Reviews (page 4 of 7)

If someone were to party like it is 1999, this album is likely going to make an appearance on that track list. This is dance music you can listen to, not just move to. There is an obvious balance of immediacy with some technical sophistication showing that broad electronica or house music can have some precision and fun, not just one or the other. House music always seemed to be something that a person had to be dancing to in order for any of it to make sense, or at the very least be distracted by as to not notice the repetitive boredom of it. While this album has elements of that, it also gives the listener something to look forward to. As predictable as it is, it sets up the potential for surprise and that is what makes this album a listenable one.

Ooh hello. This was an unexpected blast of clubbiness. Mainly, I really liked it. As in, I liked the synth sound, basslines, chords, rhythms. Most of it's definitely something I'd enjoy dancing to. On a first listen, my favourites were Dreamin', What's That Sound, Take A Little Time and Sometimes. However, Soft Machine and Disco II Disco were really pretty terrible, with Soft Machine being particularly ill-conceived - it sounded like some cheesy hair-metal outfit from 1988 had suddenly decided to go electro. And the only trouble with repetitive electro dance stuff like this is that, if you don't enjoy a particular phrase, you're usually stuck in at least 16 bars of it before anything changes or happens. I did have some of those moments. But overall, I'm glad to have heard this and will listen again - I'll just be skipping tracks 3 and 7.

Some corkers, but overall enjoyed less now than I did back then

An excellent electronic album! Some great tunes on this for sure! It isn’t groundbreaking stuff by any stretch of the imagination, but it was bloody good to listen to!

slighty cheesy, this feels like the soundtrack to a succession of energy drink ads and where is the Fatboy Slim remix. Not unfun in anyway, but neither has it lasted as well as Justice or Digitalism in the post-Daft Funk french dance world.

It's fine. I enjoyed it.

This felt just "okay". Definitely have to be in a dance music, techno kinda vibe. Probably won't listen again.

Listened Before? N Not as bad as I expected when I read about it. Some good retro EDM stuff here, but also some songs that are grating. I probably wouldn't come back to this one but didn't mind my time with it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Hey you what's that sound?

Just not for me. Nothing to say of it being bad.

Pretty good dance music! Probably won't listen to it again but I did not hate it.

Favorite Track: Mdc vendredi

Yeah it's good, the origin samples of some classics. Disc 2 better than Disc 1. Rotational

a couple of catchy tracks, maybe it’s groundbreaking in a way that’s invisible to me?

Canne too late , after the first daft punk

Dance. Un poco largo.

Almost the platonic ideal of a 3 star album to me, although I was really feeling it yesterday for whatever reason. Ended up vibing and running a radio station off of it after which is rare. I don't know what that means to me but it was more enjoyable than most 3 stars. 3+.

it's a definite mixed bag for me but the highs are really good

Sure. Why not.

Pretty sure I’ve heard Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat) before. Decent high energy beats to work out to.

good overall, some songs weren’t mixed very well and some songs ended up dragging

Jaques your body is a classic and there is some good stuff on the album, but they do repeat the same cords over an over so not as good daft punk but clearly a good album.

This was an interesting album. Definitely not a type of music that I normally listen to or seek out. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the album as the rhythms were very enjoyable. With that said, it was very repetitive at times and not every song did it for me. Overall I enjoyed the album and thought it was excellent work music. Disco II Disco was somehow good and bad at the same time, which I think sums up the album as a whole.

I was skeptical when I saw this album was described as synth-pop but it was actually quite listenable.

Blind album and artist. Repetitive techno that was okay and catchy but not notable or interesting to me.

A dance album with some '80s inspired sounds. One song sounded a little like Sweet Dreams. Disco II Disco was one that was very annoying with the voice effect and especially that waaaaaaaah sound that was repeated ad nauseum. Otherwise, it seemed like a fine soundtrack to a dance party, not so much a soundtrack for my morning commute, but I can't fault it for that. The songs themselves were repetitive as you'd expect, but they were fairly unique from each other. I do wonder what makes it special enough to be on this 1,001 albums list. Favorite track: Soft Machine

It's not offensive, but I was pretty happy to hear to end of it. A lot of the songs are just a bit too simple, and none of the featured vocalists are really that good either. A banger here and there but not an album i'm ever going to go back to.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would when it started. It was a bit repetitive but had some cool beats and was good fun. I guess some of the features of the album has been so overused in this kind of music over the years it's harder to appreciate the early stuff but it was cool.

I have absolutely no idea what this album is. It’s probably a 2 if I’m honest - but it really made me want to dance.

Apparently when this came out critics called it ahead of its time. I’m not sure I agree. I think the first few songs are very of their time — Eiffel 65’s “Blue” was everywhere, and there were a ton of dance-influenced groups in the US around this time that had a similar sound even though they weren’t techno/house — Blaque, 3LW, Youngstown, O-Town, etc. You also had S Club 7 in the UK. If Darkdancer beat them by a few months, it was just the luck of timing their release. And of course, Daft Punk was already very much in the game. I guess it beat songs like “Call On Me” and groups like Cascada by a few years, but I’m not sure that really makes them innovative. Then you have songs like “Take A Little Time” which sounds like a throwback to the early—mid 90s dance craze (LaBouche, etc.). A lot of this album sounds like it was created by slapping together a bunch of loops in Garageband. It’s fun for about 30 seconds and then it gets annoying, but it still drags on for another 3 minutes. The more techno songs like “Disco II Disco” are just irritating. The worst parts of Daft Punk electronica. But there are a couple enjoyable songs. Track 2, “Music Makes You Lose Control” is surprisingly fun, and the opening track “Dreamin’” and “Take a Little Time” are both good. Overall, I’m not hearing anything worthy of being a “must listen.” While there are some catchy riffs and pieces, it’s mostly just more annoying electronica. An artist like Mika or Gotye is much more deserving of a spot on this list. I’ll give it a 3, but it’s really a 2.5. It’s not as unlistenable as some of the other electronica albums on this list, but I’m not going to listen to it again.

