Reviews (page 4 of 7)
It was fine. Literally. It was fine.
Pretty good, but unfortunately also pretty dated. Favorite track: "808080808"
Definitely an interesting listen. I didn't know what to expect but honestly it was quite nice. It reminds me of a videogame soundtrack. My favorite was "Ancodia" because of the rhythm. It's good background noise but I'm not sure if I'd listen again.
After awhile, this got to be just too repetitive for me. Maybe for it's time it was a standout record, but there's nothing about it today that sets it above any music in it's genre. So for me it's just another middle of the road electronic album
I understand what was going on. But the gap between New Order and The Chemical Brothers was not filled by 808 State. However, I do recognize their importance.
ich ha d musig zwar recht kuul gfunde, ich wür zu dem tanze im usgang und ich finds für elektronik vergliichswiis spannend. mit de zit findi s wird aber trotzdem eintönig und es gaht soo lang das album👀
Decent listen.
Reminded me of music aliens would play at dance parties. Simple, repetitive music that would likely drive me insane hearing it all night, but an album's worth was pretty good. Not sure I would ever buy it or even want to hear it again, but I enjoyed it a bit this morning with my coffee. Sounds a bit like hi energy exercise music - I don't know I'll likely forget all about it before lunch.
6/10 Some breaking beats to move your feets I suppose. 3-04-2025
first few songs i enjoyed but it’s quite long and some weird tracks
techno/dance/acid - well built
Electronic in the late 80's? It wasn't bad...
This was a pretty awesome sounding dance album, had very retro video game vibes! I enjoyed it! But probably won't listen to it again!
Huh, so that's Acid House.
great vibes beautiful vibes.
-this is so fun i rather enjoy “early” electronic dance music… didn’t end up liking it QUITE as much as I thought I would after only having heard Ooops with Björk on their later album.. -some songs were a bit underwhelming, but i still fw it. Pacific 202 is such a nice song dam -Favorites are Magical Dream, Pacific 202, and Sunrise
The same issue that tends to pop up with EDM albums - outside of the right context, they can be boring. I liked this well enough at first, but everything blended together and I was pretty much glad for it to be over. Not bad in itself, though. 2-3
This was interesting, and at first, I thought it was pretty good. But by the end of the album, it was just so repetitive and droning that I was kinda sick of it. Three stars.
I usually don't like electronic music so much, but this was very upbeat and seemed to have electronic soul, if that makes sense.
This album is like a perfect time capsule of what the late eighties and early nineties were like, when the mainstream had decided that electronic and dance music could be popular, but MY GOD we need to sand off every edge that could be weird or offensive or different. The safest, most middle of the road dance music I think I've ever heard - I like it, don't get me wrong, but how could you not like it? There's literally nothing there for your brain to latch onto as an object of dislike, you slide off it like it's a sphere made of Teflon. I knew Pacific 202 before this, as it is one of the most unintentionally funny performances on Top of the Pops (let's get these electronic artists, who have never done anything like this, to mime along with their track on live telly - and look natural, damn it!), but I'm struggling to remember any of the other tracks. I stopped listening about two minutes ago, and they're gone like Keyser Soze's farts in the wind. Three stars, and you can thank me for them.
This didn’t really do anything for me.
Tycker denna var helt okej och lite imponerande att den kom redan 89. Finns ett par mindre lyckade låtar, men exempelvis Pacific 202 är riktigt bra.
Veldig rart og faktisk veldig underhaldande.
Nice early electronic music. I've never heard the whole thing and it's really good all the beats are catchy. This was a great album and I'm sure now that I've heard it I will listen to it when I'm in an upbeat vibe.
First shock was the sounds of the album during few starting tracks. Second shock was that this tracks stay rather similar. Third shock was a notice that I quite like this. I's cool to hear albums that are kinda starting point for so many familiar tracks. Solid three stars
80s Disco Music!!! Magical Dream was enjoyable - Great start. Cobra Bora feels like I'm supposed to be zooming around at the speed of light - it is giving me a headache
Three electronic albums in four days. Surely it comes to an end at some point. Never heard of this group. Sounds like pretty standard late 80s/early 90s EDM. I'm trying not to let the fact that I'm getting sick of electronic music sway my rating. I'm typing this as I listen so we'll see if my thoughts change. The album was off to a slow start but Cobra Bora and Pacific 202 are actually pretty good. Donkey Doctor is a certified banger. Favorite song: Donkey Doctor Least Favorite Song: Magical Dream
Dance music is so weird to rate. I obviously didn't listen to this in the correct environment. It was fine.
Not the worst electronic music I’ve ever listened to, but suffers from being too long and too repetitive as most EDM does.
First couple of tracks just sounded like generic late 80s dance. As the album went on it found its place as one of the pioneers of the house/trance scene. It's difficult to review albums out of context as their originality and context is often lost in time. Superceded by acts that built on the pioneers of their time. Pacific 202 and Donkey Doctor were faves off this album.
3.2 3x
Pacific State was just perfect for the times. I could dance to this until the early hours - and have, in my long lost clubbing days.
