Groove Is in the Heart

This is so 90s. Did this define the decade? A bit boring tho. Groove is in the heart is still a bop.

No strong opinions

incredibly late 80s/early 90s, for better and for worse. it's distilled early 90s edm sound right here, so mostly worse. "what is love" is kinda fun because you can hear some origins of drift phonk here with the periodic synth bass melody floating throughout the song. "E.S.P" sampled ryuichi sakamoto which once again baffles me that this list does not include ANYTHING from yellow magic orchestra (but i digress). the hit single off this album, "groove in the heart", is really not that good. this whole album is somewhat unpleasant and frustrating. tracks like "who was that?" are cartoonish in the derogatory sense, and even rhythmically interesting tracks like "build the bridge" feel spoiled by the bizarre monkey (?) samples.

Starts very fun, and slowly gets more repetitive until it wears its charm. It feels like these songs are trying to hit the 4 minute mark like a youtuber tries to hit the 10 minute mark on a video with 3 minutes of content. The early 90s in music had no idea what it wanted to be and it kind of shows, The big hit on here is undoubtably the best song, and its not even close. Which is kinda wild considering that is also probably the most out there song of the lot, I mean, it references Horton hears a who and prominently includes a slide whistle. Overall it never really reaches the potential of its best moments, and so sinks into mediocrity. I bet these songs would go harder if I was doing dance-fitness classes though.

Odd choice this one. Groove Is In The Heart was a huge record, played a dozen times a day on every pop station, and in every club for months. However, the album? Personally, I don’t know anyone who owned it, and I’m sure there were loads of folks who loved the single without knowing the album even existed. Listening to it now, I’m not sure what it adds to my enjoyment of Deee-Lite. The single is as outstanding as ever – it really should have aged – it hasn’t – but the rest of the album drifts by without any danger of it sinking in or sticking around. It’s okay, but Groove is all you need. 4/10

This album is not for me. It has a couple 90s nostalgia moments, but that's about it.

No thanks!

Not for me

It's an okay album and I'm not sure it's proper to be in the list of the best albums. Whatever. The album doesn't feel timeless, it's very 90s and outdated now. Anyway, it's good to listen to once. Already had Groove Is in the Heart in playlist, it's literally their only hit song. Build the Bridge sounds like slender meme music, love it. 2/5 —————————————— Liked: — Groove Is in the Heart — Deep Ending — Build the Bridge

Kind of repetitive not very captivating.

Good enough for light grooving.

Started out with a banger and went downhill from there on. Songs are way too similar and same beat. Just boring and predictable

I want a good beat? Me too mate but you ain't giving me a thing If ever there was an album based entirely on pne hit single, this is it

As far as dance albums go it’s fine. There are a few songs that caught my attention with a funky beat but it’s never something I’ll return to. It’s just not my thing.

It's alright. I get it. Transformational and stylish. But it didn't do much more than that for me.

A lot of electronic music in the world. A lot of options. People obviously love 'Groove is in the heart and rightly so, but as an overall album, despite enjoying the funk-filled vibe, this doesn't even hit the top 1001 electronic albums.

Not as fun as I was initially led to believe.

Groove Is In The Heart // 2.5/5

Didn't like any of this.

One good song to me, the rest was forgettable and just not my style.

I was familiar with Groove is in the Heart, but not the rest of this album which is much more 90s dance focused than I expected. The hit single is far and away the best thing here and honestly I wish there was a lot more stuff like this than more by the numbers house music.

Big dumb dance music that has its charms, but this album should really end with “Groove Is in the Heart” because it overstays its welcome. That song is a stone cold banger though.

"Groove Is in the Heart" is a classic, of course, but the quality gulf between this and everything else on the album is huge. The rest seems a little mundane. Perhaps I would have liked it more contemporaneously, but it doesn't seem quite enough from this distance.

How did a tired one hit wonder get an album on this list?

A very fun album, the best is "Groove Is In The Heart"

Een lekker nummer, "Groove is in the Heart" De rest veel minder

Super 90s. I will add a star because of Q Tip.

Favorite track(s): Groove Is in the Heart

it's very nice to see how much house has evolved as a genre. groove is in the heart is some crazy shit though

... - ✨ GROOOVE IS IN THE HEAAAAART ✨ - ...

Groove is in the bin! Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ in part Revisit  ❌️ One hit...★★☆☆☆ (2/10)

Not for me

What in the wat

One hit wonder group with the 90's dance pop sound. I like this kind of music but these kind of albums aren't that special.

Funny, aerobics workout music

Repetitive and uninteresting Repetitive and uninteresting Repetitive and uninteresting Repetitive Still, worth one extra star for Groove is in the Heart

