Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Very 80s, nice to listen to in the background, but nothing really stood out

Always interesting, it's fine

This isn't insightful by now, but the line connecting Kate Bush and Lorde is drawn bold. And I like that! Our music should be self-referential and iterating. Kate feels more genre-breaking than many of the delicate rock-pop albums from the 60s-80s here. But I can't pretend that I'm wholly captivated either!

Pretty good, probably more of a 3.5 but not quite a four.

Some good tunes in there but mostly pretty mid.

I was pleasantly surprised but went back for a second listen and didn’t get hooked

Kind of like if early 80's Madonna and Björk were mashed in to one.

Interesting listen and quite enjoyed it. Lyrics will take some time to really get and understand. Loved the production and it made the songs feel like a journey at times. 3.5. Could see this being a 4 after a few registers

It felt so ethereal and like airy (if that makes sense). I am going to re-listen when I am on a walk rather than sitting on my desk. I liked it!

Thats enough of Kate Bush for today. Again, felt it started strong and fell off. I'd like to hear minimalist version of her stuff. Mhhhhhhmmmmm yesssss.

Not my favourite of hers but I do love listening to her sing. That last song though. Wow. (41 known/88 new)

It feels like this book went one album too many with Kate Bush. If I am not wrong, the latter editions of the book do not have this album and it was replaced by one of the more modern albums. Kate Bush's other two albums deserved a spot in the book, and this is not a criticism, but The Sensual World is more of the same. It's not "the same," but it is the same principle of music that a listener can hear on Hounds of Love and The Dreaming. There is nothing offensive here but if you liked the first two albums then you may like this one. If you didn't like the first two albums there aren't really any big hits/songs you can hear that would change your mind.

This was very good. Some nice mood music going on, with lots of instrumental layers. Not sure if it was remotely sensual though.

Quite good

Solid work! This album does not contain my favorite Kate Bush song, "Running Up That Hill", but still distinctive and full of artistry.

This album has the vibes of a record that was probably very well received when it came out, and regarded by many as a groundbreaking one. Not sure if that was the case, but that is the aura it has to me. I personally think this sounds too “grand”. Both the lyrics and instrumental arrangement feels like something meant for the big stages. It is also impossible to overlook the 80s sound that runs through the whole album, making it feel quite unmodern and stuck in time. In summary this was not an album for me, and I struggled to find songs that I want to hear again. Not because they’re bad, but just because it’s not my thing. Weak 3.

too many bagpipes

The vocals are frustratingly low in the mid. Production is very off its tone, but not unpleasant. Despite the mix, her voice is excellent. Songwriting is top notch. Between A Man And A Woman is the standout for me.

Good album. Almost gave it a 4. This Woman’s Work is a phenomenal song and carry’s this album.

Kate Bush isn’t for me - I love her most popular tracks but the rest is a bit beyond me. I don’t get it. Average for me.

This was better than expected. It helped having Mick Karn playing bass on one track. It's hard to believe that This Woman's Work was a single, but it is a beautiful song.

i kinda dig the 80's style, but sometimes it really drags and becomes boring

Kate Bush is fantastic, this album certainly isn't getting the same amount of love as Hounds of Love since that has had its revival recently. And I get it, this is a bit better of and album, but this is also a pretty good album.

kate bush really is beyond! beautiful album but i’m not one for the otherworldly language she starts to sing in, love this woman’s work since we sung it in choir. big fan of deeper understanding though

7/10 Highlights: The Sensual World Love And Anger This Woman's Work

Rather boring for her. I find it mostly middle-of-the-road and somewhat cloying. I much prefer earlier albums of hers.

The Sensual World was much better than expected. The Dreaming, was in my opinion terrible but here you can definitely hear the female Leonard Cohen 6.8/10

Overall, very pleasant album to listen to at work on a Tuesday.

One great song and a bunch of mediocre ones.

I felt a little "meh" about this while it was on. But I really get the sense that this would grow on me with multiple listens.

Bit wailey, innit. Not her finest record, but I can see the charm and attraction in it. Not something that I’ll look to in the future though.

Great vocals She’s like an old version of SPELLLING

Like it 3/5

This would have been a 4 for Kate and the songs but I can’t hack the mid-80s recording.

Kate has a very unique style, I enjoyed the album, some songs were excellent, probably not something I'd listen to again and again, very specific mood needed.

Definitely of its time - sexy and worldly in a Ladbroke Grove dinner party sorta way. Would fit well to a Dalton Bond. Manages to be both quiet and intense. Favourite tracks: Sensual World, Heads We're Dancing, Deeper Understanding, Cloudbusting

I respect her, but I just can’t get into it. Like others have mentioned, the lyrics seem to just wander aimlessly without truly going anywhere. Not enough good instrumentals either to keep me entertained. Just not my style, perhaps paying more attention to the lyrical content the album would grow on me

This album was really different from most music I listen to. Kate does a really good job of using sounds in her music from nature that add to the haunting and ethereal sound of her music. When it's done right it sounds really good but otherwise it gets repetitive. I really like her music but this is not my favorite album of hers. I would listen to it again though so 3.4 🌟

This was a fine album. No major hits like Running Up That Hill, though. 3 stars. Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it

Kate Bush is somewhere between an underrated artist, or an acquired taste. I feel she's a little bit of both. Nothing earth shattering here with this album. I was expecting we were gonna get her resurgence album that featured "Running Up That Hill" but I guess not. I wasn't familiar with her work until Stranger Things brought her back into the zeitgeist. This was satisfactory at best. I didn't hate it, but I also didn't love it.

This was fine. The music was generally OK and the vocals were nothing spectacular. I am not sure why it's so highly regarded, but everyone has their own taste.

So far it is the most challenging Kate Bush album for me - Hounds of Love and The Kick Inside (which isn't on this list) are my favorites and I also loved her most avantgarde work, The Dreaming, but at first listen The Sensual World is even more mysterious and ambiguous than her other albums - the songs often don't have a clear direction, and none of the songs were familiar to me before either. She is original and etheral as always but I will definitely need more listen to get into this album, so now I can't give it really a higher rate than 3 stars.

