Reviews (page 5 of 7)

It's just CSN with more jams and less lyrical content. Too long.

meh country

This is something my dad would enjoy a lot even though he wouldn’t understand the lyrics and it makes me smile just thinking about it. For me, it’s just ok though. It's inoffensive, easy listening, full of pretty melodies and harmonies. Perfect to put in the background while working or driving. Still there’s not much that grabs my attention with the exception of a few songs (Colorado, So begins the task, The treasure). Not sure if I’d come back but I like to think I will. 3/5

svipar nokkuð til verka með csn(y), hvorki mjög spennandi né skemmtilegt við fyrstu hlustun. áferðarfallegt og spilar vel á gítarinn blessaður.

272 albums in and I think I found the most middle-of-the-road '70s rock album that's out there. There is nothing at all wrong with this album, but there is also very little that makes it stand out in any way. It has a nice folk-y sound throughout (with the occasional foray into a full country sound), it's generally a mid-tempo, soft vibe, it's nice. Not particularly groundbreaking, but nice. This is a double album, meaning you get 71 whole minutes of the soft melodies of Stephen Stills. I really don't have much else to say about it, it is what it is. Favorite song: Colorado Other: Song of Love, Jet Set (Sigh), Both of Us (Bound to Lose), So Begins the Task, Johnny's Garden, Bound to Fall, How Far, 8/18/24

Decent album overall. 3.5/5

And finally I have completed all of the Crosby stills Nash and young solo albums (I think). It wasn’t easy and involved sitting throught mostly bland dad rock albums with limited exceptions but I’m glad I did it just so I can say it’s all boring with some authority. This album was not one of the exceptions.

This was find. Added Don’t Look at My Shadow to my faves playlist. Probably won’t ever listen to the rest of the album again.

Honestly, I didn’t finish. Ran out of time today. It was feeling like a 3, though.

Some good vibes by ol’ Stephen.

Boomer wet dream.

A little long, but still solid. Didn't have any standout songs. Length drops it 0.5 pts to 2.5/5.

Bang average bluesy country tinged rock by numbers.

A sludgy mess of styles and a double at that. I was weary after the 5th track. Its Stills so musically very competent....but meh

This album feels like Stills figuring out what kind of musician he wants to be - there's rock-influenced country western, blues, bluegrass, gospel....or he's just showing off. For me, he could have stuck with the rocked-up-folk style he developed with Crosby and Nash - and then Young.

Better than I thought it would be, but still too long and too 70s.

A beautiful and undoubtedly influential album by probably the most overlooked member of CSNY, it is nonetheless "not really my thing" enough to revisit as a whole. There are some keepers here, though.

long double album split into 4 themes; the country and bluegrass one is a bit droll, but the opening side and last half are pretty solid.

They really put their worst foot forward with this one. The first few tracks are very generic blues rock, but the rest of the songs are nice, folksy tunes that work a lot better. Still way too long.

What to Do // The Treasure //

Quite varied blues country, some echoes of CST&Y harmonies. Just a little bit unfocused for me.

Muito legal! Parceiro do Neil Young. Mas tmbm achei um pouco enjoativo

Stills is someone I enjoy listening to and I can't help but wonder if he'd be lame to hang with. I like a lot of the feel and texture of this. The playing and arrangements are solid. I don't know if this needs a double album since some draws on but the skill is there. Worth a listen for sure. CSNY are better than all of the solo work besides Young. I'm torn on a 3 or 4 here. I feel like The Treasure should've ended the album (order, not needing to get rid of Blue Man).

The stereo mixing is great. The music has nice warmth to it. There is too much here. They should have cut this down. I'm about halfway done and nothing is popping out. Solid instrumentation, but I was waiting for a moment when it popped and it never happened. Maybe with some deeper listens I'd find something.

Decent. Not great for me, but not bad at all.

Stills, it was way too long man. Not many people can pull off a double album tbf. In the end i couldnt remember much of the album if im honest.

Smooth, yet raw. Very much enjoyed.

Pleasant. But that's it.

a but too long for its own good

It was okay. Generic 70’s rock album

Another album I enjoyed far more than I thought I would. I've never listened to any solo material from Stills, and assumed I'd be wishing I was listening to Neil Young or CSN(Y) instead. But nope, I liked this a lot - very enjoyable bluesy singer songwriter southern rock. My only issue is with the length. I love long albums, don't get me wrong. But this is one of those times I might use the word bloated as a descriptor.

Allllllmost gave up on this album, but it's actually so good. like a slower, soulful credence clearwater revival

Never heard this before. Pretty great 👍

I liked certain songs but it was too long

It's a solid effort by Stills. The songs ebb and flow well together. There are a few standout tracks, but nothing mind blowing nor at the same level as when he's with Crosby, Nash, and Young.

Lotta people hating on good ole' SS. I rather enjoyed this album, but get the critiques on his vocals. Otherwise pretty low-key enjoyable southern rock / country rock.

liked this guy's voice and the bluegrassy vibes, was so down with this and then it went ON for AGES

Never knew Stills had a first name

This is nice, but I'd like it a lot better if there were no lyrics.

Protest classic rock, a vibe that can’t be manufactured

an interesting concept that’s well executed at times, but misses the mark overall. not a bad listen, but a bit too lengthy for my liking.

I was never a huge CSNY fan but after watching a PBS performance years ago I saw the talent behind Stephen Stills and I liked them better. This album exemplifies that talent. You can hear a lot of his song writing influence from CSNY in songs like Witching Hour. My favorite from the track is the bluesy High & Dry and Go Back Home. This is a listen again kinda’ album.

It got better as the album progressed. Not m style.

not going to be huge on my list. its probably a 2.5 for me, but ill bump up to a three for some sweet blues licks and an overall nice experience. easy background music, in my opinion.

