Don't Come Home A Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind)
Loretta Lynn
Reviews (page 6 of 7)
She has a great voice but not my thing
Will come back and listen
Get his ass Loretta
Girl 🫸
I cannot stand to see a woman bleed from the mouth, it reminds me of that country and western music, which I cannot abide
Nada fan del género, creo que es un gusto adquirido. No me gustó mucho, la verdad me costó acabarlo y eso que dura menos de 30 minutos. En fin, en gustos se rompen géneros
I liked how short it was. I did not enjoy this. To twangy.
Best Song: Donn't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind). There's a quaint absurdity to it that makes it worth a laugh, especially given that its at the beginning of the album. Worst Song: Making Plans. The premise of this song is that her partner is making plans to leave her, so her response is to make plans to be sad about it. It would maybe be funny if played ironically, but it has this pathetic, "little old me" earnestness that is just frustrating. Overall: The best part about this is that it is blissfully short. I feel like this style of music has almost no relevance to the modern day, and I would argue that's for good reason. So plodding and formulaic, with what always feel like the exaggerated caricature of emotion rather than its genuine expression. Music for the funerals of the elderly.
Loretta has a great voice. If I enjoyed country music or woman singing about shitty husbands I would have rated this album higher.
Mostly pretty boring. I just don't like slow country much.
Both boring and disturbing.
Just divorce this motherfucker
#820. I could almost copy/paste my review of that Dwight Yoakum album and just switch the pronouns. Because come on, the both of you- every song on the album can't be about how much your life sucks and how bad your partners are. That gets very tedious very quick. 2/5: nah
Not the best, some really old music
Not terrible but not very exciting either and all rather negative lyrically.
Definitely not my thing
One hit. Couple good songs. Some filler.
No va
I like old country, but not this old country. The trope of the battered woman who returns to her husband despite the bruises is strong here. Despite the fact that she sounds like Dolly, she lacks any inkling of empowerment, which makes this album a bust for me.
Her voice and music are great. The lyrics though...
Great album so far
She has a nice voice, but I. Just. Don't. Like. Country.
I wanted to like it more than I anticipated- no songs stuck out to me! Missed the mark.
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: The Devil Gets His Due, I Got Caught You can't change my mind about country music being good. But, I will say, of all of the country music I've listened to so far, this sucks the least (ignoring Johnny Cash), weirdly. Unlike a metric shit ton of music coming out in the 60s about love, sex and women, you gotta give Loretta Lynn some credit for singing about infidelity/cheating, jealousy, relationship dependency, inappropriate relationships and a variety of shit that can go sideways in a relationship. She has a nice voice, and the subject matter is refreshing, so can overlook the twangy country music. If this was spun as like, a 1950s female Sinatra, I could really get behind it.
This was a bit too country for me.
Should probably leave this guy loretta
Good voice - songs very dull.
Gee I’m not having a good run lately, lots of one dimensional albums from icons of eras gone by and genres I don’t enjoy - Sinatra, Aretha and now Loretta. Again, sure, she has a great voice, but this style of country is just not my cup of tea.
simple fun music, depressing lyrics make it less fun
Her voice is great. She influenced a whole bunch of artists to come. But, this album... it just felt like slow ballad after slow ballad packed with really, really obvious and uninspiring break-up lyrics. If it changed up or switched rhythm or was just a little bit more energetic, maybe I would've enjoyed it a bit more. Despite being only 28 minutes, it felt like almost double that. This is the type of album that I'd probably pass by at a yard sale or a thrift store and not think anything of it, probably thinking it's another unc classic, which it is. It just didn't do anything for me in particular. Her vocals are still great though. Loved the somewhat more upbeat instrumentals of "Saint to a Sinner", "The Devil Gets His Due", and "I Got Caught", which really helped break up the monotony of the slow ballad after slow ballad, which took up most of the first half. Favs: Saint to a Sinner, The Devil Gets His Due Dislikes: Don't Come Home A Drinkin', I Really Don't Wanna Know, There Goes My Everything ...
2.5 I fully appreciate her talent and her contribution - just not my jam. Though, as with a lot of country, do love the humor in the lyrics.
I’ll give it a two because it’s Loretta Lynn but it’s not my jam at all.
This makes me think I am a trad wife with a cheating husband who I never leave because at least he doesn't hit me
Phew...
Not being a fan of country music as a whole, this would always have been a hard listen for me. Mix in the topics of the lyrics and the overall approach to the themes, and it feels very submissive to me. That being said, it's a hard no, one of the few albums I could not listen to through the end. One small ratings bump upwards because of the apparent historical impact it had, but not AT ALL something I would consider to be listeneable again.
Blech.
boring, odd inclusion
I get that it’s classic but it’s hard to like. The lyrics are about an incredibly toxic relationship.
