Reviews (page 11 of 13)

The album has a late night lounge feel. The Murder Mystery kinda ruins the vibe, but Pale Blue Eyes is devastating

Rock. Folk. Oscila entre lo aburrido y lo psicodélico

fine. very forgettable. double layering on murder mystery is all that gets it a 3 rather than 2

Somehow Velvet Underground just really not my vibe

Fine but would not seek this out to listen to again.

It was just ok. More songs that weren't as good as were. Nothing that really stood out to me or blew me away.

Probably their most listenable release. Good, not great.

I didn’t enjoy it that much but I feel like it was better than it seemed to me. Possibly could grow on me but first listen it’s just kinda draggy and bland. A few of the songs were decent but overall not my favorite.

A mainstream rock album that was less experimental than I expected, only knowing their John Cale albums

Haven't really listened to VU much if at all. I really like the music. Polished.

This has northern the ART of 'w/Nico" nor the POWER of 'loaded'. It's not even as fuckedup as 'light/heat'

Being it was my first listen through, felt a little bit underwhelmed. However, I have a vague feeling that I would enjoy more in subsequent plays and through more intentionally listening to the lyrics. Otherwise feel pretty neutral

Not really my thing, a bit dull

5.5/10 - did not have to listen to. Was not expecting it to sound like this. The lyricism was not great and the instrumentals were inconsistent. I also dislike the vocals throughout, but especially the woman’s. 1. Pale Blue Eyes 2. What Goes On 3. That’s the Story of My Life 4. I’m Set Free 5. Jesus 6. The Murder Mystery 7. Some Kinda Love 8. Candy Says 9. Beginning to See the Light 10. After Hours

I think this album is nice. It was simple, pleasant, and sounded nice while listening to it. Then I got to “The Murder Mystery” and felt a total whiplash. Maybe I need to listen to it again, but it really ruined the vibe the album had previously set up. I think that if you are going to experiment, it’s better to do it across the whole project and not just throw it in at the end… dunno. Good album, though. Favorite tracks: I’m Set Free, Pale Blue Eyes 3

As good as this band is, and for as much as Lou commands the direction of the album, this one kind of missed the mark for me. I never cared for the decision to scale back on the “abrasiveness” of White Light, and I would’ve preferred a continuation on the weird train. That said, Pale Blue Eyes is a beautiful track, and this is still far from a bad album.

Much more main stream sound from the Velvet Underground for this album. Lyrics aren't as dark and songs have almost a pop feel. Lou Reed is clearly the star.

Gammalt men mysigt

Like it alright. Repetitive lyrically but the music is very layered and fun. Highlights: Pale Blue Eyes. Not sure where i've heard this one previously but this gave a hit of nostalgia I wasn't prepared for. After Hours. This was a nice change of pace from the nightmare that was Murder Mystery. Lowlights: The Murder Mystery was a real freakin' weird one.

Rating: +++ It was good, not amazing. I particularly appreciate Pale Blue Eyes (my favourite of the album). Also, the last song was quite interesting in its composition. It makes me want to discover more of the band, which, to be honest, I've heard of but not properly listened to.

i do like some of the velvet underground’s other songs, but the only songs that really stood out to me on this album were “pale blue eyes” and “after hours” (which i had heard before). “candy says”, “jesus”, and “that’s the story of my life” weren’t bad either. i liked the calming, simple vibes of those songs. overall, i only really liked half of the songs in the album.

not bad

Way too slow and dreamy for my tastes.

less personality than the solo lou reed stuff, and the lou reed i expected only came out on the 3rd track. love how they let the instrumental shine. fav songs: candy says, some kinda love

I thought this was softer sounding than I would associate with the Velvet Underground. Quite straightforward folky songs for the most part, with a couple of noteable exceptions. With it being self titled I assumed it was their first album so I was quite surprised this was their 3rd album and was an attempt at back to basics. I liked it fine but it feels like a step back from The Velvet Underground and Nico

Very relaxed album. Never hit the charts either cause it wasnt getting much marketing. Andy warhol managed this group. This is my first impression of them. Its a pleasant listen, albeit murder mystery was a cool concept track, it didnt need to be 8 minutes. Some of it felt beatlesesque, while some of it would make for good driving music.

A far cry from previous Velvet Underground albums I have listened to thus far on my 1001 Albums journey. A marked change in styling and sound make it feel like a different band. Not sure if I quite enjoyed their third outing as much as the previous two, much of the album feels very preachy and, an allegory for finding and becoming a part of the Christian denomination church. Best: What Goes On Worst: Jesus

The indie influence is strong. Mostly soft and melodical. I can always hear the likes of The Vines, The Strokes, etc… To me it just lacks anything that I would be keen on rehearing.

