Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Ok album but a bit punky for me

It’s OK, when they let things like melody and song structure shine through it’s actually quite good but too often it gets a bit tuneless in the name of being a bit hard edged. 3

When it's good, it's really good. First five songs are great, but the album becomes a bit messy with noisy chaos instead of the songs and hooks that make it good to start with.

Pretty good, maybe yet again not memorable but overall I lied it. I'd say 3.5

average. bit too samey towards the end lowkey

I both enjoyed this album and was frustrated by it. On the positive side, the raw energy is undeniable. The band fully commits to a hardcore-leaning garage rock sound, built on thick, grimy riffs that feel more thrown than carefully placed, which only adds to the album’s confrontational edge. The vocals are passionately angry rather than polished; snarled, barked, and often deliberately abrasive. It reinforces the sense that this music isn’t meant to comfort or impress, but to provoke. The near-total lack of fine tuning, whether in the performances or the production, feels intentional rather than careless, giving the record an almost live, on-the-edge quality. That roughness perfectly complements the anti-establishment themes running throughout the tracklist, making the album feel less like a collection of songs and more like a sustained act of defiance. The lyrics lack subtlety, but that's by design. Spitting on society and the music industry, observations on over indulgences of life's pleasures, calling out the superficial glamour of LA life, themes of dysfunctional intimacy and need, commentaries on destructive behaviour and people with toxic traits, being caught up things you don't want but can't shake. It's a middle finger to social constructs and contracts; and thematically the band keep this up with such conviction that you can't help but respect it. On the more negative side, the album feels much longer than it should. And, speaking strictly from a musicality aspect, it can get repetitive and the songs really start to blend in together. There's virtually no variety on display, and things never seem to slow down or speed up. So this is where my frustration with it popped up. I often think albums like this need a good bit of trimming. For example: I got Slayer's album 'Reign in Blood' on this project a little while ago, which I gave a 5/5 rating to, and it clocks in at just under 30 minutes; whereas if it was around the length of this LP (54minutes) I probably would have given it a lower rating. There's certainly enough here that I enjoyed it enough; protest anthems with unapologetic conviction? Yes! Sign me up. But 'Penance Soiree' is just a little bit hard to listen to as an entire body of work. Maybe that's by design. There are certainly similar and better albums I could probably stack beside this one. It is still worth diving into, though. 3/5

Not what I was expecting. Didn't listen to it all. Maybe it got better?

Are they trying to break the Guinness World Record for loudest garage rock? The Sonics beat them to it. This record sounds like easy listening metal as one reviewer put it. There's a bit of punk in there too, but it's nothing too interesting.

Just generally not feeling this one. It feels if the White Stripes were a noise rock band, but more on the classic blues rock sound vs White Stripes' alternative side. And I'm pretty bored with that classic blues rock sound. Singer sound's like the singer from Jet as well (Or one of those late 2000's garage rock bands), and while I do like Are You Gonna Be My Girl?, it's not a voice I am really enamored with here. Overally, this is generally just fine, but this is definitely an album I'd drop from the list for a more important/influential/better album.

Album #1,014 Noisy, industrial, and grungy. The singer sounds like the singer for Jet ("Are You Gonna Be My Girl"). Some cool songs like Spike Island, but also sounds that are just shrill and unpleasant to the ear.

It was iight, bass lines were more than iight. 2.9

This is so close to a lot of music I love from the same time but the mix is so bad and it feels like it’s trying so hard to be like an innovative loud take on the white stripes and queens or something; lot of Jet but louder here. Even worse, it sounds like the proto of every 2013 on “we’re keeping rock and roll alive!!!” Band ala rival sons or royal blood. Just like obnoxious two note riffs held out while drums go nuts type music. At The Drive In just does it better. Idk there’s a lot I love here, this would undoubtedly go hard as an opener for any of the above that I wasn’t expecting but then I would go home and listen to the album and be like oh never mind. It’s good, truly; I think in a different mood this is a 4 but I’m hitting a stagnant 3.

"Penance Soiree" by "The Icarus Line" was an album that immediately challenged my expectations. Judging by the cover alone, I was anticipating something closer to electronic or techno (shoutout to Moby), so the actual sound came as a surprise. I'd never heard of the band before, but I wasn't put off by that going in. Musically, there are clear similarities to bands like "The White Stripes" or even "Rollins Band", though it's harder to pin down a single genre- garage rock or post-hardcore probably comes closest. The songs tend to blur together a bit and can feel somewhat monotone, but despite that, I could see myself returning to this album at some point. It's not an everyday listen, and I'd need to be in the right mood for it, but it held my interest enough to warrant that.

Idk pretty mid. I’m in a sleep deprived, overworked and angry mood because of it, so this album fits the vibe. But the harsh sounds legit hurt my ears wtf, I don’t like that. Seems like a blend of Queens of the Stone Age and NIN which is sorta neat. Nothing stood out to me as a banger. Probably won’t listen to this album or artist again tbh. Couldn’t make it through the last 2 songs I had enough. 2.75/5

Not as bad as the 1 star reviews claim. It's not offensive, pretty punchy rock music with some interesting segments.

you're probably thinking the same thing I did: "who the hell are The Icarus Line?" well, despite their current status—inactive since 2017 following the death of a key member, and currently sitting at fewer than 1,500 monthly Spotify listeners—I was surprised to find that a lot of critics were very positive about this album when it first released. you can check Wikipedia if you don't believe me; 4.5/5 from Allmusic, 4/5 from Alternative Press 7.8/10 from Pitchfork (huge numbers to get from them in 2004), and a perfect 10/10 from Drowned in Sound. so, to what do we attribute The Icarus Line's niche status in rock music: a band significant enough to be included in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (right next to Arcade Fire's Funeral in my copy, by the way) but one which has otherwise been forgotten by the vast majority of rock fans? well, while I do think this band makes a great noise when they really get going—seriously, this album is really loud—I feel a bit like I've been hung out to dry by the songs themselves. they're serviceable, but most of them aren't terribly memorable. you've got the opener, which is memorable by virtue of being the first song you hear; there's the very punchy "Spike Island" and the 9-minute mammoth "Getting Bright at Night", which goes through a ton of interesting dynamic phases; but beyond that, a lot of the material here feels a bit redundant. there's some additional sonic experiments towards the back half of the record (the saxophone on "White Devil", all the electronics on "Meatmaker") but by that point it's too little, too late. there were a lot of bands making this sort of bluesy, noisy garage rock at the time and delivering better songs alongside it; The White Stripes had released Elephant the previous year, and Death From Above 1979 would release their tremendous debut a few months after Penance Soirée. it's a little unfortunate; with stickier melodies and riffs alongside the (admittedly really interesting) barrages of noise The Icarus Line cook up, this could've been more than just a footnote. decent 6/10.

