Is this band's name offensive in Norwegian?

1998. Fourth album. Last release before the band disbanded (they reunited in 2002). Album saw the band move towards a more glam rock-oriented sound mixed with punk and proved to be a breakthrough record for the underground band. The snake on the cover art is taken from the American militant far-left organization Symbionese Liberation Army's banner/flag. Intentional Provocation and "Anti-Political Correctness" (both left side and right side).

Dumb fun

Very energetic, very silly, very fun to listen to. I'm enjoying this one a lot though I require the lore on why the band is named like this.

How is this included as a must-listen. It is entirely derivative musically and the lyrics are banal and silly. What is this for? I listened to the whole thing hoping that the Bowie cover might even make it worth it. But that great Bowie song was bland and unspecial.

Loud, fun, straightforward rock'n roll/glam rock. Like a tasty cheap margarita -- tasty and fun while going down, but leaves you feeling empty with a bit of a headache afterwards. 2 stars, bumped up to 3 for the clever song names.

This reminded me a lot of My Chemical Romance. Production is clean but the songwriting is a little underdeveloped. I thought vocals were good and instrumental performance was excellent. Great guitar sound.

Navel gazing bandwagon jumping nonsense. No need for it

First two songs are alright and solid punk tracks, specially "Selfdestructo Bust", which has a very frenetic rhythm and it is very fun, creating the expectation of this record being a rather energetic experience. But from here, the album gets progressively more derivative and formulaic, to the point where, every time I'm reaching the end, I just want it to end. Kind of a shame that I feel negative about this, since there are some really good hooks, very playful instruments, powerful riffs, and energy pumping rhythms. Thinking about it, not only the album gets monotone, but also the voice is kind of mediocre, most of the guitars solos don't add anything and are there because their formula for writing music force them to add them (or the guitarist is incredibly egotistical, which usually happens) and some lyrics are very childish in a non funny way (shouldn't be necessary to point out what I'm talking about. The titles of some songs already are self explanatory). In the end, very forgettable glam punk.

Fun, stupid music played tight and loud. Enjoyable and empty. There's always a place for this kind of punk/metal hybrid, puerile lyrics and all.

Completely new to me and had fun with it. Wtf are these guys saying? Rock against ass? Rendezvous with Anus? Some songs maybe better not to listen to the lyrics (looking at you, Prince of the Rodeo). I like the punky ramones influence with the more sharp and skillful instrumentation of metal. Pretty goofy but pretty enjoyable too, lots of groove to it

Silly, but fun and rocking. 3.5 stars

Turbonegro kind of seems to blur the line between homage and parody. I often can't tell if they really like the music they're playing or making fun of it. Their style is sort of a punky hard rock, which on the surface is kind of cool, but the lyrics are super dumb. Even though it's a different genre, they sort of remind me of the Darkness where they seem to have a fondness for the genre they're aping, but also want to make fun of it a bit. There's a few good tunes here -- I liked "The Age of Pamparius", "Humiliation Street" and "Back to Dungaree High" -- but there are some truly terrible songs too. Light 3 stars.

You mean to say I’ve had to listen to two M.I.A albums when I could have checked out these guys sooner and find out about their other album Ass Cobra with the Pet Sounds homage on the cover ? These guys are a hoot! What rock and roll should all be about. Quite a few full pelt solid gold anthems as well. M.I.A needs to go to Dungaree High and start making music like these guys.

Please don’t make me listen to this again. I thought the only good part of this project was the cover but a little digging suggests the album artwork borrowed the serpent from the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) flag/banner, alongside the phrase “Death to the fascist insect that preys upon the life of the people!”

They make a good noise but I made the mistake of having the lyrics showing on Spotify…

Not a band or album I expected to see on here but was excited to discover it is. Learned about these guys back in high school during the Viva La Bam/MTV era of those shows.

If I’d heard this music st a teenage house party, I’d think it was fine. But I’m not sure what it’s doing on a list of 1001 albums I need to hear. Sounds a bit like The Hives, but with more slick production. And the slick production makes the mock-punk, wannabe bad boy lyrics sound especially silly.

As many my age who were very into Jackass/Viva La Bam and the various other related productions, I have listened to a little bit of Turbonegro. So I kind of know what to expect. "Age of Pamparius" is an excellent song IMO. Euro punk rock with a lot of offbeat humor. The humor doesn't all hit for me anymore, I think, but it's got a solid rock foundation and lots of good energy. Gets pretty samey as you go too. Still not a bad listen though.

Turbonegro’s Apocalypse Dudes is an exhausting mess that mistakes obnoxiousness for personality. The songs feel repetitive, the shock value wears thin almost immediately, and the whole thing comes across as forced rather than genuinely dangerous or funny. It may have its cult following, but for me, this was a miserable listen from start to finish.

Ok, this is pretty clear cut - dead average rock album with no innovation and infantile lyrics. Norway actually contributed some interesting things in music and yet the authors of the list choose something which just sounds American, very disappointing indeed. This is between 2 and 3 stars, with 2.5 on RYM

So what I’ve learned is that glam rock made in the 1990s is just reheated hair metal. There might be some pop punk spit-and-shine on it. The band itself sounds fine, but the songwriting is pretty juvenile and the production is nothing new or exciting. It’s splashy and catchy enough, and certainly isn’t lacking for energy, but it definitely made my inner pretentious critic start grinding its teeth. I think it’s supposed to be fun; I was not having fun. Spiritual predecessor to whatever Greta Van Fleet is doing.

