OPzich okeish
I feel like I need to be in a shared flat, with no job and 6 other dudes to vibe with this completely.
I think by-and-large this group has not really enjoyed this kind of 80’s synth-infused proto-U2 mumble rock. Like, it’s fine but there is literally nothing inspiring about this to me.
Fake The Cure, quite boring, I didn't like it. There's no need to say much more than that.
I have never heard of this band, this album, of this "Madchester" genre--and for good reason, it's all shit innit? Probably a time and a place, but this seems pretty inconsequential to me. No interest in ever revisiting.
'Yeah it's alright' kind of album
Day 10 of listening to 1001 albums everyday, one album at a time. I’ll start with saying I usually give an album a benefit of the doubt and try understand where it is coming from. Or maybe even put myself in the time period and this album coming out during then. However none of those thoughts help bring this album anywhere close to actually being good. The writing and vocals are obnoxious and awful. The only thing that keeps from giving this album a one is the constant good psychedelic funk. However it is unfortunate that the lead singer voice over it sounds horrible and doesn’t allow for that music actually come through. Even during a 6 minute track where it’s suppose to let the music breathe they decided to add his vocals and it ruins it. I don’t like this album and truly don’t get the point of some of these lyrics. Some are meant to be like they’re writing stuff to make people mad but it more comes annoying than anything. To some it the best way I can, I am bummed a band called Happy Mondays made feel so awful on Wednesday.
Want to like this more than I actually do in reality. Remixes routinely better than originals. Too long, too noodley. Joke title is the cleverest bit about it.
Meh. It was fine but not anything earth-shattering for me
Very thin sound and the vocals are pretty bad.
Le début de l'album me plaisait, mais j'ai vite trouvé que ça devenait redondant et un peu unidimensionnel. C'est loin d'être un mauvais album, mais j'oubliais un peu qu'il jouait. 5/10
Interesting start, really got my attention - but then it fell off, and I didn't really notice the rest of the album.
Might have been influential, but the folks who came after just did it better. Would have been a 1 but a song or two was just okay. 2/5
I kinda like Kinky Afro from this band, but that's not on this album. Not really feeling this project. 2.5/5
Bleh. All started to sound the same
I found this really boring actually. Really average rock with some guy shouting inanely as “singing”. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Rave On Rating: 2
Too derivative
bloody drag to listen to. it wasnt the absolute worst but it was close
More generic British 80s glam music.
Couldn’t finish it, got really bored.
New to me. Sounded like alot of 1980's danceable rock. Yawn, for me.
I listened to this a few times because I felt like I was missing something... seems up my alley, but fell flat. I got excited as the last tune "Lazyitis" started because it felt like it was going somewhere different, but then I realized it was just "Ticket to Ride"... oh well.
Pretty meh. Some was okay but overall it all sounded pretty much the same.
zzzzzzzzzzzz
המוזיקה לא טובה... אבל עדיין שמיעה.
Listened a couple days ago and can’t remember how I feel about it tbh so there’s that
Pretty bummed that this is included in the list. Nothing spectacular here.
I don’t get psychedelic funk, clearly
2.5
Not for me
This kind of music is just too cheesy for me. Reminiscent of a lot of bad 80s music. I couldn’t finish this record. It’s not a one star, but damn close.
Would not want to listen to this again. And it was way too long.
too weird for me
Not for me
I don‘t know. Sounds like they summon old times and coat the mediocre songwriting by overlayering every instrument with reverb to the max.
Heard of this band but not that impressed. I don't think I remember anything about the album after having just listened to it.
Boring, meaningless, sounds like the worst of the 80's combined. Not my cup of tea.
It was 80s. And boring. Like pieces of other 80s bands and songs stitched together, but without the interesting parts. The singer sometimes reminded me of Ian Astbury of The Cult but with less expression. All in all quite forgettable
Like a weaker INXS or Cure. Also did thry steal the melody to Ticket to Ride on Lazyitis? Just kind of dull music lol
Skipped through most of it. I mean, what did I expect from an album with a cover like that?!
<Boom Boom Boom Boom> <Husky Drawl/Whisper> Blah Blah Blah. Oakenfold's remix of WFL is the only reason that I have submitted myself to this swamp of murk. Ok. Not fair. "Hallelujah" is epic. Come to think of it. "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" is not quite the same as "1001 Absolutely Spiffiing Albums You Must Hear Before You Die". Other than if existential despair is your leitmotif... ,
4/10 nothing special but not terrible
Moving in with Fat lady wrestlers Hallelujah Rave on Very interesting to listen to. Great album to multi task too or back ground music. Got boring in the end. Def couldn’t sit down and listen to the album alone
elevator music for teenagers
A drug-fueled mess of an album. Totally boring.
