Elvis Is Back

I am not an Elvis fan. THIS IS JUST SO BORING.

Tekst Time is a fascinating thing. When I was born, this album was fourteen years (and two months) old. Yet by then, this music already sounded pretty dated. If you go back fourteen years from now, to 2012, and play some random popular album from that year, you probably won’t hear much difference from the music being made today, AI craze aside. When I was growing up, Elvis Presley was still everywhere, but primarily as an icon from the past. His rather mediocre films would be shown on TV on Saturday afternoons, but prime time had long since become a thing of the past for him. People had Elvis sightings, a phenomenon that seems to have all but died out, perhaps partly because Elvis Aaron Presley, from Tupelo, Mississippi, would now be nearly 92. As everyone knows, Elvis died on the toilet just after my third birthday. A sad end for perhaps the first genuine teen idol, coinciding with the rise of a relatively affluent group of middle-class youngsters with plenty of free time and, for the first time in history, enough pocket money to buy singles, go out at weekends and slow-dance with girls in petticoats or greasers sporting leather jackets and elaborate quiffs. There are plenty of songs on this album to slow-dance to, and that’s immediately its biggest problem. The reason I started by talking about the album’s age is that it sounds so painfully dated that it’s difficult to listen to, let alone put yourself in the mindset of the time and understand why it caused such a sensation. This is particularly true of the slower songs—with one important exception—and the biggest culprit is the backing vocal group, the Jordanaires. Originally a gospel quartet, they accompanied Elvis for a large part of his career. I ran into [the same problem](http://ivo-habets.nl/39-ray-charles-modern-sounds-in-country-and-western-music-1962-6-10/) when listening to music from around this period with modern ears, particularly the backing vocals. The striking thing is that if you move forward just a few years, the music may still sound unmistakably old, but it feels far less dated. The music of 1968 onwards forms such a large part of the foundation of the (non-electronic) music still being made today that it somehow retains its freshness, and is often simply experienced as brilliant. Let’s be honest: not only was the foundation of modern music laid around 1968–72, but that period was also its high point. Of course, the music of those years grew out of what came before it, especially the blues, but certainly also the music of Elvis and his contemporaries. It’s no coincidence that the Clash copied the cover of Elvis’s debut album for their own first record. But that extra step in between makes a world of difference. Think of the Beatles and the Stones, too: their early albums are amusingly dated, whereas *Abbey Road*, for example, would still be a sensation rather than an anomaly if it were released tomorrow. More or less. So this album is a case for the time machine. The solitary highlight is, of course, ‘Fever’, which was already four years old at the time. It was originally written by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell under the pseudonym John Davenport. Two years earlier, Peggy Lee had scored her biggest hit with it—or at least her signature song. Elvis’s version stands out precisely because of its sparse instrumentation: double bass, finger snaps and a little percussion. That, and sending the Jordanaires on holiday, makes the song sound far less dated than the rest of the album. Want a little taste of the evidence? Just listen to ‘I Will Be Home Again’. Go on, then, ‘Reconsider Baby’, the closing track, also raises the level considerably. Here, the instrumentation is noticeably better and more interesting. I’m sorry. Is this another case of blasphemy? Perhaps. To redress the balance a little, let there be no misunderstanding: Elvis was a wonderful singer with a wonderful voice. But, as is so often the case with (proto-)pop music, the dominance of the vocals over the music means I don’t listen to it with much enthusiasm. And there’s no original material on this album—or on his debut, for that matter. Oh, and in case you didn’t know: Elvis was back after two years of military service in Germany, during which he recorded no new music. This album, recorded directly in stereo in a fairly innovative move, was then made in just four days: 20 and 21 March, and 3 and 4 April 1960. As they’d say in Brabant: zodoedegeda (that's how you do it). Perhaps today’s artists, some of whom spend more than a year tinkering away in the studio, could learn something from that. When you hear how quickly all those brilliant records from around 1970 were recorded—a time when releasing a new LP more than once every twelve months was fairly normal—you sometimes wonder whether people nowadays squeeze all the spontaneity out of everything by overworking it. But hey, if they hadn’t invited the Jordanaires, they might have finished in three days!

