Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Cool, experimental, futuristic sounding but from the 70s. Thanks, I'll never listen to it again.
I know they are very influential but it was a little bit plodding on first listen. Maybe it will grow some more on me. One bonus star added for respect.
Out of 1,001 albums, I somehow managed to pull two Can albums in just four days. What are the odds? Krautrock can be interesting in small doses, but this was pushing it. That said, Future Days wasn’t terrible. It had its moments. "Moonshake" was a standout. Short, punchy, and the closest thing to a normal song on the album. But then there’s "Bel Air"—twenty minutes of what felt like the cymbal breakdown from "Whole Lotta Love" with some synths tossed on top. It was a bit much. Still, the album has a decent groove overall. I wouldn’t seek it out again, but I didn’t suffer through it either.
Can was way ahead of their time
Interesting album. I think it needs a few listens to get the most out of it.
Acceptable ambient music. Wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again, even subject to that caveat. But wouldn't change the station, so to speak, if this came on during my workday.
Pretty good, but nothing I'd say is great. I suppose it was influential because it looked much older than I would have expected based on the style of the music.
I don't think this is bad, I'm just not sure it's for me
In the interest of the album's intended minimalism, I'll just say... It's pretty good.
I actually really like Can, even though the songs are long and repetitive.
This was interesting but not great. This is a listen to it 18 times for it to click. Not overly concerned about it clicking. Considering it’s Thanksgiving it’ll get three stars. You are welcome Can.
It's fine
This had a good feel to it, but I wasn’t in a mellow mood and didn’t finish it
I'm more than a little surprised that this is the product of a German prog-rock band. Each track is beautifully textured. If only the singing and the lyrics were more interesting.
First track was promising, seemed unique and a good go at experimental/ambient music. I think it slightly dies off and the last 20min track is a slight disappointment.
Kind of the perfect soundtrack for a cold, snowy afternoon. Damo Suzuki’s vocals add just the right ghostly touch.
Never heard of this album or for that matter the band. Saw it was only 4 songs and thought “ uh oh. Here we go” but pleasantly surprised. It’s quite mellow and relaxing. Enjoyed it.
This has gotta be the most resident sleeper CAN album out of all resident sleeper CAN albums (of which there are many). I CAN’t give this any higher than a 3
It's too much for me, but I should pay some respect to them. I feel that I still need to have some time to understand what I listened to.
2.4 I thought the drumming really stood out, excellent timing and interesting playing throughout. Liked this better than the first can album we did.
Fav song: Bel Air SUPER COOL experimental stuff for the time period - really modern sounding and pleasantly surprising. These guys were waaay ahead of their time. Kudos to the drummer for holding down tempo changes so well in the 70s before recording to click became gold standard.
Never heard of this band before... Seems like proggy jazz rock kind of? It's pretty cool actually, the vocals are weird and super buried in the mix though. Yeah after a while the vocals get annoying with how uninteresting they are throughout the album. I like the kinda atmospheric proggy arrangements though.
my friend was playing this and I was like no way you are listening to can rn. Mid.
6/10 - Ok if only the first and last songs were in the album and they were each broken up into more manageable pieces this could be a 7 or 8. But they had to make this 40 min album into 4 songs. I liked the first song a decent bits still.
Better than tago mago I guess, but not much worth noting outside of that. It did actually sound pretty nice at times
Fine in an elevator I guess
Gentle sort of ambience, hard to define to be honest. I didn’t mind it at all, but it didn’t blow me away.
Bien
Pretty, would be good background ambient music. Nothing offensive or painful
This was cooler than I was expecting. Nice chill vibes and interesting sounds. Really liked Moonshake.
Sounded very modern! Thought it for sure was released a lot later then it was. While nothing stood out I thought it had a nice vibe to it. Weak 3.
was a vibe
Too progressive to be experimental Too experimental to be progressive
I was excited to hear this, what with the influence they’ve had on quite a few bands I like. Whilst I did enjoy it in a kind of aural wallpaper way, the vocals really annoyed me as they are barely audible. So ambivalent, really.
Not bad, thought I'd like this better than I did.
