krautrock is so cool
Fantastic listen. I need to dive into their whole catalog now.
Love the first two tracks and thought this could be an all timer. It fades a lot but still great- love those .
Very cool album. The first half is really calm, serene even, with beautifully soft electronic sounds. The second half is a much louder counterpart, but it is a cool combination and does not bother me in the slightest.
Pretty Little romp, the vocals are a bit strange, feel a little misplaced.
We've had a few ambient/instrumental albums recently and I've been enjoying it. This was a fun album the whole way through. It was good to have on in the background, but also grabbed my attention at times. 7/10
Love it when I'm educated by an album choice. Birth of metronomic beat. Really enjoyed this, hasn't dated at all, would definitely not say a 1975 album.
Nice to play as background music
This was a vibe
This was an unexpected pleasure. Had some solid music
Is the Krautrock in the room with us right now?
Never enough NEU!
Will forever and always make me think of Andrew. Makes me feel all the good feels.
Liked it
Really interesting Really wonderful It feels like every song could be written by a different person in a wonderful way. It all sounds different but under the same blanket I can hear things that it's massively inspired from the 70s til now Very good
רוק מאוד מעניין. שיר מועדף - Seeland
Happy 50 years to this album! The album starts with its weakest track, so stick to it for a bit longer before judging. Overall musically this album is very solid, diverse, well crafted and made me curious about the band and their other works. I don't like the combination of punk and ambient - I understand this is kind of experimentality, but 50 years later of modern music development, I prefer more cohesive listening experiences. I don't mind variety, but punk+ambient is a bit much. For being a 50 year old album that still sounds relevant and interesting this is almost a 5, but enough songs don't land that it's a 4. But this is definitely the kind of musical discoveries I'm here for.
This, particularly the more ambient side one, is motorik at its most accessible. Liking this a lot.
Loved it. Haven't listened to much Krautrock, but I loved this.
Love the instrumentals. Don't like the vocals.
i like it i like it
Hmm, surprising. How beautiful.
I really enjoy the CAN so figured this would be right up my alley, and was right. I especially love the ambient portions and how low they put the vocals in the mix. No moments that wowed me per say but a great and cozy background listen. 3.5/5 - > 4/5
Neu! 75 is a forward thinking ambient album with a punk edge to it. I'm more drawn to the excellent ambient sections over the punk bits, but it's overall an great project. Glad I gave another listen to it; curious to go back through the rest of their catalogue. *Heard before
I don’t know a lot about Kraut Rock outside of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze. This album was a great surprise, I enjoyed it far more than I would have imagined. Weird blend of ambient and psychedelic rock, sometimes bordering on drone music. I loved the first part of the album, the soundscapes were very trippy (although LSD SHOULD have been provided to complete the experience), and more pleasing to the ears than Kraftwerk. The second part of the album was... surprising at first, but it slowly grew on me, and I ended up enjoying its tortured tone. Overall a nice effort, I’m glad to have discovered Neu. I followed up with their first and second albums, which I probably liked even more than this one (especially the first one, which is extremey hypnotic and meditative). I'll give the album a 3*, and add one star for the rest of their (sadly underrated) discography. 6+1/10
A fascinating split personality of an album — half meditative Krautrock soundscapes, half proto-punk energy — that shows why 𝘕𝘌𝘜! ’𝟩𝟧 is such an enduring classic.
++: Isi, Leb' Wohl, Hero, E. Musik, After Eight +: Seeland 9,4/10
I liked this one a lot, a lot of ambient, then some punk. Kind of an interesting mix
Better than expected
Silly german music for doing homework to
I really enjoyed this album / double album by two former Kraftwerk guys. The Michael Rother-driven, ambient side one was the better of the two. Isi had some really great synth beats layered over elegant & soft keyboard notes. Seeland brought in more guitar and bass to slice through the ambience - great mix. Leb Wohl went back to keyboards as the main instrument alongside the ambient noises and it was really soothing; probably could've done without the vocals though. The Klaus Dinger-driven, proto punk side two had its moments but was a bit inconsistent. In Hero, I felt like I was listening to Public Image Ltd. (but apparently it's the other way around, with John Lydon drawing inspiration from this song). It was good even if it went on a bit long. After Eight had a similar vibe - solid but a bit repetitive. It was E-Musik that was a bit out of place - it had a harder edge guitar or bass line to start, but deep down it was more ambient than anything else. I didn't mind it, but it should've been on side one. All in all though, a solid album in my opinion. Nice surprise.
4.5
So I wouldn't recommend listening to this when you're fighting for your life in the airport with jet lag. However I still enjoy it even though it made me thoroughly tired.
Why on earth did it take 41 years plus this generator to finally dig into krautrock? This album slaps! I LOVE motorik rhythms. It's all so fun and groovy and hypnotizing. Big big fan of what's going on here, will definitely be exploring more from Neu! and the genre at large.
Also better than I thought it was gonna be. Listening on good headphones helps.
Woah, I wasn't expecting this! A quality collection that sounds much more modern than it is. I was impressed with the overall experimental chill jive from this album, which shifted to something a little more upbeat & alternative towards the end. I've added Neu! to my list of artists to look further into in the future.
I didn't hate this, will give it a second go for sure.
Really enjoyable listen - ambient psych rock, with some more proto-punk stuff in the back end. Like. Like a lot.
I especially like the quiet instrumentals that are similar to Keith Jarrett and Brian Eno. There are some other fine krautrock numbers on the album as well. I find this mechanical-sounding music to be very emotional.
das war Neu! für mich .. der erste track im stil von kraftwerk ist toll, der rest schnell durchgeskippt.
Took a couple of listens but really like the album. Something I’ll save for taking some edibles and watching nature or something
3.5 - Good
Had never heard of them before, but clearly so influential! Listening to this, I couldn’t believe it was from 1975.
Yeaaaaaa 4/5
Was not expecting to love this. Not to sound like a Zoomer but if this were just a bit shorter, it would have been perfect.
4 out of 5. Not sure what some people meant about the second half of this album being bad. Pretty good overall.
Thought this was going to be rubbish but it was actually pretty enjoyable. A very varied selection of sonic exploration ranging from sounding like movie sound tracks, to out there rock songs. It also does not out stay it's welcome.
I loved the instrument tracks, less keen on the singing but I saved some of them for chill listening.