I like the first song. Everything else was passable, but very unmemorable. I've heard it all done better before, all this did was recreate a 60s country pastiche. This album didn't have much to offer, so consequently I don't have much constructive criticism.
Decent listen but nothing memorable
Loretta, girl, go get a better relationship. Drinking, evy, he's cheating on you, you're cheating on him, it's clearly not very healthy. A bluesy down on your luck country somg here and there can be very powerful, but when the whole album is contextualized that way, it feels more manipulative towards the listener than anything. Or maybe everyone feels this way but it just so happens my relationships are healtier. The music is pretty good, I definitely like this classic country sound more and more as I hear it. It's simplicity just feels good. This album does all feel like the same song, however, so not sure how much I loved the full album. Tomorrow Never Comes is probably my favorite here.
A low 2 for me, it’s not really my thing and will not be revisiting the album
Depressing themes concurrent with the times, easy background listening if you don't listen to the lyrics. Not my taste though, wanted to listen to something else by Track 4.
I understand the historical significance of Loretta Lynn to country music. But pre-rock-infused, weepy, hate your man, hate your life, sorry for yourself doesn’t make for an album I want to hear. 2⭐️
I Really Don’t Want To Know // 1.5/5
It’s fine but maybe not my cup of tea
Surprisingly good for country music. She actually has something to say and there is just enough musical variety to make it through
Gostei muito da segunda música. A voz dela é boa e me remete a WandaVision. São músicas boas para se dançar com alguém
What in the kantri is this? Ensin valitusta kun mies juo ja pettää ja sitten päädytään itse pettämään. Get your life together lady Sanoja lukuunottamatta kaikki biisit kuulostaa samalta. Tai no...kantrilta
For today's 1001 albums to hear before I die, I got what is said to be an extremely influential Country album, yet I have never once heard the artist's name or the album title. Today I got Loretta Lynn's 1967 classic? Don't Come Home a Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind). This album looks, sounds, and feels like something you'd find at an estate sale listed for $20 with a shit ton of writing or scribbling on the cover and more cracks than a sidewalk in the sleeve. This is surely a "grandma essential" and I bet if you were to ask your grandparents they would probably tell you about hearing this project for the first time. Country has never really been my strong suit, but these long ballads really are putting me to sleep more than anything. If this had more changes in speed and even rhythm I am sure I could have gotten down with it more, but this album is one slow dance after another and it gets quite tiresome by the end of the 28 minutes. I really tried here y'all but I guess I'll have to giddy up to the next album without much more thought.
Solid life advice contained within the ups and downs of this country classic.
Какая скукотень...
I knew what I was getting myself into the moment I saw the album cover pop up, so I steeled myself as best as I could. I have tremendous respect for Loretta Lynn (and Dolly, and Tammy, et al). But this has to be my absolute least favorite genre of music. This specific whiny (vocally, lyrically, and musically), vibrato-laden subset of country. I just cannot stand it. I'm not taking the seconds to break it down. If her name wasn't Loretta Lynn, it'd be a 1.
I don't drink alcohol.
This is the sort of stuff my dad would have cassettes of in the car growing up. I dont mind a bit of country, but something about this one recalled a weird sense of motion sickness. Maybe the combo of her voice and the steel guitar. Not saying it's bad but I had to turn it off
Loin d'être l'album de country le plus relou. Après, ça reste de la country.
too much of the vocal warbling
Beautiful voice but I hate country music. At least every song was under 3 minutes.
Classic country...all pretty much the same IMO. Can be decent if you're in the right mindset, but often not a big go-to for me. 2.5/5
Basic classic country. It's fine. Her best song isn't on it, and she wasn't as good as Dolly or most of her male counterparts (at least in my opinion)
This one wasn't exactly a defining one in my project so far. The album is fine, but didn't do anything to be memorable for me.
I really don’t enjoy this type of music, but I can appreciate that fir those who love country, this would be a 5. Her vocals are distinct and lovely for sure.
Her voice is nice, but beyond the title track many of these songs aren’t memorable. It’s perfectly serviceable, but it feels padded and it’s not even half an hour long.
Vocals are fine, but this is some country-song-writing-by-numbers stuff going on (as with the Marty Robbins one we had a while back, and that was from 1959), and even in 1967 this must have felt pretty retrograde. Some great stuff came out of country, but this is banal
Yes, she was a country music legend. But all of these songs just blend together into sameness.
I can appreciate the talent here. I do like some classic country, but this is not really my style.
She's got a great voice, and the album doesn't overstay it's welcome, but I can't like this shit man. It's what gives country a bad reputation
hard to imagine anything else on the list having “mom vibes” as strong as this album cover’s. i don’t think i’m totally opposed to this style but nothing on this album connected strongly with me.