One CAN totally listen to this album and they CAN absolutely play their instruments! I guess this album CAN be your favourite album if you're very much into experimental stuff.
Mediocre at best
Interesting sound.
great album. came unexpected good and calm. Liked it. but personally didnt had too much to offer. (3.5/5.0)
Interesting Moonshake was cool
Didn’t care for the first track much, but the second was really cool, at least the first several minutes of it. Sounded kind of like music from an underground Super Mario level. I don’t remember much else except I didn’t like the buried unintelligible vocals. Still not sure it was English. One of many albums on this list that were ahead of their time sound-wise, but listening nowadays are just OK.
Sounding like some weird procedurally generated soundtrack from a video game, it rises and falls in time with whatever you're doing.... Working from home? Folding laundry? Cooking dinner? Walking the dog? Having another existential crisis? Everything matches, everything vibes. Its amazing. 51 years old and it scored my mundane life perfectly.
3/5
I mean I guess it's cool? But it's prog rock so like a 20 minute song is expected. It's just tiring.
Definitely felt like I was in the future
It sounds a lot more modern than I expected.
I was on a 4 for the most part through this album. But the last song dragged on way too long
Had some okay moments.
Trippy fun.
Enjoyable, if you're in the mood for spacey ambient stuff.
I enjoyed the first three songs, but that last song... Critics called the track "expansive," but it just felt like it was... meandering. And since that's half of the album, that's a problem. Top tracks: "Spray," "Moonshake"
It's definitely better than Tago Mago, their other album on this list. That one felt like a 2.5 and I rounded up for novelty. This one feels like a solid 3 but I probably wouldn't give it more than a 3.5, and I'm not rounding up. It doesn't feel as novel as Tago Mago but still it's probably early days of space rock. It's easy listening but it didn't excite me. Moonshake was the funkiest of the 4 tracks but also the shortest. I'm not trying to say it was better, but it was a point of departure that caught my attention. Bel Air has a few twists and turns itself, as you might expect for a 20min song, though I didn't really connect all the prog dots they were stringing together. Maybe I still don't have the ear for this kind of thing.
Ok 3/5
It was interesting. Not irritating.
I really, really like Ege Bamyasi by CAN which came out a year earlier. I feel like it has superior balance when it comes to catchy hooks and Krautrock instrumental passages. This album has a bit too much of the latter, making the album more of a jam session. Unfortunately, I can only give this a 3.3/5 -> 3/5.
Pink Floyd’s disciples. Was Syd Barrett involved? But really, this did remind me an awful lot of late 60’s/early 70’s Floyd. “A Saucerful of Secrets” and “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” both come to mind. Long, experimental, often chaotic instrumentals that sometimes build but sometimes meander until they find their purpose and sound. Floyd had more structure to these pieces than Can seemed to. The way I always imagined pieces like this being recorded was that the band had a destination in mind with certain points to hit but would take a different path each time. That’s kind of how I felt here. The longer pieces feel too long and too varied in their sections to be fully transcribed, written out, and performed and recorded. The result is interesting, experimental, and should be applauded for the sounds it created. But ultimately it’s hard to talk about an album like this. The tracks are so long that it makes for a dense listening experience, one that buries all its quirks and great moments among the rest of the sometimes meandering noise. I liked this album. But it’s one that is likely experienced once, maybe a few times but never fully grasped and understood. It gets three stars from me. I’d love to see what these guys could do with a little more structure. For what it is, it’s remarkable. But as for something I enjoy, three stars. Standout Tracks: Future Days, Moonshake
I thought I was going to hate this but it was a bit more of the accessible side of Can.
Better than the other one on here but still nothing amazing. At least it was shorter
Sounded like a 70s band just jamming out. Kinda cool
Groundbreaking grooves
7/10, :0
This felt like a precursor to aphex twin at points and it was pretty alright. Nothing wildly interesting but I enjoyed listening for half an hour or whatever. 70s ambient/super psych rock.
It was better than I expected. It was kinda nice and vibey good background music. I really didn’t think this was anything too spectacular so I don’t really know why this was on the list but whatever. I do wish the last song wasn’t almost 20 minutes long that’s just too long.
