Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Album Nr. 66 Guter, ruhiger Indie/Alternative Rock. Mir jedoch ein wenig zu ruhig.
I quite like some of B&S’s albums from the late 1990s/early 2000s, and actually thought I had this one in my collection. Turns out I don’t, but that’s fine because while it’s the quintessential B&S sound, this album was just average to me.
Like many albums here, this doesn't get across the "7 out of 10" hump. It's got fun, catchy songs, and once upon a time, I actually sat down and listened to this album from beginning to end just because I enjoyed it, but even so, it's just good, not great. (This album also suffers some from "first half syndrome" -- the first three songs are the best. I wouldn't quite call the rest of the album filler, but it's weaker.)
One for the achingly cool kids. Me? I quite liked it.
I like Belle and Sebastian, but this isn't my favorite of theirs. Not a lot of stand out tracks.
Nothing really jumped out to me in the first half but then there are parts which really strongly remind me of Japanese Breakfast - a couple of songs I could easily imagine her covering. Sadly the vocal performance and the music/poduction doesn't come off as strong to me. Might just be the age? Might need listening to again.
Some absolute crackers on this (mainly She's losing it) a sad lonely sunday morning album
A bit boring
First listen Saved 5/10 Top track: She's Losing It
Enemmän meininkiä kuin useimmissa B&S:n albumeissa, hyvä! She’s losing it on oikein hyvä, koukkuakin löytyy.
Chill. Rainy Sunday afternoon stuff
Overall not my cup of tea, but seems like your typical indie band that makes for decent Sunday morning easy listening. Not a huge fan of the brass and found it was hard to understand the lyrics, so I the experience was pretty forgettable for me.
I know I should like Belle and Sebastian but I just can’t find much to love. Just too twee I think. Not bad at all but nothing I’m coming back to
Nice
I listened to a few songs, not all. I don't mind them
The State I Am In er en af de bedste debut-albums-åbnere nogensinde. Resten er tit rigtig godt men osse lidt all the over the place.
Ok for background music but overall too folksy for me.
pretty average pop
This was a pleasant enough listen, didn’t blow my mind though
Our second from Belle & Sebastian, which one's Belle and which one's Sebastion? Our first was wayyyy back at the beginning, maybe in our first five albums or so. I believe this is a (or the?) more famous album from them, mostly because I recognize the name. It started out strong, but after the first two tracks there wasn't much that grabbed me. As before, these guys make for a decent listen but I'm not too impressed. Favorite tracks: The State I'm In, Expectations. Album art: Black and white shot of a woman in a bath, breastfeeding a....stuffed animal? Maybe a toy fish? Kind of strange, but it's memorable, and with the striping on the fish (don't quote me on that, I'm not certain what I'm looking at), the title checks out. 3/5
It wasn't terrible.
Listenable. Melodic.
Not bad.
Not that bad tbh
Liked some, but not all
I liked this better than I thought I would because I’ve always had an impression that they are unbearably twee. Next day thought I can’t remember much about it so it’s a 3 from me. May revisit at some point
It's been an hour since I listened and I can't remember anything specific about the album, other than it was pleasant but very vanilla
Nice and dreamy Fav track: electric renaissance Light 3.5
Need to give this another spin to fully appreciate it I think, it was a bit backgrounded for my listen. But I found the pervasive pleasantness quite effective which is rare for me. Some great lyrics that popped out even though I'm not always one to pick up on lyrics. Would be interested to come back. Fave track: Expectations
Yeah, I like I like. Gentle and melodic pop to get me through the Friday afternoon. Ticked boxes, made me feel nice and nod my head along. Good. Three and a half. Fave track: Electronic Renaissance
Folky & upbeat, just a little slow for my taste.
Tigermilk has a perfectly average chamber pop sound, that was perfectly middle of the road. Their lyrics weave through strange stories of what I can only presume are of their town, that have religious conservative overtones, that if you're absentmindedly listening you wouldn't pick up. Best: Expectations Worst: We Rule The School
A nice indie album, I liked it. A few moments recalled The Shins, Postal Service, and The Smiths. Seems like homemade music made by honest music people. Would need to listen more to get a real feel, also interested in checking out Belle and Sebastian’s newer stuff. Three stars.
This one is decent. No real stand out songs for me. Good enough indie music but I dont think I would ever relisten
I actually liked it more than I thought I would but still not my cup of tea.