Nothing wrong with some good old fashioned country and Loretta has the voice and style to match it. Not something that appeals to me very much and not something I will listen to again though.
Hausfrauenversion von Johnny Cash. Viele depri-Texte, meist um Liebe und Gefühl. Vermutlich perfekt um im Selbstmitleid mit den anderen unglücklichen Ehefrauen der 50er Jahre Likör zu "genießen".
The production stands out immediately, for the wrong reasons. It's a bit blurry, very much a relic of its time. Definitely in need of a remaster - and the fact that it isn't suggests there isn't much demand for it. The compositions are fine, nothing standout for the mid/late-60s, but good enough. I would've liked a little more variety in instrumentation than a country-twang lead guitar, simple 1-5-1-5 bass part, extremely plain drumming, and the one singer (who, to be fair, is great) occasionally with some backing vocals. There's only so much you can really glean from an album like this through a modern lens. No variation, no commitment to an "album experience" as a singular piece of art... It's really just a collection of similar-sounding songs, most of which aren't originals. Is this really part of a list of the 1000 most important albums in history? I found myself hunting down tiny snippets of songs that made them stand out from the crowd - if even a little bit. The two-note interjective lick in The Devil Gets His Due. The fluttery, elusive piano part in I'm Living In Two Worlds. I Got Caught for ending the album on such a goofy upbeat note (and sounding nearly identical to the opening track - a bold move!). And Don't Come Home A-Drinkin, if only because it's one of her hits and is actually decently catchy. But the lyrics throughout this record aren't anything impressive, despite lyricism usually being a key focus of country music. 2/5 Key tracks: Don't Come Home A-Drinkin', The Devil Gets His Due, I'm Living In Two Worlds
Oh man I know I'm gonna struggle with this one. This kind of country is one of my least favorite types of music. It's going to be a 29 minute slog for sure. But at least it will be a short slog. And a slog it was. Maybe not quite as bad as it could have been, but still I will never like this kind of music. So not for me. 1.5/5
5/10 Very nice Sunday morning type of album but not a returner probs
Shorty you putting yourself through this willingly…leave???
Not bad, but I’m not a fan of any Country music. It all sounds the same winey steel guitar
Pretty stereotypical country, both music and lyrics-wise.
I guess this list is making me realize I harbor a degree of mistrust towards country music. People say the older stuff is supposed to be more real and authentic etc… but I’m just hearing self-pity and melodrama.
Just the same countrysong over and over, with slightly different lyrics, but all the same theme. It was okay to listen to, but not interesting, or fun.
Funny to realize how little Country music has changed in 60 or so years. This album had one redeeming quality that saves it from being one of the worst listens on this list, that being is its brevity.
Old country, not my kind of music. Everything was too similar, at least it was short. 2/5 Won’t listen again
No country for young men.
Тетя поет песенки свои
South/ middle America wife beatery music very trad wifey 2/5
A country album, each s one a story about, lost love, losing love or getting rid of love. Not really my thing but she has a great voice
Fun little country album
Gave up after a few tracks C&W not my seen
2.5
I feel like I’m the man Loretta’s always singing about. I’m guilty of everything she’s frustrated or upset about in all of these songs. Mostly, this album just reminded me of how much of a dick I am.
Possibly the most country album I’ve ever heard.
Damn girl. Who hurt you?
It’s hard to give this album a low rating because Loretta Lynn is an icon but this album just isn’t my taste at all. 2.5
This album is for sure a favorite of many grandparents. It's got conservative southern charm all throughout- who's to say white people don't have culture? Loretta's voice is stunning and the main 'draw'. -no pun intended- of this album. It certainly is not the songwriting, but the songs are charming enough for the audience back then. They mosey right along. Loretta's timbre can be quite spellbinding at times, the twang is undeniably rich. The instrumentals definitely have that Cracker Barrel® gift shop vibe. This album makes me feel like an armadillo wandering in circles. Tunes from yesteryear and a truly different time. Authentic southern charm. Don't Come Home a Drinkin' was a successful conservative boppy of our heyday.
378/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
Country, and from a long time ago, is beyond what I would have selected. While I appreciated the album in terms of vocals, mixing so that you could hear the vocals, and instrumentation, it is unlikely to be something which goes in rotation. Thus, the 2 of 5.
In the original Blues Brothers movie Jake asks the owners of Bob’s Country Bunker what kind of music they have, the wife answers “both kinds, Country and Western”. This album also has both kinds.