The Smiths, but boring
Not as aggressively awful as some of the others, but annoying enough that I was glad when it was over.
Bisschen viel geleiert
kind of a bop
Hayek lang wel
Pretty good
It’s no Stone Roses. Or even The Cure. But at all times, part of it tried to be. I think I’m not not that into the whole Madchester thing. But I felt like there were a lot of Danny Boyle moments on the record. Panicked when Spotify told me it was 2 hours but then noticed that was the Deluxe Reissue or whatever, with 12 different Hallelujah remixes. Phew, I think.
Maybe I was just not in the mood but this just seemed really anxty. Not sure if that's a real word
Kanske behöver en om lyssning egentligen
I’m sure there is context for this one but I can’t be bothered. Songs have no real structure, they kinda just happen. On paper I should like this album with its new wave influence, but absolutely nothing stands out. It’s not too offensive, just a slog.
80s (disco-)rock that not hooks me any more. Not a single rememberable song.
First song is extra terrible. After that it becomes more British 80's pop, like the Cure. Not my thing.
Didn't like it much
I just can't get into these guys ..... it's probably a failing on my part .....
Meh. How this album scores a spot on a list of albums you must hear before you die is beyond me. 2/5
Did not like this at all.
This Mad Chester fella need to be locked up
Trash
Ja flinke achtergrondmuziek kon hier niet veel mee..
STOP AUB MET DIE BRITSE ROCK
The Spice Boys at their finest. Like listening to the cider swiggers outside the bus station.
Bummed
A few of the songs sounded ok, but didn't help the singer was out of tune. A bit of a noisy mess really.
There were a couple tracks here I could see getting into in this album, they've got that solid new wave/dance-rock feel to them that I could see being something I would enjoy out and about. However, the album seemed to get aggressively more British with each track, and not in a good way. We're talking the most annoying acts from Britpop assuredly took influence from this album, and didn't realize that iconic whine was something that is grating on the ears. Some of the instrumentals are fine, its all very fine, but after a while it just was all blending into the same thing, with little to make it stick out.
Did not like it at all
2.5/5
New-to-me band. Very long collector's edition album. Got through most of it. Okay.
englischer rock, mit anfangs gutem drive - aber mit der zeit eintönig. in der remastered-version sind dann in der 2. hälfte viele mixes mit acid/house-touch .. ah, wird einfach nicht besser. geht bei mir in „1001 second choices“.
Not great :(
I Really enjoyed pills and thrills, this one just isn’t as good, and therefore probably doesn’t need to be on the list.
Pee Wee's Funhouse vibes with too many songs
Nothing special about this 2*
I usually like a heavy English rock group but I could barely understand the lead singer. Instruments were too bogged down and melded together so it felt like just background noise. Not really into the sound although can see the influence this album had.
Meh
For the most part rather ugly music with moaning vocals.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Well, well, well. We meet again, Madchester. I've listened to a few albums from this fairly niche movement before, and I quite liked them. The debut album from The Stone Roses in particular stood out to me as a truly great album. So how does Bummed by Happy Mondays compare? Not well. I did not care for this album. The sound is pretty decent. It's somewhat repetitive, but I wouldn't say it was too repetitive, even if it was kind bordering that edge. The singing was okay at times, but also was just kind of dumb at others. The lyrics don't make much sense to me. I couldn't really gather what most songs were about, and when I could, it was about drugs or sex. I just wasn't interested in this one. Apparently this band has another album on this list, so I'm not excited for that. However, apparently that album is better than this one, so I'll try to remain optimistic whenever that comes up. For now though, this album gets a 2/5 for being uninteresting.
Very brit. Forgettable.
Did not care for this too much at all. The songs themselves are okay but quickly forgettable. Except for Rave On because of how different it sounds comparstive to everything else, and I'm not sure if thats good or bad. Reminded me a little of Fine Young Cannibals without any hits.
Niet alles wordt mooier van xtc, laten we het daar op houden. Ik ben er zonder kleerscheuren doorheen gekomen maar ik heb geen seconde genoten.