Can one hot song make an album something you need to listen to before you die? What if that song is the unbelievably catchy "Groove Is In The Heart"? Welcome to my TedTalk... "Can a Single Spark Ignite a Whole Album's Immortality?" The question posed, whether one hot song can elevate an album to the status of an essential, "must-hear-before-you-die" masterpiece, is a beautiful, vexing puzzle that strikes at the heart of how we consume, value, and remember music. Highlighting Deee-Lite's World Clique and the magnetic pull of "Groove Is In The Heart", provides a perfect flashpoint for this very debate. In an age of streaming and hyper-curated playlists, the single's dominance has never been clearer. A single track, like the undeniable funk and sheer joy of "Groove Is In The Heart", can be a cultural monolith, instantly recognizable, endlessly sampled, and a guaranteed dance floor filler decades after its release. For millions, the song is de facto Deee-Lite. So, when an album houses such a momentous piece of music, does it inherit that songs "essential" status? The affirmative argument is compelling in that the historical context is essential. That one song, in its brilliance and popularity, acts as a cultural key to a specific time, sound, and mood. The surrounding album, even if wildly inconsistent, becomes an artifact, a complete document of the moment that birthed the hit. Listening to the full album can allow for a deeper appreciation of the creative ecosystem. Perhaps the other tracks offer the necessary shadows to highlight the bright peak of the hit, or they showcase the artistic breadth, or even the limitations, of the artist that led to that single stroke of genius. The hit is the doorway, and the whole album is the room one must enter to understand the architecture of the era. However, the counter-argument elevates the album form itself. A truly "essential" album is often defined by its cohesion, its narrative arc, or its sustained excellence. It’s the entire statement, the fully realised artistic vision, where every track is deliberately placed to build a greater whole. Can an album riddled with filler, B-sides that barely made the cut, or clumsy experiments truly deserve a spot among the pantheon just because of one incandescent star? This perspective argues that such an album is merely a vessel for the hit. It forces the listener to sift through middling mediocrity for a fleeting moment of ecstacy, a task better suited to a playlist or a greatest hits compilation. If the remaining tracks are forgettable, do we truly need to hear them? Is the experience of being underwhelmed by eleven tracks for the sake of one glorious song a prerequisite for musical enlightenment? While an album like World Clique, for example, may be an undeniable landmark of the early 90s house and rave scene, is it a masterpiece of album construction, or simply a collection of tracks anchored by one perfect, gravity-defying moment? The discussion leads us to the classic "one-album wonder" or "one-hit wonder" conundrum. In many cases, artists whose careers were defined by a single smash often released albums that, upon closer inspection, reveal untapped potential or a fully-formed artistic vision that was simply ahead of its time or overshadowed by their own initial success. Making Mirrors by Gotye (with "Somebody That I Used To Know") or even The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (though a more complex case of a single studio album) are often cited as examples of albums that offer more than the massive single suggests, suggesting the public's focus was too narrow, not the album's quality.   Ultimately, the judgement rests on the definition of "essential." Is it essential to hear the full story of the artist, even if that story is flawed? Or is "essential" reserved only for the uninterrupted, sustained brilliance of albums that change the course of music with every track? The former suggests a historical and contextual imperative; the latter, a pure artistic standard. And perhaps, the truth is a spectrum, where some albums are essential for their sheer cultural weight, regardless of their track-by-track consistency. TL;DR Nope, but Lady Miss Kier is dope...

Dette var litt space. Ikke det verste jeg har hørt, men kommer ikke til å sette på det igjen.

A bit too much for me to enjoy.

Not a genre I enjoy but if you like this style it’s pretty catchy.

opgewekte muziek... maar iets te licht

wasn't a full album on streaming, had to piece it together, i think these guys were just one hit wonders, this didn't blow me away and even think the hit was kinda shit

Groove is in the Heart is a totally infectious, stone-cold jam. (I don't think I've ever been in a band with a bassist who didn't play that bass line at practice at some point. It's up there with Billie Jean as one of the best ever.) I was hoping, searching, praying for a couple of songs on this album that come close to Groove is in the Heart, but I was disappointed. The rest of it is brutally repetitive and just not that good. I'm going with a . . .

…why is this here?

It's main drawback for me is that it almost all sounds very much of it time - that is that it is not timeless... apart from Groove Is In The Heart. Also, the album asks for big beats and the beats feel very underwhelming for most of it. But I did like the track at the end that sounded like Streets of Rage.

Aparte de Groove is in the heart y de la historias de Towa Tei que no quería viajar no sé mucho más de ellos. Le podría dar 2 o 3 estrellas, pero al final me decanto por 2.

Very dance-y and late 80s early 90s sounding. Some fun songs, but nothing like overly amazing. I don’t know if this was a particularly groundbreaking album or anything, but it’s kind of hard to see why it made the cut. It’s good, not great. Fun, but not like overly so. Groove is in the heart is a bop, I’m down with that track.

World music for kindergartners

World music for kindergartners

Eclectic, but a bite shite

Very kitsch, but more because it is a product of its time than anything else. As a house album it suffers for this fact, because the experimental inputs disrupt the rhythm. Standout track was Groove is in the Heart (as expected), as it seemed to balance the quirky elements against the musical fundamentals better than other tracks.

No es lo mio

Groove in the heart is an all-time classic the rest terrible

I figure this was revolutionary and great when it was released. It is a bit dated in 2025.

2 Stars (5/15)

Quirky, but still one-hit wonders.

One hit wonder

One good song the rest a bit meh.

I really don't know why this is on the list

Electrónica nueva, de los años 90. No es mi estilo, juega mucho con los sonidos nuevos para la época, escucho algo de house con algo de funk y ese estilo más clásico que me hace acuerdo a la música disco de los 80, pero su fusión no es mi estilo.

90s dance music. Not much more to say than that.

Fav: Groove Is In The Heart Least Fav: Build The Bridge This one gets old really fast, it’s basically Groove Is In The Heart + some other songs you don’t care about

“Groove Is In the Heart” is an all time jam. I felt like the rest of the album didn’t hold the same momentum.

