Post punk gem. Lots of synths before they became popular

Magazine is a punk, or perhaps post-punk, band - they have punk timing, sound, and energy, but it's a rich, melodic, produced version of punk. They have a much wider range than most punk bands; they add transitions, pop production, and synthesizers to add depth to their material. Real Life is the band's debut. While not particularly commercially successful, it was very well received critically. Magazine's work influenced new wave and alt-rock bands of the 80s.
Here I’m wondering why this rocks so much. Oh former by former vocalist of the buzzcocks.

OK, have to acknowledge the influence these guys had on 80s punk and beyond. Heard of Magazine, mostly referenced by other musicians, although never explored their stuff myself. Not bad. The album rocks, although vocals detract a little bit. Also, found it odd to find out Barry Adamson was in the band. If I ignore my own musical tastes, this is 4 stars

I didn't know this album but it felt very familiar to me, and I did know the main tracks. Really enjoy this period of the post punk development of New Wave. The punks learned to sing and play their instruments and it laid the ground for so much that came after.
80's vibe
Punk Rock albums tend to be Russian roulette: you don't know if you're going to hear a masterpiece or a piece of shit. But today was a pleasant surprise. I've been hearing about Magazine for a long time, but only today I had my first experience. Excellent sound for a 1978 album, good songs, very well performed... perfect album!

There’s a lot to unpack here. I’ve only listened to this album once so I feel like I can’t fairly rate it. There’s a lot of good stuff, again after just one listen I don’t think I’ve taken the time to fully appreciate it. It’s definitely one I’ll have to get back to.

It's nice to discover a band like this that I knew literally nothing about beforehand. Nearly every single 'post punk' album on here I've actively disliked, but this one hits for sure. It's actually cohesive, and the kind of post-punk mania generally works in its favour. I definitely really like the music on here, across the whole album. I like all the different instruments. I like the weird sci-fi synths in particular. I like the energy and drive of the music itself. I'm not a fan of the singing though. Shot By Both Sides is great. Really nice driving rhythms and guitar in there. 3.5 rounded down.
Given how much I have struggled with Buzzcocks, I really wasn't expecing to like this, but ended up thoroughly enjoying it. Musically super interesting and well executed. One to return to...

Fairly forgettable.
Everything I have enjoyed about Roxy Music, Eno, Bowie, and then some. An excellent blend of the experimental and accessible, and yet their doesn't seem to be any clear "hits" to be found making it feel like a weird animal meant to be taken as a whole or in chunks. I love the keyboard/synth work, which gives some heavy prog/fusion vibes and the guitar lead lines are flat out wild. Each song has some twist or serious surprise while looking in the rear view mirror while simultaneously pointing to the future. Such a great discovery.
It's giving post-punk Bowie with a Manchester accent, a little bit. Considering when this came out, it's absolutely a pioneering record. So while I'm impressed with this album to some extent, it didn't move me personally. It could be one that warrants revisiting in the future. I am curious about the rest of Magazine's work; I feel like they could be a good surrogate for The Smiths. Highlights: Shot By Both Sides, Motorcade, The Light Pours Out Of Me
The only problem is that I had to listen to over 600 other albums before I got to this one.
Probably my biggest discovery of this project so far, 150+ albums in. Also gave me a new appreciation of early Midnight Oil (a band I was really into for a good bit, and which is sadly missing from the 1001 albums list).
Post-punk photo-supergroup in pulverising prog-pop blast debut shock. Heard five of these on the best-of compilation I own, which is testament to its strength. The heroic guitars, the synth stepping between futuristic whoosh and a Kraftwerk-adjacent classical European sensibility, and the rousing, declarative vocals of Devoto are an immensely stirring combination. The Light Pours Out Of Me is a permanent member of my get-pumped song stash. I was introduced to this by a dear former boss referencing a single, and being surprised that I did not get the reference. Thanks, Noel! Glad we’re not being shot from both sides any more!
wow, knew the occasional Magazine song (and Barry Adamson's solo stuff) but never got round to an actual album before. Ticks all the boxes while also sounding fresh and surprising. Great stuff, will get into them ASAP
I never wondered what Buzzcocks would sound like without Pete Shelley but now I know.
unbelievably derivative, never left the 80s and wasn't even original then. you'll never be wipers you'll never be pink floyd. the lack of any creativity actually kind of pissed me off

