Reviews (page 6 of 8)

First few tracks pleasant ambient music, the second side slightly less so and Hero (a track wikipedia claims is influential) is just crap! Not a great album IMO

Good music, not really feeling it currently though.

OK Album

This is a weird one for me because I expected to enjoy the rock half more than the electronic half but I felt the rock songs were really poorly done, I know this is one of those proper “music nerd” albums but it’s just not for me. 3/5 though because the first half is cool.

Weird, eclectic, and yet interesting. Each song seems like a different genre. 3.5/5.

Not at all what I thought I would get in this listen but I found it actually quite good. It's a bit background-y, for the most part, but a couple of livelier tunes are sprinkled in to spice it up nicely.

Second half much more listenable and lively than the first but still lacks edge

pretty ok 3

Spotify didn't have 'After Eight' available, sadly. Overall it was good, Neu! would fit right in with the indie scene of today, but I'm a baby and songs longer than like 5 minutes (that aren't by Meat Loaf) test my attention span.

Some nice atmospheric music in the first part, 2nd part was ok.

Nothing I wanted to hear again but I will give it points because it was ahead of its time for its sound.

Didn’t actually finish the album but the first part had very cool slow piano, not what I expected at all

Krautrock is something that’s never really triggered anything with me, not sure why, I think mainly due to how non-descript it all is. Each track blends into the other to such a degree that it’s indiscernible the differences. However, this was pleasant enough. The bar is that I wouldn’t actively seek it out, but also wouldn’t switch it off if it was on. Take that as you will. Standard three star review.

Fav tracks: Isi, E-musik

Interesting but I did not like it enough to buy it.

Disco pausado, relajado, con reminiscencias de los 70. Un tanto de la época. Fácil de escuchar, pero no destaca especialmente

Enjoyed this. Great music to work to...

Album sperimentale, niente di così brutto, niente di così bello

3.5, had its moments but no Kraftwerk

I really liked the first three songs - they were so calm and I felt like I could fall asleep to them. It lost me a bit in the second half though.

Interesting

Good to listen to in the background. I thought the first half was really beautiful and interesting and the second half was not as good.

Some of these songs were really interesting. It's labeled as an electronic album, but I could hear some rock in there too. Pretty cool album for 1975 though. Feels ahead of its time. Nice album to wrap up the week.

Krautrock. Seems a bit derogatory, no? Apparently it's a broad term for German experimental/psych rock bands that incorporated different electronic and ambient elements. Can is in that group, and after Tago Mago last week, I've got an appetite for "kosmische musik"--yes, I am going to distance myself from the other genre label as it was invented by none other than the English as a "humorous umbrella category" that many artists underneath that umbrella didn't appreciate. Let's do better. Never heard Neu, they (at least on this album) lean into the low-key/ambient side of things, which isn't a bad thing at all. Only six tracks and an average runtime of about seven minutes. I was hoping I'd pull more out of here to save, but the double-edged sword of ambient stuff like this is that it inevitably transports and I have a harder time grasping tracks as it's one long odyssey. Still, this is a good one. I look forward to some other kosmische stuff, maybe Kraftwerk? Favorite tracks: Seeland, E-Musik. Album art: NEU! What else am I supposed to say about this? 3.5/5

Favourites: -ISI -Hero I don't really like just instrumental music, but the ones that had some lyrics where kinda good

me gusto no entendi mucho el concepto siento pero me gusto hallo susi guten morgen komm wir spielen komm komm komm

I have mixed feelings, I was originally pleasantly surprised, I really like "Leb Wohl" because of how lovely it sounded, the "Hero" came on and it got weird, very weird

Last song wasn't available but this was pretty good. First half was pleasant ambient, second half more rock.

pianon pimputusesque style album. menee biisistä toiseen = mahtava konsepti. tuo hero kappale keskellä vähänä kakka vaikka ok biisi .. meikä poika vähän skippaili kahden minuutin cooldowneja pitemmpien kappaleiden loppuun ei nyt ehkö ollut paras kuuntelukerta kelpo teos kiinnostava varsinkin aikakautensa takia e-musik

This went by really quickly and didn't leave much of an impression, I think lots of the sounds reminded me of BBC educational programmes/look around you? Not much like kraftwerk so I'd clearly not understood krautrock before. Yeah it was alright.

Quite enjoyed this for the most part.... Think I preferred the first 3 songs to the rest. The more atmospheric ones were better then the punky ones imo. Without those songs I probably would've given it a 4. Still enjoyed it though Bet this was pretty innovative in 1975. Very public service broadcastingy again

A relaxing morning listen. Not bad at all.

First three tracks were a snoozer, last three were more interesting.