Totally inoffensive but totally inessential. Way better options out there

I like the general vibe. They are catchy songs that could be background music in movies from the 70s or 80s. A lot of it blended together for me though, with nothing surprising enough to note.

Solid rock album. Has a few different vibes from vegging out on a couch trippin some acid vs drinkin some bud heavy at a summer amphitheater show. Despite a way too long album, most of the songs are surprisingly not too long. Which is nice

Influence be damned, they’re stat compilers. Like an athlete you thought dominated for two decades but when you break their career down you discover they were actually just above average the whole time. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and whoever else’s name they throw on there are just that. You’re bound to have some chart toppers when you release 73 albums combined. I did actually enjoy this album, at the very least more than the Neil Young and CSNY albums we’ve had. It’s got some good variety and it’s nice to have on in the background. Still on the fence with the double album thing.

I enjoyed this album more than any of the other albums that have been part of the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young super groups. Still not something that I would go out of my way to listen to, but by no means did I dislike it. The names in this band feel like a group of space marines being introduced to a rookie. "Welcome to the team new guy. Come over here and let me introduce you to the squad. We've got Dallas, Chris, Al, Joe, Paul, and this.... this here's Fuzzy."

3/5. I do enjoy most of the songs on here, and appreciate the separation of vinyl sides with names and themes, the concept is fun to have just like Something/Anything?. I will say some of the songs do sound a little generic within their respective genre. Like a lot of the 2nd side flows a little too similarly. Like I said, I do like the theme, but they don't stand out enough now, which is frustrating. So it's good, but could definitely be better. Best Song: Jet Set (Sigh), The Love Gangster, Blues Man

Pleasantly twangy Southern rockers having fun Playing porch music

Churn churn churn... He must have been something to see in the 70's. All that material, did he ever sleep?

He's no Crosby, Nash, and/or Young. 2.5/5

This is a rad little album! The blues, folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriter elements are really really cool. I often feel that Stills is kind of the red-headed step child of his previous band and never really gets the acclaim as his counterparts. The vision is really cool. I like how they experimented with traditional genres in American music, but also leaned in to the singer songwriter ethos of day. It makes sense why so many Deadheads were into this music. This album has a lot of ambition packed in it, but I'm not sure its a "classic." There aren't a lot of stand out songs per say and despite it being a really cohesive record, it doesn't really hold up to other dense albums of the period. Still it's a cool relic and really awesome album that I had a blast listening to.

Good album enjoyed this, good easy listening soft rock, it is a bit long and I’m Not sure anything was memorable enough for me to come back to though

Not sure if or when I finished this album but I’ve been listening to it for 7 hours. Not because I like it but because I’m trying to notice if there’s a distinct point where one of the songs sounds different. This album is way too long for having little variance of its soft rock style. This isn’t bad but for a 70s album there’s some to be desired. 6.0/10

First track has a great groove. bopping my head for sure. Second one also fun, with mid song switch Digging this so far

I read a great review comparing this album to a wonderful significant other. S/he’s always sweet and reliable but you know that there is one out there that is much better… For me, this album borders on meh.

Enjoyed this quite a bit, but a bit long.

Nice album

Solid album

I liked a couple of songs which is more than I thought I would so there’s that.

Very surprising didnt expect a great album. From indie to rock blues and very cool sound. Album was well produced order of song is great they blocked together a few alike and then a totally different tune and song type to break monotony. Its a good album it has more than 5 songs I actually enjoey and I hate country music but its like an indie country pop rockish kind of music. Problem is thet its like a triple album with 21 songs definitively 9 too many

There’s a lot going on here, stylistically. There’s the expected classic rock sound, but with auxiliary percussion that shifts things into a Latin feel for a few bars; bluegrass; country gospel, some experimental synth sounds; touch of funk, and of course those tight CSN-style harmonies. It’s good and I like it, but it would take repeated listens before I really got into it. 3.6

Curious that they call this a Stills album, although it definitely sounds like it. I can hear pieces of earlier CSNY songs. The wiki tells of how great the musicians are, and I guess they are, but it sounds like jam band/Cali country stuff or maybe CSNY meets The Band. Not bad, but not all the time. And surely nothing that requires a continuous 106 hours in the studio. 3.5

Very interesting mix of blues, country, Latin and rock music

Boring 70’s southern rock. Was debating between a 2 and 3

eh 3/5

Right off the bat I like “song of love”. This is so good and so eclectic.

I liked all the fiddle parts. "A crowd pleaser for your Republican in laws" - a review from the generator. Favourites: rock and roll crazies/Cuban bluegrass, both of us (bound to lose), fallen eagles, hide it so deep, the treasure - take one, The music is alright but the album is too bloated, some songs could be cut. 3/5

Overall solid rock album. I didn't really fuck with the country aspects too bad, but I liked the instrumentals overall. Decent vocals, nothing to call home about tho lel. Also I didn't like Fallen Eagle at all. Pretty good mix of slow and fast songs i guess. A little long for what it was, Blues Man definitely felt like it was dragging on by the end. 3/5, some songs were just alright otherwise might've hit 4 just for being enjoyable. Favourites: Song of Love, Jet Set (Sigh), Colorado (loved this one! good piano), Johnny's Garden

Had a bit of a hard time getting into this album, to be honest it was a little on the long side as well... 21 songs... come on now. This is another one of those albums that's neither amazing nor trash that I really vibe with on some songs and am indifferent to on others. I liked the electric guitar. Favourites were Rock and Roll Crazies/Cuban Bluegrass, Jesus Gave Love Away for Free, Colorado and Hide It so Deep. Too lengthy and nothing that stands out to me, 3

A good BBQ, beach, camping, chilling outdoors and drinking a beer kind of album. It’s lovely and the talent is rife. Some really groovy riffs. But not terribly memorable for me.

Good album.