Pretty solid album, doesn’t hit the highs of Hounds Of Love but still pretty solid. Need to relisten and write a full review. 3/5

Not bad, but not great

Haven’t listened to too much Kate Bush, other than the preceding album “Hounds of Love” (which I liked much better). This seemed much less mature than the other album and seemed more imitative of Madonna/Cyndi Lauper.. 2.5/5 wish I liked this more

I want to like Kate Bush a lot more than I do, but outside of a few select songs, she just doesn't do it for me. This album gets an extra star for "This Woman's Work," which is one of her songs that I love, but in general I've enjoyed covers more than her original. As an album, though, I just don't love it.

A great and cohesive record filled to the brim with beautiful tracks.

Some cool moments, but just okay for the most part.

Far from her best but this is still a solid album. The highlights are the title track and "Rocket's Tail". Favorite track: The Sensual World

Not my fave

It's not my favorite Kate Bush stuff at all, it is 100% music you have to be just in the right mood for also, isn't it?

It was fine. Nothing special.

I don't know what to say about this album. I had to listen to it three times, but even then I'm still confused. 😂 I'll give it a 3 since I didn't hate it.

The world really is full of sense and nonsense.

Besonders hervorzuheben sind die Songs „The Sensual World“ und „This Woman's Work“.

Her I respect more than I enjoy. The singing can be a bit much, but she does her own thing and obviously puts a lot of craft into it.

Pretty good album but there are better ones by Kate Bush i think

I started thinking this album was terrible compared to Bush's previous efforts but it certainly grew on me. There are a number of dated references (some computer bullshit) but it also feels a more personal, less literary and more introspective.

What a strange, deep, and idiosyncratic album this is. This is the first album in this exercise (I'm 10 in) I've listened to.. i came to it either no great expectations, as I've found Kate Bush to be somewhat of a foreing country to me. I respect her as an artist but as an artist making art that is not for me or that eludes me in some way. So I tried again with the open ears I'm trying to bring to this exercise. I found if charmed me and brought me to different parts of my brain. If I'm explaining myself badly it's because the songs defy conventional explanation. There is some pop structure in there but the lyrical content and forms and melodies just keep moving and shifting as you try to pin them down. Dammit I'm going to listen to it again!

Didn't give me the same thrill as the last two Kata Bush albums I've had. It starts slow in my opinion and improves towards the end, but still mildly disappointed. 6/10

Better than I expected but still not my bag. I want to like Kate Bush but her music doesn't let me.

I'll say this: nobody does the baby voice like Kate Bush. And sadly this is the first of three of her albums in this collection, so I have plenty more baby voice to listen to. And all I can really hope is that this isn't her best album of the three in the collection, as it felt so saccharine and painfully melodramatic (earnest?) throughout. I think part of my negative reaction is how much world music plays in the background of most of the tracks, in a very Paul Simon sort of way. I kept expecting to hear a refrain along the lines of "Do they even know it's Christmas in Africa" with each song. And the videos don't help much either, although I give full credit to the fact that she produced them all. The title track goes full on Maid Marion in a kind of painfully awkward way (I then read about how that was supposed to be a long James Joyce exposition of Molly Bloom, complete with all the yes exclamations, so maybe not *so* bad), while "Love and anger" was particularly cringe-worthy, at least viewed in 2025, with her clutching sceptre and crown and then whirling dervishes circling her in some sort of colonial abjuration (or maybe worship?). I kind of expected to recognize at least one song from this album, but apparently I wasn't listening to the right radio stations back when this album came out?

otherworldly voice. certainly a product of its time, with all the synths and layered voices. didn’t hate it but probably wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it again.

Kate’s music always carries a feeling of otherworldliness that is appealing, but otherwise I didn’t find much to bite into on this one.

Decent album, but a bit too 80s for me in the intonation

Kate Bush remains an enigma. Every time I revisit one of her albums, I find myself both intrigued and challenged. I’ve always struggled to fully connect with her work, as many of her songs tend to blend together for me. That said, this album had its moments. Reaching Out and Heads We're Dancing stand out as fantastic pop tracks, showcasing her unique ability to tell stories through catchy melodies but there is also a lot of tracks that dont really offer much at all and all sound very similar. Favorite track: Heads We're Dancing Least favorite track: I struggle with whimsical, dreary songs like Deeper Understanding and Rockets tail. Album artwork: A stunning cover that perfectly captures the album’s essence.

The best songs here are poppy ones that showcase her voice. But overall did not catch my attention much. Stand-out: This Woman's Work

Wandering and wandering this felt like. Searching for a melody, searching for a hook. It’s beautiful sounding, but wasn’t incredible to me.

Decent KB album that is bookends by 2 terrific tunes. Mellow and accessible.

This is a step up for Kate Bush. He previous efforts were poor at best, but what she's doing here is actually not terrible. I wouldn't just sit and listen to it, and it still does have a bit of that cheesy 80s quality to it. However, the experimentation is toned down quite a bit, and it doesn't sound as bizarre. It sounds more harmonious, and this is, therefore, not bad music 👍

Any resemblance to George Bush?

This is what I expect when I think of shitty 80's Pop music. Whiney and bland and annoying Best Song: Rocket's Tail Rating: 5.0/10 3 Stars

Love her unique voice

Couple decent songs, but it seems to have aged quite a bit 6/10

Not my tempo

Not really my thing but it was okay. Somewhere between a 2 and a 3 for me.

A little too flighty for me!

I get the point after half the record, no need to continue... Some nice melodies, but buried in a lot of chaos... Still ok

I was apprehensive of this album, as I've not really enjoyed the Kate Bush music I've heard previously. I feel like this one has potential to grow on me through additional plays. Will definitely revisit! Best song: Rocket's Tail

Kate Bush has a good voice and she has some good songs. This is a solid album, nothing particularly stands out as a song I need to have from her but I did enjoy listening to it. 3/5 stars.

