Reviews (page 2 of 7)

Really love this, kind of one note but it works 🏎️. Steve sounds like Peter Gabriel and it rules

Arc of A Diver (not to be confused with Holy Diver) was a great way for the parents of 80’s kids to teach us about Traffic. Is it a good album? No idea. It’s familiar and safe so it seems ok in a light rock way.

Is it not interesting how relativity is the only way I am able to subjectify material? How I can find enjoyment in anomalous places due to boring ass albums that I listened to before this? Honestly fuck it 5/5. edit: i looked at the global reviews and im now going to be a sheep and give this album a 4/5

This is a decent album. A lot of nice songs. Great voice. Night train has a funky bassline. I'm give a 4

Funky and interesting.

Very surprised to see low reviews for this album. I wasn't too excited going in, but it surprised me. Great singing and a really good showcase of talent across the board. This album is very easy to listen to.

Actually, I loved this. It's the kind of earnest and perfectly executed pop you just can't get away with making any more. An absolute precision strike of production.

Surprise album - I did not expect to like this album as much as I did, it has a pleasant classical sound but also a modern upbeat swing behind it. I researched a bit about this album after the fact to find out that Steve Winwood played all of the instrumental sections by himself throughout this entire project, which is a practice I respect deeply and full heartedly Best song - While You See a Chance

i was 8 when this came out and probably not quite ready for what winwood is doing here. "while you see a chance" was everywhere and remained a classic rock staple. it's a damn good song, and the extended album version is even better than the single. the whole album is really quite great

Favorite Track: Night Train

Hey, this is a cool album! Very Phil Collins (good!) Favourite track: Arc of a Diver

SW is extremely talented

This is pretty cool, the palette is tasteful.

Mooi hoor

Qué gusto da cuando un álbum te da una sorpresa para bien. Me gustó demasiado.

Vond dit wel leuk

Buen ritmo, creo que lo volveré a escuchar, me gusta.

This is actually a pretty great album. I think maybe at the time I felt that while yeah, it was Okay, it was still kind of mainstream for my alternative tastes so I kinda sorta never put all his songs together. Now that I listened to a full album and have maybe a bit of distance from when it came out, I find it pretty great actually. Straight up this is a solid, good album worth listening to, maybe more than once!

I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump down to a 4. I like Steve Winwood a lot. I like ‘80s production, even when it’s this cheesy & synth heavy. I also like Phil Collins, whose lack of a solo album here baffles me a little bit; not even “Face Value”, just for “In The Air Tonight”? I bring up Phil because… well, Steve Winwood sounds a lot like Phil Collins here, as many people have pointed out, especially so on the first two tracks. Put all of that together, along with Steve’s solid (if cheesy) songwriting & his innate musical ability (he played EVERY SINGLE instrument here), and you end up with a pretty damn good effort across the board. I enjoyed all the tracks here; there’s a good funk behind tracks like “Second-Hand Woman” & “Night Train”, some great guitar work both electrically & acoustically (“Slowdown Sundown” on the latter especially), and when this album wants to break out real drums to go with the synths, it just makes me wonder why so many artists in this decade chose to pair drum machines with synths. Granted, Steve is just as guilty of drum machine use here, but it still sounds nice. Overall, while it’s certainly cheesy at times & EXTREMELY dated to 1980, it’s the sort of cheesy style that’s directly attuned to my musical tastes, for better or worse. So, why the 4.5 bumped down to a 4? Well, even I have my limits / critiques. This album settles into its starting groove a bit too often, leaving these tracks in a state of limbo that you will either tolerate because it’s surrounded by little synth hits & melodies that try to keep it fresh, or you will despise it because the synth hits just feel like bandaids for an endless loop. The truth is somewhere in the middle; I think these do a decent job of maintaining a groove & an energy, but not enough tracks shake things up meaningfully in a way that gives the track good progression. That’s combined with repeating lyrics & an overt reliance on choruses that starts to feel really noticeable towards the end of the album. “Arc of a Diver” is guilty of that chorus reliance, “Second-Hand Woman” desperately needs a bridge in there to shake up the rhythm, “Spanish Dancer” does as well, & “Dust” is just overly guilty of the repeating lyrics, in a way where it’s a weaker album closer. The best track here is a tie between “When You See a Chance” & “Night Train”, as neither really hit on those tropes. That pile of issues along with the same ‘consistently good, never hits a stretch of great’ thought process that I threw at “Brothers” is why this is getting a bump down to a 4, but as with “Brothers”, I still really enjoyed it & I still do recommend it. Obviously, since I have an affinity for this style & a bit of tolerance, I don’t see all of those issues as huge sinking deals, but for people who already don’t really like this style, I sort of get & understand the 1’s & 2’s. Personally, I think the floor is a 3, but regardless, I think it’s still got a place on the list. It’s certainly on the chopping block, but I’ve heard much, much worse before. It’s a 4.5 that I’ll bump down to a 4.

This is certainly 1980

I liked this one!!

This was pretty good. I like Steve Winwood and have since he was in Traffic, and everything he does is generally pretty great. This album was a little shorter than I'd like, but otherwise I enjoyed it. Four stars.

Very impressed that he played all the instruments on this. Talented guy

Familiar with Steve (formerly Stevie) from his previous lives. Quite impressed that he wrote all the songs, played every instrument, preformed all lead and backing vocals, mixed, engineered, and produced the entire album in the studio he built on his farm in England. And the album is good (mellow.) Strong start with While You See A Chance, Al the other songs are listenable or better. Solid finish with Night Train and Dust. Great breakout solo effort by Winwood. L = (3.0*s) Additional points for executing this entire project from start to finish by himself, definitely listened with more appreciation upon learning this, otherwise would be just another mellow Winwood album. J = (4.4*s) When you see a chance, take it! We’ll be hearing from Steve again before the project is complete.

Good vibes Faves - arc of a diver and while you see a chance

🎧If enjoying the heck out of this album makes me a basic-ass white guy, so be it

Definitely really impressive that basically everything you hear on this album is Winwood himself - it's not often you find a one-man album, especially of this quality. Perhaps as a result of this singular effort, all the tracks kind of have the same sound to me. With all the context of when and how this album was recorded, I would rate it 5/5, but subjectively to my own taste it's going to be a 4/5.