This album was better than expected. I feel like some of the songs would’ve fit right in on the Repo Man soundtrack. Good times. I liked it.

Sounds like it was written by the School of Rock, which was impressive coming from 10-year-olds, but a little less so from adults

This is a really cool mix of hard genres that comes out sounding the most like hardcore punk. I also think it's cool that they're Norwegian. It just provides a cool perspective that awesome heavy music is everywhere. These guys rock and have a very cool style and sound. Great stuff.

It's like they raided the punk closet, stole all the patch-laden jean jackets, and threw a wild party in their basement. The tunes are catchy as hell, and even if they're singing about butts, at least they're having fun. Join the apocalypse, dudes. I listened to the whole album, but I could’ve just listened to the first song because they are all the same… literally same tempo, same guitar riffs, same vocal delivery, same dumb lyrics. I get the appeal. If I was 14 and huffing paint behind a Circle K with my dirtbag friends, minutes away from going to jail… this would be the soundtrack, but I’m not any of those things and this kind of sucks. These guys wrote one song and played it 13 times with different names. Speaking of names… it sucks too. These guys are from Norway. I don’t really have a point, just thought that was interesting. I considered this being my first 1 rating, but since I could think of a fantasy scenario where I would maybe like this, I’ll save it for something worse. Anything worse than this will surely deserve it.

I did not expect to like this, but I had an absolute blast. Having this on while working was perfect. Fast, high energy, varied enough to stay interesting while not demanding too much.

Dumb as hell

Everything about this album feels random. The goofy title, the mix of punk and glam rock, the fact that it's from Norway, the use of Data 70 font and the six-headed cobra on the album cover. But most of all it's inclusion on this list. Yet it's kind of an inspired choice and I'm actually glad it's here. Godspeed Turbonegro. Favorite track: Get It On 3.5/5

That cover of Suffragette City and the overall stupidity made me want to give this a 1 but it doesn't sound like hot garbage so I'll give it a 2 (begrudgingly).

Mixing the best parts of glam with punk energy, I was floored by how up my street this was. Songs with titles of "Don't Say Motherfucker, Motherfucker" and "Rendezvous With Anus" show how seriously these guys take things. Just because they might be on the goofy side lyrically, don't think that these guys are just a joke. They certainly know how to pen a rock anthem that can get your heart racing. The loud guitar gave me serious Stooges vibes and the anthemic quality of the songs reminded me of Ramones. Stupid in the best possible way, this is the most Dudes Rock album I've heard on this list so far. I will definitely be coming back to this and I will be blasting it loud, as it should be played.

Loud and not particularly interesting.

I’m rating this with the same spirit as for Chocolate Starfish, because this is a goddamn delight. I’ve never listened to Turbonegro before now- all I knew was they were a metal band from Norway. I expected a very different sound. I was bewildered and disappointed. Then I was won over. Solid musicianship, ridiculous lyrics (in the same nonsensical vein as early Max Martin tracks) and an unapologetic goofiness that just works. This album isn’t going into my regular listening rotation anytime soon but I’d happily catch a live show

Never heard of these guys but this is pretty rocking. I get some Stooges vibes at times--tons of energy.

Did these guys have a metronome that wouldn't go below 180 bpm? It's kinda fun fast guitar stuff for the whole album. The lyrics are generally indecipherable. Overall fun listen but don't think I'll be coming back to it.

This took me Back To Dungaree High.

Yet another example of an album that had potential, but was executed so badly. Glam punk is a really interesting genre fusion, and when done correctly it can be amazing and super unique. But this is just so annoying, it doesn't even come close to the potential it had. It's like they took every glam rock cliche they could think of and then just punkified it.

Probably better and more interesting musically than lyrically. This band is trying too hard to be punk and the profanities and puerile subject matter on some songs bring this album down.

Very Datsuns-y, very cool 🤟

At first I saw the name of the band and went “hmmmm”. Then I saw the names of some of the tracks and went “riiiiiiiight”. Then I listened to it, and realised it’s just pretty ok hair/glam rock/metal. Not great, not terrible, very mid.

​If you have any appreciation for razor-sharp guitar work, over-the-top theatricality, and massive, infectious hooks, Apocalypse Dudes is essentially flawless. Universally praised by critics as a high-water mark for garage-punk and glam-punk crossover, frequently landing on best-of-all-time lists for underground rock.

I enjoyed this group. Good song lyrics with humor. Great guitar sound. They have lots of energy.

2.5/5. Some basic ass Glam-Metal/Hard Rock. An album that the 5/10 score was made for. There’s some decent riffs here and there but everything else is so basic and by-the-numbers musically speaking. Lyrically, the album is mostly pretty bad, like a thirteen year olds idea of “badass” and the vocals are fine but not noteworthy. The albums whole vibe can really be summarized by its closer “Good Head” which is a song about how people just wanna get some good head.

This isn't horrible, but there also isn't really anything I like about it.