Well now we know where Missy Elliot got the “lose control” sample from! This was pretty fun to be honest. Reminds me of Daft Punk from this period. I wonder if they were pals? High 3.

Not exactly high art, but not offensive.

Some of these I like but the longer ones definitely get repetitive. Some are definitely a little grating.

Again, not my immediate taste, but this one had more positivity in it than the SAULT album.

Good stuff. But how important??

French

It's albums like this that make me really love this whole project, because I 100% would have never heard about this otherwise. Not my usual thing at all but I definitely dig it

Fun, but a bit forgetable. music makes you lose control.

I liked this more than I thought I would.

I like beats. I didn’t really like the beats with singing. Songs were a bit long and repetitive. Don’t know if this really deserves to be on here as it didn’t do anything to stand out. Another album that came and went and I will have forgotten about it by tomorrow. 5/10

I don’t know who this is or how it made the list. Ohhh it’s Jacques Lu Cont, of remixing indie tracks fame. That answers the ‘who’. How it made the list, I still don’t know. It’s trashy and throwaway and occasionally annoying. BUT it’s also good fun a lot of the time, and pretty catchy. Apparently this came out a fortnight after the Basement Jaxx album that cropped up the other day, and they feel kinda similar. That one probably had more cultural impact, but this one maintained my interest more across its runtime. They’re both getting 2.5 stars from me, but I’m inclined to round this one up to a 3.

Liking the bass lines.

Like a 90s gaybar. Some good tracks on it though

Fun vibes, some good beats - not my favorite kind of music but I still liked it.

It started very promising but it got weaker over the time. It still had sone great tunes to dance to!

This is more like it ! I enjoyed this but maybe because it helped keep me going with what I was doing ! 3*

Quite enjoyable and not as terrible as these reviews make out

The album sounds bleak in light of what French electronica was a the time and, the highs it would reach subsequently. Having said that, it closes quite strong and that Sometimes track is a stone cold classic.

I remember when this album came out I was fully hyped up and I wasn't the only one. Les Rythmes Digitales would have an event at Ekko Utrecht, but was cancelled (missed a Theo Maassen show for it, I already had a ticket). Revisiting the album after all those years, I can't say I missed that much. Darkdancer is full of electronic music that was "ahead of its time" then, but now sounds a bit dated.

HOLY SHIT THAT'S THE FUNNY DANCING TRIANGLE SONG

Mostly just fine. "Sometimes" is a catchy track. But overall a bit generic.

Not my genre of choice, but enjoyable for the most part.

Lots of annoying samples were chosen for this project. Music Makes you Lose Control and Hey You What's that Sound are particularly repetitive. There are some spots that I vibe with though.

This was a good album. I hadn't heard of this before, but I did enjoy listening to it.

MUSIC MAKE YOU LOSE CONTROL

I bet if you surveyed everybody who’s at least 300-400 albums deep, and you asked them if there's a genre they feel they themselves could have done a better job picking albums from, I bet 90%+ would say yes. Mine would be dance. WTF. I love dance music but you’d never know it from the way I rate the questionable dance choices from this list.

I really liked it, but I didn't think it was a real standout from other dance music.

Dance.

This is pretty decent electro pop. A lot of the sounds didn’t age well. Some of the beats are a lot of fun though. I can imagine getting hyped when some of these tracks come on in the club. Some of the best tracks aren’t on spotify so it may be worth digging them up on youtube.

Great sounds. Reminds of Chicago house music. To the person who wrote about their friend Keith (rest in peace), thank you for sharing. Shit was beautiful.

It is alright. A little repetitive for my liking but not bad.

I don't listen to this type of music, but based off of the reviews I thought that this would be unlistenable to me. Turns out this album is a fun little EDM/dance album. There are a couple stinkers, but overall this was a fine album.

90s club music. Not something i would listen to randomly but good beats and catchy hooks and lyrics. 3.5

Decent early EDM.

Some good tracks on ‘Darkdancer’ such as, ‘(Hey You) What’s That Sound’ (check out the music-video for a good time), ‘Music Makes You Lose Control’, and ‘Take A Little Time’ amongst others. Also nice of Shannon and Nick Kershaw to swing by from the 80s and lend their vocals to the project. Speaking of which, I’m a fan of the whole 80s homage and aesthetic that’s happening here. I’m not so much a fan of the faux French thing though. It drags the album down and dates/ages it more than I hoped it would. Still, it’s a mostly fun time overall.

