I just can't with Nick Cave & The Bad Music.
Exceeded expectations.
#178/1001 🇦🇺🇬🇧 Nick is one of my favourite artists and seeing live is nothing less than a religious experience. I can't say that this one of my favourites of his albums. I would trade this for Let Love In most days. Its often said that inside a Double Album that there is 1 great one. Both discs have their distinct identities and i think thats why this works so well. Abattoir Blues is the rocking gospel record whilst Orpheus has a more intimate Pastoral feel. There are many high points but the lyrics of Babe You Turn me on just make me cringe. Thank god there are amazing tracks like There She Goes My Beautiful World, Oh Children and Breathless to make this more easy to forgive. Best Tracks: Abattoir: There She Goes My Beautiful World, Get Ready For Love, Nature Boy, Hiding All Away. Orpheus: Oh Children, Breathless, Carry Me, Spell.
Back in the days of Limewire, i discovered Nick Cave and downloaded his back catalogue to immerse myself. This was my entry point and i still think it is his peak. Beautiful swirling, angry composition with Nicks vocal that oscilates between growl and croon. Lyrics of love and life that paint vivid pictures and above all some damn good songs. A thing of beauty.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at their best. This album is peak cave, Blixas influence is still there and Mick Harvey's touch is everywhere. The 1st disc is bombastic, passionate, raw, loud, thumping, sexy, and music to immerse in. The second disc shows a more tender and vulnerable side of Nick making it music to listen to. But whatever the mood the Seeds go with it and excel
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are in peak form here. dude has one of the most commanding presences of our time, and he’s one of the rare vocalists/lyricists who have me pulling up the lyric sheets to follow along. the band crushes the range of songs, from hard stompers to ethereal dirges. any group with Warren Ellis in the mix is gonna come with some supernatural stuff. not a single weak track here. we’re gonna get a few Nick Cave releases thru this list, and this was a very strong way to start. life affirming.
Holy fuck I love nick cave and this album, it’s genuinely beautiful and perfect
Incredibly pretentious, like all his stuff, but probably my favorite Cave album(s). The guitar is the star on the first disc and the piano on the second, but really, everything is basically perfect. It hits strong right out of the gate with Get Ready for Love, and travels all the way toward the haunting O Children choir with scarcely a bum note along the way. Okay, I could maybe do without the Ape song, but Cannibal's Hymn and Easy Money are among the best things he ever wrote, and they're only two of the standouts. When the chorus of "There is a war coming" bursts out in Hiding All Away, I still get chills.
a fantastic sprawl that bursts in giant and minuscule ways in the same breath. a major achievement of an album and not even their best
One of my personal faves of all time.
Was writing back and forth, fuck it - 5 stars
Riktigt imponerad! Av hela skivan.
Love this double album. I’ve always liked Nick Cave without going through his albums or discography in any real detail, and this album was a brilliant surprise. The first run of tracks on Disc 1 are utterly superb - anthemic, soulful and full of attitude, they explode in your ears and set the tone for the fantastic first disc that follows. I love the way the tracks build & create a wall of sound that I can only imagine sounding amazing live - the gospel alternative sound is just brilliant. The second disc is softer, more melodic, but equally as well written and produced.
Loved the vibe, perfect for a sunny weekend
Super!
Unexpectedly good album Hiding All Away The Lyre of Orpheus Babe, You Turn Me On Easy Money
Cool so classy
3rd Nick cave, and the previous 2 have a 5 combined. This is a 5 on its own. Where's this passion, this musicality been? Where's this passion come from? Absolutely fucking brilliant.
This album is so beautiful and enchanting... I mean, it's Nick Cave. But I've found it more than pleasant, I've found this album absolutely haunting and magnificent, with very delicate moments, but also a quite obscure sound, much of Cave's like, that matches so well the atmosphere of the album. I'm completely amazed by this album, truly, listening to it has also felt like a quick dream. It's great.
Two albums for the price of one, displaying the incredible range of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. What a joy.
Incredible delivery
And the 1001 run of generosity continues with an amazing gift from the creative collosus that is Nick Cave. Not an album I've heard before but it grabs you by the short and curlies from the get go. Intriguing lyrics. Unusual orchestration. And that's before you consider the high priest of music himself. 226 albums in and I really think this might be the first time I give 5* to an album I've never heard before. There you go. I've done it. 5*
One of my favourites, and frequently played loudly in my house. Brilliant!
I listened through this a few times trying to figure out exactly how I felt about it. It may be brilliant. I don’t have a total handle on it but my heart is calling this a 5.
Possibly Nicks greatest album. I love this
This album is perfect for me. One of my absolute favourite Nick Cave's albums. There's so much energy, sadness, joy and vitality in it. Great lyrics, great noisy music. Just greatness.
I never got into Nick Cave. He always seemed to pop up on every festival and my honest opinion on his performances was that they were not interesting. Just seemed like something my dad would be into. I gave it a real listen and actually already knew a lot of these songs. I get it, he's a great writer. What I usually like is artists showing their musical skills with playing. I guess his skill is songwriting. I listened to the album 4 times during the weekend. I might be a Nick Cave fan after all. Just not a Nick Cave concert goer.
Haven't got through both disks yet but loving it. Love Nick and the band joined by the choir. The preacher routine to the choir's gospel on There She Goes, My Beautiful World could be right out of Talking Heads True Stories.
The first Nick Cave song I ever heard that introduced me to him was O Children in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the scene when Harry and Hermoine are dancing. I think that's a lovely song and suited that scene perfectly. I enjoy the vibe of the rest of the album and definitely prefer it over Henry's Dream. It's a bit dramatic/theatrical at times with a dash of madness, but there are also some touching ballads and love songs. I'm a big fan of his vocal tone and I really like the choir that accompanies him in many of the songs. They create some really nice harmonies. Overall, I find this to be a very unique and enjoyable album.
Loved this album, I can't be an impartial judge
Suspected I would love this. And I did.
This album slaps lol
This is actually one of the best albums of all time. If you don’t at least like this you should honestly probably give up on albums. They say there’s no accounting for taste but there’s a fundamentally Godlike songcraft on display here.
Not a huge Nick Cave guy, but this is an epic, sprawling, engaging double album with a handful of great songs.
I
Just wonderful from start to finish. I'm usually quite wary of double albums as they usually massively overstay their welcome, but I enjoyed all of this. Introspective and bombastic at times. He's a horny bastard, mind.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus stands as one of the most confident and creatively unbound statements in the band’s long career. It’s a double album that never feels indulgent, largely because Cave and his ever‑shape‑shifting ensemble approach the material with a rare combination of urgency, wit, and almost architectural precision. What emerges is a work that feels both monumental and strangely intimate, a testament to a band operating at full command of its powers. Abattoir Blues is the more muscular of the two halves, driven by Jim Sclavunos’ thunderous percussion and a gospel choir that feels less like ornamentation and more like a Greek chorus egging Cave toward revelation. Tracks like “Hiding All Away” and “There She Goes, My Beautiful World” channel a kind of ecstatic propulsion—Cave preaching, pleading, and prodding the universe for meaning with a ferocity that borders on the liturgical. It’s rock music with a sense of ceremony. By contrast, The Lyre of Orpheus is sly, spacious, and mischievously mythic. Cave leans into his storyteller instincts, weaving narratives that feel ancient and modern in the same breath. The arrangements are deceptively simple, allowing the lyrics to take center stage, but the Bad Seeds’ subtlety is the real magic trick here—every violin sigh, every guitar shimmer, every brush of percussion feels meticulously placed yet effortlessly organic. What makes the album so compelling is the interplay between these two worlds: the apocalyptic and the pastoral, the sacred and the profane. Cave has always thrived in the tension between extremes, but here he seems to revel in it. The result is a double album that feels not like a sprawl but like a diptych—two panels in conversation, each enriching the other. Nearly two decades on, Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus still sounds like a band refusing to choose between grandeur and nuance, instead embracing both with a kind of fearless elegance. It’s a record that rewards deep listening, not because it’s difficult, but because it’s alive—restless, generous, and endlessly inventive.
