Mere jeg-har-en-stor-pistol-og-en-endnu-større-pik rap

Firstly, I don't care about what people deem offensive or not. Giving something a 1 because of offensive lyrics is silly. In Ice Cube you have a proven fake gangster who ditched rapping and started acting the second he got a chance and didn't look back. Having listened to some of the most important 'gangsta rap' albums I'm finding 95% of these guys are cardboard gangsters and they seem to end up harming their communities more than helping. The 'gansta rap' genre is a joke and this album is super dated and cringey. 2/5.

Really not my thing, just don't get it. 😕

Aaaah yes hahaaaaaa yes. The Chief baby. Aaaah yes

Because of this list I have listened to more rap than I'd ever choose. It seems to me the genre is mostly black men preaching about politics and society to their community and a bunch of white, suburban wannabes. I totally feel that - but I find a great irony in that four of the five most successful (black) rappers I know of leaned into the racist stereotypes employed against them, and all five, once successful enough, signed big contracts with corporate film/TV producers and hardly rapped another word. Two, in fact, are now big right wingers. What money can do, eh? So, enough about the genre - this album, for me, is repetitive, boring junk - Cube's a pretty good actor, though!

There is much to criticize and the album really doesn't deserve to write it all down.

Some songs are still relevant today as they were in the early nineties but the ones about women are awful and misogynistic I’m afraid

Feeling proud that I listened to the whole thing. This is not my preferred genre and while I recognize the talent, the violent misogynistic lyrics are really hard to take.

Misogyny aside, this album is very tiresome. Unlike Death Certificate, the denseness of the rapping became overwhelming. It’s a far cry from It Was s Good Day.

It's pretty theatrical. Hard to believe how seriously people took the gangster rap panic. Also a reminder of how much G-Funk changed things a couple of years later. It's fine, but Public Enemy exists.

Lyrical genius

Another album to cement my opinion that west coast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> east coast rap

I must say I miss NWA. The Ice Cube sound is one-note, mechanical, repetitive. To me boring. I find little engaging here.

Good beats but I can’t get on with this too well.

Monotonous and boring

Irrationally angry and violent

I’m more of an Ice T dude I guess.

I liked some of the beats at the start but that trailed off. Lyrics didn’t do anything for me. I’m not the target audience here Rating: 2.1

Just too one dimensional and samey for me.

I guess this was pretty iconic back in the day, but it is a strage listen more than thirty years later, particularly in light of Ice Cube's career trajectory after the fact. Sonically, it's got it's moments, although it's difficult to tell if this was something really new or the sounds of the times. Aside from NWA, I would be curious if removing Ice Cube from the music industry really would have changed much. Also, the repugnant, clumsy sexism is really grating, and I feel like an album half as long would've made the same point. One extra point for grooving pretty hard, but otherwise, replaceable.

Ice Cube breaks off from N.W.A. and just goes off. Props for jetting from LA to New York to link up with the Bomb Squad and their wall-of-sound chaos. It’s powerful and furious, more mission than melody, and opposite of subtle.

It's hard to offend me but this record did it. Ice Cube never sounds cool or clever in my opinion. The lyrics about fucking bitches and discarding them or wanting to hurt them are delivered with seemingly no tongue in cheek or even creativity. There's no turn of phrase or metaphor going on and I didn't catch an overall message. All of these hyperbolic stories seem to be there to make you think Ice Cube is cool, but it mostly just makes me disgusted. And seeing as he is now the star of shitty movies and procedural crime dramas, the stories also just ring very false. It really could be that I'm missing some implicit storytelling or commentary but I don't think I care to listen more to catch it. Also NWA had way cooler beats on their tracks.

Gangsta rap, again

Real good flow. That's about the only good thing I can say about this album. It started out fun, but got old real quick. Half the songs sound the same. I don't even want to address the lyrics on some tracks or Ice's hypocrisy. I had high hopes as it is considered a classic, but it failed to impress and that's going to hurt the rating.

Like every 90s hip-hop album it was too long and full of cringey mysogyny, but also has some great beats.

Not my thing.

I get why its on here... It's an important album. But, dang... every song sounds the same after some time. And holy misogyny.

Bomb Squad > Dre The production is star here, providing enough creative charisma to outshine Ice Cube and all his energy. Great sound, great lines - but it very much so stays in its sonic lane. The lyrics themselves range from witty insights into the ground-level view on oppression, to violent misogyny - what lands is great, what doesn't is very off-putting.... Naturally, the best verse is Chuck D. Favourite tracks: Once Upon A Time In The Projects, Turn Off The Radio

It became an agonizing listen too quickly, and I couldn't wait for it to end

i got Ice Cube fatigue quite early on in this tbh :(

i didn't hate this one but can't say i really enjoyed it

hmm, again not for me. but a good example of the genre from back in the day

A bit tooo crass for my taste sadly. Love the beats but struggled with the lyrics

Wasn't feeling it

Surprised I actually enjoyed this one a lot more than I was expecting. I actually really enjoyed the "ugly" beats and samples; the backing tracks almost remind me of industrial music at times. Ice Cube's rapping is definitely angry, but I dug it. The political songs are still relevant and important, but the misogyny has aged incredibly poorly. Also, I've said it before, but I can't stand Flavor Flav.

