Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Sonic Youth inspired, but not really my sound.
Talk about a forgettable record. I remember downloading this when I saw it get a little bit of hype in real time and then laughing when I saw it in the first edition of this book. It’s fine for what it is, it’s just super uninteresting. It has some parts that rock and I think the more experimental noisy stuff is when it shines, but otherwise it’s like a hundred other bands of the era.
Een soort van mix van Smashing Pumpkins en Marilyn Manson. Het is beluisterbaar, maar niet echt m'n ding
An album I've never heard of, from a band I've never heard of, released at the nadir of 2000s music... Oh boy, am I looking forward to this. Reading up, the album was beset by arguments from the band - with rolling eyes, one observes that this is always such a good sign. Now what is reassuring is that the record label did nothing to help them. Given the staggering lack of wit, nous or decent taste in the music industry then, this is the smallest glimmer of hope about what looks, on paper at least, like it's going to be a lightly fried turd of an album. Right then. Let's give it a listen. OK, for first impressions, I can see exactly why they were signed to begin with. Despite being a cross between Jane's Addiction and Melt Banana, there's a little bit of talent here. Unfortunately I don't think that little bit of talent ratios well enough to the amount of talent they think they have. This music is the very epitome of "Prima donna", but without the goods to make the bad worth tolerating. Had this been as workmanlike and as dedicated as Melt Banana, it could have been so much more. But it's swimming in testosterone and misplaced swagger, like every other damn thing from the dead years of music. No lads, you're not the next Beatles. Get over yourselves, play some music. Only play for the audience, yeah, not your own egoes.
Man I'm really just not a post-punk marty. It's decent and if I was a teenager who didn't get along with my parents I could see myself raging to this but the whole extremely compressed and distorted vocal thing just doesn't do it for me. Like bro what are you saying?
I thought this reminded me of Marilyn Manson. It's alright but I don't think it's anything special. Didn't love the vocals so for that reason I'm a
I hate this horrendous album art work. The music does not do anything for me, but it’s not terrible. I just don’t vibe with this.
sounds like they’re trying too hard to be loud and impressive while not trying hard enough to write an actual song. a couple of clever guitar moments here and there quickly spoiled the arrogant twenty something year old thinger who thinks he’s deep and special. fuck off the lot of you. this record is ass. this isn’t post hardcore it’s just noise. noise usually always sucks. truly a forgettable undancable record made by some shitty local band.
I guess if by post-hardcore you mean heavily distorted guitars and zero energy, sure...

lähimpänä did nt listeniä mitä koskaan ollut, iltamyöhässä eilisen albumi tämä ja pitäisi vielä tehdä asioita...ja seitsemältä nousuun aamulla.. mitä saan palkinnoksi, early 2000 luvun rock album paskaa.. eikä löydy spotifystä.. pitää jostain juutuubista kaivata playlistaa..tänään ei vittu anneta propseja. ykköstä naamaan niin saatanan tylysti. ehkä toimisi salimusiikina, hyvänä päivänä 2, ehkä 3... parempi kuin The White Stripes bändi. Shot a lot of heroin to this entire cd. Good times, bad times,, jooh semmonen yleisö. no ota 2 on the lash
Yeah...hmmm...no...not my thing...maybe it was the day, but...didn't enjoy whatsoever. Nearly was a one. Ecch.
726 albums in. We've not heard from Dolly Parton yet. Nor Annie Lennox, Diana Ross, Laurie Anderson. No Joan Jett. No Pat Benatar. No Janelle Monae. But The Icarus Line, we've got them. I was completely underwhelmed by this album. Why is it here? It seemed completely generic and lacking in any kind of spark. How is it notable? How is it important? I don't think it's "good." It's...ok. But what's next?
Pareceu-me uma tentativa de ser um white stripes raivoso.
The album was not that good. It was loud and it was not screaming but not understandable. Not need to revisit.
not it
Who ever likes this should revisit. Your wrong. This is terrible. Does not deserve to be on this list
Probably would have liked this at the time; now it's just a bit numbing and not hardcore enough.
24th August 2023 Listened during the day, managed a gym session then home. An impression of Iggy. 2.5 if I could.