Fantastic! Almost a gospel album but also I think more accessible to the general public than some of his other stuff. "Get Ready For Love" "Hiding All Away" "Nature Boy" and "Breathless" were faves on here.
Nick Cave is an artist who I've always heard really good things about but have never gotten around to checking out. I was a little weary of the length of this going in with this being 17 songs long over 2 discs and over 80 minutes in length, but after listening to this I can safely say that it more than earns that runtime. I think that mainly comes down to both sides of the album being so different sonically, so I didn't have a chance to get tired of the album's sound before it moved into something completely different. Abattoir Blues is the first and the louder side of the album, being made up of 9 anthemic, bluesy alt rock songs with super catchy choruses and a lot of gospel-esque backing vocals. I wasn't too familiar with Nick Cave's style going into this but I loved his vocals here, and I thought he brought so much character and personality to all of these songs, even the ones towards the end which didn't hit as hard instrumentally. The Lyre Of Orpheus is the second disc and far softer in its sound than the first disc, with a huge focus on acoustic guitar and keys. I thought this was a bit more consistent than the first side, even if I thought that Abattoir Blues had the higher highs. Some of the album's lyrical highlights are found on this side too, with the song "The Lyre Of Orpheus" being a huge highlight for me, showing off Nick's ability to tell an engaging story throughout a song whilst not sacrificing any of the charm or catchiness found on the other songs on the album. Overall, while I didn't know what to expect from this going in, I came out of this loving a majority of what I heard. While there are a few songs that don't hit as hard as others, I thought pretty much every track here brought something interesting to the table and despite the lengthy runtime, I thought this actually flew by and didn't drag at all. This definitely has me interested in checking out more from Nick Cave, because this was pretty fucking amazing. Fav Songs: There She Goes My Beautiful World, O Children, Get Ready For Love, The Lyre Of Orpheus Least Fav: Fable of the Brown Ape 9.1/10
I'm more familiar with Nick Cave when it comes to The Birthday Party (which is on the list, interestingly enough), and The Bad Seeds quite frankly have a ton of albums and they don't sound enough like The Birthday Party enough for me want to dive in--until this project. Seeing how there's five (!) Bad Seeds albums on this list, I'm not quite sure if it's the best introduction to the band or the worst. I'll find out. As I've learned, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds had some hands indeed. 82 minutes across 17 songs and not one of them feels like filler. Like an Australian Tom Waits with a bigger backing group and many more harmonies. Solid stuff.
There She Goes, My Beautiful World is hands down one of the best songs ever written.
Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus — Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds There She Goes, My Beautiful World особенно показательная. 2️⃣ Вторая половина это The Lyre of Orpheus.
I have no energy to write a big review, so let's keep it simple : given the reputation of Nick Cave as a very pretentious man, I expected something way more quiet and obtuse with a put-on intellectual attitude ... In short, some poser shit. Pretty happy to see that I was completely wrong and, in retrospect, an uninformed judgemental idiot. It starts with a bang (Get Ready For Love) that sounds like 70's synthy hard-rock, elevated by a gospel choir that is great and is present all the way through the album. On two discs every song sounds different but keeps a mix between high (old-school) rock energy (resonating drums, typically rock'n'roll piano, mellotron, the aforementioned gospel choir ...) and elements of blues (duh), country, folk, lots of things. The quieter and more bombastic moments shine in harmony with each other, in fact there's a sort of ever present tension within the album (Hide It All Away is a good example) when even when it's quiet and restrained it feels like it's about to explode, always crescendoing. It's simultaneously very dense and rich with great arrangements and tons of different elements, and yet instantly catchy and electric, which is what I want in rock and music as a whole. Not much else to say ... Oh yeah, I love There She Goes My Beautiful World, perfect. Thank you mister Cave, I'll be coming back for you. I know where you live now, you can't hide from me.
A great album. I even have it on CD, but I haven't listened to it in a long time. I should do that more often, even though it's not Nick Cave's strongest album. 5/5
Was not expecting Gothic gospel rock, but I'm happy to have heard it. This album is loud, over the top, self-serious, and dramatic, and despite all if that it works very well. Cave has an ability to transform what should be the most pretentious album I've ever heard into something inspired and deep. This is the first album of his I've listened to, and I'm excited to listen to more because my God this album was an experience. Highlights include are Get Ready for Love, Hiding All Away, There She Goes, My Beautiful World, The Lyre of Orpheus, and Easy Money.
christ, another one(two) that I do not need to listen to but gladly will. wall-to-wall absolute bangers across these two discs
Previous Nick Cave albums I have heard have been slightly disappointing, even though he seems like the sort of artist I should really like. So I wasn't particularly looking forward to this double album, but it's excellent. Lots of hard edges, a few good choruses and the gospel elements really work with the dark blues core. A rare five stars on first listen
Балдею с обложки, с песни there she goes, my beautiful world.
Лучшие композиции - there she goes, my beautiful world, the lyre of orpheus, breathless, ну и завершать альбом o children это просто незаконно круто
There she goes, my beautiful world - любимый трек, на репите со вчера.
Loved it
As someone who is more of a casual Nick Cave listener than a die-hard fan, I’ve previously swerved this album as it’s a double. Turns out that was a mistake, as it’s now my favourite. Loved it.
Have listened to most of this before, two albums in one is a bit daunting but my god I’m slowly understanding the Nick Cave cult. Stand out is of course O My Children, but I find the albums beautifully cohesive intertwined with strong storytelling.
so good vary chill but nice mellody
Hell yes! 322 albums into this project and I finally get a Nick Cave album, and not just any Nick Cave album, but probably my favourite Nick Cave album! Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus showcases pretty much everything one comes to expect from a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album. It starts off with some high energy, gospel infused rock and roll with the Bad Seeds firing on all cylinders on tracks like Get Ready for Love and There She Goes, My Beautiful World, Cave's twisted storytelling is highlighted on tracks like the Fable of the Brown Ape and Lyre of Orpheus, and it ends with some more restrained and delicate moments like Breathless, Babe, You Turn Me On, and O Children. A double album is always a bit daunting due to its length, and may not be the best starting point for someone who is unfamiliar with an artist, but admittedly I didn't realize this was a double album until recently despite having listened to it in its entirety many times in the past. I feel that the sequencing and arranging of Abattoir Blues / the Lyre of Orpheus is done so masterfully that I never noticed how long it was. Not to mention there's really not a bad track on this entire album.
not only is it consistent, but nick cave is able to keep this consistency for an entire hour and a half straight.
Number 120 of my 1001 albums and let me be quite clear, this album should be rated 10, 5 is not enough. Utter genius from start to finish. Anyone who rates this less than 5 and does not consider this album as essential really should give up now, music is not for you my friend.
nick cave te quiero
juste pour o children banger
I love Nick Cave. In a feeble effort to be objective I considered giving this a 4, but only because there are other Cave albums I love much more. Then 'Supernaturally' came on, I danced and sang like an idiot, and realised I had to give it a 5. The way Cave's voice sometimes cracks, the way he'll hesitate halfway through a word or a line, the way the music sometimes soars out of nowhere, I adore it all. It has a hotline right to my senses, it makes the hairs on my arms prickle up, it fills me with... I don't know what, emotion maybe. It's all so fucking majestic.
I really dig Nick Cave and this LP is outstanding!
A fun and varied album with a killer band, great tunes, and Nick Cave's poetic lyricism. This has officially become my favorite Nick Cave album in no small part because of the ground it covers and the varied influences in incorporates.
I tend to find Nick Cave a bit hit or miss. I kind of love his music but only in small doses and some is kind of forgettable. So I was a little weary of listening to a double album (really two albums put together). But I was really impressed with this release and think it's some of his strongest material. Shifting between heavy dark-themed blues rock on the first disc, and lighter material on the second, there's nothing very obviously different from his previous work. Yet this material, marking a late comeback from some disappointing work, manages to balance the sound better by introducing a greater range of styles and the frequent use of a choir to counterbalance the murkiness of Cave's vocals and the Bad Seeds playing. There's a lot to digest and it does drag a bit halfway through the second disc. But there's also a lot to love. It will require some repeated listens to full absorb it all. This may be my favorite Nick Cave album yet.