4/5
I was complaining to Ian a week or two ago that it’d been awhile before we were given an album I was excited to listen to. I was excited to listen and liked it quite a bit.
Easy listening
Full of texture and energy. Begging for more listening
I have never heard this before, it was really interesting, something I wasn't expecting. It has a kind of new age vibe and some of the songs are really ethereal and dreamy. Half of the songs are really pop rockish though so it's a nice variety. I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would.
Influential, strange, intriguing.
Germany is one of those countries with such an interesting musical history that it's kind of hard to represent everything. As far as the Krautrock scene is concerned, Neu! is definitely a top name in the game. These guys may not have been huge in their time, but their influence can be seen in a number of legendary bands and artists throughout the world, so they probably belong here. This album also probably belongs here because it's good. I like Neu! 75. It's cool. Notably, the album is split into two halves that are not super clear if you listen blind but are pretty clear once you learn that they're separated by each of the two main members' goals. That's neat. It's kind of like a more cohesive Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in that way and in literally no other. Either way, whether the song is focused on Michael Rother's ambient ambitions or the more rock-focused ideals of Klaus Dinger, the music is sure to be good. I like the album. The singing that's sometimes present is definitely German. It works pretty well for the latter half of the album. I do really like the more chill vibes of the first half though, with "ISI" being the highlight there. I'd say "Hero" is probably where the second half reaches its peak. The few bits of lyrics in the album make sense to me. The vibes are cool and varied. This is just an interesting album. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Solid 4/5.
I enjoyed this album a lot, liked some of the rhythmic repitition that they had goin, and it's kind of nice to have a short album in terms of number of songs, but a longer album in terms of length. I'd come back to this
Imagine if Brian Eno turned into the German Sex Pistols when he gets angry. A bit schizophrenic, but I enjoyed both sides. I might've enjoyed it more if the two distinct styles were integrated rather than being a shift half way through.
Starts off all dreamy ambient stuff in the first half, then "Hero" comes on and jolts you awake and it becomes a whole different album.
Metronomic beats and ambience abound on this Krautrock classic. Neu had some good moments but it can be a bit samey after awhile
New (to me) artist (or should I say NEU!?) and I enjoyed it quite a bit!
Moody, mostly interesting though each track runs a longer than I need it to. The fact that I wanted to listen to it again right away is always a good sign.
May 25, 2025 Album #630: Neu! 75 by Neu! Genre: Krautrock, Kosmische Musik, Experimental Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Proto-Punk I was a bit surprised when I first listened to this. West German Krautrock duo *Neu!*’s third album, *Neu! 75*, is an album with elements of rock, ambient music, and experimentation. The album is split into two parts, Side A led by Micheal Rother and Side B led by Klaus Dinger. Rother’s side is marked by expansive synths, and ambient works. Rother’s side opens up with the piano-lead opener to the album *Isi*. Its hypnotic drumming paired with its backing synths makes for a nice and calming atmosphere. *Seeland* is an extended and immersive ambient-like song that brims with atmosphere. Its hypnotic synth work, drumming, and guitar work are great. Like in *Isi*, this song offers a calming and relaxed soundscape which I adore. *Leb’ wohl* is one of the longest songs on the album, and it’s an ambient experience with its relaxed piano and synths, Dinger’s hazy and reverb soaked vocals, and the sounds of waves in the background of the track. Side A is the side I prefer by a wide margin. With that said, I don’t think that I find Side B the most appealing. It’s much more energetic than Side A, and very much sounds like early punk. I’m not entirely sure how to feel about *Hero* and *E-Musik* though. They’re nice but they can get to be a bit monotonous, though I find the final minutes of *E-Musik* to be interesting at least. The closer of the album, *After Eight*, makes for an energetic closer with its guitar and hypnotic drums. With that said, even if I find that this album has its flaws, I’m still glad to have checked it out. If you like an album with nice atmosphere, I recommend checking this out, it’s a nice time. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, Decent 7 Favorite Tracks: Isi, Seeland, Leb’ wohl, After Eight https://youtu.be/oO7w90YG3Rg?si=-9y40ixCVggxrQJa https://youtu.be/VfLsCvLfFiI?si=8fJIyKsfrrg8z6Um https://youtu.be/IfVHbc7LSic?si=yWNl_rUHHpQ_bc8p
4.5
I could have this on repeat.
Oddly cool. Oddly relaxing for the most part.
Relaxing and cool
We’re visiting Germany with the last couple of albums. Great visit with this album!
A solid ambient rock album. It's mesmerizing, draws you in. Would listen again for sure.
Fantastic album.
Not what I expected when I read Krautrock. The progression of the composition was nicely done, not surprising of Kraftwerk alumni.
We’ve discussed before that krautrock might be the most pointless genre tag. However there’s loads under that label that slaps, and this is another one to add to the pile.
3.6 - Pleasant
This album was completely NEU to me and after a couple times through I'm feeling like I'll need several more to really form a strong opinion. After two times through I'm pretty high on it though. I read that these two guys couldn't agree on a direction - the ambient style or rock so they split the album. I enjoyed both sides and although the second half is very different I think there is enough of a throughline to make it work. I may prefer the front half. The sound quality stands out throughout. Some good rocking on the second half but slightly less interesting than the front, probably because of my familiarity with rock.
Track 2 and 3 are perfect for moments when you just want to be sad and think
The wave sounds notwithstanding, tho even those I'm inclined to embrace, there's something unforgivingly real and reliably peaceful w/ this record. It doesn't blow you away, but then again I'm not so sure that it's supposed to - and one way or another, you learn to speak 'bye, bye' into existence, okay w/ quieter steps into spaces larger than yourself. That's until 'Hero' (David Bowie?) comes on and an unexpected jolt of energy provides the backbone of a moving display of confidence and wit: 'And you're just another hero trying to lose your fight.' After that, the music continues to be playful and driving, ethereal only in moments, concluding w/ a cry for true nurturance: '... help me through the night / Help me see the sun / help me to get up.'
Chill, relaxing , sounds surprisingly modern.
Surprising! Absolutely loved mellow stuff, the higher tempo stuff not so much and bringing it down to four stars
Classic Krautrock that influenced so many of the 80/90s bands. It remains a classic
A bit of a slow burner, but I liked it.