Honestly did not enjoy this very much.. felt like either watered down glam rock, or watered down punk, sitting somewhere in this awkward space in between. I would have preferred if they sang in their native language as well, not to say the singing was bad or they spoke english poorly, but I thought it would have made it a bit more authentic and unique. However, their vocabularity seems somewhat limited so we get songs about getting good head. I guess its silly and whatever, but the music itself just seems like a jumping off point for other bands to do it better. Which to my understanding this album is on the list due to the context in which it was released in. Just seems like they aimed at too many targets and didn't lean into anything. I listened to another album today though which I would have given 5 stars. Its not on the list though unfortunately... Its the Cymande self titled album, banger album that is one that I'd listen to 100 times over before listening to this one again.

Vorher nie mit denen beschäftigt, hat aber richtig Spaß gemacht. Hier haben sich The Hives auch bestimmt einiges abgeschaut. Manchmal hätte ich mir gewünscht, dass die Songs noch etwas länger sind. Der Opener hat das eigentlich ganz schön vorgemacht, wie sehr das Ausufernde bei denen funktioniert. Kurz und knackig funktioniert es natürlich auch, wobei sich das Konzept dann doch im Laufe der Platte etwas abnutzt, sodass ich auch hier auf 4 Sterne gehen muss. Aber schon verrückt, dass man den Hives gar nicht entkommen konnte, während ich diese Band so lange erfolgreich gemieden habe.

Geht gut nach vorne. Nicht zu abwechslungsreich, was mich sonst eher stört. Passt hier irgendwie sehr gut in den Gesamtstil rein. Turbonegro scheinbar doch ganz geil.

Das hat mich musikalisch zwischendurch immer mal abgeholt aber der Anfang hat mir irgendwie mehr versprochen. Bei den Texten hört man am besten weg und allein der Name verdient einen Punkt Abzug. Der Wikipedia Artikel hat mir dann das Gefühl gegeben, dass man hier provozieren will mit stumpfesten Mitteln und auch im gehobeneren Alter nicht davon abrückt. Darüber könnte man hinwegsehen wenn ich nicht eh schon bei ner 2/5 wäre.

I love this. Nordrock meets hair metal. The intellectual lyrics ("Get it on, get it on, get it on..."), the glampunk ethic, the SLA-style logo, geez who could ask for more? Makes the Ramones look pretentious and overcomplicated.

Back in 1999 or 2000, I saw a Swedish band called Backyard Babies play SXSW, and I just loved everything about them. Glammy, punk, guitar rock with a sneer and a funny enough take on English to make it that much more expressive. Same review for these guys. I went into this in a pretty shitty mood and was laughing by the time the second tune came on. Lifted my mood. Fuckin' A.

I warmed up to this one as the record played on. It's pretty fun. Got some good ol' Ramones energy with that late-90s production and vibe. Not sure the lyrics were all that amazing and the backup singer always sounded out of place, which was sometimes charming and sometimes just weird. Glad I hear it.

Very glam, very fun, very silly.

This was a pleasant surprise. It doesn't sound like a 1998 album at all—it's much closer to *Appetite for Destruction*-era Guns N' Roses with punk attitude. The standout is the guitar work, with melodic lead lines constantly weaving over the rhythm guitar in a way that reminded me of Slash. The bass also gets to shine, adding melodic grooves that brought Duff McKagan to mind. **"Get It On"** is an absolute banger and easily my favorite track. My biggest issue is that 53 minutes and 15 songs is simply too much of the same thing. By the halfway point I was ready for a change of pace, and trimming it to 12 songs would've made for a much stronger album. Still, it's a fun, riff-heavy record that grooves from start to finish and is easy to throw on without demanding your full attention.

I don't know whether I'm dumber or smarter for having listened to this. Apocalypse Dudes is a great title for an album and Rock Against Ass is an even better song title. The shredding was on point. But in the end pretty stupid. Pretty gloriously stupid, but I'm going to need a better front man for it to go over 3 stars.

Probably won't come back to this, but I would 100% tag along if someone invited me to go see them live, especially if the year is 1998. Not convinced it belongs in the 1,001 of all time, but a good listen.

I kind of got into Turbonegro in the early '00s, when they reformed and reissued their albums, but I've scarcely returned to them since. Apocalypse Dudes is all about the riffs and attitude, and it has both in spades. While it's kinda one-note, it's fun regardless.

Were these the guys that Bam Margera was really into back in the day? Their Wikipedia page doesn't mention it, but I think that his show was the first place I heard of this band. (Google later revealed that yes, this band was on his show.) At any rate, eh, this is OK. The lyrics are kind of funny though juvenile, music is decent. I was expecting it to be a little harder than it is. The music and vocals remind me a little bit of the Donnas. The more I listen, the more they sound like a male version of the Donnas to me. The end of "Humiliation Street" is probably cool live, but it goes on way too long on the album IMO. I enjoyed this more than I expected to, but it's still not something I would ever put on for pleasure. This is higher than a 2 for me but lower than a 3.