I'm honestly surprised by how many albums open with the best track and then have all the rest be in a different style and worse. It shows that they knew what the best song was, so they put it first to pull in the listener, and then refused to make all the other in the similar style... Why? The opening song is actually pretty fun and energetic, which is when country works best, in my opinion. But the rest are just the same long notes sung with a rural accent and minimalist instruments in the background like in thousands other country albums. I don't care about vocals, so I don't find this style engaging. This album is just whatever, not something I would relisten. 5/10
4/10 - I can appreciate the gentle mellowness of this classic country album, however as someone who isn't the biggest country fan, I didn't particularly gel with it. I found the lyrics to have not much depth and the melodies were quite repeatable
We get it. You’re poly. The honkin and tonkin was fun but the lines were insufferable. Have your toxic relationships but please leave us barflies in peace. https://open.spotify.com/track/4ACS8SnOb3WDwtzNTxKMUB?si=d398337010bc4969
In a live setting this would be beautiful, as her voice is great. A lot of this, especially the slower stuff (aka most of the album), doesn’t resonate with me all that much.
man... kan dat wijf zagen zeg
No more old music pls but I didn’t listen so I can’t really rate harshly
I like Loretta's voice and how some huskiness comes out in the vocals. But hoo boy, the instrumentals are uninspiring and the lyrics are just toxic.
My first instinct was to designate this album artwork as the least inspiring cover of all time. But after finishing the album, now I'm questioning whether its actually satire? Because she looks like a prude preacher's wife, and the first half of the album sounds like a Taylor Swift album to me, where you have your songs about how your man is the most important thing in the world to you, and then you have your songs about being wronged by a lover/ex, etc, and willing to stick up for yourself when push comes to shove. But then as you work through the album, you realize that she isn't some hopeless romantic perpetuating the idea that women are only as good as their man - she's out on the town, cheating on her cheating man, and the whole works. And suddenly I'm wondering, is the prude on the album cover actually independent and fiery? Anyway, not the best music.
I'm sure this was a hit back in the day but it's just so dated now. Her voice is nice and it's your basic old country stuff, but meh. 4.75/10 (2.375/5)
That was no good.
As someone who loves country music, this just ain't it. The lyrics were good, especially for something as old as this. But the rest of it was just bad.
The type of country I could do without
extremamente chato. pelo amor de deus
mto legal pra quem gosta! achei um saco
Gets pretty boring
Ist nicht meins 2
What a depressing, miserable album. Saved by her beautiful voice and the fact it was only half an hour.
paskaa
Not a fan of country but a good album if you are
I’m not a fan of the constant vibrato she uses, and this era of country isn’t my favorite either. I didn’t mind some of Willie Nelson or John Prine’s music, but this is worse.
Solid bit of early country. High 2s
Too twangy for me
אין שום דבר רע באלבום פשוט לא אוהב
היה בסדר לא מיוחד
beh
feel like there’s so many albums like this
Slow and sleepy old country
3/5/25. Classic country, pretty simplistic but decent songs.
Well, Loretta has a fine voice, poor choice in politicians (Trump), and a terrible choice in husbands (married at 15 to a 21 year old who cheated on her and beat her). This was a chore, twangy guitar, bog simple songs and as much originality as a glass of milk.
Funny Country music.
This is better than a lot of country but still not really my thing
I try not to listen to country music. When I do, I usually have an uncontrollable desire to drink a lot of beer and do illegal things to farm animals. I see a pattern, country used to be music for people in unhappy relationships. Now it's every genre
not my style but not unbearable
I had to resist the temptation to leap out of my chair and start line dancing.
Eh, old country music, nothing stunning
I like my country cheesier and more George Strait-esque
ok, regionalzão hillybilly pacas. 2
Listened: 4/02/2025 Album no: 13 % rating: 57% Fave Song: Fun, but wouldn’t go out of my way to put it on again.
Sounds like a housewife in the 60s complaining about her husband in song.
# 405 : ugh country!
I think she should get a divorce, she just doesn't sound happy... 2 stars, because, at least it's not can.
If there was a Bechdel test for music this would’ve failed every song, not a win for feminism. It wasn’t a tough listen but extremely repetitive and very much feel I could’ve died without listening to this one
too slow and didn't like the tone of her voice, found her kinda screechy
Boring aah country
Redneck music. This is what Trump and MAGA voters listen to. I think she supported him in 2016. We need to judge music mainly on artistic terms, but sometimes it is not possible. Plus, this album really sucked.
Old school country
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
A collection of decently performed country weepies.
Pretty by-the-numbers old country. Kind of cute, but generally one note and a bit schmaltzy.
not into it
At least it's short.
Not my jam
ok. country
Speak your truth Loretta!!
