Reviews (page 4 of 7)
I find this hard to place on one listen. His voice is so distinct and powerful that it is almost distracting. I think my rating would move around with multiple listens. On first listen, the opening track is the one that stuck with me the most.
I didn't know this singer. Good voice, great tunes. Good album.
well its aight
Scott Walker has a good voice, maybe even a great one, but someone forgot that the rest of the music has to actually be, well, listenable. Pretty much every song sounds slightly watered down and that makes this whole thing suffer.
I always want to like Scott Walker more than I do. I like the timbre of his voice but his style is a bit musical theatre for me. This album is full of glossy, crooner style songs, but his lyrics have more twists and politics than your average crooner standard. He’s like a goth Frankie Valli or a cool Tom Jones. The pared down backing music gives it a less bombastic feel than Scotts 1, 2 and 3, but it still feels quite Brelian. Scott Walker doesn’t change the way he sings, and with the stripped back sound, I don’t really think it works for me though. I hear Neil Diamond in this, and the influence on Jarvis Cocker and Morrissey. It has a place in the book because it is so influential, it’s just a very odd sound.
This is fine, but there’s better examples in the genre.
An album of Baroque pop with soft, swaying filmic orchestral arrangements. Romantic strings and a warm, gentle vocal. Not my usual thing but I quite enjoyed some of the tracks - The Old Man's Back Again, Get Behind Me, Hero of the War. Enjoyed it enough to explore some of his other work.
Quite pleasant.
Kind of just okay for me. Sometimes I liked it and other times it felt a little Donny Osmond.
This album grew on me a bit as it went on. Enjoyable listen. Highlights: "Rhymes of Goodbye"
10/1/25. Scott Walker's music is intriguing, you'll never be bored. I'll have to come back to this and revisit more of his work; I think I like Scott 2 a little more.
It sort of feels like listening to an album of Christmas carols. Old fashioned, but quite enjoyable.
Actually petty interesting 3.5
A really great listen. Fantastic songwriting and production.
Scott Walker has a very good voice and there were a few songs on here that I actually liked a good amount (eg Hero of the War). I just can't see myself coming back to this album over and over again. I would rather listen to Gordon Lightfoot, who constructs better songs and isn't as reliant on trying to create things that are too bombastic or sound so loungy. Still, this is a decent album, carried mainly by his voice.
Easy listening
So I actually really liked the story telling of this album but that was it.
I like the last part of the album better then the rest of it. But overall this album is pretty skipable
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: ? I usually am able to pull out at least one standout track when I write these reviews, and if I don't that's usually a conscious choice to not select something. For this album I'm sort of coming up empty. I am not particularly impressed by this album. It's not objectively bad or even subjectively bad, but its not really good either? I don't know what to make of what I'm listening to. Is this a concept album? Is there an underlying theme? What is the genre. Is this a pop album? I have this weird pervasive thought that Scott is singing these songs on a stage, live, in front of people. He's some sort of Vegas singer, putting on a show in a lounge. Its like he's part of a band that's playing music, maybe for a talk show host or something. I will almost certainly forget I ever listened to Scott Walker after today, and would be surprised to see another entry on the List.
I enjoyed it but it didn't quite reach the potential I felt it had.
Decent listen.
It's OK and might improve with a few more listens. It does feel a bit like he has the style but leaves me cold.
Didn't feel like anything special to me. Fine.
skibop energy, guy have multiple voices and can say a lot of gossips about the ocean. 3.5
5.5/10
Scott Walker's Scott 4 is a pretty decent late 60s album. It’s definitely from that era, from the instrumentals to the soft way he sings. Standouts that I personally enjoyed the most are the somber The Seventh Seal, which tells a story of a knight trying to save a girl falsely accused of witchcraft by playing a chess game with the grim reaper. I also quite enjoyed Angels of Ashes. I love fallen angel stories, and Christian religious imagery in general, and this album has a lot of that. Boy Child, another somber song about a boy finding his way. It reminds me a lot of Phantom of The Opera’s Learn to be Lonely, which explores the Phantom’s loneliness and the fact he needed to be lonely to survive. I also enjoyed both Duchess and Rhymes of Goodbye, both very melancholy songs. Most of this album is very somber, and I like it that way. Overall though, a lot of the lyrics sound off and out of place. Maybe it’s just a 60s thing, but the beat of the instrumentals was off in some places and I felt like a lot of the time he was just ad libbing to fill space. I do love the jab at Stalin in The Old Man’s Back Again. Nice to see jabs at dictators. So bonus points for that. I judge albums a lot on how good they would be on my character playlists, which is probably just a me thing, but on that scale, I did find a lot of them I could fit onto those. Boy Child is going directly on Phantoms playlist, that’s for sure. Generally, this is a pretty solid listen, and I would recommend it. If you like somber 60s music, then this one is for you.
Good
Väger mellan 2 och 3. Låter rätt bra men ospännande. Skulle absolut kunna lyssna på det igen dock så får bli 3.
There's 4ish songs that get more upbeat and jaunty, and I sort of enjoy those in a Neil Diamond or Tom Jones sort of way. The ballads are more interchangeable and less interesting. Didn't dislike it, but no idea what makes it required listening.
Alltid så dramatiska från honom.
Sehr konzertant, viele Streicher
Melodious.
Weird but interesting and the voice was enjoyable. Was getting bored after 20ish minutes though. 5/10
What a voice! It’s like listening to Richard Hawley. Great stuff.
