Hips and hops
3/10
Meh. Actor acting like a rapper.
Average score: 2.6/5 (rounding down, rating excludes most of the filler tracks) i have put this one off for several weeks for a couple reasons: 1. this is a whopping 24 tracks long (70+ minutes) 2. it's fucking Ice-T. at this point, i just wanted get this over with so i can proceed with this album list. as expected, it's super dated and corny hip-hop about how big bad and tough Ice-T supposedly is. i don't doubt this might've done numbers back in thr 90s, but it doesn't age well at all for first-time listeners today Midnight was alright i guess. i'm a sucker for a Black Sabbath sample
Ice T was not great at rapping but he might want to go back after War of the Worlds
I was able to get through my commute listening to this, I may finish the album (I got through about half of it) but still not a genre I'm going to listen to on my own.
A stylistic classic, but … eh?
I war thinking that I was listening Vanilla Ice and I was waiting for 'Alright stop, collaborate and listen'
- Old School Hip Hop ist einfach nicht mein Genre - Habe nicht das ganze Album gehört Topsong: Mind over Matter
I'm no early 90's gangsta rap expert, but OG sounds pretty un-OG and derivative. Some decent beats - pretty sure Dj Shadow sampled Midnight for Midnight in a Perfect World, which is neat. ...wait, is that actually the intro to When the Levee Breaks? Anyway, T's OG music gives me the same meh as Body Count, his rock/metal band. Superfluous and unnecessary. I'll keep my ice cubed.
This album is a wild ride. The beats, the lyrics, the full thing is all dripping in 90s. There is an inverse relationship between the number of times you tell me you're tough and the amount I believe it. I'm starting to wonder if I just hate music? I might. Maybe it's women this project is teaching me to hate? Not sure. I'll get back to you.
In the gangster rap musical system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the rappers, who make music about crime; and the reviewers, who aggregate the offenders. These are their stories. In the gangsta rap musical system, the career are represented by two separate yet equally important phases: the street, who make music about being gangster; and the couch, who act in easy to watch movies and TV shows. These are there stories. DUN DUN
Ice-T has flow. But I hardlz can remember anything. As usual the lyrics are getting boring. It's alwayse the same. One listen ist enough for me.
I don’t think I can name a single song by Ice-T. Come to think of it, I think the only thing I know about his entertainment career is that he’s on Law and Order SVU. I have no idea what to expect from this album, but I’m excited to see what’s in store. I wasn’t really wowed by Original Gangster. This album had a few tracks that I thought were really good, but most of it was bland and boring. I didn’t find Ice-T’s rapping to be that great, and I didn’t think the production work or beats were anything to write home about either. At just over an hour and ten minutes long, OG was a chore to get through for me, and I felt like it was an incredibly uneven experience. I just wanted this album to be punchier and have more edge to it, but few things here really hit the way that I wanted them to. “New Jack Hustler” was the first track that I came across that I didn’t fully hate. The rapping wasn’t very good in my opinion, but at least the beats were okay. “Bitches 2” was much better though, and I really enjoyed the raw lyrics and the storytelling. “Straight Up N****” was my favorite song on the album. The lyrics were excellent, the message was outstanding, and the rapping was really good too. Everything really came together on this song. When it comes to wanting more, I really wished that “The House” had been fleshed out in to a full song. It felt like Ice-T had a lot to say on the issue of child abuse, and it would have been really great if this song had been expanded upon. “Midnight” was good too, and I enjoyed how it sounded like horror core. The sense of dread and unease I felt while listening to it was really tangible. “The Tower” was good too. I enjoyed its more straightforward horror core sound with the sampling of the Halloween theme, but the tone of Ice-T’s voice and the lyrics helped craft the atmosphere too. “Body Count” was my second favorite song on the album. I loved the hardcore punk sound, and the lyrics and songwriting were great too. Even though there were a few songs that I enjoyed on OG, the overall experience was pretty lackluster for me, and it felt like this album went on for twice its actual run time.
Some beats were kinda nice, but it’s not my genre and it didn’t hit me
I saw him live recently, and the dude still misogynistic, homophobic af Rap is not really my genre, this was ok. Enjoyed the body count half more. 2*
oof
Didn't do a ton for me and was too long
Just not hitting. A good drink though.
rap a little bit flat and boring.. old school
Not a rap fan. Some of the music sounded decent but many of the lyrics are terrible.
The rapping doesn’t measure up to his contemporaries and seems really OG like Run DMC. The album is mostly notable because the extreme content.
Doesn’t speak to me
I like the rock/metal parts, but his rapping isn't really doing much for me..
2- Stars (4/15)
I really don't know how to rate this - diverting, not nearly as aggressive or unpleasant lyrically as some others of a similar style, although he does play up the gangster element. Now an actor, I do get him confused with Ice Cube. There is a definite resemblance. Utterly fine, didn't mind the beats, but won't be back.
Didn’t age well, 90s gangster rap.
Yes! No. Very dated sonically and lyrically. A few good tracks but overall, outstays it's welcome.
Ice details the problems he sees in his world but doesn’t really try to offer any solutions. I appreciate that at least he varies up the tempo and tries some unconventional things musically, particularly with the rock edge he brings to some songs. And he has conviction even with his more controversial songs. Too many filler tracks without rapping drag the set down however. I love being able to see connections with some of the earlier albums I’ve heard, such as when I noticed the Black Sabbath sample on Midnight.
not for me
Can’t take myself seriously listening to this
L.A HOME OF THE BODY BAG I had a good time listening to this but I can't say it's the best rap I've heard.
Better than a lot of rap I've listened to.
A bit dull. A rap album. Some track he just raps without any beats, and it just feels a bit dry. Plus it’s a bit too long.
