Reviews (page 6 of 8)
I have to admit I failed to listen to the full 3 hours of this - although I did listen to the first 15 songs a few times. Was surprised to recognize and enjoy a couple of them (All My Little Words and The Book Of Love) from either old playlists or adverts or later covers. These songs aside the majority of the other songs felt fairly slight and generic with throw away corny lyrics and the overall vibe is fairly disposable. Based on the 15 tracks I listened to it was a 1/7 hit ratio - extrapolating this would be 10/ 69 tracks. A lot of fluff to trawl through for a limited payoff.
Don't believe your own hype kids
I am docking a star for the ridiculous length of this album. May my wrath serve as a warning to other artists contemplating this sort of stunt.
This is a LOT. The music and production are pretty monotonous. The art-y concept of putting out 69 songs kinda moves them out of the mainstream and makes this a vanity project for hardcore fans. Those fans received it well and love the album. Critics also loved it because of the "artistic" value of it. But it's too much for a new or casual listener. I found it to be repetitive and monotonous and I don't see any situation where I'd revisit this.
Did we just throw these hastily together just to make the song count 69? There's some actual promise on this album with some cool sounding songs that kinda remind me of British New Wave albums, and then there's some real trash that seems like it was written in 15 minutes while sleep deprived. It's just too long for no purpose.
I get that you can’t have an album called “69 love songs” without a minimum of 69 songs but couldn’t they have made it 10-12 love songs instead? It’s not bad it’s just bloated and long.
Umm the tracks I listened to had a few decent ones. But... ain't nobody got time for the rest if it didn't make a case for itself after the first 30 mins of listening
Disc 2 was better than the others. Meh album
I guess with an album of so many tracks, most people can find a diamond or two in the rough, as I did. It's these one or two that keep this from getting a one-star rating. Mostly it was a sore test of endurance, and one that I certainly won't be repeating - even if I do love "Papa was a Rodeo".
I've never heard of Magnetic Fields before and I don't think I was missing anything. Anyway the album is from 1999 but sounds like it was from 1969, maybe that was the idea?! There's a mix of genres including Country 🤮, pop 🥱 and Pop Rock 🤨. It is not bad but it not amazing either.
3 hours for an album is just a bit silly really
Ain't nobody got time for this
DNF… very long and not that interesting. Got maybe an hour in figured I’d heard everything there is to hear. Not necessarily bad, just pretty meh. 2/5
"haha let's make a 69 song album cause that's FUNNY" "THAT'S FUNNY" why did the critcs think this was acceptable to be on the list??? whilst this isn't the longest one, it FEELS like the longest album on the list. there's a few... good tracks but again if ur making 69 tracks and there's not a single good one on there, you are doing SOMETHING wrong. good on me for one sitting this album at the first possible moment I could one sit this album...
You know, when you were a child, and you disliked how many love songs were on the radio, as the songs didn't connect to your life experiences. This album feels exactly how I felt as a child, but as an adult.
Cool idea but I am not listening to nearly 3 hours of this. I listened to roughly 30-40 minutes and that was enough.
Some of these are whitty, fun little tracks, acceptable little instances minimalism and sentimentalism. Most of these seem less developed and throughtout than children's songs sung around a fire pit at a camp with reluctant, post-juvenile, camp counselors that might have snuck in a few shots of cheap whiskey to help get through the sing-along portion of their duties. I don't understand why this triple album was included on this list. It was a drag to make it all the way through this album, and I may have been more forgiving if it didn't waste 3hr of my time, but alas now we'll never know.
I want to like the vocals as there aren't many baritones making music, so I'll count that as a positive even if they aren't as good as Matt Berninger (the guy from The National). These songs are decent and there's some variety, so points for that. I guess we should also award points for audacity... ...but also subtract points for throwing too much shit into a single compilation and calling it an album. Editing matters. Figuring out which songs shouldn't make the cut is a part of creating an album; it's unlikely that every song you ever write is going to be a winner. Double albums rarely work, and I'm not sure anything other than greatest hits collections can justify more than 2 discs. A judicious selection of these songs could probably get a 4, and picking 15 tracks at random would probably get a 3 as this generally isn't bad...but there aren't many great tracks on here, either. A shit ton of mediocrity wears on the listener after a while, so I feel like a 2 is appropriate here.
When presented with an album that is 69 songs long, it is easy to have already made one's mind up that it couldn't possibly be good enough to warrant all that. This album vastly overstays its welcome, though at times the genius of what the band set out to do shines on through. Unfortunately, intent alone is not enough to make an album good and no amount of sly smiles, winks, or nudges are enough to convince me that this album isn't a bit too indulgent. The execution isn't all that bad, most of the time, but I fear the idea itself is inherently flawed. Truth be told, this album sits neatly between 2 and 3 stars for me, but I'm giving it two because I just don't think the quality of the songs justify the runtime.
A difficult album to rate – not only because I have mixed feelings about it, but also because it’s hard to give a unified rating to what is basically 3 or 4 albums folded into one. To be honest, there’s almost nothing I like here musically. Soft indie pop with a bittersweet vibe bores me very quickly, and had this been a standard 12-tracks album, I would probably have given it the lowest rating possible, especially since I’m really not a fan of the singer’s droning voice. However, regardless of how I feel about the music, you’ve got to admire the sheer commitment (and even madness) it takes to create such a gigantic tapestry of songs and call it an album. I can only respect a band that so boldly goes against the usual norms of the format. To honor their insanity, I tried really hard to appreciate it – I painfully pushed myself through all 69 songs, grinding my teeth at every turn after the first hour or so. Were my efforts worth it in the end ? Not really, unfortunately. I recognize the talent, and I respect the concept – the idea of a collection of semi-parodic love songs exploring the various tropes and stereotypes of the genre is fun on paper, and there’s a clear humoristic vibe that I can totally dig. It’s also more experimental than it sounds at first, with an interesting mix of pop, cabaret music and strange jazzy beats. However, the execution leaves me mostly indifferent ; the songs are a mixed bag of nice and awful tracks, and start to feel terribly repetitive after the 20th or 30th song you listen in a row. So yeah. It’s not my cup of tea, and I will never ever listen to this album again. But despite my own lack of personal interest, I’ll add 1 star for originality and audacity. 4/10
I really didn’t see this coming. It’s basically 69 love songs played as jokes, with super simple lines like “The day is beautiful and so are you, my car is ugly but I’m ugly too… but I got wheels.” I smiled a few times, sure, but the whole thing feels too long, and it’s not just a feeling, it is damn long. Also, the constant second-degree mood, in the lyrics and the light, almost toy-like music, makes it hard to me to take this album seriously. The title “69” and the constant nods to alcoholism say everything about how seriously this project takes itself. Funny, but nowhere near what I expect from this list.
2.5 I guess. If it wasn't so long. I wasn't mad at it, but the genre is not enough for me to listen to it for just shy of 3 hours.
Approximately 60 too many
Annoying for this to be on the list, it’s not really an album. Some of the songs have SOLID production and songwriting, but then the next four tracks are an affront to the senses. Would have loved an album of like the ten best songs.
I have achieved the highest level of musical endurance by listening to all 69 songs on this album. I hope my medal of distinction comes in the mail soon. Would I listen to again? (shhh....don't tell anyone, but I didn't actually finish all 69 songs. I cheated and skipped to the end)
"What do we want?" "QUALITY" "What do we get?" "QUANTITY!" Imagine being so in love with the smell of your own farts that a dumb joke becomes a 2h 45m behemoth. There's a 4 star record somewhere in here, you daft bastards.
Parhaat: Blue You, Papa Was A Rodeo
I’m sorry, I’m just not going to listen to a 3 hour album. I’m sure it’s fine though
I only made it halfway through, but to be fair it was a LONG album. I generally liked the sound but the songs felt repetitive after a while.
Not for me. Dour.
Insane concept. 2 stars for originality
It’s very strange. A lot of varied songs and musicality.
3/4 of this could have been condensed into an email.
really wanted to like it bc it's a more interesting concept? but i couldn't finish the album. boring, repetitive, lyrics are corny, and the female vocalist was so grating i couldn't get through a single song with her. 2/5, saved solely by the fact its not bad just... boring
There's some good songs in here but you're gonna need a MAGNET to find them in a FIELD this big. 2.5 rounded down due to absurd length and low quality filler. I respect the bit of having 69 songs but not if you're half-assing it this much
Stephin, Your Album Is Too Long I respect the gimmick, but it's really, really samey... and it's not even that good of a samey! I say this as someone who listened to the entire Gershwin Songbook, I did not feel like listening to all of this.