Nice background music. 1001 albums you want to hear in an elevator or Dr’s waiting room.

The last Krautrock album was solid, this one not so much. Not bad, I could see listening cases, but overall not for me. I guess I'm glad to have become aware of the genre.

Is the term 'krautrock' acceptable in 2023? Either way, this is a fine example of it (or whatever term we should be using). Driving futurescapes of tracks with a few mellower, ambient moments. Great to run to and think of concrete skyscrapers and monorails. Apparently the two band leaders each had different philosophies for this album, so split it down the middle, with one taking side A and the other side B. Frankly, I didn't notice any great difference. Maybe the second half was a little more crunchy and rocky, but I liked both. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Isi Date listened: 22/01/23

A bit nothingy. Good nothing, mind. A decent record.

This album starts very chill, gets a bit annoying halfway and ends chill again.

Bit of an odd one. Very decent background album

good enough in the background but didn't manage to hold my attention.

Background music, quite good

Interesting album. Certainly doesn’t sound like it’s almost 50 years old. I can see how this was influential. At the end of the day, I don’t necessarily need to listen to it again. For me, it doesn’t go at the top of a list, but I recognize what I’m listening to.

Electrónica, ambiente.

Interesting

This was strange, but I kinda liked it. It was like a cross between prog rock, punk, and stripped down electro a la Kraftwerk. I'd probably listen to a couple of tracks again. 2.5 stars (wish this thing had half stars for rating).

Very chill but I don't really care for it all that much.

Pretty bad, but 3 I think

second time i listened to this album and i liked it a lot better

Background music. Taking up space on this list.

Very good 3.5

Decent but repetitive.

Very interesting contrast in styles. The first half is ambient Krautrock which abruptly morphs into the German Rolling Stones. Very odd. The reviews seem to be equally polarised between 1s and 5s. I normally love these albums but this left me cold.

First and likely only listen. Nothing I would recommend.

Nice music

A predominantly instrumental album by Neu, however nonetheless a decent listen. The contrasting styles of the two halves of the album weren't too conflicting and overall complemented each other well. Best: Hero Worst: Leb' Wohl

So peaceful in the first half, then the vocals of the second half lost me a bit

un joli début (quel est le fil conducteur ?)

Music in the form of Getty stock images. You could paste a lot of this into an advert or presentation without anyone noticing.

Not a bad listen but it would have been nice with some vocals.

%/& noise

3.5. An intriguing album that sounds fresh almost 50 years on. Some interesting tracks that sound like soundtracks. Unfortunately several of the tracks feel like filler. Standouts: Seeland, E-Musik.

Pretty ambient music for side one then fairly unfocused “punky” rock music, although E-Music was quite good. I think I can hear influence on Stereolab.

Liked it. Had a good vibe

Kinda just alright. I think I enjoyed the first half of ambient songs over the alternative rock of the second. None of it too bad but none of it amazing. 6/10

I've visited this album many times over the years, but I tend to stick with the first two tracks (which are wonderfully executed examples of tasteful minimalist rock). The rest of the record doesn't cut it for me: I could do without the weird, silly hippy whispering in 'Leb'Wohl'. The rocker tracks on side two are a bit bland (even though they inspired David Bowie to write his \"Heroes\" album).

Quintessential Krautrock! Enjoyed this as background music, but won't enter my regular listening rotation.

What a weird album. To me this was more of a musical score album than anything else, which isn’t a bad thing, it just wasn’t what I expected as a Krautrock album. A lot of it was quite pretty, although repetitive

Instrumental songs were great background music. Stick to instrumentals...

Not a bad little krautrock album

Happy little Monday rocker.... Not alot of lyrics but easy to listen to

not my type of stuff but enjoyable

can appreciate what it was for the time and the talent that was involved but even after giving it a few goes, it doesn’t quick click with me. build ups and layering are cool.

Just because it’s ALT!

Too rainy to run 😔

Good music but no vocals means it prolly won’t go to any playlist but may fit a vibe later

Not bad

Easy to listen to.

had me going between a 2 an 3. Not my style but I recognized plenty of the tracks, so it must have resonated with me somewhere

It is a rare album that could have influenced both punk and ambient artists. That said, it's wildly inconsistent, with it's moody, melodic side 1 and an aggressive side 2. I like Seeland and Leb Wohl on side 1. Hero is a good proto punk song, if a bit long. E-Musik and the rest I could do without.

I listened to a lot of Krautrock in the 70s but I favoured the more electronic sounds of Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Ash Ra Tempel etc. But there’s no doubt that Neu was one of the seminal bands of this era. There are some good driving, propulsive rhythms here and they would have been cool to listen to while cruising down the autobahn, but there’s also quite a bit of filler here so it gets a middling 3 stars.