Heavenly!
Spiritual
A masterpiece from an undoubted genius.
This being the 3rd Nick Cave album this list has given me, I was more than ready to just shrug it off -- he's undoubtedly a legendary bandleader, but his style has rarely connected with me over past listens, largely in part due to the melancholy songwriting style and merciless amount of lyrics in every song. But I'll admit to being mildly blown away by this double album. It's a haul, for sure, but unlike some of his other work, this one had true 'highs' to offset his many 'lows' -- as another reviewer put it, a journey through shadows and light. The most deserving Nick Cave album to belong on this list IMO.
Really good
I'm a fan of Nick Cave but couldn't name a song or album. This album is great, nothing really stands out but it's just great music
Really loved this album, probably had the most favorites off of this album then any of the previous ones
This is a fantastic release. Nick Cave is one of those artists I struggled to care for prior to this project, who I now appreciate to the point of considering myself a fan. I've actively sought out more of his content in recent months, and indeed Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus is one such album I already discovered after a previous Bad Seeds record came up here and piqued my interest. It's a joy to listen to again. I have to say that Breathless is an absolute treasure of a song. It may well be my favourite single-song discovery along this whole journey. It invokes such joy, such desire; terms I would never previously associate with Cave. This song marked my turning point in seeing him as the genius he really is. O Children was another highlight, as were Nature Boy and Abattoir Blues. The juxtaposition of the crisp rockin' blues of Disc 1 against the softer folksy gospel of Disc 2 is superb. I love it. It's deserving of the highest accolade.
I was actually listening to Nick Cave earlier in the day. Such a full sound, great lyrics, absolute treat.
All time greats, shaped my teen years and ushered me into my twenties
This was the first Nick Cave album I bought as it looked interesting. It remains one of his best. It has melody, it has beautiful instrumentation and orchestration. It has all the atmosphere you'll need. It has darkness and light. It has beauty (the Johnny Cash tribute Let the Bells Ring is just lovely with some excellent lines). And it smacks. The buildup in Hiding All Away, There She Goes My Beautiful World, Nature Boy, Supernaturally. Just amazing.
This is quite stunning, the songs sound great, I love the use of the choir stuff behind his vocals, the overall atmosphere is consistently great and suits the tone of the lyrics. Had this been a single album it would be an easy 5/5, but I find double albums annoying generally and I think in comparison to the rest of it there is a slight drop off in the second half (although that could be double album listener fatigue!!). There she goes my beautiful world is absolutely glorious in every respect and that alone nearly makes up for anything. I really want to give it a 5, but the double album thing annoys me so much. Gah. Stuff it I love there she goes and it's won me over.
Apocalyptic gospel on one side, haunted lullabies on the other. Rating: 4.9/5 Short Review: This album feels huge and intimate at the same time. One half roars with choir and fire, the other whispers with myth and melancholy. It is dramatic without excess and deeply human throughout. Favorite Track: There She Goes, My Beautiful World. Urgent, soaring, and endlessly alive.
Good. Emotive. Big stuff. Some small stuff. Quite liked it.
Favourite Nick Cave album. Or maybe Let Love In.
This reminds me of the East Village around Tompkins Park. Always leaning into the bohemian. Sundays start slow and quiet, but the heart beat is always strong. It’s raw, unwavering, and beautiful. Beautifully ugly at times.
Another fine album from Nick Cave. Not, I think, up there with his best but very good.
disco 2 superior
Wonderful up to bottom
I love Nick Cave and I know this about myself, so why don't I listen to his music more? I love the energy, the slam poetry reading vibes of Cave's vocals, the unexpected lyrics. Each song has a totally different character, and the gospel elements work into different tracks in such wonderful ways to accent the emotion. I find it difficult to give an album I'm only hearing for the first time 5 stars, but if this album isn't worth it, what will be?
Another astounding testament to Nick Cave’s creativity and to his depth of spirit. The central conceit, that this is really two different albums which happened to be released on the same day is not sustainable on the evidence. Lyre is perhaps marginally more laid back but I suspect this is more to do with tracking than with any essential distinction of purpose between the two record; it’s a double album. Musically it’s rocky and the band create an impressively hook-laden and solid sound. They use the end of chorus drop out to good effect. The gospel choir is a great addition, a layer between singer and band which gives the whole a sonic breath. Lyrically there are what are ostensibly love songs, though this being Nick Cave these are poetic, surprising and allusive. There’s a gothic darkness too many of the songs but, this being Cave, a decent dose of hope too.
Damn...awesome!
Great double album from Mr Cave, consistently good songs.
I know a handful of songs from Nick Cave and The Bad seeds but this album is superb! Played it three times during my day.
I love the O children . Im glad i listened to this playlist and discovered hhis pearl.
It's pretty great. Maybe I don't revisit it as much as some of my other 5 stars, but it's sooo long.
In terms of musical competition, this is probably the strongest Nick Cave album I have heard. His discography is huge and I have not explored all of it, but this one stands out. In the early spring of 2020, during that strange pocket of hope in the middle of the pandemic, I visited the Nick Cave Experience in Copenhagen. It was an excellent exhibition and the first time I truly had the chance to dwell on Cave as both an artist and a person. The airplane puke bags filled with lyrics, the reconstruction of his Berlin apartment lined with the books that shaped him, and the sheer scope of his creative output showed how many layers there are to his work. Most of all, the amount of writing was overwhelming in the best way. Listening to Abattoir Blues and The Lyre of Orpheus with all of that in mind, it suddenly made perfect sense. The lyrical weight, the way the songs are constructed, the tension and release within the band’s dynamics all feel like the work of someone who has lived inside language and sound for decades. The album becomes a place where that dedication comes together. For anyone who still does not fully grasp Nick Cave, my usual recommendation remains. See him live. With The Bad Seeds or solo, the setting does not matter. The live experience has a way of pulling even the most skeptical listener into his world. This album carries some of that same power, dramatic, literate, and fully alive.
Like many Nick Cave albums, it can be maddening, inconsistent, even frustrating. Yet its brilliant moments are worth all of that and more. This could be my one desert island album.
Somehow, not a wasted moment the entire runtime. Im not the biggest fan and I assumed this was an 80's/early 90s effort. Turns out that's more of a grand finale. What a bange!!!
Have enjoyed other albums of NC before, never heard this, and it’s brilliant
I love you Nick 💗💗💗
Like seeing an old friend come up in my feed. Cave and his music is far too deep and intricate for me to sum up in a few sentences. If you like this, there are like a dozen other albums just as great, each with their own unique sound - start with Murder Ballads. Go read his responses to fan questions at Red Hand Files. And go see him live if you ever get the chance. His 2017 tour stop here was one of the best shows of my life.
I forgot how good this is. Haven’t listened to it in years but this is definitely one of my favorite Nick Cave albums. The contrast between the gospel tinged hellfire of disc 1 and the ballads of disc 2 is awesome. And the fact that it all works is incredible. A great comeback after some forgettable releases.
Nick Cave is the GOAT
Nick Bare can have my kids after this one. Singer-songwriter vibes with godly instrumentals and bigger production.
I really dig this. The guitar and piano is so good.
This is music which deserves attention that I did not always give it. But there is plenty of variety and intention behind every track. It has plenty of truly excellent songs and even though not every track is a 5 star, the average quality is very high
Iconic album, sultry voice, great rock. Stronger in the back end. 4/5
I love it!
It’s been so long since I had a 5 star album, much less one I’d never heard before.
What a nice surprise. Had never listened to Nick Cave outside of Red Right Hand thanks to Dumb and Dumber. Loved this album. Good variety. Some amazing high energy songs with a huge sound. Love an upbeat piano based song. Clever lyrics. This album is both made well made and makes you feel something. It's also just kind of different and feels like a breath of fresh air. Standout songs include: Get Ready for Love Hiding All Away (personal favorite) There She Goes, My Beautiful World Nature Boy Supernaturally Carry Me
Really cool album on a long drive. Very dark in places and melodic throughout.
this is the kind of sugar papa likes
Really a great album. Personally I enjoyed the first half more than the second, but overall, amazing. Maybe the first full Nick Cave album I’ve listened to besides Murder Ballads. The gospel choir and the vibe of the album is ‘fun’ and light compared to MB, and the songs have more depth which is cool to see.
