Reviews (page 4 of 11)

What a sick album. Breaking the law is a perfect song. We all knew that but there's alot of other songs here too and they mostly rock. As a whole it's a little slow tempo wise for my hard rock/metal tastes but I almost didn't notice. Also the vocals are a bit too hair mentally bullshit I don't like but only a little. Guitars rip. And it just kills

The decline of British Steel was quite unfairly put on the shoulders of Houmous & Chutney. Apparently we delivered too much hope to the Sheffield community. Following our tour the locals got so enthused about their lives they refused to work in bad conditions. On the plus side, without the decline of British steel we never would have had The Full Monty. So…….4.1

Of all the big players in the NWOBHM, Priest were the one that passed me by. I didn’t hate the music, but the image was just a little too overblown for me (and how anyone was surprised when Rob Halford came out is amazing). Listening now, a few decades later, I can see why they were so big. It’s not quite my flavour of metal, but it’s a really good album. Happy today.

this was a fun listen! I've never actually checked out priest in full before, beyond the hits anyways. I'm not too much of a metalhead, I obviously know about British Steel's significance to the genre but now I actually know why it's as influential and every (thrash-)metal band that followed ripped it. there's some great riffs on here and the overall sound couldn't be more fitting. the songs build a cohesive unit, back to back, if I had to pick a favorite it'd probably be The Rage (or BTL, of course). Rapid Fire reminded me of Motorhead, which is always a good reference. although United and Living After Midnight sounded too cheesy for my taste, the rest of the songs are strong enough to compensate that, so it doesn't effect my opinion of the album too much, altogether.

Always like me some Judas!

Excellent metal album

Muy bueno

After a pretty unforgettable track in Rapid Fire I thought this one would be a disappointment. My brother was a huge metal head and I definitely recognized the singles when the album kicked in. The rest of the tracks are really good and I was happy to be surprised. Solid 4.

Tricky review for me because I mostly have listened to bands like Metallica or Black Sabbath who moreso followed the lead of Judas Priest. They're stuff is good and probably kicked ass at the time, but it doesn't quite compare to a Metallica, who took this genre to another stratosphere. That said, there were some really good songs here like Breaking The Law, Living After Midnight, and Steeler. But then you listen to a song like United and it just feels dull and dated. Out of respect, this gets a 4 though.

I never fully got into Priest when my friends went through their hair metal phase. I recognize a few on here and welcome this tour post-puberty. First thing that stands out are the vocals -- relative to other metal acts, Halford is in the upper echelon of technical capability. The man had pipes and a hell of a range. Rapid Fire opens us off with pretty much what I would expect for Priest. Maybe a little less flashy, but the production is extremely tight, there are some very tasty guitar riffs, and towards the end Halford gives a taste of his characteristic hair metal vocal range. Clean bleed into Metal Gods is a nice touch. I can get down with this one -- it has a nice pocketed groove that is really satisfying. Breaking the Law is a classic. Deserves all of its flowers. As far as metal tracks go it isn't in your face hardcore, but the ethos is foundational. Living After Midnight is fine in its own right, but doesn't hold the same weight IMO. The Rage is a new one to me, and probably my favorite of the album so far. Kind of a weird fusion piece that straddles Police-like influences with some gritty guitar work. Absolute jam. Short and sweet and more varied than I expected going in. This was an extremely solid metal album. High 4.

Liked it!

Been a while since I have listened to this album and I always forget how random it is for a Judas Priest album in my opinion. Some really out of place slower rock songs after the first 3 or 4 songs heavier metal songs. Still has some bangers like Breaking the Law. But i'd probably rank this third in the Judas Priest library for albums. This is on the lower side of 4

Really great would listen to again.

I honestly really like this. It's fun, not too edgy (but maybe that's because "Breakin the Law" has lost all meaning), sometimes anthemic.

Good stuff!

I'm not a heavy metal fan. But if you're going to do it, this is the way to do it. This album was actually kind of fun, and not every song sounded the same.

7.5/10 Favorite Tracks: Red White & Blue, Steeler, Rapid Fire Least Favorite: You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise, Living After Midnight, Grinder

Quaint but charming.

Good album, nice to hear metals roots

This is undeniably a quintessential metal album. Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight and United are all amazing and catchy especially for this typically uncatchy genre. And just when you think being an 80’s metal bass player was the easiest job in the world they throw in a song that isn’t straight 8th notes like The Rage. I enjoyed it. 4.5/5

Classic

7.5/10 Fave track: Breaking the law

I liked this more than I thought I would.

Great album! Right up my alley but one I've never listened to before. Not sure why Judas priest slipped through my listening arc. Will rectify that!

That was fun!

So did AC/DC sneak into the studio and record You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise? Some excellent 80s metal there. Some really punchy production on this that makes it both perfectly of its time and somehow timeless. The drums on Living After Midnight are so clean and forceful. The twin guitars are so good here too. The main issue I have is that it's too consistent for me to listen to it often. I'd mostly listen to a few songs from this and not the whole album. United kinda brings a break in the album to help with this but for me that songs is a skip. Highlight: Steeler

Surprisingly enjoyed this one

No private session used for Spotify. This album was big with cool kids in junior high, it was a let to metal and heavy for a Presbyterian boy like me, I stuck with my mellow Styx and Yes. Anyway, this is a good metal album.

Get me one of those Judas Priest shirts everyone on the planet already has!

Great album! Fun to listen to and just good rock music! This is the type of stuff I grew up adjacent to, and I never was really like a devoted fan but I liked them, them as I got older they were just yes awesome! This album makes me think of the awesome power of rock lol

An extremely tight and energetic album. That brand of classic hard rock is quite my jam, not gonna lie.

Badass metal album. Not gratuitous, killer cover, and songs that make you wanna run through walls. Enough imagery to be edgy but not too campy (impossible to completely avoid that in the genre). This one is the perfect balance between mainstream-sensible songs (Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight) and harder songs to bring you in deeper. Drags on a little long, could have taken a nod from the punks on length. Definitely an amp-up keeper.