Eh...it's fine enough I guess? There are a couple of bops on here but overall could live without it. Fave track: E-Musik. Weirdly good walking music.

Predominantly instrumental with heavy use of synths and piano. Minimalist at times, soundscape (thunderstorm, waves), and pre-punk elements. An unusual and pleasant listening experience. Good background music.

Was not familiar with this band. Had occasionaly listened to another German band - Tangerine Dream. Much preferred British prog-rock from the same time period.

I can see why this is on here because it sounds similar to current ambient/indie music and was ahead of its time. However, I can't envision myself seeking this out to listen on purpose.

Preferred the ambient aide

Pretty great album that seems very ahead of its time. Kind of wish the ambient stuff and the heavier stuff blended together a bit more rather than having a halfway split, but I enjoyed this quite a lot

Long long ago I remember listening to this and being so glad when the vocals and bass kicked in… still felt the same today.

2 stars for side A and 4 stars for side B

Relaxing at times, sure, but totally forgettable. Just a "whatever" album. 5/10.

NEU! For those who don't know, it's the German word for "NEW!". Imagine walking along a record store and seeing a black album with the word "NEW!" proudly sprawled across it. It's a bit of a clever name, I guess. Aaaand... it's probably new back in '75. An album with ambient in the first half and protopunk on the second one? That's pretty new. At its best, however, it's just interesting. The exploration in protopunk and the ambient bits are both nice and chill. But they are only fine together if one sees this as an exploration of sound. Otherwise, it would be an inconsistent, boring trip. It's very unlikely for me to come back to it. There's Kraftwerk and Brian Eno if I want some ambient music, and there's The Stooges if I want some good protopunk.

The instrumental songs were decent, but Hero was absolutely awful.

Krautrock eh? So this is what it's come to. It wasn't too bad. This kind of music isn't for me, but it was a pleasant enough listen the whole way through while I was working. Ambient background music that boosted productivity. Is that a compliment? I don't think so. But maybe these Krauts would take it as one.

3/5 nice but not enough

Alright, didn’t blow me away

weird and funky.

Neu is band whose influence exceed their quality. The music is good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s superceded by the myriads of bands that took what they did and expanded upon it. That being said, it and their debut (which is suprisingly not on here) should certainly be listened before you die. It gets a 3 because 😈

very immersive

This is the third album from the German rock band Neu!. It's an experimental rock album commonly referred to as krautrock for its emergence in Germany, and in fact this album is one of this unique genre's creators. The music is a combination of progressive rock and electronica. The album is actually split between sides, as one is the older Neu! style of ambient pop/rock tracks, and the second side is more experimental proto-punk / krautrock tracks. The tracks are hypnotic, day dream causing melodies that will nicely compliment any activity. Want some club music? The second side of the album is for you. Want soothing music to relax to? Then listen to the first side of the album. I loved this interesting album and will be on the lookout for more music like this. Every rock fan should listen to this German classic!

Decent

Weird mix, but I liked most of it

A sonic adventure that feels like it influenced a lot of music.

1001 albums that got us from The Damned to Flock of Seagulls

Up, up, up, down, up, down

I actually didn't mind this. I liked 1st half ambient better than 2nd half!

Good for driving, I guess.

Not at all what I expected based on the cover. Super chill thinking music

Gary Neu-man ?

Lately I've been hung up on stoner/sludge rock and bands like Elder, If These Trees Could Talk, and Russian Circles. I really enjoy how their albums fuse together the movements and diversity of sound that you would find in classical music, with the instrumentation and overall sensibility of prog-rock/metal. This album scratches similar itch for me. Between that and tracks like 'Isi', 'Hero' and 'After Eight' sounding like direct influences for LCD Soundsystem, this is definitely an album I can enjoy.

pretty good, 3/5

Intéressant. Hero détonne un peu sur cet album, mais ça n’en fait pas une mauvaise pièce.

Neu! are... new to me. I'v never felt brave enough to dive into Krautrock. This doesn't sound like it was recorded in 1975. It's not exactly a whistle happy sing-a-long album, more of a film soundtrack waiting to happen. It provided a decent wfh companion.

Mainly instrumental and not half bad.

I couldn't quite believe this entire album was made by the same artist. First few tracks made me think of Osric Tentacles meets Kraftwerk, then it morphed into something else completely different.

Some nice easy sounds - preferred the ones without voice, nice sound building on a couple

Set a pleasant mood. Good for cinematic background noise.

