Reviews (page 3 of 8)
This jaunt into the roots of industrial went over gangbusters at the breakfast table. I don’t think I’ve seen the faces of my family look so uniformly miserable. I was slightly more enthusiastic, though the back half held my attention more than the first half: once there was a bit more structure. It prompted some intellectual curiosity. What inspires someone to make music like this? What elements impressed listeners enough to give it such a solid legacy? Could I make an album like this with my minimal musical skill set? Would I? Should I? I should? For real?
Yeah I get the rating here, this is an album that really tests the limits of what I’d consider “enjoyable”. I certainly wouldn’t just listen to this album for fun, but I did like the experience. I’d take it over any album that fails to be interesting.
I can’t say I enjoyed this but I’m glad it’s here.
Aggressive lmfao Completely unlike anything ive ever heard ill give it that but like ouchy on the ears. Is it good? Idk? Is it something that you should at least experience in music" yea I guess so, just so you arent naive to know this type of music is out there. I hated listening to this but maybe thats the point? The goal of art after all is to make the cosumer have an emotional response; whether it br joy, sadness, displeasure etc. So 3/5 because simply put, fuck kid rock, he at very least needs to be below this album
Cool experimental music
Wow. Noise. Challenging, interesting, chaotic. A tough listen.
Not for me but I'm sure it was setting new boundaries at the time
Honestly, I wasn't sure what to think about this one. It's a collection of German screaming and noise, and is obviously very experimental. But I did find myself getting into some of the beats once I acclimatized to the sounds. It might not be your thing and it's obviously going to be controversial, but I'll always take a wild swing that misses over another safe generic album.
LOUD NOISES BUT AT LEAST IT'S NOT ANOTHER BRIT POP/ROCK ALBUM
This is exactly what I imaged German industrial music to sound like.
Clank bang clonk bonk. IT WAS PRETTY NEAT.
A rough listen, mostly in a good way. I understand why it's in the bottom 20, but personally I'd disagree with that placement.
This is the kind of music that you know exists somewhere, which maybe.02% or less of the population actually listens to, and which less than .002% of that set actually enjoys, but that you know must have a presence on this list due to the fact that stuff like this is expected on said list. I felt for a short time like a sculptor, goggles on, buzzsawing steel and enduring the onslaught of sparks flying into my face. This is heavy-duty art-making music. In the end, I guess I liked it more than Tori Amos.
Dit ga ik niet vaker luisteren, maar vond het wel cool om gehoord te hebben. Vooruitstrevend, en nogal zichzelf.
Now this is actually interesting. Punk-y a bit with electronic vibes. Almost industrial punk.
Noisy and jangly
I get why this album is on the list, but I can’t imagine actually listening to this on a regular basis
Heavy proto industrial german art music - its dated by industrial standards but the fact this was recorded 45 years ago is a testament to their skill
A little too aggressive without melodic balance.
416/1089 - Some of the rhythms were fun but it's a bit one-note overall up until the ending "-dub" songs.
Is it interesting, yes very. Will I listen to it often, no , no I won’t. Still it gets points on vibe and originality.
No, I can't enjoy that. Is it music? Others can decide that. Is it worth listening to? Yes; but once suffices. I give it 3, because it is different, and I believe, they make this art not out of anger or destructivism, but they feel it.
Tétrico
Not my jam
El album 'Colapso' por 'Edificios Nuevos Derrumbándose' contiene motosierras y metales golpeados. Dicho así suena demencial y mola mogollón y así es
Hab ich ausversehen was genommen?! Hätte ich besser?
Ion get it
better than expected
Never listened. Expectations: None - Verdict: Good - Ok, so I have heard of these guys and now realise it's Blixa from The Bad Seeds. This is an interesting one as it's noisy but not the kind of noise I'm usually into. Walls of feedback and distortion are replaced by harsh percussion and punky rants. The title track wouldn't be out of place on a Swans album, great stuff.
Doing my part to move Kid Rock to the worst album slot! 🫡
6/10
Honestly kind of dig this
Pretty sure I heard a danke schoen in there
This is a very primitive album, actually. What I would say is pure industrial music. Not much of my taste, but I've enjoyed listening to it, which is something I didn't expect. Of course, it's a very experimental form of music, playing with sounds and, mostly, rhythmic instruments. I wouldn't listen to this music much but, honestly (and with no pretense), I consider it pretty interesting. The song I like the most is the title track, which is very tribal and, well... good. This album is pretty atmospheric, and it builds very well its aura, being enigmatic and very addictive too.
It was so interesting and weird, an experience for sure, that I give it a three even though I don’t need to listen to it again.
I respect this bands legacy & all the have influenced in this genre but they are not my cup of tea. That said im glad I did enjoy this album. I could hear the blueprint to so many bands I'm into. In my opinion a very bold first album.
Will I ever listen to this again? Probably not. Did I find it intriguing and enjoy hearing the genesis of a lot of "noise" music? Yes.
6/10
I was worried after reading some of these reviews. This type of experimental music usually isn't for me, but I wanted to go in with an open mind. Folks, this is a tough listen. Very noisy -- lots of shouting in German. But, to my surprise, as I continued through the album, it developed a sort of hypnotic sensibility. The second half of the album is *far* more cohesive than the first -- and a lot less shouty. I'm not saying that I'm going to put this on repeat or anything. It *is* better than Metal Machine Music, for sure. A lot of folks will just dispense with this and I can see why. Definitely rates higher than a 1.
Unlistenable. But I think that's the point. I pressed on, all the same. I quite enjoyed the rhythmic nature of it all. Plus some of the samples. Water drips against an industrial backdrop on Negativ Nein works well. Three stars for an unlistenable album is not bad going.
Often said to be the pinnacle of industrial, which is the art of banging on shit that sounds cool and setting it to some form of music. You may argue that Einsturzende Neubauten doesn't quite accomplish the second thing (on this album, at least, they would get more conventional on future releases, the sellouts) but some of the rhythms are pretty cool, you can see a semblance of a structure on some tracks, and Blixa Bargeld's voice has a visceral quality I enjoyed. Up to a point, anyway. By the end of "Helga," I had enough and since the rest of the CD tracks weren't on the original release, I stopped there. This is the kind of music I signed up for, to broaden my horizons a bit, and while I didn't mind taking the plunge in this case, I doubt I'll be wading in these waters very often.
This was really interesting. Idk if I'll ever listen to this again, but I am going to check out their other work.
Influential and interesting.
To be honest I have absolutely no idea how to rate this. I'd heard that this was one of the worst albums on this list, but I *think* I disagree. Yes it is very weird and at times difficult to listen to, but at least it's much more unique than a lot of the other ones on the list. It kept me wondering what the next track would sound like, so I'm just going straight down the middle.
I was bracing myself for this one. Heard nothing but bad about it. Honestly, it wasn't any where near as aweful as others seem to find it. True, it's not something I'd listen to again. Not exactly melodic, low budget noise. But I didn't mind the listen. I guess all my years of listening to other bizarre, crass, barely musical stuff has prepared me for this one.