2.9
First of all, this might be the greatest album title of all time. I imagine this is a landmark album for feminists. I don’t think there would many if any records filled with songs of a woman telling men she’s sick of their shit. So respect for that. However, it’s very campy and oldtimey. Honky Tonk hasn’t aged well and Ms. Lynn didn’t write the majority of the songs, which defeats the purpure 3.8/10
A lot of really good stuff came out in 1967 that pushed music significantly forward. This was not one of those things. Loretta seems like she was pretty popular, and her voice is nice enough, but frankly this is boring. It's old country, mostly covers (as was fairly typical). I would describe the tempo as 'plodding' throughout. The first song is the hit, and it's decent, but there's just very little that catches my attention after that. No major hate to Loretta, but this isn't it for me. Favorite song: Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind) Other: I Really Don't Want To Know, I'm Living In Two Worlds 11/14/24
Listening to this just after I got to the airport and found out my flight is delayed 1.5 hours so apologies if I'm harsh. I like her voice and as far as country goes it's pretty good. But pretty good country music still kinda sucks. Flight just got delayed another 30 :(((((( High 2. Also I hope she left whatever dude she was with when singing these songs.
Not my favourite genre, but the talent is there
2 stars
Dated and not for me
Disappointedly bog standard.
I find it difficult to talk about an album like this - it's so ordinary in this lane of '60s country music. That's not to say it was unenjoyable - it was quite peaceful and quick 30 minutes. I've listened to Loretta Lynn's music before with her 'Coal Miner's Daughter' album, primarily because I like Dolly Parton, another Nashville Sound artist. There's something almost too traditional about this album - musically it's quite static and doesn't bother exploring any new avenues. Loretta's vocals are the real highlight here, she's perfect in this lane, especially on a song like 'The Devil Gets His Due'. Aside from that nothing stuck out - it was chill though.
The lyrics aren't too subtle. Sounds like a rough life. Glad the album was shorter than a TV show.
Not much to like, except it was over in less than 30 minutes
Niet de vibes
Bit of a hard one to rate because I really can't see why anyone would listen to it today... I'm sorry😭 But like, she's right! And I hope she leaves him! But the guitar does sound like Spongebob
I like her voice but the rating gets knocked down 1 because of the content of the songs. 2/5
J’aurais dû fermer ma gueule hier, décidément le générateur possède une âme sombre à l’humour tordu
Not my thing, but not absolutely terrible. First song sounds like a 60s version of Its not Fair by Lily Allen. Happy it's over, nothing saved. Guessing the album help womens empowerment, good if so. 1.5*
Some clever writing, but still country. I think I heard the same song 4 times.
For the most part it is a bit of the female empowerment formula with slow old school country... certainly a heavy country slant of the "these boots were made for walking" tone. Loretta's voice is nice, but the subject matter feels cliched without being too interesting.
4.5/10 - It sounded exactly like the George Jones album but with a different singer, which I liked a little bit less. However, I was not in the mood today to be listening to this. Also I am surprised by the amount of songs that are in this style with lyrics about sex but in the least vulgar way possible yet they cover topics like cheating.
I know the album is only 28 minutes, but it felt a lot longer than that. Lynn has an excellent voice with fantastic control, but, and this is just my preference, a bit too much vibrato for me. I'll take Dolly or Patsy over her. I don't mind it, but no single song stands out, and I don't see myself coming back to it.
It feels like she’s the original spice girl! An album about men being wankers is probably still very relevant today. For me it was ok.
Some interesting classic country songs. A definite walk in the past. Not a bad listen if classic country is your thing.
Opening track is a classic...bottle is empty after that.
Meh. Wasnt offensive. Just not my jam.
I love all the user reviews, especially the multiple 1 star "Girl, leave your man already" ones. It's either that or glowing praise. Not much middle ground. I have a tough time with classic country. Most of it sounds very repetitive and thematically shallow to me. Thankfully this one rises above the dreck a bit. Musically it comes off a little more sophisticated with some nice instrumentation punching up the typical 2 chord country gallop thing, and Loretta has a lovely voice that shines above the repetitiveness of the songs. I wouldn't say I loved it but it had it's charming moments for sure. Still reeks of tears-in-your-beer country. I prefer the less produced folky/outlaw flavour. i'd give it a 2 or 2.5 though i'm happy to have gotten another one from outside my wheelhouse.
perfectly forgettable
I like that this was a pretty short album. Pretty outdated album nowadays, it feels like, but I am sure that this was popular back in 1967. Wasn't too bad as a background listen though.
Great voice but country
Pidän artistista ja hänen "stailistaan", mutta valitettavasti kappaleet eivät mielestäni kestä kylmän kriittistä tarkastelua. Eka ja vika, joo. Ehkä pari muutakin. Keskiosa on vähän kantrimaisen formalistista massaa. 2,5
This album sounds like the background music in a small-town dive, which isn't a bad thing. Unfortunately, it's not a good thing either, as the album is painfully generic.
Identikit stuff - couldn't tell where one song ended and the other started. Pleasant enough, but really not anything I'm interested in hearing again. Maybe her man would have done better if she had a bit of variety in her music?
Not my thing
This style of music works as a single song. An entire album is way too much. There isn't a single certified banger on here either.