Did Ice T create the phrase Original Gangster? I think Ice T has a pretty good flow and his rapping is pretty good, but every song started to sound the same. None of the beats were fun to listen to. I think his acapella tracks were the best ones. This album is also way too long. Shout out to "Body Count"! A rock and roll track with Ice T vocals in the middle of a rap album works really well. I think it's a highlight of the album, but only because it's surrounded by so much repetitiveness.
nooh
Man, another wunnadeez. Ice-T is a name that vaguely rings a bell, though I think he's more of a commercial act than a critical act. I’m curious to know what I’m getting into with this album. Hmm. About what I was expecting. This album is a good representation of gangsta rap from the time, and it holds my attention more than some of the other acts on this list. If anything, the extreme controversy of gangsta rap makes it a notable footnote worthy of immortalisation on this list, but I dunno. I don't think there's any artistic merit to this genre, definitely none which is worthy of making it onto a best-of all-time list. Man, if this album ain’t LONG, a length that isn’t at all justified. While I was bored out of my mind listening to most of these songs, there’s some alright tracks in here. “Straight Up Nigga” is funny. “Midnight” is alright. The instrumental is cool and I like the chorus. “Body Count” is shit, but it’s funny hearing a hip-hop skit being used to shamelessly shill another album. “The Tower” is cool. I like the moody, menacing tracks the most, evidently. Gonna check the book entry for this one. “...a chilling masterpiece that ruthlessly illustrates the complex forces at play within a forgotten American black underclass”. Yeah, okay. Dare I say it, but I think Blacks are just as responsible for their problems as Whites. Besides, what complex forces are at play on this album aside from “fuck Whitey”, “I ♥ smashing box” and “I ♥ crime”. Gonna snub this one, obviously. In place of this album, I humbly submit Stereotype A by Cibo Matto for inclusion on the list.
New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme) O.G. Original Gangster
Meh, generally quite boring. Was probably incredibly influential over the past 35 years. I liked the rock song.
This is #day346 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… unfortunately, despite coming from the golden age of hip-hop, which I enjoy now and then, this one falls flat for me. Right off the bat, the air-raid siren on "Home of the Bodybag" made me freeze. After almost four years of hearing that awful sound non-stop, especially in the dead of night, due to russia's constant terrorist attacks, it's just fucking dreadful. Beyond that, the album didn't grab me. The tracks tend to blend, and the whole affair leaves me indifferent. I'm sorry. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day347.
So going into this I had really gotten into the first track. It’s just an interlude it’s not really like a traditional song. But I genuinely really liked it and but that set the bar way too high. I didn’t like any song on the album as much as I liked the silly first song. So that’s not great. I didn’t hate it necessarily but I was not enjoying the album honestly. I didn’t get anything out of this album. It’s one of the only times I was actively checking the track list to see when it would be over.
So you mean to tell me that the man who spouted boring tuff-man rhymes two years after NWA had already blown him off the map, went on to years of sparkling mediocrity on a Dick Wolf procedural? Huh.
I understand the cultural history of this album but most of it was a bit heavy for me. Favourite tracks - Fly By - Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous - Body Count Pulse of rhyme narrative has Eminem story telling vibes about it
Not really my cup of T 😉 … but didn’t hate it.
I try to enjoy rap but I just can’t get the appeal. At some point I will have to accept that.
You know Benson, some people listen to some real twisted shit these days.
Same as the rest.
Pesadilla sonora (sin letras no)
Tiresome and without lasting power. Simplistic, boring lyrics, and same ol' boom bap beat style without a speck of innovation. Just so everyone knows, in case Ice-T didn't REALLY hammer this message home, he's a tough guy who gets ladies. ⭐⭐
That’s me on track 2
This okay. Not the biggest fan of gangsta rap so it wasn’t really for me
Not for me.
2 out of 5. Body Count was the highlight for me.
Started off feelin' the vibes but over the course of the album lost a little momentum... Not enough "jazz"
No i skończyła się moja dobra passa. 4.5/10
Very formative in the gangster rap genre but his flow is not something I like. There are some hits but nothing I would listen to solo.
Long braggadocious slog. I was not aware how much of an impact Ice-t had. 2 stars for me, T.
Interesting album and lots of strong points but it seems like this guy only knows how to insult people using female characteristics
I don't like rap!!!!!!
The beats are ok but there is too much swearing going on and it is a way too long album. I like some rap albums (not too many, I admit) but this wasn't one I would go back to and listen again.
Ticks all the Gangsta boxes. 1 unimaginative and overly sweary. 2 Skits 3 Way too long
Ok, this genre just isn’t for me. Not interested in hearing about bitches and pussy and booty and all of that nonsense. The only two bits that stood out for me were Body Count and the posh bird’s testimonial. And why always so long? My god they are so self indulgent in this genre. Literally in love with the sound of their own voices. Next
'90s rap is definitely not my favorite genre, but something about this was particularly tough for me. Maybe it's the hard content, maybe it's the fact that it's 72 minutes long for some reason, maybe it's that Ice T is a network TV actor now and I can't get that out of my head. I don't know exactly, but this just did not do very much for me. Very meh. Favorite song: New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme) Other: First Impression, Bitches 2, O.G. Original Gangster, Fried Chicken, Body Count, Pulse of the Rhyme 3/27/25
Sounds a bit tired now
Yo
Laughable.
Golden age of the CD era + the golden age of rap and hip hop = the bane of my existence. I already don't care for gangsta rap, and 72 minutes of it doesn't help.
meh
I FUCKED HER
I wanted to like this, but it aged poorly and I couldn't get into it. Sorry, Ice T.
This was quite long, but it was somewhat entertaining.
Production was incredible
2/5
As gangsta rap goes, it’s pretty good. But when I think of all the wrong that was and is motivated by this genre, I feel a sense of hopelessness for society. Certainly no empathy. You reap what you sow.
