'Itsari' & 'Canyon Jam' are very listenable & show what this could have been. But the rest is so completely dreadful that even taking these 2 tracks into account doesn't raise it above a single star.

They don't come worse than that. Started like shit and kept getting worse. Shame you can't give zero. Only track I was able to listen to without wishing the world would end was the last one. Fortunately I think the vocalist's throat has finally given up and it simply sounds like someone organising their garage. Heaven though compared to the rest of the shit on this album.Sold some 3m copies apparently..pity the idiots who paid to listen to this shit. Having said that..if someone told me I dont have to listen to it if i pay £$10 I would have gladly paid. Too late now as alas I'm committed to listening to every album on this site. Just praying to god there's nothing else from this bunch of talentless Wasters!

truly awful

No fucking way. Not even gonna rate this. Makes me wanna go postal. Fat fucking 0.

Never going to enjoy this scream singing Made it through one song

For my 500th album: my first DNF in a very very long time

Another heavy metal band, another "Cookie Monster Voice" lead singer. Credit where credit is due, I can at least understand most of the words. I don't know why but the murder/slasher/horror lyrics come off as needless in death metal whereas they seem almost essential in gangsta rap. I don't like horror movies so maybe that's part of the lack of appeal. If the references were pertinent to me, maybe I'd like it more? I know a lot of metal lyrics are very political but it's hard to take that seriously when I can't understand so many of the lyrics and it's some guy screaming it in a put on cartoon voice. The Portuguese lyrics in some of the songs aren't even a problem since most metal in English has lyrics I can't understand. Either the lead singer or someone else in the band has a "Gremlin Voice" to go along with the standard growl, equally annoying though. I'm not familiar with metal to understand the nuances between each song....after a while they all sound exactly the same. The songs inspired by the traditional music of Brazil are a radical departure from the rest of the album...it's a nice break from the heavy guitars and yelling. More found sound, this time gun shots. 13 minutes of gun shots over background music? I'm sure this "means" something. Canyon Jam is like listening to the audio of a Predator movie, some music behind the alien walking through the jungle and shooting.

No, absolutely not.

"Sepultura" is the Portuguese word for "grave" which is also a place I'd rather be than listening to this assault on the living. Or perhaps will end up after (if) I finish this album. So yes - the name checks out. 0/10 wishing for a 0 star rating.

an absolute chore to listen to

Well… after three pieces, I’ve decided this is NOT an album I have to listen too before I die.

Didn't get very far in. I really struggle with this genre, can't really differentiate one band from another.

Being a lifelong metal fan with a strobg dislike for the growling kind if metal my range of consumable music either in concerts or asrecords has always been extremely limited. I knew there was a world of music outthere for me I very much enjoyed the instrumentals and solos and base tracks of but couldn't stand the shrieking. I knew the band name, I knew the album art (fantastic btw.) and after 10sec I wanted to stop but somehow I kept listening. By Itsári I thought for the first time "I might listen to this again". By Endangered Species I started understanding the lyrics. And what a gem Canyon Jam is. This album opened my ears for a huge part of my favourite genre. Easy 5* just for that.

Best Brazilian export since churrasco. Fuckin awesome, if a bit long \m/

Love this album. Brutal, but manages to include huge dynamic range. The inclusion of more Brazilian elements elevates it above their previous work, but the songwriting and playing is also at another level. Some people seem to have a problem with the singing, but it absolutely fits and lifts the music

A solid 4.5 but I can’t give half stars. I love metal fusion, I feel like it’s truly one of the most versatile genres, and infusing Brazilian traditional music with it felt so right.

I bought this album when it came out, and it blew my mind. Listening to it again it's doing the same. There's so much going on, and so much atmosphere and raw creativity.

Este disco fue un antes y despues

I knew this album was gonna be a treat with a cover like that 🤘.

I listened to the album in its entirety for the first time, and it is, without a shadow of a doubt, a solid 5. Beyond that, it also made me wonder if I haven’t been giving too many 5s to a whole series of albums that I didn’t enjoy as much as I enjoyed this one. Definitely an album to listen to before my journey in this world comes to an end ;-) Favorite songs: all of them - it’s impossible to pick just one! Still, I’d especially highlight Ratamhatta, Roots Bloody Roots, Itsári, and Canyon Jam

Whether you dorks are willing to admit it or not, heavy metal and indigenous cultures have been trading ideas since the 70s. Metal has always been counter culture, and that includes being anti-capital, anti-colonization and anti-fascist. Everyone has the right for self determination. Regarding the music itself, this album is fuckin' bonkers. The groovy, distorted guitar riffs are probably the highlight here, but damn if those drums aren't doing some heavy lifting. The polyrhythms inspired by indigenous music on tracks like Ratamahatta are just fuckin' killer. This whole album is firing on all cylinders, its easy to see how bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot would take heavy inspiration from this album for their own sounds. Even if Nu-metal isn't your thing, give this album a try. It's such a great execution of a great idea, if you're a fan of music at all, you should be able to appreciate what Sepultura have done here.

The vocals are harsher than I generally prefer, but man, this has a really sweet metal GROOVE. Several times I started almost involuntarily bobbing my head to the riffs. The incorporation of traditional Brazilian instruments is really cool. "Attitude", "Straighthate", and "Itsari" are standouts.

It's both very commercial/as expected and doing something unexpected.

I love this album. The mix of metal and tribal makes this go harder than it should. So many good drum parts. Ratamahatta in particular was always a stand out, but I blared this whole album plenty of times. Closing with the peaceful Canyon Jam is a stark change from what preceded it, but it still makes sense.

Growing up in the 80s, metal was the sound of my oppressors. I fucking hated metal, with a passion born out of fear and hate. So yeah, I missed Sepultura entirely. In 1994, a friend in Chicago played a tape of Cannibal Corpse for me... and I thought, this is literally the sound of demons screaming in hell. I was playing Quake at the time; its raw metal music was the perfect soundtrack to twitch-hack limbs off of zombies, or get disemboweled by a leaping demon that was just about unkillable at first. Music to flood my entire consciousness with adrenalized fear and hate--fun! It sounds like Sepultura must have heard Cannibal Corpse, as well. Fast forward to 2026, and at 55, I can honestly say, I love this band! I banged my head to the whole thing, with just a whiff of the trauma Cannibal Corpse and Quake crystallized for me back in the day. Thanks guys!

Reminded me a lot of Slipknot. I liked this album and added all of the songs to my playlists.

