Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Very 80s, but strangely enjoyable because of their gusto.
Anne Rice, The Soundtrack
Le générateur me gâte avec un autre ptit banger que j’ai jamais entendu parler nul part. Du new wave goth rock? Ça fais grincer les dents, mais on sens pas le côté pleurnicheux et turbo edgy qu’on pourrait associer au goth et emo de ce monde, on retrouve plus le côté “Black Sabbath” du genre sur l’album. À revisiter 100%
Not usually a fan of repetitive music, but the melodies and riffs here are great. This album has great atmosphere, and the fun vocals make it engaging. Even the 10-minute track is a bop all the way through (but especially towards the end).
I'm intrigued..!
Goth sex music! Do you think if Andrew Eldritch farts it’s smells of patchouli oil, and if you cut him he bleeds snakebite and black, such are his goth credentials? To be honest other than the fantastic Temple of Love single I’ve never really listened to them. To my surprise, I enjoyed it a lot. I’ll forgive the occasional naff 80s sounds as the overall mood was oddly comforting and unexpectedly upbeat in places, and the vocals to me are the absolute star of the show, really drive the mood and intensity of the songs. It’s all just very enjoyably flamboyant and theatrical, not musically speaking but similar in a way to the rather theatrical and OTT hair rock scene that really kicked off at a similar time. It’s weird what post-punk turned in to in the 80s, like some minor musical big bang moment.
Okay this is getting a lite 4 but it could have been a solid 4 (3.5 is a more accurate rating imo). Voice was solid, loved the broody, dark feel to it, fit great with the album. Most of the album was really solid musically. Lyrics were good. The drum machine though. Like I get it, this was the thing for some reason in the 80's but Lord above drum machines are trash. They sound bad, sooooooooo fake. Was it really that hard to find a drummer during the 80's? What was going on? Nobody actually thinks they sound good. Chill out with the fake drums and synths. Otherwise this was a pleasant and surprisingly good album.
Sounds like industrial, goth dance music. Pretty neat. Wish there were more baritone range singers, super cool.
I hadn’t heard this one before but really enjoyed it overall! Goth music for the win fuck yeah!
I’ve absolutely no idea why, but I listened to this whole album thinking I’d heard Sisters Of Mercy before, but I was mixing them up with New York Dolls. Those band names don’t even sound remotely similar. Anyway, I really enjoyed this album. The standout for me were the very interesting vocals. It doesn’t feel like such a deep voice would suit this goth rock vibe, but it really does. I’ll absolutely be listening to this album again. I think it may stick with me for some time.
Cool album overall. Standout songs: Lucretia my reflection This Corrosion Flood II
A couple of songs are familiar but a lot is new to me. I'm a big fan of 80s alternative/new wave/goth so love this. Favorites: Dominion, Lucretia My Reflection, This Corrosion, Flood II Would I listen to it again: Yes
Dark Gothic Rock which i liked a lot. I only knew Dominion / Mother Russia and haven't deep dived in this album yet, but glad that I did now. I will definitely get few more listens out of this album in the future!
So, five days ago I got an album described as goth rock, which was a first for me. I didn’t enjoy it much and didn’t really feel a strong goth connection. Then came this album with the same description on Wikipedia. I had never heard of this band, so wasn’t expecting much… I LOVED THIS! Turned the volume up after the first 15 seconds. Really brings me back to my late 80s dance club days. I don’t remember this band, maybe they didn’t break big in the US? But this hits the mood… really great album.
Unique voice + sound , but not perfect throughout the album.
Enjoyed this! Dark, and very, very 80s. Just listen to those reverb drums! A bit of Depeche mode and a bit of the Human League if they decided to get really in to BDSM. I like this dark type of electro so this was my jam. “Dominion/Mother Russia” is a great start. “Flood I” has slightly worse vocals and hook, but that menacing beat is really intoxicating. There are a few downers like “1959” and some of the songs are too long. Overall this is a good find, I even enjoyed the flimsy “This Corrosion” whose synths sound to come straight from an old video game. The choir hooks were a real gem in that song! I’ve listened to the album a few times and it has grown on me each time.
dark fantasy twink music
Fun album, I loved the song "This corrosion", but the album version was a bit long. The music video edit was much tighter. 7/10
Guys, I think they might be Goth. Album cover: (A) See above.
I'm enjoying the opening song. Some sweet sax, some loud drums, some cool harmonies. "Dominion/Mother Russia" has pulled me in. "Lucretia My Reflection" has a groovy little guitar bit going. I am digging this albums dark but also dancy vibes. This song has some Talking Heads feel to it. This song is great. "1959" lost me a little, but "This Corrosion" got me back. I don't usually have the patience to listen to nine minutes of a song, but this one had me going the entire time. 8/10
80's moody synthy goth, and I actually enjoyed it! The choir and orchestral stuff gave me Castlevania vibes, and the rest like 80's pop goes goth. Great pick for this list, This Corrosion is probably my favorite.
Interesting getting this album the day after Merlin Mansens Antichrist Superstar. Feels like the precursor and an inspiration. Except this album was pretty good! Moody dark gothic 80s music. I’ll probably never be in the mood for it again but i definitely enjoyed my time with it! “1959” was a standout and I loved the choir that dives straight into the most 80s industrial music imaginable on “This Corrosion”. Good stuff!
Хорошо здорово старомодно
I'm not very well versed I'm this goth rock thing but I might have to be. This was killer. Feels very ahead of it's time until some synths come in but it all adds to the charm. This is so solid. Give me the cure next I guess. Saved a few songs and will for sure spin the whole record again. I really liked the corrosion but it's 9 minutes long. Otherwise that would have been another save. I just want to do peanuts dances to this in all the black clothes I own
In actually bang up for this today. Reckon you need to be in the mood for it though. However from the opening bars, I'm really feeling the mood. Like many people, I'm very aware of the Temple of Love, they definitely played that song every Monday at Jilly's Rockworld until it's closure, and there my Sisters of Mercy encyclopedia closes. This is a welcome addition to that knowledge base. Dark, moody, catchy, also extremely camp somehow? Lovely stuff I enjoy the characterisation of Doktor Avalanche the drum machine as anal actual person. That stuff fills me with joy. Oh man, Lucretia on now, I am just having a blast with this record.
Higher energy version of the cure. I liked it
80s darkwave goodness
I enjoyed this a lot. Campy Goth 80s fun.
hibátlan 101zene, ezt már szeretem!