Frustrating how many times (in the first 50 albums alone!) I feel like the editor was trapped in his own bubble, foisting UK artists up as more impactful or significant than they really were. Opener "Dreamin'" feels woefully behind its time; before the vocals start, it sounds like a Sonic The Hedgehog soundtrack entry unearthed nearly a decade after the game was released. Thankfully it gets brighter from there - easy to see a line ahead to Justice's emergence in 2006-07 on "Soft Machine," and "Music Makes You Lose Control" got to Hot Streak's source six years ahead of Missy Elliot. I think the vocal performances and samples are so earnest they feel dated, as if they could sit alongside La Bouche or Corona, but thinking back, I remember thinking the same about Romanthony's turns on Daft Punk's Discovery. Still, hearing a vocal positively dripping with vibrato warbling "the fullness of a great love are bells and wedding rings," fully three years after the Spice Girls dropped "Wannabe," makes "Take A Little Time" sound about as fresh as hair metal after Nevermind dropped. You can hear Fatboy Slim in the air as "Brothers" was put together. Overall it feels really uneven, less "omnivorous" than just herking and jerking between disparate influences that are not well blended.

Epitome of a 3

Good beats, excellent production. The band seems to have a strong attitude but also a humor which I like. Soft Machine and Damaged People are standouts. And Nik Kershaw!

3 everyone was hating on this but it was alright. Yes the lyrics were repetitive but at least there was variation in the music

I have been on a run of albums I really have not rated (two-plus weeks of albums averaging low 2 stars, with only a couple of 3s in there). When this popped up I thought "oh for fuck's sake, more shit!" I've never been an EDM / house / techno fan, to the point that I don't even know if this is one of those genres, but it's what I imagine they are. And in a shocking twist, I actually quite enjoyed it! Yes, it's repetitive, and I don't really think it belongs on the list, but the hooks are pretty good, and the sound quality and production is crisp as anything. I genuinely may revisit this, and I really did not expect that this morning.

A lot of good songs on it. But there were a couple I had to skip.

Wouldn’t seek it out but don’t hate it. Some of it’s kinda fun and other songs were way just boring

I read the summary of the artist on Spotify and got nervous when it said the lead singer was inspired by Kraftwerk. Ended up liking it more than expected, found myself dancing/bopping along while listening. Still not my favorite but 2.5 rounded up to 3.

I haven’t heard of Les Rhythmes Digitales before. At a glance, this album cover looks like a Pepsi advert. I think he’s cracking open a can, and even his hair and clothing are the Pepsi colours. Bit odd. I’m really not sure what to expect from this. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: (Hey You) What’s That Sound, Brothers Thankfully, the music isn’t about Pepsi as far as I can tell. This is pretty fun electronica, and it definitely feels very 90’s. The music isn’t exactly deep, but it’s catchy enough to keep my attention. I’m truly bewildered how this album is considered an essential listen though. It’s not bad by any means, but it really doesn’t feel amazing. Perhaps a lot of later electronica wouldn’t have existed if this didn’t lay some groundwork? I really don’t know.

Expected better from this one honestly, kinda stale and aged poorly. A couple of tracks are ok, most of them don’t really stick. The Wish.com of Daft Punk

2-3 Has some good bangers, but alot of crap.

Not too bad, but it makes me nervous

Interesting.

‘From: Disco To: Disco’ werkt op mijn zenuwen maar verder verrassend leuk album!

Good album, but not really for me.

It was pretty good for a dance album.

Groovy dance music from top to bottom. A British guy, not a French guy. Works under many nom de plumes including the Thin White Duke (not David Bowie)

Pretty fun

At first I did not know who this guy was or why he was here, but the second song answered all my questions. I am not a total fan of the album, but there are several songs in it that are a total vibe. Expected Marc rating: 3

Not really my thing. But not unpleasant. Nice that Nik Kershaw is involved.

I didn't know this album existed but somehow recognize every song.

Fine, but not my thing.

First thought was, did Brandon Fraser ever make music? 🤔 These are quite nice jams, reminds me of a more chill Chemical Brothers a bit. But it’s too much of the same going on. 6 out of 10

No estaban muchos tracks en Spotify. Lo que escuche me gustaron. 3

Enjoyed it somewhat. Reminded me of 90s N64 games.

I enjoyed this actually - like someone else mentioned, it's very 90's daft punk-esque. For those complaining about repetition, it was very common in electronica music.

was aight

ahead of its time. Sounds dated but still fresh/unique. 3.7

Electro-clash before there was electro-clash. As a result, it sounds both ahead of its time and outdated at once. The best moments would fit in nicely on a Daft Punk playlist, but there's a lot of filler too.

Overall pretty dissapointing, but one or two good tracks. If you like those go and listen to the soundtrack to the Playstation 1 game Speed Freaks.

nem fogok végig hallgatni 20 számot

1999. Sounded more like late 80s early 90s, self published material. The first couple tracks just sounded like somebody got a new iMac and garage band and wanted to throw a bunch of stuff in it. But then I started to really enjoy HYPNOTISE and it got better after that. Probably wouldn’t buy the CD but because it kept my attention, it gets a 3

i'm not mad i listened to les rythmes digitales' darkdancer! truly, this album was pleasant and fun. many songs had a good beat and were different from one another to keep a listener interested. my personal music tastes found some sounds were too repetitive in a single song, but i can still appreciate the creativity even if it wasn't for me. the usage of electronic, synth, disco to create dance music was a big part of why this album came across as different from other half-instrumental electronic albums. i was reminded of kraftwerk at times--"sometimes" had that heavy electronic sound that i associate with kraftwerk!