Waaaayyyyyy too long, way too unvaried, and what variances there were were annoying or just unprofessional-sounding. If an album is going to present itself as a three-hour opus, it had better damn well earn it.
nettes konzept aber kann iwie nix damit anfangen
Way too long, most of these songs should’ve stayed in the studio
2 stars Yesterday I commented on how double albums were an aged concept and I got a 3 hour triple album. I’ll watch my tongue… It’s obviously outrageous and overstuffed with nonsense. There’s some good stuff sure, but is it really an album? It’s abstract art. It’s something else. This is less an album you must listen to and more of, at best, an album you must hear of. It’s a chore to get through and it’s not worth finding the songs that are good and compiling them into a reasonable length playlist.
well the title aint lyin
All filler no killer
Yep, it's a fad massively carried by it's concept.
Listened to this on and off throughout the day. The only album in over 800 so far that I've not listened to all the way through. Completely self-absorbed by Magnetic Fields. Nobody needs to listen to 3 hours of anything. Any band without their head up their arse would have finessed this to maybe a double album of 18 really, really good songs. 2 stars because there are some good tracks on here, but not 69 of them.
Interesting 'compilation' of songs but a bit too somber for me.
que ideia de jerico é essa de botar 69 musicas num album????? e o pior é que é tão grande que você acaba esquecendo todas as músicas vsf vou dar 2 só porque ao menos eles tinham um conceito (eu acho)
I find it a little hard to believe that anyone (except the band themselves) thought a 69-track record was a good idea. It's in poor taste, for more reasons than one. And the songs seem to get more deluded and obscure the further you delve. The first half of disc 1 isn't bad at all, but then the Magnetic Fields really seem to go off the deep end. The duo of Fido Your Leash Is Too Long / How Fucking Romantic is just strange: lots of wacky electronic sounds that are more distracting than interesting, and then a 1-minute track that very much goes against the album's title. (Unless this whole thing is meant to be a sarcastic metaphor about how true love is impossible? Could be.) By disc 2, less than half of the songs are musically convincing, and far too many are experimental in the absolute worst kind of way. Roses / Love Is Like Jazz is a complete trainwreck with absolutely nothing catchy or memorable. You won't be chatting to your friends about that great song you heard on the radio, Love Is Like Jazz. You have to wonder: what are The Magnetic Fields going for? Random noise acting as the most fillery filler of all time in order to hit that 69 benchmark? (Yes, I think that's exactly what they're doing.) The band has this "friendly quirky acoustic country band" feel going, and it's honestly pretty great. At least, to begin with. After the first 40 minutes, it gets a little stale. And after the next 40, and the next 40, and the next 40, you want to smash a guitar into your own head. The female vocal is strong. I first noticed it in Reno Dakota, one of a slew of 1-minute ditties, and I very much enjoyed it. The main male vocal sounds like a peculiar cross of Johnny Cash and Nick Cave – and under normal circumstances, that would be a huge plus. Unfortunately, I don't think the low budget electro-country-pop style really suits his voice. Papa Was a Rodeo is the best use of his voice, and it takes listening (suffering?) through half the album to get there. The album is an extremely inconsistent variety pack of several (mostly retrospective) genres and sounds. Some of it works, some doesn't. But in my mind, consistency is key, so this one's a bit of a miss. 2/5 Key tracks: All My Little Words, I Don't Want to Get Over You, I Think I Need a New Heart, Papa Was a Rodeo, Epitaph for My Heart
69 songs! What a novel concept. Sadly, the execution of this was significantly inferior to the idea. Not that this album doesn’t have some interesting parts to it, the playing is alright, and the voices are interesting. The depth of the one singer’s voice reminded me a lot of the Crash Test Dummies. I probably would give this a one, cause they really aren’t any standout songs, which is incredibly hard to do when you have 69 attempts. But I’m giving an extra star for effort.
Eh
Way too hipstery
It feels like the only thing this album is known for is being long, which is, like… okay? It’s a concept album, so what’s the concept? Being long? I mean, this is not even the longest album I’ve listened to. The only difference is that the longest album I’ve heard wasn’t long for the sake of being long, and had 10 songs instead of 69. It's not that it's repetitive or monotonous—it's not. This album actually has a lot of variety when it comes to instrumentation and vocal styles. I don't even mind most of the songs here (but don't particularly like them either). Some of them are extremely low effort, sure, but I can’t say I hated anything on this album. There's just too many of them (69, to be exact). I would rather listen to a couple of long songs than a bunch of shorter ones. They’re much more memorable this way. After a while, despite the fact that the songs here are different, they started to blend together as I began to lose interest. None of them stood out, which is not surprising. If your goal is to record 69 songs for a single album, you can’t really afford to come up with elaborate compositions for each one of them, and it’s even harder if you’re also limiting yourself in subject. Have I already mentioned that there are 69 songs on this album? At least one of them doesn't even have anything to do with love songs (Experimental Music Love), so the name is not even accurate. At least they’re not all about straight people, which is already more variety than 98% of love songs... Ah, I get it now. They were mad that straight people monopolized love songs, and this is an attempt to balance the scale—in one album, because why the fuck not. The subject of love doesn’t interest me whatsoever, which definitely a part of the problem, but I also don’t like the execution. At the same time, I don’t see how it could’ve turned out any better. I just don’t think this was a good idea. 5/10
There's probably a pretty decent album buried in there somewhere but I wasn't going to listen to 5-6 albums worth of material to try and find it.
Oh boy, my last of the epically long albums has finally arrived. I only know one song by The Magnetic Fields, so this is going to be a very new experience for me. I honestly have no idea of what to expect from the other 68 songs that I’ve never heard, but hopefully this album will be able to justify the three hours it’s going to take up! I’ll break each volume down individually, and then summarize the whole album at the end. Volume 1 This first volume was certainly something. It started off with “Absolutely Cuckoo,” which, definitely lived up to its name in its sound. The rest of the first volume was pretty uneven. Some songs were really beautiful, and some were really jarring. There were some interesting production choices, like vocal distortions and sounds that I could best describe as annoying. I did appreciate that there were some additional vocalists, other than Stephen Merritt, because his singing was really hit-or-miss with me. Even though there were some really nice sounding songs on this first volume, a lot of what was here was kind of forgettable, and sometimes the lyrics felt generic and bland. My favorite tracks on this disc were “All My Little Words,” “Let’s Pretend We’re Bunny Rabbits,” “I Think I Need a New Heart,” “Sweet-Lovin’ Man,” and “The Book of Love.” Out of all of those, “The Book of Love” was my favorite. I loved how gentle the strings were, and the lyrics were fantastic. This song always makes me think of Scrubs, no matter whose version I’m hearing. So far, I’d probably give this album two stars, but I’ll keep an open mind for the rest of it. Volume 2 After a rocky start with “Love Like Jazz,” this volume was much better than the first one. I really liked the melodies created by the electronic instruments on this volume much more than volume one. There were some really strong stretches of songs on this part of the album, complete with beautiful music and great lyrics. This section of the album felt much more even, and the songs moved at a much faster pace for me, even though it was the same amount of songs, and roughly the same length in terms of time. “Love Like Jazz” and “I Shatter” were the lowest points of this volume. “Love Like Jazz” felt like it thought it was clever, but I found it to just be pretty annoying and disjointed. The vocals on “I Shatter” felt really gimmicky, and I found this song to be unenjoyable as a whole. There were a smattering of songs that were just okay to start off this volume, but once “Grand Canyon” started, this section of the album took off, and didn’t look back. “Long-Forgotten Fairytale” was my favorite song on this section of the album. The vocals, main melody, and lyrics were all incredible. The percussion and bass complimented the light electronic elements really well. This song felt like early Depeche Mode merging with Violator era Depeche Mode. Other highlights from this part of the album were “No One Will Ever Love You,” “If You Don’t Cry,” “You’re My Only Home,” and “Abigail, Belle of Kilronan.” After this, I’m really excited for the last part of this album. Disc 3 Like the first two parts of this album, this third and final volume also started off with a song that I didn’t care for, “Underwear.” And like the first volume of this album, I really didn’t care for this final section, as 69 Love Songs plodded toward the finish line. I didn’t find anything particularly noteworthy about the music on this volume, nor I was I very impressed by the lyrics. Moreso than the other two volumes, this final volume had several songs that I thought were pretty grating or annoying, like “I Can’t Touch You Anymore,” “Strange Eyes,” “Xylophone Track,” and “Zebra.” However, “It’s a Crime,” “I’m Sorry I Love You,” “Yeah! Oh, Yeah!,” and “The Night You Can’t Remember were the best parts of this volume. “I’m Sorry I Love You” was my favorite of those good songs. The rhythmic elements were great, and I loved the tinny sound of the overall production. The vocals were excellent too, and it had a folk vibe that I really enjoyed. All the other songs were pretty unremarkable though, and this volume didn’t come close to volume 2. Overall, 69 Love Songs was a bloated and uneven journey. The concept is great, but The Magnetic Fields just couldn’t justify their vision in my opinion. There were some really good moments on the second volume, but the rest of the album paled in comparison to that middle section. Maybe 25 or 30 love songs would have been more palatable.
