Reviews (page 2 of 7)

Buah vaya disco guapo. Mis favoritas On the Lash, Caviar y Getting Bright at Night.

Great find. I listened to it twice.

Looked these guys up on Wikipedia. The singers name sounds familiar. I may have interviewed him for a podcast? I like this album so far. It’s my kind of noise and energy. Opening track was great. On track two and I like that one too. I love an album like this where it starts good and gets better. Track 4 “Caviar” grabbed me right away and I’m in now. This is great. I was not expecting “spike island”. It’s still raw but very melodic. It’s almost like the opening track was their “process of weeding out” and if you stay the album just keeps getting better. And now “Kiss like lizards”. This album is fantastic. I love the contrast in this album from brash and hyper, to almost pop melodic, to a slow lumbering heavy rock with distortion and then unexpected clean tones. This album is a masterpiece. On “big sleep”. I would have loved to have seen this tour. “Seasick” is a great song.

Nice to hear something new, and that takes you on such a fun ride. One of those albums the manages to sound like everyone and no-one at the same time. Which in the end actually makes them rather original. I just really enjoyed the organised chaos of many of the songs, where they flip between vocals or bass or guitar in the lead, never really feeling like you know where a song will go. I like being kept guessing.

The first half of this album is really great, I love the noise elements, but everything from Getting Bright At Night and onwards just kind of meanders and isn't super captivating. It just sounds like a modern version of the Stooges, which is fine, but not my thing. Still a very good album though. High 4!

Noisey rock music buried in feedback. It sounds pretty good. It's not great and far from original but it rocks and it's fun. Play 'spot the influences'- I started to but got bored so I just laid back, closed my eyes and listened. Not a bad way to kill an hour- let it bleed, I reckon.

Could’ve trimmed some of the fat. I was ready for it to be done a few songs before it ended. That said, I did enjoy most of it. I love the raw production.

Perhaps a bit of an odd choice for the list but I really liked this. Snarly garage rock revival with lots of post punk edge thrown in. Really great

Hmmm. It definitely sounds like a band trying to ride Jack White's coattails, and yet I found myself enjoying it. Granted, I'm a White Stripes loving elder Millennial, so I might just be in the correct age range. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't hold up with younger audiences.

3.5 - I've never heard of this band, but I thoroughly enjoyed this album.

I love post hardcore! Listening to this album made me want to pick up bass again.

Len Houmous once said The Icarus Line are the Go West of the new age. 3.9 1/13 Up Against The Wall Motherfucker

Jesus! Where was this album in the early 90s?! It fits perfectly into that decade; feeling a bit like Jane's Addiction meets The Doors (vibe), The Cult (guitar), and punk/grunge vocals like Mudhoney and The Stooges. It's a bit of a gyp for the band and music lovers that this album came out in 2004 instead of 1994 where it would've made them wildly famous. This may be the best of the almost 300 albums I've listened to on the list so far. Going to add some of these tracks to my daily rotation.

Pretty good !

Ok but not sure I'll listen again

Love me some good ol' loud rock. All the boomers on here just lost their hearing so they can't appriciate this. Borders on noise rock which even I can't listen too but overall it's great. Absolutely love it. Think the latter half of the album has more hits too. I thought that White Devil was the best off the record with the addition of the saxophone. That's a pure 10/10. Virgin Velcro and Kiss Like Lizards are two more stand out tracks but all 13 tracks are enjoyable to me. 4.5/5

Why is the mix quality on Spit On It so much worse than Up Against the Wall Motherfucker? Its quite a jarring jump from the first track to second. I like the attitude of this album. Fave Tracks: Up Against the Wall Motherfucker 3.9/5

This was cool - I appreciated the balance between a raw sound and a more polished sound.

Will listen again

Pretty heavy but I actually enjoyed the listen

It was good

Gnarly album but man WTF is that cover photo

Surprisingly cool, not digging the cursive voice in some of the songs but it balances itself out with an amazing tune in the back.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a rock album with distorted guitars and heavy riffs. It reminds me of Wolfmother. While there's a bit of harshness that I don't care for, overall I like it quite a bit. I would listen to this again.

У кого-то получалось сносно (например у группы the Инсульты, a.k.a.

Really liked this, great energy, feels at home with the rest of the stuff I'm into -punky and dark - will return to this for some deeper listens - but the first album on this list in a while (that I hadn't already heard) that really jumped out at me.

Solid🎸

It sounds like a mix of White Stripes and Jet, with a very '90s vibe. Cool. 4 stars.

This was chaos. I had never heard of them before. I definitely see the similarities with the stooges. Despite the insanity, I kind of liked it. 3/16/26

I found this on YouTube I like it!!!

Forgot these guys existed

ooooh I'm diggin this style. Kinda reminds me of The White Stripes or Jack White. I don't know. But yeah like the sound for sure. White Devil is dope! Sounds a lot like Marilyn Manson. This was great! 4 stars.

