It has some all-time great Christmas songs on it, but feels especially grimy with Spector's name all over it. It's clearly just another way of downplaying the acts and performers he used, in order to keep them reliant on him.

Anyways, all Phil Spector jokes aside, A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector is all and all, a pretty good Christmas album. The vocals from every band in this album did a really good job singing. I did feel that the drums were utilized a little too heavily. Aside from that slight blunder. I feel that these songs are really iconic for a reason. Best Song: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) Worst Song: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Edit: Phil Spector is a terrible human, but I love Christmas music, and listening to this again around the holidays made me realize how good it is. If there’s going to be a Christmas album on the list, I suppose this would be the one. Lots of classics, and it’s enjoyable, just not sure it needs to be here. But it’s fun that I got this on Christmas!

Great X-Mas Album! I only rate the music so 4Star as a X-Mas Album it works perfect with all those different Artists and Build Up like a good Playlist. Dont get booring and easy playable Album during Christmas.
Probably one of the greatest Christmas albums ever made, but therein is the problem, it's a Christmas album. There's only about a 1 month period you're going to listen to it (also, Phil Spector's message on the last track has NOT aged well). But, the recordings are iconic, the talent is amazing, and it's not truly Christmas season until you hear Darlene Love belting out Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).

have left this to the wayside a bit so fairly sure this was assigned to me very close to christmas (not sure if that's done on purpose) so annoyed with myself that I didn't listen then I didn't realise all these songs were released like this we listened to Annie Lennox's christmas album instead and it sucked!! But yea all of these songs are classics and are amazing and that piece of shit Phil Spector can rot in hell for eternity!!! :)
The 1001 site had the nice idea of making this album a Christmas day selection (I suspect for many of us). The problem is that these aren't particularly good holiday songs, even if you account for Spector's famous "Wall of Sound".

N/A I mean, it's a Christmas album. It only works a particular time of the year, and God knows why it's here. Lovely songs of course, we all know them. But including this on a "1,000 albums" list is kind of cheating. It's like putting the TV static channel on "Top TV Shows" list because everyone's seen it at a particular time. Not the best analogy, but you get what I'm saying.

Welp, separating the art from the artist once again. Quite possibly the best Christmas album of all-time and it has what I would consider to be the best or close to the best version of several Christmas songs. Fantastic album and a must-listen for anyone, even if you are kind of neutral on Christmas music like I am.

How appropriate for this time of year (Christmas if you couldn't tell), A Christmas Gift For You is a decent compilation album that has the majority of the Christmas classics, including White Christmas, Santa Clause Is Coming To Town and Winter Wonderland. Although Phil Spector is not really one to idolise, there are none actually sung by Spector himself, just a thank you track to background music of Silent Night. There were only a couple of Christmas tunes I hadn't heard of that didn't manage to catch on to be a part of regular Christmas rotation. Best: Santa Clause Is Coming To Town Worst: Silent Night 3.5 stars

I can name several other Christmas albums that are musts over this and they all don't have munk in the name I swear. It does put you in the spirit though but won't be an annual must for me...2.1stars cause I'm feeling grinchy.
A nice assembly of standard Christmas songs everyone knows. It's fine but nothing special for me when there are a million other versions of every holiday song. Darlene Love is the real star here. There's really no reason for me to ever listen to this. I guess Phil Spector gets credited for the production or putting it together? 1.00 stars

I listen to this every Christmas and its sound is definitely part of my Christmas, despite the controversies around the man himself. Darlene Love is an amazing artist, and Walking in a Winter Wonderland has long been one of my favourite Christmas songs. I also love The Ronettes' version of Sleigh Ride.
Never been a fan of the Wall of Sound, and found it all a bit samey and shouty. Bah humbug.

As far as Christmas albums goes this one was very enjoyable. Phil spectors iconic "wall of sound" worked surprisingly well for music that can be bare bones with a focus on the vocals. I'm not overly huge on Christmas albums, I tend to put on random music for a few days a year, but I think this is one I'll come back to! Fav songs: sleigh ride, Christmas (baby please come home)
It's a great Christmas album but I can't give an album that has a shelf life of like, 2 weeks a year more than a 3, even if it has one of the best Christmas songs of all time on it.