Många feta riff tbh och bra vocals. Inte riktigt en 4a men bättre än en 3a också. Slutgiltig dom: 3.7.

up against the wall motherfucker garage rock 2004 united states

7 What are they shouting for so much!

Oasis meets Jane's Addiction. Solid but not exceptional or outstanding.

Fun album! (3)

This a pretty energetic and heavy post-punky sort of sound. Very much of its time. Perhaps I'll play this a few more times - I quite enjoyed it though it doesn't sound wildly original to me.

I didn't dislike this as much as I thought I would. Post-hardcore (good gosh there's too many genres) is a flavor of music I don't really care much for. But the harder punk elements and dirty production mixed with some more palatable. That said, I hesitate to say I like it. It's just not really for me. It's a fine 3/5.

RAWK! One gets the immediate sense that this band needs to be seen live. It's an amalgam of Stooges attitude and energy with notes of grunge and early 2000s stoner rock. Overall a fun and engaging record that I'm glad I was exposed to. But not something I would put on any "great records" list, including this one.

Needs a few listens to appreciate, at times felt repetitive but every so often there's great bits to catch your attention.

316/1089 - I can't tell if the book shits the bed in the 21st century or if the internet + streaming + telecommunications act of 1996 + poptimism really did that much damage to cool stuff in mainstream music. At least I actively look for modern music I like and find it but a lot if people today are stuck in their nostalgia-spirals. Anyways, this was very average noisy garage rock.

The sleaziest Indie sleaze I've ever heard

Penance Soirée is a good album. Post-punk/hardcore. It’s loud and raw. I personally liked the middle of the best with Spike Island, Getting Brighter at Night and Big Sleep being the highlights but over all the album is a bit too long at 54 mins. It should be noted that The Icarus Line is just a poor man’s Death From Above and the lack of Canadian music on here is borderline offensive. If DFA was from LA, they’d have multiple albums on here. 7.8/10

Was this really good or am I just starved for any distortion at all? Call that the Sonic Youth effect.

Nasty rock very emblematic of early 2000s

Not for me, but not a bad album

Some good headbangin' moments....some not so good, drawn out moments. It was okay.

Solid album. On my first listen most of this was kind of meh, but it was growing on me by the last few songs. So I listened to the album again. It’s straight forward, noisy, heavy, sleazy rock. Nothing amazing, but I like their sound overall.

No idea how this band passed me by at the time. It is fairly forgettable I guess so maybe they just disappeared from my memory

Ok album. No reason to be on here.

OK post-hardcore.

A product of the early 2000s garage rock movement. I appreciate for what it is. There’s some songs that are rough on the ears for me. This was going to be a 2 star after the first couple of tracks but then there would be something to pull me back in.

It’s quite okay - noisy but still okay. Too bad I can’t listen to this on Spotify but have to listen on Youtube

nice. very in line with my taste. standout tracks for me: - kiss like lizards - getting bright at night - virgin velcro - seasick

Strokes-y, but sometimes better (and sometimes worse). Still a great record that I had never heard of.

First listen

Best Song: Up Against The Wall Motherfucker. Compared to some of the other songs on the album, this one actually had some dynamism; it wasn't full speed all the time. Worst Song: Meatmaker. What in the Guantanamo Bay is this torture music? It sounds like there's several alarms going in the background. Overall: Sounds like a dozen other bands. It's not bad, it's just forgettable, and feels a bit generic to that early 00's indie rock sound.

Not bad at all. Not currently my thing, but this reminded of the hard indie/alt rock scene if the early 00's from whenst it came. Idek if they make actual new rock music anymore.

This wasn’t as bad as I feared. It definitely sounds of its era, and the lead singer has that bored rockstar drawl. There’s a lot of alt rock that sounds like a lame version of this (e.g. Black Keys, Cage The Elephant) and people love that stuff. At least this goes hard.

Would give this 3.5 if i could. Got a good groove when it gets going!

Sounds like a supergroup with the members of Jet and Cage the Elephant. Has all the raw power of such a collaboration, but is lacking in clear focus or sheer hit-making ability. Some great moments (the drumming on “Big Sleep,” for example), but not consistent enough to merit a 4.

I had only ever heard of these guys and I liked a lot of it, but it lost me after a while. Seemed like the same old trope the whole way through and I started to cringe a bit. But really, not bad at all.

Forgettable noughts rock, presumably on a label owned a friend of the lists author

Much better than I thought. A good loud album.

This was loud and noisy, interesting in parts but pretty dull in others. All in all, not terrible but wouldn't choose to listen again

Not bad, but it just sounds like every other American punk band

Missed these guys. Take the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Idles, Frank Black and mix them all together and this is what you got. The music sounds like the cover art. Interesting but not something I could play every day.

Never heard of this band but I thought they were a pretty good rock/metal band/grunge band. Good guitar and the singer had a good voice.

This is fine but not really for me. Better than yet more early english rock though.

Is definitely above other noisy rocky punky albums of its kind. But ultimately not my genre exactly - might require relistens to fully appreciate

This album is borderline an assault on the ears. The aggressive guitars, hazy vocals and heavy drums make for an absolute bombardment of feral punk rock. There are so many really strong moments here but the hour long album lacks diversity or any moments of change, leaving it feel samey as you get towards the latter half of the album.

Never heard of this band but I guess they were pretty big at the time and were post-hardcore adjacent? They did a split with Ink & Dagger? Okay, sure. There's a couple of good songs here but this is just a bit boring. Like if someone who was in The Dandy Warhols got really into noise punk for a bit. It's fine, but the songs drag on and have no point, and I feel like that clashes with this style of more 'aggressive' music. Wish I liked this more because I'm starved for something in this list that's more in the vein of the style of noise rock/post-hardcore I really like but this was just decent.

