Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Great relisten! Noisy shoegaze in the "my vacuum cleaner is malfunctioning" style is getting up there for me. What really brings it out is getting absorbed enough into the noisy, all-consuming atmosphere that you can start to pick out the really pretty melodies buried underneath.
Another situation where I judged an album too quickly based on the cover and band name and was actually pleasantly surprised.
I didn't know what i was epecting - but loud noise was generally my first thoughts. As i've learned through this project. NEVER EVER judge a record by it's cover. Pretty good actually. Get some pixies vibes here. Ok - take it back. Just overall really f'n good. Wow - had no idea what I was walking into. People calling this a top 25 album of all-time is some high praise. Need to give it a re-listen to give it that sort of acclaim
A great listen every time I come back to it, which is truly often! Looks how it sounds, which is totally entrancing!
Always struggled with trying to "get" mbv but nowadays I just put it on and enjoy. Don't know if I get it but it's weird and nice!
"When You Sleep" was my favorite..
It feels so strange to realize that My Bloody Valentine have put out only three studio albums. Like, legit, before today, I had no idea that M B V was their **third** album. The way I'd always heard people gush over this band, I'd always figured they had a much larger output I'd just never heard about before going on hiatus. But, no: they released LOVELESS, and then besides a few EPs and a live album they didn't really put out much of anything else until M B V. For years, this was their only musical statement to the world. Well, the only one that really mattered, anyway — imagine my surprise to also find out that this was their **second** album. And until today, well, it was one of those statements where I nodded and accepted its importance, but I couldn't tell you **why** it was so important. Y'know, it was one of those "Oh, hey, **that** album cover" albums. Although unlike, say, FEVER TO TELL or whatever that Lemonheads album was called, I actually had my reasons for never getting around to it until now. Simply put: it's my old enemy shoegaze again. I've made it no secret how much disdain I have for the genre — in fact, it was the focus of my review of/babble about M B V. Back then, it was tied for my worst rated genre with a 3.17, and the review would ultimately push it down further with a 3.14. These days, meanwhile, it still holds second place, though it's managed to rise up to a more respectable 3.25. And, y'know, I'll be honest: looking at my bottom three, I don't think world music should be my worst-rated. That 3.14 isn't fair; it's only because Koffi Owlede sucks shit as a person... And for that matter, to be completely 100, I don't think shoegaze should be my absolute worst-rated, either. Like, I'm not gonna front and say that I've loved everything I've heard from this genre, but after this album, I hafta wonder if I had been listening to it all wrong. I mean, my preconception of shoegaze has always been that it's a snobby genre; something that my strawman idea of a pretentious music critic would push as the greatest thing **EVAR**, which I couldn't imagine the public (or the public I could view from my bubble, anyway) honestly enjoying. I've also previously put it on the same level as another genre I've said to hate (post-punk) and slapped it with the same opinion: that I "don't think it's good just because it's unappealing on purpose." And, y'know, maybe I've just been getting the wrong albums... Come to think of it, I might just be letting one album color my perception of the entire genre. After all, the first post-punk album my group got METAL BOX, and it really hasn't gotten better for me since. Elsewhere, it wasn't the **first** shoegaze album my group got, but my group got PSYCHOCANDY by The Jesus And Mary Chain, and I hated that so much that it might've scared me towards any other shoegaze album we've gotten. Enough so, in fact, that when the randomizer tossed us LOVELESS, it took me a second to remember that I didn't actually hate M B V. So I think I wanna stop hating shoegaze, I need a new album to define it by. I mean, PSYCHOCANDY was never a good one in the first place; I tend to think of it more as "noise rock" than as "shoegaze." And if I'm gonna let any album define shoegaze for me, then, hey, why not the single most famous entry in its genre? It's an obvious choice, sure, but I can't imagine that it's this famous for absolutely no reason, y'know? Now, to actually start talking about this dang album, 600-some words in... Well, my initial reaction is that I thought I knew what to expect. After all, I liked M B V, and that unlocked once I learned to think of it as "ambient music for metalheads." This is a few decades earlier, but I didn't have much reason to expect anything else, right? This would be my confirmation that that was what shoegaze is. And yet... Y'know, "ambient music" is still a factor in this, I figure. It still does strike me that way, and I will say that I do still prefer it with electronics over guitars. But it's not **just** that — and in fact, I wouldn't even describe this album as "ambient music for metalheads." If I had to go with anything, well, I think the better description is "dream pop grunge." Right? I mean, the music has the loud guitars and edge of grunge, but with the way the guitar is being played and with how the vocals are mixed so far back and are normally so high in register, everything gets smoothed out into this dreamlike atmosphere. The guitar technique that was used on this album is called "glide guitar," and that's an apt name for it, 'coz "gliding" is how you feel listening to it. Like, understanding this album in the same context I do The Flaming Lips or I have Cocteau Twins, suddenly everything makes sense. And of course for me it can't compete in that realm; it's no SOFT BULLETIN or YOSHIMI... But as its own thing — as shoegaze — this is the most I've liked an album in this lane with no caveats. Y'know, it's not like when I listen an album I hafta go "Well, the post-punk part isn't my **favorite** part. Here, it is, and that's such a milestone. Heck, this album probably helps me better understand "vibes" music, too. I've seen people knock the album for its repetitiveness, and for how unintelligible the vocals are, and those aren't not valid, but to me they're both features. This is where the "ambient music" part comes back in, 'coz it's all about connecting with the vibe. If you can tune in and let your mind float free, well, dang, it's some great shit. But then on top of how vibey it is, it still has some good riffs and melody lines? That was the thing that especially surprised me about this album, particularly on "I Only Said", which I ended up listening to twice by accident. Heck if I cared, though: there was this one line on there that was, ah, so good, and it carried me clear through to the other side. So that's just it then, eh? I like shoegaze now? Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves here; I'm still not crazy for the genre. Don't go thinking this is a new top five album for me or anything like that, y'know? And besides, a stinker will always be a stinker, no matter how much I like or understand a genre. But if nothing else, I'll probably have an easier time now understanding and enjoying the genre than I did before. And the next time one pops up, I doubt I'll be as quick to dread it as I have others. And, hey, this is all good news for post-punk, too. After all, if I can learn to enjoy the genre currently rated worse than it as I'm writing, there might just be an album out there that'll cause post-punk to click with me as well. I kinda doubt it, 'coz it really does seem like it's unironically a snobby genre, but, hey, you never know what the future holds. As for My Bloody Valentine, meanwhile... Yeah, if you're gonna have only one musical statement that matters, this is a pretty good one to have.