I don’t think I proactively sought out Kate Bush until Running up That Hill gained renewed popularity after featuring on Stranger Things. Her music is a bit confounding. She’s obviously talented and I enjoy the range of her music. Just hasn’t really hit home for me. This is a solid album. Good not great. The big surprised was This Woman’s Work. I had no clue Maxwell’s version was a cover. Good stuff. 3/5

Pretty good. I enjoyed the sound, production, and performances. None of the songs seemed to stick though.

I'm not sure what she's singing about but I'm sure it's all chuffing lovely. I was a bit distracted by "This Woman's Work" as it sounded ready to jump into N Trance at any second.

It was bang average

I liked this. It was more acceptable than the last one of hers o heard. I think had I been a ten in the 80s I would have linked this.

Decent album.

Ah yes, much groove, very road-trip.

Storslået vokal, poppet, følelsesladet, teatralsk

Seems like an album that will reward repeated listens, but a 3 after one listen

Left me wanting

I gave both of the last two Kate Bush albums I was given a four. I keep almost loving her but can't quite make it. This album did not do the trick. Very strong start, strong finish, but the middle is just all muddled. I would probably give it another star with another listen or two but I'm going with my first impression this time.

Experimental and ambient with good vocals, but not for me

Pop suavecín. Ni fu ni fa.

despite years of recommendations from big boi and my friend jack, i've never latched on. still, i dig the invention and the self-consciously weird stuff even when the worst bits feel like performance poetry. and who could dislike a song about falling in love with a computer program from 1989?

Not my bag but it's obvious why some consider her a queen of the 80s, especially with ballads like Reaching Out.

The first signs of cracks in Kate Bush's body of work become apparent for me with this album. This is the third one on this list, and not everything is equally strong. Fortunately, there are still enough beautiful songs on this CD to enjoy. The opener, "Sensual World," made me think this would be another "Hounds of Love," but alongside "The Fog" (featuring Nigel Kennedy on violin) and "This Woman's Work," it stands out as the absolute highlight of the album. However, I found myself losing interest and focus while listening to the rest of the tracks, which has never happened with her previous albums. Overall, it's not a bad album, but it is clearly the weakest of the three.

There were some beautiful moments, but also just a little too experimental. I really liked This Woman's Work, and lyrics were interesting and deep in songs like Between a Man and a Woman or the Fog. But then those just became more singing poetry or singing story telling. They didn't always tie together as a song, leaving me wanting something more from them that tied each together. Her voice is also a little much after a while. It works with the 80s musical stylings, but it just also just is a lot after the whole album.

Third Kate Bush album and we have not reached 6% of the list...?

An intriguing album by an intriguing artist. Production is a little dated.

I enjoyed the solid 80s production, but I was not a fan of her singing style which seems averse to expressing a melody or a hook. A lyrical and vocal style such as hers seems to undercut the heft of her lyrical story. I prefer the way Tori Amos handles this by giving her vocal melodies more weight, and not shying away from vamping traditional verse/chorus ideas. Bush is all over the place. I really did dig the instrumentals. A great jazz rock/fusion vibe that I would have enjoyed listening to even more if the vocals had been stripped out altogether.

Lovely voice.

The Good: Kate Bush tells us about a sensual world!! The Bad: just whispering does not make something sensual… The Ugly: too much whispering going on… I recall the first time I heard “This Woman’s Work”, it was, as should be, during that dramatic moment in the He Said / She Said flick, and it always stuck to me as a song that belonged on a soundtrack. So, decades later, I learn that a whole album was tied neatly around this tune, and that made me wonder what ever happened to the original soundtrack to the movie, as I am sure that it will be more enjoyable to listen to… for me. I am going to have to dish out 3* to this album, not because it pains me, but because it saddens me...

i like kate bush's sound a lot, not a bad album.

I'm liking her the more I listen, but still don't totally get it.

This is ok. I can only listen to a few of her tracks before needing a break

Not quite as into this as the previous couple but it's still decent. Some cool experimentation with sounds and styles but it feels a bit scattered too as a result.

Uhh not really hitting for me. Felt more tedious than anything. 2.5/5

Never heard this album by Kate Bush before. I enjoyed it but its just not my cup of tea. Couldn't really get into it.

I haven’t properly listened to Kate Bush before like this so it was good to do so, but I’d be interested to know if this is actually her best album. The experience was enhanced by fog descending on my train journey for the duration of the album so I imagine it’s very much music for certain moods.

I enjoyed this but didn’t think there many standout tracks; I’m a sucker for a single. Stop reading my thoughts Tim.

I listened to this album on the way to a women’s circle for a full moon ceremony and if those are not the perfect conditions to enjoy Kate Bush then I’m not sure what are. I love her voice but this album just didn’t do it for me. There was also some cringe eighties stuff going on.

This album is of fine quality from 1989, timeless in its sounds and I believe it would never sound dated. Kate Bush sings through each track in an almost effortless beauty. Good stuff.

Knew the name, not the music. Cool album, probably won't be revisiting but was nice while it lasted. Sensual World, The Fog, Never be Mine, This Woman's Work were my favourite songs. Did not expect Sensual World to be celtic!

This was my first time listening to Kate Bush besides the Stranger Things song (can't remember the name). The music was lush and grandiose, and she has a very ethereal and beautiful voice. Some of the songs didn't really click for me, but I loved others. I don't think I'll be returning to the album as a whole though. Favorites: "Reaching Out", "Rocket's Tail", "This Woman's Work"

My first proper encounter with Mme. Bush. It’s a very eighties AOR album, isn’t it? I felt so sophisticated for getting The Sensual World and Deeper Understanding. (Mind you, iirc, The Sensual World was a Top 30 ‘hit’, and This Woman’s Work made the Top 40. Popular music has changed enormously over…oh, that was 35 years ago. Sigh.)