Noisy
I've never heard of this album or artist before, but when I looked over the track listing and saw song titles like "Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers" and "Meatmaker," my expectations were pretty low. Overall, I'd say this album was okay. The vocals reminded me of early U2 and Echo & The Bunnymen, which I enjoyed. The instrumentation was very unique, especially when compared to mainstream rock of this era. The middle of the album was my favorite part; "Spike Island" through "Big Sleep" were my favorite songs, but everything else was just okay.
Pfft
To sum this up, steal from other bands, add some fuzzy noise and do it poorly.
Kinda boring. What’s special or influential or worthy of being on this list about this record?
Some interesting tracks but not enough quality overall for me.
After all the effort I put into finding an almost complete playlist of this album, it turned out to be massively underwhelming. The thing with noise rock is it sounds like all other noise rock. Noisy...and not much else.
I don't think that it really belong on this list. I like some dirty, harsh records but I don't think this neither special nor innovative. If this is peak noise rock that I don't want to hear any more of it.
Quite dated and not as good as similar records.
Never heard of this artist before. I think I might have liked the first song, but after that it all went downhill from there. It was loud, abrasive, repetitive, and incoherent. I couldn't get into it at all. I was unable to finish the album because it was tiring to listen to.
Meh
A little bit over top for a Monday evening.
Don't like the vocals and pretty much all of the songs are forgettable. I do like noisy rock and hardcore punk but no song on this album stands out that much. It's still fine to listen to but I won't be replaying it. Makes w´me wonder why it's part of the 1001 best albums. Highlights: Up Against The Wall Motherfucker, On The Lash, Caviar
Definitely feels like nice, garage-y stuff. I found it very washed out by the meandering nature of every song. I liked it cause it clearly inspired later bands to make more refined music that's actually enjoyable to listen to.
Today's album was a headache inducer. I've never heard of The Icarus Line before today, and from what I read, they are a post hardcore/aggro punk group. From that description I deduce that this album is going to be loud and angry. That is exactly what it is. It is mostly distortion and noise. At some points, even the vocalist is singing through a distortion filter for some ungodly reason, as if what this music needed was more feedback. It reminds me quite a bit of Nine Inch Nails, which is ironic because one of the guitarists from this band (Aaron North) left and joined NIN. Is a full minute of feedback distortion necessary at the end of Sea Sick? I think not. This is not music, and has influenced nothing. This is just noise with the sole purpose of being loud and annoying. To be on a list like this, you need to either be able to play instruments, have been highly influential, or have a huge, dedicated fan base. These tools have none of this from what I can tell. Spotify says average monthly listeners is only around 1,000 and their most "popular" song only has 50,000 listens (most of which were probably poor bastards trying to do this generator). Overall, this album is complete garbage. I've already forgot most of it, and have recovered most of my hearing. I will never subject myself to this trash ever again and I wonder what the fuck the list creator was smoking when he thought that shit like this was deserving of this list. Favourite songs: Virgin Velcro, Spike Island, Up Against the Wall Motherfucker Least favourite songs: Spit On It, On the Lash, Meatmaker, Sea Sick 2/5
Decent 3
I feel like on paper this album should be a home run for me, but I just found it very boring throughout and certainly overly long. It drones a bit and doesn’t really hook me. Meatmaker was probably the most interesting in my opinion.
Kinda trashy, noisy Rock 'n' Roll vibes. Christ, still 3 minutes to go... Excruciatingly boring and about 20 minutes too long. 2 / 5 stars.
2.5
I'm not much into this type of music these Days but this was not terrible. I would have been jamming this in the day.
i usually like this kind of music however this was just not very good. awful ending track
Hardcore foward thinkers or the last gasp of 90s rockism? These guys rock. That's about all they do. Would not be out of place in a small town college bar. Not necessarily a criticism.
Not my thing
This reminds me of some of the 70s heavy rock that I liked merged with a noisy grunge backdrop. The guitar sound on the title track is so managed by the production team it would be difficult to come close to it live. The speedy stuff is tiring and I don't see these guys adding much to what was on set on the table before them.
I don't know what to say about this. Maybe with another listen I'd give it a higher score
I was a bit embarrassed that I've never heard of this band, but then I see that they have very few listens on Spotify, so I guess it;s not just me. Lots of White Stripes vibes here, minus the enjoyment.
It’s noisy. I don’t really know how to feel; I don’t hate it, but there’s really no reason it should be here. ‘Meatmaker’ randomly reminds me of Suicide, though.
Apparently I didn't very much care for this one, I stopped listening to it a couple of tracks in because I was distracted by stuff to do on the weekend, and it just never occurred to me to pick it back up.
