Reviews (page 2 of 7)

A fun one! It felt a bit dated but it was still quite likeable. Fun instrumentals with fitting vocal work. 'Mdc vendredi' was my fave.

Hypnotic

While I'm not sure what the other people in my group will think, I do know that I am just a Sucker for this late 90's to early 2000s electronic music, so it's getting Solid 5 Stars for me.

I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump up to an extremely generous 5, if only because I really liked it. It’s a little harder to write about electronica / dance stuff like this, even for my VGM-pilled brain, because I’m just really locked into each track while listening, trying to get a feel for the composition, the intentions of the production, and trying to encase myself in the mood and atmosphere and vibe of each track. It makes it harder to judge the album as an entire front to back project, cause my brain treats it more like a YouTube playlist, and I can’t really tell which way is the best approach for an album like this. With that said, I did enjoy a lot of these tracks here – only two of them really fell flat for me (Disco II disco & Damaged people), but the other 11 all range from “totally fine” to “pretty good” to “great”. I do think this album tends to settle a bit, and doesn’t really pull out the most of its soundscapes and production on a number of tracks, but they’re usually still enjoyable enough to listen to that I can just ignore it. Instead of any track to track analysis, I’ll just give some bits and pieces of what I wrote down while listening, and I think it should give a good sense of how diverse I thought this album was. “90s arcade high score music that gets a little annoying after a bit” “Vulfpeck-y bass guitar and some Phil Collins sounding drums” “Huge ‘Sweet Dreams Are Made of This’ energy, while giving C64 keygen vibes and a bit of the Sonic Heroes Special Stage music” “DDR / Beatmania adjacent vibes, a Ghostbusters feel to the guitar, with big ‘Whoa I’m In Space Cuba’ energy” “Namco-esque synths and a big Eye of the Tiger style buildup” “Wario learned how to use a talkbox” “Sonic CD but not as funky” “Face to Face drums with a grimey SEGA Genesis bassline sound” I suppose if I really wanted to distill it down, it’s just 80s inspired electronica with a lot of VGM sensibilities. Ultimately, this is a pretty good hour of synth-pop / electronica / whatever the fuck genre this is – I was sort of hoping for more UK house type stuff, but I’m not at all opposed to this. Is it an album I needed to listen to before I died? Eh, probably not. Am I glad I did? Yeah, absolutely. This album pulled from a lot of soundscapes and styles I really enjoy, and to hear it in this form, with this general production, really clicked for me. I’m certainly being a bit generous with a 5 here, but I was just locked in to every track, and I can’t say that for every album we’ve gotten so far. I just thought it was a really fun listen – It felt compelling, and each track felt unique in their own way, so it never got stale for me. Hence, the 4.5 bumped up to a generous 5. I can totally hear how someone might get a 2 out of this, though.

De dancebeats in de jaren '90. Veelal of heel rauw of juist heel relaxed.

incredible album

If you’re a girly who really leaned into 💚Brat Summer™️💚 like me, you’ll probably adore Darkdancer, an album of front-to-back ironic/iconic club classics. Otherwise? I mean, sorry you’re lame, I guess…😬😬😬

What a fantastic, novel electronica sound!!!

Fantastic electro funk pop

Is it possible that my memory of this album was blurred by my having it on in the background while I took a Covid-induced nap? Perhaps. But damn if it wasn't an amazing nap.

Electronic dance from the end of the 20th century. Had forgotten how good this album is.

Absolutely loved this. The energy, the beat, the sound. Cannot fault it. Made me want to go clubbing all over again and hit the dance floor. Uplifting feelgood stuff. Good mixture of acid house hip hop and electronica. Brilliant

Rating: 10/10

Would have been super cool if it had all the songs on it, only had like 6 songs the rest were banned by spotify I guess who knows

Extraño el internet de antes.

Very cool, very dancable

When they finally release GTA 6 this will be the music I'll drive around town to.

So underrated. This was Daft Punk, except it loved 80s pop instead of 70s disco. Even men with hearts of stone will bop to these tracks.

Þessi plata er bara algjörlega frábær! Ég tók double take á ártalið þegar ég hlustaði á fyrsta lagið, hélt hún hlyti að vera ca 10 árum eldri. En svo fékk ég svaka mikið Disclosure vibe í mörgum lögum. Hef grun um að þeir hafi samplað talsvert frá þessu bandi! Og nú verð ég bara að hlusta á Disclosure!

Really nice electronic dance album with strong tracks and cool sounds!

Great for a run

Buen album pero idk if its my cup of tea. Would give it a second listen.

crazy that these guys are so unknown. This was a great listen

Ah a nice straight French (I guess!) EDM album. Like a more dancey Daft Punk. What's not to like! Vocal samples come from a range of soul, RNB, funk, and hip-hop. It sounds a bit quaint by today's standards, but it makes you wanna dance so it's doing its job! In places the chord choices are almost jazzy. Gets quite moody and atmospheric in Damaged People Best track - Dreamin, Hypnotise, Jaques You Body 4 stars - I think it sounds simple but there is more than meets the eye going on regarding harmonies and textures, and it's so catchy

I was certain that I was going to hate this, because I pretty much hate all of the euro electonic music from the 90s. But this was pretty sick. Its kind of cheesy and weird, but its totally intentional. Its like playing on the goofiness and cheese of the late 80s / early 90s, but its not that far removed so it kind of feels like its part of the same scene or at least winking at its not to far distant contemporaries. I definitely felt myself grooving and nodding along throughout this. I kind of had a blast with this. Its hard to hate on. Is that Robert Pattinson on the album cover???? Cedric noooooo!!!!

Techno techno. Must say quite like. Good beats and very catchy. As another reviewer said would never have listened to this but for the 1001. Really enjoyed this.

Loved the high energy in all these tracks. While still quite repetitive in the right context I could really groove to these tracks. On a hot summer day not as much but still really enjoyed it.

