Reviews (page 6 of 7)

I can tell it was a pioneer in the post punk world.

Didn't like

Uusi tuttavuus itselleni. Bändin soittajat ovat varsin tunnettuja nimiä ainakin uransa myöhemmiltä vaiheilta, joten odotukset oli korkeat. Vähän liian kikkailua tämä kuitenkin on omaan makuuni, vaikka äänimaailma sinänsä on ihan potentiaalinen. Laulajan ääni ärsyttää hieman liikaa. Positiivisena biisinä mieleen jäi erityisesti Shot by Both Sides. Tällaista rempseätä rokkia olisi kuunnellut mielellään enemmänkin.

Weird album but I kind of dig it

Very nice!

good punk rock album. would listen again.

Enjoyed this album, but I couldn't listen to it all day, that would be to much

Wonderful mix of genres, especially those important to British post-punk as I understand it. Leans to the new-wave side as opposed to the skronky, but contains plenty of sax. The arcs of individual songs and the entire album are both satisfying, and there's a lot of interesting composition.

1978. Key Songs: Definitive Gaze, Shot By Both Sides

It was fine, nothing stuck out to me.

the Wikipedia link is not correct, it brings you to The Real Life by Bread of Stone

I thought I might like this, 1978 was my prime year, however it didn’t hit that level I was expecting…

Had a few interesting twist and turns which saved me from rating it with the lowest score, but ultimately forgettable. Feels like this album was put in just because one of the people making up the list enjoyed this record as a teenager, not because it's actually one of top thousand albums you need to listen to before you die.

Post Punk done with Progressive Rock. 2.5

This _almost_ hits for me. Every song starts out promising, but then nothing happens. Probably not my genre since there is something here, but it still leaves me cold.

There is so much punk music on this list. I didn’t hate it. It was kind of boring though. I quit listening halfway thru.

This was not enjoyable to me. While I didn’t hate the music overall, I really hated the vocals. It really ruined it for me. 2/5

56/100 it was alright, just didn’t really land with me

1.6/5 This was a hard listen for me. I could barely tell where one song finished and the next one started as the sound all sort of blended into one. It had some good moments but ultimately it wasn't fun to listen to.

First time hearing this album. The music is really good but the vocals are that kind of punk style that I'm not a huge fan of. It's not terrible and definitely unique but probably not something that I would listen to again any time soon.

de repente se siente sin ganas

Standouts Shot by Both Sides

While I’ve certainly heard of The Buzzcocks, and I’m pretty sure I’d heard the name Howard Devoto, I don’t think I’d ever heard of Magazine before today. I wanted this to be more interesting than it was.

This just washed over me. I wasn't completely paying attention but nothing grabbed me and when I listened it mostly bored me.

I'm a big post-punker and I wasn't familiar with Magazine at all. But it got slightly boring the more I listened to the album. It starts great, you can notice the Buzzcocks influence at the beggining, there's even a couple of Pete Shelly credits in the album, but in the end it wasn't as memorable for repeat listens, just an ok album.

I liked it, but it wasn't really my cup of tea. It was ok though.

Interesting “punk” album with a rather eclectic sound, great production value, some fairly good musicianship at times, typical talking vocal stylings for the genre, and some of the worst saxophone playing ever to be recorded. A fun listen overall, but I would not consider this to be one of my personal 1001 albums to hear before you die.

Yuck. Except the last track. 2

I barely even know what to write about the albums that I enjoyed. Some more 70's bullshit.

Most "whatever" album in a long time

constantly swinging between "oh this is kind of interesting" and "urgh this is getting on my nerves" while listening to this. overall not a great experience

mmmmmmmmh bon on s'ennuie un peu

If I could score the music 4 and the vocals 0 I would.

For 1978 this is a very early representation of post-punk. But this is not the band that would make me fall in love with the genre. Television, Joy Division, Wire and Gang Of Four for example are to me 100 times more compelling. This album is kind of forgettable and uninteresting.

