Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Had a hard time making it all the way through this one

This was ok, but it is outrageously long. It was wearing on me by about halfway through and I turned it off shortly after.

Couldn’t listen to this without my mind being distracted by other things, but it had a few good songs

I felt very meh about this one.

Felt very one-note and samey, which is very frustrating for a double album. In particular I thought the drumming was very sloppy and almost off-beat at certain points. A few solid enough songs, but a lot of forgettable material. Top tracks: Ice Cold Ice, Bed of Nails

An OK punkish alternative album that probably played a role in the development of 90s alternative. I can see some of these influences in some groups, but mostly ones I don't love, like the Gin Blossoms and others that kind of softened up the harder grunge and other alternative of the early 90s. That being said, these guys aren't quite that soft and don't have as many songs in major tones. I just don't find it super compelling or original, though. 2/5

Good album. A step into punk pop. Too commercial for my taste but still easy listening with a few good songs.

Husker Du had run out of steam by this album - too many songs that are ok, but no significant thrills. They had done all of this better, on previous albums.

Nothing stood out that much

Production quality is inconsistently ass. Thought my ear buds were dying at first but no, the album just sounds bad

Man. These guys really wanted to almost be REM.

I think I've become absolutely allergic to any type of average or mediocre rock between the 60s and 90s after starting to listen on this list. And sadly this record fits right in there. Apart from the song being completely non-present in the mix, that bad sounding or anything, just very boring. For a moment I actually thought it was the same band that made the theme song for the Friends TV show, as it had that kind of feeling painted all over it, albeit in a bit rockier fashion. In summary it was an extremely forgettable experience, apart perhaps from the wonky band name.

Ugh, “We got R.E.M type at home” type of music. First things first, the mixing is horrendous. I can’t pick out any instruments, all of it sounds samey, the drums sound flat the vocals are off. This was one boring slog, at the best of times it sounds like a mediocre R.E.M song. The only time I perked up was during “Ice Cold Ice” but the mixing made it hard to distinguish if the guitar riff was actually any good. We’ve had so much rock, especially from the late 80s and early 90s. This one makes nothing to leave a mark. If you like this type of music maybe cherry-pick “Ice Cold Ice” and “Could You Be The One” and go and listen to R.E.M instead. Weak 2 star.

Sort of repetitive. Not as thrilling as the cult of Husker Du would suggest. Inessential. I suspect the quest for a great American band promotes this. They sound bored and irritated. 2.5 stars.

Too long. Too repetitive. Boring. No thanks

What I imagine Billy Corgan's wet dreams sound like.

You can tell this band influenced Pixies and in turn the whole grunge explosion, but as much as i love those bands, this was a hard listen... Super long, very disorganised, and the good stuff is few and far between

Does sound like something your dads band would make in his garage during the weekend.

FAVO: Standing in the rain

I would have loved this back in the day when it was new. But now it’s just REM lite, without the stylistic experimentation. A double album without variety is DULL no matter how much you like the sound.

5/10 I knew of HD and this was nothing like what I expected - poppy post punk alternative rock. A lot of REM in there and quite a bit more accessible than expected. But this was inexcusably long. It needed to be 30 minutes shorter, I get that the bad was falling apart but no need to inflict their excess on us. That makes it baffling this is anywhere near a list like this: it’s too long and just not good enough. Best: Charity, Chastity, Prudence, and Hope

Forventa nåke anna

Too long and not as good as their other stuff

ganz lustig aber Ned so meins kp mehr wie die einzelnen Tracks waren

I suppose its not without merit but, no.

Very similar vibe to R.E.M., but IMO it's missing the secret sauce that made R.E.M.'s sad rock so easy to connect to. Songs feel rather same-y and blend together, and there's not enough dynamic contrast.

This is REM, right? A bad REM. Jangle balls

more 80's nonsense... bore

Eh. Not my vibe...

Pas mon style

Discount REM

Given this is 20 tracks long and over an hour, there were some definitely some dope moments. As a cohesive record though this was below average.

Ok I was vibing at first, then the album was too long and I started getting angry. I can’t understand a single word they are saying (I can’t really understand lyrics in general), but I’m sure it was just man stuff.

Some proper Americana type indie. There's something about the way it's mixed/produced that makes it hard to key in to. It's fine? I guess?

Meh. Yet another “how… why… why is this a must-hear album?” on this list. Nothing special at all.

It's basically listening to the same song over and over again for an hour straight. The song itself is fine but the length of the album is to it's detriment.

Kinda just a worse R.E.M. like they sound the same

Sounds kind of muddy. The songs are very repetitive without really standing out to me, and it was quite a long album. Didn't really enjoy this one. 2.5

What's with the super muddy production? I can't understand a word he's singing, and it makes the songs sound very similar. And there's 20 of them. 20!

I can hear the influence they had on future pop punk bands. Not for me though, didn't get much out of it.

I do like parts of the album but it goes on too long for how similar it is. I do like some songs that Husker Du puts out. I wanted to enjoy this one more.

Interesting album art. This opening track is all right. There are sonic similarities to R.E.M. I probably listened to bands influenced by these guys. I wish the recording had a more dynamic quality. The writing and compositions seem good but this production is terrible. It makes every song sound the same. It's way too long for what it is. I'd be curious if they have any better sounding albums. I had hoped to find another track that stood out but it never came.