This is just a wonderful record - It doesn’t really feel outdated, and if I didn’t know, I would have never guessed 1989. (Well, maybe apart from the lyrics on for example Deeper Understanding) The more I listen to it, the better it gets… and it doesn’t hurt that David Gilmour makes a guest appearance

Some very good stuff here. It’s no Hounds of Love but still worth a try. 3.5 stars.

Not an album I had listened to much, but I really enjoyed it, particularly the title track

The songs are not always convincing and the vocals are not my thing but still a quite reasonable album.

sadly i dont get it

Kate bush rulz

I liked this album and think I'll be listening to it again. It had a slightly tantric feeling, which is also almost on the edge of boring due to repetition. I'd give it 3.5 stars, but that's not an option. The percussion in Track 5 was particularly enjoyable - I thought my cat was getting into something in the other room at first.

I like Kate Bush, and there's some wonderful songs here, however 3-4 tracks in I'm already thinking, change it up Kate. This record does suffer for that overly echoey late 80s production on every track. Conversely, This Woman's Work is possibly her best ever song, certainly in the top 3. That horrible 80s drum sound hugely notable by it's absence.

Took me a while to get into this, but The Fog has some powerful violins which play nicely off Kate's distinctive voice. Interesting song. Didn't connect much with the rest of side one. There's some good slower stuff on the second side like Never Be Mine, probably my favorite track. Lots of different backing instruments, mystical vibes. Rocket's Tail is more guitar based with a surprising groove to it once it kicks off. Dramatic piano ballad This Woman's Work closes the album, but it didn't quite work for me. I listened to this twice and got more out of the early tracks this time but this is just good overall, not great.

A decent album, just lacking any real banger tracks.

Not all of this album lands for me, but the songs that do are nothing short of mesmerizing. For now, those songs are The Sensual World and This Woman’s Work. I feel that Kate Bush is the kind of artist that grows on you, so in the future I might want to rate this higher.

Eating up the egyptian elements (lord help me if they weren’t egyptian but they were cool)

I was hoping for more of a departure cuz she kinda reinvents herself every album, but this felt like it was in the hounds of love comfort zone. Some great songs though.

Unfortunately hounds of love dawgs this album. Pun intended.

Well, it’s certainly a Kate Bush album. This Woman’s Work was a great closer. High 3.

Not much of a Kate Bush fan. This doesn't change my opinion. Not bad, just not for me.

Nothing special.

I just love Kate Bush’s voice. I’m not sure if this is her best record - but there are nice moments and songs.

Enjoyable listen but nothing special. I regret giving "The Dreaming" a 2.5. After giving it several more spins I'd now rate it a 4.

Without women’s work, this is a 2. Production is really cool in places, but it’s struggling under its own weight. Feels a little pompous in places, and slightly scared of itself.

I really wanted to like this album but it never touched me emotionally and at times it just dissappeared into the background. It was never BAD though.

Kate is always wonderful. And also a little mad.

Good stuff

'Hounds of Love' is fantastic, 'Aerial' is wonderful, two albums that would easily make my top 100. I wouldn't put this one in the top 1001 though! Somehow she sounds so much more worthy here, and it's all too lush, over produced, overblown and boring. Even 'The Fog' which I like initially is overdone. One exception, 'This Woman's Work' is so sad but so beautiful. This got me listening to 'Aerial' again, an album that floats and transports the listener. Unfortunately this one is not in the same league!

After Hounds of Love, this album was a bit more mature, with Celtic/Irish Influences. Not bad by any stretch, but even now I have trouble remembering any songs in particular. 3/5

Listened this morning. It was pleasant and easy to listen too. Bush's voice is enchanting, and I liked the way she plays with vocal harmony. Overall I enjoyed it, but nothing really stood out. Just a solid pop album

This woman’s work is so iconic. The rest is just ok

This isn't really my thing, but I do respect it. It's interesting at least. I really like the moodier elements, and some of the more grandiose moments. So much is forgettable for me though, and it mostly wafts along in the background, with a lot of songs blending into each other.

I liked her voice and there were a lot of cool elements to the music. Overall it felt a little dated and didn't really grab me. But there were a few good tracks

It was fine. None of the songs really stood out to me.

This album has few flaws, but I wouldn’t revisit it. All the tracks sound similar, and her style gets annoying quickly. 3

Interesting and kind of beautiful. Her voice is lovely

I actually own this on cd because of Maxwell. I've never really dug it. I've tried a few times. Another musician that others love and I don't get. Maybe one day 🤷🏻‍♂️

I love Kate Bush but this isn't my favorite. Most of the stuff doesn't really stick except for this woman's work. I'm sure if I listen to it more, it'll become one of my favorites but out the gate, eh

I truly despise the late 80s, it ruined many things it dared to touch, including many great artists, and while the finale to Kate Bush's "holy trinity" is still a good album, even as someone who isn't the biggest Kate Bush fan can recognize this is the obvious lesser product. It really does start to grab hold of itself by the final couple tracks, and morph itself into something harrowing, with big moments and revolutionary realizations about the world sonically, but most of the album feels like dated, half-baked ballads with synthesized instruments galore. There's little nuggets of something good buried deep down, but it feels more interested in being the people pleaser, and it can leave me feeling bored over its relatively short runtime. It can drag, but those moments of quality do keep you going, and the reward at the end is worth the time, I'd say, but I can't help but feel that all uniqueness, all quirkiness, all charm, is lost here. This feels like an okay enough late 80s pop record, but it doesn't feel like only Bush could've made it, and that left me disappointed. There is a silver lining, and that's that I'm only more excited to listen to her other projects more, and give them a proper time of day once and for all.

Pop music with an original sound (though quite 80s) and a unique vocalist who can impress and perplex. Kate Bush is somewhat new to me - I’ve browsed a few albums but never dove in deep. I’m not sure how to take this as a whole, there are a few cool songs and wonderful moments but a few that I don’t care much for here as the album started to drag a bit as it went on. Her vocal delivery requires close listening to really tease apart the melodies. But I can appreciate the novelty of what she’s doing and the strengths of this album. There seems to be a surface and deeper layer to this music that can reward casual and repeated listens. Just not sure I really see myself coming back to it much.