(1001: keep getting double albums when I'm behind schedule) Apparently this is a debut double album. I think it's kind of weird to put everyone's name on the cover unless this is some kind of supergroup. Upon review, I guess it was somewhat of a supergroup, but I've really only heard of Stills. At any rate, the opening tracks have some good bluesy rock that kind of reminds me of Clapton, and maybe a less horn-y Blood sweat & tears. Later on it gets more country before going back around. For me, this album didn't have any great songs. I didn't really like the country ones either so just kind of mid all around. I recently had Yes and their synth really elevates what could be a similar sound to Stills. Some may prefer the simpler sound. I'd be fine having this on in the background doing chores or whatever. Favorite track "Rock and roll crazies" 2.5/5

Bluesy, light rockish and good music production on this one. This album is a soundtrack for some people I’m sure but I just don’t find myself getting carried away in its musical offerings. Choice cut: Anyway

To me the amount of Crosby, Stills, Nash and adjacent artists on here is the equivalent of Americans moaning about Britpop. Kinda tedious. And well over an hour of this stuff? Absolutely no need. 2.5

Real easy listening and a good album. Just too long

m embole

Why do I always get the super long albums when I have the least time available to listen to them? With just one listen through, I can say that nothing really stood out as amazing here. While it was interesting to hear different genres, a lot of it blended together. It's ok but I'm not going to go out of my way to listen to it again.

Pretty good, inoffensive!

Stills has never really done it for me but at least for a double album this was fairly diverse. A couple songs stood out, albeit not by much. I'm feeling generous so I'll go the full 3 stars.

Not entirely my thing, but not bad. I preferred the songs that lean heavier into bluesy wah-wah guitar rock than country, and there were enough of those to keep me from getting bored.

It was alright some songs weren’t that good

A very good album I find boring and do not like. But still a good album.

Quite enjoyed most of this, but I do think ultimately it's quite forgettable. Fairly middle of the road. Not sure I can pick out any tracks in particular. There were some samba type influences going on in parts I think? Think 3 is fair. Pretty good, but not sure it's an album I needed to hear before I die!

This album kind of rocked! Like it could have been a lame, old dad rock record but it wasn't somehow...The tracks were interesting and the instrumentals were engaging and fun. They definitely wanked around a little too much on some songs but overall I thought it was a good listen.

Pretty boring

Powerful offering from Stills

God give me strength, another double album... 01) Song of Love - 7,0 02) Rock & Roll Crazies/Cuban Bluegrass - 7,5 03) Jet Set (Sigh) - 7,0 04) Anyway - 6,5 05) Both of Us (Bound to Lose) - 7,0 06) Fallen Eagle - 7,5 07) Jesus Gave Love Away for Free - 7,0 08) Colorado - 7,5 09) So Begins the Task - 7,5 10) Hide It So Deep - 6,5 11) Don't Look at My Shadow - 6,5 12) It Doesn't Matter - 8,0 13) Johnny's Garden - 7,5 14) Bound to Fall - 7,0 15) How Far - 7,5 16) Move Around - 7,5 17) The Love Gangster - 7,0 18) What to Do - 7,5 19) Right Now - 7,0 20) The Treasure (Take One) - 7,0 21) Blues Man - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,17 (72/100) Well, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I think I have traumas of the past double albums I listened to. It has 4 sides, each side has its own theme. I think I prefer side 3 with folk-rock songs, "It Doesn't Matter" stands out for me. It reminds me of Fleetwood Mac.

I get this weird campfire music vibe from this record. Where I just want to pull out an acoustic guitar and everyone sing along. There are a lot of great harmonies, as one would expect with Stephen Stills. Not everything is acoustic, but the overall feel of the album is very relaxed. Tasty bass riffs and guitar licks. Unfortunately, it took me a few days of revisiting as the music wasn't diverse enough to spark my attention, and I felt like I was getting a bit bored. Even though, I didn't dislike the record, it definitely didn't make it on my personal hypothetical 1001 records list.

Not my favorite but some of the songs were kind of a jam in an oldies kind of way. Favorite song: Blues Man

Country. No está mal.

Decent likeee

I liked it, a very diverse album

Nothing bad but nothing noteworthy in my opinion. Country flavored singer-songwriter music.

Really good album, I enjoy anything Stills is involved in.

I like it but it dragged on a bit.

It's a good album. There are times when it feels like it's going to be a GREAT album. But there are also times when it's really not so great... And that's the problem with double-disc sets. They go on so long and are stuffed with so many songs that there are just going to be some real stinkers. Had Steve just kept the cream of the crop and cut it down to one disc, this would be a 5 star album, no contest. But, as it stands, it's a 3 star experience at best.

I do really like some of the songs on here, but I wouldn't care to listen to the whole album again. Another reviewer commented that this album was perfect for driving on the open road/back roads. I completely agree that it is well suited to a country drive.

Nice interlaying guitar parts. Overall, good. Not super memorable for me.

Totally fine and enjoyable rock, and a gap for me. But I would have had to listen more closely for anything outstanding.

It's a shame this was so long. I enjoyed a good amount of it in the background, perhaps obviously stated, but it's pretty comparable to Neil Young. A lot of guitars.

Long album of generic early '70's music.

Stephen Stills, the brain behind Buffalo Springfield, CSN (&Y) and more shows his mastery for writing on this solo album as well. Interesting that this is a double album that clocks in a full 1:11 of pure content compared to some of the modern day hip hop albums on this list that fill the same timeline but with less content. 3/5.

This was all over the place musically. A lot of it sounded like Grateful Dead but then there was soft rock, bluegrass, psychedelic, funk, gospel. Felt like Stephen was trying to prove something.

Picked up towards the end, but mostly pretty boring country rock. Didn't hate it, won't remember it.

Decent record. Have not been a CSNY fan, group or solo. But Stills is a good listen.