Like it 3/5
Great dance music but I'd have to be in a specific mood for this
I've realised in the course of this odyssey that I'm a bit of an arsehole as a reviewer. Despite any positive feeling towards a record, I almost always feel compelled to include a 'but...'. Anyway, I need to try not to do that so much. I like a bit of 808 State. Their singles are banging. This record is a cool short stab of acidey goodness. Doesn't quite hold up as a complete listen in the way that something from LFO might, for example. Very evocative of a particukar time and a certain vibe though.
some of this sounds incredibly dated but some of it is really great. Obvious influences on stuff that came later, but a lot of it makes me feel like I'm driving a Pontiac Fiero while on coke, posters of buxom women in really high hipped bikinis on the wall of my room. I know it's the EDM way but some of the songs overstay their welcome, and I should admit I'm not a fan of acid house. I dunno, I think this might be a bit like the Velvet Underground where there's some good stuff but most of the stuff that came later is better. I zoned out on the second half of this album - seems a bit more relaxed. Anyway, I think I gotta give it a 3 because, while I'm sure this hits for some and was a banger back in '89, I could just play sonic the hedgehog.
Une fois de plus, j'ai pas de souvenir clair d'une seule track de l'album, c'est donc un certified MID album
24/11/24 It didn't set my world alight.
Hasn't aged too well, but I'll throw it 3 stars for the nostalgia value.
Acid house. Ni fu ni fa.
Catchy beats, though nothing really stands out - but then, when you realize when it came out, this was way before its time.
I love the energy. Found myself mindlessly tapping my fingers or feet to the beats. It really is a berade of sounds though. I think this album didn't age well as there are many more edm projects out there now which have more interesting sounds and compositions. I would say this album best fits in a high tempo exercise class.
I did enjoy this, it is great background 80 electronic music. Lots of Synths and some fantastic baselines. Favourite song: Pacific 202 Least favourite: nothing to hate, there are some great sounds and tracks on this album Album artwork: Cool cover
It was alright. Very danceable. I'd probably like it a lot more if I was drunk, and also dancing.

3.4 stars rounded down. Graham Massey did better work as a producer for Björk and other 90s acts. 808 State is a good outfit but the music reminds me of post-expressionist painters like Jackson Pollack and James Rosenquist. The canvass is large, seems fun, and there is a lot going on, but is it just blips, drips and collections of disparate objects? Good colour and worth a look, though I tend to forget about 808 State (and those painters), and later I am pleased with a brief revisit.
Not bad but it did not age as good as other non-electronic records.
House not my thing. Dated sound
A good album to get on a Sunday morning when I have my workout planned. I think I was familiar with Pacific 202 but I'm not so sure, either way it was a pretty decent track. I would explore more of 808 State although electronica isn't exactly my genre of choice.
I'm not into electronic music but this was not horrible. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
A lot going on here, but compact enough to keep me interested. Sure.
Interesting listen - for a genre that makes use of a repetitive 4/4 time signature, I found that there was enough varieties between songs that I did not feel like it was a 30 minute-long song. Not too bad overall!
definitely some cool stuff sprinkled in but overall nothing crazy
I kinda liked it
Nice old school beats but nothing special nowadays.
I'm not a huge fan of electronic music and I don't see myself being one in the near future, just as a disclaimer. However, this album was actually alright. There were many songs that I genuinely enjoyed and a few made it onto the playlist. Would I listen to this album again? Probably not. Would I recommend you give it a listen? Definitely.
Enjoyed this more than I do most music of this type - there's much more going on than in most electronic albums, and don't think you need to be on pills to enjoy this one. It's not lifechanging, but it's better than a lot of the instrumental heavy stuff we've had. 3/5.
Nice
Pretty solid electronic music, though I don't know when I would come back. Cool sounds, very rhythmic. I enjoyed Pacific 202 and 808080808 the most. Also special shoutout to the Sonic trampoline sound in Donkey Doctor.
The album itself had a definite feel to it that screamed of a particular era in time. It also created a quite nice Spotify session that followed.
Absolutely not a genre of music I listen. I admit that I don’t really know anything about dance/electronic/ house music but I do know I enjoyed this for what it was.
Decent techno/dance album. It doesn't blow me away, but I have no complaints
This is one of those cases where a piece of work just isn't for me. I love electronica, don't get me wrong. But when it is layered with house and techno it personally enters hit and miss territory; and this is very much a hit and miss album. I feel like this music belongs on a stage with lasers, CGI screens, and an audience who wants to simply vibe with it. To sit down and give it a serious listen is a bit of an odd experience. In general, it is good. The drum programming is complex and impressive, the keyboard work is top notch, and the sounds they're experimenting with are implemented seamlessly. Standout tracks for me: 'Cobra Bora', '808080808', and 'Sunrise'; songs that I could totally have on in the background and not complain. I give it a 3 because I'm a sucker for good production and I appreciate it for what it is. I just probably wouldn't seek it out in the future.