2.5
Meh.
Disclaimer: I am normally not a huge fan of 90s rap, but I think this album has moments for sure. It's not my favorite rap album, but it's fine. Sampling the "Halloween" theme for "The Tower" was a twist I didn't see coming and "Body Count" was quite the surprise haha Liked Songs: "New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme)" , "O.G. Original Gangster" , "Fly By" , "Body Count", "Pulse of the Rhyme"
liked songs: Home of the Bodybag made me think I would hate this album. First Impression made me think I would actually love it. It's more something in between. The good things: The samples throughout are well utilized. Most of the intermission tracks are actually pretty funny. I appreciate the risk of putting a Black Sabbath worship song on an otherwise completely rap album with Body Count. The bad things: Why is so much older rap/hip-hop about making an album? We get it, I know you made an album because I'm listening to it right now. It's not a bad rap album. I probably won't come back to it, but it was worth the listen. 2.5
yeah, not a big fan, it is interesting that he plays a cop on TV. I guess everyone is just acting...
Just too much of this on this list. Ugh.
I don't like thir type of music
90s Gangsta rap is not really my jam at all. Some of these songs an skits were too ridiculous to take seriously
не
I wasn’t really a fan of his flow/delivery and the beats were nothing special.
I cant believe detective Tutuola made this album.
It was fine. I did notice a nice inclusion of brass instruments.
Looking at the track listings and awful titles of the songs this is going to be a very hard listen. Favourite song: Least favourite: Album artwork: I wont be hanging this one up at home.
Decent old school album. I think I would have probably rated it lower if I didn't already have an appreciation of old school hip hop. A couple standouts, not because they are better than the rest, but because they are very different than the rest of the tracks: Midnight. This one has an oddly 'ahead of its time' beat. Body Count. A metal track lol
Really really bad. I am proud of what hip hop has become, but man, going back to these old gangsta rap albums is rough.
The beats are pretty run of the mill for the times and the flows are alright. I'm not a hip-hop guy at all, so this album isn't very appealing to me. I can't even tell if this is an essential release or not, it just sound like every other rap album of the era. Key tracks: Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous
truly OG, but also from a time gone by
Too god damn long, but there are a few good songs like "Midnight"
Managed about 1/3 of the way through. Suffered from the classic shite that all 90s rap albums seemed to have to include: - pointless small skits (to put "first impression" as track 2 is honestly mindboggling stuff) - unnecessary introductions at the beginning of numerous tracks (Mind over matter etc.) - general mysoginy, offensive for shock factor etc. The only thing saving it from 1* is I had Ice cubes debut last week so at least there's some perspective. 1.5*
Not totally sure why this is on the list, maybe the mix of rock with the Body Count introduction. Overall this sounds like your average 1991 gangster rap album. Competent enough but there are better lyrics, lyricism, and production on similar albums of that era (Ice Cube comes to mind). I liked the beat on “midnight”. 2.5
2.4 OG was a banger. Some of the lyrics and skits feel like a parody, 30+ years after it was released. Body Count is dope
Terrible album
Sorry - not my taste
New jacket hustler er da ret cool.
Like most gangsta rap, this could be a great instrumental album.
Liked Body Count & Black Sabbath's sample
It’s better than I thought it would be, but I thought it would be terrible. It is within the range of rap/hip hop that I like, but I like it when the artist rhymes at a real high level - Ice-T could be better
OK so I'm not qualified. Most rap I've heard does not qualify a s music in my book. Its interesting at times as a spoken word storytelling as an extension of the oral tradition. This album, being early in the rap/hip hop genre, seems toned down in a lot of what was to come. The "look at me , I'm biggest badass in the hood" tracks are there. The storytelling of encounters and drug deals etc is there. The raps that are visual and feel like a tour tour in a car through the hood are there. But its all subdued compared with other albums and artists that came later. I guess this is important for pointing the way but I'm not sure if even fans of the genre find this album compelling still. 1.6
This is kinda boring. 2/5
I tend to sigh when rap albums make their way onto my list cause I just struggle to find it enjoyable and something I can happily listen to. This wasn’t the worst but I just don’t think I can rate it beyond 2 😬
I get the significance of this album. not my cup o tea...
5,5/10 Highlights: Midnight M.V.P.s
Not really my thing De OG West Coast hiphop sound klinkt altijd wel iconisch. "Ice-T in the motherfucking house, you know what I am saying" 5/10 Highlights Mind over Matter
I’ll be honest, I did not have high hopes when I saw the name Ice-T. Because for someone who is proclaimed as “one of the original gangster rappers”, I rarely hear his name brought up in the conversation of this era of that genre. Not nearly as much as people like Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, or even 50 Cent. And you know why I think that is? Probably because he is known better for his acting career than the actual music he put out. And after hearing this, I can understand why that is the unfortunate truth. Here’s my issue with this. When you have a song like First Impression, that talks about how you are “the epitome of antidisestablishmentarianism” and “embody the entire spectrum of the urban experience and struggle”, I would hope that those things would be communicated through the music. It’s clear you are trying to make those aspects of yourself known to the listener. Now I’m sure that statement is mostly hyperbole, but there is a part of me that believes he fully meant it. And that bothers me, because I felt none of that during the listening experience. This feels like gangster rap for those who have never ventured out far enough to find anything better. You don’t have to go very far. If we are speaking about strictly conscious political based hip-hop, Fear of a Black Planet literally came out a year earlier. What more could you ask for? Chuck and Flav are infinitely more charismatic and entertaining than Ice-T is. That’s another issue with this. It just does so little to feel unique. The beats are okay. Probably the best and most consistent part. I like the usage of rock and funk samples, but in comparison to what other producers were already beginning to do, it falls flat. The Low End Theory would come out only 4 months after this. Plus The Chronic and The Pharcyde debut would release the next year. The most interesting thing he does on this is Body Count. It caught me so off guard, I kind of just sat with my head in my hands for a second. It’s so fucking ridiculous, it’s almost admirable, but it’s objectively a pretty terrible song. Joining the cast of Law & Order was probably a smart decision on his part. Because it was more career defining, and likely more enjoyable than anything I heard here. Rating: 4/10
Another album that benefits from the fact the first Rap album I heard was Eminem's Slim Shady. I didn't like this all that much but it is night and day better than Eminem. Still just 2 stars or D+ for me.