Actually a pretty fun listen

Lot of fun stuff on here, nice upbeat electro

Distilled y2k/gen x soft club aesthetic

A disco ball in the dark, this album is a dance floor of shadows and neon hues. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Dreamin' - Music Makes You Lose Control - (Hey You) What's That Sound? - Sometimes

I was fully ready to make a 'we've got Daft Punk at home' joke, but I actually really enjoyed this. So, I'll just have to save it in case there are any other dance acts pretending to be French on the list.

leuk!!

really fun to move to

An early example of EDM being nostalgic? Eighties sounds, nineties production but with an inevitable seventies disco and funk root. Whatever, it works. The cover art represents it perfectly.

surprisingly good!

honestly ahead of its time, like it a lot

So dang cheesy.

Pleasantly surprised by this. Music made me lose control

Reminded me of Girl Talk mashups & Dance Dance Revolution playlists. I like the French house/ daft punk-esque sound. Using the metric of bobbing along, and graded on the curve of never actually hearing this before, I loved this. Had a lot of recognizable bits and samples, and even the ones i didn't know were catchy. Only thing that brought it down is that some songs and the album runtime dragged after awhile and became repetitive. but a little repetition can be fun if you are in the mood. Maybe it's just me but i feel like Max Martin and Katy Perry ripped off the outro to "California Gurls" from "About Funk"

Its tacky, its corny, but if thats your thing it does it well. Didnt hate it not my style but for what it does its objectifly good

This record is a portal to another time of chrome and optimism. The production is wonderful and the lyrics nonsensical in the best possible way. The cover art looks like something spray painted on the side of a carnival attraction. The kinda music you'd expect to play during an early 2000's snowboarding game that you let play in the background while you do your homework or play with your bionicles, because it's just that rad. Not all these points might sound positive, but they actually are, because it all just fits. Not all music needs to be a high-brow intellectual affaire. This record doesn't try to be deep and it succeeds. For that and just the sheer quality and dancability I'll afford it no less than a 8/10. Fav are Music Makes You Lose Control (which is actually older than the Missy Eliot song, neaT) & Jacques your body

What an incredibly fun album, it almost feels like a parody of itself, but in a good way. I got strangely nostalgic due to this album, but not for music of this era/album, but instead by music made by people who listened to this music

A survey of electronic dance music at the time. It’s production is dated but its charm over comes it.

Really good, very long though and includes lots of remixes of tracks already in the album

My vibe and 4+

This is what people in the 80s thought music would be like in the future, like in the year 2099. Its the type of music that would be played in a club scene in the film Robocop or Bladerunner or something. I can't stress enough that this is not a bad thing, I'm totally here for it. (also went to watch them on an NME tour with Campag Velocet and Coldplay back in the day and they were awesome)

Had never heard of this but then I read the bloke (who is called start and from reading….) wrote a load of Confessions on the Dancefloor and that made a lot of sense because this is full of BOOPS

8/10 - Really loved this album out of no where. Not something I traditionally listen to but the songs were so interesting and i felt like i was riding the wave. Second half of the album not as strong as the first however

I actually liked it, surprisingly so

Kinda groovy, better than expected!

This was dope. Cool to hear songs that have been sampled so widely and see where they came from

Note : 4 À réécouter : Oui

Pretty decent dance album, enjoyed it more than I was expecting

I loved this, so I assume Jordan hated it. Although even for me, certified electronica lover, I was a bit over it by the end of the second album.

Did enjoy this, feels very of its time. Reminds me of A level music tech which is very nostalgic and nice. Not sure when i'd listen to it again, maybe a retro party. Had a look up of the producer and can see he went on to some pretty cool stuff. Giving it a 4 cos i think i'd go back to it

Great dance songs! Got me moving in my chair at work. Would throw on for a party for sure

I feel like i could have a crazy one person dance party to this. Would go hard in a club if i was drunk and willing to bop around. The reviews did not lie tho - this guy picks one line and repeats that shit till the song is over. The beat is pretty repetitive as well which makes for good dance music but perhaps not good listening music.

I like. Was super solid but tapered off near the end

When you are happy to listen to the bonus second disc of remixes, you know this has got you. I didnt listen to this first time around, but it still hit me with a wave of nostalgia. It seems to be a perfect distillation of club music of this era and i was 18 when this came out so it hits hard. The production is good, but its the ability to perfectly replicate and blend so many of the sounds and vibes of the time that makes this stand out. It doesnt take itself seriously but its a great album as its a proper time capsule.

i wish i was high on m0lly in a club in the 90’s listening to this

It may not necessarily be an album I needed to hear, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I had a fun time and will happily return to that. Very cool reading into all of his collaborations. He helped produce some of the biggest and my favorite songs on Future Nostalgia. Rating: 4.3

One of the better dance albums I've heard. Recognized a lot of things they sampled or ending up being sampled later on. Good vibes

I was floored by how many samples I recognized and enjoyed immensely despite this not being a genre I gravitate towards. A very fun listen.

I actually liked it, great as background work music

Good fun, enjoyed it

I dig it

Man. Music is weird sometimes. This album has pretty much no information about it on Wikipedia other than “The creators of the book apparently liked it enough to put it in.” It’s got an extremely low rating on the site, most notably due to being an obscure repetitive French Electronica album. And you know what… I kind of loved it. Like, a lot. Bonus points for the meme song “Music makes you lose control”, which is going to be stuck in my head again for another week at the bare minimum, if not longer. Anyway, yeah it’s repetitive and extremely goofy, but this is the kind of thing I could just have on in the background for hours and still jam the hell out. It accomplishes everything it sets out to do well, and for being made in the 90’s, it’s actually pretty ahead of its time. I think if this came out like 10 years later it would have been more popular. Doesn’t have any moments I want to skip. It’s just under an hour also, which is the perfect length for Electronica. I’ve said in just about every review of this genre that it’s pretty hard to mess up, and I think that Darkdancer does a great job here. Favorite song on this one has to be “Hey you what’s that sound?”. Every song on this album is catchy, but that’s by far the catchiest of all of them. There were also quite a few songs here that I recognized as background elements to other songs, or entire songs that have been remixed by other bands completely, again see “Music makes you lose control” for the best example of the ladder. Always cool to see the origins of other notable tracks. A few albums have been like that so far. To summarize and go back to the top of the review, music is weird. No way I’d be able to find this album on my own. I loved every second of it, and it’s going to join my personal Electronica rotation now. More of this please!! Link very much related. (https://youtu.be/z9aBlC-n94gsi=vy2xWBGUNOjKVBmL).