I respect it, but never jelled with this 90s gangster rap. I would have been in high school when this came out and had friends that were into it so I heard this album a bit. Never drew me in though.

I LOVE the old beats on this album. Old-school gangsta rap has some of the best when it comes to the funky, soul beats... but the tough guy schtick is pretty tired.

Not my kinda rap unfortunately. I like my Ice Cubes and my Ice T’s in movies and shows :p

Lite enformigt

Controversial for a reason. Saying things that needed to be said and made public information. Especially in white America. But, also its juvenille and tiresome. An HOUR of Ice Cubes monotone rap delivery. Early hip hop production takes so much away from this body of work also. Ice is the 90s gangster rap version of LL Cool J. Kinda lame by todays standards. But, influential and important. Progressive too.

The beats and samples under this were really good, but the lyrical content was pretty much what I would expect

On one hand, this album is clearly immensely influential to future rap albums. A lot of the lyrics have aged terribly, the beats are dated and monotonous. "It's a Man's World" is straight Cringe.

Ah, Mr Cube. I put you off for a few days because, bluntly, I was feeling too overwrought for no real reason to contend with what you're offering me. When I got round to it, it was...fine. It was OK to hear the backing - and at times downright good to hear it. The rapping is crystal clear. Sadly that means you're left in no doubt that, yes, he really is having a good old laugh about kicking pregnant women and so on. Many minus points for that.

Here we are. Another hip-hop album in the recent gauntlet that has been inflicted upon me. This isn't in the top 20, so I remain at having heard 10 of the best hip-hop albums on the site. I know Ice Cube was with NWA, though I'm not too knowledgeable about his contributions to the band, or what his voice even sounds like. Guess I'm going into this one blind, though if I'm to take a guess I'm expecting more gangsta rap. Hmm, yeah. Not for me, though I can appreciate the instrumentals. Very early 90s, turntable sounds and all. As for everything else, the lyrics are generally pretty eyeroll-inducing and the songwriting drags in many places, making the listening experience slow to a crawl. I'm also not too fond of the vocals. The shouting, bombastic tone is very much in-line with the style of this genre, but it's a little too much for me. There admittedly isn't much which sticks out to me about this album. I like the brief interlude on "Endangered Species". "Who's the Mack?" has an interesting sound. I wasn't expecting the album to pivot toward a funk sound, though it works well enough. I also dig the pan flute whichappears in the middle of the song. "It's a Man's World" is amusing, I won't lie. The lo-fi sound at the beginning of the track was quite nice. It hurts that it was so abruptly taken away from me, but in all fairness that's part of the fake-out. I'm gonna consult the book for why this is in here. Produced by Public Enemy's longtime producer. "Cube often belies his talent as a lyricist by writing gangsta garbage". Not sure how to feel about that comment. I'm not sold on this yet - I'm switching over to Wikipedia. Very warmly received by critics, with many placements on "best album" lists. This album also appears to have had an influence on other rap artists. I'm no authority on hip-hop, but this seems like a decent pick. I can cosign this inclusion.

Not my vibe.

Half way through this I thought, "Are We There Yet"? In all honesty, Cube misses the mark on about every metric I check for rap albums. His flow isn't versatile, he isn't leaning fully into the descriptive world of Compton rappers because he's dabbling with some prescriptive themes, but also it isn't cerebral enough to fully lean into the conscious rap category. The inconsistencies of critiquing the state of law enforcement and white neighborhoods for not caring about crime in black neighborhoods but also playing the role of the villain consistently throughout his career is hard for me to reconcile. I think the strength of the album is the storytelling, but the number of logical inconsistencies in his reasoning is maddening. I'm not here to critique the man's thought process on his own lived experience, but also to argue that you shouldn't fuck with a woman from the projects because she got you arrested even though you admitted that you have a warrant out is just base level processing. Also why does Cube always complain about not being played by radios and then write music that could literally never be played on the radio? Like maybe if he was writing conscious rap that wasn't glorifying forced abortions. And how can he consistently judge these women for getting pregnant but have a song about rawdogging a girl? These are the reasons why I don't listen to Cube - that being said, this album still has plenty to lean on, including some good old school beats, a good flow that just gets old after the first few songs, some clever rhymes, and some interesting observations about growing up in Compton. 2/5

Quite tuneful for the genre, but I still struggle with rap / hip hop. The obligatory N*ggas, mutha f*clerks are here in plenty, embellished with a liberal smattering of b*tches. I find it all pretty difficult to relate to

There’s things to like on this album. His wordplay is creative and there’s clearly talent in the production. When he’s writing about social issues it’s on point. But, the misogyny and harshness of the language is just too much to make it an enjoyable album to listen to.

I've given Ice Cube praise on previous reviews but my patience ran out with this one. Never rated the Bomb Squad's production style and I didn't find too much to admire in Cube's lyrics on this occasion.

Well shit. This wasn't what I was expecting to write here. Its good in a way. But its nowhere near new and exciting. The biggest problem with this album is it just harps on nwa every single chance it gets. With similar beats and flows and even samples from songs they put out the year prior. Like damn ice get ur own thing going here, dont just coast on nwa forever. Its disappointing for sure. But if you liked nwa your getting more of the same and thats a plus if in that camp. I love straight outta Compton and should like this but id just rather listen to soc every time. There are a few tracks on the backend that start to try something new but its just too little too late unfortunately. Decent record but it should be so much more than we got

#640. I think i expected more? This disnt really do anything for me. 2/5: meh

Some of the messages age incredibly poorly (misogyny) and some are just as relevant as ever (racism, abuse of power). Energetic, some cool beats. Nothing I'm likely to come back to.