I like this album. It's another that I don't understand the criteria for it's inclusion in the 1001 list, though. I'd rank it 3-4 stars on its own, but in the context of it being a "must listen" record, I'm not sure it meets those aspirations.
It was OK, didn't think much of it
Despite what the Wikipedia states, the album is wholly unremarkable.
Probably a big bunch of nonces
Niet best, paar nummers maar geluisterd want stond niet op spotify, excusé
It's not bad in any way; just as a matter of personal preference, it didn't quite click for me. Felt too generic, I think.
2.3 - I hosted a radio show when I was a college freshman and the studio was crammed with records like this - anonymous, generic “loud rock” (our music director’s lame attempt at assigning them a genre). We’d be encouraged to spin a batch of records for a couple of weeks before those were shelved en masse somewhere unknown in order to make room for the next batch of faceless bands.
Ýmislegt í þessu sem hefur hellings potential en ég náði ekki að tengja við fyrstu hlustun. Reyni aftur síðar.
Sounded like Velvet Underground to me in many spots.
WHY is this album on here? I am sure there are albums more deserving of the slot occupied by this album. I don't normally quote Wikipedia in my reviews, but the article for this album notes it as "one of 2004's most critically acclaimed releases". Says who? I could hear some of the sounds of 2000s rock in here, specifically bands like A Perfect Circle, Chevelle, and such, which I like. But this band and album didn't hit the mark. That is to say, parts of this album were NEARLY tolerable, but this was definitely "noise rock" with an emphasis on "noise".
HL: "On the Lash", “Seasick”, "Spit on It" Skipped a couple albums to listen to this 'blind', as it's always a treat to discover a new artist. I think. I don't have anything personal against noisy garage rock; some songs I'll likely revisit in the near future, while others stray into obnoxious, edgy territory. 2.5* January 26, 2023
Not a fan of this one.
Sounds okay, but not on Spotify. So I couldn’t be bothered to listen to all of it.
Well, that was noisy. An American Bad Seeds? US noise punk. Scuzzy production. No clear tunes. Music for disaffected youth methinks. Means nothing to me. 2
This is some good ol loud ass rock done bad
Too much for me
I’ve already forgotten it.
I'm absolutely baffled as to what warranted this to be on the list at any point
Wickarus
It’s okay, feels a bit generic, mostly don’t care for the singers voice very forgettable.
I'm sure this album could be much more enjoyable with fewer songs. This kind of noise rock music is not so bad (it's pretty interesting sometimes), but it's annoying after 35 minutes and worsens every minute. This is important enough to be part of the 1001 list. Still, it has many more lost opportunities than actual realization, mainly because of the lack of brevity and self-awareness of its limitations. 2 stars
Meh
Saw the cover and was hoping for something interesting :(
This feels like a mix of emo bands and the white stripes. Some of the songs are okay and not that messy. Some other songs are clearly early 2000s emo type and not that enjoyable. It’s a relatively loud album but without much substance. 4.6/10
Never heard of this artist, and it didn't leave much of a mark on me, it's just fine noisy garage rock. Probably will never think about it again.
This may make me sound old, but it's a bit too noisy for me. Some interesting stuff, but overall not my favorite. 2 stars.
Generic, overly slick, and shiny with substance. Not a bit of it feels sincere.
Reminds me a bit of smashing pumpkins but more forgettable
Not for me
I got the Mars Volta vibes, but without the goodness that comes with listening to Frances the Mute.
2.5
Not heard of this band before so could be interesting. Unfortunately it wasn't. Rather messy, not distinct and repetitive.
Idk just didn’t hit
I don't understand the praise for this album.
Not much for me here. First song was okl...had a bit of a Jane's Addiction feel. After a 2nd song that did nothing for me, 3rd song ok again as a matter of fact the next couple songs were not bad but after that it became increasingly difficult to listen to this album. Vocals too hard and aggressive as was the music. Much of the rest borderline unlistenable. 2.5 🌟
Big Sleep and a few other songs are relatively engaging, but as a soiree this feels musically obligatory. It's not my genre, but not a particularly interesting one anyway.
I remember them from "back in rhe day". I'm pretty sure that this CD sat in a pile on my room for months at a time. Why did it sit for months? Because it's just not that impressive.
not my jam
Eh
Not bad. Must hear? Nah.