Pretty fuckin sick??? It was cool. I imagine putting this on in 1989 and being like, well this is cooooooooool. I like to imagine what I'm wearing, this imaginary 1989 Jacob. It obviously sounds dated in the ways you'd expect, but there's enough new and engaging there that you don't get bored, even as someone who's heard a less fun / engaging version of this kind of thing on every 90's commercial ever. I kind of liked it a lot and could see myself pulling it out! 3/5 for a good time.
Not something I would listen to in my free time but it was a fun listening experience. Best - Magical Dream, Ancodia, and Pacific 202 Worst - no bad songs 2.75-3.00/5
Really no different than any of the other UK Electronic music on this list. Not being sure what makes this a standout for such a list, but it was an okay listen. 3/5.
Seems like a lot of these tracks has been used in various songs in the 90s but idk. It’s kinda fun but really it seemed like halfway through it I was in a time loop. Not bad but I like something a little more in my EDM.
Feels futuristic.
I remember some of these tracks from the 90s! Still like them, but wouldn't stick it on these days.
Trendy hotel music
British electronic group from the 80s? Classic stuff for this list. Never heard of this, it was fine, not for me. Too much of it on this list. At least it predates the CD era when these albums got way too long.
No idea why this is on the list, but like most acid house (yes I am a connoisseur, how did you know?), it takes a while for the mood and groove to set in. When it does, time and space flies by.
If I was into clubbing, drugs and dance house music, this would be a fine soundtrack to dance along to pressed up against sweaty bodies in an abandoned warehouse in the sketchy part of town. Since this isn't my scene, it's listenable, electronic background music that I can turn my brain off and just enjoy the interesting techno beats and bop my head and tap my toes to. It's there, I enjoyed it enough not to turn it off and I'm glad I have other options to listen to.
Innovative sounding album, but not as memorable as others.
Not bad as background electronica. Apparently they were pioneers. 2.5, which I suppose I have to round up to 3 because I did the same for OutKast
Favorito: 808080808.
Lotta fun over here
I liked how the opening of the first track starts with the riff, and then extrapolates a bit from there. Obviously the keyboardist had fun soloing over this stuff. The biggest thing is that no one song stands out for me. Most of it can definitely be thought of more as background music than anything else. It kinda makes it hard to pick out any one thing that's like, wow! They all had the same vibe to it, which made it 40 minutes of one track, spilt into 8 smaller pieces. I wonder how it would sound on shuffle. The last track seemed like an epilogue, which I thought was kinda weird. You could tell the band had fun putting this together. It was well-constructed for me, though. Just not a big thing I was into.
How does one get into acid house? Or what activity do I need to be doing to truly get into it? The opener Magical Dream had an interesting keyboard beat and some decent synth layers overtop - it reminded me a bit of regular dance (think Snap) that was trying to take off in the late 80's, early 90's. But I grew tired of it quickly. Same thing for most songs on this album; waiting for it to be over to see if the next one might captivate me for the whole time. That's borderline 2 material, but that felt a bit harsh. Plus I made it through the album without skipping, though the music just ran in the background and I didn't realize when the album was over and new artists started to randomly play. So, I'm ambivalent.
"A pioneer of the acid house sound." I'm sure this is great to hear in a club, and I'll give them credit for not having any sounds I dislike (which I can't say for a lot of these types of albums), but it's nothing more than a background bop to me. Cobra Bora caught my attention, so I'll call that a favorite track. Moving on.

Weirdly relaxing, very aligned with the decade change. Enjoyable.
Reminds me of drug fueled nights in smoky establishments. I can only imagine the scenes of an underground rave in the early 90s with this blasting. Fun stuff in here but not an album I care to listen again from start to finish.
Unexpectedly cool
808 State? lol Hawaii? yep. Funny I remember that from when I used to activate VoiceStream phones. only got through like 3 or 4 songs
Interesting hearing old electronic music but man this hasn’t aged well
This list has not been kind to electronic music. And neither have I really. The picks they chose just aren’t that good. I can’t think of one I’ve reviewed very positively, other than the one Kraftwerk album I’ve heard. As much as I claim to love electronic music, I don’t listen to it that often. And truthfully the really good albums are few and far between. What I’ve realized is that it is better as an element of some other genre, like indietronica or even metal music, and less as its own thing. Few people have mastered the ability to make interesting full length electronic albums. It’s also a genre that suffers from a lot of overly long songs and repetition. I was actually vaguely familiar with 808 State until today. Because I’ve heard Pacific State before. Or more like I’ve heard the songs it’s been sampled in. I’m convinced that electronic sub-genre names mean even less than metal sub-genres. Because how much of a difference is there really between acid house and ambient house? The average listener is not going to know, or really care about that distinction. This album isn’t actually horrible though. Not the best piece of electronic music I’ve ever heard by any means. And nothing super mind blowing. But I can appreciate some of what they are doing here. I like when the group leans more into the ambient side of things and incorporates these super spacey and lush synths. I’m always a sucker for that kind of stuff. The drum programming is also nice. Pacific 202 is great, and sounds like it would fit right in at some sort of neo-futuristic Cyberpunk-esque club. The way the album flows feels progressive and interesting enough to keep me engaged through out. This also allowed them to avoid any real repetition. The songs I didn’t like just didn’t do enough to stick out to me. That’s all this album is, really. Okay. Nothing more than that. Rating: 5/10
Nice in the background
Could have it on repeat in the background for quite a while
I’ve been to a rave party that had the same kinda vibes. This album was more experimental for my taste but the second half of it was wild, in a good way.