I wish I could hear the backing tracks without the backwardness and misogyny.

classic 90s hip hop, but it was a bit repetitive, all songs sounded the same

Hip hop. Can't really connect

Yeah, I know I’m very much not the target audience for this so I’m probably missing the point he is trying to make. Not for me. I found spotting the samples quite entertaining though. Wanted to stop and go and listen to some Betty Davis. And why are the rap records always sooo long? They really do love the sound of their own voices

The Good: We get an ice-cube, and that is appreciated as it’s summertime and hot as hell! The Bad: The ice cube just kinda melted… The Ugly: Me melting as the ice cube did not manage to cool me off! Maybe, just maybe, the whole term Ice Cube has nothing to do with cooling things off, instead of irritating people when it starts to melt? What? I like Ice Cube, as an actor… and he’s had some good tunes too… just not this stuff… which get’s on ones’ nerve after a while. But then again, that is what Hip Hop does to me in general, so I should not bitch. I do always find it interesting though to listen to ‘90s hippidy-hop-you-don’t-stop as it is a stark reminder that certain musical waves should just be avoided at all cost… Also, where my ho at? I need some food and a refreshing drink… 2*, because I’m gangsta like that

Pretty much the exact type of rap I am not a fan of. Record scratches and rhymes that are spat right at you. Not god awful, but I probably wont listen to it again. Best: The Bomb Worst: You Can't Fade Me/JD's Gaffilin'

2 - the songs highlighting black oppression were good but the rest was extreme misogyny

You mean to tell me the guy from the 2007 hit family comedy "Are We There Yet?" put out a rap album? (Just kidding, I promise!) Ice Cube was obviously a huge part of the "gangsta rap" movement from the late 80s and early 90s with his part in N.W.A. That said, I always thought his lyrics were weaker than most of the rest of the group, and just never really enjoyed his stuff as much as Dre or Eazy-E. This album is well produced and has a good range where it doesn't just sound like the same sound over and over which plagued a lot of albums from this era. There are definitely worse rappers, but I personally think it was probably best that he put more focus into acting as he got older. I'm obviously not the target market for this album, and wasn't when it came out either. It's not a bad album but not my favorite.

Didn't click with this, a bit of a struggle for me, hasn't aged well either

Pre-listening thoughts: uh oh… heard this one was pretty misogynistic Post/during listening thoughts: “I’m thinking to myself why did I bang her / now I’m in the closet looking for a hanger” genuinely made me put this album down. In a bad way. This was after like eight other “she’s my bitch and she’s easy” type lines. This is why Sabrina Carpenter’s album cover is getting backlash lowkey like what was she thinking 😭 3/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: bro idk Least fav tracks: if he was rapping in simlish then it would be okay

Yeah...this was fine in the 90s culture. it's not cool anymore. Il

Rather outdated musically but really outdated lyrically.

I like NWA but this... no. Too monotonous and not creative enough.

Ice Cube used the word dick so much he had to resort to 'ding-a-ling' instead. 2/5

Für RAP ok. Ist aber nicht meine Musikrichtung. 2/5

The beat is pretty good, but the lyrics of more than half of the songs are just horrible

While there are a lot of positives. There are alot of negatives 1 skits. Stop putting unfunny skits on rap albums. Even if they were funny, dont put them on an album. It's a waste of time, it inflates the length by a stupid amount 2 too many of the songs are about having sex with Ice Cube, something I have no interest in Some of its good, but during the first listen, the idea of a second listen exhausted me

It's not a bad hip hop record, but nowadays those mysoginistic lyrics are a bit overwhelming and problematic.

Not one I enjoyed.

Solid flow and some interesting sampling/beats but it lacked the hooks in some of his other albums. The misogyny is also amped to a million here which detracts from the overall stories.

There's like 2 memorable tracks

Cubes voice and delivery are good, but the rhyme structure and lyrical content got boring fast.

I thought this was a bit uninspiring all over. Not the best and certainly dated.

Alright I guess. I'm a white dude from the PNW so I really can't relate to this material very well. I wouldn't know what qualifies this for the list of 1001 and I didn't really gain anything by listening through this.

It was fine, then it all started to sound the same…

Nope. Not for me.

lyrics didn't age well and there's not much range. really repetitive.

Not my kind of music.

Not a vibe. His points are lost in a flurry of sexist slurs.

I thought I’d like this more than I did. Ice Cube’s flow feels repetitive. It’s always the same relentless flow, delivered in the same shouted tone. The misogyny on a lot of these songs made things worse. The beats are a mix of N.W.A. g-funk, with some Public Enemy maximalism on other tracks. The music is strong. I just don’t love being in the company of Ice Cube for this long.

Not sure what the obsession is with dicks and ball sacks. Some serious Dick bingo going on. Not a G and dont listen to rap so cant really appreciate this style of music. I also dont hate the po, dont own a gun and not yet been in the crate. I think a good rapper but not relating to the style, the content or the music.

Why is there more than one Ice Cube album on this list?