A surprisingly good punk / art rock album. I am uploading this review quite late as I wasn’t able to log in over the weekend. I really enjoyed the heaviness of the first half of the album from ‘Up Against the Wall Motherfucker’ ‘Spit On It’, ‘On the Lash’ and Caviar’ As those tracks became my favourite in the album, for some reason the second half didn’t intrigue me as much but It allowed me to understand the grungy atmosphere the band built for this body of work. The lyric in Caviar ‘true love hits like death from above’ stood out to me because of the song’s subject matter of addiction/ critique of beauty from my pint of view. The drums and sleazy guitar riffs! Those for seamlessly alongside Wattsons talk-singing. To conclude this was an excellent album to get me into the more ‘heavier’ sounds of early 2000’s rock. Not to forgot the well composed cover with the red thread and singer in motion! 4/5- Another great rock album -GEMV (26-7.02.2026)

Enjoyed this one a lot, strong start and good energy throughout, low 4

Ahead of its time. Class though

I thought metal is not my thing but I enjoyed this very much

belle découverte

This is actually pretty great!

00’s Alternative Rock ⭐️Getting Bright At Night

Das war toll!

Loud and aggressive, this album certaintly has bangers. This might be the lists' most least known addition, barely cracking 50k plays on spotify. I think it's actually pretty good, but runs on a little too long. Also not really sure why it was even chosen for the list anyway

Pretty good album for being so noise-rock-focused. Definitely preferred when the album leaned into rock more than noise, but the energy carries through in a very palpable and entertaining way. Could be a little shorter, but very solid overall. Top tracks: Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers, Spike Island, Virgin Velcro

I actually liked this album. I was a little worried when all I saw was 1 & 2 star reviews. I hadn't heard of the group before. The Icarus Line are loud and aggressive. I particularly liked "Getting Bright at Night"

Not knowingly listened to them before but really enjoyed it, right up my driveway

Shortly after this album came out, guitarist Aaron North quit the band. Engineer Alan Moulder suggested that he audition for Nine Inch Nails' live band. According to Trent Reznor: "He shows up, he looks shitty, he's got junk equipment, he looks like he's just got up and I want to punch him. And then Aaron starts playing and on the first note it's like, 'You're the guy.' He wasn't trying to be me, and play like I play. He played and chaos came out." My experience listening to The Icarus Line was similar. At first I hated it and was planning on giving it 2 stars. But the more I listened the more I got into it. It was like an aggressive blend of punk, indie and noise rock. I'm really surprised by how much I ended up enjoying this one by the end. I'd listen again if I was in the right mood.

I’ve never heard of this band before but I like them!

First impression was bad (new metal) but it’s actually not that bad.

Energetically solid. ★★★★

Nothing wrong with this! Dragged a bit but was interesting enough.

Very familiar with the album. Used to listen to it all the time in college. Always felt like the album was soundtrack for a night out with too much partying, evoking some rowdy, devil may care shenanigans. 'getting bright at night' kind of starts to slows things down a bit for the rest of the album looses some momentum but it's like a breather before rally of the last song, ready to do it all again.

They're rock, with some industrial influence. They come so close to having a good hook, and stop short, which keeps them from getting too deep into your head. Will definitely look for more from these guys.

Great album. Really good.

I always felt that this was the music the 2 kids from High Fidelity created. I like it, but it’s incredibly niche.

Enjoyed this quite a lot, never heard of them before

A bit typical of the time and more screechy than I tend to prefer.

Bloody good noise rock with some absolute belters!

I liked this album, so much. It is fresh and has many good songs. I didn't expect to find things like that on this list, but I'm glad there are. It was hard to find the album, though.

Listened Before? N Well, this is telling something about my musical tastes but I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this album. Raw and brutal. Reminds me of early Nirvana. Absolutely killer. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Kiss Like Lizards

Pretty good, a but samey but overall great sound

Black Rebel Motorcycle Drive-In? Tempted to say a low 4. Could have been shorter.

Well, that was an unexpected one. I quite enjoyed it, I don't know that any of the tracks jumped out as great songs, but I enjoyed the ride. Actually reminded me quite a lot of Jet, I'm not sure that they are a polite comparison as often they seem to get derided, but it's that heavier swagger that they have. These feel perhaps more American in tone, but it feels essentially the same. I quite enjoyed it, I'm not immediately seeking out more, but I would like to hear their big tracks to see if anything drags me in, which none of these quite did.

Solid sound, if a bit disjointed. It did feel overall cohesive. Not a bad listen!

super fun and heavy, diverse too!

This is a weird one. Maybe I just need to buy the book to see if the editors announce their motivations adding an album to the list. But this album, while acclaimed at the time, doesn't appear to have been wildly influential. The band, who sound like they were mostly a regional act with stints opening for bigger bands on tour, has largely been forgotten (1,995 monthly listeners on Spotify). Not saying there shouldn't be some underground stuff on the list but I'm always left wondering "why *this* one?" Anyway, all that said, I enjoyed the album. 3.5 rounding up.