So so album of some of their lesser known songs

classic but not for me

Prima rustig album

Not quite what I was expecting

6.5/10

probably not a great introduction to the underground. i see the vision and was partial to passages textually but wasn’t caught melodically anywhere.

Got better 2nd time

Already heard

Tame compared to earlier works, didn't really grab my attention. Still not bad though

Would have loved to have been around when Velvet Underground were releasing music, must have sounded groundbreaking and unreal at the time. The last 55 years has been relatively kind to it, with it not sounding overly dated, but I still can't deny if it was released today I wouldn't be particularly bothered by it. 3.5*, let down by one or two tracks (Jesus was crap)

Cat: This is really beautiful and fun! Love the vocal harmonies and the stripped down folk rock sound. AJ: ripper of an opener. Christ. What Goes On… instant love. Some of it is very cool. Hip if you will. Hoping you won’t. Some of it stupid art poop. What Goes on, great tune, though. Cool It Down.

BL: after being incredibly Dissapointed by the velvet underground & nico, I’ll have to see how this one makes me feel. I’ll approach it as if I’ve never heard VU before AL: I liked this a lot more than VU&N but this still wasn’t massively my thing. I can tell they refined their sound and developed their ideas. Shedding Nico was smart too, I think she’s an awful singer. I loved the opener and closer. And the rest of it was pretty good. Can’t say I’d go back to it anytime soon though. FT: “candy says” “after hours” 3/5

Kinda boring

Interesting. Pretty cool sound but I have to say that Lou Reed has a voice like Bob Dylan without the depth of language.

Good shit!!!! Kinda gets redundant sadly within 9 songs, but can definitely see how this album is influential to many

Only liked pale blue eyes and after hours. Murder mystery is cool at the end and the rest of the album I found bland. Rating: 3.1

Very beatles-y. First song was pretty good, got a bit weird with the Jesus song lol. The last few tracks were interesting as well, got funky.

Not something I'd seek out but ok.

Listened Before? N An album truly ahead of its time. 60s music that sounds like 90s indie rock... amazing. Good stuff. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Pale Blue Eyes

Sounds like shit and needs a remaster lol Love the folk almost swamp rock sound. But run run run was grating on the right side, and I don’t like nicos voice. But it’s easy listening and they do neat things with the left right balance. I do understand why it’s a cult classic tho. Really surprised non of it charted.

Decent. Wished it rocked out a little more. Take away the lead and closing tracks and it's pretty much a Lou Reed solo album. I prefer Transformer but again, this was OK.

Not their best work, in my opinion, but a pretty good album nonetheless. The lo-fi touch is also pretty interesting for the era.

There are wonderful tracks in this album, like Candy Says, Pale Blue Eyes or The Murder Mystery. It's an obviously influencial band that went lofi when everything was going more and more refined. However, most of the album is boring and uninteresting. I know it's cool to make lofi stuff, but strumming a badly toned guitar without any sense of melody might be not enough.

They have better albums

No! Did not age well.

I like it.

It was ok. No hits that I had known, but great voices.

Very easy listening but nothing that truly stands out. I prefer their debut album.

Very chilled and relaxing - which is really nice if you’re in need of this vibe. I thought I couldn’t stand Lou Reed - but it turns out that’s just certain songs I’ve heard too many times over. Overall I enjoyed this one.

Cool psych work

Pale Blue Eyes <33333

Didn't expect to enjoy this as much based on the book. Some very nice songs here.

I don’t know how to feel about this. I don’t think it deserves all the praise buts it’s def a different sound from other music at the time

It was really good. Just wish I hadn’t chosen to listen to it while working. A little to distracting for that but a very fun experimental album especially for the time

Loved it

Ist ok aber overrated

Very much enjoyed this. Good vibes, man.

Decent. Looking forward to the follow-up albums.

I think the funnest thing about listening to albums from the 60s is trying to figure out how baked they were when they made it. I liked this one, instrumentals are easy listening and the singers got a good voice. Some songs were a Lil boring with meh lyrics. Fav song was Murder Mystery. I can definitely hear some Hendrick influence in Some Kinda Love.

This feels a lot more accessible than the one with the banana. It was ok, chilled out and decent. Still probably would listen again though…

A decent album. But still, just say ‘no’, kids...

Hehe, banana. I like the album cover, and now I finally know where this iconic banana comes from! Sunday morning: It is a sunday morning! Femme fatale: Is this woman a part of the band? I have heard her voice before. Venus In Furs: This start of the song is a bit weird. Heroin: This is a good build up! OK it is a long build up. Still a good song though! At the end it gets a bit weird with that guitar. European Son: There is a balance between music and noise. This is noise. Overall ok album, but too much noise. This is not an album I want on a vinyl. The rating is between 2.5-3.

