Anti-USA commie gibberish
Another Morrissey album, another disappointment. I keep hoping that one will be somewhat reminiscent of The Smiths but they are always self indulgent shit talking sessions. His singing style just doesn’t match the instrumentals ever and in some songs its pretty awful. Maybe next time it’ll be a good Morrissey album but this one is just more of the same. 4/10
Morrissey has some fire tracks, whether with The Smiths or his solo stuff. This doesn't have that many, however. If I could really sit and ponder this a bit more, I might grant it a higher score, but thus is the curse of the of the album list extensiveness.
Almost impressively boring
There has been so much Morrissey, WHY
Never cared to listen to Morrissey’s solo work before but this confirmed my suspicion that he was the accent to Johnny Marr’s genius in the Smiths and not the other way around
It really pisses me off that this asshole gets 4 of his solo albums on this list, but we don't get any Phil Collins at all. His work with The Smiths would have been largely enough, imo.
The better Morrissey so far.
I just can't handle unfiltered Morrissey.
I really don't know how to rate this. He has the same pretentiousness and accent as Jimmy Carr who I can't stand and Morrisy just kills me with what he chooses to talk about. He's trying to be woke but in the shittiest way possible. He injects himself into the music so much and it's awful. That being said, I think I liked this more than the Smiths. There are some catchy tracks on here. I liked The first in the gang to die. I would give it a 3 but I wanted to give it a 1. I'll settle on a 2.
These lyrics are fucking terrible, and we all know that Morrissey as a person is terrible, so that's fairly expected. They ruin what is otherwise a fairly ok album. Like just change every word in every song and it'd be a halfway decent album. His cadence is always a bit rushed, but he did that with the Smiths as well and it's sort of part of the charm, if you're in to that kind of thing. I can't get over how corny and/or stupid the lyrics are. Also knowing he's a psychotic brexit banger moron really deteriorates the 1st grade level point of "Irish Heart, English Blood", just as an example. This was pretty bad.
I've always been very reluctant to check out Morrissey's solo stuff. Because, one, I don't like the guy at all. And, two, at least with 'The Smiths', you had Rourke's basslines and Marr's iconic guitar work to offset Morrissey's Morrisseyness. And look, I'd be lying if I said Morrissey's earwormy vocals and witty (and whiney) lyrical styles weren't a part of what makes The Smiths so special to me (especially on The Queen is Dead), but this album is just way too much Morrissey, and only Morrissey. The lyrics here are just as in-your-face and blunt as I'd expected. Which I'm fine with to a certain extent, I don't even disagree with Morrissey in a lot of political commentary here, especially with songs like 'America Is Not the World', 'Irish Blood, English Heart', and 'The World is Full of Crashing Bones'. But it's all just too much, and knowing how Morrissey is now, I can't help but see through the disingenuous nature of it all, given the guy's new ugly right-leaning politics. And you can pull that "Separate the art from the artist" stuff all you want, but when you pour this much of your personality into your music, it makes it kind of difficult to do that. And I'm sorry, but the guy was too old at this time to write a song as petty as 'I'm Not Sorry'. Either way, due to a multitude of factors (including over-produced and forgettable backing music), I didn't end up enjoying this melodramatic mess as much as I could've. Some enjoyable songs here, that I mentioned before ('I Like You' was also maybe the best song here), but as an album, it's not something I'd revisit, like ever.
Was not expecting to land negatively on this - parroting others that Morrissey sucks but I do tend to enjoy his music. I think the production on this is a bit thudding and a bit too polished and doesn’t cradle his annoying lyrics well enough for me
This whole album just gave off an air of pretentiousness. It's fine, if not a tad boring to listen to from an instrumental sense I guess, but that doesn't automatically mean I enjoyed my experience. Begrudgingly waiting for the 15 other Morrissey albums in this list I guess.
I think (hope) this is the last Morrissey album I'll be given. I've run out of stuff to say. It's alright as long as you don't listen to the words he's saying.
No no no
eh, first track was funny and Morriseys lyrics are always humerous.
Ummm no. Top 1001? Hardly. Love Morrissey as the lead of the smiths but how this album qualifies over his 1st album viva hate I don’t know. Too many questionable choices so far This shit is corny 2/5
The music on this album is just plain boring - there's no sense of surprise, no magic, no spark whatsoever. Morrissey's longtime musical collaborators, Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer, have once again provided the singer with the blandest of backing tracks (all played in a simplistic sub-glam rock style) and even though Morrissey is a gifted melodicist, he can't breathe any life into these plain-vanilla numbers (with the exception of "I'm Not Sorry", the only track on this record that distinguishes itself).
Really mid, sorry. Performative ah lyrics. I'm Not Sorry is my fave
Musically, I thought this was a very good album, 4/5 stars. I didn't like it quite as much as I have some of the other Morrissey music I have heard on this list. However, lyrically it is another story. This album just feels so pretentious and judgemental that listening to it was kind of a chore. Maybe others would feel differently, but it just kind of dragged the whole experience down.
If Morrissey wasn’t such a twatty little bellend, I might actually not dislike this. But he is so eat shit, Morrissey.
Really boring ploddy band. Nothing stands out here musically. The lyrics /vocals feels like someone trying too hard to be Morrissey, and largely failing. I don't get what he is trying to say here most of the time, other than "look at me, I'm controversial". Overthought and undercooked.
qué tío más moñas
I am generally a fan of Morrissey's lyrics and I don't mind his singing. His politics is so inane and the lyrics in this album is just dumb. There is one good line: "You just want to be friendly, which means you don't know me at all". That's classic. Not the rest of it.
The music’s fine, and the lyrics are mostly pretentious and self-interested. I try to separate the art from the artist but Morrissey makes it almost impossible to do that.
Morrissey, You Are The so much more annoying without johnny marr
the more i see of morrissey the more i see the death of me 💀 is no for me
bro needs finasteride Fav song: You Know I Couldn't Last
Day535 - this man has a lot of feelings
One note and boring
I don't mind the political lyrics, but the music is just so generic that it is uninteresting.