Truly nothing special to my ears. Would be a one star but I liked The Light Pours Out Of Me and I could finish the whole album without too much pain

Some good music but forgettable lyrics, no standouts

well def not going to touch myself to this album but ok

Feels like a slightly below average punk record.

Brit Punk meets Doors.

This album has carnival vibes. I don't know on this one. I gave it two listens and thought it sounded fine but nothing at all stuck. Maybe it was me and the day on it but it made no impression.

Never heard of this band before. A few good songs on there but some real stinkers too.

I love weirdo noise like that. Nothing stood out as standouts, but would be a fun getting ready album ⭐️⭐️/5 Highlights: "The Great Beautician in the Sky" "Motorcade"

Heard a song from it before. Second boring post punk album in a row, come on 2/5

Wasn’t too bad. Thought it’d be awful based on the album cover and reviews. But there’s some groove and melodies here that made my ears perk up a lot. 2.75/5

Bleurrrgh this album is a chore to listen to. There are strong elements. Musically it's obviously strong, the guitar work in particular is great at points, and I'm sure old school punk fans absolutely love it. But it's just not for me at all. It's too raw and the vocals are just too moany & dreary. It's not a terrible listen by any means but I won't be coming back for more.

I feel like we've heard 10 albums that sound like this

Sounded like crazy circus music. Not for me.

This is a terribly written review, but I ran it through a Korg synthesizer so that makes it better, right?

Sounds like the soundtrack to a bad video game. Not for me.

Not the greatest.

This is the type of album I need to spend more time with. As it is, I am not a fan

Didn’t care for this sound.

Not a punk fan. The music seems rushed

Did not enjoy this at all. However, there have been worse albums.

Magere 2

Okay. Interesting.

Listened in the car while driving around. Pretty standard British post punk, alt rock record. Found myself liking it less as it went on. Started strong but got more boring and forgettable by the end. Not my favourite.

Like the sound but not the vocals

A band I have never heard of before, so reading the description I saw English rock band, and just sighed. I already knew what the experience was going to be, and it was just as middling and uninteresting as expected.

This is clearly well made and you can hear the precision in it but it never really pulled me in. The jagged guitars are the strongest part for me but Devoto’s vocals just didn’t connect. It’s cohesive in sound, but not in meaning as I felt it never builds toward a bigger emotional payoff or leaves you with a defining feeling. Motorcade is the one that stuck however, I did like that one. Overall it was okay and completely listenable, but not something I’m actively looking to return to.

No. 104 I get their style, but not my thing

Okay new wave album that has some very good highs but is very uneven. Tries to thread a delicate balance of art rock that just comes off as silly/clunky more often than not. Peaks early and never really manages to recapture that sound. A few standout songs but not much else to revisit. Top tracks: Definitive Gaze, Motorcade

1 good song the rest was creepy and trash

70s British glam rock, didn't like the lead singer and didn't make much of an impression on me.

Ok. I get their style, but not my thing

I’m just not a fan of this kind of music. I’m getting tired of the repetitive album genre’s being listed. It feels like we get a non punk album every three or four days and then it’s back to this.

Album wasn’t terrible just felt run of the mill. I’ve heard this album a thousand times on this list before and it was done way better

It was ok, but not really my thing

This was really close to a 3 for me, but just missed because of the art-house inspired songs that I didn't really dig. I like the Buzzcocks better, but there are some good songs on this album that are mostly buried in the last bit of the album. Shot by Both Sides is easily the best song on the album.

Trop punk pour moi

Started strong, if a little weird, but it got too punky for my tastes. A lot of timeless shouting over noisy instruments

Never mind the Magazine.

cover is better than the music

Idk, I didn't connect with this one at all

Couple songs I enjoyed! Really liked the first few off the album

Debated between 1 and 2 stars, really didn't enjoy or feel inspired by almost any track

"Guys! Guys! I got a synthesizer!" "What does it sound like?" /eyes wide, looking wildly about "Like the FUTURE" "Radical! What should we do with it?" "Well, you know how we all agree that The Doors are the best and deepest and coolest band ever?" /others in unison "Yes." "What if we made a record that was trying to sound like them, but, like, more circus-y." /unison "Yes!" "But every now and then I wanna put some up-tempo kickass guitar riffs in there to make it just barely tolerable." /unison "Awwwwww..." "But don't worry, we'll layer the guitar with way more effects than necessary, and the whole thing will still be tedious and faux deep." /unison "Fiiiiiiine."

