What was this? Some kind of incel album.. no JK. I dunno there were tone that I really liked, then other parts I was not into. Some of it felt a bit creepy, Satin Down in particular. Keyboardist in Fugazi, which contextualises this better for me
Ah that was nonsense. I found the mixing of it really weird, almost like I could have liked it if it was better balanced but it was all over the place.
This sounds like something that I would have been listening to in my early teens! Unfortunately in present terms it's just pretty average.

I love this stuff. Very grungy. Probably influenced Marilyn Manson. At least a 4, but maybe a 5 even. Reminds me of high school in the best way.

I keep thinking 'when will this be over'. It's worsening my headache and I've been telling my spouse it sounds alot like the wood-chipper outside my house right now. I feel like the other listeners in my group are just trolling me and they don't actually like this. kidding. 1 star - this actively grates on me
D.C. represent! Ignoring the fact that they moved to NYC right after forming, lol. Nothing revolutionary, but it's gritty and has great flow. Lots of great tracks to headbang to \m/
I like the general idea of noisy, guitar-driven indie rock/post-hardcore. I just fail to see what’s special about this album. It was fine, but didn’t make much of an impression on me. I preferred the energetic, noisier songs versus the more brooding, melancholic ones. Some good riffs and nice guitar tones, but overall just an ok album.
Not for me. Gruff singing voice with not a lot of rhythm and the guitar attack is just repetitive. 2/5
Never heared of them before. Musically reminds me very much of "Placebo" which I love - except the vocals. Not a single outstanding song but also no complete fails. 3,5
hmm.... not sure what to think of this one if i'm being honest with you. very ominous hardcore rock with an emphasis on noisy, hedonistic sounds and vocals. this isn't goth, this isn't grunge, this feels and sounds more like... emo... punk? i don't know. it's a peculiar sound, but unfortunately it's not the kind of sound that i enjoyed too much.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
This album is great. Deep rock and roll with heavy vocals. Influences of grunge and punk. Slaying guitars and drums, heavy bass lines. This is fun.

The style made it seem like it was edgy and cool, and yet it was so boring
Not a band I was familiar with, but I enjoyed it. A couple of the tracks might find their way into a playlist at some point.

This one didn't hit me like I thought it would. Generally, early-to-mid-90's-Alt-Rock is my jam. Unfortunately, it just had too many tracks that all sounded the same. I ended up skipping through a bunch of them. Two and one-half stars. Extra half-star added because Girls Against Boys had a song on the first "Clerks" movie soundtrack.

Usually I just don't care for some albums, but this one I hated. Boring and unpleasant and long (seeming) will always lose.
I didn't find anything appealing here. I guess it sounded like music, just not music I enjoy...at least not on first thing in the morning.
This was a long slog but I felt like I'd kind of found the groove near the end.
Well, here’s a dark little collection. I liked the first few songs… but a lot of the album had a sameness that wore on me by the end. Good but not a strong love connection for me.

This is a post-hartdcore sort of thing that represents the epitome of 90s lethargy. Cryptic lyrics, cool bass, f-ing great noise. I dig rockets are red the most.
This is completely the genre I'm into, but it's not the best album in the grenre or even the timeframe
Grunge was mostly a mistake, there were only like two or three bands that could pull it off
I bounced the hell off this, it just did not jive with me.
Loved it, never heard of this album before. Full of raw, aggressive energy, grungy guitars and gruff vocals.
This is dark and heavy in a way that I wasn't expecting. There's a very menacing quality in this singer's vocals that makes every lyric feel like a threat. I'm not sure I'll ever add this into my rotation, because it feels just a shade too dark for me, but I do like the hard rock musicality here. I think this could have been something I'd have explored a little more enthusiastically were I still in my youth, cultivating my musical tastes. I don't think it resonates with my current phase of life, which is why I'll respect it but it won't stick.

When I read they are a post-hardcore band, thought this could be an album I'd really like. But I really didn't. The best part was when it ended, and Spotify played a bunch of related tracks by other bands that were absolute bangers.