Feels a bit dull at times. Glad to hear songs like “Fallen Eagle” to liven things up.

Pretty.... PRETTY BORING. lol its nice but not very memorable.

Good musicianship but it's not CSNY move on. Nothing to see here.

Day9 - solid album

I don't know, Stephen Stills. This is all fine but just not my cup.

Yeah, bust out those denim shirts, those oh-so-tasteful blooz licks and a Nepalese temple ball - them Canyon boys are headed upstate, they're gettin' it together, and it's gonna be a double because we're making a statement, maaaan. Some pretty good stuff, some run of the mill workouts and plenty of songs that are fine, well played, but lacking anything particularly livewire about them. Reeks of patchouli.

Helt bra Southern rock. Lite dålig production

He's not the one who powered CSN&Y. But he didn't drag them down either.

I can't listen to this whole thing. Why is it so long? I've had my fill of late 60s early 79s blues rock.

About the same as the last Stills album we got. Some pretty good songs that I quite enjoyed, but also some that were extremely irritating, especially the violin heavy ones.

Pretty good, not my vibe really.

Even the least remarkable member of CSNY got a solo album on the list? Actually, scratch that - Graham Nash didn’t make it? But he was the British one! Stills is great as a collaborator in CSNY’s harmonies. But as a solo artist his work is just ok. Some decent folk rock. Some less decent country leanings. Nothing really memorable. Instead of working on a whole double album of mediocre songs, Stills should have focused on making a smaller set really stand out.

I liked it better the second time through, making two growers in a row! There are some tight tunes on this double album offering. It also has the overly casual feel of a bunch of dudes riffing with each other at times. As I’ve said for several double+ albums before, there could have been something more special by carefully selecting the best 35-45 min.

Prima muziek, maar niet zo bijzonder. Would not buy, 3 sterren

Not a lot to be said about this one beyond it being enjoyable. This was a fun rock/country/folk type album and we have heard some Stills before. Parts of me can see why this one would be on here, but I also don't understand why a giant majority of these albums are all roughly the same genre.

A little too folky for me. But at the same time, it gave me old man boy band vibes. Cowboy music.

Lots of interesting songs and sounds, different influences and styles

Nice country/rock album. Haven't listened enough yet, but so far I'm liking what I'm hearing. It does country in a pleasant and tasteful way.

It's cool but haven't listened enough since I was holly and jolly today

Yes Stephen Stills! Lay that sweet, sweet soft rock upon me! Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Song of Love Date listened: 23/12/23

This album was okay. Longer than it needed to be. Kinda groovy, but felt a bit repetitive after a while. Light on lyrics, both quantity and quality

solid album, very similar to CSN work.

Really enjoyed the first set of songs but it starts to go downhill for me toward the middle. That’s entirely due to my own personal taste- I enjoy an early 70s classic rock bluesy sound but I’m not as into bluegrass or folk rock. It’s a solid album! But I’m gonna have to give it a high 3: I wont be seeking it out again but I enjoy some of the songs a lot.

its alright but a bit boring

Decent

So Begins the Task of writing this review. How Far do I go? Right Now not too far so I don’t miss out on seeing the Love Gangster. Anyway, this one was alright.

That was a slog (though reading about its recording not as much of a slog as it was for the musicians involved!). Hard to take in the variety of styles in one listen but can sense the musicianship underneath this all and that repeated listens would reveal the various layers at work here - but not sure personally I’ll revisit.

Objectively I feel like this is a pretty good album, but it's a little too '70s for me. I liked a lot of it, but I didn't love the album as a whole.

En del bra, en del något sämre. En trea kan han väl få.

This album definitely suffers from its length. It has a very unique mix of elements from different genres, but none of the songs really stood out to me.

I find these kinds of albums really difficult to rate. I can hear the influence they have had on the music I love. I can see that they are really good musicians and the production or whatever is sound. I just find it hard to stay engaged with it. I am glad when it’s over even though I can hear that actually, the music isn’t bad at all. So a 3 star rating that appreciates the work but says no when I’m asked if I’d listen again seems the right fit.

A nice album, an easy listen with a nice dancing beat.

This is quite good, nothing spectacular but consistently listenable.

Gave up, totally fine but just a Stills album.

Colorado and Johnny’s Garden were good. Everything else was aight.

Ja, dit is een album. Totaal onopvallend als je het mij vraagt. Niet slecht op zich, dat niet. Maar ook niet dat ik denk: dat moet ik nou nog eens gaan luisteren.

Really good music but pretty average

A blueprint for indie music in 2007. It's... Alright I guess?

i liked this

Decent early 70s Southern Rock album that leans a little to hard into Country territory on the second half. Enjoyed it overall.

Knew nothing of this album or any of the songs on it. Overall an enjoyable listen. Would probably listen again if I was in the mood for that bluesy southern folk riock vibe.

With the exception of the final song this could have just been a csny album. Overall fine but pretty samey 3.25

Decent

Some songs I found myself bobbing my head to, but others I were waiting for them to end. Overall, okay

An interesting mix of country, folk, and rock but nothing that really stuck out.

Tän vois lisätä äitiyspakkaukseen jokaiselle FAIJAlle.

Taas vähän samaa kuin edellisen kohdalla: ok rock-platta. 2.5/5

Manassas? More like molasses. It’s not that bad, the songs are fun and I like them, but I’d be impressed if over an hour of anything didn’t start to drone. 3/5

Blyyyys, välillä ihan tiukkaa vääntöä

average

1/50 I reckon. Give or take, there’s 20 CSNY albums on here. So for every 49 albums you’re going to get a Byrds album, or something similar. I think that’s too many. This one had a lot of good moments- wah wah guitars and funky organs- but didn’t really seem to have any direction. Pick a genre and and trim it down to 40mins.