Some fun late 80's electronic music that sometimes sounds mystical, sometimes dreamy, sometimes silly, and blends in some odd meters, but often borders on being a bit too repetitive. The overall drum sound is amazing and something that I really specifically like, and the panning of the drums is really well done. It feels ahead of it's time production wise. It's a strong 3 for me but not quite enough for a 4.
Not bad, but can’t see the point why it should be on a ‘must listen’ list.
It reminds me of background music you'd hear in some games from the early 2000s. I don't dislike it, but I won't be listening to it again I think.
This was just ok. Not typically my style of music
Fairly interesting and enjoyable electronic music.
The experience of listening to this album was not unlike listening to an hour of the background music in Wii sports.
Sounds a bit dated now but I did own at the time
Totally a hookers and blow album
The Original Acid House / Techno album that shaped the underground 90's scene and thousands of artists in the modern era. Even when it's not my style, I've found great appreciation in this project for showing the origins amongst the interconnected web of music
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
Eh
jolly enough, not my thing but I can see how, if you like this stuff, it's a good example of the genre
Good beats, some cool experimental sounds.
It's got a cool, seasick and disorienting groove to it, with sounds that develop in weird directions. I thought the first two tracks were weak but after that I got into it
Cheesy electronica. I didn't hate it. Good background music.
fine overall. Songs blended together, not my style of music.
Electronic dance/rave music without many lyrics - not really my vibe but very solid for what it is. I had to get past Donkey Doctor though, the electronic "bray" sound every once in a while (I'm guessing?) was really annoying.
электронщина без пения (и не фбс) что-то не увлекла меня
Un album difficile d’accès, qui martèle son unicité par ses rythmes infatigables
Had low expectations since it was an electronic album, but it was a pleasant listen. Some danceable moments as well.
I think rn it would take a groundbreaking and revolutionary instrumental-esque album for me to rate it higher than a 3. This was fine. I fw it but like it didn’t get me excited. Ik there were some lyrics but not enough.
Another just kinda boring electronica album that doesn’t really stand out to me at all and is so mediocre that it makes me mad
First listen was a little irritating, but on the second listen it grew on me a little. Pacific State is the best track. Donkey Doctor is decent too.
A lot of it felt very backgroundy, and reminded me of Sega Genesis games. I could picture Sonic running along to Pacific 202 easily. The dorky vocal lines almost tipped the scale into the negative territory for me. But, I'm feeling generous.
Sounds like the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. Just imagine Axel Foley getting putting a banana in a tailpipe as you listen.
did not enjoy enough
Mej
Good
Kool stöff.
Would not be out of place in a Metroid game.
This is fine
I wasn't sure about this one until I started looking at it as the soundtrack to a retro style video game. Then I really started to get into it.
When this was made the dance revolution that would define the nineties (far bigger than grunge or Britpop, a proper cultural revolution) was a live events and singles affair. DJ Mix albums were recorded onto dodgy cassettes and sold at Camden Market. Two years before the first Prodigy album, four years before 'dance bands' like the Chemicals, Leftfield and Underworld would start to crank out proper dance albums this feels like a long EP. Absolutely of its time, and signposting the way ahead to greater glories, there's nothing here to equal the timelessness of Pacific State but its aged pretty well.
OK background music. Good early example of electronic music as I'd call it today.
It has a few really great bits, and you can see how the innovated a lot that would come after, but it feels a bit dated now. They hand built structures that a kid can make on an iPad now. Important, but not essential listening.
Electronica pero con sonido de los 80.
3.5/5
I liked this more than I expected. I find a lot of electronic music annoyingly repetitive, but this was good! I wouldn't consider it a must have, but if I come across a copy I will definitely take a closer look.
Felt like I was in a 90s movie driving down the highway or at the club. Fun album. Very repetitive but worth the listen for at least a few songs
Acid house. Ni fu ni fa.
I don't do enough MDMA for this album.
Not my favourite of the genre but that one single is great.
Ideal para una noche de tunga tunga
so i think my taste in electronic music is very particular. a lot of the stuff i have been presented so far i have not really liked and hasn't really given me a sound that i really like. this album did. i had a lot of fun listening to it, i thought the songs felt dynamic and interesting. i still think it gets relegated to background music, but at least it's kinda fun background music.
Really digging “Cobra Bora” it’s got some attitude. Likable uptempo electronic dance music. I much prefer instrumentals in this genre, and this albumis no escption. I think the weakest songs on this have vocals and they feel a bit labored: less funky or sincere. Like the artist is try to wedge a vocal track into his groove because he's "supposed to?" Likable nonetheless. The back end of this album is a little heavier, which I also like in this kind of music. Mostly a party, though!