Nada que decir. Mucho mejor de lo que esperaba. Grindr, y si. Nota: 3.8

Great album.

What a pleasant surprise. Definitely not a metal guy, but the melodies and songwriting are pretty incredible on this.

There’s something nice and comforting about British Metal from this era. Great album.

some headbangers and some buttwigglers

Old school British eavy metal. Rob Halford is a badass.

Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would

cool rock album

Þetta er gamaldagsrokk sem ég fíla og get hlustað á oft og mörgum sinnum. Einhverra hluta vegna nær Judas Priest samt aldrei að brjótast út úr lögunum sínum (pun intended) þannig að ég þekki þá aðallega í gegnum Breaking the Law og Living After Midnight. Hin eru samt alveg fín líka. Þarf að gefa þeim meiri séns.

Enjoyed the energy, some of the later songs in the album like Rage and Red White Blue were really good.

Classic Metal. Very good album

badass. the name of the game with British Steel is mid-tempo, meaty riffs with some tremendous hooks delivered by Rob Halford, one of metal's greatest melodic vocalists. in general, I like my metal a little speedier than what Judas Priest offers here, but the performances are just so great I didn't really mind. you can tell they were aiming for radio play with this one, but the things that make them a great band are still very much intact. this is the only Priest album on the 1001, so I'll have to revisit their other classics (and late-career masterstrokes) on my own time. decent 7/10.

I didn't know what to expect from this album. I'm not usually a fan of metal but I actually really enjoyed this.

I've never listened that much to Judas Priest. I was introduced to them by Beavis and Butthead. "Breaking the law! Breaking the law! Yeah. Yeah. Uh-huh-huh." I always thought the vocals were cheesy and it just sounded too much like the 80's to me. I was right. The music is cheesy, and it is very much rooted in the 80's. But, that's okay. I'm a pretty big metal fan and it's easy to see the influence Judas Priest had on the genre. As soon as I heard the bridge of "Rapid Fire," the second track on the album, I thought I was listening to "Motorbreath" by Metallica even though their album "Kill 'Em All" didn't come out til 1983. 4 stars for being pioneers of a musical genre that I love and because "Breaking The Law" is a straight up classic.

Some banging classics.

Day385 - a treat to listen to. seeing them inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame was awesome

good power

Fuck ja. Heerlijk. Een beetje fout, maar vooral heerlijk. Dit is de shit die je wilt luisteren als je je vierde Guinness bestelt. (enkel jammer dat ik dit beluister op een maandagochtend) 3.5

Great album, including the infamous "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight". 7/10

muy buen album, me encantó, rock en su clara definición, tiene unos solos de guitarra que fua, hacen volar, se siente un poco repetitivo pero eso no quiere decir que sea malo, tocará escucharlo más veces

I'm metal-curious and this hits the spot

It'd be breaking the law to go any lower!

voila... meer moet dat niet zijn... stevige rockers, goeie vocals, goeie muzikanten, trip down memory lane ook natuurlijk

Favorite Track: Grinder

Another band I should have gotten into, but never really did. At least it had two songs I know. The other songs are just as hard-rocking as "Breaking The Law" and "Living After Midnight". The song title "Grinder" seems to have a different connotation to it now, doesn't it? But seriously, this is definitely a b***s to the wall hard rocking album. I know it's supposed to be heavy metal, but it seems more rock when you compare it to the heavy metal that came out soon afterward. I think the only song I didn't really like was "Red White and Blue," and I did not hate it. It just was... okay. So I dug this album a lot, I would definitely listen to it again or other works of JP. It's probably at about a 4.25 for me, so 4 it is. Top tracks: "The Rage," "Living After Midnight," "Breaking The Law"

RAWK. Verges towards metal cheese (including the lyrics), but manages not to go too far over that edge. Great musicianship, Halford has pipes, and every track just rocks. Good stuff. Favorite tracks: Rapid Fire, Metal Gods, Living After Midnight.

Rating: 7.5/10 Overall very good, has some cringe songs but most of this is great.

I was surprised at how much I was jamming to this.

🤘🏼

This is lowk sweet asf

Ok ok we get it, you are breaking the law.

A very well produced metal album, hard, rude, aggressive and cool. Well played too.

Hear me out— the beginning of United (hilariously) sounds like the beginning of The Stroke. I’m sure you can imagine how excited I was when this album was revealed. I am a huge heavy metal fan, you know. But I didn’t hate it. This feels more classic rock than metal. For the most part, take the performative raspy rock voice out and I liked the music for what it is. The Rage was a standout for me. I liked the evolution throughout the song.

++: Breaking the Law, Rapid Fire, Metal Gods, United, Living After Midnight, You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise, The Rage, Steeler +: United 9,5/10

God damn, I wish I could give this album a 5 just because METAL. But I can't in good conscience. While there is undeniable catchiness to the songs that gets you going, the lyrics seem like a very watered down rebellion (TM). There's just a general anger that seemed to try to cater to as many different people as possible instead of just focusing on bringing a message. But it is still headbanging good metal.

It straddles a fine line between camp and punk, serious and kitschy. The sound on the standout hits is more dry than some of the others which feature nice uses of modulation. Consider this a low 4.

Album 616 of 1001 Judas Priest - British Steel (1980) Rating : 4 / 5 Metal isn't a go-to for me but I really like this album. Great overall sound. Awesome vocals, guitar riffs and even some melodies thrown in there. This is one band that I have came to enjoy more over the past year or so. Probably a favorite metal album.

Svinbra rakt igenom. Den utgåvan som finns på Spotify har två extra spår som ABSOLUT inte behövs.

8/10 Went in skeptical and came out with a new perspective Favourite Song=Red,White and Blue Least Favourite Song=Metal Gods

Breaking the law er all time classic metall.

Breaking the Law is a great anthem to play when committing minor crimes, like going out for a second walk during the Covid lockdowns Can’t say I loved any particular song, but everything was consistent and the album as whole came together nicely; good drums, decent riffs, nothing overstayed it’s welcome, can’t complain.