Yes! Early industrial! Of course the album everyone hates, I enjoy. But then again, I enjoyed Throbbing Gristle. Sure today, anyone could make an album like this on their computer. But back in 1981, you did it with self made music machines, electronics, and just scraps of metal.
So I looked at my 1 star ratings, which include Coldplay, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, and U2... This is way better.
Fascinating.
Overall I like the concept, and the full detour from common popular music harmony.
A difficult journey into experimentation with sound. Industrial music stripped down to just noise. Like a soundtrack to a headache factory.
That certainly was an experience. I truly didn't hate it: it had a lot of solid rhythms and beats, and the (excessively) experimental instrumentation made this worthwhile, though I wouldn't place it among the clouds. It deserves better than to be below Kid Rock, for sure.
The drums in the opening track shouldn't slap this hard 😭. A bunch of interesting industrial sounds set to atmospheric tunes, like German Velvet Underground. I thought I would hate this album given it's the second-worst rated, but I can kinda see the vision. I only see it cause I was playing some Roblox games, and it fit the sound almost perfectly.
It’s like a cross between Suicide and the Birthday Party but in German. Proto-Rammstein. They definitely put the industry in industrial with the use of actual power tools on some tracks. Can’t say I will ever go searching this out but it was interesting. 3/5
It's wild that this is from 1981. I love the line from this through to 90s industrial, which I actually love. It's a little too discordant for me to want to put on regularly but I respect the artistry
I thought this wasn't that baaaad and I think I like noise music, because I enjoy My Bloody Valentine and yadda yadda, yadda, but that feeling was only for the first song... THEN the second song of the album came on and holy hell, that was so bloody loud! I mean I had done a little research on these guys and knew they are infamous for the atrocious amounts of noise they've made via home-made instruments - which sounds like a combination of a screwdriver and a vacuum cleaner, so I'm honestly not sure what I was expecting to be different. And they manage never let up the noise after the second song, so I nervously kept my volume at a low-to-moderate range so I don't get hearing damage.
I like a lot of industrial but prefer stuff that leans a bit more EDM. Examples would include Cabaret Voltaire and Front 242. This leans more towards noise, which is not as enjoyable for me. Good inclusion on the 1001 in terms of variety and exposure... certainly everyone should listen to a few industrial albums to see if they like it. Mass market industrial like Nine Inch Nails is good too. I'm a big fan of Ministry, for those who want something harder... but as I mentioned, this veers too close to noise for me to really enjoy it.
I didn't hate it. Obviously not an easy listen, but I think it's superior to a lot of boring stuff on this list.
This record is a noise record. I didn't get into it on first listen, but I didn't have much desire to listen again. I'll check it out again later to see if it opens for me, but right now, nothing struck me as something I'd like to listen to regularly. Admittedly, I didn't listen very closely, so I may be missing out. We'll see. Three stars.
This was fucking intense. Generally b Not into what I'd consider an "art" album but this sounded like the soundscape in hell. The fact that it was 1981 and they were improvising with random objects and tools to create this abrasive sounds is innovative.
most of this felt like I was just immersing myself into the tonal intricacies of my neighborhood construction zone, but I appreciate what was trying to be done here with industrial "rock". I actually liked the title track.
I'm not pretentious enough to pretend that this is something I'd regularly listen to, but I found it much more interesting and engaging than I expected given everything else. It's like the backing tracks on a Tom Waits album. Title track was actually dope as hell. There's more interesting in this album than in plenty of much more listenable albums, which makes this kinda hard to rate. Was gonna take off some points for how long it is, but looking it up, it looks like the original release is shorter. Still don't think I can get to four, so three is where it lands.
I came in fully aware that this was going to be German industrial experimental noise that is music in theory only. I came away fully aware that this was going to be German industrial experimental noise that is music in theory only - and while not good, I'd certainly say it is not bad.
Not at all who I was ever expecting to see on this list. Was familiar with, and this album sounded what I expected. I can listen to it sporadically, but I could never deep dive or listen to them endlessly, would probably never request it anywhere unless trying to troll someone. But as someone who really enjoys industrial music, I appreciate it and like it as background noise
I didn't hate this. Yes, it's unpleasant, but it's supposed to be. 2.5/5.0: Mixed
like asmr recorded at a german construction site. lots of beating and banging and some shouting in german. this isnt nearly as bad as people make it out to be. theres lot of tension created by the various sounds but underneath there is a steady mechanical groove that drives the songs forward. i will admit my view is influenced by the bonus tracks on the end of version i heard. the bonus tracks have a lot of similar ideas but are more akin to what to what someone would expect from an album of music. ultimately id rather listen to this over another boring post punk, folk, or britpop album by an artist no one has talked about in 40 years.
Not really into goth EDM but yeah it's pretty good
Intense industrial influences that make it a good listen
I don’t think I get it guys
Music for a vampire rave. Definitely "mood music" - gotta catch the vibe as it comes. But when it does, nothing scratches the itch like it. (It also stresses my cats out to play too much of it at once.) Formative for a beloved genre, but not one I revisit often.
dosta bolje od dosta albuma koje sam morao preslušat... sve u svemu zanimljivo, ima fora dijelova na početku, al postane istrošeno i naporno u drugoj polovici. ipak zaslužilo trojku, a ne ovako užasne ocjene
Well at least not as ??????? as duckstab

Ok
Quite on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to the smooth jazzy soul by Sade that was on the list before this. This is brutal stuff. Sounds like back alley junkie version of Kraftwerk where machines are replaced by tools and metal cans. This is bit heavy album to listen to, but undoubtedly would have been an great live experience when it was released. I've seen Neubauten live couple of times in the later years and edges are bit softer nowdays, but the spirit of doing things the neubauten way are still there. Some stars for the music on this album and some for the general respect for this band
Actually found this quite fun. It's not especially... musical but entertainment is worth something
There were some very great diamonds in the (very) rough on this album. It would be very hard for me to go back to it, but I loved having something different on the list
was not expecting to have an industrial / noise album on this list. honestly pretty damn good i was so confused at first but it grew on me quick. not saying it's amazing but there were some songs in there i really enjoyed. 6/10
I get why people hate it. I don't, but I don't love it either.
Like most couldn’t make it through the album But I did appreciate the few songs I tried out Loud abrasive and unapologetic….precursors to a lot of bands I liked in the 90s
I was really looking forward to this one, but I am kind of disappointed. I really wish they took it further and added more power tools. Most of the songs are just a single drum and a guy moaning. I was expecting super harsh noise with a jack hammer. This is definitely a unique and influential album, but it is kind of a boring listen. High 3.
Outstanding. But a bit much
I think I understand what they were trying to prove but I think they're wrong and I didn't really enjoy the argument much.