Not sure what this was, but it wasn't bad. It generated a decent playlist after.

um okay x that one clock ticking song was torture

Needs more listens before rating properly

A decent vibe here and sounds way ahead of its time. Maybe only ten years ahead of its time, but still. It stayed in the background, but it had some pep.

Hard to know what to make of this, as it frustrates as often as it delights, frequently within the same track. Yet its influence is beyond question - the fingerprints of 'Isi' are found on a slew of contemporary synth acts. It also happens to be a gorgeous piece of music in it's own right.

I like the vibes. Very vibey. If it were a sex toy, it’d be a vibrator. An instrument, the vibraphone. I need to do my homework on this whole scene. Kraftwerk, Can, Neu! Who else do I need to check out?

ehhhhh I wasn't super keen on this one. Not bad to have on in the background though.

Ken always tried to get me to listen to Krautrock, but I usually found it quite difficult if not completely unlistenable. This was actually pretty enjoyable.

First time listening to this band. An album of its geography and time, but still works today. A good example of how to use the medium with two contrasting 'suites', with the soothing soundscape of the first setting up the more clattering second.

Liked how its divided in two very different halves!

Liked the first through tracks but then got samey

Not bad. Worth another listen

Pretty cool, but didn't dig the change of vibes on the second half. Cool synth stuff though

This was different than I was expecting. I REALLY enjoyed the first half that was really chill and relaxing and calming. The harder, wilder stuff was cool too, just a little jarring after the first few songs.

Most of this album is much more soothing than I was expecting haha. Probably will not listen again.

at times it was exciting, mostly just droned on... not in a bad way, but eh

Chill electronic rock bem maneirinho

It's basically two different albums on each side. Side A was kinda boring but pretty. Side B was much more in my wheelhouse. Hero is a fun song and I can see why it's consider influential / proto-punk. Interesting album but not sure if I'll revisit

Instrumentals were good, vocal tracks not so much.

Didn’t finish.

Instrumentals were really really fun, loved the atmosphere and like reminds me of the national's sleep well beast. Solid album but the vocals can be forgettable sometimes so dropping this to a 3

This was all over the place. Some good stuff some not. Three stars.

More German music. Starts very atmospheric and has sea, bird and plane(?) sounds in it. Vocals come in on the fourth track and then on the B-side. Interesting for sure, and very variable. E-musik's chugging guitar sounds almost exactly like a train. Wikipedia mentions summer heat vibes which I can agree with. Don't rate the last track (After Eight) very much.

Nie was von gehört, aber ein ganz schönes Gesamtpaket!

Sehr erstaunliche Musik. Gut, werde ich aber nie wieder hören

I love a bit of kosmische, but Neu! have never been my favourite for whatever reason. On this album, I think maybe the spacey ambient music and the rock elements are too separate maybe, so it feels like a record of two halves. I also don't love the vocals, and find the final track a bit weak. Still a quality recording. It's interesting how "Hero" foreshadows post-punk, even though this a few years prior to "punk proper". I'm thinking 3.5 for this. I hope there are plenty of other albums in this genre on the list.

i've listened to the 1972 album a few times and enjoyed it, don't know why i never thought to listen to the back catalogue. on the whole pretty good. tracks 2 &3 should have been later in the album, you can't start an album with a good tempo hit us with a wall of slow downbeat and then just pick it up again. crazy germans don't know shit about planning an album, where's my roller coaster of emotions?

Started well but then went down hill.

Tiene más valor como ruptura en su época que musical como lo que es. Es decir, abrió camino, pero no es nada que no haya sido mejorado. Hay una canción bonita con sonidos de mar.

I really enjoyed this. Quite a contrast between the chilled out 'Seeland' and the more 'in your face' 'Hero'. 'Hero' came across as the kind of thing a 70s punk bank would do if they were told to put a tranquil spin on a tune. I almost put a 4 for this one as sonically, this is right up my street, especially the early songs. It's just not something I'm going to be listening to much and I'm a bit 'take it or leave it' with the punk vocal. Might regret not giving this a 4 but for the fact that I won't be inclined to listen to this too much, I'm going to stick with a 3.

Quite good. Probably ahead of its time.

Good background music

Enjoyable. Slow in parts, but enjoyed this whilst I was working.

Go on the Krautrocks. Thomas Tuchel loves it. He's tops off on the autobahn.

I'd never heard this before. Slower than I was expecting but still right up my street

Its like a stadium soundtrack for an empty stadium. an audience of 1 or no one. Ambient rock. which is cool if that's your thing. Its a cool contrast between desolation and life. order and void.

couldn’t make heads or tails of this album. it wasn’t bad but it was strange.

nice, but overstays its welcome

Surprisingly good and interesting krautrock. I've never been a huge fan of the genre, but this album is worth the listen.