Chill, einige Dud Tracks. Anfang des Albums besser

A good album. I like The Velvet Underground. The Murder Mystery is a bit too experimental to be listenable but the rest of the album is easy listening!

Not bad but not for me

This album threw me for a trip. I had the expected The Velvet Underground was in the realms of Bowie and The Rolling Stones but then 2/3 of this album was "I wanna be the Beatles" type stuff. BUT, get to the last three songs and it's like a completely different group. Wow. The Murder Mystery totally saved this album from the grand level Meh experience it had been providing.

I'm probably being too harsh but I'll never revisit this

Chill rock. Except for The Murder Mystery, that one felt like all the voices in my head came together to sing a very confusing song.

3 One of the few albums that’s gotten on my nerves so much that I couldn’t finish it was Velvet Underground + Nico. It was noisy and generally annoying. It can be iconic, idgaf. So I went into this a little cynical but I think that may have helped in the long run. I didn’t care fire most if this album but there are definitely moments that I liked. I think the album gets more compelling near the end where the tempo picks up a bit. I found the 9 minute track really interesting which surprised me. The Velvet Underground are for sure not for me but I can honestly see why people like them so much. Favorites: What Goes On, Beginning to See The Light, I’m Set Free, The Murder Mystery, After Hours, Jesus

3.5 Soooo confession time, I’ve never listened to a Velvet Underground album. I know how acclaimed both the band and Lou Reed is, but it’s just never been something I’ve gotten around to checking out. Now, I’m not really sure if this album in particular is the best jumping in point for the band, but it was a lot softer than I expected? I know they’re famous for influencing alternative rock, and I can definitely hear that, but I can also very much hear how they fit in with the era. Like, if I didn’t know any better, I could believe Candy Says is a Beatles song. From there, things kicked in with What Goes On, and I was starting to see what all the fuss was about, but then it mellowed right back out again. Not much of the middle was particularly interesting for me on my first play, but I found the song Pale Blue Eyes sticking with me afterwards. After giving a re-listen (or two), I gotta admit it’s an absolutely beautiful tune that has really grown on me, and I can definitely see why it’s their most played song on Spotify. The album ends strongly with The Murder Mystery and After Hours, both of which I thought were two of the more unique tracks and did a good job of creating a sense of finale. While it didn’t blow my mind, there’s nothing bad on the album, and when it has its highs they’re pretty high. If the few songs I really liked weren’t enough to make me want to check out more of their work, my dad calling me after a day of binging their discography to express his regret over not rating this higher definitely did. And yes Dad, Heroin is a great tune :)

it’s just ok. The bigger songs from this album are famous for a reason but also the murder mystery fucking sucks and the track list as a whole is not the most consistent. best tracks: candy says, pale blue eyes, Jesus

I like the bass and guitar tones and interplay. The first half of the record is very sleepy and I thought I was listening to a collection of lullabies. Lou Reed's voice is very identifiable but not my favorite. I prefer their drummer Maureen's voice as heard on the last two tracks. Nothing stuck out as a must hear and share with the world but I could see this being played as background music. I'm between 3 and 4. I'll probably revisit this album since I've only ever listened to it this one time in my life but I should give it another chance on another day.

I have no strong feelings about this album except the long weird Murder Mystery. I am not a fan of that song.

Some songs were actually good but some were boring. i guess thats life innit

I grew up in Lou Reed's twilight years so I primarily think of him as the misogynist and anti-Semite who feuded with Susan Boyle. All that aside, he's not a strong vocalist, and yet his even weaker bandmates also sing on this album. I don't have time to get into the lower standards we set for male vocalists, but I'm just not sure the writing is compelling enough to make this album worth a lot. It started to grow on me by the end, but I don't know that I would revisit more than a handful of tracks in the future. Standout tracks: What Goes On, Beginning To See The Light

Traverses the thin line between boring and pleasant

A little mixed on this one, Side one first few tracks start down a good road but there are a couple I can avoid. Candy Says, Pale Blue Eyes are both excellent but The Murder Mystery is that type of 60s track you hear and think it's almost a parody. Right down the middle, 3 stars for me.

It was a bit slow. Interesting though, sort of psychedelic rock from the 60s. Not very memorable.

Not 4* because his singing can piss me off every now and then

Think I expected more rock from this album and instead got a mix with quieter ballad type songs. Highlights were "Beginning to see the Light" and "I'm Set Free"

Fuzzy and warm.

Much more accessible than “…and Nico” LP. Having said that I found The Murder Mystery experimental track pretty interesting and arresting! Altogether an OK listenable 1960s LP, nothing special, but I’m no big fan. Gets a three because it’s not awful!

