Nice singer. Songs the usual generic country/blues standards, quite boring

Once again it started off with scepticism, as the cover art looks like an invitation card to dinners at an Amish place in the 50s. Lucikly it turned out to be a very nice album! What a wonderful voice she has, she sings very well. It's hard for me to give it more than a solid 3 in the middle, because even though I can appreciate it when in certain mood and it genuinely made me happy to listen to, it's not really something I usually put on myself. It's also hard to know how this album from 67 has impacted the genre.

For me country is all about the stories and for some reason this collection of songs didn't grab me. The title track was good but I soon got bored even though the length of the album is shy of 30 minutes. Maybe I wasn't in the mood for country today. A strong 2 or a weak 3 from me.

Beautiful voice, fun listen

4.0 - Straight-shooting classic country that's equal parts snappy, twangy, sassy and sweet. Every song clocks in at that 2-3 minute sweet spot, never overstaying its welcome. Lynn deftly guides each song with just enough bravado and oomph. The backing band similarly never minces a note. Here's another near-perfect blues-inflected country pop record for the ages. I especially like songs that credit Lynn as a songwriter, especially the closer "I Got Caught."

Reminded me of Country Bear Jamboree at the Magic Kingdom (and that's a good thing!)

This just kind of made me laugh. It wasn’t the worst thing i’ve heard but it was from like 80000 years ago. Not to be offensive heheh but yeah and short which I like but just made me laugh.

Country is definitely far far outside my preferred genres, and I'll admit to bordering on intolerant of it at times but I get why this one is here - a woman's voice hasn't exactly been welcomed in stupid society throughout history and the American South in particular sure does love themselves some stupid society. I make no apologies for that statement but at the same time acknowledge my own hypocrisy here - funny when you let your mind open up a little bit, isn't it? Once this album started I immediately was itchy from the simple chord progressions and predictable lyrics... but again: preconceived notions and all... Once I stopped thinking about how I feel about "country music" and after letting it play through for about 20 minutes I find myself ... enjoying the mood? And I'm not much a fan of (any) vocals in general but her voice really does shine. So kudos and credit to her (limited as her thinking may have been in later life ....) for breaking through the male Nashville walls and even though this/she probably deserves higher I'll give a 3 for enduring impact and paving the way for not just country artists but anyone that doesn't fit in "the box" whatever it may be. 6/10 3 stars.

I find the pathos so overbearing that it's comical. And I'm not keen on steel guitars. No doubt it is a leading exponent of the the C&W genre, but it all sounds the same to me.

Never heard a Loretta Lynn album and this one was really good. The album cover picture is deceptive as she looks very demure, but this is an angry album about cheating and I am very much enjoying it. I think this is a must-listen, because it's a window into pre-70's country music.

I don't really love Loretta Lynn, but there is a sort of cohesive portrait that this all paints that holds my attention. I think the first song slaps and then the rest are very good examples of the sort simple arrangement country songs that I can dig. 3.5 stars.

I often enter into these old country records with a hint of trepidation - yet more regularly than not, I end up having a good time. This is great - gutsy, colourful singing (with no little skill) and a pungent honky-tonk feel to the arrangements combined to make this a winner. There's a punchiness in the lyrics that's very appealing too - direct, but oozing with feeling. Pretty fantastic. Loretta Lynn, eh?

It's pretty simple, folks. You go out a drinking'? And then you come home and dare to think you might get some lovin' that you had on your mind? THINK AGAIN. Loved that title song and love her voice, but this one is just too much of a single musical pattern repeated twelve times. By the time you get through the first verse you know exactly how the rest of the song is gonna go and, in most instances, you know exactly what the title of the song is at that exact moment because it's the first line of the chorus. Every single time. "Get What 'Cha Got and Go" had a little zest to it that made it stand out, but mostly I just liked that the whole entire album was basically Lynn railing against a no-good, drinking, cheating husband... and then ends with a song about how she cheated, too. Whoopsie! Lol.

the queen of country, loretta lynn, with an album full of songs about what a p.o.s. her man is. she pulls no punches with this one and i, for one, am here for it. a classic country… classic.

