky or does the 1001 albums list primarily consists of rock records from the 1970s. From now on I’ll start skipping records, if they don’t catch my interest in any special way. This one was boring and annoying at first but the second listen was already more enjoyable. I’d describe the record as challenging Pop/Soft Punk.

2.3 - Wasn't into this honestly, maybe need to relisten

Why is American New Wave so bad 😭😭

I’d be curious to know why this album was chosen for this list.

There are some really cool tracks on this, and to be honest everything is really catchy even if I liked it or not. The song downtown really reminds me of M.I.A's stuff just the 70's version lol. 2.5/5

This album is like a fever dream fueled by pixie sticks and hairspray. It's undeniably catchy, but after a while, the sugar rush wears off and you're left with a bit of a headache. If you're looking for something to wake you up in the morning, this is it. But if you're seeking musical depth, you might want to look elsewhere.

Drop the dude and this band would be better.

This bands music makes me physically cringe.

I respect them because they're from Athens but not a huge fan

I'm rating this based only on the 4 songs that are available on YouTube (this is my very last album and I want to get it over with). But based on these tracks, this album seems to be on the uncomfortable end of the New Wave and Post Punk spectrums (meaning: more punk-like, kind of annoying, sort of tinny, kind of chaotic but also sort of repetitive). There's definitely better New Wave, there's definitely better Post Punk. I guess this one just got the right promotion at the right time to be historically significant in some way. And that's it - the last of my 1089 ratings! Would've been nice to end with a good one, but oh well.

I was surprised by how regularly bothered I was listening to this. I really love Kate Pierson's voice, but she spends so much time using it to make annoying noises in addition to her singing. Hero Worship is a great song! Rock Lobster is a gimmick that simply does not need to be almost 7 minutes long!

Ok in small doses. Just can’t listen to her voice for a long time

mér finnast lag og lag með þeim skemmtilegt. þetta gerði ekkert fyrir mig.

ROCK LOBSTER

It's alright.

I don’t love it, but I love it! Just need to be with a bunch of friends partying.

rock lobster is gud tho

I didn’t like much about this album - however Love Shack is one of my favorite songs.

this was a hard listen tbh, really wasn't feeling it, quite annoying at times I'm ngl. Not for me.

Not the best B-52s album out there. Also, why is Rock Lobster 7 minutes long?

Didn't know Rock Lobster was 7 min... I feel like allot of the songs are way too long. They are really catchy the first 2-3 min. But i hear how the female vocals has inspired other bands, both the good and the bad (not a fan of screaming and shouting female vocals)

Sometimes when you only know a band's hits, there's a reason. This was no exception. It's hard to take a full album of this even if it was a short one. Kate's voice is pretty great though. 2.5 stars

new wave strikes again

This is too much B-52s

Cocaine

This album is very repetitive and not very likable The only tolerable song is Rock Lobster

Well my little streak of 5 star albums had to end eventually. Planet Claire made me reconsider my stance on this band, but then 52 Girls played.... ugh. Kate's vocals occasionally just doesn't work for me. I do appreciate the fun atmosphere and creativity of the album. I can clearly see ties to this in much music that I enjoy (Flaming Lips, Stereolab, La Femme) but overall this just isn't for me.

really weird

Fun instrumentation but nobody in the band can sing.

A silly band.

The B-52s are musically actually a very solid band…right up until any time Fred Schneider opens his mouth, at which point it becomes unlistenable.

Not for me, thanks

Very early B-52s. Singing was mostly Fred Schneider, who can get a bit grating sometimes.

Weird, quirky and interesting album, but that's about it. It's okay for one listen, don't think I'd be coming back for another one. There are just not that many songs I would want to replay, other then maybe Red Lobster.

Hey b-52's, leave some staccato for the rest of us! 🦞🦞

i think this genre wasn’t really for me but i did enjoy a few songs like 52 Girls and Dance this mess around

Got steadily worse

Nonsense

I've never been a fan of this band's quirky singing-but-not-QUITE-singing and goofy cartoon music style.

Having only heard love shack before wasn’t expecting much from this album, so I was pleasantly surprised, still became a drag near the end though. Not one I’ll be rushing back to.

I was hoping I'd like this one more, but nope. Still don't like new wave...

Never been a fan of being weird for weirdness sake. Also, what are these songs so long?

I can only listen to the B-52's in the rarest of circumstances. My main problem with the band is that all of their songs sound alike and that Kate Pierson's vocal delivery is WAY over the top, bordering on the annoying. For me, they only have two or three good songs, none of which are not on this album. 2/5

1/9, 11%

Not my cup of tea. Didn't age well.

Ganske irriterende.

This is painfully average and has a diabolically bad opening track.

Somewhere between a 2 and 3 and I always round down. Rock lobster a banger, lot of songs that just didn’t get me going.

Weirdo geezer

You know those videos of some bimbo with a mic stopping random people to ask what song they're listening to? What if that happened to me today as I was walking to class, RBF and purposeful lesbian-walk fully activated, and in the most deadpan tone possible, I responded with, "Rock Lobster by the B-52s". God, I can only imagine the number of OHill furries that would come flocking to me. This album reminds me of a low point in my life. I'm talking about when I listened to Sleater-Kinney. This would be a 1, but I'd like to leave The B-52s under the false impression that their music was revolutionary when it really wasn't. I do have a tendency to lead people on.