Great voice, tooo much politics, even for 2004
this just wasn’t what I expected and I’m a bit disappointed by it over all
-Okay, now let's add some Morrissey albums, say when -... Lyrics are extra retarded on this one. He literally dissed a fucking planet, I can't take this seriously
"I cant fucking wait until Morrissey dies - JPEGMAFIA" mogs this guy
No way that this racist fucker starts the album off by talking about justice and equal rights. Unfortunate that he of all people is extremely talented. Great album, but -2 stars for Morrissey.
Morrissey is definitely zero fun at parties
I actually kind of liked this album, too bad he's such a dick.
Lesbian Morrissey This is my first time listening to a Morrissey solo album and I think I'll stick to his stuff with the Smiths. I could not stop cringing at the lyrics of these songs. Even just the song titles are cringe. Initially I was ready to give this album a lower rating but to my surprise the second half of this album was actually pretty good. Not good enough to save it but "First of the Gang to Die" is half way decent and "I Like You" is actually really catchy. In conclusion, I am cautiously curious about the rest of Morrissey's discography. Favorite track: I Like You
British nightingale
Only did one listen but lyrics have aged well over all for being so blatantly political. Neat sounds but not really for me.
Terrible
heikomman puoleinen albumi morrisseylta
Listenable. I enjoyed most of the tracks. He was not known to be before.
Just not my thing
Musically inoffensive, but lyrically insufferable.
Wow, that was a really great open mike. Second half is better than the first. But dude's got problems.
Maybe I'm not British enough to get this one....
..
It was OK. 2/5
A mixed bag of an album. Morrissey’s voice is not in top form. About half the songs are good. The other half are uninspired, some times he actually sounds bored.
i really disliked this
How can I love The Smiths so much yet have to grit my teeth through this? There's something so hollow about his solo work. I won't be revisiting this.
This shouldn’t be here. He did better. He’s a gobshite, but he can turn the odd lyric and tune. But there are better Morrissey albums.
Morrissey's voice has a very unpleasant effect on me.* If he warbled "I love you, I love you, I love you" to me in person, I'm fairly confident I would vomit. Unlike with the Smiths there isn't Johnny Marr's great guitar playing to balance that out. On top of that, the lyrics on this album are so self pitying. No one understands me, it's so difficult being me, no one likes me...Bog off, Morrissey! *For the record, his face makes me want to punch him too, but I'm not factoring that into my review as it doesn't impact his music.
Smiths = Yes, Morrissey = No.
I thought I liked Morrissey tbh, but this album is music for stupid people who think they've got it all figured out. The music is mostly uninspired and the lyrics are so cringey sometimes I can't tell if it's ironic There were a couple tracks I liked (First of the Gang to Die, I Like You)
Not terrible but all the songs really blend together. The way he sings also got tiresome. Won't be back.
It's such a disappointment to listen to Morrissey solo albums. The lyrics are still usually above par but the music is so pedestrian.
Insufferable pretentious boredom-inducing dogshit. Godawful lyrics. Garbage human being.
This wasn't bad, but it was just too soft for my tastes. Next.
flowing melodies, Smiths-style settings, one BIG TUNE in The First Of The Gang To Die, and lashings of self-pity.
The Good: Nothing really… The Bad: Everything, really… The Ugly: I found out I did not hate it… Current tally: The Smiths albums heard on the list = 1 Morrissey albums head on the list = 2 (included this one) I dread the next one I need to listen to… as I really can’t stand Morrissey’s voice… I am the quarry, of coal… stinking, rough coal… with no outlook of becoming a diamond… But I did not want to slice my wrists while listening to this, so I will be gentle and allow for a 2* rating
2/5
Kind of heavy handed
I have little interest in Morrisey or time for his public utterances, and haven't followed his post-Smiths career with much interest. This album is perfectly fine music wise and there are one or two witty lyrics. However the overall mood is one of lachrymose self-pity and is rather morbid in places. I doubt I will listen to any of his other solo work
¿Por qué hay tantos putos álbums de Morrissey en esta lista? Como siempre, bastante aburrido. No es su peor pero tampoco es decir mucho. Canción destacada: Let Me Kiss You
I did not know him. Surely he has something to say. But what is it? Drastic words with average pop music. I don't understand him, I don't need this. 2.
You've gotta be fucking kidding me. Time-Between-Morrissey™ has reached an all time low -- 2 days. Well here we go listening to this man wank for 45 minutes. America is Not the World, while snore inducing in delivery (Morrissey bores me), is fairly timely in its subject matter: "where the President is never Black, Female, or Gay, and until that day, you've got nothing to say to me." Production is solid, however. The skittering synths wandering about with the astral vocal chorus underpinning it, gives this a psychedelic vibe that actually doesn't stray far from the Flaming Lips that I was just listening to. Credit where it is due. I can't get down with I Have Forgiven Jesus. Classic Morrissey wank-track. First of the Gang to Die is fucking terrible; how is this the most listened to song on the record? If I'm being objective, this isn't a terrible album. The production is quality at times and some of the songs are actually decent. But this, like many other Morrissey albums suffers from the same "I can't wait for this to be done" feeling. Something in his voice is fine for a track or two, but grows so tiring. I'm honestly not even sure why. Its not bad, it just all falls in the same space and becomes uninteresting. So with that in mind, I'm giving this a 2.
Looked back and the two other Morrissey albums I started with saying they were boring. The trend continues. 2.5 stars.
Just going to give this a 2 because I am sick of all of the Morrissey. Can't tell the difference between any of his albums
We need Lessissey of this man. First song just bashing the US talking about hamburgers and shit. Can only laugh at the pretentiousness. Actually kinda grooving to I'm Not Sorry. The rest is just meh for me.
The watershed moment when Morrissey went from Introspective Insecure Caring Morrissey to Irrationally Angry Blobby Morrissey.
Very generic Morrissey. Dated lyrics..
Gun
eh nothing really stands out about the album
I find Morrissey pretentious and boring. This album is really no different. The lyrics are cringe-on-the-nose at times. His style of singing is really not for me. I have to admit that "First of The Gang to Die" is a catchy song that nearly makes me forget how much I don't like Morrissey.