Does it sound like Nu Metal? Yes. Is this bad? Yes. BUT: is it the best Nu Metal album ever recorded? Yes. Why is this you may ask and the answer is simple: the Brazilian influences! The percussion, the guitars, the Portuguese vocals. That’s what makes this record so special.

Phenomenal. One of the best metal albums ever. The absolute best of nu metal

My original review is all is need to be said: "Kick ass Nu Metal! "Dusted" goes hard. I've always appreciated their tribal, Samba infused style. Respect." It goes hard, simple as.

Rooooooots, bloody roots! This was part of the staple for heavy metal in the 90s, and for good reason. Listen to it loud, and let it wxplode into your head.

BRAZIIIIL!!! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 Até agora, dos álbuns brasileiros que ouvi da lista, acho que esse é meu favorito.

What a peaceful, serene experience.

I see you monsieur Dimery. Blague à part j’ai bien aimé, notamment les influences bresiliennes justement. C’était lourd et ça groovait.

This is so fucking good! I knew the whole record already but it's just so much fun and there are so many interesting things happening. Very cool concept, combining brazilian tradition with metal, and the guitar riffs also sound like some chants or mantras, just mesmerizing. Such an amazing atmosphere!

Definitely one of my favourite metal albums - but it's much more than that. This is as good as a concept album gets, it successfully addresses some big challenges Brazil (and the world) is facing - culturally, environmentally - in a non-cheesy way (it's Sepultura, after all). Musically, it works really well for me. Love the sounds of the forest, the rhythms, the diverse elements (incl. samba), the acoustic interlude... just a great album. This album touches me quite a lot, emotionally, and I'm not sure why. But it does. Maybe it's the unity between content and delivery. This is not an album I'd listen to every day, but when I do, it's just the best. Of course, if you're not into metal, or dislike Max Cavalera's vocal style (admittedly, I wouldn't call it "singing") this is probably not for you, but I'd still think the quality can be acknowledged by anyone.

ROOOOTS BLOODY ROOOOTS

I'm not the biggest fan of groove metal but this album goes way beyond that. It blends together these genres so effortlessly that it never feels like a gimmick or distracting. Ratamahatta is transcendent. and an excellent example of what I'm talking about. Guys, it's Roots.

This album was insane. Pure rage and energy is packed into every single second of this record except when the interludes let the heaviness breathe for a minute as it supplies acoustic jams with sick angsty chords, still rooting the metal writing. The vocals sound like chalk scraping on concrete, which I fucking love. The ridiculous consistency comes with tribal chants that weave throughout the album making the whole experience immersive. This record really kicks in my neanderthal instincts, forcing me to return to my caveman attraction towards this S-tier metal.

what an absolute treat to discover 30 years after the fact. Incredible album incredible band. Absolute banger.

Great roots music.

I've heard all of Sepultura's albums before Roots, where I kind of never bothered to keep going because of being distracted by work/school/other bands. I really dig the percussion and indigenous Amazonian influence to transform what they could already sound like into something refreshingly different yet still true to the Sepultura sound. Metal is good.

I want my metal to be like this... all the time !!! On my shelves, it is. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Monster ★★★★★ (9/10) Total reviewed : 246 Already owned : 56 Purchased : 13 To buy list : 3 Nope : 174

I remember seeing Ratamahatta on The Chart Show in the UK when it came out. It was the heaviest thing I'd ever heard and the video was amazing. I was already into Rock, Alternative, Grunge etc, but this was my initial toe dip into heavier music. I eventually bought the album and enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say I was fully blown away by it back then. I'd actually started getting into their earlier stuff and found that I enjoyed Beneath The Remains and Arise more. I had a friend that relentlessly played Chaos AD and it grew on me, which made me revisit Roots. Both albums grew on me and whilst I still feel that Arise is Sepulturas best album, Roots is still a 5 star album to me. I love the tribal fusion with metal music and I don't think it's been done as well since. The drumming in this album is so raw and yet perfect at the same time. Initially I missed the technical guitar solos, but now I wouldn't change the solos that are there for anything else as they just work. 5/5 A perfect album that I've listened to many times.

I’m still not there, but this is a good way to try to convince me to be a metalhead.

Absolute masterpiece.

Epic heavy metal album

A classic metal album!

Classic album. Sometimes it’s groovy, other times it’s heavy as hell. What I really enjoy is how they shifted their sound toward a more nu metal and groove metal direction and actually pulled it off in a convincing way. A lot of bands from that generation didn’t age very well, in my opinion, but this album still holds up. The way Sepultura maintained their Brazilian identity and incorporated strong tribal elements is a huge part of what makes this album feel so unique and one of a kind.

From start to finish this whole album is amazing. I remember picking up the tape when I was 16 and listening to it so much that the shit broke so I had to go get another tape. For me Sepultura is that kind of band that punches you in the face and you kind of like it, you understand that maybe this kind of face punch is A OK. I know that a lot of the reviews on here were like 'I'm not happy about getting yelled at'. Well, maybe think of it like this. Sepultura is Brazilian they started making music in the same year that the brutal 21 year Military Dictatorship ended. People were disappeared and it was just a pretty shitty place to be. Keep in mind that many "free and liberal" societies like America and Europe not only turned a blind eye to the brutality of the Brazilian Dictatorship but actively supported it and supported other repressive regimes around the world. Remember kids, self determination and national sovereignty only applies to white people in America and Europe. If you're not smart enough to be born in those areas of the world and instead are born in a resource rich region of the world you have only one right, to give up your rights and nation to global corporation to come and rape your land. I'm pretty sure that if I had a grown up in Brazil during this time I would also want to scream at Americans. All that being said for me the Sepultura album that needs to be here is Chaos A.D. Which was the album right before this one and is actually way more political and in your fucking face than this one. Since it is not on the list if you go looking for it you need to git it, but also you should go check out Policia the Brazilian only track from there that is another banger. There is nothing else to say other than quote Max Cavalera "Vamos detonar essa porra É, porra!"

> the Beatles As a metal fan, I've been aware of Sepultura for a very long time but have never listened to them for some reason. I now regret that. This fucking rules

I know this album is not gonna be everyone's shit, and that's ok. But it is extremely my shit.

woah really enjoyed this one

Fucks hard

A band I'd heard of but never really heard. I am so late to the party here, loved everything about it.

I was not expecting to to like this album let alone give it 5 stars! It was so interesting to listen to and will happily listen to more Sepultura Fav Songs: Straighthate, Ratamahatta, Lookaway

For all the ballyhoo about the melange of influences on this album, the best thing I can say about it is that nothing - not the Fugazi-inspired power-chord riffs, not the funk rhythms, not the occasional shred solos, not the timbale figures, not the tribal chants - feels the least bit out of place. All of it is different but it all sounds like it belongs exactly where it is. Metal Cubism. Bonus points for being an all-time great Weight Room Album (time your mid-workout cooldown for "Jasco").