I didn't really like the first few songs, but it picked up after She's Losing it, and by Electronic Renaissance I was into it!
Yea it's alright!
Some decent stuff.
Missed this band the first time around, which is odd because I'm a child of the 80s. Solid songwriting. Stand out tracks, though I stopped paying attention while it was on as the album played. Over time I could grow to like this band.
Easy going indie. The name Belle and Sebastian made me think of a boiler room banger for some reason.
A bit more milktoast than tigermilk. Softer than I remembered
I can see the appeal, but it’s just not that exciting for me tight now
sometimes catchy, sometimes whiny the state i am in expectations electronic renaissance i could be dreaming my wandering days are over
Beautiful album. Very easy to listen. Put it on while working and didn't get me distracted. Tends to be a little repetitive though.
Ok ish nice melodies
Indie pop sound. Not bad but nothing that was overly impressive
Pretty okay, I feel like the band members would be cool people.
Easy listening and melodic, indie-ish sounds. Some of it was pleasant but the lyrics all seem bland... coming of age school days material.
It’s fun, in a dreary-Scottish-rainy-day sort of way. If you’re into that.
Seems to be sweet, but i don't like that sound in general
Belle and Sebastian had a honed sound right from the start. It's no wonder, then, that the discography from the 90's through to the early 2000's has been so revered for it's precious tone. I think it's a well-put-together album, but not quite as good as their sophomore release. A nice and easy listen.
It's a good album but nothing really stood out to me.
Eh it’s alright like electronic rennisance kinda puts me off the album being quite different and bang in the middle but it’s all listenable and entertaining I guess 3/5
Great album for a Sunday
Enjoyable tunes and relatively diverse sounds
Look, this is utterly lovely and listenable, but like all B&S a bit meh.
not feeling this one
Ok.bit dull
I feel like I would have loved this in college, but it was a little bit too twee for me right now. The platonic ideal of mid-00s indie movie soundtrack music.
Kinda like Nick Drake but I'd rather just listen to Nick Drake. Most of these songs were fairly enjoyable but I don't feel like revisiting the whole album after my initial listen.
A good record, but hasn't clawed into me like ..."Sinister"
So this was definitely different than what I was expecting. Maybe it was the cover, I don't know, but I was expecting some kind of techno or new age-y type of music. It seemed a lot more folk to me. I was bothered by the vocals, actually. That was the weakest point for me. They were very ramble-y like Jon Anderson, going very stream of consciousness but not in a good way. I just was not clear on what he was singing about, and it started to bother me more and more. By the time I got to the end, I was happy to not hear the singer, although the music behind him I would have liked to hear more of.
So indie pop/rock. I feel really conflicted about this genre, of which maybe Belle & Sebastian helped to re-invigorate for its explosion in the new millennium. I like some of the bands in this genre (Band of Horses, the Decemberists) while others I like some of their songs but get bored quickly (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service) or just can't stand (The Dandy Warhols). For the most part I hate that alternative rock is now synonymous with indie rock, such that it's this soft shit that you get when looking for stations or playlists of the alternative variety. Oh right, I'm supposed to talk about the album Tigermilk. I was intrigued by the first two songs (The State I Am In is quite good) but got bored quickly. I was already looking for something new to listen to by song three. That's not quite fair because I don't think this album is bad, it's just par for the course for indie pop/rock and me. I can only take so much, especially when they get too experimental or cute (looking at you Electronic Renaissance and I Could Be Dreaming). When I go back and listen again, indie bands like B&S aren't that different from 70's folk like Simon and Garfunkel. It feels like they're going for a similar sound, they just aren't as good. Not bad mind you, just not as good.
Liked it a lot more than I expected but not enough for a 4
I like Belle & Sebastian a lot and they're usually on my rotation of music that I regularly listen to. That being said, I just don't think this album is all that great. There aren't many songs or moments that stand out. I much prefer their pair of albums from 1998 where they really round into form and get creative
A couple of saves here and there. Pretty nice background music.
I can’t say with any certainty that Belle And Sebastian have ever come up on my radar before. The album art is a little odd (to say the least) so I’m truly unsure of what to expect here. Is this gonna be super weird? Let’s listen and find out. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Expectations This was a pretty chilled out album. It’s fairly minimal and is mostly acoustic. I’d probably say it’s music that makes me want to toast marshmallows. The vocals are imperfect but charming, and the music is decent but not remarkable. This is an album that I enjoyed, but it didn’t really have any lasting impact on me. Realistically, I’m unlikely to come back to this, but I enjoyed the day listening to it.