Can’t go wrong with Elvis

Okay, on some level, I get why this album was included. Elvis is Back! is often cited as the point where Elvis Presley started to mature as a performer, improving his vocal range and diversifying his musical palette during his last few months serving in the U.S. Army. While there are traces of his early rock & roll style on tracks like Otis Blackwell's "Make Me Know It" and "Dirty, Dirty Feeling", the album as a whole is a measured modulation toward traditional pop, R&B, and doo-wop of the time, complete with polished stereo production. I can see on paper how these ingredients combined would make for a very marketable comeback for Elvis. And yet... I don't know; I feel like I didn't get much out of this. After all, it's still another album of mostly cover songs where I can more easily find the originals or better versions of the tracks nowadays. Take the song "Fever", for example; I can go to the Little Willie John original, the Peggy Lee lounge version, or even the rendition actress Nana Visitor did for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "His Way", and find better performances and gravitas than what Elvis offered. I can't deny that Elvis was a good performer, and I recognize that his vocal range has improved and sounded better with this production. But since my standard for covers was set high by someone like Aretha Franklin, it's difficult to think otherwise. If anything, it made me realize how sanitized Elvis's image had become, away from the raucous rock & roll lifestyle of his early output toward a more contemporary outlook. Again, it made for great marketing that Elvis's comeback record sounded this appealing. But as an album to check out decades removed, it was a different lane for him, but not enough to move the needle for me. That's all.

Very samey. Same introduction to virtually every song. Very light. Not the best album to introduce to a non Elvis fan.

Elvis has such a unique and enjoyable sound. Sure, it’s dated. But on a long nighttime drive, this is a really satisfying listen. A 4.

Elvis should have left the building and stayed gone. A waste of 30 minutes with no memorable songs.

Meh. Not an Elvis fan. The only thing I like about Elvis is the fact that none of his songs are more than three minutes long. So when I get a 12 song album I think “well, this will be over quick.“

I find it very difficult to rate albums this old. They just sound like oldies to me. Not good not bad, pretty listenable, but old.

I understand the importance of Elvis in Rock 'n Roll history but I can't bear this collection of schmaltzy songs. Elvis is like a cult and, from the outside, I don't see the appeal.

Alright, so I thought that this may have been his first or second album, but it's the fourth one. Overall, the vibes are alright but not the absolute best. I would say that it's pretty chill having it in the background and it's not bad listening to it.

Ugh I'm struggling with 1001 fatigue and this didn't help. Fever is good but too much balladry and treading water.

I already got Young Elvis (when he couldn't really sing yet) and Tired Elvis (when he couldn't sing anymore) on this generator, and both were huge disappointments. This record, however, is pretty nice. This is Peak Elvis, with enough energy and maturity to dominate the scene and make singing and swinging seem fun and effortless. This will never entirely be my kind of music - not because it's dated, but because I can't quite get past the fact that Elvis was essentially a puppet who never wrote a song in his entire career. He was certainly a fantastic performer with a silky voice, but nothing he did ever really resonated with me on an emotional level. That being said, this record is smooth and pleasant enough, and it works just fine as background music. It also helps that the musicians are very competent, allowing Elvis to really shine here. Not something I'll come back to, but it was a nice way to spend 35 minutes. 6/10

Only got Fever ! Fever hold me tight

Very pleasant to listen to. No real standout track apart from the cover of Fever, but no obvious weak points either. It’s the kind of fairly neutral album I could easily come back to depending on my mood. I like the production too. It really sounds like a product of its time, but in a good way, more like a genuine snapshot of the era than something painfully dated. Clean, efficient and consistently enjoyable. Some tracks are really great, I especially enjoyed the blues And econsider baby among others. Nothing spectacular, but absolutely nothing wrong with it either.

So this album needs context as to why it's here on the list. See I'm listening going there isn't a lot of his hits on this one. It's a pretty standard Elvis album, since there is only three on the list I was confused as to why. Elvis is Back is a play on words. He was back from his stint in the Army. Now I'm not a huge Elvis fan, dude had talent and was a superstar so I was thinking this album would be I don't know bigger maybe? I've not listened to a lot of him outside of a greatest hits album. I'd suggest if you want to listen to Elvis you either invent time travel or go find a greatest hits album.

Yeah, no. I truly like only one song from this album, and Peggy Lee sings it much better. The rest is just Elvis Presley being Elvis Presley - an old time legend.