Chill, mellow and a bit bland

cooooool

kinda lame, last track is the only one worth listening to

Not bad

Kinda distracted while listening, nothing stuck out too much

It’s fine. Probably prefer Velvet Underground and Nico, but not by a lot. Favorite song: “After Hours”. “Murder Mystery” was pretty strange in comparison to the rest. Don’t like how mellow their music sounds most of the time.

The Velveteen Underground

I think this is one of those albums that is hard to listen to out of context of where The Velvet Underground were at the time. I watched a Todd Haynes documentary on the band on Apple TV and have a renewed appreciation, especially of Lou Reed and John Cale (who is not on this album). This album is slow but lyrically interesting and exhibits some of Reed's experimentation after asking Cale to leave the band. I am looking forward to seeing more of Reed's and Cale's work on this list.

Some nice slow rock ballads on here, along with some psychedelic elements and even some folk. Enjoyed, but not the best, I'd give it a 5-6/10

Not as good as their previous album, but it still contains some incredible songs. Favourite songs are: Candy Says(fav), Pale Blue Eyes (fav), Jesus, I'm Set Free, That's The Story Of My Life, After Hours (fav). Although I find myself bored from some of the other songs, these highs really make it a good album for me. Love the softer more melodic songs.

I've mix feelings on this record, on the other hand it has beautiful songs such as Candy Says, Pale Blue Eyes, and After Hours, but I also feel not as interested on the other tracks as those 3. It's not bad, it's just not really appealing to me, it's still enjoyable though. What Goes On could've been much shorter and the three continuous tracks' story (from Jesus to I'm Set Free) are basically a guy getting enlightened, which is again not an appealing story to me. To sum up, I like some of it, and the others are kind of meh to me. Maybe in a future road trip I might play this album just for the vibe.

Listened to on 9/19/22 3/5 Favorite song: pale blue eyes This album was good - some of the songs had weird chaotic noises but most of them were great and easy background music

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Some Kinda Love (3) 2 - Beginning To See the Light (6) 3 - Pale Blue Eyes (4)

I have certainly heard of The Velvet Underground before, but I had never taken the time to learn more about them or listen to their music. I felt like this was a good introduction. I enjoyed the relaxing instrumentals, lyrical content was cool too. I didn't know Lou Reed was involved with them. Pretty good album., nothing too special.

A surprisingly good album considering the new direction. I enjoyed hearing the other members' voices throughout.

After pale blue eyes was tight. But the first few tracks really turned me off. Murder mystery was a weird highlight

Listened before: no Enjoyed: I think Listened: 3 times felt it was a bit depressing the first 2 times. The third listen had my full attention and I fully appreciated the quiet, mellow sound What goes on & Pale Blue eyes stood out

3.5 stars. Enjoyable, soft-listening indie feel. "Pale Blue Eyes" is beautiful, "The Murder Mystery" is strange but I liked it.

Weird but ok

I've heard VU and Nico before but never actually listened to any other albums. Pale Blue Eyes seems like the standout here but the basslines are killer. Lou Reed knew what was up. Not a super big fan of the music but clearly a very influential band.

The Velvet Underground is a band that cool people always had on their list of favorites but I never heard them on their stereo or in their mix tapes. Was the aura of the band enough? The album has plenty to share. After Hours was even just a little pleasant surprise that could be thrown into any number of spotfiy lists. Maybe it was all just too personal to share. This is a replayable album. It has a consistent tone. It isn't hard to see why some would say it is borish. You get the critics about how it was mix by Reed. There are not enough flaws though to keep it from shining overall.

Expected a bit more from this - it's all a bit too gentle for my liking. There are a couple of songs that step it up a bit (Beginning To See The Light probably my favourite), but tough to give this any more than a 3.

Interessant. Angenehm. Gut für nebenbei hören.

Not their best but it still had its moments

Considering it's age, this was quite an enjoyable listen. Definitely can hear Lou Reed's folk-tinged rock sound that developed in later recordings

Velvet Underground’s third album is such a big departure from “White Light/White Heat.” Apparently it was the removal of John Cale that was largely responsible for the shift, paired with Lou Reed’s desire to head in a more palatable and marketable direction. First listening to it right after “White Light,” I was bored. But I think that was just a comedown from the chaos of the previous album. On “Velvet Underground,” you get a flash of the former on “Murder Mystery,” while “Pale Blue Eyes” is the most successful of the new direction. As much as “White Light” was an influence for the future of punk and noise rock, “Velvet Underground” suggests much of the lo-fi indie folk to come decades later, especially on “After Hours,” the album closer that wouldn’t feel out-of-place in the indie rock scene of the mid-00s, nearly straight out of the “Juno” soundtrack.