Misturinha de Punk com Glam, não é uma má ideia. E tudo indica que o álbum realmente abraça o absurdo. Querendo ou não, a produção do Glam com o estilo de paredes de guitarras misturado com o estilo composicional do Punk, com ritmos acelerados e frenéticos, casa-se maravilhosamente bem. É uma combinação que parece tão óbvia, e simultaneamente, tão errada. Ramone e Bowie juntos! E ajuda demais que os aspectos técnicos são todos sólidos aqui. Não esperava vocais tão satisfatórios quanto esses, nem mesmo solos de guitarra tão eletrizantes. Percussão fechada, tudo muito impressionante, em alguns momentos eu estava quase babando. Estou muito surpreso, palavras me escapam. Esperava um disco estúpido e irritante, e fui totalmente calado. Quer dizer, o disco realmente é um pouco estúpido, mas num bom sentido! Do tipo que te faz esquecer tudo, estourar seus tímpanos e destruir suas caixas de som, e curtir o som. Me sinto um velho digitando isso, mas tudo bem. Álbum ótimo. 5/5

I’m familiar with the majority of stuff on this list, so when something comes along that I haven’t heard of, and the first few songs are interesting, I get excited. I’m not a fan of some of the punkier songs on this, but a lot of it was enjoyable and the whole album will be worth a couple more listens at least. 3.5/5, rounding up

I fully expected to hate an album by "Turbonegro" featuring songs like "Rendezvous with Anus" but what can I say, it rocks! This sounds like a mix of early 70s glam/punk but with lyrics that tapped into the unashamed crassness of the 90s (I'm thinking South Park / Beavis and Butthead type cultural examples) It's fun and hard not to enjoy, I have to admit

Det her album er et kærlighedsbrev til teenageren som stadig bor i mig. Et homo erotisk vers, men med den Euroboy riffs. Det er så få albums som jeg har dyrket lige så meget som Apokalypse Dudes. Elsker alt ved det.

Punkens svar på Guns ‘n’ Roses. Det har klart noget kvalitet. Men det er også så way over the top at min 46årige hjerne ikke helt kan tage det ind. Havde jeg været 12-13 år var det sikkert strøget direkte ind.

Es ist Turbonegro auf maximalem Glam‑Punk‑Krawall: grell, dreckig, überdreht und voller ironischer Stadion‑Attitüde. Einige Songs zünden sofort, andere wirken eher wie stilisierte Pose. Rotzig, kultig, aber nicht durchgehend stark.

It's fun, it's silly, it's enjoyable background music. Lyrics are nonsensical whenever I actually tune into what they're saying but that's part of the charm. 3.5/5 in my heart, 3 based on the rating system.

Super fun. Turbonegro is sort of like the Ramones if the Ramones were more into standard hard rock riffing. There isn’t a ton of high brained lyricism, but who cares? It’s goofy and fun. It does get pretty one-note, but for party rock, it’s kind of great. 8/10

It’s been done better …

My eyes were getting ready to roll as I heard the “woah-oah-oahhhs” of the opening song, but Turbonegro quickly won me over with their ridiculously amped up power chords and a surprisingly nerdy vocal performance which charmed me. It’s not in any way cool, but there is a genuine sense of fun throughout which never fades. They have enough energy to go for days and totally commit to the bit.

Turbonegro also get a low 3 from me, plenty of ideas and riffs here, some fun and some silliness that doesn’t appeal but overall a good time

Scandinavian dudes! Essa é uma das bandas que mais influenciaram duas paixões minhas: The Cruel Intentions e Hardcore Superstar. So por esse motivo esses caras tem meu respeito e admiração. Uma mistura de punk com rock and roll, riffs melódicos, gritos duplicados, e uma pitada de humor vindo das terras do Black Metal. Apocalypse Dudes é um disco que eu já conhecia e com certeza é o mais icônico da banda, um trabalho que envelheceu muito bem e nem parece ser de 1998. A Noruega é um país que é sempre lembrado de forma bem polêmica pela segunda onda do Black Metal, mas se tratando de música vai muito além do subgênero. Muitas bandas filhas do estilo Turbonegro fazem grande sucesso até mesmo sem furar a bolha local, assim como as que citei que segue a linha do Sleaze/Glam e que rodam o mundo tocando em grandes festivais. O próprio Turbonegro ainda segue em atividade mantendo sua história viva, mesmo com poucos trabalhos lançados. É uma banda que vale muito a pena conhecer e este disco é com certeza a porta de entrada.

From the very first song. I thought this sounded like the bastard child of Boston and the Ramones. And I like both of those bands (or at least some of their stuff) - but this not so much. Then it morphed into Ramones + Jet and then just Jet. And it all has pretty stupid lyrics. I'm sorry, I did not need to hear this generic band before I died. I'm not gonna listen to any of this again. It's not necessarily bad, it's just not necessary to have existed. It all just feels like a bad copy of other stuff that is good. Heuuu... ok ? Bon ben j'ai trouvé ça assez nul. C'est plutôt énergique et très pro, ce qui n'est pas si mal, mais musicalement, j'ai trouvé ça d'un creux assez abyssal. J'ai vraiment eu l'impression que le groupe essayait d'avoir l'air le plus subversif possible, tout en n'étant pas du tout à la hauteur de ses propres ambitions. Je sais pas si j'ai le cerveau atrophié à force d'écouter Cannibal Corpse, mais pour moi, il y a un décalage énorme entre l'image que veut se donner le groupe (la pochette, les titres des morceaux, etc.) et ce qu'il fait vraiment. Parce que musicalement, c'est concrètement une espèce de pop rock qui fait semblant d'être énervé en mettant des grosses guitares, mais qui fait aussi bien attention à rester tout lisse. T'as quand même un titre qui s'appelle "Are You Ready (For Some Darkness)" et c'est le truc le moins glauque que tu aies entendu de ta vie. Et ça résume assez bien l'album. PS : en plus j'en lis sur le groupe, moins ça va. Comment ça, ils faisaient des blackface à leurs débuts ? Comment ça, ils sont contre "le politiquement correct" ? Je vais pas pousser mes recherches plus que ça, parce que la flemme, mais ça sent le groupe qui vire à droite avec le temps parce qu'au fond, pour eux, être subversif, c'est être insultant avec tout le monde, surtout les communautés marginalisées. PS 2 : ah et en plus, apparemment, leur style musical, c'est du "glam punk". Bon, à un moment, il faut arrêter de vouloir qualifier de punk tout ce qui a un vague rapport avec le style original, hein.