Stills naming the band/album Manassas, for some reason to do with the civil war? Then taking the album cover shot there? Was this some kind of slight to Young’s “Southern Man”? I’m not a big fan of “Southern” rock. Some of the tracks felt like they belonged in a Dukes of Hazard scene were Boss Hog is chasing the Duke brothers or when the narrator is telling us what the Duke boys have been up to. Lots of steel guitar (although very well played), but the album does change it up and it’s very well produced & well played. Don’t think Stills is that great of a vocalist & I didn’t find the lyrics very compelling. That being said, I could easily have this album on in the car and enjoy the music, just nothing much stands out.

The best word to describe this one is groovy. It feels like the 70s. The guitar work is excellent, and the album has a really good flow. It's not my favorite music, and I don't think the lyrics are too profound. The songs all have cool parts to them though. I think this is a decent album overall!

Enjoyable if overlong southern rock.

I still prefer Stills to Neil Young, Song of Love is excellent, Colorado is nice, it's solid but unspectacular country-rock stuff.

Started well then became a mosh mash that felt like it would be annoying to listen to on repeat. Loved the bluesy bits.

Cat: I liked it. Rock and rollll

That was pleasant enough. Couple of the more country ones grabbed my attention a bit but don't know name

It's good old fashioned rock. Don't know much more to say about it. Most of the songs are fairly similar.

Excellent blues rock guitar. Most songs would be improved by removing the vocals.

I liked it would listen again

A double album from 1/4 of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Technically Manassas is it's own band, but who's keeping track? There's a nice easiness to the album as Stills gently sings his little songs. Occasionally leans more county than folk. Nothing wrong with that, just an observation. As is the case with double albums, it runs longer than i would usually like and tends to wear me down a bit. That being said, it never feels like the album hits a low point. Every track is a pleasant listen. I also don't remember a single track. It's nice for what it is.

Decent

"Manassas" is the debut double album by blues-rock group Manassas. Manassas was a super group of sorts led by Stephen Stills (vocals, guitars, various instruments) and included Chris Hillman (guitars, vocals) of the Byrds/Flying Burrito Brothers and various other session musicians. Each of the four album sides had a name and a different musical style which included rock and Latin, country, folk and blues and rock. The album was critically well received and commercially reached #4 in the US. Amazingly, when the album hit #4, a David Crosby/Graham Nash album and Neil Young's "Harvest" were also in the top 5. Side One is called "The Raven" and features rock and Latin sounds. "Song of Love" starts things off with a slide guitar, organ and congas. A nice guitar solo (plenty of those throughout). He's questioning the Vietnam War. "Melody- Rock & Roll Crazies/Cuban Bluegrass" was the second single released. Layered guitars. Lots of going musically. The song takes off and speeds up. The craziness of the musical business. Chris Hillman takes over the lead vocals on "Both of Us (Bound to Lose)." Electric piano, Latin beats. It's dreamy. One of the best songs on the album. Side Two is called "The Wilderness" and is country/bluegrass. A fiddle and harmonizing vocals on "Fallen Eagle." "So Begins the Task" has a steel guitar and rich harmonies. This song reminded me of "Marrakesh Express." Side Three is the folk-rock "Consider." It has the first single "It Doesn't Matter." This is more traditional rock...layered guitars and harmonies. Stills giving some of his opinions on Crosby and Nash. "The Lone Gangster" got my attention with its wah-wah guitar. Side Four "Rock & Roll is Here to Stay" is rock and blues and my favorite of the four sides. "Right Now" is the most rockin' song on the album. It has the fastest pace and sounds urgent. Slide guitar. Piano. I'm thinking hes taking swipes again at Crosby and Nash and former girlfriend Rita Coolidge. The album ends with a slow blues acoustic guitar number in "Blues Man." It's a tribute to Hendrix, Al Wilson and Duane Allman. This is a lot of music and is musically very busy with 7+ instruments going off sometimes simultaneously. There is a variety of styles but the constant for the most part was Stephen Stills' voice. That was kind of getting to me as were the CSN sounding harmonies. No doubt, the mmusicianship and song structure are top notch. The lyrics are strong. If you are Crosby, Stills and Nash fan, you should find this enjoyable.

Some good tracks but nothing great and got me excited to hear the next track. I tink a solid 3 is a perfect rating.

Fun for a bit but not for over an hour, give us a break Stephen.

i came away from manassas with more appreciation for stephen stills. of the supergroup CSNY, stills was the last one to prove their significance to me. i can't say i was wowed by this album, so i'm at a middle-of-the-road 3, but i appreciate his songwriting and music creation now. tied with his buffalo springfield roots, this album does have more of a country and blues tilt. it wasn't easy listening like how yacht rock is, but there was that general ease that comes from blues music. and i say this even with manassas being a double album! the last song acted as a tribute to recently deceased musicians/friends. having "blues man" as the closing track of a supergroup's debut album tugs at the old heartstrings. "such a waste, left such a space."

Here I was thinking Manassas was just the name of the album, but it is actually the name of the band too, fronted by Stephen Stills! I had never heard of this Stills project before, so I was certainly intrigued. I was not surprised to hear the folk, country, blues, and rock influences on this album. What I was surprised to hear was the touch of Latin sounds permeating this album! Speaking of the Latin sounds, Side A on this double album was dedicated heavily to that sound, I noticed, with other sides focusing in other areas. It was a neat way to organize the album by themes, and yet even when considered as a whole the double album sounded altogether cohesive, too. I can see where this album was incredibly influential, too. Arriving in 1971, nearly all of the genres on display here seemed to be in incredibly "mature" forms...all of this sounds like music from much later in the 1970s. It's wild to think that this multi-genre album was likely influencing the future of ALL of the multiple genres represented here. There are a lot of band members here, and they're all great representatives of their particular role in the band. This is a full-sounding, well done album. I'd rate it higher than a 3 for sure, but not quite high enough for a 4.