Chillin

Not bad. A little "too cool for school" with some of the gimmicks.

It was tolerable. I recognized some of the songs that were sampled. I have no desire to revisit the album. Not really a 2 but it is not a 3. I will round up.

Could be good workout/running music.

"Darkdancer" is the second studio album by Les Rhythmes Digitales who is English electronic musician, DJ, songwriter and record producer Jacques Lu Cont (aka Stuart Price). Synth-pop and post-disco are the named genres. I always like coming across genres for the first time and post-disco would be one of those. One critic commented the music as ahead of its time and launching much of the electro-pop of the 2000's. Commercially, the album hit #53 in the UK. "Drramin'" opens things up with a synth-driven melody and a disco dance beat. A guy singing "don't just sit there dreamin'...dance, dance, dance." This is very early 80's sounding. The second single "Music Makes You Lose Control" adds an interesting synth-guitar melody and a more prominent bass. Horn sounds are thrown in. The beat sampes "Body Work" by Hot Wax. The third album single "(Hey You) What's That Sound?" amps the funk factor up a bit with layered synths. A different guy singing and repeating the title. I'm coming to appreciate the minimalist approach to lyrics on this album. Scratching begins the first single "Jacques Your Body Makes Me Sweat." This song goes all over the place. A repetitive- funky synth and rappin.' The song changes pace to 80's video game-synth music and then back to the funk. "Sometimes" begins with ominous synths and beats. The melody goes more pop and Nik Kershaw shows up. This is definitely the closet to a pop song on the album. And keeping with the time travel theme, we are again in the 80's with the melody and especially with Nik Kershaw singing. The album closes with even more ominous synths in "Damaged People." Thomas Ribero on lead vocals as he repeats that we're all damaged people. The least danceable song on the album. Actually, not danceable at all. Maybe, the most interesting song on the album. I have to be honest; I didn't know what to expect here and wasn't sure I was looking forward to it. But, this album kept my interest for the most part. There are creative uses of the synths and a cast of different lead singers. The beats were varied with elements of dance, disco, industrial, funk, ambient and hip hop. There are a few songs that are very similar to current-day DJ sets I've seen. Yeah, I don't think this will be everyone's cup of tea but if you're into electronic and dance music, you'll like this.

Okay, but a bit simple for my tastes.

There were some parts of this that I really liked, and then there were some weird parts.

It was annoying music, I listened to the whole album, but I don't think I will listen to this again

A fun listen, seems ahead of its time. Can see how it could influence a lot of the electropop of the 2000s. Really enjoyed the About Funk, seemed very Daft Punk-esque. Also liked the vocals on Sometimes. Good stuff.

Pretty rad

dance!

This was fun! And... that's all it really was for me lol.

Decent EDM, but nothing special

It is electronic pop. Daft Punk is both older and better but this is OK.

Not too crazy but there were a fair few tracks that had me bobbing my head

Helt coolt

Based on the album art and the 90s electronica genre, I was fully expecting this to suck shit but it was surprisingly okay. It's not an album to listen to very intently so my attention drifted in and out while I did a crossword. Some points I remember as being very abrasive and obnoxious and other points being pretty funky and cool with the final track being a stand out especially because the vocals were pretty good too. It wasn't great but it did just enough for me to mildly enjoy it.

Funky house music, better than Daft Punk, fewer big beats than Fatboy Slim and not as techno as Chemical Brothers. Good.

That was bold and innovative. You can literally hear it's French. 3.5/5

Like good, but super not for album listening. EDM type stuff

Life got in the way and I wasn't able to listen to this full album. But broadly I enjoyed what I heard. Honestly could feel this influencing a lot of other tracks I've heard that are more recent.

very eurobeat

30th June 2023 Listened in the morning while reading empire on my phone cos I woke up at 6. Was distracted obviously but didn’t think this was bad. French electro with a dash of funk and soul.

Enjoyable DJ/Electro/Trip-Hop Album. Some songs are definitely stronger than others, specifically the songs based around 1-2 vocal chops are catchy beyond belief and surprisingly don’t get stale. Others are a bit more spacey, which isn’t bad, but doesn’t keep the momentum that makes the rest of the album so strong. Definitely will be keeping a handful of songs on repeat, and a good listen regardless.

A fun listen. Not really my thing, but I can definitely hear the dna of early 00's dance music that would follow.

Kansi on ruma. 3/3

Keskimäärin ihan ok nautinnollista, jotkut biisit vähän tylsiä (kuten lopetusraita damaged people). sillee 2.5/5, menköön nyt kolmosena.

I've slagged off Dance music enough on this list (summary: I think it's mostly good for dancing, significantly less so for listening). This had a promising start but the back half featured all the repetition and squelchy synth blatting that puts me off most Dance.

Pretty decent 90s electronica. Funky as hell.

This is 1999? Sounds...older. Not terrible though.

This was a pretty fun electronic album. Not all songs were available but I was dancing along while listening. Some songs needed a bit more variety but I think that's part of the genre. All in all, it was a good album but nothing I would recommend so anyone.

I didn’t LOVE this but I liked parts, especially the sampling of other late 90s radio hits. It’s pretty repetitive (which most electronics albums are) but it wasn’t bad.