It's been a rough run lately, very few over 2 stars.

Post-Punk New-Wave Art-Rock. The genre Art-Rock usually indicates that the band are a bunch of pretentious students and they have to be good to pull it off, for example Roxy Music (who, apparently, were one of the influences for this band). I'm not convinced that they manage to pull it off, but it's not a complete disaster. For me, the best track on the album was "The Light Pours Out of Me".

Good sound, I can hear a lot of influences on more modern bands. But not my cup of tea personally and not taking anything to the hit list.

*1978. English post-punk. *Sounds very The Clash and like it could be in the sequels of a horror/halloween film franchise. *Fun to listen to in small doses. RATING - 5.5/10

The pink attitude voice was perfected two decades before this.

mikäs näissä brittirokkenrolli bändeissä on? Ihan kuunneltavaa tämäkin meininki.

Fine. But a little lacking in personality

M’oui… c’est sympa, j’oublierai

I had never heard of Magazine before. After listening to this album, I think I would’ve been fine never having heard them. I didn’t hate the album, but I didn’t connect with it at all. I found some of the instrumentation and rhythms enjoyable, but I didn’t like the vocals. For the diverse sounds the album offers, I found it to be quite boring overall. Thankfully, it’s only 42 minutes. Definitely won’t revisit this one.

My Spotify premium finished today, so it was difficult to listen to the whole album in one go... But even then I wasn't too impressed.

what a collection of songs placed together to make an album. Kool. I wish other such talented folk could do so! ]I guess I am just not feeling it[

I feel like this music would be cool in an old turn base rpg during boss fights. Thats about it.

The instrumentals were good! The rest was pretty generic brit-rock

I normally quite like the sort of post-punk-moving-towards-new-wave type of music, but this just didn’t do it for me at all. It was totally forgettable almost as soon as I had finished it.

This was a very confusing listening experience. Definitive Gaze for some reason made me think it should have been used for the theme tune for a Tomorrow's World rival in the early 80's. My Tulpa was ska-ish. Burst was sort of Rocky Horror but rubbish. There was a lot of this album that, on paper, meant I should have really enjoyed it. Dear reader, I did not really enjoy it. The Goldfinger cover from the bonus tracks sealed its fate. 2/5

I wasn't quite sure how to categorize this album. This album has been categorized as "new wave", "post-punk", and "art rock", and while it does have elements of all of these, it doesn't fit neatly into any of these genres. That said, it also didn't really scratch the "itch" for me in any of these genres, either. I will say: "The Great Beautician in the Sky", as a song title, does really amuse me for some reason. And was it just me, or did the album get zanier as it went on? That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, as I was a little bored with it. This was not bad, but it didn't really wow me or impress me. It's probably about a 2.5 for me, but I'm not inspired enough to round it up.

The guy cant sing.

I didn't like this. I didn't think it was terrible, I just didn't vibe with it

This did absolutely nothing for me

I tried, but I just couldn’t get into this one.

It's a big step up from Germs, but the new wave that I like is more of the synthesized-sound of Talking Heads, Duran Duran, Blondie, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, and Tears for Fears. This is still too punky for my liking. Tangentially, I got a big kick out of the names of Magazine's other albums: The Correct Use of Soap; Secondhand Daylight; Magic, Murder and the Weather; and No Thyself.

This started ok, but the it begins to grate after about halfway through. I'm with Jon, maybe all this punk isn't for me

I couldn’t get past third track. I really wanted to like it after a strong beginning but it just felt blah to me.

im glad we're in a post post punk world

Not very engaged, had to stop it midway of a walk

I find it difficult to listen to due to it's lack of hooks and melody but it is full of soundscapes and deep, rich textures. Reminds me of The Fall, PiL, Joy Division and the like. Challenging and not really my wheelhouse but I "get" it.