Pelseant enough but was expecting more given the esteem Scott walker is held in 3.5*
Scott Walker: Scott 4: I don't even want to think about what happened to Scott 1-3. This is some pretty generic but still solid enough pretentious pop music. Very easy to listen to, but not something that stands out at all. 7/10
Well, another Scott Walker piece. It's fine. He's a good baroque-ish crooner. But why did we need two of these?
Pleasant. Enjoyed his voice and the orchestration. Not much else to say
Hey it’s not every day you hear a song about a man playing chess with Death. I appreciate the poet/songwriter genre inhabited by others like Leonard Cohen… but unfortunately this album didn’t take me very far.
Chill
This was interesting for a pop albums in the 60s. So dark. It’s not as surprising looking at it through today’s lens but this seems like a bit of a wild card for the time.
this was interesting. feels like a definite precursor to the Nick Cave archetype. the big booming voice telling stories to music. i didn’t find myself loving it though, it wasn’t bad but it didn’t hook me. 2 feels too low though because it does get there sometimes so we’ll go low 3
Je trouve que la voix ne "fit" pas avec la musique. Mais c'est très bien. 3.5/5. Mais pas forcément 4/5.
I like him but it’s nothing to write home about
Nick cave clearly loved this boy
Never heard of the guy so it was nice to get introduced to an artist I've never heard of. Lots of mid-tempo ballads with a Barry Manilow flair. Strangely his singing from stanzas and chorus follow the same the vocal inflections and notes with no deviating. At times, it felt like you were listening to the same lines on repeat over and over again. All in all, I'm glad I know about Scott Walker, but doubt I'll ever seek out his music.
A bit arch for my liking but some terrific moments.
Loved this voice. I'm pretty sure I'd never heard this guy's music before, but his songs sounded instantly memorable. Old man's back again was great.
Very good album
Standard. Good Not life changing, but not everything is
Voice is nice. Compositions a bit too monotonous.
Another weird album that must be examined repeatedly to tease out any true meaning.
decent but ok mate
Some great tracks.
Hm. Nice voice and pleasant songs, but pretty slow. Didn't grab me.
Solid listen.
Qué se yo, linda voz. Muy aburrido igual. Nota: 2.6
Great voice and easy listening sound.
I started this album and his voice sounded so familiar to me, but I couldn't place it. Finally I got to "The Old Man's Back Again" and looked the track up on allmusic. It appeared on the chill DJ set "Late Night Tales" by Air. I liked that song in that mix (the whole set is great). A whole album of Scott Walker though? That's one of those "you had to be there" sort of things. I'm sure this is foundational to a lot of Brits, but I'm hitting it 50+ years later and from the other side of the pond, and it's fine, but doesn't seem so essential to me. But check out Late Night Tales series. Lots of good, chill music.
Loving his deep soft voice. The Seventh Seal had a really cool Tex Mex sound to it. Hero Of The War was a good anti war song with very well done lyrics. The Old Man's Back Again had a nice story to it and a great bass guitar beat. Get Behind Me was a lot of fun. Rhymes Of Goodbye was a good song to end it on. Best song: The Seventh Seal
Not bad for what it is.
Not bad. Was pretty pleasant at times.
3.5
Interesting - very theatrical and dramatic, but not overbearingly so. The orchestral arrangements are nice and Walker’s voice is smooth. I know I listened to another “Scott” album for this project and I don’t remember much about it; I think I preferred this one. Favorite: The Seventh Seal 3
Not terrible but also not great
I don’t understand how this was avant garde even for its time? It felt like something my grandparents would have played on the crackly old wireless when I was a kid. Truly just fine.
Hmmm. I was cautiously positive about ‘Scott 2’ and was looking forward to this, as I feel there’s a lot to like about the guy. At first, however, I was unimpressed; the slower songs in particular seemed kinda formless and never really got going. Things picked up in the second half though, with The Old Man’s Back Again the standout among a stronger set of tunes. I’ll once again give ol’ Scottie the benefit of the doubt as, again, there’s lots to like, despite the flaws.
Wasn’t sure about Scott 2, but starting this album off with a song about The Seventh Seal has me intrigued. This is exactly the type of pretentious shit I love. The orchestral arrangements are really great on this record. They’re psychedelic, full of depth, soulful, and sometimes avant garde. They feel very forward thinking for their time and you can easily see where a band like Stereolab might have drawn influence from Walker. Really like Scott 4, even if the music is more intriguing to me than his voice.
3/5 pretty good
not for me, but i get the appeal
Day 3: Scott 4-Scott Walker-1969 I'm not gonna say this is a bad album but it wasn't really for me. However, I did really enjoy the song "Get Behind Me" this song also gave me "The Guess Who" vibes. Anyway, most of the songs sounded pretty similar and a lot of them were also ballads and I don't have a problem with Ballads, I just think those needed to be a bit more limited. On the other hand, something I did like was his voice and some lyrics on "Scott 4" were pretty interesting. As a result for all of this I give this album a 3/5 as I think it was decent but just got boring at times when it didn't need too, since this album is only 32 minutes long. Rating: 3/5 Favorite Song: Get Behind Me
It's a pretty listen and his voice is great, however, it's not fully my thing. I don't know what's holding me back from loving it. 6/10
This album was pretty good, it’s a little too slow/mellow for my tastes but it was solidly a good listen. I was a fan of his voice it’s really soothing and the instrumentation was very pleasant
Ok singing voice, ok instrumentals.
scott signs a goos dfew tunes
Ganska många goa låtar. Men manboy eller vad fan den hette var typ den tråkigaste och sämsta låten jag har hört det här årtiondet så den drar ju ner betyget
Aight
A troubadour sings his tunes. Not sure if there is more significance to be found here, but it was fine.