I had a difficult morning with my toddler and this was very calming for me. I’ve never heard of Neu and I probably won’t listen again unless the generator tells me to, but this made a bad day better.
Krautrock! Love it!
This is indeed neu to me! I thought Kraurock was heavy a la Ramstein. Really enjoyed this and looking forward to discovering more from Neu.
I was expecting some pretty wacky krautrock like Can but it started very pleasant and chilled out on the first half. The first half sets the tone and builds a nice atmosphere The second half picks up the pace and is much more abrasive. Hero is quite punky (it seems it was pretty influential), whilst E-Musik is very driving and tight until it transitions into a somewhat eery close with wind and what sounds like somebody hitting something in the distance over some sparse piano. After Eight is something of a release after tension has built through the album, another rough around the edges punky tune Ordinarily I favour noisy and abrasive sounds but I think I actually prefer the first half. The second half maybe doesn't feel fully formed, like there was some tweaking that could've been done to bring those songs up a notch. My only gripe with the first half is Leb Wohl felt a little bit repetitive since it's centred mostly around the same 2 piano chords and goes for 9 minutes, but it's still a nice song Really enjoyed this Highlights: Seeland, Isi, E-Musik
Ooh, early punk I'd not heard of! Nice
How nice that the gems of Krautrock appear in this list from time to time. I'm always amazed by the innovative power that this German music scene had back then. Unfortunately, I was still too young at the time to really appreciate this music and immerse myself in it. I only found this access later. The album is great and I enjoyed listening to it. But it's not one of my favorites of the genre. 4/5
I found this interesting and will need to revisit it later.
Similar to Kraftwerk, maybe a little more “rock” at times, didn’t really care for the vocals too much, but still pretty great
I very much enjoyed this album. I'm profoundly grateful for the cool things happening in Germany in the early and mid 70s, since they influenced Eno, Bowie and everything wonderful and "new wave" after that. This almost sounds post-punk, despite being pre-punk. Whilst I didn't love the vocals, 'twas sehr gut.
most hippies are so horrible but these hippies are all right
First song: “This is rad. I’m gonna love this.” Second song: “Ok, not as good as the first, but I’m still into it.” Third song: “This is a nice interlude-y kinda song… but it’s 9 minutes long??” Fourth song: “Ok now we’re talking, I’m into this… wait, it’s still going?” Fifth song: “Oh so this is what we’re gonna do again? A meandering 7 minutes followed by an unnecessarily long outro of… not really anything?” Sixth song: “Ok, I’m back. This is awesome.” Listen, I’m a prog fan, so I’m not afraid of long songs. But if you’re gonna write a 9 minute song, at least switch it up a little bit. Yet, all that aside… I still loved it. If it was just a tiny bit less self indulgent, this would have been an instant favorite.
I owe this another listen as I had this on in the car with two passengers, but I liked what I heard.
This was an awesome listen. I never knew Kraftwerk had a fracture that led to this side band. The intro track's piano opening that works into a lot more complexity is a great way to start an album. This felt really experimental for anyone but especially for '75. I could see me telling people to check this out. It's not a perfect album but most albums need more of what makes this work. I feel like there's a fair amount of 5 star work here but not all the tracks work at the same level. Great one to have on the list.
I really enjoyed that! The first 3 tracks felt quite meditative, with track 2 ‘Seeland’ being a standout. The 2nd half of the album saw the tempo lift which stopped it getting too samey. A high 3 / low 4.
Never heard of this group or album. It was an interesting ride. Very eclectic mix of art-pop/rock/krautrock with detours into Eno-style ambient music. Not sure I'd listen to this all that frequently, but I didn't mind it. Given that they influenced the Sex Pistols and Bowie, it's hard to argue against the significance of the album, even if it is new to me. 4/5
Think i've underrated this in the past from the couple times i've heard it, it's super fun, especially the 2nd half where they up the tempo. Nice to see some interesting krautrock stuff represented in this list, only other I can remember so far was the Faust album.
I love Klaus Dinger so much. Michael Rother, maybe more.
The vocals on some track are annoying, but I really like the groove
This is the first I've heard of the group NEU! From what I gather, they were a krautrock band, which is to say they are a German experimental rock band. The primary members were Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, who formed the group after departing Kraftwerk early on. Their third album NEU! 75 would be last before disbanding followed by a brief reunion in the mid-'80s. Now for the fun part - NEU! 75 is one of those albums where it is apparent that the band began to fall apart because the album is divided into two styles. Side one is the more ambient, keyboard-driven work that Rother wanted to pursue, whereas side two is the more aggressive, rock-influenced jams that Dinger wished to pursue. To be fair, I consider both sides to sound well-executed. The impeccable atmosphere of the keyboards combined with the spare guitar lines and soft percussion of side one is just as potent as the crunchy guitar riffs over Dinger's sneering vocals and punching 4/4 beat of side two. My only gripes with this album are the tonal clash between both sides where one doesn't lead into the other as well, and the lyrics of side two as Dinger struggled to find the words to vent out his frustrations. Despite the obvious division in creative focus between our two main members, NEU! managed to put out one final album that is still sonically pleasing and innovative for the time. I expect this album to grow on me, but for now, it gets a solid recommendation.
Robot punks back when Daft Punk were still blueprints on a 5¼-inch floppy disk somewhere in France.
Super funky berlin rock. Reminds me of cold war era
Really promising start; ISI is great ambient rock, good pianos, and drums. The guitar on seeland is amazing, great bass, and great atmosphere. Great outside atmosphere, piano on Leb’ wohl. Interesting vocals on Hero, ok instrumental, overall I didn’t really like the song. E-Musik is repetitive and the sound quality is weird, pretty decent tho; nice groove. Interesting section at the end, with the slowed down voice. Really interesting choice for the ending track. Overall, very ambient and atmospheric rock album, initial listen: 8/10 or 4/5
Hat mich aber auch an Gabe von "The Office" erinnert: Imagine one instant of a song expanded to be the size of the universe.
Enjoyed the album, seemed to start softer and ended more industrial. An interesting journey.
I like it. The melody is beautiful and I always love when the songs have more pure instrumental parts and some room for experiment. This is exactly what I'm looking for on this website. Simple enjoyment, I would give it a solid 4/5.