Very 80s and very Bowie. Surprisingly enjoyed this one.
Wow, found a new band for my inner goth. 4/5
Solid!
You must be in the right mood to enjoy this one. Luckily, I was this time.
Quite a fun listen. Very consistent vibe. Gothic stuff isn't really my style, but the song in the middle of this album (This Corrosion) is absolutely mad in the best way. It's like 10 minutes long, weird but catchy, and quite danceable. Wouldn't listen to the rest of this again though, which holds it back at 4 stars
A nice stepping stone on the way to industrial sounds like Nine Inch Nails
Goth with some flair! Some Joy Division sounds going on here with super crisp production. Thought it was great. All the nerds pulling this rating down need to stop being dumb nerds. 4 stars
Didn't listen to much gothic rock before this, but the album grew on me. I listened to it for 4 times during the day, and also got into the genre as a whole because of it. The albums has a great atmosphere, regardless if you like that style of music or not. It has a gloomy, dark, moonlight vibe, with the 80s guitars, drums and effects. Fully manages to transform you to a different emotion. Every song would be perfect for a movie/tv show soundtrack.
Quite liked this one.
I first heard of this group from their song "This Corrosion" which comes off this album, but I must have heard the radio edit, I didn't realize it was 10 minutes long on the album. This album is really good, but a lot of the songs run long, especially the title track at over 12 minutes. Overall, it's a gothic masterpiece and has definitely influenced later acts to come. 3.5/5 which is a 4/5 on this scale.
Excellent darkwave album
Spooky, but not Thatcher spooky
Here's a bit of a different album from what I usually get. I'm not exactly in the need for 80s gothic rock since I just got my second album from the Cure a few days ago, but I'm okay with getting this album since I think it's pretty good. Not as good as that other album, but still quite good. The sound is very 80s, but I wouldn't say it's aged poorly. It hasn't aged the best, but it doesn't sound too dated. The singing is interesting, but definitely not bad. The writing is good. The sources of inspiration for this album's songs is interesting, with some songs being inspired by a prior break-up of the band like "This Corrosion" and others being inspired by Chernobyl of all things with the opener "Dominion." It adds variety, so I'd say it's a good thing. This album definitely adds variety to the list. I haven't gotten very many albums like this, so I'm happy this album's here to fill in this niche. The album's also good. Light 4/5.
Liked
Another band that I've heard of but never listened too. I was expecting something dreary, but was greeted with very 80's drum machine, synths and horns. It actually sounds a bit campy. Weirdly it's more enjoyable because of all that.
Hey 80s emo, I am here for it
4/5. Sounds like David Bowie
So 80s.
I absolutely LOVED the song ‘This Corrosion’
A 3 that turned into a 4 by the end of the album. Not a great start but really picks up and is very enjoyable throughout.
i liked this one! dark, gothic, 80s new wave is usually pretty interesting, and this is adjacent to a bunch of artists i listen to already. the songs were all terribly long, but at least they went places. I'll keep an eye out for more sisters of mercy in the future! favorites: dominion/mother russia, flood i, lucretia my reflection, this corrosion, never land
Super fed lyd, det lyder virkelig cool og kæmpestort! Mange gode numre!
Cheesy, but nice. Was really vibing with it.
Awesome gothic rock. They used a drum machine super effectively and it really lends itself to the vibe here.
I’m usually not a fan of 80s pop/rock, but I really liked this album. Great sound, synthy and gothy
....
Rating: 8.5/10 Goth synth-pop rock. The highlights are incredible, the rest of the album holds up quite well too. Favorite songs: Dominion/Mother Russia, Lucretia My Reflection, 1959, This Corrosion, Flood II, Never Land. Worst song: Flood I.
Goths in their natural habitat. 4/5
They were pretty good!
Really cool band I'd never heard before. Kind of like if bowie fronted new order
Flexi music.
Melodramatic in the best possible way.
Never heard of them but really liked it.
I do prefer the less clean and polished production of the Sisters' debut album, but I still highly enjoy Floodland. "Lucretia My Reflection" and "This Corrosion" are both awesome. The moody "Never Land" is a great closer, even though it is just a fragment of the full 12-minute track.
Dying at the album art for this one. Saved to my 80s Bangers playlist: "Lucretia My Reflection", "This Corrosion"
This is an album that I've been waiting for! This is the type of music that a city-dwelling, party-loving vampire would listen to. And I'm here for it. It's dark, it's moody, it's broody, it's sexy, it's weighty. This album is the gold standard embodiment of dark wave, the marriage of new wave and goth. It is also a delicious intersection between said dark wave and industrial. And while this combination of stuff might sound like a "I've heard one song, I've heard them all" situation, The Sisters of Mercy manage to fit a lot of variation into this album. This album also uses its time well; not a moment is wasted here. Anyway, I hardly have any real notes here, other than repeating that this album is peak dark wave. Period.
I feel that this album is worthy of 4 stars or B based on three very good songs. (Dominion/Mother Russia, 1959, and especially This Corrosion.)
Wish I had discovered this ten years ago. This band would have been a mega hit in Gotham City in 1989
Very good album! (I rated another one by mistake lmao
Awesome gothic sounds. I enjoyed this!
Pretty good. 4.2
This was rad. Will listen again.
Loved it. Kind of spooky 80s. Into it.
This album was pretty good. I wish Goth People were real
moody, groovy, and cool. maybe these goths know what they're doing!
4+/5
Good effort, some of their best tracks
Generally a fan. "This Corrosion" is an all time banger. That said, I think it's by far the strongest tune on this record, and as such, it's hard to give the album a five, though it is a really interesting mix of industrial, goth and emo stylings.
This has cool goth vibes.
Surprising
Really good album. Proper goth, dark stuff, and I really enjoyed this.
It was cool sort of like 80's goth stuff
I felt a bit indifferent about this album. I could see where it was a goth primer. But I wasn't that enthused about the album. But then I listened to it a second time, and I realized: you cannot have Nine Inch Nails without this album. Listen to "Flood II," and tell me you do not hear "Head Like A Hole." It really changed my thinking about this album. I really started to dig it a lot more. Still, "1959"... yikes. Would have liked to have heard the whole completed track of "Neverland" instead of just a fragment. Top tracks: "Lucretia My Reflection," "Flood II", "This Corrosion"
Who doesn’t love a Goth dance party? Of course the “hits” Dominion/Mother Russia, Lucretia My Reflection and This Corrosion are great. 1959 is special, too. 🖤🖤🖤🖤
This was so much better than I could ever have imagined! I was underwhelmed by Siouxie and The Gun Club, but this is just joyous (in a non joyous, dark and twisty way). It's a four because I don't know how often I'll revisit it, but if I do, I can absolutely see it getting that extra star.
never heard of this group or listened to the album before. It was a touch before my time and I was not listening to goth as an 8 year old. Still...a surprisingly enjoyable album. Really enjoyed it...notwithstanding the dated synth sounds.
chill
Good almost 5 - first song very interesting
This album was pretty fun. I didn't love every track, and as great as This Corrosion is, it doesn't really need to go on for 9+ minutes. But overall, I'd jam this again.