4th 4 in a row for me. Like the other albums I just had, high peaks but a bit of filler stopping it from getting to 5.

Dragged a little in the middle, but started and ended very strong. Sometimes made me want to listen to Depeche Mode, so I'll go do that now.

Still don't like the skits, but damn do the tracks slap.

It is not very often that I can look at the cover of an album and know I'm going to dislike it. I will plead to my better angels and will plan to give the album a shot. It's not very often I can look at the name of the artist and the name of the album and know it doesn't matter because I'm going to hate it. I, again, plead to my better angels and just ignore the picture on the cover and literally everything I am seeing visually. I'll give the album a spin with an open mind. I'm glad I did, because this was not as abrasive and shitty as I had anticipated. The entire album was not on Spotify so I had to listen on YouTube. The first track comes in with some keyboards that caught my attention, mostly because it didn't sound shitty. I thought it would. Dreamin' wasn't bad and the songs (overall) aren't as long as I thought they may be. There are a lot of repeated phrases and some of the songs sound stuck in the late 90's to me. That's pretty much a staple of this kind of music. It falls off a bit towards the end and I do not generally like music such as this. What Darkdancer does differently is it uses bass (probably not a real bass, of course), keyboards and guitar as part of the song rather than rely only on a thumping drumbeat. Some of my favorite tracks were: Dreamin' Soft Machine Hey You (What's that Sound?) Take a Little Time Sometimes (my favorite song on here) Jacque

The Good: A polyglot knows what this is about! The Bad: We aren’t all poly-wants-a-cracker… The Ugly: Not understanding what a darkdancer means… and I don’t want to seem insensitive here… I am playing catch up on rating albums, which means that I am listening to several albums in a row, and this one just kind of hit the right spot today… I can’t recall what I thought about this album the first time I heard it, however, today, I would argue that I would want to have this album in my “party albums” list for sure. There’s not a single moment when you’d think “okay, this is getting ridiculous”, the beats just keep coming, the groove is just tight enough not to be constrictive… and then there’s the multitude of musical influences from rock, to rap, to RnB to you name it. My real gripe with this album is that spotify only has the “extended” version available and I am not ready for remixes of this album… Technically I should give this album a 4*… fuck it...

Can't really fault it, it feels like dance music from a PS2 game. It got me and the old ball and chain dancing in the office on a Thursday morning. Not all the songs were great, but enough of them were very fun and made me enjoy the album a lot.

Oh, boy - I'm sure this one's going to go over like a lead balloon with this crowd... Having lived in a college town in France in 1999, I can confirm that this is an apt example of what was playing at the time - everywhere. For lost and confused university kids at the turn of the century, this totally resonated. For middle-aged adults just trying to get through their album of the day, probably not so much. For what it is - specifically, a late 90s time capsule of Euro dance music - I think it's a good representative of its genre, and I personally enjoyed most of it.

Cut from the same cloth of diversión que un disco de Daft Punk. Es goofy af. Me encantó.

I enjoyed this. Club music can be wildly inventive and forward looking but this also falls into predictable and expected for its time territory. It sort of feels like AI made it. Again, still very digestible, and it didn’t rub me in any wrong way. It will grow on me with time. I just discovered that this is Stuart Price and it makes more sense now. He made Hung Up and Confessions on a Dance Floor with Madonna, an album that is also good, at times great, but not revolutionary.

Well hey, this guy was born the day before I was. Neat! This was a lot of fun and a bouncin' body rocker. Extra points for the dance party.

Not a bad electronica album. Repetitive, but not annoyingly so. Could enjoy this in the right mood. 4/5

From the first sound on the first track I already knew how this album was gonna be and it didn’t disappoint. I don’t know why I thought dance music has evolved already in 1999 but this album sounds more late 80s/early 90s. Favorite songs: Music Makes You Lose Control, About Funk

10/23/25. Another cool discovery! Definitely a dance/electronic album that feels timeless, but makes you feel young. I'll definitely revisit.

Pretty fun and clearly an influence on stuff that came later in the big electro revival. A few tracks were a bit repetitive but it’s all very slick and well made

Figata dio cane

Everybody wants to get down like that.

vocabulaire, dictionnaire

A lot of fun and good dance music. Apart from "Disco II Disco", I enjoyed the album. It's not groundbreaking or very important and probably shouldn't be on this list, but it's still good. Doing this 1001 albums thing has made me appreciate electronic music a lot more than I thought I would. Also, sick album cover.

Pretty great dance album. Has some duds but that's dance music for you. Music makes me lose control. Side note. I love the cover. It looks like ai with the glow, the way the buildings are tipping in different directions, the way the hands look kind of weird and over accessorized. Also, it looks like a pepsi ad, the DJ handing you a pepsi and cracking it open and the music comes out. It's awesome and I think it kind of reads like this is the world in a commercial. Listen to this music and you can pretend life is simple, all your friends are here and all you need to be happy is some wicked tunes and this refreshing pepsi.

From the cover to the content this absolutely encapsulates late 90's european dance music. It's repetitive but there are enough layers to it to not make it monotonous, and it's a dance album. You're not there to listen to it contemplatively, you're there to get up and move. I unabashedly enjoyed this. I miss the old bigbeat/breakbeat style that this has and how corny it could get without giving a shit. This is fun. I liked all of it, even though I had to find it on youtube because spotify only has the first 20 minutes or so.

I see the album cover and right away I really REALLY doubt this is one of the top albums of all time. It looks like Robert Pattinson decided to be a DJ. But I have to put aside first impressions. We are here for the music. So up against any other music genre other than techno, this album fails miserably. Like there was a pissing contest with the goal to not get pee on yourself and this guy decided to turn around and piss in the wind. Isolated, I actually enjoy it. I enjoy the beats more than anything. Lyrically there are times he tries too hard to be edgy and then there are times he just doesn’t care and writes in a simple form. Like, I like this more than Moby. How much do I like Moby? I cannot say. I have no choice cut really. It all feels the same yet it’s different enough to be good. Fuck it, Choice cut: Hypnotize

i love to dance i love music i love paris i love blanket i love to sleep in paris

This one is pretty fun, I can appreciate it for what it is! I’d give a 4 star to it for the beats and some fun melodies, but can’t sit and just listen to it. Maybe in the right setting it could be a 5.