90s dance music. Fine record with groove is in the heart as a famous smash hit. But i have to say that this music is not my cup of tea. It can easily run in the background but does not much for me.

Doesn't deserve one star but reviewing this in 2025, the album does sound dated and very windows 95. An ok listen otherwise.

Track 2: repetitive keyboard riff and dragged out with "wooooaaahhhhh" vocals Track 3: repetitive keyboard riff and dragged out with "wooooaaahhhhh" vocals Track 4: You're not gonna believe this... Actually it got a little better to be fair, i quite like the brass on Try Me On / Smile On and the one with Q-Tip is obviously a big hit. Still, overall I didn't really vibe with this

Groove Is In The Heart is a fun song, and the only thing you really need of this album. The album has some really fun ideas, mixing disco with house and a funky aesthetic. However, the music fall kind of flat and a lot of it sounds like filler house to me. Kind of a shame, because the rest of the album drags down the power of their one hit song for me.

Guys, I don't know. Groove is in the Heart is an awesome track and instantly memorable. Everything else sounds like someone hit the "Demo" button on a Casio keyboard then said weird things over it. I can see why this might be good music in a crowded club setting with lights and motion and alcohol. Not a great listen here at my desk.

a ono, okej za pozadinu. bilo mi je bolje kad je odsviralo

Judging an album by its cover remains undefeated.

Didn’t like the album but that big hit is a big hit for a reason. Had no idea Q-Tip, Herbie Hancock, and Bootsy Collins all had a hand in that track.

It was groovy

This was a different world. This makes me sad to remember life before 9/11, the height of liberal democracy, where people could freely pop this cassette into their boom box and dance together as one. Now everyone hates each other and we're all going to die. Anyways it's not really good music but definitely sounds like dance music from the time.

Not a bad album, but would have been just fine if I died before I heard it. Beats were fun, but repetitious

It was ok...got very repetitive quickly

Lacks bite - couple of good tracks (funky, soulful etc) but majority of it isn't great, the hallmarks of the genre blend into the background here and sound pretty boring. Needed punchier drums and stabbier synths

Groove is in the heart is Terrific! The rest is disposable.

‘Groove is in the Heart’ is a near-perfect song. The rest of the tunes on the album were awful.

This album actively distressed me. During the opener, my recurring thought was, "how is this a theme song?" as there was no discernible melody or theme in the song. The album continued with what seemed to me a series of unfinished, questionably produced rhythmic ideas with Deee-Lite's — how do I say this without being harsh — sub-divaesque vocals as the focus. I appreciate the upbeat message and vibe, but "Groove Is In The Heart" is the only thing keeping this one out of the basement.

great hit, mediocre rest.

Not bad, but very boring. 2.5 stars

"Groove is in the Heart" is a timeless classic, but I'm not sure I've heard anything else by this band, even the other supposed charting singles. I guess the reason for this is that the rest of this album is pretty mediocre early 90s dance music. Lady Miss Kier isn't that engaging of a frontperson on her own, and without Bootsy Collins and Q-Tip adding their special sauce, it's pretty dull stuff. 2 stars.

Groove is in the Heart…ok cool dance-track and a monster hit.. the rest. Not really that exciting retrospectively

There wasn't a lot to this album, but it was fine. There wasn't a song that made me really want to listen more.

Some bops, and nice synth noises, and I wouldn't mind hearing this on a jukebox in some alternate 80s reality that I was living in. But I was waiting for it to end, and won't be returning, and Groove is in the Heart aint that great....

I always looked back to the 90s as the greatest decade, but I forgot about this type of music

Not bad

Meh. Groove is in the heart is a great single. Wasn’t sure why this album made this list and still don’t know. Started out ok but by the end I just wanted it to be over

2/5. 80s club music

STARTING TODAY!! REVIEWING ALBUMS YAYYAY >:) DAY 1 I have never heard of this album before but by looking at this cover it reminds me of Austin Powers a lot 7/10

Dance pop album. Enjoyed parts of it. Standout songs: Smile on Groove is in the heart Who was that

Groovy, but not particularly enjoyable focused listening

Seriously it’s just noise. It’s not ‘groundbreaking’.

Three of the songs had that same piano sound as "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch. I mean, for f***'s sake, I know that that sound was "in" back then, but now that kinda thing pisses me off. This is another album that suffers from One-Hit-Wonder-itis. Everything else is kinda "meh," except the "hit." A friend of mine who worked at his college radio, said "When that Deee-Lite album debuted, that song got so much play on my college indie/alternative radio station our music director painted the record with whiteout to make it impossible to play that track anymore. Not sure I can remember another single tune from the album!" And there you have it. The other songs are pretty much forgettable. Except the one song, which really was overplayed back in the 90s, the other tracks sounded the same. I actually listened to a later album of theirs "Dewdrops In The Garden", and there is a lot more variety there in the songs. I didn't hate it, but nothing stood out except for the hit, and that doesn't say much about the album to me. NEXT.

It's funky, I'll give it that. But it's also kind of repetitive and boring. Power of Love was their second biggest single off this album and it's a bit forgettable. What is Love is probably their best track in my opinion. And I still wanted to skip to the end after about 3 minutes. Groove is in the Heart was fun for a few minutes...35 years ago when I first heard it and before it became the most overplayed song in the history of music. Yes, it still has some nostalgia and fun to it but I'm probably not dancing along to it for more than 5 second unless I'm wasted and forgot how much I've heard it before. There are albums by one-hit wonders where I think they were truly something more than that. And then there are albums like this.