Tråkigt.
Something about this is lovely, something about this is lonely and something about this is not my thing. Nice. Glad to have encountered. Unlikely to return. Neutral indifferent? 2 stars.
From a musical perspective, there is a lot of good things to say about this album. I won't, because country isn't my genre and I was bored to hell.
An extra star for the length
Could have gone without this
It has to be stated that Loretta Lynn delivers an incredible vocal performance. Unfortunately that's where the highlights end. The music is typical honky tonk country, nothing really special. And the lyrics are exactly what you'd expect on this kind of music. Toxic relationships and alcoholism. It's really not my cup of tea at all but it gets one extra point for Lynn's amazing voice.
Кантри для домохозяек. Папа, не пей.
Repetitive and boring country. Not my thing, some ok songs and moments are here but they’re outweighed by a lot of things. Meh.
country.
Standard old school country. Title track is great and catchy, but the rest not so much.
Twangy.
Good C&W from the 60's.
She sure can sing, and I could enjoy this well enough for a song or two at a time. But a whole album, even a short one, drags on my ears' enjoyment.
2 stars for Radio 2 music
The slide guitar was the best part. 2 scoops of vanilla out of 5 🍦🍦
Not a fan of county
Don't Come Home A Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind) is a pretty sad half an hour of country music about broken relationships and living in misery, which is bleak, but not exactly unique to the genre. Her voice is lovely and has the vulnerability needed for that sort of record but the rest of the music is pretty paint-by-numbers country and pales by comparison to the Dolly Parton album we had a fortnight ago. A high 2, probably, it's not memorable, but there are moments of quality in there.
Pretty grim stuff, the lyrics and themes behind it are really sad, but the backing music is a mix between melancholy and bizarrely upbeat. Doesn't really click for me, her voice is nice enough, but nothing really gripped me through a couple of listens. 2/5.
To my ears this is the worst kind of plinky plonk country - though I am sure that those that love country may have a completely different view.
Chillige Country Musik, nichts zum aufmerksam hören 2/5
I once read GONE WITH THE WIND and thought it must be the origin or reflection of about every rascist trope in the US. In the same vein, I think every mock leveled at country music must be on this album - except she left out her truck and her dog. This set of ditties averages just over 2 minutes - ready made for the Eddy Arnold in your 65 chevy. Mostly, it sounds like an America I was never part of, nor wanted to be.
Pretty much just an average country album to me
Leuke muziek als je country lief hebt, maar in het algemeen is het wat recht-door-zee muziek en niet heel bijzonder. **
It's just another country album that's officially not my personal preference, but I enjoyed the first song. It sounds old school, even for the '60s.
I guess this is another one of those albums that was made before the invention of songs that aren't about love
God damn, this is one angry woman. Why don't you leave the bastard, Loretta? At least it takes two to tango, and as Loretta said herself about her own marriage: "he never hit me one time that I didn't hit him back twice." I'd guess that songs like "The Shoe goes on the other foot tonight", and "I got caught", about a woman being unfaithful, and not being sorry about it at all, made quite some waves in USA in the late sixties. Great lyrics, not my kind of music at all.
Plinky plonky country outdated social values meh
Sja. Prima country opzich. Maar ik ben er echt na een paar nummers al wel klaar mee. Ik ga dit nou niet echt snel vaker opzetten. Laat staan dat het totaal niet goed door de tijd gekomen is, met een nummer als 'Don't Come Home A Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind)'. As boomer as it gets.
I mean I guess it’s good for country, I really don’t know, it literally sounds all the same. Stop crying over men, they aren’t even worth the sheet music used for this. Like there goes my reason for living?? Bitch be so fucking for real, unless he died, condolences. I also don’t like country
It's hard to imagine how a 28 minute album dragged so much. There were a couple of songs that I really liked too. Definitely a lot more complex than a lot of country music. It even made me feel like I was playing Fall Out New Vegas as times which might be why I'm rating it as high as I am. Overall I thought it was pretty repetitive and I don't know how much she really innovated on the genre.
It just not for me. Too country. 4/10
Country
Twenty-eight minutes of complaining about shitty partners.
Not my type of music but I'll give it two stars for its popularity back in the day.
This was a grind to get through. A whole album of Loretta complaining about her abusive relationship. Instead of feeding your persecution complex, just leave him ffs. I think hearing one of these songs in isolation, or in a playlist would be fine, but hearing them all together like this is grating.
I love Loretta Lynn’s voice. But this doesn’t feel like one of her essential records. A pleasant enough listen. I doubt I listen to any of these again. 2.5/5
Can’t say Loretta doesn’t have a good voice but this album ain’t my thing.
I wanted to like it but the songs aren't good. Well sung and played well though.