Seeing so many positive reviews for this and wondering what I’m missing. Oh well

Nah, dont like

Meh. This wasn't anything special.

Perhaps this represented something groundbreaking in its day, but except for one or two gems, most of it sounds fairly pedestrian to today’s ears.

Nothing original here. A rehash of their stuff from fifty years ago with nothing new to say. Tried to listen to the whole record but didn’t make it

Close between 2/3 - didn’t dislike it but was a struggle to keep going. Probably deserves more listens but that’s the nature of this game

A lot of post punk in this list and it’s just not my bag

Takie se. Dwie piosenki do zapisania, ale większość do zapomnienia. Podobne płaskie piosenki. 2/5

With a better singer, this could have been decent. As it stands, it’s just generic rock with a terrible voice.

At the beginning of the first track, I was pumped. The instrumentation slapped. But then the voice, that horrible, horrible voice. With a decent vocalist, this would have been an easy 4-stars; possibly 5-star-worthy.

It's very experimental in a way I really don't enjoy.

I think I’d like this more if it was more…anthemic. It’s just a mold of a numerous, very similar Brit rock bands. It’s sounds like it’s from the 70’s yet it also is similar to the Hives. Meh, nothing special here

I want to like this but the lazy vocals and out of key guitar solos (and synths on occasion) really kill this. Good vibe with ok songs but lazy execution.

Post punk crap

Sparse post punk, didn't do much for me.

Gothic circus punk that sounds really good, but eventually started to annoy me with the lack of memorable melodies, hooks, lyrics, or anything about the songwriting that suck with me

I liked a couple of the early songs, but I can't get past the singing choice. I just don't like the sound.

It was ok? I guess? I don’t know, it didn’t really keep my interest so it couldn’t have been that good.

meh 2/5

Not my taste.

Yawn. Couldn't finish. Maybe it would have gotten 3 stars if it didn't come right after some awful industrial metal - I can't do wacky vocals. So annoying, just sing normal!!! - On a short leash after the last album (industrial metal). They're gonna have to cut the wacky stuff if they want me to finish this album. - Maybe it's pioneering but I don't hear it. Just sounds like more of the same rock music I've been hearing

Some interesting songs but not enough to make me want to hear more. 2 stars or D+.

This one lost me early. Not sure what they were trying to be and I have my doubts that the knew themselves.

Post-punk, ok. New wave, not so much. Maybe a bit artsy, but I honestly can't understand the hype.

FAVO: Definitive Gaze,

Unfortunately, nothing of real interest on this album. Didn’t do anything for me. Didn’t keep it in the library.

this was fun on the tracks that didn't sound like circus music

Well now this is a bit strange, can remember listening to this yesterday, but cannot remember what it was like at all. Not a good sign. So listened to snippets from several songs, now I'm going to listen to the whole thing again. Let you know what I think later. Was expecting to be awarding a high 3 from the above. And indeed there is a lot to like, but there is just as much not to like, unfortunately. The final track was far and away the best on the album. But in order to keep consistent with other scores I can only give it a 2. But a part of me feels it is just (and only just) worth a 3.

Nothing at all exciting here. Was ok.

There are two absolute stone cold classics on this album;' Shot By Both Sides' and 'The Light Pours Out of Me'. Most of the rest is a bit wild with the keyboards in places for my taste. That's probably why I only listen to those two tracks when I'm in a post punk mood. It's a 2.5 star effort for just those two songs.

Not interested.

Pretty bland punk, not exactly exciting. Didn't find any interesting songs in here, and since it's punk it was a bit hard to stomach.

Its biggest crime is it was very boring. Nothing caught my attention.

An inoffensive listen but all very samey. Gave up after Recoil so actually not as bearable as I thought.