What a voice. I wish her more woman power songs would have met more radio play, but the times dictated she's "Stand by your man" instead of "The Shoe is on the Other Foot". Really great overall.

This album actually goes really hard. What I thought would be your stereotypical Christian country album was full of life lessons for your strong independent 60's wife. Don't you dare come home drunk and horny is what she says, and who can blame her? I had a really great time listening to this and will again. Stand out track: The Shoe Goes on the Other Foot Tonight

This was a fun album. I might be too generous since it is the first country album from this list, but the songs were fun and even humorous at times. I will say the constant theme of infidelity got a little stale for me. I have to give props for the story that plays out through the album, but looking at the point of view of the singer she was kind of annoying. Like because he heated on me I'm just gonna cheat on him and then upset when he leaves me. Kind of a face palm moment for me.

Is this an album of collection of songs - and just said? Afraid so. Country would benefit from more concepts behind their albums. Loretta Lynn's work is the bet example of this. All the songs are quite enjoyable but there is a certain similarity around that makes the whole thing not really stick in your mind.

By glob, I wanted to hate this. But I actually kind of like it. I don't listen to a lot country, except for some Johnny Cash. I love Cash's pre-gospel era, can tolerate the post era, and I expected for Loretta Lynn to be worse. But I guess it's somewhere between. So yeah. Easy listen. None of the tracks annoyed me. Solid 3/5.

Two-thirds of the way through this project and there hasn't been a single album by Tammy Wynette or Patsy Cline or even Dolly Parton. Where have all the classic country queens been? So hooray for Loretta Lynn finally making the list! These were heartfelt songs giving a needed voice to so many women's emotions (my wife said "amen!" when I told her the title). This had never been the sort of music I listened to much before, but I want to hear more.

Sometimes these classic country tunes are a bit sleepy to me, and last night when I started the album, that is exactly what it did to me...made me sleepy. I wasn't complaining, but it wasn't really making me all that excited. Then this morning when I started where I left off, it was awesome and catchy and classic. Once I finished, I started it again, and loved it.

Wonderful. I wish it was twice as long.

Ten or so years ago I was working on a playlist for an anniversary party where classic country was the primary fare. That’s when I discovered this album with its 60’s feminist streak I immediately loved. Absolutely fantastic classic country with those classic themes delivered by that incredible Loretta Lynn voice!

Album #: 210 first impressions: ...this is the same Coal Miner's Daughter Loretta Lynn? after listening through: Oh, ok so this is what I thought country sounded like growing up. And this is what I didn't like. I find it cheesy, whiny, and dull. I guess I appreciate the storytelling. Although the stories themselves are simply a rude reminder of how we all suffer under toxic masculinity. I guess I still value the and emotional vulnerability, and do think she's a talented singer. "I Really Don't Want to Know" must have been killer live w/ the dynamics and range showcased; the harmonies on "There Goes my Everything" are pretty. But it all kind of blended together for me. Too many similar tempos and themes; lots of variation on "my man sucks, here's a whiny slide guitar solo." post-reading reviews/wiki: not surprised at the range of people's feelings on this album; also surprised no one mentioned how this record sounds positively ancient (read: bad) compared to other records from around this time. recommended for: divorcees having sad coffee at a truck stop in flyover country? Idk relisten?: i immediately gave it a relisten after realizing that I did really like other albums of hers I've heard. I don't think I'll be doing that again.