Great background ambient music, I was listening while I worked and some of the songs were very effective. Highlights: -Isi -Hero -E-musik

Mostly chill

This was a nice surprise. A weird mix of instrumental, punk and new age ambient!

Fav Song: Seeland

Nice background music but didn't stand out

leb wohl fajne plaza morze vibe pogg reszta utworow w sumie git ale jakos nie rozjebalo mnie

Great Monday morning album, timeless!

David Bowie specifically names this album as an influence on his German era, which is very evident, especially once you know that fact. This is by far the most listenable of any album I've had so far with the label of krautrock. I'm still not sure I want to voluntarily spend time with it. It was fine. Best track: After Eight

Interesting instrumentals!

Not bad, couple tracks knocked it down more than the good ones lifted it.

When you start breaking out genres to Krautrock, you're probably reaching a bit. Still, it is interesting music. But not that interesting. I'll wait and see if it catches on, then I will make a decision.

it felt like i was listening to The Sims music

They play this at the spa when I'm getting a massage (I thought for the first two tracks). I don't mind the ambient-y stuff, but didn't enjoy the vocalizations in leb wohl/hero. That really took it down a point for me, 2*

Once again, another album that I just sat and scratched my head after the album was over asking myself "What about this album makes it so important that it makes it on this list?" I'm not impressed or disappointed, just merely confused. It's not groundbreaking, not inspiring, not doing anything that anyone else hasn't done before - especially in 2001 where this sound was pretty much "old school". I'll leave this one on this list and hopefully it'll never be relevant in my life again. 4/10

Välillä ihan jees ambienssia mutta ärsyttää aina kun lauaminen kappaleissa on jotain ihme mölinää josta ei saa selvää ⭐⭐

Not my bag at all

First track was great but the rest reminded me of the stuff my school would play when it was time to study

boring

I'm confiscating your exclamation mark. You haven't earned it at all. Boring.

Blind album and artist. Not sure if I'll ever enjoy this album as a whole bunch 1 or 2 faster more rock like tracks sound okay.

ehhhhh

album #71 i liked the first two tracks a lot; the ambient vibes were really pretty and well produced. unfortunately, the latter half of the album is someone singing into a microphone covered by a sock whilst hitting their head on a drum. ꩜ favourite track(s): isi, seeland ꩜ least favourite track(s): hero ꩜ album rating: ★★⯪☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,018 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 35 ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 14 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 57

The first few songs were fairly pleasant to listen to, even if they got a bit boring. The last few songs were a complete 180 to this. Some much needed energy into the album, sure, but it wasn't very good. Weird album. Very generous 2.

[annoyed grunt] Weird, silly, pointless, infuriating, meh. Why is it that artists think: "I should make a song that repeats on itself for nine fucking minutes." Some of the parts are pretty and lull me into wandering thoughts, but then I get back to myself and wonder why the music hasn't changed. Good for them, not for me.

I guess a 2, pretty forgettable in all.

Very short and blurry Song that highlighted my listening experience was hero

Nope, too annoying, didn't finish it - pass!

Important electronic act but they have been passed now by far better music from the genre so it sounds interesting but dated.

NEU 75! starts off so chill, and then all of a sudden, as soon as it gets to "Hero," it turns into a weird version of "White Wedding" by Bill Idol (yes, I'm aware that "White Wedding" was released after this album, but my point still stands).

Not really creative or varied enough to get me excited about listening

Mostly no lyrics. Fine

Just ok. Kinda pleasant background for the most part.

Not my taste in music but decent.

I was surprised by how much i didn't mind some of the later songs on this album. The first couple were not my style. The last one was interesting!

Not my thing

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: None This went right through one ear and out the other. Music in America and UK in 1975 is like, fucking insanely good and awesome, and then you have... this. It's not offensively bad, but damn is it boring. I did my two listens and then entirely forgot what album I even had today until I opened this page to write this review.

I thought this was some kind of early electronic album that was just really boring.

Pretty forgettable stuff. They’re trying to do the ambient thing on the first half of the album, but it’s just so thin that it doesn’t work.

This was very relaxing, so much so that I kept falling asleep while listening. I don't really know what else there is to be said about it, it relaxes. It doesn't do anything too dramatic that would cause one to unrelax, it just floats along.

Boring kinda Favorite: lsi, leb whol

I usually like non-intrusive music for background tasks, but this one is maybe a bit *too* background. Not bad, but also not enjoyable.

Good music if you want to zone out and think. Non descript (until the latter part of this kind of dull album).

Started decent but fell off

This is life’s metronome. You have plenty of time and it passes quietly in the background. Here and there a handful of events bring the ticking forward as a reminder, but the ticking soon fades again. Until the end, when the urgency kicks in and theres so few moments left, yet so much remains undone.