Olipahan taas vaikeesti arvioitava levy. Kokonaisuus jättää toivomisen varaa ja ajoittain ärsyttävyyden ylittävää tasoa, mutta parhaimmillaan taas oikein viihdyttävää settiä.

Pretty nice.

decent album, pale blue eyes is an all time favorite

Uncomplicated music (except for a track or two) easy to listen to

Pretty cool old-school psych rock.

Never been that into VU

hoping this is as pretty as i hope

Eh, idk, it's fine

The avant garde tracks on it are the most interesting. The garage band sound elsewhere is not that inspiring. But enjoyable

Now that I've listened to three of their albums, this is probably their best. A little more subdued and a little more melodic. But I already gave them a 4 for their sophomore album (mostly to be extreme) so I can't give them another one. And this one feels like a sellout anyway - rather than stay true to themselves they (or Lou) went with a record to pander to the masses. Sounds like such a Nickelback thing to do. Fine album, nothing overly memorable other than maybe the songs with Yule on vocals (quite enjoyed Candy Says and Jesus). And I'd like to forget the last two songs (The Murder Mystery and After Hours - keep Tucker off vocals).

The Velvet Underground was a pleasant surprise. "Pale Blue Eyes" was the only track I had heard before, and it might be my favorite song from the band. "What Goes On" is a new favorite from this album. With the other music that I've heard from the Velvet Underground, I am tempted to like it but I don't quite get there. This album didn't hit those same roadblocks, with one exception. "The Murder Mystery" was confusing and noisy, and I'd prefer to skip that track.

I was interested the read how each member of the band was encouraged to sing. When it came to that last track I got curious about this "Moe" person. I really wish I hadn't but good practice is seperating the art from the political. Pale Blue Eyes just steals the show for me.

A more relaxed and low-key affair from a usually eclectic band. Could use some more uptempo tracks, but what's here is enjoyable and listenable enough as is.

I enjoyed the slow and melancholy tone but overall didn't much like the album. Felt a bit repetitive and boring.

Kinda mixed.

I liked it but maybe wasn’t in the mood for it

not great but not bad either

This album was pretty awesome, actually. I don't think I can give it a 4, but it's real, real close. Some Kinda Love and Pale Blue Eyes are two of my new favorite songs.

Not very exiting, a few good songs at the end, that´s it.

Enjoyable. Not my fav underground

pretty boring

This was a fun little album, I gave them some grace since I've heard of the band but haven't dived into any albums and as background music it was enjoyable. Like a hang out at night in the 60's. Pale Blue Eyes stuck out to me but the rest blended together.

Sounded good but was pretty boring.

Had higher expectations but willing to register or go to more of their stuff

This was okay, I am not sure what doesn't click with me on this but it just seems fine...

Decent album, didnt have any skips. A bunch of lo-fi classic rock, with some psychadelic trippiness and bonkers experimentation mixed in.

It's probably just me but Candy Says has always really annoyed me as an album opener. It is a decent enough song but feels much more like a slow paced, mid-album song. Other than that the album is fine but is just kind of pales into insignificance in comparison to the spikier, edgier, more difficult early albums. There's lot on here that just sounds a bit too much like cleaner, duller, more grown-up versions of older VU songs.

Good for a song or 2 just like Lou Reed

middle-of-the-road, mellow acoustic rock

Not nearly as good as I expected or as good as people make it out to be..

I just like their other albums so much better

Enjoyed Jesus and After Hours. Hated The Murder Mystery

Starts really well. Very nice album. Lou Reed has a great voice. Peaceful. Some Kinda Love and Pale Blue Eyes are stand out. Takes a complete u turn at murder mystery which is a fucking mess. Completely different and completely shite 4 stars before that unfortunately. Let yourselves down the velvet underground

I always forget how many hook-ish songs Lou Reed wrote. The Murder Mystery is one of those songs. So are Candy Love and After Hours. I always think I'm going to dislike a Velvet Underground record, but then I listen to it and I do.

5/10 = 50%

I liked it! You can tell Stephen Malkmus really liked the velvet underground lol

Dillon-esque, loving a bit of lou reed

Fine, if you like this kinda stuff, not offensive

First track was dreary but I enjoyed the rest

One of the original indie sad boi greats. I like the Velvet Underground, it always reminds me of Adventureland which is a fantastic film. They're not easy listening though, and this isn't an album I'd go to by choice, nor would I say everything here is a banger. 3/5

I'm not a big fan of the Velvet Underground, but I enjoyed the laid back sound of this record, which is fairly different from their more iconic debut album. Their music can be quite inconsistent and unpolished, like listening to a band whose songs aren't quite ready. But I quite liked the casual bohemianism of this one, and at the same time it felt like a precursor to lo-fi indie music. 3*

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Pale blue eyes, Murder mystery

Completed

Beatles pótlék kicsit, a 60-as években újítónak/progresszívnek számíthatott.