Jeah
I’ll be honest I gave up on this. Can’t believe this came out in 2007, I don’t remember it but it must’ve sounded so dated and out of place. HM were pretty irrelevant by then
Meh , wasn’t feeling it in a Sunday First listen
Next 5 Songs played by my Spotify Algorithm: Julian Cope: An Elegant Chaos Dexy's Midnight Runners: Tell Me When The Light Turns The Auteurs - Lenny Valentino The Stone Roses - Fool's Gold James - Sit Down
I don’t care.
Not my gig
Just not a fan of this type of music.
Not my speed
Not terrible just boring.
Boring
Repetitief, ook de zangstijl steekt wat tegen
Weer fijne doorsnee jaren '80. Ik ga dit niet voor mijn plezier opzetten.
2-
Meh
Average. Everything sounded the same. Too long.
Meh, not wild about it. One of those albums I listen to and will never remember.
Me aburrió. Hay cantidad de álbumes así, post-puk new wave monótonos.
Listened Before? N Meh, didn't really stand out to me. It was ok mid-80s british pop rock. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Wrote for Luck
I am “bummed” with this album. It just really wasn’t anything special or interesting. It was a little annoying at times but just boring. Bring on better ones!!!
The pervasive commentary around this album seems to focus squarely on how drugged out the entire band were at all times. Which after listening in one sitting...definitely tracks. Just look at the perfect album cover - that *is* the album. It's really not terrible, but more disappointing - each song has some sort of melodic bent which would seem to be right in my wheelhouse but none of them go anywhere. It all just plays out as a ~38 minute* uniform stoned uptempo not very dynamic compressed dance rock rave. If that's your thing, hit it. 4/10 2 stars *I couldn't bring myself to for the 2 hour collector's edition which is all that Apple Music offers. That ecstasy trip is way too long for me.
I sense some potential in there, maybe, if not for the oppressive 80s-ness of it all. Gah, those generic drum and key sounds!
also have never heard of this band or album! -love a good british band -country song is very weird -it feels like a song trying to make fun of a country song which is funny -these lyrics are WACKY -i do like mad cyril -its all very ooooo and ahhhhhh 80’s music, not bad but not my favorite -this is a 2 star album for me just because its not really my thing and i wouldn’t listen to it again
Not sure this is worthy of the list, tbh - it's interesting from a historical perspective, as it shows what they were doing before they made the more Britpoppy stuff that was much better, but it's not an album you need to hear before you die, is it? It's way more 80s than their later stuff (understandably), but it sounds like a slightly tuneless, less tidy Pet Shop Boys album. 2/5.
a little strange
Not my cup of tea
I'd never heard of these guys so I was excited to listen to something new, but it just wasn't very good.
Uber 80s pop, not really my thing
Aight
Meh
Unremarkable garage-pop lo-fi
it’s disappointing how such an interesting backstory can result in such a boring album. this is replacement level 80s pop.
Nope... forgettable
Mediocre 80s
I listened to this album 3 times. I like the beats, it’s just indie/ experimental enough, the balance is good, I just can’t get myself to like it as a whole
Very bland. Everything’s got a a very washed out sound and blends together into an amorphous blob of an album. Saw it in a different comment: ecstasy is not a drug that makes good music
Weaker than Pills Thrills
Baggy (or "madchester") was England's sort of return to form after the post-punk and synthpop of the 80's. This was a result of the sound developed by New Order, which blended neo-psych style, alternative dance rhythms, and jangle pop riffs. Returning to traditional rock instruments with an increased focus on production and tone lead to a very rich-sounded genre. Bummed embodies much of that sound. Unfortunately, most of Bummed is uninteresting. Just doesn't do anything for me.
Meh. I had it on the in the background and immediately could tell that this wasn't something that I would enjoy. It wasn't awful enough for me to have to fast forward or skip songs, but this music is just not for me.
I guess it's music.. 3/10
It’s not TERRIBLE but it’s also not GOOD. The vast majority of songs sound exactly the same. This is a forgettable album, definitely not something one must listen to before they die. Worst songs: Country Song, Mad Cyril 2 stars
Yeah hmm not sure
Meh.
oh i get it, it's like punk but without the appeal
Humdrum. 2.5
upbeat rock. sounded a bit like inxs to me. i didn’t like it, i didn’t hate it… it was just there. twas just ok.

Fat lady wrestlers an ok song. Wouldn't listen again though.