Double edged sword here. The lyricisim on this album is very good, although I'm not sure, for it's time, that it represents any kind of advanced status. The beats and tracks however did not age well at all, and nothing for nothing, this guy never was ot will be any type of gangstar.
Never actually listened to Ice T before. Interesting to hear this west coast style after recent archetypal examples of east coast rap (GZA, Nas, Public Enemy). My gut reaction is that I think I enjoy West Coast hip hop more than east, as it has more of a catchy fun vibe. the lyrics are simpler and more repeatable which makes them easier to participate in. That being said this album didn't do much for me and I doubt I'll seek it out to play again. It was certainly fine (he had some funny lines and moments) but nothing stood out as needing to hold onto and revere. Def liked the sound and vibe and his delivery. Also: Cube > T >>>>>>>>Vanilla
His flow is fine. His lyricism is slightly above average. The tracks feature some great bass lines, but are pretty average beyond that. I was never the target audience of Gangster Rap. So I'm ignorant when it comes to his historical significance. If he has a legit claim to being the O.G., he'd been passed by, artistically, by this point. Doesn't stand up to Ice Cube's music from 91-92.
Just does nothing for me
I love rap but this album is just lame imo. The skits add nothing. Ice-T's flow is choppy as he annunciates each syllable. The lyrical content adds nothing to rap as a whole. It's just more braggadocio and acting hard. The highlight of the whole album is a guitar section on Body Count as it's really the only thing that stands out.
I think I somehow like Ice-T as an actor better than a rapper.
started off strong but there is only so many tracks about how hard ice t is i can listen to cars money women i shoot people in face bla bla me tough fk police NNN
Thoughts before listening: I know Ice-T but I've never actually listened to one of his albums, and looking over the tracklist I don't recognize any of these songs. I'm sure this will be fine, but probably not really my thing. Review: This is just okay. I can't relate to this at all, and I'm not really into Ice-T's brand of rap. There aren't a lot of pop hooks here and most songs have a similar sound. There is definitely a Public Enemy influence to the music on this album, but PE are much more interesting, especially with their lyrics. Best song on here is "Body Count" which was Ice-T introducing his rock band...and I like him as a metal singer more than a rapper. This is a 2-star album.
So much, anger and violence… I can’t really like it.
The mixing is a little manic on the opening track. He has a great voice but the beats are kind of weak. Mind Over Matter brings something interesting. Just over half way and this just feels over saturated with a repetitive sound. Midnight at least sounds different again and fun having a story, but It's too long. I'm not here for an audio book. M.V.P.s a strange check list of rap. Just put this in the liner notes. The waveforms of most of these tracks just look like a big rectangle. Body Count, okay like a hard-core song. Interesting. There is too much. Pulse of the Rhyme is alright, but he just doesn't feel locked in on the track. The Tower, did John Carpenter get paid? Well a nice anti war message. Overall this was a tedious listen. It did sound better in the car.
Gutted not to be on the list of Certified Players.
fine. I am not a huge rap fan.
there is a vibe but it is not a vibe that i vibe to, i kinda like Mind over Matter though.
Rap not my style
Okee aso de erst song isch chli weird. I ha irgendwie rap erwartet und nöd eifach en beat. Hahahaha first impression isch jo meega funny Okee es goht eifach viel drum wie er krass isch aber finds no funny bis etz. Hald classic old-school rap Okee es isch bitz langwiilig etz. So jo i checks bisch en gangster.
I die harder than Bruce Willis!
Not for me
Early gangster rap is pretty funny. Ice T spells a lot of words out to make rhymes, like "The I, the C, the E, the T," or "M-I-C." And apparently everyone was trying to kill him.
Cutting music
Fínir sprettir ...
I’ve never really enjoyed listening to Ice-T. Maybe it’s Because I just view him as a law and order actor over this gangster rapper but either way this album was good proof why I don’t listen to him. It felt like with all the skits he was justifying why he’s such a good rapper or why he’s so cool. Just seemed silly and for a rap album this was way longer than it needed to be. No thanks water-T. 4.7/10
I don't like alot of ice T's music to me it just feels like discount kendric or even dre kinda dry but I liked the switch up and didint mind the overall bests kinda a 2.5
This is some aight gangster rap - definitely not my thing, I've never been a rap fan. But this definitely isn't bad, some cool ideas spread throughout but nothing that kept me fully engaged. Fav songs: - Body Count - O.G Original Gangster
Bad voice and flow. Eh beats. Only a couple songs that I might consider listening to again. Too long. Too many skits.
Why do rappers love being called Ice so much? Ice Tea, Ice Cube, Vanilla Ice… but off innit? I’m not sure if I’ve heard Ice Tea before. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: OG Original Gangster This review will be a short one because I need to go out. This album was ok. I found it really funny how MVPs kept calling people players, and gave a backhanded compliment to MC Hammer. Don’t think I’ll be returning again, but this was fine.
Razor-sharp and witty in some places; puerile, immature, and absurdly misogynistic in others. Some of it is just talking and it's far too long.
Nigga mothafucka hela tiden.