Just like yesterday’s, this is an album I’d be more inclined to rate higher if it weren’t so long. I wasn’t at all in the right mood for this, and it was painful to get through

Like rem but I'm not an angsty teenager no more

not for me

This should really be in my wheelhouse, but it just kinda sucks? I’ve long heard of this band and never gotten around to them and this was frankly disappointing. It sounds like I should give earlier albums a shot, but I am concerned their songwriting approach of sing the titular lyric 85,000 times as a chorus is an annoying running theme. This album is for people who want a more energetic REM who either has nothing to say or whatever they have to say is so washed out in the mix you’ll never figure it out. Descendents did better pop punk and Pixies did better alternative. Not sure why neither of those didn’t displace this album. I have no idea who is hearing Barenaked Ladies in this, but considering it was mentioned as a positive in that review I’m assuming that person was born deaf with terminally shit taste anyway.

I don’t know what to say about this one, it barely held my attention. Not to be completely unfair as I could tell there were some diamonds in the rough but finding them would require me to relisten which I have no desire to do. As a band unit they definitely shone but the repetition in songwriting and production was too fatiguing. I hadn’t listened to the band before and I will give them another chance with their earlier, more seminal work. Rating: 2.0

Dio fa

Loud and noisy, feels like an early Brit Pop album sometimes.

Listened: 11/02/2025 Album no: 18 % rating: 54% Fave Song: Well well well. I‘d managed to avoid listening to Husker Du for years but here we are 😂 These guys walked so bands like Hot Water Music could run. And while I appreciate that this is some early origins of that, this just ain’t for me. I do like how the lyrics are more telling a story, and some of the guitar riffs are super fun with some big breathy chords. I’d have listened to these 15 years ago I’d have loved them, but in 2025 I’ve moved on.

Nothing super interesting here, I mostly listened to this in the background and didn't enjoy the sound much. I think 2 star

Highlight of this album for me was "She Floated Away," which sounded a bit like an Irish folk tune. Still, there are far better celtic-punk bands to listen to for that sort of thing (The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly). The production is fatiguing for the ears. The guitars are so top-heavy that they mask a lot of the vocals as well as cymbals. The melodies are more pop-oriented than I expected, like a spritual precursor to the pop-punk of Green Day. Overall, I did not enjoy this album, though it wasn't horrible. 2 stars.

Mag ich ich gar nicht

There's probably a good single album in there somewhere, but this double album is too long, too samey, and sports a particularly bad sound mix.

4/10 Favorite Tracks: None Least Favorite: None

Unless it’s the Beatles, any story that starts with “they broke up after this album” usually doesn’t bode well for posterity. This album was just eh. Didn’t have the edge that made Hüsksr Dü cool and it was way too long for the style. Worse version of EEM was Ana pt analogy.

Might have gotten a 3 if it was half the length. Couple of fun songs, but really just goes on and on with the same sound.

Netter Rock, aber nichts was mich vom Hocker gehauen hat 2-3/5

Sounds like live REM demos and goes on way too long.

Just some below average late 80s pop-punk album. A less good R.E.M. and the album goes on too long. 4/10 (2/5)

No, I don’t want to listen to over an hour of bickering boys in their late 20, making middle of the road “punk” music in 1987.

Never heard of them before. Now I know why! Nothing remarkable. Musically O.K. but every song sounds the same and therefore the whole album is much too long. 1,5

2 sterne

Just a bunch of noise rock/ alternative rock, with a slight edge of punk and power pop. Overall not really memorable and too long. 2.5

Dü dü 1.5

went on way too long, very similar sounding throughout, not for me, too radio friendly

2.3 In small parts (eg standing in the rain) they sounded like a fairly decent REM cover band, but for the most part (eg bed of nails) it sounded like someone trying to take the piss out of REM. Shocked to see they started around the same time and indepedently of them. Not one to usually reference memes, but this is probably the perfect "we have REM at home" example. Thank Christ that's over.

a 1 hr 9 min song.

Oh man... the songs are so similar to each other that I can't even tell when one is over and the next starts

What can Hüsker Dü? They can fück off.

Boring alternative rock

It was great to try to hook with this album and ending up in a completely zoned-out corner of my mind, just wondering if I'm trapped in the same song forever and ever.

“Standing in the rain” bruh you were late and she was on time, she prolly left after waiting a long time. Who’s the inconsiderate one here? Anyways, I don’t hate this album, it’s just that this sound gets a little stale after like the 4th song. I wish there were more peaks and valleys, but you just kinda stay at this plateau the entire time. I did like “She Floated Away” it caught my interest more than a lot of the others. The biggest thing this album does right is the writing, I enjoyed all the different metaphors and felt that they were pretty successful. Also, maybe I just don’t understand music production, but some of this mixing is so muddy and the vocals get lost in the sauce. I could just be ignorant to a certain “sound” tho. 2/5

Ok music. Heard a lot about this band but had never taken time to listen.

3 songs was enough. Crap

Turned it on and immediately tuned it out.

Boring

This was difficult to listen to and enjoy. A lot of the songs sound very similar and it just kind of coalesces into indistinguishable noise. Tough one.

All kind of the same

I had a good streak going for a while, but I just wasn't feeling this one.

I don't like reggae

So... idk. Guess it didn't work like it was supposed to

okay so musically I liked their style and feel. Their voices however, were painful. They cannot sing. The background vocals sounded great though, especially on "Ice Cold Ice" and "Up in the Air". However the main vocalists sounded downright bad. And then there's the length. You make me sit through an hour and 9 minute long album, I want some variety to spice it up. This album had none of that, it was the same stuff over and over and over again. Nothing fresh or new later in the album that they hadn't already done earlier. Not a fan of that.