I can’t stand early rap any more

Well... The backing tracks were brilliant and I really like the cadence of the rapping. But I just can't get past the lyrics. It's like an Andrew Tate fever dream, just awful. By the time it reached the duet where he was being misogynistic but Yo-Yo got the last word everytime felt like he knew he was doing it but he did it anyway. Gah.

Bruh I can't give an album that includes a track about kicking a pregnant woman in the stomach in order to avoid paying child support anything higher than this. This isn't even mentioning It's A Mans World. Some of a lot of the tracks on this are really good, but Ice Cube comes across as a massive c***

I always enjoy the early 90s hip hop style. The delivery, the beats, it just feels raw and right. This album is fine, but the endless profanity just feels really excessive. I'm fine with dropping bombs here and there, but c'mon, this is a bit much. A bit much to the point where I felt like I had to turn the sound down.

Borrrrrrrrrrrring!

It was okay. No songs were added to my playlist but I could see why people who like old rap would like it. Me personally, it just sounded like he was talking with a beat behind him.

I get the impact and influence, but naturally the world has changed in 35 years so some of it doesn't translate as well. No doubt an important album, but not really my cup of tea.

If we made a drinking game, and took a shot everytime the word bitch or hoe is said, we would be drunk less than 5 songs in. This album is too long, outdated, and overrated

Early 90s rap is not great.

Bored after 2 or 3 songs.

Though the beats are dated and pretty simple, I have a soft spot for that style. Where I do take issue is the lyrics. I haven’t been totally consistent with my rating in regards to sexist lyrics, but I’m finding it harder and harder to overlook as I go through these. Easier to stomach than the Eminem album last week, but I’m still not sure I can go up to 3 stars. 2.5

Wow, "You Can't Fade Me" is fucking horrific. This is shit that would have appealed to 13 year old me, and I would have probably argued "oh, this was just for shock value." As an adult, it's just gross. Stylistically and musically, this album hasn't aged well. I think the "fuck the police" and anti-black racism themes are unfortunately still relevant today. To give the benefit of the doubt, perhaps a good amount of the sexism on the album is either tongue in cheek or critical of people who behave that way, but it's still hard to stomach for me. If it hadn't been for the verse trading with Yo-Yo on It's A Man's World, I might not have been able to give any benefit of the doubt at all. I don't regret listening to this, but I can't say I enjoyed it very much. I was definitely a lot more into it when I was an idiot. It's interesting how some albums lock themselves into a specific time period (this album, for example) while a person continues to age, and other albums even from 40-50 years ago seem like they could have been recorded yesterday because lyrics, music, and themes don't seem to have aged at all.

Has a lot of the issues most hip hop from that era where it just feels uncomfortable with the misogynistic lyrics even though the one song kinda had a little rebuttal.

I'll give this one a 2. This type of lyrics are not longer valid anymore. Sad to see how normalized were back then.

⭐️⭐️ never listened to ice cube's full discography. i find that 90s hip hop is hit or miss for me and this was unfortunately a miss for me. boring at best and misogynistic at worst

The non explicit version was a little more bearable. Still the degrading of women was over the top.

5/10. I'm so conflicted on this. By FAR the most out of pocket album on this list so far, like it's so brazenly misogynist (which maybe is just a feature of rap at the time), but at the same time I feel like this album is entirely unserious so idek know what to think. The beats are good as well as the flow but gonna have to cap it at a 2 star 💀.

This album feels very theatrical. It's almost like he is playing a part. The woman hating seems put up on especially when he has a guest rapper come on at the end and undercuts it. One would assume this woman is buddies with him, the same way flav a flav is. Would he really talk about violent abortion with her in the room? I doubt it. I don't know it's all very ghetto drag to me. He has a good sharp flow but I can't listen to these misogynistic lyrics about hating women, hating gays, hating mexicans?(?) When you are trying to get respect for yourself. Putting down other people for your own gain feels really disingenuous and gross.

legendary, solid rapping album , thats very monotone . I appreciate what it did and a track here and there from ice cube is always fun but for an album , it doesnt keep my attention

Not the worst I’ve heard. I can tolerate early 90’s rap - and to be fair, this is actually okay. But I just find it hard to connect to

Of all the 90's rap, this is not as good or as talented as others. Ice Cube is slower and his rhymes aren't as good as others. He makes good political statements but I don't think the talent is as good as other rappers of the time. Then there is they misogyny, its really all over this album.

Does Ice Cube think he can taste alcohol through his bladder? Impressive skill of he can. More impressive than his music anyway.

Nah, bits I liked but it didn’t do much for me. Came in with high hopes and was disappointed

Sounds very outdated. "Some don't think I can flow" If you can, why don't you?

Good beats, flow. It would be better without misogynistic remarks.

Women, they're good for nothing, no maybe one thing To serve needs to my ding-a-ling Éttu skít, Klaki.

2 stars. Did I like this album? No. Does that matter? No. It's incredibly important for the history of rap.

I really had higher hopes for this, it doesn't work for me. Every song sounds exactly the same and Cube raps every song like its his dying breath Best Song: Rollin' With the Lench Mob Rating: 4.0 /10 2 Stars

Women, am I right fellas?

not for me

Why is there more than one Ice Cube album on this list? It’s not like he was so great. I don’t get it.