For a second I thought I was enjoying an Elvis album, but then it returned to mediocrity like I expected. This is probaly the best Elvis album I've heard, but still isn't that great. High 3.

Anytime I get served up an Elvis album, a wave of 'meh' flows over me. I don't necessarily hate him, I definitely hate some of his songs. I'm mostly on board with his Christmas album if I have to put a Christmas album on but mostly I find him to be a character I can't take seriously. I don't even think this dude liked music, he just happened to be a good entertainer and he made himself famous. I'm probably talking out my ass I don't know how I got here. Fever, didn't need to be covered, the original is perfect, this album was fine and mostly forgettable... 3 stars

It's certainly Elvis

What a weird time 1960 must have been. Was going to hold back a star, because I really don't love the ballads, but when it comes right down to it, Elvis was the king.

I like some Elvis. He’s an important artist and you have to remember this is over 65 years ago. This is not his best album or his worst. Giving it 4 stars because I appreciate the music and his place in the history of rock and roll. Plus - he’s just got a great voice!

Shitty, shitty human being, but the man could sing. The voice, the range, the vibe. This easily could have been half an hour of the same song over and over again, but instead we got something varied yet cohesive. This ruled if you don’t listen to the lyrics too much.

Never in the history of rock and roll has an artist received greater accolades while contributing less to music than Elvis Presley. If white people in the 50s knew James Brown existed Elvis would have spent the decade pumping gas in Tennessee and we would all be better for it.

This delivered pretty much exactly what I wanted from Elvis. Some smoother, crooner-esque songs, some rock n’ roll. Not sure there’s much I will return to - great cover of Fever but there are also much better ones out there.

Ok I know the importance of Elvis Presley for the pop music and a generation of people idolizes him. But as some one born years after it looks more about the act, about the person than about the music. And the music is not my cup of tea, despite a nice version of Fever.

It's sort of annoying to me how good the stereo mix on this album is when you compare it to albums cut years later (looking at you, Beatles). It sounds perfect. It's pretty interesting to me how great recording technology was at this time, when reproduction equipment, especially in people's homes, was pretty sub-par. Today, spending a couple hundred bucks on IEMs will get you better sound than any home system could achieve at maybe any price until probably the 80s or 90s. On to the music: uh, pretty good! Not a single disappointing track on the album. His appeal is very apparent. Smooth voice, soulful presentation, and easy to love songs are pervasive throughout.

Elvis is always great.

This is the first time I've listened to an Elvis album. I mean he's way cooler than anything else going on at the time. I enjoyed it.

lovely morning coffee music. going through steamy ballads, proper rockabilly blues, homecoming dance doowop and everything in between kept it fresh, and defeated my assumption that elvis only had the one sound. i don't think there was a track i didn't enjoy at least a bit. favorite song is Such a Night. soft 4

Rating: 5/10 The King's music is...alright. Good for a product of 50's rock and blues music, and it's cool how such an old album is so well recorded and produced. I liked the start, Make Me Know It and Fever were enjoyable, and the rest of the songs were decent but I didn't find any particular highlights. It's all around a bit unsubstantial and doesn't move me

Elvis is back? Where did he go? Or is there missing punctuation? Elvis' Back? Famous for the hips but at least the back got a look in too. To be fair, all kidding aside, this sounds excellent... largely on the account of ardent remastering I would imagine. However, I know more than a small amount of Elvis but only recognize a couple of the tracks on this album, which makes me believe that this is another of those choices made so as to not be obvious. Elvis' cover of Fever is adequate but I'm not sure about it being sung by a male voice, and it essentially feels unnecessary even though it would've driven the ladies wild I'm sure. Such A Night is a very respectable track and the last two tracks end the album well but otherwise quite forgettable. Sorry King.

Wouldn’t seek it out.

Helt ok. Favoriten är Such a night som är väldigt bra. Elvis är som bäst när han får ta i lite och använda sin fantastiska röst till mer än bara "crooning". Jag är väl inte Elvis största fan men har absolut uppskattat massor av de låtar han sjungit genom åren. Detta album var lite trist här och där men man kan ju inte säga annat än att Elvis hade en galet bra röst.

Oh yeah Elvis with your devilish swinging hips, never heard a song from this album before but one can get why you got so popular, good presence and nice production. Best track: "Such a night", you get both the famous tremolo vocals plus a surprising belting in the middle of the song which was quite uncharacteristic and pleasant.