This should've been Cruelty Squad's soundtrack
78 - Kollaps (Einsturzende Neubuaten) *** I feel insane for rating this so high but the absurd amount of entertainment I got out of this has to be worth something. Sounding like something between your work foreman screaming at you on a drill site in Dresden (wouldn’t be the only reports of drilling in that city according to this website) and what you would get ordering a vinyl of The Downward Spiral off of Aliexpress. Kollaps’ usage of industrial sound to its rawest extent was for me, enjoyable experimental. Between all of the screaming and ‘instruments’ at play here there is what feels like an imitation or semblance of music amidst the sharp edges of it all, something which I think had to be an inspiration to some more traditionally informed but open-minded artists to work with (Pretty Hate Machine came out just shy of a decade after this). The chaos on display is not going to be something I’ll ever slot into a playlist any time soon, but it’s also something I can’t see myself forgetting about and certainly a welcome distraction from a lot of the downright boring and mediocre albums that paraded their way onto this list. Track #3 Negativ Nein was my favourite because it reminded me of the toilet music in Cruelty Squad
Wow nothing says industrial music quite like literal fucking construction equipment in my ears. Honest to God more albums just need to have LOUD AS FUCK POWER TOOLS interspersed in them (shoutout U-Haft-Muzak). These noises are included not for any particular reason other than to fuck with people like how Citizen Kane has that screaming parrot in it to wake up anyone who may have fallen asleep. One of the songs is literally called HEARING PAIN (LISTEN WITH PAIN) and it was the part of the album where I thought I was going to have a nosebleed. Shoutout to the scream at the end of Negativ Nein, that shit rocked. After listening to this: I get it, after so many nothing albums that elicited no reaction from me whatsoever, I get it. This is *something*. It is undeniably shit. This is an abandoned Salvation Army shop that was burned down. But in sifting through the charred wreckage, amongst the debris you can find some nifty things that you can take with you. That's exactly how I see this album. You can see this as the progenitor DNA for a lot of musical acts that came after it. It's not good music, and frankly it gets corny when it attempts to do something that is approaching listenable music. If I had heard this at 15 I would be playing this over voice chat on Garry's Mod. God bless this retarded album. I am conflicted in giving this a positive score though, it's influential and fucking hilarious but doesn't mean I will be giving this a spin regularly. I enjoyed this far more than Throbbing Gristle and Public Image Limited, maybe it's the Croatian half of me giving these guys a free pass for being German or it's my Serbian side that makes me a masochist. It does make me sad that I no longer have this to look forward to on this list anymore. It sat in the lowest rated section of this website like a portent of doom or more accurately like a cartoon anvil on a wire. Listening to this was objectively enjoyable but now that it's over what else is there to look forward to? Kid Rock? Everything else is small fry compared to these German psychos. I certainly won't forget this anytime soon, for better or worse. Highlights: Kollaps
As far as "challenging" albums go, this one has been my favorite. Not something I'd listen to casually, but I didn't hate it. It isn't comprised of chaotic melody like a lot of "experimental" music. In fact, most songs don't have melody at all.
a very interesting mixture of sounds. not for me though
I have 4 of their other albums, but not heard this one. It is mercifully shorter at 34 minutes, but I seem to remember some of the other albums have a bit more melody, or less visceral unpleasantness. This one is largely rhythmic, metallic banging with Germanic shouting. I've listened to a lot of experimental, industrial, and avant-garde music over the years, and I've gradually reached the opinion that most of it is unlistenable: more interesting to make or talk about than actually listen to. However, this record breaks down your willpower so much with the abrasive clanging and yelling, you end up being receptive to the slightest bit of rhythm and structure (like on the title track), and there *may* even be a well-conceived album structure here. It's also nice to hear an industrial album that truly sounds industrial, and doesn't appear to have any pseudo-fascist undercurrents like most of the genre. I'm feeling a respectable 3*.
This is a tricky one to rank. Music like this is good to listen to when you’re active doing something, anything, on a walk, workout, driving, cooking etc. But at rest it just feels like noise. Ideally you’d want to hear this in concert in a loud setting, and that definitely hurts the experience too, but you’ve got to at least be doing something active to enjoy it. I started off just listening at rest to this, laying down as I do most music, and I wasn’t feeling it, but for the other half I decided to test my usual above theory, listen while active, and it resonates a little stronger as a result. If you’re going to listen, do it while doing something productive.
I've had 2 horrible Adele album recently, and it's good to have something like Kollaps to balance the world. This isn't an album to file under easy listening. Best bits were the 'dub' sections where the band played around with polyrhythms and bleep bleeps. Yes, there is a lot of noise but I don't mind that at all.
Interesting rhythms in here--almost went 2 as I wouldn't pick up again. But the effort is pretty cool.
Certainly sounds like collapse, I’m reading a lot that this band belongs here but should have included a later, more accessible album of theirs instead, and that sounds pretty exciting to me. EDIT yeah coming back they have better stuff and I must bump down
Listened to before: No How do you even approach this album? I find it fascinating, but I don't enjoy it. Is enjoyment even what this album is about? Probably not. Do I get most of it by listening to it from start to finish? Now, that's a tiring experience. But taking songs out of it would tear it apart. Kollaps has a flow, a structure - even bringing in slight elements of melody towards the second half. Seeing EN live around that time must have been an exciting experience. My thoughts are unstructured. I don't think, I will listen to Kollaps a lot, mainly because I don't know how. But it is well worth beeing on this list, and I am glad that I gave it a try.
It took a couple of tracks to get over the shock and confusion, but I really appreciate what they did here. Idk if I could listen to this front to back in one sitting, but what I *do* want is to make techno music and sample this.
Oh, man. I know nothing about this aside from (maybe?) being one of the lowest rated albums on the list. Well, I liked Throbbing Gristle, so let’s see —- (Speak of the devil - a Throbbing Gristle song came on as the first autoplay at the end. I preferred it to this - it was actually really pleasant.) Because I was expecting the worst, this really wasn’t as unpleasant as I was fearing. Although it’s undeniably abrasive, I can usually find something interesting and atmospheric in this sort of industrial/noise music, and that holds true here. I was in a bad mood to start and I don’t think it improved upon finishing, so I can’t exactly give it a glowing review; still, I’m glad to have heard it once. I’m not trying to be contrarian when I say that something like this has a more justifiable position on the list than some generic psych rock or anything more than a single Elvis Costello album. Favorites: Kollaps, Abstieg and Zerfall
Infamously second lowest rated album on the list, but I don’t know if it’s deserving of that spot. The first half is obviously grating, chaotic, and abrasive, but the second half of industrial beats is actually really good and feels like a precursor to Aphex Twin. I’m sure in the “industrial” or “noise” genres there are certainly much much worse albums. I value novelty above most else when it comes to music, and honestly it’s impressive for an album to make me feel like I just got a root canal in an active construction site. Overall a 2.5 but bumping to 3 for giggles.
I don't know what this was
Not really something I want to listen to again but great production.
Interesting noises. Not something I need to listen to all the time. But some type of rhythmic background noises, that they made work. Impressive more for what they worked with than for the "music" this created.
I just had the most nerve racking 1 hour stroll around a quiet park in full sunshine and high temperatures. Definitely THE feel good summer album of 1981, inspiring countless generations to come that YOU TOO can become a musician - you just have to scrap some industrial tools and find remote metropolitan areas to smash things in.
It’s like early Nine Inch Nails but really raw. A bit edgy but a bit too eccentric.