Yee--and fans of women having a message to convey should really pay attention to this--haw. Yes, Loretta Lynn was quite a fascinating figure from the C&W world. I even own a best of album from her: *Coal Miner's Daughter"*, and I recommend it if you want to know a little more about her music and the way she used it to call the bullshit of men and all the shitty ways they could treat their wives (including her own husband / manager!). That being said, why selecting this particular album when there were many others from her that had the same structure and impact? Each of these LPs included a very "topical" and personal single (example "The Pill", about married women's contraception), a few other cuts also written by Loretta, and then far less striking tracks written by others, unfortunately. In other words, it was always the same thing. Which tends to suggest that Lynn was more a "singles" artist than an "albums" artist. Heck, when it comes to essential LPs by Loretta Lynn, that later comeback album Jack White produced for her is even a better candidate. All the songs were written by her there, and as a consequence, the whole thing was far better, even if it was decades after her heyday. So about *Don't Come Home A Drinkin'*, my overall grade for the purposes of this list of essential records is 3/5. Which translated to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes. Next, please. Great production. Songs just wash over me. And I hate the drearyness.

She can sing well, and the instrumental is ok. 60s country tends to be bearable. But I didn't see anything exceptional here, couldn't even pick out a song I liked.

Loretta Lynn seems like she was a powerhouse of a woman, from her vocals, her story telling, and potentially not putting up with shit from men in an era where that was not the norm. I liked her folk story telling through song, her voice could power through any note. Although the songs seem to wash together at some point, I still fill as though this woman had an overarching impact on today.

Cute. But she needs a better man. That guy sounds like a jerk to her.

Don't like country music at the best of times but this mardy Dolly knock off was a bad example of it. Loretta needs to choose her partners better as this bunch of pricks have driven her to write the same song a bunch of times. At least Dolly adds jaunty tunes to the songs that are actually about job issues and domestic violence. Down with this sort of thing.

Perhaps if Loretta spent less time singing and recording songs, and more time doing as her husband told her, she may be in a better place, but alas

Title track is amazing, 5 stars for sure but the rest of the album get's a bit repetitive. Like most classic country, these artist were more singles orientated than album.

Don’t Come Drinkin’ is such a great tune. Lynn’s sassy, strong songs (above, and Shoe Goes in the Other Foot) are great and I love the playing on this record. The slower songs aren’t my thing, although the pedal steel is nice.

Not my genre and some of the lyrics have not aged well. Still, didn't mind having it on.

This is the usual type of music I say I don't like, but there's something about Lynn that's so complelling that you can't help but notice. I prefer Coal Miner's Daughter to this one, but this one was perfectly fine to listen to. Although I have to say that the quality of the recording itself took me out of the music a little bit, it's pretty bad.

I wouldn't listen to it often but this is nostalgic country to the nth degree.

A solid representation of what 60s country music was. It has some charm, love Loretta’s voice and the slide guitar; however, it wore me out after the 4th song.

BL: Loretta Lynn is a name i'd heard before but never listened to until this, i like the album cover AL: it all felt quite samey. It was definitely a zero filler album and was very short and snappy however I felt that there wasn’t much to it. I can understand why for the time this might have resonated however this didn’t ring any bells for me FT: “there goes my everything” 2/5

Love this era of country

This list has really cemented for me how absolutely in the pocket I am for 60s country/western music in general, but specifically 60s country/western music from powerful women who hate their drunk husbands.

I would say that it's well executed, but it gets a bit repetitive. I feel like most country songs are by men, so it was interesting to hear a woman's perspective in this genre.

I had a pretty good feeling I was going to like this based on the fact I knew it was country, and I knew people hated this album. I was correct. This album's message is basically "My man is a POS but so am I." Respect.

I get why this was a big record for women in the late 60's and 70's. The lyrics are super awesome. I love them. And old school country has it's charm. This is very much not my thing. But I am scoring this high none the less. This isn't my kind of banger. But it is a banger.

I’ve certainly said this before, but country music is a hard sell for me. The older stuff, such as today’s album, is my preferred variation of it, but it’s still never something I’d seek out on my own. Let’s see if Loretta Lynn can change my mind on that! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind) I honestly did quite enjoy the opening track here which I didn’t expect. However, much like the drink itself, this album was fine to dip into every now and then, but consuming the whole thing agitated my mental state. There was just too much twang for my taste, and the lyrics in parts were just bizarre. I Really Don’t Want To Know is about not wanting to know how many people her partner has slept with even if she is literally asking, and I Got Caught is all about cheating on your partner. The title track aside, this really wasn’t to my taste at all.