I got 2/3 of the way through but didn't finish. Songs are whimsical but 3 hours is way overkill. Anyone else kinda reminded me of They Might Be Giants? Just me?
Nice (but not really).
This would've been tolerable if it were 10 songs. There was absolutely no reason I needed to hear another 59. 1.5
Everything about this one was repulsive to me. The vocal performances, The melodies, the instrumentation, the fact that it's three fucking hours long. I got through most of the first hour and just couldn't do it anymore. I'll give it two stars instead of one because Logan tried to make the argument that it is a satire, and I guess I can see that. Still wasn't fun to sit through for me though.
Some of these are ok but a 3-hour album? Cmon man these weren’t all ready for prime time
I can easily listen to music for 3 hours. But not this music. Could not get through the whole album. Some of it was dreadful.
I dig several Magnetic Fields songs, but listening to them for over two and a half hours is kind of a chore.
I know everyone has ragged on this one already so I will keep it brief. Didn't need to be so long man. 3/10
Yeha no
Some solid stuff on here but it definitely feels like the name came first and then the songs were churned out to get to 69. A lot of filler and stupid diddies
A crazy long album of poetic songs with a bassy primary delivery. Not for me thk
Concept 5/5 Execution 2/5 Songs 2/5 Pain of the almost 3 hours of listening 1/5 At a push there is an albums worth of songs on here, would that make the 1001 - almost definitely not. (…Almost because there is a lot of dross)
Nicht so ganz meine Musik
This album is not bad. The problem is it's also not good. Which means the only notable thing about it is its extreme length, and that is not a good thing to be known for.
The longest album from this challenge. I could not finish it , don’t have enough time to listen to it.
69 trite songs is just way too many for me.
This is my 644th album and the first one I won't listen to, at least not in its entirety. 69 songs in 172 minutes, I mean, my life may be shit but I still value it more than dedicating three hours of it to this album. It's not worth it. 01) Absolutely Cuckoo - 6,0 02) I Don't Believe in the Sun - 5,5 03) All My Little Words - 7,5 04) A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off - 6,0 05) Reno Dakota - 5,5 06) I Don't Want to Get Over You - 6,0 07) Come Back from San Francisco - 6,0 08) The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side - 6,0 09) Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits - 6,5 10) The Cactus Where Your Heart Should Be - 4,5 11) I Think I Need a New Heart - 5,0 12) The Book of Love - 5,5 13) Fido, Your Leash Is Too Long - 6,5 14) How Fucking Romantic - 3,0 15) The One You Really Love - 5,0 16) Punk Love - 1,0 17) Parades Go By - 5,5 18) Boa Constrictor - 4,0 19) A Pretty Girl Is Like... - 5,0 20) My Sentimental Melody - 5,0 21) Nothing Matters When We're Dancing - 5,5 22) Sweet-Lovin' Man - 6,5 23) The Things We Did and Didn't Do - 5,5 24-69) did not listen to - / TOTAL: 5,33 (53/100) Current ranking: 570/644 So, I decided to listen to Volume One only. Half of these songs sound like some kind of stupid nursery rhyme. Maybe I should have taken one rating off because I didn't listen to two thirds of the album, but I'll give them the benefit of a doubt. Things could only get worse...
country etc., 3er box, 1999 -> 2
"But the one thing I hate 'Cause I can't concentrate No, I just can't abide Yeah, I've never the time to 69" - lyrics from "69" by Self Esteem Don't know why I kept thinking of that Self Esteem song while attempting to listen to this tedious slog of an album. It's a mystery!
can you have nostalgia for something you don't even really like? I think that's this album for me. I don't really like Stephin Merritt's voice or this band but when I was in my early 20s (a couple years after this album was released), the hipsters I worked with had this on regular rotation. So it takes me back to a time and place but I'm rolling my eyes just as hard now as I did then. And 3 disks at 2hrs 45min? Jesus...
Too long
3/10
Uggh
I can confidently say I will never listen to this album in full again. This album caused me to go 3 days behind schedule in this project. Are they for real? Most of the songs are BS and feel like they just wanted to get to 69 (teehee). I did start off giving it a legitimate shot and found towards the end I was so burnt out. I absolutely gravitated more towards the female voice, I enjoyed the songs she led way more. Definitely not one of the best albums of all time, probably just on this list because it’s out there. They should have knocked down the set list to the standouts but alas I suppose they got the attention they wanted with this stunt.
Just because you can write 69 love songs and record them….does not mean you should. Some of the songs are decent, but is this on the list because of the novelty of this album or because it is good music? I think the former.
Ain’t nobody got time for that
There is a record-and-a-half of really great music here. There is also a record-and-a-half of nothing. This is a three star record cut down by its bloat and arrogance.
Oh boy... here we go... I don't work tomorrow, so I was one day off from getting this on the weekend. I guess I will divide my review by disc. Looking back at this review is like watching someone slowly go insane. DISC 1: First off, I am not crazy about his voice, I wouldn't say he is bad, but I couldn't say he is any better than good. Second off, this just sounds like generic mid 2000's indie radio rock, so I guess it was ahead of its time. Third off (?), I am currently on song 15 and I feel like every song so far has been 4 chord songs in 4/4 with the basic open chords without any other instruments besides that one with a synth part. I really hope they add more instruments on the later discs because this is really starting to get boring and repetitive. Well song 16 added some drums, but the song sounds like ass :/. Tangent: About 10 years ago when I first listened to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness the only version on Spotify was the extended version that Spotify say is "about 6 hours" (lol). I knew it was a double album and at that time I was really into Pink Floyd's The Wall, so I thought oh ok, it is only like an hour and 20. Then I listened to the whole thing (the main songs, not the demos) and loved it. Every song sounds so unique and there are so many great ideas. I personally think it is one of the best paced albums ever. I had no idea I was wrong, I still thought it was an hour and half. I thought this for years, and I listened to this album a lot. It took me years to realize it was actually a double CD and not a double vinyl, and it was really 2 hours long. I have no idea how I didn't notice sooner, but it is just so good that it doesn't feel long. Back to Disc 1: Now comparing that feeling to this album. Disc 1 has felt like the same song 20 out of 23 songs. I heard somewhere that this album had 69 unique interpretations about love, but so far most of them have just been sappy love songs. Unlike Mellon Collie, this album definitely feels like it's length. I just don't think these guys have enough ideas to make an almost 3 hour album. At least the end of Disc 1 had more songs with the full band. Disc 2: "The same song a million times" haha I get it. I don't really get the "in different ways" line though. I am not really sure I would call that song jazz, it sounds more like Cleopatra's Cat by the Spin Doctors if you know that song. So far, Disc 2 has been shaking things up quite a bit, which is good, a lot of new styles of songs, but I don't think there has been a single song over a 3/5 on this album yet. I think the female vocalist is worst than the guy, and it seems like they give her all of the worse songs too. If You Don't Cry is not very good. 3 synth songs in a row... the synth ones are the worst ): all of the variety at the start of Disc 2 seems to be gone. Disc 2 is starting to become kinda bad. I am at the halfway point, and this is the song were I am changing my rating from a 3 to a 2. The generic indie pop rock songs were inoffensive, but these synth ballads are just bad, and there are too many of them. Kiss Me Like You Mean it, is also pretty bad. This album just keeps getting worse, I might start skipping the songs that I can't stand. "The light reflecting off the mirror ball"???? you mean a disco ball, it is the same number of syllables. I completely zoned out for the last 5 or 6 songs, anyways onto Disc 3, hopefully it gets better. Disc 3: Underwear is not a good sign of things to come, and these streaming numbers are really starting to fall off. HOW IS IT'S A CRIME ONE OF THE LONGEST SONGS ON THIS ALBUM?!?! ITS A 3 SECOND IDEA!?!? IT IS BARELY A SONG?!?! I AM LOSING MY MIND!!! Every Disc gets worse and worse... Love in the Shadows another nothing song, great just what I needed. I just can't anymore, these are barely songs. They are fragments of ideas. They really did throw all the worst songs at the end of the album, they really thought no one would get here. But I did, and they suck. They really ended with a knock off krusty krabs ass song. What a joke. Review: Well that was 1 and a half hours of some of the most mid music I have heard followed by an hour of torture. I don't think even if you condensed this down to 45 minutes of the best songs it would be any higher than a high 3. I think the only way to "fix" this album in my eyes would to take a handful of the better songs and expand on them and really work them into something more unique. This album is the definition of quantity over quality. I really did not enjoy this album, but it isn't unlistenable which is the only reason it isn't a 1. This should be called 1 love song 69 times. Low 2.
As if I could listen to it all. Decent but not great.
Tooo drony for me
Pleasant tedium.
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should!