I kind of like old rap beats, but the lyrics on this? Fuck a duck the misogyny is over the top. Best track: idk, maybe Endangered Species

West Coast gangster rap blijft moeilijk. 5,5/10 Highlights: The Nigga Ya Love To Hate A Gangsta's Fairytale

You Can Fade Me/JD's Gaffilin' A Gangsta's Fairytale

It's kinda unpleasant. I know I'm not the target audience but I hear very little guile in the creation of this....

Technically decent and some of the tracks sound like a big improvement over the very dated sounding 80s hip-hop. But I don't want to listen to the misogyny and the glorification of violence. Maybe gains points for its influence on improving hip-hop technically. But loses at least as many points for being one of the frontrunners of rappers glorifying violence and discrimination.

Same shit different cube

It's not a most wanted album in my household, that's for sure. Don't really like the flow, style, beats. Or the lyrics and themes. I guess for me Ice Cube is more an actor than a rapper. Bit of a waste of time.

It was ok, not a rap fan, but was still listenable.

Never could get into this style of music. It's just too violent for me. *shares another UHC CEO meme*

I don’t hate the beats but 90’s Hip Hop/Rap as a whole I really do not care for

Yo! Fuck bitches and suck my dick!

# Album Name: AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted # Artist: Ice Cube # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Meh. Another boring rap album. Not my thing. Literally every track sounds the same to me. Its better than most modern rap though. Crap lyrics though. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No

Ice Cube spends most of the album doing his best Chuck D impersonation, then Chuck D shows up and blows him out of the water.

Лучшая песня - Endangered Species (Tales From the Darkside).

There are plenty of rap albums I like less than this. I tend to enjoy Ice Cube's voice, and his beats are OK. The overall effect of this doesn't really land for me, though. The hooks don't really grab me, and it often feels dated in terms of execution.

So much shouting. Cube’s flow is decent, but it’s drowned by the constant shouting and lack of levels. The anger is justified and the source of the rage important, but it’s kind of exhausting to listen to a whole album of it. Not my preferred style of hip hop. I re-listened to Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul’s debuts after this, released right around this time, and they are so refreshing in comparison.

It is hilarious to me that in the intro to You Can't Fade Me, Ice Cube says "Drop a old school beat". This whole album is nothing BUT old school beats. The misogyny is exhausting.

Well this really aged poorly (at least the lyrics did), as he hates women completely. At first I thought it‘s meant ironic but either I didn’t get it or it was meant pretty serious.

There’s some good flows, but I can honestly say that people weren’t wrong in objecting to this. The misogyny is at an unnecessary level, even in the world of rap at that time. Cube’s own NWA handled it better (not without any misogyny, of course). It’s just distractingly annoying in this album.

Gangsta-cringe

definitely genre defining for an iconic figure, don't like the content, but sound decent.

Nice beats but why the language?

Fav: The Nigga Ya Love To Hate Least Fav: Once Upon A Time In The Projects After the 4th song it begins to grow boring and very same-y, I respect what it’s going for but it just really didn’t captivate me. The misogyny was certainly not great either. This album basically has the same issues of the Eminem album I listened to previously.

fineee im not in the mood for hip hop rn i cannot

Angry, fierce, relentless, prophetic, but rather wearing as an hour long listen

The Public Enemy influence was unmistakable. Always surprised when folks are shocked at the lyrics of early gangster rap. Different times. 2.75

Not my favorite genre and while the beats were fine the lyrics were a bit gross lol

Quite enjoyable, if a touch longer than it should be

I found this all a bit samey and dull. His delivery doesn't change much from track to track. And yes, the lyrical content is pretty misogynistic.

Beats felt same-y. Lyrics felt same-y. Why are you hating on women so much?

I will never be a big rap fan so I do need to take that into account. I understand the significance and influence of this album however the lyrics are despicable and the music was just alright. I’ve definitely heard worse music and at some times I was bopping around to the tune however not my jam.

STANDOUTS: It's A Man's World OVERALL: 2/5; I don't think this album was necessarily for me?

oh...... i dont know what to think isnt it a little misogynistic? im conflicted my favorite song: /

Rough listen. Old school gangsta that did NOT age well.

Ok. Not as good as his others

Too misogynistic for me.

This whole album was kind of dumb and exhausting. A couple of good tracks but a big pass overall.

Really tough to listen to. Very abrasive which is the point, and normally I like that kind of thing but some of the misogny was so hard to listen to. 2/2.5

Didn’t like it. Boring. Not much to say. Don’t hate this type of rap but idk this was just boring.

Not 4 me

Decent album marred by casual mysogynistic lyrics

Cool production from the Bomb Squad, but lyrics and vocal performance ruin it for me.

NWA was so much more than the sum of its parts

Starts strong with Ice Cube’s ferocious energy but said energy becomes numbingly monotone with how uniform it is throughout the album. More laid back storytelling is applied in e.g. Once Upon a Time In The Projects and A Gangsta’s Paradise, offering some nice variation, but for the most part the album just devolves into these for some reason increasingly mysogynistic digressions and stories that take up the forefront.

Decent production and Ice Cube is a legend but this starts getting a little repetitive for me after awhile. Could be the style, could be that i'm tuning out the lyrics too much in the middle of work.

Lyrically fierce with an assertive flow, although musically, there's not a ton of variety or depth here. And a rough listen for any woman to have to sit through. Salvaged a bit by the fact that there is some social commentary. So you get one more star than Eminem got yesterday, congrats.