Morrissey and Marr had some sort of alchemy together that neither has been able to conjure up since. And what happened to his morbid sense of humour? He seems to have lost it somewhere along the way. And the music is pretty dull to me. Want to give this a 2.5. Kind of torn…
Ugh. Fuck Morrissey but also Irish Blood, English Heart is so good. So you get an extra star.
screw morrissey
I definitely didn’t need to hear that before I died. A few good tunes I guess. Best song: I Like You
If was fine, I guess, if you like that kind of thing. Unmemorable.
Definitely weaker than his previous efforts that we've had - musically, it's far more generic than the other albums of his that we've had. If you took his vocals off this, it could easily be a David Gray or a Dido album, and that takes a lot away. Plus, the lyrics on this in places are pompous beyond belief - 'I have forgiven you, Jesus'. Will avoid the temptation of focusing on 'The World Is Full Of Crushing Bores', and simply give this a 2/5.
This album was so annoying.
On his best day, I'm half a Morrissey fan, half a hater, and this album wasn't made on his best day.
I liked Morrissey’s early solo work but stopped listening to him in the mid 90s when the racist/nationalistic bullshit came to light. This album doesn’t do anything to win me back.
Meh. Not very exciting or interesting.
If you ever think your poetry is shit remember there's this 45 years old guy rhyming hamburger with hamburger. Best track: Irish Blood, English Heart
No one deserves to have their whole catalog on this list, least of all His Mopiness.
Really didn't need 3 albums by this guy. Oh jeez just checked and he has 4 solo albums on this list + 3 with the Smiths. His voice is fine and the music is ok I guess but it falls flat a bit for me like it's kind of bland.
Who fucking cares, man. Morrissey's sixth album released almost twenty years after his prime. Just a complete waste of time. "You Are The Quarry"? Doesn't even mean anything. I'm simply not the quarry.
I tried. I really did. I tried not to let my thoughts on Morrissey as a person overly impact my thoughts on the work. 'Coz while that sort of thing is unavoidable, I don't wanna fall into rating the person and not the music. I mean, if I can give a Kanye West album a 4 despite hating him as much as I do, then anything's possible. But we all have our limits — especially if the music itself can't make up for the awful human being at the center of it. Just look at Koffi Olomide, for instance. The samba music he made was so boring and "commercial for a Caribbean cruise line" grade, I felt no guilt ripping into him for being a convicted sexual predator. Similar goes for Kid Rock, the poser and grifter he is. And what's funny about all that is that I actually like a fair bit of the music on here. Like, I gave the last Morrissey album my group got a 3 'coz it was all, like, chill, atmospheric New Wave, and I liked it, but in the months since then, I'unno how much I'm clamoring to hear it again. Versus this album, which is full of energy and a nice bit of pop. If anyone else was singing anything else over this, I'd be close to giving this a 4 or, heck, a 5. I like it just that much. But I'll repeat: "if anyone else was singing anything else." I made the mistake of actually following along with the lyrics this time, and... Oh my fuckin' goodness, I can't stand this fuckin' man. Shut your fuckin' mouth, you pretentious ass. I can't even really begin to describe it, but I've just never had lyrics get under my skin as badly as this. Jus', this pompous fuckin' dick wants to lecture **me** about how America sucks? Buddy, in 2024, I know that already — and like I'd want **you** to tell me anyway. That, and the shit like "Wahhh-wahhh, I'm so alone" and "Ohhhh, no one can understand how **I** feel" and "Everyone **else** is just **so boring**" and "the press wuz mean 2 me :(." I don't need this shitheel's whining or pseudo-intellectual musings about the state of the world. Seriously, he's lucky I like the actual instrumentals as much as I do, 'coz that's literally the only reason why this thing's getting a 2 and not a 1. Muh'fucker this he's so fuckin' cool, posing on the album cover with a tommygun. He's a fuckwit is what he is, and he doesn't deserve instrumentals like these. If "First Of The Gang To Die", the only song I liked here, could've been sung by anyone else...! I don't even know if I want the one last Morrissey album on this list to show up soon so I can give it over with or later so I don't hafta deal with him again for a while. Either way, besides any Smiths album my group gets, I'll be happy to never have to deal with him again. Goodness me, I can't even...
Morrisey over represented in the 1001, but at least one album deserves a spot. Not sure if this is the one though. And he is a shit bloke, so loses a star.
2 - Wow. The lyrics, just...wow. It's like it was written by a 16 year old gcse student trying to be deep, or maybe he was trying to impress and 16 year old gcse student
Nah, we've probably already got too many Smiths albums on here. Just no need for this. 2/5
For all sorts of reasons, Viva Hate is the only Morrissey album anyone really need pay attention to. Perhaps Bona Drag too, but that’s a bit of a toss up. There isn’t anything bad, per se, about this. But there isn’t anything good either. The aural equivalent of Lorem ipsum, I suppose - but with nothing more substantial ever replacing it. To be clear: the music is ok, the lyrics are pedestrian. We expect much more of SPM. (An aside. After one of his more intemperate outbursts, someone pointed out that if you allow yourself to disappointed by Morrissey, that’s entirely on you. Harsh but probably correct.)
Ah, the inevitable problem of the British Indie Fan's issue with listening to Morrissey. Is he a daft racist? YES. Is he hanging on by the skin of his teeth because of past glories? YES. Does this album deserve to be in this list because it was his "comeback" album? NO. Listen to The Smiths or Viva Hate; Your Arsenal or Vauxhall & I if you want solo Morrissey. Don't give him anymore time. Pointless addition. Best Tracks: Irish Blood English Heart; The World is Full of Crashing Bores; The First of the Gand to Die
The music is pleasant to hear. The lyrics have accessibility and individually each song isn’t bad on its own, but as an album run it blurred together for me. I used to find the cynicism entangled with romanticism charming but then I heard more than 3 songs he ever wrote and that wore off. If he wasn’t so convinced that his is the pinnacle of existential dread, then maybe he could rely on subtlety or variety more, but almost every song has at least one line about how he’s smarter or lonelier or deeper than everyone else. Even his love song is about how his lover thinks the same as him. Even when he values another’s opinion it’s because it’s the same as his. Morrissey could read his own diary in a double-blind experiment and still be convinced that no one has ever felt the way he does. And then he’d write 3 songs about it. Idk how to rate it but I give it a 2.