Fair few bangers.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Music makes you lose control (2) 2 - Jacques Your Body Makes Me Sweat (10) 3 - Hypnotise (4)

Never heard of this but I really dig it. Definitely reminds me of a lot of the europop/electronic stuff I listen to and I dig it. Very upbeat and dancey and catchy.

Bit average. It's got its highs and it's got its lows.

There are a couple of really good electronic dance numbers here, but I think that it’s pretty accurate that this was named the 97th greatest dance album out of 99.

Decent enough electronica with a few good standouts. Stand out tracks - Soft Machine - Jacques Your Body - (Hey you) What's that sound?

A last nod to the dance sound of the 90s before the dawn of the millennium. The song featuring Nik Kershaw is a real highlight.

This sounds like something that was programmed on an amiga in the early 90s. Reminds me of the old streets of rage soundtrack on the sega. Good for what it is but maybe the influence is lost on me.

Pretty damn good, seriously thought about turning it off during the first track, then it got better. 3 stars.

3/5 But very impressive

Got better as it went on.

Good. Not great. At points fun. At others, repetitive. Would I listen to it again? Some of it. An hour? Not sure.

Pretty fun electric disco pop album. I really feel like this predates a lot of modern pop music.

Found myself liking it (in particular, liked working with it playing). Nice energy.

A fine sounding electro dance album. As usual with albums of this type and of this period, its at least 20 minutes too long and consuming it all the way through in one sitting causes fstigue. half way through I am impatient for the album to come to an end. The last song; Damaged People is a welcome mid tempo change of pace from the non stop hi tempo dance rhythms. So to summarize a good dance album that runs out of mementum in the middle. 3 stars

I don't usually listen to electronic, dance music but I did enjoy the album. But it also solidified my dislike of this expansive genre and thats the repetition of the samples and lyrics used, it doesn't go anywhere and makes me feel like I am going insane. Overall 6/10

Not great but not bad either. Cool techno sounds but still a little boring.

ah, the english guy pretending to be french because everyone wants french house in the late 90s. he has all the pseudonyms. jacques lu cont, zoot woman, thin white duke, paper faces or stuart price. this whole thing was probably a bit of a precursor to the radio soulwax 2 many djs mash up thing that was enormous in the early 2000s. as with anything that was an early "innovator" in a scene when you look back it just sounds like a shit version of the good stuff done by the people who took it and improved it.

Nobody ever died from getting fingered too hard, but I came pretty close listening to this.

Not a huge techno fan.

I was expecting to hate this album. I didn't love it but I didn't despise it. Alot of the songs are more what we would describe as loops, or backing tracks today. I don't think thats surprising in context, the chap behind this album went on to be a very sucsessful pop producer in the 2000's so I think there is value here in hearing a early version of some of the sounds that would go on to back some huge pop hits. I did find myself smiling at a few of the tracks, which was unexpected. I think its got some personality. Unfortunately its buried in this wall of grating repetitive electronica. I'm gonna bump it up to a 3 though because it did surprise me in places.

This is fairly generic Discothèque music, but it does credit to show just how influential the French have been with this genre. While it isn't the biggest task to find more influential artists, the samples and subtle impact this album has given to music is pretty astounding.

Some bops but overall a bit repetetive and not creative at all

miellekästä musiikkia. hyvää teknologista pumputusta, biisien hunaja ei kuitenkaan tarpeeksi makiaa että voi jankuttaa täysin samaa lyhyttä yksinkertaiastettua pätkää neljä minuuttia putkeen... taustamusiikkia...ei kuuntelumusiikkia. tähän musiikkiin voi hyvin kuvitella videopelin npc tanssi animaation hmm...terävät perkussionit ja hyvänlaatuista 90 luvun loppu puolen elektron funk saundia.... kelpo albumi, hyvä mieli tulloo... music makes you lose control

Not my thing normally but I liked it

I enjoyed this more than I should've

I liked it but not quite enough to give 4 stars

It's weird but i'm liking it. it lagged a bit in the middle.

It was aight

It's a long one. Pretty decent and true to the description.

Seems like a ray parker jr.-ghostbusters era synthesizer focused album. There's a few standouts, Dreamin' Hypnotise and Take a Little Time, though too many of the tracks don't really have a drive that holds my attention. Also Music Makes You Lose Control is very difficult to listen to. Ugh.

Fun synth pop album

Take daft punks music and imagine a guy with frosted tips and a shark necklace making it and that's what this album sounds like

weird but i liked it. music makes you lose control

This album is an extremely accurate example of all the dance sounds of the early 2000s. Decent. 3/5

This was a lot more fun that some of the other recent electronic albums (looking at you Goldie) In terms of my personal enjoyment I'd only really give it a 2 but I'm feeling generous today

I've definitely got a soft spot for electronic music like this, that comes straight from early-2000's video game soundtracks. I'd never listen to this based on the cover art. The music is pretty good. If I was in the right mood I'd definitely listen to it more.

Playing catch-up after a distracting weekend, so keeping this short. Right off the bat, I'm seeing that most of the album is unavailable on Spotify, which is too bad. Kinda defeats the purpose of this exercise, but whattaya gonna do? What they did have was either fine to decent, but nothing really knocked my socks off. Giving it a generous 3, but it's probably closer to 2.5 stars.

Decent dance album, but not the best. I did learn that "Music Makes You Lose Control" is a full Les Rythmes Digitales song & not just a Missy Elliott blip. I had no idea of this band's influence on some of my favorite artists, so kudos to the artist. It just didn't move me (pun intended) the way I had hoped.