Good/great album. A friend recommended this a few times but I never got around to it. I regret this. 3.75/5
As an aspiring goth, of course I love the Sisters. Killer stuff here, although I slightly prefer the first. B+
I get the feeling it's pretty dark and bleak over there in Mother Russia. This is a cool album. The fact that it is fully composed by one english guy and his drum machine makes it even cooler. The fact that his drum machine is named "Doktor Avalanche" makes it even cooler. Most songs are somber but not in a boring way. "The Corrosion" is more upbeat and gave me a Bowie vibe. Some songs are a bit long but I didn't get tired of them. The band's website is also bonkers. I'm pretty much in all around...3.6
I may not be terribly in love with the goth aesthetic, but I am beholden to the mopey and beautiful music. Really love the sad ghost voice this guy sings with, and I enjoy the somber piano on the album. Not the most interesting writing, but it’s hitting the right notes for me.
I don't know why I never listened to this album, it's brooding, horny, and danceable. It's right up my alley.
Super 80s, but the right kind for me
There's something about this. It's very atmospheric. It exudes a lot of cool. The album cover is cool as fuck. It's quite repetitive within the rhythms and construction of the individual songs - but somehow that works in it's favour. It's really interesting and unique in that respect, maybe because it has such a consistent mood and vision. I like the driving beats on some of the songs. I want to hit up a goth club, stare at the floor and kind of generally flail about a bit while looking desolate. Outside of the goth club where I won't be judged, there's plenty of toe-tapping going on. 3.5 rounded up.
Never been huge into gothic stuff, but this is much better than I would have expected.
Thoughts before listening: 80s goth rock similar to Bauhaus I believe. I have very little frame of reference for these guys and the genre so I'm not really sure what this will sound like. Review: So it's definitely 80s goth new wave. Like I have found with the Cure and Bauhaus, while the sound here is dark, there's also a pop sensibility that means a lot of these songs are extremely catchy and fun to listen to. It's not necessarily what I'd expect from this genre. I've added a few songs to my playlist (including "The Corrosion' which is one of the better discoveries I've made on this project). I'll give this 4-stars because I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
While not being a huge fan of goth music (and never identifying as a goth), I was certainly goth-adjacent. The shitty industrial band I played in during the 90s certainly played to goth audiences a fair bit. When I was a young man, I would occasionally spend the evening at Sanctuary, the pre-eminent goth night club in Sydney int he late 80s/early 90s. I enjoyed their playlist, which included some of the expected goth classics, but also played a fair amount of alternative and industrial music (which was more to my taste). It was not that different from my own record collection, but played really loud with a dancefloor and flashing lights in a pub. What's not to like? The singles from this album always popped out when played in that context. They are meant to dance too, they sound awesome when played at high volume, and they're pretty dramatic. It's operatic goth rock at its peak. I'm not 100% sure it's meant to be taken entirely seriously. It didn't surprise me when I read that Jim Steinman had a hand in the production; that over-the-top melodrama is really his stock in trade, and (like Meatloaf), I really think this is intended to be fun to listen to. I find this album fun and catchy and you can dance to it. The gothic posturing is a bit silly, but it adds to the drama and fun.
The power of music. I listened to this and it evoked a lot of my daily life in the 80s. I enjoyed the sentimental journey.
More of this album was familiar than I expected. I liked it more than I expected. Quite a lot, actually.
I enjoyed it
Not all goth rock is good (see Type O Negative, yikes) but this album was great. Love the chorused bass and the melodies all throughout. Really doesn't drag at all, no filler to be found
Goth-tacular.
8/10 Love this sound. Didn't know this one before. Great discovery. Highlights: This Corrosion Dominion
Very enjoyable. Lot of Cure vibes from the album. Only had time to listen once, but would listen again! 4/5!
All new to me—pleasantly surprised by it. A few songs drafted, but overall glad to have listened to it.
I had to enjoy Mother Russia ironically because fuck that nationalist bullshit.
Surprisingly good was expecting melodramatic rubbish but instead got a nice blast of 80s music
Goth rock, post punk, whatever you wanna classify this album as it probably fits. It’s brooding and atmospheric and the biggest surprise is probably just how damn catchy it is. There are some absolute bangers on here. Strap on your Docs and best black outfit it’s sadboi hours with this one!
Really surprised how much I like this album. Music is great, vocalist is very 80s corny. Might turn into a guilty pleasure album. Top tracks: Dominion, Flood I & II, Driven Like the Snow
Loved it. Very joy division
Another band that for whatever reason I've never taken the time to explore in any sort of depth despite their music being right in my wheel house.
I love gothic style rock! His voice is awesome. Should listen more to these kind of songs! personal top3 in no order: Flood I Lucretia My Reflection Never Land A Fragment
So viel Power!
One to give some more listens for sure. I do like that 80s gothic sound, stuff like The Cure or Bauhaus comes to mind first when I hear this. I also like this album format of just having a handful (8) songs but a few of them being a bit longer, makes it more memorable.
This thing is so 80s that it’s unreal. It’s kind of a relic of the past in a way. It really gives it some charm. The dark and gothic undertones are fun, with the thundering drums and deep vocals. This one is fun, even if it has a few problems, songs can blend together and it can cheesy (not an entirely bad thing though). Cool unexpected surprise.
A bit biased towards rock, but I enjoyed it. 4/5
I never realized how '80s goth music is until I heard this. Its tracks harder than it should be. Tho gets monotonous after a while, as both goth music and '80s music usually does. Still an enjoyable experience.