When this popped up I wondered how I had missed this first time round. After a listen I knew.
Huh. This feels like it probably would have been a fairly unique sound in 1993, and for some experimental/indie/alt-rock it holds up pretty well. It's a little raw for my tastes, but I thought it was decent. I can totally understand why I've never heard of this band (I can't imagine their whole vibe appealing to a wide audience), but they're pretty good at what they do. 3.3

That early 90's alt low key rock vibe
While looking at the cover art and listening to the first bars, my first reaction was to dismiss this as a hamfisted inclusion of "We Need An Album Of [Genre] In Here" and then dice were rolled but, turns out, this is pretty great! Like if two albums I owned, Sonic Youth's "Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star" (1994) and Filter's "Short Bus" (1995) had a slightly stoned time traveller baby. Noice! [...] [<--- time passed] I quite love this.
I'm hearing shades of punk and hardcore rock all throughout, but I think noise rock is a better classification. That noisiness almost drowns out the lead vocals, which are already kinda wheezy and muffled. Pretty dreary and unremarkable album as a whole.

I gotta say, I enjoyed this album, listened to it start to finished and don’t remember much beyond some riffs.
Very droning, forgettable grunge-y rock stuff. Keeping just one song, barely remember it. Not for me. Favorite tracks: Satin Down. Album art: Weird, man. Looks like a blurry photo of some of the ghosts from the Carnival of Souls, plus a map and compass overlayed on the image. I don't know man, I just don't care. 2/5

Even after listening and reading up on this record, I'm still not entirely sure why it was included in the list. I guess it must have been very influential for other bands down the line, and I can't fault that. This album is still superb and totally unique especially with the way 90's rock was sounding when this released
Boy what the hell boy
Heard "noise rock" and was dreading, however this was a good album, subtle at times, doing different things with it's songs and keeping me hooked all the way through. 3.7

First time hearing this album, not familiar with any of the songs. Seems okay, not really my kind of music. Nothing really grabbed me or stood out. "We never try"
I adore the dark, hopeless, hellish, apocalyptic, torturted sound of this album. It feels like it reaches a hand out and tries to drown you in it's own madness, and while some moments on the album make th is hand feel strong, other leave it weak and frail. There were times when it could get too screamo, or not lean heavily enough into its infernal sound, but there's still a lot to like. Glad I listened to it.

Brooding and moody, repetitive and a little tedious.
Back in the day I often wished Girls Against Boys would stop being coy and just non-stop deliver the rock they were so clearly capable of crafting. They'd have these songs that would pull you in close and hit you hard with some crushing riff and cool vocal delivery. Those songs were just so good. But then they'd turn around and have a song that would lose itself in a mid-tempo, tryin' to sleaze meander. I think I have like 3 albums and I was frustrated in this way by all of them. Today giving this record a listen after not listening to them in ages, I still have the same reaction though it is tempered with a greater latitude for the slower tracks. I still get impatient during some of the breathy-cool, faux-sultry, slow jams, but overall I think I'm more able to accept that the vibe that was their goal often just wasn't my preference. They were a band that could make the kind of music I preferred but chose to pursue some other ways of making music and that's okay. Now I may have not reached the level of chill to fully appreciate GVSB but at least I'm cool with their pursuit of cool.
One of those ones where I've never heard of the album or the artist....but ended up thoroughly enjoying. It gives lots, and clearly shows things that others have copied. Genuinely had a good time with it.
I’m not sure how this flew under my radar for over 30 years. It is squarely within my wheelhouse and teenage me would’ve eaten this shut up, yet I never heard of it. It sounds a bit like if Hüsker Dü hired the drummer from Ministry and then made an album with Steve Albini. If I wasn’t clear, I dig it.

Pretty boring, songs drag on. Thought the album was almost over but was only four songs in. Some cool grooves and licks but they never go anywhere.
Good lord this was awful. I have literally nothing positive to say and I have no idea how anyone could like this. The music was genuinely deafening and the vocals were the cherry on top of sounds from hell.

It’s probably one of my least favourite on this whole list. for all my ambivalence towards fellow post-hardcore outfit Slint, at least they had menace & theatre going for them. This just plods… In theory, twin bass guitars should provide a unique twist but it gets really muddy and monotonous. Speaking of monotonous, I was worn out on the singer’s rasp after two songs. When I finally heard their music it wasn't bad but just nothing that different to loads of other bands
A bit meh for me
Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby is a good post/indie rock album. It stands out as differing from the other 1990s indie rock bands having a darker sound and more aggression. It's the event in the shady bar in the wrong part of town.
Never heard of this band. It was pretty rockin. Will try to listen to it again.

A fun grungy rock album. Could not tell what much of the lyrics were, but the music was good. Wasn’t very impressed by anything, just a solid sound. Standouts: Go Be Delighted, Learned It, and Bullet Proof Cupid.