What a boring album. Must listen!? I don't think so. So generic and boring. Nothing special.

It’s like a cover band of R.E.M songs but they don’t know any R.E.M songs. Also it’s way to fucking long. 4/10

If REM were shit.

This album hits like flat beer on a cloudy day.

They would have actually ruled live. Not so much on disc. Fairly one-dimensional

Double album. Why?!

Why is it twenty songs? I'm not mad at what I'm hearing, but I enjoy some songs slightly more then others.

Was ok

Langweilig.

Alright but not really holding my interest

Forgettable, generic 90s rock.

Wasn't really feeling this one. Probably a good opening band for REM, but this album doesn't belong on this list. My impression is that indie rock really struggled in the early to mid-80s, until bands like U2 and REM really found their footing.

Pre: I obviously know Husker Du and have liked and appreciated Bob Mould and Grant Hart's post-HD stuff, but the band itself has never been my favorite. I respect what they did, but their music rarely catches me (except for Statues, which is one of the best punk singles ever). All that said I'm fairly certain I've somehow never listened to this album before. The spotify description listed them as post-punk and a bridge to poppier stuff in the 90s. That actually helps me contextualize their music and appreciate it a bit more Bed of Nails caught my ear, I liked that one. I caught some vibes in there that reminded me of (the much more on-her-sleeve) Trans Mantra by Ezra Furman. I know not everything is about gender or sexual identity, but in retrospect maybe Bob was dropping some pretty big hints. Anyway, good song, it's one of the few that made me stop and listen. Overall I have a tremendous respect for Husker Du but the album didn't do a ton for me.

Nothing wrong with this album, but not a whole bunch like, really, RIGHT about this album either. I know lots of folks that love Husker DU, I think they are mostly just bland.

This album is just too long and samey for me to get into all that much. I think Hüsker Dü's are at their best when they're sounding a bit gruffer and lean more hardcore. Zen Arcade is peak

This album has an interesting sound. 1987 alt rock/punk with really interesting production tones- like the drums are some of the brightest/thinnest sounds I think I've ever heard on a rock record. The kick sounds like it's triggered and it makes it really stand out in the mix but I don't think in a good way? It allows room for the bass to be more present- which is great, but this type of sound is usually more raw and less polished and I feel like these drums sound kind of clamped down? I want to like this more because it reminds me of early skate punk at times but it just feels like it doesn't know what it wants to do. It's trying to do A while also doing B, and both of those conventionally conflict with eachother and not in a cool experimental way. I'll give it another try at some point but I don't find myself coming back right away.

Very mid, all sounds the same

Not for me

Spent most of the album waiting for it to end. But there was always another song.

Sigh, another day and another late 80s early 90s generic rock album that only made the list because the author was a prisoner of the moment. I ended this one completely impressionless and bored. People should be meaner to these albums.

Wow this sucks. Some of the instrumentation is OK but overall just bland and annoying. 1.5

tiresome. too long.

The production, vocals, instrumentation, lyrics, and writing are not nearly good enough to warrant a seventy minute album. 2/5

I always though Husker Du was more of a hardcore band. Another double album? Come on, music critics. Just because a band you like made a bunch of songs all at once doesn't make it good. It's so hard to make a single good album, why do so many artists think a double album is a good idea? This is more like a grunge album so far. I'm not sure why everyone thought that Nirvana and Pearl Jam were so ground breaking at the time. These guys and the Pixies were doing something similar before the grunge explosion. This is much better than I anticipated, at least I like it more than I expected. I think their name threw me off. I don't know why this wasn't more mainstream, maybe before their time with grunge or after their time with punk? The lead singer sounds like the guy from Barenaked Ladies. This is completely forgettable but there are a million 90s bands that owe these guys a huge debt of gratitude. She Floated Away could be a Pogues song from Rum, Sodomy and the Lash. If this album was the soundtrack to a 1987 version of the movie Singles, it would have changed the trajectory of so many bands and music history. This is starting to drag a little. Maybe "post-punk" is making more sense to me now because I can hear how someone would think this album sounds like REM in spots. You Can Live at Home sounds like a Talking Heads song, the bass line and vocals are clearly imitations, or "influenced by", them.

The vocals and songwriting are both rather ho-hum. It's OK I guess

Much like 'Zen Arcade', a collection of tracks that was made for the stage, not so much for the recordings, stretched out to unnecessary length where even the most outstanding songs start blending in and becoming mush.

Double albums are almost never a good choice over choosing half as many of the best songs. Pick any 8-10 songs and this would be a 3 star album. But it just drones on and on and on.

You can leave this home.

Pretty tough to get through. It’s about 70 minutes, 20 songs and most of them sound the same. Vocals sound creaky in a Roy Woodish kind of way and the riffs just do the same sludgy thrashy jangle kinda thing. Standing In The Rain jumps out early on as a quality tune but after that highlights were hard to find. Actual Condition has a slight retro rockabilly 50s diner feel that doesn’t really fit and probably the song I liked the least. 2.5 stars.

This feels like going to a pub and there's a band playing - you didn't go there to see them but there they are. At first it's like, alright nice some music would be cool, but half an hour into the gig you've had enough.