An excellent new find!
I was excited to see Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus on the list today. As a huge Nick Cave fan, I realized it’s been a long time since I last gave this one a proper listen. Going in, my view was that there are far stronger Bad Seeds albums—The Boatman’s Call and Let Love In are particularly brilliant. I never really connected with this record when it came out, apart from the standout tracks Get Ready for Love and Breathless. Still, I was curious to revisit it and see if my opinion had shifted. As a double album, Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus has room to stretch out, offering a wide range of styles—rock, ballads, and slower bluesy numbers. The variety really works, and Nick’s vocals sound fantastic throughout. The Bad Seeds are in top form too, delivering a full, powerful rock and roll sound. The whole record is bigger, louder, and ultimately better than I remembered. I also enjoyed rediscovering songs I’d forgotten about, like Cannibal’s Hymn, Hiding All Away, and Messiah Ward. Side one in particular feels especially strong. Add to that the gems O Children and There She Goes, My Beautiful World, which are just gorgeous songs. And of course, there’s Breathless—a moment of pure joy and one of my absolute favourite Bad Seeds tracks. Favourite track: Breathless Least favourite track: None that truly fall flat Album artwork: A really classy cover
255/1089 - I was initially apprehensive about listening to this. Nick Cave has many albums on this list, which is usually a red flag for me since my taste doesn't heavily align with Dimery. It also is a double album so I'd be commiting to the sound for a while. So I listened, and it was pretty good! The songs are simple and somewhat repetitive but have slightly atypical instrumentation and do enough interesting things with texture and Nick Cave's voice to keep the songs fresh. Overall, a pleasent surprise. Now I hope I get all of the Neil Young or Elvis Costello albums in a row so I never have to listen to them again.
This has been my favorite Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album for the past year.
Beautiful melancholy splendour. Probably the strongest concept album I've gotten so far.
9/10 Hmm, see, I owned this back in 2004 and, while I like it well enough, I certainly didn't love it. Maybe I was still hungover from the Strokes and it was a bit dark for me. Listening to it today was a revelation. The first disk is stonking, with Nick Cave coaxing his gospel rock through a rip-roaring set. I love how he manifests the unhinged band leader, barely controlling the music as it surges and crashes around him. He's like Prospero conjuring his storm - the guitars howl, the drums and bass throb while the choir build and moan, with those beautiful snatches of blue sky that give you some light to hang on to. Excellent.
There She Goes, My Beautiful World <3
Nicky Cave with another album save
I was introduced to this music through the Peaky Blinders TV show. I didn't think I could acquire any new bands that I liked but the minute I heard them I knew they were fantastic. This is the second time I've listened to this album and every song on it is a banger. Abattoir blues is my favorite
The only Nick Cave album I’ve ever heard was when I generated Murder Ballads nearly a year ago and I absolutely love that one, probably in my top 5 new discoveries so far. As a result I had high expectations going in and it more than met them, this is bloody BRILLIANT. I still prefer Murder Ballads out of the two but it is very close between them. Top Track - There She Goes, My Beautiful World. Banger of a song
I don't know why exactly, but I wasn't that interested in this album when it came out. But my God, I'm pleased to have been forced to listen to it in full because of this list. This has been an absolutely great rediscovery! Not sure why I left this record out of my repeatedly played Cave records - maybe because of the gospel choir and my dislike for soul searching at that time - but it's a gem! The gospel elements here aren't preachy; they're more about exploring the power and mystery of faith rather than endorsing it. From the opening song "Get Ready for Love" to the typical storytelling of Cave on "Cannibal Hymn" and "Abattoir Blues" to the soulful "Nature Boy" this album demands your attention. The second album is more introverted but just as well crafted. "The Lyre of Orpheus" is more intimate, and has a beautifully reflective quality. Releasing it as a double album shows Cave at his complete range. I can go on forever, but I'll leave it at that - another 5/5!
great lyrics, great tunes!
Great artist great album
Great album that I've listen to quite a bit before. Favourite is Easy Money.
I was very surprised at this. I just absolutely could not get into Murder Ballads, my only Nick Cave listening experience before so I was going into this double album with some bias, but it was really really good. I went all the way to 5 stars on this one. I'll be listening again, don't let Murder Ballads turn you away from this one!
I've always liked Nick Cave, but I haven't gotten that much into him. I really should. This is an absolute all-time banger album.
- Pretty fuckin' good .... thanks to the list for giving me this one. -
Abattoir Blues: The mashup of Springsteen and The Cure I never knew I needed it. An unexpected delight. The Lyre of Orpheus: It’s really not that surprising that Nick Cave does introspective and soulful well. Some beautiful imagery on display here. Two very distinct albums that complement each other very well. This one is quite an accomplishment.
I love how I started this project hating Nick Cave, but after having had a few albums of his, I can now confidently say how much I love this. It's so dark in a really beautiful voice, and Jesus Christ what a voice that's on show. If anything this being a double album isn't enough, every moment was so good that I just wanted it to keep going.
Hectical and harmonious. A good jam from beginning to end. Nick's voice is another glorious instrument amongst the symphony of the band.
Amazing, loved to discover his music and listen to more of this kind of music. I danced a lot and I felt like I want to be in stage or listen to them live
I like this
Incredible album. A double album that is virtually a no skip album is pretty rare. But this is so close.
I typically struggle with double albums. It's extremely rare for an artist to have so much great material that there's no filler (there's often an album and a half of good material, and they seem to feel obligated to pad it out to a full 2 sides), so I was prepared to give this 3 or 4 stars before listening purely on that basis. However, there's just no weakness here. I didn't identify any songs I would rather have been excluded, and there's good variety throughout. Cave is one of the great musical storytellers.
I think I FINALLY get Nick Cave
This album is like walking into a church in a small town in middle America. The town has a small population, but come Sunday morning, everyone is here. The floorboards are dusty, and the pews creak when you sit down. The priest cuts the figure of a tired and beaten down man, weathered by life itself and all of its experiences. However when he speaks, you feel as if he is speaking directly to you, and everybody else in the congregation fades into oblivion. The charismatic priest gives a sermon that speaks of love, loss and menace. At the end of it, you walk away not sure if you have been blessed or hexed, but you have definitely been enthralled.
These ballads are great! I love the Orpheus song
Cannibal's Hymn and Easy Money are the masterpieces!
Maybe the least memorable of Nick Cave’s entire discography, but still a perfect album. Favorites: - Get ready for love (good old punk rock to open the album, reminiscent of Cave’s earliest albums) - Hiding all away (terrific vocal performance, sounding like a priest) - There she goes, my beautiful world (more on the pop side, with a beautiful chorus) - Abattoir blues (pure Nick Cave, a song only he could write) - Breathless (a nice slow) - Supernaturally (surprisingly fun song, with a really good rythmic section) - O Children (what can I say? Maybe one of the best songs ever)
Magical album when I first heard it come out, masterpiece. If you listen to one Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album - listen to this.
phenomenal
Just unreal
Really didn't expect this. Whether it was Nick Cave's image or the few songs I've heard from other albums, I was expecting something gothic, dark and offbeat. Instead this was musical, largely upbeat and really soulful. Fantastic album, will absolutely return.
I’m stunned. I loved all of it, the rocking first album and the quieter second album. Here is another singular talent I hadn’t heard before, crafting spells with poetry and sound. I look forward to hearing more.
Hm her şeyi çok sevdim.
Absolutely exceptional album. I had never heard any music from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds before but had seen comments from others using this website that they discovered this band through the list and were now huge fans. I can confirm I am now one of those people. I loved the composition of the album and the choice of instrumentation. The piano, drums and bass stood out especially. There was so much variety throughout that by the time the 1 hour 22 mins was over, I wanted more and had to immediately relisten to a few songs. My favourite songs were “Get Ready for Love”, “There She Goes, My Beautiful World” and “The Lyre of Orpheus”. An easy 5 star album for me with no skips!