Ok, not great

No I’d just rather not. Not terrible but no thank you.

Some ok songs especially when I was on a long drive

I liked the first two-ish songs but it kinda just got weird and worse after that

Felt like this was barely music. Would’ve given it a higher rating if there were no lyrics at all.

Started calm and chill, then around Hero it really went downhill with some awful singing. It did not get better from there, in fact, it may have gotten worse.

Pleasantly boring instrumental music whose devolution started with the third track Leb Wohl, a song that featured sounds of disconcerting breathing and moaning, and reached an apex with the following track, Hero, which featured strained and unpleasant vocals shouting unintelligible lyrics while supported by discordant instruments. The penultimate song treated the listener with three minutes of wind noises on a track that was already 7 minutes of boring and repetitive music. Finally, to close out the album, the last track continues the repetitive beat and boring sounds of the previous track, but with the addition of more unpleasant whispered and screamed vocals. Overall, this was an album that no one benefitted from hearing.

The first half of this album is calm/peaceful - it could be backing for a meditation session or something. "Leb' wohl" even has wave sounds and a metronome/clock style ticking sound throughout. I found this half of the album honestly quite dull, and the random moaning-style-vocals over the top of the wave sounds ruined any form of calm/relaxing vibe for me anyway. The second half is more punk-like, though it still has ambient moments. The vocals are honestly just quite shit, it's like listening to a drunk guy yelling through a wall. The "rock" itself is pretty stale, it's a boring drum beat with droney guitars playing about 2 notes throughout. The drums also have a muffled/dampened tone to them. It's honestly like all of the microphones were on the other side of a wall to the band. I guess that's a deliberate style choice but I think it sounds pants. Not a fan, don't rate it at all. Guess there's just some element I don't understand. The fact that there's a bunch of piano in the first half just about saves it from a 1.

Day804 - i learned to like kraftwerk but i don’t think i could listen to two german techno bands

No idea about Neu! I’d never heard of them and was quite frightened they would be electronic music. In a way, they were. Neu! is a German band with two main members and they are classified as Krautrock. Krautrock is an experimental kind of rock music that came out of Germany in the late 60s and early 70s. It was rock and roll, mixed with avant-garde and psychedelic music. The bands also used a lot of synthesizers and electronic music makers, which were pretty ahead of their time. It inspired many punk, new wave, ambient music, and more of those weird and/or fringe kinds of rock bands. Neu! 75, yes, came out in 1975, and it was the band’s third studio album. The band mainly consisted of Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger. By this time, each had their own idea of what they wanted the new album to sound like, so in the end, Rother wrote the songs for side one of the album and Dinger wrote the songs for side two of the album. Rother’s side one was recorded by just him and Dinger as a duo, while Dinger's side was him and two other dudes. Both sides used keyboards and weird electronic effects. Side one, Rother’s side, begins with ISI, and it’s what you might expect for Krautrock, as it’s all keyboards with Dinger on the drums. I don’t mind this song at all. It reminds me of some of the instrumental, keyboard-loaded songs that came out in the 80s, like the theme from Miami Vice and Axel F. It’s also got a bit of Chariots of Fire to it. Most of the songs on side one sound as though they could be the theme songs for a drama on network TV in the 80s. This could have been St. Elsewhere’s theme. Track 2 is Seeland, and it’s a bit more subdued. In fact, it’s barely got a pulse as it moves forward. Again, the song is all keyboards and Dinger on the drums. It’s not a bad song, it’s just not that exciting. Actually, the more I listen, there might be bass and guitar in this, but it could all be synths. It’s a song to relax to, but not my favorite on the album. It ends with the sound of rain. This was like ASMR before there was ASMR. Track 3 is Leb’ Wohl, and it opens with waves crashing on the beach. One thing about Neu!, they can really set a scene in your mind’s eye. Though again, this is a very subdued song. I can imagine this being used to put people to sleep. Oh, we have our first vocals of the album, though I wouldn’t call this singing so much as speaking. It was said that Rother was leaning more into ambient music, which is basically music that sets a mood and stays in it forever. He accomplished what he wanted if that was the case. Rother’s side wasn’t bad, but it didn’t really give me a lot to love either. Now, side 2 is Dinger’s side, and it starts out with a song called Hero which is a rocker. Johnny Rotten and David Bowie both said they were influenced by this song. Especially Bowie, who had his own song about Heroes. Dinger is playing guitars and singing on his side with two drummers backing him up. But there are keyboards throughout his side as well. Hero, track 4, could have easily been a new wave or post-punk song in the 80s. This was ahead of its time. Dinger isn’t a great singer, but you can see how punk bands could have been inspired by his vocal style. The guitar is just banging out one note essentially. I think I’ve heard this song before, but I’m not sure. I do, however, love it. It’s just seven minutes of fast rock and yelling. It definitely gets your blood pumping. Track 5 is E-Musik, which also sounds like the harbinger of new wave to come. While the song is more of a straight-ahead rock song, it has a bit of ambience to it as Dinger and the boys just pound out the same beat over and over. Dinger does a pretty good job of noodling over the top of the rhythm on guitar. It’s not a bad song, but I like a little more variety or some surprises in my songs, especially if they are 10 minutes long. Though around the seven-minute mark, there's a one-minute break of just wind blowing. Like rattle your windows wind. Then the music comes back in, but it’s slower with some weird growling effects. The song ends with backward music playing, I think it's the main riff of the song. That one was weird. The last track is called After Eight and is a punk rock/new wave song. The guitar pounds out a Ramones-like riff with Dinger yelling the lyrics, before singing the chorus, at least what I think is the chorus, in a low register voice. It reminds me of a New York Dolls song, actually. I actually really like this, though I’m not sure if it’s because I really like it or because it’s one of the two really rocking songs on this album. No matter, it’s great. At the end of it all, I’m not sure if I would consider this a must-listen. As somewhat of an amateur music historian, I’m glad I heard it. I can see how this particular album inspired bands to do their own thing and make music they wanted to hear. But, as an album to sit around and listen to? Maybe if I were taking a nap, side one would be great for that. I wonder if other Neu! albums will be on the list? I’m kind of interested to see how this album measures up to the rest of their catalog. If you like weird, or ambient music, or new wave and punk, you might want to check this out. Otherwise, you can skip it. But check out the song Hero and After Eight. For me, those were the best songs on the album.