Aggressively pleasant music. I actually liked this more than I thought I would. It's great kitchen music which is a blessing and a curse...this generator has given me a metric shit ton of great kitchen music already, so am I going to listen to this again? Probably not. But I really did like it. Just not something I'll ever reach for on my own.

I understand that Elvis was huge during this period and I mostly know his music from what you hear without looking. He has some good songs but none on this album. Its just, kinda boring?

An enjoyable listen, it's certainly of an era but no worse for it

There's all sorts of Elvis songs and moments I enjoy but this did not seem to have much to do with them. I don't know an alternate album to suggest... I most enjoy his early Sun Records stuff which was before the LP era. Anyway I am sure I would have preferred to spend 40 minutes with him in some other format.

Elvis Is Back is a pretty okay album. It's no secret that i'm definitely very familiar with Elvis (who isn't at this point) This album however doesn't really seem to have any of the songs that i know from Elvis. The general sound of this album is decent and around the same level as a lot of the other rock and roll artists that i have looked at. I also feel that it suffers from basically the same issue as a lot of the others do. That issue being that every song sounds the same with barely any notable differences which just causes a lot of them to become very unmemorable. It is a perfectly okay listen but it does barely anything to stand out in a sea of albums like it. Best Song: Such A Night Worst Song: Reconsider Baby

It’s good! The songs are better than what I used to think of as “Elvis songs.” I’d like to look more into how Elvis stole from Black culture, though. Then maybe re-listen to see if I can hear the influence.

I'm not very high on this. The post-Army era of Elvis seems to be a real mixed bag for Elvis and outside of a few tracks here, I found this kind of cheesy. The "Fever" cover is undoubtedly the highlight. 2.5 stars.

While going through the 1001 albums, I've tried to take each project at face value, without any surrounding context. Just listen to and judge the music as it comes. However, the context behind Elvis and his music just can't be ignored for me. The appeal to Elvis Presley is not anything he's recorded. His music is very dry, diluted, and boring. The appeal for Elvis Presley is his performance and his appearance. He's even quoted with saying, "I don't know anything about music. In my line, you don't have to." Many interpret as him being raw, and 'feeling' the music. I interpret this as him not actually caring about he roots of where his genre of music came from, and him being more interested in his fame and popularity at the time. And, he was very popular. It's been said that before Presley, there was nothing. An exaggeration, for sure, there was plenty before Presley (namely, people of color, but let's not get into that right now). He was a pioneer that popularized a new kind of music in America. And for that I give him great credit (But only slightly). As for this album, hard pass for me.

Young Elvis

Well, whaddya know. The ink is barely dry on my Buddy Holly review, in which I claimed he had more talent in his little finger than Elvis, and the list immediately throws me an Elvis album as if to prove me wrong. The statement stands. Although I should probably qualify it. Elvis had no MUSICAL talent. The talent he DID have was looking good, wiggling his hips about, and making 13 year old girls damp. And if you can do that then you can sell them any old shit. (Harry Styles will attest to this) I love a good show, and I’d genuinely like to have seen Elvis live in the ’50s to understand what all the fuss was about. But this is an album list, and Elvis Is Back! is an album of bad covers and boring dross, written by other people and seemingly designed to keep teenage girls thinking about Elvis until the next concert. Whatever magic Elvis had, I’m not hearing much of it here.

I drove past a dead cat in the road while I was listening to Such A Night. This album definitely leans more pop than theast Elvis album I listened to, but that's not a bad thing. Not quite as many incredible hits as the self-titled, but Elvis' vocal charisma still carries him far, especially paired with catchy pop and occasionally blues and rock production. With the amount of crooning love songs on this album, it was definitely aimed at the audience of young girls who missed Elvis while he was in the war, but the end product is good regardless of how obvious the motivation behind it seems. Highlights: Make Me Know It, Fever, The Girl of My Best Friend, I Will Be Home Again, Dirty, Dirty Feeling, It Feels So Right, Reconsider Baby

this was actually very lovely for playing bananagrams this morning, i enjoyed the first half more- reminded me of lilo and stitch LOL- creepy thing, my first word was feverish, as i went to look up if i spelled it correctly, the song fever had JUST come on, very funny coincidence!