Off the cuff remark: littered with gems, comedy and also ill-thought ideas. Perhaps that was the point. There really are some great moments but it feels like there is a serious lack of thought about quality? Standout track: I Don't Want to Get Over You. Marvellous Revisit?: individual tracks, definitely. The whole thing at once, no, never again.
too fucking long what the hell is this shit
Ok, a couple gems, but this was a slog. I tried to be open-minded and I thought it had some charm, but after a while it just became too much.
Not for me
At best, reminded me of Jonathan Richman or Sufjan Stevens or The National. At worst, and at such length (although I respect the commitment to the concept) it drags on and feels dull and repetitive. (2.5 stars)
I really like a couple of the songs on here, but because there’s 69 the couple don’t really outweigh the rest.
Might be ok if the best bits were condensed into 1 short album maybe with 6 to 9 love songs.
Tedious
Not really liking this sound.
Come on now..
Too long
I feel like this was the conversation while they were not in their right mind on a tour bus somewhere between Indianapolis and Memphis Member 1 "Hahaha, route 69..." Member 2 "69...how f*cking romantic, haha" Member 3 "Teenagers would totally buy an album if we named it 69" Member 2 "And we could call say they were romantic songs but they wouldn't actually be to be ironic and emo" Member 3 "Andy would bicycle across town in the rain to bring you candy..." Member 1 "They will totally eat that up...haha eat up, candy, 69..." *Everyone laughs like a 12 year old boy* Yeah...not impressed and just confused by this weirdness...
Voice is a bit boring. Melody's are good, overall not super interesting though. TOO MANY SONGS
I couldn't get through it all - but unless the last part radically differs from the first two my score probably holds up. Difficult to know what to think, Feels more like you have stumbled upon s secret notebook rather than an album. It pushes what I consider to be an album to the limits. Not just in it's length (which is insane) but each song feels like a new page in that notebook rather than a stepping stone to a wider piece
I’m not wasting 3 hours listening to ho hum love songs. It was decent music but waaaaay tooo long.
Well that was something. This would’ve had a legit shot at a 4 if it wasn’t ALMOST THREE HOURS LONG. Wholly unnecessary. Sounded really nice but I didn’t want to spend pretty much all of my afternoon with this droning on in the background. If they hadn’t switched vocalists every now and then I would’ve lost my mind so I appreciated that.
3 albums & almost 3 hours of over-indulgent, self absorbed lyrics with vocals that are all over the place. made it thru the 1st album & that was more than enough. why oh why is this taking up space on this list???? 1.5 stars but I'll round up because they can play instruments & have some variety in sound
I wonder if the author loved the significant other that much or he just wanted to get laid that badly. Quantity doesn't mean quality.
I was hopeful at first but the length made me mad, there is zero need to put out an almost 3 hour long album with that kind of music...!
not bad a little boring at times very long but influential
Death by 1000 paper cuts. That's the best way to describe what I just went through. This isn't bad music. Its quite nice actually. Not exactly my style but I can get down for some amount of time. But not this amount of time. Give this man an editor, someone to tell him no. If this was like 12 tracks and maybe 45 minutes of runtime I would very easily give this a positive review but at 3 hours long its a test in patience more than an album. After 7 songs I was already fatigued. And knowing Im only 10% of the way there at that point is agonizing. I did listen to it all but I was done so fast. There are good songs probably but I could not pick them out of this police lineup of every person who ever lived. Its just insane. U have wasted my time and brother stop falling in love with every Barista u ever meet. Yes every woman is beautiful but have some damn restraint. Love isn't this and this only technically counts a music
Sounds lovely but sadly neither of us have the capacity for 69 songs by one band
Dipped in and out, one song was alright, it’s obviously too long
Favorite Track: All My Little Words
Initial reaction … Who? 🤷♀️ Wikipedia … Oh No 😔 Reviews … I’m really going to hate it Track 1 … let’s hope they are all this short Track 2 … I quite like his voice, maybe won’t be so bad Track 5 … who’s the girl? A bit screechy Track 14 … He sounds bored now. Track 34 … halftime break ⬇️ ⬇️ Track 35 … back in (it’s all a bit same-y) Track 48 … that seemed like a really long pause between tracks - I honestly thought it had finished 😔 Track 53 … time for another break 🥱 ⬇️ ⬇️ Track 57 … I think he’s losing it Track 68 … this is my favourite track (skip to this one if you’re cheating 😉) Done ✔️ Feels like I deserve some sort of reward. I’ve awarded 2 stars for effort .. but I will NEVER be listening again.
Holy shit, 69 songs for real? Nice.I guess this is what I'm listening to today... It's cool a band did this, but this is not for me. It is 68 songs too many. I imagine if I were to inject heroin into my veins and pass out on the living room floor for the afternoon, this would be a good album to have playing in the background. OMG, I'm going to lunch and it's still playing... I am glad I can mark this off the list, never to revisit it again. Track 22 was a favorite, Sweet-Lovin' Man. Kind of a 60's throwback. This album has some ok songs, followed by some of the worst songs I've ever heard. It ebbs and flows, which would happen when you have 69 songs on an album. Thank Buddha, it's over. I'm giving this a 2.
69 songs, 2 hours and 45 minutes long. Not one mention of a horse wife. What are we even doing here?
Lol
too long but a NICE idea
It wasn’t invasive but I don’t feel like it was necessary to be 3 hours. I get the “69” connection but I’m pretty sure I turned off half way through
This did not need to be this long... really started tuning it out.
Alright - getting this part out of the way; it's long as all hell and is a dumb idea. Reading out it, they thought of doing 100 love songs and decided that would be too long so they did 69. This is a dumb thing to do to anyone. I'm sure there are some okay songs in here. As a personal challenge or quest I respect someone for putting in the work and creativity to do this. It doesn't mean it's good. I listened to this in batches the same way someone would get through exercise or studying.
I'm scared Like the crumbs falling off of a crusty bread of a better album. Am I experiencing a musical madness? A musical multiverse of 69 ways one song could have ended up? I'm too busy trying to survive this avalanche of songs to retain anything. There is no way this is required listening. I don't even hate this. It's kind of inspiring actually. Sonically there might be something here, but this is supposed to be a list of albums you MUST hear. I fell asleep and almost gave it 4 stars twice. There is too much!
Way too long to be this boring.
Not my thing at all.
Didn’t enjoy
Some really good songs but just too many songs.
Got through 2/3rds of this and counting as a lesson. There’s some genuinely decent stuff in this but unfortunately it’s sandwiched between monotony and shite
3 hours...couldn't make it all the way through, some songs were good most were painful.
I've been dreading this one for a while. It's kind of an insane commitment we've made here to listen to an album every single day, so the prospect of effectively listening to 3 was sorta like the full chamber in Russian Roulette (I've already done the Ella Fitzgerald one). So sure enough, there I am at half 11 at night squeezing out the last of these crappy tracks after a full Easter Sunday. I nearly had some admiration when I read the Wikipedia page and it seemed like there was some intended irony, but the artist has another really long album like this too. In summary, your scientists were so obsessed with whether they coil, they didn't stop to think if they should.
Some of these are ok but a 3-hour album? Cmon man these weren’t all ready for prime time
TL;DL. No but seriously 69 songs bro
Ngl been waiting for this one 200+ days ever since hearing about it but it was a super disappointment. Really got into a few on the first 23 but the next 23 there was barely any and the last 23 all just were meh. I was hoping at the very least a 3 star rating would be achieved but this is 2. Bad. Unfortunately
Not quite
There are a few good songs on this album but most are just weird little dittys. Didn't finish it though because one of the tracks made me feel physically ill.
Niiiiiice... For real though, this is a prime example of why quality over quantity is important. There wasn't much that stuck out over the nearly 3 hr runtime, and I get the impression they're writing this number of songs more as an achievement rather than for the artform or having something important to say. So yeah, I did get the whole way through it as background noise, but didn't feel worth my time
Ugh wtf this is actually 69 songs and almost 3 hours long. This is messed up.. How about 14 of my finest love songs asshole? Just finished the first disc and it's nothing special. Probably going to be another 2 hours of this which I'm not a huge fan of. Some songs have an LCD Soundsystem sound to them but that's like 2/3 out of 69. This probably deserves a 3 but it gets a 2 from me because this dude sucks for not splitting this up.
Some entries on this list really call into question the author's taste.
Oh, what a cute title. They obviously don't literally mean 69 lo................... Made it through the whole thing. Didn't hate anything, will not listen to any of these tracks again. Just about regained consciousness enough on "For We Are The King of the Boudoir" because it sounded like something Henry VIII might have written and contained the, quick frankly MAGNIFICENT lyric : "One tryst with me and you'll be spinning like a gyroscope, One tryst with me and you'll be Pope" 1 star with a bonus star for the gyroscope / pope rhyming couplet.