Thought this album was excellent. I didn’t always love the vocals, but the driving riffs and beats were great.

Love it so much. Seeing them in August!!

Woooow, this might be the coolest heavy metal album I have ever heard. I didn't have high expectations once I saw the global rating, but it really surprised me. The melodies, the instruments, the power - exceptional.

What an album - I love metal and admittedly have given some other albums on this list an easy ride. This is top drawer stuff. Gutteral instrumentation, world influence, and features from icons of the biggest music subculture of the late 90s at their prime? Absolute gold. This is all killer and no filler.

a masterpiece in metal fusion... just so good

Sepultura left a mark with this conceptual trash metal album. Proud to be Brazilian like this guys.

Gd shit

Was honestly expecting to not like this cause i'm not much of a metal head and dont really imagine Brazil as a place that screams "metal" but boy was I wrong. really dig all the indigenous mixing and the drums and everything really worked for me. very pleasantly surprised: fav tracks: "Roots Bloody Roots", "Born Stubborn" and "Ambush"

I cant stand heavy metal, but this was brilliant start to finish

Wow/5 (realistically 4.7/5) Even though I'm a metalhead, I didn't really know what to expect. But HOLY FUCK! This album is so much more creative and raw than I imagined. I absolutely love it. This is also #69 on the list, and actually nice! Especially the aggressive nature of this album is what draws me to it. Since I'm a big fan of Arch Enemy, I strive for raw and deep emotions, hard-hitting tracks and energetic sound. "Roots" brings this out in an unexpected manner. The riffs are catchy and make you headbang, the vocals mixed with tribal sounds stand out very positively in a musical environment that's not always known for experimenting to this degree. Some of the songs definitely influenced later sub genres and bands. Easily Top 3 so far out of the 69 albums that (dis-)graced our ears up until today.

Ooooooohbyeah!!!

Ah, high school. Max's vocals are psychotic. Attitude is hard. Ratamahatta was always a favorite. I don't know what the fuck he's saying, but I love it. Kind of a Brazilian Jonathan Davis. This has such a 90's hard-core vibe, it's awesome. Tribal sounding throughout. This will always be a 5.

Full of energy and great riffs throughout. Absolute belter of an album.

A masterpiece!!!

This changed me

This was way more fun than I expected. So not my genre, but this album started hitting from the beginning and I held on for dear life. I'm now bruised and bloody, but oddly sated. Ratamahatta was a stand out. Great interplay between rhythmic styles and sounds. And I liked how nearer the end it was more about Brazilian indigenous music, sounds and rhythms. The 13 minute last track was hypnotizing at times. Rounding up because it was such a surprise.

Nice ideas and riffs

A really solid album. Took some interesting influences and when it gets heavy, it’s some of the best riffage I’ve heard. Great album 5/5

Man… maybe I didn’t get it the first time (Arise), but these mfs are throwing DOWN. This is a straightup hardcore record. There’s really not a miss on here. I think the tie ins to the heritage of Brazilian music does wonders for them. This feels like an embrace of identity. And it’s metal as fuck. I love this band

Nothing better than getting your album, being able to get it out of the closet andputting the needle to the record. As I own this, I'm more than familiar with it. Which makes me unable to be objective. I could say that it's way too long,Ross Robinson overproduces, it's quite a departure from previous albums and Max Cavalera isn't exactly Yeats or Neruda. But I've lost my heart to Roots a while ago, and that will probably never change. Both Sepultura and Soulfly tried to carry on with this formula but ended up with better albums ditching those inspirations.

Surely one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Down tuned guitars and South American indigenous music.

An all time great.

Back to my roots

Solid metal album from the 90s. Was expecting nu-metal ish sound but solid all around.

I fucking love Sepultura. Not their best album, but compared to the shitty albums I've had to listen to before I got to them, this is a masterpiece.

I loved it. I thought it was bad ass. It will definitely be in my workout playlist.

Kick ass Nu Metal! "Dusted" goes hard. I've always appreciated their tribal, Samba infused style. Respect.

Pretty sick metal with big Doom vibes. I love how heavy the guitar feels and this album accomishes a lot without ever doing too much to make the music unapproachable. All three of the first tracks were bangers for me, with my favorite probably being Attitude, but it was close. I even liked the pure vibes in Canyon Jam. Most metal, for me at least, starts to sound samey and around 40 mins in I was having a hard time differentiating the music. Still really enjoyed it.

Nothing more to say other than hell yeah

Bro im 30. Im wayyyyyyy past my metal elitist phase. I don't ever listen to it anymore, though I don't have anything against it just not my go to. But damn this rocks. I've been aware of sepultura for a long time and roots bloody roots is just like a metal standard right? But damn the drums on this are too sick. They really drive the whole project. The vocals also are pretty standard but they get some chants going sometimes that I can only assume are Brazilian folk/tribal in origin. Or they could be football chants i don't know but they rule. The guitar is sluge and chunky. Not too crazy and the 4 second guitar solo on a single song was a laugh out loud moment for me. I love it.

Essential groove/thrash metal. Very high production quality and crisp sound.

MARYLAN, YOU CAN READ MY BLOG'S; IF YOU ARE INTERESTED?, BETTERTHANHARMONY.COM, HAHOMIISM.COM AND, ABSTRACTOFMYMIND.COM

I've already heard this album but it was awesome. Love the tribal aspects. ROOOOOTS, BLOODY ROOOTS

This is three years before slipknots first album??? Was slipknot not innovative at all? This is such a joy to roll after having my I think I need to quit moment yesterday. Slipknot is like a top 20 band for me somehow and this is like Slipknot meets Korn but none of it is cringey. It is so strange that that can exist and I love it. The only thing that this is missing from the Slipknot formula is Joey Jordison but their drummer is phenomenal as well. The Brazilian influence and representation is so sick too, this is a masterpiece. Canyon jam didn’t have to be more than 3 minutes though. 5/5/5/5/5/5.

And I thought Slipknot went hard. Absolutely face melting.

I love this.

I love Metal music what can I say. 🤷

Et af mine sjældne 5/5 metalalbums på listen. Jeg burde virkelig have hørt Sepultura for lang tid siden

Instantly hear Korn and Slipknot. They seem to owe this album A LOT.

Fantastic metal album

Perfect, very heavy and noisy! I like it. Brain cleaner.