Just a bit clunky for me.
not my cup of T
Ice T wants you to know he's a hardcore n***a who ain't no sellout b*tch even though he played a cop on a TV show, thinks fighting a war in the middle east is bullshit, but his brand of violence is cool. And he is really proud of his violent lyrics. Too bad because the beats were pretty good here.
2/5 naaaaah
It's... fine. Passable for 90s hip-hop, at least. The skits are actually pretty entertaining, and come close to outshining many of the actual musical tracks - which is a bit of a no-no. There are a few musical highlights, namely the great Mind Over Matter, the raging mood of Fly By, the unexpected metal-rocker Body Count, and the chilling keyboard hooks in The Tower. Unfortunately, the album is brought down severely by its lyrics, which veer all over the place, from misogyny (Bitches 2) to narcissism (Straight Up, among others) to underwhelming sex-talk after stating in the previous track that there would be nothing of the sort (Fly By). The percussion is also generally uninspiring - very standard for 90s rap, having a kind of semi-lo-fi electronic sound that makes the production sound much worse than it should. The rhythms themselves are not interesting. 2/5
The album cover art is truly hot garbage. It's interesting how I really like 2001 by Dr. Dre but have a hard time standing this, even though it's the same genre. I guess it just isn't as good. Weak 2 for me.
Definitely no reason for this to be a double album. Even at 30 minutes I think this would be a 3 or 3.5. As is, easy 2. 🤷
I got halfway through it which is better than I thought I would do. I can't say it's absolute shit because it is clearly well done for the genre. But there's no setting where I would choose to hear this. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to but I wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
Some nice old school beats, but not a fan of Ice-Ts flow
Idk I was never a huge fan of Ice T. This felt lacking in good lyrics (and sometimes lyrics at all)
Pretty cheesy album, but after another listen through, it does have some pretty good messages in it.
It's not bad: this album felt a little unoriginal (ik the name so had to make the joke). Everything about this just sounded the same and like it had been done all before. It wasn't bad but I didn't really enjoy listening to it at all. I am not a hiphop head or anything so I may be missing out on smth here but honestly it just needed smth a bit fresher.
4* for the beats -2* for the rhymes Man I don't get gangsta rap
Didn't mind this, but it was way too long. Seems like a pretty straight-ahead hip hop album, for the most part, with a few interesting samples. The vocal style seemed a little repetitive too. Rock Rap is not something I have ever enjoyed, and those excursions here did nothing for me except make me want to skip past.
You've got to be in the right frame of mind to make this work. A drizzly early morning stuck in the bloody Estuary Wilds is not quite South Central. It's a comedy album, right? So much machismo. Nice use of antidisestablishmentarianism. It's a shame there was no rhyme for this. Quite funky for hip hop. It bridges old school with world domination superstars.
🤡
Ok very boring repitive lyrics in some songs knock it down to two.
You'd never think that a man named Tracey Marrow would ever be able to get away with referring himself as the original gangster and quite frankly he doesnt. Stick to solving new york sex crimes please Icey
Never really listened to Ice T but it was alright. Not my favorite rapper.
Massa llarg, i sense molta substància.
Would have been 3 stars if it was half the length
Da går fint å hørra på, men e for langt
good but not for me
Thematically and lyrically not for me.
Hip hop. Otro coñazo
I wish I could be more positive about this album because there are alot of good moments on this album. However its let down by two things; skits and its length. It has no business being as long as it is. If you cut the skits and end the album with MVPs. The skits really suck.
Alright, I'm down to change it up with some rap 👍🏽 '91! meh, it was aight 2 stars
Body count the band and album or bust
Once the generator has produced the 1000th 90s hip hop album, you start to think ‘who gives a shit?’
How is this album in the list and not Paid in Full - Eric B & Rakim, which will be my suggestion once I finish the list.
Life was simpler on the early 90’s.
The first song absolutely set me OFF the noises in the background were triggering something in me which soon became a pattern. I mean some of his work is actually really nice- the rock aspect, and his actual rapping is nice, but all the distractions, the background noises, the inter parts, etc. was stuff that really made me resent the album.
he uses the same relaxed flow for the entire album its just slow 2.5
Didn’t like it
2 stars. Meh
oof, this was a tough listen. I like Ice-T. He is smart and charismatic, and I saw him live at the Enmore Theatre in 1989 with my mate Tim, and he was terrific live. I liked the Power album, and some of the Iceberg. But this is not good. It sounds like an early blueprint for gangsta-rap, even though it comes well after Straight Outta Compton and some of the other foundational-texts of the genre. It should sound a lot better than this. He repeatedly refers to himself as the \"O.G.\", and mentions his classic track \"Six in the Morning\" multiple times, which sounds like just trying too damn hard to establish his O.G. status cred. The misogyny is appalling. And he sure loves the n-word (to an almost ridiculous extent). And there is so much flab on this album. Home of the Bodybag, MVP and Ya Shoulda Killed Me Last year (and most of the skits) are just Ice rambling off the top of his head (not even free styling). And so long! At 72 minutes, this could have been significantly edited down, and made a much stronger album. I really wanted to like this, but it's flabby, lazy, repetitive, irrelevant and unpleasant. And Ice-T can be so much more than that. Not his best.
Meh
A lot of talking and skits. Also that "rock" song was pretty weird
He should stick to SVU.
A bit tedious. Sometimes quite entertaining but a bit too much for me. Rather a lot of unnecessary 'attitude'. Have no problem with explicit language when it's used creatively, but this is just for controversies sake.
Crazy to think that my Mum gave me this album on tape as part of a Christmas gift when I was in middle high school. I guess she didn't listen to it first. Pretty offensive and what I believe to be a low point in the evolution of hip-hop, the early nineties gangster rap.