Too bang average to be 2 and a half hours long
there is no world where i sit through 69 songs to give a rating on something i don't really enjoy. i did listen to the first disc. very meh but fair play for the concept...i guess
Hmmm ... this is a very strange album. My first thoughts were "terrible". But there are some real gems on it ("Time Enough For Rocking We're Old", "Long-Forgotten Fairytale" or even "Two Kinds Of People", which I love). In between then again stuff, which has nothing special. And because the majority of the album is like that I ended up giving a two.
Too many songs
2/3 (too long)
This album is SO DAMN LONG. I get that's the point but I can't make it through so many songs. I understand and respect the concept, but most of these songs are not fully fleshed out, so not only does the tons of songs hurt the album because there are too many songs, but they are also of lower quality. Had this been cut to a single album and more effort had been put into the individual songs, this could be a 4 star album. As it stands, it's not that good. There are a couple of good songs on here, and if not for the random super weird tracks, this could put me to sleep. Favorite Song: I Don't Believe in the Sun Least Favorite Song: Experimental Music Love
The vast majority of these are really bad. I imagine the influence here is in the concept, but I’ll take quality over quantity.
Soooo long. And not even that good fr.
This might take the cake for most self indulgent album of the cd era. I find the sheer length simply unbearable. I don't hear anything in the music/concept to justify its insane demand on the listener. Most of it is so half baked that I find it almost insulting. I don't get it. Both the singing voices and lyrics are irritating to me. In trying to march onward and listen to this there are some okay tunes buried in there but as an album its unrefined/unfiltered stance is utterly preposterous.
I will give 69 Love Songs credit, the title certainly was not lying but was it really to the benefit of the album. Due to the album's sheer number of songs, the run time clocks in at nearly 3 hours and they made sure to take advantage of that time to do whatever. When it comes to each field of the album (Lyrics, vocals and music) there is good, and there is really bad. This is just one of those albums where i feel that you could cut out a lot of these songs (even some of the more palatable ones) and this album would be much better. Granted, it would ruin the title but you really gotta ask yourself the question "Is the novelty worth it?". Best Song: If You Don't Cry Worst Song: Punk Love
69 - nudge, nudge, wink, wink - love songs. It would have been nice if they hadn't left quality control to the listeners. Because I'm very sure there is an album's worth of good love songs on this. But very definitely not over three albums' worth.
Got a minor heart attack when I saw the length of this album. Took me most of the workday to get through it, with various interruptions between, meaning I probably missed some songs completely, and heard others like 3 times. This album leaves me with two polarizing emotions. On one hand I am actually a bit impressed that it wasn't worse than it was. There were a handful of actually decent songs in there, and none of the songs ever hit complete rock bottom. On the other hand this wasn't an album I enjoyed at all in any way. It just dragged on forever, and I kept looking at the track list and counting the songs left until it was done. Making an album of 69 songs surely makes it stand out simply because it is long, but I'm not sure that's why you want people to notice it. Maybe they're thinking "all publicity is good publicity". Because if they actually think they've made an album with 69 songs worthy of showing the world, I think they're a bit delusional. This is definitely not a formula that respects the listeners time, nor guarantees any type of quality. Quantity over quality is certainly true for this one. Overall not as bad as I had feared, but the whole records is mostly a blur and I won't revisit it or recommend it to anyone.
Some days on doing this project really test your resolve, I feel like this is going to be one of them. 12 Songs in and it's already all blending together and sounding the same. The guy's voice just kind of drones on. The songs are fine but I'm not sure I can take 57 more songs... Song 30, I am soooo bored with this. I would have liked this album had it been 10-13 songs like normal. God what a slog. I appreciate the ambition but most bands don't even have anywhere close to 69 good songs total. Why the hell would you try to write 69 songs for one album? Really it was more like 5 songs each done 13 different ways. 2/5
Far to long.. 12 song will be enough
Listening to music is supposed to be an enjoyable experience, not a chore. This was most definitely a chore, a slog, an exhausting experience! I’m sure it seemed a great idea to them at the time but the saying ‘quality over quantity’ really does apply here. There were some elements of promise but this was just swamped by the number of appallingly poor songs. And whilst it’s commendable to use various music styles and instruments it’s really not necessary to try all of them on the same album. I’m giving this 2 stars but a large chunk of that is to reward my efforts in having to listen to it all.
OK, so it wasn’t quite as bad as the write-up promised, and there’s something charming about it. But other than the odd witty lyric and occasional musical interest, his voice isn’t that strong and it’s just too long to be anything other than tortuous (and I only listened to maybe two thirds of it). Bonus point for high level albeit misguided ambition and putting the hours in.
I find double albums rarely justify their length, so I wasn't too excited about this monster. There are some really good songs in there, some catchy melodies, great lyrics and moments of humor, all of which would be memorable if they weren't buried under mounds of filler. Some tracks are just forgettable, some are too twee, some are cringe worthy attempts at humor, and some don't even pretend to be more than filler. The good moments would make a great album. Maybe even a great double album! But I shouldn't have to go digging through so much dirt to find the gems, and you sure as hell don't get bonus points for it. It actually made me pretty angry to listen to.
Charming, but 3hrs is crazy. Cool concept, but fatigue set in quickly
I know it’s alluded to in the title, but this is ridiculously long. I’m not listening to all of this.
Some good songs, some average, some not so good - but 69 songs on one LP spanning almost 3 hours? Just too much 'filler', reduced to 1 LP would have likely have seen me double my rating.
While I appreciate and respect the specific number of songs on this album, three hours of this is a bit much. I'm deducting a star for the length. Other than that, some of the songs were good, some were not. Album #2 had the best tracks overall, in my opinion. Favorite song: The Book of Love. This one is actually really, really good. Least Favorite Song: Zebra
So this is a project more than an album to savor there are some good individual songs and the breadth of "love" and its meaning is well explored lyrically... its not something I would want to move through a second time despite this being a huge accomplishment I thought it would have more individual songs I would want to go back and savor.
You'd think an album revolved around a sex position would be better
Ei jumalauta
Just too long
Nah....get out of here. A 2 hour 45 minute, 69 song album just flat out isn't necessary. Just release three different albums (or MAYBE even cut some filler- what a novel idea). Male lead singer's deep voice is unnerving as well. Isn't the worst on this list by far but come on now. 4/10 (2/5)
This album is really going to test the aged old saying of quantity does not equal quality. Let’s see. 3 hours is going to be a long chunk out of my day. Track one grabbed me, I liked it, following on the album had some nice moments like I don’t want to get over you, the one you really love and Fido, your leash is too long. Overall through it was full of filler and was like a poor Leonard Cohen album, lots of love but poor story telling. It went on too long. I feel with 10 of the best tracks this could be good. Favourite song: Absolutely Cuckoo Least favourite: 60 out of the 69 tracks Album artwork: Simple yet smart cover.
Moi quand l'album m'a été généré: haha, funny number Moi en ouvrant l'album: QUOI?!! YA VRAIMENT 69 CHANSONS? ÇA DURE FUCKING 3H DE TEMPS??!!! Moi vers le tiers de l'album: 🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮
Too long
Meh
Quite depressive, melancholic music. A couple of very nice, beautiful songs, but overall often annoying and definitely 2 discs too long.
Self indulgent and very average indeed.
es sind wirklich 69 Titel, naja; auf Duer ermüdend und einschläfernd
Not completely unlistenable but 3 hours and 69 songs? Yeah I’m good.
Much too long
It's LGBTQ week (apparently)! I think I've heard of this band before. Not familiar, though. I kind of don't have time for this and it's not really "my jam," but I'll try. Cringier than expected, actually. How long is this? I'm going to move on now that I know what this is. It's fine, I understand why critics would praise it. Probably could have been 9 love songs? DNF.
Do you like love songs? If you do then this album is for you. Look I like love songs but only in spańish. The lyrics are pretty good but I don like the guy voice. The beat is good but would I listen to this no but if you want to try something new I would recommend this album.
Are you going through a break-up and want to listen to music that expresses what you are feeling at the moment? 69 Love songs by The magnetic fields would be the perfect album for you. This album literally has 69 love songs you can listen to, they are quick and only say a few lyrics over and over again but maybe that's how you feel. maybe you need a song or an album you can connect with at the moment. I think I would listen to this album while I'm doing homework or something because it feels relaxing. I do recommend this album to anyone.