I tried to listen to it, but it soon became pleasant background music. Nevertheless an interesting prog/experimental/kraut/space rock piece.
Second CAN album, I enjoy this but it unfortunately becomes just background music for me. That being said, it’s amazing that this futuristic stuff was made this early. Certainly deserving of its place on the list 3.25/5
very mehh
🎧I’ve dipped into Tago Mago in the past and while I find it cool/interesting, it’s also a bit…challenging. This is Can after all, legends of experimental Krautrock. Future Days has a much chiller vibe. Not so busy. More ambient. I will be returning to the hypnotic 20-minute gem that is Bel Air.
Proggy psychedelic instrumental music. Really enjoyed spray which sounded a lot like battles with the driving drums making it energetic, found the other tracks to be listenable but less interesting. Impressive given when it was released but I don't think I'd go back.
On the long side. Moonshake was good. Pretty cool considering how old it is, and I liked the production, sounds clean but still "thrown together".
I enjoyed this, I would say it largely passed me by, but it sounded good. Definitely has aged well, would not have placed it as being made over 50 years ago. Not much more to add, very nice, chilled mellow rock album 3
Not my favorite Can album
This was pretty interesting. The songs had a real slow build which I liked. Something I would want to listen to again to catch more of what's going on. 3/5
01) Future Days - 8,0 02) Spray - 6,0 03) Moonshake - 8,5 04) Bel Air - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,38 (74/100)
“Future Days” is a fitting title - this album sounds ahead of its time. Fantastic drums. The title track was probably my favorite. Really chill and pleasant overall. I’m not sure whether to give this 3 or 4 stars; it’s around 3.5, but it didn’t really leave enough of an impression to prompt me to round up.
Bit weird. Bit chill. Can see why some would like it, not really for me
I guess in the 70s this was ahead of its time, but in 2024 its fine. Inoffensive and decent background music while I do other things
Weirdly forgettable somehow. I've never really listened to Can, but I know they influenced lots of bands that I'm very fond of. I got the connection, and I think it's pretty good, but it hasn't done anything to me deep inside.
Longest song ever
Good album. I actually really liked these weird experimental prog-y sound textures. The title track is the best. It was a fun listen, but nothing that moved me beyond a solid 3 stars. ***
Something different...much needed after a week of dross. Experimental without being OTT. First 3 tracks were pleasant but not really stand out, final 20min saga was where the album really came to light though. One to listen to again another time. 3.5*
Wouldn’t listen again but was decent.
Enjoyed this
Really enjoyed this
This album is for sure more interesting and pleasant than their other album we had the misfortune to rate, Tago Mago. Still, it's not interesting enough to be memorable and pleasant only gets you so far. Just minutes after the album ended, I couldn't really remember what it sounded like anymore.
Enjoyed this more than expected. Quite pleasant although a little too abstract. Unlikely to listen to it again but thank you for the opportunity to listen! 2.5
prog quite boring
I liked it. Interesting sounds. Quite experimental. Not enough to conjure a particularly strong emotional connection, hence a 3 rather than a 4, but I’d happily explore more of their discography
It was fine, mostly just very long kinda instrumental rock.
Really interesting to see another band that heavily influenced LCD
Ambient prog noise
3/5. The Germans really like their extended instrumentals passages, don't they? Thankfully, I like most of it too as well. It's not quite beautiful or aggressive, more anxious and scared, like it doesn't really know where it wants to go and just holds you there as well. Throwing the vocals way in the background makes it seem more like an instrument than something I need to pay attention to. It was a nice listening experience but nothing breathtaking, just an interesting atmosphere to wade in for the time being. Best Song: Future Days, Bel Air
Bit too airy fairy / jazzy for me. Great background music to drink cocktails too though
3.75
ganz nett aber nix besonderes
I'm at a level of music pretentiousness these days where I should LOVE can, but I'm sorry, I do not get it (except for Vitamin C). Like this more than Tago Mago cause it doesn't have 20 minutes of psychedelic noise in the middle of the album, but I just don't get it.
Some of their music sounded modern; they must have influenced some bands.