2004 Never heard of this, but it's a banger... Full of filthy bass and definitely purchase material. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ twice Revisit ✅️ Very, very good ★★★★☆ (8/10)

Fist listen. No problem with this, none at all.

I don' understand the hate.

I wasn't feeling this at first, but by minute 35 I began to understand the vibe of this album. Still not my thing, but not bad.

Gefällt mir. Ao in die Richtung White Stripes/Black Keys

Iggy pop, White stripes intersection

Could immediately tell the stooges influence. Overall album was good but didn't wow me. Had some good bass in many songs. I would listen to again.

Best tracks: On the lash and Spike Island

Not bad, good solid rock/punk

First few tracks kind of go awesome mode, fun anger-packed rough rocking album that appeals to my inner violent sensibilities

Wow! This one came out of nowhere. Felt like I'd just seen a killer live act from an awesome garage band. Pure energy and attitude.

great. never heard before.

I decided to listen to the first Icarus Line album before this one, as I have owned that one since it came out and remember being a bit disappointed with their second album (Penance Soiree), at the time. I do like this second album quite a bit, now, but I do see why I would have likely been a little less enthused when I was younger. The first album is much crazier, more energy, closer to screamo and post-hardcore of the time. The second album is definitely an "evolution" and makes complete sense. It has almost no screaming, darker mood, slower but still the southern rock inspired sounds and riffs.

It was really exciting to get this recommendation, considering I've never heard of this band. Love it and would listen again.

very bass-heavy, love the voice (kinda raspy, sexy) mixture between alt, punk rock, hard rock, metal, goth metal not well-known at all somewhat reminds me of deftones...

Unexpectedly enjoyable noises

Y’all made it sound so terrible. It was fine. Like Jane’s Addiction in a dive bar club.

Only 1,600 monthly spotify listeners, and probably a lot of them are from this project. Almost listened to Icarus Falls by Zayn instead (awesome album btw) Honestly, I like this. I hear some Stone Roses, some U2, some Rolling Stones. It's a lot better than the reviews make it out to be. I can't focus on the lyrics much as I'm revising at the same time, but I really like the sound of the songs!! Overall: 4/5

Pretty good, fairly heavy album but an enjoyable listen.

Distortion to a chaotic extreme. Somewhat offputting

You could tell the influence of acts like Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana in this. I felt like "Kiss Like Lizards" would have been something Nirvana would have covered. Pretty sure they had me at the first track. I like how a lot of the songs blend into each other. The term for this band is "aggro punk,"which is an interesting blend of ideas. The idea of punk (to me) implies the songs should be a bit shorter. But the electronica side makes the songs stretch out a bit, like in "Getting Bright At Night", which I really could hear the Nine Inch Nails influence coming out. Overall, I enjoyed it. Is it derivative of other bands? I can't really say, but the influence of some of them was fairly obvious. Top tracks: "Up Against The Wall Motherf***er," "Kiss Like Lizards," "White Devil," Getting Bright at Night"

Sick album. Love this.

Engelske Ivar Nikolaisen. 3,5/5

Wasn’t expecting to like this, but I enjoyed several songs quite a bit. As an album, it felt a little long

On the one hand, not really sure what this album has done to deserve inclusion. I think The Icarus Line drifted into insignificance without actually making any lasting impact on music. On the other hand, I thought it was pretty great so I'm not too bothered. Very typical of a lot of the early/mid-00s garage punk stuff but there's some mild experimentation that separates it from the obvious comparisons to the likes of Jet and BRMC. The long, dark centrepiece, 'Getting Bright At Night' shows they had some ideas above their station, which I can respect. I think the editor took a punt on what might turn out to be of lasting significance. They may have missed on that front here but for me at least, it’s something I’d never have found and am glad I did. Really enjoyed it.

Albums like this are why I do this list. Never heard of this group, but I really enjoyed listening to this album. I liked the distortion and edge, angry and noisy, like if grunge and punk had a really loud kid. Excellent album.

More hard rock album than alternative, in my opinion. Slight rounding up.

I think it's pretty good. It's definitely reminiscent of the early aughts vibe of Jet, The Vines, Kaiser Chiefs, The Strokes, etc. I'm going to give it a 4, which I feel might be half a star too high, but I've had an AWFUL 2 weeks, and I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to hear something that isn't 80s pop or 70s rock.

Maybe the first album so far that's really about what I'm about, but it's still not quite there. Three and one half out of five

A really fun album. That energy that you only get from noise rock bands. It can drag just a little. But overall a good album. Added it to my collection.

Had a hard time listening to this bc it’s not on Spotify and the YouTube clips are microwave quality, but man!!! What an amazing sound! This is what indie should strive to be Fave: Up against the wall

Man - so good. Going to have to add these guys into my rotation!!

Really enjoyed, getting bright at night jumped out, will defo be checking out more from the artist

New to me. Totally engaged. Aggressively poetic (the best way to be poetic and rock). Yeah the songs blend but so what, the caterwauling vocals belong together with the scalding guitar and lyrics that have the poetry of hip-hop. Getting Bright at Night is an EP unto itself and a microcosm of the Soiree. Worth the price of admission.