Gangster rap is not my genre at all but if I listen and think "if this was playing while I was driving around in Saints Row 2, would I enjoy it?" Then the answer would be yes. 2.5/5
I love me a bit of gangster rap - but this was a lil much for a Tuesday morning in rural England. Soz.
Okay
Rap can be great, but not this one!
Not really a fan of this one.
I just don’t understand why the list author included so much early 90s rap.
Not my scene
I really just don't think I care for early 1990s gangsta rap. It's important and it's worth including on this project, but I just continue to not be that into it. That said, this album was more palatable to me personally than most of the early 90s gangsta rap I've received thus far. Speaking of the gangsta rap albums I've been given on this project, this album, like the others, contains a lot of important social commentary but also a lot of overt misogyny. Really, this album seemed a little bulky as well and could have benefitted from some trimming. Body Count was a nice surprise on the album! I actually think I would be able to get behind an Ice T punk album. I liked how the song was prefaced by an interview in which Ice T made it clear that he does what he wants; hearing him speak about skirting expectations and then doing it was outstanding. Overall, I think I'd give this album a 2.5-ish. Body Count almost makes it a 3 for me.
Hip-hop del de qué grande la tengo...
Hip hop rap. Un poco todo igual.
Just alright
I almost entirely forgot that Ice-T was a "hardcore gangsta" rap artist, before becoming a type-casted investigator in every single crime drama television show on TV made in the last decade. Honestly, this isn't all that special. The lyrics are largely sophomoric posturing (i.e. 'Ziploc'). The rhymes are mostly pretty obvious ends, slants, and identical. The verse timing is mostly repetitive and don't do much to play off of or enhance the tracks, with the notable exception of 'Lifestyles of the Rick and Infamous'. Some of the tracks are fun (i.e. 'Bitches 2'), with a ton of samples and layers, but in general they don't stand out from the crowd all that much. It's unfortunate because Ice-T seems like a pretty thoughtful guy who would have something important to say. There are glimpses of that in 9 tracks after 'M.V.P.s', for sure. Anyhow, if you want high quality early 90's rap, there is plenty of it. Let's put Jurassic 5's 'Quality Control' in here, instead!
Can see the influence it had on Hip Hop of the 90's, while still having the raw mix style of the 70's & 80's. Unfortunately this really means it's a poor version of both, not as polished as later artists like Tupac and not as authentic as Public Enemy. Has the worst of both eras as well with skits and attempts at rock music.
Mid
Two Ice’s back to back and neither of them were special to me. I just… it’s not for me. Sorry, I’m not someone who likes or wants to listen to gangster rap. *shrug*
The only track I found slightly interesting was Body Count. I understand what I’ve T did for gangster rap, but I find the music to be uninspiring and the rhymes to be subpar.
There's a few real standouts on this, but certainly not enough to justify its length. Half of the tracks could have been easily removed and it would have made a much stronger album.
Most of gangsta rap doest speak to me. Its always so far from my reality...I found that this album was just too long for what it was.
As Ice T said in Ziplock, “I’m back motherfucker” I’ve never really listened to Ice T before. I thought the first skit was pretty funny. I’m not quite sure what it was but I found his flow a little strange and didn’t love it on most of the songs. I think it wasn’t lyrically impressive enough for how slow he was rapping. This would have benefited from features. I really just am not an fan of any rap from this time period and think it all sounds the same.
Sorry to say this had a "frosty" reception in Casa Da Watts household. Ps: sorry about the crap dad joke pun above. Not funny. Just couldn't help myself.
Always great for a soundbite but just misses. Not as articulate as public enemy, not as dangerous as nwa, not as stoned as snoop dog. An interesting time for hip hop and he's part of that story but just not a big hitter.
Braggadocios
Ice T generally seems like a reasonable guy but I don't think I've ever knowingly listened to his records. I hoped I'd like this, but I found the beats dull and the lyrics a bit dumb. I'll give it another go when I'm in more of an old school hip hop mood, but overall it was generally underwhelming.
Some decently entertaining stuff here but overall this album feels very dated and doesn't bring nearly enough to the table to justify its long runtime. Not to mention the heaps of casual misogyny.
I'm sure it's trailblazing, but.... just not my jam
Ice T seems like a cool guy, but unfortunately, I still find rap music really boring(
Honestly, I went in not knowing what to expect, and it was better than I expected. It wasn’t that great however, it simply exceeded the low bar set for it. This isn’t really my genre. It follows the formula of its predecessors and albums that were inspired by this album, so there’s not much for me to say about it. Although the songs are relatively formulaic, the samples and sound effects were interesting. In addition, the commentaries interspersed throughout the album gives a bit of a story, which is also interesting. Favorite track: Body Count
Ice T has an incredible lyrical prowess, but I don't connect with this album. A lot of my enjoyment comes from the jazz and old school instrumentals, but they don't fulfill the lack of enjoyment that I get from the album as a whole. There a lot of choices that fall flat for me on this album, and there is a lot of uncomfortable sexual tension that I feel coming from the persona that puts me off. Speaking about instrumentals, I think that the Black Sabbath one goes incredibly hard. One of my favorite musicians, Backxwash sampled the same song and did it in a very different way, but I really liked that. Other than this specific thing though, this album doesn't really do it for me, but I do understand why it makes the list. There also seems to be a lot of bloat. This album is LONG. Like really long. And it has a lot of songs. If this album had concentrated on some of its central themes more clearly, I think it would raise its score from me. Body Count's song is pretty good. I like this fusion a lot even though I think many people do not enjoy the fusion between rock/metal into hip-hop. Highlights: 14, 18, 19, and 33.
90s rap just doesn't do it for me.
