Space-y
Again, I love music that sounds like it’s meant to soundtrack the character select screen of a PS2 fighting game. Unfortunately, Snivillisation is also a pretentious trance album targeted at the club kids who fried their brains on acid and think rambling about their 101-level misinterpretation of Buddhism means they’re enlightened. That doesn’t mean that there’s not any bangers in here – there are a good, hefty amount of excellently layered dance cuts here, especially in the middle. Those highs are just unfortunately overpowered by the annoying, longwinded highs of an equal number of pseudo-psychedelic tracks. And those songs insist upon themselves. Even if Orbital had one more club track to replace one 15-minute existential monotonous tangent that you’d only listen to if you were in the middle of a past life regression and couldn’t hit skip, I’d be praising this album. As it stands, though, it’s half getting high with the club v. half getting high with the cult, and I only really vibe with one of those.
not my cup of tea.
conclusion: techno the youtuber is better than normal techno somehow (i know his full account name is technoblade but it's just for a somehow weird comparison) the first ten minutes feels like 2 hours while the music beeps and boops and then it beeps and boops in a danceable way although danceable, the rest of the beeps and boops make 1 hour sounds like half a day 3.5/5
Good background music
I'm not sure that listening to album-length works while sitting at my desk writing emails is the optimal means of enjoying 90s techno, but this was pretty enjoyable given the circumstances. Album flowed nicely. 3.5
2.5 stars. Chilled out vibes. No classic standing out though.
Well, ambient techno. I have Orbital occasionally in my Apple Music curated playlist, so some of the tracks on Snivilisation were familiar to me. It's nice background music, but nothing I'd listen to intentionally.
Never heard of this artist. Just by the name of the artist, had a feeling it was going to be mainly instrumental and almost electronic. Pretty cool.
it was ok. Vocals over electronica are a no go for me
I think my productivity went up whilst listening to this so might be one for the occasional work rotation, but found it a bit tedious at times.
Luke warm tea
I’d say this is a reigned in album from the bothers when compared to other albums from the duo which could be perceived as a little too frantic for some. Because of this it would be a great introduction into the techno world of Orbital. 30 years old, and these days dare I say it sounds quite iconic of those raving years…orbital highly influenced the genre of electronica. Nice to hear this album in full again, think I may have bought this on cd in a charity shop for a quid in the early noughties ! A quid well spent.
eh
Nice one
its alright all these weak ass idm albums that this websites been giving me have made be realize how good aphex twin is. i like the marimba sounding synth thing on science friction a lot the way it bounces around my ears is very enjoyable not gonna lie
Bien
Too much all at once, but definitely groovy and DEFINITELY original!
Honestly not that bad. It's long, but it's easy to have on in the background.
Bit weird but funky
I guess if I were to get into EDM, I'd probably like this?
A far more engaging electronic album than The Prodigy album of the same year.
Si ascolta volentieri.
Favourite tracks: crash and carry; are we here?
Not gonna lie...the second half isn't bad
Alkuun otti hetken lämmetä, mutta varsin rentoa konemusaa ja ainakin työpäivän taustamusana toimi kivasti. Voisi olla ihan mielenkiintoista tutustua muuhunkin tuotantoon joka ainakin oman suoratoiston perusteella on kerännyt merkittävästi enemmän kuuntelijoita.
Forever // Sad but True // Kein Trink Wasser //
3.5★. Liked this a lot, and more than Orbital 2. A little too repetitive to be actively listened to in its entirety, but at the same with enough flashes to steal your attention at intervals.
Hard to rate this one - there are some parts when its really captivating and interesting, and others where it seems to be a bit drawn out. An interesting listen nonetheless and I could see myself maybe coming back to this at some point
Really enjoyed it but a tad long in the end which knocks it down from a 4 star.
meh
I don't think this is Orbital's most important album.
Not impressed
Good
Soundscape, background music. Very repetitive, but enjoyable in parts. The last piece, "Attached", while very long, and, repetitive, was pleasantly mesmerizing.
Musical. Estaba bien, pero un poco repetitivo. Ambient-techno.
Not bad as background music, but not interesting enough to be more than that.
I think this band should have only gotten one spot on this list and it should have been this album. Much better than the last one!
I think I like this album? I really wasn't expecting that given 1. it's electronic, and 2. over an hour. But the more time that passes with this, the more it branches out in different directions. Plus I like the lil character on the cover.
Was nice background listening while I did chores. I'm ignorant about techno and it's not really my cuppa tea, but there was a clear level of artistry on display on this album. 3.5
I actually don't understand what makes this such a low-rated album when all of the other electro albums I've encountered get decent reviews. It sound the same, just slightly different. It uses less sampling and has a more upbeat tone to it, which frankly, I prefer. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you this is decent music, but compared to other albums of its genre, it gets the job done.