For a short time this sounded alright, I actually thought I might really enjoy this. Then Howard opened his gob and destroyed everything. As I reflected on why I detest the whole punk era so much I decided that it was not so much the music (although a lot of that was utter garbage) but it was the singing that made listening to it such an ordeal. With someone who had any talent for singing this would get 4 stars but with Howard it only gets 1 and that's only because I can't give it 0

Er valt te beargumenteren dat dit wellicht het eerste echte post-punk album is. Een afsplitsing van Buzzcocks, waarin Howard Devoto zijn artistieke ei kwijt kon. Waar de Buzzcocks door zijn intelligente pop songs één van de meest geroemde bands in het punk genre is, is Magazine een blauwdruk geweest voor vele goth en art punk genres. Een beetje te vergelijken met een Joy Division, godfathers van de post-punk, dat door het wrede lot uiteindelijk onder de noemer New Order een heel ander genre zou gaan leiden. Dit album lijkt eigenlijk veel meer inspiratie te halen uit proto-punk en art rock stijlen dan uit de pure punk. Ik kan me zo voorstellen dat er genoeg mensen zijn die Magazine én de Buzzcocks vaak luisteren, maar de innige connectie niet kennen. Een moment op de plaat waar dit verborgen verbond nog te vinden is, is in de song 'Shot By Both Sides'. Deze is co-written by Pete Shelley, de hitmachine van de Buzzcocks. De legendarische riff werd dan ook al eerder bespeeld in het nummer 'Lipstick' van de Buzzcocks. 'Shot By Boths Sides' en mogelijk óók 'Lipstick' zijn m'n favo songs van respectievelijk Magazine en Buzzcocks. Die eerste is wat mij betreft een sterke kandidaat om uit geroepen te worden tot beste song voortkomend uit één van de post-punk genres. De subtiele opbouw naar het extatisch en ietwat paranoïde einde is werelds. Maar dat dit het absolute hoogtepunt is betekent niet dat er ook wat andere songs floreren in zijn schaduw. 'Motorcade' is er zo eentje, die instrumenteel uitblinkt met z'n waanzinnige gitaren en spooky synths/orgels. 'The Light Pours Out Of Me' is ook het benoemen waard, waar dit nummer meer dan andere een duidelijke goth ondertoon heeft, en zonder twijfel het gelijknamige genre heeft aangevoerd. En dan doe ik eigenlijk 'Definitive Gaze' en 'My Tulpa' nog te kort, wat ook puike songs zijn. Het sublieme niveau van 'Shot By Both Sides' werd mondjesmaat aangetikt, waardoor ik het helaas niet meer dan 4 sterren kan geven. Als ik een staart had, zou ik kwispelen. Ik kijk nog altijd uit naar de dag dat ik langs deze hoes kom in een platenbak. En dan zonder exorbitante prijssticker. Meestal als je Real Life in real-life tegenkomt maakt je hart een klein sprongetje, om daarna de moed in je schoenen te voelen zakken. Voor €75 koop ik liever iets anders, maar ooit komt er een dag dat deze mee naar huis gaat. Met Magazine hebben we echt een post-punk plaat te pakken, waar ik bij Pretenders al even aan refereerde. Dit album is rauw, donker, lekker ruig maar heeft een enorm hoog tempo. De stem van Howard Devoto is typisch Brits en soms lekker een beetje vals. Het past echt perfect voor mij bij de rest van de muziek. De muziek is niet heel melodisch en het pakt je niet met hooks en ijzersterke ritmes. Het gitaarwerk (John McGeoch) vind ik sferischer en harmonischer. Ondanks het zwarte randje speelt hij veel majeur, wat de muziek toch positief stemt. Bij Burst gaat de snelheid wat uit de plaat, maar dat is prima. Tegen die tijd hang je allang aan hun lippen en mag de plaat best een tijdje in een lagere versnelling doortouren. 9/10 Highlights Definitive Gaze Shot by Both Sides Burst

Uh, hell yeah, I’m totally into this, but why Magazine? Such a goofy, nothing name. Easy to imagine that a band like this gets lost in the shuffle with a name like that.

This was an interesting listen. They have a very distinct sound, but I found them oddly similar to the Echo And The Bunnymen album from yesterday. Not really my cup of tea, but a neat vibe. Three stars.