Structured but a bit chaotic, great percussion. 3.0
its like detailed elevator music. unfortunately i dont like elevator music. i prefer tago mago but i didnt enjoy that one much either. i think im too stupid for this because i just find it boring. very low 6/10
I did have to fastfoward this a little juuuust to make sure it wasn't just a bunch of random noise, but it transitioned into a very diggable beat and just for a moment I am reminded of the song Jungle Walk by Asterix. Then it went into some very diggable jazzy rock. Quite nice. I like em. Not sure why they are on the list without more historical context. Good enough I played them while I worked around the house and noticed when the next album came on. Solid 3.5-4. Will listen to some other Can. Which is why I'm here
I quite enjoyed side one, but the exactly 20 minute side two track was meandering and bleh. The vocals were buried so deep, presumably on purpose, but that didn’t work for me. Side one a 4, side two a 1, but I’ll give this a roundup to 3.
This was fine.
Very listenable but not really my thing.
Fascinating long form jam album with the final track going nearly 20 minutes. Hard to describe, but it almost reminds me of an extended electronic piece that you might hear today. Everything is structured and somewhat predictable where it goes. A nice album to listen to while working or relaxing.
Many people citing the last track as the stand out, but that one really didn’t hold my interest. The first one was my favorite. I had never heard of this band. It’s unique, but I eventually lost some interest and it became a bit of background music.
For ten-minute jam rock tracks. Good if that’s what you’re looking for.
Different!
German experimental rock group. Meaning fine atmospheric, background noise.
Ambient rock groove stylings. cool as a filler and background, but more a mood setter than something I would actively choose to listen to.
Background music
relaxing record
I liked it more than I expected. The drums especially stood out as excellent.
Sometimes you listen to something and go “this is obviously good and this is also not for me” This album did that.
2024-03-09...
This was ok although I didn’t really like the 4th song. Not bad.
Good fun. 1 minute 40 in I thought I was listening to Moon Safari by Air. Awesome rhythmic work - did run a bit proggy and would work better as an instrumental album. In 1974 this would be a great contrast to the trite Americana coming out in that era.
Interesting.
OK. Well, if you're into ambient jazz, this is a decent listen. Clearly talented players keeping it smooth. I guess you could call it somewhat experimental, and it's easy enough to give a spin to. But hardly earth changing stuff.
Whimsical, fun jams
Pretty good to chill to
Loved this one for the first half, but felt like it lost some steam? I don't dislike it and don't really get why, but I tuned out a little towards the end. Still appreciate it - great ambient with some flair 6.5/10
Cool moments. Not too long.
Vollkommen unerwartet moderne Elektronika. Köln, 1973???!!?
3.5 - better than expected
Quite relaxing surprisingly!
This was kind of a fun vibe! When I hear the term krautrock, I don’t really have much of a frame of reference so I assume it’s just very on the nose guitar based stuff. But this was much more nuanced and chill. Great background music that enhances whatever you’re doing at the time
First listen I was not vibing (but I was also distracted). Glad I gave it another whirl because I got a lot more on a second listen. It was fun but probably not something I'll revisit.
Very creative, even too experimental at times, but this is really ahead of its time.
This was well done "ambient" music. I didn't hear anything I would consider groundbreaking but I appreciated the composition, arrangement, and production of the album. You can just sit and let this music wash over you.
Deutsche Avant-Garde-Band. Bester Track: Moonshake. Hypnotisierender Sound.
Really good background working music.
Ok
A very unique and ambient album! As far as the type of ambient music I was expecting to hear from an album put out in the 70s, it certainly defied my expectations! The slow, haunting build up of the opening of the first track piqued my interest almost immediately. While it didn't necessarily blow me away, I found it to be a fascinating album!
It’s ok. Is it must listen? The residents, yes. Kraftwerk? Yes. Einszenten Neubaten? Maybe. Neu? Hmmm… Can? This doesn’t feel essential. 2.5
Thoroughly enjoyed this while I did 3 loads of washing. Background music par excellence.
Kind of a LoFi vibe on some tracks like Future Days. But ADHD jazz that hurts my brain on others (like Spray. Then Moonshake delivers a damn enjoyable pop sound. Mixed bag, for me.