Really awesome, soundscapes they create are something else. A bit repetitive for casual listening
Clearly a very important album and even 30+ years later there's not much else that sounds like Loveless. Although I'm not really into dreampop so maybe that's why. They were clearly doing incredible things and the wall of sound they produce essentially with just guitars and effects is very striking Not quite 5* as I don't know if I fully enjoy listening to it given lack of melody and structure. But I appreciate how innovative it is
Melodic and washed in a bath of fuzz! Kind of cool when in the right mood. I can see that this influenced The Smashing Pumpkins a lot
i like 👍
8.5/10 I think I listened to this about 29 years afot, and it wasn’t for me. This time I really liked it. Ugly beautiful music. Loud and discordant but subtle and pretty. Amazing layers of production that hit you like a train. Woozy vocals. Overall an overwhelming experience, like nothing else. Can really hear its influence on things since - Smashing Pumpkins for sure. Some of it was slightly too loud and aggressive, which keeps it from that perfect 5. Best: I Only Said
3,5 ster.
I have listened to this on and off since the 90s. It definitely rewards repeated listens and good headphones and is generally best enjoyed loud. Can sound a little sad emo shoegazy, because it is
Why this is one of the top rated albums on Rate Your Music has always been beyond me. Indeed, it's the exact ranking that reminds you that the people using that website are not really representative of music consumers more generally. That being said, as much as I wanted to dislike this album, it's a great listen. Didn't understand a word they said, but I guess that's the point. Also, Kevin Shields is a Cabo lad, so has to get some credit for that (g'wan Ireland...) when you sleep, come in alone, soon are my favourites.
I’ve been trying to get into this album since 2017 and it has been a struggle. But Only Shallow just kept getting better and better over the years, and as my brain continued developing, the rest of the songs slowly sounded less and less cacophonous. I expected to remain a contrarian Loveless hater when this came up on the list, ready to slap a 2 on it and dip, but I can’t. This music seems like it wasn’t even made by people, but by some sort of entity we don’t really know about. Yet the emotions somehow conveyed through each song remove any doubt over its humanity: To Here Knows When sounds like lying on a sunny spot on the floor on a Saturday and faintly hearing people in the other room; When You Sleep sounds like the part of a pregame where all the lights are still on and everyone’s just starting to get tipsy and excited for what’s to come, but knows they aren’t ready to leave the friendly, comfortable atmosphere yet; I Only Said sounds like driving home with the windows down at night; Come In Alone sounds like sitting on a couch after a hot and sweaty day out and feeling a fan on your skin; Sometimes sounds like kissing someone for the first time. I have to face it: this is a good album. It will probably be a 5 in a year at this rate
I mean it’s a classic, you can’t argue with that. Vacuum cleaner whir shoegaze down bad noise never sounded so good before or after this
Kevin Shields sounds like a twat I did think my neighbour was drilling but turned out to just be the other half of this sound it is good though 90s irish english shoegaze indie
Love how this album makes me feel and the atmosphere it creates. Quite cohesive as a body of work which I appreciate too. I didn’t know much about the group until recently even though I’ve heard of them here and there but my goodness, can’t believe I wasn’t listening to this properly before. Can see why it’s a classic for sure
Hypnotic and unique. I love a good wall of sound style. Would listen again and maybe rate a 5 over time.
Partially rating it based on the memory of falling to sleep to certain songs that Ewan was playing on the way back from the Squamish hike.
Too good to be true. Its heavenly brooo
I think it's a little better than I originally gave it credit for. Very good music. Sounds good just a little repetitive maybe?
Eher churz willi ufhole mun aber damn My Bloody Valentine is making My Bloody Valenday. Mal wider extraordinär us de wüestefinke gazed worde. Vier Bloody Valenpoints
I’ve never heard of them before but I’ve seen the cheesy horror movie by the same name. I went in with low expectations and ended up enjoying the album.
For what it is, it’s excellent. Angsty, moody, dynamic, meshing that 90s alt sound with goth rock sensibilities.
Quite good for the genre, I think. Closer to 3.5 but I think it deserves the 4.
These guys build soundscapes with layered noise and woozy, pitch-bending guitar. It shouldn't work but hey, it does! And Billy Corgan noticed it does as he ripped off that sound with Smashing Pumpkins. 4.2
Great album. It's been in my larger rotation for a long time.
If you like shoegaze, this is it. I really like this album. I can't pick out any one specific song, the whole thing flows really well and plays better as a whole. But I love the instrumentation, the super saturated guitars, even the somewhat incoherent lyrics. I particularly like the songs with Bilinda Butcher on vocals, but I'm a sucker for a rock band with a female vocalist. I can certainly see how this album inspired a ton of kids to pick up instruments in the early 90s because this was unlike anything they had heard before. I dig this album and would definitely buy it at the record shop and play it fairly regularly. Maybe not 5 stars from me but a solid 4/5.
Recorded in mono and the second loudest live band ever... My Bloody Valentine has an interesting story, complicated members etc. By the way Loveless was a band too. The LP is a sonic trip with the bending of sound, the buried vocals and really needs to be listen in it's entirety. Did not know this album existed. Liked: blown a wish, come in alone, and I could see "soon" released as a single. Xanthan, Mr. Gum
So vibey, I loved it
#466. A pleasing noise 4/5: brilliant
I would have loved this in high school
Fan-bloody-marvellous. It is, IMHO, the absolute pinnacle of MBV. Shoegaze at its fiercest, its most emotive and its most melodic. They manage to avoid the trap of just falling into walls of feedback, which is nice, and not something that they always do. It's one that I just immediately want on record.