I’m a fan - this when it came out blew my mind a bit there are some fillers on here but it’s a solid album
Both electronica and ambient can do something more than just being a background filler. Clearly, they just played safe here, creating such an unremarkable work.
I like the downtempo and ambient parts, for sure. The rest... Well, I didn't find the more inaccessible parts to be as grating as others have. That's all I'm really inspired to say about this album—yes, sadly, I don't have any unrelated stories to tell about nearly having sex in a Joker costume. What a shame.
Good electronic album, great beats, no particular highlights.
Cyberpunk-esque electronic music. Not typically a fan but I enjoyed most of it, funny enough
Well, it’s not my favourite genre and sure enough it lost my interest a couple of times, but overall I thought it was decent, with a good variety of sounds. I enjoyed the gentler and more ethereal synths (like on Science Friction) the most. I haven’t seen any evidence to suggest that this particular Orbital album was of great importance, so I’ll score it 2.5 stars, but based on personal enjoyment I’ll charitably round up.
An interesting album and music style. I liked Crash And Carry, Are We Here? and Sad But True.
25 years ago, The Box held epic status in my mind. I never pursued further listening from Orbital. Finding this on my list yesterday, made me wonder if I made a mistake. I suspect they have some great albums, but this one never really separated itself from other albums from the genre. A little disappointing, but not awful.
I get The Orb and Orbital mixed up, and I sort of groaned when I saw this album pop up on the 1001 list. I was thinking it was a different album by The Orb which I had heard, but this was actually a new one for me. Orbital are a bit more upbeat techno compared to The Orb’s more ambient sound, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much Snivilisation drew me in throughout its runtime. I think it’s actually my favorite of the 3-4 Orbital albums I’ve heard so far.
Bleep. Bloop. Bleep. Boop. This was okay but honestly just not really for me.
An interesting listen.
Great focus music
Can't say I hated it, but I didn't love it either.
this was a 75 minute long techno album so it wasn’t really meant to be listened to alone with earbuds in. it was cool at times though which made it less tiring than it could have been
Blorbital
Bleep bloop
Nice and mellow.
The second song reminded me of a book I read as a kid called "I Wish that I had Duck Feet". This book traumatized me cause they threw the kid in a zoo at the end. Like why would they do that, he's a little boy, don't lock him in zoo jail!! Also this album was fine.
Heard one orbital song pretty much heard them all, but it’s a pretty good song.
ok background music
What does God say? Very groovy sometimes. Wacky but interesting. Good background while I worked. 7/10
Not bad, just got a little annoying to listen to after some time
Indie Soundtrack vibes, got a bit seinfeld effect'd
Reminds me of a 90s PS1 racing game soundtrack
3.75
My toe was tapping and head bobbing at time. Great album to get some shiat done. Some beep some boops
the squishy sounds at the end of Forever made me shrivel inside out, but I was vibing for the rest of the time. Quality Seconds are probably the most quality seconds of the whole thing
Quality Seconds rips and makes me wish the entire album sounded just like that. Then the next song is an unforgivable 16 minutes long.
It's OK - not likely to go back to it
I think this album had all the ingredients to make a super cool, chilled out electronica album that I would've really enjoyed. But given the infancy of the genre as a whole, I think Orbital gets carried away with the experimentation in what they COULD do, neglecting what they SHOULD do.
A few euphoric electronic highs here, but the overall trip is a bit up and down.
Nice beeps and boops but doesn't leave an impression.
At first I thought it wasn’t for me but it definitely turned in to a vibe! Felt like doing on beat body rolls while walking through a club. Sounds like a soundtrack to a 90s porno film though but in the best way possible.
This album helped me realize why I don't tend to like albums like this. I'm trying to analyze them rather than just sit back and enjoy the music. I don't need the full 12 minutes to make a general analysis and don't tend to seek out the genre. So I find myself forced to listen to the remainder of the song.
Wierd men også chill
Genre: IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), techno, ambient techno, downtempo Standouts: Are We Here? Others: Sad But True, Crash and Carry, Science Friction, Kein Trink Wasser, Quality Seconds 3.5
pretty rad but some loops get old. 1 hour album but feels like 5 hours
I think I understand why people like this music. The songs each have a different vibe, more so than most EDM. Not all of them are good. The songs are repetitive, but they still manage to build tension. The last 2 songs are way too long. Favorite song: Kein Trinkwasser
Not a 4 but not a 2
I made pancakes and listened to this. It worked. Would definitely cook to this again.
Orbital has a new fan.
This was classic 90s raver music. I cant say I would know which band this was, let alone name a song, but it is instantly recognizable. Also my wife is a big fan.
Dug most of this for sure.
classic of the chill out tent 2.6
good ambient album
Not really my kind of thing, but makes good background music while working.