It's like if Sonic Youth were about 5000x worse...the production value on this album truly sucks, unless the producer was purposefully trying to save us from the singer. The entire album sounds like his vocals were recorded through another member's microphone. However...the instrumentals are mostly appealing to me. Favorite track: Satin Down

Ganske ass
Had only listened to one song but this is a pretty hard rock solid album. It was surprising and it dumbfounded me at times with their change of pace and how the album was organized.
I thought I would like this from the first few minutes. The percussion and rumbly bass were promising, but the sameness of the growling vocals and the song structures really started to make it drag. By the halfway point I started checking at the end of every song to see how many were left. So maybe hearing one of these songs loud in a bar would work for me, but hearing a dozen of them while sitting at my desk was not a good time.
This is not what I was expecting LOL. I wish the vocals were mixed a little louder, and this style of music is not normally my favorite, but I appreciated the production, and thought that the band sounded pretty good.
Enjoyable, although it got pretty blendy. This is a band I've heard of before but never sat and listened to. It borders on a little too whiny for me at times but I'm going to still give it a bonus star for being a fun discovery.
I would’ve given this three stars, but whatever song started with those excuse me’s made me drop a star. Hated that, you’re excused.
Made it just short of halfway through before I had to turn it off. It just felt like anti-music to me, it's probably the sound the artist is going for but I'd rather shit in my hands and clap then listen to this sort of music.

Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby is decent in places, I dig the heavier sound and could happily listen to it just casually, like if one of the songs came on the radio I'd enjoy it, but it is somewhat prosaic and paint-by-numbers of the genre and isn't good, important or memorable enough to be on the list. Another 2 but a higher 2.
Did not get a huge amount out of this, it's grungey metal with little tune and it doesn't in most places have the pace and energy to give it much in the way of oomph. 2/5, could do a lot better.

Je hebt steeevige tomatensoep en steeeevige indierock. Maar alle nummers klinken hetzelfde en allemaal net iets te hard. Goed voor een avondje beuken wellicht, maar ja, dat doe ik eigenlijk nooit.
We krijgen vandaag een indie plaat lees ik. Nou snap ik dat de term 'indie' een lege huls is. Maar toch roept het associaties bij mij op en die zijn toch anders dan wat ik nu hoor. Door de nadruk op de lage tonen, komt het mij toch over als een studioband. Nu houd ik zelf van van een toontje lager, dus ik luister mij mij hier wel een weg doorheen. Maar ik mis uiteindelijk toch creativiteit op de andere frequenties. In totaal is de buitenkant aardig versiert, maar is het verder een lege huls. Ah, vandaar dus: indie.
Over post-hardcore heb ik al wel eens eerder een boekje open gedaan. Een genre dat me prima zou kunnen liggen, maar we krijgen bij dit soort genres voornamelijk de grondleggers en de voorlopers te horen. En niet wat voor moois het in potentie kan zijn. Maar goed, we leveren ons zoals gewoonlijk weer keurig over aan de grillen van deze snoblijst. Het ene nummer doet me een beetje denken aan Lou Reed met zijn Velvet Underground, maar dan 25 jaar later. In een recenter versleten leren jack. Een ander nummer is meer een muur van geluid zoals Dinosaur Jr. De muziek klinkt redelijk kaal, zoals gebruikelijk eind jaren 80 en begin jaren 90. Er zitten stukken tussen die voller klinken en iets meer groove hebben, en dan klinkt de potentie van het genre er wel iets in door. En lijkt het soms zelfs iets op de stoner van Kyuss en later Queens of the Stone Age, of Sonic Youth. De zure broeders zullen het misschien wel weer helemaal niks vinden, al heeft dit wat minder elementen om een hekel aan te hebben voor ze. Het is eerder nietszeggend voor hen, dan aanstootgevend. Een 2 gok ik. Ik zal het niet compenseren met een 5, maar ik wil een 3.5 wel zoals vaker afronden naar een 4.