Dance music doesn't do a lot for me - if you ever saw me dance, you'd know why. Generally, I found most of the songs repetitive and boring. There were a few that drew my attention, typically the ones with the most "real" instruments (i.e., minimal drum sequences or synth sounds). After I finished my first listen, I really didn't want to listen again, but I did (since I'm committed to two listens each) and was pretty bored, hence the 2. Favorite tracks: Deee-Lite Theme (really made me think I was going to dig this album...unfortunately not much was like it), Smile On, Groove is in the Heart (Bootsy!), Who Was That?

Groove is in the Heart is the stand out track, rest of the album did really do much for me

Not sure I needed to hear this album before I die

Don’t judge an album by its cover … don’t judge an album by its cover … don’t judge an album by its cover. It’s dance music. The album isn’t amazing or ground breaking (is it?) or anything. Not sure why it’s here.

It has a couple moments but overall not for me.

I don't think this was it. It wasn't a dance album that made me want to dance, and the band is dressed like the villains of a bad kids TV show.

Jesus Chris. This is way too background music for a shop or restaurant...

There were a few decent and catchy tracks, groove of the heart was a great song but be as besides that nothing particularly special

This was the musical equivalent of cheap plastic. Smile On was basically a bad kids song. Last few tracks got a little better, but Groove is in tug Heart is still a lightweight 90s tune, even if the bass on it was groovier than the rest of the album...

i was listening to this on the plane, then got off the plane, and they promptly played groove is in the heart at the airport. what a tune. the rest of this is meh.

Groove is in the heart is a bone fide banger. The rest of this album is like house music dross. None of it had the heart, had the baseline, had the tune had anything really. It existed, then it ended. I as a bit sad about it generally.

393/1001

Heard Groove Is in the Heart a zillion times, never once listen to this album. Ehhh it's ok. Probably not needed on this list.

They got the attention they deserved for the record and their hit (Groove). There are some fun tracks here but overall it’s only OK.

Meh? It's not for me at all. My daughter thought I was super weird when I knew one of the songs (Groove, obviously.)

Don’t even understand what they were trying to do. But it didn’t work

Really were a one hit wonder. First song was ok but a mid pack from there.

Not my jam, but decent background music.

+1 star for Bootsy Collins.

Pretty sure I am Missing Something

Astonishing contrast between the Hit (with the greatest tambourine ever) and the rest. Couldn't wait for it to end.

I was between a 2 and a 3 on this. It started out strong. Had a good vibe, but wasn’t really something I’d chose to listen to. And, after some research, the lead singer seems like a cool person. Ultimately, them making me listen to someone eat potato chips got it the 2.

Not for me, but it's fun music and I could see why someone would like this. Feels like it perfectly embodies a blissfully cringe-ignorant era of 1990s U.S. club culture.

Groove is in the heart är en okej dänga men resten är tyvärr väldigt trist och tråkigt.

this album mostly hit as interesting parts that added up to a lukewarm whole. added a lot of songs to my "would make a good sample" playlist, but didn't particularly like, groove is in the heart nonwithstanding

It’s clear that this is a well-crafted work, but it doesn’t sit well with my personal taste. The samples end up sounding very repetitive, and the electronic drums feel terribly dated. Everything is very treble-heavy, lacking weight. It’s definitely not for me.

It's ok.

90s club/techno. Not bad for what it is. Not really my bag.

I didnt get this album

Fantastic album cover. Whatever the hell this is going to be, I just know that I'm along for the ride. No way! No way! I knew this band rang a bell. The vocalist of the band (Lady Miss Kier) sued Sega for copyright infringement over the character of Ulala from Space Channel 5. The original SC5 is one of my favourite games of all time - easily within my top 20. If this album bears any semblance to the campy atmosphere of the game then I'm all for this. Towa Tei's name is also familiar to me after a brief stint of listening to shibuya-kei. Worlds are colliding so hard right now. I didn't like this album much on my first go, though I've come around to it a little more on my second listen. The biggest limiter for me is the dreaded piano. A staple of dance music from the time, I find the sound horrific. It just doesn't sound good and doesn't mesh with the other sounds of the album. Despite this, there are some good cuts on the album. The opener - "Deee-Lite Theme" is a good tune. The percussion was a lot heavier than I was expecting for an album of this make - it almost feels like jungle music. The follow-up track, "Good Beat" is also a good song. The instrumental was surprisingly quite dynamic and varied, even if the song is burdened by the weakest vocal performance from Miss Keir - very strained. "Groove Is in the Heart" is the obvious highlight. The use of the slide whistle is surprisingly quite effective and I like the "funky sound". It meshes well with the songwriting and Miss Keir's vocals. All this being said, the album does drag itself on for waaaaayyyy too long. Almost 50 minutes of music is near-overkill for an album which is both extremely dated and of a constant high energy. Curious to see what the book has to say about this album. "Groove Is in the Heart" is a common showing on compilation albums. The band is largely regarded as a one-hit wonder. The aforementioned "Groove Is In the Heart" was a smash hit across Europe and the West. An eclectic mix of genres. The book tries to make a bit more of a case for this album than I'm letting on, though I'm pretty dubious of this inclusion. The music is pretty competent across the board and is definitely out there, though it's also firmly rooted in dance stylings that were popular at the time. The aforeaforementioned "Groove Is In the Heart" appears to have a bit of a legacy within dance music, though I don't think there will ever be a song with such star power to where it necessitates hearing an album of otherwise meager tunes. It feels to me as though this album and it's associated band came and went with little influence. I think this album is worthy for inclusion as a representation of early 90s dance music, though I wouldn't vouch for this album were I going on the basis of mandatory pre-mortem listening.