Never heard of the band before..some tracks sound very alike, and it's a long album... liked some.. not all.

me if i was an album that sucked ass:

Let me get this out of the way, it’s not THAT bad. I like the classic rock sounds that remind me of the likes of Styx and other great 80’s rock bands. However, this album feels like it’s trying too hard to replicate that 80’s rock band fame. The vocals, as many have pointed out, are pretty abysmal, sounding close to an REM ripoff but bad. Also, the production and mixing on this record is… wow. How did this get through to the final product? The lyrics are obviously as cheesy as 80’s gets. This album feels like it’s taking everything from the 80’s, but mostly the bad stuff.

This album reads like a freshman English lit paper. Boring, unoriginal, and about 3 times too long. They maybe had enough ideas for a decent single, so they made it into an entire lousy album. 2 stars due to failure to edit.

Hüsker Dü has always been one of those you’re-supposed-to-like-this-band bands, like Gang of Four or Radiohead, that I just never saw the appeal of. I appreciate that the book picked their last album where they’d apparently softened up quite a bit, and I suppose I liked this more than “Zen Arcade”, although I don’t remember much about it other than it being noisy and abrasive and sucking, but even at their poppiest, Hüsker Dü aren’t poppy enough for me. “It’s Not Peculiar” was pretty decent. Look, I’d be angry if I lived in Minnesota too, but you don’t have to put that evil on me Ricky Bobby. Just go back to your igloo and drink your Molsen with the Gundersons and the Olaffsens and say “you betcha” a bunch. Don’t make a bunch of cranky aggro albums that I have to listen to in order to be considered a true music fan.

interesting album with some variation but still relatively straightforward

Try as I might, I just don't get the appeal of Husker Du or any of Bob Mould's projects. I get that they were supposed to have been a hugely influential band but I really don't hear it (Ok, yes it does sound a bit like early R.E.M. but not nearly as good). 'Warehouse' has its occasional moments ('Ice Cold Ice' stands out) but for the most part I just don't feel much of anything listening to it. A lot of it just sounds like a dime-a-dozen local indie rock band who should keep trying. Maybe I'm judging it too much against all of the indie rock that would follow and not seeing it enough in the context of its release. The length definitely doesn't do it any favors. Cutting out the weakest 40 minutes could have persuaded me to give it 3 stars. Apologies to any fans of Husker Du. I tried, but it's just not doing much for me.

I want to like this, but I can't get all the way there. There are plenty of moments that start to build to a good jam, but then end up as frustrating or repetitive. It also feels a bit too scruffy for my taste. I'd love a bit more musicality. If there was a 2.5 option I'd use that, as 2 feels a tad harsh.

REM if the R stood for Rock. Fine, absolutely never listening to this on purpose again but it didn’t irritate me and I tried every track.

Though the album is awash with both intrapersonal conflict on top of their manager's suicide, the album comes off fairly plain. A bit long to make the whole thing enjoyable, but this was clearly precipitated as the last album of the band. Definitely some notes of grunge and alternative music, but not a major player from what I can tell

so insanely generic, 1.5

2/5. 90's rock. A mix of REM and Nirvana. I mean, sure I'm not gonna say it's bad, respectfully there is some great songwriting here. The album length, I felt so drained by the end of it, like I was expecting something new and it just blended all together. I read that there was a fight between the two songwriters. They should have just released their own album with each of their songs. This just feels like too much, I might pick and choose my favorite songs and make an album that way. As is, it's kind of hard to listen to but not awful. Best Song: Could You Be The One?, Ice Cold Ice, Visionary

Not great.

Not great.

Too long. A little all over the place. Mixing/production (I'm not a music guy) is abysmal. Vocals inaudible on half the tracks

I get it, acclaimed as stand-out alt-punk pioneers of the 80's, these guys were name-checked continuously by all the rock critics even through the grunge epidemic. Maybe they would also say Bob Mould and Grant Hart informed the Minneapolis sound and the evolution of pop-punk towards grunge, through I would consider them as a less polished and produced Green Day or The Offspring or whatever. Even though I remember hearing that hype I never got into them (probably due to the fact I was a 4AD dweeb the whole time). To the credit of actual punk composition it's fierce, fast and short, which this record is not.

Didn't love it.

Kind of feel likes a budget REM album

"Ice Cold Ice" is the best track on the album. Besides that track, it's pretty bland. I don't think it deserves the place on the list.

This is definitely post-punk rock. It's not that it's bad or anything, but I'm just not a fan of the singing style and many of the tracks bleed together for me.

I made the mistake of reading one of the reviews before I listened who basically called this a shit REM album and unfortunately it was too accurate for me to hear anything else.

Middle-of-the road. Background music.

Was expecting something electronica based, instead it's aggressively middle of the road soft rock. ok to mildly head nod to 2.3

Kind of gross and unenjoyable. Very 80s, but also feels a bit 90s. Which is not great.

Didn't like the sound

By far the worst production of any album so far

This isn't really an album that I would expect to find on this list. About halfway through, and this is good, but I'm not sure what makes this so special or important to be here. Yeah, this is fine, but it's not great. The novelty of the singing gets old pretty quick for me. The guitar playing and distortion is pretty nice, though.

At the begging I thought it was pink like Ramones punk, quick and dirty. But it's long and boring...

More of the interesting albums, less of this. Favourite track: She Floated Away.