Listened Before? No If the music is only half as cheesy as the album cover, I think I'll still have digestive problems. Starts with a synthed out post-punk mixed with new wave aura. In some ways this feels similar to early NiN. Spooky vibes on Flood I. Early standout for me; I love the warbly backing synth line and buried, incantation-like vocals. Feels like good music for exploring a cave to. Lucretia My Reflection is a strong follow-up. Upbeat bass-driven track with punchy drums. Very crisp production. Feels distinctly 80s in all respects. Had this on in the background for the rest of its playtime. Not a ton of moments that grabbed my attention, but I enjoyed the general atmosphere of the album. Felt like this was an interestingly dark fusion between pop and punk with tons of 80s flair. On gut feel alone, this is a soft 4 / 5. Added to Library? Yes
weirdly grew up on this - and aged pretty well - sounding pretty full and well composed now
A Good listen.
love love LOVED listening to this album. the gothic nature of this album is so apparent, it really sucks you in! it made me feel like i was drowning in the midnight sky, similar to the art on the album cover. i especially loved the utilisation of the moody bass guitar and the reverbed organ present throughout the whole runtime i also think the use of the sequencer was very well done, the synths here made a lot of the tracks very avant-garde and grandiose. the only thing i wasn't too keen on were the main vocals, but that's just a me issue. i also found 1959 and driven like the snow to be bog standard in comparison to the rest of the tracklist. not bad songs, just not as interesting. i also liked the themes of destruction on here, ny fave instance of this was dominion/mother russia and flood I. i liked how the opener flowed flawlessly into the second track, representing the aftermath of chernobyl's effects on russia. the organ usage here really stuck out to me as it's typically used in a funeral setting, so it really tied nicely together with the lyricism, with references to ashes and flooding. there's a lot more cool production choices here, like on my fave song from here, lucretia my reflection. the very intense instrumental reflects that of the falling of an empire, as discussed in the lyrics. did you know this song was apparently the sisters of mercy throwing shade at the members who left before this album was released, hence the nonsensical lyricism?? it's so dramatic. i love it haha. overall i really enjoyed it, goth rock might be a subgenre i explore this year <33
Lighter Marilyn Manson-y sound. Slower, less distorted but still a bit electronic and industrial. Rammstein vibes too
Pretty listenable
Cool dark atmosphere! A little short on strong tunes for my part, but a great album over all.
Voix profonde, synthétiseurs omniprésents; l'ambiance grave ravive en moi la nostalgique du gothique.
I remember when this album came out and I had some friends who loved it and I was wholly indifferent. I guess, more honestly, I thought it wasn't worth a listen. Fast forward to today... this was great. The songs were good, the production (Jim Steinman strikes again) was excellent, and I'll be damned but I didn't hate the freakin' drum machine. I mean, I always prefer a live drummer, but it didn't make me angry, so that's a plus. And the vocals, which was one of the things I thought was kinda amateur all those years ago, were evocative and well-performed. So, alright, add Sisters of Mercy to the list of bands I dig.
This album was SO familiar, yet I’ve never heard any of the songs (to my knowledge). It reminded me of music that would be playing at a party in an 80s movie. It’s such a vibe.
It was better than I expected. Will have to revisit this one.
It's all a bit silly, really
cool
1987. Genre: Gothic, Dark Wave Head the album before, but never really got into it. This time, I thought it was very powerful. Standouts: Lucretia My Reflection, This Corrosion, Dominion, Flood I, Others: 1959, Flood II, Torch
enjoyed it from start to finish. type o negative vibes
It was pretty good! "1959" was really boring though. I loved the backing vocals and how they were mixed in most of the album, but especially in "This Corrosion."
my favorite new-to-me album of this project so far. great for the darkness, which is aplenty
1959 is for the romantic, Victorian typa goths which is not me no other notes looking forward to seeing what everyone else in the group thinks
From the start this was hitting at a solid 3. Then about halfway through, I kind of warmed to it a bit more. It wasn’t a quite step of warming, but due to rounding…
banger
I liked this even though the drums sounded like someone hitting a car door with a baseball bat.
4-4.5ish I love 80s music (so there’s my bias) but thought this album was interesting. The vocals were a little morose for me but I liked the instrumentals. It’s an album I’d like to listen to again.
I'd never heard of this mob before. 100% 80s but again, as with many albums on the rating list I think this inspired a lot of other stuff that I listen to a lot of. Very cool and mercifully short.
Well, I don't know what's come over me. I've escaped my comfort zone for something dark and slimy, too serious and overly dramatic ... and guess what...? It's pretty okay. Yup, I'm really surprised this played as well as it did. I'm no skinny puppy, kmfdm fan and generally avoid the black hole of that heavy industrial goth genre, but Floodland seems like a prequel or maybe just one dimension to the left of those bands. I may have even listened to TWICE... #whoami?
Apparently I like new wave if its all dark and gothic. Who knew?!
Favourite songs: Lucretia My Reflection, The Corrosion, Dominion/Mother Russia, Flood II Least favourite songs: 1959 4/5
Hey now hey now now
I like gothic rock and some of the songs were great. Rating: 3.8
8/10
Pretty good gothy rock,can’t decide if it’s a 3 or a 4.I’ll go for a 4.This corrosion is a really good song.
Cool
3.5 stars. Dark gothic rock that feels like a fun soundtrack to a scary adventure. Standout is "Lucretia My Reflection".
Marching through the night. Bit emo but powerful!
Alternates between dance tracks and gloomy gothic. I really liked Lucretia, This Corrosion, Flood II and Driven Like Snow. 1959 is pretty good as well.
very dramatic.
I liked this more than I had expected.
I love goths
this is what this project is all about! I have never heard Sisters of Mercy and never really considered myself a fan of post-punk, goth music. But really enjoyed this album and the recommendations from Spotify following the album introduced me to tons of modern bands in this genre. Down a rabbit hole and loving it!
7/10. I kinda liked this one
Not iconic as the first album, but still outstanding to some extend. And solid production
4.3/5.0
Surprisingly enjoyed this one quite a bit. The slower songs weren't that great, but really like the dark 80s synth sound of the rest. 4/5
At the time - as a loyal Sisters fan present at the last ever concert by Sisters mk 1 at the Albert Hall - this was viewed as an awful attempt to 'go mainstream' . The world had moved on by 1987 and AE was desperate. Thirty years later and I'm of the view it was a great attempt to 'go mainstream' with This Corrosion, Dominion and Lucrezia My Reflection the equal of any earlier Sisters work. Still not quite sure there's a whole album here, so four stars. Patricia Morrison: the goth Bez here.
Very good
Surprisingly good, loved the atmosphere and the sound of it
I liked this much more than Pornography. Still gothic but had that new wave vibe. Pretty cool. 1959 was my favorite.