Jedan od najoriginalnijih metal albuma devedesetih

I pretty much expected this but Roots is an incredible album. This album is the second album in a row that incorporates world like elements but in my opinion, handles them so much better than the other one. I also like this one more than the other Sepultura album since it plays way more into the world elements than Arise did. The world elements, like i said, are handled absolutely beautifully as are the metal elements with heavy guitars and vocals which sound awesome. Some of the songs here i would not listen to on their own but they still added to the album pretty well. This is one amazing album. Best Song: Ratamahatta Worst Song: Canyon Jam

banger of an album

Roots bloody fuckin’ roots!!!!

Excellent album.

What an absolute banger. This album goes so goddamn hard every single song that I'm surprised anybody found out a way to go harder than this. Fucking incredible stuff

Overall: 10/10 I was so incredibly happy to see this pop up today because it's an all time favourite album of mine! There was something special about the Max era of Sepultura, and even though it would have been better if he had stayed with the band, I'm glad that he left after such a high note. What makes this album special for me is not only the stylistic shift from previous albums (thrash/death -> groove metal) but the addition of brazilian elements and contributions from the Xavante tribe. This album is a showcase of their love for their home country and they wore their influences on their sleeves. Many will disagree with me but this is quite possibly one of the best metal albums ever made. Fav Song: Born Stubborn Least Fav Song: Jasco

A great and unique metal album.

Certainly hear how Roots influenced a ton of metal bands that came after them including the nu-metal wave. I'm a genre fan and I really dug this.

Loved it

I'm surprised I still appreciate this album as much as I do 27 years after first hearing it. Fans of earlier Sepultura often shit on this album for it's nu-metal sound, but it still ranks as top tier in their discography for me. If you let go of the expectation that this should be thrash, it's a wonderfully unique, heavy, groove-laden metal album. Nothing before or since quite sounds like this with its heavy tribal influences, and the lyrical themes were far ahead of their time. Sure, the album is a bit bloated at 72 minutes, but that often comes with trudging into new territory and not knowing what or where to cut. I'd rather have this album be too long than too short. Rooooooooots, bloooooody rooooooooots is an easy 5/5 compared to the albums on this list.

Savage Sepultura.

Roooooootttsssss blooodddyyyy rooooottttsss

Brazilian Slipknot

A lovely marriage of old-school metal and the sounds of Amazonia. Lovely drum sounds abound. Lots of heart and energy.

Really good album, I guess less so if you aren't at least a bit of a metalhead. The production is excellent with a proper bottom end driving the whole thing along. It's long, overlong probably and that does go against it, but it is still a great record with very few missteps - i coukd live without Canyon Jam, or at least not all 13 minutes of it, but thats the only dip.

METAL! Love it! 5/5

This album deals with subjects of cultural displacement, ecological disaster, civil disobedience, heritage, and authoritarianism. The musical collaboration with the Indigenous tribes throughout this album, especially the drumming, further brings home these points. Every song is a powerful statement and I'm all here for it. And maybe the anger and speed of previous albums like 'Arise' has been traded in for a more groovy style, and the riffs have taken on a bit more nu-metal edge, it's a showcase of Sepultura not getting stuck in one place and doing new things. After all these years, this album is topical and a marvelous listen.

Ah yeah, I'm back in school, trying to be an edgy teenager by all means necessary, deciding that for the next few months of my life Sepultura will become my favourite band. And what a glorious time that was! Roots was, of course, THE album to listen to during that period. It's funny, but I tried to give it a go today, almost 20 years later, but I can't really go through the whole record. Roots is meant to be listened to in a certain moments in life, and I'm sure those moments are long gone for me. But the sentimental and melancholic feeling of having Ratamahatta on a loop in my childhood bedroom will definitely stick with me forever. And for that reason only Roots deserve the highest possible praise.

Derreta meu rosto, deuses do metal

bom para um caralho,a maior banda de rock do brasil. tem que ser respeitada

Pure raw aggresive metal. Heavy af, some great riffs and pure headache material

Heavy Heavy Brazilian Thrash Metal and I love it. Roots Bloody Roots is one of my favourite metal songs of all times. Everything about this album is great and if you haven't heard it especially if your a metal fan get it listened to.

What had always nagged me a bit about the tracks I knew - and quite loved - from 'Roots' was, in this and my personal limited experience, the obviousness of Sepultura cruising in the wake of Nu Metal, most notably the sound of Korn, but now that I've listened to it in full, I'm happy to bury that thought. This is a legit album, the fantastic overlapping section of a Death/Nu/FromBrazil Venn diagramm. Fuck yeah!

This was amazing, with an awesome tribal closer. Definitely early alt / groove metal and I am all for it. I also liked the couple of instrumental interludes they had near the end, same with the acoustic driven tracks near the end as well.

Fantastic, love the intensity. I'm just going to disregard the last "song" entirely.

I think there’s a valid case to made that Roots is the greatest metal album ever made, aside from Black Sabbath’s Paranoid. The investigation of Brazilian culture both sonically and lyrically are ambitious but largely successful, and it helps that Sepultura were metal masters by the time they made this. From a musical standpoint, I think this is as good as metal was in ’96. The gutturals, the down-tuned riffs, the rhythm section that incorporates Latin grooves – all of it is top notch, and still sounds impressive today. While it didn’t invent nu-metal, it’s definitely coming to the same conclusions as Korn did, just from a radically different angle. But I also find Sepultura’s approach to this sound more sensible? more logical? At least more interesting. But I’m also a nu-metal apologist, so take it with a grain of salt. The only reason anyone would hate this I think is because extreme metal in any sense of the word is too scary for their ears, or because they just find metal lyrics a bit silly. And while that’s fair, thankfully, I was introduced to pig squeals, gutturals, and ridiculous lyrics when I was 12 listening to screamo bands before I even dove into “real” metal, so I’m actually upset more extreme metal isn’t on this list. But at least we have Roots, and Roots is a high water mark.

This is a true gem. Had no idea this was out there

This shit fuckin RIIIPS.

Heavy as hell, I think this would have broken my head a bit if I had heard it when I was 14! However, with more knowledge of heavy and extreme music, I now love it and value its place in the progression. A clear influence on Korn, Slipknot, and many other bands I love, perhaps the most interesting and comparable being the wonderful Alien Weaponry - who would hopefully see the compliment in being thought of as a Maori Sepultura!

An extraordinary recording - reactions to this ranged from glee to terror. The music makes you want to duck out the way from the aural assault and then punch the air with the sheer exuberance of it all. The addition of traditional Brazilian music adds depth and this genuinely stands out. Thrilling, really, and a vital album.