I'm a fan of their peaceful and happy jangly chamber pop. Album starts off with two killer catchy and lush tracks, but I don't think it reaches that high again unlike their next album If You're Feeling Sinister which is full of bangers. Several filler songs like "You're Just a Baby" or "We Rule the School", but there are lots of beautiful moments, like the woodwind and harmonies in the closer "Mary Jo" or the ethereal vocals in "My Wandering Days," even if I'm not a fan of the first half of either song. They get creative with electric production on "Electronic Renaissance" and "I Could Be Dreaming" (reminds me of Stereolab or Of Montreal) but they don't fit in too well, and I'm not sure it exactly matches their style.
Some nice moments. I never really got into Belle and Sebastian, although I'm going to see them live soon. Light, nice, very British.
Album was interesting, I’m not a huge fan of light and mellow vocals but the instrumentality made up for it. Big variety in what instruments were played in every song and overall vibes were good. My favorite song was Electronic Renaissance because of the intro and I’m a big fan of the rhythm. Overall 3.55 :D
"Electronic Renaissance" was interesting. Other songs were good, but not my cup of tea. Felt older than it is. 3
Electronic Renaissance was my favorite track (reminds me a bit of LCD Soundsystem). I really wanted to like B&S; I've heard them mentioned so many times. But most of the songs on this album felt boring to me. I like simple stuff, but it feels TOO simple or something. A couple of the tracks sound like a talented comedian doing a spoof of mellow, introspective folk music.
Mooi rustig
I like a lot of what's here, but the limp, wimpy vocals bring it down. Favorite track: I Don't Love Anyone
Seems simple but provoking lyrics and interesting melody
Fine
Cool, but not outstanding.
Very good debut album, fits the kinda indie vibe I like.
Was pretty good. Not the type of music I generally listen to but I’m glad I got to hear it.
A strong example of mid 90s indie
Nice easy listening. Evokes a strong 60s vibe.
One B&S was pretty far fetched for this list, but a second one, really? It's not bad, but there's just really nothing incredible in there
Better than the first album and has a strong start. Think it falls off abit and musically becomes not all that impressive. Trumpet/violin near the beginning was great though. 7/10
This was ok. I like Belle & Sebastian generally, but this album is not one of my favorites. It’s sort of just ‘there’.
This is a good intro to the indie scene from the early 00s
It was good! It's leaning towards a 3.5 actually.
A little bit hazy and dream-like to be too interesting
Chill
It's okay, reminded me of Simon and Garfunkel. I liked a couple songs but most were pretty boring.
Weird album with a weird name. Wasn't terrible to listen to but didn't really care for it. 3 stars
Pleasant enough but let down by crap singing
I didn't love this album but it was put together in three days. I'll listen to more of there stuff for sure.
Weird album art aside, I found this album to be good background music while I was reading. Nothing really stood out that grabbed my attention. Decent music overall, I may revisit them later on.
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Expectations
I'm sure there are some Belle and Sebastian songs that I like. I gave this album 3 goes and I didn't really get into it. Fave tracks would be She's Losing It and Mary Jo.
It's good, but not as good as "If You're Feeling Sinister".
I quite enjoyed this but can't deny it wasn't pretty bland. My dad was a fan when I was growing up, I didn't recognise any of this though. Perhaps they have more interesting albums...
Twee, quiet, fine. The sort of music for precocious teenage girls starting art college. Quirky I suppose, simple, understated, not quite boring but not far off. You won't be offended by this folksy, twinkly, introspective little album but it struggles to light a fire for me
Ok, album gets tiring after a while though.
Pleasant, quirky, doesn't really get my blood moving. This band has always basically gone in one ear and out the other.
It's fine, I can appreciate Belle & Sebastian but just doesn't do anything for me. I liked the electronic song though.
They're like milquetoast less-interesting proto-Decemberists. Best track: Expectations
I personally found it to be good, but not great. I understand that the style shows different aspects of music along the album. It just wasn’t my favorite, nothing spoke out to me
It's alright. That 60's pop sounds doesn't really entice me.
An enjoyable listen, it's pretty much twee indie which I unashamedly really enjoy. If "If You're Feeling Sinister" had not been so fresh in my mind (it was my album 2 days ago) this would have potentially gotten 4/5 but I definitely preferred their other album.