Good collection. Not so keen on the Byrds twangy country section, but the rest is high class CSN&Y. 3.5

A supremely talented musician and songwriter, and this is a fine album.

Good drivin’ music.

Yeah, man. Just yeah. Gimme all the generic white dude 70s rock. I’ve been in such a rut with this project, but this could be an uptick. It’s a bit too long, too many noodling tracks at the end, but it’s Saturday so whatever. You go, Stills, you go.

Waaaaay too long! You can’t listen to this album and be grumpy at the same time. It’s hard to be mad at it. It just feels good all the way through. It is upstaged quite a bit by the songwriting genius of both CSN and Harvest which came out the same year, but I don’t think it’s totally fair to compare them. This is a different vision of that sound. I just was always waiting for the song to appear, but they rarely materialized. I thought the playing was terrific. Wild reading the harrowing stories of making this album and working under a cocaine-addled Stephen Stills for 100 hours a session! I liked it. 3/5

A great advert for double albums that might have made decent single albums. Sprawling, at times repetitive within each of the genres and could have done with a bit of sorting and editing. As a result the good points are diluted in a lot of so so tracks.

S'écoute bien, fait souvent penser à du Steely Dan. Ça fait un son vraiment carefree, idéal pour l'été. C'est un peu long par contre. 6/10

Sounds familiar, I guess I've been listening to a lot of this era music on the 1001.

This was a pretty fun listen - very repetitive, and I'm kind of done with the early-70s country-folk-blues-rock by white guys schtick - but it was done well. Colorado was a lovely song.

I don’t know SS from any of his solo work, and barely know him from his supergroup work with CSNY, but I enjoyed the first half of this album. I liked the song Jet Set a lot. Good intro to SS.

Stretches on a bit long, but he's a hell of a bluesy guitar player. 3/5

Some very nice tunes. Growly guitar, I like that. Jesus, always good. Slide guitar. It's a little bit country, it's a little bit rock and roll. 3 / 5 stars.

It was okay, but nothing special. Just some good folk rock.

missing CNY

I liked this album more than I thought I might, much better than Neil Young. (although what isn’t). I think that the album was a little long, but overall it was pretty good.

Hearing Stephen Stills' voice with a warm early 70s analog mix instantly turns me back into a 5yr old at the whim of dad's record player or AM radio in the station wagon. Problems with this (double) album are more than just that it's long; it more-than-occasionally threatens my tolerance for rootsy American rock (e.g. I don't like any of the country-tinged tracks on side 2 ("The Wilderness") of 4 - everything from track 6-11 is totally skippable for me). It's better on vinyl since you (I) can easily never put on side 2. Side 3 ("Consider") is so CSN in that apparently Stills almost actually named it "CSN" - I like 1 and 3 best; 4 is a little too clichéd early 70s rock. Obviously such a mixed bag, I could probably cut this down to a selective 8 song album to make it a high 4 but the bloat is way too much. 5/10 3 stars

Pretty good for boomer music

A lot of range on this album. I liked some of the bluegrass inspired tunes and songs that were a little more proggy, but there was some other stuff that kind of fell flat. Not bad overall.

super mid album. I would have given it a 3, but it's 21 songs for no good reason. 2.5/5

Some really good stuff! Enjoyed the variety of blues, bluegrass, and vocals.

I've now had Stephen Stills' ambitious project "Manassas" on my list to review for a number of months. I've listened to it a few times in that period, and each time it has passed by perfectly pleasantly, like a summer's afternoon or an episode of Bake Off. The problem is this: Stephen Stills and his various folk-rock entourages have about as many albums in the 1001 club as there are summer afternoons or episodes of Bake Off. After so many, a bright blue sky is just air, a gorgeously presented gateau is just sugar, and a Stephen Stills-featuring album is just nice. The most interesting thing about "Manassas" (named after Stills' latest band, formed with restless ex-Byrd and Burrito Brother Chris Hillman) is that its loose structure allows a little more genre experimentation than Stills had done in the past, complimented by his ever-expanding ensemble and broadening horizons. The album is split into four sides: the first a homage to rock and Latin, while the second goes country/bluegrass, the third goes folk and the fourth opts for blues jams. My favourites were probably the middle two-sides, which seemed to have the giddiest, most care-free energy. "Colorado" and "So Begins the Task" are both standouts on the country end: breezy, lilting, highway-in-California-with-the-roof-down kind of songs. "Don't Look at My Shadow" is a buoyant, cartoonish bluegrass to send us skipping merrily into sunset. On the third side, "Johnny's Garden" and "How Far" are commendable folk-ish cuts. There are a handful of other highlights across the rest of the record: "Both of Us (Bound to Lose)" begins in plain beige dad-rock colours, before an explosion of Latin percussion and piano rhythms brings the song to a dazzling, technicolour close. The rest is middling and feels a little too inconsequential to reward repeated listens, with the final side in particular dragging its heels in self-indulgence. "Manassas" doesn't provoke a particularly strong reaction in me at any point - there's little sense of grit or emotion in these songs - but, like most Crosby Stills and Nash I've heard, it rarely stoops below a decent listen.

All of your favorite Crosby, Stills and Nash songs were written and sung by Stills. Same with Buffalo Springfield (it might just be the one Springfield song you've heard ad nauseam). Stills was apparently the first person to be elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. In the same year. So with that kind of resumé, this sort of pales. It's fine, nothing terribly memorable, nothing you'd hurry up and skip either. I suspect to hear more of Mr. Stills on at least one CSN album that will show up here, along with Buffalo Springfield. So we've awarded him plenty.

Meg, it's fine. I can't really even muster up a solid review, but I don't hate it... so I guess that's alright.