The beats and samples are alright, but Ice Cube sounds about the same throughout the whole album. Also, why so many skits?

Album 426 of 1001 Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted Rating : 2 / 5 After all of the good music I've listened to lately, I unfortunately had to sit through this.

Was ready to go three stars, but just really can't get over some of the lyrics. Nice Snoop Job cameo at the end, though.

Early 90s gangsta rap - violent, angry, hypocritical lyrics. His misogyny is all forgiven since he gives Yo-Yo a rebuttal track. Ice Cube's rapping is not all that good. Chuck D brings some energy on one track. It's not enough.

Fuk the Po Po

We only needed Predator on the list, it's kinda mad how far Ice Cube progresses from this to that in two years.

More music to terrify suburban white parents in the 90s.

Kinda surprised to see a second Ice Cube album here. After listening to the first one I realized it is more fiction than nonfiction which seems counterintuitive to building up credibility. So going into this one with that in mind I can laugh a bit more at the silly bits, but still struggle to understand the fantasy of wanting to be a criminal. I'll be surprised to see a third come up. Favorite track "A Gangstas Fairytale" 2/5

I understand the "hard core" song lyric competition with other artists of the time and genre, and the stories are important ones, but overall it is way too many foul words for me....and I cuss at least once on any given day.

Ok then, Cube.

I like Ice Cube, I found this album to be very long and kind of like listening to a conversation while I'm doing something else. Good beats but nothing that grabbed my attention throughout.

I thought I'd like this but it was pretty bad. Bad production and a lot of very dates lyrics. 1.75 stars.

Not my thing, but it does sound well put together.

<<heavy sigh>>. The anger, the misogyny, the constant “n-word” and profanity... It’s all rather trite and frankly boring. Some of the beats pretty decent, funky and driving. But after 50 minutes, it all blurs together. The use of various interjections and such is, well, it’s been done before. Of course, Ice Cube has leveraged all this hate and anger into a successful career in TV and Movies and commercials for light beer. With a 30 year marriage, and family (including grandkids). I wonder if he plays his old music for his daughter? This is probably better than some of the hip hop I’ve had here, but that’s a really low bar. 2/5

The sound is very Public Enemy, but with worse lyrics. He's good at what he does, I'm just not that into it.

I don't like rap! 2 stars

There are much better rap albums.

good backing tracks, but nothing on here warrants an album

2.5 This one didn’t really grab me

There were some things here I liked. The political messages, the beats were decent. But the misogyny and homophobia put me off.

Not the kind of rap music that I enjoy. Too direct I guess, I prefer some subtlety with my rap music. Couldn't make it through the entire album 2.5 stars

Hip-hop. Mucho taco y poca chicha. Un 2.

No me aporta nada.

Eh, it was ok. I can see why this would be included on a list of influential albums. There's a lot of sociopolitical commentary on the album that's on point, and the fact that it's still relevant today proves the importance of the album. On the other hand, the over the top machismo and misogyny really drags the album down and undermines the more important points being made. The meta commentary and self-deprecation happening on "It's a Man's World" starts to address this, but it never quite gets there. At the end of the song, Cube's still left holding the same gross opinions about women. The hypocrisy of so much of the album trying to justify gang life as an inevitability for Black men held down by systemic racism while refusing to see how the same systems (and his own behavior as a womanizer) create the "bitches and hoes" he has so much contempt for is pretty bad. The repeating themes of every Black man Cube disagrees with being a sellout and all women (except for the "pick me" ones) being whores get old fast. "You Can't Fade Me" is especially horrific. I'd probably give it a 3.5 without the sexism. With it, I can't give it more than a 2.5—I won't be listening to it again.

Honestly now that I'm in my 50s the gangster rap just sounds silly. The lyrical flow was good the Beats were great but content wise it was unappealing. Will not be adding to regular rotation

Has that classic early 90s hard rap sound, but holy misogyny batman. Nothing really standing out and certainly not something I want to be heard listening to.

Nicht gehört

Lots of musical value here, hard to get past a lot of the content.

Totally understand the importance of this. There are some good hooks. But this is just not my kind of genre. It was a bit of a chore to get through. Especially due to the lyrics. 2/5

It's fine. A lot of the songs feel the same, and once you've heard the first 30 seconds of any song, you've heard the whole song.

Meh. All songs blurred into one to be brutally honest. Ice cubs lyrics were funny but this album isn't for me.

It started off with regular old misogyny but by the end reached peak cringe misogyny. A Gangsta's Fairytale was funny though, I'll give him that.

Definitely not a fan of 90s rap.

He's definitely a very good rapper, but rap is not my thing.

Dodgy lyrics & repetitive sounds do not make this that listenable for me. Didn’t mind Once Upon A Time In The Projects & Turn Off The Radio. But really, I can do without it.

A legend in the hip-hop genre to be sure; the whole genre would not look anything like it does today without Ice Cube and NWA. That said, this definitely is a good circumstance where the influence is still felt today, but the material itself just did not age well

It's really hard to get past how much he hates women.

Cranky and didn’t like it

Oof I disliked this. Just a little too angry for my taste

90s hip hop, but I prefer it more lyrical

Not my thing

I fully understand why this is in the list but on its own this is just not very good. The rapping is juvenile and the beats are lame. Doesn’t help that ice cube is like, pro police now

Not for me. Way too much violence, misogyny and anger. Can’t deny the underlying message but I don’t identify with it. There are some clever rhymes. Ironic that he’s now a mainstream actor.

