wasn’t expecting to love this but i did
One of those bands who deserve more recognition. Pure talent
The leap that took place from yhe previous album Good Feeling to this is remarkable. Good Feeling was just that upbeat songs of youthfulness, whereas The Man Who is the sound of a band that has matured and found their groove. In my view this is one of the great albums of the nineties. Yes the singles are highlights (especially Writing to Reach You), but that should not detract from the other tracks that hold their own. I love how Slide Sliw cites other great travks of the time. And hidden tracks dont get much better than Blue Flashing Lights. They subsequently suffered from the Coldplay comparisons, but Travis and in particular this and The Invisible Band deserve far more recognition.
Right up my alley. Really enjoyed this one!
Very good album will come back
The 5est of 5s
Well done Travis!
i really liked this.
this used to be very important to me at 17. I still listen to it. Musically it’s like a warm hug. Lyrics maybe more whiny than I remember. I am opder after all.
I hear bits of Radiohead mixed with some Rufus Wainwright, Blur, Oasis? 5/5
Fantastiska! Femma
Very good
Ah perfection! Wonderful album, wonderful band.
Would listen again
fantastic, a precious discovery
I've loved Travis ever since I first heard them when I was too young to have "lied when I was 17". I'm 39 now and this still sounds fantastic. I really do think people who complain about this being boring need to be babysat by their music.
What a fantastic album maybe the poster album for the acoustic rock of the 90s that just strides the soulful and yet bobby mood.
Var búin að gleyma hvað ég elskaði Travis, nostalgían í botni
Marc's bedroom playing PS1 tea. It still holds up.
Great band I'd never heard before. Reminded me a bit of Damien Rice.
Muse, buckley and rock all in the same album whaaaaaaat
Absolutely stellar
Travis sounds like if you told AI to make a whiny Britpop album. Despite that, it’s pretty good
Mid
Test
I like it
A hidden gem that I started this project to find! Never heard of Travis before, but this was a perfect album for me today. Reminded me a lot of Radiohead, maybe a bit like the late Beatles.. really enjoyed, 5/5 will be looking more into their catalog
Perfect pop rock mix with some good memories.
I went in thinking this would totally suck, and sometimes the lyrics do suck, but I walked away from it loving the album. The songs really grasped me and spoke to me. Probably because I'm heartbroken like this guy sounds like
I just enjoyed it
Beautiful record. Was absolutely obsessed with it when it came out and still know all the words today.
This was great! Travis must be a cool guy to make such a good album.
A change from their rockier past? Well it worked, such a lovely meloncholic vive :) Faves: Driftwoord, Why Does It Always Rain On Me?
I can't be objective when it comes to Travis or this album. Been a fan of Travis since I first heard them and still love them. I loved this album when it came out and still love it. Their music just speaks to me. Favorites: Writing to Reach You, As You Are, Driftwood, Turn, Why Does It Always Rain on Me Would I listen to it again: Yes

FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN FEIN
It's a long time since I've listened to this album (or Travis in general). I had forgotten how much I liked this album. Blue Flashing Lights is a contender for my favourite closing track to an album.
Despite the cold album cover I found the music too sound warm. Hidden track at the end has cool guitar in it, worth the wait.
Precursor to the sound of Keane and Coldplay, taking elements of the 90s Britpop giants of Oasis, Radiohead and Pulp. Can't go wrong. But Travis have their own lyrical style and vocal delivery, really enjoy a lot of their work. Fav track: Turn
Love those millennial rhythms and I had missed this band in high school
The album cover reminds me of Bourne Identity that intense ass scene when he goes to stay at that house where he thinks the family is gone but then they come back and he's being hunted around the farm land by that sniper in the trees and they're running at each other in the high weeds. Damn that's an epic movie. I should probably watch it again, that scene is so tense. Anyway, this album was the perfect mood for this dreadful day (11/7/24), it met me exactly where I was at. Jesus Christ republicans are fucking stupid. It seems really unfair that a person with a quarter of a brain cell has a vote that counts equal (actually probably counts way more) than mine. At least the Celtics are good...
One of my favourites, Scotland Forever
This is my kind of album! Sad indie boy makes good acoustic music. <3
Hermoso
I've never heard of this band, and they are great! Awesome Scottish rock. I would totally buy this album.
Perfect post Brit pop. Sappy and tuneful.
Very nice album! Almost every track is a hit! I never listen it before. As for, it is even better than Oasis.
Unexpectedly brilliant album.
Very nice album
Great listen
Fuck it, reallygood
Loved this!