Känner på samma sätt som sist det var SW. Det är en behaglig röst, men ingen låt sticker iväg. Det saknas några riktigt bra låtar. Det är bara smånajs nu. Bäst är "The Old Man's Back Again...".
Bättre än förra skivan med honom (nr 2). Gillar Morricone-känslan i första låten parad med hans bombastiska röst. Därefter blir det lite tristare, fram till att det lyfter med The old man’s back again och avslutar på en lite högre nivå. Stabil trea.
great voice, not too sure about the songs
I’m not sure what I scored his other records on this list but they all seem to have elicited the same emotions - I’d like to like them but they are too overwrought and forgettable.
This one was super solid, I loved the use of strings. Only reason why this isn't a 4 is because it didn't hold my attention the entire time, but still super solid.
Ihan kelvollista laulumusiikkia. 3/5
Needs another listen, wasn't sure about it at the start and enjoyed it more as the album went, it may be something that grows on you, vocals are great, real cinematic feel to the songs.
Feels very much like Quentin Tarantino would use these in a Western
On a pas eu Scott 2 la semaine dernière? Décidément, ils nous donneront pas les Scott impaires de sitôt.
Ok, but nothing wowed me.
A couple of good songs like the intro, the rest is quite boring. I did copy afew to playlists but will not listen to the whole album again.
Þetta var mjög fín plata þó svo að lögin væru öll keimlík og ekkert þeirra standi sérstaklega upp úr. Fín bakgrunnsplata myndi ég segja en samt plata sem ég mun fljótt gleyma og aldrei spila aftur
Correcto
I'm a bit disappointed that I was digging this. It feels pretentious but I was in the mood for something weird and over the top the day it got me. Not awful but I feel like if I came back to this in a month I may wonder what I was finding in it. Who knows.
opening brass line was goated. kinda zoned out for this one tbh. i remember thinking “oh, this is good” but not much else. no standouts but also nothing offensive to my ears. 3/5.
More music I would expect to hear on a Quentin Tarantino movie soundtrack. Overly dramatic and oozes late 60s.
Really really strong start with The Seventh Seal but I never enjoyed another song to the same degree. Easy on the ears but I don't think this is one that will stay in my memory for long. Favorite Song: The Seventh Seal
Scott Walker proved to me he's a very good musician. In a display that can be described as swooning and operatic, Walker delivers a short and sweet LP of ballads. For whatever reason, I just don't feel he puts the ball over the goal line, so to speak. It may just be I wasn't thrilled with the performance of songs I enjoyed. Regardless, partial marks to Mr. Walker 7.5/10 Favorite Song: Seventh Seal
6/10 This was fine. I don’t know if I’ll return to this but it was perfectly fine. I couldn’t decide if I liked his voice or if it grated on me. But I liked the instrumentation a lot. Favorite Song: Duchess
This is one of the few artists I had never heard of before listening to this. Even reading the Apple Music summary or the Wikipedia summary still had no idea who this guy was. I do like his voice. I think he’s got a very good voice. It’s some parts. He actually reminds me of Arthur Lee and love, which may sound a little weird. But I didn’t find anything really remarkable about it.
Much better than Scott 2. Still not big into this style, but this one had songs I liked and the lyrics were good. Favorites were The Seventh Seal, Hero Of The War, and The Old Man’s Back Again.
Feels like a 50’s Sinatra style album but this is from 69 so don’t know what he’s playing at here. Other than that, most of the songs are generic ballads, he has good vocals but most of the songs are just quite boring musically and lyrically. However, I did really like hero of the war and the bass on his most popular song (old man’s back again) slaps, get behind me was good as well. Was originally gonna give this a high 2 but those songs are good enough to lift it up to a low 3(5/10).
7/10
Late 60s singer songwriter pop. Good instrumentation and vocal. Pretty boring.
okay
То ок, то скучно. Под настроение.
Quite the unique sound for the age, I do like some of his other songs too.
I don't think this really knows what it wants to be. It's croonery and corny at the beginning, then it sounds like it belongs in a James Bond film, but in the Roger Moore era. It's quite impressive from an instrumental, production standpoint and he has a good voice if you like that sort of thing. The last couple of tracks were surprisingly great but nowhere near good enough to rescue this as an album, for me.
Tempted to give this four stars on account of The Old Man’s Back Again. But no. (The Boy Child retrospective of 60’s Scott Walker is very good, and neatly reins in his prolix instincts. That deserves at least four stars.£
АЙ ЭМ Э МОДЕРН СКОТТ УОКЕР АЙ ЭМ Э СУРПРАЙЗИНГЛИ СМУЗ ТОКЕР Лучшая песня - Duchess.
Not sure how I feel about this album. It's pleasant but not really engaging for me.
It was alright
I've apparently listened to an album from this guy already. Would've never known. Anyway, this guy definitely has a knack for belting some melodic ballads. Interesting songwriting and production too. Starts a little slow, but slowly picks up in quality as the album progresses.
Good voice and more interesting music than just pure background filler.
Solid 60’s baroque pop, will return to it.
26/1089 - It's alright. Voice has too much vibrato for my liking.