Kinda get the gist after a couple of songs. Her man sucks and she either hates that fact more than anything or doesn't care at all. Still not bad overall and I imagine some of the songs would grow on you the more you listen.

I never understood the attraction of C&W, but I was surprised by the snetiments expressed by the lyrics of the title track. Otherwise, not an album for me.

A very on the nose album, I can see a LOT of housewives in the 60s rinse this LP on their record players. Imagining themselves as the narrator of these songs and becoming sick of their husbands shenanigans and going off and becoming the wild women they wished they were - all whilst dragging on a cigarette and sipping on a cocktail. Love it for what it is and represents but won't be a part of my regular rotation anytime soon. I don't mind a bit of melodic twangy country. This is almost too much of it but every time I got bored I looked at that velour jacket and sports shirt combo on the album cover and was invigorated again.

Loretta Lynn is some very old country. This feels similar to the Jingles of the 50's. So wholesome it hurts.

I am not really a great lover of this type of music. The country twang is at times off putting. It is pleasant record overall, and I shall probably revisit the first couple of tracks sometime. I cannot see myself revisiting this in full in the future however.

I don't listen to very much country music, old or new, so this was a nice departure for me. I'd definitely heard of Loretta Lynn and I've heard a few of her songs before, although I think everything on this album is new to me. She has an excellent voice -- really controls it so well yet delivers with emotion. There are some great musicians performing on these recordings, too. The band plays with nice precision and restraint. Although it's not the kind of music or album I imagine coming back to, I can appreciate how good it is for its style and genre.

Ok, so country music ain’t my thing at all. For the same reasons as everyone else who doesn’t like it. How many songs about cheatin’ lowlife ratbags can one listen to in all honesty? However, Loretta has a voice that makes me think of the Aunt that everyone fancies and used to give you a cuddle that made you feel funny… I liked it, I didn’t love it though and I’ll never look to revisit it but it was enjoyable for what it was I suppose.

This is great. I just went to a screening of "Coal Miner's Daughter" very recently, so she has been on my mind. 12 songs in 28 minutes is great! All of these songs are great, classic Loretta Lynn. Could listen to her all day.

A beautifully crafted, classic country album. Lynn puts mistreated southern women and their difficult relationship with their men front and centre and in turn makes this a reclamation of their dignity and pride. My growing love for this music is an unexpected and welcome consequence of this brilliant listening project.

Some good old fashioned country, not the pop/rock country that we get these days. It's nice not hearing about 'the good ol' USA,' and 'my pickup truck,' and 'starin' at the bottom of a bottle' that permeates every modern country song. It's not as good as Dolly in her prime, but it's a solid, enjoyable country album.

Loretta's got a lovely voice and the band play very professionally. This plays along pleasantly enough: I'm finding even fillers like 'Tomorrow never comes' easy playing as a background sound. I'm happy I played this but the only reason was this poll. More educational than pleasurable and at 28 minutes it's not exactly value for money.......

61/100: Lyrically, a very impressive album, and definitely the type of album I would enjoy. But I’m actually listening to this album, I found I didn’t really enjoy it very much at all. I don’t think that old country sound will ever grow on me, but I have profound respect for the artists in that era/genre and their touching, morose, and altogether astute way with words.

I enjoyed this. It was short. The end.

I'm not big into country music and I'm well aware of that. But going through this challenge of listening of all these albums has definitely opened me up to this genre. Loretta's singing is beautiful, has mildly repetitive lyrics (I assume this is due to the era). I can appreciate it for what it is, but being said probably wouldn't listen again. Saved tracks: The Shoe Goes On The Other Foot Tonight, I Can't Keep Away From You, Tomorrow Never Comes, Get What 'Cha Got and Go

I'm guessing this was another "not-random" album just like The Queen is Dead due to Loretta Lynn dying yesterday. Regardless, I appreciate it because Loretta has a great voice and made pretty progressive music for the 1960s country scene. The title track was great and all of the other songs were super fun. It's one of those albums where you can't go wrong with any of the songs and it's just a straight up fun album.