Favorite Track: While You See A Chance

Enjoyed this one a lot more than I was expecting. When this album popped up, my immediate reaction was “what the hell is this gonna be?”, but then I listened to the first track and I was like “hey I know this”. Sounds very similar to Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel. Very much enjoyed it.

ja love Steve Winwood. niet m'n favoriete plaat van hem dus 4 sterren

8.5/10

very characteristic 80s sound honestly. eh tapi seru yaaa!! im enjoying the tasteful synths.

Winwood, having partnered with Clapton at times in their careers, shares a lot of the same type of blues-inspired easy listening that sucked up (frankly, too much) of their 80s output. But, because he sounds so much like Clapton I have such a soft spot for it. It's good, it's become cheesy but there's masterful work underneath it all.

Mann FUCK I was so ready to hate this album, but I immediately was having fun from the first track. Sure the whole thing is corny, sure the second half of the album starts to drag, but fuck it if this wasn't a joy to listen to. Steve Winwood has some really enjoyable vocals, mixed with the synths creates a beautifully goofy and sincere album. Let a white boy catch a vibe. Fav track: 1 - While You See A Chance Best Three Track Run: 1, 2, 3

Very good album Song I like: Arc of a Diver, Sundown-Sundown, Night Train

His voice is odd, but in a good way. And some of the music is a bit dated, but I really like this album!!

I’m not familiar enough with Steve Winwood’s catalog to confidently call this yacht rock, but it definitely lives in that smooth, breezy neighborhood. The whole album has a polished, laid back feel that makes it really easy to listen to without fading into background noise. While You See a Chance is still a straight up banger. It also might be one of the best uses of synth before the 80s completely wore that sound out. Everything feels tasteful and restrained instead of flashy. Clean production, strong songwriting, and a vibe that holds up better than I expected.

Loved the opening tracks but the slower ones held it back a little, will be listening to more Steve

Oh yeah! While You See A Chance is an absolute banger! Good album overall!

Chillig

Apparently we have a lot of yacht rock haters doing this project. I personally enjoy yacht rock, and I enjoyed this inclusion from Steve Winwood! I think "yacht rock" became rather synonymous with laid back songs with somewhat laid back lyrics. Here, though, Winwood puts a lot of thought into his lyrics, and each come across as meaningfully written. The music is classic yacht rock, though Winwood still excels even here with masterful arrangements. Speaking of the masterful arrangements, it is worth noting that Winwood did nearly everything here -- sung, played all the instruments, and did all the mixing. That's incredibly impressive! A fantastic album that, in my opinion, deserves more praise!

Great little album if you like 80's soul, pop rock, especially. There is a lot of talent and amazing composition and playing here, but a lot of people may dismiss it for just the 80's part. Still, Winwood played all the instruments and wrote some amazing hooks and parts that come together here in a fun and interesting way.

Eighties-rrific! And refreshing. Yes some parts sound dated or even cheesy but there's something awesome about this record. 3.8

Steve Winwood was my first date with my wife. A great album.

An album filled with yacht rock goodness, but not greatness. As someone who has recently gotten into yacht rock more, especially since it’s like a spiritual cousin to city pop, I hadn’t heard this album yet. Like I said though, the album is good, not great. While an overall fun album, I feel like there are better examples out there that could have been chosen. 3.75 / 5

Damn I really liked the first two songs. Synthy and boppy and both actually a lot more my speed than "Higher Love" which I also enjoy. I'm rating this a four because I just love those first two songs so much and they're 29% of the album. The rest is a vibe. Maybe I just love music these days, IDK.

Cool early 80s sound

4.14/5 Stars Top Songs: Second Hand Woman, While You See a Chance and Night Train

Ah, off to a good start with farty 80s synth. Weird how that's happened on several 1001 albums so far. Nah, "While You See a Chance" turns into a decent song though. Ooh, the bass gets a little farty too! Honestly though I'm kinda vibing with this. Perfectly cromulent soft rock. Solid listen.

# Playlist Track - While You See A Chance # Notes - Kind of a generic 80's sound, for sure. But I really dig the synths and jazzy sounds. - Opening track is a certified banger! - Rest is kind of forgettable, good for background noise. - But I still enjoyed it, and I'm giving one extra star for the SICK cover art.

Þessi vinnur á. Misskemmtileg lög, en ég er sérstaklega hrifinn af titillaginu, While you see a chance, Spanish diver. Hitt er solid 80s adult contemporary. Ég er adult contemporary, já já.

I remember when Steve and Len Houmous accidentally got married when they were trekking to Machu Picchu. That’s actually what the strokes wrote the song about. 4.0 6/7 Night Train

so sweet and nice

Osamdesete su vrlo rano počele za našeg stevea

sophisticated, soulful

I like both Traffic and Steve Winwood, in fact the first concert I ever went to was on his solo Roll With It tour, but there is no denying that this album is a little dated. I have never heard fartier sounding keyboards, and some of the songs hang around a bit too long, but I quite liked this. The first two tracks are great, and whilst it does drift away towards the end it’s still a strong collection. It seems not many people agree with me …

Steve Winwood of Traffic fame goes solo, for the second time. The cover is influenced by Matisse's Icarus i think, quite nice.Is a good album but the synth and pads should either be handled/mixed differently or maybe played by a session virtuoso musician.I've never heard this album before so as i listen let's see the songs one by one. When You See A Chance intro is heavy synth based,as it progresses is totally 80's style Yaht Rock as most describes it.Sometimes i get a Phil Collins vibe.Yes the synths might sound funny but hey there was a clumsiness back in the 80's in that area especially on how to handle vibrato synths or in this case synths in general. In Arc Of A Diver the resonance and loudness of the synth is turning somehow bad but overall is a good song.Remember Winwood plays all instruments here. Second-Hand Woman is pretty good, has funky as hell bass, and synths shine properly.Nowadays french disco house aims hardly for that sound.Groovy. Slowdown Sundown starts off folk-y and beautifully,i suspect the synth that pops up bit later could be better overall in all songs if he just changed the preset. Here he plays something like a lute as well which is very nice. The keys are always good so far. Spanish Dancer synth intro is quite good but bit loud and as it progresses almost covers the song and the vocals in particular.Funny thing is that the synth is fantastic here.If this was mixed and balanced properly maybe it could have been a favourite as i'm a synth lover. The pads really bothered me here though. Night Train as the videoclip also shows (in the intro, the train reference and sounds, the black and white usage) was heavily influenced by Trans Europe Express by Kraftwerk. I can see and hear some Bowie in this one as well.I really liked this one.It has something of a New Romantics sound in it. Could have been an early New Order song or a Hacienda hit. Dust is the last song and i feel like this album could have more.I am a sucker for such 80's songs.Great singing as well,i love Winwood's voice. I got to say i really enjoyed it.80's with it's imperfections but i can hear so many influences. 4/5 because the pads could be better sometimes they almost ruin the vibe, and for the synth handling.