I thought I'd like this more, I'm just not that into the chamber pop-y style of having strings in nearly every song. Also, the vocals were pretty low in the mix for most of the songs which made it especially hard to hear the songs while driving. I've heard The State I'm In a lot and I really love that song, but most of the rest of the album didn't really jump out at first blush. Standouts: The State I'm In, Electronic Renaissance, I Could Be Dreaming
It’s alright, but forgettable. May need a few more listens, but I can’t promise I’m up for it.
Aw, Belle And Sebastian... I've always really *wanted* to like this band. Badly. On paper, it's as if I should be charmed by their timeless, unobtrusive style and witty one-liners. But the truth is, I get bored pretty quickly when I try listening to their albums. All those airy vocal lines and happy-go-lucky trumpet parts sound a little too hackneyed and/or naive to my ears. Maybe the fault lies with me, I don't know... That said, I still feel like if really you had to select one or even two important records from this band, *The Boy With The Arab Strap* or *If You're Feeling Sinister* should come first. My overall boredom is less noticeable when I try listening to those LPs. So, it's gonna be "no" for *"Tigermilk"*. Number of albums left to review: 711 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 145 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 70 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 80 (including this one)
ok
Not bad
Some redeeming moments
Ah, another Belle & Sebastian album. This one lacks all the associated memories compared to the other one we reviewed. So good, catchy, but not great for me personally
Listening to this album is like raking leaves and doing yard work I don't mind doing.
See "If You're Feeling Sinister" review (#386).
This is a solid album I wouldn’t mind hearing again. The song styles are a bit all over the place, which is understandable being that this is B&S’s debut. More songs like Electronic Renaissance, no surprise my favorite track by far, would push this album to a higher rating.
Not really my thing but I can see the appeal
I've never been a B&S fan to be honest, but I enjoyed this more than I expect to. I doubt I'd listen again - I wasn't moved
Favourite track(s): Expectations; She's Losing It Maybe it is because I have listened to this album playing in the background for several times by now. But the tracks are unexpectedly catchy, the instrumentals being not too up front but still interesting (brass here, synth and e-piano there) and the vocals easy to sing along with. Electronic Renaissance is a bit of a letdown (a bit style over substance). The tracks in the back half are a bit monotonous. Mary Jo is a good closing track at least.
Relaxing indie/folk/pop
😑
Their music has never made me want to binge because it’s milquetoast. But I can listen to a few songs before getting antsy.
muy bonito🥺💘 7.5/10
I like this album. I hadn't heard of the band or any of their music before this. Nice sound. Strikes a good balance between styles. Very well done.
Pretty nice sounds. Didn't really wow me, but didn't annoy me either. Comfortable 90s indie rock.
Pretty good
Me gustaron varias cosas, super suave. Me descolocó lo de la electrónica
3.5. It's very listenable. Standouts: The State I Am In, Electronic Renaissance, I Could Be Dreaming, My Wandering Days Are Over.
Pretty good, but a bit dull. May have just been I wasn't in the mood for it though. Sounded quite like Nick Drake
All very ‘nice’. Pleasant arrangements and vocals but I won’t listen again.
Grew on me
A very calm and relaxing album. Love the singers voice. Clearly defines the tropes the future projects in this genre would follow. Loved the state im in and electronic renaissance. Thought Mary jo was a great finisher for the album.
Fun as background music
Fun album. Not necessarily my genre but I recognize some decent song writing in here.
Smooth but vanilla pop music that leans toward folk. I liked “You’re just a baby” best — it verges on rock.
This was a cute little album, but not one I think is essential to listen to. The other Belle and Sebastian album we heard was better. Again this choice shows the biases of the list makers.
The state I am in- alright Expectations- very good instrumental, lyrics bit on the nose but tell a good story👍 She's losing it- jaunty song about (political?) lesbians You're just a baby- bit creepy tbh, but nice and upbeat Electronic renaissance - love the vibe of the song interesting vocal effects👍 I could be dreaming- pretty groovy and v interesting👍 We rule the school - meh, pretty uninteresting My wandering days are over - nice chorus and lyrics👍 I don't love anyone-bit boring and repetitive Mary Jo - bit too real lol, V good👍 All in all a well put together album especially considering circumstances. This is definitely more my typical type of Music 3/5
not all songs as good very fun otherwise
You can kind of tell what kind of music this is going to be just based off of the cover art. Pretty soft poppish music that you'd hear in coffee shops. Just interesting enough to be likable but nothing unique enough to stand out or remember. 3/5 for me
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: I did, it had a lot of nicely blended things in the strong points for this album which for me is the start till the middle Favourite song: Track 2 - Expectations
Belle and Sebastian is a band I should love, yet... I just don't care for them. I've tried to listen to their music and it just don't vibe. I like adjacent bands like Camera Obscura or The New Pornographers but B&S just don't vibe with me. Also they totally ripped off Queen for Funny Little Frog and I never seen this mentioned anywhere. 2.5/5
okay? i guess?