Groove y nu metal. Me compro el vinilo, venga.

Max himself didn't want to lose the connection to his ancestral roots. Especially, his later works with Soulfly expanded even deeper Fav Track: Lookaway

Fantastic album that I ahve listened to many of the songs from but never the entire album

Wow. Was für ein Metal-Album! Großartig!

Finally some good stuff! Incredible album! Just don't care for canyon jam.

Loved this, raw, exciting, innovative

Great metal album. Will need to hear more of them

Brazilian metal is obviously some of the most metal out there, and this album in particular has some of the best riffs. It is also cool that you can trace the influence of Portuguese and Brazilian music styles in many of the songs. The second half of the album gets a bit too indie, but I'm going to ignore that and just give it 5 stars.

Oh so THIS is where all my favorite metal tropes came from

Best one yet holy shit

5 sterren.

Holy shit

This was one of my first metal records. Max has been a large influence on me since the 90s. This record is an easy 5 stars and should be considered one of few non American or European classics.

MAKES ME WANT TO FUCK!!!!!!!!

Back when I was an angry little 12/13 year old, I absolutely loved Soulfly. I never managed to get into the frontman's preceding band, Sepultura though. I don't know what it was that made Sepultura less accessible for me. Maybe the higher density of sound, maybe the lesser amount of groove, or the growls instead of shouts as with Soulfly. Whatever the case, 20 years later, I am a lot less angry and definitely enjoyed the musical juggernaut of an album that is Roots. The highlight of the album is probably the fantastic drumming which seems infused with ethnic rhythms. Somewhat less convincing are the vocals, which nonetheless absolutely fulfill their purpose. The last couple of tracks peter out a bit weakly compared to the beginning of the album. On the whole, this album was a fantastic ride though, encompassing everything metal is supposed to be and then just a little bit more - ethnic influences to make everything more interesting.

Not my favorite genre, but WOW, Sepultura is so good. As a brazilian, hearing a berimbau and many other cultural references in a heavy metal album is amazing.

Fire ass drums

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Groove y nu metal. Me compro el vinilo, venga.

ROOOTTTTTTSSS! BLOODY, ROOOOOOOTS!!!

Goed hard. En dan dat laatste nummer, wat iets apart is, maar toch goed op een of andere manier

Not Sepultura's best album it's still really great. This gives me hope that their other albums will be on the list of 1001 albums you have to listen to. Roots really show a drift from Sepultura's previous style but manages to keep the aggressiveness. There's some really great songs like Roots Bloody Roots and Cut-throat. The creativeness and the production is impressive.

Heavy. Not my favorite heavy band, but a definite classic by one of the greats.

Shit slaps.

Prime example of why first impressions are important because after the first two songs I almost dropped the album, but I decided to give it some grace and I’m glad that I did. Really cool experimental fusion album that was executed pretty solidly all things considered.

I think that this might be the first metal album assigned to me. I own a box set of the albums with Max Cavalera, so this is not new to me as an album. I'm not generally a fan of this more groove style almost new metal style of album, but this is definitely an exception. (Listening to the album again leads me to recognize that the thrash roots of the band are still evident and there are sludgy elements and influences from hardcore that distinguish this record from new metal.) The record has a moody and even apocalyptic tone to it. It's slower than the band's earlier records but that only contributes to mood and intensity. It really is an effort to use the genre as a condemnation of the long history of colonial violence. I really love the additional percussion that often makes this album work so well. I admire the attempt to incorporate indigenous elements, but I'm not always sure that it coheres all the time. It's definitely interesting though.

Didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did. Proper heavy nu-metal stuff, with lyrics about things that actually matter like the environment instead of just "I hate my stepdad". The production is insane, the use of traditional Brazilian instruments amongst the chaos grounds the whole thing, and I found myself properly head-banging. Awesome! Favourite track: Lookaway Least favourite track: Jasco

energetic, powerful. a bit long?

I've listened to this album before but tbh I kinda forgot about this band and it was nice to rediscover them

Omdat het cool was niet omdat ik heb genoten

Pretty unique with some of the Brazilian spin, cool riffs, I could definitely listen to more of this.

I remember the album cover but never really listened to it. It's good. If you don't like metal you probably won't like it. I'm not sure what version of metal it goes into, seriously there are 100 kinds of metal. I'm thinking because you can clearly hear the lyrics, even though you might not be able to understand the language, Sepultura is from Brazil. They hit hard and fast and not knowing the language for some of the songs doesn't matter. Solid album. It makes me wish I was younger and seeing them live from the pit. Just a great metal album.

очень хорошо. сохранил.

I know the move away from thrash and dalliance with nu-metal turned off many Sepultura fans but I discovered them at a very nu-metal time of my life, so it seemed fine to me at the time. The seams do show with certain songs, like Lookaway which is incredibly dated, complete with Jonathan Davis and Mike Patton assists. Igor's fills on Attitude rock my ass. Dictatorshit leans into Max's hardcore influences and I wish there was more of it.

Of all the possible genres available, I was pleasantly surprised to find Brazilian metal on the list today. I’m not normally a fan of the guttural screaming singing style - I get a sort of misophonic reaction similar to hearing someone retching. However, in the case of vocalist and lead guitarist Max Cavalera, it’s not too bad and I can actually make out most of what he’s singing without using a lyrics guide. Aside from the vocals, the music is great, incorporating traditional Brazilian and tribal sounds with the usual doom laden guitars and bass lines. I particularly enjoyed the tracks featuring Xavente chants recorded on location in the Brazilian interior. This is definitely a case of cultural celebration rather than appropriation giving this album a unique atmosphere. Great stuff!

I’ve never really given Sepultura a chance. I must have heard something years ago and decided I didn’t like them, and just never really revisited. And while I’m still not a huge fan of the vocals - wow, I finally understand why they’re such a beloved metal band! They incorporate sounds atypical to the genre without losing anything that makes them metal as fuck. Would I listen to this all the time? I would not. But can I see myself sometime down the road, if I’m in the right mood, popping this on? Hell yes I can.

Right bloody onslaught. Ratamahatta was like a brazilian salsa dance off. Roots bloody roots is class. Full album doesnt know when to stop. Dynamically its just loud start to finish.

The music is good and the album as a whole is great! The screaming shouting vocals dont do anything for me I get it works for this music, but just not my vibe!

I liked it rbh. Gutteral throaty nonsense. With ballsy music. Guts, throat and balls. Think rhats how they play their instruments I liked the songs i couldnt understand the lyrics of more, bit like Rammstein. When I understand the lyrics theyre a bit shite. Parts sounded Korn esque. Which i appreciated. Full album is too much but the odd song would be right on.