Another testament to this website's affinity for hating anything unique. Pretty fine industrial stuff, they just seem to rely on the same sounds too much
Its quite uncomfortable in a way which I think is quite intentional. I think I could probably get more enjoyment if I understood what the dude was yelling, as it kind of adds a layer of further gibberish alongside the random noises and stuff. I do HIGHLY admire the total commitment to making a very interesting pallet of instrumentation. I think I hold this in the same regard as that Birthday Party album, where I totally see the vision, but it is just too abrasive (for the Birthday Party) and just too strange for this one. The use of delays on here is very interesting, and also seemingly some sampling. The industrial thing is quite interesting, seemingly quite a lot of these sounds were made weirdly, using sheets of metal or something. Arguably some of this is less technically 'music' than it is 'Art' as a whole, I suppose. All the ones which have 'dub' in them are my favourites, as they all have more coherent drum beats which I like. The dubs are incredibly ahead of their time, they sound like some IDM stuff which are still in pregnancy or something. Favourite songs: Tanz debil, Draussen ist feindlich, Kollaps, Abstieg & Zerfall, Sado-Masodub, Liebesdub, Spionagedub, Gastarbeiterdub, Rivieradub, Lünebest. Overall around 5/10
I imagine that in 1981 this would have been revolutionary and new. In the 2020s, it was tiresome for me. Some of it is humorous, but mostly tiresome. 3 out of 5 for being revolutionary and influential on later industrial artists.
I listened to the whole album. Like a train wreck, I just couldn’t look away. It was certainly different and unique. It is interesting to see how people play around with music and sound to create something new. And I honestly didn’t hate it. 3
It's not an album I would recommend as such. It's an experience, though, and as such highly recommended and something this list needs more of.
Definitely on the outer edge of the listenable. +1 for actual industrial noises. +1 for making their own instruments and incorporating found sounds. -1 for just yelling. +1 for offending people through destruction of property.
This album doesn’t deserve the basement ranking it has. It is not softly melodic, nor something I would reach for on my own, but it is unique and creative. One can hear how it influenced later artists of the industrial genre. I wouldn’t pass this off as entirely noise, and honestly it had a lot more to contribute than some of the trivial garbage I’ve gotten on this list.
I appreciate it as sound art, but it's not particularly musical. They certainly had a profound influence on industrial music. 3/5 #89
Not sure why this record is getting so much hate. It's not that bad. Avant-garde and a product of the early 80s industrial music. Similar to Skinny Puppy and Ministry. While I would not listen to this regularly, I'm still glad I heard it. I have heard way worse on this list and I am only 1/3 of the way through.
Ah the subtle sonnets of Einstürzende Neubauten. Soothing, calming, dare we say sleepy? The perfect album to fall asleep to.
Very unique album, I'm glad it exists and is on this list. Maybe not an everyday listen though.
bizarre and unique in a way that i can't help but find a little endearing, especially in the broader context of this list
Noisy, loud, chaotic, experimental, German. This is a wild one, but I appreciate music like this as it pushes the boundaries of what music can be defined as. I just came from listening to Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica", so this record kind of fit nicely into the sequence of disturbing albums that this project has coincidentally presented to me.
Listening to this very quietly in the background at work and am totally loving it. It’s what I need right now. Hope I never forget you, band whose name I won’t possibly remember!! (ntm. This cover reminds me of a Yaga shirt.)
Noise, but still pretty cool
Dang loving this. Partly familiar ground with the added twist of German krautrocktechindustenz. I totally get (for some reason) the hand-made metallic noise vibe. I mean who doesn't like whacking on shit to a rhythm track? While screeching.
Haven't been able to make it through. There's a time and place
Fascinating and somewhat entertaining. Great to hear some of the history of industrial rock, which I have long been a fan of. Not such a fan that I feel I need to hear the album again. 3/5

I imagine this is pretty low ranked, while it was a challenging listen at times, I think it makes sense in context of this list. I feel like I can trace this album through to bands I like (Liars comes to mind), and so it was a good one-off listen.
2.75 Love the sound of trash rolling down a hill.
I was pretty excited when this came up because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Most of this project has been either listening to albums I already know with a more critical ear, or discovering new albums I've missed. But every once in a while, with an album like this, I simply try to understand it, with no pressure to enjoy it. What they did here is certainly not enjoyable, but I will say, they succeeded in what they set out to accomplish. Taking a bunch of non-musical sounds and making them at least marginally musical. For that, I'll give it a 3. I will never listen to this again, but if anything, I am thankful for this being in my brain, because I'm a big Metallica fan and now the snare sound in St. Anger is a little more tolerable.
Oof. Hard work. Not immediately approachable. It sounds like a dystopian punk band playing with the detritus of civilisation years after a war zone. It's a shocker. I would never have heard of this outside of the 1001. Is it good? Dunno... Would I listen to it again ? Unlikely. Am I a better human being for having listens to and felt it's expression of existence? Yes. Do I give it 5 stars, no way, not in a link for. 3 for novelty and fascination that this exists and that there are fans of this. Barely. Barely.
This was not actually that bad! I went in knowing it was the lowest rated album on the list, so my expectations were tempered, but I kind of liked it! I wouldn't like go to a live show or something, and I'm definitely not going to be buying this to listen to on the regular, but I thought the sound was an interesting experiment. I like it when people use non-traditional instruments like this. I absolutely did know when the album ended though because the next song that played on my Spotify had a legit guitar and I was like "oh, guess Kollaps is done". This feels more like a performance art piece than music.
I’m not saying this is good or pleasant to listen to. But it’s not the worst. Arguably one of the more important records. It inspired whole genres of music.
Éclectique, bruyant, irritant. Le pur esprit punk.
Háát ezz érdekessss.
Definitely experimental and grating at times but overall quite a cool album.
first listen this was super interesting and also super unpleasant
It's different certainly. And, to be honest, I'd rather be given the chance to listen to this than another fucking Coldplay album. Or fucking Rumours. Will I listen to it frequently? No, probably not. Am I glad I listened to it? Yes, sure. At least it has some balls.
German experimental rock noize. Definitely see these guy's fingerprints all over outfits like The Blueman Group.
Can’t say I’ll listen to this again soon, but it’s interesting enough that I’ll be thinking about it for a good while, I don’t think this should be the lowest rated album tbh
They are unique, out of this world, and apparently their live performances were phenomenal. I'm happy that I knew them before I started listening, otherwise you don't know what's coming to you. For their legacy and uniqueness, I would give them 4 stars, but this is the most unsettling album I have ever listened to and I don't think I would ever want to listen to it again, so 1 star off for me.
A hearty combination of Kraut and STOMP the Broadway phenomenon, this album definitely is ultimately more of an art piece both in sound and instrumentation. I love the fact that they're making instruments out of scraps and banging random nonsense. Perhaps a precursor to the German techno scene with its' consistent patterns and drum focus 2.5/5
Dosta mi je bez veze ovo s obzirom na kasnije
Kollaps is the first official LP by Einstürzende Neubauten, originally released in 1981. This is some OG industrial music. In-your-face and relentless. At times it sounds like a straight-up construction site. I still think this is a very engaging listen, at least for me. It's super out there for 1981. I mean, it's even out there for 2024. I always respect when artists go for their vision no matter how crazy it may seem. Although most of the tracks are pretty inaccessible, I thought some of the bonus tracks were a bit easier on the ear. Specifically the dub tracks, which were a lot more structured. I also looked up the original LP because I was curious and the back cover photo is super sick. It features the whole band with their arsenal of instruments (many of which are straight-up power tools like a jackhammer). The photo reminds me a lot of the one Pink Floyd used for the back cover of "UmmaGumma" and it just looks super dope.