pleasant
OK folky indie album. Didn't do much for me.
Delicate indie pop. A nice listen.
Surfy and upbeat vibes. Good for a sunny day.
3.5 maybe. I liked something about them
This could easily bump to 4 stars if listen to it enough. I liked most songs on this album
S&G vibes. Gilmore Girl vibes.
Background music. Downtempo, a bit avant-garde.
great lyrics but did not like the vocalist
The album started off strange but ended fine. They reminded me of the Velvet Underground, who they actually mention in a song. It may not have been a reference to the band the Velvet Underground but they said the name. Also the song I Don't Love Anyone sounded like I Only Wanna Be With you by Hootie & The Blowfish which prompted ne to have a day of Hootie!
B&S treats me like peanut butter. I don’t want it at first, then I have some, remember how good it is, and before I know it, I’ve downed 3-4 teaspoonfuls of it. And then I’m sick of it and don’t want it. Until the next time.
You're just a baby
One of my favourite bands But not their best albums Cover art 2/5 truly weird
Tää bändi ei oo ikinä sytyttänyt mua pahenmin vaikka miellän tän kyllä sillai ”hyväksi bändiksi”. Ei moitittavaa 3/5
Bändillä on ainakin kaks paljon parempaa levyä, mutta tämäkin ihan ok.
Kiinnostavahkoa ysäritaidepoppista. Voisi joskus nousta, mutta ensikuulemalta jätetään nyt 3/5.
I think you have to be in the mood to enjoy this, it's not something that you can play anytime. It's good though.
it was very pretty sounding and angelic. i liked it but not too much. 😁
Same day as Kendrick released
this is totally solid but nothing hits like on if you're feeling sinister imo
Good debut album, but didn't stand out for me
The only song I liked was Electronic Renaissance
Kinda wimpy white guy indie music. Some good songs, not bad. British sounding.
Charming 90s indie stuff. Highlight: She's Losing It.
Indie pop
I am so torn. On the one hand, this album is amazing. All that is put into the lyrics and the sound. It's beautiful and impactful. On the other hand, the vocals are so understated that it losses me at times. I so want to be a bigger fan and in awe. The story of how the art is made matters and it makes the album all the richer here. The more I listen, the more I can dive into the epiphany of each song as a counterweight to the lack of connection to the vocals. This will go in to my rotation b/c I like it but I want to love it.
Decent indie pop but not really my favorite. Some catchy tunes and no real standouts.
Did not blow me away, but did not bore me either. Cannot now remember any of the tracks though.
I quite enjoyed this - seems to have sparked some pretty strong opinions both ways here, but it's a middle of the road 3 for me. Quite gentle, picks up the pace on a couple of the tracks. I know the name Belle & Sebastian, but couldn't name a song of theirs. It's perfectly pleasant, there are a couple of tracks that remind me of the Shins, quirky lyrics and some odd messages.
Okay, didn’t blow me away, but was pleasant enough. I might get into it more with a few more listens.
This was a fun listen, I liked it, kind of like the shins or badly drawn boy.
I like Belle and Sebastian but this one is not my favorite. All the song work is there that I like, these sort of winding melodies that are very light and can be pretty dark, pretty funny. But this one doesn't pull me in the way that, say, Dear Catastrophe Waitress does.
I loved it a lot, I'm not sure if I liked it as much as "if you're feeling sinister" but as a debut album there's so much charm and talent on display. Got a little bit more tedious for me towards the end, but the first half was full of great songs that show the band that had something they wanted to prove to the world. 3.5/5
Some weird stuff (that's not a bad thing) and some wonderful writing. Mostly, it's like and indie movie soundtrack.
It was good but not the best
Solid debut, though the production I always feel with B and S is a little thin and twee, the songs are well-written.
Indie. Ni fu ni fa.