We go now to the internal thinkings of Robert Dimery as he assembled the list of 1,001 album you must listen to: - We should add a reggae album - you mean the music crafted on the Caribbean island of Jamaica that was pioneered by such greats as Bob Marley, Toots and the Maytals, Peter Tosh, and Steel Pulse? - Yeah! We should totally add some reggae. How about a random guy from Scotland that nobody has heard of but blends the reggae with all of the bad tropes that are associated with Reggae - You mean, you don't want to add an actual Reggae superstar? - But he's from the UK! - 👀 2/5

Im sure this will ruffle some feathers but here we go... Sounds very in the same vein as early REM, in fact if you told me this was REM with a different singer I would believe it. Also much like early REM this is incredibly overrated. 1 decent tune out of a sea of 20 so so songs doesnt make for a must listen. Jesus, there were 20 songs on this. Granted they are very short songs, thankfully.

jesus christ what a slog this was, so long and with no reason to be. youd have at least hoped that in doing this many songs theyd get the production right at least once, alas!

Tällä levyllä ei meinaa huomata biisin vaihtumista ja tuntuu kuin olis kuunnellut 69min samaa biisiä.

Rem teki sen paremmin

I’ve heard a decent amount of Hüsker Dü before, but their sound still continues to surprise me each time. Before listening, I assumed they were metal based on their band name (the umlauts mainly) and even some song titles (“Masochism World”, “59 Times the Pain”, “Bed of Nails”), but their genre sounds much more like alternative rock or slightly punky rock in the vein of R.E.M. or Pixies albeit much less experimental or interesting (not that I particularly love either R.E.M. or Pixies). I think on average of everything I’ve listened to by these 3 bands, I maybe rate Hüsker Dü higher than R.E.M. and slightly lower than Pixies, but I’ve certainly heard much better and much worse by those bands. Hüsker Dü is consistently mediocre, despite their shift from harder punk on Zen Arcade to this much more mundane shit on Warehouse. I think these 3 bands are also great bridges from punk to grunge, Hüsker Dü more so than the others.

very samey

Not my cup of tea

Hardcore’s most boring ~important~ band spends a long, mostly boring double album telling you how important they think they are because they’re not *just* a hardcore band. I’d prefer Zen Arcade being on here over this, even though I’m not a fan of that record much, either. If even the band thinks it would’ve been stronger as a single LP, that’s a tell.

Found it repetitive and unenjoyable. Uninspired vocals for the most part.

This album didn't really do anything for me. I found it mostly boring and struggled to pay attention to it. The music didn't do enough interesting things to hold me and it just kind of washed into the background. I don't think it's bad and it aged pretty well and could fit into a much more recent indie scene without much issue. Reminds me of Dinosaur Jr, who I have similar feelings on. My favorite was probably Ice Cold Ice.

I like Punk but I've never been able to get into the hardcore scene. I can appreciate the technical skill and the lyrical message but I just would not choose to listen to this of my own volition.

what is this dusty, flavorless, flat soda of an album? why did i have to listen to it before I died? It made me feel like I was dying. so confused. there's nothing here. it was like a pile of dry hay blowing away in the wind.

why is it that every double album seems to have less to say than any regular album? this just didn't go anywhere or try anything interesting. it was listening to the same song twenty times over an hour and change. that one song was fine, i suppose, but an actual R.E.M. cover band would've been better. shame, too, as i like some other husker du songs I've heard before like Pink Turns to Blue from Zen Arcade. favorites: these important years, ice cold ice

I like the idea of Husker Du... But it's all pretty boring. One gear.

Netvso ganz meins

A fairly uninspiring collection of post-punk sameyness. Not terrible, but goes on for too long.

Nothing special - not even sure why it made the 1001 list.

Pas venu me chercher plus qu'il faut. Pas dégueux, mais pas si fou.

This is a long, boring, agitating album. Not a good Hüsker album. Why is it taking up space on this list. 5/10 Sonic youth without talent.

I wasn't impressed. 2,5/5

Surprised this was recorded in the 80’s. Some of it sounds like the gin blossoms, or maybe bare naked ladies? Anyway, the first half sounds very 90’s. Kinda generic sounding to me.

This might be a top 3 most forgettable album I’ve gotten so far, which is saying something. I can barely even describe it because there truly was nothing for me to latch onto. Just 70 minutes of rock noise. Maybe like if REM had no defining characteristics? Idk.

not a big husker dü fan.

I could have Hüsker Düne with less of these songs. 2/5

I don't really get why they chose this album over some of their others. This one really just needs to end much sooner than it does. Will I listen to again: 5%

p572. 1987. 2 stars. Average garage band that desperately wants to be REM, but lack the talent or songs. Nothing of interest here. Why is this even on the list?

I really want to love Husker Du, but each time I listen it just doesn't speak to me the same way The Replacements or other contemporaries do. This one is even below average for what I have heard. 2.5/5

Doesn't make my type (but good, anyway) :-)

Great album!