What an amazing masterpiece, I only knew O children which is a song I’m very fond of but the whole album is a perfect construct.
I love Nick Cave so much, but this not actually a record I’ve spent an overabundance of time on. I really love his early work, with Henry’s Dream, Let Love In, and Murder Ballads being the real sweet spot in his body of work for me. I kind of checked out with him post-Boatman’s Call, so I’m looking forward to this one since I really haven't listened to it more than once in the past, and that was probably 20 years ago. Just finished. What a baller record. I can’t believe it’s taken me 20 years to come back and sit with this record. I checked out after No More Shall We Part. After the weepiness of Boatman’s Call (which was good, but not my favorite side of Nick Cave) and leaning more into that with NMSWP, I gave up the proverbial ghost with Nick Cave. I’d even listened to bits of late records where he just seemingly quit giving a shit about rhyme schemes and writing songs that were pleasant to listen to. But this record fits, probably most sweetly, into that sweet spot. It has balls and heart. It might be one of his most “front to back” listenable records. He has written a good many songs that surpass many on this record (though there a few that hang with the best of his songs), but this is one of his best records as a whole. I will be putting this in my regular rotation. 5/5
Another home run! Have had this album since it was first released. Top of their form here.
Otro favorito a mi colección realmente.
Wow, this is so good. Normally not a fan of double albums but there isn’t a filler song on here. Like two solid albums released at once. Beautiful, soulful, rich music that is loaded with every emotion available. You know it’s something special when you finish a double album and immediately start it over again.
Masterpiece. Every song is magnificent.
Vyborny album
I was very surprised when I listened to this. I could hear definite influence from the stars of 70s. I liked this alot
Fabulous!!
Do I even need to say it? I loved this album
Büro, Heidenheim, Deutschland Fantastisches Album, ausschließlich Hits!
An eclectic, sprawling, wonderful double album. Wonderful. 5 stars. Would I buy this album - I did, upon it's original release. Would I listen again? Most certainly. Disc one: Abattoir Blues 1. "Get Ready for Love" 5:05 - Rollicking, sprawling, rocking and loud. This type of Bad Seeds song hasn't been heard for a while. Great backing vocals. What an opener. 5* 2. "Cannibal's Hymn" 4:54 - Slower paced, dissonate sounds, lovely melody. The percussion is great. Great vocals. 5* 3. "Hiding All Away" 6:31 - Another in the line of Bad Seeds story/narrative songs. It sounds desperate, aggressive, dangerous and loud. 5*. 4. "Messiah Ward" 5:14 - Back to the more mellow sounds. Nice groove and melody. Subtle backing vocals. Good chorus. 4* 5. "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" 5:17. - A truly wonderful song. 5* 6. "Nature Boy" 4:54 - This song whizzes by and seems short, but isn't. It's to the point. 5* 7. "Abattoir Blues" 3:58 - Percussive, musically, drums and Piano. slower paced. Nice backing vocals. 4* 8. "Let the Bells Ring" 4:26 - Uplifting and up tempo. 4* 9. "Fable of the Brown Ape" 2:45- Interesting. Great dynamics. 4* 41/45 Disc two: The Lyre of Orpheus 1. "The Lyre of Orpheus" 5:36 - Brilliant. It has that "Bad Seeds" sound. You know it's them before the vocals kick in. 5* 2. "Breathless" 3:13 - This is a super song. Romantic and beautiful. 5* 3. "Babe, You Turn Me On" 4:21 - Another stunning beautiful song. Love the lyrics. 5* 4. "Easy Money" 6:43 - Warren Ellis influenced. Another wonderful song. Languid in its sound, not necessarily lyrically. 5* 5. "Supernaturally" 4:37 A change of mood, tempo and rhythms. Great chorus. 4* 6. "Spell" 4:25 Another slow, atmospheric number with lovely backing from the Bad Speeds and a haunting Violin in the background. 4* 7. "Carry Me" 3:37 Swirling, dramatic introduction that carries on through the verses. Lovely call and response between Nick Cave and the backing vocalists for the chorus. Soulful. 5* 8. "O Children" 6:51 - Ah, what is now known as the 'Harry Potter Song'. Just fantastic. Emotional and beautiful 5* 38/40 79/85
Perfect
Abbatoir - 5/5 Orpheus - 4/5
Again an outstanding, heartfelt offering from Cave. The structure is simple and even repetitive but he makes it work so well. Sung poems. 4.6
A really great listen. I love Nick Cave. Mostly know him for his blog and Murder Ballads. I liked this one.
I absolutely adore Nick Cave and this album is a masterpiece.
There She Goes My Beautiful World, Breathless and Supernaturally are some of my favourite Nick Cave songs. The chorus to Easy Money will just randomly pop into my head every now and then it's so pretty. |They make the music more accessible than albums like Murder Ballads, but without losing any of it's brilliance. Another 5 Stars for the Bad Seeds.
This was such a blast, and I will be returning to it to pay closer attention to the lyrics. One a first pass I had no idea what I was in for and it was excellent rock and blues with a folk lyricism. I really loved it.
Unsure if it's one of the better 4s or worse 5s, but the Lyre, apart from being scary long is a appealing composition with high dynamism, and epicness that I adore. Tainted by memory of that British girl who told me to listen to Nick Cave and ghosted me after 2 years
This is a brilliant album. It’s probably also going to trigger me returning to Tropical Fuck Storm. It’s a lovely blend of witty vocals, strong guitar and complementary percussion etc, building a sound calibrated with just the right amount of chaos/irreverence alongside great musical foundations. A great find as someone who’s never really given Nick Cave a pop.
This album is almost masterpiece material. The variety, influences, musicianship, and lyrics are all outstanding. It’s a double album but really functions a lot like two very distinct, individual albums. I really really liked this one.
One of best albums ever
well, it's great isn't it
It's Nick Cave, so I'm already sold... Not every song hits, but the album as a whole does. Last track is the perfect ending...
Fav: There She Goes, My Beautiful World Least Fav: Abbatoir Blues Individually, Abattoir Blues is a 4/5 and The Lyre Of Orpheus is a 5/5, however I think it’s a 5 overall. I assumed that Nick Cave was a singer-songwriter but to my surprise this album had a lot more rock than I had anticipated, another pleasant surprise from the list
Beautiful.
9.5/10 I haven't often committed to listening to a full Nick Cave album (I think only Ghosts and perhaps one other prior to this,) but now I'm sure that I've been missing out because this album is simply majestic I had started doing individual write-ups for each song, but let it suffice to say that I enjoy virtually all of them - considering this is a double album the songwriting is astoundingly consistent. I think I do have to be in a certain mood to listen to this given the darker tones in places and some of the melody choices being slightly too ploddy for me, yet even songs which on initial listens grated on me have endeared themselves either through fantastic lyricism (The Lyre of Orpheus) dramatic crescendos (Hiding All Away) or sheer novelty (Brown Ape). Overall, Cave's clever lyricism and alluring vocal performances are beautifully supplemented by the gospel backing singers, and the album strikes a perfect tonal balance, with songs like 'There She Goes, My Beautiful World' breaking through its overall dark tone. Standout songs: Cannibal's Hymn, Nature Boy, Breathless, O Children (although ask me a different day and get a different answer). Listens: 10+
This was great. I hadn't heard of Nick Cave before, but this was absolutely great. His voice is very reminiscent of David Bowie and the grooves on this album were just really smooth and nice to listen to. Well written, well performed, well recorded, just so good. I listened to it twice, five stars.
Favorite Track: O Children
They still suffer from some unearned misery porn, but this is their best album. It hits hard and entertains.
What an absolute banger. I was instantly into this album that begins with almost punky vocals, chaotic rhythms and dissonant guitar riffs. I can hear influences on Tropical Fuck Storm (a favourite) that can't be coincidental. The album mellows out in the second disk into some gentler tracks but still with lyrics that raise eyebrows and a grin. It is a great mix of musical complexity and variety, organised chaos, humour, and lyrics with occasional beauty that doesn't take itself too seriously. An instant favourite for me.