Clearly created by someone who understands grooves, hooks and the power of a great bass line. Not all songs hit, but those that do are really well written. The production is quite basic to my taste (stock drums, sparse soundscape and preset-sounding sounds), but the songwriting more than makes up for it. Some songs are literally annoying to listen to, I was considering deducting a star for the 2-3 bad songs, but i'll just pretend that the album didn't contain them.

I’m a sucker for a good techno funk album.

heavy breakbeat techno dance album.

- I enjoyed this way more than I should have, all things considered - some of the vocal stylings and maximalist sound effects are very silly and dated in a way that Daft Punk's Homework still manages to not be, but the line is thin - "ain't that fresh, everybody want to get down like that" right next to a Buffalo Springfield lyric is certainly a choice, but I can dig it - the textures and layering are all over the place, like a fun parfait of sound - when the unique stylings of frosted-tip electro-pop from the early 2000s become solidly retro and therefore cool again in another five years, this will be very, very fun to revisit but this challenged me in a fun way. I suspect that those who did not like this album with a passion and rated it poorly here are not fans of the genre (I'm also largely not), but I posit this: it's not exactly fair to judge this (or any) album using criteria that don't pertain to what it's trying to be or accomplish in the first place. this is a house/dance album: repetition and that "uns uns" sound is as part of the genre as distorted guitars are to rock or metal music. this is not inherently radio-friendly music (and perhaps not even headphone-friendly) because it wasn't created for that listening environment. but outside of the everyday meat and potatoes I'm used to, there are still both great and meh goat curries -- and this is, musically speaking, some enjoyable curry I'd order again.

Best Eurodance I've ever heard. Surprisingly sophisticated, incredibly groovy. Absolutely will listen again.

I had never heard of this band before, but this was a lot of fun.

3.5*/5 [08.15.2025] 01.16.2026

Surprised how much I liked this. Upbeat, funky and insanely catchy dance tunes. Insubstantial maybe but great in the moment.

4/5. A great dance album. Throw any of these songs in the club and we moving the floor. This album is great to give as much attention I give when dancing, which is not a lot but it seems to accomplish that goal well. Adding some unique sounds along with the "in your face" beat creates simple but engaging music. It is definitely inspired by Daft Punk's Homework but feels fresh and hyper-produced instead of muddy, and from a basement. Neither is bad, each enjoyable in their own space. Just like Homework, I'm not listening to it every day but its enjoyable for sure. Best Song: Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat), Hypnotise, (Hey You) What's That Sound?

First song, danceable rhythm. Tap my feet. Not following lyrics but enjoy the upbeat pace. PROBABLY 3.75 SO GIVE IT A 4

i can tell this isn't like, an AMAZING album by any stretch, but i'll be damned if i didn't enjoy it. good beats, funky synths and bass, classic 1999 album art, and a buffalo springfield interpolation? sign me UP favorites: dreamin, music makkes you lose control, soft machine, (hey you) what's that sound?

I didn't expect to like this but it was actually pretty cool.

The song construction is not especially original, but this particular Y2K-is-near sound texture rubs me exactly the right way. A tasteful je ne sais quoi. 3.9

honestly iconic

Cool album, nice electronic music, very enjoyable. Late 90s at its best.

That was a cool new discovery. I'm a fan.

awesome music, i can't even lie, i love loopy house like music for ever and ever. i just wonder, why THIS album. i know so many other albums in a similar vibe which have a better grasp on the genre which are better which aren't on here (like cassius omg)

Apparently I had listened and liked a track from this a while ago but never deep dove into the full album. This was a fun listen (with irregular capitalizations) that provided energy throughout. Highlights included "Music makes you lose control," "Sometimes," and "Mdc vendredi."

Don't let the cover fool you—this album is an hour of club bangers that'll have you moving, whether you want to or not. I was completely prepared to dismiss this as yet another UK Dance record I would forget about the next day, but instead, I was greeted with incredibly solid and at times, hypnotizing beats that almost reminded me of everyone's favorite French electronic duo. Are the dated elements of 90s-2000s Dance there? Of course, but I got past them pretty quickly.

Pop the top on this effervescent synthesis of disco electronica and let the fizzy funk flow.

I like this. It said "don't dream too hard, just dance" and then laid out some nice beats

at least the beats are interesting

Surprisingly good.

🎧I swear the first two tracks on here are good and then it alternated good/bad for the remainder of the album. For so many users this 1001 project is about discovery and I’m no exception. Darkdancer was a strong and exciting new listen for me. Speaking of Discovery, you can definitely hear some Daft Punk in here and I’m sure the robots were influenced by Les Rythmes (who is an English guy, not French…rather misleading name). Some nice trancey and vibrant techno that sounds ahead of its time for 1999, but plenty of retro 80s sounds in here too. Favorite tracks: Dreamin’, Hypnotise, Take a little time, About funk, Damaged people.

Really surprised to see this on here. Not because it's not great (it is), but I thought it was a bit too niche for this Americanized list. Haven't listened to it for ages but it holds together brilliantly. It could lose a couple of tracks (Soft Machine, Damaged People) but moves so quickly it just about gets away with it. 80s sounds are everywhere now but there was nothing uncooler in 1999 than trying to sound like you were from the 80s. Stuart Price really bucked the trend here, totally did his own thing and ended up spearheading the 80s revivial, ultimately ending up with him producing Madonna. She was lucky as he is a brilliant producer and had the midas touch for about a decade, starting with this.

I truly dug this album, enjoyed it much more than I was expecting. It’s had a serious 1980s Euro Synth New Wave Pop esthetic. It reminded me of early Daft Punk without being overly repetitive, or 25% more annoying. This may not be for everyone but I’m glad this list introduced me to this album.

A fun ride, felt current enough, even though I'm not well versed in the genre. Knew 3 or 4 songs allready. That could mean I heard them in a commercial or they were played on the radio. Considering France is a neighbour could be we had some fallout. Don't overanalyze this one and just have fun.

Not usually my style but actually pretty good for background music. Pretty chill.