Gonna need to hear this again to see if I can get beyond my first impression of postparty swampcore
Very forgettable.
This album was okay. I didn't mind it playing in the background while I worked on other stuff.
Var bra bakgrunnsmusikk når jeg leste
Meh
I can see how an eccy or two might improve this. It begins well - I enjoyed the opening 3 tracks - they are loud & quirky & well-produced, but once the Fat (or should I say “enormous”) Lady starts wrestling, it really is downhill - except for Wrote For Lunch, probably the standout track here. Side 2 is a real disappointment - I think somebody left the drugs at home.
In the immortal words of David St Hubbins, it's such a fine line between stupid and clever. And this band is right on that line. Were the Happy Mondays a bunch of ham-fisted, untalented, drug-addled chancers who stumbled into a music career as a cover for their ecstasy dealing, or were they the outsider poet geniuses of a new musical scene that melded indie and dance? Well, kind of both... I find Sean Ryder's loose and impressionistic lyrics both infuriatingly stupid and also full of fresh and surprising imagery. He can't really sing, but he can get the point across. The band are technically limited (and that's being a bit generous), and Martin Hammet's (final) production slathers everything in reverb and delays, which suits the dance-clubby vibe. Apparently, the band tried to manage Hammet's alcoholism by keeping him loaded on ecstasy. They didn't really have their own musical ideas: they pilfer and grab musical snippets from wherever, most notably the lift of Taxman for Lazy-Itis. But when they play back their magpie gleanings, they emerge in an idiosyncratic and unfiltered way that actually is something fresh. This accidental innovation is a mixture of lack of musical knowledge, carelessness, low inhibitions, and heavy drug use. I suspect this sounds great if you are off your head on acid. Some of the songs here are really rubbish (Lazy-Itis for example, which, believe it or not, is actually worse in the One Armed Boxer Remix, which is featured in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6otmccrb2c ). The Mondays really hit their straps just after the release of this album when they start teaming up with proper dance remixers like Paul Oakenfold, Vince Clark and Andy Weatherall to start producing really great dance versions, like the W.F.L. 12" or the Hallelujah Club Mix which came out shortly after this record. The dance production really highlights their strengths and covers up their weaknesses as a band (particularly the inept drumming). So, this album may be a musical turning point, but frankly, not the best representation of the curious and specific pleasures of the Mondays at their peak. I'm sure this was great in the Hacienda in 1989, but at the end of the day, all I can really hear is the drugs. So many drugs.
Kinda bland psych rock album, I don't really see the appeal
Slurred indie dance.
Meh, I really don't see what's special here
Nothing drew me in here. Sorry Bez.
Sounds like a mash-up between Falco and The Cure, with none of the good parts.
Bummer
Quit your bawling and go back to work.
Better than I thought, still worst than most post punk I heard
Generic post-punk, dance-punk exist and that's a great example of it. I can't see why it's here on the 1001. A few great songs and moments, tho.
À réécouter
Never grabbed me
Listened to this twice today. But I never got into it. Maybe because I listened on a Thursday? It's not bad. Just not for me. Not even enough to write a real review. Bummer.
idk, just not feeling it I guess.
Dated.
Just for name 2*
Country Song- 3 (Lots going on none of which make any sense) Moving In With- 4 Mad Cyril- 6 Fat Lady Wrestlers- 5 Performance- 5 Brain Dead- 7 Wrote for Luck- 6 Bring a Friend- 6 Do It Better- 2 Lazyitis- 3 Hallelujah- 4 Holy Ghost- 4 Clap Your Hands- 5 Rave On- 2 Boom- 7
boring. i find them boring.
So forgettable that I actually forgot I already listened to it when I went to review it lol. But I had some songs liked, so it must not have been thaaaaat bad
Honestly? Glad to see that my initial response to Happy Mondays was consistent with my second attempt. Quite dull and repetitive.
ei oikeun sano mitäaän tämä tas kerran. kuulostaa että muutama englanti ukko kasariluvulla päätti tehdä bändin kirjottaa muutama biisi ja äänittää jossain autotallissa. ei erityisen hyvä eikä erityisen huono. mielummin ottaisin paskan albumin kun tämän. näissä menee moti tähän albumi juttuun ku pistetään näitä täysin samankuuloisia ok bändejä tänne listalle... tylysä pylysä wrote for luck
Just another long, tired, and overdone 80s Brit synthpop album. I understand the conveners of the list lean largely British, but man am I tired of hearing the same repetitive synth/bass-line + wacky male vocals track over and over again. There were so many experimental and interesting ideas to be had in the 80s - is this really the best we can come up with as a representative of the era?