This just wasn’t for me at all

Had way more fun than I expected.

It seems like not enough people can appreciate some killer Punk music when they hear it, and that is okay. I am not hailing Turbonegro's Apocalypse Dudes as a masterpiece by any means, but there are some really solid songs here that I wish weren't surrounded by such mediocre ones. It isn't like the 90s were a generally good year for Punk music as a whole, let alone 1999, as the genre was probably at its' most dead it had been in some time along with the 2000s. Much like cockroaches, Punk has never seemed to fully die out as it has always regained a small but passionate fanbase throughout the years that has kept the simple yet effective genre going strong. I feel that is probably why Turbonegro's Apocalypse Dudes is here on the 1001 Albums To Hear Before You Die list as there really isn't anything special here. It is Punk at its' finest and in a much more glamorous fashion than usual thanks to the more over the top sound here. Like I said there are some tracks I like here and some I do not, but there isn't anything really special I can say besides that. It is decent and sometimes that is all there really is to say.

In humorous glam punk, it's crucial to maintain a delicate balance — not making songs that are too bleak, like Royal Republic, but also not descending into obscene clowning, like Steel Panther. And Turbonegro nailed it. Their dense punk sound is reminiscent of a mix of Ramones riffs, Mötley Crüe hooks, and the overall rowdy atmosphere of The Stooges, complete with lyrics that border on the offensive. The band's image is completed by its members, who look like they've stepped out of Tom of Finland's drawings, in defiance of the imagery of their famous black metal fellow countrymen. Listening to this album might make you want to put on a denim jacket and jump on a skateboard. The streaming version of the album includes an extra track — a cover of David Bowie's "Suffragette City." To further cement the band's sound in your mind, I'll add that it sounds right at home on the album.

Album #141, Turbonegro, Apocalypse Dudes ⭐⭐⭐ I’d never heard of this band before. Never even had a passing awareness of them. So this was a completely new discovery for me, albeit in a style of music that I know pretty well. It’s a really good punk album. It’s funny, adolescent and stupid, but in all the right ways. The music is properly heavy too. Reading about it afterwards, I kept seeing genre labels like glam punk and deathpunk, but honestly, I don’t really hear that. This just sounds like good punk music to me. It’s very Stooges-inspired in places, with a bit of Ramones thrown in, just played heavier and louder. Those are all positives, but I don’t think it’s reinventing the wheel, and I don’t think it’s really trying to. Although, having read a little about the band afterwards, they seem to have had a fairly high opinion of what they were doing stylistically. Personally, I just hear a solid punk record. I enjoyed it, but nothing on it really blew me away. Would I throw it on again? Probably. Maybe when I’m drunk! Other than that, I don’t really see myself coming back to it very often. A good, solid three-star album.

Really good rock sound.

I listened to the original release (no bonus tracks). The music is rock/hard rock, and could be from the 1970s or 1980s based on the music. I was impressed with this Norwegian band’s English - they could be American based on their lyrics. Overall just good enough for three stars.

Sure wasn't expecting a band called Turbonegro to be white Norwegians from the 80s. Giving a mild squint to the whole thing. The lyrics are particularly inexplicable, which I, unfortunately, like because it reminds me of Eurovision. Lotta butt talk. Slur count = 1.

Creativity, adventurousness, and rebellion all in one album. Very basic, and entry-level. Nothing too complicated.

This is fine. Loud and fast; might have liked it at the time. YouTube not letting me listen to "Don't Say Motherfucker, Motherfucker" but letting me listen to "Rendezvous with Anus" was pretty funny.

Another band that I missed during my early parenting daze, when my listening rotation consisted of the Teletubbies, Wiggles, and Disney soundtracks. This I enjoy, and spun the album 3 times to confirm. Something about Euro punk & hard rock gets my old engine fired up. Can’t really take this too seriously, but that’s the point. Relax and enjoy the show.

This album is a reminder that this is 1001 Albums you need to hear before you die and not the 1001 best albums ever made. That said, I have no idea what i stumbled into or why it made the list. My guess is that if these guys sung in their native tongue, the lyrics might not sounds so corny. Perhaps this is what they wrote as they learned English by listening to early Motley Crue. Either way, I barely got through one listen. It kind of reminded me of if Tommy Wiseau decided he wanted to make a metal band, and front it. This is what it would sound like. "I did not do it! I did not hit her" would not feel out of place on this record. Some of the riffs do sound cool so I'll give it an extra star just for that.