Pretty cool album, I always thought While You See A Chance just appeared on radio dj desks to be mixed in forever. It is shocking that he did all of this album himself. A 3.5 for me, but bumping for respect.

Excellent late classic rock sound

Some days it is the list and other day its the participants. But this exercise proves to be challenging for mostly those two reason. Today its the participants. Steve Winwood is a phenomenal Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins adjacent pop song writer. There is so much heart and soul behind these pop tunes, with such phenomenal instrumentation (for its time), brilliant melodies and a relaxed pace that makes this a great album for study, work, or tasks. I'm impressed, a little slow at times but its short and sweet. Steve's hits are always great but a full album experience eas worth it also.

This album is now 45 y.o. so it's challenging to think about what the audience thought at their time of the soft, sophisticated and warm mixture of sounds and genres.

I have listened to this album countless times—was always a fave since it was first released. It has been a while, and I didn't quite get to a 5-star for whatever reason, but so many great songs, cool arrangements, even if it is choc full o' synths, and just a dreamy vibe. "While You See A Chance," "Arc of a Diver," "Spanish Dancer" — I just love the melodies and riffs (and bass lines) in those tunes.

this was super fun throughout!! super great use of that specific old synth sound

Very nice to listen to. Jazzy.

Short, but great. You can tell who he has influenced

Holy shit, if you played this with no context, I might've guessed this was Genesis. Felt like this was just ok sounding until I got to Spanish Dancer and Night Train. Those 2 songs really brought some juice to the album. I think I can go Low 4 here despite the overt Phil Collins impression.

Well this was a nice surprise. Five solid funky/soulful synth jams sandwiched by two fat slices of 80s cheese. But even with as cheesy as the opener is, it is fine enough -- sounds like a bargain store Genesis song from the Collins era. Title track is kind of a jam. Still can't shake the discount store Phil Collins vibe. Some tasty guitar in here. Second-Hand Woman is a funky one too -- synths sound a bit cheesy, but they are tearing it up. Spanish Dancer is a standout. Love the synths throughout. Night Train is equally fantastic -- love the smoothed out guitar plucking that underlies this whole song. Gives it a vibe of space travel -- definitely have heard Lotus do very similar things during their jams, but this has a crusty soul to it that is so satisfying The cheese factor is through the roof on Dust. I mean, its on a _bad_ song, but it is far from a strong closer IMO. Not something I see myself giving a lot of re-listens to, but certainly had me jamming more often than not. I'll say this is a soft 4 in my book.

Another singer who sounds like he is in Genesis. Kinda falls into the low 4 category, but it's definitely better than Shack, so it gets a seat at the table.

Dennis Reynolds favorite artist! Why do all these random artists sound exactly the same? (Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Winwood) Some of these are jams. Specifically loving the beginning of Night Train. Love that he pretty much did everything on this album. Safe but entertaining.

mightve got the tiniest bit repetitive near the end but gee wiz i like it!

A good album, I liked While You S e A Chance and Slowdown Sundown the most.

What the what is going on here? Some prog, some blue-eyed soul, some fantastic beats, some filler. A couple of tracks that just don't cohere. A couple of tracks that, however dated, still really really work. Sometimes I felt I was stuck in '70s Leo Sayer groover and at other times I was listening to the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. 3.5 stars for the successes, where Winwood's talent really shines through.

I’ve always heard When You See A Chance and thought it was a fine enough 80s tune. But I really love the depth of the rest of the album, using synth and organ in ways I really love. Overall I think I’ll dive into Mr. Winwood a little more after this album

Funky jams Perfect album for being on the water Can fade to the background at times Dust is a Strong beautiful ending. 4.3 outta 5

This is lovely, very well polished, and completely unmemorable.

I liked this album. This is the first time I have listened to the entire album and must say I enjoyed it. 4/5

Steve Winwood has five songs that I enjoy. In ascending order, they are "The Finer Things," "Roll With It," "Back In The High Life Again," "Higher Love," and "Valerie." Unfortunately, none of those songs are on this album, and I don't think I've heard anything off of this album before. I don't know what to expect from Arc of a Diver, but I'm hoping I'll discover some more Steve Winwood songs to add to my regular rotation. I thought Arc of a Diver was pretty good. I’d always wondered if I’d been missing out on not listening to any of Steve’s whole albums, and while there were some good songs on here, I think Steve Winwood is more of a ‘greatest hits’ artist for me. I think this album showcases his ability create some great arrangements with synthesizers, and think he’s particularly adept at combining synths and bass guitars. I’m honestly shocked that I’d never managed to hear any of these songs before. Nothing on here can touch the Chronicles remix of “Valerie,” but “While You See a Chance” is fantastic. Those synthesized horns are exactly what I love to hear from Steve Winwood. The main melody is fantastic, and I love the lyrics too. “Arc of a Diver” was really good too. I loved that the percussion was a bit different than what’s used on the rest of the album. I love a good power pop jam from Steve, but this slower tune sounded great. “Second-Hand Woman” went back closer to the power pop sounds I really loved the bass guitar. The drumming was really tight too, and it complimented the bass groove perfectly. The bright synthesizer melodies were great too. “Spanish Dancer” was great too. It did a great job of showing how Steve can create such diverse sounds with his synthesizers. The bass guitar sounded great here too. I enjoyed listening to this album, and it was cool to finally listen to a full album from an artist that I’ve been a casual fan of for a long time. I was initially going to give this album three stars, but now that I’ve gone back through it and really reflected on it, I think it’s worth four stars. Even though not everything on here is my taste, I think it’s really well made, and it’s a good showcase of Steve Winwood’s talents as a musician (I completely forgot to mention that I love that he played all the instruments himself).

type of music id listen to whilst walking. doesn't emit a specific feeling yet at the same time brings a type of peace

Yacht rock, but bops!

hell yeah

Every song is good nothing that stands out stands out

Really liked this album

I like Winwood's work with Blind Faith and Traffic and this solo album keeps that standard high.

very solid record

The record is very good, and that took me by surprise, since I’ve never really listened to “yacht rock” before or soft rock. It’s a very impressive album though, since Steve Winwood played all of the instruments!! It’s good!! I’m glad I liked it as much as I did.