This was pleasant enough at first, but quickly wore out its welcome. Way too long, and it started to get irritating. Would’ve been better without the vocal samples. Best track: Kein Trink Wasser 2.5 rounded up
Fun background music
Yeahhh
Would like to give it 4 stars but it's just too long and blends into the background too much.
Some interesting songs and some very annoying ones. Overall there are better 90s electronic albums
Weird electronica. Definitely has its place - on a very late night/early morning in a dark room with strobes flashing... can see how its influential
Haven’t heard of this. Electronic album from 1994 so am curious. Interesting - not great but not bad either. A solid 3.
A whole lot of beeps and boops. Not really my thing
Before I listen: I've never heard of this group and have no clue what to expect. I see that its 1hr20min in duration. Could be in for a good time or a bad time. Its rainy and slow day at work so ill listen while I do some cleaning and organizing. Released in 1993 is insane. They were ahead of their time. I have been an electronic music enjoyer for about a decade. Daft Punk is my #1 artist of all time and I also enjoy Mezerg. I believe the two groups drew a lot of inspiration from Snivilisation. I love that this album is included in the 1001 albums to listen to before i die.
Very Gimes-y; synth
Better than the other Orbital album on this list but still a bit dated
Good background music.
I'm pretty picky when it comes to electronic music. This was fine, but didn't really stand out to me at all. It all plays like soundscapes to me, which I'm sure some people love. I find it sort of long-winded and boring for the most part. It's fine, but doesn't move me.
The first half is some nice chill electronic music, had chill vibes and the vocal blips are fun and fitting. The second sounds way worse though, weird production decisions, I suppose. It’s ok.
Fun
Not bad. I actually appreciated some of their other top songs over this album in particular though.
I happened to listen to it whilst I was in the gym. As gym music it was great...but I think I would have got bored of it mid-album in any other environment.
Very good electronic album, sounds ahead of it's time. Nothing really stands out but overall a nice listen
One of the most engaging electronic albums I've heard from this list! Great production, catchy beats and melodies. I really liked the main keyboard part on "Kein Trink Wasser." Record felt a little long though, especially with the last two songs being over 10 minutes each but other than that, I really enjoyed this listen.
This was a rather unobtrusive techno album. It's notable for its ambient techno but other than that I'm not sure why it's here. That's not a judgement on its merit, I just don't have the background in electronic music to confidently say whether or not it's a good record. It's overlong but I didn't feel mired down by it like I have for other British electronica albums from the 90s. The beats and loops were occasionally mesmerizing and it had some incredible moments, but on the whole, the album fell into the background for me.
Another listener put it as succinctly as I ever could: “Excellent background music, but not much that drives it into the foreground for me.” The sad thing is I like this as much as a lot of the ‘true’ classics that have come my way. Guess I’m just not that deep.
Good, but too long. I do not need 15 minute 'ok' songs in my life. Shame, because i really liked what heard, it just draggsd on and on.
good overall album.
not had time yet but I know orbital'w work
It's fine. If you like this kind of electronica, It's what you'd expect. Bang on 3 stars.
Orbital returns with "Snivilisation", an eclectic album that embarks the listener in a multi-layered sonic journey. Surprisingly engaging, Snivilisation explores the limits of Orbital's musical footprint. Some tracks make good use of warmth synth lines to summon a digital trance. Others appeal to dense loops to wake euphoria. Although elegantly explosive, I cannot discern its legacy clearly. Surely a group of 90s European kids vibed to this, but who took their baton? (I am asking this question from my most honest ignorance since it's quite possible that Orbital cemented the foundations of the IDM genre as we know it.) Final verdict: a good electronic album that could be improved by cutting about 20% of its final length.
Electronic music is really not my thing, but I enjoyed this well enough, for the most part. Kein Trink Wasser was a particular standout. Kind of a krautrocky, Steve Reich vibe.
Trippy
Was hoping for something more trip hoppy
Didn't love it, Didn't hate it
You can tell they were experimenting a bit more on this album compared to their other one on this list. Still found it very enjoyable though, some great beats and sounds throughout, the last two epic songs I thought were especially pretty, the vocals on 'Are We Here?' are gorgeous. You wouldn't think these two songs are nearly 30 minutes combined, they go by without you really noticing. Also loved 'Crash and Carry' in the middle, that one was a real banger. Maybe I preferred the straightforward danceability of the last album, but will be looking into the rest of their work after these 2.
Meh. Didn't really care for this. I didn't hate it by any means just didn't really care for it either.
its ok...wondering why orbital 2 isnt the choice ( as wikipedia says that is their most acclaimed record) Kraftwerk did this 10 times better.
it's so bloopy and blorpy. This is why I wanted to do this project, to hear weird experimental music. Despite enjoying it for it's uniqueness, and I'm glad I listened to it because it was so different, I'm still giving it 3 stars.
Musical. Estaba bien, pero un poco repetitivo. Ambient-techno.