Well I didn’t expect to see Turbonegro pop up on the list but I’m very happy they did, it’s been years since I’ve listened to this in full. Gotta be honest I fully expected to give this five stars based on my memory of it. Obviously with a 4 I did really enjoy it but it did drag a wee bit in the middle before finishing strong. Top Track - The Age Of Pamparius or Humiliation Street

Enjoyed that the first song was the theme for Wildboyz. Aside from that it was enjoyable but not outstanding.

Musically it's alright, lyrically is quite stupid. Overall it's just an okay album. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

Norwegian punk band with glam rock flavours. it's tight, angry and quite intense. Not sure you'd get away with that name these days lads.

These boys kick more ass than a donkey! I want them at my next party. This is solid non-stop rocking stem to stern. Definitely going on the repeat list. Maybe not essential, but very fun.

This entire album just has the vibe of a random band I would catch at a festival and get drunk while absolutely throwing down to, definitely don't look at the lyrics too closely though Was also not expecting Bowie's Suffragette City as the last song of the album!

Terrible album name, awful lyrics, and almost certainly the worst band name on the entire list... I don't think Nevertheless, solid album, good tunes and I really enjoyed it when I managed to tune out the lyrics. Sounds a lot like something the rival band would be playing in a battle-of-the-bands movie. Or, actually, maybe something like Limozeen.

I was really hoping this would be a stoner rock band, based on the album cover alone. I think it obvious I knew nothing about this particular band going into it. Instead, it's like the Queers found "regular/basic" rock music and made a bunch of butt jokes. Call it 1.5 just for some riffs.

Musically decent but lyrically abject. Humiliation Street was a definite highlight, great guitar work not spoilt by the message.

Some great old rawk tunes here. Liked the pace and musicianship, but there seems to be a major problem with the lyrics. I would love to give them the benefit of the doubt the lyrics work better in Norwegian and is simply a translation or cultural issue. But sadly I like this band, I am not that naive, their grasp of English is probably far superior than most English people and is just a case of poor taste.

Listening to this album made me feel like I was watching a Halo 3 montage on YouTube as a 15 year old. The roaring guitars, heavy drum beats & fast pacing solos are great fun in isolation and pack a punch. Unfortunately for me though it got boring very very quickly. There’s only so many songs like this I can hear in succession before I’m craving something different. The songwriting overall just feels directionless and a bit soulless in the end, which is a shame because after one song I felt promise from this record.

Feels like an industry plant

I don't ordinarily like punk, and this is no exception. The songs in the album are predictable and kind of boring. There are some nice guitar solo moments throughout the album, but the rest is boring at best and annoying at worst.

I am totally charmed by ESL Europeans who want to make coolguy music, whether it’s these Norwegian dudes or any Eastern European dj from the eurodance era. Couple that with the fact that this album doesn’t exist in a universe where musical nuance is a thing and you just have to put down your critical arms and give in to the hilarity. Saying this album is maximal implies that there’s some sense of minimalism these guys are aware of - and I don’t think that’s the case. Even the mastering of this project is so compressed and LOUD. “Rock Against Ass” is surely enjoyable to anyone younger than late millennial age, as they are a group that grew up with enough ESL MC’s to find the “DJ Crazy Times” parody endearing. About halfway through the album at “Zillion Dollar Sadist” you have the hilarious realization that literally every hook, be it vocal or instrumental, is so quantized and based on counting to 4. By far the best (aka the funniest) song is “Are You Ready For Some Darkness”. The broken English and heavy accents are most prevalent and the lyrics are laughable with each new stanza. Not sure if this was meant to be funny when it was included in this list but it’s sooooo funny 3/5

Noorse metalglamrock met een hoop schijtlolligheid. Met in de bezetting lieden met namen als Hank von Hell, Euroboy en Pol Pot Pamparius, dus dan weet je het wel. We hebben al betere muziek gehad in dit genre, die ook niet zo anaal gefixeerd was, en ook nog een decennium eerder was gemaakt. Muzikaal nog wel aardig gedaan, maar dat kinderachtige gedoe gaan we natuurlijk niet belonen.

Ik dacht deze band te kennen van aanstellerig punk-geschreeuw. Schrok mij dat nog niet genoeg af, dan had ik nog de waarschuwingen van de titellijst te verwerken. Want met titels als Rendezvous with Anus, verwacht ik op voorhand niet een album dat iedereen nou perse moet horen. Dat punk-beeld dat ik had, blijkt onterecht. We krijgen power-rock voorgeschoteld. Het aanstellerige valt ergens ook mee. Ok, ze dikken het muzikaal wat aan. En de onderwerpen zijn wat gezocht. Het boek noemt dat homo-erotisch, waarbij niet enkel verwezen wordt naar de titels (zoals het genoemde voorbeeld), maar ook naar de deuntjes. Ik ben geen specialist, maar het begrip erotiek heb ik zelden zover opgerekt gezien. Ik zou het (in elk geval de titels) eerder slechte puberhumor noemen. Het boek informeert mij intussen waarom ik de punkassociatie had. Dat was de 'muzieksfeer' die de band neerzette op voorgaande albums. Ah, vandaar. En het boek vermeldt warempel iets over instrumenten, zang, en het begrijpen van de ware aard van deze muziek. Zonder het nu gelijk eens of oneens te zijn, kudo's voor meneer Tijs voor een tekst mét inhoud en onderbouwing. Dat we dat op pagina 823 toch nog tegen mogen komen. Ik werd geattendeerd op mijn steeds kortere teksten. Meestal te verklaren door de selectie. (Lever je inspiratieloze muziek, ontvang je ook inspiratieloze kritiek). Dus vandaag tijdens het luisteren bovenstaande maar eens uitgetypt. Merk ik toch, dat tijdens het typen en lezen mijn hoofd aardig meedeint met de muziek. Laat ik zelf dan maar niet kinderachtig zijn, met de sterren.