Morrissey im afraid they could never make me like you
The fuck
It's Morrissey.
Not my thing. It's probably not bad but it'll be a grind to finish. I don't hate it but I don't like it. First of the gang to die is decent.
Another fine example of their being far too just Morrissey on this list. The Smiths albums and maybe one solo album would have been plenty thank you.
I don't understand why Morrissey is a thing. This is okay, sounds very much like the Brit rock that it is, but nothing special.
There's some real musicianship here, but I feel the condescension in every one of his songs. Lyrically, I feel like Morrissey is slapping my face with a wet rubber chicken.
No…more…Morrissey….
He's a good singer and the music is fine but a bit boring. I enjoyed it more on my first listen when I wasn't paying attention to what he was saying. Overall this is listenable but not something I want to come back to.
A lot of these songs seem closer to parody than actual music. Unambiguous lyrics can be effective, but this feels like getting punched in the face by a pretentious, egotistical simpleton who prefers the company of his own reflection. (Woe is him, no one could possibly understand.) Somehow the boring, incohesive melodies make the lyrics sound even worse. Sorry, dude, Jesus does not need your forgiveness. The stars are for the other guys in the band.
Morrissey tends to drone on a bit for me....
This album makes me feel unenviably like Morrissey’s therapist. Oddly enough, there was something catchy about it.
The lyrics feel like they are the result of asking an AI to write Morrissey lyrics
Morrissey doesn't do subtlety
I feel like morrissey albums are capped at average..
Now, so I was in a cab on a Sunday night going from Waterloo to Hackney, and suddenly the cab driver turned around and his opening conversation or gambit was to say this genuine sentence. He said, "These days you get arrested and thrown in jail if you say you're English, don't you?" LAUGHTER Look, we've all done it. You're probably like me. Sometimes a cab driver or someone might say something like that and you go, "Yeah." You know, just for a quiet life. Or if they go, "My face is made out of electricity and ham," and you go, "Yes, it's awful when that happens. "My friend had that. An electric ham face." Or if they go, "All mice are gay and they're from space, aren't they?" You go, "Yeah, the bloody gay space mice. I can't stand them. They make me physically sick." You're just, you know, for a quiet life. But on this occasion I thought, "I wonder what he means?" I said to him, "What did you say?" And he said, "Oh, these days, "if you say you're English you get arrested and thrown in jail." I said, "When did this come in?" And he said, "No," he said, "if you say you're English these days, mate. "You get arrested and thrown in jail." I said, "Are you...? "What, if you say, just if you say you're English you get arrested and thrown in jail?" He goes, "Yeah. These days," he said, "if you say you're English you get arrested and you'll be, you'll be just thrown in jail." I said "In, in, jail." He goes, "Yeah, these days. These days, mate, if you say you're English, right, these days, you'll get arrested and you'll be thrown in jail." "I said, "You'll be thrown...? Actually thrown in jail, just if you, if you say you're English." He goes, "Yeah, these days. Say you're English these days, you'll get, you'll be thrown in, arrested, and then you'll be thrown in jail." I said, "You'd be actually be thrown in jail?" He goes, "Yeah." I said, "Just for saying you're English?" He goes, "Yeah," he said, "say you're English these days. You get arrested and you'll be, you'd be thrown in jail." I said, "Thrown in, you'll be thrown in jail if you just say, just for saying you're Eng...?" He goes, Yes, you will." "These days," he said, "if you say you're English "you'll be arrested and you'll be thrown..." I said, "Absolutely, are you saying, what are you saying? "If you say you're English these days, you'll be arrested and thrown in jail?" He goes, "Yes, these days, if you say you're English, you just say that, and you'll be arrested and you'll be thrown in jail." I said, "Thrown in, you'll be thrown in a jail? "Just if you, and arrested, just if you say..." He goes, "Yeah, you'll be arrested, then thrown in jail just for saying you're English." I said, "Just for saying you're English you'll be arrested?" He goes, "Yeah." I said, "Are you cer..." I said, "Are you sure? "Will you be arrested and thrown in jail these days if you say you're English?" And he said, "No." LAUGHTER Right. I'd worn him down, "But..." he said, "but.." he said, "if on an official form where it says 'nationality' you cross out British and you write in 'White English' they will send that form back." Now, that's not strict... It's not the same as being arrested, is it? But it is a very thin line, to be fair. It is. Earlier this year I was applying for a new passport and on my passport photo, before I sent it in, on my face, in pen, I wrote, "There ain't no black in the Union Jack." Stupid load of fuss. I was banged up. Anyway, Morrissey. This was a reasonably enjoyable album at the time but First of the Gang was overplayed. Irish Blood English Heart was a decent tune, now it's bitterly ironic. And still a decent tune. It's not a great album 20 years later regardless of the man himself. Needless inclusion, and warranted book removal.
Oh great, more morrissey, just what we needed.
How many more Morrissey albums could there be? This one's on the lower end for me, but "America Is Not The World" was really funny, so much indignation and disgust, you can hear it in the way he says "burger." Funny that Obama was elected two years later, and ultimately Morrissey became the racist. Album is okay at best, but we've had enough Morrissey that this wasn't necessary. Favorite tracks: America is Not the World, I'm Not Sorry. Album art: I quite like this one, one of his better covers for sure. Morrissey posing with a tommy gun. This actually looks a bit like the picture you'd see on the front of a packaged Halloween costume for "disinterested mobster." 2.5/5
Sure, I guess. Not anything I would come back to, but it's fine.
Self-righteous, pompous, trite, unapologetic (literally) and fairly bland. Come listen to Morrissey spend 47 minutes and 20 seconds berate you about how he's so much better than you are or ever will be. Most of the songs are repetitive and drab with very few exceptions. "Irish Blood, English Heart" slaps tho.