Ja, das Album heißt „Real Life“ nich die Band; die heißt „Magazine“ aus Manchester und ist 1978 eine der Quellen aus denen viele Wave Bands z.B. Smith, Visage & Ultravox ihre Inspiration fanden. Man hört wie hier Hardrock und New Wave ineinander übergehen z.B. in „Burst“. E-Gitarren, Synthi-Elemente, Drums prägen das Album. „My Tulpa“ & „Shot by both sides“ sind tolle Wave-Songs. Das Album eignet sich zur Wiederholung.

Considering my general distaste for punk-y things, I wasn’t too excited to listen to this. I am so happy to be doing this project because I loved it and never would have heard it otherwise. Funky in a weird way and so much interesting instrumentation.
After an elongated pause, I am back to the 1001 Albums Journey. This album was typical 70s music which I am simply not interested in. Pass.

Album 355 of 1001 Magazine - Real Life Rating : 3 / 5 Meh. A good solid 3. Wasn't a waste of my time but probably won't think about it again.

Now this is what post-punk is all about! It has the spirit of punk and is based on many of punk's stylistic choices, such as the forward vocal style and minimalist riff and beats, but is chock full of many creative ideas, including genres that haven't even existed yet. New Wave in "My Tulpa", proto-hardcore in "Recoil", Bowie-esque glam in "Burst", gothic in "Motorcade", and what I'd describe as dark cabaret in "The Great Beautician in the Sky". Every track stood out to me. I love the foreboding mood, the atmospheric use of synths and other creative tools (such as the piano in "Parade" or sax in "My Tulpa"), and the innovative stylistic choices. Production is clean, especially for a 1978 punk record. Very consistent, with no tracks out-of-place or feeling like rehashed filler. Track order is well-chosen, with 3 very accessible opening tracks that show their range, and a suitable satisfying closer "Parade" that sums up the experience.
I tried to listen to this a few times. Can't get all the way through it.

never heard of them before. It's interesting... clean catchy riffs. vocal style is very dated at this point so not something I am likely to listen to again. Would be super interesting to hear Dexter Holland from The Offspring sing vocals in a modern remake. Listen to "Shot By Both Sides" and tell me that couldn't be an Offspring song...

loved many instrumental parts upon the first listen, although overall the album sounded a bit unmemorable. on my second listen now though and it's all coming together. as a big fan of post-punk, it's really cool to see some parallels between this album and other music that came out around the time, but it also stands on its own
A waltz on Track 7, ballsy but dare I say they pulled it off. It stands as a microcosm for this whole album of dynamic, inventive post-punk edge. I had never heard of this band before and post-punk is one of my all-time favorite genres! That's what I'm coming here for, glad this album of the day was able to fill in the cracks for me. Looking forward to listening to their whole catalogue!
It's fine I guess
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. It was a pleasant surprise for me. I enjoyed the vocals and instrumentation, and I found the songs to be interesting. I will come back to this and seek out their other albums.
A surprising one. I did not have high hopes when I saw the cover, the year and the genre. The art work is ugly so I was expecting the music to be equally unskilled and unpleasant. But no, they’ve got chops and it kind of drifts around the genres: punk/prog/goth/grunge. First listen I was considering a 5, mainly as a way of book marking it to revisit latter, but no, it’s not that amazing. But then I realised, I don’t really like punk or prog or goth or grunge and while this is much better than I was anticipating, it’s still not anything I’d want to listen to by choice. An interesting discovery though.

Now we're cooking. A masterpiece of post-punk before there was a name for such a thing. Dark, artful, weird, and still catchy as hell. "Shot By Both Sides" will never not get me hyped up.
A post-punk masterpiece. As much as I treasure every post-Devoto Buzzcocks single and LP, what he brought to the group before leaving to form Magazine is truly special. This still has plenty of hooks, but with an angular guitar-led approach that makes it a completely unique album for its time. Essential.

I really dug everything but the vocals on this one. I felt this particularly on the first track on the album where I was really enjoying the punk sounds until it was just ruined by some jarring ass singing which was definitely not appreciated.

One of the reviews for this album said that it's like a soundtrack to Halloween and I completely agree. Not my usual genre, but I did find this hauntingly beautiful.

Slightly before my time, so had never heard of them. After two songs, I was ready to listen no longer, but then the next few songs blew me away, and now I've got to look into this band, as well as Buzzcocks.