Onderbroekenlol, schijtlollig, kinderachtig. Daar heb ik een hekel aan. Maar niet aan deze muziek. Vanaf de eerste seconde weet je dat dit in een heerlijk tempo voorbijgaat. Het heeft iets weg van jaren 80 glamrock, de Bon Jovi-tijd. Maar ik vind het vooral heel veel skatepunkrock en hardcore-metal hebben. Hierna hebben ze blijkbaar getekend bij Burning Heart records en Epitaph, waar ook veel van de skatepunk en punkrock op uitkwam waar ik naar luisterde. Ze hadden ook heel goed bij Fat Wreck Chords getekend kunnen hebben. Afgezien van Epitaph misschien, allemaal platenmaatschappijen waar de gemiddelde muziekliefhebber nog nooit van heeft gehoord, maar in de punkrockscene kwamen bijna alle goede platen uit die hoek. Turbonegro is daar met zijn glammetal-invloeden misschien een vreemde eend geweest, maar het past er ook wel weer heel goed tussen. Ik hoor er ook Queens of the Stone Age in terug. Of misschien eerder andersom, want Back to Dungaree High is gecoverd door qotsa en was het enige nummer dat ik vooraf kende. Anyway, dit was onverwacht ruim drie kwartier volop genieten. Gas geven en die gitaren laten schuren, genieton! 5 schijtlollige sterretjes!

Would I ever play this album out in public? No. Would i ever play it for any of my friends? No. Would I ever be caught dead singing any of these lyrics? No. Are the lyrics my style? Absolutely not. Was this album fun to listen to? Absolutely. While this album is not my usual cup of tea, nor has it enticed to me to explore more of this band's discography, it was a fun listen. There's something about the guitar riffs and the band's catchy, but crude, lyrics that kept my head bopping all the way through. But I totally get why this album has a low rating, lol. Favorite track: Rendezvous with Anus

I don't really know what, or why this is but I found it to be punky, silly and good fun. I can't quite tell if they're being serious or taking the piss with the lyrical obsession with anuses and fucking. It feels like a 3-star serious album or a 4-star ironic one, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt here.

Age of Pamparius a clairement volé l'interlude de guit du début à The Who (Won't get fooled again). Je suis dans les inspections de copyright récemment. Rendezvous with Anus est un excellent nom de toune. Hier c'était Monkey in your soul, aujourd'hui c'est Monkey on your back (sans oublier Monkey Gone to Heaven et Everybody's got something to hide except for me and my monkey, les rockeurs aiment les singes): dans 3 jours ce sera du Bowie alors qu'on a ici une reprise avec Suffragette City. Toute est dans toute. 4 étoiles parce que c'est quand même redondant.

I listened to this like 6 times to try to find something to say, but I've got nothing. Its fine. Its a punk record, but it doesn't have any of the charm or charisma that it takes the genre to carry and album for me. Standout Tracks: Age of Pamparius Rating: ⭐️⭐️✨️

Oh my god hell yeah, another one I did not expect to see on this list. Much like, uh, Night of the Comet, it's a perfect B-movie. Much like a Tom Clancy novel, it's a perfect airport book. Much like AC/DC's output, this is a 5-star 3 star album. Stupid as hell, totally empty, and a lot of fun.

OK it's energetic, punk and so on but you need to be in the mood to listen to this. It's not an album that will put you in the mood to actively want to listen to it. Another day it might have been a 3.5, today it's a 2.5. Grading low.

The band name itself makes me feel quite questionable about this album. As I listen to the album, I find it hard finding anything for me. The glam rock and supposedly humoristic touch of this album is not really for me. Sure 'Randevouz With Anus' is an eye-catching title for a track, but the whole experience just feels a bit too juvenile for me. And as such, the rating will follow. Strong 2.

Another Scandinavian rock album (we had The Hives a few days ago). I actually saw these guys live at a festival not that long ago, and they rocked! This album is quite poppy, and the band name and imagery make them sound a lot more hardcore than they actually are. At times, it's more glam rock than anything else. The album starts off very strongly with "Age of Pamparius" and "Get It On." It's just the right amount of punk and rock. It's not as heavy as I was hoping for at times, though. After the first few tracks, I was expecting a 4-star album, but I think the second half lacked any really strong hits. It also became slightly samey. A strong 3 stars.

Yeah hell nah. Why would anyone listen to this when Green Day also exists.

They got the name of the book wrong. It should really be "101 Albums to Hear Before You Die, 800 that are Very Good but not Essential and 100 Where We Ran Out of Anything Else Worth Listening To, So We Bunged in any Old Tosh". I bet you can't guess which category this one falls into.

This album was terribly disappointing, and way softer than I expected and hoped. This sounds like the music that would be made by a fake metal/rock/punk band in a children's movie. Also, very bold move to use the SLA cobra on the album art, especially in an album that doesn't really seem to make any other political statements at all.