I feel rather indifferent towards Nick Cave (& the Bad Seeds); his (or their) music isn't something I have ever deeply connected with, but it has always existed in an abstract realm of things I appreciate. That being said, this hit all the right buttons today, all 1 hour and 22 minutes of it. Tickled my soul. Very nice.
What an album; emotive, full and energetic 5/5
Maybe my favorite NC&TBS albums! I always liked them but this was the first album that really got me stuck into them (for life)..really love the great piano, nice lyrics, GREAT production,...Oh God, this is definately my favourite NC&TBS album!
Nick Cave in seiner ganzen Vielfalt auf einem Doppelalbum, was will man mehr. Finde zwar andere Alben noch besser aber was solls.
Wonderful!
Literally Nick Cave.
Loads of novelty and weirdness without losing anything from the pop/rock/blues vibe
10/10, better than Wild God
I just love Nick Cave. He's a brooding outrageous man that makes crazy music that evokes a lot of emotion. I particularly love this album because of how versatile it is.
This is two exceptionally good records. The second is a more obvious Nick Cave album, instantly recognizable as such; you can hear echoes of this in his most recent album. The first is a rockier, more blues-led affair. It's another album I should have bought on release.
Lovely double album. Nick Cave has haunting vocals, and the gospel vibes tie this album together. It's long, but fulfilling.
Thats a 9. Incredible, I will revisit and listen to more of nick cave's work
Ridiculously good, fantastic lyrics and variety
Frábær eins og alltaf! Nikki Hellir klikkar aldrei
Ein besta NC platan. Í raun tvær ólíkar plötur, báðar frábærar.
NOW WE'RE COOKING BABY
Get Ready for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
The best!!!!!!!
I never got into Nick Cave for whatever reason, even though he's supposedly adjacent to a lot of musicians I do like. Maybe my head wasn't in the right place. Maybe I thought it was a bit overwrought, directly sighted at Theater Kids and Former Theater Kids. Anyway, this album's pretty good! A little long, but I can respect the craft, and you know what, I'm gonna listen to it more than a couple of times. Maybe it even makes it into The Rotation. Good to put on and zone out and good to listen in. No skips! Tunes that get stuck in your head! Somber, erudite songwriting that isn't the southern gothic character exploration that turned me off the first time! Maybe I am a Nick Cave fan, I'll have to revisit some other stuff. This album hits.
Love Nick Cave.
4.5 First time listening to a Nick Cave album! Surprisingly good a for a double album I'd never heard before, I'm pretty sure a couple more listens will turn it into a solid 5⭐ Edit: I've listened to this at least 20 times now whaddahell, Nick Cave ya old bastard, ya got me
This album is amazing. Much more upbeat than traditional Nick Cave fare. I really like the addition of a choir on certain songs. This is hands down one of Nick Cave's best. Favourite songs: The Lyre of Orpheus, Get Ready for Love, Nature Boy, "There She Goes, My Beautiful World", Hiding All Away, Easy Money, Breathless, "Babe, You Turn Me On", Let The Bells Ring, Carry Me, O Children Least favourite songs: Fable of the Brown Ape 5/5
Superb
Well, this landed at the perfect time, as I saw Nick Cave live last week on the Wild Gods tour, and I'm still floating. After being a bit "challenged" by the Birthday Party as a teenager, I didn't explore much of the Bad Seeds until quite recently. An absolute treasure-trove, which I hope to explore for years to come. I'm guessing this one counts as a relatively upbeat album; I already knew Nature Boy, and was surprised quite a lot is in a similar vein. Anyway, I thought it was brilliant, bar a few challenging moments. Humour, darkness, melody, and he's just cool as, isn't he? I love him, and I loved this.
Love the music - one of there best albums
I'm a little biased since I saw him live a couple weeks ago and he was amazing, but this is incredibly strong for being later in his career. I hope people didn't switch off towards the end and missed the brilliant closer that is 'O Children'.
Excellent album
A personal favourite of mine
Words cannot express how much I adored this album.
I’ve been having some bad days lately but this was much needed. Life can be terrifying and miserable, but it’s so much cooler than being dead. ‘There She Goes’ is the standout from the first half. ‘Breathless’ was good on the second part.
<Gordon Ramsay voice> Finally, some good fucking music. Nick Cave is cool as hell, and regrettably I only know random songs here and there, so listening to this full album was a treat. I love music that has this kind of energy to it. Moody but assertive. I found this a very captivating record both musically and lyrically. The songs felt distinct, exploring different genres and tempos and themes, yet it made sense that they were grouped together into an album. Again, I just love stuff like this. I already knew (and love) "There She Goes, My Beautiful World," but man that song ripsssss. Other favorites: Get Ready for Love, Nature Boy, Abattoir Blues, The Lyre of Orpheus, and Breathless.
Great album from a great artist
Yes
As with all Nick Cave I was a late adopter but this is a towering album with some magnificent songs.
Abattoir Blues: This shit bangs, I did not expect to be drawing this many Strokes and David Byrne parallels. Lyre of Orpheus: Okay, this is more what I expected from Nick Cave, but in a David-Byrne-doing-Night-Vale-weather way? So hey, turns out this shit also bangs.
Never even heard of them before and I really enjoyed this one!!
I loved this album and didn’t feel like it was nearly as long as it was. I love the vibes. Easy five star for me.
hardly need to listen to this one ... but I did anyway. It's one of Nick's finest albums, and chock full of excellence. Nature Boy might be my favourite NC track ever, but both the up-beat and down-beat tracks are well worth a listen. Five Stars every day of the week.
This my third Nick Cave record on this list and I didn't really like the other two. So I wasnt expecting much. But this is fantastic. Nick's voice is brilliant and clear, I really love it.
Probably a 4. It runs a bit long. It's Nick Cave so it gets that 5 star treatment.
an old friend...been years since i revisited the nick cave discog so i cant fully place this in its proper context outside of my memories, but esp listening chronologically its hard to forget the bolt of energy and color this is. nick cave strikes me at least in part as an alternate history where bob dylan rose out of literary tradition instead of folk tradition, and with a consistently greater interest in arrangement...or at least a consistent band that has such, the bad seeds kick all kinds of ass on here, draining so much energy out of u thru the course of disc 1 that disc 2 hits even harder as a big pool of balm. would love to do a big nick cave revisit at some point, and this may remain my favorite album of his...full of surreal emotive beauty, and the perfect meeting point between spiritualism and Flesh And Blood. lowkey a record about Dance in that way...or at least physical ritual of some kind!!! comfy cult vibes off the charts
Fantastic album. I really love it.
I’ve loved Nick Cave forever, but I’ve honestly never really sat down and listen to one of his albums. I’ve been to a couple of his shows, which which blew my mind. Listening to this, I was just overwhelmed with emotion and feelings that I felt in those shows that I’ve been to. THis album definitely will be in the heavy rotation over the next few months.
Epic
...cannonballs
I kept being told to listen to Nick Cave! I see why! I mega-enjoyed this and will be back to hear more!
Magnum opus. Massive and perfect. How has this been off my radar?
Really enjoyed it for a first time listen
5 - Thinking of the fact that Nick Cave came out of the depravity of Birthday Party really adds a lot of context to how I've come to listen to him. This album just had so much in it and I was sad when it was over. I think this is gonna cause a deep dive into all his music, just an amazing timeless album.