I was unaware that this ring of hell exists. Early 2000's Morrissey? No thank you.
Really disappointing from the ex Smiths leader.
Some good songs but very repetitive
This music isn't fun anymore. The usual self indulgent woe is me lyrics which don't age well. Everyone's fault but mine sort of thing. Musically some of Morrissey's better work. But the lyrics are off-putting.
Ok. Political
Has Morrissey blackmailed the list owner or something? Fourth Morrissey album not and I'm not even half way through. That's twice as many Smiths albums as I've gotten so far. Wtf. Anyway, another mediocre Morrissey album, proving Johnny Marr was the not-so-secret to his success. He just comes across more like a bell end the older he got. 2.5*, nothing really catchy on here
Dull
Morrissey became famous as the lead singer of the Smiths, and his distinct, deep voice was the central, defining element of the band's sound. The band was also known for angst-ridden, melodramatic lyrics, and Morrissey continued in this vein through his solo career. You are the Quarry is his seventh solo album. It was released seven years his previous, and was more successful than his previous few releases. As such, it was regarding as something of a comeback. Morrisey makes pop songs that wander toward music theater; his heavy-handed melodrama is overbearing. He has one of the stronger male voices in pop music, but with songs like "How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel," with lines like "I've had my face dragged in fifty miles of shit, and I do not like it," Morrissey is hard to take seriously.
Nah
This is the worst Morrissey album on here so far.
This was fine but I think I expected more from Morrissey. His voice and esp the lyrics kind of rubbed me the wrong way on this listen.
Sleepy. Metacritic reports an average review score of 72/100 based on 31 critical reviews (stat from Wikipedia). That answers my question "oh, what warrants a fourth Morrissey album on this list?" No good reason found. The music was fine. Morrisey didn't have anything to say here that I was interested in.
Might have been a 3 but holy shit are these lyrics sophomoric.
Was okay, but nothing really stood out.
This is by far the best Morrissey album I've ever heard. 2 stars
Not my style.
He just sounds like a dickhead. With that being said, its catchy music.
Not really my style of music. Same type of expression throughout album.
Fuckin Morrissey. I like a lot of the musical elements here, but the lyrics are pretentious and the guy himself is a tool. If this album were by someone else I’d think it’s great. But it wasn’t 😩
This guy thinks he can forgive Jesus
Are there really only 3 good songs in here. First off yeah whatever morrissey sucks. I like the smiths and one solo morrissey song. I think this is not that great it just feels so forgetable and the subject matter is meh. I like you, First of the gang to die and I have forgiven jesus the rest just feels filler meh. Maybe next time.
Very moody and melancholy. Not really for me.
When this album first came out, I was a big fan of it. The singles that came off it were a pleasant surprise on the radio and the full album had some great songs while some of the lesser songs on the album didn't bother me that much. And this was a deserved return for Morrissey in the spotlight. Over time this view has changed a bit. Where older albums like "Vauxhall and I" and newer ones like "I Am Not a Dog on a Chain" are still feeling fresh, I never reach for this album anymore. And re-listening to it over the last day I think it was indeed one of the last times this album would've played on my stereo, with the exception of one or two songs.
Oh god do I really have to listen to morrissey, one of the most insufferable people around? This may be a good album but the whole time I’m listening I cant remove the morrissey from the equation. 5/10
The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores.... Morrissey is one of them.
Pseudo-political whining over mid pop-rock. Do we really need to hear 4 damn solo albums from this guy before we die?
You can tell just how unpopular America and the Iraq War were in 2004 because even Morrissey was getting praise for landing hits on us.
this album is painfully bad. there are two good songs but the rest are a genuine chore to get through.. this is one of those albums that absolutely would not have made the list if it was made by someone less famous
Hørte ikke hele men var ganske deprimerende
I like Morrisey as a singer not a person. But why this album is one to listen too, who knows? Especially given his first two have Stephen Street.
Insipid
I don't like Morrisey. As well as not liking him, I'm not a fan of his lyrics or his vocal approach. That said, everything else on this album is decent. The songs are well constructed, his voice is good and charasmatic, and the production is great. Will I choose to listen again though? Nope.
More bloody Morrissey, urgh!
The music is okay, lyrics are interesting. Overall not that good. Apparently he's mega racist and an "extreme vegan" which is unfortunate. Favourites: Irish blood English heart, come back to Camden, let me kiss you. 2/5
Completely forgotten in 2024. I remember when everyone was falling over themselves to praise this though
Irish Blood, English Heart and First of the Gang to Die are good songs. The rest? No.
Hmmm...not awful but also wanted him to stop.
Yikes that was ahhh not a good time. Sshhhh shh shh shhh
The music is actually rather engaging. There's a richness of the music that really elevates everything, but Morrissey is so smug in his lyrics and songwriting that it ruins it all. Even the better songs on this album are hindered by his insufferability.
Not his best work.
I just don’t get it. I commend Morrissey for putting his art out there but this album is too on the nose lyrically.
- kinda operatic with his voice - probably deep but it wasn’t resonating with me
Didn't enjoy the lyrics to "America is Not the World" and "I Have Forgiven Jesus".
Fine background music, nothing groundbreaking
I enjoy his voice and sound, but he hasn't aged gracefully. From those angsty teen heartache songs from his hay day, now it just sounds vapid and whiny. I wanted to like this one. The wiki said there were 4 singles that charted on the album. I couldn't figure out which they were, none seemed chart worthy in my book.
Really liked a majority of the songs but others were genuinely difficult to sit through Favourite: First of the Gang to Die
You know, I should like this. I like oddball lyrics, irreverent humor, and a more sombre soundscape. But Morrissey comes at it with such an eyeroll ironic attitude and aggressive britishness that it really put me off. It was like getting stabbed by a british hoodlum with a top hat on while reciting slam poerty. First of the gang to die kinda saved it though from being a 1 for me
The first song was pretty dumb and the rest didn’t spark joy. Lower than meh for me.
Whiny. I get that people think he’s so important to their growing up. But I just waited for the album to be over.