Unfortunately this CD only contained a bunch of noise, no songs or anything else that could be called music was detected
Nothing unusual or interesting about this
people said it shouldn't be on the list
I might need to Re-llisten, but nothing on here connected with me.
Never heard of these guys before, sounded interesting enough, although it was difficult to judge on one listening. I'll maybe check out their other albums on Spotify though.
Fairly dull. Felt like more AI generated rock but this time from the early 2000s. Occasionally I found myself liking a short part of it but then got bored again.
Thanks I hate it
So much sound, saying so little. What a mess. Proper California vacuity, really testing the listener’s patience.
Yeah, noise punk-pop post-hardcore something :) Homogeneous album... (4/10) FT: On the Lash
Ruidisme i distorsió molt del moment i el lloc, que ha envellit malament. Algun tema se salva, com 'Spike Island' o sobretot la llarga 'Getting Bright at Night', però és un disc que en el context del 2022 passaria força desapercebut
First listen. Need to hear more of it.
Sounds like the worst bits of Suicide and Death from Above combined. I like both of those, but this isn’t great.
Nothing special. A bunch of noise rock for the sake of noise.
Couldn't really get into it sorry
Un album de petits emmerdeurs qui aiment bien mettre des bâtons dans les roues de ceux qui veulent finir le générateur.
I like Spike Island, and then Getting Bright at Night through White Devil but Kiss like Lizards and particularly Meatmaker are bloody awful. They were so close to being more than noisy noise.
Meh
The album started off OK with Up Against the Wall Motherfucker. It’s not really my vibe but I could listen to it. Then came Spit On It, which was utterly horrific. Luckily it wasn’t all down hill from there. A couple tracks are also OK like: Spike Island, Getting Bright at Night, and Big Sleep. Again, not really my thing but worth listening to once. But there are also tracks like Meatmaker that make me want to turn this album off. I do feel bad for the band that their label refused to promote the album at all and made them spend their own money for music video production. In the end it’s a mix of ⭐️ to ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ songs.
Couldnt manage it all
Helaas niet te vinden op deezer, dus op youtube geluisterd. Ik werd hier nu wel echt wat zenuwachtig van.
Heb het zeven nummers volgehouden, maar toen was de koek echt op.
Och heden, ontevreden jongemannen.
The style is hard to adapt to and the lyrics impossible to understand just by listening, but it's quite an experience.
The album and the band were new to me. There were tracks (e.g. "Spike Island") that remended me of Stone Temple Pilots or sounded like The Icarus Line could have been an influence on STP. There was more noise on this album that I wanted to listen to. I was not expecting to hear saxophone in some of the tracks from this genre of music, but in the end it was just more noise. I didn't hate the album, but I didn't like it.
Shrill, loud and unoriginal
"one of 2004's most critically acclaimed releases" Oh dear! Noisy, scuzzy rock. Has its place somewhere, but not with me. Still not as bad as Pere Ubu, so 2 out of 5.
Well they're certainly not the White Stripes. I don't hate it, but don't particularly like it either. Spike Island is a good song. I wish there was another White Stripes album on this list to take Penance Soiree's place.
It was okay. I don't like this sound/style of music, but I can't lie when I say some of the songs tickled my brain in some capacity. Some of the songs had noises that annoyed me, but the others made up for that. Favorite track: White Devil
It's... fine? I struggled with this one, because while I liked some aspects of it (they're clearly accomplished musicians), so much of it made me want to turn it off. The band sounds like a pop-metal band that a record executive convinced to make an indie record. Of course, then I look into this band and they seem like the real deal. Maybe it's the lead singer's hair-metal affectations or faux-badass song titles like "Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers," but this sounds like Jet to me.
verging on hardcore / metal and i'm not into that today... maybe a good album but i don't know honestly
Ok not fave
Cómo que no termino de ser ni una ni otra cosa
Boring. Scream singing. Drums too forward on a lot of tracks and an overall focus on LOUDNESS. Sounds a lot like white stripes but bad.
Too heavy and loud for me.
2.5
If Jane's Addiction's less cool little brother had a child with a cousin of Oasis, this is what it'd sound like. It's almost good, which is why it's so annoying that it isn't good. It wants to sound like the things I listened to in the 90s. Thosse things from the 90s still sound better.
trash rock soms leuke dingen niet mijn ding
So pretentious) Just go listen to deftones, limbizkit or bri'ish punk
there is no shot this is top 1001 all time
Brief review. I’d never heard of them, and sometimes that leads to a pleasant surprise. Not today. I didn’t like anything at all on here and can’t image how it’s on the list.