Interesting, a bit more varied than back-to-back 12BB and doo-wop (e.g. Fever, very minimalist with a jazz-like bassline) Girl of My Best Friend is a decent doo-wop track. Ugh, lyrics to Dirty Dirty Feeling are a bit rough. Hmm, about halfway through and we're into ballads .. yawn Yeah, at the start I thought we were getting something a bit edgy, but it didn't materialise. Best track - Fever 3 stars

Highlights: Make Me Know It, The Girl of My Best Friend, Thrill of Your Love, Soldier Boy, Such a Night, The Girl Next Door, Reconsider Baby Hooo momma! Nothing crazy, just standard Elvis. Nothing deep, just teen rock and blues. I don't know how much of this is covered material, but it doesn't matter. But it was actually a pretty good package with a strong second half, featuring one of my top 3 Elvis songs - "Such a Night".

Never got the hype

Elvis-scepticism remains... Kicks off with some cracking work by the Jordanaires, but covering Fever is a foolish move. Elvis ballads are boring, but the doo-wop stuff can be good - see Thrill of Your Love, Soldier Boy. Maybe I just like the Jordanaires?

I am annoyed by how many people on Youtube are saying that Elvis was the best blues singer of all time. This is insulting to the individuals that originated the blues. I was pretty bored by this album.

Another example of the surprising range and influence Elvis had, and another artist who I think had their fame and image actually distract from their music. There was a strong do-wop things going on which I liked. I am still apprehensive to jump on the bandwagon of calling Elvis one of the greatest of all time, but I am gradually being won over to include him in the conversation.

I was surprised when From Elvis in Memphis was generated because I was expecting a much more dated and somewhat corny rock and roll sound, but actually found some amazing production and grand performances that I really enjoyed. Elvis is Back falls much more in line with what I was expecting from an Elvis record. There's still amazing production here, but it just feels a lot more dated and the pop ballads are absolutely some of the corniest tracks I've heard. That said, there were some really cool tracks that stood out to me like Fever and Reconsider Baby. Overall, I appreciate his influence on rock and roll and I am happy to have heard this album, but I'm not going to be returning to it.

I don't really see the appeal of Elvis. He is fine, but honestly he is fine and so is this album.

Most of these songs are corny. Many artists have done Fever. I think I like Peggy Lee’s version better. Ray Charles does a good version too. Dirty Dirty Feeling has a swinging beat. He’s gonna chain her to the wall? Okay then. Such A Night had a good bopping tempo. It Feels So Right is the right idea but just doesn’t feel quite right. He has a few blues songs on here but the last song, Reconsider Baby is the best. Mostly cuz of the sax. Overall these songs lack the old time rock n roll energy of his earlier songs and lacks the hot sweaty passion of his later Vegas years.

I was surprised to only know one song on here, his cover of Fever. In its absence of iconic hits, this just felt like an old-timey album that was hard to relate to. It's still Elvis, so that gives it a bump, and it's cool that it's kind of a celebration of his return from military service, but it was overall just ok to me.

Elvis IS Back! (From the Army). And it's like he never went away. Twelve slices of prime Elvis, though no instant classics, a nice mix of rock-a-hula and slower burners. Definitely worth a listen.

Elvis got that thing. It doesn’t matter some tracks are schmalzy and idiotic. Elvis makes the air vibrate with anticipation and lust.

This is a great, the voice, the control, the variety. Spot on musicians and the vocal harmonies from the Jordanaires. The move from youthful rebellion to stylised mix of the blues, pop, R&B, gospel and rock. No hits, as they were singles weren’t on tha albums usually, just a cohesive album of music. Reconsider baby is worth price of admission, unlike most white rockers doing the blues there is a naturalness to his delivery likely from his own upbringing in Memphis poor side, no affectations just purity, and the backing from Boots Randolph and Floyd Cramer is stellar. 5 Star for the music here and not hating on the idea of Elvis, the icon.

Excellent album from the king!!

12 songs My first Elvis album, before listening to this I knew only the greatest hits. It's nothing to write home about, and definitely not worth fainting over, but it's not bad either. Just a middle of the road album.

Honestly, Elvis sounds so good on this. It’s just great, high-energy old-school rock and roll, and it's a really fun listen from start to finish.