I can picture a Simpsons joke where Homer forms a rock band that screams German lyrics into a microphone while Barney beats on steel trash can lids and radiators. Why is this so compelling? Why did it make me laugh? Why ask why? From a critical point of view, it reminded me a lot of Throbbing Gristle. I kinda liked that too - quite contrary to the mainstream.
It's like hunting an elk but having no way to butcher it — it's massive, raw, and difficult to digest.
While it’s a lot to take in at one sitting it’s also aurally interesting and I never found it boring or fatiguing.
Hmm, tough listen for sure. But there's something here I don't hate. I know about them a little from the documentary Desolation Center which was really good, and I think they'd be awesome to see live. It's raw, which I like, but it can be grating at a times. I really do think I listen to parts of this again though.
It's hard work, but interesting, and a couple of good songs
Didn't really feel like music. Just sounds to disassociate to. Interesting to experience once, but I'm not coming back to this.
While groundbreaking/important, not really the most enjoyable listen. I do actually enjoy their later, more "musical" output!
I give this album credit more for the concept of the band than the actual recording. It's fun to try and figure out what types of mechanisms are making the noises that go into this, but it's not necessarily great to listen to. EN strikes me as more of a performance art band than one dedicated purely to making music, so it makes sense that a recording of them falls short.
1000 days of learning German:
2.75
This came so close to being my first hard pass on the list. Two and a half songs in I had to switch it off. I came back to it and managed to listen to it all in stages. I won't be listening to it again but I can see why it's on the list so on that basis will give it a neutral 3 stars.
Kinda weird but very groovy.
This album is definitely hard to get into. A lot of harsh sounds that give you the heeby-jeebies and hurt your ears. But I have a fondness for the Serge Gainesbourg song J’Taime and this album includes an interesting cover. And then the next song was Kollaps, which I actually enjoyed. Liebesdub and Spionagedub were good too. On the challenging 1001 albums scale, it’s better than Throbbing Gristle / Third Report and less good than Robert Wyatt / Rock Bottom. I’m not sure I’ll listen to it again but also I’m not sure I’d not listen to it again.
This is for someone out there who isn’t me.
Fed! Altså det var noget komplet rod, men på en måde der virkede ret godt for mig!
I'm not sure if it's because I have German ancestry, anarchistic tendencies, or a few screws loose, but I found Kollaps to be one of the more fascinating listening experiences provided by this list.
Curious as hell. Didn’t always stick though.
With all the bad reviews was expecting a sonic assault. Instead it was background music while answering emails.
Da fuq
I’m honestly at a 3. Look, it’s very clear to me that this is not “music” in the traditional sense at all, and to categorize this as industrial music ala Nine Inch Nails or Slipknot or the rest is the equivalent of calling the first Gramophone recordings a podcast and then being offended when you can’t understand anything. It’s a narrative album, and it just happens to be a very loud and very bold one, with really ballsy choices for 1981 and the understanding of “music” as we both knew it then and as we know it today. Does that mean it’s one of the 1001 albums you should listen to before you die? No, not by a long shot. Does that mean I’m mad I listened to it? No, not really. I’m honestly impressed by what’s here – yes, the first few tracks are loud as hell, and the choice to drill directly in my face while yelling at me is about as dejected as I’ve ever felt in this album experience… but then I just sort of got over it and it started to click. Seriously – I did end up liking this. It’s not an album you add to a playlist, not by a fucking long shot, but it is sort of a journey in sound and a genuine attempt at a story, I think. I have no idea what the story is because of my stubbornness to look it up and the language barrier, but I think it’s genuinely effectively communicated through the soundscape alone. I knew the English titles of these tracks because they’re listed on Wikipedia, so that gave me some level of context to work with, but besides that, this was all up to the soundscape to tell those stories, and I really think it worked. It’s not that good of an album by any means, but for my money’s worth, it’s a genuinely enjoyable listen, if a bit awkward and uncomfortable, but I think it’s supposed to be. I don’t think it’s worthy of being the worst album by ranking on the site – it’s disingenuous and an overreaction from people who gave up after the first few tracks. For me, it’s enjoyable enough to earn a 3. This is probably a miracle, and a little bit of a pity bump up from a 2.5, but I don’t care – I did like it.
Enjoyed
This album does some interesting things but also doesn't really go anywhere and becomes a little boring at parts
oooo
maybe not hitting my playlist everyday, but some really good stuff. the serge gainsbourg cover Jet'm shows some humor, which is always endearing.
Hm. I feel like I'm pretty tolerant of industrial/experimental music, and really enjoyed being introduced to Laibach through this collection, but this is pretty hard to enjoy and/or appreciate. I'm not sure if it's the thin/tinny sound of the mixing/production, or the fact that everything's in a foreign language, but much of the album felt like a lot of grating noise rather than songs per se. I'll give them credit, though, for creating most of the sounds and instruments themselves, and for the range of their noise-making. Most of the time I was listening to the album I felt like I had the soundtrack to an experimental stop-motion animated movie ("Mad God" comes to mind). (And to be fair, I only listened to the original album's 13 songs; I didn't have the patience or fortitude to continue on with the additional cd reissue tracks.) It's hard to know whether to rate this as two or three stars, honestly. I didn't enjoy it enough (or really at all) to feel like it's three-stars-worthy, but it feels wrong to give an album two stars when it's clear that they knew what they were doing and had a concept going, however annoying this is to me. Kudos to them for succeeding in their avowed goal of creating "the most unlistenable album ever" (according to the 1001-albums book)!
I can't say I really enjoyed this but I also didn't mind it either. It's sounds like a bunch of Germans went into a hardware store and made some instruments and then started screaming and yelling while playing them. They do sound better than my description--at least they don't have the nauseating repetition of industrial music.
I do love Einstürzende Neubauten, and this album is fine, but I’m not quite sure this album belongs on this list, although it is sort of understandable from an angle of “this one thing was a trailblazer to do a certain thing a certain way”. Their album Tabula Rasa is my favorite of theirs, it keeps a delightful balance of chaos/noise and structure/harmony, and in my opinion a better choice for this list. I saw them in concert in 2004 or so and that was a great and memorable show.
Interesting. Strangely hypnotic! Punk music with hand tools.
some pretty good early industrial
A mind bending effort using a unique approach to their craft. All and all though not within my wheelhouse.
50% the absolute origins of modern dance music, 50% utterly unlistenable Teutonic screaming.
Super industrial, sharp, tense
Áhugavert kaos. Ýmislegt í hljóðheiminum sem minnir mig á fyrstu Depeche Mode plöturnar. En meira kaos. Miklu meira kaos. Áhugavert.