Was looking forward to this one. Haven't listened to Judas Priest before really, but keep seeing them headlining rock festivals in Spain. They seem to be really popular here. I enjoyed the album, nothing massively stood out but it was a solid album and I'll check out more Judas Priest.

I loved playing this loud while in my van at work; just wish it didn’t end so soon. Definitely gonna check out more from these guys!

Didn't like the flag shagging but that wasn't in the original release so I'm going to ignore it. They're like shit, but in a good, fun way.

This was interesting. I know Judas Priest as the "Painkiller" band from Rock Band, pretty much exclusively. I didn't know Living After Midnight or Breaking The Law were their songs! I had assumed Judas Priest was closer to Slayer than anything else, so this album was a solid surprise. Pretty good music overall, although to be honest I do like the more hardcore sound of Painkiller compared to this album.

No creí que me gustaría tanto un disco de este tipo

Breaking the Law… You know that JP sound.

Fun heavy metal album that is a classic.

I had a student last year who re-introduced me to Judas Priest. They always seemed a bit campy with their black leather and studs but listened with their perspective changed my mind. Coming off the acid rock era following the sludgy (but beloved) sounds of Black Sabbath and Rainbow, JP figured out a way of polishing this Metal and make it shine. It was fast, clean tone, precise in its execution. The interplay between Glenn Tipton and KK Downing on guitar was tight. Then throw in the masculine vocals of Rob Halford brought it all together. Living after Midnight and Breaking the Law (which I always hear Beavis &Butthead singing as “Walking the Dog”) are classics but I think my new favorite song on this album is Steeler. This album may not their best, but it’s a revolutionary jump in the speed metal world!

It's a fun album with some good tracks which is influential for it's time

Mostly walks the line between cheesy and fun expertly, with only a few exceptions (United I’m looking at you).

Classic ultimate rock album. Always a goodie. Solid 4 just because there are others I enjoy more.

Breaking the law was my favorite. Generally like this one

This album is so much fun - it's melodic and energetic. Rob Halford's voice is wonderful. Knowing he's a black-leather-trendsetting queer icon makes it even more enjoyable. Breaking the law breaking the law!

Not as heavy as I was expecting, more 'light and shade'.

this has been my first real surprise I never really gave this 'type of music' any thought, and to me, JP was Breaking the Law, their Behind the Music episode maybe, and Rob being a talking head on VH1 in the mid-00s But I thought this was awesome! I was delighted idk hell yeah Judas Priest

Vocals! 3.8.

This brought me back to high school. Personal Enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5

Rad metal album

Metally

absolutely insane production job for a niche genre in 1980...a level of clarity and expressiveness that would work well for just about any music played with a traditional guitar band setup. lots of room to appreciate the band's work here, which is vibrant and subtly diverse in terms of influence thruout...they can soar, they can chug, sometimes the rhythm section even has a little funk in it. releasing the same year as iron maiden's debut, its rly striking as The Shape Of Metal To Come, but also a short and sweet record of oiled-up rock music on its own...rly wanna fill in all my vast knowledge blanks of judas priests' evolution eventually!

Nice rock album :-)

Judas Priest really is seen as a founding metal band and has influenced many bands, from Iron Maiden to Anthrax. This is a solid album, however, I've never really cared for Rob Halford's voice. It's more subjective than anything. The band plays hard and tough, and the lineup here were at their peak in terms of delivering tough riffs with a couple of the best known songs in Living After Midnight and Breaking the Law. They'd go on to take this sound even further and perfect it on Screaming for Vengeance.

transition from rapid fire to metal gods pounded me like a battering ram

Great metal record I wasn't very familiar with. Solid sings and easy to listen to.

4/5 Great metal album. Some weak choruses and inconsistency in the tracklist stop it going higher. Rapid Fire 2.5/5 (LEAST FAV) Metal Gods 4.5/5 Breaking the Law 5/5 Grinder 5/5 United 2.5/5 You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise 4.5/5 Living After Midnight 3.5/5 The Rage 5/5 (FAV) Steeler 3.5/5

Wasn’t expecting to like this much. I was wrong.

Pretty good, love some good rock.

Great rock album. Starting feeling a little repetitive/samey after a while but I still enjoyed it.

Brittibändin heavy-metal -klassikko vuodelta 1980.

4 rips hard

Classic british heavy metal.

Enjoyed this a lot - I've never listened to much Priest but have a lot of respect for Rob Halford. I was a big Iron Maiden fan as a teenager, and this is very adjacent to some of their best work

Not the biggest fan of JP, but nevertheless a fuckin banger

Liked that, played it while training, not bad at all.

Hell yeah. Too bad about the perversions though...

Compared to what metal would become (even a few years later) this album is pretty tame. I consider it more hard rock than metal. There are some good songs, and there are some stinkers. 3.5 (rounding up because of how influential this album is)

A lot more fun than I expected and didn't realize some of these songs were by this band...

Classic British heavy metal. Simple really.

Metal Gods Breaking the Law Living After Midnight

Sounds stereotypical… probably because they defined the heavy metal sound. Wasn’t convinced at first but it grew on me 3.6

4 му давам само защото на 2 от песните съм си откачал главата, като тийнейджър иначе е за 3

This is the most Beavis and Butthead record ever.

Hell yeah

7/10 I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. some tracks were flavorless but I felt the beat on more than a few. 7-15-2024

Another band I've heard plenty about but never actually sat down and listened to. This is fun and chunky in the way that good metal often is; I wasn't surprised when I read that Judas Priest had been touring with AC/DC and adjusted their sound accordingly for this record. It does get a bit samey as it continues, a pitfall of its genre, but I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected and am now actually interested in Judas Priest. I hope Rob Halford is having a great day. Highlights: Metal Gods, Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight, The Rage

I might’ve been happy in the 80s

Classic British metal with some classic tunes

An absolute classic slice of British metal - I was always more of a maiden fan but you can see their influences are the same.