There's a very cool album somewhere in there, and yeah, it's probably somewhere between Royal Blood and The White Stripes with a hint of something else, but then once every few minutes it goes totally edgelord for the sake of it and it gets hard to listen to.

Honestly this one hurt my ears sometimes, but it was also pretty cool.

Every track is the same, distorted. The lead vocal helps keep the band together. The sound does grow on you.

Half decent garage rock.

Started off a little too garage rock for me but turned into some real cathartic dissonance near the end

Sweet! An album I’ve never heard from a band I’ve heard about for a long time! I honestly was a little underwhelmed. The first half of the album is just okay hard rock, the songs were forgettable for me. The second half of the album gets a little more experimental and definitely benefits from it. “Getting Bright at Night” was definitely a standout track. Also loved the Suicide nod “Meatmaker” 7/10

There's a lot to like here: Noisey guitars, the drum sound, some interesting song structures. At first - given the first song and the release date - I thought I was in for a noisy emo treat, but the more I listened, the more it sounded like Buckcherry. In total, it probably lands somewhere in between Buckcherry and At the Drive-In, and that's not a positive. The vocals are a little too cock-rock for my tastes, and the songs often seem self-indulgent. It's ... fine. But I don't need it in my life. (An aside: Listening to this randomly brought to mind the fictional band from Almost Famous. I have no specific memory of what that band sounds like, but I swear it's something like this. I'll have to check on that.)

Cool but too hard for me.

I liked this album for the most part. I can hear lots of different influences in it and even though it's not the most original it's got some good energy. I don't know how often I would come back to it though. 3.4/5

Heard of this band, but never listened. I really thought of like Mick Jagger in the vocals initially, but then read about Iggy Pop leanings in the album and that was a better fit. Later, it reminded me of Closure in Moscow. I initially wasn't sure if I was feeling this because it's pretty derivative, but it did end up winning me over. I enjoyed this and would relisten. 3.25/5

took me quite a while to listen to the whole thing, but it was pretty cool

Well, I definitely don’t think this album deserves to be on a top albums list, but aside from that, I thought it was a pretty decent early 2000s post-punk, and noise rock album. You can definitely hear influences from bands like Sonic Youth and maybe even The Jesus Lizard, but they also really reminded me a lot of Death From Above 1979, especially since they were part of the same era. One element this album had that stood out was a glam side, which I thought was pretty cool and actually even made me think of The Stooges at times.

I will admit that I wasn't closely listening to this album, but I was really enjoying it. I didn't really pick up on anything special about it, but it's solid 2000s indie rock that had me jamming along pretty much the whole time. Favorite Song(s): On the Lash

I enjoyed it. Hard Rock and the back story was interesting. Not something I can just listen to all day. Decent though for a sitting or in a mix. 6.0

Enjoyed it on first listen but I think it'll take more to really get into it. It got a little long by the end.

Baffling inclusion considering how completely unknown they are, but overall a decent surprise. Very strong start, sorta loses momentum, then picks up on some cool experimentation

Fav: Up Against The Wall Motherfucker Least Fav: Meatmaker The same song copy and pasted. Should’ve been 30 mins but thankfully the one idea they had wasn’t too bad

Mérite une réécoute. 3,5/5

I have never once wondered “what if Fun House was indie sleeze” - it’s alright! I’ve rated albums lower but this is the first I’ve thought “there’s no way this is anyone’s favorite album” - no shot it deserves to be here

Pleasant surprise of an awesome album I've never come across. All around enjoyable. 3.5/5

A cacophony that didn't make any sense to me. Average but may listen again when the mood takes me.

I actually don't know how to rate this one, all i know is i like half of the songs on there. very solid garage rock

On the surface this looked like the exact kind of thing I love, noisy punk with a bit of garage and hard rock influence AND a cool cover? Sign me up! What I got was something a lot... milder? It's more mid tempo type of garage punk ala Stooges than something with more legit fire and drive to it like many of the bands I love, but it is a fun time none the less so I still think i won listening to this one and also it being so different than the typical 1001 album pick

I can't tell you how these guys stand out from the sea of 1990s "post-hardcore" bands but they do and I dig it.

Another mystery band and album, one of the things I enjoy about this project, even with the duds (and certainly much more interesting than the 7th Leonard Cohen/Beatles/David Bowie/etc album). I'm not sure I'd exactly call this a dud, but it's also not all that compelling, except perhaps that I would have guessed it was from the 90s and not 2003/2004. There's a few good titles to their tracks (especially the opening track), but I would be hard-pressed to distinguish most of the tracks from each other, and there's unfortunately a bit too much Marilyn-Manson-esque sound for my tastes (mainly the guitar and the lead singer, although at times (especially in "Getting bright at night") I was more reminded of Jane's Addiction). "Spike island" was probably the most accessible song of the lot, and I'm not entirely sure what it was about, like most of the album. Regardless, shame on their label (V2 Records) for letting them hang out to dry, neither promoting the album at all and even forcing the band to pay for the music videos. And kudos to the "1001 Albums" reviewer, who apparently spent the time to interpret the largely-unintelligible lyrics and declare that "Kiss the lizard", "Getting bright at night" and "Big sleep" form a 20-minute "odyssey" centered around "a caustic love song"; almost intriguing enough to listen again (but only almost).

No, sorry not for me.

It was alright

I thought there were parts of this that were kind of cool -- "Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers", "On the Lash", "Spike Island" -- but a lot of it was pretty mediocre. It sounds like a lot of other stuff at the time, so I can see why it may have gotten some praise from critics like Drowned in Sound and Tiny Mix Tapes, but when you dig deeper, the songwriting isn't very good -- it's just like this mid-2000s garage-y noise rock without any legs. 3 stars.

Bra första låt men blir lökigare med tiden. Sångaren är typ den som drar ner betyget. Helt ok överlag, inget super. Önskar det varit lite tyngre, sångaren förstörde en del för mig. Tkr den är average, säkert 2,5.