The issue with this record is the pacing and tracking. These go hand in hand of course. Why the cosmic black whole right in the middle of side A? I feel as thought this looses a lot of people. Also, I love a strong closer, but 'soon' should've closed said side A. Still a fantastic sounds cape and highly influential album, just not perfect
I feel like I need to be in the right mood to enjoy this, but it's fantastic if you get hooked in. Absolutely beautifully put together, perfectly balanced unmusical noise.
great album highlights: to here knows when, when you sleep, soon
An example of noise rock/dreamy rock I can get behind, the muffled sound pairs well with the vocals and it's not too messy for it to be unpleasant. Also, album cover perfectly represents the record.
This had good vibes. Would listen again.
I have tried many times to convince myself that this is the greatest record ever made. I really like it. The soundscapes are wonderful. There is a great mood and theme throughout. Somehow I just can’t focus enough on the lyrics to get me across the line. I’ve listened on AirPods. I’ve listened on small speakers. I’ve listened on my full stereo system. Just can’t seem to get the emotional response to put it over the top. I know that sounds strange but it’s how it hit me. I do see how this can be a 5 for many people. Just not me.
Fuzzy sounding excellence
Feels suffocating
A very special album that deserves many stars, but still doesn't hit me personally. Icons of shoegaze though.
This is a very good album but I struggle to fully enjoy it sometimes because of the weird fuzzy sound it has... it's off, but not too intrusive to make it not an amazing listening experience.
Deep love for this record.
Noise in a good way. Honestly don't think I've heard anything from MBV that I don't love
Started off indifferent but came to really like it. 3.75
A lush soundscape with plenty of cool sounds. The lyrics are unintelligeble and the songs flow into one another after a while. But the melancholic vibe just keeps sticking.
4.5. Grungy post rock - loved it!
8/10 gets a little same with the noise but still has some really powerful songs
It sounds like a bad acid trip, and yet comforts and entertains
This was my kind of slow durge. Simpsons: There is an Itchy and Scratchy episode titled My Bloody Valentine. However, that is more likely a reference to the film
Was very excited to see there was another My Bloody Valentine album on here, having just finished their Isn't Anything album. Although I rated that album 4 stars, I found myself looking into Shoegaze which I wasn't familiar with and listening to other related artists. I probably preferred their other album but still enjoyed this. Therefore I will also only give this 4 stars, but it's worth noting I'm now listening to lots of similar music.
I had huge expectations for this one, since I always see it referenced and seemed to be influential and canonical. At first, I was let down by the record, but then I came to appreciate it. Did I expect something better? Yes. Is it good anyway? Yes. This is just a shit-ton of noise but just very well done.
classical shoegazing album, darf in keiner guten Sammlung fehlen
Kind of like if you threw the Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, and Maybe a few quieter Ethyl Meatplow tracks into a blender and then smashed a button marked "super soft weiner". I mean that in the best way. Not quite a five-star but damnably close.

Solid album ahead of it’s time
4.3 - Did not expect this at all, I thought it was going to be super emo and whiny. Not at all! Loved the soundscape and can see how its influenced a lot of the genre. Crap name though
Awesome album, mostly really interesting use of sounds but verges on boring and repetitive at times.
I know everyone raves about this album. And there is some interesting music here. I just don’t see it as the epic that most do
Dreamy early 90’s rock
1. The songs are good. 2. The sonic textures are really interesting. 3. The fade-out-sudden-switch structure of each song lends a unique sound to the album.
Pretty interesting, almost atmospheric guitar.
A band name that says exactly what’s in the tin. Gritty but lush, aggressive yet ethereal - synths and guitars intertwine and you get this lovely album.
8,5/10 Highlights: Only Shallow When You Sleep I Only Said Soon
Gets better the more you listen, I swear. Gotta keep this one in rotation
this wall of beautiful fuzz felt so unusual when I heard it back when it came out. Some songs stand out more than others I do not go back to it as often as I used to but nice to hear again.
4/5 - I get it, but it’s a little too…it.
I remember not liking the other one by them on this list, don't know if it's just a different mood or all that different, but enjoyed this one. Fits very well as working music for me. Will I listen to again: 70%
Oooh, I liked this. Nice ambient music for my work. 4/5
I 'know' this album, but don't think I had ever played it right through before. A 'proper' album, in that it has coherent feel and mood throughout, but also enough variation to keep it interesting. The woozy, muffled sound has been oft-copied, but never beaten. Lots of love for Loveless here.
Gave it a fresh listen and I think I get it. I think its brilliant. I think, i Think, I tHinK?
This is great, and when I'm in the right mood can be fabulous.
I enjoyed the fuzzy, noisy sounds of this album. It served as a decent background soundtrack, and I think it would be better if I blasted it loudly. My main complaint is that a lot of the tracks seemed to be playing at different volumes.
Classic!
4.4
It seems like a lot of bands in this list have tried to emulate the sound of this album, but have somehow completely missed the mark and come off as inauthentic. This feels very real and raw and emotional, and at the same time, manages to present an interesting soundscape to go along with it. The overdriven guitars create such a huge sound, and the use of samples in some of the songs lends an eerie tone.
love it
Favourite song - when you sleep
Noisy but quite good
My mate Andy has been trying to get me into this for ages, but "No", I said. "Its production is too complex for my delicate ears", I said. Then it finally appeared on this list, and I was forced to listen to it properly. And I'm so glad that I did, because this is an excellent record. I should have listened to Andy all along and not have been deterred by the huge 'wall of sound' production. Favourite tracks: only shallow, touched (which sounds like it used the SNES SPC700 soundchip), when you sleep, i only said, soon.
shoe gaze
Nice
only shallow is a fantastic track, the rest of the album can’t match those highs. I feel I say this too much, but I can’t imagine listening to this in ‘91 and not been blown away, as if I’d just seen a new colour. The above was my original thoughts, but that rating is too low as while Only Shallow is a n all time great track the rest is well worthy of a 4 at least.
My Bloody Valentine - loveless Shoegaze at it's finest. Second album by MBV. It took 2 years, 19 different studios, and £250,000 (equivalent to £480,000 in 2021) to complete the album. It took such a toll on the band that they couldn't create a follow up album and broke up in 1997. However, they returned in 2013 and released a final album called m b v. This was my first experience with My Bloody Valentine and I really enjoyed this album. 4/5
Every My Bloody Valentine album on this list has sounded strange and new and foreign but also beautiful. It sounds as if aliens heard alt-rock and then tried to make music like the humans do. The other day, after listening to the first Jesus and Mary Chain album, I noted that their songs are buried under so much distortion that it can be hard to hear the actual songs. My Bloody Valentine also employ a ton of feedback and distortion but I’m always able to hear the music underneath the noise. And the noisy elements actually add emotion and tension to the songs.