Perfect slice of indie pop
Very Mello perfect for a quiet night in
I really enjoyed everything about this album!
9/10 crazy good, holy shit
It's odd that a number of people on here give this a crap score due it reminding them of a bad period in their lives at the turn of the century. It reveals their age. Well this reminds me of happy days so there. However listening objectively there are a number of fairly moody anthemic ballads that have a similar structure and were fairly popular at the time. They are well played and sung and are quite enjoyable despite the current trend to slag off anything from this era. It's good, easy listening.
I gave Kanye a 3 so I gotta give these guys a 5, and then reconsider my rating system later. No, really, Travis was good listening.
This is a brilliant album from start to finish. The first time I listened to it, it was immediately on my top list. Blue Flashing Lights is one of the best hidden tracks in the history of hidden tracks. The entire album is gold from start to finish.
Definitely belongs on any list of music that defined the 90s. Was everywhere. And it's exquisite on headphones. Very slick.
Love it, reminds me of why I got this album the first time. Like pulling a warm blanket over yourself on a cold morning.
Fantastic. Need to listen to this more, but it sounds a bit like a slightly folkier version of Radiohead.
Nice and chill
Really great album. Just well above average songs from start to finish. Highlights are Writing to Reach You, Why does it always rain..., She's So Strange...could go on. 4.5/5
one of the best albums of the 90s
Brilliant
Some of my favorite hidden tracks on a CD, too bad digital doesn't exactly capture the "magic" of hidden tracks.
travel
Surprisingly good. Voice sounds like Radiohead
Another great memory from the 90’s. I first heard Travis while watching MTV’s with the “Why does it always rain on me? "video. I loved that kind of music and also loved Driftwood. I don’t think I heard the full album until a few years later but still it has a good place in my youth memories. I knew a girl who was the #1 fan of this guys, and for many years I would only see her at their gigs lol. We got together later but it wasn’t in the cards I guess, we never got to see them live while together neither. I recently learn she saw me with my girlfriend at their last gig here and it broke her hart (her words). I won’t be risking going to their next show (which is next month) because they’re hers. Hope she does go, this band is great and she deserves to be happy. I have my vinyl and my memories nevertheless. This album deserves its place on this list as it is a great time stamp and because it has great timeless songs like Slideshow, that song will always get me.
How in the heck have I never heard of this band? Dude's soothing vocals are calming, and it reminds me of the early 2000s indie rock/folk era that became super popular at the time. This album sounds timeless, though, and I ended up listening to hours of Travis. What a great find. 5/5.

A classic from the end of the 90s. Sombre and melancholy at times. This is one for a cold winter's night, wrapped up in front of the fire. Such a brilliant album that I listened to a lot, back in 1999.
This was really interesting. I liked it.
What a gorgeous album. I hadn't heard this album before and really enjoyed it, every single song was beautiful. Will revisit this multiple times in the future.
Best song is the hidden track "blue flashing light", perhaps because it has not been overplayed; the drumming is unusual at points, but not in a bad way; Fran can really sing, this is especially obvious on "as you are"; not sure why there is a song half in French?!? Extra point for being Scottish!
Brilliant
Travis é adorável.
A classic. Their 2nd album. One of the best modern British albums.
I loved this album back in the day. Nice mellow rock.
Five stars

„Writing to Reach You“ und „Why Does It Always Rain On Me?“ tragen das Ganze mit warmem, unaufgeregtem Songwriting. Kein Feuerwerk, aber ein Album, das man immer wieder gern anmacht.
‘Why Does It Always Rain on Me’ was the first song I remember singing when I was really young. Also my parents really liked Travis so maybe I’m a tad biased. But Fran Healy is a great songwriter and this album is very good.
Jaja.
very chill
Very good overall. Was A little worried when the album started just like an Oasis song, but there's plenty that is fresh and engaging while fitting nicely into the Britpop genre. Looses steam in the final quarter, but there's a lot to like for the majority of the runtime. Top tracks: The Fear, As You Are, The Last Laugh of the Laughter
Bekannter Brit-Rock mit den Hits "Why does it always rain on me" und "Driftwood". Auch der Rest ist gut hörbar. 4-5/5
so nostalgic for me - listened to this album so much growing up - the songs still hit and I still love it :)
Lots of sassy reviews from people that can’t be arsed after 20-30 albums and give up. Disclaimer: I bought this album on release. It was a welcome break from Oasis and the hangers on in the late 90s. Sure, some of the songs were massively overplayed on the radio and Fran and the boys were everywhere you looked, but I think that just showed the desire for something different that mono-brow and mono-tone Mancs.