This one has held up better than I would have anticipated. At the time I thought the choice of Jim Steinman (Meat Loaf) as producer was a tad odd. Some how it works, and The Corrosion and Lucretia My Reflection are as good as it got for Sisters of Mercy. A lot depends on whether you Goth or don't Goth. I do but am not sure this would make my list.
This one I quite enjoyed. 80s Gothic synth. Quite dark and brooding, but super enjoyable. Definitely worth another listen
Better than I remember. Doomy lyrics and vocals but surprisingly tuneful, Dominion - excellent.
This is what this is all about. Zero knowledge or expectation, end up really enjoying some moody 80s synth stuff.
Highlights: Dominion / Mother Russia, This Corrosion
This was a bit of a surprise, I had heard the name of this band but never knew who they were. I really enjoyed a lot of this, will come back to it for sure. Definitely sounds like a precursor to a lot of 80s and 90s rock and metal.
Total mood of an album, in the best way. What I love about this kind of music is how monumental it all sounds. It's a really immersive sound with authoritative vocals, intense arrangements, and evocative lyrics. As I recall when this album came out, it sounded really dark and exotic compared to a lot of 80s postpunk. Sure there were better bands, but listening to Sisters of Mercy was like stepping into another world. Listening to the album 35+ years on, the best songs are still really compelling. As a total production, the album is nicely crafted, with a strong musical point of view. There's an almost theatrical approach to how the songs are placed and flow in relation to each other (Yes, I did see Jim Steinman in the production credits, which seems fitting). There really isn't a bad song on here. The only downside of course, is how the band relied so much on synths and drum machines, which may have sounded top of the line cool in 1987, but can come off now as rather flat and dated. Fave Songs: This Corrosion, Flood II, Driven Like the Snow, Lucretia My Reflection, Flood I
Oh jee, daar zijn ze weer, de 80s. The era of the drumcomputers en de synthesizers.
Enjoyed this more than expected
Cool
This is a banger. Very enjoyable. Just misses 5 stars because it needed a little more variety. But it does what it does very well.
Pretty good goth. Moody and atmospheric.
I feel like this record has influenced so many of my favourite artists. Went straight back in for a second listen. Big fan 🦇
I like some good gothic rock
Glad I tried it, but not sure why this album made the list.
I need this album artwork printed on a shirt. This album is perfect for going on a 5-star rampage with some cheat codes in GTA4..which I’ve done before as Dominion was on the soundtrack for the game. Which is my favourite on this record. DA-MIN-I-ON !!!! This has just 80s oozing out of this thing, but somehow in a good way. Which is a sentence I don’t think that’s ever been spoken before. I’ll give credit where credit is due, I enjoyed listening to this album for the most part. There were some fragments that tried to corrode my ears with their repetitiveness, but hey, what album doesn’t do that? Some of the highlights for me was when there was a Flood of choir singing / backup vocals appearing in tracks. It’s so over the top, but so on brand with being an edgy, “the world is weird” kind of band. If this is goth, well then pass me the black nail polish
A blast from the past that has aged well
Being a fan of gothic music, I've heard about this band for a couple years ago, and I'm sure I've heard them plenty of times in goth clubs, but this is my first time exploring them, and I'm shocked they're not an all-female band like I always thought. In fact, this album's only female contribution was brought over from a side project. As a huge fan of Cure's Disintegration, this has everything I could expect: haunting deep vocals, a fast echoey drum machine, repetitive groovy basslines, powerful and creepy in-your-face synths, muddled screaming guitars that add ambience, plenty of reverb on everything, etc. There's only 8 of them, and they're all long and memorable to the point where I fell in love with nearly every one of them. It's a mix of grand upbeat dance tracks and ethereal atmospheric tracks that go back and forth so you don't get sick of the same formula in successive tracks. It goes beyond my expectations and scratches my itch for something that's not quite the Cure even if I'm not in love with most of them, like a budget Disintegration.
Dark, gothy, and mysterious
Dark, gothic, great beat and fab vocals. I love this stuff.
Cool relic from my year of birth.
Awesome soundscapes helped by the rich production and imagery of the lyrics. A paragon of the goth genre, even if I do think The Cure were slightly better at it.
Am I crazy to call this a fun record? I'm not the type to go out to dance but this is something that would get me on the floor. The instrumentation and production is very 80s but it holds up. Solid songs, too. Everything is accented by the vocal performances of a 400 year old vampire.
Hey now. Hey then. Hey how you doin'?
When the Wikipedia snapshot said it was English Gothic Rock, I was prepared for the worst. Then I started listening to it and realized that it was released in ‘87. It had such a familiar ’80 sound that it brought back memories of my clubbing days. As far as gothic goes, it seems more a caricature of the genre than any hardcore goth sound. I would not have been surprised if any of these songs were part of the Highlander movies since they were kind of goth fantasy movies. I can only imagine that this album was added to the list because it is a good representation of a heavy late ‘80s sound. It’s not bad. But it’s not exceptional either. I did enjoy listening to it for the nostalgia value and would listen to it again. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
Can we get some more echo on the drum machine please?
Love the dramatic, brooding vibe.
Brooding and melodic. Very 80s. 4.5
At first, I didn't get Floodland. But then, I heard 1959, and I finally got it. I'm not a fan of low singing, but Andrew Eldritch's vocals were great on 1959 and This Corrosion. Really, those are the only songs I'd listen to again.
Nice dark and moody, enjoyed muchly.
Bonus star for evoking happy memories of the indie-goth-rock night at the Escape club in Southampton in the late 80s. Getting a wave of nostalgia (or nausea?) for snakebite and black and the ever-present stench of patchouli oil
Dark
Part of a thriving independent music scene in Yorkshire in the 80s they were outshone eventually by The Cult. This album is a change of direction towards a moodier, more keyboard led sound, however it fits Eldritch's voice and is the sound that most people identify with the Sisters of Mercy. Whether it is good or not is an open question for me. It depends, as music often does, on my mood when I am listening to it. If I am in a quiet, reflective mood than it is excelent, but if I am upbeat and active, then it just sounds depressing.
I should listen more to this album.
Este fue un descubrimiento
I found this to be pretty freaking good in a vacuum, before remembering that there are plenty of others who really nail the sound better.
I like. Dark wave vibes that I would definitely listen to again
Solid album. I quite like the dark gloomy sound, but not enough to prevent my attention from dropping off from time to time. In these moments, it gets too repetitive and things like the rather harsh drums get a little annoying. I think I liked this better when I listened to it back in the nineties.