Band pitch idea: A less talented Alice in Chains This band is like the Terminator. I can only assume this band by a major label from the future to kill indie rock so it never fully takes off and musical tastes do not divert away from the mainstream. Kill indie rock before it grows, but unfortunately this isn't indie rock and is like the lead singer of Collective Soul fronting a post-hardcore band. I wanted to like this because so many others did not like the album and I thought it can't be all that bad. There is just nothing special about this album and I'm attempting to think about how its placement on this list is justified.
Actually enjoyed this. I've never listened before to this band, and it wasn't at all what I expected.
It’s definitely my kind of music. A never heard of them before. It sounds a little like the Psychedelic Furs at times…but with more edge. Maybe a little Nirvana-like at times too… I’ll continue to listen and someday I think it will be a favorite but, right now I am just getting to know it. Hard to rate it fairly, but Ia’ll give it a solid 3.5. Standouts: Rockets are Red, Bug House

This kind of stinks. Can't see why this is on the list. Some instrumentals were fine enough and the droning parts weren't the worst if that's what they were aiming for.
The first track put me on the fence, but I'd say it does get better. Bullet Proof Cupid caught my attention. Let Me Come Back also alright. Sounded better in the car. Overall tho it just didn't click for me. 2.4
I enjoyed this hardcore metal thrasher slasher album and wished I had listened to it at the gym instead of my desk. Post hardcore...why were you late to the hardcore party? This group sounds like Stone Temple Pilots wanted to be rougher so they had a baby with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie...out of the easy bake oven comes Girls against boys. They have a great rough edge but not to the point of overblown death metal. They have just enough edge to be a favorite at the gym. Because yes, it's gotten old listening to Godsmack and Disturbed. Their drummer is badass too and I love the drum beats on this album. 3.4
Heavy on the bass and drums with fairly bright guitar. Cool album but it got monotonous. The roaring vocals are just meh. I wanted to like this album more than I actually did. After a second listen it was dull and didn’t hold my attention. I’m curious if they ever evolved or if they just burnt out with the same old sound.
Never heard of these guys. Quite liked the sound, but the vocals were off-putting - felt like forced teen angst. Take that out and it's pretty good, twin bass fuzz attack!
Bunch of alright songs, not sure about the historical context behind the album. A few decent riffs here and there that made me headbang, sounds like a mix between doom/sludge/Stoner. Nothing to write home about if I have to be honest.

Mixed on this. I enjoy the aggression and texture building throughout. The ethos of this music seems to be to bank on the dynamics more than the 'riffs'. Which is very cool when it works, and a little dull when it doesn't. It reminds me of very contemporary sounds, from NIN to Deftones and notably Dope Body and Chat Pile. It even harkens back to Velvet Underground at points. The difference for me between those bands at their best and this is a compelling vocal, and i feel this is held back by a less than captivating vocal style. Its so gravely it borders on whispery...which is a shame because it almost has a Lemmy from Motorhead timbre, but like, Lemmy when he has a cold. There were some shining moments, the most realized of which was the song 7 Seas. That one was kinda perfectly balanced dynamics wise and had such an obscured and haunting harmonic quality. I feel myself giving this one another go, and seeking out more from this and related bands. Its somewhere in that The Fall lineage of bands...so maybe I'll start there?

Eh there might be some potential here. My first impression was this is ok.
3.5 - It took a couple tracks for me to get used to the mumbly vocals and murky guitars, but I ended up liking this. It's full of catchy riffs, loud and driving (see: "Learned It"). I also liked the eerie quiet on "Satin Down" and "Bughouse."
What I dislike about post hardcore is that it’s repetitive, heavy, scratchy, and pointless. Also it feels like they take themselves too seriously. It’s so monotone.
In a day when alt rock was huge, there’s no wonder this one never became a hit. No good

This was not as bad as I feared after reading some of the comments. Forget the vocals, as most of the time, I couldn't understand anything due to the low, growling voice that was drowning in the music somehow. The sound is grungy but raw so post-hardcore may be an adequate category.
Completely unnoteworthy but it progressively got worse. I will round up for no reason in particular.
While I quite enjoyed the dark sonic soundscape and the from the bottom of the well vocals (eg the production), I didn't think that much of the actual songs or singing.

Sounds like just another grungy type garage band. Not hearing anything here. Borderline 1. Will give it a 2 because it's biggest offense is only that it's incredibly boring.

Not really sure how to describe this one but it was worth checking out. It’s been labelled as a post-hardcore album but doesn’t really sound like what I would class as post-hardcore for the most part - it’s more like a darker, scuzzier Alice in Chains with a gruffer vocal. Good stuff

This album fucks.
I'm sure hard rock fans like this, but I don't see how this is any more groundbreaking than the other hard rock albums before it.
Interesting choice. The girl I sat next to in French and whom I fancied to a horrendous degree, liked these and so naturally I tried to get into them (no jokes, you dirty minded folk). I failed to, but she lent me a load of vinyl including the first Hole record, some Babes in Toyland and Bikini Kill. Probably some other stuff but I loved all that. Girls Against Boys then. Interesting choice in that said girl is pretty much the only person I can recall ever talking about this band, hence my mind being immediately drawn there. Listening 30 years later I'm hearing hints of Kyuss maybe, and of course their own influences. There's a lot going on here and I'm not sure why I didn't get into them at the time. Noise but with melody is right up my zone of interest. This has really got something. Slow or fast, it drills into you.