I can’t with all these shitty albums anymore. It’s painful. Here’s another Family Guy video I guess. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZxdOeXUiJ0

Some songs were fun, some were really really annoying, reminded me of having a little brother. Brother gets 4 stars, album … not so much

You know it’s bad when one of the main compliments for an album is that “John Lennon said he enjoyed it”. Not that he loved it, was inspired by it, or couldn’t stop playing it. That he enjoyed it. Well, I enjoy my 10:30 AM shit’s, but you don’t see me putting that sh** in my Wikipedia page. And when I say 10:30 AM shit’s, I mean these albums. And when I say enjoy, I mean loath with an unbridled passion. If not for Rock Lobster, this would be a 1.

Thanks to MTV, I suffered throughout my teenage years from overexposure to the B-52's and to this day I can't listen. The songs are good, but it's trauma.

Alright, not my sound. Rock lobster song tho 🦞

huumehörhöt taas pästetty studioon...broidi vana kirjottanu random paskaa ja luuli että en huomaisThe whacked-out vocal affectation, pseudo-classical flourishes and bonkers lyrics give alienation a voice, sure, but more importantly a beat..shut the fuck up lava

Menetteli

Rock para dançar divertido tem sua importância. Mas não reconheço nenhum hit.

I didn't get what they were going for with this album. I didn't find it very enjoyable.

Some songs come very close to being too annoying, but mostly succeeds as Fun party music. I love Kate Pierson’s voice. Didn’t like the Petula Clark cover very much.

Thumb's up for originality. I dig the aesthetic. For a bit, at least. But as with Joy Division, a little goes a long way. Rock Lobster is a prime example. That song should be 1/3 as long. Still, the band is tight and they're fun. If this was the house band at a beach-side bar, I'd be thrilled.

Didn't mind this but it didn't shift my opinion of them as a band: quirky US college pop rock. I like the image and 'vibe', but it feels more of a homage than an update of those styles - see Deee-Lite for a more successful and interesting take on this, at least visually. 'There’s a Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon)' sums up the intellectual level of the album neatly enough. Style over substance, for me, albeit a style that I usually quite enjoy. I won't be moving to Planet Claire any time soon.

Take the same basic song - shout something surreal over the jangly guitars, add a few screeching girls and you have a hit album. Rock Lobster was fun, but a whole album of what is essentially the same song reprocessed is too much.

I respect it, and can see where some may enjoy it, but not really my cup of tea. Not something I would choose to listen to again.

Couldn’t even make it thru

Sounds like people having fun to me, but one listen was enough. Rock Lobster caught me off guard as I never placed the song with the band

Was expecting an album as crazy as rock lobster but most the other songs started interesting and became increasingly repetitive, glad to have heard it but wouldn't go back.

Much of it was quite hard to listen to. Rock Lobster was a welcome reprieve.

Quite a strange album, liked only "Hero Worship". Wasn't really for me.

This album is not horrible, but I didn't need to listen to it before I die. The sound is grating to me. I grew up hating this band. I thought maybe I could hear them from a different perspective so many years later, but my opinion hasn't changed. I stick through the whole album just to honor this process, but I didn't enjoy it. Downtown was the worst

Not my cup of tea, and overall their style and sound feels like a bit of a joke.

Now I understand why I only know Love Shack.

This is why I love the excercise we are doing because all I know by B-52s is love shack and I don’t particularly care for that song. His voice is annoying and I’m not sure why he was like “yeah I can be the singer”. Her voice is cool though. So much attitude. Especially on Dance This Mess Around. It reminded me of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their lyrics are stupid.

Not a real big fan of the cheesy music that sounds more like parody and a meme than an actual serious band. Even rock lobster isn't enough for me to give this album anything more than a 2.

At their best, the B-52s are the kind of fun where you can just turn off your brain and enjoy the party. Unfortunately, this album is too much dumb and not enough fun. Also the cover of Downtown is all kinds of awful. Best track: Rock Lobster

Rock lobster…

I don't really enjoy the talk-singing throughout this album

It was okay

Found think surprising grating.. I’ve always liked the B52s I’ve heard. I didn’t enjoy this!

2. i guess I'm supposed to like them, they're zany and whatnot. But I find them just annoying.

not very good rock lobster is silly though

The B-52's are fun in small doses, but an entire album of them? Phewf. It's... a lot. Not very pleasant.

Don't very get it...

*Rock Lobsteeer*

The vocals can either be unique and eccentric or off-putting and annoying. While I like the sound of the guitars and synths, the songs themselves often go on for too long to keep my interest, even with the unique rhythmic switches that the band implements. Overall, the record feels like one that's more significant for its impact on the New Wave scene over its own quality. BEST TRACKS: Lava, Hero Worship, 6060-842 WORST TRACKS: Rock Lobster, There's a Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon), Downtown

Rock Lobster is fun i guess, but even that is novelty and gets annoying. There's a reason I don't know any of the rest of this.

Best Song: Hero Worship. No male vocals, and an uninhibited/chaotic/amateurish vocal performance. Worst Song: Planet Claire. Just a goofy start to the album. Overall: The female vocals far outperform the male ones. In a not altogether bad way, it sounds like an alien's conception of what rock music is,