Good surprise guitars go deeper 3.5

It's alright, but just made me want to listen to Mclusky

I got some Jet vibes from a few songs on this album. Given the fact so many music critics do not like Jet, I think that would not be seen as a good thing. The vibes are very, very strong though. From the opening track on to about half of the other tracks on the album. I find it to be very odd this album was included in the book. The music does rock and is a band I had never heard of, but how the hell did they end up in here? Was there money exchanged because the record company didn't support the album? As I feel I do so many times, I am working it out as to how The Icarus Line are different from other bands in the early-to-mid-2000's? Sea Sick gave me some strong Alice in Chains vibes, which I also did not expect. This is fine, though I'm not sure what this represents that hasn't already been in this book.

Very good.

It’s fine not great not too bad.

A loud, aggressive blast of noise rock and post-hardcore energy. The album delivers raw intensity and chaotic guitars, but not every track leaves a lasting impression. It’s more about attitude and sheer force than memorable songwriting. A solid listen for fans of gritty, confrontational rock, though the relentless volume may wear some listeners down.

This sounds like what happened to Black Flag after West Coast hardcore punk died. The lead singer sounds like Jack White. This is like glam hard core. The lyrics are reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails. This guy sounds so much like Jack White that I'd believe this was one of his side projects if I didn't know better. This is as close to liking hard core as I'm going to get. Getting Bright at Night could be a Nine Inch Nails cover. And it turns out the guitarist is NIN's touring guitarist! You can tell. There's some Rage Against the Machine influence too. That feels more like a shared ancestor situation. Meatmaker is feeling a little more "noise rock" than the rest of the album, that is not a good turn. Party the Baby Off sounds like a Stooges song. Also, pretty good.

I had never heard of this band before at all, but thought the album was pretty good. Fits with the Strokes/Arctic Monkeys/White Stripes rock revival that was happening at the time but a little more punk/thrash than those other acts. I thought the album was at its best when it leaned more into standard rock structure (white devil, spike island, etc)

Decent indie post punk.

Got better towards the end but largely lacking anything memorable. Loved The Stooges throwback but its not The Stooges

Loud rock band with a debt to the Velvet Underground and the Stooges. Good blend of melody and chaos, but honestly others have done it better

Välillä ihan ok menoa, mutta liian paljon huutoa ja epämääräistä mökää. Kai tämä just taittuu ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Honestly very overrated on this app. It's a decently enjoyable punk album where they get noisy on quite some early songs. Punk isn't really a genre i generally enjoy so i didn't love it, but that doesn't decrease any quality of it

Here is a band I had never heard of, and lo the album kicks off with a song called “Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers.” I am primed to be a fan despite an element of surprise: Based on a quick glance at their name, album title and cover art, I was expecting, I dunno…icy North Sea ambient? Chamber folk electronica? (When this album came out, I was fully immersed in the early-aughts rock revival, which leads me to wonder how I missed it, given the critical accolades it earned.) Anyway, I like but am not blown away by this. There is a ramshackle quality that appeals, but the band occasionally veers into the studied iPod-ad rock territory of The Jets or Wolfmother, two forgettable acts from this era who had their moments in the spotlight. I also don’t discern a strong individual identity from this band, rather a carefully coiffed collective sneer.

Derivative is a word that comes to mind for this album. More noise than garage rock, but not very unique in my opinion. It sounds like a mish-mashed combination of a bunch of bands and sounds, from Fugazi to Drive Like Jehu to Jet to Iggy Pop to all American punk and garage rock bands that sound British (intentional or not). I did enjoy the thumpy bass and some of the guitar work. I started around mid 2 but rose closer to 3 after a few listens. But it's a weak 3.

this was insane finding out that like this wasn't on spotify - so i listened to it 50 days later... i'm shocked this was removed cause it was lowkey cool but i get why.

Quality early 2000s alt-rock. This record shreds, including some hard rocking guitars and wailing vocals. Reminiscent of The White Stripes, with some of that grunge feel that Seattle gave us. This record slaps, as the kids say (I think).

Loads of bands borrowed the Jesus Lizard and Birthday Party blueprint, all sporting that big-room, Albini-dry drum sound—but only a few nailed it. While Rye Coalition went full ‘rock out with your cock out,’ Icarus Line turned inward, channeling PIL’s sinister squall. Loved it when it dropped, but it’s feeling time-stamped now. Still solid—just nowhere near a 1001 best album contender.

Never heard this before. Really quite impactful and enjoyable. Coming on like something between Jane's Addiction, JaMC, and The Music. Pleasant surprise.

This album wasn't on Spotify so I listened to it on Youtube, though I only found 11 out of 13. I do believe the rating wouldn't have changed had I listened those two songs. Other than that I really liked the bass in the first song and their use of noise throughout the album.

mia mal

y'all can listen to the clash and say that's not noise but this is??

Sub optimal strokes

Ovo je dobilo veliki hype kad je izašlo ali ono zapravo je tek solidno

I'd never heard of these guys before - noice

Somewhat serviceable screech-rock.

Yet another one where I think they're good at what they do, but I just don't love what they're doing. Wait, didn't I just say that for the last album?

Never heard of this artist. Band reminds me of Death from Above. Also, Royal Blood. Cool stuff. Pretty rocking. Sounds very garage-rock, raw.

Decent, but I’m not sure why it’s any different from Queens of the Stone Age or Them Crooked Vultures

This was fine. 3.3

That's not my taste in music - too confusing

I gave this a listen and it didn't do much for me. I just didn't find much that was unique or compelling.

I also don’t really remember this one. Sounded fine.

I quite liked it, though it did seem quite derivative of various other things (quite Hives-ish). And it went on a little longer than I had patience for.

Not good, but not the worst thing I've listened to. Occasional moments of not bad.

I've never heard of The Icarus Line so this was new to me. While I found this album enjoyable, I don't find anything original or different enough to justify its inclusion on this list. Penance Soiree, while a great album name is no different than any other new, loud, shiny rock from the same time period. 3/5

Not much here for me. Not putting down the music, just hits me as bland background music from the 90s, even though it's not from the 90s.

Шумный громкий, тяжелый. Был не в подходящем настроении для такой записи.

I liked this more the first time I listened.

Not what I was expecting but I liked it.

Frankly, it could’ve been any band of this era. Nothing particularly distinctive but very much of an ilk. Not so much an evening of penance, more like an afternoon of apathy.