Not my kind of music.
Different album. I suppose if in the right frame of mind it could be great.
It was alright, 3*
Not as good as some of their later stuff loses some steam on the 2nd half of the album but still enjoyable
I guess you had to be there. Reminds me of when I really wanted to get into this kind of music because I thought it was cool but raves make me anxious and I don’t like drugs so…no? Trance music is whatever. Too long for an album. Good length for a set or a show, bad length for a piece of standalone art. But interesting and clearly good and thoughtfully made, just not really my thing I guess.
honestly the start and end are pretty good, a few annoying tracks in the middle but not bad for what it is, an ambient techno album. 3-3.5
I wish I was on more acid
Funky beats, soft techno, not bad background music for work but nothing overly special. 3/5
2.5 some songs by Orbital are total bangers and they were in my standard rotation for techno in the 90’s but this album falls short for me. “Hey son, if your mom calls remember to tell her, SATAN!!”
Good background music to listen to while working. Might listen to again in that case but would never really listen to it on it's own. Will I listen to again: 50%
Highly enjoyable. Creative, musically diverse techno album, one of the better ones I've heard. You could drop 15 minutes off this though and it would be a much better album. Fave Songs: Kein Trink Wasser, Science Friction, Forever, Crash and Carry, Attached
I'm sure I used to like this but it doesn't do much for me now, the longer two final tracks are easily the standouts
An okay album that does nothing to add its importance to a list of this nature. 3/5.
Snivilization was a pretty decent listen. 90s techno that wasn't just a computer voice saying the same phrase for 5.5 minutes straight. Lots of interesting tunes. The bears were good. These guys sound like they would have made incredible video game soundtracks if they started making music like 20 years later.
Never thrilled when I see something I have never heard of it and it's an English Electronic Duo. That being said this was fine, I listened to it while doing chores around the house. Totally inoffensive and fine. I probably will not ever listen to it again.
Cool sounds I hadn’t heard before which is always fun, but probs wouldn’t play most of the tracks again
I'm reviewing this after the fact, and don't really remember much about it. Make of that what you will. I think they're an act that is much better live than listening on Spotify while you're proofreading.
Unnecessary since electronic but at least somewhat tolerable
A little too lo-fi for me. Where are the party tracks dagnamit? "Are We Here" is a delight though
I'm torn on how to rate Snivilisation by Orbital. The band and the music were all new to me, and there are a lot of interesting sounds and recordings on this album that could be worth a revisit. I like some electronic music, and there are several tracks that I marked for a replay. There are a couple of tracks (like "Crash and Carry") that have a little too much repetition - the music begins to push me away from enjoying the listening experience. "I Wish I Had Duck Feet" has some spoken word overlaying the music of the track that kept me from liking that track as much. I would listen to more from Orbital, and I might even come back to this whole album again, because I am curious to hear what I missed the first time. Based on my ratings as I went through the album, it's not quite (but just barely) enough to round up to a full 4 stars.
pretty great! for the first half. kinda drags after a while. Kein Trink Wasser wasn’t very good and honestly the album should’ve ended at Philosphy by Numbers. but there was some good stuff after Kein ! great background music for sure. will probably listen again.
This album is okay but it's not really my style of electronic music. I prefer more ambient vibes and this gets pretty repetitive and unrelenting. I liked the first track, then got distracted and came back to the rest of the album and it wasn't doing much for me after that. The one big exception to this is the track 'Kein Trink Wasser', which was my favorite on the album. To me a lot of the tracks just get boring because they don't seem to go anywhere (at least on first listen). Standout Tracks: Forever, Kein Trink Wasser, Quality Seconds, Attached
I would never have found this album on my own, and I doubt I’ll revisit it much if at all, but I am really glad to have heard it. Grim and unnerving, yet light and spacious, with some great beats. Sometimes repetitive, but a worthy listen. Best song: Science Friction
Techno/electronic music isn't one of my favorite genres overall. While I didn't mind the music, nothing really stood out to me as oh man I need to listen to that again. Not bad just not for me.
I've been quite disappointed with the Orbital albums here, I was ready to give this one a two, but those last few tracks really pick up. What was moments of good music to begin with matures into full great tracks. Stick with it.