Ein elektronisch experimentelles Juwel. Wer das Album hört, weiß woher das „New“ in New Order kommt. Gern mal wieder Ihr Haudegen aus Ddorf.
Good shit
A right little gem from this challenge. No expectations going in but a really good bit of krautrock that I’ll definitely return to
Ambient? Experimental? Proto-Punk? Proto-Chill Wave? Definitely unique. Not familiar at all with the group Neu! and beyond Kraftwerk I'm not familiar with much German progressive/new wave music. Really, it sounded like some people got into a studio and had some fun making some music. It also made an hour of work go by more quickly. Definitely worth a listen.
The last time I talked about krautrock is technically when I was covering a solo album from one of Can’s members. But that didn’t really represent the best aspects of the genre to me. So the last time I spoke about something krautrock related that I really enjoyed was the titular fourth album from Faust, whose existence is basically the genesis of the genre itself. I haven’t gone back to give that record another listen recently, but I’m always down to hear more krautrock. NEU! is a band who also had a pretty huge impact on the genre. Except on this album, they take a less electronic drone and post-rock approach, and more focus on ambient psychedelic music. This can be split into two halves. The first, which covers track one through three, lean way more on the ambient stuff. It’s incredibly meditative and entrancing, and also entirely instrumental. Most of the album is, really. They’re super chill songs, and it’s definitely a cool sound. The latter half, on the other hand, delves into what could possibly be considered proto-punk. This was after some of early punk music’s most important albums had come out. But punk was still very juvenile and experimental. And that can be seen here. The last three songs are more intense in execution for sure. But they still maintain that repetitive feeling. Maybe to their own fault at some points, as E-Musik is too long for how little is really going on. I don’t think this tackles how weird this genre can be in as effective of a way as Faust’s album did, but it’s still enjoyable. Rating: 7/10
Loved it on my first listen. Not quite as much on the subsequent ones but still a great album
This is an interesting album that I once again do not want to talk about at length. I feel the need to write a review for everything, but sometimes I don’t want to.
The dichotomy between the two sides is really interesting. As a fan of both ambient and krautrock, I'm a fan of both. I can definitely feel the influence of this album on a lot of music I love.
This isn’t as high energy as I remember some of their stuff being but it’s pretty chill and quite interesting.
Short but enjoyable
Un très bon album, je ne m'attendais pas ça à ce style de progressif/psychédélique. Il y a vraiment une ambiance propre. Quelques moments un peu trop doux à mon goût, mais globalement une belle surprise. 9/10
Yes :) pleasant surprise - really enjoyed this and never heard before
This was a very interesting surprise. Can tell they've had an influence on many artists. Just on the first track alone I can hear the influence on Public Service Broadcasting, The Horrors, and David Holmes to name but a few. Other tracks have clearly had an influence on the early UK punk scene. Good though that is, I'm giving it 4 out of 5 because I feel it's a collection of ideas rather than a collection of songs.
Very influential album. They were defining the sound of post punk before punk music ever really took off. I really enjoyed the ambient and moody tracks. The more straightforward punk/Velvet Underground sounding tracks were ok. Mid 4.
Wasn’t sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it
Highlights: ISI, Hero. In a nutshell: cosmic and ambient krautrock. Mellow and hypnotic. It could be argued that the roots of the ambient genre can be found here in NEU! 75. Mainly in "Seeland" and "Leb' wohl". Brian Eno is credited for inventing the term "ambient" but Eno didn't record his first experiment in ambient music- Another Green World- until July 1975. Neu! 75 was released in February of the same year. I like Air and early Kraftwerk, so this was a winner for me. Overall: 8/10
Lovely ambient-like post punk - it packs a punch and it’s soothing at the same time - and well balanced and paced album.
This was wild and unexpected.
this was a surprisingly cool listen!! never heard of these guys before but this album was kind of a mix of jazz, jam, psychedelia, and british. the best parts of the album were the non-british parts when they didn’t bother with lyrics and cared more for cultivating the atmosphere
Some E-Musik right here. But don’t listen to this until it’s After Eight.
"Neu! 75" is the third studio album by German krautrock band Neu! Krautrock, kosmische music, experimental rock, pyschedelic rock and proto-punk are the Wiki-listed genres. I'll just go with those. Neu! regrouped after bandmembers and former Kraftwerk bandmembers Michael Rother (electric guitar, bass, keyboards and vocals) and Klaus Dinger (drums, electric guitar, vocals) compromised their musical styles. Side one is Rother's ambient music and side two is Dinger's most aggressive and rock influenced music. "Isi" begins side one. It's an instrumental. Piano, drums and happy. The guitar comes in and this sounds like "A Ghost is Born"-era Wilco. Not a bad thing. "Seeland" has a more forward guitar. Anytime I hear water, it falls in the ambient genre and this is that. "Leb's Wohl" has a slow piano and drum beat. There's wave sounds, actual vocals and ends side one. Hey, we got rock starting with "Hero." Searing guitar, bass and drums. A guy, it must be Dinger, screaming. There's a punk attitude. "E. Musik" adds keyboards and a droning sound to a rock music base. Now, this sounds like Kraftwerk doing rock. The album ends with their most rockin' song in "After Eight." A melodic, driving guitar. Hypnotic, repetitive. Dinger screaming again. Layered guitars. I hear a number of bands. The music sounds like Wire and the vocals like Johnny Lydon in PiL. This is definitely an album of two sides; they both work for me. The first side is mostly instrumental and ambient. It has a distinct German sound. I was was also reminded of Brian Eno's music. The second side turns on the rock; it's has a punk and even post-punk edge. Wire, David Bowie came to mind. Overall, a very good album with most people at least liking the second, rockin' side.
I really liked this album. I was expecting Kraftwerk, but I got a precursor to M83, Mogwai, and other post-rock acts. I was surprised at the punk vocals towards the end and the transition, but it all still felt like it fit and was all good. I definitely will be listening to more of their albums.
Fun and weird. The second to last track was pretty boring though. 4/5
German insanity, largely instrumental, influential without being enjoyable, could have scored anything - depending on how much time I had to engage with the work. Luckily for them (if they care) I had time to listen until it started (almost) making sense; so I fell for the madness of it all
A cooler-than-me pal hipped me to these guys (and this record) way back when. I was ready for it then, I am now. I love the A/B split here, it really goes wilder than a person would expect. Great creative stuff, a solid and satisfying record.