Husker Du shifts from post-hardcore to power pop. With their jangly and high distortion fuzz, and a similar-sounding front vocalist, it's like the distorted, noisier cousin of REM. I'm sure it influenced much of 90s power pop like Teenage Fanclub. It's a disappointing followup compared to Zen Arcade since it's more repetitive and less genuine, favoring a more commercial, predictable pop sound. There were a lot of duds, and dragged on way too long. The length was fine for Zen Arcade since it had reoccurring themes and epic drawn-out tracks, but there's not much of an excuse for 20 pop tracks, half of which offered very little. I'm a huge fan of their noise rock sound, so they're still leagues better than more generic alt rock bands, but this record missed out on a lot of potential. Take the first 7 tracks and replace "You're a Soldier" with "She Floated Away" and I'd almost give it a 4 as an EP, but it'd still come off as clustered and unfinished. Favorites: Back from Somewhere, Ice Cold Ice, Could You Be The One, She Floated Away

A cynic might say this is just the same basic song 20 times over. A more sympathetic reading would be that it’s the same 5 basic songs 4 times over. Either way, the album’s too long to carry such little variety. A shame, as the best bits (the minor key tunes, mostly) are pretty good. If I was around when this came out, back when jagged guitar music was in shorter supply, maybe I’d have been a fan. 2.5

Jooh ihan vitunmoine urakka albumi ja soundi ei huhhuh on kyllä urakka kuunnella... Siitä vain sen että.. vuoh vouh.. huh... huh... On muuten.. Aika moien power pop yhtye ja saa kyllä huhhuh kuunnella..

Another "advent of punk" album? Ice cold ice kind of reminds me of Green Day, lots of it reminds me of REM. Meh overall, why is this here, 2*.

didn't really feel this one...

Songs range from bad to meh.

Not my favorite. Spotify compared them to REM, which I can see, but it seems like they took a screamier approach while REM took a mellower approach. I can also see why one became mega popular and the other became a cult favorite only.

Greatly unremarkable

One or two curious moments but the album felt overall too long and uninteresting

Long ass album, and not good enough to be this long.

Another album that I can understand why it's on the list but isn't great start to finish. 90's alternative rock before the 90's, and I can hear the influence on lots of other bands I like much more. I'll give their other albums a listen, though. 2/5

The runtime, title and the contents of this album would have me thinking it was a rarities compilation released for the hardcore fans only. Suffice to say, I do not find it essential or even good. 2.1

Like a lower-quality REM and went on a bit

A bit boring…

These Important Years // Standing in the Rain // She Floated Away //

As a college student in Minnesota in the '80s, Hüsker Dü was a well-known name. However, I couldn't have told you much of anything about their music. Turns out I didn't find anything memorable in this long, long repetitive album. I didn't enjoy it. I will say that it definitely anticipated the explosion of "alternative" music in the 90s, but I was never really into that.

Already forgotten everything about this album

Sometimes niche bands are niche for a reason

Hüsker Dönt make me listen to this again. REM meets They Might Be Giants without the comedy or wholesomeness.

#60. Me: Mom, can we get REM? Mom: we have REM at home. The REM at home: [this] This album sounds a lot like REM. I fucking hate REM. I think its too bad this album was the one chosen for this list, because afterward, I listened to some of their earlier stuff and it's some pretty decent punk stuff. Why the chose to evolve from that into wish.com REM is beyond me. Shame, really. 2/5: meh

Warehouse: Songs and Stories is the sixth and final album by American punk rock band Hüsker Dü. It is an alternative rock double album that was majority rated as a good record. The band broke up after the tour for this album because the two songwriters, Bob Mould and Grant Hart, were feuding over the latter's drug use. The reason this is a double album is also because these two songwriters could not decide on which songs to cut or include. I thought this was a decent alt rock album, but it has been marred by the breakup of the band.

Innocent enough pop rock that does virtually nothing for me. This kind of music should probably stay in the Farrelly brothers movies it was originally used in. I know for certain I didn't need an hour and nine minutes of it.

I tried to connect to this band that so many others seem to be influenced by, but just couldn’t Dü it in the end.

Creative, and I applaud their strong ideas. But it's too sloppy for me.

Mom, can we have REM? Mom: No, we have REM at home. REM at home:

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: no, not really my thing Favourite song: didn’t have one

5/10 s'essoufle a partir de la moitié

too overdone

Bob Mould was right - “Warehouse would have made more impact if it was paired down to a single record...” It feels middle-of-the-road (spot the REM and The Replacements influences) and was a slog to listen to. Overall: 3/10

More Indie Rock. OKish, but too long. The songwrighting leaves a lot to be desired ... like good songs. All tracks sound alike, and there is not enough variation to make this even remotely interesting. *sigh* 2/5

So samey, so long

I guess if you like Nirvana-era grunge you'll probably love this. I found it a bit monotonous, especially the voice. I get that they are trying to do a more melodic version of US Hardcore, but what it gains in terms of 'tunes', it seems to lose in terms of energy. Bland.

The 80s had a lot of bands which had a budget aesthetic. They sounded like they were either recorded in a garage with no mixing whatsoever or performed in a beer hall where they can't hear themselves. This is one of those albums.

Kakkosen ja kolmosen välis. Koska annan nykyään vaan kolmosii, nii annetaa kakkonen

I know lots of bands influenced by Husker Du but had not got round to dipping in so this was my first effort. I get the energy and the sound but this is a dreary album of standard songs. I found it hard going for an hour. It's boilerplate indie rock from the 80s. I guess one of the things about being influenced is taking a sound/attitude and building on it to make it a lot better.

Every song reminds me of the Friends theme tune.

Not my thing

This album is 70 minutes long. It did not need to be this long. It isn't bad music but it isn't good. Best to describe it as punk. No need to listen to in the first place definite no need to revisit.

This is practically blasphemy given the regard in which Hüsker Dü are held by middle aged white indie-loving guys like me, but I found this distinctly mediocre.

ok, i'm not listening to 20 songs of this. not happening. it's alright for the first few but this ain't good.