Boring!

I'm starting to realize that the bar for getting on this list is very very low. This was another boring album that I will forget as soon as I stop typing this.

That was.. interesting. Tbh I don't really understand.

i want my Krautrock to be in german.

I think this just wasn’t my thing and I happened to listened to it on a bad day.

Way too minimalist to hold any entertainment value. Extremely repetitive, in both melodies and lyrics(though there were hardly any), the instruments alone were not enough to interest the listener.

Yeah nah

This was kind of all over the place. Not a fan.

An album of two halves, both ok

Juuuussstt pretty boring. Reading up on them I can kind of see the influence it had on other musicians at the time, but not like a groundbreaking influence. Also learning that the band was constantly at odds and that essentially led to this yin yang a-side B-Side, with both really boring me in different ways. Sorry krautrock enthusiasts

0/6 bekannt 4/10 Beste Songs: leb wohl, Hero, isi

Surprisingly didn’t hate it?

Neat album for its time but one of those ones that has really lost its individuality over the years. Highlights: "Isi", "Leb' wohl"

I did not finish this

I was not a fan of this album. Maybe my brain isn't wrinkly enough for it or something, but I got fairly bored listening to it. It wasn't offensively bad, but I was looking forward to getting through it so I could listen to something else lol

nightmare nightmare nightmare

1: Leb’ wohl 2: E-musik 3: ISI

Lyricless without interest.

There something there that is both interesting and boring at the same time. As a piece of electronic exploration, it ticks all the right boxes. But as this is now 50+ years old, times have moved on and its a strange and obscure novelty that holds no place in my life

Second half was much better than the first. “Hero” rules.

not my vibe

Isi and the next 2 songs were pleasant upbeat repetitive rhythms, followed by the latter half of the album which was just..noise. Tracks to Track: Isi

The songs go nowhere and are a bit bland and boring. 2.5/5

Boring

boring, repetitive, not for me. 1st track starts out great and then downhill

Zielloze kutmuziek.

These guys aren’t my fav. Not really my type of music.

Boring

Day 147 Interesting enough but not one I’d return to. 5/10 Highlight Seeland

I liked the instrumental songs.

Not my type, not saying it isn’t good tho!

I had more enjoyment reading some of the other reviews than listening to this

It’s okay for what it is

This was alright I typically love a mainly instrumental album with an ambient vibe but this felt kinda claustrophobic to me.

Certainly intrigued by the reviews, and especially around the two halves of the album… Feels pretty non-descriptive and lacking as I get into the first track. And continued throughout the next tracks. Really quite boring, non-descriptive and unskilled. Yeh, this is crap. And now onto side b. Certainly a change and brings the tempo right up. Like a completely different band. Much prefer this half so far. What is this album?! And what am I missing that everyone else is connecting to?! Again, feel it’s a bit pointless and feel lost in trying to connect or make sense of it as E-musik plays out. I’m all far experimentation and difference but there is just nothing to grab onto here, now skill to simply be impressed by. Maybe Krautrock just isn’t my thing 🤷🏻‍♂️

Musically does me no harm. But the vocals are not my favour.