Not too bad! I had not heard of them and from the name expected something more industrial, but it had a lot of piano and mellow music.
Listened to this while reading the rulebook to The Isofarian Guard. I really enjoyed this album. The first 3 more ambient tracks were still full of unexpected moments, and that steady motorik beat. The second three tracks, though more "aggressive," still felt like they belonged. I'm sure there are other Neu album on this list, and I look forward to when they pop up!
Never heard of this, but I like it!
Está bueno. La primera mitad algo rara, como de película ochentera de fantasía, pero de la mitad para adelante el asunto cambia y está potente.
nice
very good background music
Reminds me of OMD which is not a bad thing at all.
Its crazy how a well crafted instrumental part of an album can conjure so many images out of your imagination. I sat and listened to this and went on a journey, as weird as that sounds. A lot of tracks elicit emotion, I found Seeland did this best. A nice gradual rise through the song, like someone on a lone drive across the country.
A fun chill album. Not at all what I was expecting. Im a softie for this kind of music
Surprisingly good. Heavily instrumental, some pieces are reminiscent of the Minecraft soundtrack, others more of jam. Fascinating stuff.
Wow! No expectations going in and this was amazing! Really cool instrumental (mostly) rock from a band I’d never heard of. Every song was moody and conveyed an emotion or feeling pretty well. There were some cool grooves. What lyrics there were, I didn’t understand, and I honestly couldn’t tell you if they added or subtracted from the experience. But overall though, this was a great record and I’d love to hear more of them. Really progressive and modern sound, especially for 1975z Four stars. Standout Tracks: Isi, Hero, E-Musik
great
I really don't have a ton to say here other than that I was pleasantly surprised. I saw Krautrock in the description and prepared my body for the worst. As it turns out, I just had a false impression of what Krautrock is. This album was really nice, full of long form instrumental exploration that generally made for a soothing voyage with some lush layering. Some points that stood out to me: - Leb' wohl, while not my favorite on here, was some high quality relaxation music. Pretty piano with ocean sounds layered into the background. - Crazy juxtaposition into upbeat Hero that feels a bit like a parody of Bowie + Mick Jagger. - Really enjoyed the way that the rug was pulled out on finale of E-Musik. Really blissful experience. - After Eight reminds in essence of The Rolling Stones, but exists sort of in this uncanny valley that is amplified by the use of production effects to distort and warp the vocals. Solid 4 / 5 for me.
Wonderfully peaceful beginning makes me want to play Minecraft for hours on end on a rainy day. Hero was not a great track with whatever the vocals were supposed to be. Instruments were fine, but this track was so different from what I was getting from the first half of the album. I am glad that E-Musik got the album back on track. After Eight felt out of place too, but I liked it a lot more than Hero. Honestly without Hero and After Eight this is a high 4 for me. I still think it gets the 4, but I feel like it was such a cohesive album before listening to those songs.
First 3 songs were super calming and if I were on mushrooms I would be sinking into the earth. Hero was a bit rough to follow those 3. E-Musik had some really sweet sounds and that clicking was a cool way to make me feel on edge a bit. After Eight was kind of the same as Hero being a bit rough. This album started off in the 5 category but kind of got out of hand and sounded like 2 different albums put together. Still super cool and when I learned that this had some Kraftwerk members it kind of all made sense. Solid 4 and could be a relistener.
This was an interesting one. A few couple songs into it I was thinking this is perfect going to sleep music (not a dig), but then it got wild with some of the songs. Kinda sounded like a way way better Undertones.
Never before did I think I would hear punk mixed with ambient but it makes for a really interesting listen. There are a couple of songs where they put it all together and make something really interesting for the time, and there are other points where you don't know what the hell you're listening to. I think with anything experimental like this it's going to be a mixed bag but I liked it more than I hated it.
That was unexpected. The album contains some excellent instrumental tracks. If all the songs would have been of the same quality as the first three (ISI, Seeland and Leb' wohl), this would have gotten five stars. Sadly, the remaining instrumental track, E-Musik, is just OK, and the more guitar oriented ones (Hero, After Eight), which also contain some form of vocals, are atrocious in comparison. Still, on the strength of the instrumentals, this is a 4/5.
this was NEU! for me...
I liked it a lot although I wasn't a fan of the vocals whenever they came up - 8/10
I’m really confusing myself because I highkey really liked this? Except for Leb wohl. Like im just very much enjoying music lately but idk why im rating things so high. edited, I liked this but idt id give it a 5 so 4
Really good! Kind of all over the place stylistically but I liked it a lot. 8.5/10
ufatteligt vibe skift halvvejs gennem det her album.
Interesting techno.
Great fun ride!
Surprisingly good.
Kinda cool
Okay this was really cool. Influence on Joy Division and Sonic Youth for sure.
Krautrock that goes surprisingly relaxing for most of the time. It has something to it.
A very good albumnd pleasantly surprising listen. What I can't believe is that this album is almost 50 years old, but I would believe if it was released this year. My only gripe is that the songs go on for a bit longer than I'd like, but the songs themselves are very engaging. A good balance between calm and energetic, for all moods. Top tracks: Seeland, Leb' wohl, Hero
Tuneful, hypnotic, ponderous, thin. Psychadelic rock. Punk in places. I'd listen again thus 4 stars
Always up for a bit of Krautrock. I liked side 2 more than side 1
weirdly enjoyable
I liked this!
4 stars. really great stuff.
It is a masterpiece of Keautrock.
the instrumental ones with the wind are making me sad (i am playing minecraft)
Very good, really enjoyed listening to this. Mostly instrumental with rolling melodies & pulsing beats. When there is singing it sounds very Punk-like and this predates that scene so must've been a bit of an influence. Also quite ambient too at times. Of today's bands this reminds me most of 'War On Drugs'. 4- stars. Favourite track - 'Seeland'
4.5/5
Early krautrock. The two dudes in this band started their careers in different variations of Kraftwerk before branching off on their own. Their stuff is super ambient and chill. I really like it! Favourite songs: Hero, Leb Wohl, E-Musik, Isi, Seeland Least favourite songs: After Eight 4/5
I enjoyed this album, though musical.ly, it seemed to be a little all over the place. I am surprised that it’s from the 70s, and I imagine it was considered pretty progressive for time. I enjoyed the tracks without vocals best.