No es mi estilo lo siento mucho, es un gran album musicalmente hablando pero no me ha gustado

“Is there more to it than ‘Groove Is in the Heart’?” And the answer is a resounding no. That track is the sole bright spot on this album - a funky throwback that sounds like nothing else on this record and was a huge hit around the globe (the fact that it had an eye popping, candy colored music video probably didn’t hurt). The rest of the album unfortunately sounds like bog standard late 80’s/early 90’s electronic/dance music with the occasional strangeness (“Who Was That?” being a prime example of the latter) thrown in.

Fun, but not quite my thing. Favorite: “Groove is in the Heart”

Didn’t take. Groove is great but ..

Grove is in the heart isn't bad. One hit wonder.

Too 90s 4 me

Groove is in the heart, but it's only mildly in the rest of this album. It was fine but I don't plan to come back to it really

While Groove is in the Heart is an all time song for me. Definitely in my 1001 songs all time (if I actually had such a list). The rest of this album is pretty pedestrian.

You know those albums that have a couple of good songs but the rest is just filler? This isn’t one of those… this one is all filler.

"Groove is in the Heart" is a great song but the rest of the album is kinda boring. Like a watered down dance oriented B-52's

Meh. Not a fan.

Groove Is In The Heart is the only saving grace on this album, and that’s only because of its familiarity. The rest was far too cheesy early 90’s for my liking.

one hit wonder, not a one hit wonder album.

Groove is in the Heart is a banger. Everything else had some fun parts but nothing too memorable.

It's ok...

That's exactly what they were going for and they probably did a great job. Not it's not for me.

"Groove is in the Heart" is a romcom-movie-montage legend, but every song sounded like a vaguely less-good version of it. Overall this album seemed iconic for the time and also has strong continued presence in gay culture, but isn't something I'm into.

Old 80-90 elector music and it doesn't ring my bells

Hyper daté y a juste un son pas mal

Groove is in the Heart is a banger, but the other 45 minutes are only sporadically enjoyable.

Ich weiß nicht. Irgendwie ist diese Art von 90er Jahre Musik nichts für mich.

Groove is in the heart is a standout.

Ja, ik dacht dat dit een one hit wonder is, en misschien was dat maar beter zo. 2.3

It's pretty boring. The sax and trombone on Smile On are cool, and I could swear somebody sampled it, or it sampled somebody, but the internet is letting me down on this. Either way, grooved in my heart with that, but not the rest of it.

Not my music. But Groove Is In The Heart is ok.

If it wasn't so repetitive, I wouldn't mind the different and unique vibes. It could be interesting, but not for me personally.

Not a fan

I was bored about 5 minutes in. We should remember their single, not the whole album

This isn't really my cup of tea, but it is interesting and cool. This kind of late 80s / early 90s dance music was definitely important for the evolution of EDM and dance music of today. Honestly though, this shit just kind of annoys me.

Not my genre, but certainly stands out in this genre. By the time I got to the Groove song, which has a distinctive vibe, I was tired of the music.

Fav song: Groove Is In The Heart (random Q-tip jump scare) It's ok, some classic sounding 90's dance house music but mostly just quite forgettable, a lot of structures harkening back to the days of turntablism with the super long intros and endings with little variations. The Q-tip cameo was my favourite part of the entire album. Song nice vocal hooks here and there though :)

1.6 I just can't work out who this is marketed at. Is it for kids? Is it for people who are too scared of hip-hop? It's just completely, utterly shite. It's not overly offensive though, I just don't understand why anyone would choose to put this record on? I feel dumber after listening to it.

This sounds like how ice hockey rinks smell.

Yet again the question: why did I need to hear this before I died? Kind of fun, but definitely nothing special. Yes, Groove is in the Heart is very classic, but one banger does not an album make.

Groove is in the Heart es un tremendo single de principios de los 90. Altamente sampleable tambien, pero no sé si eso lo califica para entrar en este listado

Groove is in the Heart saved this from being a one-star album.

The aesthetic of this album is the only thing that I like about it. I’m always so amazed that people thought this was futuristic.

I honestly have no idea why this album is on here. Except for the single hit, the rest is boring and montonous

This is...not for me. I mean I guess it's not bad, it's just uninteresting and I pretty much tuned it out completely. I'm not sure this is an album I needed to hear, 100% was on this list just because of Groove is in the Heart (which is oddly like 120% of the volume level of the rest of the album). I guess I don't actively dislike it so I'll give it a 2/5.

There is something off and ersatz about this. Smacks of major-label A&R money trying to ride the house music/daisy-age boom? If anything the production is too polished to feel authentic. Want Maceo Parker on a track? Sure, why the hell not? At its heart is vacuous flim-flam. Groove is in the Heart is a cracking 1-hit wonder though.