Avoided this for a long time (except for the title track) due to my understanding that it indulged in “nu metal” tendencies. Pleasantly surprised by the listen. The Brazilian rhythms were sublime, and the grooves were on point. I wish Jonathan Davis didn’t get a track, and I may still prefer the earlier stuff, but nevertheless, this is a surprisingly easy listen. Also, the drum sound reminds me of Helmet.

Heavy, man.

Punishing groove/nu metal. The heavy, authentic Brazillian roots influences puts it above others of its time. A touch too long but, this slaps hard AF

This was cool! I personally would have preferred if it was slightly less heavy metal and slightly more Brazilian but I still enjoyed it!

This album stands out among the "nu metal" scene of the time. The incorporation of tribal rhythms and live recording with real tribes gives this an authenticity. Album art is insane.

the vocals are bad but the rest is too good for this to get rated a 3

90’s Nu Metal ⭐️Ratamahatta

This was an amazing album, this totally took me by surprise. I've been wanting to get more into these guys since I heard their Arise album (252 albums ago.) The vocals are incredible, they're just filled with pure anguish and anger. This album has some cool Brazilian tribal music elements, I really like the touch of it, always great when a metal band decides to stick it to the purists and does what they want with their sound (in this case a tribal-metal fusion.) And now to address the elephant in the room, the riffs. The groovy mid-tempo riffs featured on the album emit just plain meanness (like in "Straighthate" and "Endangered Species.") These guys sure do know how to make a riff or two. This was an enjoyable listen and it didn't seem to drag which is out of the norm for a first listen of a 70 minute album. Only the final track I didn't like, but I liked just about the rest. Highlight Song/s: "Roots Bloody Roots", "Attitude", "Cut-Throat" and "Straighthate"

Groovy!

I've heard bits and pieces from this album but never the whole thing before. I rather like it.

There are fillers and nobody needs a 13 minutes jam at the end but this album is a banger.

I put this on at work and then successfully dealt with a nine page spreadsheet, all hail Sepultura. This was one of the better metal albums I’ve heard and I’ll listen to it again.

Good stuff, tribal metal sound Not sure if I had a favorite track but the whole album was consistent and awesome.

The music hits. Vocally, so far it seems like it’s a bit of a stretch to stress those vocal cords out as much as this guy does. He doesn’t have the right sound coming out. It’s just like having your dad yell at you because he thinks you’re gay but you just really like Taylor Swift’s music. After Ratamhatta or however you spell it, the album changed my mind. The vocals work, it takes some adjustment to my ear holes but it works.

Some interesting sounds mixed in. Overall I liked it.

3.5 - Good

First listen for me. Thought it was great. Some pretty great thrash - I’ll probably go and listen to their earlier albums.

Great metal album with a lot of weird but unique elements that kept every track interesting. The whole eerie, ominous vibe surrounding this album was lowkey enjoyable. 7.5/10, Favorite Song: Ambush

Good noise

I generally listen to my albums from here whilst completing admin at work, so Sepultura was a bit of a blast! I love metal, and will definitely listen to them again at the gym 💪 Great stuff

When listening to a list like this, you need to know that you will run into styles that you just don't like, and it's important to be able to put aside enough bias to at least recognize what makes it good and why it's on this list. This is album falls into that category for me. I don't like nu metal. I do recognize that this is a good album, and pretty unique and innovative for including a lot of Brazilian influences in their music. And "Jasco" kind of proves my point. When they strip the music back like that, I really like it. "Jasco" was my favorite song up to that point in the album, and then "Itsári" re-used the same idea but brought the cultural influence from other parts of the album and made it central to the song. Yeah, definitely not an album for me, but I can recognize this is really quite good. If I was into nu metal, this probably gets a really high rating for me, but it ends up falling right on the line of 3 stars and 4 stars. Favorite Song(s): Itsári

The first three songs in themselves justify a high rating, Great album

What a pleasant surprise to see Sepultura made this list! This whole album is awesome. High energy, loud, gritty, and catchy. I typically jam to songs on this album at the gym, it's a good one. 8/10

you can hear the pure rage and it's fire fav song: Dictatorshit

Aww yea AAA

Awesome. A precursor for what would come in Soulfly.

Too many dumb motherfuckers in here eating genres they don't like. Stop being a cunt and just don't review it, it's ignorant, and you are worthless.

The combination of heavy metal and traditional Brazilian music is surprisingly effective, and shines through the most in tracks like Ratamahatta. Roots Bloody Roots is also pretty heavy and the album ended nicely with an oddly satisfying Canyon Jam.

Current mood of me dealing with my fur baby entering her terrible 2's

The first time I listened to this all the way through, maybe a few years ago, I thought it was a pretty good nu metal album. Now I would say it’s just a good album overall, without the qualifier. It’s got enough bad nu metal qualities to hold it down a bit, but the cool outweighs the uncool. There’s a lot of stuff out there a lot worse than this.

Ok this one's actually cool. The other sepultura supposedly had some tribal? influences, but I couldn't hear it, just generic thrash. This is far from generic with interesting ass percussion rhythms and weird touches. Korn was obviously listening to this a lot. Oom cha cha om da bigalapa or whatever. Lyrics still corny as hell though.

honestly an essential metal record. so much of metal in the past thirty years sounds the way it does because of this album.

One of those 90's "lets max out the CD" albums so it's overlong but damn, still destroys. Chaos AD is better but this still rules

Finally this band really clicked with me. Raw aggression, clear message it conveys and the charming lack of good lyrics just hits the spot. After hit filled start the album sadly has some filler in the mid section and the songs slightly blend to one another, but it picks back up towards the end and delivers some of it's best songs in the the last third of the record. In a list that desperately lacks non UK/USA bands, this was a welcomed addition.

This album is fucking awesome I love sepultura 9/10

What a brutal album! Loved it!

People disliking this album are weak of spirit and character

I am very satisfied with the amount of metal on this list. The mix-in of natural sounds is pretty neat!

Very good for them!!!

ROOOOOTS BLOODY ROOOOOTS. This slaps. Could do without the final track, which I've knocked a star off for given it's a fair chunk of the run time but the rest is great thrash with more than enough little flourishes to keep it interesting and engaging.

Really enjoyed the music and the interesting techniques and sounds from indigenous Brazilian music. A great work of art.

Metal albums are rare on this list, so any time I get one, I'm happy. This one is particularly good. A nice fusion of Nu-Metal and Brazilian music. The percussion is insane.