Not so bad
Not bad but longer than I could listen to in one sitting. Not really my thing.
At the time of writing this, this is the lowest rated album on this website. I completely understand why that is the case, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy this German freak music.
Schizo posting music
3.75
Very odd, avant garde music, largely consisting of an angry-sounding German man shouting over various semi-industrial noises. I was strangely fascinated, but ultimately disappointed - I was expecting Krautrock and didn't get it. There's a very funny rework of Je t'aime (moi non plus) though, called Jet'm.
Not AS bad as the reviews made it out to be. But that doesn’t make it any less ear grating and nonsensical. But isn’t that kind of the point? Whatever man, I don’t know.
I like the industrial genre and wanted to like this particular album more than I did.
Realistically I'm never going to listen to this again but it's still interesting, I'd have this over 10 britpop albums
As industrial as it get, it doesn't lie. musing to get an album in german
Truly industrial punk I don't understand, but in the right mood this would work.
Album go brrrrrrrrrrrrr
I don't think this is the worst album in the book; found its experimentation quite compelling. Wouldn't say I loved it but I respect it and thought that it was successful in what it set out to do
Some interesting stuff in here. U-Haft-Muzak is a bit too distressing. I maybe like Rohrbombe the best. But then I also liked that all conga album the generator gave me a while ago. The dubs were definitely the fun part of the album. Except Gastarbeiterdub. Made for a long hour of listening but no quibbles with the album being on this list. I'm not sorry to have heard it.
I really don’t know what to make of this. The first half was just shouty, the second half was more listenable. I can definitely where the ‘industrial’ name comes from. It would have been more interesting to see this live, kind of permanence. And I like the idea of constructing instruments from bits and pieces
Sehr gut! Nice to listen to something interesting for a change & recognize the influence to a lot of music I enjoy
Always enjoy these interesting industrial noise albums to a certain extent. This one can be added to the pile of glad I listened but won’t be rushing back.
Thoughts while listening - currently on track 4 - U-Haft-Muzak of Kollaps by Einsturzende Neubauten...Maybe its the 6:30am listening time (usual time to listen to my album of the day) or maybe its the Mtn Dew I just cracked but I have an overwhelming feeling of anxiousness. I am pretty positive its the music. I'm not an industrial noise fan and...well...these guys are. I will endure. After thoughts - wow. I can see why these guys would be influential in this genre. I do not need to listen to it again but this full album was bone chilling. I've never felt that way while listening to any music. Abrasive, tingy, annoying, loud, off beat... all of those types of things - but a single once through is needed to understand their influence.
Hated it at first, grew on me over time. Probably won’t listen to this again.
Dissonant industrial/noise. Started off extremely harsh, got gentler as it went along. Second half of the album was almost entirely absent of vocals.
jednostavno ti mora pasati, da želiš ovako industrijsku glazbu, meni je dobro, a može i bolje
Hahaha, brilliant
Leave it to Dadaists in Berlin to come up with Industrial. Does this qualify as lo-fi? Steh auf Berlin got me tuned in and paying attention. Jet-m gets a mention for having something resembling a melody. Helga gets honorable mention for being a short clip that sounds like a radio followed by more than half of the song being silent.
Super interesting. Like NIN meets the Ramones. Liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Still a 3.
I can't tell if German makes this album better or worse. Part of me wants to know what they're saying but the other part of me knows it's probably like 'the recycling bin is full again" or "grape jelly and sledge hammers go boom". Now that I think about it, the German (and muffled screams) adds authenticity to the experience. What was I thinking? Everyone knows true noise rock has to be in German (duh). Also, sorry Sonic Youth. German is the key here. Throbbing Gristle was truly terrible but that's only because it was in English. I gotta say that I like the shift and having this album here. It's not something I'd listen to, but it was more interesting than some of the others. Bee Gees, I'm talking to you.
I get why this record is so low rated. And it's really not very good. However. It came out in 1981, and didn't use computers. This thing is so far ahead of it's time that it had zero chance at being "good" in the traditional sense. It could use some melody. But otherwise, this is a great piece of history.

Innovative, but probably best heard live.
Very industrial, but honestly not as bad as I expected
I find it odd that people hate industrial music so much but have no problem with verified assholes ranting and raving about bitches, money, and drugs. I'd take German experimental industrial music any day over that.
A bit different than what I normally listen to.
Definitely different, which I like. Early industrial I guess, but not wholly my thing.
Amongst the most daring and anarchist offerings in industrial and punk, Kollaps remains the standard bearer for not just Einstürzende Neubauten but for their genre in general. Over forty years on, it still beguiles, bemuses and embolds the listener to make their own opinions on what's being beaten over their ears. Not the first best introduction to industrial music but it is very important nonetheless. Favorites: Tanz Debil, Steh auf Berlin, Negativ Nein, U-Haft-Muzak, Jet'm, Kollaps, Sehnsucht, Vorm Krieg, Abstieg and Zerfall, Schiess Euch Ins Blut, Rohrbombe, Sado-Masodub.
interesting sound for that genre. I liked it!
Interesting but not music I want to listen to very often. I grew up a fan of Nine Inch Nails, so it was interesting to read about the influence of this group on the creation of Reznor's style!
500th album! Crazy German noise/industrial music. Literal sounds of power tools and explosions and stuff smashing together. This one was challenging for sure. Not something I'd seek out to listen to but I did find it interesting. It's sitting somewhere between a 2 and 3 for me but I'll round up
I feel like whether or not you enjoy this is really predicated on how much Quake you played in the early 1990s
This was very interesting. Sometimes weird sometimes very odd. Never boring.
Generally I prefer organized sound to this primitive noise. But after suffering through ear bleed for the first few songs, I started to appreciate it. This is unlike anything I have ever heard before. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely not. But will it stick with me for a long time? Yes
for mange rare lyder
First reaction was being wide-eyed and uttering "woah". Industrial Stockhausen. That "drum" beat is crazy cool on the 1st track. Other tracks with that "drilling" sound definitely is a bit much for me, not one I wanna hear (I should go to the Dentist soon tbh). Definitely experimental, but I love when this stuff pops up on 1001. I was working against the clock trying to get some client work done before the meeting so this was quite perfect for the mood. Lots of the random noises/electronic bits are lots of things I'd make but then go "ok, I can never use this though... but it kinda sounds cool". These folks just went and did it. Inclusion of guitar was a good call to ground things a bit. I respect it a lot honestly, I fully understand why someone would rate it a 1. I have to be in the right mood as well to listen to this, but I am glad things like this are on the list. I do wish it were a bit more focused though, it could be 35-40 minutes in total I'd imagine. Drop perhaps 1/3rd of the tracks. Kid Rock is worse.
I lack the mental model to adequately appreciate industrial music like this. Really good music can give you chills. The use of feedback, dissonance, and strange timbre also gives me chills. It’s more similar to chills from nails on a chalkboard though, but not in a bad way? I doubt that this is the level that Einstürzende Neubauten wanted me to appreciate the music on. But in terms of magnitude of physiological response, it’s way up there. A little long though.
i’m interested in industrial generally but this felt a bit lackluster? like there’s something interesting here, but i just can’t get at it. giving it a default 3 because i dont think i understand it
As with them it goes.