Tylsä ja yllättävän ärsyttävä, huono. 1/5
Just noise, and not the good kind
Fanns ej på Spotify men borde hitta någon annanstans
Not for me
Malo
THIS IS SUCH A CHORE TO GET THROUGH. Like it sounds like a charisma-free slurry of other bands.
No (screamed incoherently).
Extremely annoying sounds with production that sounds more like the 19th Century than the 21st Century. Favorite Track: "Spike Island".
1/5
loud and noisy, as it supposed to be. but also veeeeeery boring and not at all impressive
I really didn't care for this album and I can't explain exactly why. Eventually I started to kind of dig some of the songs and when I looked at Apple Music to see the song name I realized the album had ended and it was playing music from other bands.
Abrasive just for the sake of being abrasive. Very unpleasant to listen to. There are a couple spots that I enjoy, but not even a full songs worth.
Penance Soiree by The Icarus Line plays less like a cohesive post-hardcore album and more like a slow-motion, brick-walled train wreck that leaves you begging for the silence of the credits. From the sandpaper-rough, overly compressed production of "Up against the wall" to the outright unlistenable noise of "Spit on it" and "Kiss like lizards," the album suffers from a severe mixing crisis where the vocals feel completely devoid of emotion and buried under a heap of garbage. While fleeting moments of competence emerge—like the decent guitar hook on "On the lash," a slight recovery on "Spike Island," and a hypnotic, creepy vibe on "Meat maker"—they are quickly swallowed by bloated progressive rock experiments like "Getting bright at night" and baffling filler like "Virgin velcro." Ultimately, the record’s inclusion on the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list feels like an elaborate, out-of-touch joke; it's a painful exercise in sonic irritation where the absolute best part of the album isn't its actual conclusion, but simply the fact that it finally ended.
How do you make noise rock so bland? I don't know but just when you think something different is going to kick in, it goes back to bland. Boring.
Just feels like a mashup of a thousand other bands - but nothing really jumps out. I can hear Soundgarden, White Stripes, Jesus Lizard, Sonic Youth, The Stooges - just to name a few. Not worth having to sit thru this album ever again.
Errrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmmm - what now?
Ummm. So respectfully I would need a lot of money to listen to this album again. Did not like.
Based on when this came out I'm sure I would have been *OK* with seeing this band open for someone I liked (At the Drive In maybe?) But, I wouldn't buy any merch or seek them out - unless they blew me away!! Even then that high of remembering how good they were live would only last about a dozen listens - MAX
Could not listen...
Finns inte på Spotify
meh meh. like a boring nin or something.
Wasn’t too keen on this. Sounds like so many other bands from around that time.
Too noisy
listening to half-hit wonders that nobody's ever talked about again, that is truly the penance soiree for us millennials
Remember after Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was an outsized hit, companies were scrambling to get a share of the extreme sports dollar? And there were all those off brand skateboarding games? If you told me this album was joint-released as the soundtrack to like Danny Way’s Sk8 Quest or something, I would believe you.
Forgettable. Makes me want to say something nice about the white stripes. I know this is really a “hater” review, but for top 1000? I would’ve taken something that sounds worse if it were at least interesting to listen to.
Well! That was crap!
Barulhento
Nope
This album is ass, similar to the way sonic youth is ass, but with more screaming and noise and less all around shitty vocals and more coherent instruments in better tune. Still utter trash, another album with no place on this list. Does anybody actually like this band???
idrk not my jam really
My ears disliked most tracks
I’ve never heard of this band, and I’m glad about that...
Favorite track(s): they all sound the same. Just because your production sounds like shit doesn't turn your band into The Stooges. Back to the Seven Nation Army covers, guys.
meaningless noise
Buegh
Naw dogg. The other one star reviews said it all.
Did not find these songs interesting
Had a super strong hunch that this album was going to blow based on the cover art, and well, what do you know.
Did not like.
It’s a really difficult one to get through. You can hear the germ of some ideas on songs like Getting Bright at Night, but most are suffocated by really unpleasant, distorted guitars. It’s a wall of noise which leaves you with a headache.
Disco de mierda... Fucking hippies motherfuckers
This actually sucks so bad
what the hell was this
Yawn.