Mostly not super interesting.

Great for them, but I can see similiar band every other weekend. This to say I don't really get their inclusion? If they paved a giant way for others, I'll ofcourse take it back but for now... good not great.

An album that thinks it's heavier and rockier than it actually comes across. It feels like it's got all the ingredients to be a great headbanger but something is missing that makes it kind of bland. Again, another album on the list that I can't really fathom why it's on here - there's so many other great albums that could've been picked. Best Tracks: On The Lash; Virgin Velcro; Party The Baby Off

eh. its got its moments but its largely unexciting, and a bit uninspired. its feels like the album is being simultaneously pulled into many different directions and as such it doesnt feel like a concrete thing. not bad though

I enjoyed it but it's nothing crazy. Reminded me of something popular, can't remember what

Absolutely reviled the first song but I think I warmed up to it by the end

Listening to this on YouTube lessened the experience slightly, but it's not not horrible. Yet, I had to skim this — I still think I got the gist of it.

thought i would enjoy it more than i did based on the whole vibes but yea....

I remember definitely having this on an iPod back in the day, yet re-listening in 2025 it does not bring forth a single memory of a riff, hook, lyric or feeling. It sure sounds good though.

нормалек.

Heavy but hollow.

Started well, not my fave though

Bijna lager door dat 2e en 1/2na laatste nummer wat een herrie, rest wel lijp

I do think this was better than I expected. Its not bad, just not memorable. I dont like the mix of clean production with attempts at noise with feeback. Not very memorable but not bad at all.

pretty good

The music was ok, what could be found, but it is a mystery as to how this album is on the list. The content of the album is unfindable on spotify, the only trace on the web was a playlist on youtube, cobbled together from uploads of various accounts. Those videos had been up for over a decade and only had 10k views. Whoever owns the rights to this couldn't be bothered to enforce copyright or get a deal with Vevo or whatever. The spotify account for what else is available on this artist gets 1.8k listens monthly. To call the interest in this band obscure compared to the rest of this list is an understatement. If anything, this album is an example of how very little art that is produced survives into the future. Only 20 years ago this album made some kind of waves and now it is on the border of extinction. Have a think about that.

Someone listened to Jane’s Addiction…I didn’t hate it

Pretty rough and mashing, quite like it

Fine early 00s garage rock, but nothing really connected with me.

This generally rocked, but nothing really grabbed me and said, "You must hear more!"

point0.

Need to listen to it more often.

Never heard of these guys. I actually likes this, not a lot, but liked it. It led me back to Muse, who are superior in every way

I’d give it 2.5 stars but since I can’t do that, I’m bumping it to 3 because, as someone else said, I never would have heard this otherwise. I was expecting some death core but it wasn’t as brutal as I thought it’d be, and caught more joy out of it than I was expecting. Per my own OCD rules, gotta listen through to all of these albums, and this one kinda caught me by surprise

Not sure why I didn’t know about this band. I enjoyed the record but not sure what puts it in the 1001.

Didn't like the first few songs at all but it improves as it continues. 3 stars or C-.

Some raw upbeat rock. A good example of an early 2000s band carrying the torch of some late 60s early 70s hard rock. High energy, but gritty

This album is perfectly fine. I don’t understand why it’s so poorly rated. Or why The Icarus Line has so few monthly listeners on Spotify? It reminds me so much of The Black Keys and other similar rock artists of the 2000s.

looks good¬ But not available to listen

It's loud and rough. Not bad, but nothing that really made me want to come back to it either.

It’s nothing spectacular.

More fun than I expected

I saw this band live, once. This album was better than that performance. It's fine. That being said, I have no idea why I needed to listen to this album before I died. It's not horrible, but I can't figure out what makes it that important to hear. The other albums on this list that I didn't like, at least those (so far) have had some level of historical significance. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 1/5

I didn't take to this straightaway but it definitely grew on me. By the end I was quite looking forward to giving it another go. A bit like The Vines or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club but more sinister

I had never heard of this band despite it being the kind of music I was listening to around the time it came out. Sounds like it would have been played on 93X, the area's hard rock radio station. It's pretty decent, the vocals reminded me at times of White Zombie era Rob Zombie's, sometimes like Alice In Chains and other times The Black Angels. My highlights were White Devil and Seasick. I was also kind of liking Virgin Velcro and Party The Baby Off if you don't think about the song titles or lyrics.

some bands have to go through an iteration or two before turning into something great. Uncle Tupelo explodes and turns into Wilco and Son Volt. Alice 'n Chains coughs out a loogie and that thing mutates into Alice in Chains. Slapstick breaks into two pieces and morphs into The Lawrence Arms and Alkaline Trio. the Icarus Line were a band in bad need of a breakup. this is not because i dislike them, but because something is holding them back from actually releasing something great. i feel like everything is half cooked, having trouble finding its own identity. the first track's good, "Spike Island" is good, and i can tolerate a lot of "Getting Bright at Night", but a lot of this bores me. the songs drag on. the album fails to develop an actual image out of the frying negative of guitar noise and yowling that wears its 70's Stoogepunk pedigree on its sleeve. i think this is a just fine album to start your career with on a little who-cares label run by your friends and his CD writer. unfortunately, this is a CD that people paid a lot of money to Richard Branson for, which means that this is your band now. this is it. the Icarus Line broke up after Alvin DeGuzman died of cancer in 2017. even if i'm not the biggest fan of the band, to hell with what i think -- i hope he was at least somewhat satisfied with what he made. i hope that for him, this was a pinnacle, even if i wish it hadn't been. by all accounts, they had much more potential than they let on.

Another one of them never heard of them before bands. No worries getting to close to the Sun with these guys.

begon zeer veelbelovend maar zakte daarna toch wat in

Jane's Addiction meets Soundgarden, not bad, quite listenable actually but not memorable either, 3.2

Reminds me of my Iron Maiden era. Cool, but not for my current me.

Noisy and passive garage rock. Some cool ideas scattered throughout

Very nice Black Flag cover band...

I was prepared to hate this, and I did not enjoy the noisier tracks, but I found most of it to be pretty decent.

Not bad, nothing stands out.

I'm not totally sure what to think of it yet. Only listened to it one time, but it was ... interesting.