No idea. Oh. I remember the principle lick in DEFINITIVE GAZE. I guess you could say this is a precursor of electronic pop. So far, I'd rather be listening to Thomas Dolby (SHE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE; ONE OF OUR SUBMARINES IS MISSING). Right now, song #2, MY TULPA, this is looking at ⭐⭐. The lyric "You can touch yourself any time" makes me want to go play the Tubes' DON'T TOUCH ME THERE. Vocals are punk-ish on SHOT BY BOTH SIDES, with excellent drum and guitar. Seems to have evolved into a more punk-ish album than I initially thought. [So I just learned that this is "post-punk". I liked a lot of the guitar lines in this record. Like a lot. But the rest of it was a little boring. I think this record would be best served blaring from a car's cassette deck.
Interesting new wave music. Joy Division style music alongside straight punk albeit musical. Clash-style unattractive singing. A good stepping stone from Buzzcocks forward.
Post punk is always a hodgepodge for me. After that first initial atomic bomb of an explosion punk was, the bands had to pick up the pieces from what that effect truly was. A lot of bands didn't go for keyboards, but I'm really glad this band did. It really rounded out the sound. "Recoil" was really cool how the sound bounced all around the players, I wish more bands did things like that. A number of songs sounded familiar, like "The Light Pours Out Of Me" used that descending melody which is in "Rock and Roll (Part 2)". A couple of the songs were a bit repetitive, but still worked, and the vocalist is a bit limited. But still, most of it worked for me, especially songs like "Shot By Both Sides" and "Recoil". So it's something I'll come back to for sure.
So this is known to be one of the first post-punk records. I totally get it. The first few songs depart from the typical punk formula, adding in some snyth, pomp, and multi-layered beats. Definitive Gaze has such a cool, new (wave) sound with the keyboards front and center and then My Tulpa and Shot By Both Sides seem to foreshadow all the late 80's and early 90's brit-pop and rock (looking at you Stone Roses, Supergrass, Kaiser Chiefs, and Manic Street Preachers). It feels like punk but not quite the same - again, a fuller sound from the combo of instruments. Recoil was the one song that sounded a little more like straight-ahead punk - there's still more chords going on, but the manic tempo and limited vocals stand out, which is quintessential punk to me. Burst is not the best song on the album but it shows the new direction they were going. Not really new wave, definitely rock, but something unusual about the main riffs combined with stilted drums and slower, haunting vocals. And a longer runtime that ebbs and flows. I think that is part of what became known as post-punk. Motorcade is a bit similar, but also has elements that sound more like punk and the Dead Kennedys. Just a really interesting blending of genres and sounds. But then The Light Pours Out of Me steals the show in my opinion. The opening/main riffs (and vocals) sound a bit like a Stooges song, but the chorus and bridge add in more of that new wave or melodic post-punk sound - just from a bit of keyboard and different chord structure. It's not the greatest album ever made and it has its warts, but it does a lot of cool things that are even cooler given how novel it was at the time.
Boring, forgettable, and cliche. Musically it's not anything that's not been heard a million times and vocally it's poor, with nothing lyrics.

Got a bit distracted and switched off a bit, first impression was ok at first, then a bit weird, then tailed off a bit. Gave it another try with my full attention and I liked it much more, including the weirdness and the second half. Earns its place on the list.

Hadn't heard of the album nor band, I quite liked the melodies and progressions - especially on Shot By Both Sides. Probably not an album I'd listen to again, but enjoyed it enough for its 40 minute runtime.

A kind of kooky bit of punk, post-punk, rock, pop - never heard of this but I had moments of enjoyment.
Some bowie, some b-52s, some 80s punk. Overall pretty decent album. I usually cant listen to this type of music for an entire album but something about the mix of genres helped me get through it. Probably wont be in rotation but I liked a lot of parts.

This is a weird one for me. It's not fitting anything in my frame of reference, and initally I was thinking there were a lot of much more memorable things that came out in 1978 (Elvis Costello, Police, Cars, Van Halen). I'm not a fan of Devoto's voice. It's kind of arty in a quirky talking heads way but then there are bursts of these catchy hooks, but some parts have a gothy feel to it. The sound was starting to grow on me towards the end. I may need to revisit this later and see how I'm feeling about it. Shot By Both Sides and The Light Pours Out of Me are the standout tunes for me.
Sax parts were cool. Not sure if there's anything else of note here, but its fun.
This is a real unique sound, definitely one to hear before I died. I had to give it a few listens, I felt something amazing just around the corner that I just want getting at first. Unfortunately it never happened. This is good, but didn't reach my heart. Thanks though.