This is pretty solid, I dig the vibe and all the awesome musical intricacies going on here... but this is starting to blend in with all the other 60s and 70s rock we've listened to so far and I think that's a big shame. Having said all that... i could only make it through about 10 of the 21 songs on this album, they were mostly fine, my favorite song of them was definitely "Both of Us", I loved the percussion.

Not for me

Enjoyed the two listens, would explore the lyrics and music further.

Stephen Stills serves you up a pleasant rock album that's slightly Southern fried on the one hand — a dash of Lynyrd Skynyrd, a sprinkle of the Allman Brothers — and a little meat 'n' potatoes country-folk on the other — a pinch of John Denver, etc. As a meal, there are a few great tracks but also a few bites too many (like so many double albums of the time). I was ready to excuse myself from the table before it was done.

I'm not familiar with Stephen Stills, and I went into this feeling a bit skeptical just due to the genre fusion listed here. Rock, country, folk, psychedelic rock, and singer-songwriter? That's a lot of things and I wasn't sure how it was going to work. Turns out it works just fine. The music is pleasant throughout and there was nothing grating, nothing that made me want to skip a song or anything. However, I did find the majority of the album to be kind of boring, which is not at all what I expected. There were a few great songs on here that I'm sure I'll come back to, but I can't imagine I'll ever listen to this entire album again. Standout Tracks: "It Doesn't Matter," "Jet Set (Sigh)," "Song of Love," "Rock and Roll Crazies / Cuban Bluegrass"

Pretty good. I want this CD. 3/2/23

Liked the more folk rock songs, didn't care for the more bluesy numbers.

'Colorado' is a very nice song. The rest of the album is fine, but way too long. Those Moog interludes can take a dive too. I love the sound of they way they used to record drums in the early 70s. The drumming sounds amazing throughout. Doubt I'd every listen to this as an album again though. I guess that evens out to a three.

It’s a decent album, nothing objectionable about it, it’s just not really my style and wayyy too long

I like how this is broken into 4 parts based on the sides of the vinyl. It is a bit long though and the middle is definitely slow at points. They are some great jams and songs in there. It’s crazy how much Stills pushed to get this finished and I do enjoy the country rock stylings of Chris Hillman. Not exactly a masterpiece, but would come back to this one.

This was a long album full of songs I kind of liked

The sounds are certainly true to the genre, and there are some winners, but overall, I feel the strength of the songs falls short of a 4.

Okay and stuff

learn "blues man" riff

A hard sort to review as I know I just like this blues country rock genre. Going for 3 as I enjoyed it all the way through and a couple of hooks stood out but not higher as felt no urge to listen to any of them again.

I’m not sure I needed to listen to this. It’s fine, just nothing out of the ordinary. Stills is still great, though, so I don’t wanna diss it too much.

HL: "Jesus Gave Love Away For Free", "Colorado", "It Doesn't Matter", "Move Around" First I'm hearing of the supergroup known as Manassas. I did appreciate how each side is curated by style/genre; my favourite might be the country/western side 2 somehow. So points for organization, and points taken off for the bloat shared by its contemporaries "Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs" & "All Things Must Pass", without the soaring heights of "Layla" or even "Frankie Crisp". January 14, 2023 Note to self: doing this 1st thing in the morning just works

A Laurel Canyon hootenanny. A fun listen for an insight into these rockers' creative process, but not something I'd put on heavy rotation.

I didn’t have a lot time to listen to this, so maybe a second or third listen would have brought a few things to the surface that I would have found more palatable, so I’ll add a point. I liked the songs on side 4 best, the “rock n’ roll” side.

Didn’t know this. Interesting mix of rock and roll and bluegrass etc.

A rockin journey through the Southern States locked in the boot of a car. Please let me out.

classic rock. tooooo long. toooo many ideas. some truly good radio repeats. starts strong and fizzles by the end. whatever. probably more like a 2.5.

Quality musicians, good range of music…but nothing to grab my attention.

Notes - Debut album by Stephen stills’ band manassas - Split into 4 sections, each with their own genre and style - Rock, bluegrass, folk, blues - Sections 2 and 4 less effective - The folk-rock sections are best - Featuring Chris hillman of the Byrds! - Part of the Crosby stills Nash and young cinematic universe - This album is so long, 21 songs - Could’ve been 12/13 fav - it doesn’t matter - great harmonies and phaser-y guitars Least fav - dont look at my shadow - biy too yeehaw 3/5 - pretty good but needed more focus and finesse

J’ai l’impression qu’il s’agit d’un album exemplaire d’une époque, avec les guitares, les voix en harmonie. J’aime bien, sans plus.

This was pretty good, some surprisingly heavy tracks (Stills has an almost grungy tone to his voice which was very unexpected considering the release date of this) and a nice blend of southern rock and folk subgenres. Pretty damn long but it changed things up just enough

This was pretty close to getting a 2, but it still consistently had things that I liked. It felt very long. Not much to say. Most of it wasn't my thing. My favourite song was It Doesn't Matter.

Stephen Stills is, to my ear, undeniably talented as a writer, singer, guitarist, and performer. It shines through on this album. No fault of his own, stylistically I'm not as close to what the tracks on this album sound like as I used to be. While the collegiate-aged me would have loved this, it's not so much my preference these days. Great work, though. Truly.

Some amazing songs and a nice vibe for the most part. Downside is that it is way too long and overflowing with hippy dribble. Stills filter was a bit broken, wasn't it

This album had a lot of stuff I like but I just wasn’t that into it. I guess it’s safe to say that Stills is not my favorite voice from CSNY

Standard American folk rock . Nothing really stood out for me. Competently performed, average singing, good songwriting.

It's a real 70's American vibe and I like it.

Colorado sticks on on this one so far. I am a bit hot and cold when it comes to this "Americana" style country/folk from the 60s/70s. Sometimes I like the twanginess and other times it's just not what I want to hear. This one is a bit more soulful so I like it, but probably not something that will stay in rotation a ton for me.