Another band I only know by name. I like the use of natural harmonics on the first track. So far this is boring though. I know this band was talked about a lot, but I don’t get why. I know a lot of cynical hipster people who think they are smarter than everyone else love this. The type of people who love to tease someone when they don’t get the joke. I’m not feeling it. I don’t get the joke. I feel like every song is copying the Ramones or trying to make fun of the Ramones.

This is unspectacular. The guitar riffs and solo are solid, nothing groundbreaking, but good. The lyrics, though, are boring. Swearing for swearing's sake. This is basically what high school garage bands aspire to become. That's not a bad thing, but that isn't reason enough to include it on a list of 1,001 albums to listen to before leaving this mortal plane. Maybe the actual book provides some context as to why this album is here, but without that I have no reason to rate this particularly highly. Okay, but actually the guitar playing is really good. This came out after an age of some really excellent guitar players, so it's not trailblazing or groundbreaking, but it is still very good. Favorite Song(s): Prince of the Rodeo

Rock…against(?) ass! I can’t get on board with that message. The turns of phrase in the titles alone really got me. Like Rendezvous with Anus of course. But there’s a lot of funny ass stuff in here…buried in an hour long punk behemoth with more than one 5+ min long song. Do the songs rock, yeah? Do they sustain that rock hardness…dunno, but they made me laugh

Some good stuff in here. Probably not enough to justify it on this list but a nice change of pace.

some interesting lyrics

This one caught me by surprise. Punk adjacent, and there's more than a few moments where they nail a groove or land a face melting guitar solo, or it might be a moment of the percussion dropping a bongo where my ears perked up and a smile crept across my face as my head started to bob. Pretty good stuff overall, even if there is no mistaking from song to song that they are definitely sticking to their sound and their lyrics could have been written by 13 year olds who want to holler swear words a loud as they can.

Well didn't know what to expect but didn't think it would be a trip back to 70s punk. All I could hear the whole way through was the early Damned.

Never even heard of this band. Cheered up a Saturday morning!

Based on the band and album names I was expecting much worse. The pizza-themed lyrics notwithstanding, it has a kind of hair metal vibe that I like. These guys seem like goofballs, the Westminster Quarters part is confirmation of the pizza lyric suspicion. The music gets a 4, the lyrics get a 1. It's like dirty Norwegian Offspring. That's not fair, these guys are 100% better than Offspring. Back to Dungaree High is like a Ramones tribute band song. They're like the male Donnas.

Nope nope nope - a million times nope. I am 350ish albums in and listened to some questionable albums on this list but none as bad as this one. The music is bad the lyrics confusingly childish - like if 3 “bad boy” 5th graders sat down and penned every combination of every bad word they thought they knew in an effort to shock other 5th graders. I can’t accept english as a second language excuse on this one…it’s deliberate through and through. All involved in this one can burn in hell. 1/5

I enjoyed this album, just some nice headbang tunes for a roadtrip. Not a highbrow album of any kind just a bit of fun.

Every song sounds the same, kinda rocks but also kinda sucks eh. No bonus points for name or whatever it is they stand for.

Not my thing at all

Here we have an album of very decent peaks but startlingly low troughs from a rock band that I've never heard before. I love the opening track. The guitar is fantastic and I love that it's just about their favourite pizza place - even the tale that the song generated so much publicity for it that it became overwhelmed and had to close down! Prince of the Rodeo is another fabulous track, and there are enough power chords and interesting riffs dotted around the album to satisfy. But there are bands that have written better albums than this that will wonder what Rendez-vous With Anus did to push this album onto the 1001! It was funny when I was 14. It's just eye-rolling now. Apparently, the band considered calling themselves Nazipenis when they were formed, but we're advised they wouldn't sell any records. It shows they may have the tendency to try and shock, or just be immature! So, some great tunes, but crappy lyrics, so 2 rusty sheriffs badges from me.

Took a ride in 6 different directions

I had a lot of friends in the early 2000s who were into Turbonegro. I never owned any albums myself but I heard them a lot, and I genuinely enjoy this. Still, there’s a part of me that suspects a large part of their appeal was that this band was a safe space to nominally straight punk boys and men to express their latent homoerotic tendencies. Rendezvous with anus, indeed.

This was very fun and silly.

I listened to this whilst operating noisy machinery, which I must say helped enormously. Silly lyrics only saved somewhat by a bit of nice guitar playing. Might revise to a 1 eventually.

Reminds me of The Hives

Listened in the car. A pleasant surprise! Great energy, good riffs and solos, and the jammier sections don't overstay their welcome. The lyrics are not great, and it's not the most groundbreaking sound in the world but it certainly was a fun listen!

My vibes.

I was surprised by this, coming in blind and with low expectations, and being hit by a wave of propulsive punk. An obvious, and superior, precursor to The Hives etc. Yeah, the lyrics are dumb, but it's only the sound and energy that matters.

40 minutes of very fun punk rock. The attitude is loose, but not the production or the performances, which are stellar. I look forward to looking further into this band- had no idea they were Scandinavian! Key track here was the immensely catchy "Zillion Dollar Sadist"

This is super cheesy. Punk band wants to be hair metal or hair metal wants to be punk? The good news is if you like one song you'll like the whole thing since it all sounds exactly the same. I believe they achieved what they were going for, it's crisp sounding, band is talented, my ears hate it.