I was expecting Hawaiian slack-key or island sounds, not EDM! Did a little research on the band and they are kind of pioneers in club music. Cool and interesting; I'm sure this is used often by DJs and gets/keeps people on the floor.
I can see the appeal of this record, but it’s just not the kind of music I like to listen to.
Likte da egentlig litt, kan vurdera å beholda da i albumlisto for et par gjennomlyttinga til
Funky, Dancing, Charming!
Far more enjoyable listening to this understanding what the 808 actually is. Back when it was released I couldn’t work out all the hype. It seemed just like any other dance music.
The album as a whole is not really my bag, but Pacific 202 (or is it called "Pacific State" or just "Pacific"?) is a real vibe. If I understand it correctly this track is the oft-imitated OG; I remember having this on the DDJ having downloaded loads of House/Electronic tracks and I definitely thought it was a modern track. On the whole though the album didn't do much for me. I want more acidity in my house. Fave Tracks: Magical Dream, Pacific 202 3.1/5
This was fine and was decent as background music.
Finally, a 90s British electronic album that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Some interesting samples here.
3.0 futurista
I don't think this album has aged well. I generally like electronic music (including ambient, techno etc), but this one leaves me a bit cold. I have a couple of more recent collaborative Graham Massey albums that I very much prefer. Having played this half a dozen times, it has grown on me. But not that much. No particular stand out tracks for me.
It's 'okay' I guess.....very stylised techno and quite dated now. It's nice to listen to but can be a bit samey in places.
Good clean electronic music. Does not stand up well in the midst of other EBM/Post-Industrial scene artists and music. Nothing of note track wise. Wonderful for background/ambient music. Non-intrusive.
Nice change. This isn't my genre, but I'm trying to be open to it. And honestly, I can appreciate the experimentation that went into this music. Very fresh sound. They are using samples from everywhere to make the music - the nature sounds in Pacific 202 particularly hit.
Classic 90's techno music. A little boring now-a-days but still not bad.
I checked the work HR policy on dropping acid during work hours and apparently, it's a no. This forced me to listen "unaided", 3 stars. anyone got any Acid?
3/5. I swear this most have been the inspiration for many video games to come, this feels like it comes directly from a video game score, specifically retro or indie. It's repetitive, it is electronic, but the little additions thrown in keep it from being stale like a violin, or heavy bass note that pops up. It's not a repeatable listen for me but it was pretty good.
It's solid acid house and does what needs to be done. You can tell in musical context why it's important, but it's just not my bag.
I felt like I needed to watch the Matrix after this. 3.5/5
3.5
Tegelijkertijd heel gedateerd en heel modern
Was underwhelmed until I saw that this album came out in 1989. So it was pretty ahead of its time, and "Pacific State" is a great great track that I heard a lot in a lot of DJ mixes in the 90's. Across the whole of the album I would say it felt a little uneven and nothing really matches up to "Pacific", but still some impressive stuff showing what was to come in house/electronica.
Yeah it’s fine I guess
It is Ok as background music for work.
An artist that got me listening to techno as a kid
cool cover, some alright tracks cobra bora pacific 202 sunrise
A three I guess. This one is hard to rate.
Techno album, enjoyed listening to it
Pretty early/raw electronica. Could really hear a lot of early AFX in this but whereas he perfected the genre, this was just... dated and pretty disappointing. 2.5*
Driving beats, funky riffs, gloriously corny tones, and a catchy sense of melody - it's like a darker harder disco sound played through a Nintendo for a rave in an abandoned train yard.
Interesting mix, the style is like 2000s club but with 80s sounds. Went hard for about 3 songs
It's OK albeit a bit dated. It's fine for background music.
“Welcome to techno city-“ favorite line of the album! Cool early electronic music with nothing too exciting or substantial to be memorable. Not many opinions on this album; I can see it as an important stepping stone for the genre. Three stars.
3.3
Always down for some more house music. This one is fun, although it definitely feels a bit dated and 80s.
Aldrei heyrt um þessa hljómsveit eða þessa plötu.
Sooo... It wouldn't be anything extraordinary, if this album would be created in the 90's or later. But it was done in 1989, so I think we have to respect an attempt of the artists to kind of jump in the future. Although it's not the level of jump Jean-Michel Jarre or Kraftwerk has accomplished, it's a small step forward in the history of the electronic music.
Late 80's synthy-dance music. Not memorable, not terrible. One hit.
First EDM album from this list, a genre I'm not at all familiar with. Not bad at all. I'll keep this in mind if I need background music without getting caught up in lyrics.
6.5/10 fave: pacific 202
It’s ok for what it is. Doesn’t really hold up though.
Trippy, but I’m not tripping.
I'd listen to this again. Sounds like a less exciting Streets of Rage. Maybe someday it'll go up to a 4. In my heart anyway - we can't edit these.