A pretty good album, I enjoyed the music style. I liked Hypnotize the most.

i am not really electronic music predisposed, but man this one really surprised me! a lot of the tracks here are fun, danceable, and groovy. i was genuinely floored listening to the first handful of tracks because it does feel unlike most electronic music i have heard. this album does run into a common problem i have with a lot of electronic music, where it does fall back on some repetitive and more boring motifs, but when this album is really cooking, it is a blast to listen to.

A great listen - I'd never heard of LRD before this, but found some of the songs on this record to be really familiar so they must have made a splash. At times this felt like old school LCD Soundsystem and Daft Punk - I can only imagine that these guys were all listening to each other. What a moment in time. Will definitely revisit this

Albums like this give me such an appreciation for this list. You listen to Darkdancer and can clearly hear the influences to 2000s euro dance music (Daft Punk, Justice) and see that it was inspired by Dare by The Human League (which itself was likely inspired by Kraftwerk). All of these artists and bands are on this list, and I feel like I have a much more complete view of some of these genres. This album is really interesting and engaging. It's only downsides are that some of the songs are a tad repetitive and go a bit too long. Other than that it's fun and I appreciate it. 4/5

For the reviews that criticized this for being repetitive . . . correct. This is electronic dance music. That's kind of the point. For dance music, this album displays a lot musicality and variety. 3.5/5.0: Very Good.

well produced album with a ton of variety as well as great samples. not really my style but i prefer this to other stuff i've heard from the genre

first listen i actually thought this was super classic and fun

Lopetettiin 12. Biisiin nimeltä Damaged people.... conceptual..

That was cool!

I don't know this album, but it's 90s euro-pop, so I'm bound to like it. Turns out I've actually heard a lot of these songs before, and Jacques Lu Cont (who I do know, mainly in his remixing capacity) has an absurd amount of aliases. Now one of the great things about music is that it can burrow into your sense memory to take you back to the moment you listened to it, many years later. But that is also one of the terrible things, because sometimes the moment is bad! Anyway - that's not this album's fault. Lowlights: 'Soft Machine' (bad lyrics!), the fact that a 'Juicy'/'(Hey You) What's That Sound?' mashup is gonna be stuck in my head for the foreseeable future Highlights: all the rest ('About Funk' & 'Sometimes' especially)! yep, even the quacky 'Disco II Disco' :>

I thought this was so cool. Very 90s raver music from an artist I hadnt heard of but several tunes were very familiar. Blend of UKG, trip hop, acid house & more

Love the beats and organ music. Want to dance the whole time

22/1089 - Fun and catchy. It would be nice if songs had B sections/more variation instead of pretty much removing or adding parts. Voice is good and some effects were cool to hear.

I loved this. I don't like the references to Lucifer, however so I have it 4 stars

The opening bars of Dreamin' really hit. Wait a minute, is this album actually really good? Ok it gets a bit in your face, but I don't hate that. Tracks like MDC Vendredi feel like dubstep precursors. It reminds me of PC Music, particularly the track About Funk - its just unapologetically brash and fun(k). Fave Tracks: Dreamin', Music Makes You Lose Control, Take a Little Time, About Funk 4.1/5

Honestly giving this 4 stars for Music Make You Lose Control and Disco II Disco alone. Fun, weird album

Album cover screams Jet Set Radio Future -- what innocent times those were... Definitely have heard Music makes you lose control sampled before. This song stands alone wonderfully. Something about it is so goddamned pure and enjoyable. Love the warmth of the bass tone. Sometimes is giving off some strong LCD Soundsystems vibes with the stanky synth bass plundering throughout. Not my closest listen, but I reallly enjoyed this one. Solid to high 4

Disco II Disco WAHHHHHHHHH I listened to this while running and didn't think it was anything special. Listened to part of it again with proper headphones and I could certainly hear a difference. This album definitely has its moments, but is fairly repetitive with few standouts. Mid-low 3. EDIT: Listened to this with better headphones and it was significantly better than earbuds. Easy 4; I was jamming around the kitchen

What a wildly unique album. At first I thought this was going to be some crazy synth techno stuff that got really old quickly. But each song was very fresh with different styles and sounds. This album sounded like it was made 5 years ago rather than almost 30. Wish I paid attention more to the song titles cause there were a few songs on here that I wanted to save, guess i'll just have to relisten. This is a pretty high 4.

Really loving the background instrumentation on Music Make You Lose Control. Mdc Vendredi sounds like a dope racecar driver. The song is also a banger and reminds me some of the heavy bass I saw at L'imperatrice. This went wildly into a different direction that I initially thought, and was bouncing around a bunch to random songs. Kinda a mixture between Daft Punk and Air. Just groovy and at times dark.

This is totally obnoxious but in the best way. It's dumb fun. I didn't think I would like this much as I did, but I'm a 90s kid who started consuming media in the early 2000s, so maybe it's in my nature to like stuff like this. I didn't think I knew anything about the artist but then I discovered that it's actually Stuart Price, who has made some absolute bangers, including the The Killers' third album (which I think is underrated) and Dua Lipa's "Levitating", one of my favourite songs ever.

OOOO this is fun!!!

Weird album. Never heard of it. Turns out the man is a multiple Grammy winner, but not for this record. I like it. Some of it is retro 80s synth disco, some of it is more modern with glitches and d'nb wobbles and stuff. The variation keeps it fresh until the end. Favorite song: soft machine.

Really grew on me, looked into him further and he’s the guy behind Thin White Duke and Jacques Le Cont remixes that I love.

8.5/10. I like this album's vibe. It's a nice album to dance to. It's not The Prodigy, but it's dope! :)

groovy

As one half of UK born French electronic DJ duo Houmous & Chutney, I know catchy electro beats when I hear them. 4.3

I enjoyed this one. It got a little repetitive, but I guess that's the nature of the genre. Cool to know how many other artists samples these guys.

Thought this was superb. Pity it’s not on vinyl.

Very enjoyable. I know a good few of these songs from being out and about back in the day. Always assumed they were Daft Punk tracks

This is like a dance music nerd showing his collection of synthpop/funk/disco/electroclash trading cards.