The music is still damned good. Some of the lyrics are preposterous. Still fun.

this is just a fun album, and no two ways about it. the combination of - to the 2025 sensibility - innocence and sincerity is almost quaint, especially when you consider that this would've been aggressive and heavy in its time, where for the most part, now it just sounds like sorta cheesy rock. i love it

Big. Just really, really big!

I wasn't too optimistic about this one, I prefer more of a Lemmy type growl to the the clean singing and high pitched tones you get from a vocalist like Rob Halford. But I have to admit, this album won me over. Living After Midnight is far from the high point of the album, though it is as renowned as Breaking the Law.

Felt like a short album, but in a good way, not to much or to little. Enjoyed it alot, great sound and all. Last song was a live performance but a strong last song.

Breaking the law. 4* A live version of a song -1* Ill be nice for once 1* I could have lived without hearing the album, but alot of good songs, so not gonna penalize that today. Result: 4*

Turn up the tempo, let's go! Classic trash metal at its roots. It almost feels like this album is a sort of precursor to what would later become power metal. Very bombastic sound that . And some of the tracks are almost anthemic like 'United''. The lyrics are quite silly at times, but they are delivered exactly how they needed to be for exactly this moment in time and to inspire all the future albums. 'Red White & Blue' feels out of place on the album Standouts: Breaking The Law Living After Midnight "Broke The Law"/5 (4/5)

I never realized that I like Judas Priest before, but this was a great album. It definitely helped set a template for heavy metal going forward. Hearing about Rob Halford's struggles with his identity and alcohol during this period definitely made it more interesting, but let's not dismiss the solid performances here.

Your good, ol' British 80s metal. Can't go wrong with it.

80s dad rock

This album ripped! Almost listened to it a second time as it played again right after and it was even more enjoyable. Only familiar with the singles but the deeper cuts were just as strong if not stronger. Will definitely revisit in the future.

I love Rob Halford's voice and know the band's major hits, but I had never listened to a full Judas Priest album before this. This is my kind of metal — hard hitting but still melodic. It's metal, so while there's variation in the songs, they definitely blend together a bit. But the pace is pretty relentless and moves quickly. What I like about this kind of metal is that even though the sound is heavy and some of the themes can be dark, it still has an upbeat feeling to it. It makes you want to move or drive fast, and because Halford is such an insane vocalist, belt along with him. Halford was/is a huge fan of Freddy Mercury, and there are definitely similarities to some of Queen's harder songs. There are times where the lyrics get a bit cheesy. And the weirdly patriotic songs "United" and "Red, White and Blue" are odd and a little cringe. Not a huge fan of those. But the album is overall really good, and it's hard to overstate how influential Judas Priest was (and is) to metal. 4/5 (probably a 4.5) - really good but not perfect

Solid riffs, several super popular songs that are still good despite overplay.

Grinder

It is a classic from the band that made leather lads metal.

Thoughts before listening: Judas Priest is a big deal in the metal world, but it I've never paid much attention other than their hits. I think this will be my first time listening to one of their albums all the way through. I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Review: Its always interesting to me how tame early metal sounds when compared to more modern bands. This is basically just faster paced rock n roll that bares little resemblance to the death metal and hardcore music of today. This is a good thing to my ears. Judas Priest songs have great riffs with catchy melodies, fast tempos, and a lead singer in Rob Halford that helped define a certain style of metal singer with his voice that can go from menacing to high pitched screech sometimes in the same song. This album contains a couple certified classics in "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight", as well as some deeper cuts I'm enjoying like "Rapid Fire", "Grinder", and "Steeler". Overall this is a very fun album that I'm glad that I had an excuse to listen to. 4-stars

One of the great albums from JP. unleashed in the east is IMO the pinnacle but in fairness this album isn't far off it.

1. meh/bra, 2. bra/banger, 3. bra, 4. banger, 5. meh, 6. meh, 7. meh, 8. banger, 9. bra, 10. lame Overall: 7

Battle Toads soundtrack. Favourite track: Breaking the Law.

I've heard a lot about these guys, but never really listened to them. They seem like legends in the metal scene. It says on Wikipedia that Metallica was likely influenced by this album which checks out. Lot of great shredding all over this thing. The vocals are a little too over-dramatic for my taste, but I can't help but respect them. Rob Halford sang his heart out. Overall, this rocks.

Never really listened to a Judas Priest album in its whole before. Enjoyable. I love how this metal band has the most wholesome and moral songs on its album... we stand united... you don't have to be old to be wise... lovely.

hell yeah gonna draw the anarchy a on my notebook and flip off the teacher could i write poetry to this? y

The hits from this album are true classics, no doubt about it. However, Judas Priest always seemed to me to be kinda...fake. Not necessarily posers, but there is definitely an element of cosplay in what they do. Nice guys pretending to be mean, violent, and angry dudes. Heck, "Red, White, and Blue" sounds like they are protesting the Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen" with a soaring, patriotic anthem. Four stars. Originally a three-star album, with a half-star for the Beavis and Butthead thing. Another half-star is added for Pride Month, which (as with the Madonna album) will be revoked in July.

I think Painkiller is actually Priest's best album (and I also might prefer Screaming for Vengeance and Stained Class, but I reserve the right to revise that opinion), but this album is still not only one of their best but one of the greatest Metal albums of all time.

usual music preference towards metal, classical, electronic, and rap. 6. Judas Priest - British Steel: I've heard Painkiller plenty of times but this is my first listen to British Steel. Love the solos, nice driving rhythm. 7/10.

Sparse yet striking riffs Support shout along anthems And wicked solos

Started out a bit ho-hum, but Breaking the Law got my attention and everything after that was able to hold it. I think I would have loved them in concert.

Listening in 2024 it sounds cliched and hack, but in the context of when this was released, it is a superb metal album. The solos are the highlight for me

Pretty rocking overall. Enjoying this. I was expecting more hair-band theatrics. This is more groove-based. I will revisit this, liked it a lot

You Don't Know What It's Like. Nota 7/10 29/05/2024

I'm more of a Screaming for Vengeance fan but British Steel is damn good.