It’s fine. Is the author of the 1,001 book a white British guy in their 50s/60s? Because that’s the vibe I’m getting so far from these album choices (which is not a criticism). I love electronic music in general, and this album probably sounded futuristic when it was released, but now it sounds almost quaint. I feel like I’ve heard the sax part in Pacific 202 before. Maybe as a reference or joke in an Edgar Wright thing?
Not bad but not really for me. It feels like it’s probably perfect for listening to at a club or a rave, but just casually without any stimulants it’s just fine. I feel like New Order and bands like that do this kind of thing more interestingly
My head bobbed.
Decent album from the 80s
I thought this album would be better than it was. I love the track they released as a single but was disappointed by the rest, some of which just sounded frenetic. Overall a low 3*
IDK, sampling and drum machines had been around for some time by ‘89. Hell, even “Pump Up the Volume was ‘88. A bit more refined I suppose. ”Pacific 202” is groovy.
A synth-y sort of electronic music. A bit eerie at moments. Mostly pretty basic. Fine.
Found this bit too slick for my taste, better music in this genre available. But nice to hear, 3 stars.
Interesting to listen to this in close proximity to The Shamen, which I thought was more entertaining in the end. But this is a pretty solid 3 I guess.
Acid house is a genre that sought some variation on the already-established house genre of electronic dance music by adding modulation and distortion to the bassline in order to produce a sound that became core to the genre. While picking up steam throughout the mid 80's, it hit a fever pitch in 1988 and 1989. Hence, we have 808 State's 90, dropping just before the decline of the house genre. Tracks flow from one to the next so it creates a seemless 40-minute dance party. It has a lot more atmosphere than I was anticipating. Most of my experience with acid house is form Daft Punk's Da Funk, so this caught me off guard. I thought a lot of it was pretty good, but 808080808 was the best showing of Acid House's excellence. Likely the best of the crop from this time, but has long fell to the wayside.
Good techno beats. Not something I would ever listen to but its still pretty cool.
I know it paved the way for what was to come, but doesn’t really hold up. Standouts are Pacific 202 and 808080808
202 Pacific and Sunrise are bangers. Otherwise half decent album.
It sounds like it was the creator of the original cell phone ringtones. It's like hearing the original cuts and what didn't make it on the floor.
Obviously, this was a major early entry into a genre and one likes this more than much of the progeny it spawned (looking at you Depeche Mode). There's some color here and, again, this would work well for some gym days. But, let's be honest, it's very much on the soulless side (especially the computerized vocal boxing), maybe made the dance music world safe for soullessness. "Pacific" is easily the best cut.
A bit grumpy listening to this on a hot train. Just as the 808s intended. Think it was pretty cool though. Three and a half. Fave track: Pacific 202
Fun and infectious, but I was not really in the mood to listen to this. I can acknowledge that this is something new to me, and that is a big part of doing this whole project, but this feels like another album that I probably could have died without listening to just fine. Two and a half. Fave track: Pacific 202
Ehhh. it's fine EDM. Again most of the stuff on this list is pretty bland and there is far better music in the local dance club.
a fun 90s electronica album
Is this record great for studying, working, or having on in the background when you need a good bpm pulse but don't want to be dragged down by detailed audio? Sure, it is. Is there more going on in the record? Probably! But after a couple of listens, I can't help but think that it only matters to the headphone crowd now. What now sounds tame was once fire.
This is kind of a weird one for me, since this album sounds super generic and dated, but I also know that this would have been pretty innovative when it came out, especially for the mainstream. It does seem a little weird to me that this list features British acid house, rather than American acid house, since the genre was developed in America. However, I don't know the genre well enough to know how many albums of this quality were produced by the Chicago acid house school. Regardless, this is one of those albums where I'm able to recognize its importance, despite the fact that I don't find it all that interesting to listen to 3/5
Not terrible. Decent background music. Not good for much else.
This is fun
Love this music for working 15 hour days. Not great for most of the other things I do during a day though.
Not bad but I kept forgetting I had it on. Not really sure if that's a good sign or bad. It did have a strange familiarity even though I'm pretty sure I've never heard anything on this album before.
Not really my thing. Didn't hate listening to it but wasn't really into it either. A solid Meh.
Love the Afrobeat influence and more experimental sections but eventually the prog-house drone is tiring and dated.
This sounds like that one Spongebob episode where Squidward goes to the future and everything is shiny and chrome. It's cheesy and parts of it remind me of intros for old nature documentaries about fish with really bad CGI, but I actually liked it quite a bit.
Música electrónica sin muchos matices. Se escucha bien, pero no destaca para nada. Pasa desapercibido
Interesting early electronic stuff, but not my bag.
It sounds maybe 5 years newer than it is. Lots of attention to detail regarding the drums. The bass and the rest of the music are sometimes in completely different keys. It definitely belongs on the list, but I don't like it very much. Favorite song: anacodia.
Solid dance album that really was ahead of its time, as it felt like something I'd hear in the later 90s, not later 80s.