Preferred the first half of the album, which was more rock centric to the more country/bluegrass vibes of the second half. Reminiscent of what was to become with Crosby stills Nash and young. Acid rock meets the stones with a fiddle in the middle.

Great old school classic rock. Nice slide playing, traditional song structures, unfamiliar songs with a familiar vocalist from his other projects.

Second half of the album saved this one for me Also, lyrics to The Love Gangster are top notch

Solid album but doesn't feel revolutionary or a must listen to me. I have to give him credit for a song about my home state though. Best Songs: Both of Us, Hide It so Deep Worst Songs: Jesus Gave Love Away for Free, What to Do

It's well produced and there are some beautiful moments - but on the whole not outstanding for me

definitely came from the 70s. it was okay, but i don’t think i would listen to this casually.

Of CSN and sometimes Y (I laughed way too hard writing that, curse my Dad and his love of tagging me in dad jokes on Facebook), I probably listen to Stills the least. And I certainly hadn't heard of this band from one of their breaks. This is a good album, though it skews more bluesy than I typically prefer. I tend to like the more folk rock aspects of CSNY. Some of this hits that spot but most falls in that blues route. "Jet Set (Sigh)" was probably my favorite track, it was a great blues song that had an exciting turn at the end of it. I do find it hilarious that all four members of CSNY had an album in the top five at the same time, though two of them were together on an album.

3.5/5. A bit self-indulgent, it seems like every one of these artists has this need to make a double album to prove themselves. The results can be mixed.

A good bit better than expected, though it definitely leans more towards quantity than quality.

p270. 1972. 3 stars CSNY meet the Byrds and Merle Haggard. Well done of its kind, but not many standout songs. It frequently strays into musical wankage and outstays its welcome. Would have been a far better single album.

Rock blues country

I have yet to find a double album that really needed to be a double album. The wiki page for this one is a headscratcher too - they had 84-hour recording sessions and at one point Stills was in the studio for 106 hours(!) for...this? It's not bad by any means but it doesn't exactly scream of the wild mad genius you'd expect from that sort of production. Don't get me wrong, it's fun in places (What To Do is probably my favourite track) but a lot of it just feels very standard. I guess that's hindsight for you.

1972, американец Stephen Stills - человек и пароход. Блюз, фолк, кантри.

Fíla þetta.

not that special to me

Percebe-se claramente a qualidade do guitarrista envolvendo o rock, blues e country. Só não empolga nas melodias.

Country-folk, ma comunque non bruttissimo. Bella allegra 'fallen eagle'

Banans

Not on Spotify - Joe Rogan sucks! Pleasant enough, but pretty old sounding and very samey all the way through.

Rock tranquilo, muy clásico, muy de los 70, muy americano, con un estilo definido. En ocasiones country, en otras un tanto más movido

I mean...this album is solidly, enjoyably okay. Would I re-listen a lot? No, but there are some interesting tracks on here. Not sure how to describe this one. Honky tonk blues? In any case, I liked it a good bit but it stops short of killer tracks or any real love for the style here. But yeah, I'd give this a halfhearted endorsement. Why not? Fave track: Hide It So Deep

Never listened to Stephen stills record before. It was worth a listen but won’t be in a rush to listen to another.

Certainly a lot more interesting than I was expecting. Still not something that's immediately going on a playlist. Fave: Don'y Look at My Shadow

Not my bag baby...

Alright

3 stars. Lots of pretty good songs. Would like to here more of Steven stills

Not on spotify

I often skip Stills, and this album makes me wonder why. It was a good listen.

3/5 interesting, but...

Started out so banging. Some solid southern rock. Kind of devolved a bit into some boring early 70s rock. Some great songs on here though.

Vraiment bcp trop d'albums de rock boomer américain dans cette liste quand même Prefs: Anyway, Both Of Us (Bound to Lose), Johnny's Garden, Move Around, Right Now, The Treasure - Take One Moins pref: Jesus Gave Love Away For Free

The best of this album IMO: - Song of Love - Blues Man A nice balance of folk, country, rock and blues. Their blues and rock songs are the best of this album. I'm less a fan of folk. 3.1/5

I imagine bell bottoms and handle bars. I get it that this was a project for Stephen Stills, later of CSNY, to get out his solo material. That is all. He put out a great vibe with Manassas and then an amazing vibe down the road.

Middle of the road 70's production. Mostly filler songs except for 2, which are quite good: Song of Love and Colorado.

Good lyrics. Good vocal. Good talent. Just not my thing.

Not bad but also felt repetitive and too laid back for my taste. I want a spicy beat!

"middle of the nothing" music; it is what it is

Adequate blues/folk/country album. Rating might have gone up to 4 upon repeat listens, but for now it is just okay, so 3 stars.

Some chill country - I enjoyed 'Colorado'. I haven't listened to Stills or Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young before so glad to find something new.

Pleasant enough bit of country rock.

good, I guess, but not my jam

Half of this was really good

Слишком много сраного кантри

I probably like something from every band associated with Stephen Stills. "So Begins the Task" and "Johnny's Garden" were interesting enough to make me pause to see what track was playing. I heard some elements that made me think of Southern Rock. This album also includes some fiddle and pedal steel for an occasional classic country vibe. Overal the album was fine.

did not need to be that long

Solid Americana folk rock. Ends strong with “The Treasure” and “Blues Man”. Guitar work is above average.

fine, liked him better when he met up with Crosby and Nash.

I am not sure what this album wanted to be. I has rock, country, funk, and blues. Some of it was good. Some of it not so good.

Now, this! Was, ok ish. I guess! Not jaw dropping, not shit. Certainly not something I’d ever turn down again and I’m pretty sure I’m going to end up buying it. Bloody enjoyable without blowing any baws off y’know?