Pretty solid 4 star album for me, yeah kind of snoozy for part of it but overall I really enjoyed it, and I liked the hidden track at the end the most actually.
3.5+/5
I enjoyed listening to this album. A bit sad but easy listening on a Sunday morning. Good vocals and well written songs make this group's catalog worth exploring.
Good album. Late 90’s/early 2000’s indie pop rock sounds. Think Oasis + Rufus Wainwright. Several very good tracks. Everything is listenable and enjoyable. Interested in checking out more from this band.
College radio throwback
I knew Why Does it always rain.. going in only but enjoyed the rest for sure.
one of the first albums i ever bought for myself! nostalgia bonus because it really isn't all that
Pleasant. liked it.
Solid overall. 4 stars for rain on me.
I thought this was lovely!
Chill
High/mid 3? Nothing I super disliked but nothing that super impressed me
I love a bit of Travis. It's a great record, his voice is underrated.
pleasant and kinda a radiohead ripoff (…will be embarrassed it’ll this came first)
90s chill brit pop...really enjoyed this one
I’ve never heard this album and liked all of this. This is why I signed up!
Good
I'm a 19 year old white girl so I'm a sucker for shit like this
Not usually into this style, but this is a surprisingly solid collection of songs.
First time hearing the full album (although I know and love the singles). I know it's not pushing the boundaries of music but I really like it. (I've added an extra star for nostalgia.)
Better than I remember (back when). I've always downgraded Travis (I compare them unfairly to contemporary musicians I liked better...). Better than 3 stars, not up to classic...4 appreciative stars.
Okay!
I really enjoyed this. So many classic singles (including my favourite, Turn) and the album tracks are good too. I have always liked Fran Healy's voice just never listened to a full album. I don't really have a lot to say about the record though. They write an excellent pop-rock hook and as a result these sings are very catchy. I imagine they have also attracted a lot of complaints from non-Brits about "more shitty britpop on the generator" despite this not being Britpop. If so, it's their loss. 4/5
"Writing to Reach You", "Driftwood", "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" y sobre todo "Turn".
I thought I remembered all of this album, but apparently not!
So nice. Seems weird that I’ve never listened to this before.
Really good though not memorable, will revisit 3.8
Less depressed Radiohead.
One of my favorites of the nineties, early 2000's
radiohead meets keane and they sound great
I can’t help but love this album. I listened to it many times in my teens and it feels like a warm hug from an old friend.
Another fun gem. When the album went into the long quiet period followed by the "hidden song" I was like "This has to be around 2000 and it was ... oh those sneaky turn of the century artist
Good
Really cool album! I'm not familiar with their other work, so maybe I'm not biased. The songs are very lucid and the album flows nicely. Might go up in the future, but a solid:
ähm das isch sochli poppigers radiohead da isch jo super?!! as you are zb suuuuper song, s tönt alles irgendwie chalt aber warm? ich han nöd würklich chöne notize mache aber bin hert positiv überrascht ha nonie ghört vo dene und sie sind huere guet, meega schöni songs! ok sie hend mi chli verlore. glaub mues es vieri geh wellsmer würkli gfalle het.
I enjoyed this.
I thought this was a pretty solid album to listen straight through. My favorite song was Driftwood and Shes So Strange. This wasnt my favorite album from Travis (12 memories) but it was still pretty good nonetheless.
Muy bueno
Bit samey, but some enjoyably melancholy vibes
The Man Who listens to Scottish rock music while drinking scotch on the rocks might be named Travis. This is a solid sophomore effort, lively with a slightly melancholy bent. I enjoyed the original enough to continue on and listen to the 20th Anniversary Edition, which was better than the original. The band, like a scotch improved with age. Best song was the second part (after the long pause) of Slide Show. (3.6*s) Will check out their singles album before the completion of this project
Its a good musician for sure. Nice album very balanced and a good mix of indie with rock. Reminded me of Radiohead and Muse on downers. Good lyrics good harmonies, good composong, great overall
This was nostalgic for me, I owned this album as a 15 year old. I sang along to the melancholy tunes.
Surprisingly quite an enjoyable listen on a gloomy morning.