Dang this is like THE shoegaze band / record. It's funny listening to this album after not hearing it for years and realizing how thin the mix actually is. The drums really have no punch or life in them. I wonder if that's because it usually works against you in music production when you overload a track with sounds and layers? Amazing album cover. It's so zoomed in yet you can get a lot of emotion from it, which I really like. If you put this album cover in a field that is hundreds and hundreds of feet away I would see the pink and say "oh yea that's Loveless". It's a great listen and no doubt super influential. For me, it's short of a 5. It's really hard to rate for me because if it came out today, it wouldn't be that wildly different and experimental and interesting enough for me to love it and listen to it all the time. But of course, would this album be able to be released today if this type of album didn't come out way back in 1991? Without getting into time travel and alternate universes, I wonder if another band would have taken up the reigns of this much loved sub genre of music? Or would it be different? Or not yet as explored? It's a modern classic, and I should like it more than I do.
Very noisy. Sounds a bit like early 90s US northwest music.
I really liked this. I haven't looked at other reviews but I can probably guess what half of the 'mericans on here are saying about it. Ha
Another timeless classic that sounds like nothing else. There’s almost no mistaking a song off of Loveless. For my ears, Loveless is an album that almost must be listened to beginning to end to appreciate it. Perhaps the one exception is the song I Only Said, which I’m surprised to see is the 7th most listened to song on the album on Spotify. To me this song is sublime and easily the top track on the album.
More lo fi and chill than I thought. Liked it and the radio that came on after
Surprisingly easy listening
Baby’s beginners guide to shoegaze. Not my fav from the genre but so formidable in their own right, a classic.
There is something grainy about this that will speak to any kid who grew up in the 90s. Perfect for a late night walk when you want to be feel like the protagonist of an indie drama. Has a bit of radiohead in it. Favorite track was blown a wish
Ainda não superei totalmente o preconceito da atitude da banda associada a pretensão. Mas é inegável a qualidade da construção sonora das guitarras e a beleza do vocal feminino.
Loveless is all about guitar texture to attain enlightened bliss. I’ve been listening to it for over 20 years and it does take a few spins to hear and enjoy the deeply embedded harmonies and melodies. It’s also one of those records that every pretentious music critic holds up and loudly declares to be the epitome of genius, art and influence, when in reality, it is good art, subject to each persons valid personal opinion. It is definitely not for everyone. Side 1 is interesting with When You Sleep being the clear standout. Side 2 is unstoppable with stone cold classics like Sometimes, Come In Alone, and Soon. All in all, I definitely dig it, but there were better albums made in the 90’s.
Dreamy grunge. Liked it alot
Best mbv album so far, the actual music to this was great. Seemed to be more riff driven, reminded me of smashing pumpkins. I really don't like the vocals, must just be a personal choice but it doesn't work for me at all. Loads of these songs would be so good if the singing matched the power of the guitar. That's not what they are trying to do I guess, and there are arguably enough bands doing big rock numbers so it's probably refreshing to most that these are doing something different. Stops me from being a proper fan though. 3.5.
Well crafted sonic drones inserted with ethereal vocals and poppy melodies. A Post-Punk delight.
Not too bad
This album sounds like the album cover looks. Fuzzy but clear, vibrant but hazy. The songs progress in a moving and flowing forward direction. The lyrics and vocals feel almost adjacent to death metal, where they don't really matter, they just add to the vibe and composition. Some songs put you on edge, where others take you a drive. If I was to knock anything about this record, it would be that one song doesn't sound much different than the last. It's like one long song, which I believe was intentional. However, most of the transitions are seamless. 'Only Shallow' > 'Loomer' ; 'Touched' > 'To Here Knows When.' It all makes sense, and it all flows together into a wonderful moody mess of an album. This was obvious a pivotal moment for post punk indie to cross into noise rock alternative. There's no Smashing Pumpkins without this moving vibey blurb of static and feeling.
Only Shallow - 8.4 - I do think I should be understand the lyrics. Other than that, great. Loomer - 8.6 - like the vocals more here. electric guitar sounds awesome too Touched - 8.0 - a bit rougher. still sounds good To Here Knows When - 9.4 - I am drowning in my dreams. When You Sleep - 9.0 - feels more mainstream. still great. I Only Said - 8.8 - love the droning guitar Come in Alone - 8.3 - pretty good. nothing else Sometimes - 8.6 - vocals are more distinct. Blown a Wish - 7.2 - sounds like a princess song. only one I actively do not like What You Want - 7.9 - meh. I like the part at 3:15 where the guitar comes in. Soon - 9.3 - sounds awesome. guitar especially
4 étoiles j'ai kiffé l'ambiance
jeg troede my bloody valentine var emo! TIL! Super cool!
Nothing will ever beat the feeling of being 16 years old and “interested in music” and going through one of many “best albums of all time” list and stumbling into this completely blind. I think i made it 3 tracks in the first time before turning it off in confusion. anyway 16 year old me was a moron this is almost a perfect album.
Classic for a reason. Really love the loops that end each song.
Dreamy, ethereal and twisted. I remember buying this on cassette when it came out, and I didn't listen to it much because I found it to be a bit too noisy. Flash forward, and I am delighted at the creativity and beauty of this album. It's a free-form odyssey into the possibilities of sound and I just love it. Fave Songs: Soon, When You Sleep, Sometimes, Come in Alone, I Only Said, Loomer, What You Want, Blown a Wish, Only Shallow, To Here Knows When, Touched
THE shoegaze album.
4+ Stars (12/15)
Very nice
I started this album feeling skeptical. Going into it, I wasn’t familiar with shoegaze and after the first 2 tracks I was kind of at a loss. I was reading through some other reviews and read one that said shoegaze is best enjoyed loudly and through good quality headphones - so I listened to the next few tracks just like that and I had a total “oh I get it” moment. Theres something about the distortion and constant fuzz that my brain just likes when it’s being input directly into my ears with no outside disruption.