The echo of drums, the discernible cadence of 1980s beats, this is everything the 80s in terms of sound. Vocals are sung in the lower registers, the synthesizers in full effect establishing the base rhythm, filling in the empty space with electronic sounds, almost as if taking a cue from Vangelis's "Chariots of Fire". Minus the 80s sound, the vocals are reminiscent of The National in their lowered pitches. However, this is also reminiscent of what Cradle of Filth would have been had they been an 80s band to go along with a slightly brighter disposition. The album art is practically gothic in tone, but the album itself is a bit more ambiguous. Admittedly that is a weird takeaway. Overall, this album is remarkable in its enjoyability. The recording available on Spotify is very good on the ear, the space between each instrument avoids that crowded "feel" and gives it a sense of reality where much of the 80s sound made things feel crowded-while-somehow-in-space. "Flood II - Vinyl" is an exceptional track, musically. The electronic elements are there a la John Carpenter (again, not gothic but a bit dark), but what really stands out and gives the brightness is that the acoustic guitar is heavily featured as somewhat of a torch in a dark room. The drum beats are hopeful in their loops, the strings are positive in their presentations. The darker elements are all electronic as previously noted, and in the haunting vocals. Towards the end of the album, it is about time to learn a bit more about Sisters of Mercy and it is a bit of a surprise. Notes of Cradle of Filth all of a sudden make sense, even though they could not be more opposed. The album gets a highly praised 4.
This album generated a lot of hype in me. Just flows really nice
I don't care how cheesy it is, this is cool as shit.
Heard before: no Not really my kind of music, but I can appreciate that the band have a strong sound - loved the drums and the groove.
Knew nothing about this album, at all. Had quite low expectations but was pleasantly surprised, a dark, almost gothic sounding album with chilling vocals
I knew of, but missed this band first time around. I enjoyed this a lot.
As I was listening I was like I know this...why do I know this? And then "This Corrosion" hit and I looked it up, The World's End with Simon Pegg. I think I looked them up when the film came up...must have checked out a few tracks as it seemed very familiar but at the same time I know I didn't listen to this when it came out...which considering musically what I was into at the time is a tad surprising.
1987, so must have scratched an itch I had back when I was 12. Enjoyed it all again.
Cool. I used to listen to this band before going to sleep a lot for some reason and I kind of Pavlov dogged myself. I could feel my eyes closing on their own even though it was only 2 PM while I was listening to this. Gothic rock is up my alley, but I prefer Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Nick Cave and the background music for Big Boo's Haunt in Super Mario 64. Still very good though - a 3.5/5
Enjoyed this album. Always a fan of 80s music and this cross between rock and synth was great to listen too. Felt like I could have been watching the Lost Boys movie. Definitely a dark goth feel to it. This Corrosion got me amped!
Kinda cool so far; a bit 80s, but not in a bad way.
broughton girlies get it x
Over the top goth/synth. Big fan of the single "This Corrosion". Enjoyed the listen.
Totally rad, gothy synthetic 80s pop stuff. Maybe like it better than Depeche mode
De va swag!
Damn this is a really good album, not sure how I missed it back in the day.. Lucretia My Reflection is a great great dance floor song...but every song is great not a dud among the 8 tracks. 4.5 🌟
Turn off the lights. Prepare a candle. We're about to get a little more....goth. Following the innovations to post-punk by Bauhaus and Siouxsie and The Banshees in 1979, Sisters Of Mercy would follow shortly after. Though not coming out with a first album until 1980, they would fit nicely in with the likes of The Cure and other gothic rock contemporaries. This brings us to Floodland, which is a perfectly reverb-drenched, rhythm-heavy album that's so dark, the vampires love it. If you're not big on gothic rock, there's no way you're going to like this record, as this is a prime example for the genre. There's a huge focus on atmosphere more than anything else, which may not be everyone's jam, but I think it's great.
Good album that has stood the test of time.
I always assumed 80s goth rock would be cheesy (the album cover didn't help), but this was quite good.
Not at all what I expected and really good. The album that has really surprised me most 50 into this exercise. Will definitely check out more Sisters of Mercy.
Is this Boney Ms evil twin?
Classic gothic rock is strange. I dig it.
Never heard of this album/group. First impression on seeing the cover: "Looks like three wolf moon... this is going to bad". Then I read this was an 80's goth/dark wave record and I was prepped for the worst... But I actually really enjoyed this record. I actually haven't listened to much "goth" or "dark wave" music. Maybe I should. There is some heavy use of 80's synths and production here... but this is not your top 40's cheezy 80's music. This is music for outsiders. Can hear the post-punk roots in this. Pretty cool record.
Love it. Also enjoyed reading about the evolution of Doktor Avalanche: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doktor_Avalanche
cracking album
Really enjoyed it. A new band to me.
271021 14:51 3.5
operatic goth rock. great drum programming, huge production stage.
This is a really good album frankly I don't know why I slept on it for so long. It's right in my 80s alternative wheelhouse. Starts out with a huge bang with the opener Dominion / Mother Russia. After the slow-burn of Flood I, Lucrative My Reflection picks up the pace with a driving bass that just won't quite. And this Corrosion presents itself as the centrepiece of a fine album. 4 🌟
3.75
Lucretia my Reflection is always a stand out for me. Big fan of this band. But to be fair, I haven't listened to them nearly as much as I would like to have. I don't have any super insightful takes on this. It sounds old, which to be honest isn't a bad thing in the case of this album. I think it works for it, Makes me want to wear sunglasses in the moonlight like Andrew Eldritch on the album cover. Which is hilarious to me. it's a fun listen.
I'm not sure what I'm listening to but... I like it? Hard to hear what's being said because the vocals are whispers and the instruments are loud, but still strangely enjoyable.
Pretty cool rock album.
Great album. 8/10
This may be the first emo sounding band I’ve ever immediately enjoyed. This record was truly something I’d never felt before. Only a few slow sections. Favorite Track : Dominion / Mother Russia Least Favorite Track : 1959
That first track, 'Dominion/Mother Russia' is an absolute banger, and there are a couple of tracks who almost reach those heights. The rest tends to slip back into fairly nondescript goth played on tinny synths and drum machines. At least the warbled singing keeps things interesting
When I read the genre ‘gothic rock’ I thought I’d not really enjoy it, but turns out it’s pretty cool. Similar to The Cure, and Flood II is uncannily similar to The Dandy Warhols’ “Boys Better”. Comfy resistors of the 80s trends
Ok gothic rock.