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
I expected this to be a dull listen based on the cover, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It is not an album I see myself revisiting often, but it never felt like a chore to sit through. The opening track, "Writing to Reach You", sets the tone perfectly and immediately pulls you in. "The Fear" follows it up nicely with another laid-back, soft rock vibe that works well. Not everything landed for me though. "Why Does It Always Rain on Me", despite being the album’s most popular track, just does nothing for me personally. Overall, "The Man Who" by Travis is a solid, relaxed listen that exceeded my expectations, even if it did not fully win me over. 8/10
# Album Name: The Man Who # Artist: Travis # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Wow, this one has really aged. Took me back to the 90s straight away. 4 great tracks surrounded by very average stuff. Low 4 # Top Tunes: Writing to reach you / driftwood / turn / always rain on me # Would I listen to it again? yes
indie rock triste e malinconico ma piacevole
"Everyday I wake up and it's Sunday". Good thing I'm listening on a Sunday. My favourites were Writing To Reach You and Why Does It Always Rain On Me? The hidden track was one of the best ones for me, too. Also, what's up with these guys and Wonderwall? It was mentioned three times during the album.
I only knew two Travis songs before listening to this album. At first I found it a bit bland but it grew on me (like the Byrds did years ago).
Soothing
8.0/10
Slightly off-brand Radiohead. I don’t mind though. I feel like more powerful vocals could lift this to five stars.
Cool, chill alt rock
Honestly wasn’t super pumped to listen to this one but came away pleasantly surprised. I somewhat recognized a couple of the songs probably cause of my Dad. Some of it sounded a little reminiscent of Radiohead which I liked. Some of it was a bit sugary and poppy for my taste but I like his voice and I like a lot of the melodies he chose. Definitely gonna go back to it.
the green album if rivers cuomo locked the fuck in
Very pleasant
First listen I thought, this is some weak ass lameness. Second listen, wow, these are a lot of great songs. 4 is on faith that I'm going to continue growing in this one.
Cool album, I enjoyed the sound and cool to hear references to A Design For Life, Devil's Haircut, and Wonderwall in the chorus of Slide Show 7.5/10
Interesting getting this one right after the past 2 albums. These guys are also Scottish, but carry a totally different vibe from The Pogues, and have a very similar sound when compared with the Stone Roses, albeit this album coming 10 years afterwards. Very enjoyable easy listening pop rock, with that classic 2000s rock sound, with some standout songs such as The Last Laugh of Laughter, Luv, and Slide Show (with a cheeky little secret song after that long pause of silence). Kudos to Here4theSnacks for speaking out on secret songs, as I would usually just end it before letting the silence play out! Also fun fact, these guys named themselves after Travis Henderson. A character from the movie Paris, Texas, which I watched earlier this year back in Oakville with my roommates. Really, really great film. Would recommend if y'all are every looking for an oldie to watch with a great storyline, and superb cinematography. 3.5 stars rounded up, due to some of the songs really hitting for me. 7.5/10
Generally a pretty solid album - I particularly enjoyed Driftwood and Why Does It Always Rain on Me?
My sister had this on CD when I was 13 or so. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I actually enjoyed this. I don't know that I've listened to it for 20+ years. Coldplay, but better, before Coldplay existed? 3 stars for the music, plus 1 for nostalgia value.
Album with microtone, must acknowledge that this album made a great and sadness atomsphere, still UK Rock style
Very enjoyable smooth listen.
The perfect album I’d recommend to a woman if I were a performative male/male manipulator. Overall, it’s a good alt album full of love songs.
Awesome!
Good. Listened to in background. Will listen again
8/10
Surprisingly good?! I should listen to more of their music. Tracks to Track: Writing to Reach You
Very good album.
First time listening. Enjoying the mellow dreamlike quality. Three to four stars.
Very cohesive album. Mood switcher so be careful. If u are resistant to Radioheads moods ur good to go and enjoy
Who the heck is Travis? These tunes are terrific and the recording quality is crisp.
A couple songs were a little boring but I liked most of this album very much. Closer to a 4 than a 3.
I was expecting something far worse when I saw the reviews absolutely tearing into this... but for what its worth, this is one of the best 1990s British rock albums on the list so far, reminds me of Radiohead (specifically "The Bends") as well as Inspiral Carpets' discography. I like this one quite a bit. I sang "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" in primary school, and I've heard my Dad put on quite a lot of music from this album throughout the years -- so there is likely bias here, but I find the vocals and guitarwork very easy to wallow in and enjoy.
Ziemlich gut für vibe Autofahrten um abzuschalten.
Absolutely loved 'why does it always rain on me' when it came out. First time I listened to the whole album and I like it.
Melodic and varried, mostly pretty
Earnest. Straightforward. Really, really enjoyed the album, front to back, even the multiple minutes of silence on the last track before the "secret song" at the end. Incredibly consistent in quality front to back. The dialogue with and/or reference to their contemporaries in an understated way - Beck, Oasis, Manic Street Preachers - was a great detail. As a long time fan of the British music scene, Travis weren't at any risk of landing poorly for me, but I was still pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed their music, esp the songwriting and soft instrumentals. Strong 4/5.