How did I manage to get my second Elvis album in the span of 2 days the odds feel really weird on that one. I think with me having literally just listened to 'Elvis Presley', it's kind of confirmed an initial thought I had, which was that Elvis is not so much a musician, rather, he is more a recording artist I feel. Other than his singles, I just don't really find his catalog, particularly strong. And with this album I felt that the singles were much weaker. I'm not saying this is a particularly bad album. It's not egregious in any distinct way, but it has no hook that interests me. I really can't remember most of the songs after listening to them and I can't really comment on much more than that. I just don't feel Elvis really has a POV, and I just feel that Elvis as a character is more interesting than Elvis as an artist. Fav Track: The Girl Of My Best Friend

Even putting aside my moral objections to Elvis as a person, this album was dull and repetitive.

This is a really really good Elvis album, maybe my favorite I've heard as far as the music production and arrangements go. Lots more intimate, but not quite as boundary pushing. Bumping it up to a 4, which I think it deserves, but I consider a 3 because I really place a premium on boundary pushing.

Yes Elvis. From the time when record companies ruled the roost and artists were product. Sounds like Elvis. Fever still a great song. I've been to the Elvis festival held once a year in Parkes, NSW. Thats Australia for you. Like this album not in a hurry to visit it again.

People, we are in for a relic. I can’t say it’s good, but I see the importance. Elvis’s voice is really very pretty, if a bit polite, and the backup singers are the same. It lacks soul, and it is often vapid and unimportant in a way that isn’t very enjoyable, but it can also be pleasant enough. Has some very nice piano and drum tones, and it’s pleasant-ish. No, I did not enjoy this album very much, but I have no hard feelings toward it. 5.4/10

#395 For the most part, this is a bunch of short, quaint love songs, or often about cheating or being cheated upon, very of the time, 50s style, sort of doo-wop. It’s all fine but kind of boring too, not what I would think is essential listening, even if Elvis is essential listening. If the album was more like the bluesy closer, Reconsider Baby, I’d have a different perspective, although it pulled it up to 3 stars. Why did he have to come back? 😢 I don't really care that most of the tracks are covers. It's just that they're all worse than the original. "Fever" in particular is one of my favorite songs from this era, and this is one of the worst renditions of it that I've heard.

I liked the 50's sound of the music!! Nothing really hooked me though.

Smooth vocals, fun rhythm and flow. It actually surprises me that after 100 albums, this album still strikes me as unlike anything else on the list thus far. I had never sat down to just listen to Elvis before, and it didn't disappoint.

As usual, Elvis expertly tailors his voice to the material and squeezes every drop of emotion out of these numbers but lordy, what a weak set of songs he has to work with on this collection. Aside from the indestructible "Fever" and gritty "Reconsider Baby", this stuff is Corny with capital "C". The hokey, over-the-top backing vocals by the Jordainaires are also a big gloppy mayo-laden scoop of potato salad next to that corn. Guh-ross.

Theres only so many times you can listen to Elvis say the words “love” “girl” and “kiss” 5 / 10

i actually really loved this! i feel like elvis has never really clicked for me...like i could always hear why it was foundational but it was never compelling to me personally. but this was really fun and catchy and had a lot of variety, and i can actually see myself listening to this one again. An Elvis album but without any of his hits?

The production is incredible for the age. Sounds so clean and warm. I probably wouldn't have this on regularly , but it's solid as heck. Favourite tracks: Make Me Know It, The Girl of My Best Friend, Dirty, Dirty Feeling, Such a Night.

the fourth album released by rock and roll king elvis presley. the title of the album refers to elvis coming back to recording songs after serving in the military for two years. this is also the first album from elvis recorded in stereo. elvis has the kind of pop rock music that's the true median of what was considered popular among youth at the time. some lean into more rock, some are dancey, some are sweet slow ballads... a lot are reallll lovey dovey. a good amount of ground is covered in general in its short runtime. like him or not, elvis has a charm that would make any girl swoon. i can't let my own biases stop me from disliking this album so much and dismissing its significance. this album was alright. as much as i don't like old school rock and roll, there's a reason why elvis is known as the king. this album gets a pass. give me some sugar, mama.