I liked this album. Upbeat and decent songs! Don't get what all the hate comments are for 4 ⭐️

Winwood brings a more progressive sound to this 1980 release. Electronic percussion and more synths than his back catalog gives this album an exploration feel. "While You See A Chance" and the title track are very easy to get comfortable with, and "Night Train" shows him never very far from his old friends like Clapton. An easy listen at 7 songs in 40 minutes.

Fun, easy listening soft rock - with Standouts in While You See A Chance, Arc Of A Diver, Spanish Dancer, and Night Train.

Production is like so bad but it is Steve winwood so the songs and vocals are fucking unbelievable. Also love the songs. A lot of nostalgia for his voice

very nice indeed, even more so cause he did all the instrumental and most of the engineering by himself

Steve Winwood pulls off a surprising splash into synthesized waters with this well assured and confident record. This is the kind of album that elicits a turn of the head, only to encourage and ultimately engender enjoyment of what's being heard. Favorites: While You See a Chance, Arc of a Diver, Secondhand Woman, Spanish Dancer.

There really are some moments of absolute genius on here, but some of it just really sucks as well.

I don't actually like this, but I'm giving it four stars anyhow because I'm a sucker for "this dude played all the instruments on this album." Such a weird little guy thing to do. Just puttering around in his basement doing his thing.

It was good. Reminded me of Kenny Loggins

This would be a 3.5 for me. There are some real duds here, but the rest are excellent!

Nem rossz, vezetni chillelni fun album

Steve Winwood is hit or miss for me, and this album is no exception. The first half is so good, with "When You See a Chance" and "Arc of a Diver" being the best songs on the album and "Slowdown Sundown" also being a standout. But it really loses steam in the second half. "Dust" is okay, but the other songs are a mess. I'd give this a 3.5 if I could, but I'm rounding up because I know I'll be listening to the first half of this album on repeat quite a bit.

So 80s! But so good. Very Phil Collins sounding. Great pop.

Fun, but not very memorable

Pretty good

loved the cover and loved the songs just as much!

I had only listened to the back in the high life album from Steve so wood. This didn’t have as many catchy singles, but still a solid album.

While You See a Chance and Arc of a Diver are 5/5, the rest are solid. 4/5

This album feels like a transitional plane between the 70s and 80s. It was rad

Not a belly flop at all and also not anywhere near a 10 either. Mainly just very good. When You See A Chance is one of the better tunes and opens with some legendarily cheesey Sooty n Sweep synth tones. Second-Hand Woman ramps up the cheesy 80s disco and is a bit of a bop. Night Train has more of a steelier, hard rock vibe with mean lengthy Claptonesque guitar solos. Title track is cowritten with Bonzo Dog stalwart Vivian Stanshall not that it makes a big difference because the tune itself is so so. Light 4 overall.

Another review calles this "normcore" and I've never felt so seen. The cheesiest 80s cheese to ever cheese. 4 stars.

Really solid album. Still in my occasional rotation.

Расслабляющая, занимательная музыка, переносящая в лето. Представляю себя этим дайвером.

Yacht-rocky to say the least, but tuneful, surprisingly sophisticated, and on the whole quite enjoyable.

I'm rating based on the strength of the first two songs, the rest was just pleasant background music.

Came in with no expectarion and I really liked it, very well executed 80s pop, good synth and quite funky.

2 albuma za redom slušana s ploče. Jebeno.

Day 23: Arc of a Driver - Steve Winwood. Steve Winwood album 1/1. On the surface, it's an inoffensive pop rock (or, as a lot of people call it *gag* yacht rock) album. However, I cannot help, but absolutely love it. A lot of pop rock music from the late-1970's and early-1980's has this type of feel to it where it feels very simple, but it's unbelievably enjoyable. I like the jazzy elements in this album. I like the melodies of the songs. This album reminds me of the works of Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel, and I LOVE both of those artists very much. This is such a smooth and enjoyable album. Unfortunately, I wouldn't really consider this album to be an essential listen. This album would probably not impact anybody who doesn't already love the type of music that is played in this album. I'd replace it with a Phil Collins solo album. I find it crazy that there isn't a single Phil Collins solo album among the 1,089 albums in the generator. Personal Enjoyment: 5/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 3/5.

Idk why everyone is nasty about this album, there is a lot of good on here. Funky, disco, tight beat. Ostentatious coke-fueled 80s vibe. What's not to love.

A little dated but had lots of fun with this

4.1 - Enjoyed this a lot

Genesis-achtige jarentachtigpop die weinig buiten de lijntjes kleurt. Leuk gedaan hoor, maar weinig viel op.

That keyboard slaps, just making sure it’s Winwood and not a studio musician… Wiki: “Steve Winwood does all vocals and instruments” Well, the production is pretty crisp, I wonder who put it all together… Wiki: “Steve Winwood produced the whole album” I guess fool me twice, since I went through a similar discovery with Traffic’s John Barleycorn album. Enjoyed Arc of a Diver, despite not being as into similar 80s soft rock releases (e.g. The Nightfly). It helps that I *really* enjoy the first track, "While You See a Chance", which was on the radio pretty regularly growing up. The rest of the album is jazzier than I expected- which again, I should have learned from John Barleycorn that Winwood leans towards jazz from time to time. HL: "While You See a Chance", title track, "Second Hand Woman", "Spanish Dancer", "Dust" December 13, 2024

Second album in a row I actually own. Hadn't listened to it for some time. Listening to it now showed me that I should listen to it more often.