I didn't get much from this, a lot of similar sounding stuff in the list

I tried, but the vocals on this were just so bad.

I feel a bit harsh on this one. It sounded fine. I've never heard of them. the listening didn't grab me enough to find out more. It's a classic 2.5 rounded down.

I might give it a three, but that’s the stars for albums I don’t mind listening to if they pop up randomly.

Best Song: Shot by Both Sides. There was a driving, punkish energy to this one that was fun. Worst Song: Parade. Ahh, the classic 80s British maneuver: a man talking in a vaguely musical way. Overall: Largely clunky and forgettable British post-punk. Not as offensively dull as most of its cohort, but also not particularly interesting.

I didn't really remember anything about it right after finishing listening to it

British punk/rock. 2/5. Not my style.

It's okay I guess.

Pitävätkö he sirkuksesta vai vihaavatko he sitä? Vaikea sanoa. Uskotko?

Average punk with a SYNTHESIZER?? Woah no way!!! Is this post punk?? :O :O It's not great punk, not great post punk, and painfully British. Not bad, but whatever.

some songs were ok but did not enjoy the voice or overall vibe

The longer this album went on, the more I started to despise it. The singer's vocals are the worst part. The actual instrumentals are not bad, but I can't get past the dude belting out lyrics sounding like a drunk guy at karaoke.

Started off okay, but ended up sounding more and more like a drunken session at a karaoke bar.

Listening to this brings me back to the time I went to an underground experimental film festival-it makes me want to relapse. I can tell the drummer is talented, the guitarist shreds, and the singer has showed up to rehearsal. That doesn’t mean I enjoyed it though.

All of the songs on this album fits into one of two categories: 1) I think the demographic for this might be goth surfers 2)This just sounds like someone singing over the cocoto racing cart background music (2005 Wii game) You may think I’m forgetting about the song with the circus beat, but there was a circus race in cocoto

Pretty cool. Not what I'm into these days, but I was glad to get acquainted with Magazine.

Starts promising, ends boring. 2/5

Found it pretty boring actually

I couldn’t say it was bad but I also didn’t enjoy it

Bah. Un rollo.

2. An unabashed slog, and I didn't even stick around for the last one.

this was ok, but I wouldn't say any particular track really inspired me. Wouldn't listen to again I don't think

This was fine, nothing particularly special in mind.

Ahh Barry Adamson, our old friend. Simpsons: No

It's post punk so I'm more inclined to like it, but it's still punk.

M’eh

Postpunk, halvskidt vokal, ikke rigtig fængende

Another overrated British blah meh blah album.

Ah, this is the original of Parade - I knew it first from my all-time favorite Nouvelle Vague, 3rd album simply titled 3. But otherwise, it is basic UK new-age music.

I’d rather listen to fisher Z, xtc or the boomtown rats. The Irish radiators, j Jo zep and the falcons, or a thousand other bands. This is ok. But not great.

Correcto

I guess there’s a reason they’re left off the list of bands that sound like this? Btw, that sound is exactly what you think would be, judging just on the band name and cover art. (ntm.)

A lot going on here. Almost too much. I wouldn't really call it bad, just not important. And that's like the whole point.

Interesting listen primarily because the singer from the Buzzcocks left and went onto for this band. So you’re getting a godfather of pop-punk moving on to be a godfather of post-punk/ new wave. There were moments of genuine creativity surrounded by stretches of basic punk songs that makes the listener think “this sounds familiar”, but not necessarily in a good way. Not a big fan.

Seemed ahead if its time. Can see how it may have been influential. I wasn't moved.

This is okay but not really my jam.

Best tracks were Shot By Both Sides and Burst. Not a bad album at all, weakest track was the final track, Parade. Happy to appreciate it as a good album but completely not for me. 5/10.

🎧Interesting but kind of aimless sounding post-punk album. I may spend more time with it. Songs drag on a bit. Favorite track: The Light Pours Out Of Me

Weird and british

p407. 1978. 2 stars. Limp post punk, saved from one star by "Shot By Both Sides".