Not bad... just super corny and dated 4/10

Love "Groove is in the Heart" but the rest of the album doesn't do it for me.

Great single however the limited ideas are spread thinly over the album. It feels like a bargain bin album unfortunately. 2

meh…

Beats and beats and beats and dance and groove and beats and dance. Awesome they have a theme song. I was a little sad that “what is love?” Wasn’t the other “what is love” sans question mark. Groove is in the heart is kind of annoying.

Too sugar gummy pop for my taste. Would be curious if anyone who knows dance music thinks this is an important/influential album. Seems very meh to me. 2/5

not smth id listen to but danceable

2.2 1x not bad just not my thing. interesting origins of EDM as it is now.

Я прослушал альбом 2.5 раза и больше нет желания слушать его дальше.

One good song doesn't make it a good album

Groove Is in the Heart and some other songs. Deee-Lite was known in both the hip-hop and club scenes of New York City, pulling from a range of danceable genres for their sound. Deee-Lite would primarily build on the early house sound, particularly popular among the gay scene. World Clique is fine, but not nearly as fun as the hit track Groove Is in the Heart.

This probably would have been fun in small doses. It's soooo dated.

Groove is in the heart is a gem. Everything else is mediocre. 1001 album worthy: No - 9/18

World Clique has one good song (which seems to be louder and clearer than any other track on the Spotify version? :D ) and the rest is really average to poor 90s dance. 2.

Did not enjoy this at all really - no nostalgia for this (before my time) and didn't recognise any of it. Without that, it feels really dated, underwhelming 90s dance music. 2/5.

This is #day117 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... sometimes, just looking at the album's year of release, you can predict what's under the cover. In this case, it's the 90s, so... house, alternative dance, electronica? You bet. But does this equal quality? Not really, especially given the sheer number of similar acts and sounds from that era. World Clique by Deee-Lite isn't an exception. I’m giving it a 2 out of 5 and, again, I’m honestly not sure how this album ended up on the list. Looking forward to #day118.

Not the worst but nowhere near good either.

I am definitely not the target audience for this type of music, so that'll influence my rating a bit. This is a forgettable album. The beats were good, but the repetitiveness is what gets me. By the end of every song, I was glad it was over so I can listen to something else. Is it a 1/5? Probably not, it's not like I despised the songs. I was just sick of them by the end, and it does have some good parts. 2/5

Groove is in the Heart brought me back, but the rest of this was background music.

The big single Groove Is In The Heart was pretty cool - the rest wasn’t as cool. Interesting and funky but not my thing I think.

Besides groove is in the heart, there's nothing even interesting in the albul...

Just typical late 80's early 90's house influenced dance music. Okay I suppose. 2/5

Groove Is In The Heart is a banger. However, the rest of the album doesn’t hold up. It’s also quite dated. Can’t recommend it.

This was actually pretty retro/innovative for 1990. A little funk, disco, techno.... The biggest problem is that the "fresh" sound only lasts for 1-2 tracks and then it's just monotonous.

Not the banger album I was hoping to get today…

Don’t judge a book by its cover, but with that cover, we’re already in 2-star range. Other bands have eponymous songs (e.g., the song “Black Sabbath” by the band Black Sabbath, off the album Black Sabbath), but something about adding “theme” to it really irritates me. Like it’s this classic motif we’re all supposed to know already. “Oh is that the Dee-Lite Theme?” I ask. “Yes,” you reply testily, as if I’d just bugged you to explain, yet again, which animal the flute represents in Peter and the Wolf. In fifth grade—probably around the time I learned about Peter and the wolf, honestly—one of my classmates gave a speech on “how to give a good speech.” And it was fine, but with that topic, you really have to nail the speech, which is what my teacher told my classmate. This memory comes floating back to me as I hear someone intone “I just wanna hear a good beat” repeatedly over a pretty bland beat. Beat-wanter, heal thyself.

I can see why this was popular in the 90s as it was very radio and commercial friendly 'dance' music. of course it goes without saying, it made one of the best songs when I was growing up, groove is in the heart. overall, good work.

Thought this was just a bit shite tbh. Groove is in the Heart made the other tracks sound so generic. NPC dance music. 2/5

Very 90s I dont love it

Okay dance music, I guess. I find the music to be very formulaic. Start out with a synth line for one measure, add a bass line in the next measure, add symbols then drums in subsequent measures. Different lines, lyrics and sometimes different tempos so the songs don’t sound alike. Ho hum. Not impressed.

I was hoping to like this more, as Groove Is In The Heart is such a great 90's bop, but overall I kind of found this album pretty bland and boring.

Groove is in the heart indeed

Okay. I have a head full of a cold, not slept well. It's possible I'm just not in the mood for this. I can't see myself returning to it. It's slightly irritating, but is obviously performed well. I'm not a fan of the vocals - too showy.

Generically 90s. Replace this required listening with a Now That’s What I Call Music 90’s and you’ll be fine

Not my cup of tea

Has my favorite karaoke song on the album, and a few other songs that sound like they paid more than $5 to produce.

dance music doesn't work for albums. as a compilation of decent danceable songs, this is fine, but it is not really an album - there's no theme, concept or link other than house music

Very lite stuff and I recognize a big hit.