I prefer his second record, but this one was still ok to listen to. I always enjoy hearing the political songs that Ice Cube put out back in the day because I feel like he was one of the first ones to tell it like it is without fear or repercussions from a label or censorship. Sadly, a lot of the topics he discusses like police brutality, racial prejudice, and life in the projects still rings true today. I know a lot of people commented on the misogynistic lyrics which normally wouldn't be too much of an issue with me because he tries to keep up this "tough guy" persona. However, when you're speaking about racism and how black people are mistreated, yet turn around and contribute to the degradation of black women, that just doesn't really sit right with me.

Ice cube is so tough and badass. I’d say that’s how he wants you to think of him based on the way he madly yells his rap songs. I can see why people call him a sellout going from this album to kids movies. This album want bad but very one dimensional. No vasoline is a bit better than this and both are way below dr Dre’s albums. Not sure how much I’d go back to this one though. 5.6/10

It's certainly a hard album to listen to but is that a reflection of the lifestyle the commentary is based on. I don't know and I guess I should be grateful for that. Fave track: It's A Man's World or maybe I'm Only Out For One Thang for the Flavor Flav feature.

Goddamn that's a tiring amount of misogyny. I was thinking it was gonna be a three during the first couple of tracks but it really wore me down - the only reason I'm not giving it a 1 is that I guess there's a bit of valid social commentary sprinkled in there, and, 706 albums into this, only Kid Rock has got a 1 out of me and this is not quite Kid Rock levels of contemptible, but damn it's close. 1.5, for sure. Fave track...... pheeeeeeew, I dunno. "A Gangsta's Fairytale" had some slight comedic value, I guess...

Not my thing

Decent rhymes but the misogyny was a little too much for me.

Aggressive Storytelling with interesting backing beats, social messaging is throughout. However, some lyrics are dated. The cadence is the same for most songs, which is different to what I’m used to.

Neither the sound of the album, not the misogyny have aged well

not in 5001

Yuppp.... suffers the curse of so many rap albums from the 90s on here: sexist. This has aged very poorly it makes it a tough listen. It's a shame since I enjoyed it at times (and it's not too long!!) but yeah it's aged poorly and unfortunately that matters.

Was never into gangster rap, but it was ok, doubt I'd listen to it again

Some great, incisive bars scattered throughout an album that’s at least 30 minutes too long. Misogyny aside, it’s just hard to take Mr. Cube seriously when his hard-hitting political takedowns sit alongside rhymes about gangster nursery rhymes.

Meh, tough to see why Ice Cube deserves a spot here. Not awful, but obviously the lyrics are shit.

Compared to his icy cousin, T, Cube is all attitude and misogyny and no fun.

4/10. I get why this album is important, but I think it does rely a little bit on shock value to make it exciting, and 30 years later it isn't all that shocking anymore.

Ice Cube spits it but it doesnt grab me like other albums

Decent groove dodgy lyrics. Mr Cube certainly has a lot to say. Most of it I don't agree with. Like he gives a shit. I bailed when gun shots replaced the beats.

There were songs here and there that I could get into, but ultimately if felt like half the songs had gunshots and sirens in them. I have no scope of understanding in that world, where every song is about either being hard or getting laid.

Early 90’s rap. Once you get past the mindset of the times, it’s a solid artistic album but not particularly my thing

2.25. Slightly better than the predator

Gangsta Rap at its gangsta’y. Considering NWA were so important and their music so powerful this was a let down for sure. Expected more than just an angry man shouting swear words.

I can see why this is included in this list, but some themes are too misogynistic for 2023.

*clutches pearls*

The first few tracks are such fire songs that I was so excited to hear the rest of the album, which I thought I would end up giving 5 stars and calling it my favourite hip hop album so far. But this gets so misogynistic!!!! Raps against black oppression but promoting women’s oppression?? Idk, feels really wrong and icky and definitely has aged poorly 30+ years after release. 2 stars bc the first two tracks were BUSSIN

Politically interesting. Misogynistic. Sonically decent but not good enough to ignore the misogyny

One of the mant albums on this list where once you hear one song you pretty much know how the rest will sound and you just have to slog through it. Very one-dimensional and repetitive in almost every way. 3/10

I really liked N.W.A.'s debut album, so I'm kind of disappointed with this. Every song sounded the same. Ice Cube's an angry dude, I get it, but screaming in my ear for 50 minutes got pretty tiring half way through. Second half also falls apart in the beat department. Not to mention the weird misogyny (although that's sadly to be expected in 90s gangsta rap). 2/5. Better ice type rapper than Vanilla Ice, because Ice Cube learns Ice Beam at level 29, which is super effective against dragon types.