This one got me on the right day. I like moody shoegaze so I'm familiar this album. Throw this on in a dark room, headphones on, laying flat on the ground, chill out. Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: Yes
Pretty good
Difficult one to place. It is clearly an album of note, something really worthy of the list. But it's also a mad blanket of noise over songs and tunes trying to get out. Where they are allowed to, like on Only Shallow it creates a beautiful noise. On others the noise wins out. It's not my genre, but I can see that for that genre this is a thing so for sentimental reasons am over indexing it.
Loved the heavy bits in this, some of the softer bits lost me momentarily but pretty solid overall
Had no idea what to expect, but was DEFINITELY not expecting a very droning and atmospheric shoegaze album. While I had to check to make sure my audio was working correctly at times due to the bizarre mixing on this album, I still really enjoyed it.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would…
Weird good
A unique melodic howl of an album.
Honestly really liked this album. Never heard of them, will listen to this again. Lead singer style reminds me of James Maynard Keenan.
Great album
genre defining, but boring sometimes
The noisiest blob of beauty in music
So, this record is definitely a vibe. You might like it, you might not. It certainly came out of nowhere and inspired a lot of folks who hadn't heard this kind of music before. I find it to be sort of a rocking version of Cocteau Twins, if that makes any sense. Well worth a spot on the 1001 in terms of influence, style, and creativity. When I first heard this record, it felt like I was picking up some alien radio transmission... psychedelic in the truest sense of the word. Had it been vinyl, I would have assumed something wrong with the pressing!
Great stuff, love the distortion
One of those albums I could almost listen to from my brain. I have listened that many times. The howling opening riff was always something to aspire to as a guitar player. I listened to this when it first came out, but it became more influential to me in the 2000s, as I was finding my way forward in my own music. His use of whammy continues to be deeply influential to me. A feast of wobbles, more of a heroin shot and bong rip than an lsd trip. A visionary work. Definitely feels like a coherent statement chasing an incoherent feeling. Mixing distortion with melodicism. And som simple jazzy progressions with zero of jazz,s showy vertuousity. Clancy but never grating. Everything buried beneath effected layers. Like a portrait under water. What album sounded like this before this. Nothing I believe.
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: I still love this one but it doesn’t quite hit as much as it first did, without a doubt though the strongest opening track I’ve ever heard coupled with the best finish to a closing track Favourite song: Track 1 - Only Shallow
Such a good album will need to listen to it again under different circumstances. It sounds as if I'm in a dream that I can't get out of but in a good way.
Banger. I'm about 20 years late to this shoegaze thing but hey. Worst thing these guys did was call themselves my bloody valentine.
Noisy, angsty but with plenty of feeling. An electric rock album, good stuff
on closer inspection, these are loafers
Rad listen
Sounds like the Cocteau Twins went a-smashing pumpkins.
I weirdly loved it: I've listen to half of this album before and just thought it'd be rubbish but alas here I am praising it and I may have to add it to my rotation. Some of the songs felt a little too like just someone playing the guitar in the weirdest way possible but others I could definitely get behind and listen to again. I wouldn't conclude in saying it was perfect but can totally see where all the hype is coming from. I enjoyed listening to it.
Here's a doozy. Our second from MBV, and it's the big, notorious one. Favorite album of many a music nerd out there. It's very fuzzy, very crunchy, very shoegazy, with melodies fighting their way through the abyss. I found it a bit harder to connect with than the last one we had from them, but I still found myself enjoying quite a bit on here. It's the kind of album that I know would grow on me with repeat listens, and considering how much I liked already, it bodes well. I'm giving this a 4 today, but could see it easily rising to 4.5. Favorite tracks: Touched, Only Shallow, To Here Knows When, When You Sleep, I Only Said, Sometimes, Soon. Album art: Really love this one, it's definitely iconic. Perfectly matches the washed out, fuzzy textures of the music. Love the bright pink hue. 4/5
After my initial listen, I didn't really understand why this album was getting so many good reviews. I ended up listening to it one more time later in the day, and for some reason the songs clicked. Really cool album!
Definitely vibed with it
weird men backes
An amazing shoegaze album. Absolute standouts of the genre
Growing on me
This album really drones on without providing much of a break anywhere. It’s the same repetitive, melodramatic song over and over. An original sound that I haven’t quite heard before or since. I could pick one or two songs from this album and be fine not listening to the rest, though. Innovative. 4/5
El disc shoegaze per excel.lència. Complexe, mil capes i textures, amb melodies embrutades però presents. La innovació i experimentació ben enteses en un disc que gairebé defineix una década
Finally, an album by this band I actually like, if not flat out love. Does this make me all in shoegaze? That might be a bridge too far. This is just one of the best examples of how artists can experiment with noise and turn it into something of an enjoyable listening experience. That doesn't mean everyone should try it (there are clearly more misses than hits). Personally, I think Wilco's attempt at it with "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" is the best in this category. This album isn't quite at that level, but you can clearly hear where future artists like the Smashing Pumpkins and the aforementioned Wilco were inspired.
Solid. I can listen to this frequently without it being a favorite.
Pretty cool noise 7,5 out of 10
The waviness of the grooves on Loveless give me a seasick feeling. In a good way. Great tunes that defined a new genre that continues to evolve even into the 2020's.
- Super trippy indie - Easy to get lost in - Would be a clear 5 if vocals were clearer/better - Favorite songs: When You Sleep, I Only Said
klasik. shoegaze klasik.
I now understand the concept of shoegaze. This album is quoted as influencing so much indie music and i can see why. Massive distortion, guitar effects, and dreamy vibes while being super loud. I can hardly make out the vocals, but I think that's half the point.
They made noise rock into pop music but really balanced it but not going to far in either direction, very creative in that sense. Now if this came out in 1985 it might arguably be one of the greatest albums of all time but clearly they built upon many influences of the mid to late 80s. My only compliant is the more noise rock tracks like To Here Knows When are not very good when compared to Only Shallow and When You Sleep which are brilliant.
Very good noise pop album. Ethereal and engagning.
por favor sometimes🙏🙏🙏 me gusto mucho en general el sonido
Classic! Unique sound still nothing that sounds like it
Early shoe gazing wall of sound. Way ahead of its time
The filler bits are very filler, which seems odd when you think how long the band spent on the record. But the standout tracks have stuck in my head since 1991, hence the 4 stars.