My favourite music growing up was an old mixtape of my dad’s containing Visage, Icehouse, and Magazine. This one really showed how context affects my ratings -when trying to listen in the car with the family and lots of noise around I didn’t like it. Listening again at home while I pottered in the kitchen, I thought it was great. Listens: 2 Fave Track: The Light Pours Out Of Me (I’m most familiar with this one) Rating: 4

This had some potential right here. These guys were obviously ahead of the game with their sound. They were on the New Wave train before the 80s even started. The one thing I can't get over on this record is the cheesy synth use throughout. Kinda ruins a lot of the songs and did not age well at all.
Bridge between and or a mish mash of krautrock, 70s punk, some 80s rock, feels like it came at a turning point. Didn't enjoy it much, but interesting to hear.

I really wasn’t feeling this at first, but this is one of the few albums I’ve had so far on this list that actually picks up in the second half. “Shot By Both Sides,” “Motorcade” (the mid-song transition is fantastic), and “The Great Beautician In The Sky” are the standout tracks. Just an okay album overall, but a few really good songs here.

Does Post-Punk just mean the songs are catchy, energetic hooks, are purposely less polished and less abrasive than traditional Punk but still sung with a punk’s sneer? Possibly. If so, Magazine got the memo. But anyone listening in 1978 might still categorize this as Punk Rock—whatever all those genre terms mean. Maybe the keyboards move it closer to New Wave, farther away from Punk, and that’s why it sounds like a gateway to the ‘80s and what’s to come. “Definitive Gaze” and “Shot by Both Sides” are immediate standouts, and the rest is capably done though not a catchy. Never heard them on American radio back in the day, and they probably deserved more attention listening with fresh ears today.
5/10 Too many muso rock albums on this list! But I liked it more than some of the previous ones. Yes, the 70s influences it took were not my favourite - too much noodling and pomposity - but you could definitely hear they knew where the sound was going. I thought this started strong but the second half kinda blurred into one. It also struck me that having listened to it yesterday, I remember basically nothing about it this morning. I remember the first few tracks being quite good but not even sure why.
#100. This is like off brand music. This for people who played with mega blocks instead of Legos and ate King Vitamin instead of Captain Crunch. yeah, honestly i really liked listening to this! definitely an album that's ahead of its time, being released in the 1970s but having a sound that's commonly associated with 1980s alt rock, trippy synths, drums reverberated to hell, and voices so crackly and gothic you can picture their pure black eyeshadow and lipstick. i am flat out embracing this vibe. it is a part of me.

I'm rounding up a little bit by Shot by Both Sides is excellent and tracks like The Light Pours Out of Me, Motorcade and Definitive Gaze are enough to keep the album interesting. There's definitely enough here with an early raw rock/punk style, that keeps it entertaining.

This is a very unique album. I would not say this would be popular in the mainstream. However, this would be a good gaming opportunity if you’re just lounging in your room or doing art.
Superb - a classic!
Every third album is a random British 80s post punk/pub band. And this is no better than any of the rest.
I feel like if I did a deep dive on this album it would get a higher score, but just on the surface, I really wasn't that into it. Nothing against the musicality of the group, just didn't really do it for me.
To be honest, I liked the vibe here but I could not keep my ears on it. It seems a lot like something I'd like and I'm down with that album cover, but it never got it's hooks into me.
Plucky little album, isn't it? I've heard "Shot by Both Sides" before and I can't tell you where. My guess is that it's in a movie. At any rate, that song is indicative of the others in that I frequently love the music here, but don't as frequently love the vocals. (That's the trend of the week, it seems.) That said, this cover of "Goldfinger" is the shit. Worth a star on its own.