This was hard to listen too, maybe I just wasn't in the mood.
Only has the bloody 2h collectors addition. Gonna listen to 4 songs, if it sucks it goes off, if its good it stays on. Welcum to the gaunlet. It didn't do enough, but also wasn't asss bad as some reviews suggested. Solid 2 from the first 4 tracks....
Taas melkoinen ohilevy. Parhaimmillaankin keskinkertaista.
Ihan hauska. Potentiaalinen useemmalla kuuntelulla, mut ei niin hyvä, että sen tekis
You know just by seeing a name or an album you don't recognize that it's going to be 80s / 90s UK Britpop and the Happy Mondays Bummed continues that streak. I could go on my usual rant about the biases of the author(s) but I'll just check out with my usual, not a must listen to, but a decent album of the time. 2.5/5.
I wasn't expecting to dislike listening to this album, but I did. It picks up a bit around the second half of the album, but it's still not great. It's just slightly better than the first few songs. The songs are pretty boring and unsatisfying to listen to. They don't really change that much over the course of their duration. Some songs have something going for them, but, again, they don't develop. I actually didn't mind the singer's voice that much, but it doesn't do anything all that notable in any of these songs. My favourite song was Bring A Friend.
Solid 80s jammy jams
Britpop oder Britrock, der mich leider überhaupt nicht abholt...
Marcado estilo pop/electrónico de los 80, sin nada por lo que destaque especialmente. Pasable, sin más. Variedad de estilos para la misma canción también.
I want to like this.
Just don't get it.
meh
1/10, 10%
This is a sold meh from me.
Hey man, I'm glad you had fun jamming out while zooted, but this isn't good.
Seems like more of that sound 80's UK bands (The The, Primal Scream, etc.) were going after. I don't know so much about the psychedelic angle (except for the final track Lazy Itis), or what separates the sound of these guys from the other UK bands. I did not like it at all initially but by the end of the album I wasn't sure if I'd call it terrible. Still, I'm not going back for more, and I don't really know why it belongs on this list. Might be worth a 3 but I went the other way.
Drug-induced Duran Duran vibes. No big ebbs and flows through the album, essentially a unidimensional album in which any single track gives you the gist of the rest of the album.
I did not enjoy this much. On first listen, I found it unpleasant. On second it wasn’t as bad, but there was something about it that irritated me…maybe it was the way it sounded…
Skilled musicians and performers, no doubt, but overall for me this album suffers from the same element that tends to turn me off from psychedelic music from any era. I still can't describe quite so accurately, but it's rooted in that sense I get from music like this that the band is trying a bit too hard to be trippy. It's kind of like that sense of discomfort I get when I watch a comedian who is just so evidently, at least to me, really trying hard to be funny. Anyway, you get the idea. Not something I'll come back to, I don't think.
Album chiant + pochette dégueulasse
What is mediocrity?
And it's UK pub rock. What a surprise. Singer's voice has that annoying working-class English drunk quality to it. According to wiki they were high as kites so close enough I guess. Musically it isn't really truly bad, just dated, boring and its target demographic is far away from coastal Australia. But it's avoided rock bottom because a couple of these tunes could've had potential with an actual singer. 2/5.
While I get their significance in the Madchester Legend, thirty years on all I can hear is Special Brew INXS.
2.5 maybe? Someone needs to turn down the "80's special effects" knob here.
A mixed bag
It’s alright. I think it has a vibe of weird radio music in that it has some components that feel easy to listen to, such as the guitars, but the voice and overall feel of each song comes together in a way that makes it memorable but odd. Each song feels like the instruments are distant or ethereal in a sense, while the lyrics seem to be screamed at me. It makes an odd dichotomy that comes together in an album that seems rough around the edges. Favorite track: Mad Cyril
Nothing popped out. It was fine, but I'm not sure it's quite up my alley.
2.5
Madchester!!!
Meh 4/10
Nothing stood out for me in this album. The songs blended into each other one after another into the background with nothing that captured my interest
I have to give the album credit for having a good variety of sound to it. However I only think a couple of the songs I would choose to listen to again. There’s a lot of psychedelic funk sounds in the album that are unnerving to listen to.