Great title. Impressive how she manages to fit so many syllables into ni-i-i-i-ight. Good in its genre; not for me.
I like country music in some ways. But this isn’t it for me. 2/5
Could have done with skipping this album, it's not my style or taste. Lots of treble, almost no bass or even mid-range tones throughout. Reminds me of my grandparents and their gramophone records though, so it gets an extra star.
Oh, shut up, Loretta! Your man probably wouldn't have to come home a drinkin' if you could stop being home a whinin' constantly.
It was ok, for very much not a country fan I appreciate her voice and could picture a time where I might enjoy listening to this
Really not a country fan, no matter how hard I try!
Shit marriage + slide guitar = country music
Another country album that I didn’t enjoy. I do feel a bit sorry for poor Loretta though, sounds like she’s been with a lot of terrible men.
There’s nothing technically wrong with it, it’s just boring.
not a fan of the country sounds, but some songs are quite catchy. Fairly strange to listen to half an hour of bad lovers. favourite track : 'The Shoe Goes on the Other Foot Tonight'
Nice wavering sound to voice. All the songs sound kind of the same.
Tolerable but that’s about it
This was sad and also pretty clever for its time.
Not every song made me wish the day was over
An archetypal country album. The songs are stories with the customary tropes and sum up the genre. Her voice is so country she might as well be playing a banjo in a hay barn with a bottle of whiskey at her feet and straw in her teeth. It takes a bit more than this to engage me in Country. It’s all a bit too one-note and devoid of variety but it’s fine. More a 2.5 but it’s all covers and colourless
Meh… I feel I should love her. And I did like ‘A Coal Miner’s Daughter’.
If this were the first release of Loretta Lynn's, I might have written off the male pandering lyrics to be something that was entirely out of her control. But I've got to think that, even in 1967, on the 10th album, Lynn must have had some say in the material, and if this is what stood for feminism... ugh. I was pretty disappointed in the whole affair, as it were. After listening to Dolly and Emmylou, I also can't say Lynn's is my favorite vocal effort — at least on this album. I found this rather tedious.
Didn't age well
1. Don’t Come Home a-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind) - very old style country so don’t love it 2. I Really Don’t Want To Know 3. Tomorrow Never Comes 4. There Goes My Everything 5. The Shoe Goes On the Other Foot Tonight 6. Saint To a Sinner 7. The Devil Gets His Due 8. I Can’t Keep Away from You 9. I’m Living In Two Worlds 10. Get What’cha Got and Go 11. Making Plans 12. I Got Caught Very traditional country so I do not like it sorry
Meh, it was relaxing, I could see listening to it in my grandparnets house while sipping tea and it would be better than the alternative. But it's kind of a downer.
Country folksy music. Not the worst thing ever. Not great
Great lyrics, with a nice touch of feminist wit and a heartbreakingly honest sadness in places. But the trite, predictable arrangements let it down.
It’s ok, not my thing really but nothing especially bad
Nice singer. Songs the usual generic country/blues standards, quite boring
For me country is all about the stories and for some reason this collection of songs didn't grab me. The title track was good but I soon got bored even though the length of the album is shy of 30 minutes. Maybe I wasn't in the mood for country today. A strong 2 or a weak 3 from me.
2+ kotu się trochę podobało
This just kind of made me laugh. It wasn’t the worst thing i’ve heard but it was from like 80000 years ago. Not to be offensive heheh but yeah and short which I like but just made me laugh.
Yeehaw kul med lite country. Tråkigt att albumet var fett tråkigt. Favorit: the devil gets his due
Very country. It’s definitely better than modern pop-country, but still not the kind of thing I really enjoy. 2/5
It's pretty simple, folks. You go out a drinking'? And then you come home and dare to think you might get some lovin' that you had on your mind? THINK AGAIN. Loved that title song and love her voice, but this one is just too much of a single musical pattern repeated twelve times. By the time you get through the first verse you know exactly how the rest of the song is gonna go and, in most instances, you know exactly what the title of the song is at that exact moment because it's the first line of the chorus. Every single time. "Get What 'Cha Got and Go" had a little zest to it that made it stand out, but mostly I just liked that the whole entire album was basically Lynn railing against a no-good, drinking, cheating husband... and then ends with a song about how she cheated, too. Whoopsie! Lol.
nice voice and god old country and western.
For a different time
Country!