I'd never previously listened to My Bloody Valentine, and on first play didn't really get the appeal. However, Loveless is a definite slow burner and after repeated listens, I have come to enjoy the swampy, ghostly melodies, fuzzy guitars and ethereal vocals. Only Shallow was a strong opener and only bettered by When you sleep and I only said. One criticism is that on some tracks the vocals are a bit too much in the background, but otherwise a great album
This one gets better with every new listening.
Ironic that it's this for valentines Day no? Not because of the word valentine, but because this is the type of music that can ruin relationships. My wife used to call this my funny farm music, which is rather rude. I still like this and although I didn't get to listen to it yesterday, I know it well and it was pretty cool for its time, not sure it's dated too well.
i always confuse this band with My Chemical Romance and was dreading this listen. Imagine my surprise!
1991. only shallow, when you sleep, sometimes
I really like this album but I definitely have to be in a particular mood to listen to it all through. Low 4.
Strong album.
A very interesting album, loud and noisy, i like it.
Les pièces se sont un peu toutes confondues dans mon écoute, mais j’ai aimé les mélodies et voix aériennes. Ce n’est pas un genre que je fréquente beaucoup, mais il me semble que cet album avait son propre son, son âme. Ça m’a plu.
Not much to add to the many comments. It's both an extremely challenging listen and deeply soothing. Best thought of IMHO as one long track through which different melodies rise and fall from the overall texture of distortion and noise. Not really any good or bad tracks, and one of its joys is re-acquainting yourself with the slivers of melody that emerge each time you relisten. Again, an album that absolutely bears repeated listens.
I love this album and it really did set the scene for experimental, introverted music in the 90s. It was super cool to see Kevin Shields noodling away at a Primal Scream live session in 2000-ish as well. But it's a bit much, isn't it? Once you've got over that initial wall-of-sound blast, it becomes a little bit boring. I know that might be the point.
Really good album, it was an ethereal experience listening to it with earphones.
really strong cool opening songs, fav song I only said least fav is loomer prefer this genre of rock
Like many other reviewers I skipped over these guys previously thinking it was just more emo whining Little did I know they set the stage for some of the best modern shoegaze I've seen and heard Really enjoyed the album and will be coming back to it for sure
Silly me, left it on shuffle. Still that rhythm guitar! Paired with the spacy vocals I can see how this album influenced so many artists
gvd Kevin
Just wonderfully dreamy and ethereal, almost feels like something you'd hear in a dream. It's kinda background music-y but I think that's somewhat the point. It seems like it could have been released yesterday as some noisy vaporwave kind of thing, so all the more impressive that this is a 31 year old album. Favourite: soon
I could enjoy this way more than the last mbv album we had. Not sure if it is better or if I was in a better mood for it
Great album, probably overrated.
Solid, matched yesterday's drive to work in the fog
As good as the genre gets
Quite nice
A classic.
Is it dense noise or masked groove rock? Get into it.
This album really holds up well. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was released in the last couple of years, and yet, IT WAS RELEASED IN THE 90S!!! While there are parts of the album that aren't my taste, it obviously influenced a lot of music I genuinely enjoy. Best Songs: When You Sleep, I Only Said, Blown a Wish Worst Songs: Touched,
Love this album
good background sounds
I like it a lot - it's like a really meticulously prepared fuzzy static brain massage. The impenetrable block of sound and the saturation are definitely the point, and I can see why this is considered so influential. Hup Ireland 🇮🇪
I like the sound of this album. I wish the songs were a bit more different from each other, or that they were shorter. They all kinda blend together for me. I'm hoping that maybe I'll like one of their other albums more. This one was still an enjoyable listen. My favourite song was Only Shallow.
Intriguing, curious and wistful. Somewhat indefinable. An album that will surely rewards future listens.
Good
Ég hef aldrei hlustað á þessa plötu í heilu lagi áður, man bara eftir hljóðinu sem @hjalti_th_th forritaði á gamla synthann sinn og nefndi eftir hljómsveitinni. En heyrðu, þetta er afar töff og skemmtilegt, þótt lögin drukkni einhvern veginn í eigin útsetningum.
This is fucking crazy. The first track, Only Shallow, is such an amazingly layered song that has such a wide range of sound too it. I definitely see how this could've left an influence on maybe Tame Impala. So surprised to see that this was made in 1991. Touched is wild. Sounds like some haunted demented Zelda song. I love the texture and grain that is tied into the sound.
Upea on. Iski kyllä nuorempana vähän lujempaa, ei ihan vitonen enää.
Lush loud and dreamy It did not impact me as much as so many others
This isn’t at all what I thought it was going I be. Doesn’t sound dated at all. Far more psychedelic than I was expecting.
I enjoyed it a lot, but some of the songs still just feel like *noisy sound*. If you look at the album as just delivering a feeling/mood, then it is pretty awesome. 8/10
Far more shoegaze & reverb than I expected. I was wrong for intentionally passing them up in the past. This is some damn good stuff.
I get it. Would I just listen to it normally… no. But I do appreciate the effort and a couple great tracks
3.5
Ahh yes, dream pop that actually sounds like a dream. Still not sure if it will grow on me, but I can definitely tell that the next listens will never be the same as the first time.
Alright. Bit screechy. I can see why people enjoy it.