Interesting album, could grow on me. Never heard of them before.
Chill
Not really sure, it's just ok. It's nice to listen to, but nothing I'd seek out unless I wanted a playlist to put me to sleep (I mean that in a good way). 3.5/5
Good and vibey but not particularly memorable on first listen.
meh
Could Can? Can Can? Can cannot.
palaeofuture vibes
good ideas but gets tedious
Not bad you know. Didn't expect it, but not bad
Background music at best. And I love prog rock. 3/5
Yes
Weird, but I quite enjoyed it in the background.
Only 4 songs on the album, seems experimental. Imagine it was kinda cool for 1973. A little jazzy, a little psychedelic/avante garde. It's fine.
Ok background music, but nothing to wrote home about.
Kind of like a jazzy jam band. Not many lyrics.
Perfectly fine - for what it is. Now that I've heard it I can die.... 3/5
It's fine. Kinda extended jam-out tracks, good for background music
As prog rock goes this is pretty good, and not too long!
1/4, 25%
if you want something to play in the background while you do something else this will work.
A fluff in the wind. Pretty good background music
Experimental.
that unnecessarily long intro reminds me of the second coming by the stone roses, or should i say i now know where the roses got that intro from. the album in general did a whole lot of not very much.
The first album I have to listen to with a song that's 10+ minutes. I have a long road ahead of me.
this ambient krautrock has appeal
3.9 - Jaki Leibezeit’s drumming provides an incredible groove. Some solid head-boppers on this but there are moments when the band feels lost, especially on “Bel Air” where the guitar noodling sends the jam floating somewhere in space with no way back.
Not memorable, but not bad.
3.5/5
okay but not listening to 20 minute songs
I'm pretty sure these 4 songs are the longest I've every listened to. Great music regardless, definitely good to work to or even just chill out imo.
I enjoyed the ambiance that was provided by this album, I think Ian MacDonald of NME said it best by exclaiming Future Days is "sheer good music and is perfectly easy for anyone with a pair of ears attached to their heads to get into and thoroughly enjoy." Best: Spray Worst: Bel Air / Spare a Light
I am so so sorry if this offends anyone, but this album (for me) is the definitely of background music. Even with the vocals. Not bad or anything like that, but I can't see myself putting this on in normal circumstances.
I quite like this. It's quite psychedelic, trance-like on occasions - lots of weird instrumental interludes, long tracks, and interesting sounds. Would say it's probably not as interesting as Tago Mago which we had before, it's I think a bit easier to listen to though? 3/5.
Only realised this was from 73 after listening. Fair play. Interesting.
Pretty inoffensive rock jazz fusion type music. Could see this playing in the background of a yuppy cafe. Nothing jumped out at me as great, however, nothing jumped out as bad either. Just kinda IS. Very tempted to make this a 2/5 on the principle that this has 8+, 9+, and fucking 19+ minute songs. A low 3/5
Aika kiva, tunnelmallinen.
3.5 decent work music
One of the main positive aspects benefits to my musical knowledge from our 1001 journey was the exposure to the OGs of ambient and electronic. This falls squarely in that category.
I find this hard to describe, but I think AllMusic summed it up nicely, with “hazy, expansive soundscapes dominated by percolating rhythms and evocative layers of keys". Damo Suzuki doesn’t have much of voice, but his singing makes the songs more enjoyable. Moonshake sounds like a pop-song, next to the others. My co-judge says this sounds ahead of its time for ‘73, so I guess the title is apt.
To me Krautrock can basically be categorized into two genres, the spacey electronic sub-genre that was popularized by Kraftwerk, Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Shultze, Tangerine Dream etc and the psychedelic, proggy, weirded out rock of Faust, Amon Duul and of course Can. I prefer the former, but this album had some good moments, in particular Future Days
interesting album, and finally something i can listen to in the background without feeling like i'm doing it a major disservice! the experimental soundscapes with more consistent music over the top were interesting, and i can appreciate music that pushes boundaries. nothing here that i personally plan to listen to repeatedly but still decent. favorites: future days, bel air
Nice chill, mostly instrumental album. When there was vocals it was way back in the mix. Mostly just coded right through it without it making much of an impression.