Solid garage rock

10/16/24. Never heard of this band before, and this may be the first hardcore punk album I've gotten on this journey. Decent album with a couple standout songs, very solid. Loved the guitars and noise, but thought it ran a bit long.

Pretty good.

That was okay but I’ll never listen to it again

A combination of The Smashing Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson and The White Stripes. Pretty good album.

ok lol so i really do wonder how records like this get in this list without passing any judgement about the band's music, they're probably legit but they're a "literally who" band; i'm guessing music critics in 2004 chose it as a poster child for something but it's like a salad bowl of 2000s stadium indie/garage rock revival, fucking The Jesus Lizard-style noise rock and a bit of At The Drive-In-style phc it doesn't particularly resonate with me like the two bands i just mentioned, but it's definitely interesting some of it rubs me the right way for sure though

Not as bad as I thought it would be

Didn't have great hopes for this initially -- first couple of songs left me cold with that whole Soup Dragons x Soundgarden vibe. But it grew on me as the album wore on. Once I got into the aesthetic of it, it's a pretty decent rock and roll album. Kinda sludgy in places, but the latter half of the album is definitely the strength. Solid. Unexpected bangers: Spike Island, White Devil, Virgin Velcro

Has the right ingredients for something I would really like but ends up just shy of being really good.

A store-brand version of At The Drive-In, with more garage revival and less post-hardcore. It’s fine — and I tend to be very forgiving of this sound based on my biases — but it’s very sloppy, very cobbled together, and while The Icarus Line would probably argue that that was done so with purposeful intent, the result is closer to a chaotic assault of mediocrity than anything truly experimental. When it is noisy, post-hardcore, and doing what every good band from Refused to The Blood Brothers did in this era, the results feels cheap and the band feels unsure of themselves; when they’re at their tightest, though, they sound like every other dime-a-dozen garage revival band that got overhyped in music rags at the time. If Penance Soirée had a bit more focus, it would be a better record, but I’d still probably felt apathetic about it. It’s heavy for people who thought Franz Ferdinand were hard, and that’s way too tame for me. Yet another instance where I’d have made a radically different decision with the “post-hardcore” inclusions on this list.

Röyhkeän räyhäkkä. YT soittolistasta ei jaksanut rullata toista kierrosta ja ei jäänyt ihan kirkkaana mieleen.

Kuuntelin tän biisit valitettavasti epäjärjestyksessä, joten kokonaisuutta on vaikea arvioida. Mutta tää kuulostaa näiltä bändeiltä, jotka kuulostaa aika samalta ja joista mä tykkään: White stripes, Death from above, Royal blood… eli jees! Jäin vain kaipaamaan kunnon bängereitä, tää tyyli kaipaa levylle niitä.

Not really into the whole post-hardcore scene. Decent enough album, but doesn't feel like anything special compared to other artists from the genre 3/5

A fine semi hardcore endeavor.

Sale, cru et bruyant. Écoute favorable, mais difficile alors que j'étais au travail. Je devrai revisiter

Fairly good noisy rock. Seemingly nothing too special but not a bad way to spend an afternoon. 3/5

Getting some Nirvana vibes from On the Lash. Meatmaker is giving me an aneurysm. I really liked some aspects of this album. Little too wild for me at some parts. Low 3

I love garage rock and post-hardcore so I thought I was going to love this, but it's a bit too middle of the road in both areas to really grab me. The singer and band in general remind me of Jet, have that sort of try hard swagger in the lyrics and singing style and gratuitous use of wah pedal. In isolation there were some bits I really liked, bass in the first song was class. Dont think it outweighed the stuff I didn't like though, 2.5.

Heard the name the Icarus line before but don't think I've heard them. I reckon if someone described them to me I would think I would really like them.... However, didn't really grab me. Kinda like the mars Volta a bit but not as interesting. 3 probably fair

Never heard of this band but they were decent.

I was way more up on this at the start of the album, but over time it started to drag a lot more and began to feel more repetitive and samey. It’s nowhere near as noisy and discordant as people are saying. I thought I was in for an ear-splitting time, but it’s just quite competent grungey / garage rock. It’s ok. There’s enough here that works.

You take the Rolling Stones during their heroin period and you put them through a distortion pedal. If that sounds like your thing, well, have I got the album for you!

Not on Spotify

I don't have many words to say about this, honestly. It wasn't as noisy as I was worrying it'd be, and thank goodness for that. Going by the reviews and the samples Spotify provided, I was worried I was in for "noise purely for noise's sake." While I still don't think it adds to much, it's not completely unbearable. And what they're playing behind all the noise... Yep, it's 2000's garage rock revivial. Ultimately, I think I'd rather be listening to The White Stripes, bit as the "we have it at home" variety... It's not gonna "save rock n' roll," but in a pinch, it's fine. And that's my final verdict. "It's fine." A big ol' down-the-middle 3. Which, hey, I was expecting to give this thing a 2, or even a 1, so if I were The Icaris Line I'd be happy with a 3. I also, as well, wouldn't be surprised that I was taken out of later editions of the book.

It's got a bit too much feedback noise for my liking, but it's mostly just some alright 2000's rock with some heavy Stooges / Iggy Pop influence. 3.5 down to 3.

The whole time this felt like I was listening to a knock off early White Stripes album that took direction from Lou Reed.

I happen to like this and think it does have a place on a list like this.