Too much discordance, reverb, ambient noise, repetition... but since I had no expectation, can't say I was bummed. Missed getting the dreaded 1 star based on a couple of the songs being decent.
Normally I try to listen to each of these albums at least twice. But this was long and pretty sketchy, so only once.
Didn’t start too bad but it drags for so looong!
At least not dislike
Dnf. Uskoisin, jos joku väittäis tätä the Smithiksi. En osais sanoo, miten yksikään biisi menee, vaikka yhdenkin kuuntelu vielä kesken.
Not quite what I thought it would be. Some bangers from back in the day, but not as groovy and not quite as much fun as later albums would be
Very the cure!
The album has an 80s sound and the lyrics aren't that great. The songs are a little eccentric. Thankfully the album was relatively short. It is better than some of other 2s on this list. No need to listen to it again.
p592, 1988. 2.5 stars, not a 2 but definitely not strong enough for a 3. Suspect this is highly rated by people who were there at the time and are re-listening with psychedelic tinted headphones. For the rest of us... nothing to like or dislike. There are better Happy Mondays albums.
This sounds like The Cure trying to overcome a horrible hangover by taking a bunch of speed and ecstasy to power through it. I find the whole thing pretty grating but the worst element is definitely the singer's voice. He makes every song annoying with his strained wailing. So jaded it's dull.
I found this album to be a little long and overindulgent. While the music represents a specific scene it comes across as a bit to spot on, but lesser than. There is nothing that separates them from other bands of that scene (there were a few standout bands). I am not a big fan of the overuse of reverb and echo. The lyrics are also pretty dark. I did enjoy Lazyitis but mostly because it had me singing "Ticket to Ride" to a pretty good groove. All-in-all it is an okay album with a few good dance grooves and early Liverpool and Manchester influences. Favorite song: Wrote for Luck. 2 1/2 out of 5.
Not a lot to like about this album
We Brits have a strange affection for the Mondays dispute out of tune singing! Subsequent albums are much stronger, although I've always really enjoyed the remix of WFL and Hallelujah from the Bummed era. However, I really don't like the messy, over-crowded, distant sounding production. Bring on Step On, Kinky Afro, Loose Fit, Judge Fudge etc.
Couldn't get into them when they were around, and still can't. Just seems like lazy music.
Most songs seemed to blend together
A mess. Just about every instrument is drenched in reverb whilst being sloppy, too busy and perhaps overproduced. One thing I will say is that it’s consistent. The album has momentum and flows well throughout. But its all a mess. 2/5 - Won’t be listening again.
Ok
אלבום גרוע
I didn't know this band but they aren't my style.
idk
Let's be honest, the Happy Mondays were fun as a novelty circus, but not particularly good. Maybe this would sound amazing if I were to chug down a load of ecstasy, but that's not something I'm ever going to find out. 2.5/5
Terrible.
A day late with the band name but the album title is spot on for how I felt about this one. It wasn't terrible but that's two unnecessary albums this week.
Couldn’t get into the music or vocals.
Dull
It was fine. 2.5
Pretty meh alt brit album. The music doesn’t really work for me but for it being the late 80s, it does sound like it was ahead of its time. Album had more of a 90s alt/grunge album with some punk electro in it. It was ok just not my sound. 4.3/10
I wasn't crazy about them before and that hasn't really changed. I think I could tolerate a song of theirs every once in a while, but a whole album was honestly excruciating.
This is the second Happy Mondays album on the list, and I’m not really digging them. I much prefer the heavier version of this as heard in later PWEI
I got tired of this album pretty quickly. The sound wasn't bad but it wasn't interesting either and I was not a fan of the vocals at all. It sounded both unique and completely bland and mediocre at the same time
Bummed that I had to sit through this boring, unenthusiastic performance art. Ugh.
eh. 2.5. it's new wavy so I thought I'd like it but there was just something off for me, maybe the vocals.
meh. feels uninspired and uninteresting
Uninspired
Another one that’s highlighting how British biased this book is (duh author from UK) I just had another happy mondays album a couple of days ago so unlucky RNG from the site. I don’t know that I’ll genuinely give this the shot it might get in a few weeks. The meh is still hard from the last one.
18th August 2021 Listened in bits and pieces and finished off on the way to meet sav for a pint in Victoria. If at a festival, house party etc then this would be banging. Difficult when you're just listening to it.