I'm not familiar with most of these Elvis songs. He always brings it though. I always think of him and Sinatra as the ultimate, and maybe last great, interpreters of songs that others wrote without apology. Now you have to be a songwriter of record, even if it means there are thirty writers on each song (Beyonce was an integral part of the process on all of those songs, I'm sure). Fever is a good song, although I like the Peggy Lee version much better. Elvis had a great voice. Dirty, Dirty Feeling has a Yakety Sax vibe. Elvis is the original pop star, there is no politics in this. These songs all kind of blend together unfortunately...it becomes "Generic Elvis Song" after a while.

Thoughts before listening: I've never really been an Elvis guy. I mean some of his songs are classics that I enjoy hearing from time to time, but I've never thought to myself "you know what, I could really go for some Elvis right now." Looking at the tracklist on this album, I don't see any of the standard Elvis hits, so I guess we'll see how strong Elvis' deep cuts are. Review: So this is undeniably the Elvis sound: 50s pop rock with a bit of a country twist and the instantly recognizable vocals. That being said, there are some stylistic curveballs in here. For instance, I was pleasantly surprised to see a cool, jazzy cover of "Fever" as the second track, and a few of these songs continue in that jazzy vibe by adding horns to the mix. All in all though, I'm missing the big, iconic hits on this one which means the best I can do is a 3.

The musical equivalent of Starbucks. I feel like I should like it, everyone else seems to sing its praises; it is a household name and apparently a trailblazer in their field; it opened up the game for more artists who wanted to copy them. But when it comes down to it... it's basically just a shitty cup of coffee. Its bland and lifeless. I can see why people loved it when they first tried it, as it was like nothing they had had before. But essentially new coffee does it better, this is just a brand name and tired.

I actually like 6 songs of the 13 from the original release, with stand-outs being: Fever, It Feels So Right, Like A Baby, and Reconsider Baby. Otherwise, just crap. Because of those pathetic/bathetic songs, at best this is 3 stars. But really, as an album, the best/worst of Elvis (who I don't like at all), I can only give 2 stars because the bad shit is so fricking bad. Historically bad crap.

Elvis Presley possessed a vocal talent unlike any other white artist in the 50s. That adjective is important. He was excellent at interpreting other people’s music, specifically the rock and roll pioneers Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Big Mana Thornton. Derivative as he may have been, his voice was still one of the best on the radio and it showed in all his top ten hits. But there are few, if any, of those hits here. This is a comeback record, that doesn’t really stack up to it’s predecessors. Elvis was more of a movie star by the time this album came out. I don’t think the song choices were particularly good, especially Fever, which belongs to Peggy Lee so much that even Elvis couldn’t offer anything to add to it. The music is good: it’s pleasant early 60s pop music. It just doesn’t feel as fresh as Elvis’ previous output or as welcome as his music after the 68 Comeback Special. After reading about the album, the singles released at the time were some of Elvis’ best work. Stuck On You, Are You Lonesome Tonight, and It’s Now Or Never are classics that were puzzlingly not on the album. With these tracks, this could easily have been a 5 star album. Without them, it’s a curiosity (Elvis’ first album recorded in stereo) 3.5 stars

What can I say, it's Elvis. Pretty classic. I've listened to a decent amount of Elvis but I haven't heard most of these songs before (with the exception of "Fever"). Pretty fun.

The thing about Elvis' albums is that you get 1 or 2 notable songs at most and then the rest is whatever filler they had lying around. This one is no different, in fact I'd argue it is particularly scant as far as hits are concerned. We got Elvis' pretty good version of "Fever" and... nothing else? Maybe some other of these songs became famous in its day, but alas that fame seems to be lost to time. Key tracks: Fever

His voice is good and the music is good, but there is just something that doesn't work for me. Elvis has always sounded "old' to my ears. I absolutely love some of his work, but not this, although, I did enjoy his rendition of Fever.

There's exactly one song on here that I really liked, that would be Fever. That's about it. He's clearly a very good performer, taking songs he didn't write and making them his own. He's a great singer, especially when he is /not/ doing that one voice that everyone imitates nowadays. But that's about it for me. This album as a whole...I wanted more versatility, more expression outside of that one cool song.