Late 90s grunge/brit-pop is not usually my thing, but I can see the appeal with this album. It’s moody, but not in a way I typically find grating. Some really nice guitars, As You Are a standout for me
Nostalgic and harmless. Great and believable poetry that he thinks all bad things happen because he told a lie at 17.
pretty good, last song had a weird break
Nice easy listening.
It's a good album. It's not perfect, but the songs work well. I'd give it a four.
Yes, it's inoffensive alt-rock, but there's actually some pretty cool/unusual melody choices on this record that make it stand out for me. 3.5/5.0: Very Good
A little too slow and folk-y for me, personally. But a good one nonetheless! A great sonic capsule of 1999.
Mjög næs sánd. Nokkrir smellir. Hljóðið sem ég tengi við Travis. Settu benchmarkið fyrir aðra?
Bought this at the time after hearing Writing to Reach You which is still a good song. 4 singles are still good but some of the album tracks are a bit dull near the end. Overall still a decent album.
It feels a bit like Oasis and a bit like Radiohead, both bands that I like a good deal. It's also its own thing that I liked. So I enjoyed this!
Blast from the past, they were big for a while (then Coldplay rocked up).
Never heard of this group or album but this was an enjoyable listen. I think I liked most everything here except possibly the hidden track. "Writing to Reach You" makes a really good first impression. I was only able to get 2 of the 3 song references in "Slide Show" (didn't know "A Design for Life"). Anyway, here's some references to "Wonderwall."
Highlight Song/s: Driftwood This is better than I was expecting. Especially because I saw the words 'britpop' and I thought it was going to be a bunch of slop; yeah it's not exactly the greatest but it's far from slop. Lots of the songs sound so sweet and the vocals are quite Radiohead-esque (early Radiohead.) I am not fan of the 3 minutes of silence on 'Slide Show', I get hidden tracks were all the rage in the 90s but they just didn't age well.
A good album, I liked Writing To Reach You, Driftwood and Why Does It Always Rain On Me the most.
Can’t believe how many hits this band had. It somehow sounds like the worst of late 90s Radiohead, oasis and Coldplay mixed together. I enjoyed it!
I liked this a lot when it first came out but I'm not sure it's aged quite as well as I remember. British guitar music took quite a melancholy turn in the late 90s with bands like Travis and Coldplay getting big but this one is very downbeat. I still liked it and Fran Healy has a beautiful voice, the second half in particular has some really strong tracks. But I can't give it 5*, with apologies to my 12 year old self
This album only made a tiny blip in the states with the single "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" and then Travis disappeared into the sea of brit-pop bands that were no more than a flash in the pan for most of America. I, on the other hand, had this record and loved it, but admit that I've completely forgotten about it in the last 20+ years! I played the absolute shit out of this CD in my teens. This album still holds up for something that came out 26 years ago. Great song writing, performances and production, Fran's voice is smooth and dreamy. That said, this album is somehow both timeless and dated. The mix sounds full, fresh and modern, but some of the instrumentation is solidly late 90s coffee house rock. Maybe there's a bit of nostalgia influencing my rating, but I gotta give it a decent 4/5
They have some lovely melodies. I quite like their singer too. I'm just amused that I heard a few songs by them in the past week while I normally never hear them.
Nostalgia, reminds me of university! Would listen to it again
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It was like folksy Radiohead at times.
Pleasantly surprised. I like the vibe of this album. It was fun to listen to.
I hadn’t heard of this band before. I really enjoyed this album!
Soft Radiohead for pussies. Well it just so happens that I'm a bit of a pussy.
I liked this, don't hate me
3.5 rounded to 4
The bridge between the post-britpop afterglow and Coldplay’s soft lad optimism rock. But it’s a more significant epitaph; ‘The Man Who’ is the last breath of British art school as a cultural force in the UK. Killed by sky high tuition fees, the emergence of the Brit-school as a machine, and the establishment reasserting control over the cultural industries. Now, the only class difference between British pop stars (and actors, and writers) is whether they were full boarders or day boys.
Bangers
Solid
What's not to like?
I had never heard of this band or album. Surprisingly good! Quintessential 90s rock sound with clever lyrics. Will listen again.
i like his voice
....Sold the world 🌍 by Bowie Ok so Travis didn't change the world, but neither did The Eagles (Burrito Band), Elvis (White version of black music) Eminem (same as previous brackets) very few bands genuinely change things. Just sit back and enjoy
Nothing earth shattering here but I enjoyed it. I'm feeling a 3.5/5 but I'll round up because I enjoyed it more than most of the dreck that has been recommended here.