- gefiel mir echt gut, obwohl es nichts ist, was ich mir mal so anmachen würde - war kurzweilig und entspannt 2,75 / 5
I do not really enjoy this character the 'man with microphone' that is. This one is like Niel Diamond on acid, not uninteresting, but not worth more than a glanceing listen. Think Tim Buckley meets Nick Cave, yeah its a little cringe, but this record boasts great writting and excellent production
По мнению А: 3/5 По мнению С: 3/5 ИТОГОВАЯ ОЦЕНКА: 3/5 (10.02.2025)
First 3 or 4 pretty slow but when Scott picks it up later on the album it gets fun. He has a really good voice and for some reason on some tracks bass came on strong. 3.5 gonna round down.
While I feel there are a couple of standout tracks I believe it's really a standout album.
scott free? or thour
Gets better as the album goes on. I appreciate the songwriting and his voice, but ultimately this over dramatic style just isn't for me (and probably actually detracts from what I'd imagine are decent lyrics and interesting subject matters). Interesting to see where the Arctic Monkeys took inspiration from their last couple of albums, though. BTW what's with the photo used on the cover - was that really the best shot they could get of him?
I liked this a lot more than "Scott 2", but I still have reservations about Walker's voice which is too rich/smooth for me. I liked the instrumentation a fair bit though.
The album was ok. Nothing really stood out, but it was pleasant enough to listen to. Do I want to delver into his back catalogue? no. Will I listen to this again? probably not, but It was fine to listen to 3 stars
great news for people who like Syd Barett and Leonard Cohen
Album 664 of 1001 Scott Walker - Scott 4 (1969) Rating : 3 / 5 Consisting of baroque pop, folk, and avant-garde influences along with Walker's deep, baritone voice and poetic lyrics, and rich instrumentation, this creates a "haunting and evocative listening experience". A nice listen but very lowkey.
He has a great voice but this whole thing is a bit underwhelming. The song structure just isn’t there, there is no hook to grab on to with most of the tracks. Also, I know that ‘Duchess’ song but I have no clue where from
good enough is NEVER good enough -rivera
6/10 - it’s like Scott 2 but newer
Hard to understand without the context of Scott 3
Something my grandpa would listen to. Made me feel like a 60's astronaut dancing among the stars so that's pretty cool but overall the music was mid
I liked it.
Worlds strongest man I enjoyed. I really liked the strings backing throughout the album. But overall just a bit boring. Feels like not much progression in the songs idk. Also there’s no way I’m gonna write this much for every album that would be absurd.
Some very powerful songs, I like the vocals and the strings - some tracks perhaps a bit too dramatic for my taste, will definitely re-listen to this album.
It's very dramatic - leaning quite a long way into the melodramatic. There's lots of musical swells and exaggerated crooning going on, which I do like sometimes, it's just that it's not always very exciting here. Some of the songs kind of merged into another and passed me by, but there were some nice ones in here too. 2.5 rounded up.
So... if we hadn't already had a Scott Walker album, this would be a 3 without a lot of thought. I like his voice, there's an obvious sincerity to the proceedings, but it's on the other side of schlocky for my tastes. Which feels unfair to say, but it encapsulates my general regard for this muisc. Like, how is this so different from a Donny Osmond record (he asks with no intention of finding out)? But as I rated the first Scott Walker entry (Scott 2) with a 3, I liked this one more. Does it deserve a 4? I'm overthinking it. This is a 3.5, but it's tethered to the 3...
Not my thing He whines to much
not moving baroque pop
It was ok, no tracks jumped out and grabbed me.
It wasn't bad at all. Musically it was ok and he has a nice singing voice and style. I just couldn't get into it. It sounded a bit like all the songs were made up on the spot. At times his voice veered into Vic Reeves doing his club singer, or Neil Hannnon and The Divine Comedy.
II think this was ahead of it’s time. The singing style is more 80s and this thing came out in 69 damn. I dont like the singing style tho. Instrumentals sound crisp and beautiful tho wow
3.5
It's ok. It's nice and calm, but some of the text maybe is not what I tend to listen to.
6/10. It's an interesting and dramatic album. However, it's not really my vibe, and it gets somewhat boring over time. :)
Wow. I dont even know how to describe this one. It was pleasant but not sure id listen to again
This kind of reminded me of Engelbert Humperdink or Tom Jones but maybe less commercialized? His music feels maybe more... indie?? than the music by Tom Jones and Engelbert. It's funny, I just googled "Scott Walker Tom Jones" and apparently Scott Walker hated being compared to Tom Jones. That checks out. Scott Walker has an excellent voice and I love the latin jazz influence. It was lacking in bangers though IMO. I appreciated it but since it was so close to the artists I mentioned I was hoping for one song where he just belts loud.
This is a pretty cool record. Definitely unique and weird. Its not really rock, its not really jazz or soul. It's kind of all of those things under the guise of the "singer-songwriter." Really cool strings and keyboards. It has a bit of "big band" influence. Also, really really cool and driving bass lines throughout. His voice is haunting and kind of creepy but also has that touch sensuality, which I think is what creates such a cool atmosphere with this record. Get Behind Me is the coolest song on the record.
It probably should not but Scott 4 reminds me of some of the Leonard Cohen albums I have heard. I enjoyed this one more than I enjoyed most of the other Leonard Cohen albums though. Maybe it is Scott Walker's voice that sounds like late period Cohen. Good album and I am interested in hearing Scott 2 that we get on this list as well. That one apparently has a lot of covers and so I'm a little more skeptical that I will enjoy it as much. We shall see.
got more into it as the album went on, where did the bassline in The old Man's Back come from?!?