Another wonderful album by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, a double-album in this case, and certainly the one of their best full-length releases during the noughts (with 2001's *No More Shall We Part*). Following the huge letdown that *Nocturama* had been, this one was a huge relief for Cave's fans. Recorded after the departure of long-time member Blixa Bargeld, *Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus* is also the project that saw The Dirty Three's Warren Ellis take over as Nick's main creative accomplice. Already an official member of The Bad Seeds for a few years at this point, Ellis probably had an large influence on a few compositions, whether they were officially co-written with him or not, and he surely helped Cave reach another step of his extraordinary musical journey, which started here, with this exact album. Gospel-like background vocals, guitars that sound "electric" in every sense of the word, and possessed imprecations from the dark crooner with a booming voice that Cave is abound in this record. As noted by other reviewers, *Abattoir Blues* is (generally speaking) rockier and livelier than its companion piece *The Lyre Of Orpheus*, mostly comprising moodier and slower cuts. Standout tracks include the martial and delirious "Hiding All Away" and the catchy midtempo pop-rock songs "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" and "Nature Boy". There's also the laid-back groove of "Abattoir Blues"--already very much in the vein of later masterpiece *Push The Sky Away*--, the Dr. John-like "The Lyre Of Orpheus"--a brooding, swampy cut where Greek myths sound haunted by the ghosts of bluesmen from the Mississippi delta--, the flute-laden, mostly acoustic, generous and optimistic-sounding "Breathless"--whose sweet, memorable chorus will surely bring a smile to the face of many listeners--, the mysterious and subtle "Easy Money" and "Spell", or the twirling and agitated "Supernaturally"--also graced by an exciting chorus going "Hey! Ho!" like the best grassroots folk-rock bangers of days yonder (not to mention that intoxicating fiddle!), here proving that the second disc has its share of lively moments as well. To conclude on this list of highlights, one needs to mention the wealth of epic, heartrending, elegiac ballads on this one--ballads such as "Let The Bell Rings", "Carry Me" and iconic closer "O Children", where the Bad Seeds excel at creating sweeping soundscapes carrying Cave to new heights. Reading back on what I've just written, I realize I must have mentioned close to the two thirds of the tracklist, which was not my intention at first. Yet I could have mentioned even *more* songs, that's how good this album is! If really I had to find a "dud" in it, I might say that "Baby, You Turn Me On" in the second tracklist sounds a bit indistinct and mundane. But does it really matter with so many gems before and after it? My only (initial) major gripe when I first listened to this project was that I thought the rock number serving as the opener of its first disc, "Get Ready For Love", sounded a bit heavy-handed in such a prominent position. But oddly enough, I don't think any other track could have taken its place, as great as they are (most of them take their sweet time to "build up" their assets, so to speak, which is not so ideal to get things started). So now I'm fine with the way the record begins, I guess. This is just to say: please don't judge the album on the merits of that first song alone. Nick Cave is of course a hell of a performer and lyrics writer, his scope has rarely been broader than the one in this record, and consequently, this here easily reaches the level of his "classics" from the eighties and nineties. So it would be sad if you missed all of it just because of one song. This review was written in mid-August 2024, and at the end of the month Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds will release their new album *Wild God*, the follow-up to Cave's far more subdued and darkly meditative trilogy" *Push The Sky Away*, *Skeleton Tree* and *Ghosteen*, (some of whom should definitely be selected for a list such as this one). The singles from *Wild God* released up to now suggest that Cave will here return to the livelier and soulful rock vein of *Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus*, after spending two studio albums (and other side-projects, live or not) mourning the tragic loss of his son through his art. Not sure he will be able to pull off a *rock* album as good as the one I had to review today--a throwback that sure will sound difficult to accomplish after spending so many years exploring that very different, emotionally intense turf. But Cave's been a creative force to reckon with for decades now, so everything is possible... 4.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 5. 9.5/10 for more general purposes (5+4.5) Number of albums left to review: 101 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 388 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 226 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 285

YES, I see it now.
My first introduction to Nick Cave! I've wanted to get into his stuff for a while now, and boy have I been missing out. I've listened 3 times now, I'm just in awe. On my first listen, I preferred the more mellow The Lyre of Orpheus side, but the second time I enjoyed the Abattoir Blues side more. The gospel choir is incredible. On the third listen, I really took the time to read through the lyrics. There She Goes, My Beautiful World is such a beautiful song about the creative process. Let the Bells Ring is a lovely tribute to Johnny Cash. And Nature Boy is so romantic. Ahh, I can't even choose a favorite, they're all so good. My favorite artists are usually songwriters - lyrics really take an album from good to great for me - so I was expecting I'd like Nick Cave, but I wasn't prepared to be so moved. I can't wait to dive into more of Nick / The Bad Seeds.
Nick Cave is always full-on in a way that doesn't always resonate with me, but this double album is one hell of an achievement. Definitely will listen again.
I've heard of this artist for years and glad that this project got me to finally listen to him. I can get a Neil Diamond vibe on some songs. Other songs remind me more of Tom Waits or Talking Heads. He's all over the place but it's always his unique sound. I don't know that any of the songs are super catchy but they all pull me in with their melodies and unique sound. Makes me want to listen to it again. Dig it!
Wow! Just wow! Everything I’ve heard from Nick Cave couldn’t have prepared me for this album. It’s almost surreal how much I instantly fell for this. His impeccable songwriting, those background female vocalists, the topic at hand…all extremely well done. My ONLY gripe is that it’s too long, but that can be said for any double album. It doesn’t take away from the overall greatness of what’s being offered. Big huge highlight is the song Breathless. It is an instantly perfect favorite. I will be diving deeper into this record.
It took me until disc 2 to realize he totally reminds me of Neil Diamond, not only in singing style/voice, but Neil also has some super weird songs mixed with more classic Neil jams. It’s almost like a variety show with the range of different tracks. Really enjoyed the backup vocals when they’re present. This grew on me a lot. Kinda love it.
This is the album that got me into Nick Cave. It is a perfect album in my opinion. I think I got it because of it's use of "O Children" in Harry Potter but it has so much more going for it. "There She Goes, My Beautiful World" is this gospel epic. "Hiding All Away" is the grimey, tom waits esque rock banger. "Carry Me" is soul lifting. It may be the ultimate experimental gospel rock epic with such a charismatic frontman and distinctive voice.
This one surprised me. The only Nick Cave I have heard previously was Ghosteen which I had generated near the beginning of the challenge. I expected this to be similarly somber. Boy was I wrong. The whole first disc absolutely slaps you in the face with its layered vocals and dense instrumentals. The Lyre of Orpheus disc is more subdued, but builds with each consecutive song. I think I prefer the Abattoir Blues side, but adored all of this. He knows his vocal range and takes advantage of his limitations. This sounds both old and new.
I finally get the whole nick cave thing 4.7
Astounding - no other word for it
Cool vibe and great instrumentation but whether you will like this or not will 100% depend on how you like Nick Cave's vocal delivery. Very unique but very fitting of the music in my opinion I really like it.
Long time fav album from Nick. Still stands up. Get Ready For Love slaps H A R D.
Do not make a sound
Perfect. It's hard to go wrong with Nick Cave
This is exactly the kind of music I am hoping to be exposed to on this list. I had heard of Nick Cave before but never listened to him before or looked into his catalog. I gave this album several spins and enjoyed it thoroughly. I will be exploring the rest of his catalog and adding this album to my favorites.
The Lyre of Orpheus er oftere mere klassisk 90er Cave.
One of my all timers
I love this era of Nick
Awesome album
it's a tiring and hot Monday and all I've heard of Nick Cave is Red Right Hand. I wasn't enthusiastic for a whole album of that (I like the song, but it takes the right mindset, long and creepy as it is). But this whole thing was wonderful, interesting songs back to back, and surprised me from the first note of Get Ready For Love. And I did - get ready, and fall in love. Slightly reminds me of something my dad might play in the car, in the best possible way. Vampire-y and joyfully so. I'm just genuinely suprised by how much I like this one Oh and the 'wow I know this one' moment came right at the end! A first for that I think
Nick Cave you bad boy
In the last ten years of music I've ingested, Nick Cave has been among the most consistently rewarding and interesting to listen to.
Amazing energy! Raise above is an awesome song.
It’s the Harry Potter song!
Another essential pending..., that has hunted me from minute 0! 😍😍😍
How did I miss this in 2004? Not my thing usually, but Nick Cave sounds and feels like a mix between Frank Zappa, Funk, and Lounge Singer. The most fun I have had listening to an unheard album in a long time.
4.6 If I drink 10 beers and listen to this I would rate it 6000 out of 5. Nothing like having a few and cranking Nick Cave. This album is probably the genesis of the Grinderman spin-off (which I think is awesome). Fingers crossed we get a few more NC&BS albums.