This psychedelic funk album was pretty groovy. Its genre can also be described as Madchester - which is indie dance music from Manchester during the 80's. The music was mixed well and a few of the songs stood out, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this album. Fun fact: this album was entirely recorded while every band member & producer were high on ecstasy.
Inget för mig
I feel there are better albums by better bands with this same sonic approach. I found myself hating the singer.
It's not actively horrible to listen to like some of the other albums we've had so far, but it really isn't pleasant in any sort of way either. I guess some of the instrumentation and song structures (particularly the funk-influences in the guitar lines and bass) could be interesting if it weren't all so dissonant, so droning, and covered by the off-putting vocals.
Quite like them as a band, don’t mind this as an album, but lacks bangers and unlikely to revisit
Instantly forgettable
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Mad Cyril Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Jumbled and overlapped beats and rhythms. No thanks. 1.5
Best lekker even, krijg alleen die zanger met de sambaballen nooit meer uit mijn hoofd als ik nummer van hun hoor.
Not bad, but there was nothing special about it either.
its ok at best, 2 listens in
Meh
Mja, niet mijn ding
Not sure "maybe the first album made on E" makes this album noteworthy of being on this list. I think this album really shows the brit-rock bias of this list. Close to being decent for me but something is scratchy almost about most songs throws me off. 2.5 but rounding down
WTF - they give us the Happy Monday’s on Tuesday morning? Let’s focus people! Mostly soundalike 80s art pop. I did like the riff and beat on ‘Wrote for Luck’. 2 stars.
Incredibly middle of the road and forgettable. I don't think I've come across an album on this list yet that I have had less of an opinion of. I literally finished it less than 60 seconds ago and I have forgotten it entirely. At least Slipknot was memorably bad.
Kinda weird sounding
Pop suave. Reguero
I read the first line of the wiki page and already felt exhausted about listening to another english alt band. Tried to give it an honest shot, but found myself skipping to the next song about 3/4 through every track. I'd love to hear what someone loves about this album cuz it just isn't there for me. Lazyitis was the best track, and only partially because I knew it was the last one.
Was fine. Had the “Money Money Money” bass line at the end of the album.
Ok, but lacked the fun of Pills & Thrills
Not good
This album sounds pretty cool but a lot of the songs didn’t grab me, probably something to come back to tho
2,5/5
Really not feeling this one. Sort of short album that feels like it goes on forever. The music isn't that enjoyable. Feels very jam-y which isn't up my alley.
This is some really classic bad 80s music. I did not enjoy this, however, I think they could have made it worse.
Saltine crackers and Heinz yellow mustard.
Not for me
Not sure? At least it’s seriously not the 60’s. Um. Wtf? No. I was just subjected to some six or seven 60’s “cannon” albums and this? Oh, I see. I was supposed to be on molly. Well, I’m not and this sucks. What is remarkable is this was recorded and pressed and people apparently bought the albums. I DID make myself listen to the WHOLE thing. I can say it IS consistent. Consistently bad. All - the - way - to - the - last - track. The best thing I can say about it: it’s over. 1 Boolean: FALSE - were the editors on molly when they included this or what? Really, what was the reasoning? I am actively holding back the expletives.
There is so much going on in this album but simultaneously nothing there
Waaaaay too much reverb. Also, their lyrics are dumb. This was just more fluff that this list tries to pass off as something cool.
This album just didn’t resonate for me, I finished it early in the day and then panicked later in the afternoon that I hadn’t listened to it only to go onto Spotify to show that I had indeed listened to it. So not a very memorable album
Too bad can’t rate 0
3 songs in, and I'm out, wtf is this moaning
Not very good. One star Songs sound all the same Ryder’s voice isn’t good. Ska influenced but not as good as original ska. Celebrate safe drugs like heroin. Good influence on young people. Supposed to be dance music. Really! I am bummed by the Happy Mondays
Too many 2/5 star ratings in the popular reviews going too easy on this album. It’s cacophonous, annoying, and phoned-in. This is a filler submission. Don’t listen to this album. 1/5
#401 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ / ✅, partly yes Revisit? ❌ 80's UK club culture, even in the beginning of the rave scene and later in the 90's, is not for me. Happy Mondays has always sounded like drunken cunts making fun of someone elses music to me. It's not a great listen. Even "Pills 'n Thrills and Bellyaches" sounds like that to me. Not a fan. 1/5
Would I listen again: no This was so boring I just kept blocking it out instead of listening to it
I hated this.