A solid album. Didn't have time to give it time. You can't help but feel that she's settled into herself as a person and an artist on this, in a good way. It's mature and thoughtful and well sensual but steps back from the high drama and jumpy jigs of earlier albums. Will return to it.

hard to hate kate but this seems like an inferior retread of hounds of love

Okej album utan de stora hitsen.

Didn't know this one yet and now I know why. It's not a bad album, but I get why it doesn't get noticed between The Kick Inside and Hounds of Love. 3.4*

it’s fine

I preferred Hounds of Love to this, but this was still good. Favorite songs were Heads We’re Dancing, Rocket’s Tail, and This Woman’s Work.

it was pretty good throughout but i was really expecting a little bit more unfortunately

Sensual World is a bit of a slow burn and because I really do appreciate Kate Bush, I gave it a deeper listen on headphones. I did enjoy it quite a bit more on the second listen. It could be a grower that I need to spend more time on, there is some quirky shit going on, specifically her rolling tongue yelps on the closing track. Rocket’s Tail was my favourite track, great energy. Overall it felt a bit dry at times, I will give it more time but for now it’s 3 stars

i could see myself in a mood one day to come back to this album. i honestly enjoyed it more than i thought I would.

3 sterren.

This may have been a little soft for me but it was a decent listen nonetheless.

Cool though a bit uninspired. I wouldn't say this is an essential listen, but if you like KB, which I do, this will put a smile on your face.

Very sensual indeed.

deep purple between two bushes! This one was good too, I liked the surprise of hearing this woman’s work

Unearthly, dreamlike, and as the album title suggests: sensual. Classic Kate

I mean it was fine. Some cool things on it. Not sure I’d pursue it again?

I think this is good and I totally see why people like it, but it's not my style.

The only other Kate Bush album Ive heard was Hounds of Love, which is as clear a 5* as I’ve heard. This isnt as good as that. It does reach some of its heights at times, but I think chunks of it are too experimental without much substance at times. When it’s good though, it’s very good. I just wish I couldn’t compare it to HoL.

Kate Bush is a lot like Bowie, in that the good songs are great but a lot of it is a bit too odd. I thought the second half was a lot better than the first, I was really struggling for the first mins. It's definitely an acquired taste, and not one I think I've acquired, but all in all it was decent.

Great listen

Album 404 of 1001 Kate Bush - The Sensual World Rating : 3 / 5 Good album if the mood is right. Very low key. Nice voice. Nice sounds.

I liked it. This Womans Work was the best for sure - Poggers

Never Be Mine // Rocket’s Tail // This Woman’s Work //

Kate Bush is an exceptional talent, even amongst the exceptional talents of a collection like this. Her voice is magnificent, and the production of this album is off the charts good - but I don't really understand what it's for. I mean, it's not something I can really imagine anyone sitting down and listening to. It's definitely not something to dance to. I can't see a place for it as a soundtrack, and it sure ain't incidental music to have playing while you do something else. So I just don't really get it. I'm sure it's doing something, but I've been left completely befuddled about what that thing is. Other than that, it's Kate Bush. And it's not actively bad. Just - what? I mean, I'd be pretty embarrassed about putting it on if I wanted some sex music. Despite it being called "The Sensual World", it's just not sex music either. So I really - genuinely - don't know where it's supposed to be. And that's kinda sad, because I feel it should be better.

This album is well thought out and masterfully executed. The instrumentation and writing is beautiful. The lyrics are both introspective while also drawing from numerous historic references. Somehow this is still a chore to get through. I find listening to Bush more exhausting than anything else. That feat on its own should be commended, but I can’t this album a stellar score given the fact that I felt no enjoyment at any point throughout this endeavor. 3/5

Kate Bush is very good at what she does, but her style has never spoken to me. It haunts me occasionally, but it's not something I actively seek out.

I wanted to like this one more than I did. I definitely enjoy some of Kate Bush’s music but a lot of this album was too ethereal and seemed to go nowhere.

Kate has a beautiful voice and is very recognizable but she is not someone I listen to often.

I do appreciate Kate's voice and lyrics and the music is very unique, but Kate is not music you listen to lightly. Kate is classical literature that you struggle to understand in a good way. She's hard to decipher. I listened to this mostly in my car without access to lyrics and felt like I only caught words here and there. Come home, read the lyrics, and find out one of the only songs I liked was about accidentally dancing with Hitler. I would like to come back to this one and devote more time to it. It's pretty heavy.

I find Kate Bush's music so extremely structureless that I can never get immersed into her albums. You can mix and match the instrumentals and vocals on these songs and I don't think I'd even notice. It's like the whole album is being held together by Play-Doh and if I move too suddenly, it's going to implode into a black hole. She has a lot of ideas, but all of them are playing at 50% volume. Does that make sense? I dunno, but I can't explain it any better. She's at her best when she's doing literally anything else than the art pop she's best known for. That's why the Irish Folk song "Night of the Swallow" is her all-time best work, and why the, uh, Progressive Bulgarian Rock(?) song "Rocket's Tail" is the best on this album. Same for Björk, who's at her best when she's doing weird fucking electronic alien music for swamp creatures instead of her usual crooning. Basically what I'm saying is that I don't get it.

Needs more than 1 listen....

Okay Kate. I forgive you

Extra half star for effort. But… meh.

Again this list digs deep into the discography of a relatively fringe artist. Simply don't get it. This wasn't un listenable and the production is over the top. She's got an interesting voice.

Cute cover. I wanted to talk about how much this is not-Björk, but honestly I wouldn't even draw a parallel between them if it wasn't for the top review. Deeper Understanding is relatable, I love my 'puter so much.... Sometimes sounds very 80s which I don't really like, but the atmosphere is pleasant. Would not listen to any of these songs outside the album but together they work nicely

hella weird

I really like her voice, even tho this album didn't catched me at all, maybe because i think that is repetitive in some parts.