Hey it’s not every day you hear a song about a man playing chess with Death. I appreciate the poet/songwriter genre inhabited by others like Leonard Cohen… but unfortunately this album didn’t take me very far.
Verging on the edge of cheesy, Scott 4 is a strange, orchestrated over-the-top album that is at least interesting, with some decent songs from a decent singer. I don't feel a connection what so ever, I'm not a fan, but for the most part I enjoyed the songs despite the nostalgic sound, though they are not memorable in any way. Can't wait for Scott 5, not!
I was thinking I hated this at first as it sounded as pretentious as a man who names 4 albums after him. But. His deep booming voice, the general sadness of it grew on me. I think it was actually solid maybe.
This guys out here typing to teach UK history 101
A strange and cheesy but still hauntig record.
Wasn't a fan when this started. But it did grow on me a bit
Enjoyable surprise, though no individual songs stood out to me.
Liked this more than Scott 2. I would say I like this ok. 3.25/5
Better than I thought it would be, not as good as I'd have liked.
Never heard of this guy before. This first song is cool sounding has that latin sound. I like his voice. HAHA the more I hear his voice the more it reminds me of that sad clown from PMJB Puddles Pitty Party? something like that. Meh not crazy abou this. I mean it's nice but meh. Good thing it's only 32 min long. Hm I guess this The Old Man's Back Again sounds familiar
It’s different than most 60s records you get on these sorta lists, but didn’t do anything particular for me. Fine.
For some reason I love his vocals and the general vibe of the album. It lacks good songs and fades a bit.
Mixed bag. Some absolute classics like old man's back again and enjoyed the opener, seventh seal. Scott is a tad pretentious and would be very surprised if he hasn't been punched often.
How Scott Walker got two albums on this list is beyond me, but good for him.
Meh. Not my thing.
I’m giving this a 3, but I have a feeling I’ll be revisiting soon, and I might regret this rating. It didn’t quite work for me, but something definitely peaked my interest, so there is that.
And another one for Scott Walker? Virtually ignored by everyone upon release, but not completely terrible, is that why it's on the list? Or because it was the first album he wrote all the songs for instead of covering a bunch of Jacques Brel? It wasn't as fun as Scott Walker 2, so maybe Brel is the superior songwriter. It felt like a lot of songs you hear as the credits roll in old Westerns. I didn't hate it but I did find it boring. He's still got a nice, booming voice. It's either a 2 or a 3. Coin flip.
Weird, lounge-y, ahead of its time. Scott Walker sounds like how alternative artists do 60s homages now - see Arctic Monkeys’ Tranquility Bae Hotel & Casino. “The Old Man’s Back Again” was an enjoyable track. I liked the opening track too. With the trumpets it reminded me a bit of Mexican flair and also Father John Misty. I doubt I’ll come back to this but I’m glad I heard it.
I mean, the guy has a smooth voice, and that’s not going unappreciated. But this record doesn’t do much for me.
I really liked his voice. Cool album.
Ambitious. I respect the hell out of making a weird polished pop album with bergman references, and many wilder topics. I like the spanish guitar, the horns. Songs don't land that hard though.
Moody cool, but also moody lame.
It was nice, not my usual taste in music. But it was short and simple
ik weet het niet goed... goeie muziek, stem past er niet altijd bij, goeie teksten meestal... twijfelgeval
The Old Man's Back Again is fucking amazing
Was bracing myself for some BS, after his second self-titled I get a little triggered when I see the name "Scott Walker." But honestly, this one was pretty good. It seems like he took that cabaret-style from the earlier work and transfigured it a bit into something darker. The word that came to mind for me on a few was "desperado." This was a good listen overall. Favorite tracks: The Seventh Seal, Hero of the War, The Old Man's Back Again. Album art: Just a headshot of Scott (I assume), but the pose is more brooding, more indicative perhaps of the darkness. Color grading is good. 3.5/5
I mean, the voice is nice. But you’d be kidding yourself if you think this should’ve gotten bigger. While it’s better than any Tim Buckley sad times and miserable tunes, it still falls short of being exciting: being new, interesting, or even just enjoyable. It’s for the background and should probably remain that way.
Sleepy 60's singer/sonwriter stuff that is pretty okay if you can stay conscious through it. tbh I didn't do a very thorough job of going through the album because I needed something with more pep in the step, and this wasn't it, though from the songs I did listen to there's certainly something to Walkers work. He's got a interesting voice, almost like a crooner, that makes his stuff stand out a bit.
Nostalgic 60s/70s acoustic with strings vive for the entire album. Nice for fans of acoustic music from that time period.
Scott Walker is an interesting dude, you guys.
Singer songwriter with a folksy feel. A perfectly acceptable album.
Some good songs, but wasn't very consistent throughout
I almost like The Seventh Seal, Angel of Ashes, Hero of the War, The Old Man’s Back Again
This fucking guy, again!?
I'm a little bothered by how much I identified with some the rather depressing lyrics.
I like this album quite a bit. Even though I've never heard any of Walker's works. There's not much difference between the songs. This week has been mostly mediocre with one great album. (In Rainbows) I'm afraid there's no highlights on today's album. 3 stars for "Scott 4".