Hell yeah. This is a great blend of punk attitude and noisy rock that sounds genuinely off the rails. I bought every minute of it. Great riffs, crunchy recording, this gave me a boost.

This was also pretty fun. Like a little weaker almost as good jack white project

Up Against The Wall Motherfucker // On The Lash // Kiss Like Lizards // Getting Bright At Night //

New band to me, but not sure how I missed them at the time. Noisy and fun, and I liked the vocalist. Stand out track at first listen is ‘Spike Island’ but most of it kept me really interested. Deserves a 2nd listen to see if it’s a grower. It’s probably a high 3, but I’m optimistic I’m going to enjoy this band so will give it a 4 for an impressive first impression.

Didn't know what to expect from this but I enjoyed it. How have I gone 20 years without hearing it?

4/5. I think it was good? But overall I don't think I liked it. Hardcore garage rock that is catchy and well-written but don't think I like this as much as I thought I would. Nevermind, mid writing this review I listened to Getting Bright At Night and that was awesome. As the album went on, I kind of got the vibe it was going for and now I want to re-listen with that in mind. The main issue is that it can be a little jarring with so much noise but it does break it up sometimes with some softer openings or more riffs than just noise. Overall, once I got past the jarring energy, I was with it. Best Song: Big Sleep, Getting Bright At Night, Virgin Velcro

I've never heard about these dudes in my life (and judging from the Spotify numbers, never will again), which is wild, since they're right up my alley. Truly fun album to listen.

Goes hard. As someone who doesn't listen to a lot of rock, this was a great listen. Big crashing drums, big guitar lines that went in really unexpected directions, and love Joe Cardamone's voice.

Never heard of this band before, for some reason, so no expectations going in. I ended up liking it quite a bit. It's a bit like Jesus and Mary Chain meets Big Black with a little Pavement thrown in. Solid.

Good sound, It remembers me to the smashing pumpkins

this slapped. vive la mid 2000s

Never heard of these guys! But they're great. Absolutely great. From the jump they just EXPLODE with energy. The production and mixing on the record is stellar. The bass thunders and the drums punch without any of the weird hollow flatness that's started to pervade a lot of modern rock records. The only problem with this album is shared by Royal Blood and Mammoth WVH. Every song is a banger, but EVERY song is a banger, so a whole album of them one after another gets fairly tiring, even though each song individually is genuinely spectacular.

Nice little album

A solid heavy rock album

Enjoyed this. Will listen to more.

Listen, I liked this. But I recognize why this didn’t break out in 2004 and has to settle for critical praise. It’s not that different from most of the garage and dance rock we were getting in this era. I’m thinking Louis XIV, We Are Scientists or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. This album is crying out for 1 or 2 radio singles. If it had at least 1 I would be giving this 5 stars. Alas, 4 is all you’re getting

Not bad. Some tracks rock hard. 🤘🏼

Very nice rock album.

AIka hyvä garagelevy! 4/5

McLusky vibes at it's best

Feel like we haven’t gotten other rock like this through 1001 yet. Reminded me of Jane’s addiction

This is a real deep cut from the 1001 Albums book, but I guess this random ass band still has people listening to their album more than the myriad of other garage punk bands from 2004. This was pretty cool though, I'm glad I heard it. Yeah it sounds like The Vines or White Stripes at times, but there's also a darker edge to it that's pretty cool (that one track Meatmaker literally sounds like a Suicide song). I'd come back to this. 3.5/5

solid album from start to finish. garage rock reminiscent of jack white. highlights: “up against the wall motherfuckers” “caviar” “kiss like lizards”

Post hardcore crossed with a bit of Queens of the Stone Age. Excellent vocals and band sounds amazing as a whole. Not heard of this band, but it rocks.

Really enjoyed this album. Everything was on point and really engaging and fun to listen to. Will most definitely listen again. The vocal performance was really emotional and kept me hooked in. The band were amazing and together it just worked so well. I can't wait to keep listening to this album, it isn't a genre I usually listen to but this might be the start of my journey into it.

Really good

Interesting find - not the most remarkable of records and gets a bit samey by the end but one I’d like to explore further

Good listen, interesting sound.

Pretty good! Grimy, grinding rock and roll shifting back and forth in intensity. Probably won't seek out more but I enjoyed it.

The first half of this album was alright, a solid 6/10. The second half however was in my opinion way better, 8/10. I like harder rock but this was definitely a great listen. Complete album : 7/10

Not bad.

Surprisingly small band to make this list. Seemed like some classic rock/metal with maybe some emo influences in tone and lyrics? Overall a fan!

Better than I expected. Reminds me of Filter put in a blender with Zeppelin

Tasty.

Franchement cool, j'ai bien aimé caviar et spike island il me semble !

Unexpectedly enjoyable. It's on the right side of noise for me. A good wall of sound with melody still coming through. Very good album.