Not bad at all! Listened to it twice this morning. I especially like the last few longer tracks. They unfold nicely. Favorite track is "Kein Trink Wasser." And the transition from that to "Quality Seconds," is so totally harebrained/bonkers that it absolutely works!
some of the 1-star reviews for this album are obviously unfair. The more I hear these 90's electronic artists– the Aphex Twins, the Orbitals– I realize that some of the genre-bending artists from the early 2010s which I love owe more than a little bit of their adventurous sprit to some of these artists. Some really interesting attempts and sounds here, and it doesn't sound hashed to death or so formulaic as to be uninteresting. And I am always tapping my foot to these. They have the pocket. Overall, not mind-bending, but really explorative and much more original than I had thought it would be. 3/5
I've heard a bit of Orbital, not sure I was familiar with this one. At the risk of coming across as the amateur I am in terms of the history and details of EDM, this is really good background music. Sounds like a shot but isn't meant to be - it has been great (and weirdly-motivating) to work to this morning, I can imagine it being a nice soundtrack to run or workout to if that's your thing. Negative: sometimes it's... a lot to take; like... I can't imagine people actively listening to this without doing something else. e.g. "Sad but True" that main riff is catchy but I don't need it 100 times, boring into my head repeatedly. I know that's also the genre, so.... \shrug/ .... it is what it is. Related: I actually listened to a little of this in the car (e.g. "Crash and Carry" - maybe a poor driving choice) and was annoyed - proving for me that this is ... actively a non-active-listening album. But back home "Science Friction" is back to nice background music. Almost a perfect 3 star album for me - it's just "there" but I actually might reach for this one from time to time when I need the right life soundtrack. 6/10 3 stars
Seen these before and had a brief spell years ago enjoying one of their records. Wasnt this one, but it was better. Do quite like this, decent background music. I’m certain they have better though. It also seems to have affected my ability to write semi-coherent/ structured sentences
Was dreading this as I thought Orbital were strictly chilled, ambient electronic music. It was a lot more upbeat than I expected I quite enjoyed it as a background album but it's too long and unfocused to warrant repeated listens.
Great background music.
a really varied collection of techno songs some are really spacey like in love with a ghost but others sound more like old video game music kain trink Wasser is my fav song
Orbital did improve their sound after this ngl
Snorbital
beep bloop oontz oontz bleep boop. 3 stars.
It sounded like it could have been a soundtrack to a shitty 90’s movie with computer hackers and hoverboards. It was weird and I thought I was gonna hate it but I actually enjoyed it for the most part. 3 stars
3/5. This is kind of a protest album apparently. It’s got some chill and danceable beats with great riffs and melodies. Think a little more oomph would have benefited this one.
I was vibing to the Brown Album a few months ago, but this Orbital offering is proving trickier to get into. It's colder, and more metallic-sounding, but also has some of the out-of-left-field samples I appreciated in the Brown Album ("Are We Here?", "I Wish I Had Duck Feet") HL: "Science Friction", "Kein Trink Wasser", "Forever"
Fine as far as it goes, which is to seem more like programming than music. There are some interesting and tuneful bits, such as (not very cleverly titled) "Science Friction" and "Attached." But really sterile and synthetic sounding and the satire seems to have seeped out in the nearly three decades since release.
fine but monotonous
Interesting electronic music Really cool use of samples gets really strange in places
Highlight: Sad but True 3,5/5
Well, I love electronic music so I didn't mind this, but this isn't an album I'd willingly seek out again. Man, so much good electronic music in the world and this damn book picked the most flat, mundane stuff.
Some good songwriting and interesting noises, but not enough to make me invested
It's ok, I had this on in the background whilst I worked so it's good rhythmical ambiance. Not really 1001 greatest though?
It’s ok. A little too electronic for me
I usually just listen to Halcyon On and On, on loop. But it's not on this album.
Eclectic one. So much styles under one cover. Still confused
Just like their brown album, Orbital releases something techno & IDM-fueled prominently featuring sci-fi and industrial effects, again using spoken samples and ethereal vocal components. Suffers from the same weaknesses as many other 90s electronic genres, most notably its unnecessary repetition and 70-minute runtime. Yes, I'd probably rave to almost all of this, but this doesn't mean none of it is generic or boring (coughcough "Crash and Carry"). Yet there are a couple outstanding tracks, with my favorite being "Are We Here." There are also some really cool acid house techniques like parts of "I Wish I Had Duck Feet" that would have made for a really interesting album if they chose to go further in that direction.
Enjoyable bleeps and bloops
Kraftwerk descendants beep and boop me in a nice way for a nice little while
Suprisingly solid album, some songs where far to long and a bit repetetive but it generally had a soft and mellow sound thats rare in electronica
Some interesting sounds
The type of techno that Strong Bad was making fun of
ok
probably groundbreaking or something. it it didn’t really move me
Interesting listen, got tired of it towards the end, but otherwise interesting sounding electronic music.
It was nice to have on in the background. probably won't listen to it again.
This was pretty good background music. Can't say it really drew me in as I wasn't paying that much attention but as background, it was pretty good. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone though and don't really see a reason to listen to it again.
perfectly fun to listen to, but ultimately not the most fulfilling, memorable, or substantive electronic headmusic LP. Still, nice.