I wasn’t blown away I’m afraid.

Not my cup of tea. Standard 80s feel, nothing groundbreaking was done on this album.

A very sweet voice and some interesting instrumentation at times. I like it overall, but no songs in particular stuck out to me

Rather tame for Kate Bush.

Some relatively generic Kate, warbles and smooth ethereal music alongside. Not her best but very listenable.

Not bad. A little schlocky. My friends are all reccommending other Kate Bush albums. I may check them out.

"Art-Rock" always concerns me. And this is definitely art-rock. I didn't totally love it. Lyrics hard to understand with her high airy voice. The last song "This Woman's Work" somewhat redeemed it for me. That is a great song. But not enough to get a 4 star.

Her voice is very unique. Toes a like between beautiful and annoying but all in all good

Not huge on Kate Bush but I enjoyed this album more than I thought. I also love a reference to Joyce

This Woman’s Work is one of Kate Bush’s finest songs (which by default puts it on a very high pedestal) The rest of this is not always her most accessible work and suffers accordingly

Not my thing. Never been a big fan of too much bush.

I want to like Kate Bush. I've tried. I know she's super talented and I admire her singular vision. And there are some songs of hers that I really like - Wuthering Heights is just sublime. But overall, her music just doesn't connect with me. Her voice is a bit grating. Compared to all of the Kate Bush I've listened to, this album is very good, but it's still just a 3 star album for me.

Doesn't reach the heights of Hounds of Love, which admittedly is a soaring height to reach, but I just didn't find myself all that into these tracks. Fav track: this woman's work

This one didn't hit for me so much. There was a bit too much glam energy which I've never really responded to, and the dynamics that were so compelling on hounds just weren't here. Two and a half. Fave track: Between a Man and a Woman

Bush is singular in her approach to pop music and that is so appealing. I did find myself less attached to these tracks as I was to those on Hounds of Love. I still enjoyed this, but it proved hard not to compare the songwriting and production to her other work. Fave track: Deeper Understanding

Not my favorite but still nice

I know of one Kate Bush song...and I don't like it. A little nervous for this. I don't hate it but I don't like her voice much. The songs are interesting though...even if I don't really know what's going on. She does have pretty good range though. 3/5 It's mid.

could i write poetry to this? y

It’s a Kate bush album? Airy and a bit cinematic and 80s ish?

"The Sensual World" by Kate Bush, released in 1989, finds the artist continuing her explorations of intricate and atmospheric music. While it retains Bush's distinctive voice and poetic lyricism, the album falls somewhat short of the innovative heights of her previous work. Tracks like the title song "The Sensual World" and "This Woman's Work" showcase Bush's ability to craft emotionally resonant pieces, but the album as a whole lacks the groundbreaking nature of her earlier releases. Scoring a middling 2.5/5, "The Sensual World" is not without its merits, but it doesn't quite reach the heights of some of Kate Bush's more visionary albums, offering a more subdued experience compared to the eclecticism that defined her earlier work.

Ok. Incredible range but her voice was sometimes off putting

Track 1: I liked this song. Track 2: I like the driving energy it has Track 3: I like the strings in this Track 4: I like the big snare hits on this track. Track 5: I like the drums on this so far and Kate bush’s voice is really good. I like the drop out thing that happens too. Track 6: I like the vibe created. Track 7: I like vocal layering in the background. I also like the driving piano. Very 80’s Track 8: just a listen through song for me. Track 9: better as it went on Track 10: kinda slow song to end on but it’s nice especially towards the build up. Overall: 6.9/10. I would listen to this again but I do think I’d listen to other things other than this. I also really like Kate Bush’s voice throughout the album.

Ok in places, irritating in others.

I don’t know much about Kate Bush other than that song from Stranger Things, but this is a good album. Every song is weird enough to keep me intrigued, but not so weird that I want to turn it off. Some of these songs feel like “studio only”. There are a lot of random instruments that wouldn’t be practical to bring on tour, unless you just use a keyboard for them instead. And she also harmonizes with herself a fair bit. Or, they just would sound different live.

Mm, not my cup of tea for the most part, but there's a ton of lush instrumentation here that I can appreciate.

Kjedelig

Best Song: Love and Anger. That belting voice really shines here. I love the rolling drums in the background, which add some tempo and intensity to the ethereal vocals. Worst Song: The Fog. Far too slow and plodding for a voice this powerful. Overall: A spectacular voice that unfortunately too often feels caged in overwrought ballads. I want to hear her belting out every song, with backing tracks that provide the energy needed to compete with that voice.

Fun album. For a first listen it was good 7/10

this was nice enough as pleasant background music. i probably didn't "get it" and it just made me think of bjork, but it was fine. none of the bigger hits i'm familiar with were on here but it was kind of nice to tune back into the songs whenever something interesting started happening, new instruments came in, etc. favorites: the sensual world, the fog, rocket's tail, this woman's work

Didn't quite resonate like Hounds of Love but still had some good tracks.

So I liked this one slightly more than Hounds of Love, though still not a fan. Rocket's Tail with her vocals and Gilmour's solo was very nice.

Kate Bush has flashes of brilliance (This Woman’s Work) and many other very good songs. Very good production, composition in some but some pretty dated sounding stuff too.

Obviously talented and an exceptional vocal talent. I like her style and her embrace of counter-pop, if I can call it that. She has a knack for unique mixing and instrumentation. I think I get lost a bit in the exploration and less than passionate delivery. More or less it’s just not in my camp.

Nothing more sensual than Kate Bush tbh

Sonically interesting. Quite hypnotic in places. Needs repeated listening - feels like a grower… I think there’s a lot to like about it. Not fully sold on the voice but will come back to it for sure

It's fine. I like the other 2 Kate Bush albums that I've gotten on this list more than this one. I don't really get the hype she receives. She's just okay. Not bad, she's got the occasional bop but not much that I care to revisit.