Awesome old school metal. Classic

Classic metal foundations. Not my personal preference, but Hanford can sing. Definitely deserves a spot on this list, but not one I’m likely to listen to much again.

Not a bad song on this album. Punk influence engaged.

I am giving this a 4. For this music genre, I could understand the words and the songs were not negative. Vocalist is good with solid guitar and drums.

The guitar is very solid and it is very well built and structured throughout

I really enjoyed this which I was not expecting. They can play really well and don’t just rely on playing some boring riff or progression over and over again for an entire song. The lyrics were interesting and solid. It sounded a lot like Metallica which was cool with me cause I like Metallica. I think the fact I had just had to endure another Public Image album before this one made this sound even better.

This is a fun album. I love hearing how British metal evolves from the late 70s to early 80s. It's upbeat, heavy, melodic. I enjoyed it from start to finish and listened twice.

Judas Priest, another band just made for the MTV era when they played videos! Shoot, I can still see the videos for Breaking The Law and Living After Midnight in my head. Can't say I was ever a big fan of Priest, but I cam imagine their concerts were pretty entertaining. Shout out to Curt from High School who always seemed too have Priest on when he was working on his car. Me, Jim and Brian would hang out in his garage, smoke pot, watch him work on his car and most times there would be Priest cranking in the background. This album is pretty good from beginning to end. Again, not my cup of tea, but this was an enjoyable listen. Favorites included the opening tunes of Rapid Fire and Metal Gods. Also enjoyed Grinder. For those who are a fan of the early Motley Crue era, tell me you don't hear Knock em Dead Kid, from the Shout at the Devil album, in Grinder. Hear it? A quick side note, Album title is British Steel and Them Dirty Roses just released a new song called Birmingham Steel. Just though I'd throw that out there. Another album I can say I probably won't revisit, but enjoyed for the memories it stirred up. Hell, I think every time I do something not quite legal, I'm humming in my head, breaking the law, breaking the law. A good, fun listen. Good memories. Musically a 3 to 3.5, add the memories of early high school and Ill go with a 4 here. 4

4 The third 80s rock album we’ve had in the past week, and I was somewhat expecting this to be in the same vein, but holy cow, does Judas Priest blow Aerosmith and Def Leppard out of the water. I’ve never claimed to be the biggest fan of the group, but I was rocking my ass off here, to the point that I couldn’t point to a single unenjoyable moment if I tried. I was even prepared to give some shit to Living After Midnight, the most radio-friendly and overplayed track of the bunch, but I still ended up really enjoying it as I was listening - like it or not, you have to admit it fits really well within the context of this album. However, the highlight of this album far and away is the trio of Rapid Fire, Metal Gods, and Breaking the Law - what a hell of a way to open an album. Now, there IS one pretty corny track to be found here in Red, White & Blue, but thankfully, it’s not a part of the official release, and so I don’t have to factor it in my review. Patriotic or not, these guys are from the UK… what are they on about? A short but sweet blast of loud, high-speed rock - what more could you want out of an album? If you’re someone looking to write and perform heavy metal, the blueprint is right here. I actually had my review for this album finished and still chose to give it another listen at the gym - I mean, there wasn’t any way I was allowing Duke Ellington to be a gym listen and not Judas Priest. Also, a few days early, but what a good way to kick off pride month, with a rock icon we probably should have picked up as gay wayyy earlier (no disrespect meant, Rob Halford is a badass - fuck anyone who stopped listening because of it).

Pillar of the genre. Clean, heavy studio work. Good song craft. No real filler. One iconic classic in Breaking the Law. Rock the Hell on!🤘

Classic head banger metal album. You can hear all the hard rock bands this album has inspired

This was more enjoyable than I expected, not usually my type of music but it wasn’t as heavy as I’d thought it would be. Will probably revisit in the future.

Classic metal album. Loved it!

solid overall.

Still good but not as good as I remember.

Very good. The tracks that are going to stay in public memory (living after midnight) really exemplify what classic metal is. However, there are a couple of filler tracks that weigh down an otherwise perfect album (red white and blue)

Venga, un 4. Así soy de generosa, aunque no sea mi estilo.

3.8 - I really enjoyed this, nice foray into heavy metal. Didn't find it too bad, maybe it's gonna be a lovely journey

A great big steel plate of rock. A very appropriately titled album and a lot of fun. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Rapid Fire Date listened: 22/04/24

Guitar hero vibes. Love it

Pretty good, not my favourite album I've heard from them though, less consistent but still got some bangers

This is a very strong 4. I think it's a *bit* overrated in the sense that apart from the "big" songs like Breaking The Law or Living After Midnight, the songs are simply just good and nothing more, but it is still a very fun listen.

Good fun album with some classics on it.

Judas Priest’s British Steel is a huge swing album. On some songs, I feel bored, and uninterested in what the band has to offer, like Grinder and United. On others, im dialed in, and absolutely love the guitar and drums, like on You Don’t Have to Be Old to Be Wise. Some more of my favorites are Steeler and Breaking the Law. I just love the background sounds and, yes, maybe a bit of the yelling. All in all, British Steel is an good album. Best Song: You Don’t Have to Be Old to Be Wise Worst Song: Grinder

This album was badass as hell. Makes me wanna shoot aliens with a machine gun off a motorcycle. Favorite song was Breaking the Law. Added to my Spotify library.

I don't think the term "Grinder. Looking for meat" means today what it meant in the '80s. I've always heard that Judas priest as the Fisher-Price's my first metal band. If that's the case, I think I'm ready to move up to a first grade metal band level. This album is really approachable and a great stepping stone into the genre. I'm going to be saying "breaking the law, breaking the law" for the rest of the day now.

Ended up listening to this on Election Day 2024, and found United and Red, White, and Blue particularly poignant. Really excellent head-banging energy, without too much misanthropy.

badass early 80s metal music. rough, tough, and straight up thrashin'. music to listen to when you're riding your big harley davidson across the highway with a cigar and sunglasses. oh yeah brother.