No private session used for Spotify. I got a bit anxious when I found out this album had a runtime of over 2 hours, so I found the original album's track list and kept to that. I am so glad I did because this album bummed me out, I hated the singer's moans over the directionless music. This album was apparently fueled by the drug ecstasy, which explains why this album is such crap and I would have to think the creators of this list were on the same drug when they decided I had to hear it before I died.
Overly long, every song sounds identical, felt like distinct lack of creativity.
Initial thoughts, "Oh No, this is a 2hr album". Up to Brain Dead so far and this isn't bad. Nothing great yet though. Ok, i finished the album, and man that got tedious. 6 Wrote for Luck and 5 hallelujahs later and I was just done. It might just be on Spotify, but that repetition decreased a 3 to a 1 for me.
Absolute trash music. If drugs are so much fun, why is this album so horrible?
2/10 Need to listen
The only exciting thing about this album is that I finally get to rate something a 1. Yay! Lucky me! Tedious and overlong, which was especially offensive when I'm convinced this was the same song on loop for 50 minutes??? This is like you're friends roommate's boyfriend's band that you occasionally have to pretend don't suck to keep the peace. If you're album's main claim to fame is that it's the first ecstasy-fueled album (which... no it's not), maybe it shouldn't be on this list?? Just a thought.
Bruh...this was fuckin ass.
Absolutely garbage and absolutely too long to be this bad.
Listened in the car. A blend of two of my least favourite genres from one of my least favourite eras of British music. Some of the instrumentals were okay but I really didn't enjoy this whole package. Not for me.
Despite there being not a great deal of difference between this and their other album on here, I really did not like this one. It's depressing, but in the way that makes it sound dreary and pathetic. Pills 'n' Thrills had that upbeat sound to it that made it much better to listen too. The bass was better in that record too.
I could have done without this.
Meh...
More British slop? Oh, you shouldn't have!
Despite the attempt to add something new with the psychadelic into this basic brit pop, it still isn't very good. I'm becoming increasingly annoyed at some of these and the bias of the author, and I swear to god if we get to the end and there's no Rush, CSNY, or Hip I'm going to lose it. Everything sounds the same, nothing is super interesting, I'm not on the terrible British ditch weed and aerosol needed to enjoy this. This one was a struggle.
mmmm
Me cansó un poco.
Ei
In one ear and out the other. Made zero impression.
British bias again, it seems. Another middling UK band from the late 80s/early 90s. Not terrible, but just kinda . . . forgettable?
pretty annoying another English rock band... Eighties music bad
Not my type and I think they definitely have taken too much drugs during the creation of this
I... really don't know what to make of this. Country Song is a miss, but Moving In With has a funky bassline which I appreciate, alongside a strange buzzing noise. Mad Cyril is... alright? Something just feels off about this stuff, but it's a bunch of competent enough 80s sounding rock (?) songs. Not sure all the sampled voicals help. Everything sounds flat to me, as if they're slightly out of tune. I find it less and less tolerable as the record progresses. I'm sure there's a time and place for everything, but what that would be is unclear to me. Bummed I had to listen to this.
3/10 - don't recall one song, forgettable
Really struggled to find a single song I liked
Spot on with the title.
Have to admit, I saw the 2 hour run time and listened to half of the first song and thought “nope, can’t do this”.
I have always found the Happy Mondays fairly average, and Bummed did not really change that opinion. I can completely understand why Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches made the list. That album has the big, undeniable hits like Step On and Kinky Afro. Bummed, on the other hand, feels like a much less focused version of the band and lacks those standout moments. There are flashes of the groove and attitude that would define the Madchester sound, but across the album it feels inconsistent. At times it drifts into fairly ordinary pop rock territory, and the occasional country twang in the arrangements feels strange rather than interesting. Instead of sounding experimental, it often just feels unfocused and a bit dull. Ironically, some of the tracks I enjoyed most were on the later collector’s edition rather than the original album itself. Favourite songs: Mad Cyril and Fat Lady Wrestlers Least favourite song: Country Song Album artwork: A cool cover that captures the late 80s Madchester aesthetic
Bummer
This is just plain bad. It's like if Wesley Willis was a white british guy at the bar drinking and making up babbling lyrics over mediocre backing instruments.
Forgettable madchester garbage.
Ugh