I mostly liked this - I guess I was in the mood! I enjoyed it more than our last Sepultura album. This kind of metal is bit heavier than I usually listen to! I don't know why, but in parts the lyrics with the vocal style gave me the giggles - I know its supposed to be serious, but honestly it sounds a bit silly to me.

I like them, but an entire album is a bit much for me (even though i got this on vinyl)

Sweet 90s metal record when those were in short supply.

This was a surprise, and a refreshing change of mood. Very interesting, if incongruous, blend of metal and indigenous music. The singing style is challenging to listen to, but overall a great album.

I really enjoyed this album. I don't often listen to metal, but when I do I enjoy it. This album was full of energy and had me head banging while making dinner. The negatives were sometimes the lyrics were a little weird for me. I am not sure if it was another language or if they were just noises being made, but sometimes it was enough to draw me out of the zone. The last song was also too long and I was like this could've been done already. Another positive was there were a couple songs that I am going to describe as a "rest break" that were definitely not metal songs, but sonically switch up the vibe and I found them very enjoyable.

I was prepared to hate this. I’m not a fan of this kind of scream-singing. But the music, incorporating sounds and rhythms that aren’t common in metal, is outstanding.

Intense! Good if you need a brain scrub, but it's a lot

Awesome album. Excellent use of indigenous rhythm and music integrated with the "cookie-monster" metal. I might check out others from their catalog.

I had never heard of this band and this shit was awesomeee. Love that it is multi language. The chanting tracks are very interesting. Love the long instrumental outro

Great metal classic

I always heard sepultura was good and.... They are

“Roots Bloody Roots” was my alarm for a while in college. I’m not the biggest fan of metal music, but I do appreciate how they infuse their sound with tribal rhythms and instruments.

Never heard of these guys but they’re awesome! Apparently they’re Brazil’s most popular heavy metal band. I can see why!

Not an album for casual listening, but slaps for a workout like the other Sepultura album on here. It is interesting that this band has two albums on the list but a band like Weezer has none.

Kova on kova. Ei pään nytkyttämiseltä voinut säästyä

Completely New; 4; This was a really fun listen. More on the Nu Metal side, but I feel like this is a really good representation of that genre. Favorite Track: Straighthate

This is an absolute headbanger. The combination of groove metal with Brazilian instruments is a fantastic choice, but I wish they leaned into it more, it feels like most of the time the more traditional instruments are separate from the metal tracks. Wish they were combined more often. Otherwise great!

lowk its hittin, mteli dgea vusmen da even tho metjer agar movusmen albat cuz its not my genre, mainc bombia

It's just too long. That final jam takes off the star, as the rest of the record is amazing. Max Cavalera for life.

I found this to become increasingly interesting as I rolled through the album. It’s brutal yet musically Interesting each song a journey. I wish it could have been just as intricate lyrically but I am surprised I liked it so much. One of the best newish metal albums so far.

Not as good as Arise

This is such a great album!

Not my favourite vocal style these days but good metal

Decent album, this.

Heck yes! Really enjoyed this, and the fun jam thing at the end was a lovely palette cleanser

There was a really weirs transition period in the automobile where mfgs departed from CDs, and tape decks but did not allow for Aux, iPod, and bluetooth to be included. Instead just regular USB drive that allowed you to play Mp3s on the car audio systems. I got my first car in this limbo time period and although I had spotify and a 10,000 song iTunes library. I couldn't use it on my commute to and from community college. But my brother duplicated and converted a bit torrent USB drive and gave it to me. 5 glorious gigabytes of heavy metal fed straight through my car speakers and into my ears. Anyways, the starting album was Sepultura and I've always appreciated how different it sounded for 90s metal. Its definitely not the pinnacle of the genre but it blends grunge, nu metal, hardcore and some semblances of world music it a really fun mix. 4 stars always down for this and its genre mates like Motograder, Mudvayne, Coal Chamber etc.

I don't love the scream-singing, but the heaviness made me feel cool, which is an always plus point 3-4

Really cool to hear, haven't listened to a whole album of this genre before

Finally, a bit of testosterone. Makes me want to 1v1 a wild animal or violently rape a pie

Brazilian Metal. What a lush sound.

love this album

Pretty great. I like the tunes that are not in English the best.

8 / 10

Modern man discovers fire.

Бля ну меня прикольнуло. И хорошо что ребята дали понять что они из бразилии, это тоже плюс. Единственный минус слишком все растянуто

Good, but not my favorite Sepultura album. Sometimes the nu metal creeps in too much on this album

metal music from brazil of all places. best believe you're gonna hear quite a bit of brazilian influence in these tracks, even when a lot of the tracks are sung in english. screaming and growling... really standard metal vocal techniques are paired with REALLY cool distorted guitars and quite possibly some of the best drumming and rhythm sections i have ever heard in a rock album. it's an interesting cultural exchange, both countries equally praise these guys for their work. this is another album i would classify as a true hidden gem.

Surprised I liked this as much as I did. the screamo I don't really care for but they had a lot of fun and interesting tracks and intstrumentation between the screaming.

Very likely the best album nu-metal ever spawn. Far too long though and as such, it feels more like a collection of songs rather than a coherent album. Which sadly is the case with way too many 90s albums.

Não sou grande fã de hardrock, mas a junção de vários elementos sonoros para criar a melodia das músicas desse álbum é algo incrível

Pretty funky tunes, I was a bit apprehensive but it reminded me of the Doom soundtrack.

Teenage me was very happy for this listen.

This is a tough one for me. I liked about 1/3 of the songs, mostly the tribal-type stuff. I didn't like the screamy, Cookie-monster singing on most of the album, though. The music on those songs was pretty good, though. So yeah, I'm torn. 3.5*, but how to round?

Roots, um, Bloody Roots! I can't tell you how many Sepultura patches on tattered jackets I've seen in my time. And yet actually hearing them was elusive, seemingly quarantined to late-night metal radio. Yeah, this was pre-streaming times, and it's not like I didn't hang with metal heads — in my town, all the punks, new wave, and metal kids had to stick together. This is a long way of saying that hearing Roots is significantly overdue, and it didn't disappoint, despite being more groove-oriented than I expected.

Episk innledning. Veldig headbanging-vennlig. Rett og slett fett.