Excellent album! Nice momentum throughout, amazingly iconic 80's metal vibes. Really good.

There were some moments that were a little too repetitive for my taste, and the vocals were hit-or-miss. But overall it was catchy and the guitar work was incredible (I feel like I say that for nearly every metal record haha).

🤘 4

Love when I get pleasantly surprised by this list! Never really looked into Judas Priest, but I like what I hear.

Pretty classic/badass feeling overall. Some good ballads/anthems and just solid riffs/grooves. Understandable why these guys are considered some of the best of the best in heavy metal. Breaking the law is great but The Rage, Rapid Fire, Metal Gods and You Don't Have to be Old to be Wise are my standouts

Great album.

Halford said of Living After Midnight, “That’s where the name comes from. It’s a rock ’n’ roll song about a band coming into town and leaving you at dawn. When we play the song live, no matter where we are in the world, the room just lifts up and the fans go wild. It’s like we’re taking you on a time machine back to 1980, and you’re out partying with your friends.” That’s exactly how it feels listening to this album.

all good but nothing really stuck out

ahhh der priest des judas sie sind iwie immer chli glich aber schaffeds trz, einzigartig z blibe (ih mine auge) ellei de refrain vo metalgods, wo mier als chind nie mega gfalle het, isch fast scho apathisch gsunge? aber ich liebs soo hahaha RAKING THE LAWN RAKING THE LAWN das riff wird mer würkli no für de rest vom tag nahlaufe au united mega en weirde refrain aber die reduzierti art findi eifach nice LIVIIING AFTER MIDNIIIGHT the rage findi isch e agnehmi abwechslig trotz minere nostalgie gsehni, dass geg de schluss nümme soo vill passiert, aber es git trotzdem es starchs 4i

The production actually amazes me. Was not aware of the natural open sound of the rehearsal studio. If you compare the raw edge of this with today's massively overproduced records, i really enjoy this much more than I did in my youth. No overwrought production, instead very solid songwriting with lots of dynamic space.

I've never connected with Judas Priest. I respect the band, but their music doesn't really do it for me. There's nothing particularly wrong with it. I just don't care for heavy metal in general so it really needs to transcend the genre for me to love it. (Looking at you Appetite for Destruction) That said, I'm glad I finally sat through a full JP album. Anyone saying this sounds samey clearly stopped listening by Grinder. United, Living After Midnight, The Rage, and Red, White, & Blue are all great change ups. The Rage might be my favorite track though Breaking the Law and Grinder are also hard to beat. All in all, this is a phenomenal album for people who like heavy metal but won't change your opinion if you don't. Love and respect the band and their place in music history. I'll probably add a few tracks to my playlists too.

Solid Rock

One of the greatest metal albums of all time. The one “mistake” was placing the song ubited in the middle which destroys the hard metal flow it has until then. Although the song is necessary taking i account the historical context of the moment and its not a bad song its not just metal enogh for this song selection. Love ot thou

Rob Halford is such a powerful frontman with such an insane voice! Fantastic 80's heavy metal! Favourite songs: Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law, Grinder, Metal Gods, You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise Least favourite songs: United 4/5

Better than I expected. I can hear bits of Guns n Roses, Motley Crue. Sounds like a better produced Motörhead

Hell yeah. This is some good stuff right here. Not every album on the list needs to be some emotional masterpiece. Sometimes, it's just nice to do some headbanging to some classic metal, and it's hard for metal to get more classic than Judas Priest. This album's great. The sound is strong, and the songs manage to stand out from each other. I really like Rob Halford's vocals. There's a reason why he's considered to be one of the all time greats of metal vocalists. The energy of the album goes on for the perfect amount of time. Songs like "Breaking the Law" are absolute classics and very good songs. The writing is solid. Overall, I don't really have that much to say. This is just some great early metal. It's awesome, and I want more of it. 4/5.

The opening track "Rapid Fire" reminds me so much of Motörhead. the album also contains one of their most famous tracks "Breaking the Law".

While this is not my favourite Priest album, its still undoubtedly an 80s metal classic

Some real hard rock bangers in there

Priest never disappoints. Consistant true icons of metal

Not bad! I've always avoided JP since I'm not the biggest fan of their hits like Breaking the Law, but this album was pretty killer.

If you were there, you know. I was never a fan but it is classic and liked listening to it again.

Great stuff. You can really tell Metallica took a lot from this album.

I happy to get a Judas Priest. I knew this would be a fun listen. I liked them well enough back in the day, but when my son was 12 he started to get into them so we took him to see them in concert. Some really solid songs on here, and now I can't get Grinder out of my head.

Before listening: I have obviously heard of Judas Priest but I have never heard Judas Priest. I believe they're a metal band; a bit like Black Sabbath? I could be totally wrong but I'm looking forward to this album. After listening: Well, they don't sound anything like Sabbath. I read that they're considered a thrash metal band (like early Metallica) but I feel they are more like a hair metal band; akin to Def Leppard or Poison in my opinion. All that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this album. First two songs I didn't like very much but after Breaking Law it was banger after banger.

In your face guitar. Heavy metal music! Loved it.

A good album, started off strong with the first song, Rapid Fire and it stayed strong. I also liked Breaking The Law and The Rage.

Really enjoyable album, amazing for working out to. Some brilliant moments, but not quite 5 stars…close though!

Good. I enjoyed.

Excellent British Heavy Metal, Judas Priest bring not just excellent energy, a charismatic frontman, driving drums and bass and stirring riffs but lyrical content which is genuinely thoughtful and interesting - not the usual nihilistic anti-religion woe-is-me content often found in the genre but a call for understanding and unity against an oppressive establishment whilst respecting non-conformity of the individual. Impressive.

- Bin großer Priest Fan, sehe aber persönlich 3-4 Alben vor British Steel: Defenders Of The Faith, Painkiller, Screaming for Vengeance und ggf. auch Point Of Entry.