I like a lot of The Smith's music, but there's something about Morrissey's voice that just annoys the crap out of me. Also a British person making a song called "America is not the world" is just incredibly ripe.
This is just Old Man Yells at Cloud: The Album. 2/5
I love The Smiths and some of Morrissey's work is fine too, but I can't get into many of his solo stuff. The production of this album is good, and it's not an offending sounding album, but it is boring musically. Overall there is not much joy to listen to it.
though it has some good songs it has anything you can call Morrissey annoying for in it
Oh boy, a controversial figure's album! This'll be fun. I've never listened to anything by The Smiths or Morrissey, so I'm going in with fresh ears. HOWEVER, I can't say the well isn't already poisoned by the internet's hatred for this guy. Keep that in mind while reading this. Off the rip this album comes off as whiny and pretentious. I can feel the attitude through Morrissey's singing. Singing I don't really care for. Personally, I didn't enjoy this album. 4/10 Would I listen again? No
I am very committed to this game. And when you are, some time you need to listen to albums when you really don't feel like it. That's an example. But... it's not bad. Something about Morrissey's lyrics feels so ridiculous at times without the genius of the music and arrangements of the Smiths. But,, it is listenable. 2.5, maybe?
Zzzzzzzz. What? Morrissey? Right, I forgot. Zzzzzz.
first listen. ive been refusing to listen to Morrissey's solo music for like 10 years now and apparently I was right to do so. Cant believe how cringe the lyrics are. This album in general is so much worse than i expected it to be and i already expected it to be bad. It got better in the second half but after that beginning it was really hard to get into it.
A couple of good tunes.
The Album is Fill of Morrissey's Crashing Ego. 2/5
He's got a nice singing voice. Too bad he's such a 'smashing bore.' Artless politics talk right at the head of the album sounding like it could have been some teenager's twitter feed.
Still hate Morrissey. There are a few tracks that rise above the rest, but overall just a bitchy album.
Interesting sound but never found any joy in his music
The Smiths this is not. There are moments where the old magic shines through, but it's not consistent across the run time. "First of the Gang to Die" is pretty solid, but not much else stood out to me.
Not a fan of this one.
I encourage artists to tackle big issues in their work but this was preachy as fuck in the worst, most pretentious way Jesus Christ. Really comes across as the product of morrisseys massive ego thinking he’s the most prescient human being who ever lived. Not only that, but there wasn’t a memorable song for me on the entire thing. It never sounded bad production wise but nothing ever outshone the annoyjng faux-intellectual lyrics.
Is Morrissey threatening to hunt me? I’ll not be your quarry, sir. He may be a douche and debatably a bit of a racist, but he’s an anti-hunting animal rights activist. But hunting people is ok? (Oh, and speaking of debatably racist - he’s become rather anti-immigrant, but his parents immigrated from Ireland to England. Ah, but of course he’s only anti-immigrant depending on where the immigrants are coming from, huh?) My recent fixation on the Mercury Prize takes an interesting turn here. Because amidst all these other nominees and winners we’ve listened to recently, Morrissey’s “You Are The Quarry” actually was not nominated. And it hasn’t remained on the 1001 either. Its inclusion from the start seems a mistake, helped along by an overfondness for The Smiths and early Morrissey solo work. The worst is right at the start. “America Is Not The World.” The sheer irony of an Englishman telling another country that “I just wish you'd stay where you belong.” At least he seems to have no more love for his native country though on “Irish Blood, English Heart.” That song is one of the most palatable on an otherwise irritating album. Most of the time, I can’t stand the way Morrissey uses his voice. But occasionally he tones it down and pairs it with music that fits well, and “Irish Blood, English Heart” was one of those rare examples. Nothing else on “You Are The Quarry” struck me though. Sorry, Morrissey, your hunt failed to capture me.
I can't with these lyrics. I actually enjoy Morrissey's voice, I just wish he used it to say something that didn't make roll my eyes.
Still a know-it-all that has a mediocre voice.
Not my style of music I would say but it was a very interesting album to listen to. Favorite song: First of the Gang to Die
Maybe 15-20 years ago I would rank this higher. Knowing now what a bag of feces Morrissey is, his songwriting doesn’t do much for me anymore. And if this were a Smiths album, with Johnny Marr’s guitar cutting through the other crap, I might rank it higher. But the music here is pretty boring. Go away, Morrissey. No one needs you.
Boy, was I not excited to listened to this. It started out that I might actually at least be OK with it, and there were one or two or three songs I liked throughout. But, overall, what a mediocre album by an awful person.
Hörte das Album zum Release und war damals nicht so begeistert. Heute ist's okay. Ich mag The Smiths lieber.
These songs are so boring
Musically speaking, I absolutely adore The Smiths, but this was such a disappointment. It totally lacked the ✨pizzazz✨ that The Smiths flawlessly displays. That said, it wasn't BAD. The lyrics really were try-hard, though. However, Morrissey himself is a total douche, so I'm giving this a 2
his whiny voice annoys me and doesn't fit with the try hard lyrics
Maybe this suffers from being the third Morrissey solo album on the list. I'm done with it.
Yawn
Full of catchy hooks but somehow dull and dreary at the same time. There are definitely some outlier tracks that shine through but mostly this is pretty bland. I first listened to this album when I was an angsty, straight edge, vegetarian teen and I couldn’t even really get into it then. Not much has changed except now I find Morrissey’s pretentious, unsubtle tones a lot more wearing. Highlights: English Blood, Irish Heart, First of the Gang to Die
A couple tunes were sort of ok. Wouldn't care to listen to this again.
2.5 Not a fan of Morrissey. This album has its ok moments though.
Too whiny for me but I didn’t hate it.
This guy is annoying
Tandon Scale Rating: 2 Standouts: Irish Blood, English Heart, First of the Gang to Die Foot Notes: 1 Some of his lyrics are really corny 2 the Brits must love this guy Would I Listen Again: no for me dawg Album Cover Rating: (1-5) 2 Album Name Rating: (1-5) 2
It's like 80s music but also early 2000s music. I have not been a fan of other Morrissey albums I've listened to, and this one is no exception. It sounds pretty dated.
lyrics are absolutely awful and whiney, pack it in son. the music itself is good but my god dude stop whining.