Wunderbar

Sophisti-pop is a new music term I learned today. For as familiar as the sounds on this album are to me, especially with the song 'Second-Hand Woman', I struggle to link it to any names at this very moment. Either way, I'm always down for a good little pop album so I dug this. It's filled to the brim with sweet melodies and even sweeter instrumentals - whether funky like on the title track, disco and dance like on 'Night Train', or delicate and soulful like on 'Slowdown Sundown'. Maybe the song that blew me away the most was 'Night Train' which has (ahead-of-its-time) ambient house elements, especially with those hi-hats. But the entire thing also sounds like it could fit very snuggly into a Talking Heads album...It's that white funk. Shiny, bright, and sunny all the way through - the stuff ears are made for. So ear-candy.

Steve Winwood should be more famous. I'm not going to say he's a british farmer version of Stevie Wonder but.....maybe I am. This is just the kind of music I want playing in my house. The synth sounds are very particular but I really like all the tones and his vibe...he knows what he's doing in the combo of those textures and his vocals...it just sounds good. Even when the songs are a bit long they don't really drag. I also respect a man who knows who he is...the first song is the best song. He knew he had a single.

Stray notes Not sure if Steve Winwood is classified as 'easy listening' but it intuitively fits the definition to me. Most of the value for me is as a time capsule, but since I'm so nostalgic for this era I barely lived through, I can't evaluate the art objectively. I had never heard any songs on this album before, but enjoyed it all the way. Imagine this is gonna get a lot of 3's and 2's, but I'm throwing up 4 fingers for my guy Steve. Such good cheesy 80s pop. Give me as much synth as I can handle. Guy just got in a three-point stance and leaned on the keys, chord after chord. Winwood is like Phil Collins minus the self-seriousness – just pure earnest cheddar. This kind of music makes me want to unbutton my shirt and rip a few lines with the boys. While you See a Chance is so fucking cheesy it feels tailor-made for a movie montage of someone packing up a small but tidy apartment to move out to the west coast, only to realize as they're on the on-ramp to the highway that what they've wanted all along has been in front of them the whole time

Blue-Eyed Soul done right. Winwood's ability to move across genres throughout his career kept him relevant for far longer than many of his age. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see more of his associated work in this project. Four and one-half stars. Pushed up a half for being a true solo album, as he played all the instruments himself.

This was good. I enjoyed it very much. Was impressed to learn he did all the instrumentation himself.

Pretty fun

Album 559 of 1001 Steve Winwood - Arc Of A Diver (1980) Rating : 3.85 / 5 Good album. My memories of it consisted of seeing it at the top of the charts in Rolling Stone back in the day. First time hearing it and I enjoy it more than I expected. It is a total Winwood project as he played all instruments on the album. Some commented it sounds like Peter Gabriel and I can hear that, too. This is one I can recommend.

Like taking a pure distilled shot of the 80s. Impressive that every single instrument is him. Fun.

Really pleasant, sounded like a jazzier Phil Collins

About as mid as the other prison recording

Familiar early 80s soft-pop

Dah, it was always going to happen. I liked it. But then I’ve a soft spot for synth pop of that era. I can’t help it.

He’s a talented guy. Had his time in the forefront

Algjör gullmoli. Skúturokk með smá diskóívafi. Og þessi dásamlega rödd bræðir mig alveg.

Just a consistently good album. 4 stars or B.

He’s a talented dude. Really enjoyed this!

Veldig steely dan vibes

Ojoj fett bra album Bästa låtar: Spanish Dancer, Night train, Dust

I love this album—it reintroduced Steve Winwood and showed the breadth of his talent. Admittedly not every song is great but enough of them are for me. My favorite is probably Spanish Dancer.

Never heard this before but this was fun! Given its release year was this proto-yacht rock? Sounds like it definitely inspired both Mayer Hawthorne and John Mayer’s Sob rock while drawing from the Beatles.

Spanish Dancer stood out, breezy and warm. Night Train opens with funky bass and guitar licks, then kicks into gear with piano and an anthemic chorus. I'm digging this. I relistened to the first half and the first two tracks aren't doing much for me but Second Hand Woman is another nice one. Dust is a pretty good closer. I like 4 of the 7 tracks quite a bit, good enough for ****. Also impressed that Winwood plays all the instruments on the album!

Liked this - nice and upbeat - didnt realise i knew other songs of his.

Love the lead song “When You See A Chance”. A lot of synthesizer on the album, but it hits a bit different than the usual songs of the 80s. Voice similar to Peter Gabriel. We get hit with a little funk from time to time as well! Low 4.

One of the great unsung heroes of rock music. Absurdly talented. First hit the charts as lead vocalist of the Spencer Davis Group at 18 years old. Then via Traffic and Blind Faith to solo work. He even played organ on Voodoo Chile!

Winwood is an excellent instrumentalist, songwriter and producer - and this completely homemade record shows.

I can't lie the look of the album cover had me bracing for some nonsense, so colour me surprised when the first track was good and then the rest of the tracks also turned out to be good. It's tuneful and happy, and sorry to everyone who can't just chill out and enjoy generic sounding music from time to time. I do not believe that some people find this unlistenable because it is so inoffensive that there's no way they're not just being pretentious or dramatic. Anyways, I liked all the songs, it has a reasonable runtime as well, this was an unexpected 4 for me

I really enjoyed the album. Winwood's got some good lyrics and a killer bassist for a lot of these songs. I don't love the album and I'm not sure why I needed to hear it before I die, but it brings me a higher love. 4/5!

There’s a lot of abuse for this album for some reason, meanwhile it’s impressive just for the fact that he’s playing all the instruments on it and playing them well. Good commercial 80s rock.

80s music by the icon myself - great work

Keyboard heavy soft rock. Nothing mind blowing but decent easy listen.

Really interesting music from this album. I enjoyed most of it. Nothing stood out as being that ‘’masterpiece” song though. Everything kind of blended, still very good though

Winwood's transition from Traffic clarified that he was pop-focused, much like Phil Collin's latter Genesis recordings. Fun but...different.

This is so good It's not cool but its damn good High 4. Not cool but brilliant title track is superb

Never heard of this before, but I really liked it!