My first time listening to Girls Against Boys. I've heard them described as post-hardcore, and I wasn't quite sure what that was supposed to sound like. And to be frank, a lot of it sounded like 90s grunge. Not a bad thing. Parts reminded me of Nirvana and Sonic Youth, though not as great as either. Thought about in the context of its time, I can see it feeling exciting, like an important part of a scene at its height. In retrospect, it suffers from being a bit repetitive and doesn't quite stand the test of time. But it has its moments and it's fun to imagine having been there.
I needed to hear this before I died? I'm not sure what was so special about this as it only barely held my attention.

Interesting Hard Rock Album
Two bassists! Girls Against Boys is one of the Touch and Go post-hardcore bands of the early 90's that would be overshadowed by their contemporaries like Slint, the Jesus Lizard, and Shellac. This was also around the time that Fugazi was cementing the new sound of post-hardcore for the 90's, effectively carving out their own little piece of alternative music history. It makes sense, then, that Girls Against Boys would bear some similarities to Fugazi, especially considering Fugazi's drummer Brendan Canty founded the band. He's only on the first record, however, so it would be drummer Alexis Fleisig taking over for the rest of their discography. Regardless. Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby is a dirty, grimy album that reminds me of my favorite Queens of the Stone Age album, Era Vulgaris. It revels in muddy, distorted guitar tones and raw power. The sound often revels in a low place where it gives way for moments of quite contemplation followed by a wired release of noise. There is perhaps something to be said about the influence of grunge, but I won't say it here. Girls Against Boys honed their own sound, and they did it damn well.
I had never heard of them before, but I was hooked from the first few bars…somehow. Like a filthy and dark version of Sugar, slower, heavier. I actually listened to it three times in a row. Another one of those “how did I not know about this” albums. Albeit, admittedly this is not for everyone’s taste.
Sounds good, if you fancy some doomy, heavy gear. It so happens that today I did not.

I was raised a hardcore girl during the peak of the "post-hardcore" scene. I read Alternative Press' back pages, where they highlighted "influential albums in the scene" and I then sought those albums out at Newbury Comics like a fiend. I was a "memorize every band on a label" girl. And sure, I don't listen to this music much anymore, but it is part of my DNA. I know my shit. I loved this shit. And that's why I was confused...why had I never heard of this album? Sure, it's well before my time, but that never stopped me. I know my shit, or at least I thought I did. And the answer is simple – this is not "post-hardcore." This isn't even in the scene. Sure, I get that these are retired Dischord boiz, but this music has more in common with post-grunge than post-hardcore. It's chain-smoked and wrapped in pleather, it's wrap-around sunglasses and buzz cuts and 90s Cool, the soundtrack to Need for Speed. It's not part of the scene, it doesn't know anyone who's edge, there's no box hairdye in its medicine cabinet, and this is not being included in the Tony Hawk soundtrack, because it's too aggro. Is it bad? Not for what it is, no. But I'd argue it's bad for what it *aspires to be*, and that's somehow worse. It also isn't my jam. It's not my scene. I find this strain of rock-in-the-wake-of-grunge to be boring, muddled, and macho without reason, which is why I gravitated towards the post-hardcore scene, because at least those boiz were attempting to process their emotions. And this album is not processing anything, certainly not sonically. It just runs together into a single dull slog. There's moments where I see a glimpse of promise, and also understand how they were mislabeled, and I know sometimes it's "once a punk, always a punk," but this has more in common with Shinedown than Fugazi. My question is why this album? Why not Quicksand, or Jawbreaker, or At the Drive-In, or Refused? Fuck, the 1-to-1 replacement for this is Jawbox's "For Your Own Special Sweetheart" (although I'd say Jawbreaker's "Dear You" is maybe a better representation of the scene etre). Who cares if I don't love this – its inclusion is a purposeful exclusion of actually important punk/hardcore albums from the era, and also a deep misinterpretation of what "post-hardcore" looked like and would look like. It's a blatant misinterpretation of a subgenre, and a bad representation. That makes me even more upset. The fact that it's boring made me want to turn it off, which warrants a low rating anyway, but the fact that it has a seat at the table over anyone actually important to the history of post-hardcore warrants my angry rant.
Okay.... First album on this list that im unsure why is it on here. Dont get me wrong, it isnt bad, its just meh. Around this time there were so many bands who did the same thing sonically, so im not sure why Girls Against Boys made the list. Highlights are definitely Bulletproof Cupid and Let me Come Back. The rest...eh... Its just bland. Sorry boys.