There's lots to like with this throwback. I was getting '60s hippie vibes, and was getting hopeful. But his voice becomes repetitive. There are far too many albums that suffer from lack of variety. This is one of them. Can someone explain why I must listen to this album?
2/25/22
Nice for a snowy morning!
Ok album, not bad, not good
This is a classic indie pop album of a band still in formation. Although all tracks were composed by Stuart Murdoch almost as a solo effort, it really feels like it was conceived considering that a band would play it. And that's the evolution that made Belle & Sebastian this big number of the scottish indie scene. "The State I Am In" and "You're Just a Baby" are great songs.
Better than I thought it would be.
I loved belle and sebastian in high school and college. I saw them live and stuff. Now as a relatively boring man approaching middle age, it doesnt speak to me in the same way
It was fine
not as good as sinister
Nice 3, very calming
Some nice and soft tunes, Not bad for mus. biz. students, Got a good vibe going. 6/10
It's good, I think.. not actually sure how much I enjoyed it, I just know I didn't dislike it. There's a lot of diversity here and some catchy tunes. Vocals were pretty meh, not really my taste, but good enough to be bearable. Also that album cover, huh? It sure is an album cover.
First song started off slow, but really picked up about halfway through. An enjoyable listen. I Could Be Dreaming sounds like something out of The Sims... Rest of the songs were okay, an enjoyable listen, but not something I would revisit.
Easy listening, new music for me
3/5 I’ve read the word twee used to describe this album and after looking up the definition, I’d have to agree that the lyrics occasionally take it to that level of almost too cloying. Musically the album is interesting with a dissonance happening between fun/bright instrumentals and serious/darker lyrics in songs like “She’s losing it”, “I Could Be Dreaming”, and “Expectations”. A song that I’m really torn between is “You’re Just A Baby”, I really enjoy this song musically but the lyrics weird me out in a way, perhaps that’s the point or maybe this is an example of stepping over the line of being too quaint. Overall the album was enjoyable though not exactly what I’m into. Fav Songs: Expectations, Electronic Renaissance, My Wandering Days Are Over Least Fav Song: I Don’t Love Anyone
to be honest, not what I thought Belle & Sebastian sounded like. It was harmless, if a bit boring and plain.
Seems like a decent enough album. Not really my kind of music though.
Very very very mellow album, I’d recommend for background listening or something to put in while you read. Not my cup of tea but pretty solid overall.
meh, niš spec ne loži me fazon, ispreskakao sam pola pri slušanju
This one grew on me over time. It reminded me of the band the Decemberists. No recognized songs
Good
3.4 - Another good (not great) album from B&S but not much to distinguish this from “If You’re Feeling Sinister” aside from a few goofy sonic experiments like on “Electronic Renaissance.” Hope this one’s the last from them.
Mmmm ok I guess
Yeah, cool... reminds me of someone, but I can't remember who.
Like a modern-day Fairport at times. Lovely.
Lichte pop-muziek.
Easy listening, nothing stood out.
Interesting sounding album. Will listen again. Quite surprised
An indie version of the beautiful south. With extra tweeness. Having said that, I do enjoy some B&S from time to time. This isn't my favourite though
They’ve never been a ballsiest group, but they do their thing well. Always pretty relaxed and catchy
My imagination wandered right into the recursive parody of the absurdly manly metal band Spinal Tap and the flashback to their 60’s sissy origins. I don’t know the background of Belle & Sebastian so I can’t tell if they’re taking the piss on milquetoast Irish folk or anything. Cheerful and bright, but subversive somehow. I would not be surprised if there’s a follow-up where they take a hard left turn with a miniature Stonehenge.
Sounded pretty good, but overall not something I would listen to multiple times.
Another of these groups it seems like I should be into on paper: the execution is certainly polished but something about it all hits me as insincere.
Tranquilo de escuchar. Pop con buena voz
Beautiful but maybe a bit boring at times? "I Could Be Dreaming" was nice.
Musically really pretty, pleasant arrangements, a mostly breezy listen if somewhat bittersweet. I'm not fond of Stuart Murdoch's vocals though. He has this anemic, emotionally flat style of delivery that leaves me cold. I didn't find anything particularly compelling in the lyrics. Fave Songs: We Rule the School, My Wandering Days Are Over, She's Losing It, Expectations
Really nice pretty easy listening album
A good one but not my fav
Meh. The sound is nice and the talent is there for someone who's more into this style. Just not me.