He is a very talented songwriter and musician! The one thing I will say is that I didn't fully vibe with the atmospheric vibe that was going on, but I am so impressed that he singlehandedly wrote, played, and mixed this whole album. I genuinely enjoyed it, even if it wasn't my perfect sound.

off the bat, I love a kazoo otomatone type vibe so I was in not as much of a fan of the slower later songs as I was the openers

OK, good solid Rock/Pop

I don't know all that much about Steve Winwood, beyond his three or four major singles. So I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this listen, but I thought it might have some cheesy 80's synths. And guess what, they're here! Still, the reviews on this site sort of surprised me. A 2.88 average?! Does no one here appreciate the sleek, neon goodness of '80s bangers? Because aged as they may be, the songwriting here is on point, with Winwood and his co-writer Will Jennings delivering banger after banger indeed. The smooth and breezy collection made me feel like I was sipping mai tais on a beach and not stuck at work. That's enough to warrant a solid 4 stars.

Sound is very 80s. Quite fun and energetic

yacht rock excellence. highlights: “while you see a chance” “second-hand woman” “night train”

This album was the ultimate “falling into your dad’s music taste check” and it checked me HARD. I used to think Valarie as a song as so mild when I’d listen to it compared to the sampled version from Eric Prydz/Thomas Bangalter. Then I listen to this album and maaaaan Steve’s in the POCKET on these songs. Not overdoing it, just groovin

Happily surprised with this one. Elegant, solid production, some sweet keyboard, and quality vocals. Just good vibes in general.

Tremendo opener con esos synths, todo el album tuvo instrumentales y writing increíble, pero especialmente los synths

bien groovy me gustó buco. 8/10

I really liked this actually. Never heard of Steve Winwood or this album, but this feels like somebody has put the 80s into a can

NEI ES ISCH FUNNY SYNTHI TIME CHILETIME? OKKKK FUNNY SYNTHI TIIME oah geili stimm sehr 80er hahahaha de synthi isch sehr dominant und emngisch chli too much aber au sehr funny, erinneret mich chli an manfred mann's earth band uhh slowdown-sundown mega schön night train findis hi hat funny aber s lied selber chlii lanwgilig ja grundsätzlich die zweit hälfti isch chli immer glich gsi aber trz es klars 4i, ich lieb de goofy synthi

Classic 4

love me some Steve Winwood!!!

Okay so I’ve always been enamored with/by Steve Winwood’s annoying voice. I can’t get enough of it. For a dude who’s been everywhere, this album was solid. The funky weird synthy basses, the works. I really like it. Nothing stands out as much as the first two tracks for me, but it just felt terrific to listen all at once.

This is a pretty groovy album, I was plesently surprised. Pretty fun listen. I will likely give it another go. 4/5

i actually fuck with this heavy this shit like a 4.2

What a really pleasant, upbeat, feel-good album. Extremely 80s in sound and style, but that's okay - I love that feel. Winwood has an amazing voice that is very reminiscent of Phil Collins (for me at least). The fact that he played every instrument on the album is mind boggling...and did so to an impressive degree. There's only a couple tracks that I wasn't fond of and the synths/keys are a little overwhelming at times. But all in all, a very fine album. Favorite tracks: While You See a Chance, Arc of a Diver, Slowdown Sundown, Night Train.

Sophisti pop. I taped Back in the High Life back in 1986 and liked it a lot at the time. Discovered Arc of a Diver only 15 years later or so, and was less impressed. Today: I appreciate the overall smoothness, the synths on While You'll See A Chance and like Night Train a lot, but still cannot get fully into the album and prefer the Traffic albums. score: 7/10.

Неплохо, но музыка не моя. Однако, с утра подняла настроение даже.

I enjoyed it. I was surprised.

That was pretty enjoyable

So many songs on here that I know. Cool synthesizer sounds. I could listen to it again.

Some good ones, I really liked Slowdown-Sundown

Bien aimé, très chill/vieux

4 star

Can't believe how old this album is. Some really nice sound

Enjoyed this way more than expected, been listening to this in the background for a while now and haven't gotten tired of it. Four stars

3.5 for me

¡Pedazo de disco y pedazo de artista!.

Cheesy 80s stuff but not in the bad way.

Loved this album. Stevie certainly won with this wood. Great melodies, fantastic vocal performance. Bright fun and funky, a real gem. 8

Another easy listening album. I felt transported to a different time.

I did not know Steve played all instruments on this, that makes it so much more impressive! The songs are pretty great, concise. have distinctive vocals and a great melodic approach. Standout tracks: While You See A Chance, Arc Of A Diver, Slowdown Sundown, Night Train, Dust 8 out of 10

loved most of it, glad that there's lyrics and that wasn't just an instrumental album. Great discovery

first listen brilliant synths. if every 80s sax solo was replaced with a synth solo that sounded like this record, the world would be a better place

Alan Parsonsy style, not quite as good but could grow on me

Very enjoyable now as then. Talent.

decent. lot of smooth jazz. plus the album art is a piece of my childhood which bumps it to a 4 from a 3

Som muito agradavel, boa instrumentacao

Had very low expectations based on the album art and name of the guy but some of the songs were undeniably groovy and got me dancing in the kitchen. Nothing transcendent but there's good stuff here.

Ooh I’ve always liked the band Traffic but I had no idea the singer / plays-a-little-but-of-everything guy in the band had a solo career that includes this slightly cheesy 80s pop album. I’m very much open to loving this. So far, based on the first few tracks, the vibe is positive and his vocals are a great fit for this style. Reminds me of Peter Gabriel but I’ve never been a big Gabriel fan so this is a slight upgrade for me. He played every instrument on this? Wow. Genius level stuff. “Night Train” is a funky synth-rock jam! Really enjoying it. 😎😎 Very good album. Gonna put it into rotation for a while.