So good
very chill. very 90s
This is a tough one to rate. because I like it quite a bit, but I also think it sounds a little same-y, you know? I don't think it sounds dated, per se, but it does have a very specific 90s sound to it like Keane, or Train. Kind of an Oasis wannabe with a bit less swagger and gobs more sensitivity. I don't know. I like it. 3.5.
A lot of people calling this boring but tbh it was quite a nice chill thing and sounded great. 4 stars
Surprisingly I did Luv this album. Give this one a Turn.
Good but simple songwriting. Nostalgic to me which might affect the rating.
83/100. The Man Who by Travis is a beautifully crafted and deeply melancholic album. It explores themes of vulnerability, despair, optimism, and the struggle to find hope amid life’s ups and downs. While the instrumentation itself doesn’t always feel overtly sad, the vocals and lyrics are striking, adding an emotional weight that lingers. Fantastically done, this album made me reflect on events in my own life—a testament to its depth and impact.
A trip down memory lane! Nothing extraordinary but Fran Healy can write a catchy hook. A band that understands their strengths and produce some solid pop songs.
One of the last great pop albums of the nineties.
This is like the love child between Oasis and Muse. I’d say Driftwood is a low point on the album, at least the first low point. Turn has then returned the album back to its starting position. This is Brit rock as we know it. The Brit’s have a formula when it comes to tasty spoonfuls of music. I didn’t want to like this album because I don’t like the way the band looks and I hate someone named Travis but I’m sold on them. Choice cut: Why Does it Always Rain on Me
Really nice album. I liked it.
I went into this album with no expectation as I had no idea who they were. I have to say, I was pretty impressed. I actually think there's a lot to like about this album and for me it was the songwriting. I thought each track was unique and intricate and it formed the album very well. There's also so pretty catchy parts throughout. It really reminds me of Radiohead and I honestly thought the first song could have been a ripoff of Wonderwall with the guitar intro. I think I liked it more than most of my 3 star ratings
Accused of trying to sound like Radiohead or early Coldplay? I mean I could think of worse things. This is a solid album, Fran Healey’s vocals are lovely. Good songs with great melodies lacking the genius of RH.
Listened to this one twice, it makes very easy background listening. Standout Tracks: - Turn - Writing to Reach You - Driftwood
Another surprise.
I have this album and I still listen to it from time to time when I want something quiet. The hidden track used to always catch me, though it's not the same when you're streaming the album.
a very laid back and soothing rock album that feels very nostalgic and familiar but also really sad and lonely. great album.
4 sterne
This album had a good vibe
4.5
It’s easy to underestimate Travis. You definitely shouldn’t, though. It does very little to offend anyone but still manages to leave its solid mark.
Great album! This is the total reason I like this email reminder a day heard of them never really gave him the lesson. Definitely gonna spin this in the future.
Never really listened to this all the way through. I can see why it sold a gazillion copies. I like it. Downcast, melodic, simple songs.
Never even heard of these guys before, but I really liked this. Got some Radiohead vibes going on.
Favorite Track: Writing To Reach You
Sounds remind me of Oasis and Crowded House and the vocalist reminds me of Thom York. Some mellow radio hits from a Scottish Band... Writing To Reach You The Last of the Laughter Why Does It Always Rain On Me?
I’ve listened to this off an on for a number of years. Never been a diehard fan but a great album.
Loved it. A time capsule, and “She’s so strange” was a fab surprise!
Very nostalgic, quality overall, lots of strong tracks. Like driftwood a lot
it kinda reminded me of a radiohead album but with bearable vocals. actually had a nice time with it
Fair play I enjoyed this. Imagine being a die hard Travis fan though. I did read once that after this album they were on the way to super-stardom, but then Coldplays first album came out a year later and everyone forgot about them. What might have been. Simpsons: No
Enjoyed this more than I expected to. Probably not something I'd choose to listen to but decent nonetheless. Good monging out tunes. Why does it always rain on me is quality.
I really enjoy Travis; I feel they are a bit underrated as a band. It's such a great album, and "Driftwood" was certainly the highlight for me.
I kinda like Travis. Can’t be doing with hidden tracks though.