I liked it, some really cool songs here. I like the one that goes "beep boo-boo bop boo-boo bop". 3.5/5
Possibly damnation via vague praise here, but when they ditch the less interesting (but appealing to critics) ambient stuff and cut loose with abandon, this album flies. As a result, the back end of the album like Quality Seconds and Are We Here is much better than the front. Fun, but innesential.
Neat sounding background music.
Surprisingly engrossing. Perfect headphone music for doing boring adult admin work.
3.4 - Ambient techno. I wonder if (when?) some AI bot will soon be able to churn this type of music out spontaneously, assuming that isn't happening already. Standout: "Kein Trink Wasser."
A trip-hop odyssey that at points loses sight of its destination. Alison Goldfrapp sings some lovely guest vocals though.
Snivilisation is the third album by British electronic music duo Orbital. It is a techno album released in 1994, and it peaked at number 4 on the UK Albums Chart. I really liked this album and appreciated listening to the early music of the modern day EDM scene. This techno still holds up to this day as being funky and danceable.
Snivilised.
beep beep bop. in a certain mood I might be able to listen to this whole album and enjoy it, but not today
cool
"Snivilisation" is the third studio album from the British electronic duo Orbital which consisted of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll. Other descriptors of the music are techno, ambient techno and IDM (intelligent dance music). For this style of music, I thought the songs were original with different dance beats, samples from movies and songs and a musical variety between and within songs. Also relevant is the fact that this album was released at the time of the Criminal Justice Act which gave the British police more power to break-up unlicensed raves. And there is a song on that. The album kicks off with "Forever" and voice samples and ambient music. It gets more upbeat but is still pretty chill. Complex keyboards and melody. "Sad But True" features Alison Goldfrapp on vocals. This has more of a dance groove and is hypnotic in a creepy sort of way. Weird keyboards and noises. No, not a Metallica cover. "Philosophy by Numbers" samples a chemistry experiment from the 1951movie "The Man in the White Suit" and it sounds pretty cool like bubbles and dogs barking. Worth listening to the song solely for that. "Are We Here" is the second song featuring Allison Goldfrapp and here her vocals and backing vocals are used extremely well. The drum beat is rapid at time and sometimes sounds like a drum line. A sample of the Specials' "Man at C&A." Four minutes of silence in the song to protest of the Criminal Justice Act. There is a lot to listen to at 75 minutes long but the duo does a good job mixing things up to keep it interesting. One of the better albums I've heard in the electronic music genre and I can see its inclusion in the 1,001.
Very enjoyable
Nice album. I never loved orbital but was good remembering
Generally felt like mediocre Radiohead. Songs were too long (some 15 min) to keep my interest
beep boop boop bop beep Reminds me of the song in spongebob where they think mr krabs is a robot
It was okay, but nothing special for me
Good trance-y techno. Quality music for working or driving, but I'm not sure this would suffice too long for active listening. Still, for what it is, it's great.
As far as techno goes, this was pleasant background music which makes it better than the vast majority of techno to me. However it was never any better than pleasant background music and the album was definitely too long. Consider the rating a generously rounded up 2.5
Parts of this were enjoyable. I was out digging a trench while listening and it felt like the last song went on for a while. I just checked and it was 12 minutes! 3.5 rounded down
Generic 90s techno/dance album, some tracks are OK, some not. Nothing that stands out for me. 2.5/5
Welp, that was weird!
This one still sticks out of the Orbital catalogue as their most experimental, as the dancefloor is cleared for more dystopian underscoring. Some great riffing on Kraftwerk's Radioactivity is in there, plus the speech samples of preachers keep up the oppressive culty feel. Easy to admire but for me hard to warm to. Hoping to encounter In Sides again on the 1001 journey.
Not to be confused with O.R.B., or The Orb, Orbital was one of those elusive bands for me in the 90's. I disassociated myself from much of the glowstick, pacifier music of this era, so I was eager to find out what I was missing. Firstly, I wish I had duck feet, it's sad but true, that way I wouldn't have to crash and carry science friction philosophy by numbers. Some people think Kein Trink Wasser was quality seconds, but I keep asking myself are we here? By the way the PDF is attached. Turns out I was missing a lot of nonsense that was fun to explore consider the meanings but quickly deduce there's really no meaning only mind altering hallucinogens, pigtails, shelltoes and nights that seem to go on forever. Sometimes its nice to step back in time and go for a ride.
I’m the opposite of hellyeah on this one. Most of “Snivilisation” is pretty boring techno, better as background than dance music. It probably was influential in its time, but now there are hundreds of lo-fi YouTube channels that are not far off from this. It’s “Are We Here?” that I liked best, so don’t listen to hellyeah. The drum and bass finally got me moving, and it consistently built to great breaks throughout its 15 minutes. +1 to a 2-star album.
Are We Here? is a dud…a 15:33 long dud…about 1/6 of the album. Not good. Other than that this album is great techno. 15-20 years ago I would have been way into this. Today, I don’t care so much for techno, but I respect how this stands out in that space. A quality listen.