I don’t get the hate. Definitely not worth the lowest rating on the site.
Ok
Interesting
So this album is clearly somewhat unpopular here, given it is currently the lowest rated album on the site. I listened to it three times. I feel like the more I listened to it the more I grew to like it. Its obviously a very rough around the edges kind of album and very raw. The production is harsh and the instrumentation is grating. The vocals are filled with a strange, intense raw kind of passion. That is the highlight of the album for me. Though I have no idea what the singer is talking about, it feels relatable when going through pain (not sure if that's a good thing or not). I don't think this album is that bad, although obviously not for everyone. FAVORITE SONGS - Kollaps 3.5/5
"all this modern music is boom bang-a-bang noise" - my dad, 1981
the sound design of this really swung for the fences, bringing in a lot of found objects, literal industrial machinery etc, which did admittedly grate at times (grew up next to neighbors that liked to bring out leaf blowers at 7AM, fuck off suburbs). idk, this definitely wasn't my favorite thing by a long shot, but the rest of you goons deciding this is your literal collective least favorite thing in the archive is really uncalled for, considering some of the dreck that's in this list.
Hey kids, ever wonder why the call it industrial music? Man, this album is brutal. I enjoyed some of it as a one-time listen, but I couldn’t see myself playing it often, except perhaps to drive out houseguest that I think have stayed too long. This is more noise-focused and percussive than the industrial music that I am a fan of, but I can hear this band’s influence in a lot of the music that I love. The percussive rhythm of the first track, “Tanz Debil”, made me think of the guitar in King Crimson’s “Larks’ Tongues in Apsic Pt II”. I see that this band is still around and am actually curious to hear how their sound has changed since 1981. As easy as it is to dismiss this as just useless noise, it is experimental music like this that keeps music fresh and motivates new generations of musicians to add certain sounds to their own. I give it a 3 just for sounding like nothing else in 1981.
Didn't excite me. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood...
Very much not my thing but nonetheless interesting
i mean i still have a fondness for unbridled creativity but in retrospect so much of the "avant-garde" is just one ugly thing after another
Actually kinda vibed with this one. My receptiveness would definitely depend on my mood at the time, but yesterday I was in the zone for something a little different and this delivered. Interesting to see the raw, unfiltered emergence of some industrial textures that still define the genre today and listen to some semi-improvisational discovery along the way. Not every experiment lands, but kudos to these guys for pushing the envelope a little.
This took an extra day for me to get through. It wasn't because I found it too difficult to listen to...I just found it too difficult to find an appropriate place in my day to listen. I thought about listening while doing some home remodel demo, but I was afraid that it might all just blend together with the demo sounds. Later, as I tried to listen, I found myself nodding off, so I guess I found it somewhat soothing... It was interesting (when I made it through while awake) at the very least!
Cold, harsh and anxiety inducing. Don’t think I’d listen again soon but deffo an experience. Would deffo listen over U2
To be fair, you do need an incredibly high IQ to understand the nuance and depth to this album
Well.i got more feeling from this than i dod the stevie wonder i had yesterday... but equally, it was a hard listen. Quite a tricky one to rate.
Listened before? N What a wild album! For being such an early industrial work, it sure is more complex and layered than most modern industrial stuff (which seems to just be metal for people who can't play string instruments). It ranges from songs that are a few seconds long, to the monster 8-minutes Kollaps. What a roller coaster. An absolute pioneer in their field. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Sado-Masodub
It was awful.
3/10
girl shut up..
Certainly deserves a place within the project, and I understand why this is rated so low in the global averages (second lowest). I didn’t particularly enjoy this album but I’ve liked others less, still… overall 1.75/5
Fair play, this album does at least feel different, interesting, and actually one which I should have listened to. It's not really my cup of tea, I find noises for the sake of noises annoying, but I can at least see why in 1981 this would have been groundbreaking. Still, not great in my opinion.
2-
Ça n’a pas du tout sa place ici à mon sens En revanche, ça doit être top dans le cadre une performance artistique (exposition, théâtre, comédie musicale…) La reprise « je tm » m’a fait rire
Great if you want a headache. Weirdly enjoyed parts of it though. Respect the creativity
You know what I’m glad this exists. Im glad there are people on this planet that made an actual song out of the sounds of jackhammers and hammer drills. I’m just really sorry for the people that love it.
I wouldn’t listen to this on the regular. But you gotta appreciate the effort.
Look, it really is Germans shouting loudly over the sounds of heavy machinery. It's not very good. Somehow they made it work, and it sure is creative..just it working isn't very good.
There have been worse albums on here, which are just a pure assault of noise, and which have been deeply unpleasant to listen to. This one kind of makes me laugh at how random and mad it is, so at least there’s that. Parts of it sound like it should be in a 70’s sci-fi horror film, like Invasion of the Body Snatchers or something. But yeah.. it is a fair old slog. I didn’t listen to the whole thing, I got the idea. 1.5 rounded up for the lolz.
Was dreading this when it popped up but actually slightly better than I thought it was going to be. Not for the faint hearted though, and I struggled to do the 23 songs and 55 minutes of it in one sitting. Not one I will be returning to any time soon.
this is one of the worst rated albums in this collection, noisy and quite german industrial music. the book describes it as "radical and extreme" and the album "declared a war on every conventional way of listening". so i knew i was in for a treat even before pressing play. i have to be honest, the metal slaps and hits, all the recorded sounds of tools and everything honestly make for a cool sound by itself. a lot of the tracks are kinda nails on a chalkboard though, and the vocals are grating and commanding as well. it's absolutely not something you'd turn on casually. i give it a two stars if only for its creativity. i've heard better, a lot better, but i've definitely heard worse.
I'll rate this 2 stars due to its obvious influence on later bands like Nine Inch Nails, but I really can't listen to this because it gives me a headache. It sounds like a guy banging on a garbage can and shouting, interspersed with sounds of different machinery.
Kind of fun but exactly what you’d expect. Drags on a bit.
Sado-Masodub - но он однотипный слишком ластовый тоже норм Несмотря на всю оригинальность альбом дотстаочно однотипный, даже до уровня габберов этот альбом не дотянул как по мне за экспириентс поставлю 2 звезды
Meh. It's not as bad as I thought it would be but I'd also never like to hear it again. 2/5 No no, it's awful. At one point it sounded like diarrhea echoing off on of those cold, steel rest stop toilets.
Not my thing. It’s just noise
I'm not really sure how this got here but go nuts boys Will I listen to again: 1%
My dishwasher broke every single plate I own after this album finished and I didn't even realise, I assumed it was a bonus track.
ich mag es nicht, industrielle music ist nicht fur mich
This should be the new Home Depot theme song
This is very weird and experimental. Innovative, but musically a total fail.