Strange. Love me some Lou Reed though.

Chill, not bad

Bonitas canciones como la famosa Pale Blue Eyes pero también Whats goes on, I'm set free, That's the story of my life o After hours.

It's been quite a while since I've given this a listen, probably since my early 20s. From what I remember, it was a pretty big departure from TVU&N and WL/WH, and as I revisit it, I can see why I put it down and never returned. There are moments of songwriting beauty, but for the most part this is pretty lifeless. John Cale is sorely missed from this.

There is a surprising number of VU/Lou Reed albums on here. I never was a big fan, mostly just listened to the radio hits, but they are def growing on me.

I was surprised on the first song not to hear Lou Reed’s voice and then the second song dragged out a simple guitar riff and annoying organ chords for the final 2 minutes. In other words, things got off to a bad start. Lou Reed (plus the other vocalists) and the personal lyrics give the songs, especially the ballads like Pale Blue Eyes & Jesus a bare-naked feel. The song that the critics trash (Murder Mystery) is the one I find most interesting, though it sounds so out of place. Lou & Velvet Underground have put out better than this. 5/10, but I'll round upwards because it's a Saturday.

This is a very low key, subtle and melancholic album that needs careful and repeated listening to be appreciated. I can see how Emo and Shoegaze were influenced by the VU so these guys were way ahead of their time.

Expected to like this a lot more, but for some reason just not the biggest fan of the stripped back production. Prefer the banana album and Loaded a lot more than this, but there's still some highs - I'm reading those vocals on After Hours are the drummer??? huh?? Already Saved: Pale Blue Eyes Saved After Listening: Candy Says, After Hours*

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Candy Says, What Goes On Cutting Edge: After Hours Overall Notes: A surprisingly tender and intimate album. Love the way the guitars sound on this thing. You cannot convince me that Murder Mystery is a good song.

cool folky whatever

Nice sound

Not for me. It’s okay. But nah

Really enjoyed this one, felt very shoegaze in some ways. I do think musically it's very repetitive, but then again I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

UN EMBOLE

Highlights but a lot of filler

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would, wil listen to more of theirs.

The songs have a cool sound, clearly ahead of their time, but they are not memorable as a whole when compared to other works.

Decent but ultimately the songs are very similar and nothing stands out

GOOD album. Not my favourite by them.

candy says: singing not great. surprised how soft this. Sounds very '60s. I like the lyrics What Goes On: slightly more interesting. Some Kinda Love: very velvet underground; almost epoken word Pale Blue Eyes: this is nice. Again kike the lyrics more than the music Jesus: yep. Pretty nice. Beginning to See the Light: i liked this one quite a lot I'm Set Free: I liked this one until a quite annoying hank marvin-style guitar solo. That's the Story of My Life - yep. Its nce. The Murder Mystery - experimental and wierd. Not really any fun to listen to. After Hours - nivce. faux naive lyrics

Unsure on this one. I liked it enough for 3/5, but not for much more. Most of the tracks were reasonably relaxing, though not particularly memorable, with the exception of Pale Blue Eyes. Cool hearing Lou Reed's voice from when he was younger, I liked his collab with Gorillaz for Plastic Beach.

Some of this album is “ehhhhh” and some is “hell yeah” I have a feeling this album could really grow on me and in later years I might rate it a 5. I’ve heard Pale Blue Eyes many many many times and didn’t get why people loved it so much. It only recently, within the past year or two, has grown on me. I’m thinking the same for the rest of this album.

Pretty chill. Something comforting about 60s music like this imo. Not got anything particularly to say about this one though other than it was pleasant

Best Tracks: Candy Says, What Goes On, Some Kinda Love, Pale Blue Eyes, Beginning to See the Light, I'm Set Free, That's the Story of My Life

Pretty solid album, very all over the place, great vocal performance though, much prefer The Velvet Underground & Nico

mais ou menos

3.5/5. Some nice chill lo-fi sounding tracks, enjoyed a lot of this. Falls off a bit at the end imo, least fave track the murder mystery.

Fun background music, better than expected. Got a warning for "The Murder Mystery" but didn't know what the fuss was about.. until it got to the end. Big yikers.

Pretty mellow. Smooth guitar. Not a huge fan of the sound of his voice. "The Murder Mystery" had a surprisingly strong start and is super chaotic and interesting compared to the other tracks. Otherwise, not a fan of this, but I can see how people would like it.