The Man Who? The Man Who what? Anyways, this album's pretty good. I wasn't expecting anything special, and while I wouldn't say I got something special, what I did get is still a solid album. Travis kind of reminds me of Radiohead and early Coldplay. Fortunately, I love Radiohead and early Coldplay, so while I wouldn't call this album as good as those bands, it still gives me some of the things that I love about them. The sound is where this is the most obvious. I really like this album's sound. It's just nice. The singing fits the instrumentals quite well. The writing is alright. It's not super interesting, but it doesn't have to be. My favorite song is probably "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" I listened to it after first generating the album to see if I'd like it or not, and it gave me a good first impression. Overall, this is a nice little album that does its job and is also somewhat influential on what's known as post-britpop. Interesting. Light 4/5.
The Invisible Band is my favorite album by Travis but The Man Who is the album that has more of my favorite songs on it. I don't find The Man Who to be as consistent as The Invisible Band. Really great songs on here: Writing to Reach You Driftwood Turn Why Does It Always Rain on Me? I find The Fear and As You Are to ruin some of the momentum that Writing to Reach You may have built up. Travis is very much not a loud band but it feels like once they play a good song, the next one brings it down a bit. Not necessarily in sound but it's just not as good of a song that follows. I rate this highly, despite the fact it seems I am negative on the album. It's an excellent intro to Travis, just not the best intro to Travis. Listen to The Man Who and then try the other albums.
What is it with the Scottish and making beautiful pop music? The lead singer of Travis has a very similar voice to Thom Yorke of Radiohead, and fortunately that voice is not wasted here. The music is beautiful. Just a great album to start of your morning 4/5
Travis hold a dear place in my heart
Before today, if you’d have asked me to name a Travis song, I’d only have been able to come up with Why Does It Always Rain On Me? However, it turns out that I’m really quite familiar with four different songs on this album. I never knew Turn was be them, but it’s a banger. It also strikes me how Travis were kinda enough before that was a thing. So much of the lyrics here are about being miserable, which admittedly is a theme that I tend to enjoy in music. I didn’t expect to like this album as much as I did, but it turns out to be pretty great.
One of the more enjoyable post britpop albums out there. Low 4 stars
3.5
While having this album pop up, I immediately had "Why Does It Always Rain On Me" in my ear. This says a lot - about this specific song! But "Writing To Reach You", "Driftwood", "The Last Laugh Of The Laughter" and "Turn" are good as well. Over all a well crafted, very melodic and melancholic album. Weak four stars for that. favourite: "Blue Flashing Light" (hidden track😉) 3,5
Decent.
Classic. So many enjoyable songs here. Reminds me of one of the other chill bands I used to listen to, Keane.
Nice trip down memory lane, I was always fond of this band. They also had a good collection of interesting music videos to accompany a lot of these, back when that was a thing.
I love this. Writing To Reach You was always my fave. It’s rather lovely however occasionally tips over in to the pedestrian. Stayed on for the secret track too 🏴🏴
Muy bueno Travis
I’ve never listened to this album but I definitely recognize the voice of the lead singer. Good album, was a good way to start the day. Favorites: - Writing to Reach You - The Fear - Why Does it Always Rain on Me - She’s So Strange Least Favorites: - Hidden track at the end of Slide Show **After looking up the band I realize that I probably heard a lot of their songs in One Tree Hill. I also have one of their songs “Sing” on my Alt Rock playlist.
Pretty chill, I like it
going into this i had only heard writing to reach you, but I considered it a good, enjoyable song. well, if you like that song, you'll love the entire album of songs that sound just like it. nothing here stands out in a notable way to me, though I guess why does it always rain on me is really the "big hit". good sad boy music throughout, and the last track (minus the silence) was actually really interesting. favorites: writing to reach you, driftwood, turn, why does it always rain on me, slide show
I had never heard of this band but really enjoyed the album more than I expected to. It's pretty mellow but just flows along pleasantly. Why Does It Always Rain on Me? sounds so familiar.
I had never heard of the band or the CD but this is amazing. It's exactly the sort of trebly, jangly power-pop I love, and released when I was actually paying attention to new music - total oversight on my part. They are just a full bag of delightfully melancholy melodies, kitchen-sink harmonies and endless fun tricks. Their singer isn't the best, but he gets everything he can out of his voice, and they just have a huge sound behind him. The chorus on "Trying To Reach You" has high-delay guitar, backing vocals, acoustic guitar, organ, backmasked guitar, and enough reverb on the lead vocals to choke a horse. They forgot cello, but make up for it on "Why Does It Always Rain on Me". Their sense of timing is impeccable too - witness the way he stretches his voice just a touch on the pre-chorus to "Why..". This is just short of a 5. But it's gotten me to listen to the entire rest of their discography.