Surprisingly good. Benefits from higher quality speakers. It’s not usually my genre and a lot of the tracks kind of blended together, which I guess is the point with a dance album

house beats. french. just daft punk but not as creative

Sigh, 90's electronica/trance. hard to explain listening to cd after cd in search of that one tune in 50 that would blow your mind. This album was more accessible than a lot if it.

Some fun electronic stuff, not the best we've had on the list

Not a lot of info about why this is on the list, it's perfectly acceptable dance music but nothing special. Sometimes was probably the standout for me.

It was ok. Not my preferred dance music. Maybe if i heard it out instead of in my office.

I’ve had fun with the new wave, but once we get into techno or electronica, you lose me. I still can’t wrap my head around that. This isn’t BAD, persay, but it’s really not my thing at all, aside from a couple of solid hooks. I’ll give it a D, but I’ll also go up to 3 stars out of fairness.

Sort of a less impressive Fatboy Slim. There's some gold in here mixed in with a lot of generic 90s Brit Beats

French dance music, yeah okay. But a 1001AYMHBYD? (5/10) FT: Sometimes

6/10 not bad but pretty boring. Some bangers but the Lyrics were poor

Passable dance music but goes a little long. 5/10

Normally not a fan of this genre. This album was actually quitte okay. Bit too long for me though. Favourite song: - Sometimes

It was interesting- some songs weren't available

There was a point somewhere in the middle where a number of the songs sounded exactly the same. I mean, the vocalists he got were of, although "Disco II Disco" was REALLY annoying. And hey, it's Nik Kershaw! Haven't heard him in a while. The last song I really enjoyed, too. There was a really interesting video for it up on YouTube. But a lot of the stuff was very same-y, so yeah. Not something I am going to come back to. I am sure this club stuff is big, but just not a fan. But the few high points make me round up to a 3.

So I saw this was late 90's dance and thought ugh. Pleasantly surprised. I really dug the first two tracks - funky beats and I didn't mind him repeating the same lyrics over and over. However, it got kind of weak around his first "big" song (Hey You what's that sound?). Sounded a bit like the Ghostbusters theme - it was still good, but just, and things went downhill over the next few tracks. Way too robotic sounding. Some redemption in tracks 9-11 (bringing in a guest singer on Sometimes was a good move). Ultimately I say great start, but it faded and ended up just a little too uneven.

Oh, this is fun. Strong early 80s dance and new wave vibes in a 90s electro-pop package. I usually complain about the length of some of these electronic albums, but I didn't really feel that as much here. I might have dropped maybe two songs to make it tighter. Otherwise, it's pretty great. Fave Songs: Brothers, Hypnotise, Hey you what's that sound, Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat)

Pretty straightforward electronic beats, some good rhythms and samples but nothing too challenging. A little safe.

I knew this was Jacques Le Cont, I hadn't realised he was American! Sounds very mid 2000s when I was into all this stuff. A good few bangers

Probudih se, vidim cover i naziv, reko neki francuski dance housish album, imo sam pravo, poslušo par pjesama, nije za baciti, al cover albuma je. I onda dalje slušajuć me sve više privuklo da završim taj album.

An intriguing album filled with high-energy synth-pop, ranging from the catchy to the slightly irritating. M83 it's not, but it's worth a listen.

Some cracking tunes on this album. Also some meh, reflecting my final rating...

2 albums du meem genre en 2 jours. The shamen le jour precedent. 3*

Great slab of 90's dance music

Average album Really techno orientated music

Well it hits its mark and keeps going.

Generally speaking, a lot better sounding and engaging than other electronic albums on the list. Nevertheless, I cannot find these albums to be something truly great.

Electro! Not hugely varied though

This is one electronic album that has actually grasped me and made me interested throughout its entirety. A lot of these songs do exactly what they want you to: get up, dance and have a fun time listening to it. It's really well produced and include interesting, diverse instrumentals. Unfortunately, the repetitive lyrics of electro-dance music is just not something that sits well with my brain, and these tracks take that up. Less is more for me with this genre, but a lot of these songs give off immaculate energy and enjoyment. Favorite Song: Music makes you lose control Least Favorite: Hypnotise

Pretty cool beats and noises. Not sure I’d repeat listen to the whole album but the odd track here and there.

interesting electronic music.

Hmmmm, couldn't quite get into this. I prefer my electronica to be either more banging, or more chin strokey, or ideally both. The album seemed to get better as it went on, though - definitely enjoyed the second half more. Fave track - "Damaged People" for sure!

Kuitenkin omassa genressään oikein sujuvaa, kolmosen arvoista matskua!

pretty fun French electrofunk, if only over half the songs weren't missing on Spotify. Also funny music make you lose control.

Quite fun French dance.

Plenty of good tunes on here, What’s That Sound etc… Great production and I suppose on release Electro was not as ubiquitous as it is now in pop music. A lot of this was on heavy rotation, mainly Jacques Your Body, and it is definitely an influential album. I’d rarely want to listen to it but it is good.

Some great tunes in this album and someone I always enjoyed DJing in the early naughties - no surprise he went on to bigger things but there’s a reason I hadn’t listened to this album in years and it’s just because it’s ultimately kind of forgettable

3.5/5 Funky and upbeat music, I'll relisten it in the future.