Hip hop típico

Very of its time with the misogynistic and homophobic lyrics. At least the music sounds good

Real old school hiphop, not my genre but I enjoyed some of it. To me the beats is most of the songs sound the same, so it gets repetitive after a while. For one time listening it was okay. Favourite song: - Who’s the Mack

Better of Dead- intro of death penalty The N**** Ya Love to Hate- Very fun hook 👍 AmeriKKKa’s most wanted- didn’t work for me What They Hittin’ Foe?- very short track You Can’t Fade Me/ JD’s Gaffin’- very much of its time, interesting to listen to with a good beat, but v uncomfortable lyrics and flow is clunkly at times Once Upon a Time in the projects- damn not a great experience then👍 Turn Off the Radio- someone sounds a bit salty Endangered Species- Really hard hitting song 👍 A Gangsta’s Fairytale- I mean, I guess I appreciate the commitment to the bit? I’m Only Out for One Thang- …yeah no Get off my dick and tell yo bitch to come here- title longer than the song The Drive-By- another interlude, this time a drive by Rollin’ wit the Lench Mob- the chorus is a bit of a clusterfuck, and let’s just say we’ve heard this lyrical content before Who’s the Mack?- What’s with the moaning in the background? I like the storyline otherwise 👍 It’s a Man’s World- The hook is cool, like the exchange but I don’t think it achieves much for me. The Bomb- Another extended metaphor, this one is quite fun 👍 Good narratives, flow can get repetitive and the misogny is abundant. I’m gonna say it isn’t my favourite. 2/5

Not my thing but can’t complain

Didn’t listen. Probably rap.

Great beats, but lyrics to some songs are extremely sexist and misogynistic.

Ice Cube is O'Shea Jackson from L.A.. This was his debut solo album. He also performed with N.W.A. He has two albums on the 1001 list. Initial Impression: Offensive and angry. Singles: --------------------------------------------------- AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (#1 US RAP, #76 UK) Who's the Mack? Endangered Species (Remix) The music, beats and rap is outstanding. The lyrics are angry and offensive. Rating: 2.5/5

Not his best stuff

racist piece of shit but the music is brilliant

It was okay but the misogyny was too much for me. I’m docking a star because it’s the only power I have over this 32 year old album.

In context, this was probably better than stand alone. Everything is really dated, but some decent story telling, but often corny.

T3B 1. Rollin’ Wit The Lench Mob 2. The Ninja Ya Love To Hate 3. Who’s The Mack?

Seems a bit one note.

Rap, 1990. I am not a big fan of old school rap, so I probably don't get this album. I found the flows a bit repetitive, the chours quite powerless and the productions are too "old fashioned" for my personal taste.

i am so impressed with the amount of political and social commentary on this album! ice cube held nothing back. by that alone, i can understand the album's deserved influence over thirty years. not to mention the songs are catchy! creating catchy songs with power isn't easy. that being said, there are a number of, uh, aspects about women that aren't great and make me feel uncomfy.

After splitting from N.W.A., Ice Cube certainly had his work cut out from him trying to deliver something as hard hitting and impactful as Straight Outta Compton. That said, he probably got closer with this album than anyone else could have. This album feels like a sequel or an add-on to Compton. I'm not familiar enough with rap to know if this is typical or not, but I found it intriguing how much Ice Cube sampled his own group's work in this album, just further tying it to its predecessor, the elephant in the room. Ice Cube hits on a lot of tough topics here, but this album suffers from the same thing that Compton did: overt and excessive misogyny. It just hasn't aged well.

Yeah nah

I stick ice cubes down my pants to arouse my increasing flaccid penis. It doesn't really work and neither does this record. My freezing dick isn't happy.

Too big to fail

some good tracks but a lil repetitive

Some sweet gangsta rap. 3 Really bores me after a while though 2

Raw, angry, but doesn't flow and nowhere Near his best

This started off great, classic style hip hop with strong beats and driving flow, but soon showed its age, with middling at best songs with poor lyrics.

Decent, but a bit dated. Very clearly an early 90s west coast sound, good beats but the social commentary aspect of it probably more impressive than the actual lyrical quality. Influential on what was to follow but I feel I've been spoiled by improvements in the genre in general, particularly in production quality. 2.5 maybe.

Given the reviews above, I thought it'd be worse than it was, but I think we'll get a lot better hip hop than this. Mixes in some interesting social commentary that would've been pretty inflammatory in 1990 (but feels a bit stale now) with a lot of lines that made me wince pretty hard. It's pretty crude in a lot of places - 'Get off my my dick and tell your bitch to come here' as the title of a song sounds like a bad parody of rap, and the attitude towards women in general is pretty grim. Also, I'm not a prude, but the unrelenting tide of bitch/nigga/dick is pretty wearing and it loses its edge by the end because you're so worn down. 2/5.

Decent late eighties/early nineties rap. I really like Ice Cube's style, but like later period gangsta rap more. This is a little too close to the NWA/80s style. 2.5/5

average 90s rap

It's probably a great and iconic rap album but I just don't get it. Rap will never appeal to me. He does have a good way with words however, i will give him that.

I get the message but it gets a bit tiresome after a while.

Some days you need to be in the right mood for the 1001 albums, it can be a challenge. On this particular day and this particular album, there was too much content to stomach. I managed to get about halfway through before needing a break, and didn't feel like coming back to it, maybe another day.

Not my thing

Really didn’t enjoy “You can’t fade me”, but liked this album more than most rap I’ve listened to.

Meh, its ok, no real hits

Not my thing

No thanks

I testi manco l'ho guardati.

Meh. Probably wouldn't bother again.

not to my taste - wasnt a stand out album musically.

Nice beats, repetitive flows

I've never been a fan of "gangsta rap" but I appreciate what Ice Cube has done for the music industry.