Really approximates what I assume being in a club in a middle-upperclass area of great London in 1989 was like. You can practically smelly the LYNX
Turn of the decade listenable rave techno a bit like Orbital. So much better than The Shamen of the same period (still no idea why Boss Drum is included in this list).
Heard before. Sounds a bit like proto-vaporwave. Liked it more this time around. + Pacific 202 + Donkey Doctor + Sunrise
Great ambient music for work, but not much going on to keep my interest in these tracts. Still, the music is to my taste.
It ok
As far as this kind of music goes, it was pretty enjoyable.
Snuser på 4 stjerner men når ikke helt opp
Meet George Jetson, in space traffic. Daughter Judy, dancing in a warehouse. Jane his wife, at a exercise class. All listenig to this album. Kind of liked it.
Not bad
Bit odd but interesting
Of its era, pretty solid, would never dance to this but might help with concentrated, focused work. I’m not sure that is a good thing.
Genre: EDM Review: Decent music for running, workouts, work etc. Not a fan of the genre at all so don't go by my words necessarily, but it was all quite same-ey, uninventive and one-dimensional. At least it wasn't at all off-putting so I could easily listen to the whole thing. Rating: 5/10
Feels dated, it's fine but nothing mindblowing
I didn't know this was a house album, so it was kind of a weird way to start the work day. Sitting in my office but my mind is at a rave. This isn't really my kind of music to begin with, to be honest. It's very repetitive, which I guess is the point. It's very danceable, and therein lies the problem -- I don't dance. But overall, not terrible background noise either.
Not bad and ahead of it's time but it's a bit dated today. It's impressive that it was made in 1989 with this amount of variety in the sounds and beats.
Not bad 2.7
On y prend absolument aucun plaisir mais saluons l'originalité. Le titre 0111001110 sort tout de même un peu du lot.
6/10
Video game music? Lol
Early UK acid house techno. It's very dense and is overwhelming intense in texture. It's intended for the dance floor, not my kitchen radio so I feel a bit lost. I love electronica but I like stuff that let's me breathe. 3
Pretty solid electric music. I may never listen to it again but I enjoyed it. Gives the feel of a 90s club. I imagine that this was a quite influential album for the electric scene Favorite songs: Magical Dream, Pacific 202
Yet another edm album that I appreciated as edm but didn’t see how it stood out in any way enough to be on this list. It was fine I guess
Molto trippy. Non male alcune canzoni.
This album is pretty good. The only song I really enjoyed was Pacific 202, but the other songs were decent. Also helps that I heard Pacific 202 before. This is the first early Electronica album that I enjoyed. Favorite song: Pacific 202 Worst song: 808080808
This was a pretty good acid house album. Not really my style as far as electronic music goes, but I enjoyed it more towards the end. I find this genre a bit too busy for my taste and am more drawn towards the minimalistic genres of electronica.
Late 80s techno pretty non descripte it ended and start playing other 80s techno and I didn't notice for several songs.
That was more chilled out than I was expecting.
I don't like this type of music so i don't know if the album is actually good or not. It's still better than Lorde so fuck it. 3 stars.
Fun old school dance music.
Prima electro, maar weinig aparts
This is interesting, very densely packed with synths, drum machines and vocals. Dance music from this era pretty much always sounds extremely dated, due to the fast nature of change in the genre and this is no exception. Second track Ancodia is prophetic of the way the genre would shift once mainstream in the 90s. Laid back rhythms with sexy pads and squelchy bass. Notable is the complete lack of detuned, circuit bending, glitchy stuff that would appear in the genre 10 years later.
Electric house music from 1989. Reminiscent of 1990s video game music to the extent that I wonder if 'Donkey Doctor' is a deliberate nod to Donkey Kong. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Donkey Doctor Date listened: 30/08/22
‘Pacific 202’ and ‘Sunrise’ are my two standout picks for best tracks on this album, as they are both timeless and still sound current today. They are weapons that can still get a dancefloor going. The rest of the album hasn’t aged as well unfortunately, which is a shame as I was hoping for more.
Easy listening electronica. Didn’t grab me
Sure... I don't really go in for acid house, and I don't have a lot to say about this. There were moments I enjoyed, I would not listen to this unprompted.
Ok.
Interesting embryonic techno. A bit too banging in parts for me, but it had some good moments.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Had a good combo of interesting sounds mixed with good rhythm. Still prefer marshmello
Six minutes of the same beat looping doesn't seem so long if you're on the dance floor. Because as some poets or whatever said, time slows down when one is dancing. But what about when someone is listening to it while crunching numbers in his laptop? Well, it made me realize how long 3 minutes can be. Time is such a thick dimension. Still, the beats are nice. No wonder it set the country on fire.
Dece, no standout moments but pleasant background music
The second summer of love in Manchester. Known for raves and its advancements in neo-psychedelia with the whole Madchester movement. It's an excellent example of acid house. On the stranger end, it's filled with a variety of samples that reminisce of 80s hip hop or later artists like DJ Shadow. Fortunately, this follows IDM's principles and offers a compromise between the lengthiness for dancing like crazy and the lack of repetition suited for casual listening. There's a strong momentum, and the tracks are creative and memorable, with a fair amount of replayability. However, most of the tracks are standalone weak, with a few standouts including the acid house standard "Pacific." Favorites: Magical Dream, Cobra Bora, Pacific, 808080808
Decent
3/5
Nice polyrythms, and a good listening experience overall. Aged well! Highlight: Pacific 202.