Really good grunge. Took me a few songs to get into it but the 90s sound with the growling vocals worked well together.

I gave it a shot. Sounds like he was singing through a tin can and the instruments were played in a garage and recorded on a tape recorder but guess that probably the style of the genre. I’m not sure if I understood one sentence on the whole album so it must not have been that important of a message.
I saw someone on here describe it as adolescent rock, something they would have liked at fifteen. I could see myself “ironically” getting into this. Not sure about it at this point in my life.
I rarely listen to 90s rock music and about halfway through this album I thought, "Hmm, I need a break from 90's music, this has been going on for far to long..."
I have never heard of this band or album, but I think middle school me would have really liked it. Middle aged me thinks its is a bit dark and verging on the territory of just noise. Still, not awful. I think if the singing didn't feel kind of like lazy chanting it might have scored a bit higher.

This is an angsty and left-turn filled 90s album that’ll have anyone screaming along in minutes. The vocals are raw and powerful, the instrumentation is half sample filled and half raw talent from guitars, basses and drums, and the lyrics are sardonic and perfectly executed. This album deserves a 4.4/5 or 88/100.

Let me come back has some energy to it. And some distortion. And unrecognizable lyrics. Not much else to say about it.
I definitely like how it starts... the bass and drums definitely find a groove and push the music forward. The muted, mumbly lyrics do kind of fit with the overall vibe and i think it works. My main issue is that it seems like all the songs are like 20% different than the next. It has potential, but not much stands out.
Really grungy
I was really about this for the first few tracks, then certain things started to grate a little. The vocals can at times feel effortlessly cool, but at certain points more... grunting. There are shades of Smashing Pumpkins and Failure on here, which I appreciate, as I also appreciate anything called "post hardcore" by Wikipedia being on here. Call it a 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Rockets Are Red", "7 Seas"

Se suele etiquetar a Girls Against Boys como indie rock, pero, aun compartiendo algunas características con los grupos independientes de principios de los 90, mantienen su propia identidad con un sonido, personal, asombroso y potente. "Venus Luxure N.1 Baby" contiene sonidos y letras inquietantes, como las de "Go Be Delighted", canciones lentas y amenazantes como "Satin Down" y también temas más roqueros, como "Let Me Come Back" y "Bulletproof Cupid". Pero todo el disco se cobija bajo una bóveda sonora en la que se mezclan rabia y desasosiego con una leve pizca de angustia y ansiedad.
I’m not sure what I was expecting getting into this (probably something like Sebadoh who I dislike), but… a post-hardcore band from Washington, DC formed from Fugazi and Soul Side alumni was NOT what I was expecting. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this band. This is at least as good as what Fugazi was doing around this time period. It leans heavily into bass and drums with a lighter touch on the guitar, and that’s something that I think differentiates the sound from Fugazi and other post-hardcore acts. I really like this one, I’m glad this was included.

Didn't really enjoy it I feel like i've heard better renditions of this kinda music. Its great lyrically with themes of alienation and decay. I don't see myself coming back to this album

Solid grungey songs. A good sound. Very enjoyable. Not many huge peaks, but Let Me Come Back rockets, and to a certain extent Billy's One Stop reaches those heights. Glad to have listened to and enjoyed this album, although some of it is a less defined Nirvana.
The pros - it sounds a bit like big black, it's the sort of thing I'd hoped for when I was looking for other grunge bands, rather than Pearl Jam. The cons - it doesn't have any mind meltingly brilliant tracks, it's about three tracks too long. Overall it's good, but not life changingly brilliant.
Like a shittier Trent Reznor. So very bad - no singing, just speaking/yelling into a mic paired with some horrid instrumentals. 3/10.
I mean, I’d put “Ride The Fader” by Chavez on the list over this (it’s a classic), but Venus Luxure No. 1 was pretty good, even though it isn’t a record you really need to hear before you die.
Mixed bag. Some songs are pretty ripping. Qotsa sound. But then a totally dull slow shit song comes on. I suppose bands like this had to walk so better bands could run. But I'm trying to rate based on how well I like the record not significance, impact, or influence. So this is a 2.