Shades of Elvis Costello but not in a good way. This guys voice really bugged me

C These Important Years 2 Charity, Chastity, Prudence, and Hope 2 Standing In the Rain 3 Back from Somewhere 2 Ice Cold Ice 3 You're a Soldier 2 Could You Be the One? 3 Too Much Spice 3 Friend, You've Got to Fall 2 Visionary 1 She Floated Away 2 Bed of Nails 2 Tell You Why Tomorrow 3 It's Not Peculiar 3 Actual Condition 2 No Reservations 2 Turn It Around 2 She's a Woman (And Now He Is a Man) 2 Up In the Air 2 You Can Live At Home 2 This sounded like the soundtrack to a bad Freddie Prinze Jr. movie.

what the fuck? why did i think husker du were darker than this? this is like halfway between dinosaur junior and REM and i not in a particularly good way.

Bit wet

hüsker dü, bob mould, and sugar are superb. they were influential and pioneering. this is one of their least representative and least significant releases

Always found the guitar in this to have way too much treble.

I was looking forward to this after listening to REM and Pixies from a similar time, but it actually didn’t resonate with me at all. I didn’t like the production, and the album felt too long with no variety. The album has 20 songs but I didn’t find any of them memorable at all.

Genre: Noise is correct. I really don't like the main singer and the background singers make it even worse. This type of music to me just seems so generic and all of the songs sound the same

The band name just reminds me of Joe Dirt when he's listing off the different fireworks. Husker Do's Husker Don'ts. I don't think Husker Du is for me. Had some alright instrumentals but will not be coming back.

Warehouse: Songs And Stories answers the question “What if an album sounded like REM but muddier?” The mixing on this was so bad that songs were a chore to listen to. The tempo combined with the muddled sound felt exhausting, which is too bad because there were some catchy parts here and there.

I can see why some people love this. But for me, I could barely get passed the production choices, let alone the singer's voices. There were some nice songs, but it was a challenging one for me. This is close to 3 but not quite there.

Always been a big Bob Mould fan. Album was a bit too long for me.

This was actually a bit of a chore to get through. The guitars are relentless, and I find that very tiring. I will say that the second half was considerably easier than the first.

Aburrido

Overly long, moments of "Oh hey, yeah, it's like pop punk" weren't enough to sustain me.

mmmmmmm...

Alternativ indie rock, poppunk, 80’er, ikke rigtig fedt

Pleasant, easy to listen to alternative rock / punk rock. I like the music style, but the album is really nothing extraordinary.

Like a shittier REM with worse song writing.

Album 17 of 1001 Hüsker Dü - Warehouse: Songs and Stories. Favorite Track : Rating : 2 / 5 This was a fair attempt. There was something going on here, but it just didn't ever fully take off, for me. I didn't "not" enjoy it. Some tracks seemed promising while others should never be heard in a public setting.

Had this back-to-back with Speakerboxx/The love Below by Outkast. One of them was a double album that varied all the way through and kept me interested. The other was like listening to the same REM knockoff song on repeat.

No thanks

I’m happy about this pick, I have been meaning to listen to Husker Du for a while. I see them credited with having a lot of influence on melodic punk music. Guitar sounds don’t really hold up on the first song. First song reminds me of REM? Guitar tone on the second song sounds better. It’s weird how these guys were supposed to be pioneers but the melodies here sound so 80s. Transition on the intro of ice cold ice is cool, easily my favorite song so far. Closer way too long. Album way too long in general, this could have been like 10 songs. Even so, a lot of them feel unfinished. Cover art: 6/10 colors are cool but what is that picture

Hüsker dü? More like Hüsker I didn’t really vibe with this albüm

What can I say… Tbh I hate this. It’s whiny and cheesy and sounds like royalty free skatepark music. I’m suprised by how much I’m not liking it but I really can’t even make it through I get how this can be appealing for sure…but not rn

Come on, Huesker Due, you have to try harder to get a one star rating from me. Got very close, though.

I feel very ambivalent towards this one. It had some ok highs and some meh lows but was overall cohesive as an album. It could’ve definitely been shortened by a couple songs though. It wasn’t a bad listen but not something I think I would really come back to for anything.

Honestly not bad. Knocked a star off because the album is wayyy too long, could easily have been cut in half without losing anything though. Every first 30sec or so feels like it could be the intro to a late 90s/early 2000s sitcom. Tough to decipher the lyrics but I'd listen again (to half) because I feel like their could be more nuance and depth to this than can be found on a single listen.

Enjoyed it - won't be going back, but it is like REM without the whining overtones

Not much to say, late 80’s rock, can see some Bruce Springsteen inspiration.

I didnt finish the album and dont feel the need to.

The album cover makes me think of this steak restaurant in Jackson Mississippi I've been to a couple times that looks abandoned from the outside and partially weirdly Greek and fancy and partially abandoned on the inside. Pretty good steak, though. The album, sadly, not so much. The music makes me think of both Barenaked Ladies and R.E.M. in turns. So I should really like it but actually it's just boring. I don't see the argument for this album(s) being on this list. Just pick any single song at random to listen to and you pretty much have the whole thing covered.

Clearly heralded a lot of how 90s rock ended up going, though I think I prefer other acts occupying that space. The particular guitar tone they lean on really grates on me after a while, and this one was a double album

eh. warehouse: songs and stories was an okay album that didn't wasn't remarkable. it wasn't bad music but the lyrics were just okay, the vocalist wasn't impressive, and the music was fine. this album was released in the age of hair metal. if i put money on when this album was released, it would be the mid nineties, not 1987. is this album on the list because it was ahead of its time? i guess, but ehhh.