An incredible ride of alien-like synth, carnival-esque beliefs, and a downright whimsical yet oppressive nature to the whole album leads to an experience not found on many other big names in the post-punk genre. Its seemingly needless drive to weird out the listener than pull them in with the catchiest of hooks and breakdowns is fantastic, and its only when that purely punk side starts to shine do I lose interest ever so slightly, however that same heavy punk influence from the time in The Buzzcocks leads to an experience that feels sharper than its more dreary contemporaries, and I admire it all the more for it.
Another obscure English album. Between new wave and post-punk, Magazine is yet another group which failed to cross the ocean out of England. Overall, their sound is more palatable than the previous album.

This was fine. A lot of bands have done this type of album, and nothing on this really stood out to me. I don't mind it, but I also didn't find anything that I would be clamoring to return to.
Definitely a fun and punchy post punk/new wave record. I had never heard of this band, though there was definitely a vague familiarity to them. Certainly probably a likely far reaching influence I was just not aware of. Good listen for sure.

Right. Now THAT is post-punk or even new wave realness that I’ve never actually heard before. And the more I hear it, the more I want to listen again. Jesus, the royal lineage on this disc: post-Buzzcocks, pre-Siouxsie. Just fits right in there between punk and goth so perfectly.

Initial listen: I liked it, but wasn’t blown away. In fact, on Motorcade, I was almost distracted by how it sounded like Midnight Oil (who I feel are glaringly omitted on this list). But taking into consideration the year of its release and the artists Magazine influenced—including Radiohead and The Smiths—I started to listen to the album with different ears. In fact, it predates “London Calling,” “10-1,” and “Drums and Wires.” A lot of the sounds that initially seemed derivative were actually quite the opposite: they were foundational! And given that it was founded by Howard Devoto of seminal punk group Buzzcocks, it seems quite likely that this album is responsible for Post-Punk existing at all! I gave the album a second listen, and it’s actually so well done—interesting melodic ideas, some polytonal guitar solos, creative instrumentation choices.

I had never heard this before. It was extremely my jam. I loved it.
Sounds so fresh, full of intricate sounds. No shy and retiring album here - grabs your attention and keeps it with driving guitar lines and smashing drums. Four stars on first listen but can see this headed for five.
Influential, and somehow sounds like post-punk despite being very much mid-punk, but just doesn't grab me the way the best similar records do. The one song that did (last bonus track on the Spotify linked version) is another in the grand tradition of odd-as-hell cover songs - a recurring theme of this list! Very very good, and important, and probably a major leap forward at the time, but falls just short of its fifth star in my view.
One of my favourite albums all times - postpunk does not get any better than this.
This is pretty good for what it is, but it is not really a style that appeals to me very much, and especially the expressive but ugly vocals put me off.

I tried but it really wasn't my thing.
I'm giving it 3 stars, but it's more like 2.5 for me. There's nothing to hum coming away from this, and there's only so much plinky synth I can handle.
Fun punkish listen, enjoyed more than expected
I do not know Magazine, so I was excited to throw on some unfamiliar music. Hooked right from the get go - even the cheesy synths on the title track. Looked into the album and artist, and lo and behold - this band is the brainchild of Buzzcocks founding member Howard Devoto. I love The Buzzcocks, but Devoto likely made little impact on the catalogue of theirs that I’m familiar with, having left the band before their first full length album dropped in 1978. Still, you can hear the connective tissue between both bands here. I used to write off “80s music” as disposable and goofy. But I’ve revised that position significantly after listening to new wave music that is clearly an outgrowth of the punk rock of the 70s that I love. Now late 70s and 80s alternative ranks among my favorite genres and eras. Genuinely enjoyed this album and am looking forward to moving more Magazine into my regular listening alongside Wire and Gang of Four.

It was decent. I liked the style overall, but some of the synth sounds put me off, as did the singers delivery. When I try to think of other bands in this genre, The Quick comes to mind. I know they are more punk than this, but I just find them way more charming.

Grabs you early and doesn't let go. If you were to ask me what year this album was released, I'd probably need ten guesses before I said "1978” and only then through process of elimination. I've never heard anything of this band, let alone this album, which surprises me because it's pretty great. It turns out Duff from Guns 'N Roses and Morrissey are big fans.