Scott walker was always interesting. This is not as bizarrely weird as some of his work (really go and listen to Jesse. It’s about Elvis in his mother’s womb dealing with his dead twin). But it’s still interesting. Must listen? Hmmmm.
New to me. As iconic and distinctive as V vintage wood panelling, lava lamps, burnt orange and brown patterned couches with piping. A very specific style. I read some reviews and decided to give it a go. Unsure if I can listen to it without almost giggling and listening to it ironically/satirically. ....orchestral with rich vocals, but also very serious and evenly gravely ernest this 'baroque pop' addresses the serious themes of the unsettled 60s where war and death hung over the youth. It's well made. I find it depressing and soothing and yet - it tickles my funny bone. But ultimately... It's a bit heavy and croony.
-I’ve listened to a few songs from his album The Drift and was expecting this to be more like that. It’s still pretty cool though, I love his voice -Favorites are The Seventh Seal and The Old Man’s Back Again
Something so campy about this that I find endearing. Also weird that this guy has at least 2 records on the list.
01) The Seventh Seal - 8,0 02) On Your Own Again - 7,5 03) The World's Strongest Man - 7,0 04) Angels of Ashes - 7,0 05) Boy Child - 6,5 06) Hero of the War - 7,0 07) The Old Man's Back Again (Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime) - 7,5 08) Duchess - 6,5 09) Get Behind Me - 7,0 10) Rhymes of Goodbye - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,05 (71/100) Current ranking: 151/233 Well, the sun ain't gonna shine on this album anymore, at least for me.
Not the best, not the worst. 2.5 stars.
Clearly well-constructed baroque pop that I just don’t care that much about. 3/5
Interesting, but not mind blowing.
Favorite Track: The Seventh Seal
Pop viejuno. Ni fu ni fa.
Tämä ei ole ihan niin paskaa kuin aikaisempi scott, vaikka onkin vieläkin hiukan musikaalimaista. Jopa ihan miellyttävää. Parhaat: The Seventh Seal, Angels Of Ashes, The Old Man's Back Again.
Interesting voice and instrumentation. I was unsure if I would like this until I heard those strings come into the first track. Very mysterious and intriguing sound that is supported by equally interesting lyrics. I like a lot of modern music that sounds like this and I think that some of my favorite acts were probably inspired by Scott Walker, like Father John Misty comes to mind. I enjoyed it, didn't dislike it, but didn't love it.
I liked it but I probably won't ever listen to it again
This was another artist I've encountered on this project that I had never heard of, and what all Scott Walker brought to the table caught me by surprise, even though the album clocked in at just over 30 minutes in total. He is not the typical late 60's singer-songwriter by any means. Though there are some of those elements in songs like "Angels of Ashes" and "Rhymes Of Goodbye", there's definite country and gospel influences showing as well. You are also able to hear a more robust sound that is more suited for a rock-opera with a backing orchestra on songs like "The Seventh Seal" which opened the album and "Get Behind Me" later on the tracklist. This album packs alot in such a small package, and Walker should be commended in his versatility. The fact that I hadn't even heard of him with this terrific work shows the wealth of talent in his era. 7/10
This was a weird one! Genuinely don't fully know what to make of it. I'm thinking I will need at least one relisten to really hone in on how I feel about it. I don't think I hated it though. From first listen I liked Seventh Seal and The Old Man is Back Again. If I had to try to define it, I like his vocals, I like the lyrics, but the instrumentals were either a big hit or miss for me. Might be one of those ones that grows on me.
That opening track was a beast! The rest of the songs are decent, but a bit warbly. Like he's singing through a fan. 3 trumpets out of 5
Solid work from Scott, opening track is awesome. 3.5 stars.
The stuff that made your nan swoon. Pretty basic but had an interesting scat part towards end of album
Started really strong but somewhat lost interest midway through. 3.5 though. solid album
I like the orchestral and choral bits. Its produced VERY well. Its ok. This sounds like music in the transitions of Tarantino films. i would go 2.5 but its not an option. 2 would imply its not good so we are going with 3
Nice, peaceful music. Enjoyed having this in the background. Nothing amazing, but it was okay.
Tried a few times with Scott but it doesn’t do it for me. Some interesting songs and some boring ones.
This is the weirdest music I have heard in a very long time. And I listen to A LOT of weird music.
Operatic-feeling voice, soft pop music
Not what I expected from an artist I’d never heard before and was judging solely on the album cover. I was expecting either something exciting and jazzy, or maybe weird and eclectic, I felt like I got banality.
Anything that sounds like this I’m gonna kind of enjoy because it all sounds like music that can be sampled. But other than that I didn’t enjoy this that much. I thought the vibes were kinda cool and the album cover was dope but the music never took me somewhere emotionally and the vocals never had anything that made me remember them.
An okay album. Some pretty lyrical imagery, but I didn't find it overly memorable. 3/5.
Easy listening, interesting voice and lyrics.
Just emerging from a deep-dive into Pantera's discography, this is an extreme change of pace. Angles of Ashes is pretty with the sweeping strings and grand vocals; however, I find myself pretty bored. I think that's actually probably a decent enough summation of this record. The instrumentals are objectively pretty, but there is something about the vocals that runs against my taste. Feels preachy / pretentious in a way that only folk music can. The Old Man's Back Again is pretty cool. Very different in style to the rest of the album so far. Love the bouncy bass-line and drum shuffle -- very groovy. I also really enjoyed Rhymes of Goodbye as a folk-country closer. Album was down and up for me. I largely enjoyed the instrumentals and found a couple of the songs to be worthy of focus. Otherwise, I wasn't huge on the aesthetics at play. Nice clean production though, so credit where its due. This sits middle of the pack for me. 3/5
1st song feels like it would be in a Quintin Tarantino movie. Wasn't a bad listen. Definitely has that 60s/70s sound. 3 stars for me
Great voice, Scott! Has a bit of a bossa nova feel to the album with a grooving bassline. This one is definitely better than Scott 2.