NICK! I hadn't heard this one. Love that full backing. Already loved Nick but this is is how I like my Nick now. 5!
Fantastic. Reminds me of the importance of listening to an album in order (instead of randomized or a track at at time).
I like Nick Cave. He can be dark, but he's had stuff to deal with. Even if he didn't have stuff, there's nothing wrong with looking at some of the dark stuff. He's all good for me and this might be one of my favored Nick Cave albums. Be sure to check out There She Goes My Beautiful World.
The dark themes continue in this Double-album presentation, but this is easily the most accessible of the Nick Cave albums I've listened to. Sublime music that ranges from very dark to uplifting, but the dark lyrics throughout can almost seem dissonant and have a greater impact. All the songs are literally good, but among the faves of each album: Abbatoir Blues: There She Goes, My Beautiful World Nature Boy Let the Bells Ring Lyre of Orpheus: Breathless Babe, You Turn Me On Carry Me O Children
I’ve only tangentially known about Nick Cave and now I need to listen to his whole discography. I loved this! Moody, poetic, and musically dense. Can’t wait to listen again. 5/5
I’ve known that Nick Cave is someone I should probably listen to. One of my best friends is a huge fan, but this is the first time it’s actually clicked. The other stuff of his that I’ve listened to has been good, to be sure. But this is absolutely brilliant.
Super interesting and diverse. Adding to my listen-again list.
Love Nick Cave!
Nick Cave.
Was dreading about listening to 17 songs but the time flew by since all the songs were really good. I preferred the second part of the double album more but still enjoyed all of it. Might even listen to this album in the future. 9/10
Got a singer for a vegas casino vibes at first but then his voice grew on me. I like how he pronounces words funny. Pretty solid background instrumentals that really elevate his singing that on its own I don’t think it would have as much of an impact. Really dig the songs with the backup singers creating gospel ballads. Songs are a bit long and I wonder if the album would be more accessible if it wasn’t a double album. “Breathless” is a fantastic banger. Overall a pretty surprising album that I really enjoyed. 9/10
I have a tendency to like dense, referential songwriters. I also have a tendency to not like artists who work primarily in overly ambitious epics. Nick Cave is a dense, referential songwriter, and in spite of Ghosteen (which we'll get to) I think this is Nick Cave's biggest epic. It's Spiritualized exaggerated to their logical endpoint...but with more debauchery and more flute parts. Fuck it, it's a 5.
Did not disappoint. Been a fan for only about 15 years or so. Wish I had got on board before. Album started with my kinda banger. Closer is one that will continue to grow on me. And everything in between, Mr. Cage & Seeds put on a good show. Love his voice. And he’s one of the good guys.
Poetic visions take you for a ride. I like the dynamics of the songs. Emotional and punchy. I dug it
Not even my favorite Nick Cave album and it’s still a 5 star album.
fundamental to my development
A Nick Cave fan, so this gets five stars.
Very nice to listen to.
Every Song was a gem! I love Alternative music!
Wait, so Nick Cave can sing?!?!? What a journey. Amazing. A primeira parte do álbum, Abattoir Blues, é simplesmente sensacional. As letras, as melodias, os instrumentos, as interpretações. HE TOOK ME THERE. He ate and left no crumbs, as the youth says!!! Quero ouvir mais. The Lyre of Orpheus - mais delicado e sutil. É bastante gostoso. Infelizmente não prestei muita atenção nas letras. Mas deu para perceber que he's a man in love em algumas!! Não queria que acabasse...
This was actually excellent. Lots of bangers. Loved the vocals, loved the music. One of the not-many albums that are 5/5 on first listen
Ah yes. Uniquely gifted and prolific storyteller, our Nick. I have developed quite a taste for his music and enjoyed this album, which I remember listening to on my first and only ipod on a plane, sitting next to a NZ radio DJ who was on his way to interview him, who explained it all to me, while we debated the tracks and his new blues style - playing with standards and making his own... He is not for everyone - even small doses can feel harmful if you’re new to it, or not ready. Set and setting. But if you can take the intensity, the singular soaring ride he takes you on can be very unexpected, roaring and blistering at times, then tender, mystic or calming, depending on the album. The talent - well his theatrical, dramatic style and full, perfectionistic chaos and firm command is always there. Scarily. This album is more or less core Nick cave - big gospel gothic rocky with touches of more reflective tender elegance on the 2nd disc. He keeps improving and producing. Are his very best tracks here? Debatable - he has many ‘great’ songs and enduring anthems and few of them are here.... But it does give a good sampler of his stylist core range, if there is a thing. We all need it sometimes. The perfect song from Nick Cave to suit the moment. To propel, to sooth, or reflect, to laugh. Or look on in horror. So, welcome to the darkly inventive, always varying and evolving themes (not to mention entertaining and often highly erudite and literate) lyrics from that intense brooding baritone voice of Nick Cave. As per the album title, he alludes to and uses myths legends and uses his own (and others) poetry a lot - the Lyre of Orpheus is a song referring (and borrowing heavily) from a Ted Hughes epic myth poem in “Crow: from the life and songs of the Crow” (1972) - the collection includes Song for a Phallus, Oedipus Crow, Crow and Mama, Crow Sickened which in turn, borrow from, and refer to Seneca's depiction of Oedipus. Yes, Nick reads widely. And his long and wiry grasp goes very wide indeed. (hang in there I am riffing) .... wide... and intriguing. Like my first memory of on enthralling exposure to Nick Cave was his stage performance of “From Here to Eternity” in the Wim Wenders film, “WIngs of Desire” . In which, hsi story Words resonant baritone voice that perfectly complements his darkly poetic lyrics and brooding stage presence in a smoky Berlin night club. And there is a comedic ‘grand guignol’ never far aware. Is he doing cabaret with edge, is it a love song, or is he sharing gothic terror with a half grimace /half smile? We’re left to guess. Thai is art, and entertainment that challenges. He is now more than iconic. He is a kind of weird, wise advisor and commentator on life and the human condition (more so in the Red Right Hand files online forum where he writes letters and responses to questions, drawing on his studied and admirably eloquent wisdom from, it seems, his own psychoanalysis, learnings, and incredible capacity to read and reflect). There is good humour and soothing glory as we bathe in “babe your turn me on” and comfort in “O Children” . And after listening closely to him, it may help to go for a walk.
In my opinion the best Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album. It's a complete tour de-force. I don't think there's a bad song on it. The two 'sides' or 'acts' of the album are very well done with the first being all angry and aggressive and the second much softer. O Children is one of my top favourite songs ever and There She Goes My Beautiful World is up there with the best Nick Cave songs.
Oh shit! I LOVE how this album is starting. This is the feeling I've been waiting for. The harder guitar and the lyrics I'm already enjoying. This might be one of my favorite rock albums we've reviewed so far. The mixing of this album is impeccable. I must know who it is. This is one of my favorite rock albums we've reviewed. I'm adding it to my list.
Great record
The best Nick Cave album!!! O Children has been one of my fav songs for years.
wow. what an album!
This was the first Nick Cave album that I ever listened to and I think it’s a great place to start. It’s not as hard edged as his earlier stuff, but still has great intensity and really varied moods. There She Goes, My Beautiful Works and Supernaturally are two all time favorite songs of mine. There are only a few songwriters who can create their own worlds in each song and Nick Cave is up there with the best storytellers in rock. Incredible album.
The slippery slope of having Harry Potter read to me at age 4 to becoming a Nick Cave fan at 27 is very real & dangerous. Heed my warning (the song "O Children" is featured in the moving picture Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Pt. I [2010]) Surprised myself at how I enjoyed this a fair bit more than Murder Ballads, the more eclectic of the two (three?). I guess when you have a winning cocktail of blues, gospel, rock & folk, with some theatre and horror added for good measure, I’ll take a whole double album of it. HL: "Get Ready for Love", "Nature Boy", "There She Goes, My Beautiful World", “Supernaturally”, “Breathless”, “Carry Me”/"O Children" December 31, 2023. That was 2023, eh? Hm