A man and his drum machine. Apparently, that's the nature of this love story. When doing research on Floodland, I got semi-confused as to who was in the band or should have been in the band or if this even was really The Sisters of Mercy. I gave up and it does not really matter in the end, as the singer and the drum machine are all that really matter. There is also a female in the band, except she didn't perform on this album? What I do know is this album sounds like Trent Reznor fronting the Cure. "1959" is a random piano ballad that does not feel out of place necessarily but has a much different vibe from the rest of the album. I think the beginning of "This Corrosion" sounded a bit like the group was going to start singing "We Built This City." There is a lot of influence from Joy Division that can be found here, though maybe it is the singer's voice that causes me to believe this. "This Corrosion" is very much Joy Division-influenced. In fact, much of this album is a goth version of Joy Division's sound (if you don't think Joy Division was goth enough to count as goth) and I didn't hate all of this. I don't know if I would listen to this again or not. My favorite songs: Dominion/Mother Russia Lucretia My Reflection. 1959 This Corrosion Driven Like the Snow
6/10 Super dated in that from the first 2-seconds od drum you know exactly when this came out. But not unpleasant, just not very exciting
Pretty cool album. Not entirely my style but can appreciate the guitar
Roll up, roll up! We got yer dark, goth-y '80s, right here!
I think I got my hopes alittle by accidentally finding out what they are classified as genre-wise. They are described as a goth/metal band, and I get the goth comparison but this wasn’t in anyway heavy enough for me to be like in love with the album. I will say I enjoyed its and I also appreciate that the album was pretty short and didn’t overstay its welcome. It was nice and atmospheric, I liked the songs “dominion”, “Lucretia my reflection”, “driven like snow”, and “never land”. Ultimately I just thought it wasn’t heavy enough for me, oh and I hate the cover. Something about the cover I think falls flat on its face. It feels like it’s trying to accomplish this like moody/dark/brooding look, but there’s just something corny and embarrassing about it. Like if/when I ever get a copy of this album I don’t think I’d ever display it. I’d just hide it on the shelf, that’s how cringey the cover is to me.
Siouxsie and the Banshees wannabes? Maybe, but it isn’t bad. This album seems to have come late to the Goth Rock scene, as the aforementioned Siouxsie had already by this time been viewed as an alternative music legend. I don’t recall the Goth scene after 1987, other than the pop success of the Cure and Depeche Mode, who were barely Goth at that point. My point is that, although this is considered essential to the genre, it doesn’t seem to have been overly influential. 3 stars.
Lucretia My Reflection is such an awesome song. I need a 30- minute version. This album was good, but a bit monotonous.
One of those albums that's not really for me, but I can completely understand why it's on the list. The influence of this album is immediately obvious, and it absolutely oozes atmosphere.
I’m at a 3.5 that I'll bump down to a 3. There’s a good sense of atmosphere here, but I just don’t think it ever gets married with a consistent enough vision. This album can’t decide if it wants to be moodier like The Cure or electronic like Depeche Mode, while dealing with its own crisis of the sole writer here taking potshots at his old bandmates instead of writing more fruitful lyrics, leading to a consistent yet dry soundscape & an inconsistent tonality to the album. I do think it generally sounds good despite the dryness of the soundscape, but there’s never a proper lift in any of these tracks that elevate them past being decently enjoyable. The tonality of this album is what hurts it the most; a few tracks carry a general analogy towards the Soviet Union & U.S. relations of the era as it relates to the band’s breakup & their own ‘cold war’ of sorts, but the introspection that comes with it initially is quickly replaced by a pettiness that just feels kinda childish. “This Corrosion” is the prime suspect here, and it might be one of the most useless 9 minute tracks throughout all the tracks we’ve gotten across 910 albums so far. There is a line between making an intentionally bad track & a bad track. “This Corrosion” tries to be the former, but the problem with writing an unappealing song is that you just end up creating something unappealing. Frank Zappa knew how to make an unappealing vibe the blatant joke of a song, due in part to at least a healthy respect for the styles he was doing pastiches of. Andrew Eldritch, on the other hand, is a man who released a single under a different band name just to stop his former bandmates from being able to use said name. Do you think that warrants any kind of healthy respect? What results from it is just 9 minutes of utterly trite music that goes nowhere, especially due to a lack of instrumental progression. It is a waste of 9 minutes on the album that perhaps could’ve gone to making sure “Never Land” was a bit more than just the 3 minute fragment it ends up being. Hence, a 3. A competent album, for sure, and when it finds its best grooves, it’s fun to listen to – “Lucretia My Reflection” is probably the highlight here, followed by “Flood II” & “Driven Like the Snow”. However, the album just sort of meanders without a top to bottom vision behind it, & with it being 45 minutes that largely don’t feel like they have something more meaningful to say, I just can’t find the throughline here to go any higher. I hear the appeal, but I don’t personally find it appealing. That said, I think it’s got a place on the list for those who do. For me, it’s just a 3.
I liked this album back when I was a moody teen early 20's something.....I still like it today....
Yeah, okay, it's a good goth album, but I didn't really warm to it. I was, and still am, a big fan of their early EPs and singles, and also their first album, but "Floodland"... I don't know, but I always found it a bit overdone. For me, my personal goth hype probably ended there. "This Corrosion" is okay. I always prefer it to "Lucretia," but whatever. I haven't listened to that album in a long time, and "The Sisters" haven't aged that well for me either.
Not bad, only ever heard their one big song, so was good to hear some others. Fairly samey though. Better than other stuff I've heard so far though.
Kind of a Cure knockoff but still good if you like the 80s synthesizer and bass forward sound.
H: this Halloween-esque album surprised me. It’s spooky and dark and the vocals fit the music perfectly. Most of the songs were pretty long, but in the end I didn’t mind it. 6.5/10 H fav song: Mother Russia Z: moody and spooky vibes defined this late 80’s album. I enjoyed the drums which had banging trash can sounding energy reminiscent of that late 80’s music sound. For fans: overcast weather, rebelling against parents and leather pants. 6.7/10 Z fav song: This Corrosion
Early dark wave. Laying the foundations for Joy Division et al to follow
I enjoyed it but the songs are too fucking long
This is fine but has nothing exceptional in it. Nice 80's vibe but a big half of the album is forgettable This corrosion and Dominion/mother russia
At some point it was 4, at another point it was 2.5, at best we entirely see it as 3
Catchy, 80s, Goths.