Never mind the Buzzcocks, here's another post-punk, new wave, arty power rock band... This surprisingly hit me just right.
Made no impact on me at all. Possibly the least compelling work of the punk/new wave/post punk movement that I've been exposed to. I forgot to write a review and could scarcely remember having listened by the time I got to it.
Howard's debut album still has a catch today. Some classic punk anthems here

I really wanted to like this more than I did. With John Leckie producing and John McGeoch on guitar who influenced the likes of Jonny Greenwood, Ed O’Brien, John Frusciante and Robert Smith. It left me a bit cold though. Genuinely disappointed
What a delightful album. Glad I discovered this so far in my life. The new wave, rock & post-punk started here it feels. Some songs come straight from the punk (Shot By Both Sides, Recoil) and others are proto new wave. Getting better with every listen. Update after full listen 3: Also great lyrics
Had to execute a lot of self control to sit through this one, especially since I discovered Katie Herzig the same day and wanted to keep listening through her catalogue. I guess it's technically good, but I can't say I enjoyed listening to it and I couldn't see myself doing so again. I just don't enjoy punk. At all. I think it's the vocals. Favourite track: Shot By Both Sides, by a wide margin. The lyrics were really good and make you think. A shout out to the line "The conspiracy of silence ought/ To revolutionise my thought" (The Light Pours Out Of Me). This is an amazing line. However, the delivery just didn't cut it.

I love Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady and am a huge fan of Wire, but this one didn't really click until the third listen (previous listens were years ago). I only remember liking Definitive Gaze before but really enjoyed the whole thing this time, even the bonus tracks.
I guess that this would have been influential but really it’s just a bit diluted - a sound that has been taken to much more impressive extremes

I love this kind of "out there" post-punk so much. And this is one of the best from the bunch. And with members of bands such varied as PIL, Buzzcocks, Chameleons (on that album at least) and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, I'd say this is one of the most exciting lineup in the history of rock.
Post-punk doesn't get better than this
Now that's GREAT post-punk/new wave! All of this with a subtle glimpse of prog rock. Unique stuff!
I've never heard of Magazine before, but this album was fantastic. The instrumentation was kooky and strange, and while it reminded me of Siouxsie and The Banshees, it was still distinctly unique in its sound. I can definitely see how this album is seen as the first in the post punk genre, but I loved how there were still some elements of punk music present, especially the 'sneering vocals' that were present on a few songs. I loved the guitar playing, and the keyboards were fantastic as well. This is an album that will definitely make its way into my regular rotation.

4/5. A weird and interesting "rock" album with saxophones, synthesizers, and other random sounds. Goes hard during times I don't expect it with piano and drums or just the vocals while everything else is chill. There is a creepy and nervous vibe around the whole album. I really do enjoy it though.
Listening to this, one can surmise that the '80s started in 1978. Lots of good fun – chiming guitars on "Definitive Gaze;" mood + tone on "Motorcade" and "Light Pours Out of Me;" chorus (plus song title) on "Great Beautician in the Sky" – plus a clear sense of originality, having a plan and executing it pretty damn effectively. One hears so much of so much good that was just about to come. The closer is arty (the sax pretty effective – more '80s New Wave foreshadowing) but clunky, the risk of overreaching, one fears.

I couldn't even really tell you what I just listened to, and I mean that in a good way. I think it sounds cool for the time, and it felt super long, but not really in a bad way. Sometimes the vocals were really good, and I loved those moments and wished they happened more frequently. Regardless, the vocals fit the music well. I think it needs a relisten for me to fully comprehend it, so hopefully I'll come back to it sooner rather than later. My favourite song was The Great Beautician In The Sky.

I liked this pretty well, appreciated the wierdness and the bridge to much new wave and alt-rock. Fair dose of that British alternative male vocalist thing, a little of which goes a long way for me.
Really interesting and very English sound. I like it because it seems like the proper evolution of punk. More settled more melodious, but full of plenty of surprises and defined drums. Vocals are just classic British punk, raw and emotive.
Yeah, I get it Buzzcocks wise up and try and make something a little more cerebral and buttoned up. Change is hard because nobody is ever ready for it. There's some stuff on here, like My Tulpa that is terrible, but some really interesting stuff in Burst and Recoil. (I dig Recoil., makes me think of Beastie Boys Some Old Bullshit tracks). This is respectably solid album... though the tracks that I like the best is from the sound that has changed the least...

I thought at first this album would be quite bad, the first few songs really weren't good but once you get to Burst and Motorcade it picks up a little and those are good songs. It's a very unique sounding album I suppose for better and for worse but I thought Shot by both Sides was really strong. Give it a listen why not.