As a teenager probably would have liked this. Early indie songs about teenage love and meaningful glances and holding hands. First few songs are acoustic, then switches to a bit of a more electronic and energetic vibe. Towards the end reverts back to the melancholy teenage sadness a bit.
Meh
Not their greatest work, but a pleasant backdrop for wrapping up my Friday.
pop, indie, folk,
So so pop. A bit fey. Enjoyed hearing the song based on New Order's Procession and other influences. Like The Divine Comedy this will need more listens to appreciate the clever lyrics. Lovely album cover!
Also good, but Sinister is better
crafted and beautiful but drifts toward reflective parody at times
It was alright, kind of strange. I don't think I would listen to it again.
It's alright. Favorite tracks are 'Electronic Renaissance', 'I Don't Love Anyone' and 'Mary Jo'.
Buena experiencia.
Took me back Loved some of the songs …the ones with darkness at the edges
7/10 ludomatics
Didn't like it at first but started to enjoy it somehow after the 3rd track. Not really my cup of tea though, still enjoyable listen.
Pleasant and annoying in equal measures
meh -- not really my jammb
1. The State I Am In- Pretty background guitars. I like the build up to the end. The lyrics are complex- it might take me awhile to fully understand them. 2. Expectations- This is super indie-cute. It was on the Juno soundtrack and I can totally see it. Kind of perfectly sums up how it is to be an awkward teenage girl. 3. She's Losing It- I like the horns. This is kind of an upbeat song considering the subject matter seems a little dark. Is it about a woman realizing she's a lesbian? Not sure. It's catchy, though. 4. You're Just a Baby- Wondering if this is from the POV of a parent speaking to a child. I get some Beatles vibes from this. 5. Electronic Renaissance- Already LOVE the intro of this song- very synthy and quite different than the rest of the tracks. This is a cool, kinda trippy song that has the potential to make it into my rotation. 6. I Could Be Dreaming- back to the guitar driven, dream pop sound. Not my fav on the album though, kinda forgettable. 7. We Rule the World- Pretty song with piano, flute, and violin. Not really sure what it's about- possibly how small and insignificant we are and how what we do doesn't really matter so we might as well do what we want? 8. My Wandering Days Are Over- I like this song. I think it's kind of about just settling down. 9. This sounds very 90s, almost like Hootie and the Blowfish in the intro! Sounds like it's from the perspective of a moody teenager. 10. Mary Jo- Nice, pretty song to end the album. I know very little of The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed, but from what I know I hear a lot of their influence in this music. Aside from one song (Electronic Renaissance), most of the songs on this album sound pretty similar. It's that sing-talky acoustic indie sound that I think made a comeback in the late 2000s. It's not bad, but to listen to a whole album of it is a lot. This group has had a long career so it would be interesting to see how their music has evolved over time. 3 stars- not bad at all but aside from a couple songs, I probably wouldn't return to it.
Nota:5/10
I'm already a fan of this band. Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister (1996) is unequivocally their best album, but this debut from earlier the same year is still good. They are all about self-aware melancholy wistfulness and the indie sad-happy dynamic. Stuart Murdoch's twee song-writing and clumsy vocals are the main point of interest, and sadly the songs on this are just not as strong as the follow-up album. I really like the lo-fi synthpop of "Electronic Renaissance" and quite wish they'd done a whole album of that (Casiotone for the Painfully Alone style). Overall, their next album definitely deserves its place on the list, but this one is 3/5 to me.
It's fine
Some nice indie singer songwriter stuff, with a little electronic flavor peppered in here and there. I didn’t love it, but I certainly liked it.
At first glance I didn’t think I was going to like this one and ended up saving a couple songs. Very fun album. Upbeat. Indie vibes. Will not return to the album as a whole but happy I stubbles upon it.
its some music isn't it. its nice but fairly wishy washy, it just passes you by. there aren't really any emotions stirred up by this music. it just happens and then when it stops you kind of just notice why its gone quiet instead of feeling sadness that the entrhalling music that has you so gripped has ended.
This is better than I expected it to be. Definitely has that 90’s college/indie band sound. Dude is a master at melody. Not going to purchase, not yet. But I will listen again. I’m also getting a more consistently upbeat version on James. I get all the twee descriptions
I listened to this yesterday but didn't remember a single thing about it. Was better upon second listen, some surprisingly nice tracks
3.5/5 I think I should listen to it again. It seemed promising
Different, not too shabby
Good album. Non offensive, enjoyable.