This was a hard one to find. I resorted to a youtube playlist that a fan had created in the end. At the start I was excited to what appeared to be a post hardcore band in the same vein as At The Drive In. Its not though. There's flashes of brilliance in here, but the album meanders around a bit, seemingly trying to find a direction. I wouldn't call it exceptional, but there's enough to get me to go check out what else they have done. On subsequent listens it gets better and I find myself liking it quite a lot.

Well that was a nice surprise, never heard of them before. This is my kind of rock music, the kind that prefers being loud and aggressive and maybe a little sloppy, instead of sounding pristine and perfect. Love the singer's energy, fits it perfectly. Good entry. (Just looked and of course it has a 2.5 rating, you people suck)

Not really my thing but I can tell it’s good if it’s your thing

Fun and lively post punk album!

Just not my vibe. Great for someone that likes this genre.

4.5 stars. This album gets after it. A little muddled and overly distorted at times, but for the most part it's just really good rowdy post-hardcore. Starting with "Spike Island" it takes off, and the standout is "Getting Bright At Night".

Lots of aggressive noise on this album but the band excels at controlled chaos. Unlike a lot of noise rock or hardcore bands, where a certain amount of guitar feedback and sloppiness feels improvised, these guys sound like they’re very deliberate behind the boards. They deploy the screeches and feedback right where they want them. That feeling of being carefully put together is probably a result of the songwriting too. A lot of this music is dense and layered. I hear a Rolling Stones influence on a bunch of songs. Joe Cardamone’s vocals often sound like Mick Jagger. The band even sounds a little like Zeppelin on “Virgin Velcro.” It’s a potent combination: ‘fuck you’ hardcore noise + smart songwriting and musicianship + rockstar showmanship. Excellent album.

Really liked this, I assumed with the album cover and song names this would be very heavy metal, but it was actually pretty chill.

Thought this was really quite good! Rock on!

Another band I'd never heard of before that I enjoyed. This was a tiny bit too derivative in places, but overall I liked it very much. Definitely on my list to relisten now, as there were a few stand out parts here and there. Nothing too grating and no weak tracks that I noticed on one play through, although there were a few "this is too angst" moments maybe. Will get 4 stars for not being perfection, but good enough for another spin. Bonus points for Spotify playing The Fall "Green Eyed Loco Man" after the album completed, which I took as a good sign, helped me place when this album first came out, and did indeed have some similarities.

This album took me until about halfway through to really start to get it, and at that point I started it again and listened with fresh ears. I think this one is easy to miss, since it sounds generic at first, like a less poppy version of The Strokes. However, there's a lot more progression in these songs than in Strokes songs (also, these songs are not blatantly ripped off of very famous songs the way most of the Stokes big hits were). 4/5 This album definitely sounds like it was made in the mid 00s, but there's a lot more depth to the music than I initially perceived. Sort of a hidden gem in an incredibly bleak period for rock

Aaron North makes every note chaos in the best way here. As he always does. This album is sloppy and it is barely holding together. And that is the genius of it. Not many hooks or traditional riffs. Just wild punk rock played with the energy of the sun.

Noisy rock, but fun to listen to. I had not heard this one before, but I will make sure it gets on my rotation.

Enjoyed much more than expected for mid-2000s. This is more like a high 3-low 4 but still. Pretty cool.

8/10 really good stuff here very enjoyable

Kind of close to what I normally listen to, and I think I heard their name before, but first time checking them out. Another really solid record, gotta listen to it more.

Never heard of this band. I liked it!

Surprised Iv never come across this band or album before. This is right up my street. Straight into my rotation.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Caviar, Big sleep

Much better than I thought it would be, sounds like a classic rock band

Literally never heard of The Icarus Line outside of this project, which is a bit weird. Yeah, I dig it - very chaotic garagey post-hardcore. Enjoyed it enough for three listens, and would happily go back for more! Fave track - "Getting Bright at Night" is a banger - especially the last third. "Meatmaker" is slavish Suicide worship, and I'm on board for it!

When this album was selected for me, I never heard of this band before or this album. Any details in regard to their background was scarce and so I went into this with blindfolds on and was just ready to take what was given. That being said, this is actually a pretty good record, albeit on the more raucous side of the equation. The Icarus Line do the best that they can in these balls to the wall, relentless fifty-three minutes, one minute dishing out two minute appetizers like it was nothing and the next minute delivering a nine minute epic as though they knew how to trek Mt. Olympus. All in all, don't turn up your nose when given this album: you may never know what you'll like. Favorites: Up Against the Wall, Motherfuckers, On the Lash, Caviar, Spike Island, Getting Bright at Night, Virgin Velcro, Seasick, Party the Baby Off.

I like noisy, but it's a bit too under-produced here. Real chunky riffs and jams tho.

sounds a bit like a lot of bands i like and it works. heavy, noisy and messy, i bet these were good live.

I was prepared for some more underwhelming 2000s picks from Bob but this is pretty gnarly. Nice one :)

Bra oväsen! Gillar produktionen

I didn’t know anything about this band. I haven’t heard their name before. It was an interesting experience listening to this album. It is abrasive, energetic, passionate, with a compelling production and lots of ideas floating around. I think I need to go back a give it another listenings to better understand it. It seems to have more layers for me to discover, but I am no there yet.