Not much here. 1 good song

Not bad, but not into hearing dancehall music outside the dance hall. At the very least, I’m just not really in the mood for this kind of music right now, especially outside of a club setting. That might change if everything aligned correctly, but not being in the mood and everything else, I grew tired of the sound after track one.

Yeah, this is not for me - too poppy in spirit, and the music sounds pretty clunkily dated, to boot. Was thinking it would scrape a 3 but the second listen really felt like a chore, so down to 2 it goes. Fave track - "Groove is in the Heart" is obviously pretty iconic, and does seem to have an energy most of the other tracks lack. "Deee-Lite Theme" actually piqued my interest pretty hard on first listen - it has a moodiness I'd liked to have seen more of in the rest of the album... "Who Was That" was ok, I suppose.

Groove is in the Heart is the only highlight. The rest seems like a parody of house music. It sucks

Generic 90s dance album, altogether not very dee-liteful. 2/5

The combination of Herbie Hancock bass lines and house synths actually has some merit, but it only rarely hits the spot on the debut from Deee-Lite (three “e”s in Deee baby). It also does not help that Lady Miss Kier (not her real name) sounds exactly like Hanson cirka 1997.

eh, not my vibe, can’t fathom why i needed to hear this before i die lmao

Feels like they put all the effort into Groove and let the work experience kid compile the rest of the album.

Not my kind of music and kinda blurred together for me. 2/5

Repetitive dance/electonica. Yawn.

++: Try Me on... I'm Very You, Groove Is in the Heart, Deep-Ending +: Deee-Lite Theme, Good Beat, Power of Love, World Clique, Who Was That? +-: Smile On, E.S.P., Build the Bridge -: What Is Love? 6,0/10

Pretty inoffensive, pretty uninteresting

Whew I was in such a good mood this morning and I still thought this was garbage. It’s one of those that makes me embarrassed the creator listened to this and thought it belonged. The songs go on forever without going anywhere new. Just put the groove in the heart single on here and you’ve heard all you need Rating: 2.3

One uber-single, which largely represents the 90s, rescues this collection of the worst songs of the 90s from the deepest place in cultural history. It should be on the list of 1001 singles to listen to before dying, but not the whole album.

Played out after 3 tracks, nothing wrong I guess if you’re into this type of thing , personally I find it dull and repetitive . Enough with the electro beats already

Easily forgettable

Album 488 of 1001 Deee-Lite - World Clique Rating : 2.25 / 5 A notch above Electronica, though it is classified as such. If you aren't careful, you may find yourself dancing around a bit during these tunes but that doesn't mean they are memorable.

Groove is in the heart on onneksi campein mitä levyltä löytyy. Yllättävän tyylikäs mutta ei liian tosissaan. Kuuntelemisen arvoinen. Melkein tylsistyin kyllä instrumentaaleissa, vähän liian cooleina oltiin niissä. Lähellä kolmosta mut jotenkin en pysty… sen verran paljon b-puolella halusin, että levy jo loppuu

He ovat kehittäneet Hyvän Biitin. Ihan ok hitin myös. Heidän musiikkinsa digitaalinen poksahtelevuus ei kuitenkaan puhuttele minua. Vähän jopa hiertää.

Started off well but by the halfway mark I was ready for it to be over, by the end it was torture. Even Groove is in the Heart couldn't redeem it.

“Groove is in the heart” is the only one I was familiar with prior to this listening. Everything else…meh

A few nice electronic pieces like on "Groove Is In The Heart" but definitely nothing to come back for me.

It's not so much bad or boring as just very uninteresting. Groove Is In The Heart is an absolute corker though, so it's not one star.

sampleable pero lowkey boring. No me gustó el mixing, 4/10.

An ok album

Surprised to see this on the list. Surprised they had a full album given that their one song was everywhere but nothing else ever got played. Was it good? Maybe? It was groovy and I suppose it’s good if you like that sort of thing, which I don’t.

Mixed for clubs - booming drums - some sly grooves but mostly four on the floor. Groove Is In The Heart is a timeless gem, the rest not so much

Groove is in The Heart is fun the rest just left me numb.

I did not care for this one bit. This sounds like it was made on one of those keyboards they give to children that make animal noises

I would compare this to chocolate-flavoured Angel Delight, it's ok, but everybody would be happier if it were the butterscotch flavour

I state off finding it interesting but it didn’t go anywhere for me which is a shame

I'm not a dance/disco guy. But I did find this album interesting. Its post-disco beats point to the future of sampling and sounds often like proto-house. At other times its listenable funky dance. 2.4

Slightly funky house music. The one standout track is groovy but doesn't make the heart of an epic album.

🎧Not without its charms, but a lot of repetitive and cheesy bits. Probably one of the most 90s cultural artifacts in existence.

I’m not sure I’m sold on this. Even Groove Is In The Heart grates on me a little bit. It’s easily listenable but I could happily never hear this again and be no worse off.

Álbum bem sem-sal. As músicas não são ruins, mas também não tem nada demais de modo geral. Alguns instrumentais interessantes mas que não chegam em nada demais também.

fine, decent dance groove. Probably won't listen again.

It had two hits that are classics by now but the rest was not that very interesting. But I can understand that it was influential 30 years ago.

okay but not for me

Dated, AF

Feel bad but it is what it is

It was okay

I don’t like dance music. It’s simply not for me. That said, this wasn’t too terrible. I enjoyed E.S.P and Groove is in the Heart.