I don't know, man. Relevant for being first in something maybe?

The singer from the Buzzcocks left the band and somehow found a way to make even crappier music. There is no real sustenance or creativity in any of these songs, save maybe, MAYBE, for 'Recoil'. His voice is borderline unbearable, the guitar riffs are beyond generic, and the lyrics are incredibly bland. If annoying had a sound, it would sound like this. It's not even cool in the way crappy post-punk can sound. It's unintelligible meandering.

There were some stuff there that I vibed to. Most of it was pure shite. Oh and my message to the person who came with the idea of adding that piece to song 11 at 1:25: You are untalented, lame, unfunny, dumb, uncreative, edgy wannabe, shite of an artist, and probably a cunt, and you should be ashamed of yourself for turning a semi-ok song to a shite song. (Yo if you're actually reading this, I don't mean this shit, just bantering! While I maintain my opinion that that piece was shite, I'm sure you are very talented! Love your work!)

Ahah another weird one

Shot by Both Sides The Light Pours Out of Me

This album reminds me of the song the punk listens to on the bus in Star Trek IV Voyage Home. I don't hate it.

This kind of punk just does nothing for me.

most songs were 5 minutes long and i didn’t really care for the whole thing that much, it sounded decent and was okay overall but i found it a chore to listen to it and think there’s better albums to be on this list overall

OK, I listened once. While it did seem that there was something going on musically at times, I just couldn't find it in myself to tolerate the melodies and vocals. To tip it all off, the "cover" of "Goldfinger" was completely unnecessary. I need to listen to the proper and only version by Shirley Bassey ASAP!

could i write poetry to this? n

Not the most interesting album

This felt very average. Good not bad. I’d be fine if this was on in the background.

Not for me

To be fair, I had it on in the background while I was working. But nothing caught my attention enough to replay any of it / turn it up more

It was ok

Was aware of Magazine in post punk period but what I heard never interested me. Gave this a listen. Still no interest. 2/5 13/7/24

Never heard of them before. Sound like a club band.

Bah. Un rollo.

Remarkably unremarkable. I just listened in the last 24 hours and can't even recall much about it. 2/5

I kept thinking “I should like this album” but I never did. It seems adjacent to some of my new wave favorites but it just didn’t grab me.

Post-punk, new wave, art rock.

Sigh, I don't know. Sounds like Bowie or Eno's music from the same era. Forgettable. I was waiting it for it to end, so it's just background music. It's music that someone else is very excited about and plays it through the aux, but you can't wait for it to end. I sound harsh, but I do generally like this kind of music from this era. I would give it a 1.5, but since I can't pick decimals here, then I'm in favor of going higher, because it is cool for its time and I would always rather be defensive of releases like this as opposed to corporate arena music of any era. 2/5.

bowie-ish, but too much dissonance

New band to me. Strong guitars and interesting and cool sound that is often spoiled by the lead singer’s poor and whiny vocals.

Just wasn't something I was into. The punkier stuff was good, but I was bored by the rest. 2/5

The Clash featuring The Sex Pistols?

that standard 70s sound

Weird but some interesting riffs

80's vibe

Mediocre post-punk/rock of the 70s not worth much time

Real Life isn’t deserving of a place in this prestigious list. I didn’t find anything appealing about Magazine at all. Next.

Started to kinda like it, then started to not like it. Their sound starts to get old after a bit.

Fairly forgettable.

unbelievably derivative, never left the 80s and wasn't even original then. you'll never be wipers you'll never be pink floyd. the lack of any creativity actually kind of pissed me off

Not a terrible listen, but nothing special. Sounds a bit like a knockoff version of the Clash

8/10 Highlights: Shot By Both Sides Motorcade The Light Pours Out Of Me

I'm not a big fan of punk I guess

Album is ok, don’t understand the relevance, seems to be another band from the UK I’ve never heard of

Did not like this one at all. Still, it was better than anything by Radiohead or Kanye.