Yes, very repetitive, but, a very enjoyable album as well.

This one caught me by surprise. Some very creative, slightly progressive, punk. I'll be revisiting it

i wish i’d heard this when it was released because it would’ve really rung my bell

Albums like these are what I expected this list to be.

Dig the distortion

This was something a bit more up my alley! I quite liked this mix of alternative and garage rock with some noise mixed in, though some of the noisier tracks were a bit difficult to listen to at parts. Favourite: Kiss Like Lizards

Gave me White Stripes vibes. I actually enjoyed quite a bit considering it was so random and unknown. 4.5

It grew on me as I listened. Brings me back to high school for sure.

Another first. Good times. The sort of rock I used to love but don't listen to anymore.

These are the albums that make this whole project worth it for me - had never heard of this band before, but love this absolutely thrashing, nasty, guitar-whirlwind of an LP. The runtime may be a bit long for how many melodic ideas it has to offer, but what it lacks in creativity this album more than makes up for in energy. While it has a solid blues-rock basis, there are a few left-turn zigzags into weird chords or rhythms that keep the listener on their toes and make this an exciting trainwreck-in-motion of a listen.

This isn’t bad at all… heard their name but never knowingly heard their music. Enjoyed it!

Loved it. Super dark and gritty. Never heard of this band before!

I've always wondered how did punk evolved into post-punk. Now, I know. This 2000's garage rock bit topped with layers of noise seems to answer my questions. It's harsh and angsty, like punk, and wooshy, like post-punk. Too much noise and too loud, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Had never heard of this group but this was a great listen. May relisten to decide whether to add to the usual rotation.

I'd never heard of this band before, but was pleasantly surprised - in turns grungy, rock, metal, melodic, noisy... I could really see myself finding more and more to like about this album if I give it a few more listens.

Rock garaje alternativa. Interesante

Angst factor 11 and rising. This is ultimate screamo from a band that can play. A whole album becomes repetitive. Will still listen again, however.

Noise/garage rock the brings up tastes of Black Flag and Iggy. Hooky, noise and all around enjoyable.

I had my doubts in the beginning but i ended up reallly enjoying this album!

Fun dark alternative rock.

This was pretty cool. Never heard of this band before and I'm really glad they were on this list. Not sure if they'd make my list of top 1001 albums, but was glad to be introduced to an interesting sound.

Never heard of these guys before but they did great guitary post-rock

In general, I’m not a fan of noise rock, but this wasn’t bad! Garage rock? Liked the vocals and catchy riffs. 4

really appreciated this album. nice. punchy. punky. low-fi. goodness.

surprisingly good , punky and shouty. will listen to more of their stuff

I like the vocals and more downtempo tracks a lot. A little bogged down by the noisy stuff.

Bra jävla ös här.

This is pretty much exactly what I want rock music to sound like

This band reminded me of an amalgamation of a bunch if different bands. This album was very good, I really enjoyed it!

Never heard them before but really liked it. Will give this band further listens in the future.

i may listen to it again later, it was fine.

insane pull for the list but like.......they were kind of onto something here! anything can be party music if it's about partying! that long song kicks ass!

It's alright.

Did I need to hear this? Maybe, maybe not. But it wasn't horrible.

Initial impressions: a poor man's Shellac; sub-par At The Drive In; Jesus Lizard's younger, disappointing brothers; an unfunny Killdozer; grunge, but gone mouldy 15 years after the event. Hmmm, I've heard thousands of records like this. Not sure what makes it stand out from any of the above, more talented noisy bastards. I think you had to be in the moshpit to have fond memories of this. Merely okay.

Yet again this list churns out another artist I have never heard of. In places, it was an enjoyable listen with hints of Royal Blood and Mudhoney. Decent music, but I really didn’t like the vocals, it doesn’t seem to match the vibe. I guess this one may grow on me with more listens.

Like a grungier White Stripes with none of the catchiness. Might be a high 2, low 3 but my expectations were low so grading up for today.

I only recognize this artist's name, and I don't believe I know any of their songs. So this is my first time listening to the artist and to this album start-to-finish. I kind of like the noisiness of this, and the riffs are pretty solid. I'm not sure I enjoy the vocalist's style. This might require a few more listens for me to decide whether I like it or not, but I'm also not sure I feel compelled to listen to it again. This isn't bad, but it's also hard to rate on only one listen. I'll add this to my list of albums to listen to again, but with a note that I was uncertain about it.

(Decent 6/10) I don't like being that guy, but this is basically Iggy Pop but 2004. The production is pretty good, but I really couldn't find myself to feel compelled by the vocals or the songwriting for the most part. The times this record shines for me is when it tows the line between sasscore and noise rock, "Kiss Like Lizards" for instance. The album also takes lots of cues from 60's garage psych and the second half of the record really digs deep into it. Which would be neat, but honestly I can't help but feel like this sounds like Jet but messier and noisier. There's aspects to this record I find interesting but overall it really failed to captivate me beyond the first handful of songs.