Damn, Elvis really is back, isn't he? This is the last time though seeing as this is my third and final Elvis album of the project. How do I feel about it? Well, it's probably my least favorite of the three, but it's still not bad. I've talked in length about the importance of Elvis Presley as a public figure more than anything else about him, so I'll just skip past that for redundancy's sake. The music on this album is okay. The arrangements are nice, but it is still fairly standard 50s-early 60s rock and roll, which has never been my favorite. I'd say this is my least favorite of the three because it doesn't really have any highlights like the best songs on the other two. This album doesn't really have anything on the level of "Blue Suede Shoes" or "In the Ghetto" for me. The closest it comes is probably "Such a Night," which I do like, but it's not quite as great as those other songs. Other than that, this is pretty much another Elvis album. Some parts haven't aged super well, but it could be much worse in that regard as well as every other regard. The album's nice, but not my favorite. 3/5.

I've heard it said that you're either a Beatles person or an Elvis person - you can like both or neither, but you'll prefer one, and I prefer The Beatles. I can appreciate Elvis's importance but the style impresses me less than the content. I've also heard it said he was never the same after the army, and this shows it. Fever is one of my favourite songs and his version is fine, but doesn't come close to Peggy Lee's. The other songs are fine but inoffensive rather than interesting. A strong 2.

I am certainly no Elvis Presley expert or fan. But from the albums I've heard I think the early Elvis Presley albums are the good ones. The later ones are simply fame and fortune. The early ones are quite good music, though very much pop. I wouldn't put an album on but when listening to this one I really thought that maybe I should listen to him more often.

Rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and pop built from lively guitar work, tasteful piano, swinging rhythms, and commanding vocals feels like watching a master craftsman casually demonstrate skills he no longer needs to prove—effortless, confident, and mostly enjoyable. Unfortunately the energy and Charm don't last me more than two songs.

I love Elvis as an icon, and I like a lot of his well known tracks. To be honest though, I find this pretty dull. I like the upbeat songs best, but don't like his vocals enough to enjoy the ballads.

I love Elvis, but couldn't they just have added one or two comps of his (with RCA and Sun) and just be done with this? Yes, maybe it was a success commercially and culturally speaking for the album format, as it sold a lot after Elvis returned from his forced military service abroad. But it wouldn't be the best introduction to Elvis at all! It shows he was already great at this point, but why are comps not allowed on this list? Do they not count as albums or something? Some of the best releases ever are comps!!

Dear reader if you've come across this review and are kind of lost on the story you should go and see the reviews that I left for the Rolling Stones. It is a good bit of back story in there. Much like the Rolling Stones and the main character of the play I saw when I was in college called "The Importance Of Whiteness" the entire track of Elvis is based on stealing black music. Record executives were very much 'if we could find a white man who sings like a black man we'll make a million dollars'. Elvis is that white man. It does not take away from the music, you just need to understand that he stole it and made it OK for white people, at the time, to like it.

It will always and forever be fucking hilarious that they actually committed to sending Elvis to the military against his will. BTS-type situation. Anyway he seems to have done okay for himself on the comeback album

I respect Elvis, his legacy and works. But this album is pretty dated. I'm sure it went hard at the time, but I have to confess that it didn't really stick with me.

But i am listening to this and wondering why this is on here. Great production. Great back band. Elvis is Elvis. The Jordanairres he used for years before, so nothing new. Its not a gospel album that highlights a break from previous or a new direction. Maybe its that it is the last before a long line of movie related albums? Anyway, not bad, some good session musos, a nice blend ofcountry, rock, blues, gospel, Elvis’ voice in fine firm, lovely dreamy production, but a bit snoozy for me. I’m sure it spawned a thousand knock offs but then Elvis is arguably a knock off himself. I love Elvis, big fan but he really is an artist where a compilation tape is better than the albums.

I still prefer the tracks that hint at that earlier rock sound; like Dirty, Dirty Feeling. Though I LOVE the soul offerings like It Feels So Right. His cover of Fever is surprisingly great, more or less following in the style of Peggy Lee's version. All-in-all this is a really enjoyable record, and I have always loved this style and era of music. I have mixed feelings on Elvis though, since he was basically the originator of the music industry manufacturing a "superstar" by using a pretty face and charismatic entertainer to sell music that other (more talented) people created.

This album is a bit boring. I arrived late to the Elvis party but tend to like his sadder, more soul infused music.

Fine. I can appreciate what an impact Elvis had on music but he’s not someone I sit down to listen to. Just an okay album imo.

meh. I get he was trying new sounds after being in Army, but it's little boring...at least for an Elvis album.