This week has been all over the place in terms of artists. Bouncing from well known to not so well known. Today’s album is another one of those instances where it makes me wonder what the authors sources were, and how he found some of these. When I clicked on this band’s Spotify profile, and saw that they just barely had about 1,500 monthly listeners, I was legitimately shocked. Being able to see every number in the streams of the most popular songs is always really weird. If we are basing this list on most influential and most popular, how in the world is this here? I’m aware of how horribly cruel that sounds, but it confuses me. Another thing I found amusing is a quote from the Wikipedia article. “It was one of 2004's most critically acclaimed releases…”. Maybe 20 years ago when this released it was worthy of critical acclaim, but if you look at the general consensus now, it’s mostly negative. They aren’t even that many people talking about this anyway. RYM? A total of 471 ratings, with less than 20 actual reviews. AOTY? Only 22 ratings, and a whopping 2 reviews. Who knows, I might be writing the longest review this album has ever received. All I have done so far is shit on this. So let me actually devote some time into talking about the things that I like. You know, even after everything I said, all in all this album isn’t actually half bad. It’s not amazing or anything. But for a small band, I think they manage to sound pretty good, and the production quality is surprisingly high. The vocalist was cool and intense at best, and maybe a little lame at worst. Really my biggest issue is identity. For as heavy and borderline violent that this sounds, it also tries to be experimental and pull together a nine minute long song with build-up like Getting Bright at Night. A lot of this probably comes from the guitarist, who would go on to tour with Nine Inch Nails. You can definitely hear the inspiration too. But if I was in the mood for this kind of music, I would go for other artists from the same time period, like The White Stripes, first. Rating: 6/10

Partly nice

Here's the deal. I listened to this whole album yesterday. Today I had to go back and play snippets to remember it. Maybe that's on me, but it just kinda sounded like early 2000's rock. I'd go to a show but it just sounds a lot like a lot of other bands.

Cross between subways and Jesus lizard - quite good

first listen. Pretty cool but I got tired of it rather fast

Great production. That bass tone! Good songs and a fun mix of styles. Bonus points for the sick album cover.

This band was clearly very into Spacemen 3 and you can hear it on Big Sleep. Still, this is pretty mediocre.

Better than I thought, 3.6

Wow. 1,508 monthly listeners on Spotify. I guess 1,508 users get this album a month haha. It says that Icarus Line was inspired by the Stooges. I had a Stooges album yesterday. Opening track was pretty good honestly. High energy and hard hitting. Most of these songs were pretty decent with a few songs that were a bit too much and a little headache inducing. Can definitely hear a lot of influence from The Stooges, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Strokes. Honestly not bad but I don't really understand why it made this list. Getting Bright at Night was a pretty sick song.

This was kind of cool. Pretty aggressive post hardcore punk kind of stuff. When I have to read up on an album from the last 20 years, its usually not a good sign. Apparently this was an important album for the genre? But.. they only get like 1500 monthly listens, so I really don't know. It was cool, but I probably won't revisit it.

The White Stripes rip-off for sure. But really? This doesn't seem to have had any impact on the culture in the 20 years since it was released. Not to say it was terrible. I love the White Stripes, but if I wanted to listen to that type of music, I'll listen to them.

Yeah kind of alright, bit screamy in places, like the longer song on there

Merely fine.

I mean it was okay. It kinda reminded me of The Vines. The lyrics were kinda meh but instrumentally it sounded pretty alright. I dunno this really didn’t sound that innovative or fresh to me just kinda some more meh garage rock. Don’t think this should’ve been on the list and don’t understand how it got critical acclaim and stuff it’s not that great.

From "Spike Island" forward, it's a good album. Maybe the label showed a lack of interest because they listened to only the first four songs.

Not particularly notable. Sounds like an amalgamation of artists who came before. Not sure it's deserving of the list, but wasn't terrible either.

Never heard of this band but I enjoyed this album.

I tried to find a way into this and I thought it had merit and some musicality, but it's just not something I can get excited by.

This is noise. Not bad noise but the noise level stays consistent from one song to another through the first half of the album. That to me, doesn’t separate the songs from one another like I personally like to hear. That also means that there really isn’t a stand out song. Later listening and they remind me of Jet. So if you like Jet, these guys may be for you. Choice cut: Caviar

just loud heavy rock album with distortion, reminds me of the white stripes and queens of the stone age, has good songs but nothing special

This started out way better than it ended.

"Penance Soiree" is second full-length album by Los Angles post-harcore band The Icarus Line. Garage rock and noise rock are the listed genres. I'd add in stoner rock and just plain hard rock. The band had recorded most of the album the year before but in-fighting with their record label V2 about lack of support delayed things. The album was one of 2004's most critically acclaimed albums. Swirling noises and guitar sounds open "Up Against the Wall Motherfucker." Drums and a loud bass push things at a grinding pace which speeds up. Joe Cardamore's vocals remind me of Layne Staley and The Cults' Ian Astbury. The one thing this song does do is rock. "On the Lash" adds distortion and feedback to the guitars' sounds. This is fast. These guys aren't messing around. The band grinds through some songs ("Geting Bright at Night" and "White Devil") in the middle part of the album. Very much stoner rock with extended jams and distortion. The last two songs bring the heavy but also more of the melody. "Seasick" slows things up and actually adds an acoustic guitar which gives a decent melody. Just so you know it's them, they end the song with two minutes of feedback. The last song "Party the Baby Off" brings the pop-rock. Melodic, layered and catchy guitar hooks. Enough guitar weirdness to keep it interesting. Maybe the best song on the album. There's no doubt this band can just fuckin' rock when they want to. Distorted layered guitars, bass heavy. The music moving like sludge and then speeding up heading into thrash metal terroritory. They reminded me of a lot of bands including Alice in Chains, the Cult, Monster Magnet, Soundgarden and the Smashing Pumpkins. Overall, I found this to be a pretty decent album. So, if you like any of the bands mentioned above, you'll probably like this.

Gotta love a band who have a link to their official MySpace on Wikipedia. I didn’t like a couple of the song titles, and the music isn’t my thing, but it wasn’t too bad. Bit Jane’s Addictiony?

More EA Sports game menu core! This and Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are MLB 2k5 pilled and Madden 04 celled. In fact, a song on this album was actually in a Tony Hawk game soundtrack. So I’ll expand the genre to PS2 core. Some defining characteristics of PS2 core: distorted guitars…and vocals…and everything else, pop-punk lyrics, couch co-op, media player buried in the settings where you can remove songs from your game, that one dad in your neighborhood that had the PS2 internet card and played strangers in madden online, rogue rap songs that can’t be found on the internet anymore, bad graphics and worse dialogue, chaotic drums. I look back with fond memories but objectively don’t love the music

I don’t like it but I appreciate it

reasonable sound

Very noisy instruments, which I don't usually like, but listening to it made me feel like rodrick in the live action diary of a wimpy kid movie. So that's positive

Not too bad

Good Noisy Very good

I didn’t want to Spit On It, but I was getting a little Seasick. We did make it to Spike Island to Party the Baby Off

Honestly? The whole album kind of ran together. Nothing stood out to me at all. Very much all sounded the same. I could see myself liking this maybe back in 2019-2020. Maybe worth revisiting but I doubt I’ll change my opinion

This felt to me like a garage band, a punk band, and a grunge band had a wild weekend threesome and this baby was the result. It's messed up but totally accepts and embraces who it is, in spite of what its therapist says about it all being dad's and mom's and other dad's fault.