Atmospheric, nice, but no standouts yet. Lots of potential to grow on me. I'd heard about it before without knowing, actually, so it was nice to learn what it was. Kinda reminds me of Peewee's Playhouse.
Enjoyable, jammy background music - I liked this.
Pleasant lounge vibes on this one. This would be pretty great to hear while sipping on some cocktail that I can't pronounce or barely see.
Igualmente disfrutable.
This epic album is a long mumbling fumbling trip. It's weird, though, hearing a Japanese lead singer of a German band singing in English. Take a long walk, drive, or bike ride of exploration with this one, and do it at the changing of something--like a sunrise or a sunset. Or the first day of spring, or the last day of summer. Find out what your future days are going to be like. You won't be disappointed.
Groovy and weird.
Pretty solid experimental rock. Had some definite Grateful Dead, Phish, jam band stuff happening that I dug.
Sounding like nothing but itself, Future Days remains quite fresh. The recording does feel more like a piece rendered than Can's full occupation. Evaluating on that is imperfect, but does seem appropriate for the band.
40 minutes on 4 songs
Can Can can a more jam band album? Probably but this is for you folks that like 20 minute jam songs. It wasn't a bad album but not really my thing.
Interesting background music
I've played this twice now. Both times, I start playing it then I go about my business and then it ends and I sort of forgot it was on. It kind of goes in one ear and out the other without getting too attached to anything in between. So, it's alright I guess. Nothing offensive to my ears but nothing to make my ears super happy either. Also, why did I think Can was French? Turns out they're German. Whoever makes this list really seems to like the Germans. 3 stars.
Enjoyed the second half, track 3 was the best. Rest of it could take or leave. Maybe I’d enjoy it more after more listens.
I enjoyed Future Days. Vocals kinda weak
I think it’s interesting but just interesting for the sake of it rather than providing good to listen to music.3/5
And so continues the EP/album debate. Four songs? An ep for me. Still, enjoyable experimental stuff where coherent melodies sometimes break out.
This was fine. The instrumentals are nice, but the songs are pretty long. I get that this is more experimental.
3.75
Better than the other one. Still not something I'm going to put on on purpose. Best track: Future Days
Bel Air was very very Radiohead.
Pleasant, but I don’t think I’ll come back to it
3 Instrumental music with a good beat. It’s very unique
Meh! A bit wishy washy, nothing bad as background music but I wouldn't listen to this unless I was in an elevator
I feel like it took me into the second song to even figure out what genre this was. Which is saying a lot because most songs were over 10 minutes. Apparently this is in the vein of kraftwerk. A lot more grooves though and atmosphere.
Very atmospheric. I was very engaged with the sound production that the titular track Future Days didn’t even feel like it was 9 minutes long, because it passed me by with such ease. Listening to this felt like I was going on an underwater submarine journey, with the mellow vocals and groovy tropical beats. It’s quite a novel album. I would have rated it at least a 4, but I can’t see proper replay value.
ok
Future Days is the second album recommended to me from Can. Most of the album was hovering right in the middle between 3 and 4 stars, but by the last track I felt myself getting impatient with the music and enjoying it less. The music can be interesting. Can's music had hints of the Syd Barrett / psychodelia era of Pink Floyd, or perhaps the Nice. The album feels like it should be grouped with Progressive Rock, but a more jazz influenced version of progressive rock - similar to some of the work from King Crimson.
Not as great as Tago Mago. It was more ambient, less vocals. Still enjoyed it. Love that I discovered CAN.
Neu! at #668 just prompted me to go back and find the krautrock album I missed, and I can now say that Can's "Future Days" gets me no closer to understanding the genre, other than to know that it all sounds different. Of the options presented (Faust, Kraftwerk, Can, and Neu!) I prefer Can. It is the one that feels most listenable, and also somehow most experimental. It's also all over the place. So maybe it does fit with krautrock? I'm not a big ambient fan, but the ambient parts were ok. I'm not a huge jazz fan, but the jazz rock bits were ok. Overall, "Future Days" is ok, which it turns out is high praise for a krautrock album.