Aantal lekkere nummers, sommige te vaag.

Another solid album, but not something I would seek out. Some Kinda Love was the standout track for me, vocals were fine, but really enjoyed the guitar throughout. The Murder Mystery was an adventure and was not ready for the jump. At least it wasnt as unexpected as Frankie Teardrop

I got excited about this album when I realized the first song (Candy Says) was original to the Velvet underground. I’d always thought this was a Blind Melon original. The next track (What Goes On) is pretty good, and I even added to one of my playlists. The rest of the album travels down the Lou Reed rabbit hole - music you might expect to hear in a service elevator on the other side of the Looking Glass. I miss Shannon Hoon.

Liked this, less Rocky than I expected, great chill out album

3.8 - A collection of deceptively upbeat and sing-songy tracks that mostly strike a consistent sunny tone, with the exception of "The Murder Mystery." Underlying the simple chord structures are a meticulous blend of carefully chosen sounds with a keen attention to texture. Listen to the arpeggiated guitar line on "Pale Blue Eyes" and how it interplays with a single tambourine that hits on the 2/4 beats. Tsh...tsh...tsh...

Pop característico del grupo. Voz inconfundible. Estilo tranquilo. No destaca, pero no molesta. No me ha terminado de enganchar.

I didn't know Lou Reed was the lead singer. It's alright - almost like rock folk music. 6/10.

Lou Reed is not my cup of tea

more folky than I thought they were

The velvet underground has always made me feel very anxious when I listen to them. The least track though saved the album.

- Best tracks: Pale Blue Eyes After Hours

all of the songs were very different. pale blue eyes is overrated n the last song was cute. banana n loaded >>>

Interesting, but I can't say it blew me away - worse 3.5

Appreciate their influence. Not my bag.

I’m not mad at it. The album does ooze a little bit of pretension, but, having read the bands origin, I understand why.

Not bad overall, just not my taste preference. After Hours is probably the favorite on this one.

Pale Blue Eyes is a solid song, the rest is pretty okay. Sounds like the Velvet Underground, which is a pleasant sound

Super melancholy. It sounded so much like the Beatles I had to see who came first. It sounded so familiar that it was almost formulaic, so I had to look up why it was impactful. I guess that really shows how influential it is, that everything after it sounds like it. Still not crazy about it.

It's like if the Beatles only played slow songs. Not bad!

velvety!

Kind of boring. Also not sure what was up with that Murder Mystery song.

I get it, you have to know the roots - but the first song was booooooring! The second song is way better! Why do you have to start an album with such a boring tune? The third number is strange, but not in a good way. All in all: I'm too young for this music. And I'm born in 1971.

Kinda boring ngl

I'm not so sure about this one. Every song sounds pretty much the same.

Achingly trendy. Just not worth a lot of time spent. Known for the album cover more than the songs of which only a couple pass muster. A critics band or someone who hates music

Honestly don't really get what all the hype is about

This was ... disappointing. I suppose I appreciate the more tender approach, but it was kind of bland. I'm hammering this on failed expectations given how much I like the other songs I know by them. Miss me with the come to Jesus moments of musicians, I want that hardcore raw sound only drugs, sex, and hedonism can produce

This almost felt too quaint, I just couldn’t get into it.

Some nice easy going tracks to jam to. Not much else. Favorite tracks: Candy Says, Pale Blue Eyes, & After Hours.

Velvet smooth guitars but another album I'm probably not coming back to

Nice in parts, too strange in others

I couldn't get into it. I know it's a formative album, but I really only like the last few songs.

like a bland musical mush that seeped into and then out of my ears

1.8/5 I've heard the name Velvet Underground but I don't think I ever heard any of their music and it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. Sounded a bit like the Beatles and the Doors mixed together but not as great as that would sound like. Very average and I must be out of touch seeing how loved this album is.

One of the more overrated bands I've encountered.

boring

Can’t bring myself to like the velvet underground.

it's just so....boring. Second album I've listened through, and even though it's something I wish I understood, I just don't. They had an underground culture impact but at the end of the day they were just strung out on heroin making droning music. I'm just not the demographic for that

Some good playing, Vu may be big in some peoples opinion buteft me underwhelmed

Levy alkoi ihan hyvin, tykkäsin kahdesta ensimmäisestä biisistä, varsinkin ”What Goes On” oli erinomainen. Sitten meni tasapaksuksi jollotukseksi, eikä levy pitänyt enää otteessaan.

not really my genre, but kinda nice

hmmm. good in the begnning but a little worse towards the end. not my favorite.

Basura

Too slow for me. Jesus was a great song. Murder mystery song I did not like the first listen.