Actually very nice to listen to. Pretty relaxing vibe - enjoyed and would absolutely never have discovered this otherwise.
entrancing atmosphere top review is wild though
This one was pretty good. Some easygoingness and some with a bit of a upbeatness.
Well this is a couple of different things --- Side One was some very enjoyable mostly instrumental lushness, synth-y 70s keys but also actual piano and actual drums. Side Two was I guess why this gets labeled as proto-punk but I found that bit much more typical of the time, much less interesting. If I owned it on vinyl, I'd play the first side and never turn it over.
Not a bad vibe - Public Image Ltd ish?
感受宁静~
I do love me a bit of krautrock; the motorik beats, the hypnotic riffing, the creative use of noise and space, the wild sounds.... I am familiar with the first two Neu albums (both of which I love), but had never listened to Neu 75. I wish I had. I like the two sides structure, with the more ambient, chilled material on side 1. Some of the melodies are really beautiful. The rockier, more aggressive side 2 also works well for me. I think it is drawing a long bow to call it 'punk', but I can see how this would have been influential on punk. Johnny Rotten cites it as an influence. I like the splitting of material across the sides. I can see myself choosing to play one side or the other based on mood. More people should organize their records that way. Four stars, going on the want-list. (Update as at 2024: copy purchased)
Radiohead-esque pretty nice
Side 1: Very cool soundscapes with good solid rhythm and lead parts. Super chill with good ambience. Side 2: Rocking sound with lots of Krautrock feel. Very fun, but still serious music. ;)
Really like this album!
Interesting album, good in parts
Very interesting 4 stars.
I liked this! More mellow than I imagined it would be. Atmospheric and actually quite lovely.
Thought this was surprisingly enjoyable…not sure what I expected, maybe either heavy EDM or nasty metal, but this wasn’t either of those…very clean I thought
This was pretty good! Very relaxing for the first half. A bit of chaos in the second. Much like my typical day.
Surprisingly didn’t hate it
Favorite Tracks: ISI Seeland Hero
This is new to me and I thought it was great, a solid 4.5 stars
New wavey, spacey, clean production.
Yip.
Protopunk that makes me want postpunk
Enjoyed this, but more so the first half than the second punkier half. I had heard of this band before, but had never listened to them, so this was new to me (pun intended). This one gets bonus points from me for the clear influence I can hear in subsequent bands; early U2, New Order and Mogwai on the first side, then countless UK punk bands on the second side. Sealand is my favorite, that song is beautiful!
I so wish more music was like this. Maybe it is but I just need to find it.
I feel like I'm listening to post-punk music, but this came out before punk! These songs are a little too long for me, though.
Seriously, is there a bigger dichotomy in any genre between what you'd expect it to sound like based on the name and how it actually sounds than "Krautrock"? I just assumed that the entire genre would be like Kollaps, but it isn't at all. This music is a vibe, and I appreciate hearing the source of the inspiration of some of my favorite Bowie works. Favorite track: Hero
I had never listed to Neu!, but have listened to music of it's like. I’m definitely drawn to this style and will explore their other records.
feykigott. meirameira! 4,5!
I really loved this album. Was not expecting it to be as wild as it is. I would reach for this over Kraftwerk every time. Not as self consciously intellectual as Kraftwerk and much more fun.
Atmospheric KrautRock. Good to zone out to.
Really enjoyed this, it was chill but had energy at the same time. Just fun to listen to.
Loved it. Such great background music and calming tones
Read briefly that this was a krautrock band from the 70’s and boy howdy, did I have the wrong definition of krautrock. This is a very thoughtful, crafted mostly instrumental album. Like, good music for a long drive. Really enjoyed it. ISI and E*Muzik are my favorite tracks. Will listen to more of their stuff.
I loved it. Seems like a German artist. Very calming. Would listen on psychedelics. From the 70's. Lots of cool instruments. Favs were Isi, Leb Wohl and Hero
Oh this one is though. Hugely influential and the dawn of new musical possibilities but still very much in it's egg, but the framework is there! Not allvsongs are jams, but its hugely influential and showcases early computers in music
When Neu! is more ambient I find them the most easy-listening of anything Krautrock. Dare I say, it sounds pleasant. Of course the iconic Motorik beat is in full force, and I believe I prefer the slower ambient pieces of side 1 vs side 2. Overall though, Neu! is not my favorite Krautrock band but I can respect it. The fact that the album does not overstay it's welcome makes me rate it from 3.5 to 4 instead of down.
"Neu! 75" brought Claus Dinger to my attention, complementing my familiarity with Michael Rother's work in ambient music. The album's narrative of a reformed duo (ex Kraftwerk) individually shaping their sides based on their musical identities intrigued me The ambient part is has good as the punk part Really good album and discovery
What a cool album. First half was more atmospheric/space rock, which I really enjoyed. Then it breaks into punk on the track "Hero," very cool now and must have been VERY cool in 1975.
I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this was better than that. Often dreamy, often with a little edge, it's an interesting listen. You can hear a lot of Joy Division in parts of this album, which I found particularly interesting.
Pretty cool album, I think I prefer the first side but the second side is still interesting. I definitely haven't listened to enough krautrock I'm definitely gonna explore some more.
It’s been a couple days since I listened to this album so the details are fuzzy. However the one description I remember is timeless. It’s hard for me to believe this album was made in 1975 because it sounded like it could have been from the 2010s. Also apparently 75=3 because their albums go Neu!, Neu!2, then Neu!75. I suspect there is a Neu! fan out there, a real die hard and also a super nerd, that has come up with some number system where 75 does equal 3 and they wrote an amateur thesis about it. I’m looking for you Neu! super nerd. Find me. I need to read your deep insights.
11/1/23. Never heard of this group and didn’t know what to expect, did not see mostly instrumental songs coming. However, very interesting soundscapes that are soothing yet don’t let you get too comfortable. Consider me a fan.
The progression of songwriting is a step up from NEU! 2 and a very good listener from start to finish. I really like the use of piano and dips into some nice meditative ambiance.