Really liked it. Hadn't heard of this band before but i definitely wanna check it out more now.
I really like this genre of music. This is definitely a product of its time and it does sound slightly dated, but barely enough for me to notice or care. I was only familiar with their song "Flowers in the Window" which I love, so I was a bit disappointed none of these songs were as good. I did like the song "Turn," though.
3.75, better than I remembered
Enjoyed this one. Soft melancholy rock. Reminded me a little of early Coldplay kinda sound. Maybe a little Script sound too? Though i think these guys did it first. Travis is a dumb name for a band though.
Wonderful! New to me.
A really pleasant late 90's collection. Hidden gem to me
A bit derivative, with a bit of Coldplay, a dollop of Oasis, and a massive bucket of Radiohead. Then we get Why Does It Always Rain On Me? That doesn't sound like anyone else, it just sounds memorable. I read a few negative reviews and was expecting something repetitive. Nuh uh! The atmosphere is sad lad, but it's quite intriguing.
Good stuff. Never listened to them before, glad to have more stuff to look forward to
Singer reminded me a little bit of Dave Grohl? A nice little alt album
01) Writing To Reach You - 9,0 02) The Fear - 8,5 03) As You Are - 8,0 04) Driftwood - 8,0 05) The Last Laugh of the Laughter - 7,5 06) Turn - 9,0 07) Why Does It Always Rain on Me? - 10,0 08) Luv - 7,5 09) She's So Strange - 7,5 10) Slide Show - 7,5 11) Blue Flashing Light - 8,5 TOTAL: 8,27 (83/100) Current ranking: 58/190 The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. You're welcome. This was popular when I was young, maybe that's why I get sentimental every time "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" starts. They had a couple of decent songs, several successful albums, including this one. Nothing revolutionary, but pleasant to listen to.
Timeless
You know, assumed I wouldn't like this too much due to the year of release, but I vibed with it pretty good. Gave me Radiohead energy but without the annoying parts of Radiohead that I don't like (yeah it's Yorke's voice sorry not sorry)
7/10. Thought it was a slow start but ended up being very good. Put 4 songs on the playlist.
A bit ahead of its time in a way. Sounded like mid-2000s indie. I enjoyed it, it’s my jam.
This whole album sounds like the part of an early 2000’s Rom-Com when the falling out happens. So they show a montage of them living separate lives. That’s where I’m currently at in life so this shit hit me directly 😂
me re copó je 8/10
One of those albums where u go in not expecting much but are pleasantly surprised
Very solid album. Can't even make the wonderwall joke bc they did twice. But I think I liked them more. Like thought it would just be sad boi music but there were some bangers. Fan songs turn, the last laugh of laughter, driftwood. Slideshow is a mood tho
I mean, I wanted to hate it, but it's actually, in hindsight, a bunch of really well put together sad songs. Very trad, no innovation, but the songs are tight and they are pretty great.
I really loved this album idk why it got bad reviews??? The first song is so good 😭
This and radiohead can coexist!! Musicbros stay mad
Really stands up well. Thank you Zane Lowe (discovered this via M2 on MTV in mid 1999 - Driftwood, then Why Does It Always Rain on me.)
Very Nice. I'm can't be sure I've not heard it before, or were there just a lot of singles? I used to love Driftwood & Fran Healy actually. Go on then, a 4.
Blind album and artist. I liked the slower indie rock more than I thought for sure. I do understand the radiohead vibes.
I downloaded them from Napster and used to play along badly on my dad's old guitar. First gig as well at the SECC. Doves supporting.
I loke this album, especially "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?"
Honestly, I really enjoyed this one! I was worried that it was going to be a Mumford & Sons style folky album, based on the album cover and name of the album, so I was pleasantly surprised when it was a lot more rock/pop. I'd listen again!
Always upvote Travis
Sounds like rain in Britain but you are walking around forlornly in your rain jacket watching couples having dinner inside restaurants. This list seems to love British bands. Not sure if you need to hear it before you die as it’s quite derivative. Better to listen to Radiohead’s The Bends. In saying that I did enjoy it though.
Really good album.
bastante bien
Earworm for everytime it rains since 1999. Travis ist awesome for melancholic lightrock feelings.
Britpop, indie, male, mid, carefully arranged with strings, sometimes too much, but classic poprock album, with tendencies to Radioheadesk parts. Puts a wide smile on my face, listened to this one very often 25y ago, borrowed it from a girl i liked, burned it on a ROM, but threw it away some moves possibly. Remembered many arrangements and lyrics. Back in the days, liked the shy songs more than the big ones- still the same :)