The only difference between this and Black Flag is that Black Flag did it first. Both still suck.
I thought I might like this album, as I looked it up before I listened- but was disappointed
Yawn
Absolutely not
Like darker and noisier Jet. A little too drug addled for me. Every song devolved into this dude whining. Couldn’t finish don’t give af about your scumbag lifestyle. Sonic youth fans probably love this.
Ugh. Wtf?!?!
i really did try to listen to this album - after previewing each song about to give it a full listen - my migraine said nope
as somebody who has just come out of a test tube an hour ago, this is the most unique album i've ever heard. it doesn't sound anything like katy perry at all!
This is so 2004, it actually is painful.
What a fucking racket
This album was so unremarkable, it was noisy with bad vocals. I like grunge but this was just a bad, boring album.
This was a mess. There's good noisy rock, no doubt about that, but this here felt like something where nothing sticks out and some guys would just write the music the way to anoyther other people.
I had never heard of The Icarus Line when this album popped up, and I wish it had stayed like that.
It was always a concern it would happen one day. I hoped it wouldn't, but it really did feel inevitable after all this time. I didn't want it to be true, but I have to admit: I may be turning into my mother. This was just noise. So much noise you could barely hear the vocal. Seriously, the vocal was so low in the mix, I have no idea why they would choose to do that on purpose. The weird noise that sounded a bit like a squeaky duck getting further and further away from the microphone at the end of Meatmaker might have been my high point. I thought this was shite. 1/5
Ouch. Debut or not, that was tough for me to get through. Penance Soiree, theoretically metal tinged punk has two (2) listenable songs, (Spike Island and Party the Baby Off) the rest are harsh skippers, save yourself the time. (1.4*s) Take off all your clothes…
This album has me truly baffled. How did it get on the 1001 list? How was it a top album of 2004? How does it get so much praise? I feel like The Icarus Line and Penance Soiree should be an unknown artist/record if not for it popping up on Spotify's Discover Weekly playlist. There is zero appeal to it and nothing stands out as a quality or interesting piece of work. Mostly just a noisy POS. Although not the worst thing I've listened to, this is probably the first time I am really doubting the list. You could poll 100 people and I don't think any of them would have ever heard of this band. Get out of here...0.91 stars.
Based on just the title of the first track, I'll bid a blind nil. 200 points for me!
This was rough. Didn’t get it at all.
Not for me
Sigh.
Not good enough in any of its genreblending to stand out. Little to no relistenability. Passes for rock but might as well be alternative. Sadly don't listen to this before you die. The White Stripes had better percussive elements, the Hives had better grooves and melodies, the libertines and Strokes had better lofi vocals. On to the next.
At this point I have to ask what the criteria is to get on this list?
Not my cup of tea. Aggressive in an un fun way. I would not listen again.
Noise pollution
Zu den bekannten Songs zählen „Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers“, „Spit on It“, „On the Lash“, „Kiss Like Lizards“ und „Getting Bright at Night“. Die Produktion verzichtet auf übermäßige Politur, wodurch die aggressive Energie der Band erhalten bleibt. Das Album spricht Hörer an, die einen direkten, kompromisslosen Rocksound bevorzugen. Bewertung: Ein konsistentes, dichtes Rockalbum mit Fokus auf Ausdruck und Intensität.
I did not like this.
This album is a horrendous cacophony, steering between punk, metal and post rock. I will not be searching out the rest of their catalogue…
This type of music is just not for me.
I wanted to like this but I just didn't. If I wanted to listen to this genre, there are other bands/albums I would reach for first. The whole album just blended into one long, loud, wine. I liked Spike Island but that's about it.
This wasn't a pleasant album to listen to in the morning. The mixing (or maybe lack thereof) makes the distorted guitars almost hurt my ears. The singing and other instruments didn't help it at all. I usually try and find some positive parts of an album even if I rate the whole experience as low. I didn't find anything this time though.
Couldn’t finish listening
What a yawn! Plodding and limp.
Poo
This sounds like a mash-up of every early/mid aughts band - and it is not a success.
Each song has an intro that sounds like it’s setting up for some cool, heavy shit. Then each song proceeds into generic 2000s indie garbage.
eh
Not for me!
Good grief man. Rename the book 1001 ways to torture me, This is bloody terrible. Less than zero stars.
No idea what the heck it was except that it was noisy and bad..