I liked the one where she said she did a program from a magazine

kate’s lyricism and concepts and melancholy are unmatched as ever on this record of mediocre production with no true defining moment or sound. fatigue settles in over the final stretch.

Another good album from Kate Bush. My favourite song of this album was This Woman's Work.

A little bit too adult contemporary for my liking, her previous two were more out there and better for my taste.

It's not a bad album, but it's not very eventful. Nothing really stands out and every song is quickly forgotten.

This is a great pop album, but nothing that really stands out like the previous Kate Bush works.

Fairly unremarkable album. Not bad, not great. Enjoyable.

just a *little too much* like most of Kate Bush for me. 3.

Just wasn't feeling it, but it's one of her weaker albums.

not enough jig

Utmost respect, but I'm not mad for this record

ben plus aimé hounds of love. 5.5/10

Highlights: Love and Anger, The Sensual World. In a nutshell: Soft, moody, sometimes sensual. Not her best but not her worst. I recommend bookending with Kate’s debut The Kick Inside to see how her trademark sound and songwriting has refined over time. Controversial opinion, but would gladly trade Neneh Cherry’s Raw Like Sushi for The Kick Inside. Overall: 5/10

She's terribly good, I get it but I don't understand why this list keeps on pulling the Champions League albums of artists careers instead of the pinnacles. I mean it's nice but it's not my thing and it's a unfocused first listen

Heard before: yes There’s definitely logic in Kate Bush’s evolution from the art-rock woods hippy of her early records to this Peter-Gabriel’d-out version. It’s right there in the lyrics; she embraces progress and technology and is trying to square it with the more earthy world from which she comes. All of the songs are variations on crossing thresholds in search of connection. But the production values are distracting; the move to embrace the 80s-90s AOR sound holds it back. When she pokes out from the wall of DX-7s, with her quirks - her voice, her lyrics, her melodies, or her outright weirdness - it makes a huge difference. Top tracks: This Woman’s Work, The Fog, Reaching Out

This album has aged well.

I read so many comments about how magical and amazing Kate Bush is. She really strikes a chord with some people. I, unfortunately, am not one of them. I don't get it. Good songwriter, nice voice. But the songs just don't speak to me.

Enjoyed it not a great album but a definite middle of the road album

Pop. Tranquilo, aunque un poco aburrido.

Genres: Art rock, art pop Formed: 1978 Run time: 11 songs, 45 min, 56 sec The sixth studio album by the English art rock singer. In general, the album is about the struggles of life, and love primarily from a woman’s perspective. Spotify: Least popular song: >1.3M Most popular song: >49M plays “The Sensual World” details a woman’s progress from a passive observer to an active participant in sensuality. “Love and Anger” is about deeply buried feelings and how the past affects the future if we let it. The feelings prevent relationships from being more than tentative. She wants to share the feeling but feels she can’t. “The Fog” The song talks about learning to swim. The fear of realising you are no longer connected to safety, even though the water is only waist high. The song is a metaphor for coping with life, the feeling of danger even when safety isn’t far away. The fog mentioned in the song is another metaphor, relating to not being able to see what lies ahead in life. “Reaching Out” is about the human instinct to reach for the next thing. "Reaching out for the hand" is about seeking companionship, while "Reaching out for the star" is about trying to grasp the unobtainable. “Heads We're Dancing” explores how easy it is for someone to deceive others. The singer is at a party, dancing with a charming man, who turns out to be Hitler. “Deeper Understanding" is about a lonely person, seeking companionship from a computer. Considering it was written in 1989, it is remarkably insightful and depicts today's world perfectly for many people. “Between a Man and a Woman" is about the relationship between a couple. It is working fine until a third party starts interfering, affecting the balance. Originally, the relationship had a natural to and fro like a pendulum. The song is essentially about staying out of other people's business. "Never Be Mine" is a story of unrequited love and missed opportunities. "Rocket's Tail" is about seeking to escape the mundane at the expense of safety and personal relationships. "This Woman's Work," is about the selfless nature of being a woman. Having to be strong, while others are allowed to grieve or feel sorry. The song was originally released (in 1989) as part of the soundtrack for the John Hughes movie, "She's Having a Baby". It was then included in the album. “ Walk Straight Down the Middle” is about feeling stuck, and unable to make decisions or take action. The album contains well written thought provoking tracks. Listen Again?: No My Rating: ***

In general, I am not a fan of Kate Bush’s breathy, little girl soprano. She’s a terrific lyricist and, to me, many of her songs have this ancient Saxon feel to them. “Love and Anger” is a welcome departure from that. The album seems to go back and forth between songs that kind of rock (“Heads We’re Dancing”), songs that have a lot going on (“The Fog” starts out clear and becomes a muddled mess about halfway through.) and soft love ballads. “This Woman’s Work” is an outstanding example of the ballad. “The Sensual World” is an ode to what must have been some pretty hot sex. “Reaching Out” starts out with some lovely piano and left me wishing she had kept it simple throughout.

60/100

Not for me but I think it is probably very good for what it is trying to be. And you might be asking yourself; then why did 2112 get such a low grade? We all gotta draw a line somewhere. This is firmly on the good side of that line.

Just not my cup of tea. I appreciate some of the stranger tendencies of the production, and I’m truly glad for an excuse to listen Kate Bush. But this record was just meh for me.

Love Kate Bush, but I don’t love this record. It’s not bad and I guess it needs time to sink in but by that logic 1001 albums are never going to be heard before I die. I might one day return to it but it didn’t win me over after the same chance I gave all other records.

Needs a relisten

I love Hounds of Love but this is a lot of Bush.

English Bjork. Not the worst Kate Bush album. Not the best.

My ears and brain pushed this to background music while I drove, thought about other things, and stared out the window. One album of high pitched sameness.