I tried to convince myself this wasn’t that bad by thinking, “It’s kind of like The Jesus Lizard, I guess” but really this reminded me of nothing so much as Bush. So fuck this. I didn’t like this kind of shit when I was an angry young man, so I’m certainly not going to like it now that I’m a bitter, grouchy tired old man.
A couple decent songs. Average.
Entre Dinosaur Jr y Sonic Youth, nunca supe nada de este grupo en esa época y ahora me suena bien, pero viejo. Me han gustado "Learned it", "Bullet proof cupid" y "Billy's one stop". La verdad es que el disco mejora de la mitad en adelante. Así que siempre hay que escuchar los discos enteros.
The first band on this list that I had not even heard of prior to this review. I probably will go back and listen again- apparently they are a project from a Fugazi member, though I would probably always rather listen to Fugazi instead.
This is solid stuff. Strong-driving music that doesn't fall apart. I enjoyed it.

Post -hardcore. Maybe not "post" enough for me. I won't say there weren't pieces of tracks here and there that caught my attention, but I was never entertained. The sound is mostly industrial drone. And angry.

I was introduced to this band when I was in high school by my older co-workers while working at local pizzeria but I had never listened to this album. This album rules and totally rips. Excellent band and excellent record.
Not my style of music

- Ich fasse es mal mit den ersten Worten des 4. Songs "Satain Down" zusammen: Well excuse me but I'm just not on this right now... - Oftmals holt mich sowas ab, hier und heute leider nicht. - Post-Hardcore klingt für mich auch eigentlich ein bisschen anders, aber das Genre ist scheinbar breiter gefächert, als ich vermuten würde. - Bei "Learned It", "Bullet Proof Cupid" und "7 Seas" fand ich manche Momenten noch ganz in Ordnung - Ich hatte zwischenzeitlich das Gefühl, es hier vom Vibe her mit einer noisy und eintönigen und nicht so gut gesungenen Version von den Smashing Pumpkins zu tun gehabt zu haben. Die sind halt aber leider 1000 mal geiler. - Hm, ich denke ich werde nicht drauf zurückkommen... Rating: 1,75-2/5

Ich hatte keine Zeit mir beim Hören Notizen zu schreiben. Allerdings ist mir kein Song wirklich im Gedächtnis geblieben (na gut Bullet Proof Cupid ein wenig, musste den Namen aber trotzdem gerade nochmal nachschauen). Ansonsten klang das für mich alles solala, auch wenn ich nicht wirklich betiteln kann, warum nicht. Rating: 2 / 5
I like the rawness of this but there is nothing to look forward too. No riffs, no breakdowns, no moments of feeling anything really. In the end it all just melts togeather.
Even if this was awful on purpose, we can't give it credit for sticking the landing since it wasn't completely awful. I like the first song "In Like Flynn" for example. But that's only because it sounds like a song David Chase would have used for a scene at the Bada Bing on The Sopranos. That's as far as I can get with anything resembling a complement. I mean, the director Kevin Smith is apparently a fan, which is all you need to know.
Compared to similar albums by the likes of the better grunge bands of the era, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains etc, this is very run of the mill.

A really good GVSB album - first album in the sequence: Venus Luxure No1 Baby - Cruise Yourself - House of GVSB, basically, the same album repeated three times - could also be due to their distinctive guitar sound... In any case, I like Cruise Yourself a little more than the others (4-5-4).
I liked this: great repetitive sound.
This one kind of had me on board with the first song but then listening fatigue quickly set in with each song that followed. Not a fan of the style of the lead vocals and why are they buried so deep in the mix?

i don’t care for this and didn’t really listen as so much as have it on in the background just because it’s on the list, some interesting bits but overall i didn’t like it.
This certainly is some heavy depressive stuff. Driving guitars and pounding drums. Not the nicest on the ears but very edgy. If I were to direct a movie and it needed a scene where people hang out in a lost place where everything falls apart and they lost every hope - this would be the soundtrack. It actually has some better tracks but the worse ones drag this project way down.

I wasn’t a fan of this album. This is neither the best post-hardcore album nor the best indie album. The vocals and lyrics are a bit too edgy for edgy’s sake and just didn’t hold up. The instrumentation similarly is a bit one note.