I didn't dislike this as much as Alex, but what he says is hard to refute. I was a latecomer to The Smiths and I've grown to like a lot of that. But listenting to this... the magic is gone.
What a peculiar and unpleasant album. Music is nondescript, production is crap (Morrissey himself sounds quite over-miked) and overall I'm left with the impression I've spent 45 minutes in the head of a weird, vaguely misanthropic person. The latter point wouldn't be so bad if it was done with any degree of elan or finesse. Sadly this is a documentary of a waning power, so the album just sounds like a man, bitter and out of time, shouting at clouds.
Really wanted to give this 1 star, but there were too many bright moments in an otherwise bland album. 2/5
Suck fest.
Funniest most pathetic album i’ve ever heard
Not a fan.
Meh...
Mitäänsanomaton. Ei kuitenkaan paska
If this was in instrumental album, I would probably listen to it a lot more. But I feel like the writing present here is just something I do not want to hear again
Wat is er gebeurd met die prachtige teksten van Morrissey? Heb me echt dood zitten ergeren aan die bagger die hij ineens uitkraamt, terwijl ie zo briljant was bij The Smiths.
This is the 4th Morrissey album on this list. That's unnecessary as none of them are that good. It was marginally better than some of the others. Still no need to listen.
...had to be there, I guess. Think there's only one more of this guy on the list, but he's had frankly too many opportunities on this thing to win me over for how boring each of these has been. I might need somebody to explain patiently to me what the appeal is here, because everything I've osmosed just seems to point at inside baseball stuff around the particular scene he's involved in?
At least with some of the other Morrisey LPs, they started off with real rockers, but this one starts off bland and stays that way. I’ll give a bonus point for the lyrics that are so bad they’re good.
One of my esteemed colleagues said that Morrissey was the pioneer of "Whine Rock", so apt. Reading the reviews here is also quite funny, there's so much hate for this tosser that I almost feel sorry for him. This album is actually not too bad and it may have gotten an extra point from me if it had been purely instrumental without his whiney voice.
I've never been embarrassed for an album before. Hackneyed, trite and as forgettable as The Smiths were quotable.
Oh, grow up already. And the lyrics don't even fit the rhythm properly.
Blind album, know the artist by name. I only really like 1 track from this album and the rest was okay in my mind. Nothing notable, maybe if I listened to lyrics more it may be better but I prefer the instrumentals.
Pretty much hated that but not quite torture.
It’s not a bad album but you have to enjoy Morissey tone and flow. Kinda bland and generic. Morissey whines and is trying to sound intellectual but fails often. Also he is a racist idiot. 2 stars
Post-Smiths Morrissey slightly gets over from Lockjaw in the mid 90’s only to really show how much of a massive racist he is in the early 2000’s.
Meh
A moving melancholic lament that repeats itself 12 times over 47 minutes and enters the realm of self indulgence
I like: Irish Blood, English Heart
Not for me
I always want to try really hard to approach a Morrissey album with fresh opinions. I want to say something more substantive than "Jesus Christ, what a fucking wanker" But here we are. Jesus Christ, what a wanker! (Happy 1,001, Tom)
Moerisey's lyrics are laughable in parts. He comes across as a bitter petty man without much to say. The music is just mediocre.
Really bland, don't really see anything to keep me listening or any original ideas whatsoever. (38%)
God this guy is a prick. Also don't like The Smiths. Trying to be deep and smart but sounds like an idiot.
Why not to go solo. The Smiths were brilliant because of the contrasting feeling between the music and vocals. His nihilistic emotion seems less tongue in cheek without Marrs melodies. More serious, like he means it, truly. Regardless of how good and clever they are, the words just don't hit the same. Ends up middle of the road more times than not. 2.5/5
Full of all the snide, sniveling complaining I’d expect from Morrissey. Dude was whining about cancel culture decades ahead of anyone else. Only managed to incentivize myself to finish this one by reading the amazing hate fest of a comments section, giving this LP two stars for giving me some good laughs and the sheer audacity of the things this man has to complain about
Whew. Opening with capital Opinions on America and Forgiving Jesus soured me to this one pretty hard. Kudos to Morrissey, though: His musicality keeps things from sliding all the way into Melodrama. The sonar beep on I'm Not Sorry is even pretty interesting. Great cover, too. But Moz: Still not for me.
I'm sorry Morrissey. I just don't care. Every time I hear you, I just think about how middling The Smiths would have been without Johnny Marr. It was a big hurdle for me to get to the point that I liked the Smiths. Then, I even learned to like them BECAUSE of your voice and lyrics (never thought that would happen). I need more time to be interested in your solo work (and you need to find a better guitarist to replace Marr). Better yet, make amends with Johnny and get the band back together.
I liked this when it first came out. Even bought it. Nice tunes and some interesting lyrics. Just not enough to make me want a repeat listen.
Tried hard to like this album....but just couldnt.
Meh, just not a morrisey fan
Couldn’t finish it. Morrissey went way overboard on sounding pretentious and entitled and it’s not a good look. The production is stellar, I’ll give him that.
Neet mien tas thee
Naja
Ew, just could not get into this one. Listened to the first few tracks, skipped through the rest. Sorry.
Not my vibe at all tbh
Meh. He's got a lovely voice, and writes heartfelt lyrics, but the sound is just boring to me!
false
I like the Smiths but can’t get into this. - Pete
Tired of Morrisey at this point in his career. Tired of "comeback" albums on this list as well. This doesn't resonate for me emotionally. I feel like his lyrics have become less refined and more clumsy on this. Production is too clean and verging into corny territory at times. It's also got one of the lamest album covers I've ever seen.
Musically great, could be a great album with a different frontman. Lyrically sounds like it was written by a 14 year old. Probably a 4/5 if it was an instrumental album.
So British. I particularly enjoyed that most of the songs were under 4 minutes. Didn't hate it, but not my cup of tea.