It may have come on a bad day, but i've never heard of this album and I totally hated it. Sorry to any fans out there. Seems to me that there was some misguided hype around the time of its release (where it was built up for being something that it wasn't) before the band quickly revealed themselves to be unspectacular. Painful and a living torture to listen.
Waste of time, talentless American copy of decent British indie music.
The Good: This is going to be an interesting evening! The Bad: I missed the memo that stated a Soiree can also be shit… The Ugly: Nothing can get uglier than the penance of listening to this… Noise… Shit noise… 1*
Some songs are too long. Don't like the music.
Dreadful. I nearly liked it and can see why it fits in with the strong rock themes of this book but it's mediocre and dull and inane. Can't really believe I made it to the end.
Repetitive, noisy but boring. There's a reason this band aren't very well-known. A knock-off White Stripes/Royal Blood.
What of Audioslave did not have a great singer? The answer to that question is this album.
Gick inte att lyssna på någonstans. 1
not great, too loose
Are they okay?
That this was made in 2004 makes it sooo late to the party
Forgettable, boring, and generic. Next album, please
Awful
I didn't much care for this one, it was mostly indecipherable noise. A few tracks worked alright, but the overall package was monotonous. Maybe a little harsh on this rating, but there were a few times these songs rubbed me the wrong way. Favorite track: "Getting Bright At Night"
I haven't looked it up but I'd bet good money this album was removed from later editions of the book. It should be at least a little bit my sort of thing but I'm genuinely surprised by how unremarkable I continue to find it, even after multiple listens. 1.5
Couldn’t find it yo listen to
Too hardcore for my tastes. Pass.
It's noise, You expect it to add something new but its just generic garage early 2000's noise.
noisy and not good
Music to listen to while you feed your snake. This was pretty bad. They want to be Marylin Manson but are closer to Oasis. Every instrument is routed through a bullhorn.
Angry, dissonant rock. Maybe I wasn’t in the mindset to listen, but I did not like.
Loud noise, the band. Favorite song: n/a
Not an album for me at all… honestly surprised this is on the 1001 best albums
1.5
Am I missing something? Very run of the mill
Shitty rock Album
Loud and raw Not in a good way
Interesting but not enjoyable.
All the songs sound the same and I didn’t enjoy any of them.

I have never heard of Penance Soiree by The Icarus Line nefore and have no idea what to expect here. lets give it a go. Favourite track: I couldnt pick one. Least favourite track: everything was just so pointlessly loud and yet boring at the same time. I could happily never listen to this again. Album artwork: Not a fan
This is dull. Affected vocals and very samey instrumentation. Over produced and light on ideas and melody. Not a lot to like about this posuer alley.
Sometimes I don’t understand the purpose of this project
tuneless angry noise
a wall of incoherent noise.
Nope, not needed before dying. It may have expedited my death. Noise.
I just couldn’t
какой ужасный перегруз
This was a pile of shit ⭐
More Noise Rock than Garage Rock - an angry and depressing album. Was this really one of the best albums of 2004 - I hope not.
54 minutes of my life I will never get back. We need a 0 star rating.
1.3 How can something so noisy be so boring
well...
Unmemorable 00's band so many better albums in this genre/age. Felt uncomfortably overwhelming whole album. I liked one song went to check Spotify turns out it was auto playing after the album had finished.
This album should have the 'rock' genre stricken off of it, because this does not rock in any way, shape, or form. Just depressing.
Ei uppoa
Nah
2/10
I just found the whole thing exceptionally grating. 1.5/5
Una ventosidad largaaaaa
Nope, it's not very good. Way too dissonant, nothing particularly iconic or standout, and just way too loud without any hell yeaa moments. It is kind of funny that my favorite song here is Big Sleep, because that's the same name as my favorite song from yesterday's Simple Minds album too. That coincidence was far more interesting and exciting than this album was.
I've never heard of this band. And based on the play counts on Spotify, neither has anyone else. This album is...OK? I feel the Strokes did this 00's garage/rock/punk thing better, though.
Another one that made me regret my commitment to listening to every album on the 1001 twice. The noise was brutal and sometimes it seemed like they went out of the way to make it sound miserable (ugh to the last two minutes of Seasick). A fair number of tracks could have been good if they didn't drench them in noise (e.g., On the Lash, Caviar, Spike Island, Kiss Like Lizards, White Devil), but most of it was just obnoxiously noisy. Also, didn't like the whiny sounding singer. Not much redeeming value to this album, and glad they removed it from the 1001. LEAST favorite tracks: Spit on It (apt lyric: "This sucks"), Getting Bright at Night (had some good moments, but the noise outweighed the good), Meatmaker, Virgin Velcro, Seasick.