Overall I really enjoyed this album. The vocals were solid and the fusion of jazz with 80s synth waves made it stand out in a great way. Could see myself listening to this while I work or on an evening drive down the freeway. Definitely adding some of these songs to my library. The end of the album did bring the overall score down a bit, Night Train was a bit longer than it needed to be and Dust didn't match the rest of the album to me and was a bit slow. Favorite songs: While You See A Chance, Arc of a Diver Skips: Night Train, Dust

Favourite songs: Slowdown-Sundown, While You See a Chance, Arc of a Diver, Second-Hand Woman Least favourite songs: Spanish Dancer 4/5

Very fine

Fun Album, Nice tunes

I hadn't really known much about Steve Winwood's history as a musician before listening to this album. It's interesting that he was a member of so many relatively important bands before launching his solo career. The music is interesting as well. It's really embracing the synthesizer as an instrument, but still remains pretty rooted in guitar rock as well. I feel like most artists tended to go one way or the other. His voice is great and really matches the music well. The album goes by pretty fast, but it's consistently good, if not leaning a little far toward adult contemporary rock. I think that's more of a fault with how Steve Winwood influenced soft rock than it is a failing of his music, though 4/5

Steve Winwood's 1980 album "Arc of a Diver" is a musical masterpiece that transcends time and genre boundaries. As a solo effort, it marks a significant departure from his work with Traffic and Blind Faith, showcasing Winwood's unparalleled talent as a songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. The album opens with the ethereal "While You See a Chance," a track that immediately grabs your attention with its infectious melody and Winwood's soulful voice. The lyrics speak to hope, opportunity, and the eternal search for something better, setting the tone for the entire album. "Second-Hand Woman" is a funky, upbeat number that highlights Winwood's prowess on the Hammond organ and his ability to infuse blues and rock with a distinctive groove. The song's narrative about love and longing is delivered with a raw emotion that makes it impossible not to move to the music. "Arc of a Diver," the title track, is a sonic journey. The lush synthesizers and intricate guitar work create an otherworldly atmosphere, and Winwood's introspective lyrics invite listeners to reflect on life's twists and turns. This instrumental piece is a true gem that showcases Winwood's instrumental prowess. One of the standout tracks is "Spanish Dancer," a slow-burning ballad that oozes sensuality and passion. Winwood's voice here is filled with longing, and the song's sultry guitar solos add layers of emotion. It's a testament to Winwood's songwriting and vocal abilities that he can create such a deeply affecting track. "Night Train" brings a rockier edge to the album, with its driving rhythm and memorable guitar riffs. The song's lyrics are a testament to Winwood's songwriting maturity, exploring themes of escape and adventure. The album concludes with "Dust," a reflective and introspective song that features some of Winwood's most heartfelt vocals. It's a fitting ending to an album that has taken the listener on a sonic journey through love, longing, and self-discovery. Overall, "Arc of a Diver" is a timeless classic that showcases Steve Winwood's musical genius. His ability to blend genres, craft unforgettable melodies, and deliver emotionally charged vocals is on full display here. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering Steve Winwood for the first time, this album is a must-listen. Its songs are not just musical compositions; they are windows into the human experience, inviting us to explore the arc of our own lives.

Steve Winwood is a name that I definitely recognise but was struggling to place. The album art here is interesting, and has me wondering how an album can be based on the arc of a diver. It does leave me interested. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Second Hand Woman, Night Train I did some googling after a couple of tracks as I also recognised Steve’s voice. It turns out he was in Traffic, and also sang Higher Love, so that’s likely why I recognise him. I’m a big fan of a synth funk band called TWRP, and I think it’s highly likely that they could a lot of inspiration from Steve. The synths are fantastic, but that standout for this album was the excellent bass playing. It’s funky as hell. I liked this album a lot.

Steve played everything you hear on the album: lead and backing vocals, Prophet-5, Minimoog, Yamaha CS-80, Hammond B3 organ, Steinway piano, Ovation acoustic guitar, Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, Ibanez mandolin, bass guitar, Multimoog (also used for keyboard fretless bass), Hayman and Ludwig drums, Linn LM-1 programming, percussion, producer, engineer, mixing.

Surprisingly good blue Eyed soul, particularly strong opening track.

I appreciated the synths, they were of their time, but cool. Kind of had Steve Wonder vibes, his better more upbeat stuff, less of the shit balads.

So much synthesizer! And he played all of it! I was never a huge Steve Winwood fan, although I had a very good friend in college who was a strong, unabashed fan. This makes me think of her with more fondness than I have for this music. That said, the music is quite listenable, though “Second-Hand Woman” is somewhat… bizarre.

Steve Winwood is just okay for me...and so was this album.

Very synth-y, very 80s, reminiscent of a TV theme song written by Mike Post. Sounds like I didn't like it. And yet... I had a couple of moments of pure euphoria listening to this today. Really enjoyed the first listen but was done by the end of the second.

I liked it, cool/different rock. Kinda jazzy. 8.5/10

Really good songwriter

Sounds great. Not my style

Sounds like a soundtrack for any feel-good movie from the 90s

Very good! Standouts: While You See a Chance, Arc of a Diver, Others: Spanish Dancer, Second-Hand Woman, Slowdown Sundown, Night Train, Dust Score: 4/5

Oh man the most 80 s and most cheesy of the 80 s cheese. I loved it. Groovy and even though it sometimes sounds like a parody of 80 s music with all the synthesizer solos it was still enjoyable. Hadn't heard any of the songs before but after completing the album I immediately put it on again. If that isn't a recommendation I don't know what is. Only negative is the few tracks in the middle are not as good as the start and end of the album.

7/10. not super my style and not likely one i'll revisit, but this was nice and extremely well-done.

So 80s. Like Casio keyboard 80s. Except I just googled it and apparently the first Casio synthesizer came out in the mid-80s, which this album predates. Good job making these synths without a Casio, Steve! 7/10

Own on Vinyl

"See a Chance" is just instantly likable, and perhaps the decade's most radio-worthy cut. Title cut has always been a semi-secret fave, not bad or well-known enough to be a full-on guilty pleasure – just cool. "Spanish Dancer" sounds vaguely Steely Dan-ish or Nightfly-esque – mildly groovy and decently pleasant. But then there are a few embarrassments of the avert-one's-eyes variety. "Night Train" could have been the theme to Miami Vice and "Second-Hand Woman" works not at all – the artist himself might even support the cancellation of that particular cut for PC reasons. This does feel like the original Dad rock, maybe, or a Boomer transition into the era of Members Only jackets. Still, it's better than it seems it should be or perhaps deserve to be. In transitioning from the '80s, this record has been clearly damaged, but not terminally so. Overall, the feel is that the former wunderkind was ready to sell out but was a little unsure about how to do or perhaps diffident by nature and so sold out in an inoffensive sweet (and not a little cheesy sort of way).

Liked it.

fire 8/10

Just good songs. And lots of synth

Didn't know he was in Trafic

Easy listening but grabs your attention

Solid album. The first song is the only one that really did well on this album.