Quite ok
Kind of cool, and sometimes cheesy. I'm not sure I'd go back to this, but dark wave, which I never new existed, is better than new wave. 3/5
Not unpleasant! I like this sort of backgroundy 80s dance vibe
Floodland is supposedly the gold standard for 80s gothic rock. It’s got this massive, cinematic energy that hits hard with those dark, pulsing basslines and the drum machine backing everything up. When you get to tracks like "This Corrosion" and "Lucretia My Reflection", it’s pure, brooding theater in the best way possible. That said, the album really starts to lose its grip after a while. The production gets super repetitive, and once you realise every song is kind of following the same blueprint, the second half starts to feel like a bit of a slog. It’s a vibe for a few tracks, but eventually, the self serious atmosphere just starts to feel a little monotonous. Urgh.
176. ok
I didn’t think I had ever listened to The sisters of mercy until track one kicked in and ‘Dominion’ in its creepy way is sung and memories of my dad listening to the song came back from my childhood. Listening going to pick up friends who had been in a car crash made the albums haunting sound seem quite apt and ‘Lucretia my reflection’ and ‘Neverland’ were highlights for me. Not the greatest album but the memories it brought back were great. Best track- ‘Dominion’ Worst track- ‘flood II’ I mean they should have just been it both flood songs as one track imo. Overall not the greatest very middle of the road but the memories it brought back pushes the score up to a respectable 7/10
Sisters of Mercy A welcome revisit to an album that has sat on my shelf since release but one that I'd never really appreciated. Never realised this was pretty much an Andrew Eldritch solo album so the scale of ambition is admirable. The 'drums' are massive but very much of their time, but what a great time for huge echoey semi-industrial beats. So I love the sound and the singles absolute bangers, but then the rest, barring 1959, is pretty meh. What a shame. The Jim Steinman contributions are a mental goth meets Meat Loaf mashup. And Lucretia rolls with a irresistible momentum. So how to score an album 3 and a half great tracks? I'll give it a 7 Best Track - the bombastic colossus that is This Corrosion Worst track - Driven Like the Snow
I often put an album on to have something on in the background. Helps me focus. These goths settled into such a profound trance right off the bat, that it was literally two minutes before I forgot I even started the album. That's some serious gothitude right there. Once again, I am scratching my head at the inclusion of the album as a "must listen. to". It's goth. Was this some watershed album that inspired generations of goths to come? I don't know. That wasn't my scene. Competent. Probably won't listen again.
“Dominion/Mother Russia” is such a great intro that it’s hard for the rest of the album to keep that same energy going. The whole thing is incredibly ’80s in the best way possible, mixing upbeat rhythms with a goth atmosphere that I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did. That sneaky saxophone floating around in the background is perfect. There are definitely some misses here, but tracks like “This Corrosion” and “Lucretia My Reflection” are genuinely fun listens. Overall, though, it’s not really an album I see myself reaching for very often.
Dark & moist! ★★★
Emo mid rock album. Not inherently bad in isolation but we have had way to many mid rock albums from between 1960 and 1990. Its just kinda the same at this point.
80's goth rock sounds cool, but is just samey and boring. The same few melodies and bass lines keep repeating while accompanied by husky deep voiced vocals. It's too slow to be invigorating, too fast to be chill. It exists in a strange middle place. This isn't a critique against this record but against the genre as a whole. Goth seems to be more about the aesthetic than the music itself. Everyone knows what goths look like, but people (at least those not young in the 80's) rarely know what the music sounds like. Still this record knows its niche and dives hard for it. It isn't bad, just really not my thing. 5/10
Not bad but just didn't leave me with much of an impression, it's perfectly decent
Not 100% my thing but I enjoyed it well enough
The 80s packaged in a goth branding. It's fine.
A little too broody for me to listen to on the regular, but I did really enjoy it.
Maso
Creepy and cool
Gothic rock, dark wave.
It’s kind of reminding me of joy division. Gloomy, dark, gothic rock music. It is very cohesively themed.
more like a 2.75
I enjoyed that more than I was expecting to, however it does in large parts feel a little one paced and I’m not sure I’d ever want to revisit it. Plenty of 80s cliché’s flying around here from the synths to the power chords. Was picking up a bit of Depeche Mode too. I’d argue not enough variation for this to be sniffing a four.
Gothic rock eh? Not sure that's something I needed to hear. But I didn't mind this.
Gothic synths. Nothing much here to fall in love with, though had I been exposed to it in my younger years it might have latched a little harder.
Slow, dramatic, Gothic new-wave music sung by someone who sounds rather like David Bowie but isn't. Good production, solid performances, not my genre. It doesn't surprise me that the band's longest-serving member is the drum machine.
Highly influential gothic rock. Recommended if you like Type O or Paradise lost.
They can't seem to decide what sound they want to land on, but either way Buffalo Bill dances to this while he does his sewing.
It's pretty good, sort of has vibes of Depeche Mode or other New Wave artists, but with a darker streak. Unfortunately, as is so often the case with albums from this era, the songs are just too long for what they offer.
Not bad but also not memorable. Spooky vibes and some transitions were enjoyable and fun. Felt repetitive though and don’t think I would revisit
More Goth than emo, I kinda liked it
Perfect soundtrack for a goth teen sparkly vampire movie. I liked it more than I want to admit.
Very emo and very 80s, interesting mix
pleasantly bananas industrial pop, made more so by the mixing - most things melodic fairly normal, 10 seconds in BAM loudest drum machine of all time, before you have time to think the choir made up of every single person on earth kicks in and you're just off to the races for like nine minutes straight. probably euphoric if you're on the right drugs, but i found myself a little desensitized to it after not very long. the proto-darkwave Flood duo, slightly more tempered with very cool surrealist lyrics, are probably my favorite things here. hard to complain about, about as hard to feel passionately
Listened in the car. It's embarrassingly cringe but it's not so bad overall. I could see myself getting super into this in high school but these days not so much. It was fine.
There are good songs here, but I find the album experience a bit boring, unfortunately. The drum machine goth rock becomes very samey after a few songs and sometimes it's hard to distinguish where one song ends and where one starts. All in all, to have songs from this album as part of a playlist would be incredible, but as an album in its entirety... it's a 3/5
463/1089 - All style no substance unfortunately.
Standard 80s fare. It's fine.