Well that was painful. I thought this was unlistenably dull and boring. For a 28 minute album, it sure felt like being trapped in a time vortex for 60 years. Hopefully there's not too many country albums left on this list. Does anybody outside 'Murica even enjoy this genre?

There sure was a lot going on in 1967! I find the aggressively non-glamorous, dare I say homemaker, vibe of the cover art interesting considering the album title and overall content. The album starts strong with the attitude filled title track and the rest of the tracks clippity-clop along after at a fair pace. Loretta has full and effective control over her instrument and a flawless backing band. The lyrical content is full on women scorned with a sweet candy shell. The overarching theme seems to be "it's not all my fault". Although I wouldn't want to tangle with her (or her man!), I do think this material would be a hoot to see live. That said, this is full twang territory and a lot to take all at once. Also I think possibly two wrongs don't make a right; the point of view, though arguably feminist for 1967, feels as old fashioned to me now as the music. If I liked country I'm sure I would love this album, but I don't. I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would, but I didn't love it.

i got about 30 seconds in to 3 songs before i could confirm that i fucking hate this shit. it is the sound of daytime in miserable dingy pubs full of smoke where no one talks to each other.

Really enjoyed this. Made me read up on Lynn and, Trump aside, she sounds amazing.

I can immediately see the influence and inspiration of Loretta's music had on Lurleen Lumpkin from the Simpsons. Seriously though, this album and music has been the influence of many aspiring female country music singers, including contemporary artist's such as, Neko Case. Most of the classic country music subject matter is covered, with a checklist of the essentials; drinking, lovin', cheating and don't need no man to run my life. Not my kind of music, but it was amusing and interesting.

The messages in her songs are chosen to resonate with woman. Perhaps my maleness got in the way and has subconsciously had a negative  impact,  but I find that most of the songs on this album, including title song, don't really do anything for me and haven't aged well.  Tomorrow Never Comes  shows that she can sing, even if the song is lame.  Her vocals are also highlighted on I'm Living in Two Worlds which I like. I also like The Devil Gets His Due. I never did see Coalminer's Daughter so don't know her story. I heard it's a good movie so perhaps I should watch it if I'm going to give her another listen.

A great voice, great hurtin' songs, many with reference to the devil and a few about cheatin' on a guy as a reprisal for him cheatin' on you. I like the fact that she and her sister wrote the title track which hit #1.

An enjoyable 28 minute album with the usual country instrumentation (steel guitar, honky-tonk piano, stand up bass). The main attraction though is Loretta Lynn's sweetly robust vocals. The format of an up-tempo track followed by a ballad works really well, mainly because Lynn handles both with equal aplomb. Amongst the other progressive sounds pop sounds of 1967 (Jimi Hendrix, The Doors etc) this probably sounded a bit dated even then, but on it's own term it's a lovely, charming record. I may well be a closet country music fan!

Suppose this was the Taylor Swift of its day. Some of the lyrics cracked me up. It seemed to have a simple message neatly summarised in the album title. The music was all twangy guitar and blues grass bollox. Interestingly there's a line in there about the 'devil's haircut' doing something and that is the only reason it's not getting a 1.

Is a zero stars rating possible? Thankfully none of those times were catchy.

My initial thought was, bah, country & western, and that the title was amusing. Then midway through the opening track and realised the subject matter was more serious than the initial lightheartedness. I think Loretta Lynn brings the honesty and grit of a woman who is frustrated with the status quo (in the mid/late-60s) and wants to be treated better. Doubt I'd choose to listen again, but I respect it and suspect she gave a voice to many a frustrated housewife.

Not awful but pretty much what I expected.

Not my usual listen, I'll be honest. I don't know much about country. Not something I would listen to again but it was quite fun and she has a superb voice.