Not for me
Not for me
What a load of shit. I tried it over three pieces. This noise is unbearable. And I say that even though I like to listen to Industrial in between. 1/5
Ugh. UGH. The worst thing about the advent of CDs is bands being like, well we gotta make hour long bore fests instead of tight cohesive albums. This sucks. It sounds like 5 other better bands.
It's alright. Track 2 is horrible a lot is mid and a couple sold songs. 6/10
This wasn’t good when it came out and it’s not good now. Derivative of other groups that did it better and just noise for noise sake.

Hard rock. Strange music.
No way I could make a full hour of this.
Awful
Pointless noise.
Meh
Kan niet op spotify
ALDI in Chains.
I think Daedalus did it on purpose
This shit isn’t raw, just half baked.
01) Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers - 5,5 02) Spit on It - 5,0 03) On the Lash - 5,0 04) Caviar - 5,0 05) Spike Island - 6,0 06) Kiss Like Lizards - 4,0 07) Getting Bright at Night - 3,0 08) Big Sleep - 4,0 09) White Devil - 4,0 10) Meatmaker - 3,0 11) Virgin Velcro - 4,0 12) Seasick - 4,0 13) Party the Baby Off - 5,0 TOTAL: 4,42 (44/100) Current ranking: 471/489 A very tiring kind of music. I was still somehow focused for the first half of the album, but the second half I was buying a washing machine on line and it just made me more nervous. The music, not the washing machine.
Why is this here?
Why?
I'm tired.
I'm all for heavy metal/rock and even some screamo, but that just didn't do it for me. 9/100
Inte dålig. Bara att jag inte tycker den hör hemma på den här listan. Har lyssnat på den tidigare men är inget jag tydligt minns och inte säker på att jag kommer komma ihåg den efter detta heller.
I couldn't face listening to this. Tried a couple of tracks and it's just noise for noise's sake.
Ass
Um, terrible.
Not for me gang. It’s on some heavy metal shit I can’t fuck with it.
Not for me
bin bim dritte song. finds uuuuhuere langwilige luute rock. 2004 usecho. s buech 2005. seit alles. ich check dases luut und hässig isch und ich appreciate die angst aber bruuuudi. das mues nöd doo sii. bin etz bi party off your baby. nai nai nai. inkreatov, tönt scheisse, höred uf striite, schribed hooks. 1.
wasnt in the mood for it, didn’t enjoy it , felt like a dated hard grunge pastiche 1
In bringing this up on Spotify I noticed no one has listened to this album, like ever, 62K listens to the first song, 52K for the third and 20K or less for the rest - and that's since 2004, 20 years. I'm going into this with a big question mark before I've even hit "play". The song titles are great. I can think of 50 albums that sound about this generic and didn't make this list. This sounds like late 90's/early 00's rock that never hit it big because it didn't deserve to. Organized messy rock is all I heard. No hooks, no great guitar work, no compelling vocals, really no groove or soul. Maybe they're fun live? This album lacked damn near everything I look for in a rock album. Try old Jane's Addiction if you want something in this vein that at least has a legitimate reason to keep listening. This was shit. 1 star for trying. No hits, no great songs, no airplay, no influence, no nothin'. I have zero clue how this made anyone's T1001 playlist unless the lead singer created it. For shits and giggles I listened to their 2013 album to see if they got any better or learned how to deliver a rock album, nope, same stuff. 12 min intro instrumental tends to put anyone off if it has no groove & no destination. Who kept giving them money to put this shit on the shelf? I bet their parents won't even go to their gigs.
Not great and I am usually a fun of hard rock and post grunge sounding music
This, to me, seems like the halfway house from Nirvana to the Kieser Chefs. A sort of stepping stone in the evolution of that branch of music. If you like, it's the missing link. It's just a shame someone found it. Not what I would choose to listen to, or hopefully, will ever again. Not completely awful, just not for me.
I decided after 1 song that this album is not for me.
I get it. The author was trying to make some picks on modern music that would hold up into the future and just had a total miss here. The icarus line really wrote music that turned out to utilize the very worst of rock at the time. 1/5