The idea for this album is bad and so are most of the songs. I didint like the songs they sound repetative. would not recommend 3/10
Nice
Didn't hate it but it's just too much
HAHAHAHAH ok tbh ich find absolutely cuckoo huere funny I don't believe in the sun würkt um einiges ernster und dramatischer es söttet ja auchli theaterlieder sii? eso luegis au ah und finds bis jz na fun I don't wanna get over you singter weird aber hans na gern WISO HET DE BEAT EN TON WIR WENNS EN FÜECHTE FURZ WÄR???? bunny rabbits isch na fun han bis jz eh vill besseri ziit als ich denkt hett?? parades go by erinneret mich ah talking heads (NEGATIV GMEINT) ok jz fangts ah uf de sack gah my sentimental melody isch SCHRECKLICH nothing matters when we're dancing isch en grund zum so schnell tanze wie möglich, nöd willd musig ah sich zum tanze ihladt, sondern eifach dassmer das lied chan ihgnoriere bc nothing matters sweet lovin man isch endlich wiedermal es LIED OK PAUSSSEEEE PART 2 love is like jazz nervt schomal no one will ever love you isch endlich wiedermal es lied id you dont cry ARACH UND WASHINGTON DC ich hass sini stimm bin ich gester in somene krass andere stimmig gsi oder isches rifach normal papa was a rodeo hani eig na gern gha bro I shatter isch unglaublich nervig das isch gad echt schlimm gsi es het würkli nöd schlecht ahgfange, doch disc 2 es het sich jz stetig richtig zwei grabe...mal luege was no passiert bro was isch das chönnts nöd wieder 2 minütigi lieder sii?? hahaha acoustic guitar na funny bro en weirde synthi, chli trümmle und en guy wo tüfer versuecht z singe als ers chan isch keis LIED WAS ISCH DAS JZ yeah oh yeah isch easyy dark und für das hanis na gern de rest halt wieder eifach bö ICH HASSE WENNER GSCHISSE TÜF SINGT ok xylophon track ohni xylophon funny (ussert ich spinn und ghör nüt?) wtf vo allne lieder hend sie sich für zebra entschide als letschts lied?? was isch das??? so unglaublich arsch ich respektiere s projekt ah sich und han eig au hie und daa freud gha aber iwie das als letschts stuck zeigt mier chli, was hend die sich überleit? vlt chammer au behaupte, dass sie extra eifach no es random lied annegfizzt hend als letschts lied because fuck you idem liecht betrachtet findis no funny ok doch keis 1 aber zebra hets gad würkli schier uf es 1 druckt also ja d längi isch natürlich s einte. s andere isch sochli, dass 60% vode tracks nöd würkli lieder sind, sondern sochli ideä oder en joke, wo jz halt eifach au als song zählt, gott weiss wiso. hie und daa, wenn ich mich uf d lyics gachtet han, hanis auno funny gfunde, aber vor allem usere text-perspektive und weniger usere musig-perspektive alles in allem hani de erst drittel rig würkli no solid gfunde, aber ab denn ischs für mich würkli steeiiiiil bergab gange, immer wieder hets moment gha wo ich gfunde han "bro was iiiisch das" weg dem erste ⅓ gits es 2, aber würkli GUCKING ZEBRA
Too long
Not terrible, but definitely not great. And there's waaaaaay too much of it. This is 3rd rate They Might Be Giants or something. Favorite song: a chicken with its head cut off.
Obviously this album is too much. There are some good songs on here, though few and far between. The length and amount of songs brings this down. 2/5 Won’t listen again
I listened to this in 5 parts as it was a real beast, and I must say disk one made me doubt it was worth sticking with. Disk two made me glad I stuck with it with Papa Was a Rodeo being the real turning point, and disk three was honestly great all the way through. 69 songs allows for love to be explored in all angles, and the variety on display here is impressive. Sadly, at the same time, 69 songs is just too many and the quantity over quality experience means that this album failed to achieve "good". Favourite track: Papa Was a Rodeo.
It gets exhausting listening to each disc individually… what makes you think I want to listen to all three back-to-back?
I listened to the first disc, and I think that was more than sufficient to understand this project. “The Book of Love” sounds better when Peter Gabriel sings it.
one off from being my 69th album, what missed opportunity three hours long, this better be the best album i've ever heard i tired asf i had two long ass lectures today and an assignment due tonight and i wanna nap sb, but i started this three hour album first and i hate listening to album in multiple sessions so now i stuck listening to this while doing an assignment i dont want to do. this sucks its not even bad, i just know that it gonna go on like this for another two hours and thats fucking dreadful to think about. I kind of hate how some of the tracks make fun of other genres like jazz and punk, ik its a joke but it feels so lame and unfunny. i gave up, im taking a break i forgot i have to finish this fucccccccccckkk im not even halfway through the second disk. The songs with the girl singing sound like that new cindy lee album if it sucked. Listen to Diamond Jubilee if you want to listen to a good long ass album. Papa was Rodeo feels like a bad dean blunt and johanne robertson song at the end. i don't like this album finally on the last disk yippeeee. i finished my assignment before i finished this album im gonna kms make it fucking end theres still 11 songs left holy shit i cant do it anymore it went to go brush my teeth and i ACCIDENTLY forgot to pause the album a missed like four tracks whoops the albums alright i suppose
it insists upon itself i’ll give it a 2 bc the music itself isn’t half bad, but i will never listen to this album in full again
songs range from ok to boring to corny to some which are legitimately good, but not worth 3hrs of listening for sure. fav track: come back from sf other picks: book of love, cactus where your heart, when my boy walks down the street
Just far too long
An edifying example for the importance of curation. Were this a tight 45 minutes with only the best material from this album, it would be a 5. There are moments, but the bloat is unbearable.
Ain’t nobody got time for allllll this. Good lord. Wish I did and could give an honest review!
Jesus. Over two hours of petulant noise.
I did like "I'm Sorry I Love You" but was that really worth it for 68 others?
Only liked Absolutely cuckoo. Made me stop the challenge.
69 songs…. literally 69
Not a fan
Holy shit this is long and pointless. This is why editing is required when you have an idea. Can't just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks
First of all, obviously way too long! An eclectic mix of indie-rock kinda stuff. Some of it pretty decent, but buried amongst the rest of it... I wouldn't mind revisiting the best bits of it somehow .
I have to say I find this dull. I like the idea, just not the execution. Maybe it's having so many tracks it's diluted it?
69 album reviews • With an album as huge as this one it would be easier to go song by song, so, on a scale from 0 to 1, where 1 is bueno and 0 is no bueno: 011100000110110001110011010010110110100101101100011011000100110101100101 • You 'member tiktok? Some of these songs remind me of those low-effort tiktok songs about the importance of consent or something idk • I once thought it would be a funny performance to write 1089 songs about each album I've heard here, compile them into one album, write a wiki article and then submit it for user albums. You're lucky I don't know shit about making music • If you're gonna write 69 songs about love it better be all kinds of love. I feel underrepresented, there's only 2 songs about necrophilia and just 1 same-sex african-american love song • Nice • You might think that I'm retarded for writing 69 reviews but I'm actually making a point here. Notice how with every review I get lazier and more off-topic because I just need to write something that passes as a review. Not that my regular reviews are any better but... oh fuck off • I really wanted to hate it for it's length but it's not that bad. Filler-filled, yes, but somehow it's not boring, I'm curious about what I will hear next • How hard would it be to notice if one of these songs was AI-generated? A friend of mine made a meme song, just threw some random notes and let the AI finish everything. He also used AI-generated lyrics, and that was what gave it away, but the music itself sounded alright. What I'm getting at, I've seen plenty reviews for other albums saying something like "yeah the music is shit but I can tell it takes a lot of musicianship to make". But let's be real, it's frickiny pop, AI could do it and we wouldn't notice • I usually avoid romantic movies, animes, etc. I mean, they are great, it's easy to squeeze a tear out of me so I like almost every one of them, but they eventually end and I'm back to reality. Reality sucks. At least this album never ends • The longer it goes on the more I like it. As is usually the case with music. Maybe every album should be 3h long? Or even longer? I will try it next time I see a 150th anniversary edition album with 20 hours of extra content • Remember This Song from The Hour Of Bewilderbeast? Well, turns out not only it was a bad idea, they were not even first to do it. Abigail, Belle of Kilronan is literally the same and I can't listen to it. The only song I skipped in the entirety of 1001 (so far) and it was not because it was bad, but because I felt physically unwell listening to it • I feel like I've matured a lot during since the beginning of the project. Something as immature as this album has no place in my heart anymore • I mean, they could've at least made a tl;dl version • Experimental review Experimen evi ntaview perital re rimtal revieExp mentaExperimntal revieental review. Don't know what to call this song if I pretty much called the other ones "low-effort" • It was a 3 at some point, but they didn't quit while they were ahead. Too bad • What do you mean "Baby don't hurt me" is not from this album? I've been waiting for it... • It's crazy to see people commenting "new favorite from the album" under some of these songs. They all sound identical. Or maybe they don't, but the whole experience is so drawn out you can't really tell • Okay maybe not 69, the album's ended, that's all I have
Imagine that The Divine Comedy and Kirsty MacColl got together and gave birth to James McCartney who then made a concept album with Sean Lennon.