Surprisingly catchy, with some great, albeit basic 90s beats that almost seem to be a love letter to late 80s pop, judging from the features. Now, I'm not the buggest fan of that era of pop, and so some of this album can be a bit goofy and certainly long winded, but it carries enough gusto to stand out far more than I thought it would. The bass playing in some of the tracks is great, and those comic book evil like synths in the final track really won me over. It's all 80s cheese, but with a 90s coat of paint to really give it a simple but pleasant vibrance.

That was an enjoyable, peppy, dance-able disc. I must have a thing for turn-of-the-century electronica. It reminds me that Propellerheads haven’t been on this list yet - but it also reminds me of them and that can’t be all bad. Bonus star for the Skee-Lo sample. That song is a treasure.

cheeky but kinda fun

Pop con sintetizadores y post-disco. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

A lot of this was missing from Spotify. With most albums, I seek those songs out. In this case, I get the drift enough to just rate with the 50% or so that I could easily access. Pretty upbeat early techno/house vibes. Fun.

Kind of interesting. I may or may not listen again

I've never loved electronic music, but I think it's because I haven't had a lot of exposure. This album was good exposure. Just fun to listen to.

Good electro

Cool beats, though the voice samples can get repetitive and repetitive and repetitive. It's always fun to hear a song you thought long lost.

Good god, I was not expecting Darkdancer to be this good considering it's not great reputation on the site (only has 2.6 average as of writing this) but this album was surprisingly really solid. The songs, while repetitive, made use of their repetition really well and just were funky, interesting, and really, really catchy. The guest vocalists were great too as were all the main vocalists but the main star of the show is obviously the beats. Few of the songs were annoying with a majority of them being a catchy, fun time. This is easily a great electronic album which shows just how good the 90s can do with electronica Best Song: Hypnotise Worst Song: Disco II Disco

Not amazing but get why it’s on the list

PROPER BONKERS or LE BONKÉR APPROPRIATÉ

Sometimes I'm curious if we're listening to the same record, people-of-the-generator. So many people complaining about this record, but if you think this is bad, wait til you get some of the other ones on this list. It might be shadowed coming off of Soul II Soul's "Club Classics", but this record is a breath of fresh air: some dirty bass, interesting rhythm choices, and do I hear some non-4/4 time signatures? My word. I appear to be alone in this, but I do indeed think this record fucks pretty hard. Also, shoutout to that album cover, an image I don't even think someone trying their hardest to capture the feeling of the late nineties could even dream up. Favorite tracks: "Soft Machine", "Jacques Your Body Makes Me Sweat", "Sometimes"

Was distracted but it sounded pretty cool

Up until "Damaged People", this can best be described as an immaculately produced collection of really jolly good electronic dance music. Some of the well-known stuff is truly superb. I enjoyed it right up until the last track.

It's hard not to move along with these addictive disco tracks.

Catchy dance tunes! I like this genre, I liked this album. I liked Sometimes the most. I felt some of the covers / sampled songs didn't stand on their own very well (see What'S That Sound).

Some sound design from the beginning and end a little tinny, but some songs were recognizable and fun, a smooth 90s esc house album

Some great grooves and catchy tunes.

Fun album that makes ya wanna shake your booty

Is it good? Yes, it's very good. Is it any more essential than other Electro-Pop/Big Beat music of the time (i.e. Chemical Brothers, Justice, Crystal Method, Fat Boy Slim, Daft Punk, etc.)? No, It is not. I'll just throw a dart here and give it...I dunno...three and two-thirds stars.

Frisky and fun!!!

The first cd is great. Not sure the extended edition was needed though, the remixed versions don't really add anything and sound more monotonous.

Touches of Daft Punk and Troy soundtrack. Chill but interesting.

Hard to rate a dance album unless you’re dancing or working out to it. Some of the beats are great on this one, yeah they’re repetitive but that’s dance music. The funk track is my favorite

I liked this album a lot!! Stand out tracks for me were "Soft machine" "Hey you (what’s that sound)" and "About funk"

Almost like a guilty pleasure. Yes, I enjoyed this for exactly what it was.

Music Makes You Lose Control tuttu sample ja kappaleen bassolinja aivan mahtava. Muutenkin paljon tuttuja sampleja. Ranskalaista housea eli vähän samaa maata kuin Daft Punk. Hyvää elektronista rentoa housea. Parhaat: Music Makes You Lose Control, (Hey You) What's That Sound?

Pretty good

This actually rocks. I can't believe it's one of the lowest rated albums on the entire list. Up there with The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. Also catching some Daft Punk and Air vibes. Honestly a really good summary of the late 90s European electronica scene. My belief is that if this had a normal album cover and not something that looks like an advertisement for the PS1 Pepsiman game, the score would be about 0.5 points higher.

California gurls

Nice surprise, that one!

Four stars seems like a lot, but three is definitely not enough. Mark this one as a 3.9 for me.

It's not like there were a huge amount of album-length statements about this kind of Eurotrashy, late 90s dance music that I happen to really like so I'll take it. I wrote about it more elsewhere but I think this is way more noteworthy as an introduction to Stuart Price's excellent pop production work, probably best exemplified by Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor.

Disco II Disco is either the best or most annoying song I've ever heard and I think it's closer to the former

Oooh the opening two tracks — “Dreamin’” and “Music Makes You Lose Control” — are awesome. Really infectious fun! I love how it unpretentious this album is. Lots of cheesy 80s pop influence and great dance beats. Some of it gets a little goofy too and I mean that as a good thing. I would love to be on a dance floor and laugh at some zany synth effect or crazy vocal sample. It’s all part of the fun. With only a few exceptions, this album is a dance party waiting to happen.

Wow I love this album cover, it somehow makes me feel nostalgic for this art style but also interestingly I don't know if this is specifically a style that is reminiscent of the 1990's. This came out in 99, so maybe I'm nostalgic for both the late 90s and early 2000's. I'm trying to decipher really what's going on in the image though, it looks like in the lower right there's some kind of music gear (like the knob with notches and greenish background on the right) that is split by him. Is he painting that cityscape behind him and cracking a fresh spray paint? Is it a soda? It kind of looks like a Pepsi right? The music is cool. The tones are in that fun space of not being dated but also specifically pulling for a nostalgic sound. It's kind of daft-punky to me at times. I love these funny lines like "music makes you lose control". I feel like this was something that was done in the 80's, like telling people to move on the dance floor. To me it's very dated but I think it's a constant lyrical theme that will be in music forever. It's definitely not popular at the moment though because it's not cool and it's not deep but I'd love to hear some indie rocker sad boy album where all the songs are about society and capitalism and then right in the middle of the album you hear something like "music makes you lose control". Despite the low play counts, I enjoyed this album!