Another album where I have to question its place on here. It does sound like a lot of things that were yet to come at this point in music history. For instance, parts of this album do a good job sounding like 2000s pop punk in both instrumentation and lyrics. Other parts sound like early 90s alternative, not unlike Stone Temple Pilots, Barenaked Ladies, or even Hootie & the Blowfish. I could see where some inspirations for these sounds may have been derived from this album. Other parts of this album just sound like a generally washed up attempt at punk, though. It was another that was okay and mostly listenable. But overall, it feels pretty unremarkable, and the longer it went on, the less patience I had for it. It just didn't need to be a double album. This is another 2.-something that I just don't feel like warrants a rounding up.

not my vibe kinda repetitive to me but that’s maybe just the state of mind i was in whole listening, was kinda tired fav songs?: ice cold ice, bed of nails

I like the energy of Zen Arcade a bit more. With half as many tracks this is a solid 3. 2.5/5

Not for me.

Snarly and alternative without landing any amazing hooks. I enjoyed listening to the album and deciding which of the two alpha wolves wrote each song, but it did feel like the burnout of a relationship. Hmm. Leaving me feeling a little empty.

Nothing really exciting here. Guitarist and drummer both rely to heavily on the same motifs and end up being repetitive.

I hadn't listened to this before, but I have listened to one of their earlier albums and never really got into it. Same for this one really, the guitar tone is too sharp for me and the singing isn't great at all. I found it quite repetitive; a few songs stuck out a bit for me but nothing particularly memorable. Too long as well!

This is fine. Fairly lively. Sounds a bit like REM. Quite long and very samey. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Ice Cold Ice Date listened: 14/12/22

Wow. They changed a lot of same sounding crap in here... Like a lot. And this sounds like shit too which really doesn't help.

Just Rock.

Great guitar playing but when it is repeated 20 times without any real progression I get bored.

Girl who lives on heaven hill och books about UFOs är inte här!!!!??!?!!

Nää. Ja minns int!

Helt bra sound, kändes dock tre gånger för långt. Första halvan var inte alls lika unik eller bra som andra, vilket jag tror fick skivan att bli så långtråkig. Sångaren var inte riktigt min jam heller ...

Kinda meh. tuned out at the halfway point. First Listen?: Y Fav. Track(s): --- Rating: 2/5

Kind of boring, honestly. I prefer Zen Arcade.

Didn't really feel it with this one, I imagine they could be fun live but 🤷

just okay to me, typically 80's rock sound.

Não achei interessante como disco duplo, até parecia como REM, mas sem consistência.

Rating: 5/10 Best songs:

mais c’est quoi ca encore jen peux plus

Not for me.

This sounds like what would happen if R.E.M. wrote the theme to "Friends" while Michael Stipe was out of town. Everything about this album screams "generic late-80s rock band" in the most lame way possible. The jangly guitars, the pointless lyrics, the painfully repetitive drum beats, and the bad vocals... it's just not good.

Something about the voice and the sound is basic about Husker Du. It's good, bog standard alt rock, but I've heard and got bored of so many copycats that this sound is dull. Sorry Bob, not into it.

Best Song: Charity, Chastity, Prudence, and Hope. Over the course of the song, I went from disliking the vocal chorus to having it drilled so far into my brain I couldn't help but like it. Worst Song: Actual Condition. The Elvis affectation isn't working. Overall: 20 songs straight from the inoffensive middle ground. Painfully straightforward, after the first track you have a pretty clear idea of what the next 19 are going to sound like.

when i started listening i wondered why this album is on the list. Then i read the wiki and from what i understand, its mainly its historical value that puts it here. The music isn't bad and the lyrical songwriting pretty good but overal forgettable

Hard to follow up to their peak of Zen Arcade (and what would have been its impact if the production was better). I still prefer Candy Apple Grey for personal reasons. Warehouse is bloated.

Bit bored

Husker Dön't? Many of my friends with excellent good tastes like Hüsker Dü, so I'm missing something.

An interminably long record from what appears to be an R.E.M. cover band using umlauts in their name, even though they're from Minnesota. If you're going to make an "every song sounds the same" album, keep it tight, please. Best track: There were tracks?

Doesn't commit too many fouls outside of some annoying vocal rhythms, but quickly wears thin after 40+ minutes of repetitive melodic lines... when there's still half an hour left to go. Some editing of the filler tracks could've made this a tight, exuberant rock LP but as is it's just way too bloated an album.

Tsja, lastig. Enerzijds best catchy hier en daar, anderzijds teveel en gewoon niet zo boeiend.

1/2 way in an skipping some tracks mid way through. Not good, un enjoyable. Husker DooDoo

An okay album. Apparently an early alternative album before the genre got a bit more famous. don’t necessarily think being early to a genre is special if the music doesn’t bring a lot of entertainment. It wasn’t bad just felt very bland, very long and nothing stood out. The singer would be hard to understand at times. 4.5/10

This felt like a mix of different genres, without committing to any. It’s possible that it felt more interesting during the time it was released, but I found it mostly flat.

So it's like a punk REM? Sounds great on paper but it was not doing it for me. Favorite tracks: Too Much Spice

I had an impression that I'm listening to the same song over and over, couldn't stop checking on it. I've been waiting until it ends since the half of the album, music wasn't infact horrible but I didn't enjoy it

Meh. Just not much interesting going on in the sound or lyrics.

Liked the Spice number...but not my thing