Morrissey; the icing on Johnny marrs cake. Unfortunately if you take away the cake, you’ve got a lump of inedible icing. Just dull!
America Is Not The World sounds like it's been written by a 14-year-old. Irish Blood, English Heart and I Have Forgiven Jesus are both similarly teenage contrarian, and all these are just Morrissey complaining. The lyrics, to me, seem to be all surface level, very little subtlety or depth. I also find it laughable that the album ends with a song where Morrissey complains about music critics. This is from 2004, what the hell!? Morrissey is absolutely not that important or relevant. Another baffling inclusion for this list, especially considering that there are at least 3 Smiths albums and another Morrissey solo album on here.
🤮 again?!?!?
This guy does not stop whinging
I surprisingly enjoyed Vauxhall and I despite my dislike of Morrissey's vocals, his personality and his politics. You are The Quarry is less charming and more overtly whinny and you can see the beginnings of shift rightwards. Did not enjoy.
No Morrisey
Overall Rating - 1.20/5 (2.42/10). Full of self-indulgent, hypocritical, whiny navel-gazing. An unpleasant album by a garbage human. I really had to follow Jimi Hendrix with THIS?
fuck me this cunt knows how to complain fr
Meh, Morrissey just falls short for me.
Morrissey has always been a bitter heart and his ability to create an emotional bond while expressing his nearly Nietzschean ressentiment was one of his greatest strengths from early on. And while this part of his artistry seems foundational, You Are The Quarry marks a turn. I can appreciate Moz putting America in its place (in song at least) and his desire to articulate a sense of self that is unashamed. But I think it's plain that the success of this comeback album has encouraged him to engage in more divisive politics over time. The step from identity to nationalism is not a great leap. And, while I try to resist letting the author's life into a reading of a work — this album is so very personal — now that he's become aggressive and anxious in ways he cannot contain, it's ultimately this record that's the most noxious of his (but perhaps only because Bonfire of Teenagers currently remains unreleased).
No thanks.
Minus 2 for attitude and opinions.
I'm a big fan of separating the art from the artist, even if I struggle occasionally. The Smiths were fine, some great albums there, but I think everyone knows that this was mostly down to Marr, especially with what both have done since. Steve is quite obviously and blatantly a fucking idiot, and it's very hard to try and move away from this, and he almost gets there half way through the album. However, this album is mid-tempo mojo magazine dad rock that fades into nothingness, just as I wish he would.
The world would be better if music made by fascists always sounded bad.
I so disliked the first few songs, there was no coming back from the hamburger line... I have no issue with political songs, but at least be smart with your lyrics.
Didn't like at all.
I couldn't finish it. He sounds like a parody of himself
Couldn’t finish
Aw poor Morrissey!? STFU. He has interesting melodies and a nice voice but he might be, as the English say, a “twat” The Irish Blood song sounds like a Killers ripoff, fun fact this album was released on the same day as hot fuss.
Kinda like the smiths? But worse
1s for fash.
I prefer The Smiths’s music over his solo projects, but this isn’t too bad. Fav song is ‘I Have Forgiven Jesus’.
Surprised this is in the top 1000000
I say no to Morrissey
Jesus Christ this guy is worse than Bono. You could not come up with a more condescending album. It tries to act like it’s insanely profound while lobbing the most low hanging fruit critiques on society. This is like angsty eighth grade English assignment shit. I am younger so I really liked all the Smiths albums on this list but couldn’t understand why Morrissey kept getting so much hate in the reviews but it all makes sense now. I am ready to join the legion. Fuck Morrissey.
What an obnoxious record. I hope his stupid Tommy gun that he’s not holding properly kicks back and smashes his stupid face. Also, the UK still has not had a black prime minister, and the only female PM at the time Morrissey wrote this was Margaret Thatcher, so your whiny little British mouth can stay shut about America, thank you very much
Paul needed John Freddie needed Queen Morrisey needs Johnny Its the creative tension that makes greatness Otherwise its not worth my time listening to
No thanks…the Warlock Pinchers sing a song about Morrissey. Even though I don’t like him, he has way better albums than this.
What is it about one musician over another that makes their music seem pretentious? Same 8 notes in a scale . . . I just don't want to like him.
I’ve lamented albums from this list because of their difficult to understand lyrics. I’m lamenting this album because of how clear the lyrics are. Wish I could unhear. Weapons grade pretension and self-absorption. 0 stars.
Voice is like nails across a chalkboard
It’s ok
I listened to half of this and then quit. No thanks!
I fucking hate Morrissey. Track 1 being a critique of the US while he’s from the UK a country equally culpable of crimes including the Iraq war which was happening at the same time. The next song…kinda addresses this? By being like damn the British really fucked the Irish. But it’s all personal because Morrissey has no self awareness. This album feels like a parody of himself. It’s lazy and slow and boring.
I do remember the single, but I cannot get through this one.
The album wasn’t as bad as I expected; technically and musically it’s well-done. But Morrissey’s voice and lyrics don’t connect in any way with me. It’s not something I will listen to again.
Morrissey is such a cunt
I like Morrissey but this is not his best
If I wanted to be preached to, I'd go to church. Piss off, Morrissey, you smug bastard.
Pre listen. Fuck Morrissey, he's shite. Post listen. Statement stands. This was self important tripe.
awful.
I hate Morrissey and think he's a pretentious narcissistic twat.
Morrissey at his lyrically worst??? Even if I agree with some of the sentiments it just comes off so cringe.
OH MY GOD THIS IS GARBAGE A SCARY GARBAGE I HATE MORRISON I HATE THAT TODAYS BIRD? I DONT KNOW A LITERAL QUARRY, TO BE HUNT. GODDAMN
There’s literally a song titled “The World is Full of Crashing Bores” on this album, and this gasbag thinks he’s somehow not one of them. Tells you pretty much everything you need to know about this.
I didn’t get past the first song. I don’t care if the music is “good” - the politics of it is immature and tired. 02-22-2026
It's been 2 years since I last listened to a solo Morrissey album and I still hate him.