The album cover is the dude from LazyTown, yes? This is pretty banging actually. Never heard of the band but this is the sort of thing I’m here for: stuff I absolutely wouldn’t usually listen to. Lovely. More of the different please.

10/10 would dance to again

This was a bop from top to bottom!

Hadn't heard of this one, but recognized a couple of songs on it when they came on. Surprised by how much I enjoyed this - about two thirds of the songs got me moving in my seat a bit, only a couple of duds. It seems to have been pretty influential as well, as the guy went on to produce for some big names. 7/10

Not bad at all.

First listen, I wasn't impressed.... after a while I really started liking it. Standouts: (Hey, You) What's That Sound?, Music Makes You Lose Control, Dreamin', From Disco to Disco, Sometimes, Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat). 4/5

I liked this. Good energy and rhythms. A little repetitive but appropriate for synth-pop.

Looks interesting - an electronic album from 1999. Like it’s vibe right away, any electronic album is a positive to me haha. Music makes you lose control is one I recognised. Generally enjoying this one and will add it to my library. 4.

Catchy as hell, I've bookmarked some songs from this

Brader

Goofy but good songs

This just tickled something inside my brain

I don't think i knew the original version of Music makes you lose control, it's really cool, loved the bass in it 🥰🥰🥰🎶🎶🎶🥰🥰🥰🎶🎶🎶🥰🥰🥰🎶🎶🎶🥰🥰🥰🎶🎶🎶🥰🥰🥰🎶🎶🎶🥰🥰🥰🎶🎶🎶🥰🥰🥰 listened to this album multiple times

too long but fun

Some nice funky beats. Gets a little repetitive at times. Occasionally annoying (Disco Disco). But mostly kept me tapping my toes the whole time.

Fun in that Depeine mode let of way

Less disco more trip in this super sweet French album

What the hell? I really liked this. 4/5

Very good, even if it is not my usual cup of tea. Perfect to work to

Geen enkele gitaar? French House? WTF??? Wat een heerlijke afwisseling is dit! Music makes you lose control is dus oorspronkelijk van hun/hem? Heel dik. Repititief noemen? FAVO: Music makes you lose control, Hey you(What's that sound), Take a little time, From: Disco to: Disco, Brothers, Sometimes

Favorieten: Hypnotise, Jacques You Body (Make Me Sweat), Damaged People

ye this is cool. Neat synths, dancy vibes. Good for working fs

Started good, but was hard to get into the rhythm of Soft Machine. Continued good again, but From: Disco To: Disco is really hard to get through. I get he was trying to push the boundaries of music, but I thought those vocals were unpleasant to the ear. The rest was good. I didn't even mind the drill sounds.

This is a cool dance album. Jacques Your Body Makes Me Sweat is a banger.

Really good. Excellent cover, really well made dance music.

A fun little jaunt through important electronic music.

Interesting. I was a bit involved in the rave scene in the SF Bay area in the 1992 to 1994 timeframe and this wouldn't be out of place in that situation. Reasonably good beats, some good ideas. I'm giving it a four as I do think it's above average... on a ten point scale it would be a seven, not an eight, though...

I saw another UK electronic album and I was anticipating another slog. However this one incorporates a wide range of influences that gave the album a deep groove. I found myself enjoying it the entire way through even if it was a bit too long.

Pretty good EDM album, enjoyed the listen and the remixes of tracks.

8/10 agréablement surpris. a revenir

Extremely good running album

Pop con sintetizadores y post-disco. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Wow, never heard of this album or the creator and it's pretty tight. Some great songs and the sound is pretty ahead of it's time for the 90s still sounds modern today.

I don’t know that these were particularly special dance tracks, but the album was fun enough…except that one track that I couldn’t make it through.

Fun to have a straight-up dance album. Not sure why this one but I enjoyed it.

overall fun dance album with some different, interesting electronic songs at the end. fun to run to

Great mix of 80's electro and house, sounds retro but also modern and current. It's got that European style of dance

Fun funky housey big beat. will for sure be listening again.

Wasn’t looking forward to this as I really don’t like “electronica” - but this was pretty good. I’m still not a fan of the genre, but this was less repetitive and annoying than almost all the rest of it. And, given the time frame it came out in and the list of artist I see he’s worked with, it’s clear that this was influential in the industry. It’s a 3 for me, but I’ll give it a bump to check my own bias and give it the credit it probably deserves.

Slightly surprised to see this come up. Jacques du Cont was doing the whole 80s throwback thing before Calvin Harris made it cool. That said, quite a few tracks on "Darkdancer" seem to be crowd-pleasing late-90s house that don't quite live up to the perfectly executed pastiche of "Hey You" and "Sometimes."

Good to see some Electronic coming up in the list every now and then. This was a really decent album with one or two songs I've previously heard (Namely the club mix of "Jacques Your Body"). Some of these tracks are bangers, others fall a bit flat to me. Overall though I really liked this. Favourite: Soft Machine

I like this album. Not every song goes super hard, but there are a bunch that are a real bop. The songs are great for getting you in a groove, and I was jamming along to the songs. Definitely the best electronica album I've listened to so far. Favorite song: music makes you lose control Worst song: Disco II disco

Not bad, as someone with extremely eclectic taste I deffo enjoyed this Saved tracks: Dreamin', Soft Machine, Hypnotise, From: Disco To: Disco, Sometimes, Music Makes You Lose Control - Lrd Remix

8/10 there were some pretty good moments here but nothing amazing feels like france had a surplus of electronic artists in the 80s lol while a lot of them were actually super talented, (mainly Daft Punk, who were geniuses at sampling/production) a lot of them are just kinda… fun, and not much else I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s fun but that’s all this album has it doesn’t sound very creative, like it’s reinventing anything still pretty cool

After seeing the cover I was expecting a radical being from an alternate future to come and take me on a most triumphant voyage through hyperspace. While it didn't quite reach those dizzying highs, I did have a really good head bop and foot tap while he played an array of synthesizers at me. I spent some time in his company. We nodded knowingly at each other during particularly rad beats. We drank way too much sonic-Pepsi. We had fun together.