I love strong, bold roasted, black coffee, in all of its various applications: in a pint of stout, for example, or a crust application on a steak, or most definitely in the Italian dessert, Tiramisu, with its foundation of coffee-soaked ladyfingers upon which to build the layers of sweetened mascarpone cheese and cocoa. Think of each of the songs on 'Snivilisation' as laying a foundation- sometimes beginning with synthesized percussion, other times with, say, the alternating use of two synth bass parts to set the beat before the electronic percussion jumps in (‘Science Friction’); once, even, on ‘Kein Trink Wasser,’ a full three minutes of simple piano chords rapidly played- upon which layers and textures are then laid, musically constructed. There’s an awful lot of creative playfulness that went into this recording. The opening song, ‘Forever,’ was led by a spritely cymbal tapping beat to which lush synthesized string chords were added, eventually settling into a nice groove, until a surprisingly catchy bridge just slithered into the song like a snake and lingered for a while, longer than most bridges, almost like a wholly other song. ‘I Wish I Had Duck Feet,’ is as good an example as any of Orbital’s flawless skill in syncopation, with a kind of a latino flavored bit of electronica. Imagine Kraftwerk covering Santana. Keys that seem to be letting off sparks are played over a crazy chord progression on ‘Philosophy by Numbers.’ A clever synthesized xylophone arrangement is featured on ‘Science Friction.’ And Allison Goldfrapp’s periodic non lyrical vocals were a welcome intrusion, all caramel sweet and rich, with just a hint of B’jork. I’m not sure if ‘Quality Seconds’ and it’s techno-meets-thrash metal fits on this particular LP, but at a minute and a half it was quickly forgotten during the next fifteen plus of ‘Are We Here?’ I really like the Ambient genre of music, and while I favor the more a piacere compositions, I’m also finding that I enjoy some of the techno-ambient stuff out there, like this LP. Scratching my head over the title, though. It’s not spelled ‘snivel,’ so we’re not talking crying eyes and runny noses. The only information I could find was that the numerical value of Sinvil (whatever that is?) in Pythagorean Numerology is 4. And the letters ‘D,’ ‘M’ and ‘V’ all carry that same value. Some subtle reference to (and perhaps ranking of?) the cultural anthropology of the Department of Motor Vehicles? (Look at the cover art before entirely dismissing this ridiculous theory.)
A fora je. Neke pjesme bi jako pasale u simsima. "I wish I had duck feet" hehe
This falls under a group of music that I call club music without the club. While it works as a standalone listen (I do like Allison Goldfrapp's vocals), it loses power outside the club. The combination of politics and electronic music can be powerful, but some songs seem to go on a bit too long. That may work in the club, but the focus on drum and bass at the expense of melody is problematic to me.
Ill be honest and say I did not finish this one but I do not expect that I missed much. It was fine electronic music but it’s not for me. While I don’t need vocals I do like a melody and that was missing here.
Neat if a little inaccessible
Ok electronica album, probably won’t listen again
Not really my thing but I enjoyed it more than expected, especially the second half
Very consistent without hitting the high points of the 'brown' album.
Enjoyed it. Nothing ground-breaking though.
In terms of electronic music I find techno to be one of the least interesting for me, at least this era of techno. I know Orbital is considered quintessential techno and I get it, but feels so dated now in comparison to modern IDM. Listening to it in a big warehouse at a rave, now that I could get into. As a casual listening experience it's meh.
So when I saw this album come up as my listen for today, my initial reaction was "oh no, not another electro-dance album". From what I've gleaned from the previous albums I've heard (been assigned?), these albums tend to be pretty samey and way too long. Well this one is better than most I've heard of the genre. It's still much too long. I got through the 6th song and was thinking this is pretty good, actually, then I see that of 3 of the 4 remaining songs, the shortest is 9:26, with one of them clocking in at over 15 minutes. Well the last part of the album was as good as the early part. In general terms; interesting beats, not too monotonous and overall an enjoyable listen. 3.5 🌟 (extra points because Tidal chose as the next random song after the last had played something called "Water From A Vine Leaf" by someone called William Or it, which was quite excellent).
Nomas para saber
Felt like some middle of the road trance to me.
I probably would have liked it back in the day. But it sounds dated, now. I like some tracks. Some are actually annoying. Like "Quality Seconds". I like "Kein Trink Wasser".
At times great to work to, then it’d start talking to me.
Beep beep sheep
First time listening. Had it on in the background, it was alright. Couldn't tell you much about the individual tracks though.
Not really into techno these days, never heard of this Dj or album before, quiet enjoyable would listen to again.
Very Aphex Twin like... Repetitive, but not annoyingly so. Actually made some really nice background music for working. A couple of duds, but overall not too bad for being a relatively unplayed album.