This album rules. I’ll always take their thrash stuff over this (Morbid Visions, Schizophrenia, Arise, and Chaos A.D. are all 5 stars to me). But their full embrace of Brazilian percussion and rhythms here is so powerful and just so damn interesting. Metal, more than other genres, seems to have the ability to adjust to geography in really special ways, and this is maybe the best example. Really influential too, seems like most of these riffs ended up on the first couple Slipknot records. More of this! 🇧🇷🤘🏽

Certainly one of the classics and one of the refreshing attempts to bring new ideas metal which works quite well. Especially the rhythms and drum beats are great.

K, along with System Of A Down my fav so far of this genre. Disparate enough influences as to make it interesting, particularly the percussion.

Seriously stellar album, it’s so good. Itsári a real highlight here

I think the inclusion of this album actually tells us a lot about the methodology of this list... there's two Sepultura albums on the list... Arise from 1991 (their best) and this one which I would consider not one of Sepultura best albums but rather one of their most unique and interesting in the ways it uses Afro-Brazilian rhythms and traditional Brazilian music... anyways like a dumb thing to remember but i guess its not a list of the 1001 best albums ever but rather the ones this one guy thinks you need to listen to before death.. but still im mad at him for some of the bullshit hes made me listen to ngl... 4 stars

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. This is what I wanted most out of this list, more new sounds from different parts of the world.

I wasn't expecting such a fun album. Some folks don't like nu-metal, but I do. I can't believe I'd never heard of Sepultra before yesterday. One song even features Jon Davis, Mike Patton, and DJ Lethal. The last album I reviewed was my 400th. 4 stars for "Roots".

Biboca garagem favela, biboca garagem favela! Fubanga maloca bocada, fubanga maloca bocada! Ooft

Damn such a good album. Lotta good songs here. This was my 2nd sepultura album and the first didnt impress me. I felt like it aged poorly. This album, however, holds up. Feels like this album was a precursor for modern metal. Great listen

Not usually my cup o' tea -- but this was quite good. Super tight musicianship, thunderous riffs, great focused anger. Really enjoyed the rhythms that they incorporated. Basically, this is what Avenged Sevenfold wished they were.

Yah this album took a few years to get into. I’ve always been into really progressive and psychedelic metal music, and comparatively, I always thought this band came across as simple sounding and boring. But that just ended up being how I feel about Roots Bloody Roots. Idk why but I’m just super bored with that one song. That being said the album as a whole is sick. There are all these haunting moments throughout including sick parts with really interesting sounds drums. Honestly I really love this album. It’s just barely not a 5 but it’s as close as it gets.

BANGER??

Day 37 Really enjoyed this, some absolute bangers. Only managed 2 listens as had a busy day but first impressions were good so I’ll be playing it a lot more over coming days 8/10 Highlights Roots Bloody Roots Cut-throat Dusted

I don’t usually gravitate towards the growling heavy metal bands, but Sepultura does it so well that it’s hard not to like them. I don’t listen to them enough to have a favorite album of theirs, but this is genuinely good stuff 3.75 easily rounds up to 4 stars.

I forget how much I enjoy Sepultura. Also weirdly on point for 2025. Sigh.

Chaos A.D. is probably my favorite Sepultura album, but this is a close second! I had forgotten about all the line-up changes that were to come shortly after this record...

Have you ever asked yourself, what is groove metal? Well, this is it. Sweet dreams, music connoisseurs.

# Playlist Track - Roots Bloody Roots # Notes - Not a huge trash metal fan, but this is pretty amazing! - Incredible mix of rhythms, instruments and cultures. - Dare to say it's worth the listen, even if you are not a heavy metal fan.

As a big metal fan, I'm certainly familiar with Sepultura and their controversial history. This album is a big dividing point with their fan base. They mostly dropped their thrash/ dark metal roots for a more downtuned numetal sound popularized by bands such as Korn and Slipknot, but while introducing more Brazilian ethnic influences. Old fans scoffed at the 90s influences invading the classic thrash sound, while others declared it a brilliant new direction for the band. Whatever it was, it was short-lived because the classic lineup imploded shortly after it's release. From its ashes arose the former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera's numetal project Soulfly, and a reinvented Sepultura with the remaining 3 members and new frontman Derrick Green. Arguably, neither subsequent band reached the heights of classic Sepultura. But for a short time after the release of Roots, Sepultura were one of the 3 biggest metal bands in the world along with Metallica and Pantera. Personally I think the current version of Sepultura has finally hit their own stride while Max has reunited with his brother and former Sepultura drummer Igor in a project called Cavalera Conspiracy which seems content to rehash Sepultura classics. It's one of the great feuds in hays rock and metal for sure. Anyway, I prefer the old thrash era of the band, but Roots is fine with me. It's definitely one of the most unique metal albums to hit the big time. 3.5/5 #173

This feels like...1999, although I see now that it's more like 1996. Moderately ahead of its time! Feels cohesive and innovative in a way that a lot of nu-metal simply is not. I hear this and I can hear my college roommate's voice chastising me for not lifting heavy, but hey, it's pretty good. Like so many of these older, edge-of-radio albums, best when it's integrating other sounds (which it does fluently) and at its worst when it's evoking what are now and maybe were then nu-metal tropes.

The metal is just metal, I suppose. Well done. But the blending of traditional instruments and rhythms into the metal, that is brilliance. Only a couple songs of that, so I won't judge the album as a whole too high. But I love the work. 3.5/5

cool record

Not as good as the other one on the list but still enjoyed it!

++: Roots Bloody Roots, Attitude, Cut-Throat, Ratamahatta, Breed Apart, Straighthate, Lookaway, Born Stubborn, Jasco, Itsári, Endangered Species, Dictatorshit, Canyon Jam +: Spit, Dusted, Ambush 9,0/10

Probably best album opener I’ve heard in awhile! Love the rhythms, love the instruments. Thought the song in Portuguese was great. I should have skipped the last song though… 13 minutes of rubbing some metal.

This is absolute peak Sepultura. This is an album I actually own and haven't listened to for a long time. I really enjoyed re-visiting it and fell in love with Sepultura all over again.

So, I work as a counselor, and about a week ago, I had a younger hispanic guy come into my office to talk about the guilt and shame he feels over cheating on his wife. We got to talking, and he's a musician that really loves Latin rhythms and musicianship. I asked if he'd ever listened to Sepultura's Roots. He said he'd never heard of them, so I sent him home with part of his assignment being to listen to Roots. It won't fix the guilt or shame that he feels, but this record might give him an hour of respite from those feelings because it's so badass. I'm sort of kidding about that story. Obviously, we talked about the real issues and we're working on strategies to become more trustworthy and honest. But, for real, Seputura's Roots rules so hard, and everyone ought to hear it at least once. 4.5/5

Heavy with an interesting mix of Brazilian percussion