- Normalerweise spielt die Produktion und Tonqualität für mich NIE eine bedeutende Rolle. Ich finde häufig gehört das einfach zum Gesamtprodukt dazu und ist nicht selten ein Zeugnis seiner Zeit. Wenn man jedoch mit so vielen Produktionen der gleichen Songs konfrontiert wird, fällt es doch stark auf, dass diese Platte (offensichtlich) nicht mithalten kann. Auch nicht nicht "Konkurrenz" seiner Zeit wie Sinatra. - Darüber hinaus finde ich die Arrangements der bekannten Klassiker leider nicht so gelungen wie auf vieeelen anderen Alben - Man kann nicht leugnen, dass die gesamte Platte einen gewissen Charme versprüht - der kann jedoch nicht über den Rest hinwegretten. - Außerdem: Es ist und bleibt ein Weihnachtsalbum; ich bin mir nicht sicher, wie toll sowas bei mir überhaupt abschneiden kann. 2/5

Välproducerad julmusik. Kan på rak arm inte komma på nån bättre julskiva. Men genren har ju sina begränsningar. Det är ju svårt att känna särskilt starkt för nån av låtarna. Som bakgrundsmusik är det en femma. Men som riktig musik en trea.

This is an album I can appreciate for the production. I mean it’s a collection of classic Christmas songs, so it’s not really gonna be bad. No love no hate. But I did try to pay attention for the wall of sound and I can say it’s there. The layers of instruments, percussion and even backing vocals make a very full sound. It’s cool to hear how multiple instruments overlayed can create a unique sound. It lead my down a rabbit hole of researching the wall of sound technique. Probably worth a relisten with high quality headphones

A must have for the vinyl collection. We’ve been listening to this one several times a week lately to get into the holiday spirit. Easily my favorite murder-adjacent Christmas album. The monologue at the end hasn’t aged well, but otherwise this is solid gold. Plus it’s basically the soundtrack to Goodfellas, so bonus points there as well. A great way to celebrate the season.

I loved this album and it dropped at just the right time. He may have a thing for gunplay and occasionally accidentally murder romantic partners, despite this he certainly knows how to produce a record. What an awful human being. My three stars are for the performers on this album.

I’m guessing the generator is not so random after all 😉 I think this is the only compilation style album we’ve seen so far on this challenge? Putting aside for a moment that Phil Spector was an abusive murdering piece of sh*t - this has some fun and frivolous holiday music with some excellent 60s vibes! Not the type of music I tend to listen to at Christmas (many years of being indoctrinated has left me a very traditional carols, hymns and Handel’s messiah sort of gal - I wish I was cool & hip, but alas I am not!) But I’ll be adding this one into the Xmas mix for next year - it certainly beats the music my S.O. plays at Christmas! It would be 4 stars (and I’m sorry to all the fabulous musicians!!!) but minus a star for Spector being a bit of a c**t

Christmas is stressful, frantic, loud and chaotic. Things can become repetitive yet there are absolutes that cannot be questioned. It gives me a headache. As does this album all in one go.
Phil Spector was undoubtedly a great music producer, but also seems to have been a crappy human being. Long before he killed Lana Clarkson, he imprisoned his wife for two years and sexually assaulted at least one of his children, allegedly. Still, the music on this album is very good and we shouldn't hold the producer's indiscretions against the musician's performance.
The random generator randomly generated a Christmas album on Christmas? Seems fishy. But thank god for it, because I hate Christmas music outside of Christmas. I will admit that this album is infectious, no matter how overplayed the individual songs are. And you gotta love Darlene Love.
Christmas albums are low hanging fruits. They are okay, but they are there only to fulfill one single objective. All artists have one album, everybody likes them because it's always the same damn songs. Let's be real here, there's a factor of execution; but it doesn't require any originality or effort. I guess this album is okay, it has all the classics performed by several artists. It is a good compilation, but I can not give it a high rating. Expected Marc rating: 3

Honestly my favorite Christmas album
I think I recognized the version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town. The rest were unfamiliar, though the general sound was familiar. On the whole, this felt like an old-timey album and I have no real desire to hear it again.
If I'm listening to Christmas music, this is the sort of music I prefer: Upbeat, secular, and mid-century. Tons of recognizable songs from other Christmas mixes here, so pretty 5-stsr record... though I'm subtracting a star for Spector, y'know, killing someone.

I was surprised to learn I had heard almost every one of these songs almost every year, and I love these versions, but I never listened to this full album. What a classic sound, beautiful arrangements, and perfect execution. This will be in rotation every Christmas going forward!
Kind of bland Christmas music, all similar sounding and rather noisy. Also tarnished by reading more about Phil Spector and his messed up life and life choices. I think the Ronettes stood out as the best of this album. I absolutely love Christmas music and question the value or importance of this album when compared to many, many others of supreme quality (see Nat King Cole specifically). Two stars.