Classic metal album from one of the greats. Such an iconic album cover!

I'm sure that I had a Judas Priest album when I was a kind, but for the life of me I have no idea which one it was. Not this, that's for sure. I grew up listening to the NWOBHM bands that followed Priest. They were always there in the background but I never really got in to them. The cassette I must have had just never really fitted with the sort of stuff I enjoyed and for some reason Priest always seemed a bit corny. Listening to this now, 40 years later, I was clearly wrong. The influence of touring with AC/DC is clear, and I can hear how this must have impacted the sound of bands like Saxon. I really enjoyed it and will (and have) listen again. Multiple times. It's not quite up there with the absolute drive that bands like Motorhead added to this sort of sound, but it's pretty darned good.

An undeniable classic

Living after midnight is one of the best driving songs out there. full of energy. easy to sing along to. Just a really solid album. Rob Halford spawned a new generation of metal... or is at least one of the best examples. Just a great album.

I like it. Good summer driving music. I wish more bands were still making music like this.

"Living after Midnight" ist so das einzige Lied, dass ich von Judas Priest kannte und war umso gespannter auf das gesamte Album. Es ist ein wunderbares, eingängiges HardRock-Album mit tollen Guitarren-Soli. Sehr gut produziert und tolle Nummern. Unbedingt anhören!

Interesting

Much better than I expected.

"Maiden and Priest were the gods that we praised." Hard rock with driving rhythms - this is heavy metal.

Rapid Fire - 8/10 Metal Gods - 8/10 Breaking the Law - 10/10 Grinder - 8/10 United - 9/10 You Don’t Have To Be Old To Be Wise - 9/10 Living After Midnight - 9/10 The Rage - 8/10 Steeler - 7.5/10 Red, White & Blue - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 84/100

A first for me. Almost everything i could ever ask for in some BHM. Is it Maiden? nope. But it's bloody great

My expectation having never really listed or was a fan was that this album would be a struggle. It’s amazing. Not one bad song, variety. Add me to the JP fam club.

Really enjoyed this album! Recognized a few songs and overall this is just great old school rock.

Gear: Focal Clear Mix: Drums immer tight. Vocals angemessen überdramatisch und überlebensgroß. Grooviger Basslauf bei "The Rage" einfach perfekt. Musik: zu Recht British Heavy Metal Klassiker 🤟 Wertung: 🦾🦾🦾🦾/5

This was one of the first albums I ever bought, which is odd as I was never really a massive fan of Judas Priest back in the day. I distinctly remember them performing Living After Midnight on Top of the Pops with lots of dry ice. That single got to number 12 in the UK top 40 and so did Breaking the Law. I doubt the same would happen if those singles were to be released any time after the 1980s. It's a technically competent album, without being overly flashy. I've heard many covers of Judas Priest songs by bands with more skilful musicians and to be honest, it's not always a good thing. These are pretty basic songs, more rock and roll than heavy metal in places. I'm not giving this 5 stars, as I've always found this album lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on. There's other Judas Priest albums that I would definitely give 5 stars to though, so I hope they're on the list.

As a metal head I do enjoy some Judas Priest. I think the highlight of this album has to be Breaking The Law, by far their biggest hit. There are some other good songs in there too. I particularly like the ones with extended guitar solos like Grinder. There is something about Judas Priest that just falls a bit short though. While I think they emulate all of the elements that make up classic 80s metal, they aren't particularly strong in any areas. The vocals are good but don't hold up to the likes of Dio (one of the closest band comparisons imo). The guitar riffs throughout most songs are pretty basic and forgettable. The solos are good but they're too few and far between. I feel like Judas Priest never really found an identity beyond the typical metal tropes and that's why their best album here caps out at a 4 for me.

så corny at den looper rundt og bliver fed igen. Jeg elsker Rob Halfords stemme

Fed fredag på en onsdag! Et par bangers og resten ret høj kvalitet!

interesting heavy metal sound, better than I thought. I liked Grinder and living after midnight

It's a bit cheesy and of its time, but it's also glamorous, bombastic, full of energy, and just fuckin rips. This is peak 80s heavy metal (with a strong punk core) and something we all could use a refresher of every now and then.

One of the strongest, most enduring exports forged during the almighty New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the late 70s/early 80s.

Loved it right until the bonus material kicked in

I normally am not a huge fan of classic metal, but this album surprised me. I usually associate that scene with bands like Motley Crüe and Aerosmith, which to be honest I can't stand. But this album definitely felt ahead of its time for the early 80s. The riffs are really good, and the vocals especially were the part I was pleasantly surprised with the most.

A core new wave of British heavy metal album, poised to influence 80s thrash from top to bottom.

Breaking the law

Ayyy that was a blast! Solid early metal music. Full of energy and grit, this is top tier leather jacket metal. Would listen again

Very classic rock!

Solid metal album, and a fantastic drummer on this record! The songs are very catchy and Halford sounds great. Standout tracks: Rapid Fire, Breaking The Law, Grinder, United, Living After Midnight, The Rage, Steeler 8 out of 10

Kind of amazing that an album could be so prescient about the pull of the cultural tides. It’s like they had a fever dream of what the 80s had in store, then brought it into being. It kind of sucks for them that this sound has become a caricature of the indulgences of the 80s, but isn’t mockery the highest form of flattery or something like that? And I should have put it together a long time ago, but I never realized this is where Beavis and Butthead got their tag line from. It’s the opportunity to weave the threads of my life together like this that keeps me coming back for an album a day.

first listen classic heavy metal man, tho to my modern ears its kinda dad rock now

I appreciate the fact that these fellas have no interest in dicking around, even on the (many) accessible tunes.

Abwechslungsreiches Rock-Album

This is dated but still a lot of fun. More refined and less bombastic than the bands that would follow in their footsteps. Interestingly the lyrics have more in common with punk than with metal. Best listened to loud.

Surprised!