Really disliked this album despite the good singer first song was good tjo
Liked first song - didn’t outright hate the rest, just seemed repetitive
Album #: 210 first impressions: ...this is the same Coal Miner's Daughter Loretta Lynn? after listening through: Oh, ok so this is what I thought country sounded like growing up. And this is what I didn't like. I find it cheesy, whiny, and dull. I guess I appreciate the storytelling. Although the stories themselves are simply a rude reminder of how we all suffer under toxic masculinity. I guess I still value the and emotional vulnerability, and do think she's a talented singer. "I Really Don't Want to Know" must have been killer live w/ the dynamics and range showcased; the harmonies on "There Goes my Everything" are pretty. But it all kind of blended together for me. Too many similar tempos and themes; lots of variation on "my man sucks, here's a whiny slide guitar solo." post-reading reviews/wiki: not surprised at the range of people's feelings on this album; also surprised no one mentioned how this record sounds positively ancient (read: bad) compared to other records from around this time. recommended for: divorcees having sad coffee at a truck stop in flyover country? Idk relisten?: i immediately gave it a relisten after realizing that I did really like other albums of hers I've heard. I don't think I'll be doing that again.
She can sing well, and the instrumental is ok. 60s country tends to be bearable. But I didn't see anything exceptional here, couldn't even pick out a song I liked.
Nieszczęśliwa żona śpiewa o pijaku mężu.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it was decent Favourite song: didn’t have one
2/5. A lot of these covers do not bring much to be desired. Sure, Loretta has a good voice but it doesn’t convince me she is feeing what she is singing. However, the few songs she has written herself are excellent. If the whole album was original material, might be a near perfect album. Best song: Don’t Come Home A Drinkin’, I Got Caught
I didn't like it. She's got the perfect singing voice for country music but the melodies and the lyrics didn't do anything for me.
Bland country
Aika karmeeta länkkäriä. Ei oikeen lähde. 2/5
Country meh
BL: Loretta Lynn is a name i'd heard before but never listened to until this, i like the album cover AL: it all felt quite samey. It was definitely a zero filler album and was very short and snappy however I felt that there wasn’t much to it. I can understand why for the time this might have resonated however this didn’t ring any bells for me FT: “there goes my everything” 2/5
I really can’t stand this crooner shit. +1 star for being listenable.
50’er country, vokalen er god nok, men lidt for nemt
Boring
:))
Basic country music
Fine old fashioned country. A lot of similar songs. Nothing super amazing. At least it was short.
it wasn't entertaining. 2.
Every aspect of tear jerkers done to perfection. I hate tear jerkers. 2 stars for effort.
I am not really a great lover of this type of music. The country twang is at times off putting. It is pleasant record overall, and I shall probably revisit the first couple of tracks sometime. I cannot see myself revisiting this in full in the future however.
Loretta Lynn is cool, just not my particular brand of music. But it is nice checking out what I normally wouldn't listen to every once in awhile.
Country & Western in its worst form, regardless her nice voise
Låter som all annan sån här musik
Fairly pleasant to listen to but not really my thing. Quite funny too! I love the cover.
It's fine, but old C&W music just doesn't excite me. I'm sure if I listen to it enough it would grow on me, but do I really want that? 2.5
Classic Country - not for me. 1.5/5
Country...
Glad I got to hear this because without this list I wouldn’t have. Very enjoyable.
Pretty single paced, no adventurerous dullsville
"I really don't want to know" is very relaxing. Good easy listening. Nothing that really wows me but it is good to have on while I'm doing something else or hanging out with a friend.
61/100: Lyrically, a very impressive album, and definitely the type of album I would enjoy. But I’m actually listening to this album, I found I didn’t really enjoy it very much at all. I don’t think that old country sound will ever grow on me, but I have profound respect for the artists in that era/genre and their touching, morose, and altogether astute way with words.
Loretta was a groundbreaking artist....this is just not my cup of tea.
Honestly, I need to listen to it one more time.
Música tradicional americana de estilo un tanto country.
This relationship is unhealthy. Move on.
you're making plans to leave me, I'm making plans to miss you
Not a big fan of this kind of weapy moany country music. But it wasn’t terrible.
Not my cup of tea to be fair
2 ⭐️, which is a 5⭐️ in country terms because country music is shite 👍🏾
The messages in her songs are chosen to resonate with woman. Perhaps my maleness got in the way and has subconsciously had a negative impact, but I find that most of the songs on this album, including title song, don't really do anything for me and haven't aged well. Tomorrow Never Comes shows that she can sing, even if the song is lame. Her vocals are also highlighted on I'm Living in Two Worlds which I like. I also like The Devil Gets His Due. I never did see Coalminer's Daughter so don't know her story. I heard it's a good movie so perhaps I should watch it if I'm going to give her another listen.
Suppose this was the Taylor Swift of its day. Some of the lyrics cracked me up. It seemed to have a simple message neatly summarised in the album title. The music was all twangy guitar and blues grass bollox. Interestingly there's a line in there about the 'devil's haircut' doing something and that is the only reason it's not getting a 1.
Not a country fan, but this wasn't as bad as some
Not awful but pretty much what I expected.
Wasn’t really for me, but I enjoyed I Got Caught.
bruh