I dreaded listening to this because of a lifelong detestation of christmas music, but it was surprisingly good. I appreciated, but will never return. Favorite moment has got to be during the acknowledgments at the end, when Phil says: 'as of this moment I am very proud of all the contributors' which to me implies a future possibility of no longer being proud of them. Not how I would have done it but you do you Phil.

I thought I'd listened to most christmas music. Turns out I had, and this album has an unfair proportion of good ones.
Come on….60s Christmas music is what I was brought up on. This along with the older artist like Burl Ives, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, etc, that is what Christmas sounds like.
I love the Ronettes. I HATE Christmas music. And Phil Spector is literally a murderer.
Didn’t think a Christmas album could be much more than overly-sentimental schlock, but this is some genuine fun. Will become an annual holiday listen for sure.

I knew some of the songs but had never listened to the album itself. The closing track with the spoken word stuff is the only one I'd be likely to skip on a second listen. The rest of the tracks are a lot of fun.

It’s understandable that David Letterman had Darlene Love on his show to perform Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) every year for 28 years. It’s one of the greatest songs of all time! Christmas or otherwise.

It's refreshing to hear Christmas songs from 60s girl groups rather than old crooners, in my opinion. Well performed and produced with even the songs I typically don't care for are enjoyable.
Contrary to what someone else wrote, yes I can hate on it. It’s a Christmas album, and they are awful, and this being an early one it’s not even saved by having Fairytale of New York on it which is the ONLY Christmas song I will tolerate.

I bit the bullet and listened to this at 6am after my usual bout of insomnia. So many classic Christmas Standards on here produced by a musical genius. I never realised all these were released on a single album and that Phil Spector was behind them all. What's not to like? Maybe being murdered by said musical genius. A high 4.
I did listen to this after Christmas and wasn't feeling very Christmassy. But it just didn't seem that good or interesting.
Pretty much a perfect Christmas record. Listened to this on the way to my parents’ place for the holiday and it hit the spot. I almost got knocked down to 4 because of the weird Phil Spector spoken word thank you at the end, but ultimately this record is wholly redeemed.

nice, an album full of classic christmas songs. yes, phil spector is the worst, but he only appears at the end of the album so it's easier to listen to these other songs as they are. some true classic versions of songs here, sleigh ride being my favorite. probably not going to listen to this year-round and again, there is the whole specter of spector lingering over this, so... three stars? favorites: white christmas, santa claus is coming to town, sleigh ride, christmas baby please come home

BL: Spector is arguably the best producer of all time, and this compilation of his takes on some Christmas classics will be interesting to hear, even if I don’t particularly like Christmas music. AL: fascinating album. You just know this solidified Spector as one of music productions greats. In terms of the music. I hate Christmas music, so it was a hard listen. There is one song on here I do love though which is so good it subverts my hatred for Christmas music, “Baby Please Come Home” by Darlene Love. What a soulful and beautiful track. I fucking LOVE Christmas music. I know most musicians hate it (and probably for good reason) but there's just something about it that gets me every time. When I was younger, I was never really interested in the hits from this album when they'd come on the radio. It wasn't until I listened to this with headphones that I could tell the huge power behind the procuction. And any album that originates Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) has to be an easy 5 stars.

A Christmas album packed with some of the most popular Christmas songs. There are quite a few of these song versions that are still played a lot on radio today, like 'Sleigh Ride', 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" etc, so by those measurements it must be regarded as a success. Still, there are quite a few Christmas songs I listen to that are not on this particular album. And for some reason I feel that Christmas music plays in a different league than "regular" music, so it's hard for me to compare this to ordinary albums. I think a dead on 3 feels reasonable.
Nice that this is "randomly" generated on Christmas day. It's a good Christmas album with "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" being my favourite. Merry Christmas!