Nah, every song is the same, tired of beach punk angst

More Punk than Rock

Did not like this band! 2 stars

It's fine I guess

Wouldn’t turn it off if it came on, but wouldn’t seek it out either.

I found myself waiting for this one to be over.

Was ok, instantly forgetable.

Not quite punk, not quite rock. There's a reason I'd not heard of this band. Not that great, sorry.

Some bowie, some b-52s, some 80s punk. Overall pretty decent album. I usually cant listen to this type of music for an entire album but something about the mix of genres helped me get through it. Probably wont be in rotation but I liked a lot of parts.

Sax parts were cool. Not sure if there's anything else of note here, but its fun.

Beetje hysterisch

Didn't push the right buttons for me. 2.5 stars.

Did not care for this

Nope. No thanks.

This had some potential right here. These guys were obviously ahead of the game with their sound. They were on the New Wave train before the 80s even started. The one thing I can't get over on this record is the cheesy synth use throughout. Kinda ruins a lot of the songs and did not age well at all.

Ingen sanger treffer spesielt hardt. Fordi punken er svak. De skulle fortsatt å være sinna.

I thought this started strong but the second half kinda blurred into one. It also struck me that having listened to it yesterday, I remember basically nothing about it this morning. I remember the first few tracks being quite good but not even sure why.

Every third album is a random British 80s post punk/pub band. And this is no better than any of the rest.

Bah. Un rollo.

Another obscure English album. Between new wave and post-punk, Magazine is yet another group which failed to cross the ocean out of England. Overall, their sound is more palatable than the previous album.

This was fine. A lot of bands have done this type of album, and nothing on this really stood out to me. I don't mind it, but I also didn't find anything that I would be clamoring to return to.

Nothing too notable, a little punkish

Didn’t groove me like I wanted it to, wasn’t bad. 2.5

Okay. 4/10

I'm giving it 3 stars, but it's more like 2.5 for me. There's nothing to hum coming away from this, and there's only so much plinky synth I can handle.

Rough start for my first two reviews! Not a big fan of the vocals

Nope, not for me.

Swing and a miss. The instrumentation was cluttered and the vocals were drawn out and sloppy.

Made no impact on me at all. Possibly the least compelling work of the punk/new wave/post punk movement that I've been exposed to. I forgot to write a review and could scarcely remember having listened by the time I got to it.

I did not like any of these songs.

Qué hueva.

Had to execute a lot of self control to sit through this one, especially since I discovered Katie Herzig the same day and wanted to keep listening through her catalogue. I guess it's technically good, but I can't say I enjoyed listening to it and I couldn't see myself doing so again. I just don't enjoy punk. At all. I think it's the vocals. Favourite track: Shot By Both Sides, by a wide margin. The lyrics were really good and make you think. A shout out to the line "The conspiracy of silence ought/ To revolutionise my thought" (The Light Pours Out Of Me). This is an amazing line. However, the delivery just didn't cut it.

I guess that this would have been influential but really it’s just a bit diluted - a sound that has been taken to much more impressive extremes

Another seemingly important british band from the edges of punk, which just means it is never that good.

Sometimes post-punk is just too post for me.

I can hear how someone would really like this. Just not me. Burst drags on too long while The Great Beautician In The Sky sounds a bit like a Vaudeville show.

When I read one of these guys was in the Buzzcocks I was quite optimistic, but this didn't do it for me. I find it quite hard to judge stuff like this off one listen but I'm not bothering to persevere

Label Virgin? Track named My Tulpa? Yep, this we listen Well... at least I liked some melodies

catchy at times but not for me

meh. this doesn’t mesh the way i feel like it should — there’s either too much or too little dissonance and nothing is individually good enough to hold it up

It was ok - a bit samey, hasn’t really made an impact.

It’s alright

Fine but not inspiring. I didn't have the history/nostalgia to go along with it so that might have made a bit of a difference. I got big Franz Ferdinand vibes from a few of these tracks which was interesting given the amount of time in between when this record was released in the late 70s and when FF came out in mid-2000s.