Kjedelig alternativ musikk.

Some good songs and some bad ones (murder mystery is crazy), considering giving it a 3 but honestly will give it a 2

The self-titled third album from The Velvet Underground is the kind of thing that just stares at you wide-eyed as you listen to it, laying there without moving, limp in your ears. It's not putting out the effort to meet you. It's not trying to accomplish a whole lot. It's just laying there. At least up until the last two tracks, *The Murder Mystery* tries to go for a polyphonic cacophony and achieves it without much real meaning or success. It's the final track on the album, *After Hours*, where things actually get a little bit interesting. Clearly one of the inspirations for bands like The Moldy Peaches. It's a little bit lazy, but at least it's trying to do something. My main thought while listening to this album was, "I'm clearly just not high enough."

not my thing! too slow? but i realize i have my preferences in the type of people who are singing it as well...

Liked some of the guitar but a bit too slow for my liking

pale blue eyes and Jesús is good, After hours cool Overall decent, very chill

begint goed, eindigt best meh.

Boring

Demasiado tranquilo, no es mi estilo.

Good enough to listen to in the background, but too many songs stayed for too long. I'm not entirely against long songs as long as I feel like they are either 1. lyrically interesting enough to justify the length and looping instrumentality, or if 2. they develop the instrumental aspects of the song clearly and well. Pale blue eyes did this well, The murder mystery, while I understand what it was attempting to do, the mono tone voice and repetitive instrumental tracks make it hard to follow the story they are trying to do. The nicest thing I can say about this song is that the guitar kinda reminded me of Chop Suey.

Couple of decent moments but overall never got in to it

While iconic, not especailly memorable.

Mid. Singing. Some good ones, but lost within mid. 2/5

Es aburridisimo. Parece álbum de música cristiana.

Another boring album

I don't care how much I'm supposed to like them, I just can't get into these guys. Satellite of Love is all the Lou Reed I need.

I was surprised at how boring this was. I expected so much more from the Underground GOATs. I now see why they were forced under the floorboards

I didn't like it really

Wanky fuckers

pre listening: Velvet Underground!! fuckin uhhh reference to Good Omens for me chief. not sure im famiulaur with music tho... 1: reminds me of the feeling I get listening to Fruits Basket opening idk 4: stood out to me while listening passively 9: discordant in an unfortunately unpleasant way 10: pulled back in to enjoyiment, soft immature and feminine in the way that is awkward and lovely. felt like it really spoke to me.

NGL this album blows. I get it was a different time I get it's unique for its time but bleh. I like the last track on it and the rest range from ok at best to full on unpleasant. 1.5, but I'll give it a 2 for the last track.

Very Indie sounding album and probably unique for 1969. I find it forgettable with no songs really standing out.

I wasnt that keen. It was very maudlin in places and Murder mystery was absolutely atrocious .

druga polovina albuma me dignula i prijala mi dok sam radila, nisam se udubljivala u tekstove ili u dalje lik i delo, ali mi stvara slike u glavi i to je dobar znam, osećam proleće, sedenje napolju, not my cup of tea ali me nije ubilo

Low-key album with a different vibe than other late 60s efforts. Feels a little bit like 1960s shoegaze.

Too slow and not interesting until the Murder Mystery.

(What Goes On, Beginning To See The Light).

Nothing about this made me feel I needed to hear this before I die. Most songs felt familiar in a boring way. Some were just too much like "Jesus" and "The Murder Mystery". I'm not surprised "Candy Says" and "Pale Blue Eyes" stand out with listen count because they were really stand outs on the album for me.

it wasn't bad by no means, it was quite melodic and down to earth it just isn't for me

Meh this was okay. Pale Blue Eyes was the saving grace if I'm honest.

Found this OK, but nothing inspiring.

If the Beatles found Jesus. I like Pale Blue eyes, the rest: meh

I haven’t listened to the velvet underground before. It was fine. No songs particularly grabbed me, although The Murder Mystery was more interesting than the others. The songwriting was solid but I like a more raw or rockier sound (which Lou Reed delivers later). Borderline 3, but wouldn’t listen again, so 2.

I must admit when I saw the name I thought this was a more recent album not a late 60's one. Sort of OK but nothing special. There were a number of places that sounded/were out of tune which gave the impression of a slightly amateur production.

I really don’t get it. They lost me with Heroin or whatever that loud ass song is. I liked the intro, though.

Hits that sitting around a small campfire about to start a drum circle on some drugs kind of energy. Some very experimental sounds, vocals that are buried behind the soft guitar/ piano, meandering melodies and lots of repeated chorus lines. A couple tracks that were okay but lost me in the sauce.

Very average, imo