I did not expect that. Very interesting. Thanks 3.5/5
The sound of not being able to run in a dream. Best Tracks: Only Shallow; When You Sleep; Soon
8/6/2022 - ALBUM #191 Today's Album: "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine - This is an album with THE highest level of acclaim within the shoegaze genre, inspiring countless other acts with it’s ethereal blend of guitar reverb and soft vocals. Despite the relatively lo-fi production of the project, it uses compression to enhance the dreamlike haziness and rhythmic ambiguity that this album is known for. The tunes these tracks at their core are relatively sweet (notably When You Sleep, Come in Alone, Blown a Wish, Soon), with lyrics that call upon this sort of love-sick nostalgia and enforce the overall concept of the record being an expression of lovelessness. The way the original guitar sound is taken out of many tracks, leaving only its ghost in the form of echoey reverb, gives the album this super unique identity. The flow of this album is also something to be commended, with many great transitions from track to track both sonically and tonally. One of my favorite examples is the perfect transitioning from the moody interlude, Touched, into the sparklingly ethereal To Here Knows When. The album as a whole is somewhat hard to review because it feels like the parts of my brain that enjoy this album are ones completely separate from the parts that usually consume music. It becomes so much more of a visceral experience listening to this album because there isn’t a real separation between instruments within the sound so it’s not an album where you can focus on just one instrument. This makes it difficult for me to exactly pin down what to say that makes this album so awe-inspiring and enjoyable, but if I had to sum it up in a sentence: This album simply does what no album did before it and is, in many ways, yet to be superseded by any of its contemporaries. Overall, this is a fantastic sonic experience that bends the fabric of what music conventionally sounds like and challenges listeners with an entirely new framework with which to understand music as an art medium. Give this one a listen if you are a fan of shoegaze or ambient pop and even if those genres aren’t your favorite, give it a listen because this album deserves to be heard at least once throughout your lifetime. Highlights: Only Shallow, Loomer, To Here Knows When, When You Sleep, I Only Said, Come in Alone, Sometimes, Blown a Wish, What You Want, Soon Score: 8.75/10 Beautiful in ways I don’t think I can comprehend yet
I can appreciate this album for what it is, even if it's not totally my thing
sexig platta
Snuddar på en femma denna, klassiker efter klassiker
Delightful tinnitus.
I love the noisiness and experimental nature of this. Normally, that sort of thing drives me nuts, but not here. I’ve been listening to this record for years, just don’t ask me to be able to name a single song.
This is really cool sounding, like a Foo Fighters, but the vocals are this light airy thing balanced on these guitars that want to take off on a heavy Nirvana track. This was really enjoyable
It's a classic if not a bit one dimensional
Really nice sound they’re going for. Very cohesive. 7/10 but 4/5 here.
Lovely noisy nonsense
Kinda boring but still pretty good if you're in a shoegazey mood
Far, far better than their debut album, 'Isn't Anything,' this album solidifies their sound in a wonderful way. I was really put off by getting the other album first, but this one might have turned me around on My Bloody Valentine. dreamy in the best ways, the music made me feel like I was floating in air. The ethereal nature of the songs are just that good.
It was alright. Not really my thing, but great musically.
Show gaze and great
I admit I was not expecting to like this but I enjoyed it quite a bit and recognized more than I thought I would. I didn't look at the year immediately, and thought it was from maybe 2006. Was shocked to see it was from 15 years prior.
Was a bit intimidated to listen to this since I know it's the quintessential shoegaze album. Overall I'm into it, I am definitely a texture guy when it comes to music and it checked all those boxes. The only thing that I didn't love was the higher pitched vocals by Shields, I preferred the lower register or Butcher's style. 4.5 down to 4.
Beautifully haunting
Loud. Beautiful. 8-9/10 1. Sometimes 2. When You Sleep 3. Only Shallow
I haven't listened to this in a long time. I remember the first time I heard it and it didn't really click with me - I think I'd been oversold on them to be honest. They were total indie darlings at the time. I still don't put this album on very often but it has grown on me substantially. It's fascinatingly inventive and just really really fun to listen to.
Pretty revolutionary shit this
Classic disco
Not what I was expecting at all. Felt like an industrial / avant garde rock album. Production was unreal.
really enjoyed listening to this.
classic noisy shoegaze-y with tinny alien vocals. slightly overstays its welcome but a strangely cathartic wall of sound
Sehr gutes Album, wenn es auch hier und da mal die Nerven strapaziert.
Right up my alley. I have never heard them before but it was just the kind of stoner grunge that tickles my inner ear.
Distorted grunge at its best
I really enjoyed this one. Shoegaze gets you feeling a certain way. Not a single track Really stood out but thats cause it all just merged and flowed. I wouldn't be in a rush to approach this one again but I'm glad I listened.
If you’re getting a little high and shoveling snow - this is for you
He didn't even let me out for Christmas
Very good. An album that pushed the boundries and set an incredibly high bar for a new music genre (at the time) shoegaze. This album is another case where I wish the rating system on this site had more than just 5 ratings. By giving it a 4 I feel like robbing it of the credit it absolutely deserves, but I also don't feel like it deserves a 5 yet, for that I'd need to listen to it a couple more times.
Here you will find music to melt your brain, or at least the space between it and your eardrums. MBV doesn't groove like certain shoegaze groups, but there are depths to their sound that emerge over time. This listen, I got a lot of the higher lines as types of distorted string sections: Strong stuff, and not at all what I remembered. There's quite a bit of variety in tracks, though it's all of a kind of piece.
Interesting ambience. The first song sets the tone of the album. Quieter vocals with strong instrumental experimentation
Lovely album. Fantastic stuff to drift to sleep with. I'm not at the point where I would call this a through and through masterpiece, but it could get there some day. Favorites: When You Sleep, Sometimes, Soon
Solid the whole way through
This album could be a 4. It's really close. The mix of 90s jangly guitars vs an overdriven wall of noise almost drowning out the soft vocals. It's just missing something, maybe diversity between the tracks. After a while it seems to bleed into a drone. Still, I've got a feeling I'll revisit this. Stan out track - loomer
I actually enjoyed this album a lot. Good ambient noise rock and some really interesting harmonies going on at times. I think this hit on my my jam band foundation a bit which is why I liked it more than the rest of the group.
-i think it would be good to do my math homework too: loud but not stressful. - it feels like being stuck in an old TV and the signal is going out. A very good vibe (To Here Knows When) - would make very good road trip music (When You Sleep) -very good! I'll probably come back to this album at some point
Good
Would listen again
Classic Shoegaze.
Very unique sound with the guitar!
Great sound, can't really hear what they are saying
I preferred the quieter songs but liked it overall
Album ícono del Shoegaze, me gustó
Day 1: An album I'm familiar with, but have only listened to a few times all the way through.
Some noisey shoegaze. But I almost bored of how rhythm guitar sounds. Reminds me of late 90s post-hardcore somehow.
Really samey, but I do like the vocals and the more upbeat tracks a lot
Good one, but not to be shared, needs an alone immersion to be appreciated
Banging shoegaze - THE shoegaze album. Dreamy as hell, good listening. Music itself is not overly interesting, but neither is a warm blanket.