Before Today – 3.5 Wrong – 3.5 Single – 3.5 The Heart Remains a Child – 3.5 Walking Wounded – 3 Flipside – 3.5 Big Deal – 3 Mirrorball – 3.5 Good Cop, Bad Cop – 3 Average - 3.33 She has a nice voice and I liked the Electronic aspects of it but I just found it quite boring

It was okay; nothing stellar. Good listen, but got bored near the end.

alright. i liked it more towards the end

Up Fav songs: Up against the wall morherfucker =]

Didn't mind this one. Solid punk album.

Certainly interesting to review a hardcore album after some of the genres recently. These guys aren't bad. It's a ton of noise but they are decently technical. Not my favourite but for what it is they've done well.

Powerful, groovy and best without the overly dramatic Vocalist.

Interesting Album, enjoyed the 2nd half more than the first. Standout songs: Spike Island Big Sleep White Devil

Hard to believe I’ve not previously heard of this band. Sounds very pre-grunge (despite debuting 10 years later).

Solid early 2000s rock album. Nothing particularly interesting/catchy and no real stand out tracks on first listen. Worth another listen sometime.

Feel like I need to stop giving 3* ratings, wish I could give this 3.5. reminding me of royal blood

Very much in my wheelhouse but was never that bothered about them at the time. Still its good but nothing special...

First listen Saved 6/13: Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers On the Lash Caviar Spike Island Getting Bright At Night Big Sleep

Lively background music.

Alright for early oughts punk, nothing to really write home about, very middle of the road

Decent

This was hard

They say don’t judge an album by its cover. Based in its cover I thought I’d hate this one, but I didn’t. I ended up liking how the long songs build. Unfortunately there are still enough stinkers here to prevent me from fully recommending it.

fine, typically rock/punk sound.

I'm not sure if I loved this or not, I think I'd have to listen to it a few more times to be sure.

Forgettable, but 3 stars for good moments and exceeding expectations

NOISY ROCKING ROCK, SORTA HURTS THE EARS, BUT SORTA LOVE IT Fav songs: On The Lash, Spike Island

Some of this was cool, some was annoying. Ultimately, I’ll probably forget about it. 3/5

Rock macarra.

It's fine. I think the energy of chaos would be excellent live, if you're into that sort of thing, but it was a lot less exciting listening to it.

this was probably the smallest band on this list, less than 1500 monthly listeners, so an odd choice seemingly. they were fine, just not my favorite genre overall

A really interesting album - quite aggressive at points, and I liked it!

Not bad, hard rock album.

I would have liked this a lot in middle school, it's not so much my type of rock anymore

This album is in the category of, "we've heard this all before, but done better". Though I like garage noise rock, this doesn't convince me to want to hear anymore from The Icarus Like. There's nothing wrong with it and some of the songs are both intense and interesting, it's just that they don't bring anything new to the table and may have gotten attention (and a record deal) riding some kind of wave of noise music acceptance. I've heard enough!

I should have hated this more

если наложить на стандартный гараж/альт рок кучу дисторшна, то насколько это будет классным ноизом?

Well, I certainly do not hate this as much as the population of reviewers on here do. There are elements of cacophony here, but they definitely do draw away from the album for me like they do for others. 2004 does feel a little late for a band like this though

Nice little punk album

I don't get the hate for this. It's a decent rocker, fairly heavy but not overbearingly so, good instrumentation. The bass especially stands out to me. I can definitely see the influence from Iggy Pop/The Stooges. Some of it is kind of dated, sure, but most of the albums from this time are. It kind of falls into a "post grunge we don't know what to do anymore but we all like 70s punk and the White Stripes" category which isn't a bad thing. It does get a little repetitive, that's true. But they certainly deserve more than the whopping 1,440 listeners they have on Spotify...

3.5., dobar garaž rock/noise

I have heard much worse in this genre, not that it's my thing.

Meh. Pretty noisy. Might've liked this better in high school when I was bitching about my first world problems.

droning spicy grunge garage band sludge. great background music but there's nothing I could super sink my teeth into here. 3/5

This appears to have a lot of hate, but you know it's a fine noisy late 90s/early 00's rock. Certainly prefer this to nu metal. Very listenable to - but it is too damn long hence only three stars.

Some very unmemorable noise rock. 5/10

While listening, I wasn't sure how I felt about this. It was a lot like yesterday's album by Kings of Leon. They were released the same year and they're both garage rock revival. I didn't hate it but I don't think I liked it very much. Also, like yesterday's album, there were times when I thought it could be something I'd like, but indifference was my overarching emotion.

This one is weird. I could see myself liking it given enough listens but its not pleasant enough tor me to want to do that

This is like discount Iceage without the hooks or the interesting guitar riffs. Average noisy indie rock band makes an average noisy indie rock album. Nothing much else to say here. (These songs feel way too long)

in two minds about this one... I like the vibe but not sure if I will listen to again. No specific tracks stood out

es overstimulated mich aber an sich ist es ein sehr gutes album. sehr laut

Essential Tracks: Virgin Velcro (Playlist)

Icarus Line kicking out the jams! Feeling some heavy Iggy Pop and MC5 vibes off this record.

It's weird, I remember Googling Aaron North (the guitarist from Icarus Line) a while back because I remembered him from his time in Nine Inch Nails, and never knew Icarus Line was as big as it was. I can definitely see it: there's hints of glam with the sleaze turned up to ten, noise, all lead by someone doing their best Iggy Pop impersonation. Reminds me a little bit of the bass-heavy Death From Above (1979). It's easy to get lost in, like after a night out where you're drunk out of your mind and you're trying to piece it all together the next day. I like it, or maybe the idea of it. Favorite tracks: "Up Against the Wall, Motherfuckers", "Getting Bright At Night", "Big Sleep"