1991. O.G. Original Gangster
The real OG was Schoolly D. His 1985 single PSK What Does It Mean? is widely credited as the first gangsta rap song, including by Ice-T, who said it inspired him to write 6 'n the Mornin'. I don't know if Schoolly was still living at home or didn't have a phone in those days but Ice called him at his mum's, asking him to listen to his new track before he put it out. He wanted Schoolly to know he was a fan, not a biter. Ice had already used crime, and specifically murder, as a theme on 1984's Killers, but the murderers were abusive husbands and spineless young cops, and he was warning against getting caught up in it. Schoolly D never gives the Park Side Killas their full name in PSK, but he spells out that they're the in-crowd and if you don't already know what it means, you're not. When he hears another MC trying to copy his style, he pulls a gun on him. I prefer his earlier single Gangster Boogie, which has a fluid vocal cadence and groove that anticipates Paid In Full. PSK is closer to the cutting edge of 1984: the hard, sparse beat of Run DMC's Sucker MCs. However, its icy, cavernous sound is like nothing else I've heard in rap. The beat was made by Schoolly on a 909, while DJ Code Money dropped in vocals from The Official Adventures of Flash Gordon and Beside's Change The Beat. It's absolutely drenched in reverb, but steely. Around the same time, The Jesus and Mary Chain were making a similar sound on In A Hole. They would later explore their love of rap on Automatic, but at this point it was almost certainly a coincidence. As Schoolly put it, "It was anti-radio! It was anti-establishment. It was anti-everything. That’s the fucking difference." His "art first, money second" ethos may have been left behind a long time ago, but if there's any doubt that PSK's influence is still being felt today, the friend who phones Schoolly D in the second verse is called Chief Keith. 6 'n the Mornin' is superior storytelling though, and Wreckin' Cru member The Unknown DJ eases off on the reverb to let Ice-T's narrative take the starring role. Like Killers two years earlier, it depicts a South Central where violence is constant and seemingly at random. His delivery is laid back; there's no cause for excitement, this is everyday. This time it's a first person tale, but aside from a reference to "hos catchin' whiplash tryna glimpse the T," the narrator could be anyone. When he and Sean get pulled over by the LAPD they were probably driving safely. The cops find concealed weapons and Ice spends 7 years in jail. When he comes out, crack has taken over the streets. By 1991, a lot had changed in rap. Musically, it's a period with fewer drum machines and more sampled breaks. 5 years on from the genre's first platinum album, Raising Hell, it was a big business. You can bet Schoolly D's mum didn't answer his phone any more. The PMRC had made artists put advisory stickers on their records, which must have felt like a dare to take things further, but also contributed to a growing defensiveness, with lyricists constantly calling out their critics like Axl Rose and reminding listeners of their past glories. It's depressing, but understandable for artists who have worked their way up from nothing and are surrounded by people who either want to take their place, ban their music or otherwise hurt them. We're also in the CD era, where every album has to be padded out to over an hour with skits and interludes. You have to wait until track 3 for an actual song. As a result, I haven't got through the whole thing in one sitting yet and my thoughts are very much first impressions. It's lean, fast and toppy, with few hooks. So far, my favourite songs are the James Brown sampling title track and Bitches 2, where the bass and trumpet give more dynamic and melodic variation. I prefer the slower, smokier records of the period: double bass, horns and piano, the smoothness and melodicism of A Tribe Called Quest, or Cypress Hill. However, the furious intensity does reflect the way things had ramped up in the previous few years, with the crack epidemic and the rate of homicides of black males aged 14-24 roughly doubling between 1984-89. Midnight is presented as a prequel to 6 'n the Mornin', but it feels more like a sequel, with the chaos of gun battles, police chases and explosions playing out over the vast cacophony of Iommi guitars, Bonham drums and a woman's screams. To be honest, I found the whole thing exhausting. If I tried to explain how it makes me feel, I'd get into the same "old man yells at cloud" territory as Hans Keller, when he interviewed Pink Floyd on The Look of the Week in 1967, so I'll give him the last word: "Why has it all got to be so terribly loud? For me, frankly, it's too loud, I just can't bear it."
Carino, ma non mi rimane molto. Bella 'M.V.P.s' Boh, gli altri album RAP mi parevano meglio.
Straight Up!
2.5/5. Has some decent songs here and there but jesus are there way too many songs.
oof, this was a tough listen. I like ICE-T. He is smart and charismatic, and I saw him live at the Enmore Theatre in 1989, and he was terrific live. I liked the Power album, and some of the Iceberg. But this is not good. It sounds like an early blueprint for gangsta-rap, even though it comes well after Straight Outta Compton and some of the other ur-texts of the genre. It should sound a lot better than this. He mentions Six in the Morning 3 or 4 times, which sounds like trying too hard to establish his cred. The misogyny is appalling. And there is so much flab on this album. MVP and Ya Should Killed Me Last year (and most of the skits) are just Ice rambling off the top of his head (not even free styling). And so long! And Ice-T can be so much more than that. Not his best.
A look into the lives of the LA rappers moving into the 90s. This lengthy album has many interludes and asides where it felt a little drawn out. Definitely some tracks could've been cut, or edited a little better. Best: O.G. Original Gangster Worst: Fly By
2.5 just because it's Ice T.
its not for me. I confused ice T and ice cube, I preferred the ice cube one..
Too long, nothing stood out. Shite lyrics and all I could hear was Dan Harmon.
2/5 meh, nigga nigga niggani gga, tylsät biitit ja riimit
Too long and repetitive
Not a big rap fan.
not heard it before, OK for the first 10 mins then lost interest.
Too many tracks. Album lasts over an hour, which is way too long. Also, too much foul language. Ice-T is a good rapper though.
Ice T is a budget Ice Cube, but this isn't as shite as i expected. suffered from the disease that all rap albums have of the stupid skit things where they always talk about how big their dig is and how much poontang they get but i'll let that slide as even they weren't as bad as ones i've previously suffered.