NHB. Not bad

Could not listen on vacation, will listen later

Ok - not really my thing, heavy guitar and angry singing

I love when I get something I’ve never heard of at all like this. Noisy garage rock, I’m down with that. But by the end it wore on me, a bit too much classic rock in there for me.

Ehhhh… ok

They make a good sound but they don't use it to their advantage. Some of this album I liked but a lot of it was just noise. 3½

Odd but ok

fun album. It’s like a less grungy discount Nirvana.

Jack white if he has had no slept for 3 days -The angry stripes

Seemed pretty average?

Kind of reminded me of white stripes and black keys but if both of those groups were way more self serious. The production was interesting. It felt like they were bursting through the speaker. Still, nothing stood out to me.

Pretty solid album from a band I'd never heard of before. A bit too much "noise" for my taste to hold me through an entire album, but man, I've heard worse on this project. There's some nice fuzz and hard guitars. Penance Soiree gets better as it goes on. I was skeptical after the first couple tracks but the album ends strong. I added a couple bangers to a playlist. Standouts are "Getting Bright at Night" "Seasick" and "Party the Baby Off." A pretty decent 3/5 for me. Prooooobably won't check out any more of these guys, but definitely wouldn't turn away if I heard more.

A weak attempt to be like other bands with more talent.

This album was very 'Mechanical Animals'-era Marilyn Manson with a hint of Queens of the Stone Age. I hadn't heard of them before and enjoyed this morning's listen!

Oh my {edge}lordy! I actually didn't mind it, felt a bit like if Marilyn Manson joined The White Stripes?

Never have heard of The Icarus Line. If there was a 3.5 I’d give it. Definitely intrigued , didn’t want to get over my skies but loved what I heard. Need a couple more listens

More musically interesting than the typical hipster slag.

This album is decent but I have no idea what it's doing on this list. 3.3/5

quite fun,if not a bit lack lustre

i’ve heard better noise rock albums before 3/5

This grew on me, although I didn't care for the guys voice.

Not a bad album. I definitely see the inspiration they received from The White Stripes and The Strokes. Doesn’t really do anything new, but it is underrated considering the band has only 1500 listeners on Spotify. I enjoyed it but it’s not really my thing.

Música de menu de winning eleven. Mas sem ser inesquecível.

I am not sure why I have never heard of this band. It seems when the Screamo-rock period hit in the early 2000s they would have risen to the top of the Pool. I think, from the Wikipedia page, that the constant band member changes probably made them unpredictable and hard to book. But the music is good, a cross between My Chemical Romance, early adopts and INXS. Key songs for me include Seasick with the slower plodding rock and tortured vocals, and On the Lash with its wall of sounds and in-your-face attitude. This is definitely a listen again and explore more.

There’s some stuff on this list so far that i kinda struggle to see it’s place for and this is one of those. No doubt passable but nothing came off too groundbreaking to me, and a lot of this record kind of blends together.

1001 albums to hear before you die 77# yeah.. this isn't worth it. The mix is not good. I like the noisy parts, but it's all so muffled it's almost shoegaze without wanting to be. Good riffs, mid vocal performance. This feels Jack White vibes all over. Never listened to a full album of White stripes but i feel it'll be better than this. Even though i like the sound of the guitars and the guitar playing too. It's raw, loose, whiny.

Incredibly generic.

raaaaah

it was okay but not my type shi

I throughly enjoyed this album by The Icarus Line! I’d never heard or listened to them before so that was fun to acquaint myself with a new band. Overall, I enjoyed this alt-rock/punk album and I would listen to it again in the future!

Liked some of it on the first half of the album, then it started to drag a bit. Some good energy, but not much substance overall. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

It was decent

Youtube

not bad

Not the worst thing I've heard on this list, but the singers voice kind of gets on my nerves.

Not as bad as some reviews here make it sound.

Unexpectedly rips! Never even heard of this band but I dig it

A bit like a pick and mix there’s bits and pieces of lots of things here. Garage rock, the stooges, 80’s UK post punk. Some great guitar playing and sonic youth style noise top it off. However, it’s not massively coherent and I’m not always convinced. That said it’s enjoyable enough but not hugely consequential

nothing stood out

Generic noisey rock album. It had good moments but none of the songs really stood out.

It's fine, but I don't know why its on the list. Pretty standard post punk/garage rock from the era, with that wall of bass sound that was everywhere at the time.

Seasick favorite song. Heavy alt early 2000's rock. Worth a relisten at some point.

Triple blind here. An obscure pull from the mid-2000’s “cock rock/butt rock” genre. Not bad if that’s what you’re into, but not noteworthy from what I could tell.