Awesome
Det kan et eller andet
good album, didnt really pay much attention to the lyrics but nice background music
Good.
Nice angst & humour in the vocals. The first thirty seconds had me chuckling. I like the addition of strings & horns to some of the songs. It gave them a mid-sixties feel and more of it would have reduced the overall sameness of the songs.
Ok
Not bad, but not really good. I thought it'd be better. But it was OK. Nice way of finishing the work week
Somber and delicate melodies accompanied by piano and guitar. The first half wasn’t the most exciting for me personally. I enjoyed Electric Renaissance quite a bit. Decent album, but I prefer the Scottish Indie Pop group’s “Write About Love”, although it is like splitting hairs.
I kind of like the soft pop sound.
So twee and light. But beneath those delightful melodies lurks some sharp satire and hipster angst.
Ok
The album peaks in the first half. Expectations through to I Could Be Dreaming are the standout tracks. The latter half of the album seems to mould into one and the songs don’t stand out as much. Still a half decent album with interesting lyrics. It’s very listenable (probably driving through the countryside) but it could be better based on the standard of the first half.
Not my style
Almost decemberists sounding. Pretty cool!
I liked this album, it was a mix of Elliott Smith, mountain goats, and....i wanna say Spoon.
I don’t love it, didn’t hate it. Decent background music.
good soft indie
okay. might give me an existential crisis???
It's a very different sound and style than current Belle and Sebastian, that's for sure. I would equate it to a less ambitious Abbey Road, maybe? I know it's a bit cliche to compare a band to the Beatles, but that was my thought while listening to it. I appreciated how things got a little shaken up into electronica halfway through the album, but I enjoyed the A-side more than the B. Favorite song is The State I'm In, least favorite is I Could Be Dreaming.
sad indie vampire weekend
infelizmente o feeling sinister é melhor...
Fun bouncy indie pop, but very tremulous vocals
3.1
First 4 tracks are phenomenal. Enjoyed them a lot, great lyrics and music. 5th song started to get more electronic which didn't work as well for them. Most of the rest of the tracks were ok, nothing too memorable though I really enjoyed the final track May Jo. 3.5
5/10 I didn't really vibe much with this, but it was nice enough as background music
Reminds of The Kooks, or a decomposed JoyDivision. 3.5 stars
A bit too much hippy/indie for me, but not bad. Liked to opener and "We rule the school"
This is not my kind of music but it was fine on a rainy morning. I don't think I'll listen to it again on my own but I won't shoot it down if someone throws it on. It was too slow for what I'm used to. Since I dont have an ear for the music, it seemed to blend together. I liked Electronic Renaissance, The State I Am In, and My Wandering Days Are Over.
A decent feel-good indy album.
false
Ahead of its time, but in a direction I'm not a fan of
Good bit of folk music there nice mellow stuff.
Yeah very mellow indie with some dark undertones.
It’s put together well enough but nothing really grabs me here
I called this album, "the album that launched every indie band in Washington state," and I think I stand by that. It wasn't bad, just wasn't super memorable to me. Could see why people like it and wouldn't be opposed to listening to another by them. Favorite tracks: "Electronic Renaissance", "She's Losing It"
I remember being ga-ga for belle and Sebastian in college, a fav of my gf at the time. The songs are still tight and the guitars sound really lush on 2026 headphones compared to the tinny things I was using back then. However, I find that I’m no longer as much of a fan of Murdoch’s voice — it lacks a punch and I crave music that goes beyond cozy these days.
A fairly easy-listening album that never does anything exciting in it's runtime. I'd listen to this again, but only because there isn't anything there that's offensive. 2.5 stars rounding down.
Why??? I’m so confused by this one
Nick Drake wannabees beloved for some reason. I am not one of them.
Bleh. Nothing special about this. Fine. 5/10 seems right.
I wouldn't say it was a bad listen at all; the arrangements are actually really intricate and pleasant, however this style of soft indie just vaporizes me for some reason. I'm sure even fans of the album will understand! Standouts: Electronic Renaissance • I Could Be Dreaming • My Wandering Days Are Over
What I expected from Belle and Sebastian. I like some of their music but this album was just average at best. 4.5/10 Top song Expectations
Pretty slow didn’t really vibe with any of the songs tbh. We Rule the School had a good flute or something.