Me when I started: There is zero chance I am listening to 1hr 39min of this. Me 1hr 39min later: I changed my mind. I’m kinda fucking with this.”

In order to stand out with house music, you need to make unique production choices that can elevate the sound overall. Les Rythems Digitales does that to some extent, but it feels like it falls flat more often than not. "From Disco to Disco" uses these great dirty synths and "Music makes you lose control" samples a bassline that seems out of place for house music but works extremely well. But then you get tracks like "Dreamin'" and "Sometimes" that are a bit more boring. With such a mixed bag, it's hard to outright say if this album is good or bad. I think it's definitely worth it's salt in one way or another, just not the best thing to grace this list.

Weird but decent

Fun! A bit long but some great bangers in there

holy 90s dude

Too much repetition and electric beat for me in general, though by the Erasure-like song Sometimes it gets more melodic and I started grooving.

Hvordan rater man det her album?

I thought this would be brutal and I was wrong. Pretty pleasant.

Can’t say there was much I really enjoyed here, there was nothing too offensive but largely not my vibe. Not the kind of album I hoped would bring up my 1 year on the challenge.

Loved the vibes and got me dancing until every single song had the same formula - repetition repetition repetition! Hurt my brain after a bit sadly. Favs - dreamin’, hypnotise and take a little time

I don't want to be the no fun guy, but this music just wasn't that good to my ears. Maybe if I blasted it on a huge subwoofer, but until then 2/5

As someone who had a lot of dance music forced on me in the 90s and 00s, thanks to the ills of British radio and numerous whip-loving vixens, I still have no idea who these guys are. Never heard of them or the album, but presumably this contains a one hit wonder I've heard. I suppose you need to have a French album on the list somewhere, but it this representative of the country? It sounds at once like the soundtrack to a PS1 era snowboarding game. It also sounds incredibly dated, even by 1999. It sounds early 80s, like it should instead have been on the Beverly Hill Cop soundtrack or something. Like most dance albums, each track has maybe 30 seconds of content, which is looped until even the artist got bored. Maybe they'll throw in a vocal at some point, which again becomes part of the inescapable loop. It's not very good. Take A Little Time at least attempts to be a song, coming across as a half-decent 80s Madonna rip-off, and Sometimes isn't terrible. That saves the album from being a 1 star. I did know Jacques Your Body when it came on, ticking the one hit wonder box I mentioned earlier.

Never heard of this before, not a bad breakbeat album, probably 2 stars cause I wouldn't care too much to come back to this. Once again, third day in a row I just switch back to Miles 2nd quintet to refresh my ear pallate haha

I would definitely put this on again if i needed to dance, but it is a bit too repetitive as an album to be anything other than background or sweat music.

I’m don’t really dance.

So, it's an ok album - it's not the best thing I've ever heard. I confess, I skipped to the middle of several tracks just to get thru them. HOWEVER, "Hey you what's that sound?" was sampled on either a 2 Many DJs or Fatboy Slim mix and I'd never heard the original. I was honestly floored when that song started. And it's a banger so, that's the one big caveat on this album. Still 2 stars, but damn that song is catchy.

Just kinda nothing special, almost sounds like Daft Punk but really just feels like a dollar store in the early 2000's.

This was not good. And not short

Lonnnnnnng

It wasn't objectionable and it was actually catchy at times. But mostly it's generic and unmemorable.

Album 85 Top 3 "favorites" off the album: Sometimes, Jacques Your Body Makes Me Sweat, Disco II disco Gotta be honest: saw a French name, got excited for potential language practice, and then did not get that. Oh well. The opening track made me think that this was going to be a clubbing album and I'm not much of a clubgoer. I was wrong. I ended up just as disappointed in this one as I would have been if it had been a clubbing album, though, so it's not like it got any worse. Brothers and Jacques Your Body Makes Me Sweat sound like they would be on RuPaul's Drag Race somewhere. This got tiring to listen to. All of it. Now that I think about it, maybe this would do fine in the club. Who's really thinking about how repetitive it gets, anyway? Did not enjoy, will not be coming back to. At least it's not Bob Dylan.

super nervig

Man. I tried, but this is just not very good video game music

This is my first listen to Les Rythmes Digitales and I'm not quite sure how to feel. The electronic rhythms and production are pretty decent, but they very quickly suffer from too much repetition, and, in turn, this repetition reveals how just unimpressive the album is. It's a shame, because I do really like the keyboards and the general sounds of Darkdancer, even the period of electronic music it was released in, but this is just subpar. I fail to see what is 'essential' or emblematic of a genre or style here. Highlights: "Sometimes"

Not great, it's built for the clubs so it tries to get away with stretching small offerings into a big listen, little did it know it'd end up on the almighty 1001 Albums list. Not the album's fault, it just wanted to dance, but it's here, it's repetitive, it's only so interesting, tracks like From Disco and Jacques Your Body really sell the album as sometimes just being a bland clubber pack, and I have to judge it

From Disco to Disco might be the most annoying song I've listened to all year. Not my cup of tea at all but not unlistenable.

started off bad but by the end I was slightly brainwashed 2.5

The trouble with this kind of music, is that it borders between catchy and annoying. This album leaned more towards the latter.