These guys wore the shoes at the onset of the shoegaze scene.
Really interesting will be listening to again.
Best track: "I Only Said" Clearly influenced the Smashing Pumpkins
I have not heard of this band before but I like the style of music. Gives me girlfriend vibes. Genre is "shoegaze".
Fattar varför den är goated
Cool stuff. I never heard it before but I see their influence!
Shoegaze became my favourite genre of music
This is the brand of shoegaze that I don't super love. It's pleasant enough, but the fuzzy lyrics and lack of focus on melody really bring it down for me. I'm not sure I completely understand the universal acclaim this band/record gets. Best track: Soon
~4.5
There's some interesting stuff in here, glad to have heard it once.
Totalmente atmosférico
01) Only Shallow - 7,0 02) Loomer - 6,5 03) Touched - 7,0 04) To Here Knows When - 7,5 05) When You Sleep - 7,0 06) I Only Said - 6,5 07) Come in Alone - 6,5 08) Sometimes - 6,5 09) Blown a Wish - 7,0 10) What You Want - 6,5 11) Soon - 6,5 TOTAL: 6,77 (68/100) Current ranking: 597/956
An immersive journey through hazy soundscapes. It's got this slow burn that grows on you. The vocals are buried under layers of distortion like they're playing hide and seek with your eardrums. It's a unique experience. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - when you sleep - sometimes * Only 2 songs are available through Spotify at the time of this review.
I feel that I should like this more than I do. But if I'm being honest, I don't like the mixing. I know it's a very important stylistic choice, and sometimes it produced an emotional response for me, but mostly I didn't enjoy how washed out and muddy it is. They're using the same boring drum patterns that every other rock song uses, that every drummer learns first. It's a large part of why I'm bored of rock genres in general. The main positive was, occasionally, I would settle into the blanket of sound and start to feel something. I like that they're trying to cultivate an aesthetic. I like the cover art. I'm going to blame dad for not exposing us to it sooner, because maybe I would like it more, now ;P
I guess?
I think this one caught me in just the right state of mind because I could see this being an album I really hated but actually didn't find it too bad. Felt a bit dated I supposed but a lot of cool interesting grooves.
I really like the feel of this album and it's pretty wild for 1991, but it kind of drips of melancholy too hard and the lyrics are too hidden.
Noise that didn't sound as good as the previous noise from them
Normally I really like shoegaze, but I can't find my way with My Bloody Valentine no matter how I try. Just like with their other albums we've had on this list, there is something good in there, but unfortunately it's trapped behind all distortion that overtakes absolutely everything. I don't have an issue with vocals being used a background pad or effect in songs, like it is here. It's clearly not intended for the actual lyrics to stand out. But sadly, even that is too low volume and shut out by the guitar. Still, 'when you sleep' is decent, and so is 'what you want'. And if you want some 90s sounding rock, this is definitely for you. But be wary of your hearing. Weak 3.
OK maybe I'm coming around on shoegaze because I thought this was a pretty unique and entertaining listen, and miles better than the other MBV album.
Мои друзья меня ненавидят, но это пиздец как скучно
This is an interesting music genre. Why does every song sound like it's melting? I'm not sure this is a band I can put on and just groove to. The album is a vibe, and I can really get into music that breaks conventional standards, but this is one of those that I could only enjoy in a couple of scenarios, like a long, late-night drive. This is the first album I've encountered that wasn't on the streaming service I subscribe to. I wasn't exactly sure how I'd handle it when this scenario came up, but I was able to easily find all the tracks on YouTube.
This was different, but it really didn't move me in any particular way.
it was fine. kind of forgettable.
mashup of grunch w fx
quintessential 90's punky rock. I like that I can simultaneously see where there inspiration came from, sonic youth or VU, and also hear shades of the smashing pumpkins. It;s better than some of the other garbo on here
An okay album, I liked When You Sleep the most.
Kings of shoegaze When you sleep
Sounds like this is recorded at the bottom of a pool.
Triste que es un albun triste justo se me hubiera enrredado la vida para no seguir con esto on the daily, pero recuerdo que es un album que me hizo sentir emo in a pre-2000 way. Which is iconic.
Lots of distortion, not enough bass. Still pretty good.
In a different mood I'd like this more. Or maybe in smaller doses
It starts off great, but I found it to become a bit same-y after a while.
Mixed feelings on this one. Sometimes it’s cool, and sometimes it’s just a trippy mess.
Not bad, but a bit drone-y at times.
Weird how I had this on my Spotify library even though it’s not available on it. 7/10 would listen again.
OK so hands up who got confused between My Bloody Valentine and Bullet For My Valentine. Ahem. 🙋🏻♀️. NOT what I was expecting from band with this name (in a good way) but also exactly the sort of impactless indie fuzz that serves as movie background music and nothing more. Inoffensive other than how boring it was.
Noisy
First half of the album is too busy and noisy for me. Picks up Come In Alone, which along with Sometimes is probably the highlights of the album for me. The rest of the back-half isn't as strong but is better than the first half.
My jury is still out on this genre. To tell the truth I thought of it as low key soft grunge or alt-rock or the like. I forgot when I looked it up, about shoe gaze. Right... Shoe gaze... Okay. Sure. Still though, even with a name to the genre... i am just not sure. It is ... Okay. It is never bad and not too hard to listen to, it is not wall of noise or too fusion/ experimental to deal with... even with the hard to hear lyrics and low tempo of it all... I don't hate on it to be sure, just not sure really where or when i would be like "Hey, put on some My Bloody Valentine!" It is definitely "kind of specific" while being generally okay to casually listen to.
3.4 3x for the time it was released it's amazing
Yes, but no. Influential, but I just didn't enjoy it.
This was ok. I was familiar with There She Goes, which is catchy. Three stars for the album?
Given what I knew about this record I expected it to be louder and more aggressive - their live shows have a reputation of being the loudest things ever. This was relatively sedate. Pleasant enough though
In the US, I could only use Youtube to listen, so it was not a pleasant experience. The music itself was moody but abrasive. I need to find some other way to listen and spend more time with it
really experimental, however not my cup of tea