A little long, understand the impact but not hooked, might need another listen, do like the rock elements, however, esp. in Body Count No Saved Songs
Inte så bra 2/5
Some solid grooves.
Pimpin' ain't easy indeed.
Its not my Genre. Lyrically its enjoyable enough but there isn't much to make this stand out from the crowd and I am immensely bored by half way through 2/5
Hip-hop del de qué grande la tengo...
Rap isn't really my favorite thing to listen to, but its 90s rap so it isn't as bad
not a good rapper
Edelleenkään ei yhtään mun genre. NWA toimi vähän paremmin kuin tämä. Saman biisin looppausta alusta loppuun biisin teemojen muuttuessa marginaalisesti.
2.5
Not a huge fan of this album.
appreciate it
I love Law & Order SVU, but this was too much.
Want to know what dogshit sounds like? This record is for you.
1 - TERRIBLE
Nope nope
1/5 primeiro que não consegui terminar.
Thank you Mr T for explaining the over use of the N-bomb by you and your genre more broadly. Very eloquently put. And you are right, you do have freedom of speech. And yes, I will stay off your dick. But, I will never enjoy your music, your aggression, misogyny, ego or glorification of gang culture. So kindly stay off my dick too. Thank you.
Not another rap album with some more 'With a niggga nigga here, a nigga nigga there, and a bitches, bitches here and a bitches bitches there, old Ice T had a rant, eeyi eeyi oh!' What a load of old farm fertiliser.
No.
Toch liever Fuze Tea
Guns, violence, misogyny, ‘Look at me, I’m amazing’… This record seems to capture everything I hate about this genre’s leanings, which is its only achievement as far as I’m concerned. But then I can’t help thinking I’m probably not really Ice T’s key demographic. Tedious, egotistical, rubbish, but each to their own, eh?
Tiresome. How can it be good when the topic of your art is so blatantly you. A self-aggrandising load of old bollocks. I daresay you could beat me in a knife fight, gun fight, dick measuring or whatever but not very bothered thanks Ice-T
Dislike this music so much. Tough man bragging does nothing for me.
This album gets what it gets because though seminal in the history of rap, especially “gangster rap”, it has only the barest most incipient touches of the creativity that hip hop would grow into. Everything, the lyrics, the nursery rhyme schemes, the delivery, the production, and the ideas, everything sounds dated. I mean can today’s Ice T even support the albums violent, anti police themes after having made millions of dollars playing a police officer on tv for over a decade? Does the justification of the use of the word “bitches”, don’t worry ladies he calls men “butches” too so it’s okay, hold up under any modern logical scrutiny? However beyond all this and in no way impacting my score, I find the use of the “N” word problematic for me as a white listener. This is bound to come up again if virtually any other rap albums are featured on this list so let me address it specifically once. The totality of this album is noticeably light on the use of this word by modern rap standards but there is an entire song dedicated to its use so it feels appropriate to comment on this here. At once there is the very obvious difficulty that listening to this music creates an environment in which I have to repeatedly hear a word that I do not want to and cannot repeat which is almost the exact stated purpose of a song, to get stuck in your head. I was raised in some poor parts of the South, and I have heard this word said more to me in person by people of all shades than I ever need to have heard it. It is a hateful, debasing word to me no matter whose mouth it is in, and I simply cannot understand, rationalize, or support its use by anyone. Arguments that it is somehow a reclamation of a hate word by the oppressed do not hold water with me. It’s not an a word appropriated by the oppressors from some vestige of common black culture. It’s a word of the slavers, of the unjustifiable time when men fully believed they could own another human being to be treated like a lesser animal. These ideas and this word need to come to an end. It is a remnant of a bygone time that we are all best healing from and leaving behind. It is a label of “other” that is unsustainable in our globally connected era. Never again should anyone live in fear of being owned. This is not to say that the experiences of Africans at the hands of European and American slavers should never be forgotten. Let it forever be a cautionary tale of the inhumanity that humans can visit upon other humans, but letting it become a cultural identity serves no one.
Well there we have it - served up THREE American c(rap) albums in SIX. days. I now know beyond doubt what genre dominates and pollutes this list and why my average star rating is 2.62. 1/5 27/2/26
He needs some cool tunes, not just any will suffice But they didn't have Ice-T, so he bought Vanilla Ice.
Gangsta Rap. Why? 24 largely indistinguishable tracks. Only hightlight is the sampling on Black Sabbath on the track "Midnight".
Intéressante découverte mais je ne réécouterais pas.

DNF - don't think this one is for me. It's hard to take this album serious because it dated so poorly. "i'm the illest"??? ik it's the slang of the era but this just isn't for me and that's okay!
Total mince
I'm sure it hit hard back in the day, but comes across as corny now.
No va
Despite being only 1h12m - it felt like it was never going to end. Not a single memorable track.
O.G. Original Gangster (1991) is the fourth studio album by Ice-T. Okay, so this is the first album that I couldn’t bring myself to listen to all the way through so I’m not going to even attempt a review. Gangsta Rap is not for me, and I feel alright about that. I slogged through nine songs, but that wasn’t even half way through as the album has a whopping twenty-four!!
I couldn't even finish this album.
Mucho rap, meh
I skipped this one, was put off at the first few songs. Not my thing.
Rap US
Oh he needs to stick to acting fr
you sucked in surviving the game

OMG with the bitches and hoes.
Hip Hop, 51 eme album => 1/5
Couldn’t get past the first two songs. Nothing redeemable, absolute trash. I see no artistic value in listening to some pompous fool bragging about all the sex he has and how awesome he is. Zero stars.
this is all i dislike about rap
Not for me.
Dire.
Not my thing
This just reaffirmed my aversion to hip hop