This album hits a lot of notes for a Prog Rock effort. Long, sweeping melodies with minimal lyrics that almost approach a Jam Band level of improvisation. Where this album deviates though is that it embraces some of the newer electronic elements that weren't quite as common at the time, making Psychedelia a major piece of this.
Cool album but most of the time it fades to background noise.
Can't
Super fusion fun.
I could see myself having this on in the background.
I like CAN.
I didn't even realize this album had ended. Weird, groovy music that works well as mood music.
I like the simplicity of the band name Can. It’s so basic, it’s somewhat startling. Is it a declaration of optimism, or is it a container of beans? Who can say? Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Moonshake My thoughts on this tended to yo-yo as I listened. I quite liked Future Day, but then Spray felt like a drag. Then I enjoyed Moonshake, but Bel Air had me checking several times how much longer until it was done. And then that’s it. Another four song album, which takes up 41 minutes. I guess with the standard 15 song album of 3 minute songs, if there is something you don’t like then there may be plenty more that you do. With albums like this, if you don’t like two songs, then that’s half of the album gone. Overall, I’d lean slightly more towards liking the album than disliking it, but I don’t expect I’ll be revisiting it any time soon.
Enjoyable and quirky, but backgroundy however
A lot more musically subtle than Can's previous releases and a lost less reliant on vocals. Overall an excellent piece of music, filled with countless moments of beauty, as is the rest of their catalog, and though this maybe a controversial opinion, but I'd put Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi above this album.
Atmospheric etc
Less "experimental" than I thought. Also less Kraftwerk-adjacent than I expected. Honestly it's almost a lo-fi album with some surfer music influences. The only thing that keys this into being an experimental German rock album is that one of the tracks is over 20 minutes long. But it ain't bad! I've heard worse.
Neat, chill, interesting. Def want to check out more by these guys.
Vocals were hard to make out even at higher volume. Boppin tunes though
Neat. Didn't find any of this particularly compelling but it was pleasant background music. I thought the drums were especially good.
When I saw 4 tracks at 40 mins total time I knew it was going to be something unusual! Didn’t mind it though, they were def on some shit when they wrote this
Eh, bit mellow.
Nice listen. I can't say I'm blown away, but I definitely enjoyed it. Great ambient album. High 3 stars
Decent, but probably wouldn't listen again.
revoir l’assaisonnement ça manque d’un truc
interesting, for some reason i got a lot of Santana out of it, despite being German
Too much insanity. Even for Can.
Not bad. I'm not a hip-hop person, but there is a bit of everything here.
Kinda cool, kinda weird. Overall not bad. Probably won't listen again but wasn't a waste of my time.
It was better than I expected and I have to admit, I enjoyed it. Sounded more like background music, but that's okay. Hard to believe this was released in 1973, even today it has a "futuristic" sound to it, at least what we think the future should sound like... I guess the future is a lot closer than we think, right?
Would have never guessed this came out in 1973. Seems like it was way ahead of its time. Not really my thing though.
Very easy listening.
I did NOT expect to enjoy this album, but damn, I kind of did! It was off to a slow start and my initial reaction was… not positive. But the music was actually interesting and far more contemporary to my ear than expected for 1973.
Some interesting parts, some boring parts. It was fine.
Not hard to listen to, but really a pointless inclusion on the list.
What a unorthodox album! Long invididual tracks that consist of hardly more than trippy & psychodelic ambiance music and about the same amount of vocals as the "Next Stop"-announcement on Public transport
Rating: 5/10
Really enjoyed the title track. Things got a bit shaky for me in Spray... This is not a kind of sound experiment I can easily cope with, I find it super stressful. Really enjoy the International influences and find it really exciting to listen out for certain snippets of interesting bits. Found Future Days really lovely pretty interesting and cool but also really relaxing. It's mad the contrast between how these different songs affected me. I also found Moonshake quite charming! I have mixed feelings.
Some pretty mad bits but altogether quite a cool album
While this album wasn't bad, it also wasn't awful. A bit mundane and repetitive, but not in an annoying sort of way. The song "Moonshake" is quite good, but unfortunately it is a 3 minute song on an album of 41 minutes with only 4 songs! This would get a 2, but with Moonshake, I'll give it a 3.