Unexpectedly enjoyable and somehow appropriately wintery.

One of those albums that shouldn't be on the list, you can die without listening to it.

I want to like krautrock but I think ot might be a struggle

Well, I gave Kraftwerk one star for Trans Europe Express and a couple of them have come back with another band name and another stinker. Side One is "ambient music," i.e. the background "you don't need to pay attention to this, just keep on doing whatever you're doing" slop that Spotify is making billions from disaffected people who don't have the attention span to engage with anything for longer than five seconds. Full credit to these guys, they were fifty years ahead of their time. Side Two is better, but nothing to write home about. E-Music is seven minutes of pointless chugging riffing followed by three minutes of what sounds like howling wind with occasional stabs of other stuff. It is a contender for "least favorite song I've heard so far in this exercise," next to Genesis's "The Battle of Epping Forest." What saves it from a basement review are "Hero" and "After Eight," proto-punk songs that are not amazing, but at least are trying to engage, and you can see the roots of some future great music in here.

Mostly instrumental ersatz rock music performed by electronic artists. Not horrible but wouldn't listen again.

Instrumenals kunnen leeuk zijn maar dit is lift muziek

Boring and annoying

This album was just a set of chill background songs, nothing too exciting, but definitely not bad. I would say that the album wasn't something that I would listen to on a daily, or possibly even annual basis, but it is nice just having it in the background, and it would definitely be even better in the background of a movie.

the more electronic the more I dig my heels in and refuse to like it

this inspired wii music

On their third album Neu! once again dishes out their idiosyncratic brand of minimalistic rock (which in turn was an inspiration for certain strains of British post-punk) but the end product itself is a little primitive compared to the things that it influenced. Side one is mostly soft and gentle songs that are heavy on atmosphere but are somewhat repetitive. By contrast, side two consists of drum-intensive rock songs with rough, (proto-)punky singing and simple chord progressions somewhat reminiscent of The Stooges. The relentless *motorik* beat of these tracks does gets a little tiring due to the extended length of these numbers, all of which could have benefitted from some editing - "Hero" takes 5 1/2 minutes to get to the bridge! All in all, this album is important for its historical value and influence but its shortcomings often diminish its actual entertainment value.

★★½

*1975. Krautrock. *Dusseldorf band formed by members of Kraftwerk after they broke up. *Mostly instrumental, including some that sound like nostalgic Christmas type music and others that are more like electronic-ish like you would expect from Kraftwerk. *Some sounds like the clash. *There’s an 8 minute song that’s mostly rain sounds with some light vocals… *Not sure what to make of this album, but I didn’t hate all of it? RATING - 6/10

Meditative

A couple good songs but most of it sounds incomplete

A bit samey and boring - 2 ⭐

Decent instrumental album. Chill and enjoyable

Not really sure what to make of this. Felt like a lot of not very good…to get to a little bit of good. If ya dig what I’m sayin’. 2.25

I don't absolutely hate it but I don't really find it that interesting and it feels a tad bit long-winded and not that interesting to listen to.

I was expecting to hate this. Instead, I barely noticed it, except as groovy background noise.

me hizo compañia sin molestar, pero no mas q eso

Was ok, can see how it might have been a touchstone for electronica, but really wasn't for me.

I liked the opener, but it fizzled out after that for me.

unoffensive; love the term krautrock

Not bad, a good background music with no lyrics

First two tracks I felt like they were building on something, but it wasn’t quite there. The next 4 tracks were a lot less space rock/psychedelic than the first 2 and I didn’t really care for it. E-Musik was a finale, but all in all not much occurred.

Not bad, but I don’t care for it either

Second album of electronica from Neu, a band which influenced many others in the genre. I'd heard the odd track before off this one but the album works as whole. Interesting soundscape rather than a compelling one.

Album 910 of 1089 Neu! - NEU! 75 (1975) Rating : 2 / 5 It worked fine as some decent background music, but that’s about as far as it went for me. Nothing here really stood out or grabbed me, but it wasn’t unpleasant either. Just one of those albums that played along quietly without leaving much of a mark.

No idea why this is here. Seems like other albums cover what’s in this.

So boring

The first 3 tracks were relaxing ... almost zen. The next 3 erased any peaceful feelings

Not my type of music

This struck me as wholly unremarkable. 2.3

Intriguant les 10 premières minutes, et puis nein.