This album is more than a pure heavy metal album. It’s mostly a metal album, but it shows some rock chops extending beyond the pigeonhole of “heavy metal”. Don’t get me wrong - there’s plenty of metal coming through with the dual guitars and driving rhythm section, but a song like “United” gives more of the anthemic Queen vibes than metal. The songwriting was surprisingly tight for me; some great pop sensibilities hidden amongst distorted guitars. The production is very clean, allowing the listener to appreciate the vocals, the guitars, bass, and drums, together and separately. A lot of metal production can get muddy with all of the distortion, but here everything is balanced so you can easily pick out the individual components.

Had 3 or 4 songs which were good, which puts it above most albums on this list. Would listen to more Priest.

Sorry haters, this is great! Over the top, motorcycle riding, leather pants, screaming British Metal... or NWOBHM (New wave of British heavy metal). Though I am not the biggest Judas fan I love listening to some of their classics from time to time. One of my favorite things when going to classic rock/metal bars younger was seeing the pseudo-macho-sexist metalheads finding out that one of their biggest idols was gay, Rob Halford was always super proud and had some pretty explicit lyrics (ie. Turbo Lover), \o/

I knew the two most well-known songs: Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight. Rapid Fire and Metal Gods were an adrenaline fueled start to a spicy album. I really liked the song United and have added it to my growing playlist. Obviously these guys are known as heavy metal influencers, but it's the type of heavy metal that can be enjoyted by both metalheads and modern rock fans. I really enjoyed me some Judas, and I didn't even need 80s cocaine!

Classic and great heavy metal

Breakin the Law and Livin after Midnight alone make this a four star effort

Pretty fun. Pretty rock and roll. "Breaking the Law" rules.

Forgot how good this album is. Need to buy it on vinyl for the collection. A good one.

•Not owned: Streaming •Never has an album cover matched the musical content so perfectly. Great use of industrial sounds to bring the metal imagery to life. Great cuts: “United,” “Living After Midnight,” and “Metal Gods.” Check the dub influence on “The Rage.” •4/5

i enjoyed Breaking the Law. Would be a good song to break the law to.

Loved it, reminded me of my teenage days and threw me back into a whole day of metal history :) Still a pretty great album with a lot of classics.

Thought this was great throughout. Fun tracks, great style. Perfect example of the metal movement from it's era. 8

Classic heavy metal, good slbum.

Living after Midnight and Breaking the law are classics.

Not a super fan of British metal but has some serious bangers on it!

Gran álbum de Judas, con condimentos extra al género que los hacen sobresalir y diferenciarse del resto.

Set the tone for 80's Heavy Metal. A classic.

This album makes KISS completely unnecessary. One of the best album covers ever.

Fanatastic thrash metal. Favourite track: Breaking the Law Rob Halford | Metal God : Responsible for the leather look in metal.

Great album, enjoyed listening to this Top tracks: Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight

Heavy hitting and a lot of fun.

i didnt expect to like this album but i have to tip my cap. this is a heavy metal classic.

This album is a 4, minus a full point for that Red White and Blue song, but that was a bonus track maybe? So back up to 3.5. And rounding up bc BREAKING THE LAW BREAKING THE LAW

no notes except that patriotic song was weird

When I think about Judas Priest, this is the record I remember. Lyrics that can be understood with the music that is Judas Priest.

Bloody rocking good fun. 4 stars.

It was surprisingly good. I enjoyed it. Made me think of Jack Black doing a Dio impersonation.

Classic metal and very enjoyable.

Absolut okay! Harter Rock, aber auch eingängige Titel.

Finest stuff ... sometimes I regret not to be born earlier to listen to this music straight from its beginning.

\m/ \m/

United, united, united we stand! For the longest time my only thought regarding Judas Priest is that they were music for rednecks. When I started getting properly back into metal in the mid-aughts I bought a copy of this album in the used cd section and (finally) realized young me was a big dummy. This thing sounds great, doesn’t overstay its welcome, has the radio hits AND has a bunch of gems I’d never heard but now hold in high regard. Why didn’t they play “Metal Gods” on the classic rock station? That song rips and gets to the point right there in the title. “The Rage” is a mid-tempo stomper and “United” is a sing-a-long song from a guy nobody can really sing like. If I liked “Breaking the Law” better this would be a 5 star banger for me, but… that song is still kinda for rednecks. Which is fine! Just not my favorite.

Some awesome rock songs, some of the songs have a similar rythm which makes them feel a bit samey but enoy it, plus Living AfterMidnight and Breaking the law are classics

Different than what I expected, a lot milder.

Judas Priest rock harder than most. Loud, aggressive, epitome of early metal. Love it.

Solid old school metal album. It's a bit front loaded as the final third fades a bit. Metal Gods is an all time banger. This is the best Priest album as the rest of their catalogue is a tad inconsistent so credit Robert Dimery for nailing this one.

Of the early Judas Priest albums i've heard, this is probably the most basic of them, but that's not exactly a bad thing. Most of the songs here are just straight forward bangers, especially 'Breaking the Law', not hard to see why that continues to be probably their biggest song. I think 'United' was the only stinker on here, the chorus and lack of energy really drags it out. Outside of that though, this is a super consistent and easy to listen to metal album, the sort you'd recommend to someone trying to get into the genre.

Nice, classic metal. These albums have had not much to talk about for me.

Not a preferred genre, but I liked this album quite a bit and will probably revisit it again in the future.

Very good album. 4/5 stars.

You can hear all the little seeds of future bands being sewn in this album. I can’t not think of Beavis and Butthead when I hear “Breaking The Law” though heh heh heh.

classic

Nice and solid heavy metal record. Not my favorite of the band, but still not disappointing. Keeps the vibe going throughout the 10 songs.

rock on🤘🏻

I call a lot of other early metal albums "proto metal" but this one still holds up even in 2023. It isn't even in my top 10 but it is good.

Rock-y, I like it

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I’ve never seen myself as a huge Judas Priest fan, but the guitar work was great and it was very digestible. However, this time I happened to notice a lot of similarities between them and AC/DC (which I also don’t particularly love).