Didn’t hate as much as most others. Interesting use of sounds
I can’t knock this album for being one of the worst albums on this list, like, I totally get it and understand WHY it’s so badly rated compared to everything else. There is merit to be found on this album - it’s not completely unlistenable but it’s not something for headphones - I listened to the bulk of it on stereos and that’s kinda the vibe and the musicality bouncing across the room with it. Never listening to it again tho
Good for what it was but too challenging to listen to. Ok background noise.
Huhhuh, aika hevii settii.
1.5
Difficult to rate. It obviously is very experimental, sometimes just noise. I am German so at least I understand what they're... yelling. Did it influence other bands? Anyway. Nothing I would listen to again.
album #38 okay so, i didn't actually hate this. it's got a clear idea of what it wants to be, though i must admit i'm not sure what that is. i think it's a unique list entry which is what i'm here for! i'm glad i heard this before i died. it did, at points, make me think i was going to shit myself though. industrial is the new brown noise? would i listen again? probably not. but i've heard worse, and it doesn't deserve to be rated as lowly as it is, especially when nico the nazi is on the list. ꩜ average track rating: 1.8/5 ꩜ favourite track(s): kollaps, negativ nein ꩜ least favourite track(s): u-haft-muzak, schmerzen hören ꩜ album rating: ★★☆☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,051 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 24 (+1 Kollaps) ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 9 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 29
Oh German boy, scream in my ear some more. Felt like I was entering a corrupted file or something which was quite interesting of an experience. The latter part of the album without the vocals particularly stuck with me positively, would probably listen to some parts of it again
While this wasn’t for me I can appreciate the skills and artistry it takes to make an album like this
I don’t really do well with “noise” or anything that is close to it. I’ll give it a 2 instead of a 1 because it seems influential.
Industrial? Idk
Is this what Germany sounds like?
what
много съм по странната музика, ама това ми е ту мъч
Wtf
So this is one of the worst rated albums on this. And I understand why. I like listening to music because I connect and create to the music or because the voice, instrumentals and production a good and nice to listen to. And this album didn't do any of it. However it was so different from what I expected and I had more fun listening to this than some other albums on this list because it was so different and I refreshing. In addition my ability to speak German might be the reason my experience is a little better than others because I know what they are saying.
It is for noise lovers.
This has an elements of things that I like, like strong beat and percussion, variety, creativity. But I am def not Berlin enough for this
Meh. Didn't care for this too much.
Well, that’s certainly a way to start a morning. This is the second worst-rated album on the whole list, and it’s easy to see why. This is a lot of industrial noises (power tools grinding on metal, sheet metal banging together, nails being used as drumsticks, etc) and literal shouting in German; very little of the vocals are not angry yelling. There’s not much actual music going on, at least in the traditional sense. There were one or two songs that had a coherent beat and rhythm to it, and if they leaned more into a softer experimental style like that, this could have gone somewhere. As it is now, this is just a ton of abrasive noise that you don’t need to listen to. The lowest of 2/5, just for the sheer gall to put something like this on wax, but make no mistake: this is NOT nice music.
#890. This is like some abstract art kind of shit. Like the musical equivalent of Jackson Pollock or something. I get it, I just don't like it. 2/5: they tried
Tanz Debil
It scared my dogs. Artistry is important and should exist.... doesn't mean I have to gravitate to it.
sorry, I'm sorry. I wanted to like it. maybe on more listens.
This was... not as bad as I was expecting -- and yet still pretty abrasive. Overall, this was a pretty burdensome listen. Maybe it'd be cathartic for others, I don't know. It was rough. The plusses: 1. The tracks without screaming were actually not too miserable, and to their credit, they did tend to maintain a steady beat on most of the tracks. 2. Influence: Henry Rollins has a Einstürzende Neubauten tattoo, so clearly I can quantify it, in some objective way that makes sense to me. Ergo, we can scrape by with a 2. Barely.
You know, I'm a pretty open minded guy. I listen to things like Merzbow on occasion, so I get the concept of Noise as a genre, but this was particularly grating. I thought this was going to be my first 1 star review, but after giving the album time to breathe I found a few pathways in and started to understand the point of view a little more. There's definitely some interesting ideas here, amidst the chaos and screams. One track reminded me a lot of the Velvet Underground. The version I found on Tidal included several "dub" tracks at the end, which I actually really enjoyed, but those weren't part of the origin album release so I won't include them in my review. I certainly wasn't prepared for this album, and it's not something I'm going to revisit (except maybe the dubs?) 2.5/5 from me.
not my vibe :)
This is a lot of noise but I did find myself leaning in at some points. Sado-Masodub is playing with sound a lot but at least pulling in into something with some structure. This isn't a blast to listen to but if you're going to listen to 1,001 albums to look at what music is, this is worth an hour of your time more than U2.
I was worried that this would all be haunting noise, but there is some music. Better than most stuff released by U2. Except maybe that song they did for Batman Forever.
This is not music. It's just a collection of random power tool sounds. Really taking the term "garage band" to the next level. Awarding one bonus star for creativity but man this one is a stinker.
Entertaining, didnt hate listening, would not listen again tho
This one is a strange one for me. On one hand it's not good. On the other it's actually something I might return to to explore more later. So it's a 2 on my scale, but also kind of a 4. But it's 100% not just the average 3. A lot of the tracks give me some almost ambiance vibes, even if that ambiance is a german factory or a hardware store being torn apart. The opening track reminded me a bit of 'Hell March' from the Red Alert soundtrack. When this project comes to an end I'll have forgotten more sixties psychedelic rock albums than I even know I've listened to. This one I'm sure I'll probably always remember - and no album in recent memory has caused this much talk in my group. I'd say that's worth something too... Standouts Tanz Debil Steh auf Berlin 2(4)/5
The nicest thing I can say about this album is that it definitely keeps you on your toes.
I have immense respect for this band and for Blixa Bargeld. They have released some of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to. This record is not an example of that. It's too experimental for me to be comfortable giving it a higher rating.
Too dross even more me
The best way to describe Einstürzende Neubauten debut, 'Kollaps', is essentially industrial music, but not the tuneful kind of Nine Inch Nails or Ministry, oh no, literal industrial sounds including power tools, tinny steel clangs, broken electronic sounds and random German wails from Blixa Bargeld and his band of noise terrorists. The sounds bounce off the walls in every direction, the band use whatever's available to them (metal plates, random drums, pots and pans amd countless other items) to bang out some semblance of a beat, and the guitars occupy a rather sparse space in the mix, eschewing chords in favour of eerie drones and squeals. 'Kollaps' is not an easy album to digest. In fact, many are going to hate its seemingly random soundscapes and uncomfortable atmosphere; however, these glitchy sounds are what would eventually become the building blocks for the industrial music scene as it developed throughout the 80s and achieved its height in the 90s. Is it going to be an album I'll listen to again? Probably not. But can I respect the impact it had on the development of the industral genre? Absolutely! Also, Bargeld joined The Birthday Party, and eventually Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, on the back of his work with Einstürzende Neubauten, so this album does deserve some semblance of credit where its due! Best songs: Not exactly sure if I can call the material on this record songs, they're soundscapes, and cathartic ones at that.
It's definitely something alright.
Feels like I am cast in a horror movie and this is the soundtrack