Electronic music is, by definition, indulgent, & there's a fine & obscure line between a salubrious indulgence & one that mostly hits all the wrong notes whilst leaving you empty & emptied. Darkdancer, tho it starts often decent, satisfies the latter description, a record that offers no hope, no health, & no purpose. I'm more ambivalent about electro-pop than I am about any other genre in that I know almost immediately if I'm into it or if I can't stand it. I don't have much to say about this album: it fails somatically b/c it extends no bridge to the body & it fails cognitively b/c I can't imagine this guy doing anything interesting in the studio. The only thing I can dig is the cover art, which is distinctly turn-of-the-century-esqe. Mostly, I'll keep my distance.

These guys wanna be daft punk sooooo bad

This could have been an email (ipv 2 cd's)

Not my thing unfortunately. Although I like Europop, this is so incredibly repetitive.

puntje extra voor sophie

Some okay dance music. Nothing amazing for this time period but it's a nice listen. There wasn't anything that really stood out or got me moving but it wasn't bad. Probably not something I would listen to again.

1.5/5 Nothing great on this album but I didn't mind some of the tracks. There were some good hooks in there but ultimately it didn't grab me.

This music does not make me lose control.

I'm not really interested in this style. This may be good (or not). I can listen to this but I'm not very excited. It does not help that it is almost one hour long. Two stars are enough.

I was surprised when I saw this came out in 1999, some tracks sounds much more like the early 90s. Otherwise very meh dance music, nothing that would make me want to listen again.

Imagine how much of a dreck the rest of the selection of electronica albums on this is when I say this is a surprise how good it is yet its still a 2/5

Still, better than Kanye West.

Too repetitive and boring.

Not great honestly

Despite this not being my style at all, it opened on a more interesting and unique note than I expected, then totally fell flat with monotonous same-same beats through the majority, then tried a slight revival of interest to close. Overall a slight miss for me.

Derfor to stjerner. Top 3: Dreamin’, Take a Little Time, Music Makes You Lose Control

Very funky, very groovy. Didn't like every song but there were a few bops.

I mean, what are we doing here? Top 1000 albums of all time? Its largely inoffensive but it feels like i've just walked out of a club with my ears ringing, its not that annoying because I'm still drunk, but i still want it to go away. And it went on for too long, with songs that sounded way too similar. 2/5 I'm not including the remixes over and over again in the ranking, but everything else is there. Dreamin' 6 Music Makes You Lose Control 5 Soft Machine 3 Hypnotise 3 What's That Sound 5 Take a Little Time 4 From: Disco To: Disco 2 Brothers 5 Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat) 3 About Funk 2 Sometimes 4 Damaged People 2 Steps Ahead 5 Energy 3 Nancy Jamaica 6

I think they did a great job at encapsulating the energy or the vibe they were going for, its just not for me personally

Before listening: The first album on this site when both album and artist are new for me. Exciting. Combination of cover and the name is funny. I guess I expect some funky electronica that will be more on accessible side from some edgier contemporaries. Post listening: It was genuinely fun. The best I can say about this album is that it, like nothing else, fills me with nostalgia for the simple times. Wanted to dance the whole time. But everything exists in a context. And in the context of all the electronic acts of the time and albums released 95-01 this is probably the most forgettable. Come on, Discovery was released in 01, the chemical brothers were all over the place, the prodigy, fat boy slim. Honestly I’m not surprised in the slightest that I never heard about this album. Do I regret time spent? Not at all. Will I listen to it in the future? Probably not. Favorite tracks: Music makes you lose control, soft machine Least favorite tracks: MDC, about funk

It’s not bad. Was excited to find an album in a genre/ time I loved but by song two it felt like it was the product of a class on how to make that kind of music.

The origin of Music makes you lose control(eh this isnt the origin, but rather a sample of a sample lol) that would be later sampled by Missy Elliot, I hear the synth of Sweet Dreams are made of these in Hypnotise The artist is Stuart Price aka Thin White Duke aka Jacques Lu Cont who would later produce albums by Madonna, The Killers, Kane From disco to disco vocals should've been more masked its way too on your face and it's clear that it is a sample slowed down. Sometimes is the highlight of the album, wish the rest of the project had more variety on the lyrics or samples used. I guess this is more about this person who made it in the music industry rather than what the album actually offers.

Fun album, but very annoying at times. Short songs make it not suck, but long album does make it kinda suck. What are sentences?

Average 90s techno. That is all. 3.5/10 Top song I guess... Jacques your body makes me sweat

Weak sauce here. Weird choice for the list. Definitely better electronic albums out there. One good song Hey You... even that sounds tired after 27 years. Bonus point for having Nik Kershaw on a track.

Elektronische Musik

It’s a vibe, but it’s also a bit of a monotonous vibe.

From: Disco to: Disco is the most annoying song I've ever heard. Some interesting samples, but largely forgettable. "Damaged People" felt like a 45 second song stretched to 6+ minutes... terrible way to end the album.

Electro house album pulling from disco, funk, pop, and a bit of acid house. As with many electronic dance records, there’s a few songs that really land, a handful of meh, and a few points where it gets annoying. Overall, this one’s forgettable but it’s not particularly bad.

Some good tracks, some not so much

It’s always dope to hear where some of your favorite songs derive from. Other than that this album was tough to get through because it just sounded like one long song at times.

Son😭✌️ Why the FUCK is this on such list called ALBUMS YOU NEED TO HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE? So random.

Might sound ok in a club but a difficult listen otherwise. Last 2 tracks were ok but the rest I found monotonous.