A nice familiar sound

Favourite song: Arc Of A Diver

It’s kind of goofy sounding now, but overall impressive from a “one man in the studio” perspective and pretty enjoyable throughout

Semi chill flera grooves

Didn’t expect this kind of funky 80s music from Steve Winwood. Pleasantly suprised

Mäkta bra pop

This is better than it seems it should be. First two cuts are both top-class, and hold up well. "Second-Hand Woman" is an embarrassment really, as much for the troglodytic content as for the hideously '80s hook and the thin disco beat. "Slowdown Sundown" and "Spanish Dancer" right the ship, but only briefly, until the Jan-Hammerian "Night Train," another time-traveler that feels ready to explode when contacting 21st-century air. Considering how one's never liked Winwood's way-back-in-the-throat voice, one's surprised to find this of substantial quality ... the pluses meaningfully outweigh the Ultimate '80s embarrassments.

Nice, had never heard it before

great album. Steve has always been a good listen

👍 git album

Liked it

Bravo pour la musique en sah (pas beaucoup plus a dire en particulier mais j'ai bien kiffé la vibe tah 80s et les ptits solos de synthé mama zboui zboui zbouiiiiiii)

I really like this album; I knew the first song right off the bat but i actually hadn’t heard any others and i thought they were really interesting.

This album - and in particular the lead single - will never not transport me to being a little kid / 1980 / good times. No way to remove the nostalgia from any objectivity in this one for me. In saying that, this is a highly melodic album with jazzy twists and turns. Nothing really comes close to matching the opening track "While You See a Chance" which is pretty much melodic softish-rock perfection, although the subsequent "Arc of a Diver" is a left-turn that showcases the best of Steve Winwood (who, incidentally, played all the instruments on this album). After a few ok tracks the album picks up again on the second half with "Spanish Dancer" and "Night Train" - the former stays restrained and the space keeps the tension throughout the song while "Night Train" has a catchy repetitive groove that works well. It's not perfect - I'm not a fan of the album closer "Dust" at all; could have used a better end to this album which overall is enjoyable. In particular I've always enjoyed the sound on this album - nice mix Steve. 7/10 4 stars.

This was a fun album. The first half was more fun than the second but it was funky and the keyboard synthesizer thing was used really well. It's the most 80s sounding instrument you can get but it sounds great here

i enjoyed this more than i thought i would. it’s not my favorite, but it is catchy and fun!

Every song is really good, they all seemed well polished. No duds on this album.

Incredible pop rock with soul notes. I enjoyed more than I admit this album.

While You See A Chance is a great track Synths are really well orchestrated and the drums are nice too Singing is well done I dont have a ton of bad things to say about this album. I really liked it which I wasnt expecting 7/10

I should buy a boat.

Hey I liked this! Synthy samples with a very 80s feel.

Seems like slightly proggy late 70s pop. Bit of a Phil Collins vibe. Very inoffensive, but not too sickly sweet. Lots of talent, good songwriting and tasteful players. Also, 39min is the perfect runtime for an album I've never heard before. 4/5.

80s synth cheese, yes I'm game. Got weaker as it went on but still enjoyable

fun listen, i got surprised by it and I enjoyed it :)

Soft rock really isn't my thing but this was much more enjoyable than I expected. Would definitely listen again, though I much prefer Winwood's earlier group work.

I should buy a boat.

Great album

I really like this album. Sounds like so many other influences, yet Steve Winwood is somehow so unique.

jag tycker om den! men vet inte om jag gör det eftersom han låter som phil collins? oklart, det låter jag vara osagt. men det svänger katten.

Unique sound, like someone was consciously trying to do an 80s sound after the 80s were over, sounds pretty influential considering when it was written.

A little psychedelic and synthy, but actually overall pretty good.

Sounds like Phill Collins. Enjoyed, nice and chill. Easy listening

Lovely album

Very nice album. Great vibe. Funky tunes. Liked the first couple tracks the most

I liked it. 👍

Interesting opener - until the vocals kick in, it sounds like the opening credits for an Eighventies sports show. It's also worth noting that I have a bit of a bias towards Brummie musicians... So this is unlikely to be entirely objective! Arc of a Diver has some strong Steely Dan vibes - and that's a good thing. The rest of the album washed over me as I worked. I am surprised at how poppy this is, given that my perception of Steve Winwood was more of a blues/rock/prog artist. More shocking is that it is good (but not great) pop. I had always assumed that Higher Love and Valerie were exceptions in his career, but it turns out he is actually a very talented pop writer - somewhere between Phil Collins and Donald Fagen. A surprisingly good album!

solid sound, got better with more listens.

Solid album with a very unique rock sound incorporating lots of piano and synth. Massive respect to him for playing every part on the album.

Nice album, great runtime and good mix of songs and instruments

Jammin' 80s pop. Can't ever go wrong with that.

Pretty good cheese rock

This album brought me joy in a 1 hour commute drive

So many songs I liked in the 80's and I never actually learned the name of the person.

I don’t like pop

Nothing else on the album nears the peak of "while you see a chance", but the album is largely enjoyable and though i'd skip second-hand woman if listening to it, and songs like night train find a great groove.

Good album. Impressive he played all the instruments on the album. I agree with the reviews not a 5. Its between 3.2 and 4.1.

Enjoyed this album more than expected. The first song has a unique start. Arc of a diver is a great song. All of the songs are better than they should be and the instrumentals pair well with winwoods singing style. 7.7/10

ha estado guapo la verdad me ha gustado bastante chill

Тупа чил. В начале оттолкнуло архаичными синтами, но потом ухо попривыкло. Вступительная While You See A Chance

Synthy, 80s soundtrack feel opening. But good melodies.

Parecido a Phil Collins. Un poco folk también. Le daré un 4.

Loved this! Great songs, awesome music, cool vocals. Super solid. 4.3

Enjoy the sound of his music

Would listen to more of Steve Winwood

solo artist. great mix of vocals, synths, drums. Really like the songs While you see a chance, arc of a diver, spanish dancer. Created in the artist's home.

I can feel the blues influences, however it also differentiates itself. An inspiring person and an inspiring album

3.5 stars for me.

So 80s it hurts my teeth. Some great tunes on here. More impressive when you find out her played every instrument himself. A few songs last a little longer than they should, and we could've skipped "Dust" all together. Also, "Spanish Dancer" legitimately sounds like a song from the Spyro soundtrack. Favorite tracks: "When You See a Chance", "Spanish Dancer"