Good fun - a bit dated sound wise but otherwise a solid electronic album
I did not find anything super exciting about this album. It was fine.
Rating: 5/10 Bests songs:
Fun but got to the end and realized I hadn't really listened to it. A little too background-y.
Electrónica.
Sounds ahead of its time
Fun electronic album, good for running or exercising
Hm, acid house...great example of the genre, but it's a dated album.
Beetje achterhaald, maar best leuk zo tussendoor.
Lacks the energy of early 808 State.
80808080 I like 👍
Classic funk, an old favourite
Interesante disco. Me parece que ha influido en los inicios de gente como Massive Attack, Moby o The Chemical Brothers.
A fun, energetic listen, and a Manchester/acid house classic. 808 deserves credit for bringing strong melodies into this genre while retaining the groove. It's a real bridge between electronic music of the 80s and all the electronic genres that would blow up in the next decade. I recall this sounding incredibly fresh and ahead of its time in '90, like we hadn't really heard anything like it. "Pacific 202" and "Sunrise" are the "prettiest" songs on the album, but "Donkey Doctor" "Cobra Bora" are just wonderfully layered and built for the dance floor. The only track I absolutely did not like was "Magical Dream," not because of the music but because of the terrible vocals. Fave Songs: Donkey Doctor, Cobra Bora, Pacific 202, Sunrise
Some pretty solid complex drums. It's a cool album.
It's ok, but just not my favorite type of music. Some of it works pretty well as background/productivity type music. 2.5 stars, rounding to 3.
Thought this was cool
I had never heard of this band or their music before. I heard some elements that reminded me of the Pet Shop Boys. I heard some scratching that reminded me of early Run DMC records. I think I heard a swamp rave / dance party too. I labelled "808080808" as 'good' during my review. This album might just sneak in above "I did not hate it".
pacific state is a classic but bit dissapointed with some of it - aged i guess. 3
I liked this, it must’ve been cutting edge at the time
Not bad, bit of fun.
Background music
I listened to today’s 1001 offering while sweeping up the backyard. I was thinking it wasn’t the best music choice when working in the yard and my neighbours quickly indicated they concur. I must say my sweeping pace was much faster than usual. I doubt that yard cleaners was the target audience for this LP but it works. I like what I'm hearing. Cobra Bora and Pac 202 and 80808080 are hot songs. I didn't realize this type of music was going on in 1989. A strange thought: someone around 40 years old might label this "Old fart's music" or "Shit my parents would listen to". Doesn't sound right does it? Perhaps it's a little dated now but I can only imagine how fresh and leading edge this would have been on release.
Highly influential album due to their innovative use of the 808 drum machine but it didn’t age well and most of it is a noisy unholy mess. The best track is Pacific 202.
Quirky elate 80’s electronica. Bonus: “In Yer Face” was a good listen.
Sounds like something my dad might like. I'd give it a 2.5, but uh, can't do that. Entertained me more than devious garbage so it stands out
Very techno. If geometry dash came out in the late 1980's. It was pretty cool I guess.
You can tell it must have been very influential given it came out in 1989, but it's a pretty boring listen nowadays
I'm kind of liking this ... at first. Then I realize that I should hate this. But, I don't. OK, maybe not that bad, is that birds in Pacific 202? Would listen to again as background music while doing something. Maybe the first electronic music I kindof like?
Electronic music but too old. Maybe it was something great new for their time, but now it sounds too noisy. Although some effects sound very complicated even for our time.
Good electro album. Not great but good 3.5 stars but gotta go 3
good background music
Loved parts, hated parts.
some cool stuff on here but a lot was kinda boring.
It's ok, need to remember how influential it was as its pretty dated now
Pretty good, but not really my type
Demasiado esotérico para mi gusto
This was a very cool album. The songs felt a tad long and repetitive but it made for great background music. The album cover is both bland and baffling in a good way, I'm not sure the significance of the numbers either.
Sounds cool but nothing really special on this.
I had no idea what to expect with this, but the genre label "acid house" is much funnier to me than it should be. This is pretty cool though, some really interesting electro-grooves. Nothing too special to me, but an enjoyable listening experience. "Ancodia" sounds indebted to Herbie Hancock's "Rockit." Favorite tracks: Ancodia, Cobra Bora, Donkey Doctor. Album art: Very minimal, but I do like the outline font choice, and the two little inset photos are nice if you can see them. 3.5/5
I've never heard of this group or record previously. It was a fun listen! This era of electronic music is a gap for me. I've got Kraftwerk, and then nothing prior to the mid 90s with Moby etc.
Alright, very 80s, lots of synth, loon calls for a bit?
So 90s! Nice collection of tracks.