My first DNF! Highlights - nothing really. Didn’t like - pretty much everything but especially satin down. Overall - first album that I got that I really didn’t know anything about at all, never heard of the band, but looking at the brief wiki entry I had high hopes - I love a lot of indie & diy, but this falls on the side of post hardcore that I really don’t like which is kind of “unpleasant noises for the sake of unpleasant noises” which I can only ever tolerate in small doses, not a whole album. I can understand why people would like this, but it’s not for me. Didn’t finish the album, I was having a bad time.
I like the harder, darker sound of this album; especially compared to the last album I listened to.
3/5. While this is an alternative album, there were plenty of punk and grunge elements that really gave this record some shine.

Sonic Youth eren, és clar, influència indispensable en aquell moment, i Girls Against Boys es van demostrar com uns dels alumnes més aventatjats. La distorsió, el feedback i les capes de guitarres, combinades amb bon sentit amb la melodia i trobant sempre el camí del format cançó. No era fàcil i la gran majoria de bandes van oblidar que calia talent per portar a bon port aquest so. No va ser el cas d'aquests novaiorquesos, que mai van arribar a esclatar i la llum dels quals va durar poc... però el disc és un molt bon testimoni d'uns anys fantàstics
Listening to this Album feels like drinking a Manhatten in the Garage of a Mortician. I like the gritty mood and don't mind the repetitive tracklist too much, though I admit that I probably wouldn't listen to too much of this at a time.
Nothing special US post punk hardcore. Unremarkable.

3/5. Heavy and thick, close to sludge metal, this goes pretty hard. Mostly unintelligible lyrics save a few but it feels like that is correct. The riffs are clean and drudging, akin to early black sabbath but providing the punk of the Stooges for example. Some of these songs last a little long, but they do go pretty hard. Slows down a little near the end but a solid listening experience.

Never heard of them, but it seems like it's right up my alley. A weird mix of alt-rock and Jesus Lizard and mumbled talk-singing. Nice low-end action. Giving it a 3 because it's not *all* strong, but I'll probably revisit this one.
Listened to this while cleaning. I'd rather have been playing a board game...but life isn't always fun and games. For some reason I had heard of Girls Against Boys before...but I'm not totally sure why. Maybe Hedwig and the Angry Inch...but that doesn't seem right. The album was kind of standard early 90s indie rock. Some great riffs here and there...but why this was selected over like 50 other equally good albums from the same time period...I'm not sure? I didn't dislike it...but it wasn't as strong as some of the other albums I've rated a 3...so this gets a 2. The girls won.

Generic bad 90s “hard” or “alternative” rock.
This album has some good qualities, but not enough to make up for how unsettling it sounds. The lyrics are cryptic to begin with, and they are made completely unintelligible because of the distorted guitars.
It's... competent? But competency doesn't earn you the ability to stand out from the pack. I honestly don't really get why this is here, not being particularly notable or excellent in any specific way. As a drummer though, I can tell you their drummer really likes John Bonham.

A near-perfect "post-hardcore" album. So underrated it's a crime against the whole genre itself. The saturated basses played by Eli Janney and Johnny Temple (that right, "basses" in "plural") give this band a very distinct sound, and so do Scott McCloud's obsessive guitar riffs, husky vocals and part-sardonic, part-surreal lyrics. Plus, Ted Niceley's production is dynamic as f*ck. Dark atmospherics, menacing slow-growers, and propulsive rockers unite in this LP like in no other record. That's where *Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby* impresses the most: in its merging of different aesthetics that rarely mingle--therefore going far beyond the post-hardcore playbook as it was known in 1993. Also, every track is excellent, especially "In Like Flynn", "Learned It" and "Bulletproof Cupid", which are absolute gems. Once you hear those haunted vocals on the first, that heavy guitar riff on the second, or that hypnotic bass pattern on the third, it's basically impossible to forget them. So don't listen to the naysayers on this app. If you like your post-hardcore moody, with subtle pop inflexions that are both off-kilter AND catchy, this LP is for you. If you don't like such things, it's OK. But please, don't pass off judgement on musical styles you're just unable to comprehend anyway. Fawn over cheesy, "vanilla" stuff such as Bonnie Raitt, Adèle and Terence Trent D'Arby, and just say you're out of your league for anything that's a bit more exciting, original and "underground". And if you usually like that type of music but are still confused by the many idiosyncracies of Girls Against Boys, please give this album another chance later on. The global score for this record on this app is just a shame, enough said. Glad that Dimery's team put ot in this list, at least! 4.5/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential albums", rounded up to 5. Which translates to a 9.5/10 grade for more general purposes.