When I was 14 we bet with some friends that 3 of us could tell 1000 jokes in 24h. We succeeded, but let me tell you than about 95% of the jokes were pure rubbish and mostly bad situational jokes. This album is the equivalent of this stupid 14 year old bet, done by a professional musician.
It's impressive and there are some real gems in here, but it's WAY too long for a single release. Would've rated higher if it were released in separate parts, maybe.
I really tried to make it all the way through this, but, and this is probably by #1 criticism of the CD, it's WAY, WAY, WAY too long. It's not bad, not exactly my style, whatever. Big picture though, if you're gonna make me sit through 3 hours, you better have a LOT to say. I don't think they clear that bar. The other thing that really stands out here is that despite having a lengthy roster of singers, basically all of them are bad. Male or female, tenor or baritone, they all kind of stink. The music itself alternates between very stripped-down stuff (you could call it garage rock but 1/2 of it is more like guy-with-a-guitar) and super-cheasy way over the top lounge rock. I see the influence. In particular, "Thirteen Tales" almost seems like a sequel. But it's shorter, better, and more fun. I liked "When My Boy Walks Down The Street". That's a cool song. 1 for 69, not bad.
I really enjoyed the quirkiness of 69 Love Songs in the beginning, quite liked the first album, especially Come Back From San Francisco. Some of the songs reminded me of The Shins. Going deeper with the album(s), I wasn't sure what to make of this – it doesn't really feel like a coherent concept despite the title, and there is great variety when it comes to the quality of the songs, too: I think the highlights are nice, but its lowlights are downright annoying. I don't think there's enough quality to justify the 2 hour 52 minute length of the album(s) as there's plenty of fillers between the better songs and it's tend to lose it's edge towards the third album. On another note, I think the algorithm should always assign these longer albums to a Friday – it took me 4 days to finish these 3 albums and it would be easier to get these done on a weekend.
At first, it's an extremely fun concept. However I haven't gone any further than the first part of the album. I also agree that Come Back From San Francisco is a highlight.
The music here is fine, but this is way too long. How am I expected to enjoy listening to this entire thing? Maybe that's the point?
No…just no. I’m only giving this a 2 because there were a few songs that weren’t as terribly boring like the rest.
wow they really weren't lying about the 69 part like i'm impressed, bored but impressed does it actually deserve a 2? no idea i got tiktok attention span but through my speedrun of this album there were ok-ish (more like meh) parts so i'll be generous for once listened to way worse
Reminded me at times of Adam Green but not as funny. M. F., your album's too long!
As the title states; this album contains 69 love songs. I could only sample a few, as the album is much (MUCH) too long. Most of the songs I listened to were nothing to write home about; the record is more of a revue than a proper album. For this the songs might be OK, but not for just listening. 2/5
"69 Love Songs" is an impressive achievement and it takes in so many genres, sounding like The Velvet Underground one minute and Leonard Cohen the next. It's genuinely surprising how much variety it's packed with. But it never rises to be much more than a novelty record, and the short tracks mean that it can never really indulge or focus on a certain style. It's an experiment that doesn't quite work and makes everyone suffer as a result. Like "Jurassic Park."
Are these really love songs? Some of them are breakup songs. Sweet loving man is probably the best of the bunch. It's got 69 something. Love songs would be a stretch. Punk love barely qualifies. Roses... etc... We are the king of the Budoir is truly terrible.
Ain't nobody got time for that!
This should not be on the list. It’s terrible. The dude can’t sing. It’s like listening to my dog wail. It’s disrespectful of my time. Who’s got 3 hours to listen to this garbage. Be better.
23 love songs was enough.
Was hoping the title was more of an innuendo. Had some flashes but way too long
Had high hopes, shouldn't have.
Kind of a slog to get through, didn’t really connect to any of it but there were hints of things I liked here and there
Every single song on this is… fine? Found it overall quite tedious and wasn’t really on board at any point.
This is way too long and so many of the songs don't feel fully finished. Cool idea but meh execution
I anticipated this would be the "nice" kind of 69 love songs, or romantic ballads contemporary to the year 1969, or an album titled "love songs" by the band "69" or some alternate combination. Indeed this is non-figuratively a count of 69 musical tracks of earnest, wholesome serenades. I must disclose I probably gave up with the first third, or 23 songs, but that was my torture threshold.
Too long
This list is becoming more and more demanding every day. Three hours!?
What am I supposed to say here “oh it really comes alive halfway through the second album oh the third disc really has some hidden gems in it.” Get tf outta here with a nearly 3 hour long album comprised mostly of male manipulator music. This album was a huge test of strength for me to meet a piece of art where it’s at, and I tried my hardest. But after a while, these songs did what I’m guessing a lot of deadmau5 songs do for his first time listeners: blended all together. This was a Spotify streaming bloat album well before it’s time though, I’ll give it that
Cool concept album but not really my cup of tea
Absolutely Cuckoo A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off Let’s Pretend We’re Bunny Rabbits Fido, Your Leash Is Too Long My Sentimental Melody Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing Time Enough for Rocking When We’re Old No One Will Ever Love You I Can’t Touch You Anymore The second 3 hour album I’ve gotten. Idk who enjoys an over 1.5 hour album. But I don’t. Wasn’t the worst I suppose. Genuinely surprised I made it to the end without much struggle. Some melodies were quite entertaining and the vocals sounded depressed but in a strangely good way.
This album is nearly 3 hours long … the hubris of this band! While it is mostly pleasant (I feel like I hear this type of music all the time when eating at trending restaurants in Seattle), it’s simply too long to listen to in it’s entirety without skipping. And I can only stand so much ukulele…
too many songs - but pretty good album
3 hours! I don’t even listen to three hours in a row of music I do want to listen to
Full of itself
Too long and arduous to finish . 50 - 55 songs too long Cake ish There's some Len Cohen here too
1 star for the concept and 1 star for not sticking with the original plan of 100 love songs
Decent background music and there is definetly a good album in there somewhere. There was just no reason to make it this long
About one albums worth of quality songs. Ambitious project, but not worth a spot here.
I appreciate the challenge mindset behind this album project, but this was too much. Some songs were okay but they really all blended together and became monotonous. 2.5/5
A lot of songs, some of them are okay
J'aime bien le concept mais trop long là
Too long
Woah, this is some Kanye level shit.
Too long.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. They probably would have been better making 10 good songs rather than 69 meh songs. They have created a talking point but thats it.
Before Spotify was a thing these guys nailed the 'slightly mediocre love songs' playlist. The better moments were well hidden in the massive amounts of self-indulgent nonsense but I'm still not sure there's a decent album's worth hiding in here
When it says 69 Love Songs on the tin, I wasn't expecting literally 2 hours 45 minutes worth of songs. To give a reasonable review of this album it'd need to be listened to in a few instalments, which I doubt I'd want to put the effort in for. From the initial one-off listen, it's an alright 3-side album, giving me Lou Reed vibes, quite humorous in places, tiresome in others, nothing I disliked, but equally who would love a chicken with its head cut off? 2.5
Muy extenso. No es demasiado de mi agrado.
This felt like the worst kind of homework. Cute at times, with some variety, but a slog. Like others have mentioned, they should have focused their attention on 10-12 really good ones instead of 69 mediocre ones. 2/5
I just can’t. 3 hours is too much, and I don’t love “indie” music in the best of times. It wasn’t awful, there were some toe tappers, but it’s just too much.
I can appreciate the ambition and commitment to the bit. I did not like one song on this album though
ура осилила один раз и СРАЗУ узнала первую песню когда пошёл на второй. в среднем есть интересные идеи и музыка, но вокал совсем не для меня, это какой-то Том Петти / Леонард Коэн уровень завывания
Realistically I will not be listening to all 3 hours of this.
this is too many love songs
Some of this is good. Some of this is bad. But it's 3 hours long. Sorry
I’m not going to listen to this entire album out of principle. Very few artists will earn my attention for three discs, and a sub-par, boredom-inducing caterwauler is not going to make the cut. Two stars.
69 songs on 1 album? Must be grindcore. It isn't? Pas.
I was extremely disappointed that I had to listen to almost 3 hours of this album, which consists of 3 disks. It wasn't THAT bad, but would've enjoyed it just as much if it was only 15 minutes long. Kinda chill, it's nice that the songs were relatively short. Definitely very weird at times, and although I was going to rate it 1 star, it kind of made me not hate it too much after bonding with the album for almost 3 hours...
Another one that I’ll stop after disc 1. The cover of Book of Love is great as Izzy says. The rest, a bit subpar Divine Comedy.
Songs we ok but way too long
Quantity over quality. Honestly, not gonna listen to all of these. Low effort creativity and musicianship. Feels like a stunt album just to use "Love" and "69" hyuk, hyuk.
I almost admire the audacity to release a 3 hour album of love songs. By my ratings system, I should give this a 1 because I didn't finish it. I only got through about 40 songs. Most are generic nothing songs and it was all blending by the time I called it quits. There are a couple in here that I actually recognized and enjoyed, but the rest was forgettable. I would hardly call this mandatory listening.