Makes me happy I didn't grow up in the nineties

Klinkt als een goede studentenband met een drumcomputer, matig dus

Once you've heard 'Groove is in the heart', you've heard all you ever need to hear. It has wormed its way into the national psyche via adverts and TV. It's very good for what it is, but it's not for me, thanks.

Me: What kind of music do you like listening to? Person: 90s dance. I especially love Deee-Lite! Me: That's great. Love that for you. Person: Have you ever listened to Deee-Lite? Me, hurrying away: I sure have!

Groove is in Herbie Hancock.

one groove, no heart

I really just don't like dance music. I can see the appeal of this and it's not a bad album, but it's not for me.

of course, i knew the big song off of this album before listening, but i kind of wish the whole song was as fun as it. 'groove is in the heart' is so infectious, catchy, and upbeat, it makes the entire rest of the album feel kind of lethargic and uninteresting in comparison. the sampling and production here is cool and i think the vocal performance from lady miss kier is pretty good but the sum of the parts here is just kind of blah. i really was hoping i would like this more.

Never knew who did Groove is in the Heart. Still not enough to make me care about this one.

Groove Is In The Heart is great! The resr not so much.

Groove is in the Heart sticks out like a sore thumb

A little weird, like spacey Devo - not really my style, but bad for what it is. "Groove is in the Heart" is a fun and recognizable song.

Interesting, but not going on my playlist

This wasn't great, but it was interesting. It sounds like a early precursor to something like C+C Music Factory, but without a catchy beat, and it looks like this actually came out the same year. I enjoyed the second half of this album quite a bit more, liking E.S.P., Groove is in the Heart, and Build the Bridge. The synth tick in 'Who Was That?' is familiar and I wonder if someone sampled it 10-15 years later. I can't place the song, but I'm thinking Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado, or something like that. This is not an album I'll be returning to, but I'll add the few tracks I mentioned to some playlists.

Maybe this is fine for a disco album...but the second Spotify switched to another artist on auto-play I said "thank god that's over." I feel like I've reserved 1-star ratings for music that is objectively bad rather than just subjectively, so this gets a 1.5 from me.

It was fine, just not my jam.

No one would have ever heard of this if Bootsy Collins didn’t join them for a song.

A lot of very repetitive songs, but this album is meant to be danced to, not listened to, so I can forgive it slightly. Groove Is in The Heart is by far the best song on the album. It’s the only one that has a nice thick bass tone

I kept wondering why this was on here until it finally got to *that* song. Dance albums are largely pointless though, they're intended to be singles by nature

I enjoyed it for a bit before getting pretty bored of the sound

Besides Groove is in the Heart there just isn't much there.

There isn't really an occasion for me to listen to this actively. Will I listen to again: 0%

A bit cringe but not that much. Quite dated. Some good moments too tho

Kinda feel this could have been good but is swamped in 90s mediocrity. There’s little parts of songs that start out interesting then just turn to bland. It all just sounds a fraction too slow and unfinished. Some of the keyboard bits are so basic they sound like when I have a go at my daughters kids keyboard. Groove is in the Heart obviously fantastic, and I dont get why the rest of the record isnt as complete and thought out as this song. It sticks out. Sounds like it was from a different band. An extra bit credit for that album cover.

Actually listened to this a couple of days ago and thought I'd already rated it, guess I lost interest halfway through the review, very apt. The introduction song was pretty good, thought we might get a genuine mix of jazz and hip hop. It was actually just a lot of 90s house music. Groove in the heart is okay, pretty iconic, wouldn't touch the rest.

Not really for me this. +1 for Groove is in the Heart.

Has a very 90s sound and it was okay in the background but this isn't my kind of music.

I know "groove is in the heart" but nothing else by Deee-lite. It used to be on mtv2 all the time so it's quite nostalgic in a way. It's by far the best thing here. I guess this sounds how I expected it to. No surprises. I don't dislike it, it was ok in the background but not quite my thing. 2.5

The hits are good, the rest are a lil samey

If only it could all be as good as "Groove is in the Heart"...

Deee-lightfully OK

Groove is in the heart ainoa hyvä biisi.

Sometimes you can tell when an older album on this list has one song on it that’s way bigger than all the others because it’s mixed 10x better and like twice as loud

Groove is in the heart is just about the only thing noteworthy on this album, and apparently in this artists career

Isn't this supposed to be 1001 ALBUMS You Must Hear Before You Die? Because judging by this choice it sure looks like it's 1001 One Hit Wonders You Must Hear Before You Die.

Dancefloor house from the beginning 90's.

Not sure why I had to hear this before I die. Just dance music, not bad, but not really anything that makes it stand out from any other club type music (maybe a touch of funk)

This album is very mid. Okay to have on in the background while ai do other tasks. Forgettable mix of ok tracks that gets worse as it goes. 2

As the retro machine recycled flower power for a new generation high on ecstasy and the end of the Cold War, it unleashed some of the most insanely upbeat and joyfully naive music of all time in the early 90s to spiritually balance out the dourness of grunge. There's one idea and it's not that good, but they pursue it to its logical conclusion and its hard to be too curmudgeonly about such a goofy album, all they want is a good beat after all, and they have more than a couple to share. I was wondering where the groove was, now I know: it's in the heart!

Behoorlijk Goofy jaren 90 dit