I have never heard of this band before, but being a fan of post-rock bands like Sigur Rós and Mogwai, I quickly saw this as a big influence on their sound. The album is divided into two distinct halves, each showcasing a different side of the band’s experimental style. The first half of the album is more ambient and melodic, with soothing synths, piano, and guitar creating a dreamy atmosphere. The opening track “Isi” is a perfect example of this, with its hypnotic rhythm and ethereal sounds. The second track “Seeland” is a slow and somber piece, with mournful guitar lines and sparse percussion. The third track “Leb’ Wohl” is a farewell song, with spoken vocals over waves and piano. The second half of the album is more aggressive and energetic, with distorted guitars, fast drums, and punk vocals. The fourth track “Hero” is a proto-punk anthem, with Klaus Dinger screaming over a wall of noise. The fifth track “E-Musik” is a 10-minute groove, with a catchy bass line and funky guitar riffs. The sixth track “After Eight” is a reprise of “Hero”, but even more chaotic and wild. I love the contrast between the two halves of the album, as it shows the versatility and creativity of the band. However, I prefer the first half more, as it is more relaxing and immersive. I think this is a hugely influential and important album in the history of rock music, as it paved the way for genres like post-rock, ambient, punk, and new wave. It deserves to be in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die1, but it isn’t quite a masterpiece in every part. Some tracks are too long or repetitive, and some vocals are too harsh or unintelligible. I would give it a solid 4/5 rating, and recommend it to anyone who likes experimental and adventurous music.
This album surprised me. I liked it more than I expected to. Isi was particularly good. Most of the songs were just instrumental
I loved this. Right up my street. Listened through again immediately, and will dive deeper into Neu back catalog.
Never heard of them, but pretty good, especially the first half. Upbeat background music for work.
The are some albums which cross your path at precisely the time they are most needed. And so it is here, this morning, our plane taxiing at Logan airport , through the early morning mist, the bleary-eyed flight attendants barely keeping up the appearance that we’re all on a flight, rather than in bed. And as I— in the “still in bed” camp— put this album on. Exactly the right space. The sounds of drifting back to sleep in the early morning, the sun creeping up the walls but never enough to disturb. I wish I could have been just by the ocean, wherever they had been, when they recorded the waves on “Leb Wohl.” That is truly perfect. This reminds me very much of Eno’s work, but just a touch more song-structured, and more dynamic than I thought it would be. Even at its loudest “Hero,” recall the same droning, never-ending records from something like Bowie’s Berlin period. I was gently coaxed by this record, and then I was brought onboard. For being both gentle and alluring, I can think of no better. 4/5
Pretty decent background music!
Ahead of its time. Mixture of repetitive rock and amience tracks
I really enjoyed this. Quite an unusual album set-up of song lengths and styles and the way it built. Enjoyed the prog-slow building-ness of it. Will listen again
An amazing atmosphere, with juxtaposing sides that compliment each other in the strangest, perfect way possible. Different from the band’s other works but a welcome change
crazy original, singular, and mesmerizing, and its variety and progression
I know this album and enjoy it
I quite liked this one, short and sweet. Has a dreamy quality
Pretty good stuff. Chill, but good. 3.5/5
About as good as Krautrock ever got. Love the progression from soft to loud to soft again in particular. B+
I really enjoyed that, even though it was a bit bipolar, with the first few tracks being all floaty, ambient tunes, almost hypnotically peaceful, followed by - surprise! - we're a punk band now
Enchanting soundscapes made for quiet contemplation and moody night drives.
I really enjoyed this album of pleasant background music until we got to Hero. The vocals on that song were bad to my taste, and lucky me it was 7 minutes long!
Human needs to be humble about their voice...would be a better album if stupid human voice is not involved. One star added for the first half.
Never listened to Neu before but really liked it. Rhythmically hypnotic and futuristic sounding even at nearly 50 years old.
This one surprised me. Somewhat dystopian and desolate it still packs a punch and I enjoyed it. Hero is a banger! I can definitely hear how this influenced Bowie. Solid album.
Genres: Krautrock, kosmische musik, experimental rock, psychedelic rock, proto-punk Formed: Düsseldorf, West German in 1971 Run time: 6 songs, 42 min, 45 sec Neu! consist of Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, both former members of Kraftwerk. Thomas Dinger, and Hans Lampe both played on side 2 of the album. This is their third studio album. After a break from the group Rother and Dinger had diverged in musical direction. Side 1 caters for Rother's ambient taste. While side is a more aggressive, rock-influenced style with Dinger switching from Drums to Vocals and Thomas Dinger, and Hans Lampe both brought in to play drums. The album is not particularly popular. The most played track 1, “Isi” (an instrumental) having over 2.3M plays on Spotify. . Track 6, “After Eight” is the least played with just over 305k plays. It has a definite Punk vibe, which fits nicely with the timing of the album. The tracks all have German names, so I was surprised when the vocals were sung in English. I imagine side 1 being great for a chilled walk in the country, while side 2 would be great for driving at speed! Listen Again?: Yes and I’ll be trying their other albums. My Rating: ****
Big influence for some of my favorite bands
Was an easy, albeit surprising, 5/5 until the last track. Now it's an easy 4/5.
NEU!? Don’t you mean: “NEIN!”? Unfortunately this German piece of krautrock history is excellent, so my otherwise well-thought-out joke falls flat. If we could only pretend “After Eight” wasn’t part of the album, NEU! 75 would be the flawless masterpiece it deserves to be.
Grote inspiratie voor The Sex Pistols, David Bowie, Sonic Youth en Radiohead blijkbaar. 3x achter elkaar gedraaid. Helemaal te gek!
A good listen for work. Relatively wordless. Not 5 because its a little too fast paced.
I enjoyed this album more than I expected too. The opening, Isi, felt a bit adolescent to me, or maybe just unsophisticated compared to my last generated album which was straight electronica. But really this album goes on an interesting journey and all of it is pretty good. I think I'll even like Isi better on a second listen with the additional context. I do think this album belongs on this list and I'm happy to have heard it. I might check out some of their other work. 3.5 stars.
This was fascinating but confusing album. The first half is a mellow ambient sound like a mediation app would play for sleep sounds. Its a clear influence on electronica and is quite pleasant to listen to. The second half is more aggressive and clearly influential of punk. I'm not sure where I land on it as a whole album, but it was quite interesting.