Definitely liked this one more than Scott 2 which we got almost 400 albums ago. It was still a bit too poppy for my liking, but his voice is very good and this time there were some really nice guitar parts. I would be ok if Scott and Scott 3 are not included on this list.
Just went back and I did not like Scott 2. I just cannot take him super cereal with his voice but it's not bad. The Old Mans Back Again has some fantastic bass going on. There's actually some good bass on a lot of these songs definitely sticking out the most to me. And some really good orchestral parts as well. Feel like I liked this one a bit more than Scott 2 even though I still hate his stupid voice. Not going back to Scott 2 to find out either. Run of the mill 3.
Ok
Scott Walker reminds me of someone, but I can't place who. This is a good album: nothing really catchy, but I like his style.
Chill, nice voice
Interesting. At its best ("The Seventh Seal", "Get Behind Me"), this is Baroque pop that soars but I also think it sails pretty close to easy-listening territory at times. Nevertheless, grown-up themes (the Prague Spring!) abound.
He was described by the BBC upon his death as "one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in rock history" Never heard of him. Nice voice, subdued orchestration.I prefer Mel Torme. 3*
Very mellow and, at the same time, full of pathos - does that make it pathetic? I'm not sure, but I know that this particular sound could only come out of the 70s. 3/5
I wasn't familiar with Scott Walker. His voice reminds me of someone, but I can't place it. Maybe it was unique for the time, but it gets a little tedious now. There's a place for it, but probably not in my rotation. 3.4
3.5/5
Pretty cool!
The songs are in order; I'm less attracted by the performance, which is somewhat 'swollen'.
Ballad king with interesting lyrics.
Nice production on the tracks but I waited an entire album for something other than a depressing ballad and was disappointed. Low 3.
I've always preferred *Scott 3* to any of the other albums in that famous tetralogy of Scott Walker album. Including "critics' fave" *Scott 4*. *3* has more obvious experimental arrangements, such as that dissonant string section on opener "It's Raining Today"--which clearly inspired Jonny Greenwood for his own "glissandi" string arrangement on Radiohead's "How To Disappear Completely"... And it has more memorable original songs ("Copehhagen", "30 Century Man"), cinematic instrumentation ("Butterfly", "Winter Night") and stellar covers (Jacques Brel's "If You Go Away"). Guess Scott Walker's borderline-stilted and hackneyed gravitas is pretty much the same on 3 and 4, yet 3 is the only record I can see appearing in such a list. Even its drugged-out artwork is better than the one on *4*. You know what they say... "Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder". Not to say that *4* can't be excellent at times. "The Old Man's Back Again" and *Boy Child* are up there with the best tunes from *3*. Yet the first four tracks from this subsequent record still sound kind of boring to me. And if things get better after them, I feel like I prefer to listen to The Divine Comedy's "copy" of those sorts of songs rather than the original. It's an odd feeling, I gotta admit it. But I would lie if I stated the contrary. 3/5 for the purposes of this list. Translating to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5+3). Number of albums left to review: 235 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 330 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 195 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 247 (including this one)
This surprised me, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Simplistic I feel but kept me interested. I ain't got too much more to say tbh. Fav songs: -The Seventh Seal - The Old Man's Back Again - Duchess
Pretty good Baroque pop. For me, better than Scott 2.
Calm album, very peaceful Top tracks: Duchess, Get Behind Me
I wasn't sure what to expect with this as I head he can get a bit weird. Anyway they say this is his best and after my second listen it really started to grow on me. A sad crooner with a bent for the mythical. Faves: The Seventh Seal, The Old Man's Back Again
The Seventh Seal - 3.5 On Your Own Again - 3 The World's Strongest Man - 3 Angels of Ashes - 2.5 Boy Child - 3 Hero Of The War - 3.5 The Old Mans Back Again - 3.5 Duchess - 3.5 Get Behind Me - 3.5 Rhymes Of Goodbye - 3.5 Average - 3.25
I can see that it's really good, clever, artful, intriguing. But it's also just a bit too croony and orchestrated for me to truly love...
syngur auðvitað eins og engill. einna síst af fimmunni. 3,5 samt.
6/10 I like the song writing, the arrangements are good too. it feels like a lonely 60's crooner writing for the most depressing musical ever made. 4/1/2024
Honestly, it got better as I listened on. I enjoyed the last couple songs but towards the beginning I was falling asleep but not in a good way. It was rather boring but I do have to say it definitely picked up. It evens out, so not disappointed.
Not bad, but not really memorable.
I'll need to listen again later since this is something I would typically love, just didn't hit today
To me, this was like background music for an older generation. It wasn't unpleasant, just not my thing. Having said that, I may try to listen to it again.
I have heard good things about Scott Walker and was expecting to be blown away. I wasn't but it is intriguing and I think I will revisit.
Cool album, super original sounding, almost like if someone decided to sing over a video game OST
It was fine.
That first track had me hooked, then it was a wild ride on whether he was an early Orville peck or another morrissey guy. But it was ok
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: The old man’s back again, Get behind me
3-4
Interesting. Was not expecting this.