Not really my style, had trouble getting into it.
5/10
It's really good, and a step up from the previous album, but this is the second orbital album on the list, it's not different enough for me to get too excited about.
Would be a 2.5 if possible
Interesting album. Mostly long and meandering, but the last song is really something. Damn though it takes its time getting there. 3.5 🌟
Really interesting eclectic sound
Electrónica, con un toque de psicodelia
Techno 101, very inoffensive but hardly genre defining
This upbeat electronic music wasn't bad. I wasn't over the moon about the album, but I found myself bouncing to the beat through much of it.
A solid groove of an album. Songs weren't all that distinct from one another but I danced pretty much the whole time. The last track felt like the end of a long dance party and I felt good and ready to go home.
This grew on me. Might listen to it again if I need to be hyped up during a boring work task.
Orbital has been a major influencer in the British Electronica movement and genre, and this album shows a much more atmospheric approach to the genre. Intermixed with vocals and what sounds like taped conversations, the album flows into a delightful background of cacophony and noise. Unlike other groups of their era, this one feels content to dip toes into the industrial sounds without going completely in, but also stays away from any major attempt at singles.
Nice for the background, but not much more.
It started strong, but the weird speech insertions and repetition kind of wore me down after a while.
I've listened to Orbital before but not this album. I know them from the Mortal Kombat soundtrack. It's fine for background music. Not something I'd listen to regularly.
groovy trippy vibes if you want to have a weird trip use this
I'm having a very hard time rating this. It isn't bad, it just all blends together. For this type of music, I don't think I'm equipped to judge.
Bit too experimental for me
instrumental trance. good stuff.
Very mid-90s, some cool synth sounds!
Good work focus music, but not for anything else
beep boop
solid early techo album. Didn't blow me away and was less clubby than I was expecting.
I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Some of the songs actually annoyed me, but I feel hesitant to blame the music, maybe I was in a bad mood. I lieu of giving it another listen, I'll just give three stars instead.
Chemical brothers vibe
yeah it was alright was into 3.5
Last couple of tracks drag a bit long, but overall good electronic groove.
for a purely instrumental album it was really cool
The first couple songs were hard to get into. It defitely picks up though and helped motivate me to clean my kitchen. I listened to a lot of this type of music in the mid-late 90s - so it's enjoyable. Bits and pieces sound too much of the 90s, a bit stale. But overall I liked this.
Not the biggest fan of this genre but it was enjoyable.
Good background music if I'm at work. If I'm trying to read something, then no.
Nice Techno Album
Wow another thing in a row that isn't for me. It's far too repetitive, I can imagine enjoying this more in a live setting but as an album it doesn't work for me. Kein Trink Wasser in particular is insanely repetitive, and Attached started fairly well but it just kept doing the same thing ov r and over and over, it felt like it would never end. The whole thing just ends up blending into the background and I forgot I'm listening to it The only thing I would really say I liked was Sad But True, I liked that drum loop Highlights: Sad But True
I respect eletronic music but this one is very monotonous so its not for me.
Fine in the setting of listening while going to work and doing your morning routine. Other than that not a fan
I found this to be largely uninteresting and sometimes borderline irritating. It sounded like people who were really into 'My Life In The Bush of Ghosts', 'Selected Ambient Works' and taking 90s club drugs. There was a 15 minute track somewhere in the end there that I found myself to be able to successfully have it on as a background song. It is somewhere between a 2 and a 3.
Yep. It’s an album on this list. Not memorable nor catchy. It just is.
Type shit they play in a student film
Electronic album that gets repetitive and goes a little too long. It wasn’t the worst electronic album on this list, so that’s something. 2/5 Won’t listen again
wasn't absolutely horrible but i couldn't make it all the way to the end either
I'll give you credit for being influential but that's about it
sure i guess man
1,5
Eh? I mean, sure?
Wow, don’t think I’d ever listen to this again but it’s not offensively terrible so let’s say 2
90s rave culture - pass my baggy jeans and glow sticks - or don't! It's not for me thanks, I was busy not being a knobhead. I am giving it a listen, but it's not helping.
Not in the mood
I had always wondered what would happen if you put a backbeat to a mid1980s IBM server room. Now I know. I didn’t get this album. It felt like a transition album between the 1970s techno origination (eg, Kraftwork) and late 1990s dance/trance (Crash & Carry felt like an Underworld Demo). Overall, I don’t feel like the album contributed anything to the genre I hadn’t already heard twenty years prior.
This the type of electronica where I feel like nothing is happening. When I listen to it it feels like it’s never ending, and when I have listened through it I hardly remember what I’ve been listening to. There were some parts that were okay, but never really good.
Nothing special just some noise.
Beep boop synthesizer
4/10
I found this album less interesting than the previous Orbital album I listened to. Nothing stood out and I thought it was kind of a slog to be honest.