Really liked how this started off with the first half as ambient music with Brian Eno vibes and then flipped to a Wire-esque art punk/proto punk sound. This is the kind of obscure diamond in the rough kind of album I was looking for from this list. It’s amazing also that this one is 50 years old and sounds like it just came out yesterday.
Completely new to me, but this really was something!
I've never even heard of these guys but I kinda dig this!
I really liked this one
Damn these Krauts can rock. An album from the A and B side era that could have come out at any moment since. Both sides are excellent. The first is ambient before Eno and a pleasurable journey around some mellow melodies. The second half is edgier, rockier and disruptive to the point I almost got delirious with all those hard edged sounds.
3.5
Actually beautiful! Loved this album. Worth a consideration on buying. 4/5
Since this was the 70's and this album was released on vinyl, I am assuming the first 3 songs were on side A and the remaining on side B. The switch from tranquil soundscapes to something more punk rock is a little jarring in the streaming age, but I have a feeling it worked well in the vinyl age. This feels very ahead of it's time I can se how this album would influence many musicians. The song Leb' wohl is so peaceful with its sounds of ocean waves and metronome. I feel like I could meditate to this.
Not much to say, but love where this goes, great album for ambient sound and texture
This was surprisingly pleasant and innovative stuff!
Elske krautrock
some of the songs have weird backing vocals that are not suitable for sleeping cool though
One of the best and most seminal krautrock albums. Motorik for days.
Score: 70 Album Art: 60 This is pretty good rock music for 1972. Lots of great ambient sounds in the background of the songs. Sometimes they go on for a little too long but not the point of irritation, they are still nice to listen to. Not sure why the last track isn't on Spotify but it is worth listening to. Fav tracks: Seeland and Hero No least favorites
Could listen to this all day! There's a sound here that's been an influence to a lot of other bands, including my fav The War On Drugs!
The first half was chill and the second half finished with a more frantic energy. I liked the buildup of this one, definitely ahead of its time. E-Music was my favourite but I really enjoyed this whole album. Can see myself returning to this one, another great new discovery from this project. 4 stars
Me gustó
It had my attention from the very start. I was curious about it and I felt very satisfied at the end. Will be listening to a lot more Neu!
Loved this, already in my frequent circulation list having listened to it quite a bit since Friday. Love that whole simple repetitive beat sound with lots of layers over the top. It must’ve sounded like the future listening to this for the first time back in the mid 70s. Never realised they were originally in Kraftwerk, surely making them some of the most influential musicians going. If 4.5 existed I’d give it that - loses 0.5 pt after it slightly loses its way in the middle
Banger
pretty good, enjoyed the sound!
Very chillax (!) with one head banger track (?)
post psychedelic atmospheric early punk tycho + sex pistols
FWIW, I don't see the change as such between Side A and Side B. A distinction without a difference, thankfully?
Cool use of phasing. Both halves being two mini-albums probably works even better on vinyl.
Unexpectedly enjoyable
This is sublime music to work to.
Krautrock always sounds better when you're travelling. Having missed listening to this album the other day, I decided to listen on my train journey into Bristol. It was getting dark, the evening felt brooding. The first track accompanied the walk down to the station; second track the train was delayed; third still waiting; fourth and fifth were the train journey itself; and the sixth was the walk from the station to the pub. Overall, turns out it was quite a fitting album for my journey. Enjoyed it. All that said, I'd expect listening in a different environment I would have scored it less.
A pinnacle of krautrock, featuring 6 great extended tracks. The first half is bright, calming, and atmospheric. You can hear the influence it would have on Eno and the development of ambient music. The spacey synths are very Eno-esque. We see a shift in the 2nd half to something faster, harder, and reminiscent of the works of post-punk artists like The Fall. I'm personally a huge fan of "Hero". The vocalist still feels like an accessory to the spacey guitar and the signature motorik beat. Despite being 42 minutes, it really flies by.
It's like a perfect blend of garage rock and prog. Krautrock (of Kossmischemisik to be PC) is fun. It can kind of blend in a bit after a while, even as it attempts to be abrasive, but it's a great introduction to what is a fun and exciting subgenre. Can are miles better though, and what I'd go to for a hot of this.
Wow, what a great listen. Some parts feel like I’m listening to a John Carpenter Escape from New York track, others feel more punk like The Stranglers… just great. 4! T3B 1. Hero 2. Seeland 3. Leb’Wohl
I didn't know what to expect here but this seemed really ahead of its time. Enjoyed
Ambient and atmospheric at start. A lot of similarities with other krautrock bands I've listened to before. The second half has more tempo and the song Hero is more in line with proto punk. Krautrock isn't really my thing but I get why this is a good album and the production is great.
It appears that the canonical lens to listen to this album through is that of two halves. The angle works well enough, but the band also makes a first-rate piece of interleaving work. The energy doesn't feel at all disconnected from the ambient bits. Every krautrock album needs a distinguishing mark, and I found this one's in the opening piano work. Wish that had stuck around more enduringly, perhaps as a subway to the texture.
A magical little record. “Cosmic music” is spot on. Both halves are chock full of interesting ideas and transportive passages, albeit in be very different ways. Worthy of some repeat listening.
Pretty sick! Listened to it twice and I’m listening to it right now.
Nice soundscape, quite pink floyd-y but nice and snappy, liked how it built up over the course of the album. You can hear the Kraftwerk in there too. Great friday morning listen.
Melkosta päristelyä. Aikaansa edellä. Hyvää krauttia! 4/5
Tää on kova! Vitosta hipoo.
Tykkäsin kyllä tästä. Mukavan seesteistä menoa monessa biisissä. 4/5
Catchy tunes
Smoothness
Nice and chill
I didn't expect krautrock and protopunk to work so well together. It's like chicken nuggets dipped in maple syrup - surprisingly delicious.
Really chill and laidback Krautrock. It doesn't really have anything particularly noteworthy, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.
4.25
Relaxing but still meta. Lowers the heart rate a bit eh Nolan? Nolan: Yuh
Woooooo
This - the last Neu! release is really two sides of a coin. Side A is very typical of the first few Neu! releases. Side B stretches out a bit more. Both styles work. In both cases, there is a layered, hypnotic effect that was ahead of its time and hugely influential. Perhaps this was their last true release because they had nowhere else to go.
Not what I expected out of Krautrock. Very dreamlike. Very good.
More mellow than I was expecting. Nice