Interesting. Not great. Can (and krautrock generally) is always on my "need to check out" category but then I do and I'm underwhelmed. I think I just need to accept that I like 3 minute pop songs and there's nothing wrong with that.
They really said "Looney Tunes sound effects" during the third song. Brave, I respect that. Okay, this is definitely music to scare the hoes. Play this at a party and they'll take you to a mental institute after two minutes. But this is exactly why I'm here doing this challenge. Never in a million years would I know that this album exists without the existence of this book and this site. I'm glad I listened to this, because this is a damn ritual. That final song takes you to Jupiter. Did I like it? Hard to say. Did I enjoy the experience? Yeah.
Don't think I've ever wanted a joint so badly whilst listening to an album
Was pretty cool. Nice background music. Wasn't particularly moved or inspired by it, but I did enjoy it and would happily listen again. Relaxed, easy-going rock music centred around guitars and keys, with pleasant grooves and nice ambient soundscapes to accompany. Feels like something I would probably enjoy more and more on repeated listens.
Unusual but worth listening to.
Solid background music for working
Experimental, but worth a listen
Interesting experimental album. It didn't feel like there were any standout moments, but it had a good feel overall. Good background music, not sure I would want to listen to it with full attention.
Sounds like the official soundtrack to "The Elder", a movie that doesn't exist yet compelled Kiss to make a concept album about. This is meant to be a compliment. Or a way to suggest I'm glad this is on the list, I enjoyed listening to it, and then thought about the time Paul Stanley wore a purple headband.
Starts well with train sounds Drums Pleasant and nice Something good is happening It's all a bit good
COOL STUFF! maybe for 70s
Nice ambient background music.
Uninteresting but unoffensive.
Better than what I was expecting. Song 2 is a little too jazzy for me.
// Favs: — Score: Decent to Strong 3
There's not a lot to say about this album aside from the fact that it's pleasing to the ears. Easy listening with chill instrumentals and soft vocals.
I know that this is a seminal, influential, experimental rock/jazz/psychedelic ensemble, but I just didn’t find any of the songs worth listening to a second time.
Listened a little bit in the car with Pablo but he said they have better albums and then we just put on LCD Soundsystem.
I dug it! Waaaay ahead of their time. Obviously each song ran long and I get it, but could have tightened it up and progressed through them faster
Enjoyable enough, even though it's only four long jam tracks it meanders around in an interesting way that doesn't become too monotonous or droning.
Interessant, ich muss mich mehr darauf einlassen.
Props to being really fucking weird
Zeer experimentele muziek.
Kraut/prog/rock/jazz. BT: Future Days, Moonshake
Strange album, each track with a different feel. It was alright. ***
Interesting album, mixture of sounds and styles. Tracks not likely to stick in the mind but enjoyable and entertaining to listen to in background.
Highlight: Moonshake Improv beatnik avant garde jazz-band serpentine musical diaries aren't really my thing, but Future Days is an all-together pleasant journey. It would be right at home at a coffee shop while writing a screenplay on a heavily-stickered Macbook, masking the clatters of coffee cups stacked high, the hissing of the steamer, the buzz-rumble of the grinder. CAN's free-flowing movements aren't impolite or particularly memorable, they're just /there/ and aren't in any way meant to intrude or divert your attention. This is good study music.
I enjoyed how little songs were on this album but they were also very long songs. My fav was Spray but this felt more like a Jazz album than rock.
I didn’t hate as much as Tessica. Didn’t love. But it had a vIbE
good one, I was fearing it a lot lol but it was nice.
Fine for background music but wasn't interested much beyond that
Feels like the soundtrack to a 60s movie montage
This one was interesting. I’m finding that I don’t hate electronica. I mean, I don’t *love* it, but it’s alright sometimes.
Kinda strange. Felt like I was in a syrian opium lounge or something.
Varsin mielenkiintoinen uusi tuttavuus!
Very interesting. I had no idea what to expect and enjoyed the surprise. Very psychedelic, and ambient.
Meeeget lange ambience numre.
Quite trancey, nice sound. 4 longer tracks