This whole goddamn album sounds like why Mike Myers made the character of Austin Powers. Baroque pop, aggressive, Andy Williams, Tom Jones motherlover. Which isn’t to say I didn’t like it. I really did. What a fascinating dude and a fascinating album.
Ok album but nothing special
Not sure
This guy again. Don’t hate it but don’t really like it too much.
It was okay. It definitely got better in the second half and it has some good moments, but Walker’s voice doesn’t do much for me. Some of the songs in the first half sounded like parodies of singers like Humperdinck.
Me gusta. Bueno. Tampoco uh!!! Llevadero. Corto. Bien! Lo conocí hoy. Bien!!, 👏👏👏👏👏
Listened Before? N Surprising! This sounds like Bowie with a more real-world theme. I have never heard of him but apparently he was a big Bowie influencer. I did really enjoy this one, but I disagree with the most popular song here. "The Old Man's Back Again" is interesting, but I think it probably lost a lot of its meaning over time. My favorite here was track 1 - The Seventh Seal. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: The Seventh Seal
Fint album. Fina melodier. Fina lyrics. Fina låtar. Stark 3
Well that was certainly different. Not horrible, but not my cup of tea either.
Interesting voice, but very boring. No songs have grabbed my attention at all, it's like good background music. Not terrible music, but not for me. A solid 3.
Very soft album. The singing is slow and comforting. None of the tracks were skips and they flow very smoothly. Sort of reminds me of the cars by the arctic monkeys. Almost like lounge music. 3.25
Was just ok start to finish.
This was ok
low energy. homme avec sa guitare. arrangement ornemental. egalement. rien de wow 6/10
not bad, but nothing exceptional. I'd listen to it again
interesting voice
Didn’t really enjoy Scott 2. Enjoyed this a bit more. I can definitely appreciate the musical genius behind it all but it just doesn’t really sit with me that well. All a bit too dramatic for me. Feels like a soundtrack to a 60s musical tv drama at times. 3.0
A great example of music I wouldn't look twice at normally but that I quite enjoyed. The opening track really hooked me in. It has an epic but ethereal quality. I don't think I'd put this on often but I think it's really well made, the instruments sound good and he has a swell voice (crooner). Standout Track: The Seventh Seal
I did not expect to enjoy this but it was quite lovely to make soup to
I thought that it felt longer than it actually was, but I really enjoyed this style of music. It was well-arranged and easy to listen to. His voice felt a little bit like he was doing an impression of someone though— something about it didn’t feel genuine and I can’t put my finger on it lol.
I was pretty mid on this, so I’d put it as 2 star vibes, but with 1 or 2 songs that were enjoyable enough to bring it to a 3
More like 3
Enjoyed this one, great voice and lush music. I think with more listens this would move up a star
lyhyt scotti tähän paikkaan. kiva tunnelmallinen melankolinen(suomi, suomi finland) folkki jointti.. muutama hyvä biisi muutama huono biisi. loppui juuri sen verran ajoissa että ei alkanut vituttaa kuulla tekoääntä.. tekoääni pakottaa laittaa rekisteriin alempaa hertsiä vaikka oikea ääni varmasti kimeämpi.. hohhoijjaa seventh seal
Old timey but well written
With no shortage of love for drama, Scott once again delivers what he hopes is the most majestic, cinematic record you've ever heard. And if you can get past the silliness of it, it's a lot of fun. Certainly better than Scott 2 (an earlier album on this list). I guess I feel this way because I knew more of what to expect this time around. Makes it easier to get past the barrier of entry. But the songs are just kind of better too. I went back and listened to a bit of Scott 2, and there's certainly an evolution in songwriting there. I'm not in any hurry to revisit this one, but it's completely bearable with some actual great tracks on it.
I had no idea that In The Nursery’s version of The Seventh Seal was a cover song. Gives this a +1.
An interesting experience that reminded me of Al Stewart and the moody blues
3.3/5 - Scott has such an interesting, enigmatic voice, I really do quite like it a lot. Some of the songs here fall a bit flat though. Fave Songs: The Seventh Seal, Hero of the War
vrlo mid
Par dobrih pjesama, par skroz bezveze
The World’s Strongest Man // Rhymes of Goodbye
Avant-Pop. Recht experimentell für ein Pop Album von 69. Allerdings auch ein bisschen zu ruhig und eintönig für meinen Geschmack.
Pretty nice really
Enjoyable sounding album, good singer
This is quality. It's a shame it was not more successful. Nonetheless, while it's very good, I wouldn't call it great. 3.5 stars, and while it's almost good enough to round up, I just don't feel like it belongs with most (all) of the other 4 star albums. Sorry, Scott. This is a very good album. Sorry it didn't garner more success.
My second time listening to this one on a greatest list. I really tried to enjoy this. I listened to this through a decent enough speaker. It wasn’t on as background music but instead actively listened to. I don’t get it.
3/5. While I had never heard of Scott Walker, I rather enjoyed his melancholy voice. “Hero of the War”, was my favorite song on this album. Like a 1969 Pop version of “One” by Metallica.
It was interesting. 3*
Nice.
There is something about 60s/70s Brit-Singer-Songwriter schmaltz that just falls flat. Scott Walker is no different here. 3/5
Different, liked his voice, but the songs themselves went in one ear and out the other
This was alright, I like these weird folk albums by people I've never heard of
Okay