I thought this was related to Jack White somehow. The white stripes aren't my cup of tea, and neither was this, But I can't say it's terrible either

its probably 50/50 whether the fact that i just cant detect any distinct personality on this at all is the fault of the music or me just being unfair. my main cogent thought was just "yea, i guess some of these post-strokes post-white stripes garagey bands Would be interested in doing sonic youth worship." its moody and grimey and sloppy and not bad to listen to but it rly just slipped immediately off my ears. sonic youth were elemental forces of nature, the strokes and the stripes felt like actual people, this just feels like a Loud Rock Band to me. most memorable track is prob just the two minute tossoff where they actually try some synths

My rating 2.8 The first song puts you off but the rest of the album is worth a listen.

It's the total opposite end of the popularity spectrum from yesterday. This band has thousands of monthly listeners. Big Sleep was pretty good, altogether, it is surprising to me that this album has lived in obscurity. It's too good to be so unknown. It's not the best album of all time, but it hits above its weight-class.

This is the difference between salt and pepper. I know pepper is key in some dishes, but salt just has so much more impact. It blasts my taste buds and enhances flavors from savory to sweet. Pepper is pepper. I like it, I just don't love it.

I enjoyed parts of it but it generally felt like a hard rock wash to me. 5/10

Interesting hard rock album. Most of it was hit or miss for me, but enjoyed some of the tracks. Highlights: "Caviar" and "Spike Island"

Didn't love it, didn't hate it.

It was alright, a perfect 3 star album. Nothing amazing, but I enjoyed listening to it. I don't think I will re-listen to this one though because I would rather listen to Bleach by Nirvana or The White Stripes debut that I feel have a similar vibe. This is probably the favorite band of one of the book editors. Favorite Track - Party the Baby Off Least Favorite Track - Meatmaker ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I don't think it's that bad, but apparently it shouldn't be on this list.

3.1 2x

It’s like a mix between indie garage and hardcore. It’s cool at times and obviously these dudes never would’ve broken through to the mainstream but a rockin’ album nonetheless.

decent

A middle of the road 3 for me

Cositas de White Stripes, The Dead Weather y demás proyectos de Jack White. Cositas más hard rock / rock alternativo tipo Foo Fighters o The Vines. 6/10

First entry for Noise rock on the list and this is not the best start. The rock itself is very standard stuff. Like the middling parts of a soundtrack from the Burnout franchise. Except there's an added layer of noise on the top that really does help it in any regard really. It's not the worst thing in the world its just very repetitive and confusingly mediocre to be here. I really don't have much to say about this album it didn't offend me nor interest me. Ultimately made me feel "meh" and not much else.

In my head these were more chaotic noise rock but this is somewhere between a grimier Stones, didn't like it as much as I'd hoped

When I was a teenager I think i would have found this self-indulgent moaning profound. Not so much now, but still enjoyed it.

Only solid and probably shouldn't be on this list

This was a grungier knockoff of the White Stripes. Some of it was pretty good

Pleasantly noisy. You can feel that Strokes-era energy.

I cannot believe I didn’t hate this but I did not. It’s like dirtier strokes or the white stripes

The album sounded a bit generic. Some songs were really solid.

Not bad, but nothing special. I had never heard of this band before.

It is not a great sign that (due to my own failure to make sure the looping feature was on) i failed to notice when this album ended. Overall, I like the sound! Would not mind listening to it again! It's just not really clicking 🤷‍♂️

I first listened to this album as I struggled to get A Ranks in Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. I listened again on a walk around my apartment complex. With the prominently black and red cover art, heavily distorted rock sound, and youthfully emotive male vocals, I can't help but compare this album to the work of another early 2000s rock band, The White Stripes. To be clear, The Icarus Line are doing more here than merely being clones of The White Stripes, leaning into a further level of distortion and heaviness than I would expect from Jack and Meg. This is also the first time on this list where the device on which I listened to this album drastically changed my perception of it; while I appreciated many of the grating and distorted soundscapes they created throughout this album on my first listen, sometimes they pushed the limits just too far to the point that I lost track of what I was hearing or it started to sting my ears. However, when I relistened to the album on headphones as opposed to our bluetooth speakers, it clarified some of the experience for me and allowed me to gain a better appreciation for the flow and atmosphere of the album. I really respect the chaotic energy and consistent sound curated across the album, and while some moments still don't grab me too strongly, the songwriting elsewhere is incredibly compelling and keeps me deeply invested in the experience of this album... when I could properly hear it. Highlights: Spit On It, On the Lash, Spike Island, Getting Bright At Night, Big Sleep, Seasick, Party the Baby Off

Penance Soiree is a pretty decent Noise/Garage rock album that remains consistent throughout most songs, and that consistency made me feel a little bored halfway through, although I still did enjoy it to some extent. 3.7/5

Wasn't as bad as others are making out (not to me anyway)

Litt nice egentlig

Don't hate this. Won't be listening again though. 5/10 so rounds up.

3 spaced out

Post-hardcore punk amplified by metal noise, distorted guitar, and powerful vocals.

Band and album I had never heard of in a genre I like. It was good! I liked the sludgy elements added into that early 2000’s garage rock sound. Favorite songs were Up Against The Wall Motherfucker, On The Lash, Getting Bright At Night, and Seasick.