Kate Bush is a key artist of the late seventies and eighties, that's for sure. So a big yes for the inclusion of *Hounds Of Love*, *Never For Ever* or *The Kick Inside* in a list of 1001 essential albums. I know the first is mentioned in the book this app is based on (it has to, that record just aged like fine wine). Can't remember about the other two, though. But when you have striking hits like "Wuthering Heights" or "Babooshka" in your tracklist WHILE ALSO harboring many deeper cuts that are as equally weird as they are wonderful, it means that you wrote an album that people are gonna remember for a long time. You won't hear such enthusiasm coming out from me about *The Dreaming* or *The Sensual World*, though (both are included in Dimery's list, I remember it very clearly). Sure, *The Dreaming* was meant and designed to be, well, "original". Or even "experimental". But what it does instead is mostly sounding weird (and dated). And it does this in such a solipsistic way that it's probably better to leave it aside and let the British singer's hardcore fans enjoy the whole thing on their own. When the line between "off-kilter" and "grating" is crossed so many times in the space of a few tracks, it probably means your little extravanganza could have "calibered" in far more effective ways than it currently is. As for *The Sensual World*, it is a far better work than *The Dreaming* overall, but I'd say its own faults lie in a diametrically opposed direction: the whole thing indeed sounds a little too tame, a little too safe--especially in comparison to the enticing yet strong flavors that its predecessor *Hounds Of Love* had. Not that it's *totally* safe, though. You still have that special Kate Bush touch on the title track, ripe with all its Irish instrumentation. You have the Bulgarian choir for backing vocals on a few songs. You have that mix of sensibility and womanly strength on the touching-yet-stellar ballad "This Woman's Work". Unfortunately, you also have cheesy guitar solos and those oh-so-eighties gated drums (which didn't harm *Hounds Of Love* the way they harmed *The Sensual World*). So it's still a mixed bag for me. Interestingly, Kate Bush re-recorded the key cuts from this album and the one after (*The Red Shoes*) for her *Director's Cut* project. And she changed most of those problematic instrumentations when she revisited all those songs. I take this as some form of awareness on her part that her tunes had been harmed by those exagerated eighties trends. Glad that she "repaired" them, at least. Of course, the other "crime" *The Dreaming* and *The Sensual World* are guilty of is that there's no *real* hit in their tracklisting--no popular song everyone remembers, such as "Wuthering Heights", "Babooshka", "Running Up That Hill" or "Cloudbursting". When your league is the one of pop music--even an artsy form of it--you need to include a legendary track like that in your records if you really you want them to be deemed essential. Otherwise, what's the point of writing pop music, eh? 3/5 for the purposes of this list. Which translates to a 8/5 for more general puposes (5+3). Next, please. Number of albums left to review: less than 500 (I've temporarily lost count) Number of albums I'll include in my own list: half so far, approximately. Number of albums I *might*  include: a quarter, approximately. Number of albums I'll never include: another quarter (many others are more important to me).

Musically this is a really good album. Not a massive Kate Bush fan but can see why this should be on the list.

Really not my kind of thing but I can’t help get caught up in Kates vocalisation. She’s an intriguing artist, I’ll give her that

Her vocals are...interesting.

It was ok

After two listens, I'm unsure how I feel about the album. I'm not a big fan of the music, as it doesn't engage me. It's not bad, but I don't find myself being drawn in. None of the songs have anything catchy. Bush's voice is amazing though.

3.9 - It's like I'm living in a 1980's television commercial for Massengill feminine douche, and, strangely, enjoy it. "The Sensual World" sounds like being seduced by a British MILF - a little different, but pretty hot. I remember Beavis & Butthead panning "Love And Anger" but I like that song, too. "Reaching Out" is weirdly poignant.

Kates sound is pretty unique, well at least it was back then. pretty solid effort

call me crazy but it wasn't bad? much better than the dreaming and hounds of love

I gave Hounds of Love a couple of listens a good few years back after liking some of her singles but could never get into it so never bothered with anything else. The Sensual World gives me similar vibes. Not particularly bad but not particularly great. Pretty even across the board, some decent tracks, some not so decent. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible. Music very 80's but not in a negative way. Pipes didn't really add anything vital.

Similar reaction to the previous KB album: she’s very clever and very talented, but I just can’t get into it. I’m gonna give benefit of the doubt because I only had time for one play through.

Super lush and ultra polished, this is sophisticated and mature songwriting that was released just as I was embracing noisy, energetic and unpolished rock and roll. I had a number of friends (mostly female) who were very much in love with this album when it first came out, but it didn't really click with me at the time. The title track was memorable, but the rest of the album washed over me. Just a bit too smooth for my taste. So, have my tastes matured enough to dig this album? Well, a bit. It's very of the 80s without being too dated (Mick Karn's bass and Dave Gilmour's guitar notwithstanding). It's super tasteful, with a few tweaks that stop it from being pure wallpaper (real drummers, uilleann pipes, Trio Bulgarka, Dave Gilmour tearing it up), but the best moment is probably This Woman's Work, which seems to be the song on this record with the most ongoing resonance. I own this record and appreciate it, but really, I'm unlikely to play it often.

Atmospheric, kind of orchestral feeling pop

1.) Deeper Understanding 2.) Reaching Out 3.) The Sensual World

And I said yesterday that Depeche Mode works with big emotions? Enter Kate Bush. You can’t get much more dramatic than this. Kate Bush seems like the kind of artist who could effortlessly churn out easy pop songs if she wanted but chooses to make more complex, nuanced music instead. I didn’t connect with every song here right away but she does cast an intoxicating, sensual mood. Favorites: “Reaching Out,” "Rocket's Tail" (this one really packs a wallop when the guitars come in!)

vai kotisohvilla toivotaan paskaa albumiaa... no eipä ole heh... lausahdus ''This is proved sonically with this album.'' hyvin sanottu siellä, top reviewssä oli tuommoinen! 6/10 good highlights

Like some of it but got a little old.

Some very pleasing sounds and good song writing, but also some big misses. Odd vocal changeups that sound very off. Appreciate some of the poetry and literary references I found when looking up the album.