It's like Our Gang meets painfully ironic ennui. Trying way too hard to be clever and original and not really pulling it off for me. Maybe a third of these songs I'd want to hear again, but not for a while.
Music for a middle school drama club. And way too much of it. Barely listenable for me. Bright spot - Sweet Lovin' Man Might be 10 or 12 decent songs in here, but easy to miss amongst the nonsense
What I listened to was fine, but this was just too long to commit to without it being truly exceptional.
69 Love Songs is one love song too many. The song that should have been omitted is Love Is Like Jazz, but ya can’t really have an album about love songs titled 68 Love Songs so ya might as well leave it in. It’s just a bad song, or bad jazz, or both. Overall, I like the album and the concept. A Chicken With It’s Head Cut Off, Let’s Pretend We’re Bunny Rabbits, and Papa Was a Rodeo are among the better songs. Album runs a little long for one listening session, no kidding. (2.2*s)
What a bloated, pretentious collection of average Indie rock. Maybe there are some good or very good of songs but they are lost within all the mediocrity.
How about 10 love songs next time?
Idk how to rate this. I guess I like the intention and context of this record but I could never listen to it again.
Quirky and funny. Every song is different but same theme and concept throughout. Never something I’d revisit.
One full extra star for Book of Love
Meh. Way too long, did not finish.
We’ve had two classic albums by two of the biggest and most influential artists of the period. Now this.
I made it through 2/3s of this to realize that I don’t need to spend another hour on it. Now, a few songs are good without a doubt. But is this a good listening experience as an album? Absolutely not. And some songs are outright bad and/or simply fillers. I can understand that it’s a fun project to put together for yourself, but to write 69 love songs for the sake of it doesn’t really cut the mustard for me as an album.
Too long, seemed amateurish.
2.5. Funny project. Some good songs, a lot of ok songs, but also a lot of stinkers
The band members can’t seriously think all of these songs are good? Some of them are so close to being good songs, maybe if they’d cut out a majority of the songs and focused on these few this would be a fantastic indie album. As it is, it stinks.
This is a 4 star album, less 1 star for stretching it to 3 disks and less another star for stretching it to 2 disks. They who live by the disk die by the disk.
69 love songs but nary a one about 69
3 hours of love songs? How about no. It only gets a 2nd star because I'm feeling nice for putting in the effort.
Ok, c'était vraiment trop long...
i mean i guess some songs are okay but seriously what do you want from me. its not even that impressive of a feat to make this large of an album, it was 1999 producing music was easy at this point.
Too many sub par songs
The water drop torture is a method of torture consisting of tying a condemned person immobile to a board. From then on, at regular intervals, a drop of water fell on his forehead. Lack of sleep and repetition wear down the subject's resistance. This results in a psychological alteration of the victim, who ends up going crazy.
A bit droning, not too interesting
Certainly a variety
Unique indie sound. It's a mood
Was ok but just way too long. I only got through about half of it before I was done
It's almost impossible to try to appraise in the way we've been doing so because of the length and diversity of the content, and it really does come across at times as if the inspiration for putting this work together was to receive acclaim for exactly that, rather than because of the music. Some of the songs are really nice, some of them are pretty, some quirky, there's cross-genre stuff, there's stripped back stuff, there's a lot going on. The femle vocals are infinitely more tolerable than Merritt's (my favourite songs are those ones, No One Will Ever Love You, Come Back From San Francisco, Acoustic Guitar), which I find annoying most of the time, although it works on the most stripped back songs like The Book of Love and Meaningless and Nothing Matters When We're Dancing. If I was going to give this a 3 because of everything going on and settling in the middle, I'm dropping it to a 2 because it is far, far, far too long and doesn't hit enough highs to remotely justify it.
Listened to Vol1, that was enough
This album overstays its welcome. It has some decent tracks, especially the Book of Love, which is its only saving grace in my opinion and raises it to a 2 instead of a 1. The rest is just drivel.
boring but it has the song from the scrubs finale
the magnetic fields' 69 love songs went in almost every direction, and they tried to tackle too much within one album. yes, it's full of creativity, but it lacks so much cohesiveness. i thought i understood this album with its quick turns from indie to pop to electronic, but then some celtic sounds came out of nowhere. i'm annoyed i had to listen to such an unnecessarily long album, and i didn't want to even like this album. i suppose when you create 69 songs, odds are some of them can be hits. the lyrics didn't stand out at all. it figures with so many songs that the creative songwriting juice would run out. having different lead vocalists help switch things up in this three CD album. with the lead vocalist, i found myself reminded of leonard cohen often with that raspy voice.
Well, this was every bit as exhausting as I thought it would be. From a creative expression perspective, I can absolutely appreciate the creative endeavor of making 69 love songs, all of which seem to be short poems narrating the various aspects of love. The compositions are all fairly unique, but also seem to be fairly subdued, if not simplistic, almost as if to convey this idea of modern minstrel music. But being forced to LISTEN to 3 hours of this is an absolute chore.
random 1-2 minuutin pituisia kappaleita spämmitty oikeiden biisien keskelle.. koska pitää olla 69 konsepti, mutuaalinen suuseksi asentoesque album... hyviä pätkiä löytyy mutta niitä täytyy suurennuslasilla pyynätä kolmen tunnin mörkäleestä, ei kiitos.......vihaan kaikkia tällä sivustolla, myös itseäni. (i shat)ter
Almost 3 hours Long album?! It has some weird songs
Far too long!
Thoughts before listening: This comes up a lot on best albums lists but I have never listened. I think that's mainly cause 69 songs is A LOT of songs and it just seems like a daunting task. Plus I have heard bits and pieces of the album and I don't really like what I've heard. Review: Wow, right out the gate this album has some really nice songs on it. Wonderful melodies and super catchy pop rock songs. Stylistically this is lo fi pop rock with a bunch of different influences on the songs: some remind me of the Smiths, some sound like Irish folk songs, there are some country rock tunes and some that jse electronic inspired instrumentation. There are definitely too many songs, and a lot of this feels like half assed songs thrown together to meet the silly 69 tracks concept. The highs are very high, but the lows are something I'd never go back to. Also, I don't have time for nearly 3 hours of music...I tried to listen all the way through, but once I realized there are some jokey throwaways on here I started skipping a lot. I tried to cheat a bit and looked up best of lists to help pick and choose tracks, but there is very little consensus. Tracks that were at the top of one list would be at the bottom of others. That certainly speaks to just how polarizing this album can be as well as the stylistic variation throughout. There are definitely highlights here: I Don't Believe in the Sun, All My Little Worlds, The One You Really Love, When My Boy Walks Down the Street, Long Forgotten Fairytale, Papa Was a Rodeo, Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side, and Death of Ferdinand de Saussure. Overall this is way too hit or miss to get a good score from me, although I will happily revisit the songs above that I added to the playlist.
The length affects this album greatly. Fair play making that many songs for one album though, even if most are garbage.
I did it, I did it! All 69, all 2.5+ hours. Am I better for it? Not really. The songs are mediocre, which made me kind of mad. What hubris to put out almost three hours of mediocrity! There were great moments and ultimately I wish this was boiled down to ten stellar songs. As it is, a harsh rating for the sheer audacity of this project!
This is like an MFA thesis. Quite an accomplishment, but that doesn't mean it's any good. I'll be more charitable than I was initially thinking - there's more than a decent album among these "69 Ideas for Love Songs in Various Stages of Final Draft." Maybe a decent double album. But it's quite a bit too much as 69. Also, the ABCB rhyme scheme in 50+ of them is a big part of overstaying the welcome.
And then the doorbell rang and the trance was broken. Got just about half way. Quite a scatterbrain collection. This is car journey stuff at best where one needs something light heading up the motorway. As it is so long one might even create a playlist from it picking a select bunch of tunes. That seems the best option for repeated plays.
Distinctly average with some very uninspiring lyrics, simplistic to a fault
Well, not my idea of Love Songs apparently. I didn't like the style , the simplicity, and the vocal, just terribly not my type of music. I tried to listen to at least 10 songs, to make an opinion (out of 69, which is actually unbelievable), but it was quite repetitive, so no reason to listen to it in whole. Bad match.
69 songs is a lot. I nearly didn't even attempt it but I swore I'd listen to all these albums. I didn't enjoy it 95% of the time, and as you'd expect it is massively quantity over quality... but it's not the worst thing i've heard on this list - and it blows my mind that nearly 3 hours later I'm willing to give more than 1 star
I got about 20 songs in. Tedious. I'm terrible at music so I wouldn't even be able to write one of these songs admittedly, but I can't help but feel any musician who's half decent could knock up a similar set of 69 unfleshed out ideas within 24 hours. How is this even anywhere near the 1001 list.