I like this one. Very energetic '90s techno/dance stuff, with a variety of influence. Some tracks even veer into hip hop sounding drums. The "music makes you lose control" sample is cool, not sure if that originated here, but it was obviously used again later. And the Buffalo Springfield sample was pretty surprising. Quite a few hits on here for me, I can definitely dig it. Always nice to take a break from the standard rock fare. Favorite tracks: Music Makes You Lose Control, Soft Machine, About Funk, Hypnotise, Jacques Your Body. Album art: Kind of a weird one, almost looks like those new AI generators made this. It's cool hip dude cracking open a Pepsi or something. '90s in all the right ways. 4/5

liked this more than i expected to, really hyped me up!

Nice and good...

Wow! Mijn favorieten zijn "Hypnotise", "Take a Little Time" en de topper "Sometimes". ****

This Daft Punk lite album is a rare cheese ball that is the reason people like practical effects and bad B movies. This is a B movie electronic album, a horrible, messy, bloopy, farty bass masterpiece. This album is fun. Heck, it’s a blast. Easily a reason to dive into the medium to easy listening electro field. Give me more ass shaking bleep bloop please.

Bangin

Never heard of him / them, so didn’t know what to expect. It’s decent. From Reading but born in Paris making French electro pop, that’s interesting and the music is interesting, unique. Sometimes it verges on EuroTrash but never quite goes there. Broken beats & groovy synth lines, no wonder he became a big producer. One to listen to socially when drinking, it’s upbeat party music but not too manic. Sounds very 80s but with modern technology. Techno and funk and lots of fun in here, every track is different so many ideas it holds the attention and doesn’t sound samey. Manages to be both cool and heaps of fun this, no mean feat. A great discovery after a few tough listens in this project.

A solid dose of dance music 8/10

Good electro-pop. Can get a bit repetitive.

Really reminds me of being 18 and monkeyed. Absolute nostalgia

Feels like a lifetime since I listened to this. Great album that blended French disco with 80s synth pop. I forgot how much I loved this. I have vague memories of seeing him DJ but I may have hallucinationed it. Fun times

Electro pop goodness, what's not to like? Would have perhaps been super into it when came out, if I had been aware of it. That said, wouldn't say it's stand out above other electro of the era like Daft Punk or Timo Maas

Funky remixed beats

Nothing special, but a pretty fun electronic album.

Holy shit, this is really good. "Music makes you lose control", that bass hook is rad! Never heard of this before, but I kind of love it, makes you want to shake your ass.

Liked this quite a lot. The thing stopping this from being a 5/5 is just that the vocals are over-repeated without enough other variation to keep it from being grating. Some songs are better than others in this regard. It doesn't bother me much over a single listen, but I know it'd stop me from playing the album on repeat, and thus 4/5 instead of 5/5

Yeah this is some groovy af dance music. Impossible to sit still to. Bass riff in "Music Makes You Lose Control" is amazing (and ah that's where that Missy Elliott sample is from!).

7/10. Kinda fun, not really my thing

Fantastic album and very excited/surprised to see it on this list. I thought I was so cool listening to this in high school, and it still holds up well over 20 years later. 4.5/5

cool album. lot of samples must have come from here. heard a lot of familiar things.

I really dig this album!

Really nice album for playing in the background while other stuff is going on (like attempting to work). Full of electronic synth stuff, but not so overpowering that you HAVE to pay attention to it. I'm tempted to give it 4 stars, given how scarce my actually enjoying the selections has been lately. Relatively speaking, I like it better than yesterday's 3-star offering, so 4 it is!

Really liked it despite limited experience with electronic stuff. Also cool to hear the missy/Ciara sample

Perfect timing for my 200th!

A fun, throwback French house jam. A few tracks felt too repetitive for my taste, but I enjoyed the album for the most part.

This is like an 80's-90's masterclass. It's just great and I can see why a lot of artists that want to get that vibe for their songs are still turning to Price. The cover art is plainly hideous though, but I guess that's just the 00's kickin in. Liked: About Funk

Yesss so many samples

Dancer only

Had this in college, but not listened to it in god knows how long. Still love it, dance in your seat stuff. Great beats, disco sound, remembered most of the tunes. Deffo has a 90s/00s kinda sound, a little bit of big-beat. Sampled widely in other stuff too (2manyDjs). Hadn't realised it was a British bloke riding the coattails of french house. Need more dance music in this list, but I guess the album is not as common a format in electronic music.

a few great songs on here. flight facilities have used a lot of it in there mixes

Hell yeah. Certified back to back bangers from What's that Sound onward. What a synth lord. Big Sneaky Sound System and Early Calvin Harris styles. From:Disco To:Disco and Take a Little Time are highlights. Five stars if it started and finished stronger

interesting dance album. Sounds almost 80' in places. Will need another listen i think

Like other electronic albums, I have a difficulty putting this one into context. However, every track is good pop music, if perhaps a little generic (though they may not have been for the time). It seems like sort of a weird choice for this list because I don't see it as being a groundbreaking album, but it's also hard to argue with because it's well-produced 4/5

4.5 stars. This is close, but the last two songs aren't my favorite. Very nu-disco, synth pop, Daft Punk style electronica. Super danceable. THIS THING IS STRAIGHT BANGERZ. I just wanna dance. Almost every song has at least one part I just love. Last two songs tail off maybe a little but I liked this a lot

wanna buy some deathsticks?

Oh boy I can already tell this one is gonna be polarizing. On the one hand, it's hypnotic, well produced, and features solid guest vocal performances. On the other hand, one could argue it could use more bass, and veers a bit too far into repetitiveness. While I do like it - it's quite groovy at times - I'm stuck in the middle, as I can't help but feel like there are other (better) late 90s/early 00's house artists to include on this list.

Legal

Some very catchy tunes, but the production is a bit too much of its time for me

Eh, it's fine. Some of the songs later in the album show off an impressive voice. Wouldn't put it on a list of must-hear albums.

synthie, synthie, synthie.