So that's a Christmas music album. It's properly christmasy and doesn't make my ears bleed, so it's good. I can probably listen to it once a year.
As far as Christmas albums go, it's certainly tolerable. Listening to this a couple days after Christmas is not as tolerable. Not a slight on the album, just an unfortunate byproduct of being sick of Christmas music a few weeks ago. For Phil Spector being Phil Spector, and having to hear this after Christmas, I'm tempted to give it a 2 as I don't rate based on objectivity, I rate on how an album makes me feel, and this was mostly anger. On the real actually a pretty solid collection of Chrissy tracks. Solid 3/5 Fav track: Marshmallow Man or I saw Mommy kissing Santa

Equal parts terrifying and fun - some classic and unadulterated Christmas cheer mixed with whatever energy it is that Phil Spector emits. Honestly this is a pretty decent record overall, and an easy one to put on over the holidays. Despite the spoken word elements, the singalongs are all a pretty good time. Fave track: Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)
I guess you could do worse for Christmas music but you could also not listen to Christmas music by choice. Especially on or around Christmas where you will frequently hear it not by choice.

It's fine as Christmas albums go... but there's far too many generic Christmas songs out there and I don't need to spend 1 month every year being bombarded with them. I don't listen to sickly sweet songs filled with sleigh bells the rest of the year... because it's not a good sound. The talking at the end was cringey and unnecessary. Waiting until January to listen to it probably didn't help.
Nice generic Christmas album - probably would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't listening to it on Jan 8th...

Our host’s neat trick in saving this for Christmas Day has been a welcome one, sticking our household and maybe yours, Si, in this cheerful, compressed Groundhog Day. I don’t have the stomach to unpick Spector’s depredations, which would anyway do a disservice to those who actually played and sang these songs. This is a blast of cheer, and I’m surprised it lasted the day here, testament to its honing for mid-distance listening at varying levels of festive exhaustion.
I guess you have to grudgingly admire the craft, despite me preferring instead to hear a collection of TV themes and/or advertising jingles for variety at least at this point. Please never again... [edit - got it again, thanks Mark! Merry Xmas]
I guess it's Christmas in July. I'm not a fan of holiday music in general, but this one has some goodies... rock and roll holiday... If I were to hear one of these during the holiday, I wouldn't be too pissed. Not bad.

The perfect, classic Christmas album. I love this record and it’s in heavy rotation every year.
What an interesting project! It’s like Brian Wilson and John Hughes hired Chris Colombus and all of Motown to make a rom com musical about Christmas and they all went to Disney World with 1000 musicians and hit record. A couple of tracks on here are absolute classics, namely The Ronettes’ Sleigh Ride and Darlene Love’s Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).
This was nice! Several of these are my go-to versions of their respective songs already, I like the sound of 60s Xmas music especially.

A festive album, which although was released 60 years ago, it still has a number of staple christmas classics on it. Many of the tracks have been re-recorded to a better standard than this release, but they still manage to evoke that christmas warth inside.
I'll admit, overexposure & my growing cynicism (& possibly a lack of snow this year) have dimmed my enjoyment of the Christmas canon quite a bit, but this is still a damn good Christmas album. favs: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), Sleigh Ride, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Here Comes Santa Claus, Winter Wonderland worst: Silent Night sidenote: may Ronnie Spector forever Rest in Peace & may Phil Spector forever Rot in Pieces.

It’s a Christmas album, it’s only viable 4 weeks of the year. This should be on the list of albums of songs you’ll hear a 1001 times before you die.
I wish I had a sob story to justify not reviewing this earlier, but initially I didn't listen to this because I didn't want to be a Grinch, and then I just forgot. Well, it's lunar new year now, close enough. It's easy to listen to when it's not christmas. Actually, someone should listen to this album during every holiday and make a top-10 list of holidays this album goes best with.
Theres one thing I hate more than christmas music and it's the idea of listening to christmas music in July if I dont bite the bullet and do it now, no matter how much I really want to push this forward. Unfortunately I am unable to separate my dislike for christmas music away from the album at hand so that I am able to listen to it objectively but even when I try, this doesnt even register on the chart of listenable music.
Sounds like a Phil Spector album
This is arguably the best Christmas album of all time! It seems at the time it wasn't well received (possibly because it was released on Nov 22, 1963 - the same day as President Kennedy was assassinated). Re-released on Apple Records in the 70's it started to pick up. Another push for this album is the number of mainstream stars who covered these songs (Springsteen, U2, Bublé) basing their versions on these Phil Spector arrangements. The album has also been cited by Brian Wilson as his favorite album of all time. This is Phil Spector and the Wrecking Crew at their peak. Love this album. The one song I never get tired of is Darlene Love's Christmas Baby Please Come Home. Favorite Songs: Sleigh Ride, Frosty, Winter Wonderland, Christmas Baby Please Come Home.
No notes, best Christmas album. Only Darlene Love/Spector can make me bop to Marshmallow World instead of skipping it.