Everything about this. The slide guitar. The fantastic honky tonk riffs. This album is top notch. This one wants me to fire up the big rig and get those 18 wheels truckin down I-10 into the arms of a stranger. It's a lullaby for cheaters and broken hearts. Fabulous piece of Americana and it was lovely to hear for the first time.

Wasn’t really for me, but I enjoyed I Got Caught.

It’s like an idiots guide to country music, tells it as it is, all the country rhythms and southern sounds. Did make me feel a bit sad as she’s obviously been with quite a few drunks in her life. I liked it.

Again, not really a genre I enjoy... I'm too tired again to do song-by-song commentary. This album as a whole is ok, I don't hate it, but I will not be revisiting it. Very boring country in my opinion. Loretta Lynn has a nice set of pipes, but honestly everything else is not working for me on this album. Get What 'Cha Got And Go is the top song for me, not sure why, but it is.

I suppose they added this one because it's her breakthrough in terms of bringing feminism to country music, but Coal Miner's Daughter is right there. Best track: I Really Don't Want to Know

It's alright. It's not enough for me to add it to my music library, however it's worth mentioning that in itself it's pretty good. Loretta has a pleasant voice and some good tunes to sing to. I would want a bit more though. Highlights: Don't Come Home A-Drinkin', I Really Don't Want To Know

Wow. It's staggering how absolutely anti-feminist the lyrics on this album are. That alone would be enough to ensure this one doesn't get a good rating. The music really isn't doing anything to change my mind either. It's boring, unimaginative and cringey. It doesn't hurt my ears which saves it from a 1 star rating, but just barely.

This album is just typical old country songs you'd hear at a fair or inside a restaurant. Not much to note apart from that. I really have no clue what it's doing on this list, but here we are. Favorite track: The Shoe Goes On The Other Foot Tonight

Kind of reminds me of the music my parents listened to. Ver-r-r-r-r-r-r-ry twangy. But in a good way. Songs not stretched out too long. There's something to be said about succinctness.

I struggled to rate this one, and listened to it repeatedly, so at least the album was short. One problem is I don't know many of the originals so it's hard for me to gauge how good her re-interpretations are. And then the backing music is standard fare in my opinion (barely noticeable), so I'm really evaluating her vocals. She can warble, that's for sure. But I don't know if it's enough for me to round up a 3.5 to a 4.

The music doesn't do much for me (not a country fan except for a few exceptions), but I like her voice and there are some good lyrics. Lazy review today.

Listened Before? N I loved this album. A good first entry for classic 60s country western. Pros: the title track is amazing, her voice is great, and the rebellious undertones were probably pretty fresh at the time. Cons: slow in parts. If you’re not sad, the slow songs drag. Enjoyed this one much more than I expected to. Lynn and her genuine vocals carry each arrangement on a mix of pure simplicity, true sorrow, and honest emotions.

Loretta is a truly wonderful performer. There's a reason why she's a country music icon. The only thing keeping this album being a 5 for me is that some of the songs can start running together a bit towards the end of the album. Highly recommended.

I know that she's talented, but I have an immediate visceral reaction to the sound of country music and it just isn't good.

Never liked Country when it sounded like this.

Lovely vocals, loved the simple and universally relatable lyrics. I'm not a huge fan of folk music. I find it can get quite repetitive and it starts to feel formulaic after a while. And maybe it's just the time of year, but many tracks in this album reminded me of cheesy a slightly grating Christmas songs. The emotion in the music felt... sterilised? The rawness was removed so it fit into a neat little melody with similar instrumentals. I did like the pure vengeance in "Saint to Sinner" though :D Didn't listen to the full album but I appreciate why this would be on the list. Tempted to give a 2 but I won't let my personal bias dictate the score too much. Don't imagine I'll revisit this, but I know that if I gave it a chance it would probably grow on me. Which, imo, is a sign of good music. My taste is too underdeveloped to appreciate it fully. Saved.
